  1. Father, you know how often we censor ourselves, that we just don't speak because we are afraid of being laughed at.

  2. We're afraid of being thought not smart. We're afraid, Father, of just being lower in people's opinion.

  3. And Father, you see into our hearts, and you know how powerful that is.

  4. Some of us very powerful, some of us maybe not very powerful, but you see us.

  5. Father, do a work in our lives. Help us, Father, to have a confidence and a security that is based on the gospel,

  6. on what Jesus did for us on the cross. Help us to have an unashamedness about your word.

  7. And this we ask in the name of Jesus. Amen. Please be seated.

  8. So there's an elephant in the room. Ken read very well that famous story of God creating Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.

  9. And the elephant in the room is whether or not the story is true, or at least in what sense the story is true.

  10. A fair number of people are relatively comfortable with the idea that the story is, well, just a story.

  11. It's like a myth. It's like a story that gives us some insight about how things work.

  12. But the really big problem with a story that just gives us insight is that we all know that in life often we have to choose between stories whenever it fits.

  13. I mean, you know, there's two sayings. It's not a story, but you could make a story to illustrate either of them.

  14. You know, we all are familiar with the story, too many cooks, or the saying, too many cooks spoil the broth.

  15. On the other hand, we say, many hands make light work.

  16. You know, so when is it that you have too many people, and when is it that you need more people, right?

  17. And we sort of just choose.

  18. And so, you know, if the Adam and Eve story is just a story, but, you know, we know it's not true.

  19. It's not, like, real.

  20. It's not true like it's true that Sir John A. Macdonald was the first prime minister of Canada.

  21. Then, you know, it's just very comfortable and very easy in our culture when we have different things come our ways

  22. that we can just say, well, okay, for this instance, we'll use this story, and in this instance, we'll do, you know, another story.

  23. And it's also very, very easy, especially in our day and age, to say, you know, this story probably came from people.

  24. I mean, I had one.

  25. I know somebody who thinks it comes from the Stone Age, but it comes from the Bronze Age.

  26. It probably has roots way, way, way earlier than the Bronze Age.

  27. And so it's very easy just to dismiss it.

  28. So there's a bit of an elephant in the room.

  29. Here I am up front on my hind legs, and I'm going to talk about this story.

  30. And I am very, very conscious of what people are taught.

  31. I was taught in high school and what's taught in university.

  32. And so is the story of Adam and Eve true?

  33. Are they real?

  34. I'm going to tell you that they're real.

  35. And by that, I mean they're just as real as I am real or any one of you are real.

  36. That I think that's what the story teaches.

  37. Now, some of you are having a yikes moment.

  38. Some of you are having a hallelujah moment that there's actually somebody willing to stand up in Ottawa in 2017

  39. in the best educated city in the country and say something like that.

  40. And a lot of you are having an oh no, oh my moment when I say that I believe that the story of Adam and Eve is true.

  41. That it's obviously written with some artistic and other symbolic types of aspects being highlighted in the story.

  42. But I believe that Adam and Eve are real and true, just as real and true as you and I are.

  43. So some of you, as I said, are going, yikes.

  44. And so first we need to try to unpack this big claim, which I think is just what the Bible's teaching here.

  45. So a couple of weeks ago, or a month or two ago, I had a conversation in a coffee shop.

  46. And in it, there's a fellow who came to me.

  47. And he's a guy who's talked to me quite a few times.

  48. And he gave me this one piece of paper to read.

  49. And he said, George, you've got to read this.

  50. This will make you lose your faith.

  51. It'll blow your mind.

  52. It'll keep you awake at night.

  53. But it's all for your good.

  54. So it was a copy of a review in the New York Times review of books.

  55. And it was by some scientist type.

  56. The review was also written by a scientist of some scientific book.

  57. And the book claims to have shown or proved how religious belief and religious thought can all be explained by the process of evolution.

  58. That's basically how I'd summarize the whole page.

  59. In fact, when I said this to my friend, he said, yeah, no, you've summarized it exactly right.

  60. This scientist has shown how evolution proves that religious thought and religious beliefs are just a product of the evolutionary process.

  61. And so I gave the paper back to him.

  62. And I said to him, my friend, that I have an easy way of dealing with this question.

  63. But this should keep you awake at night.

  64. And this completely and utterly rocks your worldview and destroys your thinking.

  65. And he looked at me and said, no, it doesn't.

  66. And I said, here's the thing.

  67. You can't have it two ways.

  68. You can't have an evolutionary theory that only accounts for religious thoughts.

  69. If you have an evolutionary theory that forms and creates how we think, it does it for all thinking.

  70. Now, I have a very, very simple and powerful explanation as to why that's completely wrong.

  71. But you, you're an atheist.

  72. You believe in evolution.

  73. This article is telling you that your thoughts, you have no freedom in them.

  74. You haven't really thought them.

  75. They're completely and utterly controlled.

  76. And he looked at me and changed the topic.

  77. Which is, by the way, often what he does when he thinks he's got me.

  78. And I, by God's grace, have some type of a reply.

  79. So, you see, here's the thing.

  80. It's a very, very important thing when we think.

  81. And it's very easy because, you know, in our culture, people like me are in an unbelievable minority.

  82. And there's a huge cultural consensus.

  83. And when there's a huge cultural consensus, it means that often in a huge cultural consensus, people don't have to think about what they're saying.

  84. Because, well, I mean, why do I have to think about what I'm saying?

  85. Is my high school science teachers think this?

  86. The university professors think this?

  87. The CBC thinks it?

  88. The Supreme Court of Canada thinks it?

  89. You know, people who run museums and all they think it.

  90. So, you know, I don't really have to think about what's being said.

  91. But the fact of the matter is, is that ideas always, and scientific knowledge, always has to be dealt with, like, by everybody.

  92. It's not just that these claims have to only be dealt with by Christians.

  93. You see, in effect, what happens is that there's a little bit of a sleight of hand or a distraction where a scientific, this idea that's taught in a high school and university about evolution, that it's just sort of stated.

  94. But there's never any type of discussion as to whether there's, in fact, very, very, very profound problems or very, very troubling and counterintuitive and maybe foolish ideas at the heart of it.

  95. It's just sort of maintained in the culture.

  96. But everything has to be dealt with by...

  97. It's not just that Christians have to deal with something.

  98. Everybody has to deal with particular things that arise in terms of knowledge.

  99. So here's the thing.

  100. I've said this to you before, but if you could put up...

  101. Actually, the first one I didn't put up.

  102. Could you put up the first one, Andrew?

  103. This is the shocking thing that's proved that I am an ignorant hick and don't know anything.

  104. Adam and Eve were real people, and their story told in Genesis is important to believe.

  105. Trust and think upon.

  106. That's sort of my big claim.

  107. I think that's what the Bible's teaching, that Adam and Eve were real people, and their story told in Genesis is important to believe, trust, and think upon.

  108. If you could put up the next thing, Andrew.

  109. So here's the thing.

  110. And, you know, I've said this a couple of times.

  111. In fact, you're probably getting a bit bored of it, but it's a really, really, really, really big thing to get our minds around.

  112. And once we start to get our minds around this, it takes a whole pressure off of us.

  113. It allows us to have very different conversations and to start to read the Bible with greater confidence.

  114. You see, there's a basic choice that is before us.

  115. And the choice is that matter, pure chance, and cause and effect accounts for life and the intricate, fine-tuned universe.

  116. Or God designed and created life and the intricate, fine-tuned universe.

  117. That's the basic choice.

  118. And, in fact, as I've tried to talk about over the last few, you know, the origin of the species was written 159 years ago.

  119. So what we call of is the theory of evolution.

  120. Now they call it neo-Darwinian because there's been some changes to it.

  121. But this is the fundamental insight that we just know so much more about the world and about the universe

  122. and about the chemical basis of life than was known 159 years ago.

  123. And the more you know about the chemical basis of life, the things which have to be there,

  124. it's not as if life can be created and then the earth has to be spinning at the right speed,

  125. on the right axis, at the right distance from the sun, which has to be the right size for the distance.

