  1. Father, thank you that it wasn't as if just it goes up to the book of Acts and then nobody's a Christian until us.

  2. We thank you, Father, that you have maintained your church in every generation from the death and resurrection of Jesus and his ascension in the day of Pentecostal today.

  3. You have maintained your church.

  4. And in every generation there have been people who have loved you and praised you.

  5. Father, pour out your Holy Spirit upon us that we might be faithful in our generation.

  6. Father, send out laborers into the harvest.

  7. This harvest, you have a harvest in Ottawa.

  8. And Father, send laborers into the harvest.

  9. Use us.

  10. But now we ask, Father, that your Holy Spirit would calm and settle our souls so that as we read your word written and hear your word, that you will come and minister deep within.

  11. This we ask in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior.

  12. Amen.

  13. Amen.

  14. This is the year 5,777 if you are an Orthodox Jew.

  15. 5,777.

  16. And Orthodox Jews have calculated this date.

  17. It's the number of years that everything has existed.

  18. They go back through what we call the Old Testament.

  19. They call the Tanakh and have calculated that the world is 5,777 years old.

  20. And we're just finishing up a series.

  21. Today is the last Sunday of my series of going through the first 11 chapters of Genesis.

  22. Genesis.

  23. And so one of the things is, you know, do Christians have to believe that the world is 5,777 years old?

  24. Or is there a little bit of variation that is in that?

  25. How do we read the Bible?

  26. One of the things that people have asked me is, George, do you read the Bible literally?

  27. And so this last of Sundays on Genesis 11, I've sort of said a little bit about it before, but it's actually an appropriate time, especially given what happens in Abram and especially given the spiritual needs that we have, to actually take a time just for a second and consider this question.

  28. Do Christians have to believe that the world is 5,777 years old?

  29. So if you have your Bibles, Genesis chapter 10, and we're going to, Genesis 11, sorry.

    Genesis 10 chapter mention

  30. And we're going to just look at verse 10, which gives us another one of those genealogies.

  31. And it's a genealogy with ages.

  32. And we'll just start reading.

  33. And when I move, we'll just start reading.

  34. And then I just want to make a few comments about it.

  35. And here it goes.

  36. First chapter 11, verse 10.

  37. And these are the generations of Shem.

  38. When Shem was 100 years old, he fathered Arpashad two years after the flood.

  39. And Shem lived after he fathered Arpashad 500 years and had other sons and daughters.

  40. When Arpashad had lived 35 years, he fathered Shelah.

  41. And Arpashad lived after he fathered Shelah 403 years and had other sons and daughters.

  42. When Shelah had lived 30 years, he fathered Eber.

  43. And I'm not going to keep reading.

  44. You get the idea.

  45. So here's the thing.

  46. First of all, if you want to really know some of how I've been trying to understand the age of the earth, etc., etc., which I'm not going to reiterate.

  47. I just encourage you to go back and listen to some of my sermons.

  48. The first one on Genesis 1-1 and how I talked about historical Adam and how I talked about knowing the flood.

  49. I'm not going to reiterate those things.

  50. I just want to look at a very particular way of actually listening to what the Bible says and what the Bible doesn't say.

  51. And what it actually says here in Hebrews, in Hebrew means that we actually can't really calculate the age of the earth from this.

  52. Because the genealogy doesn't work like a combination, the numbers in a combination lock where everything is just one number after another.

  53. And it's like a mechanical type of order.

  54. The word fathered just can also mean ancestor of.

  55. And instantly I can feel certain people feeling a little bit antsy.

  56. But here, could you put up the first point, Andrew?

  57. This is going to be my big, this is really a far more important point than maybe most of us realize.

  58. Let God be God and let his word written be his word to us.

  59. Let God be God and let his word written be his word to us.

  60. When scholars study the Bible, not just this one bit, but when they study the whole Bible from cover to cover,

  61. one of the things they notice when they study the Bible from cover to cover

  62. is that the biblical writers don't treat genealogies in a, like the way you treat instructions to fix something in your computer

  63. or instructions on a bank machine or combinations in a combination lock.

  64. So for instance, if you read the same genealogy in the book of Luke,

  65. you'll discover that in fact,

  66. I have to make sure I get the names right here.

  67. If you study the same genealogy in Luke,

  68. you'll discover that

  69. Shelah,

  70. if you look down here,

  71. you know how it says verse 12,

  72. when Arpashad had lived 35 years,

  73. he fathered Shelah.

  74. If you read the same genealogy in Luke,

  75. you'll discover that Shelah is Arpashad's grandson.

  76. So does this mean the Bible's...

  77. No, what...

  78. They didn't write genealogies

  79. to try to communicate this type of historical knowledge.

  80. You can skip generations.

  81. That's not me saying this because I'm some liberal.

  82. It's actually because

  83. if you read all of the Bible

  84. and just see how it is that the Bible

  85. is trying to communicate,

  86. you realize that they don't...

  87. They use...

  88. One of the things they do with genealogies,

  89. I think is in the Indiana Jones movies

  90. or some of those other older movies,

  91. he has to go on a trip from wherever he is in California or whatever,

  92. and he has to go to some other place in the world,

  93. and all of a sudden you see a map,

  94. and maybe you see like a picture of a plane

  95. moving across the ocean and landing places,

  96. and then maybe like a picture of a camel or a balloon or something

  97. as it goes from place to place to place.

  98. Part of the way that the Bible uses genealogies

  99. is to just show a connection between one group and another.

  100. Part of what it's talking about

  101. is it's trying to communicate who's significant.

  102. And part of what it's trying to communicate

  103. is if you actually count up the ages,

  104. and this is another reason for you to understand

  105. that just the way they use it,

  106. it's like the significant person

  107. that is the ancestor of this person,

  108. is if you add up the ages,

  109. then Shem, right,

  110. who's one of the sons of Noah,

  111. who was in the ark,

  112. if you add up the ages,

  113. Shem outlives Abraham by 35 years.

  114. And yet there's no record wherever in the Bible

  115. that when Abraham's going around

  116. that Shem is around

  117. or some of these other people on the list.

