  1. Father, sometimes your word goes against the grain of what is said in our culture.

  2. Sometimes, Father, you call us to be a peculiar people,

  3. saying and believing things which don't fit in well with polite conversation.

  4. And, Father, you know how timid we are.

  5. You know how we turn away from this because we want to fit in.

  6. And we ask, Father, that you would bring your word home to us in a very deep way.

  7. And as your word is brought home deeply to us, may you grant us healing, may you restore us,

  8. and may you help us to live in a way that blesses this city and brings you great glory.

  9. And this we ask in Jesus' name. Amen.

  10. Amen.

  11. Today's reading, some of you might be wondering what's the fuss about Genesis 1, 26 to 31,

  12. but today's reading directly touches on the issue of abortion,

  13. doctor-assisted suicide or euthanasia, same-sex marriage, and the entire transgender movement.

  14. In other words, nothing controversial in Canada whatsoever,

  15. and nothing by which the Bible might disagree with what would be just taken as common sense knowledge

  16. by basically every media outlet in the country,

  17. at least official or the institutional media,

  18. or in university campuses, or in the judiciary, or in the government.

  19. Nothing controversial at all.

  20. So let's get our Bibles out.

  21. Let's look at it and see what it is that the Bible says,

  22. and why is it that this is sort of, you know, from one point of view, dynamite in a good sense,

  23. from another point of view, dynamite in a bad sense.

  24. And we'll just have a look at it.

  25. And as I said, yeah, there's Bibles there.

  26. Feel free to grab one.

  27. And we're going to begin by looking at Genesis 1, verses 24 to 25,

    Genesis 1:24–25

  28. because it's all part of the sixth day of creation.

  29. And so Genesis is the very, very first book.

  30. In fact, it should probably be in most of your Bibles, the very first page in your Bible.

  31. And we'll read these very simple but very profound verses.

  32. And here's how it begins.

  33. Verse 24.

  34. And God said,

  35. Now, just a, you know, a very, very simple thing here.

  36. God gives a, it's going to be sort of relevant to what we're going to see about what happens when God speaks to human beings.

  37. But God, basically, he makes all of the living, all the things that have breath that are on the land.

  38. And it's really important to notice that the Bible doesn't use scientific language.

  39. If a biologist was to try to use this division to classify, you know, bugs and other things, it's not helpful.

  40. But one of the wisdom, one of the things which is so wise about this biblical account is it uses the language of perception.

  41. And the language of perception is never out of date.

  42. You know, if this was written by the way science would classify different animals in the 1500s, in the 1600s, they'd laugh.

  43. And then they'd laugh at how we would do it in the 1600s, in the 1700s, and on and on and on.

  44. And however scientists do it today, if Jesus tarries, in 100 years, the scientists in 100 years would laugh at the way it's done today.

  45. They'd view it as primitive.

  46. And it's really interesting about how the Bible is written.

  47. It's written from the language of perception.

  48. And that doesn't change.

  49. You know, you've got animals you care for.

  50. You have beasts that are out everywhere else.

  51. You have things that crawl.

  52. I mean, that's a pretty simple division.

  53. And they're given the command to be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.

  54. But then, look at what happens in verse 26.

  55. And it's a very, very simple two words.

  56. Then God said.

  57. Three words.

  58. Then God said.

  59. But it's very, very significant.

  60. Because what happens is that, and we're going to see it later on in the text, about how on one hand, human beings are like an animal.

  61. But on the other hand, there's something which is completely and utterly different about human beings.

  62. And when in verse 26, when it says, then God said.

  63. It's as if God's drawing a huge line between animals and human beings.

  64. In fact, it's not just a line.

  65. And it's definitely not a line in the sand.

  66. A line in the sand.

  67. Some people will refer to that.

  68. But a line in the sand is just arbitrary.

  69. God is describing a grand canyon chasm between the animals and human beings in a very significant way.

  70. And this is really important because it's been lost in our culture.

  71. There's been a thing in the press just recently about a woman on trial for giving water to pigs.

  72. And that's not particularly significant.

  73. But what's significant is what the newspaper coverage, the language was that to give water to pigs going to slaughter was the same as giving water to Jewish people going to be killed in the gas ovens under Nazism.

  74. Now, just apart from the unbelievable insult to compare it from a Jewish perspective, an unclean animal to a Jewish person, which just shows that they don't know what they're talking about.

  75. That's an idea which, I mean, most people would just sense that that's wrong, but not be able to articulate why it is that you can't make equate a pig and a human being as of the same value.

  76. And the Bible teaches why that is a wrong idea.

  77. There's this grand canyon-sized chasm with these three simple words, then God said.

  78. So let's read it.

  79. Verse 26.

  80. Then God said, let us make man, and I'm going to continue with the singular here, the ESV.

  81. It's very helpful.

  82. I'll explain why in a moment.

  83. It's actually a singular collective.

  84. And in fact, actually, the word man here is actually Adam.

  85. Because in the original language, Adam can either mean human beings, all human beings, or it can be a name of a person.

  86. And to try to make it not overly confusing that uses the word man here rather than Adam, but in the original Hebrew, it's the same word.

  87. But I'm going to stick with it.

  88. I know it's not proper English in Canada in 2017, but it's trying to capture a very powerful biblical idea.

  89. Then God said, let us make man in our image, after our likeness.

  90. So that's a very short description of the nature of human beings.

  91. It's going to be continued next week when we look at a certain part of Genesis 2.

  92. And then it gives the vocation for human beings.

  93. And let them, and this is very accurate, uses the singular man, but it's obvious that the word man is referring to all human beings.