  126. If that isn't all right, then life can't happen.

  127. If the chemical basis that life has to emerge from, if that doesn't happen, then life can't emerge.

  128. And that intricacy has to happen purely and utterly by chance.

  129. Natural selection can't touch it.

  130. It has to happen purely and utterly by chance.

  131. And it even gets harder.

  132. And this is the thing which touched on my friend.

  133. I almost said his name by accident.

  134. But my friend who gave me this thing to rock his world.

  135. If you could put up the next version of this same choice, Andrew.

  136. Matter, pure chance and cause and effect.

  137. That, and that's what you're, behind whatever you're taught,

  138. they rarely come out and articulate it so clearly in high school and university.

  139. Sometimes they do.

  140. But then they'll articulate that and then they'll just move on

  141. without just pausing for a second about the momentous claim.

  142. But matter, pure chance and cause and effect accounts for the existence of right and wrong.

  143. It has to account for human dignity, human worth, human freedom, meaning in life.

  144. It has to account for the existence of love.

  145. It has to account for how our minds know.

  146. Or, God designing and creating all things accounts for right and wrong,

  147. for human dignity and human freedom and human worth,

  148. for love, for meaning, for beauty, for creativity,

  149. and how our minds know.

  150. Like, you just look at that thing here for a second.

  151. Look at that first choice, which is what you are, in effect, taught

  152. and how it's basically taught.

  153. And see, people are so much better than their thinking.

  154. And people often will talk about evolution and then they'll just sort of,

  155. you know, like there's a place I pass,

  156. and I think it's called evolutionary physiotherapy.

  157. And I think, oh, so it's a physiotherapy that encourages the strong to eat the weak.

  158. No, that's not their intent.

  159. They believe that it somehow makes, like it's progress,

  160. that it's some type of always getting better.

  161. Evolution doesn't mean that.

  162. It just means given a certain set of circumstances,

  163. something survives and something doesn't.

  164. Different circumstances later on might mean the other thing happens.

  165. It doesn't mean they're better.

  166. It just means one happens to survive the circumstances.

  167. It has nothing to do with better.

  168. You add better, that's contradictory to the thought.

  169. But you just look at that first choice,

  170. that matter, pure chance and cause and effect.

  171. If that causes everything and accounts for everything,

  172. how on earth can I actually love?

  173. And how can I trust that my mind actually knows something?

  174. That if everything that's going on in my mind

  175. is just purely a result of cause and effect

  176. and of chemicals and of processes of stimuli that affect the chemicals,

  177. like why should I even think that thinking is true?

  178. Like there has to be something outside of cause and effect

  179. that's both in it but sort of outside of it

  180. that transcends it in some way for me to have freedom.

  181. And if in fact there just is this cause and effect,

  182. you know, there really is fundamentally no difference in worth

  183. than my poop or me.

  184. And that's the big claim that's made.

  185. And it's hidden that there's this fundamental choice.

  186. And as I've said over and over and over again,

  187. nobody really believes the first choice,

  188. not when it comes to things that matter.

  189. I'll tell a different version.

  190. This is the third week I've told a version of this.

  191. Just imagine for a second that there's a young man

  192. and he's decided he wants to ask Alice to marry him.

  193. And he knows that Alice loves to go for a walk in the woods.

  194. Just, you know, a little bit, you know,

  195. short drive from where she lives.

  196. There's this beautiful walk she likes to go on.

  197. And he knows that she loves this walk

  198. and she loves creativity and she loves nature

  199. and she loves crafts.

  200. So he thinks, you know what I'm going to do?

  201. I'm going to need some help,

  202. but I know there's this one spot

  203. and there's this nice sort of a bit of a slope.

  204. And I think what I'm going to do

  205. is I'm going to get up really early one morning.

  206. I'm going to get Buddy to help me.

  207. And we're going to go

  208. and we're going to collect ground wood from the ground.

  209. And we're going to use the wood from the ground

  210. to spell Alice, will you marry me?

  211. And we'll even plant it, make it so that,

  212. you know, there's this beautiful little cluster of flowers

  213. in a couple of places.

  214. And I think we can just place it in such a way

  215. that the little group of flowers

  216. are like the periods on the eye.

  217. Aww.

  218. And so I'm just going to go for,

  219. I'll get it all set up early in the morning.

  220. I'll go get Alice and then I'll say,

  221. you know, we'll arrange before

  222. that we're going to go for a walk

  223. and we'll walk hand in hand along the path

  224. and we'll come around the corner

  225. and she'll see Alice, will you marry me?

  226. But, you know, he knows he needs a buddy to help him

  227. put it together and then stand to make sure that,

  228. you know, I don't know,

  229. a whole bunch of 12-year-olds

  230. don't come and scatter it

  231. or reword it to say something rude, you know?

  232. So he gets the buddy

  233. and the two of them get there

  234. and they sit it all up.

  235. And then he said,

  236. the buddy agrees he's going to stay there

  237. to protect it

  238. while the young man goes to get Alice.

  239. And the young man, you know,

  240. his buddy's standing there

  241. and occasionally a group of women walk by

  242. and several of them say,

  243. my name's Alice,

  244. the answer's yes.

  245. A couple of guys walk by

  246. and one of them says,

  247. my name's Alice,

  248. I say yes.

  249. And, you know,

  250. they all just laugh,

  251. have some fun.

  252. Anyway,

  253. he gets the text from his friend

  254. who's going to ask Alice to marry him

  255. that they're just,

  256. you know,

  257. they're only about a minute away,

  258. so they're two minutes away,

  259. so the friend,

  260. he goes, you know,

  261. off to,

  262. out of sight

  263. and the young man and Alice

  264. and they come walking along

  265. and Alice sees it

  266. and she says to her,

  267. to the young man,

  268. isn't that so weird?

  269. The branches must have fallen off the tree

  270. in that arrangement.

  271. Isn't that cool?

  272. Now, no young woman would say that.

  273. Nobody would say that.

  274. Absolutely nobody believes that.

  275. And let me tell you,

  276. having wood put in the form of,

  277. that says,

  278. Alice, will you marry me?

  279. Just ask,

  280. there's people here

  281. who do biochemistry

  282. and ask them about DNA sequencing

  283. and the chemical basis of life

  284. and what would have to happen

  285. for the chemical basis of DNA

  286. to happen before there's life

  287. is unbelievably more complicated

  288. than having branches fall

  289. and say,

  290. Alice, will you marry me?

  291. Like, of an incommensurable order of magnitude

  292. and that's just one

  293. of an incommensurable magnitude

  294. of things

  295. that this first thing,

  296. this first choice

  297. says has to happen

  298. purely as a result of chance

  299. and the way that after chance happens,

  300. cause and effect happens.

  301. Like, nobody believes it.

  302. Sorry.

  303. We just don't,

  304. nobody believes that Alice,

  305. will you marry me?

  306. would happen by chance.

  307. Nobody.

  308. So,

  309. you know,

  310. when I say

  311. that Adam and Eve

  312. were real people

  313. and their story

  314. in Genesis

  315. is important to know,

  316. believe,

  317. trust,

  318. and think upon,

  319. gosh,

  320. I know that there's problems.

  321. Some of you are going,

  322. yikes, George,

  323. you know how old

  324. the Atlantic Ocean is?

  325. You know what about fossils?

  326. You know about all the,

  327. you know,

  328. you know about all the fossil record

  329. and,

  330. I mean,

  331. George,

  332. gosh,

  333. good grief.

  334. Do you know how many problems

  335. are with your idea?

  336. You know,

  337. over the last couple of weeks

  338. I've tried to hammer

  339. one simple idea

  340. that what's happened

  341. is that Christians

  342. have gotten mistaken

  343. and dealing with

  344. all of these questions

  345. they've tried to go

  346. first and foremost

  347. to Genesis 1 and 2

  348. and what they really

  349. should have done,

  350. what we really should have done

  351. is gone to John chapter 1

    John 1:1–4

  352. verses 1 to 4

  353. and Hebrews 1

  354. and Colossians

  355. and other texts

  356. in the New Testament

  357. that teach that God

  358. creates all things

  359. out of nothing

  360. and meditate upon

  361. the doctrine of creation.

  362. That's where we should have gone.

  363. In the beginning

  364. was the Word

  365. and the Word was with God

  366. and the Word was God.

  367. He was with God

  368. in the beginning.

