  1. Lord, I pray that you would write in our hearts your law, that we would be inclined to serve you, to love you with all of our being.

  2. And Lord, as we hear your word, would you open our hearts to know your word and to remember your word. In Jesus' name, amen.

  3. You may be seated.

  4. So, many people think that in order to be a Christian, you need to give up your autonomy and your sense of personal identity.

  5. And it makes it quite uncomfortable when we think of laws that really dig deep inside of us, that shape all of our life.

  6. And so, is that true? Is that what the Bible is saying about Christianity?

  7. Is it really something that removes our autonomy, our sense of identity?

  8. Well, if you have your Bibles with you, we'll turn to Exodus, chapter 20, and we'll look at verses 1 to 3.

    Exodus 20 chapter mention

  9. So, Exodus, chapter 20, verses 1 to 3.

    Exodus 20:1–3

  10. And God spoke all these words, saying,

  11. I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

  12. You shall have no other gods before me.

  13. See, when we read this in our culture, and even some Christians might, you know, go into this line of thinking after walking with the Lord for a long time,

  14. we might hear the words when we read this,

  15. And God spoke all these words, saying,

  16. I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land to oppress you and to make you my slave.

  17. See, when we think of the story here, doesn't it seem like, you know, God is saving a people,

  18. he's bringing them out of Egypt so that they can be God's slaves?

  19. See, weren't they just doing what the Pharaoh told them, and now they're going to go do what God told them?

  20. Like, isn't that a bit strange?

  21. Isn't that like a bit of a contradiction?

  22. Well, it's hard to accept a religion and a worldview in our day and age that invades our whole life.

  23. When we tend to think in terms of simply adding a little bit of this and a little bit of that to our lives,

  24. maybe a little bit of church going, or maybe a little bit of yoga, or a little bit of prayer to angels,

  25. or a little bit of New Age, it won't hurt if we just do a little bit at a time, right?

  26. As long as we do everything in moderation, and we try to keep a good balance.

  27. See, this is today's Canadian philosophy of pluralism.

  28. We don't want to give ourselves up entirely to something.

  29. And when we hear words like this in the First Commandment, when it says,

  30. you shall have no other gods before me, that seems kind of un-Canadian.

  31. That seems a bit too much, a bit extreme, that we should say no to all the other religions and say yes to this God.

  32. Why should we do that to this God?

  33. Why should we say yes to this God only?

  34. So the question is, why does God command such strict allegiance to him?

  35. Why can't he be like my co-worker, who, you know, he's so suave, and so, you know, he's so outgoing,

  36. and just does a little bit of everything, and seems to be enjoying life a lot.

  37. Why does God have to be so strict?

  38. He shall only have one God.

  39. Well, let's look again at this text.

  40. Let's see what it says.

  41. So the commandment says, you shall have no other gods before me.

  42. And to understand that, just a bit of an aside, if you've grown in the church for a long time,

  43. you grew up in the church and you heard the Ten Commandments said over and over again,

  44. you might have seen the plaque on the side with the Ten Commandments.

  45. Oftentimes, we think of the Ten Commandments out of their context.

  46. We think of them as rules.

  47. This is what you must do to be in relationship with God.

  48. So let's look at the context.

  49. If you can, turn with me to Exodus 19, and we'll read verses 4 to 9.

  50. So Exodus 19, verses 4 to 9.

    Exodus 19:4–9

  51. So God here is commanding.

  52. Moses to speak to Israel these words.

  53. And so we continue.

  54. So Moses came and called the elders of the people and set before them all the words that the Lord had commanded him.

  55. All the people answered together and said,

  56. All that the Lord has spoken, we will do.

  57. And Moses reported the words of the people to the Lord.

  58. And the Lord said to Moses,

  59. Behold, I am coming to you in a thick cloud,

  60. that the people may hear when I speak with you,

  61. and may also believe you forever.

  62. So in reading this,

  63. we get a bit of a glimpse that there's a relationship going on.

  64. God saved the people from slavery,

  65. 400 years of slavery,

  66. and now he wants to give them a new life.

  67. So if we can have our first point.

  68. Second point, actually.

  69. Thanks.

  70. God's intention through Israel's salvation

  71. is to create a new human race

  72. who will live in freedom

  73. like in the Garden of Eden.

