  1. Welcome to the fourth in our big questions series.

  2. This is another really difficult one.

  3. Maybe many of you, maybe all of us have wrestled with this at some point.

  4. How can a good God judge anyone?

  5. How can a good God send anyone to hell?

  6. What I want us to do before thinking about that question

  7. is to hear one of the many places where Jesus teaches about heaven and hell.

  8. We're going to listen to a parable that we find in Luke chapter 16,

    Luke 16 chapter mention

  9. beginning at verse 19.

  10. So this is Jesus teaching.

  11. There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen

  12. and lived in luxury every day.

  13. At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus,

  14. covered with sores and longing to eat what fell from the rich man's table.

  15. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.

  16. The time came when the beggar died

  17. and the angels carried him to Abraham's side.

  18. The rich man also died and was buried.

  19. In Hades, where he was in torment,

  20. he looked up and saw Abraham far away with Lazarus by his side.

  21. So he called to him,

  22. Father Abraham, have pity on me

  23. and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water

  24. and cool my tongue

  25. because I am in agony in this fire.

  26. But Abraham replied,

  27. Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things

  28. while Lazarus received bad things.

  29. But now he is comforted here and you are in agony.

  30. And besides all this,

  31. between us and you a great chasm has been set in place

  32. so that those who want to go from here to you cannot,

  33. nor can anyone cross over from there to us.

  34. He answered,

  35. Then I beg you, Father,

  36. send Lazarus to my family,

  37. for I have five brothers.

  38. Let him warn them

  39. so that they will not also come to this place of torment.

  40. Abraham replied,

  41. They have Moses and the prophets.

  42. Let them listen to them.

  43. No, Father Abraham, he said,

  44. but if someone from the dead goes to them,

  45. they will repent.

  46. He said to them,

  47. If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets,

  48. they will not be convinced,

  49. even if someone rises from the dead.

  50. I think this is most likely the hardest question

  51. that we have to tackle.

  52. As Christians,

  53. one of those questions that we face,

  54. perhaps most often the challenges we face most often,

  55. some of the reasons why it's so difficult.

  56. First of all,

  57. there's an emotional response that we have to it, isn't there?

  58. It's unpleasant to think about,

  59. to talk about,

  60. judgment and hell.

  61. And that can very easily trump the question,

  62. Is it morally right?

  63. We go with our gut

  64. and it's hard to think beyond that.

  65. Another challenge that presents itself

  66. is views of tolerance

  67. that we have in society.

  68. So many people

  69. reckon that we are free

  70. to decide our own moral values.

  71. So that the idea of objective values

  72. coming from God

  73. are very unpopular in some places.

  74. The idea of a God

  75. who would judge

  76. sincerely held beliefs

  77. is confusing to people.

  78. The idea of a final judgment,

  79. a judgment day

  80. doesn't make sense to many.

  81. It's one of these places

  82. where Christianity challenges

  83. our culture

  84. here on the topic of tolerance.

  85. I think from a Christian point of view,

  86. we fear being labelled as judgmental,

  87. that we might seem to be proud,

  88. arrogant in some way.

  89. Nobody wants to be considered judgmental

  90. and so we can easily shy away

  91. and struggle to know

  92. how to deal with the question.

  93. We also have the obstacle

  94. of popular views of God

  95. and in particular,

  96. that view that says,

  97. well, I believe in a God of love,

  98. a God without justice,

  99. a God who is loving.

  100. And so there's no room there for justice,

  101. certainly no room for hell.

  102. We need to understand, of course,

  103. that that is a modern invention.

  104. There are no religious texts.

  105. There are no religious cultures

  106. at any point in history

  107. that simply had a God of love full stop.

  108. That is in itself a leap of faith,

  109. but nevertheless,

  110. it does make it difficult

  111. when we come to the question

  112. of hell and judgment.

  113. But what I hope we can do

  114. is take an honest look

  115. at a hard subject

  116. to think about what the Bible teaches

  117. and especially to think about

  118. what Jesus has to say.

  119. But let's begin with the question,

  120. how could a loving God judge anyone?

  121. I want to follow three distinct lines

  122. of thought at this stage.

  123. First, to recognise

  124. that we are free moral agents.

  125. At issue is the question,

  126. is God right?

  127. Does he have the right

  128. to hold us morally responsible?

  129. Now, somebody like Sam Harris

  130. would argue no.