  94. That's why here it says, and let them, it's plural.

  95. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.

  96. Now what's going to happen in the rest of this, from verses 27 to 31, in a bit of a boring grammar geeky type of moment.

  97. But we know who the, you know, we know who we are, the boring grammar geek types.

  98. What Paul, what the writer is going to do now is he's going to loop back and unpack the nature of human beings and their vocation.

  99. And verse 27 is going to clarify and expand upon what it means to be in the image of God.

  100. And then 28 to 31 is going to clarify what it means to have dominion.

  101. And in our cultural moment, all of the bombs and mind, all of the minds and bombs and the controversial bits are primarily in verse 27.

  102. And I'm just going to read it and we're going to talk about the vocation of human beings.

  103. That's 28 to 31 first, but then I'm going to loop back.

  104. I'm not going to ignore the, you know, the controversial bit.

  105. Okay?

  106. So that's what we're going to do.

  107. Let's just read verse 27 to 31 and I'll just comment on it and we'll sort of summarize what it means.

  108. So God created man in his own image.

  109. In the image of God, he created him.

  110. Male and female, he created them.

  111. And God blessed them.

  112. And God said to them, be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.

  113. And God said, behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of the earth and every tree with seed in its fruit.

  114. You shall have them for food.

  115. And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.

  116. And it was so.

  117. And God saw everything that he had made and behold, it was very good.

  118. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

  119. So here's the thing which this text is, this thing about the vocation of human beings.

  120. And if you could put up the first point.

  121. The first point is this.

  122. The cosmos was made for humanity and humanity was made for the cosmos.

  123. This is a very, very, very, very, very, very important idea in the whole Bible.

  124. And it's a very important idea in terms of what it means to be human.

  125. And it's a very countercultural idea.

  126. You know, in fact, in just about everything that is done here, I could do a sermon, a whole sermon on each of these different points.

  127. I really could because there's an increasing move of thought within our culture that somehow or another human beings are the problem on the planet.

  128. That we're the problem.

  129. We're the virus.

  130. We're the germ.

  131. But the Bible says it's something completely and utterly different.

  132. And it's to understand here.

  133. So when the Bible is giving us our vocation, what is our vocation?

  134. If you look down to verse 28 again, it's to be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.

  135. That's the first thing.

  136. What does it mean to have dominion?

  137. Well, God made us to be here.

  138. And the cosmos itself needs us.

  139. Rather than us being the problem, per se, by our nature.

  140. Okay, we're going to get into why it's a bit of a problem.

  141. But by our nature, God made us for this planet and not just for the planet, for the cosmos.

  142. And we are to fill it and to multiply.

  143. As an aside, for those of us who are married, who can still have children,

  144. and physically we can, this is a profound encouragement to see children as a blessing.

  145. And to have children.

  146. Like to not listen to our culture that says that children are just an adornment to our life,

  147. something that we have if it's convenient and fits, and we should have very few.

  148. This is an encouragement to view children and being able to have them as a great gift that we should rejoice in

  149. and not turn away from.

  150. So the first aspect of what it means to have dominion over the created order is that we are to be fruitful

  151. and multiply and fill the earth.

  152. And the second is subdue it and have dominion.

  153. I know this is a very, very uncomfortable idea,

  154. but it's this idea that God wants us to tame areas that are very, very wild.

  155. Like if you were in Holland, it's a good thing that some land was reclaimed by putting dikes out into the ocean.

  156. Like it's a good thing to take what would normally happen in a field and to turn it into a garden,

  157. to subdue it and have dominion over it.

  158. That when we're looking at a beautiful garden, if you go to PEI,

  159. and one of the wonderful things about driving through PEI is just how well-ordered the land is,

  160. how it seems as if most of it has been cultivated, and it looks so beautiful.

  161. And that sense that it looks so beautiful is in a sense that the Genesis 1 here,

  162. in a good sense, is being practiced.

  163. And it's right for us to rejoice in it.

  164. It's not right to say it's terrible,

  165. because think of some of the animals that can no longer live there.

  166. That's a wrong way of understanding it.

  167. And then the third thing is to notice that God gives it.

  168. So look at verse 28 again.

  169. And God blessed them, and God said to them,

  170. Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it,

  171. and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens,

  172. and over every living thing that moves on the earth.

  173. And God said, Behold, I have given you.

  174. I have given you.

  175. Okay, God gives it.

  176. This is really, really, really, really important.

  177. If you could put up the next point.

  178. Human, humanity was created to be God's stewards of the cosmos, of the planet,

  179. not to be self-appointed dictators and tyrants.

  180. Humanity, human beings were created to live in this home,

  181. and the world needs us.

  182. And we are to understand ourselves that the world,

  183. the trees, who ultimately owns the trees,

  184. not the state,

  185. not the United Nations, but God.

  186. Who owns the rivers?

  187. Who owns the ocean?

  188. Who owns the sky?

  189. Ultimately, God.

  190. And some of that is put under our care,

  191. either individually because of private property,

  192. or in some collective way through the state,

  193. or some business or corporation.

  194. But in every case, we're ultimately stewards,

  195. because God gives it, but doesn't relinquish being God.

  196. He doesn't stop being God when he gives it to us.

  197. And that means that we are to understand ourselves as God's stewards.

  198. But what has happened is, we're going to look at this,

  199. and it's really not going to be until two weeks from now,

  200. when we look at Genesis 3,

  201. where we talk about the tragedy that has befallen the human race

  202. by human beings rebelling against God,

  203. so that now the image of God,

  204. our nature is bent, and it's marred,

  205. and our rule, and our place in the planet,

  206. it's now, we're too prone to become dictators.