  74. So this is what's happening here.

  75. And let's look back at verse 4 to 9.

  76. Here it says,

  77. You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians

  78. and how I bore you on eagles' wings

  79. and brought you to myself.

  80. So God carried them

  81. almost like an eagle would carry the little baby eagles

  82. on their wings, on their back,

  83. and carry them to safety.

  84. And he says that he brought you to myself.

  85. God brought Israel to himself.

  86. And now therefore,

  87. if you will indeed obey my voice

  88. and keep my covenant,

  89. you shall be my treasured possession

  90. among all peoples.

  91. So just pause here.

  92. The word treasured possession

  93. is not God saying,

  94. Israel, you will be my little sweetheart.

  95. You will be my little cupcake.

  96. Treasured possession.

  97. It's actually saying

  98. something a little bit deeper than that.

  99. In the ancient days,

  100. the word treasured possession

  101. is something that a god

  102. would say to the king of a nation.

  103. It would say to that king

  104. in having a relationship

  105. that the king would be personally chosen,

  106. blessed, and protected by God.

  107. So it's interesting that

  108. this is the language that's communicated

  109. between a god and a king.

  110. And here we have

  111. God,

  112. the Lord,

  113. Yahweh,

  114. who's speaking to Israel.

  115. So Israel is like a king,

  116. essentially,

  117. what it's trying to say.

  118. And what do kings do

  119. in the ancient days?

  120. They rule.

  121. They have dominion over the earth.

  122. And so if that's starting

  123. to ring a bell,

  124. that's a good thing.

  125. This is language

  126. that is kind of communicating

  127. that we're going back

  128. to the Garden of Eden.

  129. We're going to have

  130. dominion over the earth.

  131. And then kingdom of priests.

  132. The kingdom of priests

  133. refers to those

  134. who serve in the presence

  135. of God

  136. and the holy nation.

  137. God calls them

  138. a holy nation.

  139. And that's

  140. for those who carry out

  141. God's likeness

  142. or God's image

  143. in all the earth.

  144. So we see that

  145. God's relationship with them

  146. is quite special.

  147. God's intention

  148. through Israel's salvation

  149. is to create

  150. a new human race

  151. who will live in freedom

  152. like in the Garden of Eden.

  153. If I can have

  154. the second point, Andrew.

  155. So false gods

  156. are selected

  157. by broken people

  158. because they claim

  159. to bring power

  160. and success.

  161. God mercifully

  162. gathers broken people

  163. to restore them

  164. to life.

  165. So there's a big

  166. difference here.

  167. The way that

  168. false gods operate

  169. and the way that

  170. the God of Israel,

  171. the creator of all

  172. the earth,

  173. operates.

  174. And so God

  175. commands his people

  176. to not have other gods

  177. because if they do that,

  178. they'll go back

  179. into slavery.

  180. And it's tempting

  181. because they promise

  182. success

  183. and they promise power.

  184. But the God of Israel,

  185. God mercifully

  186. gathers broken people

  187. to restore them

  188. to life.

  189. So we see here

  190. that God

  191. gives Israel

  192. a similar mission

  193. as he gave Adam.

  194. And I just want

  195. to point out

  196. one more thing here.

  197. It says,

  198. Now therefore,

  199. if you will

  200. indeed obey my voice

  201. and keep my covenant,

  202. you shall be

  203. my treasured possession

  204. among all peoples,

  205. for all the earth

  206. is mine.

  207. For all the earth

  208. is mine.

  209. If you remember,

  210. we just did a series

  211. in Genesis,

  212. one to the beginning

  213. of chapter 12.

  214. And in Genesis 1,

  215. the great commission

  216. that is in Genesis 1,

  217. or we call it

  218. the creation mandate,

  219. is that human beings

  220. are to be fruitful

  221. and multiply

  222. and fill the earth.

  223. And here,

  224. God is gathering a people.

  225. He's giving them a land

  226. so that they can be

  227. image bearers

  228. in his land.

  229. But his plan

  230. is beyond the land.

  231. He says,

  232. All the earth

  233. is mine.

  234. So God's plan

  235. is to fill the earth.

  236. Again,

  237. just like in Genesis 1.