  131. He believes in a thing

  132. called scientific determinism

  133. and would argue that

  134. we cannot control

  135. our neurological processes

  136. and therefore we cannot

  137. be held responsible

  138. for our behaviours.

  139. Here's a quote from Sam Harris.

  140. The idea that we,

  141. as conscious beings,

  142. are deeply responsible

  143. for the character

  144. of our mental lives

  145. and subsequent behaviour

  146. is simply impossible

  147. to map onto reality.

  148. Our question

  149. is, does that make

  150. the best sense of reality?

  151. if we say that

  152. nobody is accountable

  153. for their actions,

  154. it will, in a moment,

  155. destroy our justice system.

  156. It will also

  157. stop us from praising

  158. what we see as heroic

  159. or noble on the other hand.

  160. So we cannot condemn

  161. someone as guilty

  162. because it's just

  163. their brain processes

  164. and sort of automatic

  165. responses and behaviour,

  166. nor can we praise

  167. great acts of courage

  168. or of self-sacrifice.

  169. To go down that route

  170. that says we're not

  171. free moral agents

  172. is to strip away

  173. our moral fabric,

  174. to strip away

  175. a significant part

  176. of our dignity

  177. as human beings

  178. and instinctively

  179. in our understanding

  180. that there is

  181. right and wrong,

  182. there's beauty

  183. and ugliness,

  184. we are people

  185. who recognise

  186. justice,

  187. we recognise

  188. that people

  189. are making choices

  190. and so it makes

  191. best sense

  192. of the evidence

  193. to say that we are

  194. free moral agents.

  195. The second

  196. line of thought

  197. at this stage

  198. is to recognise,

  199. although it seems

  200. initially

  201. a paradox

  202. that love

  203. and justice

  204. can coexist.

  205. For many

  206. the idea

  207. of a God

  208. who has

  209. wrath

  210. or anger

  211. against sin

  212. seems

  213. sub-God,

  214. it's beneath

  215. God.

  216. the question

  217. is posed,

  218. well can't we

  219. just remove

  220. judgement

  221. to have

  222. only

  223. love?

  224. But others

  225. have noticed

  226. a problem.

  227. The opposite

  228. of

  229. love

  230. is apathy

  231. or indifference.

  232. So a God

  233. who didn't

  234. care

  235. about

  236. evil

  237. a God

  238. who was

  239. not

  240. concerned

  241. with

  242. injustice

  243. would not

  244. be more

  245. loving,

  246. rather

  247. it would

  248. be a God

  249. not worthy

  250. of our

  251. worship.

  252. To make

  253. things personal

  254. for a moment,

  255. suppose you

  256. were to see

  257. a friend

  258. or a family

  259. member

  260. be mocked

  261. or abused.

  262. what feelings

  263. would we

  264. have?

  265. Well surely

  266. there would

  267. be a sense

  268. of anger

  269. at wrongdoing,

  270. there would

  271. be a desire

  272. for justice.

  273. And the

  274. more love

  275. that we

  276. have for

  277. a person,

  278. the greater

  279. that sense

  280. of justice

  281. would be.

  282. Think about

  283. how we

  284. respond

  285. to the

  286. horrible

  287. things we

  288. hear about

  289. in the

  290. news,

  291. whether

  292. that's

  293. trafficking

  294. or dictators

  295. or racism.

  296. We respond

  297. as moral

  298. agents.

  299. We feel

  300. that certain

  301. things are

  302. wrong and

  303. the more

  304. we love,

  305. the more

  306. we feel

  307. that.

  308. Now bearing

  309. in mind,

  310. as the

  311. Bible tells

  312. us,

  313. people are

  314. God's

  315. image

  316. bearers.

  317. If we

  318. feel

  319. and recognise

  320. and respond

  321. with a

  322. desire for

  323. justice,

  324. we cannot

  325. deny that

  326. to God.

  327. When he

  328. sees evil

  329. and injustice,

  330. we cannot

  331. expect him

  332. to just

  333. turn a

  334. blind eye

  335. to them.

  336. He is too

  337. loving for

  338. them.

  339. We need

  340. to recognise

  341. that our

  342. feelings

  343. of anger

  344. and injustice

  345. are just a

  346. drop in the

  347. ocean

  348. compared

  349. to God's.

  350. God is

  351. righteously

  352. angry

  353. against the

  354. horror of

  355. sin that

  356. is destroying

  357. and ripping

  358. apart the

  359. beauty and

  360. the peace

  361. of his

  362. creation.