  207. We're too prone to become tyrants.

  208. We're too prone to say,

  209. it's my bleepity bleep piece of property,

  210. and if I want to bleepity bleep,

  211. put chemicals on it, or do this to it,

  212. it's my bleepity bleep business.

  213. And that's the language of a despot, of a tyrant.

  214. It's of a dictator, self-appointed,

  215. a refusal to acknowledge that ultimately,

  216. the earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof.

  217. That the heavens declare the glory of God,

  218. and the firm proclaims his handiwork,

  219. and we as human beings are his stewards to sing his praises

  220. and to care for things in a way so that the entire planet flourishes

  221. to the glory of God and to the good of people,

  222. because we are God's stewards.

  223. We are God's stewards.

  224. Now, the naughty or the awkward bit.

  225. Let me just share with you something.

  226. I'm, you know, I think some of you have heard me share before

  227. that I'm not very naturally religious.

  228. Left to my own devices, I think if I hadn't become a Christian,

  229. I like watching football.

  230. I like watching sports.

  231. You know, I like exercising.

  232. I like reading books.

  233. I like doing what I like to do.

  234. And probably most of the time,

  235. it wouldn't involve anything religious or spiritual.

  236. I'm just confessing to you.

  237. And, you know, there's been many, many times in my Christian life

  238. that, you know, I want to go along with something in the culture.

  239. I have this idea, and I go reading the Bible,

  240. hoping that the Bible is going to validate what I believe

  241. or what I want or what I think is wise.

  242. And I've had many experiences throughout my Christian life

  243. as I come to the Bible and to my horror and my shock.

  244. I can remember different times where I've gotten red in the face

  245. and a bit sweaty under the armpits

  246. because it's dawned on me that what the Bible says

  247. goes against what I want

  248. and what I believe and what I think is wise.

  249. I've had that experience many times.

  250. So I can sympathize with those who are present

  251. who've helped facilitate an abortion

  252. or helped who are same-sex attracted

  253. and are living it out or want to live it out

  254. or those who are very, very uncomfortable

  255. in their biological sex

  256. and hope that when they go to the Bible,

  257. because they still have a desire to know God and to love God,

  258. and when they go to the Bible to their horror,

  259. what they desire is not what they find.

  260. And that's what we're going to find here

  261. for all of those different classes of what I've just described.

  262. And so this isn't a political rally.

  263. This isn't an us versus them.

  264. Every single person here in this room,

  265. whether it's being same-sex attracted

  266. or being uncomfortable with your gender and your biology,

  267. or whether it's abortion,

  268. not a single person in this room

  269. has not been touched by it either directly

  270. or with loved ones or co-workers or neighbors.

  271. And so this is God's word to us.

  272. It's not a political rally,

  273. and it's not a time to make jokes.

  274. It's not necessarily a time to have long faces.

  275. It isn't.

  276. Because ultimately, in every case

  277. where I've come to the Bible

  278. and it's gone against what I've wanted,

  279. over time I've come to believe

  280. that the Bible, in fact,

  281. has only good news and is wise.

  282. So it's just really,

  283. look at verse 26 and 27.

  284. Notice at the beginning of 26,

  285. then God said,

  286. let us make man in our image,

  287. after our likeness.

  288. And in the original language,

  289. image and likeness,

  290. there's no words in between them.

  291. It's just image and likeness.

  292. And it's basically just,

  293. it's reinforcing the same idea

  294. with slightly different words.

  295. It's not two technically different words,

  296. image and likeness,

  297. not like some theologies.

  298. And the big idea is this image.

  299. And then jump down to verse 27,

  300. and this is the dynamite.

  301. And it's interesting.

  302. It's a short little poem,

  303. three lines of poetry.

  304. And on one hand,

  305. it's the simplest thing in the world

  306. to understand.

  307. On the other hand,

  308. it is something that

  309. if we were to meditate upon it,

  310. if artists and poets and philosophers

  311. and musicians and composers,

  312. they could spend the rest of their life

  313. meditating upon the world,

  314. that these three simple lines open up to us

  315. to explore it.

  316. So God created man in his own image.

  317. In the image of God,

  318. he created him.

  319. Male and female,

  320. he created them.

  321. Say it again.

  322. So God created man in his own image.

  323. In the image of God,

  324. he created him.

  325. Male and female,

  326. he created them.

  327. To memorize this verse

  328. would be very helpful.

  329. So here's the,

  330. and you'll notice at 26,

  331. it says,

  332. made in our image.

  333. And then just a few verses later,

  334. a few lines later,

  335. it says image twice.

  336. So in three times,

  337. in a very short span,

  338. this idea of human beings

  339. being made in God's images

  340. is spoken,

  341. spoken,

  342. spoken.

  343. It's very,

  344. very important.

  345. And here I just want to try

  346. to unpack a little bit.

  347. If you could put up the first point,

  348. the next point,

  349. only,

  350. and I put it in bracket,

  351. in quote marks,

  352. just to try to help bring it out.

  353. Only man is created by God

  354. in his own image.

  355. That's what the text is saying.

  356. Only man,

  357. and here it's referring to the human race,

  358. it's using one singular word

  359. to emphasize,

  360. it's a very,

  361. very important here.