  238. Okay,

  239. so we have this

  240. relationship happening

  241. between Israel and God,

  242. and now God wants them

  243. to obey him.

  244. And that may not seem

  245. to sit very easily with us.

  246. So maybe an analogy

  247. will help.

  248. A few months ago,

  249. I got engaged.

  250. And I promise

  251. I don't read the whole Bible

  252. in light of marriage,

  253. but this is something

  254. that I think is relevant,

  255. is that

  256. before we got engaged,

  257. we had a conversation

  258. something like,

  259. I'm just paraphrasing here,

  260. and this is not

  261. word for word,

  262. but, you know,

  263. we share a mutual affection

  264. for one another.

  265. And, you know,

  266. we love Jesus,

  267. and we want to serve

  268. Jesus together

  269. for the rest of our lives.

  270. And we both agree on this,

  271. and this is likely

  272. to look like

  273. vocational ministry.

  274. Are you okay with that?

  275. Yes, I am.

  276. Okay.

  277. And then we talk about,

  278. you know,

  279. I asked Renee

  280. if she would want

  281. to marry me,

  282. and she said yes.

  283. Okay.

  284. So we have this

  285. illustration.

  286. Let's look at

  287. verses 4 to 6 again

  288. from chapter 19.

  289. You yourselves

  290. have seen

  291. what I did

  292. to the Egyptians,

  293. and how I bore you

  294. on eagles' wings

  295. and brought you

  296. to myself.

  297. Now therefore,

  298. if you will indeed

  299. obey my voice

  300. and keep my covenant,

  301. you shall be

  302. my treasured possession

  303. among all peoples,

  304. for all the earth

  305. is mine.

  306. And you shall be to me

  307. a kingdom of priests

  308. and a holy nation.

  309. These are the words

  310. that you shall speak

  311. to the people of Israel.

  312. So we see here

  313. that God is having

  314. this relationship.

  315. He's establishing

  316. a clarity

  317. about what the relationship

  318. is going to look like

  319. with Israel.

  320. Okay.

  321. So God is going

  322. to be king,

  323. and Israel is going

  324. to be the holy nation,

  325. the kingdom of priests.

  326. And so they're

  327. establishing clarity here

  328. and expectations,

  329. what this relationship

  330. will look like.

  331. Okay,

  332. and then we continue.

  333. What is Israel's response?

  334. Let's look at verse 8.

  335. It says,

  336. all the people,

  337. all of Israel,

  338. answered together

  339. and said in one voice,

  340. all that the Lord

  341. has spoken,

  342. we will do.

  343. And Moses reported

  344. these words

  345. of the people

  346. to the Lord.

  347. So we see God

  348. makes a proposal

  349. to Israel.

  350. Israel says,

  351. yes,

  352. we will do it.

  353. We will be

  354. your people

  355. and you will be

  356. our God.

  357. And so

  358. this is the

  359. kind of engagement

  360. picture,

  361. and then we move

  362. to Exodus 20.

  363. So let's turn there,

  364. Exodus 20,

  365. and we're on

  366. the wedding day,

  367. so to speak.

  368. So let's read here.

  369. And God spoke

  370. all these words saying,

  371. I am the Lord,

  372. your God,

  373. who brought you

  374. out of the land

  375. of Egypt,

  376. out of the house

  377. of slavery.

  378. So just pause here

  379. in verse 2.

  380. We see that God

  381. is mentioning

  382. the two people

  383. who are part

  384. of this relationship.

  385. It says,

  386. I am the Lord,

  387. your God,

  388. and you,

  389. referring to Israel.

  390. So he's communicating

  391. this is what's

  392. going to happen.

  393. This is what I did.

  394. This is our relationship.

  395. This is the nature

  396. of our relationship.

  397. And this is quite

  398. similar to when

  399. on my wedding day

  400. with Renee,

  401. I'm going to say,

  402. I, Jonathan,

  403. take you,

  404. Renee,

  405. to be my lawfully

  406. wedded wife

  407. and vice versa.

  408. And so we're

  409. establishing that covenant.

  410. We're saying,

  411. these are the parties

  412. that are involved

  413. in this relationship.

  414. But now back

  415. to the text here.

  416. In verse 3,

  417. we see,

  418. you shall have

  419. no other gods

  420. before me.