  363. Before we

  364. move on,

  365. a few years

  366. ago I came

  367. across the

  368. writings of

  369. Miroslav

  370. Wolf.

  371. He is

  372. a theologian

  373. who grew

  374. up and

  375. lived through

  376. the Balkan

  377. wars of

  378. the 90s.

  379. And for

  380. Wolf,

  381. he understood

  382. that only

  383. a genuine

  384. belief in

  385. the final

  386. judgment of

  387. God was

  388. able to

  389. stop the

  390. cycle of

  391. killing and

  392. revenge.

  393. That it

  394. leaving

  395. vengeance in

  396. God's

  397. hands

  398. allowed

  399. people the

  400. freedom to

  401. forgive and

  402. to move

  403. on.

  404. So love

  405. and justice

  406. can co-exist.

  407. And the

  408. third line

  409. of thinking

  410. I want us

  411. to pursue

  412. for a couple

  413. of minutes

  414. is that

  415. the punishment

  416. that's described

  417. in the

  418. Bible does

  419. fit the

  420. crime.

  421. one

  422. significant

  423. struggle that

  424. we have

  425. in the

  426. question of

  427. how could

  428. God judge

  429. anyone

  430. is that

  431. we have

  432. made sin

  433. a small

  434. thing.

  435. It seems

  436. like no

  437. big deal.

  438. And coupled

  439. to that we

  440. have lost

  441. sight of

  442. the

  443. perfect

  444. holiness of

  445. God.

  446. That he

  447. is morally

  448. perfect,

  449. his glory

  450. is far

  451. above

  452. us.

  453. And when

  454. we lose

  455. sight of

  456. the seriousness

  457. of sin

  458. and the

  459. holiness of

  460. God,

  461. we imagine

  462. God can

  463. simply sweep

  464. sin under

  465. the rug.

  466. He can

  467. let everyone

  468. into

  469. heaven.

  470. We can

  471. follow the

  472. logic,

  473. well,

  474. God forgives

  475. everyone,

  476. that's his

  477. job.

  478. God is

  479. unchanging

  480. in his

  481. character.

  482. And the

  483. ugliness of

  484. sin,

  485. if God

  486. was simply

  487. to ignore

  488. it and

  489. sweep it

  490. under the

  491. rug,

  492. it would

  493. mean God

  494. being

  495. untrue to

  496. himself.

  497. God is

  498. unchanging

  499. in his

  500. character.

  501. He cannot

  502. act in

  503. ways that

  504. are unjust

  505. or unholy.

  506. And so

  507. for our

  508. whole

  509. understanding

  510. of this

  511. question,

  512. we need

  513. to recover

  514. the view

  515. that God

  516. is perfectly

  517. holy.

  518. And we

  519. need to

  520. reckon

  521. with sin

  522. being directed

  523. against this

  524. holy God.

  525. And it's no

  526. small thing,

  527. rather, as

  528. R.C.

  529. Sproul put it,

  530. it's an act

  531. of cosmic

  532. treason.

  533. Our sin

  534. is an

  535. infinite

  536. offence

  537. against the

  538. infinitely

  539. holy and

  540. glorious

  541. God,

  542. and as

  543. such,

  544. it deserves

  545. infinite

  546. punishment.

  547. A picture

  548. to help

  549. us.

  550. If you

  551. were to

  552. go behind

  553. my back

  554. and to

  555. plot

  556. against me

  557. for some

  558. reason,

  559. I would

  560. find that

  561. sad,

  562. obviously,

  563. but at the

  564. end of the

  565. day, it

  566. would be

  567. no

  568. big

  569. deal.

  570. But

  571. if we

  572. do the

  573. same to

  574. the

  575. Queen,

  576. well, that

  577. could become

  578. an act

  579. of treason.

  580. And that

  581. could land

  582. you in the

  583. Tower of

  584. London.

  585. We need

  586. to think

  587. about who

  588. we're dealing

  589. with, who

  590. we sin

  591. against.

  592. So where

  593. have we

  594. got to

  595. so far?

  596. We have

  597. considered that

  598. we are morally

  599. responsible for

  600. our actions

  601. and our

  602. decisions,

  603. and that

  604. includes

  605. how we

  606. respond to

  607. God and

  608. especially how

  609. we respond to

  610. Jesus as

  611. Saviour.

  612. We show

  613. in everyday

  614. life that

  615. to love

  616. is to

  617. care about

  618. justice.