  362. That's why I didn't use the word humanity,

  363. and I understand why

  364. English translations

  365. who are helping us

  366. just read the text for ourselves

  367. will put in the word humanity.

  368. But humanity is sort of too diverse,

  369. you know?

  370. Man really brings home to us

  371. this commonness

  372. that human beings share.

  373. It's in fact

  374. a profoundly important text.

  375. This text,

  376. only man,

  377. is created by God

  378. in his own image,

  379. means that all slavery is wrong.

  380. It means that all oppression

  381. and persecution is wrong.

  382. It means that all racism is wrong.

  383. It means all attempts

  384. to view castes in society

  385. is wrong.

  386. All attempts by elites

  387. to think that they are better than others

  388. is wrong.

  389. All focus on social class

  390. as indicating that some people

  391. are better than others

  392. is wrong.

  393. It is,

  394. governments can give rights

  395. and courts can give rights

  396. and they can take them away.

  397. And it's not entirely clear

  398. if we have just evolved

  399. randomly

  400. why it is exactly

  401. that all human beings

  402. have a value

  403. and a dignity

  404. and worth.

  405. But the Bible

  406. says that,

  407. what does it say?

  408. It says,

  409. so God created man

  410. in his own image.

  411. In the image of God,

  412. he created him.

  413. Male and female,

  414. he created them.

  415. And he does not say

  416. that black people

  417. bear it more than white people

  418. or that Asians

  419. bear it more than people

  420. who are,

  421. you know,

  422. First Nations in Canada.

  423. It does not have

  424. any categories like that.

  425. And it uses the singular word

  426. to emphasize it.

  427. It is a powerful,

  428. precious word

  429. and it is dynamite

  430. to our courts

  431. and our country.

  432. So God created man

  433. in his own image.

  434. In the image of God,

  435. he created him.

  436. Male and female,

  437. he created them.

  438. Next point, please.

  439. Here's also,

  440. so we all like it,

  441. it's against racism.

  442. Look at that,

  443. that singular word.

  444. It's so good.

  445. Oh, dang!

  446. For many of us.

  447. Because it does not say,

  448. and so human beings,

  449. when they are smart,

  450. or human beings,

  451. when they are powerful,

  452. or human beings,

  453. when they are young,

  454. bear God's image.

  455. No!

  456. How do human beings come about?

  457. We begin as a fertilized cell

  458. in our mother's womb.

  459. Some of us don't live very long.

  460. Some of us don't survive the womb.

  461. Some of us don't survive

  462. the first year.

  463. Some of us live to be,

  464. who's that guy

  465. who just died in Milton, Ontario,

  466. 86 or 84?

  467. And just last year,

  468. he set the age record

  469. in the marathon.

  470. Some of us live long lives

  471. of being very handicapped.

  472. But what is this text telling us?

  473. From our beginning

  474. as a fertilized cell

  475. and to our death,

  476. we bear God's image.

  477. Down syndrome,

  478. Einstein,

  479. Usain Bolt,

  480. equally bear God's image.

  481. which is why it is

  482. that the Bible

  483. is so consistent

  484. to say that it is wrong

  485. to take innocent human life.

  486. It means it is wrong

  487. to kill a gay person

  488. because he's gay.

  489. It's wrong to kill

  490. a transgender person

  491. because they are transgender.

  492. It is wrong to kill

  493. a fetus in a womb

  494. because it's a fetus,

  495. because that's a human being.

  496. And it's wrong to kill

  497. an old person

  498. because they're old.

  499. And it's wrong

  500. to kill a sick person

  501. because they're sick.

  502. I don't know

  503. if any of you

  504. have had a chance

  505. to go to church on Wednesday,

  506. but one of the really

  507. great things

  508. that Daniel has brought about

  509. in church on Wednesday

  510. is that after the sermon

  511. has been preached,

  512. there's a bit of a gap sometimes,

  513. but then people can text

  514. in their questions.

  515. And you have to sort of

  516. think on your feet.

  517. And one of the things,

  518. I've done this a couple of times,

  519. I did it on Ash Wednesday,

  520. and every time

  521. that I've done it,

  522. there's always been

  523. at least one fairly wordy,

  524. direct question.

  525. And I'm 99% sure

  526. as I'm listening to the question

  527. that the person is hoping

  528. who asks the question

  529. that when I hear the question,

  530. it's going to sort of

  531. knock me back a little bit

  532. and make me want to say,

  533. well, you know,

  534. maybe this, maybe that,

  535. maybe this, maybe that.

  536. And every time that it's come,

  537. I've taken a bit

  538. of a perverse delight.

  539. And after the question's read,

  540. I either say yes or no.

  541. And then I'll say next question.

  542. And I'm going to do that

  543. a little bit right now.

  544. George, are you saying

  545. that the Bible is heterosexist?

  546. Are you saying, George,

  547. in this day and age,

  548. don't you know

  549. what they teach in university?

  550. Are you actually claiming

  551. that the Bible naively teaches

  552. binary understanding of reality

  553. in terms of human life?

  554. Like, is the Bible

  555. so completely and utterly foolish

  556. to teach a binary understanding?

  557. A heterosexist understanding?

  558. That there's only two sexes

  559. and a gender that goes with each sex?

  560. Is that what you're saying, George?

  561. Yes.

  562. Yes.

  563. So God created man

  564. in his own image.

  565. In the image of God,

  566. he created him.

  567. Male and female,

  568. he created them.

  569. And then I guess I'd say,

  570. well, I want to take away

  571. the accusation stuff.

