  1. Now let's read in 1st Samuel chapter 25.

  2. Jeff will preach from this in just a moment but let me read 1st Samuel 25 for us.

  3. Now Samuel died and all Israel assembled and mourned for him and they buried him at his home in Ramah.

  4. Then David moved down into the desert of Paran.

  5. A certain man in Mahon who had property there at Carmel was very wealthy.

  6. He had a thousand goats and three thousand sheep which he was shearing in Carmel.

  7. His name was Nabal and his wife's name was Abigail.

  8. She was an intelligent and beautiful woman but her husband was surly and mean in his dealings.

  9. He was a Calebite.

  10. While David was in the wilderness he heard that Nabal was shearing sheep.

  11. So he sent ten young men and said to them,

  12. Go up to Nabal at Carmel and greet him in my name.

  13. Say to him, Long life to you, good health to you and your household and good health to all that is yours.

  14. Now I hear that it is sheep shearing time.

  15. When your shepherds were with us we did not ill treat them.

  16. And the whole time they were at Carmel nothing of theirs was missing.

  17. Ask your own servants and they will tell you.

  18. Therefore be favourable towards my men since we come at a festive time.

  19. Please give your servants and your son David whatever you can find for them.

  20. When David's men arrived they gave Nabal this message in David's name.

  21. Then they waited.

  22. Nabal answered David's servants,

  23. Who is this David?

  24. Who is this son of Jesse?

  25. Many servants are breaking away from their masters these days.

  26. Why should I take my bread and water and the meat that I have slaughtered for my shearers

  27. and give it to men coming from who knows where?

  28. David's men turned round and went back.

  29. When they arrived they reported every word.

  30. David said to his men,

  31. Each of you strap on your sword.

  32. So they did.

  33. And David strapped his on as well.

  34. About 400 men went up with David while 200 stayed with the supplies.

  35. One of the servants told Abigail, Nabal's wife,

  36. David sent messengers from the wilderness to give our master his greetings but he hurled insults at them.

  37. These men were very good to us.

  38. They did not ill treat us and the whole time we were out in the fields near them nothing was missing.

  39. Night and day they were a wall around us the whole time we were herding our sheep near them.

  40. Now think it over and see what you can do because disaster is hanging over our master and his whole household.

  41. He is such a wicked man that no one can talk to him.

  42. Abigail acted quickly.

  43. She took 200 loaves of bread, two skins of wine, five dressed sheep, five sears of roasted grain,

  44. a hundred cakes of raisins and 200 cakes of pressed figs and loaded them on donkeys.

  45. Then she told her servants,

  46. Go on ahead, I'll follow you.

  47. But she did not tell her husband Nabal.

  48. As she came riding her donkey into a mountain ravine,

  49. there were David and his men descending towards her and she met them.

  50. David had just said,

  51. It's been useless.

  52. All my watching over this fellow's property in the wilderness so that nothing of his was missing.

  53. He has paid me back evil for good.

  54. May God deal with David, be it ever so severely if by morning I leave alive one male of all who belong to him.

  55. When Abigail saw David, she quickly got off her donkey and bowed down before David with her face to the ground.

  56. She fell at his feet and said,

  57. Pardon your servant, my lord, and let me speak to you.

  58. Hear what your servant has to say.

  59. Please pay no attention, my lord, to that wicked man Nabal.

  60. He is just like his name.

  61. His name means fool and folly goes with him.

  62. And as for me, your servant, I did not see the men, my lord said.

  63. And now, my lord, as surely as the lord your God lives and as you live,

  64. since the lord has kept you from bloodshed and from avenging yourself with your own hands,

  65. may your enemies and all who are intent on harming my lord be like Nabal.

  66. And let this gift, which your servant has brought to my lord, be given to the men who follow you.

  67. Please forgive your servant's presumption.

  68. The lord your God will certainly make a lasting dynasty for my lord,

  69. because you fight the lord's battles,

  70. and no wrongdoing will be found in you as long as you live.

  71. Even though someone is pursuing you to take your life,

  72. the life of my lord will be bound securely in the bundle of the living by the lord your God.

  73. By the lives of your enemies he will hurl away as from the pocket of a sling.

  74. When the lord has fulfilled for my lord every good thing he promised concerning him,

  75. and has appointed him ruler over Israel,

  76. my lord will not have on his conscience the staggering burden of needless bloodshed,

  77. or of having avenged himself.

  78. And when the lord your God has brought my lord success,

  79. remember your servant.

  80. David said to Abigail,

  81. Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel,

  82. who has sent you today to meet me.

  83. May you be blessed for your good judgment and for keeping me from bloodshed this day,

  84. and from avenging myself with my own hands.

  85. Otherwise, as surely as the Lord, the God of Israel lives,

  86. who has kept me from harming you,

  87. if you had not come quickly to meet me,

  88. not one male belonging to Nabal would have been left alive by daybreak.

  89. Then David accepted from her hand what she had brought to him and said,

  90. Go home in peace.

  91. I have heard your words and granted your request.

  92. When Abigail went to Nabal,

  93. he was in the house holding a banquet like that of a king.

  94. He was in high spirits and very drunk,

  95. so she told him nothing at all until daybreak.

  96. Then, in the morning, when Nabal was sober,

  97. his wife told him all these things,

  98. and his heart failed him,

  99. and he became like a stone.