  421. And this is a stipulation.

  422. This is God's expectation

  423. in the relationship.

  424. And on our wedding day,

  425. we're going to say

  426. something similar like,

  427. for better,

  428. for worse,

  429. for richer,

  430. for poorer,

  431. in sickness

  432. and in health.

  433. And those are the promises,

  434. the vows that we're making

  435. to one another

  436. to establish our relationship.

  437. So,

  438. this text is talking about

  439. having no other gods

  440. before me.

  441. And this is a stipulation.

  442. But what does God mean

  443. exactly by

  444. no other gods

  445. before me?

  446. Like,

  447. does he mean

  448. instead of me?

  449. Or does he mean

  450. ahead of me?

  451. Or next to me?

  452. Think of it this way.

  453. you who are husbands

  454. in the room,

  455. if your wife

  456. would come to you

  457. at the end of the day

  458. and would say,

  459. honey,

  460. there's this man

  461. who,

  462. you know,

  463. that I met at work

  464. or at the mall

  465. or something

  466. and he wants to be

  467. my husband as well,

  468. would he be okay

  469. if he was

  470. my husband

  471. instead of you?

  472. And the answer

  473. would be no.

  474. Could he be

  475. my husband

  476. ahead of you?

  477. No.

  478. Could he be

  479. my husband

  480. next to you?

  481. No.

  482. So the answer is no.

  483. There is no other

  484. husband in the picture.

  485. I am your husband.

  486. You are my wife.

  487. We are together.

  488. And this is our covenant.

  489. This is what we've established.

  490. Okay.

  491. So,

  492. okay,

  493. so we're talking

  494. about gods here.

  495. And in our modern age,

  496. like,

  497. we understand

  498. that there were

  499. gods back then.

  500. And there are

  501. other religions today.

  502. But, like,

  503. how does this work

  504. in our day and age?

  505. Other gods

  506. before me.

  507. and in our

  508. relationship

  509. with God.

  510. Well,

  511. there are all sorts

  512. of different gods

  513. these days

  514. that we don't

  515. necessarily call gods.

  516. But we refer

  517. to them as gods

  518. because they have

  519. a certain power

  520. and a certain promise.

  521. Whether it's

  522. the god

  523. in our modern day

  524. of success

  525. that if we do

  526. certain exercises

  527. or we do

  528. certain

  529. vows

  530. to certain

  531. people,

  532. we follow

  533. certain rich people,

  534. we will be rich

  535. as well,

  536. we will be successful

  537. or the god

  538. of sexuality

  539. or the god

  540. of power,

  541. of influence,

  542. or of convenience.

  543. And we live

  544. by them

  545. and God

  546. calls us

  547. to a strict

  548. devotion to him

  549. for our good.

  550. So,

  551. you might be thinking

  552. despite the fact

  553. that God says,

  554. or the Bible says,

  555. that we are

  556. being saved

  557. from slavery

  558. into freedom,

  559. it still doesn't

  560. really make sense

  561. that freedom

  562. involves following

  563. commandments.

  564. I'm not too sure

  565. I follow.

  566. Okay,

  567. so let's just

  568. look at this.

  569. Maybe I can give

  570. an analogy

  571. that will help.

  572. If I were to

  573. babysit one of my

  574. little nephews,

  575. I were to bring

  576. him to the park,

  577. we would arrive

  578. at the park

  579. and we're there

  580. to go play

  581. in the park,

  582. right?

  583. So,

  584. we get there

  585. and I would say,

  586. okay,

  587. little nephew,

  588. don't run

  589. in the rose bush,

  590. watch for the beehive,

  591. don't get bit

  592. by the dog,

  593. et cetera,

  594. et cetera,

  595. right?

  596. Because we're there

  597. to play in the park,

  598. we're there

  599. to enjoy the park

  600. and we won't enjoy

  601. the park

  602. if we have to go

  603. to the hospital

  604. because the bees

  605. and the dogs

  606. bit you

  607. and all that,

  608. right?

  609. So,

  610. for maximum performance

  611. in the park,

  612. we want to have fun,

  613. we want to take advantage

  614. of these 30 minutes

  615. that we're going

  616. to spend in the park

  617. or maybe hour,

  618. let's just make sure

  619. we play in the park

  620. and we don't go

  621. outside of the park

  622. where it's dangerous.