  369. All things were made

  370. through him

  371. and without him

  372. nothing was made

  373. that was made

  374. in him was life

  375. and the life

  376. was the light of men.

  377. That's John

  378. verses chapter 1

  379. verses 1 to 4

  380. and as I've

  381. tried to say

  382. that

  383. and I've,

  384. you know,

  385. here's the thing

  386. it's so funny

  387. I was watching

  388. the newest Star Trek movie

  389. last night

  390. which just frankly

  391. was too much

  392. of a yawn for me

  393. but,

  394. you know,

  395. I sat all the way

  396. through it

  397. but,

  398. you know,

  399. in the three different,

  400. I've shared before,

  401. the three different

  402. Star Trek series

  403. which have Q in it,

  404. that's the moment

  405. that I understood

  406. at an imaginative level.

  407. It's very ironic

  408. that a series

  409. which is committed

  410. to a basic agnosticism

  411. and a basic belief

  412. in human goodness

  413. would actually give

  414. an image

  415. of the doctrine

  416. of creation

  417. that helps us

  418. to start to realize

  419. what's at stake

  420. in the doctrine

  421. of creation

  422. because in this

  423. character of Q

  424. and he could make

  425. something like

  426. a forest

  427. as if they're,

  428. you know,

  429. Robin Hood

  430. or just out of nothing

  431. and the viewer knows

  432. that he's just made it

  433. like that

  434. out of nothing

  435. in an instant

  436. and yet when we look

  437. at it

  438. we know that the trees

  439. aren't just an instant old.

  440. We know that when

  441. data tries to figure out

  442. he would go

  443. they could cut the trees.

  444. They know that it was

  445. just created like that

  446. that instant.

  447. They know that the bridge

  448. of the Star Trek Enterprise

  449. was created just like that

  450. but they can look at it

  451. and they can know

  452. that this is metal

  453. that had to have been made

  454. so many years ago

  455. and it had to be made

  456. come from this type of planet

  457. and it had to have been formed

  458. over eons

  459. and eons

  460. of geological processes

  461. and yet you look at it

  462. imaginatively

  463. and everyone who watches it

  464. imaginatively

  465. they understand

  466. that it was just created

  467. by Q

  468. that instant.

  469. That that's what

  470. the doctrine of creation

  471. implies.

  472. And as I,

  473. if you could put up

  474. these points

  475. I'll say them very quick

  476. that the God

  477. did not make a stage set

  478. he made creation

  479. with real heights

  480. and depths

  481. and a vast backstory

  482. as I've said every week

  483. if you went back in time

  484. an instant after God

  485. creates everything

  486. and you're standing there

  487. with Adam and Eve

  488. and you cut down a tree

  489. the tree has rings.

  490. You look at the tree

  491. you'd say

  492. that's a hundred year old tree.

  493. If you go to that part

  494. near Jerusalem

  495. you know

  496. and you know that fig trees

  497. can be thousands of years old

  498. you might say

  499. that's a two thousand year old fig tree.

  500. You might say

  501. that's a young river

  502. that's an old river.

  503. You might fly

  504. and you go to Atlantic Ocean

  505. and you look

  506. and you see how old

  507. the Atlantic Ocean is

  508. and you look in the stars

  509. and you see things

  510. that had been black holes

  511. and supernovas

  512. and things which are

  513. hundreds of light years away

  514. and it all was just

  515. created like that

  516. just an instant before.

  517. That's what the doctrine

  518. of creation out of nothing means.

  519. And we've lost

  520. thinking about that

  521. and realizing that

  522. that carries the heavy lifting

  523. and then Genesis 1 and 2

  524. they're true

  525. but they're also communicating

  526. other types of things

  527. that God wants us to know.

  528. In the beginning was the Word

  529. and the Word was with God

  530. and the Word was God.

  531. He was with God

  532. in the beginning.

  533. All things were made

  534. through Him

  535. and without Him

  536. nothing was made

  537. that was made.

  538. In Him was life

  539. and the life

  540. was the light of men.

  541. To put up the next point

  542. the biblical doctrine

  543. of creation means

  544. that we cannot know

  545. scientifically

  546. when God created.

  547. We can only begin

  548. to map creation's

  549. heights and depths

  550. and widths

  551. and explore

  552. its backstory.

  553. Next thing.

  554. And so that means

  555. that the choice

  556. is not between

  557. science and faith

  558. the choice is between

  559. two faiths

  560. two beliefs.

  561. That's the choice.

  562. And the choice

  563. is between

  564. two beliefs

  565. two faiths.

  566. And why do you say

  567. well George

  568. is it just two?

  569. And I don't mean

  570. to insult you

  571. if you're here

  572. but listen

  573. nobody has ever heard

  574. if you tell me later on

  575. if I've missed this

  576. nobody goes to say

  577. we're going to contrast

  578. the Mohawk creation myths

  579. with evolution

  580. to prove that the Mohawk

  581. creation myths

  582. are true.

  583. Or the Iroquois creation myths

  584. or the Navajo creation myths

  585. or the creation myths

  586. from Greek mythology.

  587. Nobody says

  588. there's a choice

  589. there's actually

  590. a third way George

  591. you have the Mohawk

  592. creation myths

  593. you have the Bible

  594. you have science

  595. nobody does that.

  596. Nobody has conferences

  597. about the Hindu creation myths

  598. but fundamentally

  599. there's two choices.

  600. And by the way

  601. there could be people

  602. who don't accept the Bible

  603. who just would accept

  604. the idea

  605. that there must be

  606. some type of God

  607. to have created things

  608. but you know

  609. this is just so

  610. and there's a whole other

  611. type of thing

  612. but if you begin

  613. to go that

  614. and you begin

  615. to look at the

  616. wisdom of the New Testament

  617. the way it's articulated

  618. it's connection to Jesus

  619. and the resurrection

  620. and the narrative

  621. and the fall

  622. and it's just

  623. there's no other

  624. effective

  625. effective option

  626. than between

  627. what we're taught

  628. in high school

  629. and university

  630. and by the media

  631. and what the Bible teaches

  632. there's only a choice

  633. of two.

  634. There really is.

  635. So

  636. you know

  637. believe it or not

  638. I actually shared

  639. this week

  640. with somebody

  641. somebody in a Starbucks

  642. asked me what I was

  643. going to be talking

  644. about this week

  645. and I said

  646. I was going to talk

  647. about Adam and Eve

  648. and

  649. and

  650. there was a bit

  651. of a pause

  652. and

  653. you know

  654. she said to me

  655. you know

  656. it's really hard

  657. for me to know

  658. what to believe.

  659. It was a bit

  660. of an interesting

  661. take on it.

  662. I was expecting

  663. I was sort of

  664. bracing myself

  665. I wasn't bracing myself

  666. I'd been thinking

  667. about this affair

  668. but I was prepared

  669. to have a conversation

  670. about it

  671. and

  672. and she said to me

  673. you know George

  674. I really don't know

  675. what to believe

  676. and I said to her

  677. you know

  678. here's

  679. here's how thinking

  680. really works.

  681. The fact of the matter is

  682. I mean

  683. I said

  684. I told her

  685. David Hume

  686. this is true

  687. he's a famous philosopher

  688. David Hume

  689. famously pointed out

  690. that we can have

  691. rational doubts

  692. as to whether

  693. the sun will rise

  694. tomorrow.

  695. you can have

  696. rational doubts

  697. and I said to her

  698. you know

  699. we've had a few

  700. conversations

  701. about the Christian faith

  702. and you always

  703. have doubts

  704. and problems

  705. so if you're

  706. searching for something

  707. that will never

  708. have any doubts

  709. and never have

  710. any problems

  711. you're searching

  712. for something

  713. that will never exist

  714. because

  715. you're like

  716. David Hume

  717. and you will

  718. even doubt

  719. if pushed

  720. whether the sun

  721. will rise

  722. tomorrow.