  619. And we've

  620. seen that God

  621. is no different.

  622. In fact, God

  623. is the perfect

  624. example of

  625. that.

  626. And we've

  627. also considered

  628. that we're

  629. dealing with

  630. an absolutely

  631. holy and

  632. perfect God,

  633. also rejecting

  634. and rebelling

  635. against him

  636. is very

  637. serious.

  638. And those

  639. three realities,

  640. they underpin

  641. the teaching

  642. of the Bible,

  643. the teaching

  644. of Jesus

  645. on judgment,

  646. on heaven

  647. and hell.

  648. So let's

  649. turn there

  650. next.

  651. And what I

  652. want us to

  653. do is to

  654. think about

  655. heaven and

  656. hell in

  657. terms of

  658. relationship

  659. to Jesus.

  660. Now typically,

  661. heaven and

  662. hell, we

  663. think about

  664. them as

  665. places,

  666. and maybe

  667. those places,

  668. if we go to

  669. one or the

  670. other, it

  671. depends on

  672. our actions,

  673. but it's

  674. better, I

  675. think more

  676. helpful for

  677. us, to

  678. see that

  679. those places

  680. are tied up

  681. to our

  682. relationship

  683. to Jesus,

  684. the response

  685. we make

  686. to him.

  687. And as we

  688. begin to

  689. think about

  690. the subject,

  691. let's just

  692. remember Jesus

  693. regarded by

  694. many Christians

  695. and non-Christians

  696. as the most

  697. loving person

  698. who ever

  699. lived.

  700. This is the

  701. Jesus who

  702. wept over

  703. the city

  704. of Jerusalem

  705. knowing that

  706. they had

  707. chosen to

  708. reject him.

  709. This is the

  710. Jesus who

  711. prayed,

  712. Father,

  713. forgive them

  714. of his

  715. enemies who

  716. are nailing

  717. him to a

  718. cross.

  719. It's this

  720. Jesus who

  721. taught more

  722. about heaven

  723. and hell

  724. and the

  725. judgment of

  726. God than

  727. anybody else

  728. in the

  729. whole Bible.

  730. And so we

  731. need to

  732. recognise that

  733. its foundation

  734. as truth

  735. is not

  736. hateful.

  737. Rather,

  738. in the

  739. hands of

  740. Jesus,

  741. in the

  742. teaching of

  743. Jesus,

  744. there is a

  745. loving invitation

  746. to receive

  747. him and

  748. receive the

  749. joy of

  750. heaven and

  751. there is a

  752. loving warning

  753. to receive

  754. Jesus and

  755. avoid the

  756. danger and

  757. the punishment

  758. of hell.

  759. In the

  760. teaching of

  761. Jesus,

  762. in his

  763. parables,

  764. he used

  765. lots of

  766. different

  767. pictures,

  768. heaven is

  769. pictured as

  770. homecoming,

  771. it's pictured

  772. as wedding,

  773. it's pictured

  774. as a

  775. great feast.

  776. All of

  777. those pictures

  778. speaking to

  779. us of joy

  780. and life

  781. and celebration

  782. and all

  783. about

  784. relationship.

  785. And Jesus

  786. emphasised

  787. relationship to

  788. himself and

  789. to God as

  790. Father.

  791. And in

  792. those same

  793. parables and

  794. teachings,

  795. hell is the

  796. opposite,

  797. hell is the

  798. shut door,

  799. hell is the

  800. outer darkness,

  801. hell is the

  802. agony and

  803. the wailing.

  804. And the

  805. point that I

  806. want us to

  807. really to take

  808. away and to

  809. consider is

  810. what we're not

  811. doing is

  812. choosing

  813. heaven or

  814. hell

  815. fundamentally.

  816. what we're

  817. choosing today,

  818. what you and

  819. I are choosing

  820. today is

  821. am I

  822. accepting

  823. or rejecting

  824. Jesus?

  825. He offers me

  826. forgiveness,

  827. he offers me

  828. life,

  829. he offers me

  830. heaven,

  831. he offers to

  832. save me from

  833. hell,

  834. do I accept

  835. or do I

  836. reject him?

  837. And I want

  838. to see this in

  839. the parable

  840. that we read

  841. at the beginning,

  842. Luke chapter

    Luke 16 chapter mention

  843. 16,

  844. the story of

  845. the rich man

  846. and Lazarus

  847. that Jesus

  848. told.

