  1. Father, you are holy and your name is holy. And as we are here gathered this morning,

  2. Lord, would you give us a deeper awareness, a deeper sense of your holiness and how your name

  3. is set apart. Lord, would you be glorified in this time where we hear your word. And as your word

  4. is read and goes forth, Father, would you allow your word to be planted as a seed

  5. to bear much fruit. In Jesus' name, amen.

  6. One of my most vivid memories of being in kindergarten was when some of my friends and I

  7. got into a fight. And it wasn't like we weren't fighting like that, but we were fighting with

  8. our words. And this looked like saying to one another, my dad can beat up your dad. And then

  9. the other kid would go, no, my dad is stronger than your dad. He can take your dad down.

  10. And we go back and forth for quite a while. And what was happening there is that for the

  11. first time in our lives, we realized that we are not the most important person in the world.

  12. There are other very, very important people in this world. And because we grew up in the

  13. house, you know, growing up and we're nurtured and we're loved by our parents. And we finally

  14. arrived to the conclusion when we get to school that these people as well got loved by the,

  15. received love from their parents and so forth. And so in feeling this threat that we're not

  16. the most important person in the world, we try to call the strong arm, the strong man to take

  17. down what is threatening us, what is causing this fear in our life. And so in preparing this sermon,

  18. I was wondering, is this how we are treating God? Is that how we relate to God? Is he the strong arm

  19. that's going to come and defeat what threatens our preference, our image of the good life?

  20. So if you can turn to your Bibles, we'll look at Deuteronomy chapter 5. And we're going to look

    Deuteronomy 5 chapter mention

  21. just through the beginning of the Ten Commandments and going all the way down

  22. to the Third Commandment. So starting in verse 6 in chapter 5.

  23. It says,

  24. I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

  25. You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image or any likeness

  26. of anything that is in heaven above or that is on the earth beneath or that is in the water under the

  27. earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God,

  28. visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate

  29. me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.

  30. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who

  31. takes his name in vain. So here we are in a series where we're looking at the Ten Commandments.

  32. We've gone through the First Commandment, which talks about the importance of God in our lives.

  33. It talks about now that we're in this relationship with God. God has saved these people from Egypt.

  34. He saved them from slavery to himself. He saved them from slavery to freedom.

  35. And now, in order to preserve that freedom of what it really means to be human,

  36. it means to have this relationship with God. God is the most important in our life.

  37. We direct our lives through this compass, which is the reality that God is the God of all creation,

  38. and he's the God who loves us and who has saved us. And so that's the First Commandment.

  39. Second Commandment, now we need to have a right perception of God. We don't create our own image

  40. of God. We don't create God in our likeness. God has created us in his likeness. And so we want

  41. to preserve his essence. God is a God who is transcendent and cannot be contained. And now

  42. we're at the Third Commandment today, which talks about God's name, taking God's name in vain.

  43. And I think what we're going to look at is that if we're going to take God's name in vain,

  44. his identity is what is not necessarily at stake, but that's what we're looking at here when we're

  45. thinking of God's name. So in the context of a relationship, we see here that Israel has a new

  46. relationship with God. God is their God. They are his people. And so they're taking on a new name.

  47. The God of Israel is saving them, and he's sharing his identity with them.

  48. Just yesterday, I went to a wedding. My cousin got married, and it was very exciting. Great ceremony

  49. and everything. We had a wonderful time. And what happened there is they came together. They

  50. decided to come together in a covenant that will last until their death. And that means that their

  51. old relationships, like their families, their immediate families with their parents,

  52. those are not the sources of their identity anymore. They're coming together to form a new identity.

  53. Okay, so this is very similar to the image here of Israel and God, is that they're coming together

  54. to form a new identity. And in the structure of relationship, God is the king. God is the creator of

  55. all things, and he created humanity in his image. So they are the ones who are going to reflect God's character.

  56. Another example of that is just a few years ago, I moved to Montreal to do my undergraduate studies in music.

  57. And the students, we loved to just, you know, explore the city a bit. It was a very lively city.

  58. And part of being a Montrealer is that you love the Montreal Canadiens. And I found myself loving the Montreal Canadiens and just kind of being part of the crowd and everything, right?

  59. And a lot of my friends, because it's an international school, we had a lot of American friends who came, and they've never watched hockey in their lives.

  60. But all of a sudden, they start coming out to the place where people watch hockey games. And we enjoyed the hockey games together.