  723. I said

  724. what you need

  725. to look at

  726. isn't something

  727. that has

  728. no problems

  729. with it

  730. no objections

  731. to it

  732. you need to look

  733. at what the

  734. different problems

  735. and objections

  736. are

  737. and which viewpoint

  738. has the most wisdom

  739. and the most

  740. coherence

  741. and the most truth

  742. and the fewest

  743. problems

  744. problems

  745. and you know

  746. she was thoughtful

  747. about that

  748. and then somebody

  749. came

  750. because she was

  751. a barista

  752. and then

  753. we didn't continue

  754. the conversation

  755. at that particular

  756. time

  757. but that's how

  758. real thinking

  759. really goes

  760. especially for us

  761. as fallen creatures

  762. we really

  763. can

  764. if necessary

  765. pull some

  766. final bit of

  767. doubt

  768. and skepticism

  769. out of our pocket

  770. and so we really

  771. do just need

  772. to sort of

  773. realize

  774. that that's

  775. what the

  776. choice is

  777. not problem

  778. free thinking

  779. but the fewest

  780. problems

  781. the thing

  782. which has

  783. the most truth

  784. and so you know

  785. are there problems

  786. with Adam and Eve

  787. being real people

  788. yeah I understand

  789. that there's problems

  790. if you could put

  791. that point up there

  792. please Andrew again

  793. I understand

  794. that there's problems

  795. Adam and Eve

  796. were real people

  797. and their story

  798. told in Genesis

  799. is important to trust

  800. and to believe

  801. and trust

  802. and think upon

  803. and know

  804. I know that

  805. there's some problems

  806. with that

  807. I can't answer

  808. all of the different

  809. aspects of it

  810. what I can tell you

  811. is this

  812. is that at a very

  813. simple literary level

  814. if you read through

  815. the book of Genesis

  816. it seems as if

  817. Adam and Eve

  818. are described

  819. in the same way

  820. that they describe

  821. Abraham and Isaac

  822. and Jacob

  823. and Joseph

  824. and if you look at

  825. other times

  826. in the Bible

  827. where they obviously

  828. have more mythological

  829. or visionary

  830. or archetype

  831. there's in fact

  832. a story in Ezekiel

  833. that sort of recounts

  834. the Garden of Eden

  835. in very figurative

  836. visionary type

  837. of language

  838. and if you just

  839. read that in Ezekiel

  840. and you read this

  841. the literary structure

  842. is vastly different

  843. like it's just so

  844. obviously different

  845. when you start to read it

  846. or you compare

  847. how some things

  848. are written

  849. in the book of Revelation

  850. to Genesis

  851. it's just so radically

  852. different

  853. and then if you look

  854. at the New Testament

  855. and other parts

  856. of the Old Testament

  857. it seems obvious

  858. that Jesus seems

  859. to believe

  860. that Adam and Eve

  861. were real people

  862. as does the different

  863. New Testament writers

  864. and I'm not saying

  865. that it's obviously

  866. the book of Genesis 2

  867. isn't written

  868. in a literalistic

  869. scientific way

  870. but that's fine

  871. who says things

  872. in the Bible

  873. always have to be

  874. written that way

  875. there's no rule

  876. for God

  877. that he has to write

  878. things those ways

  879. it's obviously

  880. a stylized type

  881. of story

  882. it's more artistic

  883. and more literary

  884. and it's very

  885. carefully crafted

  886. so that some

  887. of the details

  888. are something

  889. that artists

  890. can ponder

  891. and that poets

  892. can ponder

  893. and that musicians

  894. can create around

  895. and visual artists

  896. can paint

  897. and that we can

  898. just think upon

  899. the deeper meaning

  900. of the aspects

  901. it obviously has

  902. that artistic quality

  903. about it

  904. but at the end

  905. of the day

  906. I believe

  907. that if I have

  908. to choose

  909. between the two

  910. stories

  911. and I have

  912. no other

  913. fundamental choice

  914. than between

  915. matter,

  916. pure chance

  917. and creating

  918. everything

  919. or God creating

  920. everything

  921. and that this

  922. is just

  923. I believe

  924. Adam and Eve

  925. were real

  926. and I've spent

  927. a lot of time

  928. on this point

  929. I haven't even

  930. read the Bible

  931. yet

  932. we're going to

  933. read the Bible

  934. in a moment

  935. and I spent

  936. a lot of time

  937. on it

  938. because I know

  939. at the very

  940. beginning

  941. of this service

  942. that if I was

  943. to have said

  944. to you

  945. how comfortable

  946. would you be

  947. to lead a

  948. discussion

  949. on Genesis 2

  950. in your office

  951. tomorrow

  952. like just

  953. about every

  954. one of us

  955. would have

  956. squirmed

  957. because the

  958. fact of the

  959. matter is

  960. is that we're

  961. afraid of

  962. reading the

  963. text

  964. many of us

  965. not all of us

  966. but many of us

  967. are just deeply

  968. afraid of

  969. reading the

  970. text

  971. and as I've

  972. shared before

  973. like if we

  974. don't understand

  975. Genesis 1

  976. and 2

  977. and 3

  978. like just

  979. about everything

  980. in the Bible

  981. doesn't make

  982. sense

  983. like you see

  984. that's even

  985. what you see

  986. in John

    John 1:1–4

  987. chapter 1

  988. verses 1

  989. to 4

  990. which goes

  991. on to tell

  992. us these

  993. wonderful

  994. things about

  995. and the

  996. word became

  997. flesh and

  998. dwelt among

  999. us

  1000. and we

  1001. have seen

  1002. his glory

  1003. the glory

  1004. of the

  1005. only begotten

  1006. of the

  1007. father

  1008. that is

  1009. all part

  1010. of one

  1011. thing

  1012. which

  1013. begins

  1014. with

  1015. in the

  1016. beginning

  1017. was the

  1018. word

  1019. and the

  1020. word

  1021. was with

  1022. God

  1023. and the

  1024. word

  1025. was

  1026. God

  1027. he

  1028. was

  1029. with

  1030. God

  1031. in the

  1032. beginning

  1033. all things

  1034. were made

  1035. through him

  1036. and without

  1037. him

  1038. nothing was

  1039. made

  1040. that was

  1041. made

  1042. in him

  1043. was life

  1044. and the

  1045. life

  1046. was the

  1047. light

  1048. of men

  1049. and the

  1050. word

  1051. became

  1052. flesh

  1053. and dwelt

  1054. among

  1055. us

  1056. and we

  1057. have

  1058. seen

  1059. his

  1060. glory

  1061. glory

  1062. as of

  1063. the

  1064. only

  1065. begotten

  1066. of the

  1067. father

  1068. full of

  1069. grace

  1070. and

  1071. truth

  1072. I want

  1073. to try

  1074. to give

  1075. you some

  1076. confidence

  1077. to not

  1078. be afraid

  1079. of the

  1080. Bible

  1081. and to

  1082. read it

  1083. to think

  1084. upon it

  1085. and to

  1086. know

  1087. upon it

  1088. we're

  1089. going to

  1090. do

  1091. now

  1092. if you

  1093. open

  1094. your

  1095. Bibles

  1096. we're

  1097. going

  1098. to do

  1099. a

  1100. simple

  1101. reading

  1102. through

  1103. the

  1104. Bible

  1105. or two

  1106. and they'll

  1107. have to

  1108. be very

  1109. brief