  118. If you add up the ages,

  119. Shem and Abraham's grandson Jacob

  120. would have been able to hang out together.

  121. And Jacob would have been able to talk to Shem

  122. for 35 years after his grandfather had died.

  123. See, here's the real big significance to this.

  124. Let God be God and let his word written

  125. be his word to us.

  126. Like a lot of us,

  127. when we hear things like this,

  128. we say, well, that's not fair.

  129. Why doesn't the Bible just say what it means?

  130. But what we're doing when we say that

  131. is we're not actually saying,

  132. why doesn't the Bible just say what it means?

  133. What we're actually saying is,

  134. God, we think our ways of writing

  135. are the way that you should have written.

  136. How dare you not write the way we write?

  137. Like, how dare you not write

  138. the way we write newspapers

  139. or we write academic papers?

  140. Like, if you want to speak to us,

  141. speak in the type of ways

  142. that we understand things.

  143. God, like, how dare you just...

  144. Hold on a moment.

  145. Like, for a committed Christian,

  146. like, what's going on there?

  147. See, here's one of the other things about this.

  148. Like, when I was growing up,

  149. and I still see it so many times

  150. when I listen to different speakers

  151. and I go to different conferences

  152. and I get involved in different debates,

  153. that a lot of people,

  154. what they think of is somebody

  155. who takes the Bible literally,

  156. who finds one simple text

  157. and uses it to shout down

  158. every other text

  159. and every other type of idea of nuance

  160. and just uses it like a battering ram.

  161. I'm not going to get into a discussion

  162. about baptism,

  163. but I was just listening to something

  164. and a guy went on and on and on

  165. and on and on

  166. about how he believed the Bible

  167. and the Bible's view on baptism.

  168. And he just went on and on and on

  169. and he kept quoting this one verse.

  170. And what you'd never know

  171. if you listen to him

  172. is that there's 88 different passages

  173. in the New Testament

  174. that talk about baptism.

  175. 88 different passages.

  176. I'll say it again,

  177. 88 different verses.

  178. And this guy,

  179. who for a lot of us,

  180. we think of,

  181. that's a strong Bible man.

  182. He's a Bible teacher.

  183. He doesn't just sort of give,

  184. you know, blah, blah, blah, blah.

  185. He teaches the Bible.

  186. He gives you the Bible.

  187. It's simple.

  188. It's clear.

  189. But he actually isn't giving you the Bible.

  190. He made no attempt

  191. to talk about 87 other verses.

  192. He made no attempt whatsoever

  193. to try to say,

  194. well, you know,

  195. if you look at all of these verses together

  196. and listen to all that God says,

  197. this is what God says.

  198. And one of the very hard things

  199. for Bible-believing churches

  200. and for Bible-believing Christians

  201. is a lot of times

  202. we don't actually believe the Bible

  203. and we don't actually listen to the Bible.

  204. So what we want to do

  205. is we want to find one simple verse

  206. that we can use

  207. like a club

  208. or a battering ram

  209. to knock everybody else out of the way

  210. or we want to use it

  211. like a megaphone

  212. to shout everybody down

  213. and we pick a verse

  214. which is sort of the way that we think.

  215. But the whole point

  216. of listening to the Bible

  217. and listening to God

  218. is to try to figure out

  219. how he thinks

  220. because he's smarter than us.

  221. He's wiser than us.

  222. He's God.

  223. And so scholars

  224. who study the Bible

  225. very, very carefully

  226. and don't just read this one little bit

  227. but read it from cover to cover

  228. have understood

  229. that the way the Bible uses genealogies,

  230. the way that God chose

  231. to reveal his word

  232. actually preserves mystery

  233. about calculating certain things.

  234. And if we say

  235. that God can't do that

  236. we say,

  237. whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa,

  238. what do you mean God can't do that?

  239. Really?

  240. He can't?

  241. Well, suck it up.

  242. He did.

  243. That's what he did.

  244. Like get over yourself.

  245. Like let God be God

  246. and let his word written

  247. be his word to us.

  248. And don't just harp on one verse

  249. but have a deep commitment

  250. to read the Bible

  251. from cover to cover

  252. and to just really listen deeply

  253. to all that God wants to say to us.

  254. And then as he speaks to us

  255. throughout all of scripture

  256. and we are humbled before it

  257. we can say,

  258. isn't that very interesting?

  259. Is it God uses genealogies?

  260. He chose a time

  261. when genealogies were used

  262. and it was fine for people

  263. to skip one generation,

  264. two, five,

  265. who knows how many generations

  266. to just show the significant thing.

  267. And you know,

  268. here's the thing

  269. which is really interesting

  270. is that we get so caught up,

  271. those of us

  272. in a more evangelical

  273. type of tradition,

  274. we get so caught up

  275. with these types

  276. of very, very

  277. like an attempt

  278. to, I don't know,

  279. defend the Bible

  280. but we actually miss

  281. what the other thing

  282. which is really going on

  283. in the Bible

  284. because here's the thing

  285. which is also so significant

  286. about this text

  287. is that just before this text,

  288. just before this genealogy,

  289. we have the story

  290. of the Tower of Babel

  291. which I talked about last week.

  292. That God comes down

  293. and as part of God's grace to us,

  294. when he judges,

  295. he judges in mercy

  296. and part of his mercy

  297. is he scatters people

  298. throughout the entire face

  299. of the earth.

  300. They want to do a great evil.

  301. They want to remove all barriers.

  302. They want to remove all limits.

  303. They want to pretend to themselves

  304. that they've become gods.

  305. They want to do

  306. whatever a god can do

  307. because in the ancient world,

  308. just as we on one level

  309. implicitly think,

  310. the ancient world gods

  311. can do whatever they

  312. dang well feel like doing

  313. and that's what human beings

  314. want to become.

  315. They want to become like gods,

  316. do whatever they dang well

  317. feel they can do

  318. and God in his mercy

  319. scatters them

  320. throughout the whole face

  321. of the earth

  322. so then immediately after that

  323. what he does

  324. is he shows these

  325. significant people going along

  326. and what he's saying to us is

  327. on the ground

  328. it looks like God

  329. is out of control.