  572. But yes,

  573. if you could put up

  574. the next point, please.

  575. Just to make sure we understand

  576. this very simple thing.

  577. So God created man

  578. in his own image.

  579. In the image of God,

  580. he created him.

  581. Male and female,

  582. he created them.

  583. If you've memorized that

  584. by the end of the service,

  585. I've done a great good for you.

  586. What does this say?

  587. God created only

  588. two biological sexes,

  589. each having its own gender.

  590. Notice how it creates man,

  591. biological,

  592. male and female,

  593. gender.

  594. Notice that again.

  595. Man and him,

  596. referring to the biological reality,

  597. male and female,

  598. gender.

  599. See, if it had just said,

  600. so God created man

  601. in his own image.

  602. In the image of God,

  603. he created him.

  604. And then it went on.

  605. We could wonder whether,

  606. in fact,

  607. there can be many genders

  608. to go along

  609. with the two biological sexes.

  610. But this tightly worded poem,

  611. this dynamite,

  612. in a few words,

  613. says that God created

  614. only two biological sexes,

  615. each having its own gender.

  616. If you could put up

  617. the next point,

  618. here's it to say,

  619. again,

  620. the same thing,

  621. the same way.

  622. And by the way,

  623. if you're interested

  624. in writing these points down,

  625. they'll be on the webpage.

  626. And if you use your version,

  627. it's part of the notes.

  628. God did not only create

  629. man and woman.

  630. He also created the man

  631. to be male

  632. and the woman to be female.

  633. God did not only create

  634. man and woman.

  635. He also created the man

  636. to be male

  637. and the woman to be female.

  638. What's the text say again?

  639. So God created man

  640. in his own image.

  641. In the image of God,

  642. he created him.

  643. Male and female,

  644. he created them.

  645. Now,

  646. just as a bit of an aside,

  647. I watched a really interesting

  648. documentary on Netflix

  649. a week or two ago

  650. on Anthony Robbins,

  651. the self-help guy.

  652. And,

  653. you know,

  654. it's interesting.

  655. The Bible here

  656. leaves so much unsaid.

  657. It gives us

  658. a basic direction

  659. to think,

  660. but doesn't fill it in.

  661. Obviously,

  662. the Bible's going to go on

  663. and say a few more things

  664. if you read it

  665. from cover to cover

  666. about being male and female.

  667. But it's amazing

  668. what it doesn't say.

  669. You know,

  670. one of the things,

  671. if you watch this documentary

  672. of Anthony Robbins,

  673. it's a fascinating thing.

  674. You know,

  675. people pay $5,000

  676. to spend six days with him.

  677. Five grand U.S.

  678. before taxes.

  679. And,

  680. you know,

  681. one of the things he does,

  682. it's not like he just says,

  683. oh yeah,

  684. you're great,

  685. you're great,

  686. you're great.

  687. I mean,

  688. he tells people off.

  689. People will spend $5,000 U.S.

  690. for six days

  691. to be told off in public.

  692. It's really,

  693. it's a fascinating documentary

  694. to watch.

  695. And there's one time in it

  696. where he goes after a guy

  697. for being a feminine man.

  698. I'm not making this up.

  699. And,

  700. you know,

  701. the interesting thing in here

  702. is the Bible doesn't say,

  703. okay,

  704. now we know all about men.

  705. Men are good with tools.

  706. You know,

  707. men,

  708. you know,

  709. men like to hunt.

  710. You know,

  711. women like to cook.

  712. It doesn't do this,

  713. does it?

  714. Like,

  715. it makes it clear

  716. that these realities exist.

  717. And if you read all of the Bible,

  718. you'll start to get

  719. some other senses

  720. about what's in there.

  721. But it leaves a wide range

  722. of freedom and variability.

  723. But in it all,

  724. it makes it clear

  725. that

  726. in the language today,

  727. Jeremiah and Anna

  728. had a baby this week.

  729. and it's a baby girl.

  730. And she wasn't assigned

  731. being a girl.

  732. It wasn't as if

  733. the baby came out of the womb

  734. and Jeremiah and Anna said,

  735. well,

  736. I don't know,

  737. should it be a boy or a girl?

  738. They said,

  739. it's a girl.

  740. And that's what the Bible teaches.

  741. Here's another thing,

  742. if you could put it up.

  743. Man and woman

  744. are equally created

  745. in God's image.

  746. And our complementarity

  747. is also in God's image.

  748. Man and woman

  749. are equally created

  750. in God's image.

  751. And our complementarity

  752. is also in God's image.

  753. Listen to the Bible.

  754. So God created man

  755. in his own image.

  756. In the image of God,

  757. he created him.

  758. Male and female,

  759. he created them.

  760. Men and women

  761. have their own integrity.

  762. Any culture

  763. that treats women

  764. like chattel,

  765. like slaves,

  766. is condemned

  767. by this biblical text.

  768. Any family

  769. or relationship

  770. where the man

  771. abuses the woman

  772. is condemned

  773. in this text.

  774. Any culture

  775. that says

  776. that women

  777. only have value

  778. if they can produce

  779. children

  780. is condemned

  781. in this text.

  782. this text.

  783. This text

  784. is both

  785. a profound comfort

  786. for those of us

  787. who will find ourselves

  788. being single

  789. our whole lives.

  790. It doesn't say

  791. that you only have value

  792. if you're attached

  793. to a man

  794. or to a woman.

  795. You only have value

  796. if you can have

  797. sexual knowing.

  798. You can only have value

  799. if you can produce.