  1110. just so

  1111. you know

  1112. next week

  1113. we're going

  1114. to flip

  1115. back

  1116. over the

  1117. next few

  1118. weeks

  1119. we're going

  1120. to talk

  1121. about the

  1122. transgender

  1123. issues

  1124. we're going

  1125. to talk

  1126. about same

  1127. sex attraction

  1128. issues

  1129. we're going

  1130. to talk

  1131. about marriage

  1132. we're going

  1133. to talk

  1134. about sex

  1135. we're going

  1136. to talk

  1137. about the

  1138. origin

  1139. of religion

  1140. nothing

  1141. controversial

  1142. over the

  1143. next two

  1144. or three

  1145. weeks

  1146. and it's

  1147. because we're

  1148. going to

  1149. zero back

  1150. and look

  1151. at parts

  1152. of Genesis

  1153. 1 and

  1154. parts of

  1155. Genesis

  1156. 2 that I

  1157. won't touch

  1158. on this

  1159. this week

  1160. because I

  1161. want to

  1162. get you

  1163. this big

  1164. picture

  1165. of just

  1166. having a

  1167. confidence

  1168. and then

  1169. let's

  1170. read the

  1171. story

  1172. so if

  1173. you have

  1174. your

  1175. Bibles

  1176. Genesis

    Genesis 2:4

  1177. chapter 2

  1178. verses 4

  1179. and following

  1180. these are

  1181. the generations

  1182. of the heavens

  1183. and the earth

  1184. when they were

  1185. created

  1186. in the day

  1187. that the

  1188. Lord God

  1189. made the

  1190. earth

  1191. and the

  1192. heavens

  1193. just notice

  1194. here that

  1195. the word

  1196. created

  1197. is used

  1198. again

  1199. the main

  1200. thing I

  1201. want to

  1202. just point

  1203. out to

  1204. you

  1205. is that

  1206. the book

  1207. of

  1208. Genesis

  1209. has a

  1210. it's a

  1211. very

  1212. very well

  1213. crafted

  1214. and in

  1215. the book

  1216. there are

  1217. ten

  1218. sort of

  1219. sub-books

  1220. and each

  1221. of these

  1222. sub-books

  1223. begin

  1224. with

  1225. these are

  1226. the

  1227. generations

  1228. and it's a

  1229. literary device

  1230. that marks

  1231. different units

  1232. of the book

  1233. so actually

  1234. this

  1235. these are the

  1236. generations

  1237. is marking

  1238. a section

  1239. that goes

  1240. from here

  1241. till the end

  1242. of chapter 4

  1243. is one

  1244. literary unit

  1245. and then you'll

  1246. see these are

  1247. the generations

  1248. and it's

  1249. another

  1250. literary unit

  1251. that's

  1252. it's

  1253. how the

  1254. book

  1255. is crafted

  1256. verse 5

  1257. when

  1258. excuse me

  1259. when no bush

  1260. of the field

1261. was yet in the land

  1262. and no small

  1263. plant of the field

  1264. had yet sprung up

  1265. for the Lord God

  1266. had not caused it

1267. to rain on the land

1268. and there was no man

  1269. to work the ground

  1270. and a mist

  1271. was going up

  1272. from the land

  1273. and was watering

  1274. the whole face

  1275. of the ground

  1276. here's the

  1277. the big verse

  1278. to jump out

  1279. at you

  1280. then the Lord God

  1281. formed the man

  1282. of dust

  1283. from the ground

  1284. and breathed

  1285. into his nostrils

  1286. the breath of life

  1287. and the man

  1288. became a living creature

  1289. Andrew if you could

  1290. put up the point

  1291. here's the big point

  1292. of Genesis 2

  1293. there's more than this

  1294. but for today

  1295. because what we're

  1296. really doing is

  1297. last week

  1298. and this week

  1299. I want to try

  1300. to bring out

  1301. what Genesis 1

  1302. and 2

  1303. tells us about God

  1304. and then the next

  1305. two weeks

  1306. we're going to go

  1307. back and look

  1308. at Genesis 1

  1309. and Genesis 2

  1310. about what it

  1311. tells us

  1312. about being human

  1313. and what it's

  1314. saying is this

  1315. man and woman

  1316. image bearers

  1317. of your creator

  1318. know him

  1319. the one

  1320. imminent

  1321. personal

  1322. and covenant

  1323. making God

  1324. man and woman

  1325. image bearers

  1326. it's just talking

  1327. about the man

  1328. right now

  1329. but it's very obvious

  1330. as we read

  1331. through the story

  1332. that it's

  1333. when Eve

  1334. is made

  1335. out of Adam

  1336. that the

  1337. implication is

  1338. that this

  1339. early

  1340. forming

  1341. and early

  1342. sort of

  1343. the big picture

  1344. of this story

  1345. equally applies

  1346. to men and

  1347. women

  1348. men and

  1349. man and

  1350. woman

  1351. image bearers

  1352. of your creator

  1353. know him

  1354. the one

  1355. imminent

  1356. personal

  1357. and covenant

  1358. making God

  1359. now here's the thing

1360. when I say the word

  1361. imminent

  1362. creator

  1363. one

  1364. imminent

  1365. personal

  1366. covenant

  1367. making

  1368. okay I don't know

  1369. what the percentage

  1370. is but there's a

  1371. significant number

  1372. of us

1373. as soon as I say

  1374. that phrase

  1375. what's on Netflix

  1376. tonight

  1377. where am I going

  1378. to go to have

  1379. lunch after the

  1380. service

  1381. that's how our

  1382. minds work

  1383. we hate abstract

  1384. ideas

  1385. true confession

  1386. I love

  1387. phrases like

  1388. this

  1389. I can spend

  1390. weeks on

  1391. phrases like

  1392. this

  1393. I love

  1394. abstract

  1395. thought

  1396. but a lot

  1397. of people

  1398. those abstract

  1399. terms

  1400. imminent

  1401. one

  1402. creator

  1403. blah blah

  1404. blah

  1405. yada yada

  1406. blah blah

  1407. blah

  1408. that's just

  1409. we're just

  1410. wired differently

  1411. right

  1412. but what

  1413. for those

  1414. of us

  1415. who don't

  1416. like those

  1417. abstract

  1418. ideas

  1419. this story

  1420. as it

  1421. grips us

  1422. communicates

  1423. all of those

  1424. truths to

  1425. us

  1426. in the

  1427. form of

  1428. a story

  1429. and so

  1430. you just

  1431. look at

  1432. verse 7

  1433. again

  1434. this is a

  1435. very very

  1436. very powerful

  1437. text

  1438. and even if

  1439. we don't

  1440. get to read

  1441. most of the

  1442. rest of it

  1443. just because

  1444. of time

  1445. it's a

  1446. very powerful

  1447. text

  1448. look again

  1449. at how it

  1450. goes

  1451. verse 7

  1452. then the

  1453. Lord God

  1454. in the

  1455. original language

  1456. of Hebrew

  1457. this is a

  1458. very very

  1459. unique phrase

  1460. that mainly

  1461. occurs in

  1462. chapter 2

  1463. and virtually

  1464. nowhere else

  1465. and what it

  1466. is

  1467. it's actually

  1468. and Jewish

  1469. people have

  1470. forgotten how

  1471. to say this

  1472. word because

  1473. it was so

  1474. holy that

  1475. they didn't

  1476. want to

  1477. say it

  1478. it's the

  1479. same word

  1480. as is revealed

  1481. to Moses

  1482. in the

  1483. burning bush

  1484. it's the

  1485. word I

  1486. am or I

  1487. am that I

  1488. am or I

  1489. will be

  1490. that I

  1491. will be

  1492. in fact

  1493. it's a

  1494. name which

  1495. is also

  1496. a sentence

  1497. it's a

  1498. name that's

  1499. a verb

  1500. and it's

  1501. the word

  1502. it's the

  1503. way that

  1504. God

  1505. communicates

  1506. to his

  1507. people

  1508. that he

  1509. is to