  330. I mean the world

  331. is out of control

  332. that God has not

  333. remembered his promise

  334. to send a person

  335. who would destroy

  336. the serpent

  337. and open the way

  338. back to the garden

  339. of Eden

  340. in fellowship with God

  341. and what this genealogy

  342. does amongst other things

  343. is say,

  344. look at that,

  345. throughout all of the changes

  346. and chances of this fleeting world

  347. God has not forgotten

  348. his promise

  349. and time after time

  350. there's a significant person

  351. and every time you see

  352. this significant person

  353. you are being reminded

  354. that God has not

  355. forgotten his promise.

  356. There is going to come one

  357. who will slay the serpent

  358. and be used by God

  359. to make us right with God again.

  360. That's what God is doing.

  361. It's really important for us

  362. who live as Christendom

  363. increasingly lies in ruins

  364. around us

  365. and we live amidst the ruins

  366. and the fragments

  367. of Christendom

  368. to remember that God

  369. is still sovereign

  370. and in control

  371. and remembers

  372. and is committed

  373. to his promises.

  374. We have to let God

  375. be God

  376. and let his word

  377. be his word to us

  378. because we follow God

  379. with our ears.

  380. We follow Jesus

  381. with our ears

  382. by listening to him.

  383. We come to faith

  384. by our ears.

  385. Not by our ability

  386. to see the future.

  387. Not by our ability

  388. to control the future.

  389. But we follow Jesus

  390. with our ears.

  391. Now,

  392. some of you might say,

  393. okay, George,

  394. that's a very interesting thing

  395. to get out of a genealogy.

  396. And I have to confess,

  397. I sort of don't really,

  398. you know,

  399. those of us

  400. who maybe aren't

  401. from evangelical backgrounds,

  402. we might say,

  403. yeah, George,

  404. you get those Bible-believing guys,

  405. you know,

  406. take them down a peg or two.

  407. And for those of us

  408. who are from Bible-believing

  409. that type of backgrounds,

  410. we might say,

  411. well,

  412. it's a bit of a surprise

  413. to maybe think

  414. that some of those people

  415. that we like to listen to

  416. who are really harangue

  417. on one verse

  418. that they might actually

  419. not be listening to the Bible

  420. and it's a very humbling

  421. thing for us

  422. to try to get our mind

  423. around some of these

  424. types of things.

  425. But,

  426. okay,

  427. so God is keeping

  428. his eye on the ball.

  429. He's going to send a promise

  430. and it all comes down

  431. to Abram.

  432. I think that's what John said

  433. if I just read

  434. and I guess it comes down

  435. to this hero,

  436. doesn't it?

  437. This hero of faith,

  438. this father of three

  439. of the great religions

  440. on the planet,

  441. Christianity,

  442. Judaism,

  443. and Islam,

  444. all trace back

  445. the significance of Abraham.

  446. And so I guess you're right.

  447. This genealogy comes

  448. and it ends with Abraham,

  449. this really,

  450. really,

  451. really,

  452. really great man.

  453. And as soon as we start

  454. to think,

  455. yeah,

  456. I guess it does come down

  457. to this really,

  458. really great man,

  459. and I guess I am listening

  460. to the Bible,

  461. George,

  462. that's where we have

  463. to say,

  464. time out.

  465. It doesn't come down

  466. to a great man.

  467. It doesn't come down

  468. to a great man.

  469. It comes to a guy

  470. with no hope

  471. who worships the moon.

  472. Can you put up

  473. the next point?

  474. God does not build elites.

  475. He calls and blesses

  476. the hopeless.

  477. You see,

  478. here's this other thing

  479. in terms of our own thinking

  480. and the way we sort of

  481. just assume

  482. that the Bible

  483. is going to match

  484. with our thinking

  485. rather than listening

  486. to the Bible.

  487. And in our thinking,

  488. I don't know,

  489. you get education

  490. so you can become

  491. like more,

  492. you know,

  493. you can get a better job,

  494. you can have,

  495. you can get promotions.

  496. I remember a few years ago

  497. I asked somebody

  498. what was the difference

  499. between somebody

  500. who got a computer

  501. engineering degree

  502. and a computer science degree

  503. and they said

  504. $20,000 a year in salary.

  505. The engineer getting more money

  506. than the computer scientist.

  507. And I don't know

  508. if that's true,

  509. it's just what they said.

  510. And we're just used

  511. to the fact that,

  512. you know,

  513. that we try to become

  514. more and more powerful.

  515. We try to become

  516. better and better and better

  517. and surely then

  518. the way God is going

  519. to work

  520. is if he's going

  521. to be keeping

  522. his eye on the ball

  523. and if you're going

  524. to have a great man

  525. of faith

  526. that it's all about

  527. God just building up

  528. this thing

  529. to getting to this point

  530. where Abraham

  531. has it all together,

  532. like where he's,

  533. he just has this great faith

  534. and God recognizes

  535. his great faith

  536. and he has all this potential

  537. and that's what God recognizes,

  538. but that's not what

  539. the genealogy says at all.

  540. Like,

  541. look what it actually says.

  542. Verse 27.

  543. Now,

  544. these are the generations

  545. of Terah.

  546. Terah fathered Abram.

  547. Later on,

  548. his name becomes Abraham.

  549. Nahor and Haran.

  550. And Haran fathered Lot.

  551. Okay,

  552. so there's this guy,

  553. Terah.

  554. He has three sons.

  555. Haran died in the presence

  556. of his father,

  557. Terah,

  558. in the land of his kindred

  559. in Ur of the Chaldeans.

  560. Now,

  561. there's only Terah

  562. and two boys.

  563. And Abram

  564. and Nahor took wives.

  565. The name of Abram's wife

  566. was Sarai

  567. and the name of Nahor's wife,

  568. Milcah,

  569. the daughter of Haran,

  570. the father of Milcah

  571. and Iscah.

  572. Now,

  573. just pause.