  800. It denies all of this.

  801. It's a profoundly

  802. important and freeing text

  803. on the dignity

  804. of every human being,

  805. every man and woman,

  806. regardless as to whether

  807. or not they are married,

  808. regardless as to their

  809. ability to produce.

  810. That there's an inherent

  811. worth

  812. and value

  813. and dignity

  814. as a bearer

  815. of God's image.

  816. And at the same time,

  817. while on one hand

  818. you can say

  819. that every man and woman

  820. bears God's image,

  821. at the same time,

  822. God chose to have

  823. men and women,

  824. male and female,

  825. that somehow

  826. the complementarity

  827. that goes with the equality

  828. somehow even more

  829. shows who God is

  830. and what He's like.

  831. Now,

  832. some people have

  833. a great deal of trouble

  834. with the body

  835. that they have.

  836. And there are many people

  837. in our culture

  838. who are biologically male

  839. or biologically female

  840. and that's a very,

  841. very, very complicated

  842. thing for them

  843. and causes them pain.

  844. Just as there are

  845. many people

  846. in our culture

  847. who find themselves

  848. in a male body

  849. but desire to sexually

  850. know people

  851. with the same body

  852. as themselves.

  853. And one thing

  854. which is very important

  855. for us to understand

  856. is that we should

  857. never, ever, ever

  858. say yuck to this.

  859. And we should never

  860. believe that that's

  861. something which has

  862. merely been chosen.

  863. Sometimes

  864. for people

  865. who labor

  866. and suffer under that

  867. it's something

  868. that goes back

  869. as early

  870. as they have memories.

  871. And this call

  872. to view people

  873. with their dignity

  874. and worth

  875. is very important.

  876. But this text here

  877. is not saying

  878. that even if we

  879. are born

  880. in such a way

  881. that from our

  882. earliest memories

  883. we have these desires.

  884. It's not saying

  885. that that

  886. is how we are

  887. made in God's image.

  888. Could you just reverse,

  889. could you put,

  890. I think,

  891. that's two points

  892. from now up right now

  893. rather than the one

  894. I was going to,

  895. I think I gave you?

  896. We still bear

  897. the image of God

  898. but it is bent

  899. and marred.

  900. We're going to look

  901. at that in Genesis 3

  902. in a couple of weeks.

  903. But it's just

  904. really important

  905. for us to understand

  906. that everything,

  907. it's not just

  908. if you're very

  909. uncomfortable,

  910. you're biologically male

  911. but you don't identify

  912. with being a male

  913. at all

  914. or you're biologically female

  915. and you just don't identify.

  916. it's not as if

  917. just people like this

  918. are broken.

  919. If you look in a mirror

  920. and you look around

  921. every single person

  922. in the room

  923. is made in God's image

  924. and every one of us

  925. are bent

  926. or marred

  927. in different ways.

  928. So you can't just go

  929. purely from current

  930. human experience

  931. to extrapolate

  932. and we're going to talk

  933. about that

  934. a little bit more.

  935. But this is all

  936. very, very, very good news.

  937. I mean,

  938. not only is it good news

  939. because it's the basis

  940. of human rights

  941. but it's the good news

  942. because it begins

  943. to help us

  944. to understand

  945. who God is

  946. and here's how

  947. it's good news.

  948. You know,

  949. I like movies

  950. and I probably

  951. don't like,

  952. I mean,

  953. believe it or not,

  954. I actually sometimes

  955. watch more thoughtful movies.

  956. I just don't watch junk.

  957. But, you know,

  958. if you imagine a movie

  959. about an alien coming,

  960. let's say all of a sudden

  961. an alien

  962. ship crashed

  963. right beside

  964. one of our hospitals

  965. and they all go,

  966. the doctors and the nurses,

  967. they go running in.

  968. I mean,

  969. it wouldn't happen nowadays

  970. because they'd want to get,

  971. you know,

  972. all the masks on

  973. so they don't get diseases

  974. but just imagine

  975. they go running in

  976. or however they go in

  977. and they're not clear

  978. when they look at the alien

  979. and let's say the alien

  980. can't communicate with them

  981. and we're not clear

  982. as human beings

  983. is the alien sick

  984. and need help

  985. or is the alien healthy

  986. and we don't know.

  987. Why don't we know?

  988. Here's the thing.

  989. I sit on the toilet

  990. and something comes out of me

  991. that's brown.

  992. That's good.

  993. You know,

  994. in another context,

  995. something comes out of me

  996. yellowish.

  997. That's good.

  998. If all of a sudden

  999. I started to have red blood

1000. coming out of my eyes

  1001. or my ears

  1002. or my mouth,

  1003. we'd all know

  1004. that's bad.

  1005. Why?

  1006. Because we know

  1007. what health looks like.

1008. If we go to a human,

  1009. I mean,

1010. if we go to an alien

  1011. and red stuff

1012. is coming out of its mouth,

  1013. we have no idea

  1014. whether that's a bad sign

  1015. or a good sign.

  1016. Maybe

  1017. what we call

  1018. brown stuff

1019. coming out of one end

1020. is red for the alien

  1021. and comes out

  1022. of a different part

  1023. of its body.

1024. And I'm not just saying

  1025. that to be silly.

  1026. We really wouldn't know.

  1027. And, you know,

  1028. the other day

  1029. I'm having some problems

  1030. with my steering

  1031. in my car

  1032. and I just assumed

  1033. that I had a leak

  1034. in my power steering

  1035. and I went

  1036. to look.

