  1. Okay, good morning everyone.

  2. Good morning.

  3. If you don't know me, my name is Chris.

  4. I'm the teaching pastor here at Watermark.

  5. It's great to see so many of you coming out.

  6. Who's coming for the walk?

  7. Great.

  8. If you haven't put your hand up,

  9. somebody will press gang you into coming on the walk with us.

  10. Again, kids are going to be staying in this morning,

  11. so they've got something to color in with.

  12. If your kids are kind of running around going crazy, it's fine.

  13. Feel free to kind of take them around to the back.

  14. We're family, so it's cool.

  15. Okay.

  16. If you've got a bulletin with you,

  17. I would like you to take out your bulletin.

  18. If you don't have a bulletin,

  19. has someone not got a bulletin?

  20. Could somebody go and grab some for us so that everyone can get one?

  21. If you look on your bulletin,

  22. you will see inside there is a little rectangle with a cross and a dot there.

  23. Can everyone see that?

  24. Yes?

  25. Okay.

  26. What I would like you to do is,

  27. I would like you to close your right eye.

  28. Okay?

  29. And I'd like you to look at the cross.

  30. Okay?

  31. Still keep the dot in focus,

  32. but keep your eye on the cross.

  33. And I'd like you to move the sheet of paper as close to you as you can

  34. until you see the dot disappear.

  35. Has everyone found it?

  36. Okay.

  37. Some of you, it's like not disappearing.

  38. Just, okay.

  39. Close your right eye.

  40. Look with your left eye.

  41. Okay?

  42. Bring it closer.

  43. Bring it further away until you find that.

  44. Some of you are going,

  45. I don't know what's going on here.

  46. Who hasn't managed to work it out?

  47. Okay.

  48. A few of you haven't managed to work it out.

  49. Okay.

  50. We'll spend a special session with you afterwards in how to do it.

  51. What you should realize is that every single one of us actually has a blind spot.

  52. Where if you focus in a certain way at a certain point,

  53. there are things which are actually there,

  54. which at some point,

  55. physically your eye actually doesn't see them.

  56. Okay?

  57. We all have blind spots.

  58. Not just physical blind spots,

  59. but blind spots in our lives.

  60. And I know some of you are like,

  61. the rest of the sermon,

  62. you're not going to hear this

  63. because you're just kind of going in and out.

  64. I know, it's terrible to start like that.

  65. Control yourselves.

  66. Okay.

  67. We all have blind spots in our lives.

  68. We all have things which are there,

  69. which we don't always see

  70. because we are focusing on certain things so deeply

  71. that actually we miss some of the reality of what's going on around us.

  72. And one of those great blind spots in our lives

  73. is the people around us.

  74. People in need around us.

  75. And you know,

  76. Hong Kong is such a crazy place

  77. because it really just draws your focus

  78. with all the pressure that we're under in this city

  79. so that if you're a student,

  80. where does your focus get drawn?

  81. It's all on your exams coming up,

  82. all on your studies.

  83. If you are a worker,

  84. where does your focus get drawn?

  85. It gets drawn on those deadlines,

  86. those projects,

  87. those annoying colleagues,

  88. the desire for career promotion.

  89. If you're a parent,

  90. where does your focus get drawn?

  91. It gets drawn all onto the demands of parenting,

  92. health, education,

  93. all these things which are necessary

  94. and realities in our lives.

  95. But the thing is,

  96. often what Hong Kong does for us

  97. is it pressures us into seeing

  98. the things and focusing more on the problems we have in life

  99. rather than the blessings that we have in life.

  100. We focus more on what we don't have

  101. than on what we do have.

  102. And all the resources and the things

  103. that God has given us

  104. that are available to us

  105. that he uses

  106. so that we might bless other people.

  107. You see,

  108. I was talking to a guy a while ago

  109. and he says to me,

  110. initially he was looking for a job

  111. and he couldn't find a job

  112. and then finally he found this job

  113. and I came to him and I said,

  114. congratulations,

  115. it's amazing.

  116. And he said,

  117. yeah,

  118. but I've only got 10 days holiday.

  119. I went to somebody else

  120. and I said,

  121. hey,

  122. it's bonus time coming up.

  123. And this guy,

  124. he got a great bonus from his work

  125. and he was really happy

  126. and then he looked over to his colleague

  127. who got a bigger bonus than him

  128. and I met up with him

  129. and he was depressed

  130. because he didn't have as much

  131. as the other person had.

  132. You see,

  133. our minds are often focused

  134. on what we don't have

  135. more than the blessings of what we do have.

  136. And when we're like that in Hong Kong,

  137. what happens is

  138. we tend to focus more on ourselves

  139. and we don't see

  140. the people around us

  141. who we could bless

  142. with what he has given us.

  143. You know,

  144. 120 years ago,

  145. there was a lady called Martha Polster.

  146. She was a German Christian missionary.

  147. She came to Hong Kong

  148. and she saw

  149. four visually impaired girls

  150. that nobody else saw,

  151. that everybody else ignored

  152. because they were wrapped up

  153. in their problems

  154. and their issues.

  155. But she saw them.

  156. And she did what love always does.

  157. Love sees

  158. and then love reaches out.