  574. We know from

  575. archaeological evidence

  576. that in Ur

  577. of the Chaldeans

  578. that they worshiped

  579. the moon god.

  580. and people

  581. who know Hebrew

  582. say that both

  583. Sarah and Milcah

  584. are named

  585. after aspects

  586. of the gods

  587. and goddesses

  588. under the panoply

  589. of the moon god.

  590. God is calling people

  591. who worship the moon.

  592. The whole genealogy

  593. has come down

  594. to one guy,

  595. Terah,

  596. who has three sons.

  597. One son dies.

  598. The two remaining sons' wives

  599. who become important

  600. are both named

  601. after goddesses

  602. in the moon god's

  603. pantheon.

  604. We know actually

  605. from other places

  606. in the Bible

  607. where it tells us

  608. that in fact Abraham

  609. before God's call

  610. worshipped other gods,

  611. not the true

  612. and living God.

  613. And then a verse

  614. which is going to be

  615. unbelievably important

  616. in a couple.

  617. Look at verse 30.

  618. Now Sarai,

  619. that's the wife of Abraham,

  620. was barren.

  621. She had no child.

  622. So as God formed an elite,

  623. it's come down to Terah,

  624. has three sons,

  625. one dies,

  626. two left,

  627. and one of the sons,

  628. his wife has no children.

  629. These aren't the powerful elite,

  630. at least not the way

  631. Christians and Jewish people

  632. would understand it.

  633. You see,

  634. one of the things we have,

  635. one of the problems we have

  636. with thinking that God calls

  637. and forms elites

  638. is that it does

  639. several things within us.

  640. it either means

  641. that we become

  642. very,

  643. very,

  644. very proud

  645. because obviously

  646. he's coming

  647. and dealing with us.

  648. So obviously,

  649. like I'm going to have faith

  650. like Abraham,

  651. obviously I'm part of the elite.

  652. Or it lets us off the hook

  653. from having to follow God

  654. because we say,

  655. well,

  656. you know,

  657. I'm not like,

  658. I'm not like Abraham.

  659. You know,

  660. I'm not very well educated.

  661. I don't have that many abilities.

  662. I'm not a great at praying,

  663. you know,

  664. whatever it is.

  665. So I'm sort of off the hook.

  666. But the whole point

  667. of this text

  668. is it's all setting us up

  669. to the hopelessness

  670. of the line

  671. and how God speaks

  672. into hopelessness,

  673. how God speaks

  674. into this mixture

  675. of strength

  676. and frailty

  677. and weakness,

  678. and how

  679. in the midst

  680. of something

  681. which looks completely

  682. and utterly unworthy

  683. and utterly helpless,

  684. God's commitment

  685. and promise,

  686. God being God

  687. and God speaking

  688. creates things

  689. when people listen

  690. and say yes.

  691. You see,

  692. if God actually works

  693. through both

  694. the hopeless

  695. and people

  696. who have excellency

  697. and stuff like that,

  698. in fact,

  699. it's all about God

  700. and not about us,

  701. then there's nothing

  702. to ever be proud about

  703. if you're a Christian.

  704. Nor is there ever

  705. any reason

  706. why we should think

  707. that it can't be us,

  708. that God is calling.

  709. Look down to chapter 12,

  710. verses 1 to 3.

  711. And actually,

  712. just a pause here.

  713. Could you put up

  714. the next point, Andrew?

  715. Here's the thing

  716. which is going to be

  717. really, really amazing

  718. is that one of the things

  719. that characters

  720. is if you study

  721. ancient paganism

  722. and even modern paganism,

  723. the gods are fickle.

  724. One day they wake up,

  725. they don't like you.

  726. Don't like you,

  727. don't like you,

  728. don't like you.

  729. But they like you,

  730. you, and you.

  731. Next day,

  732. sucks to be the first group.

  733. I like a different group.

  734. The gods are fickle.

  735. You have to sort of figure out

  736. maybe what you've done.

  737. And a lot of times

  738. it hasn't been

  739. that you've done anything,

  740. it's just that the gods

  741. are fighting with each other,

  742. that the gods,

  743. many wives or lovers

  744. have gotten jealous

  745. with each other

  746. and they've just

  747. zapped a few of you

  748. or blessed a few of you

  749. and it's the gods fighting

  750. and we're just

  751. their little pawns.

  752. And that's the world

  753. that Abram grows up in.

  754. In a world

  755. of fickle gods,

  756. the true God

  757. commits promises

  758. and keeps his word.

  759. Look at what happens

  760. in chapter 12

  761. verses 1 to 4.

  762. Now the Lord said

  763. to Abram,

  764. go from your country

  765. and your kindred

  766. and your father's house

  767. to the land

  768. that I will show you

  769. and I will make you

  770. a great nation.

  771. I will bless you

  772. and make your name great

  773. so that you will be

  774. a blessing.

  775. I will bless those

  776. who bless you

  777. and him who dishonors you

  778. I will curse

  779. and in you

  780. all the families

  781. of the earth

  782. shall be blessed.

  783. So Abram went

  784. as the Lord

  785. had told him

  786. and Lot went with him.

  787. Abram was 75 years old

  788. when he departed

  789. from Haran

  790. and if you go back

  791. and if you go

  792. and read more

  793. of the story of Abraham

  794. you'll discover

  795. that his wife

  796. was 10 years younger

  797. than him.

  798. That means

  799. that when Abram

  800. goes out

  801. he's 75 years old

  802. he has a wife

  803. who's 65 years old

  804. and his wife

  805. has never had a baby.

  806. His wife

  807. has never had a baby.

  808. And yet

  809. look what he says

  810. to Abram.

  811. Go from your country

  812. and your kindred

  813. verse 1 again

  814. and your father's house

  815. to the land

  816. that I will show you

  817. verse 2

  818. and I will make you

  819. a great nation.

  820. I will make you

  821. a great nation.

  822. He's 75 years old

  823. he's going out

  824. with a 65 year old wife

  825. who's never had a baby

  826. and God says to him

  827. I will make you

  828. a great nation

  829. and I will bless you

  830. and I will make

  831. your name great

  832. so that you will

  833. be a blessing.