  100. About ten days later,

  101. the Lord struck Nabal and he died.

  102. When David heard that Nabal was dead,

  103. he said,

  104. Praise be to the Lord,

  105. who has upheld my cause against Nabal for treating me with contempt.

  106. He has kept his servant from doing wrong

  107. and has brought Nabal's wrongdoing down on his own head.

  108. Then David sent word to Abigail,

  109. asking her to become his wife.

  110. His servants went to Carmel and said to Abigail,

  111. David has sent us to you to take you to become his wife.

  112. She bowed down with her face to the ground and said,

  113. I am your servant and I'm ready to serve you

  114. and wash the feet of my Lord's servants.

  115. Abigail quickly got on a donkey and,

  116. attended by her five female servants,

  117. went with David's messengers and became his wife.

  118. David had also married a Hinoam of Jezreel,

  119. and they both were his wives.

  120. But Saul had given his daughter,

  121. Michiel, David's wife,

  122. to Paltiel, son of Laish,

  123. who was from Galim.

  124. Amen.

  125. This is God's word.

  126. Now it's a pleasure to hand over to Jeff now.

  127. Former US President, JFK,

  128. when he was on his election campaign

  129. to be elected as President of the United States,

  130. he met an elderly woman.

  131. She said,

  132. you're one of the Kennedy brothers,

  133. aren't you?

  134. So both JFK and his brother, Robert,

  135. were in politics,

  136. and both looked remarkably similar.

  137. He said,

  138. yes, that's right,

  139. I'm one of the Kennedy brothers.

  140. And she said,

  141. I just want to say,

  142. I think you've done a terrific job

  143. on the Senate Racket Committee.

  144. And JFK said,

  145. no, sorry,

  146. that was my brother.

  147. And she says,

  148. it is?

  149. Well,

  150. those seven beautiful children you have,

  151. aren't they wonderful?

  152. Well, JFK responded,

  153. no,

  154. that's my brother.

  155. And she said,

  156. oh, well,

  157. just tell your brother all the best

  158. in his bid to become the president.

  159. JFK quickly said,

  160. no,

  161. that's me.

  162. Here is a case of mistaken identity.

  163. And it's that topic

  164. that we'll be talking about

  165. and discussing this morning

  166. in the case of Nabal and David

  167. in the passage that was read earlier.

  168. When our identity is in Jesus,

  169. everything has its perfect balance

  170. rightly in our lives.

  171. But when our identity is not in Jesus,

  172. it so often can have a damaging effect

  173. on ourselves

  174. and on those around us.

  175. For example,

  176. in our work life,

  177. we get a promotion at work

  178. or we finish off a project

  179. and our boss praises it,

  180. thinks it's amazing.

  181. It could have the tendency

  182. to puff us up

  183. and we can find our identity in it.

  184. But then what happens

  185. when we don't do so well at work,

  186. when our boss is on our case,

  187. it can really crush us

  188. and damage us.

  189. However,

  190. when our identity is in Jesus Christ,

  191. everything has its rightful place.

  192. Finding our identity in Jesus

  193. meets three key tests,

  194. which I believe are key

  195. to finding out

  196. whether something is worth

  197. having your identity in or not.

  198. There's the firstly,

  199. the joy test.

  200. Is this thing or person

  201. going to give me deep and lasting joy?

  202. The second test

  203. is the life ruling test.

  204. Is this thing or person

  205. worth centering my life upon?

  206. And third of all,

  207. the eternity test.

  208. Is this thing or person

  209. really worth staking

  210. my eternal destiny upon?

  211. Now, this is not just a message

  212. for non-Christians

  213. about how they need

  214. to find their identity in Jesus.

  215. This is a message

  216. that says also

  217. about how Christians

  218. to have an identity,

  219. have a tendency

  220. to find their identity

  221. in things and in people

  222. other than Jesus.

  223. Very often,

  224. we struggle

  225. with a mistaken identity.

  226. Our culture,

  227. our society,

  228. will say we need

  229. X, Y and Z

  230. to really truly be happy

  231. in life.

  232. So many things

  233. are seeking our devotion

  234. and seeking to pull us away

  235. from Jesus.

  236. Christians are not exempt from it.

  237. But let's go to the text

  238. and really see these issues

  239. of identity really begin

  240. to play out in 1 Samuel.

  241. We're introduced in verse 2

  242. to a man named Nabal.

  243. Now, Nabal,

  244. if you're interested

  245. in the meaning of names,

  246. Nabal in Hebrew,

  247. the original language,

  248. actually means full

  249. and we'll begin to see that

  250. as time goes on.

  251. He's very wealthy,

  252. we're told,

  253. and sheep and goats.

  254. We're then introduced

  255. to his wife, Abigail,

  256. who's beautiful and intelligent,

  257. which is then immediately

  258. contrasted to Nabal

  259. who is harsh and evil

  260. in all his dealings.

  261. And then David

  262. comes into the narrative.

  263. So it says that David

  264. heard that Nabal

  265. was shearing sheep.

  266. And so David

  267. tells his men,

  268. go and ask Nabal

  269. for a share of his wealth.

  270. And so at this point

  271. you could be tempted,

  272. what's David doing

  273. just going up to

  274. a rich guy

  275. and asking for his money?