  623. Okay,

  624. good.

  625. And we're good?

  626. Okay,

  627. so,

  628. what this is saying

  629. is that

  630. when we sin,

  631. we sort of lose touch

  632. with the purpose

  633. of life.

  634. We sort of lose

  635. touch with the purpose

  636. of life

  637. and we need

  638. proper boundaries

  639. because our inner explorer

  640. will be drawn

  641. to all sorts

  642. of other things

  643. around the park

  644. or in the peripheries

  645. of life

  646. that just want

  647. to destroy us.

  648. And so,

  649. here's the point

  650. of God giving us

  651. commandments.

  652. God provides us

  653. moral perimeters

  654. to live by

  655. but the question remains,

  656. what is the purpose

  657. of life?

  658. Can we have the next

  659. slide,

  660. Andrew?

  661. We like to think

  662. we can create

  663. our own purpose

  664. in life

  665. apart from God's will

  666. but we will run

  667. away from his commandments

  668. towards our

  669. re-enslavement.

  670. We like to think

  671. we can create

  672. our own purpose

  673. in life

  674. apart from God's will

  675. but we run

  676. away from his commandments

  677. towards re-enslavement.

  678. A little while back

  679. I watched a video

  680. on email,

  681. it's one of those

  682. chain emails

  683. that gets sent around

  684. and I try to watch them

  685. because some of them

  686. are actually really funny.

  687. Anyway,

  688. this video,

  689. there was a cheetah

  690. who was stuck

  691. in this life trap.

  692. I think it was the paw

  693. that was stuck

  694. in the trap

  695. and the cat

  696. was just going everywhere

  697. and there were

  698. these two forest rangers

  699. or safari park rangers

  700. that were trying

  701. to free the cheetah

  702. and they had these poles

  703. and they were just

  704. kind of holding

  705. around the neck,

  706. holding on this leg

  707. until they can get

  708. the trap open

  709. so that the cat

  710. can be free.

  711. Now,

  712. I was thinking like,

  713. oh my goodness,

  714. this cat is angry.

  715. This cat is going to like

  716. shred these guys

  717. with the claws

  718. and these guys

  719. are done with

  720. if the cat is set free.

  721. Like,

  722. what are they doing?

  723. And so anyway,

  724. they get closer and closer

  725. and as soon as

  726. they get the trap open,

  727. the cat is ready

  728. to be released

  729. except that they still

  730. have the poles

  731. around their necks

  732. and I'm just,

  733. I'm kind of losing it.

  734. And anyway,

  735. the cat is just furious

  736. and they finally get

  737. the poles

  738. with the little straps

  739. around off the neck,

  740. off the paw

  741. and we're ready

  742. for action.

  743. And I would think

  744. that people would try

  745. to poke the cat

  746. and say like,

  747. go away,

  748. go away,

  749. don't attack us.

  750. But the reality is

  751. that they didn't need

  752. to do that.

  753. The cheetah just ran

  754. for dear life.

  755. The cheetah went

  756. and,

  757. well,

  758. the video didn't really

  759. show what the cheetah did

  760. but I assume

  761. that the cheetah went

  762. to go be a cheetah again.

  763. You know,

  764. go around the pond,

  765. drink some water,

  766. eat some food,

  767. do a bit of hunting,

  768. hang around with other cats

  769. and that's kind of

  770. what I assumed

  771. out of the picture.

  772. But here's why

  773. I bring up this illustration.

  774. Unlike the cheetah,

  775. we don't run towards

  776. doing what God

  777. frees us to do.

  778. See,

  779. if it was just us,

  780. we would just be set free

  781. and then we'd probably

  782. stick around,

  783. you know,

  784. smell the trap

  785. and hang around

  786. with the forest rangers.

  787. The Bible uses words

  788. like enslavement,

  789. modern terms,

  790. we talk about addiction.

  791. For people who are

  792. walking to be set free

  793. from different addictions,

  794. whether it's from alcohol

  795. or drugs

  796. or sex

  797. or money,

  798. it's not as simple

  799. as just being told

  800. that you're set free.