  849. We see

  850. two extremes

  851. in their

  852. life as

  853. Jesus paints

  854. a picture

  855. for us.

  856. This rich man

  857. lives in

  858. extreme luxury

  859. whereas Lazarus

  860. lives in

  861. extreme poverty

  862. just outside

  863. his gate

  864. with dogs

  865. licking his

  866. sores and

  867. desperate to

  868. get even the

  869. crumbs from

  870. the rich man's

  871. table.

  872. But then the

  873. story moves

  874. on and we

  875. see two

  876. extremes

  877. in eternity.

  878. They both

  879. die and

  880. Lazarus

  881. finds himself

  882. in Abraham's

  883. bosom,

  884. a place of

  885. comfort and

  886. security.

  887. Abraham,

  888. the father of

  889. faith,

  890. Abraham who

  891. received covenant

  892. promises from

  893. God.

  894. Here is a

  895. picture of

  896. Lazarus

  897. enjoying

  898. blessing

  899. in God's

  900. place

  901. among God's

  902. people,

  903. knowing peace

  904. with God

  905. and joy

  906. of life

  907. made perfect

  908. but the

  909. rich man,

  910. the contrast

  911. is stark.

  912. We are told

  913. he is in

  914. torment.

  915. He says

  916. that he is

  917. in agony.

  918. We are told

  919. that he is

  920. in the

  921. fire.

  922. Now it's

  923. important to

  924. recognise

  925. that some

  926. of the

  927. imagery of

  928. hell is

  929. just that.

  930. It's a

  931. picture fire

  932. here.

  933. Here is a

  934. picture but

  935. we need to

  936. understand it's

  937. a picture that

  938. speaks to

  939. a certain

  940. reality.

  941. It represents

  942. the horror

  943. of what it

  944. means to

  945. receive

  946. punishment

  947. and to

  948. face

  949. eternal

  950. separation.

  951. In our

  952. story,

  953. reality sets

  954. in and

  955. we recognise

  956. that hell

  957. is real,

  958. hell is

  959. eternal,

  960. and there

  961. is this

  962. great

  963. chasm.

  964. So there

  965. is a

  966. point of

  967. no return,

  968. there is

  969. no crossing.

  970. And out

  971. of this

  972. misery and

  973. torment,

  974. the rich

  975. man responds

  976. by wanting

  977. to sound a

  978. warning to

  979. his family.

  980. and so the

  981. rich man asks

  982. Abraham in

  983. the parable

  984. to send

  985. Lazarus to

  986. his brothers

  987. and the

  988. response is

  989. they have

  990. the word

  991. of God

  992. that that

  993. should be

  994. enough for

  995. them.

  996. They have

  997. Moses and

  998. the prophets.

  999. the rich

  1000. man comes

  1001. back and

  1002. says,

  1003. no,

  1004. if somebody

  1005. comes and

  1006. appears from

  1007. the dead,

  1008. then they'll

  1009. repent,

  1010. then they'll

  1011. believe,

  1012. and the

  1013. climax of

  1014. the story,

  1015. if they do

  1016. not listen to

  1017. Moses and

  1018. the prophets,

  1019. if they don't

  1020. listen to the

  1021. word of God,

  1022. they will not

  1023. be convinced

  1024. even if

  1025. someone rises

  1026. from the

  1027. dead.

  1028. in Jesus

  1029. teaching.

  1030. There are

  1031. people who

  1032. have the

  1033. Bible and

  1034. don't listen

  1035. to its

  1036. warnings and

  1037. invitations.

  1038. There's some

  1039. who won't

  1040. believe even

  1041. in the face

  1042. of resurrection.

  1043. What's Jesus

  1044. driving at

  1045. here?

  1046. Well, in

  1047. one sense,

  1048. here is another

  1049. way of Jesus

  1050. to make the

  1051. point that the

  1052. whole Bible

  1053. is about

  1054. him,

  1055. about the

  1056. fact that

  1057. God in

  1058. his grace

  1059. has

  1060. responded to

  1061. human sin

  1062. and misery

  1063. by promising

  1064. a saviour,

  1065. that saviour

  1066. who is God's

  1067. own son,

  1068. who comes

  1069. out of sheer

  1070. mercy and

  1071. grace to be

  1072. Messiah,

  1073. saviour,

  1074. to become

  1075. the sacrifice

  1076. for sin

  1077. at the cross

  1078. and the one

  1079. who calls

  1080. us to

  1081. faith in

  1082. him and

  1083. to repentance,

  1084. to turning

  1085. away from

  1086. sin.