  276. I mean,

  277. that seems a bit strange.

  278. But it's not asking

  279. for a handout.

  280. David's not asking

  281. for a handout.

  282. He's asking for his

  283. rightful wage.

  284. We know this because

  285. in verses 7, 15 and 16,

  286. we read about how

  287. David and his men

  288. protected Nabal's men

  289. and Nabal's animals

  290. from harm,

  291. from theft.

  292. And so we could argue

  293. that even in part

  294. some of Nabal's wealth

  295. is down to David's

  296. and his men's diligence.

  297. And so David's men

  298. go and ask Nabal

  299. for provision

  300. and are flat out rejected.

  301. In fact,

  302. worse yet,

  303. Nabal says,

  304. who is this David?

  305. Who is Jesse's son?

  306. I don't know

  307. who you're talking about.

  308. And then he goes

  309. even further

  310. and says,

  311. in fact,

  312. I don't even know

  313. where you guys come from.

  314. You might be from

  315. a really dodgy place.

  316. I'm not,

  317. I'm not entertaining this.

  318. Go home.

  319. In verse 14,

  320. we read the account

  321. of one of Nabal's servants

  322. who saw this going on.

  323. And it says that he,

  324. that Nabal railed

  325. at David's men.

  326. He shouted at David's men.

  327. He wanted to keep his hands

  328. on David's rightful shares

  329. so that his wealth

  330. could go unaffected.

  331. And we begin to see

  332. what's ruling

  333. Nabal's heart at this point.

  334. What he's really finding

  335. his identity in.

  336. though that case

  337. is going to go stronger

  338. as time goes on.

  339. His identity

  340. is based on his wealth.

  341. And we see that

  342. not only by how

  343. he shamelessly denies

  344. David and his men

  345. their rightful wage

  346. so that he could

  347. keep a hold of his money.

  348. But also in his

  349. love of money,

  350. we also see

  351. how his

  352. love of money

  353. had shaped

  354. how his peers

  355. viewed him.

  356. We see in verse 17

  357. one of his

  358. servants said,

  359. Nabal's a worthless man.

  360. Nobody can even

  361. approach him.

  362. And then in verse 25

  363. his own wife Abigail

  364. calls him a worthless

  365. fellow.

  366. And his love of money

  367. as his wealth grew

  368. so too did his ego.

  369. And he thought

  370. he was unstoppable.

  371. He was untouchable.

  372. He was the king

  373. of his world.

  374. Being so

  375. unapproachable,

  376. unbearable

  377. as he was,

  378. it really poisoned

  379. his relationships.

  380. And he loved his money

  381. so much

  382. that it would mean

  383. he would treat

  384. his servants,

  385. he would treat

  386. his own wife

  387. so poorly

  388. that they would

  389. consider him

  390. worthless.

  391. Falling on from

  392. the pleas of Abigail

  393. and her giving generously

  394. to David,

  395. David agrees

  396. to relent

  397. from his attack.

  398. Abigail then

  399. goes to tell

  400. Nabal

  401. what happened

  402. only to find

  403. Nabal

  404. drunk

  405. in the middle

  406. of a feast

  407. like that

  408. of a king.

  409. Now in verse 36

  410. there's that addition

  411. a feast

  412. like that

  413. of a king

  414. and

  415. that addition

  416. is not

  417. random

  418. it's not to get

  419. the author's

  420. word count up

  421. but this is actually

  422. an insight

  423. into what Nabal

  424. thinks about himself.

  425. He thinks himself

  426. so great

  427. he thinks his wealth

  428. so grand

  429. that he considers

  430. himself like

  431. a king.

  432. Once he sobered up

  433. Abigail went

  434. and told him

  435. what had happened

  436. with David

  437. and upon hearing

  438. that part of his

  439. wealth was taken

  440. away

  441. the ESV translation

  442. puts it really strongly

  443. his heart

  444. within him died.