  1510. have a

  1511. personal

  1512. relationship

  1513. with them

  1514. he is in

  1515. a sense

  1516. like when

  1517. we use

  1518. the phrase

  1519. our heavenly

  1520. father

  1521. which is

  1522. really

  1523. what

  1524. when Abba

  1525. I would

  1526. refer to

  1527. my dad

  1528. as dad

  1529. some of

  1530. you might

  1531. refer to

  1532. your dad

  1533. as daddy

  1534. or papa

  1535. or whatever

  1536. it might

  1537. be

  1538. pops

  1539. but it's

  1540. that intimate

  1541. personal

  1542. relational

  1543. word for

  1544. God

  1545. and the

  1546. word God

  1547. here

  1548. is Elohim

  1549. it's

  1550. plural

  1551. but because

  1552. the other

  1553. the verbs

  1554. are singular

  1555. it has to be

  1556. translated as

  1557. a singular

  1558. and it's the

  1559. abstract word

  1560. for God

  1561. it's the

  1562. generic word

  1563. for God

  1564. it is the

  1565. word for God

  1566. that when you

  1567. want to make

  1568. the distinction

  1569. between what

  1570. the Babylonians

  1571. say and the

  1572. Greeks say and

  1573. the Assyrians

  1574. say and the

  1575. Jewish people say

  1576. and you want to

  1577. have that one

  1578. category

  1579. it's the word

  1580. God

  1581. it's the most

  1582. abstract

  1583. distant word

  1584. and so it's

  1585. very interesting

  1586. that in only

  1587. here that the

  1588. two words

  1589. are put together

  1590. to make one

  1591. name for God

  1592. it actually

  1593. shows at a

  1594. literary level

  1595. how the two

  1596. stories are

  1597. supposed to be

  1598. understood together

  1599. because the

  1600. first story

  1601. uses the abstract

  1602. word

  1603. the second story

  1604. is saying that

  1605. that intimate

  1606. personal

  1607. relationship

  1608. walk with

  1609. you God

  1610. spend your

  1611. day with

  1612. you God

  1613. is the

  1614. same God

  1615. who is the

  1616. abstract God

  1617. who is

  1618. transcendent

  1619. and has

  1620. created all

  1621. things

  1622. trying to

  1623. communicate

  1624. imminence

  1625. and intimacy

  1626. and you look

  1627. at the verse

  1628. again

  1629. verse 7

  1630. then the

  1631. Lord God

  1632. formed the

  1633. man of

  1634. dust from

  1635. the ground

  1636. and breathed

  1637. into his

  1638. nostrils

  1639. the breath

  1640. of life

  1641. and the

  1642. man became

  1643. a living

  1644. creature

  1645. the word

  1646. formed

  1647. is from

  1648. the pottery

  1649. studio

  1650. and it's

  1651. an image

  1652. the book

  1653. of Romans

  1654. has a very

  1655. powerful thing

  1656. that comes

  1657. right from

  1658. this word

  1659. in Genesis

  1660. 2

  1661. of how

  1662. we're formed

  1663. like a potter

  1664. forming clay

  1665. and it's

  1666. this image

  1667. as if God

  1668. is pushing

  1669. the wheel

  1670. with his

  1671. foot

  1672. while he's

  1673. taking the

  1674. clay

  1675. and maneuvering

  1676. it with his

  1677. hands

  1678. that God

  1679. touches

  1680. Adam

  1681. with creativity

  1682. and with love

  1683. and affection

  1684. as he forms

  1685. him

  1686. I mean

  1687. now you see

  1688. here's where

  1689. to lose this

  1690. story is to

  1691. lose so much

  1692. like just

  1693. think about

  1694. that for a

  1695. second

  1696. how important

  1697. is human

  1698. touch to

  1699. us

  1700. how important

  1701. is it for

  1702. so many

  1703. people that

  1704. they wish

  1705. that God

  1706. would touch

  1707. them

  1708. can't we

  1709. see that in

  1710. some ways

  1711. long before

  1712. the fall

  1713. in our

  1714. memories

  1715. of this

  1716. very very

  1717. fundamental

  1718. way that

  1719. not only

  1720. our ancestors

  1721. but therefore

  1722. all of us

  1723. were formed

  1724. involved this

  1725. intimate

  1726. wet

  1727. creative

  1728. loving

  1729. intelligent

  1730. touching

  1731. of us

  1732. to form

  1733. us

  1734. that's

  1735. imminence

  1736. isn't it

  1737. and then look

  1738. at the other

  1739. word which is

  1740. used here

  1741. because

  1742. in

  1743. in

  1744. in

  1745. in

  1746. Genesis

  1747. 1

  1748. the two

  1749. the word

  1750. that describes

  1751. human beings

  1752. as a noun

  1753. in the

  1754. in the

  1755. in Genesis

  1756. 2

  1757. it's verbs

  1758. it's very

  1759. very

  1760. it's very

  1761. carefully

  1762. written

  1763. and look

  1764. again at

  1765. verse 7

  1766. then the

  1767. Lord God

  1768. formed the

  1769. man of

  1770. dust

  1771. from the

  1772. ground

  1773. and breathed

  1774. into his

  1775. nostrils

  1776. the breath

  1777. of life

  1778. and the

  1779. man became

  1780. a living

  1781. creature

  1782. just notice

  1783. this

  1784. how intimate

  1785. is that

  1786. like for

  1787. somebody to

  1788. blow into

  1789. my nostrils

  1790. it's

  1791. it's to

  1792. get

  1793. way more

  1794. close and

  1795. personal than

  1796. anybody other

  1797. than my wife

  1798. should be

  1799. okay

  1800. unless I'm

  1801. dying

  1802. and you

  1803. need to

  1804. give me

  1805. you know

  1806. get me

  1807. living again

  1808. you know

  1809. it's

  1810. it's very

  1811. very close

  1812. it's very

  1813. intimate

  1814. and it's

  1815. this picture

  1816. of God

  1817. being right

  1818. face to

  1819. face

  1820. and not

  1821. face to

  1822. face in

  1823. the sense

  1824. that we

  1825. say in

  1826. my face

  1827. in an

  1828. aggressive

  1829. way but

  1830. face to

  1831. face to

  1832. create me

  1833. and to

  1834. give me

  1835. life

  1836. and it's

  1837. breath

  1838. it's

  1839. personal

  1840. it's

  1841. moist

  1842. it's

  1843. coming

  1844. into us

  1845. it's

  1846. this idea

  1847. that God

  1848. is closer

  1849. to me

  1850. he in a

  1851. sense

  1852. is my

  1853. breath

  1854. he's

  1855. closer to

  1856. me

  1857. than my

  1858. breath

  1859. his

  1860. first

  1861. breath

  1862. is why

  1863. I

  1864. have

  1865. breath

  1866. it's

  1867. this

  1868. profound

  1869. close

  1870. face

  1871. to

  1872. face

  1873. sense

  1874. and

  1875. isn't

  1876. that

  1877. at the

  1878. end

  1879. of the

  1880. day

  1881. all

  1882. human

  1883. longing

  1884. to

  1885. see

  1886. the

  1887. face

  1888. of

  1889. God

  1890. don't

  1891. we

  1892. wonder

  1893. why

  1894. is

  1895. God

  1896. so

  1897. distant

  1898. and

  1899. don't

  1900. we

  1901. wonder

  1902. if

  1903. God

  1904. is

  1905. so

  1906. distant

  1907. doesn't

  1908. that

  1909. imply

  1910. that

  1911. there's

  1912. some

  1913. basic

  1914. sense

  1915. within

  1916. us

  1917. that

  1918. the

  1919. way

  1920. it

  1921. should

  1922. be

  1923. is

  1924. as

  1925. close

  1926. to

  1927. us

  1928. as

  1929. our

  1930. breath

  1931. face

  1932. to

  1933. face

  1934. with

  1935. affection

  1936. and

  1937. creativity

  1938. and

  1939. intelligence

  1940. and love

  1941. and

  1942. patience

  1943. you

  1944. see

  1945. if

  1946. we're

  1947. afraid

  1948. to

  1949. read

  1950. these

  1951. chapters

  1952. of

  1953. Genesis