  834. I will bless those

  835. who bless you

  836. and him who dishonors you

  837. I will curse

  838. and in you

  839. all the families

  840. of the earth

  841. shall be blessed.

  842. If you could put up

  843. the next point Andrew

  844. that would be very helpful.

  845. God's commitment

  846. and promises

  847. engender faith.

  848. I know that's a bit

  849. of a complicated word

  850. that some of you

  851. have never heard before

  852. but no one's faith

  853. causes God

  854. to commit

  855. and promise.

  856. What you're seeing

  857. here in the Bible

  858. is the great divide

  859. between the true God

  860. and all idols.

  861. What you see here

  862. is the great divide

  863. to how the Bible

  864. describes the gospel

  865. and what God

  866. wants to do

  867. for people

  868. and all religion

  869. and all spirituality

  870. and all irreligion.

  871. If you go along

  872. the Trans-Canada Highway

  873. from Ottawa

  874. as if you're going

  875. up to North Bay

  876. and somewhere along

  877. the trip

  878. as you're going

  879. on the Trans-Canada

  880. to go west

  881. there's a sign

  882. on the side of the road

  883. and on the side

  884. of the road

  885. the sign says

  886. that from this point on

  887. all the rivers

  888. that you see

  889. flow north.

  890. They all flow north

  891. to the Arctic Ocean

  892. to Hudson's Bay.

  893. Before that

  894. the waters flowed

  895. in a different direction.

  896. After that

  897. they flow

  898. in a different direction.