1037. I was going to go

  1038. to Canadian Tire

1039. and get it topped up

1040. so I can get it fixed

  1041. on Monday or Tuesday

  1042. and I go

  1043. and I look

1044. at my power steering level

  1045. and it's not low.

1046. And so I stick something in

1047. and the color comes out

1048. and I go to the owner's manual

  1049. and the owner's manual

  1050. written by the designer

  1051. tells me basically

1052. that if the steering fluid

  1053. is brown

  1054. that's not good.

  1055. It should be pink.

  1056. At least pinkish

1057. but best of all, pink.

  1058. So here's what's so good news

  1059. about this

1060. is that the Bible here

  1061. is letting us know

  1062. what health looks like.

  1063. And it knows

  1064. it's telling us

  1065. the direction

  1066. that we can go

  1067. towards health.

  1068. So God created man

  1069. in his own image

1070. and the image of God

  1071. he created him.

  1072. Male and female

  1073. he created them.

1074. If you could put up

  1075. the point, Andrew,

  1076. which I guess

1077. we sort of jumped over,

  1078. human beings

  1079. are not Lego.

1080. Did you get a picture

1081. of that by the way?

  1082. There you go.

  1083. In case you don't

  1084. have grandchildren

  1085. or you're too old

1086. to have played with Lego

1087. when you were a kid.

1088. There's all sorts of movies

  1089. about Lego people.

1090. And the fact of the matter is

1091. is that in much of our culture

  1092. the way we understand

  1093. being human now

  1094. aided by medical technology

1095. that can do all sorts

  1096. of unbelievable things.

  1097. It can pump us

  1098. full of hormones.

1099. It can do plastic surgery.

  1100. It can do all...

  1101. Medicine can do

  1102. all sorts of things.

1103. And if we come up

  1104. in a culture

  1105. whereby increasingly

  1106. we just see ourselves

  1107. as accidents,

  1108. as just stuff,

  1109. and that...

  1110. Well, it's increasingly

  1111. we understand ourselves

  1112. as Lego creatures.

  1113. Well, you can just

  1114. snap that head off,

1115. put a different head on.

1116. You can snap that torso off.

  1117. You can put on

  1118. a different torso.

1119. You can design the Lego

  1120. in such a way

  1121. that things pop out

  1122. in different spots.

  1123. And the hands

  1124. or the legs

  1125. are all longer.

  1126. And it's a very, very...

  1127. You know, we don't

  1128. consciously think like this

  1129. but increasingly

  1130. in our culture

  1131. we understand ourselves

  1132. with the analogy

  1133. of being Lego.

1134. And so when we want

  1135. to fix ourselves

1136. we go by our feelings

  1137. and the best thoughts

  1138. that we have

  1139. and we just figure

  1140. we'll do Lego processes

1141. to fit with what we feel

  1142. because that's how

  1143. we understand

  1144. what health is.

  1145. But the Bible here

  1146. is telling us

  1147. that God created man

  1148. in his own image

1149. and the image of God

  1150. he created him.

  1151. Male and female

  1152. he created them.

  1153. And the Bible

  1154. will also reveal

  1155. that we're broken.

  1156. And that's why

1157. if you could put up

  1158. the next point

  1159. we are to understand

  1160. that Jesus is

  1161. like an art restorer.

  1162. A masterpiece restorer.

  1163. He is not like

  1164. a Lego builder.

  1165. And we his disciples

  1166. have to learn

  1167. to follow him.

  1168. See, this is

  1169. the wonderful thing

  1170. to know that

  1171. I am made

  1172. in God's image.

  1173. And there are

  1174. different ways

  1175. that I am made

  1176. in God's image

  1177. that I am bent

  1178. and I am broken.

  1179. And maybe it is

  1180. that I have

  1181. a huge desire

  1182. for pornography.

  1183. Maybe it is

  1184. that I have

  1185. this uncontrollable

  1186. desire to flirt

  1187. or possess

  1188. as many women

  1189. as I have

  1190. as I can.

  1191. Maybe my bentness

  1192. is that I have

  1193. absolutely no interest

  1194. in any of those

  1195. types of things.

  1196. Maybe my bentness

  1197. or my brokenness

  1198. is uncomfortable

  1199. with the biology.

  1200. And there are

  1201. so many different ways

  1202. and all of us

  1203. are bent or broken

  1204. in some particular way.

  1205. And the thing

  1206. that we can take

  1207. is that not only

  1208. is the Bible

  1209. communicating to us

  1210. what health is like,

  1211. it means that

  1212. when Jesus comes

  1213. into our life,

  1214. he sees that image,

  1215. the masterpiece,

1216. in all of its uniqueness.

  1217. And just as

  1218. if somebody was

1219. to give a Van Gogh

  1220. or a Picasso

  1221. that had been found

  1222. in an attic

  1223. and was very damaged

  1224. and gave it

  1225. to the National Gallery,

  1226. they would hire

  1227. the best art restorer

1228. they could at all afford

  1229. to restore

  1230. the beauty

  1231. of the masterpiece.

  1232. And that's how

  1233. Jesus deals with us.

  1234. He is a masterpiece

  1235. restorer,

  1236. not a Lego builder.

  1237. One final thing

  1238. just in closing.

1239. If you could put it up,

1240. here's one of the problems

  1241. that we all have.

  1242. Because we are so

  1243. infected with our culture,

  1244. with a notion

  1245. that somehow or another

1246. human beings are like plastic,

  1247. that in some ways

  1248. we're like Lego people,

  1249. we can't understand,

1250. like in a Lego world,

1251. how could one Lego creature,

  1252. how could their life

  1253. matter to everybody's

  1254. other than the fact

  1255. that we might be

  1256. interested in it?