  445. Such powerful

  446. language

  447. his heart

  448. within him died

  449. and so we see

  450. what his identity

  451. is wrapped up in

  452. his wealth

  453. and we see that

  454. because of how he

  455. responded to

  456. and treated David's

  457. men

  458. how he treated

  459. those around him

  460. how those around him

  461. consequently viewed him

  462. as a worthless fellow

  463. and then

  464. we see that

  465. too

  466. in his response

  467. to part of that

  468. wealth

  469. being taken away

  470. it literally

  471. killed him

  472. and that

  473. is the power

  474. of finding

  475. your identity

  476. in something

  477. it becomes

  478. your all

  479. in all

  480. it becomes

  481. a dictator

  482. over whether

  483. we have

  484. a good mood

  485. or a bad mood

  486. it becomes

  487. all consuming

  488. it becomes

  489. the director

  490. of our

  491. eternal destiny

  492. for Nabal

  493. he was at his

  494. happiest

  495. when he was

  496. having drunken

  497. feasts

  498. enjoying

  499. all his

  500. wealth

  501. and grandeur

  502. but he

  503. was at his

  504. very lowest

  505. and we see

  506. that in his

  507. death

  508. at his very

  509. lowest

  510. when part

  511. of that

  512. wealth

  513. was taken

  514. away

  515. we all

  516. have

  517. identity

  518. battles

  519. in our

  520. hearts

  521. things that

  522. we

  523. struggle

  524. with

  525. things that

  526. we place

  527. our hopes

  528. our joys

  529. and our

  530. plans

  531. in

  532. things that

  533. dictate our

  534. mood

  535. and rule

  536. our lives

  537. now this

  538. might look

  539. differently

  540. for each

  541. and every

  542. one of us

  543. for you

  544. it might be

  545. power

  546. you might

  547. have your

  548. identity

  549. wrapped up

  550. in being

  551. honoured

  552. being respected

  553. being thought

  554. well of

  555. maybe it's

  556. like Nabal

  557. you have

  558. your identity

  559. wrapped up

  560. in your

  561. wealth

  562. and

  563. you know

  564. you might

  565. be having

  566. feasts

  567. fit for a

  568. king

  569. while your

  570. neighbour

  571. next door

  572. is going

  573. down to

  574. the local

  575. food bank

  576. the problem

  577. with these

  578. things

  579. is not

  580. money

  581. we need

  582. money

  583. to feed

  584. ourselves

  585. to clothe

  586. ourselves

  587. to pay

  588. our bills

  589. the problem

  590. is not

  591. being respected

  592. or being

  593. honoured

  594. the bible

  595. actually has

  596. quite a lot

  597. of positive

  598. things to

  599. say about

  600. respecting

  601. and honouring

  602. one another

  603. and the

  604. problem comes

  605. in though

  606. when these

  607. things become

  608. ultimate

  609. in our lives

  610. when our

  611. lives are

  612. ruled by

  613. money

  614. our lives

  615. are ruled

  616. by having

  617. to be

  618. respected

  619. and honoured

  620. as I said

  621. earlier

  622. this is as

  623. much an

  624. issue for

  625. Christians

  626. as it is

  627. non-Christians

  628. and we

  629. see that

  630. in David's

  631. response

  632. so David's

  633. men come

  634. back and

  635. tell him

  636. what's

  637. happened

  638. in the

  639. encounter

  640. with

  641. Nabal

  642. that

  643. Nabal

  644. has

  645. rejected

  646. the

  647. request

  648. rejected

  649. knowledge

  650. of him

  651. insinuated

  652. that they

  653. were no

  654. users

  655. from goodness

  656. knows

  657. where

  658. and David

  659. is raging

  660. he's

  661. fizzing

  662. he

  663. so much

  664. so that

  665. he goes

  666. and gets

  667. his sword

  668. and tells

  669. his men

  670. go and

  671. do

  672. likewise

  673. he wants

  674. to go

  675. and have

  676. it out

  677. with

  678. Nabal

  679. let's

  680. see

  681. who's

  682. the

  683. big

  684. man

  685. now

  686. sort

  687. of

  688. thing

  689. on

  690. verse

  691. 21

  692. we see

  693. that

  694. David

  695. complains

  696. all his

  697. service

  698. to

  699. Nabal

  700. was

  701. futile

  702. verse

  703. 22

  704. even

  705. brings

  706. God

  707. into

  708. the

  709. equation

  710. you

  711. see

  712. David

  713. was

  714. angry

  715. because

  716. he

  717. thought

  718. he

  719. deserved

  720. more

  721. honour

  722. more

  723. respect

  724. than

  725. he

  726. was

  727. getting

  728. how

  729. many

  730. of

  731. us

  732. have

  733. been

  734. there

  735. with

  736. our

  737. bosses

  738. you

  739. know

  740. we

  741. don't

  742. think

  743. that

  744. we're

  745. honoured

  746. or

  747. respected

  748. or given

  749. credit

  750. for

  751. the

  752. things