  61. And they started liking hockey and started liking the Montreal Canadiens, because that's what it's like to be a Montrealer. You like the Canadians.

  62. And so in that sense as well, we kind of enter into this tribe or this family, any type of group of people to share an identity with.

  63. And now Israel, they're coming together under God and sharing His identity and becoming more like Him.

  64. So this commandment is talking about not taking the Lord's name in vain.

  65. So I'll just read it again in verse 11.

  66. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.

  67. And what it's talking about here in vain?

  68. It's talking about just emptiness or futility.

  69. We're reducing God's name to something that it's not.

  70. Or even so, we're talking about God in a way that doesn't reflect His reputation.

  71. And so not taking it in vain is not really about how we understand in vain, how we understand futility, or how we understand a bad reputation.

  72. It's starting at God's reputation.

  73. We're starting with God's holiness and God's intentions, God's will in life.

  74. So a good example that we see in the Bible is found in Leviticus.

  75. I'm not going to read it.

  76. It's very short.

  77. It's talking about making oaths.

  78. When people come together in the courts and they want to find out what's true.

  79. Did this person actually kill so-and-so?

  80. And somebody would, if they want this person to be found guilty, they might use the Lord's name in vain and saying,

  81. I swear to the Lord, I'm telling the truth, and then say, this person is guilty.

  82. Okay, so that's taking the Lord's name in vain.

  83. But there's also other examples.

  84. And just to see maybe a positive example of taking the Lord in an oath is found in Joshua.

  85. So I'm going to turn to Joshua just for a second.

  86. If you have your Bibles, you can turn there as well.

  87. It's in Joshua chapter 2.

    Joshua 2 chapter mention

  88. And we'll look in verse 8.

  89. So here the Israelites are coming to the land.

  90. They're coming to Jericho.

  91. And they're about to take possession of Jericho.

  92. And so they enter into this house where there is Rahab, the prostitute.

  93. And Rahab is asking them to have mercy on her and her family.

  94. So here we are, verse 8.

  95. Before the men lay down, she came up to them on the roof and said to them,

  96. I know that the Lord has given you the land, and that the fear of you has fallen upon us,

  97. and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you.

  98. For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt,

  99. and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan,

  100. to Sihon and Og, whom you have devoted to destruction.

  101. And as soon as we heard it, our hearts melted,

  102. and there was no spirit left in any man because of you.

  103. For the Lord your God, he is God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath.

  104. Now then, and here it is,

  105. please swear to me by the Lord that, as I have dealt kindly with you,

  106. you also will deal kindly with my father's house,

  107. and give me a sure sign that you will save alive my father and mother, my brothers and sisters.

  108. So just here we have a picture of Rahab.

  109. In the culture, she doesn't have much standing.

  110. She is a prostitute, and therefore she has no way to protect herself.

  111. And so she's calling on the Lord of the Israelites,

  112. the God who cleared the waters from Egypt.

  113. Egypt was the most powerful nation at the time,

  114. and so she's calling on them because she knows that the Lord is powerful.

  115. She mentioned how she knows the testimonies of the Lord

  116. and how he devoted to destruction of the other kings.

  117. And so her people and herself, they were afraid, they were frightened,

  118. because God is a powerful God.

  119. So here's the first point, if we can have that on the slide.

  120. By faith, I enter a relationship with God and humbly share in his identity.

  121. So, so far, we've seen that when we see God's testimonies,

  122. when we see that God is a powerful God,

  123. he is a God who is safe,

  124. and so we come to him in relationship by faith

  125. and humbly share his identity.

  126. This is the next step.

  127. When we come by faith, we come to share his identity.

  128. So some of you are guests here,

  129. and so you don't know really who I am.

  130. My name is Jonathan.

  131. My last name is Kamiri.

  132. Growing up, I got to understand

  133. that there are certain expectations in the family

  134. that are kind of passed down

  135. that Kamiri men should look in such a way.

  136. It wasn't necessarily taught,

  137. but it's something that I can observe.

  138. So Kamiri men are men who are skillful workers.

  139. They work with their hands.

  140. They provide for their families.

  141. They respect the elderly, and so on and so forth.

  142. They take care of their families,

  143. and so this is what I got to see modeled in my family.

  144. And so it was expected that I would somehow look like a Kamiri

  145. when I would grow up,

  146. and I would share in those matters

  147. and share in those values.

  148. And so we see so far in the picture of Jericho

  149. and of the Exodus that God is a merciful God

  150. who rescues a people who are in slavery.