  899. and basically

  900. every religion

  901. every spirituality

  902. and part of the reason

  903. that people say

  904. that they can't be religious

  905. or they can't be spiritual

  906. is at the heart

  907. of all of these systems

  908. of thought

  909. is the belief

  910. that I have faith

  911. or I do rituals

  912. or I learn yoga

  913. or I learn

  914. how to say

  915. the Lord's Prayer

  916. or I get confirmed

  917. or I pray to Allah

  918. five times a day

  919. or I make my pilgrimage

  920. to Mecca

  921. or I learn

  922. all of the right

  923. praise songs

  924. or memorize

  925. part of the Bible

  926. or I sacrifice

  927. to the right

  928. Hindu gods

  929. and goddesses

  930. or the right

  931. Buddhist gods

  932. and goddesses

  933. and I follow

  934. the right practices

  935. and if I follow

  936. the right practices

  937. then God will commit

  938. to me

  939. and make promises

  940. to me

  941. and that's how

  942. all religion

  943. and all spirituality

  944. works

  945. but look at

  946. how it works here

  947. God takes someone

  948. who worships

  949. the moon

  950. and he's not

  951. even very swift

  952. in listening

  953. to God

  954. some of you

  955. are using versions

  956. of the Bible

  957. that when I read

  958. chapter 12

  959. verse 1

  960. in my version

  961. it says

  962. now the Lord

  963. said to Abram

  964. and some of your

  965. versions of the Bible

  966. said the Lord

  967. had said to Abram

  968. and in Hebrew

  969. like they're both

  970. good translations

  971. had said

  972. is probably

  973. a little bit

  974. more accurate

  975. what it's saying

  976. is that while

  977. Abram

  978. was still in Ur

  979. of the Chaldeans

  980. God had called him

  981. and he continued

  982. to call him

  983. and Abram

  984. sort of started

  985. to obey

  986. what had to be done

  987. but he didn't really

  988. obey what had to be done

  989. he left Ur

  990. of the Chaldeans

  991. but he left

  992. with his dad

  993. and his brothers

  994. and he goes

  995. to another place

  996. and it's only

  997. after the person

  998. dies there

  999. in fact he goes

  1000. to another place

  1001. which is prosperous

  1002. and another place

  1003. which worships

  1004. the moon

  1005. and God

  1006. has been calling him

  1007. and calling him

  1008. and calling him

  1009. the moon god worshiper

  1010. and he hasn't responded

  1011. until finally

  1012. the time comes

  1013. after many calls

  1014. that he responds

  1015. and in God's

  1016. look how it goes

  1017. the Lord said

  1018. to Abram

  1019. go from your country

  1020. and your kindred

  1021. and your father's house

  1022. to the land

1023. that I will show you

1024. and I will make you

  1025. a great nation

  1026. I will bless you

1027. I will make your name great

1028. so that you will be a blessing

  1029. I will bless those

  1030. who bless you

1031. and him who dishonors you

  1032. I will curse

  1033. and in you

  1034. all of the families

  1035. of the earth

  1036. shall be blessed

  1037. it's all

  1038. God will do it

  1039. God will do it

1040. and he says to Abraham

  1041. I am calling you

  1042. from worshiping the moon

  1043. I am calling you

  1044. even though

  1045. on a certain

  1046. on a human level

  1047. you are lacking

  1048. and respecting

  1049. you have no hope

  1050. I am calling you

1051. I am committing to you

  1052. I am promising

  1053. these mighty things

  1054. to you

1055. I will do these things

  1056. to you

  1057. if you go

  1058. the promise

  1059. the commitment

  1060. the promise

  1061. the commitment

  1062. the promise

  1063. the commitment

1064. and then in verse 4

  1065. so Abraham

  1066. went

  1067. as the Lord

  1068. told him

  1069. you see

  1070. God commits

  1071. to Abraham

  1072. he promises

  1073. to Abraham

  1074. and it's God's

  1075. commitment

  1076. and promises

  1077. which engender

  1078. faith

  1079. he doesn't look down

  1080. and say to Abraham

  1081. gosh you were so

  1082. faithful

  1083. gosh

  1084. you're just like

  1085. Andrew

  1086. you have 10 kids

  1087. great kids

  1088. I'm going to do

  1089. spectacular things

  1090. through you

  1091. get ready

  1092. you know

  1093. hang on

  1094. you're going to go

  1095. on an adventure

  1096. because you're so

  1097. faithful

  1098. you're so smart

  1099. you're good looking

  1100. all of those types

  1101. of things

  1102. you're

  1103. look whoa

  1104. wow

  1105. the theology

  1106. you know

  1107. whoa

  1108. you know

  1109. I can hardly

  1110. look down

  1111. at your halo

  1112. so bright

  1113. no

  1114. you worship

  1115. the moon

  1116. your situation

  1117. is hopeless

  1118. I've been calling

  1119. you for years

  1120. and you haven't

  1121. said yes

  1122. God commits

  1123. God promises

  1124. that's what

  1125. engenders

  1126. faith

  1127. that's what

  1128. engenders

  1129. faith

  1130. you see

  1131. that's one of

  1132. the reasons

  1133. why the mission

  1134. statement of this

  1135. church

  1136. is

  1137. making disciples

  1138. gripped by the

  1139. gospel

  1140. learning to live

  1141. for God's glory

  1142. making disciples

  1143. gripped by the

  1144. gospel

  1145. learning to live

  1146. for God's glory

  1147. because

  1148. we live

  1149. if you put up

  1150. the next point

  1151. that would be

  1152. great

  1153. God's promises

  1154. to Abraham

  1155. are spectacularly

  1156. kept

  1157. in the incarnation

  1158. birth

  1159. life

  1160. death

  1161. and resurrection

  1162. of Jesus

  1163. Messiah

1164. I mean one of the

  1165. amazing things

  1166. about all of this

  1167. remember I said

  1168. that we follow

  1169. God with our ears

  1170. we follow Jesus

  1171. with our ears

  1172. not with our eyes

  1173. the text goes ahead

  1174. and says that

  1175. God's going to show

  1176. Abraham these things

  1177. all Abraham has

  1178. is God's voice

  1179. and God's promise

  1180. to go

  1181. God makes this promise

  1182. God makes this commitment

  1183. Abraham's response

1184. is to respond in faith

1185. and do what he says

  1186. God makes this promise

  1187. God makes this promise

  1188. he makes this commitment

  1189. we begin

  1190. not just to trust

  1191. God

  1192. but to trust

  1193. in what he says

  1194. because it's when we

1195. trust in what he says

  1196. that we're really

  1197. trusting him

  1198. and so we hear

  1199. with our ears

1200. we hear with our ears

  1201. faith comes from hearing

1202. we hear with our ears

  1203. and we step out

  1204. in faith

1205. and as we step out

  1206. in faith

  1207. God will show us

  1208. from day to day

1209. what we need to be seen

  1210. but primarily

  1211. we follow him

  1212. with our ears

  1213. and Abraham

  1214. did not know

  1215. that this

  1216. him finally responding

  1217. as he finally comes

1218. the Bible doesn't tell us

  1219. why exactly it is

  1220. that Abraham

  1221. finally believed

  1222. and trusted

  1223. what God

  1224. was saying

  1225. to him

  1226. and I think

  1227. the reason

  1228. the Bible

  1229. doesn't tell us

  1230. that is because

  1231. that was something

  1232. unique to him

  1233. what we need

  1234. to listen to

  1235. is the rest

  1236. of the Bible

  1237. we need to see