  801. We always run back.

  802. We have these

  803. desires within us

  804. that are shaped

  805. by things of this world

  806. and God wants

  807. to set us free

  808. from the things

  809. that captivate us,

  810. things that hold us

  811. in bondage.

  812. Okay,

  813. so in the biblical narrative

  814. as we've seen so far,

  815. the problem is that

  816. the Israelites'

  817. freedom from Egypt

  818. is not sufficient.

  819. They're saved by God

  820. but they still need

  821. to know

  822. how to live.

  823. And so,

  824. can we have

  825. the next slide?

  826. Is there a slide

  827. before that?

  828. Okay,

  829. I might have missed it.

  830. So,

  831. I'll just say it.

  832. God's command,

  833. God's commandments

  834. reflect his character

  835. whereby only God

  836. can fulfill the law.

  837. The question is not

  838. what will help me

  839. but who will help me?

  840. See,

  841. in the nature

  842. of God's command,

  843. God gives Israel

  844. his commandments

  845. and Israel is not,

  846. you know,

  847. better than everyone else.

  848. God saves them

  849. because he's merciful,

  850. not because they're good.

  851. And that is a picture,

  852. Israel is a picture

  853. of the whole world

  854. that whatever Israel does,

  855. we would,

  856. anyone who's outside

  857. of Israel

  858. would do the same.

  859. Israel sins,

  860. anyone else would sin

  861. at God's commandments.

  862. So,

  863. God gives us commandments

  864. that reflect him.

  865. They kind of articulate

  866. his character

  867. for us

  868. because his commandments

  869. are holy

  870. and they're so holy

  871. that only God

  872. can fulfill them.

  873. So,

  874. the question is not

  875. what will help me

  876. but who will help me?

  877. See,

  878. we are creatures

  879. who are driven

  880. by desire,

  881. by love

  882. and we find those things

  883. in things that don't

  884. fulfill us

  885. and the Bible

  886. will make the claim

  887. that because we're

  888. made in the image

  889. of God,

  890. only God

  891. can fulfill us,

  892. only God

  893. can satisfy us,

  894. only God

  895. because God

  896. is personal

  897. and,

  898. you know,

  899. art is not,

  900. sciences are not,

  901. mathematics are not,

  902. those things are great.

  903. They can be

  904. false gods

  905. who will drive us

  906. into slavery

  907. and make us more empty

  908. unless God

  909. is there to save us.

  910. So,

  911. God's commandments

  912. reflect his character

  913. whereby only he

  914. can fulfill the law.

  915. The question is not

  916. what will help me

  917. but who will help me?

  918. Now,

  919. what do I mean by this?

  920. When we look at the law,

  921. we look beyond the law

  922. to the law giver

  923. and that is God.

  924. God is the law giver

  925. and we look to a God

  926. of grace

  927. who sets us free

  928. and gives us parameters

  929. to stay free

  930. to continue in freedom

  931. and so God's laws

  932. are grace to us

  933. yet we can't

  934. follow through.

  935. We can't do them perfectly.

  936. We still fall short

  937. and so for this reason

  938. we need a Messiah.

  939. We need a God man,

  940. someone who is a human

  941. yet has God's zeal

  942. for holiness

  943. and so God sends

  944. his son Jesus

  945. for us

  946. to live

  947. the life

  948. that we should have lived

  949. but we couldn't

  950. because we are

  951. too sinful.

  952. Jesus comes,

  953. he lives a perfect life

  954. and he walks perfectly

  955. in holiness

  956. before God

  957. fulfilling all of his commandments

  958. and he also taught us

  959. the first commandment

  960. that we're looking at today

  961. though the words here say

  962. you shall have no other gods

  963. before me.

  964. Andrew,

  965. can we have the next slide?

  966. Jesus taught us

  967. the most important commandment

  968. is hear Israel

  969. the Lord our God

  970. the Lord is one

  971. and you shall have

  972. no other God

  973. or you shall love

  974. the Lord your God

  975. with all your heart

  976. and with all your soul

  977. and with all your mind

  978. and with all your strength.

  979. See,

  980. Jesus

  981. having lived

  982. this life

  983. he

  984. also

  985. taught this commandment

  986. but taught

  987. the positive implication

  988. of the commandment

  989. to love God

  990. not just avoid

  991. other gods

  992. but to

  993. have God

  994. that's what the commandment

  995. is implied

  996. to love God

  997. and so

  998. how can we love God?