  1954. because

  1955. it'll

  1956. make

  1957. us

  1958. look

  1959. like

  1960. Hicks

  1961. we

  1962. cut

  1963. ourselves

  1964. off

  1965. from

  1966. so

  1967. much

  1968. imaginative

  1969. and

  1970. so

  1971. much

  1972. that

  1973. helps

  1974. to

  1975. correct

  1976. basic

  1977. misunderstandings

  1978. we have

  1979. about

  1980. who

  1981. God

  1982. is

  1983. the

  1984. God

  1985. who

  1986. does

  1987. exist

  1988. who's

  1989. made

  1990. us

  1991. in

  1992. his

  1993. image

  1994. and

  1995. who's

  1996. made

  1997. us

  1998. male

  1999. and

  2000. female

  2001. he

  2002. is

  2003. the

  2004. one

  2005. God

  2006. the

  2007. creator

  2008. God

  2009. he

  2010. is

  2011. an

  2012. imminent

  2013. God

  2014. he

  2015. is

  2016. a

  2017. personal

  2018. God

  2019. he

  2020. is

  2021. a

  2022. God

  2023. who

  2024. wants

  2025. to

  2026. be

  2027. in

  2028. covenant

  2029. with

  2030. us

  2031. which

  2032. is

  2033. relationship

  2034. with

  2035. us

  2036. and

  2037. then

  2038. you

  2039. could

  2040. just

  2041. look

  2042. at

  2043. this

  2044. text

  2045. and

  2046. all

  2047. of

  2048. the

  2049. problem

  2050. like

  2051. you

  2052. could

  2053. almost

  2054. summarize

  2055. it

  2056. so

  2057. much

  2058. of

  2059. the

  2060. mistakes

  2061. in

  2062. spirituality

  2063. and

  2064. religion

  2065. and

  2066. intellectual

  2067. thing

  2068. are we

  2069. beasts

  2070. or are we

  2071. like

  2072. God

  2073. are we

  2074. merely

  2075. of the

  2076. dirt

  2077. and

  2078. of

  2079. nothing

  2080. like

  2081. that

  2082. or

  2083. is

  2084. there

  2085. something

  2086. divine

  2087. about

  2088. us

  2089. is

  2090. there

  2091. something

  2092. in

  2093. some

  2094. way

  2095. that

  2096. we

  2097. are

  2098. like

  2099. every

  2100. other

  2101. living

  2102. creature

  2103. that

  2104. we

  2105. are

  2106. just

  2107. made

  2108. of

  2109. chemicals

  2110. and

  2111. dust

  2112. but

  2113. there

  2114. is

  2115. something

  2116. from

  2117. God

  2118. which

  2119. is

  2120. also

  2121. connected

  2122. to

  2123. us

  2124. which

  2125. can

  2126. explain

  2127. why

  2128. we're

  2129. not

  2130. just

  2131. cause

  2132. and

  2133. effect

  2134. why

  2135. there's

  2136. something

  2137. separate

  2138. from

  2139. cause

  2140. and

  2141. effect

  2142. whereby

  2143. we

  2144. can

  2145. choose

  2146. that

  2147. there's

  2148. some

  2149. type

  2150. of

  2151. dignity

  2152. to

  2153. us

  2154. and

  2155. that

  2156. dignity

  2157. comes

  2158. to

  2159. as

  2160. fast

  2161. and

  2162. athletic

  2163. and

  2164. powerful

  2165. as

  2166. Usain

  2167. Bold

  2168. that

  2169. there's

  2170. some

  2171. fundamental

  2172. sameness

  2173. this

  2174. text

  2175. is

  2176. the

  2177. most

  2178. profound

  2179. rejection

  2180. of

  2181. all

  2182. racism

  2183. as

  2184. you

  2185. go

  2186. on

  2187. to

  2188. look

  2189. at

  2190. the

  2191. story

  2192. of

  2193. Adam

  2194. and

  2195. Eve

  2196. and

  2197. that

  2198. Eve

  2199. comes

  2200. out

  2201. of

  2202. Adam

  2203. that

  2204. there's

  2205. not

  2206. as

  2207. if

  2208. there's

  2209. men

  2210. and

  2211. they

  2212. were

  2213. created

  2214. in

  2215. one

  2216. part

  2217. of

  2218. the

  2219. universe

  2220. and

  2221. then

  2222. there's

  2223. women

  2224. and

  2225. they're

  2226. created

  2227. another

  2228. part

  2229. of

  2230. the

  2231. that

  2232. rich

  2233. people

  2234. are

  2235. better

  2236. than

  2237. poor

  2238. people

  2239. that

  2240. healthy

  2241. people

  2242. are

  2243. better

  2244. than

  2245. sick

  2246. people

  2247. it's

  2248. a

  2249. complete

  2250. it's

  2251. a

  2252. profound

  2253. statement

  2254. of

  2255. our

  2256. common

  2257. humanity

  2258. facing

  2259. a

  2260. common

  2261. God

  2262. it is

  2263. a

  2264. perennial

  2265. rebuke

  2266. of

  2267. caste

  2268. systems

  2269. and

  2270. class

  2271. systems

  2272. as

  2273. it

  2274. grips

  2275. us

  2276. because

  2277. I'm

  2278. running

  2279. out of

  2280. time

  2281. to go

  2282. through

  2283. the

  2284. rest

  2285. of

  2286. the

  2287. text

  2288. and

  2289. read

  2290. the

  2291. rest

  2292. of

  2293. the

  2294. text

  2295. but

  2296. it's

  2297. such

  2298. a

  2299. powerful

  2300. story

  2301. we'll

  2302. talk

  2303. about

  2304. it

  2305. more

  2306. in

  2307. the

  2308. coming

  2309. weeks

  2310. I

  2311. just

  2312. want

  2313. to

  2314. put

  2315. one

  2316. other

  2317. thing

  2318. about

  2319. it

  2320. because

  2321. you

  2322. have

  2323. to

  2324. connect

  2325. this

  2326. to

  2327. the

  2328. gospel

  2329. you

  2330. do

  2331. what's

  2332. one

  2333. of

  2334. the

  2335. best

  2336. known

  2337. verses

  2338. if

  2339. you're

  2340. an

  2341. evangelical

  2342. for

  2343. God

  2344. so

  2345. loved

  2346. the

  2347. world

  2348. that

  2349. he

  2350. gave

  2351. his

  2352. only

  2353. begotten

  2354. son

  2355. to

  2356. the

  2357. end

  2358. that

  2359. world

  2360. that

  2361. he

  2362. gave

  2363. his

  2364. only

  2365. begotten

  2366. son

  2367. to

  2368. the

  2369. end

  2370. that

  2371. all

  2372. who

  2373. believe

  2374. in

  2375. him

  2376. will

  2377. not

  2378. perish

  2379. but

  2380. have

  2381. everlasting

  2382. life

  2383. see

  2384. one

  2385. of

  2386. the

  2387. things

  2388. that

  2389. this

  2390. story

  2391. communicates

  2392. to

  2393. us

  2394. it

  2395. actually

  2396. speaks

  2397. into

  2398. the

  2399. gospel

  2400. and

  2401. it

  2402. speaks

  2403. into

  2404. our

  2405. mistaken

  2406. attempts

  2407. to

  2408. use

  2409. religion

  2410. and

  2411. ritual

  2412. and

  2413. spirituality

  2414. and

  2415. self

  2416. help

  2417. techniques

  2418. and

  2419. technologies

  2420. to

  2421. somehow

  2422. bring

  2423. real

  2424. new

  2425. life

  2426. to

  2427. us

  2428. if

  2429. you

  2430. could

  2431. put

  2432. we

  2433. see

  2434. in

  2435. this

  2436. story

  2437. that

  2438. only

  2439. God

  2440. can

  2441. breathe

  2442. life

  2443. into

  2444. Adam

  2445. and

  2446. Eve

  2447. so

  2448. only

  2449. God

  2450. can

  2451. breathe

  2452. new

  2453. life

  2454. into

  2455. the

  2456. fallen

  2457. dying

  2458. Adam

  2459. and

  2460. Eve

  2461. and

  2462. their

  2463. sons

  2464. and

  2465. daughters

  2466. to

  2467. make

  2468. us

  2469. born

  2470. again

  2471. like

  2472. the

  2473. story

  2474. as

  2475. it

  2476. sets

  2477. and

  2478. stage

  2479. something

  2480. right

  2481. because

  2482. you

  2483. see

  2484. you

  2485. know

  2486. I

  2487. want

  2488. to

  2489. think

  2490. that

  2491. by

  2492. my

  2493. choice

  2494. is

  2495. I

  2496. can

  2497. make

  2498. new

  2499. life

  2500. by

  2501. I

  2502. can

  2503. do

  2504. something

  2505. I

  2506. can

  2507. say

  2508. enough

  2509. Hail