  1238. the trustworthiness

  1239. of God's word

  1240. the wisdom

  1241. of his laws

  1242. we need to see

  1243. the wisdom

  1244. of the story

  1245. the beauty

  1246. of the story

  1247. we need to see

  1248. Jesus

  1249. we need to see

  1250. Jesus

  1251. dying upon the cross

  1252. as the perfect

  1253. revelation

  1254. of God's love

  1255. we need to understand

  1256. how God

  1257. has been keeping

  1258. his promises

  1259. from the time

  1260. of Abraham on

  1261. we need to see

  1262. how God

  1263. has been keeping

  1264. his promises

  1265. even to Adam

  1266. and Eve

  1267. that he would

  1268. send one

  1269. who would

  1270. slay the serpent

  1271. we need to see

  1272. how the tomb

  1273. is empty

  1274. and after

  1275. the tomb

  1276. is empty

  1277. and they cannot

  1278. find the body

  1279. and because

  1280. Jesus is risen

  1281. and the body

  1282. is not there

  1283. and thousands

  1284. and thousands

  1285. of people

  1286. who can just

  1287. walk down

  1288. to the grave

  1289. and see the body

  1290. of Jesus

  1291. believe that

  1292. Jesus has risen

  1293. from the dead

  1294. that he's no longer

  1295. there

  1296. that God

  1297. has vindicated

  1298. Jesus

  1299. as the one

  1300. who can slay

  1301. the serpent

  1302. and make human

  1303. beings right

  1304. with God

  1305. and we need

  1306. to see all

  1307. of these things

  1308. and have a new

  1309. certain ground

  1310. of hope

  1311. based on how

  1312. God has kept

  1313. his promises

  1314. that for every

  1315. single human being

  1316. and planet

  1317. on the earth

  1318. that God

  1319. has a call

  1320. to them

  1321. to come

  1322. to be made

  1323. right with him

  1324. through putting

  1325. their faith

  1326. and trust

  1327. in Jesus

  1328. and we need

  1329. to be gripped

  1330. with this story

  1331. we don't need

  1332. praise songs

  1333. to pump us up

  1334. we don't need

  1335. Bach

  1336. to make us

  1337. just think

  1338. how beautiful

  1339. and melodic

  1340. things are

  1341. we don't need

  1342. great art

  1343. I mean those

  1344. things are wonderful

  1345. when they come

  1346. we don't need

  1347. to have

  1348. spectacular rhetoric

  1349. we need to be

  1350. gripped with

  1351. God's promises

  1352. and gripped

  1353. by the gospel

  1354. and as we are

  1355. gripped by

  1356. God's promises

  1357. that's how

  1358. faith grows

  1359. within us

  1360. and the wonderful

  1361. thing about the gospel

  1362. the wonderful thing

  1363. that all of these

  1364. promises

  1365. when they culminate

  1366. in the coming

  1367. and the death

  1368. and resurrection

  1369. of Jesus

  1370. is we understand

  1371. in a far deeper

  1372. way

  1373. what God is going

  1374. to do to slay

  1375. the serpent

  1376. in a far deeper

  1377. way

  1378. what God is going

  1379. to do to make

  1380. us right with him

  1381. how Jesus

1382. God the son of God

  1383. when he dies

  1384. upon the cross

  1385. that he's dying

  1386. upon the cross

  1387. and he is able

  1388. to die

  1389. and bear the punishment

  1390. and the shame

  1391. of every single

  1392. thing that we have

  1393. ever done wrong

  1394. every accusation

  1395. in our head

  1396. every accusation

  1397. by our loved ones

  1398. every accusation

  1399. by coaches

  1400. or bosses

  1401. by demons

  1402. or by the world

1403. or by our own conscience

  1404. every accusation

  1405. all of those

  1406. accusations

  1407. against us

  1408. fall on him

  1409. and are dealt

  1410. with by him

1411. and all of the things

  1412. that we cannot do

  1413. that Jesus

  1414. we not only have

  1415. Jesus taken away

  1416. all of the bad

  1417. things we've done

  1418. all of the things

  1419. that we are ashamed

  1420. of

  1421. all of our weakness

  1422. not only have

  1423. all of those things

  1424. dealt with by Jesus

  1425. but his actual ability

  1426. to obey the father

1427. and to live a life

  1428. of obedience

  1429. where even though

  1430. he is tempted

  1431. in every way

1432. as we are without sin

1433. that he has not sinned

  1434. his perfect life

  1435. standing for me

1436. when I get in him

  1437. by faith

  1438. made right with God

  1439. by faith

  1440. if I preach

  1441. the most spectacular sermon

1442. that has ever been preached

1443. in the history of the world

  1444. next Sunday

1445. it does not add anything

1446. to what Jesus does for me

1447. and God does not love me

  1448. one iota more

  1449. if next Sunday

1450. I preach the worst sermon

  1451. of my entire life

1452. God will not love me less

  1453. it doesn't take away

1454. from what Christ has done

  1455. my hope is built

  1456. on nothing less

  1457. than Jesus' blood

  1458. and righteousness

  1459. I dare not trust

  1460. the sweetest frame

  1461. but wholly lean

  1462. on Jesus' name

1463. that's what we sang earlier

  1464. that's the promise

  1465. of the gospel

  1466. and as it grips

  1467. as faith grows

  1468. just wind up

1469. with a couple of things

1470. if you could put up

  1471. the next point

  1472. the mind matters

  1473. but we must obey

  1474. our way to clarity

  1475. the mind matters

1476. don't kiss your brains goodbye

1477. but we obey our ways

  1478. to clarity

  1479. you know

  1480. when we began

  1481. my wife and I

  1482. began the adventure

  1483. of trying to actually

1484. give away 10% of our money

1485. to God's work or more

  1486. I wish I could tell you

  1487. that we had such

  1488. unbelievable faith

  1489. in God's word

  1490. that we just went

  1491. from what we were

  1492. which was virtually nothing

1493. to giving 10% of our income

1494. but no what we did

  1495. is we trusted God

  1496. for 10 more dollars

  1497. and you know what

1498. the sky didn't fall in

  1499. we didn't go hungry

  1500. God met our needs

  1501. so we trusted him

  1502. for 10 dollars more

1503. the sky didn't fall in

  1504. we didn't go hungry

  1505. we trusted him

  1506. for 10 dollars more

1507. until we could trust him

  1508. with it all

  1509. because you know

  1510. we tithe

1511. because we want to trust

1512. that God is our Jehovah Jireh

  1513. because

  1514. giving is the highest

  1515. form of living

  1516. you know

  1517. with sexual faithfulness

1518. with working on your marriage

  1519. with trusting God's word

  1520. about miracles

  1521. trusting God's word

  1522. about miracles

  1523. makes you smarter

  1524. not dumber

  1525. trusting God's word

  1526. makes you wiser

1527. and so you don't fear

  1528. what the world fears

  1529. and you don't trust

  1530. what the world trusts

1531. but you start to have

  1532. a type of balance

  1533. and wisdom

  1534. that comes

  1535. not from being ashamed

  1536. of God's word

1537. but from trusting God's word

  1538. that's how it is

  1539. that our minds

  1540. get renewed

  1541. we got to obey

  1542. our way to clarity

1543. it's when you bear witness

  1544. to Jesus

1545. and people make fun of you

  1546. and they beat you

  1547. in arguments

  1548. but you bear witness

  1549. to Jesus

1550. and you call out to him

  1551. and say Lord

  1552. help me to know

  1553. what to say

1554. I want to trust your word

1555. I want to be able

  1556. to bear witness

  1557. that's how you learn

  1558. that's how you grow