  753. that

  754. we

  755. think

  756. we

  757. deserve

  758. credit

  759. for

  760. now

  761. whilst

  762. we

  763. may

  764. not

  765. go

  766. to

  767. our

  768. bosses

  769. with

  770. a

  771. sword

  772. in

  773. hand

  774. I'd

  775. certainly

  776. hope

  777. not

  778. the

  779. anger

  780. the rage

  781. that builds

  782. up

  783. in our

  784. hearts

  785. can

  786. sometimes

  787. be

  788. far

  789. more

  790. devastating

  791. it

  792. takes

  793. Abigail

  794. to

  795. bring him

  796. a

  797. generous

  798. portion

  799. also

  800. a

  801. humble

  802. bowing

  803. before

  804. him

  805. cry

  806. for

  807. mercy

  808. in

  809. order

  810. for

  811. David

  812. to

  813. relent

  814. not

  815. only

  816. does

  817. Abigail

  818. do

  819. this

  820. but

  821. she

  822. points

  823. David

  824. to

  825. the

  826. Lord

  827. to

  828. his

  829. justice

  830. and

  831. his

  832. judgment

  833. reminding

  834. David

  835. that

  836. this

  837. is not

  838. David's

  839. to

  840. sort

  841. out

  842. this

  843. is

  844. not

  845. David's

  846. battle

  847. to

  848. fight

  849. justice

  850. and

  851. judgment

  852. belong

  853. to

  854. God

  855. who

  856. will

  857. not

  858. let

  859. the

  860. guilty

  861. go

  862. unpunished

  863. so

  864. what

  865. then

  866. is

  867. the

  868. takeaway

  869. from

  870. all

  871. of

  872. this

  873. don't

  874. be

  875. like

  876. Nabal

  877. don't

  878. be

  879. like

  880. David

  881. be

  882. like

  883. Abigail

  884. Abigail

  885. was

  886. good

  887. Abigail

  888. pointed

  889. her

  890. neighbour

  891. to

  892. the

  893. Lord

  894. Abigail

  895. was

  896. generous

  897. well

  898. well

  899. no

  900. not

  901. exactly

  902. you

  903. see

  904. the

  905. story

  906. is

  907. not

  908. telling

  909. us

  910. a

  911. moral

  912. story

  913. of

  914. what

  915. we

  916. are

  917. to

  918. do

  919. to

  920. find

  921. a

  922. sort

  923. of

  924. goodness

  925. a

  926. morality

  927. within

  928. ourselves

  929. now

  930. my

  931. wife

  932. and

  933. I

  934. have

  935. a

  936. guilty

  937. pleasure

  938. of

  939. hallmark

  940. movies

  941. you

  942. might

  943. know

  944. of

  945. them

  946. you

  947. might

  948. not

  949. they're

  950. on

  951. channel

  952. 5

  953. like

  954. all

  955. the

  956. time

  957. they're

  958. usually

  959. called

  960. something

  961. along

  962. the

  963. lines

  964. of

  965. harvest

  966. moon

  967. or

  968. autumn

  969. dreams

  970. out

  971. workaholic

  972. girl

  973. is

  974. tired

  975. of

  976. the

  977. hustle

  978. and

  979. the

  980. bustle

  981. of

  982. the

  983. city

  984. and

  985. so

  986. moves

  987. out

  988. to

  989. the

  990. town

  991. or

  992. the

  993. village

  994. it's

  995. all

  996. very

  997. idyllic

  998. to

  999. find

  1000. out

  1001. what

  1002. really

  1003. matters

  1004. in

  1005. life

  1006. what

  1007. are

  1008. the

  1009. true

  1010. values

  1011. to

  1012. hold

  1013. to

  1014. upon

  1015. arriving

  1016. she

  1017. goes

  1018. to

  1019. a

  1020. grocery

  1021. store

  1022. or

  1023. she

  1024. goes

  1025. to

  1026. a

  1027. pub

  1028. meets

  1029. a

  1030. handsome

  1031. chap

  1032. and

  1033. although

  1034. initially

  1035. trying

  1036. to

  1037. ignore

  1038. him

  1039. she

  1040. falls

  1041. in

  1042. what

  1043. are

  1044. the

  1045. good

  1046. moral

  1047. values

  1048. to

  1049. hold

  1050. onto

  1051. in

  1052. life

  1053. now

  1054. the

  1055. Bible

  1056. is

  1057. not

  1058. like

  1059. that

  1060. and

  1061. this

  1062. story

  1063. is

  1064. no

  1065. exception

  1066. it's

  1067. not

  1068. a

  1069. compilation

  1070. of

  1071. positive

  1072. and

  1073. inspiring

  1074. stories

  1075. which

  1076. teach

  1077. a

  1078. good

  1079. moral

  1080. value

  1081. that

  1082. we

  1083. take

  1084. away

  1085. and

  1086. apply

  1087. to

  1088. our

  1089. life

  1090. and

  1091. that's

  1092. us

  1093. good

  1094. with

  1095. God

  1096. it's

  1097. not

  1098. like

  1099. that

  1100. the

  1101. Bible

  1102. isn't

  1103. 10

  1104. tips

  1105. to

  1106. personal

  1107. improvement

  1108. so

  1109. that

  1110. we

  1111. could

  1112. be

  1113. the

  1114. hero

  1115. or

  1116. the

  1117. saviour

  1118. of

  1119. our

  1120. story

  1121. the

  1122. Bible

  1123. is

  1124. about

  1125. how

  1126. Jesus

  1127. is

  1128. the

  1129. hero

  1130. Jesus

  1131. is

  1132. the

  1133. saviour

  1134. of

  1135. the

  1136. story