  1087. It also

  1088. is pointing

  1089. forward to

  1090. the reality

  1091. that Jesus

  1092. would conquer

  1093. hell by

  1094. his

  1095. resurrection,

  1096. that faith

  1097. in Jesus

  1098. is the

  1099. only way

  1100. to enjoy

  1101. heaven and

  1102. not hell,

  1103. but sadly,

  1104. some people

  1105. won't believe

  1106. even a

  1107. risen saviour.

  1108. The Bible

  1109. teaches that

  1110. we are made

  1111. for friendship

  1112. with God

  1113. and sin is

  1114. what separates

  1115. and what

  1116. severs that

  1117. relationship.

  1118. To lose

  1119. God's

  1120. presence

  1121. is tragedy.

  1122. To lose

  1123. God's

  1124. presence

  1125. eternally

  1126. is hell.

  1127. So Jesus,

  1128. in his life,

  1129. in his teaching,

  1130. he issues a

  1131. loving invitation,

  1132. an offer that

  1133. doesn't last

  1134. forever,

  1135. and he

  1136. speaks of

  1137. the reality

  1138. of hell

  1139. to give

  1140. urgency

  1141. to the

  1142. decision

  1143. that we

  1144. all have

  1145. to make.

  1146. Now,

  1147. of course,

  1148. many people

  1149. in Jesus'

  1150. day,

  1151. they rejected

  1152. him,

  1153. they chose

  1154. another path,

  1155. many people

  1156. today.

  1157. Well,

  1158. I have

  1159. better offers

  1160. on the

  1161. table than

  1162. the one

  1163. to follow

  1164. Jesus.

  1165. I have

  1166. more

  1167. freedom

  1168. to enjoy

  1169. than what

  1170. Jesus offers

  1171. and next

  1172. week we'll

  1173. think about

  1174. the whole

  1175. question of

  1176. freedom.

  1177. I have

  1178. time on

  1179. my side,

  1180. maybe at

  1181. some other

  1182. point I'll

  1183. consider Jesus,

  1184. but we need

  1185. to recognise

  1186. what we do

  1187. with his

  1188. invitation

  1189. determines

  1190. our eternal

  1191. destiny.

  1192. So moving

  1193. from heaven

  1194. and hell

  1195. and our

  1196. relationship

  1197. to Jesus,

  1198. I want us

  1199. lastly to

  1200. think about

  1201. heaven and

  1202. hell and

  1203. what it says

  1204. about the

  1205. love of

  1206. Jesus.

  1207. God

  1208. and perhaps

  1209. that in

  1210. itself seems

  1211. surprising to

  1212. put together.

  1213. I want to

  1214. turn our

  1215. usual question

  1216. on its

  1217. head so

  1218. that instead

  1219. of asking

  1220. how could a

  1221. good and

  1222. loving God

  1223. send anyone

  1224. to hell,

  1225. I want to

  1226. ask how

  1227. could a

  1228. good and

  1229. loving and

  1230. just God

  1231. allow anyone

  1232. into heaven?

  1233. Take just a

  1234. moment of

  1235. honest reflection

  1236. and you know

  1237. as well as I

  1238. do that we

  1239. have guilty

  1240. secrets,

  1241. that we

  1242. hide things

  1243. from others.

  1244. we're very

  1245. careful in

  1246. the image

  1247. that we

  1248. project.

  1249. We sometimes

  1250. in our

  1251. church use

  1252. the

  1253. Christianity

  1254. Explored

  1255. course to

  1256. help people

  1257. to investigate

  1258. the Christian

  1259. faith and it

  1260. has a

  1261. powerful

  1262. illustration

  1263. there where

  1264. Rico Teiss,

  1265. the presenter,

  1266. asked the

  1267. question if

  1268. there was a

  1269. big screen

  1270. showing of

  1271. all the

  1272. thoughts

  1273. running through

  1274. our heads

  1275. that was

  1276. available for

  1277. the world

  1278. to see.

  1279. How would

  1280. we feel

  1281. about that?

  1282. It sounds

  1283. awful doesn't

  1284. it?

  1285. We would

  1286. feel so

  1287. exposed and

  1288. ashamed.

  1289. One of the

  1290. ways the

  1291. Bible functions

  1292. is it

  1293. functions as

  1294. a search

  1295. light.