  2510. Mary's

  2511. I

  2512. can

  2513. memorize

  2514. enough

  2515. of

  2516. the

  2517. Bible

  2518. I

  2519. can

  2520. sing

  2521. enough

  2522. praise

  2523. songs

  2524. I

  2525. can

  2526. learn

  2527. how to

  2528. do

  2529. all

  2530. of

  2531. these

  2532. types

  2533. of

  2534. things

  2535. and

  2536. that

  2537. somehow

  2538. that

  2539. will

  2540. create

  2541. this

  2542. new

  2543. life

  2544. in me

  2545. but

  2546. nothing

  2547. like

  2548. that

  2549. will

  2550. create

  2551. new

  2552. life

  2553. in

  2554. us

  2555. just

  2556. as

  2557. the

  2558. creation

  2559. story

  2560. tells

  2561. us

  2562. that

  2563. only

  2564. God

  2565. can

  2566. breathe

  2567. and

  2568. so

  2569. at

  2570. a

  2571. very

  2572. basic

  2573. fundamental

  2574. level

  2575. there's

  2576. this

  2577. rejection

  2578. of

  2579. religion

  2580. this

  2581. rejection

  2582. of

  2583. spirituality

  2584. this

  2585. rejection

  2586. of

  2587. technique

  2588. this

  2589. rejection

  2590. of

  2591. self

  2592. help

  2593. gurus

  2594. and

  2595. self

  2596. help

  2597. practice

  2598. there is

  2599. a

  2600. fundamental

  2601. level

  2602. not

  2603. that

  2604. you

  2605. can't

  2606. do

  2607. things

  2608. to

  2609. help

  2610. yourself

  2611. not

  2612. that

  2613. you

  2614. should

  2615. never

  2616. use

  2617. a

  2618. ritual

  2619. not

  2620. but

  2621. that

  2622. if

  2623. our

  2624. trust

  2625. is

  2626. in

  2627. that

  2628. it's

  2629. this

  2630. fundamental

  2631. thing

  2632. that

  2633. we

  2634. are

  2635. going

  2636. to

  2637. need

  2638. God

  2639. to

  2640. give

  2641. us

  2642. new

  2643. life

  2644. and

  2645. that

  2646. only

  2647. he

  2648. can

  2649. do

  2650. it

  2651. I

  2652. can't

  2653. add

  2654. 10%

  2655. to

  2656. it

  2657. I

  2658. can't

  2659. add

  2660. 50%

  2661. to

  2662. it

  2663. I

  2664. can't

  2665. even

  2666. add

  2667. a

  2668. half

  2669. of

  2670. 1%

  2671. to

  2672. it

  2673. it

  2674. has

  2675. to

  2676. be

  2677. 100%

  2678. God

  2679. giving

  2680. me

  2681. new

  2682. life

  2683. and

  2684. so

  2685. that

  2686. as

  2687. the

  2688. world

  2689. view

  2690. of

  2691. this

  2692. story

  2693. comes

  2694. to

  2695. us

  2696. then

  2697. when

  2698. we

  2699. come

  2700. to

  2701. John

    John 3 chapter mention

  2702. chapter

  2703. 3

  2704. 16

  2705. for

  2706. God

  2707. so

  2708. loved

  2709. the

  2710. world

  2711. that

  2712. he

  2713. gave

  2714. his

  2715. one

  2716. and

  2717. only

  2718. son

  2719. to

  2720. the

  2721. end

  2722. that

  2723. all

  2724. that

  2725. believe

  2726. in

  2727. him

  2728. shall

  2729. not

  2730. perish

  2731. but

  2732. have

  2733. eternal

  2734. life

  2735. we

  2736. say

  2737. yes

  2738. only

  2739. God

  2740. can

  2741. breathe

  2742. that

  2743. new

  2744. life

  2745. and

  2746. all

  2747. I

  2748. can

  2749. do

  2750. is

  2751. ask

  2752. that

  2753. in

  2754. his

  2755. mercy

  2756. unworthy

  2757. as

  2758. I

  2759. am

  2760. that

  2761. he

  2762. would

  2763. give

  2764. it

  2765. to

  2766. me

  2767. and

  2768. we

  2769. can

  2770. have

  2771. this

  2772. confidence

  2773. when

  2774. we

  2775. think

  2776. about

  2777. the

  2778. cross

  2779. that

  2780. God

  2781. will

  2782. never

  2783. say

  2784. no

  2785. to

  2786. anybody

  2787. who

  2788. says

  2789. I

  2790. have

  2791. sinned

  2792. I

  2793. am

  2794. helpless

  2795. to

  2796. save

  2797. myself

  2798. I

  2799. have

  2800. come

  2801. to

  2802. the

  2803. point

  2804. where

  2805. I

  2806. know

  2807. that

  2808. I

  2809. need

  2810. the

  2811. life

  2812. that

  2813. only

  2814. you

  2815. can

  2816. give

  2817. me

  2818. would

  2819. you

  2820. do

  2821. it

  2822. for

  2823. me

  2824. please

  2825. in

  2826. Jesus

  2827. name

  2828. and

  2829. God

  2830. will

  2831. turn

  2832. no

  2833. one

  2834. away

  2835. please

  2836. stand

  2837. let's

  2838. bow

  2839. our

  2840. heads

  2841. in

  2842. prayer

  2843. father

  2844. you

  2845. know

  2846. how

  2847. hard

  2848. it

  2849. is

  2850. to

  2851. go

  2852. against

  2853. the

  2854. grain

  2855. in

  2856. our

  2857. culture

  2858. and

  2859. father

  2860. we

  2861. give

  2862. you

  2863. thanks

  2864. and

  2865. praise

  2866. that

  2867. there's

  2868. so

  2869. much

  2870. in

  2871. our

  2872. culture

  2873. that

  2874. we

  2875. don't

  2876. have

  2877. to

  2878. go

  2879. against

  2880. the

  2881. grain

  2882. father

  2883. there's

  2884. so

  2885. many

  2886. really

  2887. smart

  2888. people

  2889. learning

  2890. about

  2891. science

  2892. and

  2893. father

  2894. you

  2895. invite

  2896. us

  2897. to

  2898. learn

  2899. about

  2900. science

  2901. we

  2902. might

  2903. not

  2904. be

  2905. smart

  2906. some

  2907. of

  2908. us

  2909. are

  2910. but

  2911. to

  2912. the

  2913. best

  2914. of

  2915. our

  2916. abilities

  2917. father

  2918. you

  2919. invite

  2920. us

  2921. to

  2922. learn

  2923. about

  2924. astronomy

  2925. and

  2926. physics

  2927. and

  2928. geology

  2929. and

  2930. you

  2931. invite

  2932. us

  2933. to

  2934. learn

  2935. about

  2936. music

  2937. and

  2938. art

  2939. and

  2940. business

  2941. and

  2942. you

  2943. invite

  2944. us

  2945. to

  2946. be

  2947. creative

  2948. in

  2949. our

  2950. home

  2951. that

  2952. we

  2953. don't

  2954. have

  2955. to

  2956. worry

  2957. about

  2958. that

  2959. father

  2960. but

  2961. sometimes

  2962. father

  2963. you

  2964. ask

  2965. us

  2966. to

  2967. you

  2968. teach

  2969. us

  2970. true

  2971. truth

  2972. that

  2973. goes

  2974. against

  2975. our

  2976. culture

  2977. and

  2978. you

  2979. know

  2980. how

  2981. hard

  2982. it

  2983. is

  2984. for

  2985. us

  2986. to

  2987. do

  2988. that

  2989. father

  2990. we

  2991. ask

  2992. that

  2993. your

  2994. holy

  2995. spirit

  2996. would

  2997. move

  2998. and

  2999. work

  3000. within

  3001. us

  3002. so

  3003. that

  3004. we

  3005. would

  3006. be

  3007. a

  3008. counter

  3009. cultural

  3010. people

  3011. loving

  3012. this

  3013. city

  3014. and

  3015. loving

  3016. our

  3017. nation

  3018. and

  3019. seeking

  3020. father

  3021. the

  3022. good

  3023. of

  3024. this

  3025. city

  3026. and

  3027. the

  3028. good

  3029. of

  3030. this

  3031. nation

  3032. as

  3033. we

  3034. bear

  3035. witness

  3036. to

  3037. Jesus

  3038. father

  3039. make

  3040. us

  3041. such

  3042. a

  3043. people

  3044. make

  3045. us

  3046. disciples

  3047. of

  3048. Jesus

  3049. gripped

  3050. by

  3051. the

  3052. gospel

  3053. humbly

  3054. living

  3055. for your

  3056. glory

  3057. and

  3058. for the

  3059. good

  3060. of

  3061. people

  3062. and

  3063. of

  3064. this

  3065. city

  3066. and

  3067. this

  3068. we

  3069. ask

  3070. in

  3071. Jesus

  3072. name

  3073. Amen

  3074. Amen