  1137. the

  1138. Bible

  1139. from

  1140. beginning

  1141. to

  1142. end

  1143. every

  1144. page

  1145. every

  1146. book

  1147. of

  1148. the

  1149. Bible

  1150. is

  1151. all

  1152. about

  1153. how

  1154. good

  1155. Jesus

  1156. is

  1157. now

  1158. how

  1159. all

  1160. of

  1161. that

  1162. relates

  1163. to

  1164. the

  1165. question

  1166. of

  1167. identity

  1168. is

  1169. that

  1170. placing

  1171. your

  1172. identity

  1173. in

  1174. something

  1175. it

  1176. becomes

  1177. your

  1178. all

  1179. in

  1180. all

  1181. they

  1182. become

  1183. the

  1184. masters

  1185. of

  1186. your

  1187. life

  1188. everything

  1189. you

  1190. think

  1191. say

  1192. or

  1193. do

  1194. is

  1195. dictated

  1196. to

  1197. you

  1198. by

  1199. your

  1200. identity

  1201. and

  1202. that

  1203. whilst

  1204. money

  1205. sex

  1206. power

  1207. make

  1208. terrible

  1209. masters

  1210. I

  1211. want

  1212. to

  1213. say

  1214. that

  1215. Jesus

  1216. is

  1217. the

  1218. best

  1219. master

  1220. so

  1221. Christian

  1222. or

  1223. non

  1224. Christian

  1225. this

  1226. morning

  1227. whoever

  1228. you

  1229. are

  1230. wherever

  1231. you're

  1232. listening

  1233. from

  1234. look

  1235. to

  1236. Jesus

  1237. and

  1238. find

  1239. your

  1240. identity

  1241. in

  1242. him

  1243. that's

  1244. why

  1245. the

  1246. message

  1247. isn't

  1248. don't

  1249. be

  1250. like

  1251. Nabal

  1252. don't

  1253. be

  1254. like

  1255. David

  1256. be

  1257. like

  1258. Abigail

  1259. because

  1260. in

  1261. this

  1262. identity

  1263. war

  1264. in

  1265. your

  1266. life

  1267. the

  1268. hero

  1269. of

  1270. the

  1271. story

  1272. is

  1273. always

  1274. Jesus

  1275. and

  1276. he's

  1277. the

  1278. only

  1279. one

  1280. who's

  1281. really

  1282. worth

  1283. having

  1284. your

  1285. identity

  1286. fixed

  1287. in

  1288. and

  1289. I'll

  1290. tell

  1291. you

  1292. why

  1293. earlier

  1294. I

  1295. set

  1296. before

  1297. us

  1298. three

  1299. tests

  1300. as

  1301. to

  1302. whether

  1303. something

  1304. is

  1305. worth

  1306. having

  1307. your

  1308. identity

  1309. fixed

  1310. in

  1311. first

  1312. was

  1313. the

  1314. joy

  1315. test

  1316. is

  1317. this

  1318. thing

  1319. is

  1320. this

  1321. person

  1322. going to

  1323. give me

  1324. deep

  1325. and

  1326. lasting

  1327. joy

  1328. the

  1329. second

  1330. was

  1331. the

  1332. life

  1333. ruling

  1334. test

  1335. is

  1336. this

  1337. thing

  1338. or

  1339. person

  1340. worth

  1341. centring

  1342. my

  1343. universe

  1344. on

  1345. and

  1346. thirdly

  1347. the

  1348. eternal

  1349. test

  1350. is

  1351. this

  1352. going

  1353. to

  1354. bear

  1355. fruit

  1356. in

  1357. eternity

  1358. is

  1359. this

  1360. going

  1361. to

  1362. bear

  1363. fruit

  1364. before

  1365. God

  1366. I

  1367. also

  1368. said

  1369. earlier

  1370. that

  1371. everyone

  1372. and

  1373. everything

  1374. apart

  1375. from

  1376. Jesus

  1377. fails

  1378. to

  1379. meet

  1380. this

  1381. test

  1382. and

  1383. we'll

  1384. see

  1385. that

  1386. because

  1387. these

  1388. other

  1389. things

  1390. make

  1391. horrible

  1392. masters

  1393. for

  1394. our

  1395. lives

  1396. I

  1397. want

  1398. to

  1399. say

  1400. that

  1401. Jesus

  1402. is

  1403. the

  1404. best

  1405. master

  1406. and

  1407. makes

  1408. the

  1409. best

  1410. master

  1411. for

  1412. our

  1413. lives

  1414. first

  1415. of

  1416. all

  1417. is

  1418. the

  1419. joy

  1420. test

  1421. I

  1422. want

  1423. to

  1424. go

  1425. to

  1426. John

    John 4 chapter mention

  1427. chapter

  1428. 4

  1429. and

  1430. we

  1431. read

  1432. in

  1433. that

  1434. of

  1435. Jesus

  1436. meeting

  1437. a

  1438. woman

  1439. at

  1440. a

  1441. well

  1442. Jesus

  1443. says

  1444. to

  1445. the

  1446. woman

  1447. you

  1448. drink

  1449. the

  1450. water

  1451. from

  1452. this

  1453. well

  1454. you're

  1455. just

  1456. going

  1457. to

  1458. be

  1459. thirsty

  1460. again

  1461. but

  1462. the

  1463. water

  1464. that

  1465. I

  1466. give

  1467. you

  1468. is

  1469. going

  1470. to

  1471. bubble

  1472. up

  1473. within

  1474. you

  1475. well

  1476. up

  1477. within

  1478. you

  1479. to

  1480. a

  1481. spring

  1482. of

  1483. eternal

  1484. life

  1485. so

  1486. Jesus

  1487. here

  1488. is

  1489. not

  1490. just

  1491. saying

  1492. this

  1493. water

  1494. is

  1495. no

  1496. good

  1497. you

  1498. need

  1499. to

  1500. find