  1296. The light

  1297. of its

  1298. perfection

  1299. exposes our

  1300. failures.

  1301. It lays

  1302. bare the

  1303. darkness of

  1304. our thoughts

  1305. and words

  1306. and actions

  1307. and motives

  1308. when we

  1309. really listen

  1310. to it but

  1311. yet remarkably

  1312. that search

  1313. light isn't

  1314. there to

  1315. condemn us

  1316. as criminals

  1317. it's intended

  1318. to find us

  1319. so that we

  1320. might be

  1321. brought home

  1322. that against

  1323. the dark

  1324. backdrop

  1325. of our

  1326. sin

  1327. and the

  1328. consequence

  1329. of that

  1330. which is

  1331. separation

  1332. from God

  1333. and hell

  1334. the light

  1335. of Jesus

  1336. the love

  1337. of Jesus

  1338. shines

  1339. to bring

  1340. hope

  1341. and grace

  1342. and to

  1343. see this

  1344. we need to

  1345. see what

  1346. the cross

  1347. of Jesus

  1348. is all

  1349. about.

  1350. So the

  1351. night before

  1352. Jesus died

  1353. he was in

  1354. the garden

  1355. of Gethsemane

  1356. and he

  1357. prayed

  1358. Father

  1359. if it is

  1360. possible

  1361. take this

  1362. cup

  1363. from me

  1364. yet not

  1365. my will

  1366. but yours

  1367. be done.

  1368. Now what

  1369. is this

  1370. cup

  1371. that he

  1372. was asking

  1373. to be

  1374. removed

  1375. if possible?

  1376. Well we

  1377. discover that

  1378. image in the

  1379. Old Testament

  1380. a picture of

  1381. God's holy

  1382. anger against

  1383. sin being

  1384. poured out

  1385. for his

  1386. enemies to

  1387. drink.

  1388. That anger

  1389. of God

  1390. that would

  1391. come against

  1392. nations for

  1393. idolatry

  1394. for child

  1395. sacrifice

  1396. for exploiting

  1397. the poor

  1398. for rejection

  1399. of him

  1400. and his

  1401. word

  1402. and when

  1403. we look

  1404. at the

  1405. cross

  1406. we need

  1407. to see

  1408. Jesus

  1409. drinking

  1410. down

  1411. God's

  1412. righteous

  1413. anger

  1414. at sin

  1415. my sin

  1416. to see

  1417. that Jesus

  1418. in love

  1419. will face

  1420. hell

  1421. will cry

  1422. my God

  1423. my God

  1424. why have

  1425. you forsaken

  1426. me to

  1427. give me

  1428. heaven.