  159. Love sees

  160. and love reaches out.

  161. And she knows

  162. she started this school

  163. 120 years ago.

  164. Ebenezer School.

  165. And since then,

  166. hundreds and hundreds

  167. and hundreds

  168. of children

  169. and adults

  170. have been transformed

  171. through this school

  172. bringing hope,

  173. bringing dignity,

  174. bringing life

  175. into them.

  176. And the reason

  177. that her eyes

  178. were open

  179. to this

  180. was because

  181. she saw

  182. what this Advent season

  183. is all about.

  184. She saw

  185. that Advent

  186. was about

  187. the coming

  188. of Jesus Christ,

  189. the coming

  190. of hope,

  191. the coming

  192. of the one

  193. who in this passage

  194. we read

  195. said this,

  196. the spirit

  197. of the sovereign Lord

  198. of the Lord

  199. is upon me

  200. and he's anointed me

  201. to proclaim

  202. good news

  203. to the poor,

  204. to the prisoners,

  205. to the blind,

  206. to the oppressed.

  207. Do you notice

  208. he didn't say

  209. I've come

  210. to proclaim

  211. good news

  212. to those

  213. that I kind of

  214. feel comfortable with.

  215. he didn't say

  216. I've come

  217. to proclaim

  218. good news

  219. to those

  220. who are kind

  221. of like me

  222. because he wouldn't

  223. have had many people

  224. then to proclaim to.

  225. He didn't say

  226. I've come

  227. to proclaim

  228. good news

  229. to those

  230. who haven't

  231. made any

  232. poor choices

  233. in their life.

  234. He said

  235. I've come

  236. to proclaim

  237. good news

  238. to the poor,

  239. to the prisoner,

  240. to the blind,

  241. to the oppressed,

  242. to the people

  243. on the margins

  244. of society

  245. that everyone

  246. else doesn't

  247. see.

  248. And we know

  249. he didn't just

  250. come,

  251. he was sent

  252. because that

  253. was his mission

  254. in a world

  255. which is broken

  256. and filled

  257. with injustice

  258. and pain.

  259. But we know

  260. that we

  261. are the recipients

  262. of that

  263. because poverty

  264. is spiritual,

  265. economic,

  266. relational,

  267. emotional,

  268. it covers

  269. all of that.

  270. We are all

  271. blind in many

  272. ways

  273. because we're

  274. blind to God.

  275. We are blind

  276. and we are

  277. poor in love

  278. towards other

  279. people and

  280. towards God.

  281. We are prisoners

  282. to our own

  283. ambitions and

  284. our own desires

  285. and yet Jesus

  286. came down

  287. to reach out

  288. to us

  289. because he saw

  290. us and he

  291. reached out

  292. because love

  293. sees and love

  294. reaches out.

  295. one of the

  296. great desires

  297. of our hearts

  298. is that someone

  299. would take an

  300. interest in us,

  301. that someone

  302. would see us

  303. in spite of

  304. what we're like

  305. and they would

  306. show grace to

  307. us.

  308. That is what

  309. Jesus has done

  310. for each one

  311. of us if we

  312. are believers

  313. and trust in

  314. him.

  315. But he also

  316. says,

  317. Jesus says,

  318. as I was

  319. sent so I

  320. send you.

  321. I send you

  322. to go.

  323. in this

  324. city where

  325. we have,

  326. we mentioned

  327. one in five

  328. people live

  329. below the

  330. poverty line.

  331. Every time

  332. you go to

  333. work you

  334. are walking

  335. past people

  336. who are

  337. hopeless,

  338. suffering and

  339. in despair.

  340. And God

  341. wants to

  342. open our

  343. eyes to see

  344. who is it

  345. that he's

  346. calling us

  347. to.

  348. We are not

  349. the savior

  350. of the world,

  351. Jesus is,

  352. but he wants

  353. to open our

  354. eyes to see

  355. the people

  356. he has put

  357. around us

  358. and to

  359. reach out

  360. to them.

  361. I read

  362. this story,

  363. a biography,

  364. it's a

  365. biography called

  366. Guailo,

  367. about an

  368. English boy

  369. who grew

  370. up in

  371. Hong Kong

  372. called

  373. Martin.

  374. And one

  375. day his

  376. mom found

  377. out that

  378. there was a

  379. leper colony

  380. in Hong Kong.

  381. Did you

  382. know there

  383. used to be

  384. a leper

  385. colony in

  386. Hong Kong?

  387. Did you

  388. know Hayling

  389. Tao,

  390. near Land

  391. Tao,

  392. used to

  393. have a

  394. leper

  395. colony

  396. until the

  397. 1970s,

  398. where the

  399. lepers were

  400. basically,

  401. they were

  402. pushed onto

  403. this island

  404. because nobody

  405. wanted to be

  406. around them

  407. because they

  408. could be

  409. contagious,

  410. it could be,

  411. it was just

  412. awkward in

  413. society.

  414. And so they

  415. were put onto

  416. this island

  417. and kind of

  418. left there.

  419. And the

  420. mother of

  421. this boy

  422. found out

  423. that there

  424. was this

  425. island there.