  1501. some

  1502. different

  1503. water

  1504. in

  1505. this

  1506. world

  1507. he's

  1508. pointing

  1509. not

  1510. to

  1511. the

  1512. deficiency

  1513. of

  1514. that

  1515. particular

  1516. water

  1517. from

  1518. that

  1519. particular

  1520. well

  1521. but

  1522. it's

  1523. a

  1524. picture

  1525. of

  1526. the

  1527. deficiency

  1528. of

  1529. all

  1530. things

  1531. apart

  1532. from

  1533. Jesus

  1534. to

  1535. give

  1536. us

  1537. true

  1538. and

  1539. lasting

  1540. satisfaction

  1541. we

  1542. also

  1543. have

  1544. the

  1545. testimony

  1546. of

  1547. the

  1548. apostle

  1549. Paul

  1550. in

  1551. Philippians

  1552. 3

  1553. recounting

  1554. his

  1555. former

  1556. life

  1557. of

  1558. Judaism

  1559. and

  1560. he

  1561. says

  1562. that

  1563. he

  1564. counts

  1565. that

  1566. as

  1567. worthless

  1568. compared

  1569. to

  1570. knowing

  1571. Jesus

  1572. Christ

  1573. now

  1574. before

  1575. we

  1576. think

  1577. that

  1578. Paul

  1579. was

  1580. writing

  1581. that

  1582. at

  1583. a

  1584. really

  1585. swell

  1586. moment

  1587. in

  1588. his

  1589. life

  1590. sitting

  1591. on

  1592. a

  1593. warm

  1594. beach

  1595. somewhere

  1596. sipping

  1597. a

  1598. cocktail

  1599. he

  1600. wasn't

  1601. he

  1602. was

  1603. sitting

  1604. in

  1605. a

  1606. cold

  1607. stony

  1608. Roman

  1609. jail

  1610. cell

  1611. imprisoned

  1612. for

  1613. telling

  1614. other

  1615. people

  1616. about

  1617. Jesus

  1618. Christ

  1619. and

  1620. so

  1621. in

  1622. the

  1623. dark

  1624. confines

  1625. of a

  1626. Roman

  1627. prison

  1628. Jesus

  1629. is

  1630. enough

  1631. for

  1632. you

  1633. and

  1634. me

  1635. today

  1636. in

  1637. poverty

  1638. and

  1639. sickness

  1640. and

  1641. suffering

  1642. Jesus

  1643. and the

  1644. joy

  1645. in him

  1646. is

  1647. sufficient

  1648. the

  1649. second

  1650. issue

  1651. is the

  1652. life

  1653. ruling

  1654. problem

  1655. is this

  1656. thing

  1657. or person

  1658. really worth

  1659. centring my

  1660. life upon

  1661. is Jesus

  1662. worth centring my

  1663. life upon

  1664. I just want

  1665. to read

  1666. some things

  1667. from the

  1668. Bible

  1669. some texts

  1670. from the

  1671. Bible

  1672. that I've

  1673. put together

  1674. that tell us

  1675. about Jesus

  1676. and I'll let

  1677. you make

  1678. up your

  1679. mind

  1680. is Jesus

  1681. really worth

  1682. centring your

  1683. life upon

  1684. heaven

  1685. this Jesus

  1686. who is the

  1687. image of

  1688. the invisible

  1689. God

  1690. greater than

  1691. all the

  1692. angels in

  1693. heaven

  1694. who

  1695. created

  1696. and sustains

  1697. all things

  1698. who despite

  1699. being God

  1700. came down

  1701. to live

  1702. in time

  1703. and space

  1704. to live

  1705. the life

  1706. that we

  1707. should have

  1708. lived on

  1709. our behalf

  1710. to endure

  1711. our shame

  1712. our suffering

  1713. that we

  1714. were due

  1715. on the

  1716. cross

  1717. instead of

  1718. hearing the

  1719. praise of

  1720. angels in

  1721. heaven

  1722. he heard

  1723. the crowds

  1724. cry

  1725. crucify him

  1726. he received

  1727. beatings

  1728. mockings

  1729. sneerings

  1730. he was spat

  1731. at for you

  1732. and for me

  1733. for the joy

  1734. that was set

  1735. before him

  1736. namely this

  1737. joy of seeing

  1738. people like

  1739. you and me

  1740. reconciled

  1741. to God

  1742. our father

  1743. in heaven

  1744. he is the

  1745. only way

  1746. to God

  1747. and he is

  1748. the only way

  1749. the only

  1750. person worthy

  1751. of our

  1752. worship

  1753. and adoration

  1754. Jesus is

  1755. the only

  1756. master

  1757. to have

  1758. died

  1759. for his

  1760. subjects

  1761. which leads

  1762. us on to

  1763. the third

  1764. problem

  1765. which is

  1766. the eternal

  1767. problem

  1768. the eternal

  1769. test

  1770. is Jesus

  1771. worth

  1772. staking

  1773. my eternal

  1774. future on

  1775. well I've

  1776. just said

  1777. that

  1778. Jesus

  1779. is

  1780. the only

  1781. way

  1782. to God

  1783. the father

  1784. Mark

    Mark 8:36

  1785. chapter 8

  1786. verse 36

  1787. he also

  1788. says

  1789. what will it

  1790. profit a man

  1791. if he gains

  1792. the whole

  1793. world

  1794. but forfeits

  1795. his soul

  1796. now what

  1797. Jesus is

  1798. saying here

  1799. is that you

  1800. could be

  1801. perfectly happy

  1802. with having

  1803. the best

  1804. family

  1805. the nicest

  1806. car

  1807. the biggest

  1808. house

  1809. the biggest

  1810. salary