  1429. Now the

  1430. question then

  1431. arises well

  1432. how does this

  1433. not make

  1434. God and

  1435. the cross

  1436. unjust

  1437. if Jesus

  1438. is righteous

  1439. and innocent

  1440. as we believe

  1441. then how can

  1442. this be just

  1443. and we need

  1444. to see

  1445. that this

  1446. isn't

  1447. the father

  1448. punishing

  1449. the son

  1450. and the son

  1451. is passive

  1452. and receiving

  1453. the anger

  1454. of an

  1455. angry father

  1456. Jesus

  1457. we need to

  1458. understand

  1459. is God

  1460. he is not

  1461. a passive

  1462. victim

  1463. he is both

  1464. the judge

  1465. and the

  1466. condemned

  1467. on the cross

  1468. he gives

  1469. his life

  1470. as a sacrifice

  1471. but on the

  1472. last day

  1473. Jesus will

  1474. return as

  1475. judge

  1476. and so

  1477. the wrath

  1478. of God

  1479. against sin

  1480. is

  1481. the wrath

  1482. of Jesus

  1483. and there is

  1484. mystery there

  1485. but we affirm

  1486. it to be true

  1487. and we also

  1488. need to see

  1489. that Jesus

  1490. cannot be

  1491. separated

  1492. from his

  1493. people

  1494. he is the

  1495. head

  1496. and his

  1497. people

  1498. the church

  1499. is the

  1500. body

  1501. so he

  1502. represents

  1503. his people

  1504. and we are

  1505. united

  1506. to him

  1507. he becomes

  1508. one of us

  1509. that he might

  1510. bear the

  1511. punishment

  1512. and face

  1513. hell

  1514. for us

  1515. and united

  1516. with him

  1517. as it goes

  1518. for Jesus

  1519. so it

  1520. goes

  1521. for us

  1522. he dies

  1523. to sin

  1524. so that we

  1525. can die

  1526. to sin

  1527. and live

  1528. a righteous

  1529. life

  1530. with God

  1531. and for

  1532. God

  1533. so when we

  1534. look at the

  1535. cross we see

  1536. both a

  1537. demonstration

  1538. of God's

  1539. righteous

  1540. anger

  1541. at sin

  1542. as Jesus

  1543. the sin

  1544. bearer

  1545. faces it

  1546. but we

  1547. also see

  1548. the cross

  1549. as the

  1550. loving

  1551. response of

  1552. God

  1553. to rescue

  1554. sinners

  1555. and invite

  1556. us

  1557. to heaven

  1558. which is

  1559. the relationship

  1560. with God

  1561. and the love

  1562. that that

  1563. brings

  1564. so the choice

  1565. we all face

  1566. as we come

  1567. to a close

  1568. is this

  1569. knowing that

  1570. we have

  1571. all sins

  1572. that we have

  1573. failed to love

  1574. God and to

  1575. love others

  1576. perfectly

  1577. knowing that

  1578. the just

  1579. punishment

  1580. for that

  1581. is

  1582. separation

  1583. from God

  1584. and hell

  1585. for all

  1586. eternity

  1587. the choice

  1588. is simple

  1589. will I face

  1590. hell

  1591. by myself

  1592. or will I

  1593. trust Jesus

  1594. and his

  1595. love

  1596. and will I

  1597. hide myself

  1598. in him

  1599. the scandal

  1600. at the heart

  1601. of Christianity

  1602. is that

  1603. anyone who

  1604. believes

  1605. will be

  1606. saved

  1607. because of

  1608. God's

  1609. free grace

  1610. to us

  1611. in Jesus

  1612. and Jesus

  1613. loving

  1614. invitation

  1615. is open

  1616. to

  1617. all

  1618. so

  1619. philosopher

  1620. JP

  1621. Moreland

  1622. is right

  1623. when he

  1624. says

  1625. I believe

  1626. that hell

  1627. is morally

  1628. justifiable

  1629. but I don't

  1630. feel comfortable

  1631. about it

  1632. because it's

  1633. sad

  1634. the proper

  1635. thing to

  1636. do

  1637. is admit

  1638. that hell

  1639. is real

  1640. and allow

  1641. our feelings

  1642. of discomfort

  1643. to motivate

  1644. us to

  1645. action

  1646. whether that's

  1647. turning to

  1648. Jesus as

  1649. saviour

  1650. or sharing

  1651. the good

  1652. news of

  1653. Jesus with

  1654. urgency

  1655. to others

  1656. let's pray

  1657. briefly

  1658. Lord God

  1659. as we have

  1660. considered

  1661. one of the

  1662. hardest

  1663. topics

  1664. for us

  1665. to think

  1666. about

  1667. emotionally

  1668. we do

  1669. thank you

  1670. that we

  1671. can look

  1672. through the

  1673. Bible

  1674. and we

  1675. can

  1676. listen to

  1677. the teaching

  1678. of Jesus

  1679. thank you

  1680. that we see

  1681. in Jesus

  1682. someone who

  1683. is loving

  1684. and not

  1685. hateful

  1686. we see

  1687. in Jesus

  1688. someone who

  1689. would give

  1690. his own

  1691. life

  1692. who would

  1693. face

  1694. hell

  1695. so that

  1696. all who

  1697. would trust

  1698. in him

  1699. by faith

  1700. need not

  1701. face

  1702. judgment

  1703. we pray

  1704. that you

  1705. would help

  1706. us to

  1707. honestly

  1708. wrestle

  1709. with

  1710. the feelings

  1711. that we

  1712. have

  1713. but also

  1714. to think

  1715. about

  1716. what the

  1717. Bible

  1718. teaches

  1719. that you

  1720. would give

  1721. us that

  1722. sense of

  1723. urgency

  1724. that you

  1725. would help

  1726. us to see

  1727. our eternal

  1728. destiny

  1729. hinges on

  1730. how we

  1731. respond

  1732. to the

  1733. loving

  1734. invitation

  1735. and the

  1736. loving

  1737. warning

  1738. of Jesus

  1739. we

  1740. ask

  1741. that you

  1742. would help

  1743. us

  1744. and guide

  1745. us

  1746. amen

  1747. to

  1748. you