  999. Well,

1000. we just look at him

  1001. we think of God

1002. we think of his acts

1003. we think of what he has done

  1004. for us

  1005. see God has done

  1006. everything possible

  1007. for us

1008. to be in a right relationship

  1009. with him

  1010. when we could not

  1011. God does it

  1012. and God

  1013. provides

  1014. pardon through his son

  1015. on the cross

1016. that when we believe in him

1017. we are forgiven our sins

1018. and he also gives us

  1019. power to live

  1020. a life

  1021. a new life

  1022. that reflects

  1023. his holiness

  1024. he pours out

  1025. his Holy Spirit

  1026. to those who trust

  1027. in Jesus

1028. and so this is our hope

  1029. the hope is that

1030. Jesus has done it all

1031. that we look to Jesus

  1032. we fall in love

  1033. with Jesus

1034. because he loved us first

  1035. we follow Jesus

  1036. because of the power

  1037. that he

  1038. imparts

  1039. to us

  1040. so now if you're

  1041. a Christian

  1042. here

  1043. and you might be

  1044. wondering why

  1045. we teach the

  1046. Ten Commandments

  1047. we just started

  1048. a series today

  1049. we're going to go

1050. for the next ten weeks

1051. looking at the Ten Commandments

1052. and you might be wondering

  1053. like why

  1054. the Ten Commandments

  1055. like I'm a spiritual

  1056. Christian

  1057. I'm not a

  1058. law Christian

  1059. Andrew can we have

  1060. the next slide

1061. can we say this together

  1062. whoever keeps

  1063. his commandments

  1064. abides in God

  1065. and God

  1066. in him

  1067. but

  1068. sorry

  1069. okay

  1070. what this is saying

  1071. is that

  1072. when we're in a relationship

  1073. with God

  1074. when we love God

  1075. we reflect him

1076. and by this we know

1077. that when we follow him

  1078. that his spirit

  1079. is the spirit

  1080. who is working

  1081. in and through us

  1082. and so to be

  1083. a spiritual Christian

1084. is to be a Christian

  1085. who follows God

  1086. who follows his laws

1087. not to be in right

  1088. relationship with him

1089. but because we're in right

  1090. relationship with him

1091. so I would invite you

  1092. to stand

  1093. at this point

1094. and we're going to have

  1095. a closing prayer

  1096. so please stand

  1097. so some of you

  1098. might not have given

1099. your life to Jesus yet

  1100. but

  1101. you want to

  1102. there's something

  1103. today that

  1104. really interests you

  1105. this could be

  1106. a conversion prayer

  1107. for you

  1108. and

  1109. either way

  1110. this is a prayer

  1111. for Christians

  1112. as we walk

  1113. with God

  1114. on a daily basis

1115. so let's pray this together

1116. or let's say this together

  1117. Lord

  1118. though your word

  1119. commands me

  1120. to love you

  1121. with all my being

  1122. you know

  1123. the propensity

  1124. of my heart

  1125. is to leave you

  1126. out of my life

  1127. in your mercy

  1128. write your law

  1129. upon my heart

  1130. turn me to Jesus

  1131. the one

  1132. whom the law

  1133. directs me

  1134. to worship

  1135. pour out

  1136. your Holy Spirit

  1137. upon

  1138. so that I may

  1139. be inclined

  1140. to keep it

  1141. all the days

  1142. of my life

  1143. through Jesus Christ

  1144. our Lord

  1145. Amen

  1146. just remaining standing

  1147. Father we're

  1148. thankful for

  1149. your grace

  1150. that you've shown

  1151. Lord you've given us

  1152. your son

  1153. so that we may

  1154. be made right

  1155. with you

  1156. so that we may

  1157. continue in this

  1158. commission

  1159. that you've created

  1160. human beings

1161. to be a part of

  1162. to fill the earth

  1163. to be creative

  1164. and to do

  1165. your will

  1166. and to reflect

  1167. you

  1168. and to enjoy

  1169. you

  1170. Lord would you

  1171. teach us that

  1172. today

  1173. would you teach

  1174. us that

  1175. in Jesus name

  1176. Amen