  1811. for your

  1812. job

  1813. but before

  1814. almighty God

  1815. that's gonna

  1816. do you

  1817. no good

  1818. and so from

  1819. an eternal

  1820. perspective

  1821. Jesus is the

  1822. greatest

  1823. master

  1824. not just

  1825. in eternity

  1826. but right

  1827. now

  1828. right here

  1829. right now

  1830. he provides

  1831. deep and

  1832. lasting joy

  1833. he is worth

  1834. revolving our

  1835. lives around

  1836. why can I say

  1837. that with

  1838. certainty

  1839. well

  1840. because Jesus

  1841. who being

  1842. almighty God

  1843. identified with

  1844. us in order

  1845. that we could

  1846. find our

  1847. identity in

  1848. him

  1849. one of my

  1850. favourite

  1851. contemporary

  1852. Christmas songs

  1853. it's called

  1854. How Many

  1855. Kings

  1856. and the chorus

  1857. goes like

  1858. this

  1859. how many

  1860. kings

  1861. stepped down

  1862. from their

  1863. thrones

  1864. how many

  1865. lords have

  1866. abandoned

  1867. their homes

  1868. how many

  1869. greats have

  1870. become the

  1871. least for me

  1872. and how

  1873. many gods

  1874. have torn

  1875. out their

  1876. hearts to

  1877. romance a

  1878. world that

  1879. is torn

  1880. out apart

  1881. how many

  1882. fathers gave

  1883. up their

  1884. sons for

  1885. me

  1886. and I

  1887. highlight

  1888. something

  1889. really

  1890. really

  1891. really

  1892. important

  1893. the

  1894. celebrities

  1895. of our

  1896. day

  1897. do not

  1898. obey the

  1899. law of

  1900. God

  1901. on our

  1902. behalf

  1903. money

  1904. did not

  1905. sacrifice

  1906. itself

  1907. for you

  1908. nails

  1909. did not

  1910. pierce

  1911. the hands

  1912. of

  1913. comfortability

  1914. power

  1915. and prominence

  1916. did not

  1917. stoop down

  1918. as a

  1919. servant

  1920. to save

  1921. you

  1922. the great

  1923. influencers

  1924. of the

  1925. past

  1926. did not

  1927. rise again

  1928. from the

  1929. dead

  1930. to defeat

  1931. death

  1932. for us

  1933. only

  1934. Jesus

  1935. did that

  1936. only

  1937. he did

  1938. that

  1939. for you

  1940. and for

  1941. me

  1942. only

  1943. Jesus

  1944. is

  1945. qualified

  1946. fully

  1947. to be

  1948. master

  1949. over

  1950. your

  1951. life

  1952. run

  1953. from

  1954. all

  1955. else

  1956. that would

  1957. seek

  1958. to be

  1959. masters

  1960. over

  1961. your

  1962. life

  1963. and run

  1964. to

  1965. Jesus

  1966. the

  1967. greatest

  1968. master

  1969. so

  1970. every

  1971. single

  1972. person

  1973. who's

  1974. listening

  1975. wherever

  1976. you're

  1977. listening

  1978. from

  1979. whatever

  1980. background

  1981. you're

  1982. from

  1983. I want

  1984. to say

  1985. look

  1986. to

  1987. Jesus

  1988. to find

  1989. your

  1990. identity

  1991. in him

  1992. look

  1993. to him

  1994. and find

  1995. in him

  1996. a better

  1997. master

  1998. the best

  1999. master

  2000. whilst money

  2001. relationships

  2002. and joy

  2003. have our joy

  2004. fluctuate

  2005. the joy

  2006. that Jesus

  2007. gives

  2008. is

  2009. constant

  2010. that you

  2011. would have

  2012. the deepest

  2013. sense

  2014. of

  2015. hope

  2016. and joy

  2017. and peace

  2018. and assurance

  2019. in him

  2020. this morning

  2021. friends

  2022. put your

  2023. trust in him

  2024. today

  2025. and find

  2026. in him

  2027. your soul's

  2028. deepest

  2029. longings

  2030. look

  2031. to Jesus

  2032. Christ

  2033. the greatest

  2034. master

  2035. let's pray

  2036. heavenly

  2037. father

  2038. we confess

  2039. that we

  2040. are too

  2041. ready to

  2042. run to

  2043. other

  2044. things

  2045. and to

  2046. other

  2047. people

  2048. to try

  2049. and get

  2050. our

  2051. identity

  2052. money

  2053. sex

  2054. power

  2055. respect

  2056. it can

  2057. be such

  2058. a temptation

  2059. for us

  2060. forgive us

  2061. for this

  2062. thank you

  2063. that the

  2064. Christian faith

  2065. is not

  2066. simply

  2067. self-denial

  2068. but rather

  2069. in Jesus

  2070. we find

  2071. someone

  2072. who is

  2073. greater

  2074. than these

  2075. things

  2076. whose glory

  2077. surpasses

  2078. them all

  2079. whose joy

  2080. and satisfaction

  2081. that he

  2082. gives

  2083. exceeds

  2084. these things

  2085. and therefore

  2086. in joy

  2087. we can forsake

  2088. our finding

  2089. our identity

  2090. in other

  2091. things

  2092. we can give

  2093. up being

  2094. mastered

  2095. by money

  2096. or ruled

  2097. by lust

  2098. and joyfully

  2099. submit to the

  2100. lordship of

  2101. Jesus Christ

  2102. in whose name

  2103. we pray

  2104. amen