1257. And many of us wonder,

  1258. because we come

  1259. from this Lego perspective,

  1260. how is it

  1261. that Jesus' death

  1262. upon the cross,

  1263. that that could somehow

1264. stand for me or you

  1265. here in Ottawa,

1266. and it could also stand

  1267. for somebody in Korea,

  1268. and somebody in China,

  1269. and somebody in Singapore,

  1270. and somebody in Kenya,

  1271. and somebody above

  1272. the Arctic Circle.

1273. And from a Lego perspective,

1274. that doesn't make any sense.

  1275. But if,

  1276. so God created man

  1277. in his own image,

1278. in the image of God,

  1279. he created him.

  1280. Male and female,

  1281. he created them.

  1282. If in fact,

1283. human beings are one humanity,

1284. bearing the image of God,

1285. then only the image itself

  1286. can stand for all

1287. who are made in God's image.

1288. so Jesus' life and death

  1289. can stand for me,

  1290. and you,

  1291. and you,

  1292. and you,

  1293. and you,

  1294. and every person

1295. who receives him by faith

  1296. as Savior and Lord.

  1297. You see,

1298. if Genesis 1 is true,

  1299. the image itself

  1300. can stand

  1301. both his perfect righteousness

  1302. and his bearing

  1303. the consequence

  1304. of our sin

  1305. and our bentness

  1306. and brokenness.

  1307. The image itself

  1308. can stand

  1309. for every person

1310. made in the image of God.

  1311. The cross

  1312. makes sense.

  1313. And Jesus died

  1314. not to erase

  1315. or destroy the image,

  1316. but as

  1317. a masterpiece

  1318. restorer

  1319. to begin

  1320. to restore us

  1321. to the image,

  1322. the masterpiece

  1323. that God

  1324. desires us to be.

  1325. Could you please stand?

  1326. Just a moment

  1327. of,

  1328. a bit of a pause.

  1329. If you're here today

  1330. and

  1331. for the first time

  1332. the gospel

  1333. begins to make sense

  1334. to you

1335. and you feel a pressure

  1336. to come to Jesus,

1337. let me just tell you,

  1338. it doesn't matter

  1339. what your issue is.

  1340. Jesus just desires

1341. to come into your life

  1342. and to be like

  1343. that masterpiece

  1344. restorer.

  1345. That's what he'll do

1346. when he is your Savior

1347. and he is your Lord.

1348. That's what he will do.

  1349. And his death

  1350. upon the cross

  1351. and his resurrection

  1352. can stand for you,

  1353. can be for you

  1354. if you receive it

  1355. by faith.

  1356. And there's no time

  1357. better than right now

  1358. to just call out

1359. to him in your own words

  1360. that he will be

  1361. your Savior

  1362. and your Lord

  1363. and he will not

  1364. turn you away.

1365. And for the rest of us

  1366. we all know

  1367. the different ways

  1368. that we need

  1369. Jesus to work

  1370. in our lives

  1371. to bring restoration

  1372. to us.

  1373. To have a sense

  1374. of restoring

  1375. our sense of dignity

  1376. and worth

1377. that is given to us

  1378. by God himself.

  1379. This text tells us

  1380. of how unbelievably

  1381. precious we are

  1382. to God.

  1383. So precious

  1384. that not only

  1385. did he create us

  1386. but that God,

  1387. the Son of God

  1388. would die upon

  1389. the cross for us.

1390. And at the same time

  1391. it starts to point

  1392. towards Genesis 3

  1393. and our great need

  1394. for God,

  1395. for only God

  1396. to come and work

  1397. in our lives.

  1398. Father,

1399. if there are any here

  1400. who today have

  1401. crossed that divide

  1402. and asked Jesus

  1403. to be their Savior

  1404. and their Lord,

  1405. Father,

1406. pour out your Holy Spirit

  1407. upon them

  1408. and draw them

  1409. ever closer to yourself.

  1410. Father,

1411. for those who are still

1412. trying to think things through,

1413. pour out your Holy Spirit

  1414. upon them

  1415. and draw them

  1416. to yourself.

  1417. Father,

  1418. for those of us

  1419. who have maybe

  1420. right from our family

  1421. of origin

  1422. or maybe sometime

  1423. in our past

  1424. we've given our lives

  1425. more consciously

  1426. to Jesus

  1427. but we know

  1428. he's our Savior

  1429. and our Lord.

  1430. Father,

  1431. you know the issues

  1432. in our life

  1433. that are bent

  1434. and are marred

  1435. and we give you

  1436. permission,

  1437. Father.

  1438. You are wise.

  1439. You are the masterpiece

  1440. restorer.

1441. You know how to restore us

  1442. and we give you

  1443. permission to move

  1444. with your Holy Spirit

  1445. and bring your word

  1446. to bear to us

  1447. at our point

  1448. of deepest need

  1449. to work a work

  1450. of restoration

  1451. within us.

  1452. Father,

1453. pour out your Holy Spirit

  1454. upon us.

  1455. Make us disciples

  1456. of Jesus

  1457. gripped by the gospel

  1458. learning to be restored

  1459. by you

  1460. and be an agent

  1461. of restoration

  1462. in others

  1463. so that we

  1464. and all your children

1465. will live for your glory

  1466. and this we ask

  1467. in Jesus' name.

  1468. Amen.

  1469. Amen.