  426. And she

  427. said,

  428. I want to

  429. go and

  430. find out

  431. what this

  432. is about.

  433. I want to

  434. go and

  435. see these

  436. people.

  437. And do

  438. you know

  439. what her

  440. husband said?

  441. Her husband

  442. said,

  443. don't you

  444. dare go.

  445. Because if

  446. you go,

  447. like,

  448. you don't

  449. speak

  450. canto.

  451. If you

  452. go,

  453. like,

  454. you might

  455. get something,

  456. it might

  457. be dangerous.

  458. If you

  459. go,

  460. well,

  461. why should

  462. we bother

  463. about those

  464. guys?

  465. We've got

  466. enough

  467. issues of

  468. ourselves.

  469. But the

  470. mum went

  471. with the

  472. whole family.

  473. And the

  474. dad actually

  475. went kind

  476. of following

  477. on behind

  478. because,

  479. you know,

  480. the mum

  481. was pretty

  482. strong.

  483. And he

  484. got to

  485. the point

  486. where they

  487. got to

  488. the island.

  489. Everybody

  490. gets off

  491. the boat.

  492. Dad stays

  493. in the

  494. boat.

  495. He's not

  496. getting off.

  497. But they

  498. get off and

  499. they see

  500. that these

  501. people who

  502. were this

  503. leper colony,

  504. they actually

  505. realized these

  506. are real

  507. people.

  508. These are

  509. not just

  510. lepers.

  511. They're human

  512. beings who

  513. are real.

  514. people.

  515. And they

  516. walked up

  517. to them

  518. in a

  519. frightened

  520. way because

  521. they were

  522. scared of

  523. stepping out

  524. of their

  525. comfort zone

  526. to these

  527. unknown

  528. people.

  529. At one

  530. point,

  531. they walked

  532. up to

  533. one and

  534. one of

  535. the lepers

  536. reached out

  537. and touched

  538. the head

  539. of the sun.

  540. And they

  541. looked into

  542. each other's

  543. eyes and

  544. there was

  545. this moment

  546. of saying,

  547. you have

  548. dignity and

  549. you have

  550. worth and

  551. you have

  552. value.

  553. I wonder

  554. how many

  555. of us see

  556. things in

  557. Hong Kong

  558. and yet

  559. we're not

  560. willing to

  561. reach out

  562. because we're

  563. afraid.

  564. How many

  565. of us are

  566. more like

  567. the dad

  568. who wants

  569. to stay

  570. in the

  571. boat?

  572. But the

  573. call of

  574. the gospel

  575. is not

  576. that we're

  577. called just

  578. to have

  579. human

  580. compassion

  581. on people.

  582. It's that

  583. we have

  584. an incredible

  585. message of

  586. hope and

  587. life,

  588. of forgiveness

  589. and grace

  590. and mercy

  591. to bring

  592. hope to

  593. the hopeless,

  594. to bring

  595. light to

  596. those who

  597. are poor,

  598. prisoners,

  599. blind,

  600. oppressed.

  601. That's why

  602. we're here

  603. as a church

  604. and that's

  605. one of the

  606. reasons why

  607. we're doing

  608. this walk

  609. today because

  610. we want to

  611. see what

  612. would it

  613. look like

  614. with us

  615. who tend

  616. to focus

  617. so much

  618. on what

  619. we don't

  620. have to

  621. remember how

  622. much God

  623. has given

  624. us and

  625. then to

  626. look out

  627. and see

  628. what is it

  629. that the

  630. people God

  631. has placed

  632. around us.

  633. That's partly

  634. why we're

  635. starting this

  636. love offering.

  637. So over the

  638. next four

  639. weeks we're

  640. going to be

  641. sharing about

  642. the partners

  643. who are

  644. reaching out

  645. into Hong

  646. Kong in

  647. different ways

  648. to think how

  649. we can get

  650. involved in

  651. supporting them

  652. financially,

  653. in supporting

  654. them even by

  655. saying,

  656. well, could I

  657. just go and

  658. see?

  659. Could I just

  660. go and see?

  661. Some of you

  662. are already

  663. involved and I

  664. encourage you to

  665. just keep sharing

  666. with other people

  667. what you're seeing.

  668. But the spirit of

  669. the Lord is not

  670. just on Jesus.

  671. The spirit of the

  672. Lord is on us

  673. as Christians.

  674. God has sent

  675. us into this

  676. world to

  677. proclaim good

  678. news to

  679. people.

  680. There is a

  681. real cost in

  682. going.

  683. There is a

  684. cost that

  685. Jesus paid.

  686. There is a

  687. cost, but

  688. Jesus paid it

  689. for us because

  690. he saw us.

  691. So my question

  692. is, who do

  693. you see?

  694. Who do you

  695. see?

  696. And my prayer

  697. is that God

  698. would open our

  699. eyes, that we

  700. would pray, God

  701. open my eyes to

  702. see who you

  703. want me to see

  704. this morning.

  705. Who you want

  706. me to see so

  707. that you might

  708. show me how I

  709. might reach out.

  710. If your kids

  711. and you focus on

  712. your kids'