  1559. that's how God's word

  1560. becomes more precious

  1561. and deep to you

  1562. use our minds

  1563. but you obey

  1564. your way to clarity

1565. we just want to use

  1566. our minds

  1567. until we've had it

  1568. all figured out

  1569. but we obey

  1570. our way to clarity

  1571. and here's the really

  1572. big thing

  1573. in closing

1574. if you could put up

  1575. the final point

  1576. I follow my

  1577. I follow Jesus

  1578. with my ears open

  1579. and my eyes closed

1580. you see in a sense

  1581. that's what Abraham

  1582. had to do

  1583. isn't it

  1584. okay

  1585. Abraham

  1586. you're 75 years old

  1587. you have a 65 year old

  1588. wife

  1589. you've never had a child

1590. I'm going to make you

  1591. into a great nation

  1592. go

  1593. I'm going to go

  1594. to a high school

  1595. graduation ceremony

  1596. on Thursday

  1597. I can tell you

  1598. right now

1599. one of the main things

  1600. we're going to say

  1601. in the graduation ceremony

1602. what are they going to say

  1603. we all probably know

  1604. follow your dreams

  1605. follow your dreams

1606. don't let any other people

1607. tell you what your dreams are

  1608. follow your dreams

  1609. one of the things

  1610. that you know

1611. the wardens and I say

  1612. when we

  1613. every fall

  1614. when we come down

  1615. to make our budget

  1616. one of the things

  1617. we say is

  1618. we say

1619. we want to try to live

  1620. in the real world

1621. and in the real world

1622. how does the real world

1623. work in the fall of 2017

  1624. when we sit down

  1625. we don't say

  1626. follow our dreams

  1627. we say

  1628. you know what

  1629. only God knows

  1630. the future

  1631. we have no idea

  1632. how much money

  1633. God will provide

  1634. for us

  1635. in the next year

  1636. now that doesn't

  1637. sound as sexy

  1638. and as moving

  1639. as follow your dream

  1640. but which one's real

  1641. every human being

  1642. goes into the future

  1643. with their eyes closed

  1644. no human being

  1645. not the smartest person

  1646. in the world

  1647. not the greatest musician

  1648. not the greatest poet

  1649. not the greatest mystic

  1650. no human being

  1651. by their own power

  1652. knows what will happen

  1653. in three minutes

  1654. in two minutes

  1655. in one minute

1656. every single one of us

  1657. walks into the future

  1658. with our eyes closed

  1659. see the Bible

  1660. brings us

  1661. to the real world

  1662. and the real state

  1663. of our heart

1664. and in the real world

1665. and in the real state

  1666. of our world

  1667. the real state

  1668. of our heart

  1669. I am not a god

  1670. I am not a goddess

  1671. sorry the movie

  1672. Arrival

  1673. spoiler alert

  1674. is completely

  1675. and utterly wrong

  1676. learning a new language

  1677. will not allow you

  1678. to know the future

  1679. like you're a god

  1680. it's a dumb idea

  1681. like it's dumb

  1682. but it appeals

  1683. to our pride

  1684. nobody knows

  1685. the future

  1686. the Bible

  1687. is both

  1688. unbelievably

  1689. on one level

  1690. depressingly realistic

  1691. but it's not

  1692. depressingly realistic

  1693. it's realistic

  1694. and God says

  1695. I know the future

  1696. follow me

  1697. with your ears

  1698. and George

  1699. when you follow me

  1700. with your ears

1701. what have I told you

  1702. I have told you

  1703. George

  1704. that 4,000 years ago

  1705. I spoke to a man

  1706. Abraham

  1707. about how I would

  1708. bless every family

  1709. on the earth

  1710. through him

  1711. and George

  1712. I kept that promise

  1713. 2,000 years later

  1714. I never forgot it

  1715. I kept that promise

  1716. I sent my son

1717. he died upon the cross

  1718. George

  1719. follow me

  1720. with your ears

  1721. and George

  1722. as you follow me

  1723. with your ears

1724. listen to what I say

  1725. that I tell you

  1726. that my son died

  1727. on the cross

  1728. for you

  1729. that when my son

  1730. died upon the cross

  1731. you are seeing

  1732. the perfect picture

  1733. of me

  1734. and of my love

  1735. and of my concern

  1736. for you

1737. you see that I desire

  1738. to bless you

1739. that I will bring you

  1740. to the new heaven

  1741. and the new earth

  1742. and that when you

1743. merely reach up your hand

1744. not that you can reach

  1745. to me

1746. but I can reach down

  1747. to you

  1748. that I will reach

  1749. my son's hand

  1750. will reach to you

  1751. and his hand

1752. will never let you go

  1753. and that I don't

  1754. you do not know

  1755. George

1756. whether you will be rich

  1757. you do not know

1758. whether you will be successful

  1759. you do not know

  1760. any of these things

  1761. but you can know

  1762. that when you put

1763. your hand up to mine

  1764. and Jesus reaches down

  1765. and grabs it

  1766. and he has died

1767. on the cross for you

  1768. he is

  1769. his righteousness

  1770. covers you

1771. he will never let you go

  1772. and you will be

  1773. in the new heaven

  1774. and the new earth

  1775. and I love you

1776. and I care for you

  1777. I love you

1778. and I care for you

  1779. follow me

  1780. with your ears

  1781. let God be God

  1782. listen to his word

  1783. from cover to cover

  1784. follow me

  1785. with your ears

1786. I will never let you go

  1787. please stand

  1788. Father help us

1789. to listen to your word

1790. help us to be honest

  1791. with ourselves

  1792. Father

  1793. when your word

  1794. bugs us

  1795. and it irritates us

  1796. but Father

  1797. help us to have

  1798. our bugging

  1799. and our irritation

  1800. come to you

1801. help us to lay it

  1802. at your feet

  1803. humbly

1804. help us to let you

  1805. be you

  1806. to let you choose

  1807. the words

  1808. you want to choose

  1809. and

  1810. because it's your word

  1811. and Father

1812. help us to follow you

  1813. with our ears

1814. help us to follow you

  1815. with our ears

  1816. Father

  1817. we so desperately

  1818. want to know

  1819. the future

  1820. we so desperately

  1821. want to be able

  1822. to describe

  1823. what we see

  1824. we so desperately

  1825. want to be able

  1826. to do that

  1827. Father

  1828. but we cannot

  1829. but you have said

  1830. you will never

  1831. leave us

  1832. or forsake us

  1833. that your word

  1834. will lead us

  1835. to yourself

  1836. that your word

  1837. and your son

  1838. will bless us

  1839. so Father

1840. help us to follow you

  1841. with our ears

  1842. follow you

  1843. with our ears

  1844. Father

1845. if there is one here

  1846. who has not yet

  1847. put their trust

  1848. in you

  1849. Father

1850. may this be the Sunday

  1851. where they call out

  1852. to you

  1853. and say

  1854. Jesus be my Savior

  1855. and my Lord

1856. for what you have done

1857. for me on the cross

  1858. be my Savior

  1859. and my Lord

  1860. Father

  1861. make us disciples

  1862. of Jesus

  1863. who are gripped

  1864. by the gospel

  1865. learning to be

  1866. to follow you

  1867. with our ears

1868. as you free us up

  1869. so we will live

  1870. for your glory

1871. and all this we ask

1872. in the name of Jesus

  1873. your Son

  1874. and our Savior

  1875. Amen

  1876. the Son

  1877. and Your Amen

  1878. A

  1879. Man