  151. He's gracious to them.

  152. He's abounding in steadfast love.

  153. And so his people are to extend that to the world.

  154. And so when the Israelites went to Rahab's house,

  155. and she asked that she would be protected,

  156. they protected her,

  157. and they preserved her life and her family.

  158. And so the big picture here

  159. is that for Christians,

  160. as we are in covenant with Jesus,

  161. we are ambassadors for his name.

  162. Our allegiance is to Christ.

  163. So let's go back to this commandment,

  164. and let's just look at something

  165. that I find fairly interesting.

  166. So in verse 6,

  167. I am the Lord your God

  168. who brought you out of the land of Egypt,

  169. out of the houses of slavery.

  170. These Ten Commandments are addressing the people of God.

  171. They're addressing Israel.

  172. When we think of not taking the Lord's name in vain,

  173. we can often think,

  174. well, maybe it's like swearing,

  175. saying OMG or saying a bad word,

  176. and we think of other people,

  177. unless you're someone who uses bad words.

  178. That's between you and God.

  179. But we might think it's out there.

  180. It's something that happens out there,

  181. but it doesn't really happen here.

  182. But the commandment is talking to the people of God.

  183. And there's a way that the people of God

  184. might use his name in vain.

  185. So,

  186. why is God talking to his people

  187. and asking them to not take his name in vain?

  188. Let's look at our second point for today, Andrew.

  189. In my pride,

  190. I enter a relationship with God

  191. to have my wishes and desires granted.

  192. Now, this is a bit...

  193. What's the right word?

  194. I'm sarcastic.

  195. So, this is really the hidden parts of our hearts.

  196. If you're like me,

  197. if you're wicked like me,

  198. your prayers usually resemble,

  199. God, do this for me.

  200. God, do that for me.

  201. And we always start like that.

  202. And I always catch myself,

  203. like, what am I doing?

  204. God is a holy God.

  205. God is a God who is more than just my genie.

  206. He's not a genie.

  207. God loves to have our requests

  208. and have us ask him for things.

  209. But he's much more than that.

  210. And so,

  211. in our pride,

  212. in my pride,

  213. I enter a relationship with God

  214. to have my wishes and desires granted.

  215. Now,

  216. I might offend some of you here.

  217. I apologize

  218. if Psalm 20, verse 4,

    Psalms 20:4

  219. is your life verse.

  220. Because it's likely taken out of context.

  221. It goes like this.

  222. May he give you the desire of your heart

  223. and make all your plans succeed.

  224. So,

  225. does this mean that,

  226. you know,

  227. I want to have this mansion

  228. or I want to have this beautiful car

  229. or a trophy wife or whatnot?

  230. Does this mean that

  231. if I pray to God for those things,

  232. he will give them to us

  233. because we desire them?

  234. Well, actually,

  235. this verse is in the context of a holy war.

  236. And it comes after,

  237. may the Lord receive your sacrifices.

  238. And so,

  239. it's talking about

  240. the messianic victory

  241. over sin and death.

  242. And so,

  243. we have to be careful

  244. when we look at verses like these

  245. that we don't come to God

  246. as one who will

  247. be our servant,

  248. one who will be our genie,

  249. who will do everything

  250. that we ask him to do.

  251. And so,

  252. I think the big picture here

  253. is that the problem

  254. of using God's name

  255. in vain

  256. is to associate him

  257. with purposes and powers

  258. that are inconsistent

  259. with his identity

  260. and his will.

  261. So,

  262. why does God not hold him guiltless

  263. who uses his name in vain?

  264. This is what the commandment says.

  265. And it might make us feel uncomfortable.

  266. Like,

  267. aren't we

  268. like the people of God?

  269. And aren't we,

  270. you know,

  271. really

  272. cherished and loved?

  273. And yes,

  274. those are true.

  275. And there's also this word here.

  276. So,

  277. let's look again.

  278. Verse 11.

  279. He shall not

  280. take the name

  281. of the Lord your God

  282. in vain

  283. for the Lord

  284. will not hold him guiltless

  285. who takes his name

  286. in vain.

  287. So,

  288. why does the Lord

  289. not hold him guiltless

  290. who uses his name in vain?

  291. Well,

  292. there's something special

  293. about God's name.

  294. There's something

  295. very special about it.

  296. When my parents

  297. named me Jonathan,

  298. or they were going

  299. to name me Jonathan,

  300. my oldest brother

  301. said,

  302. by no means,

  303. don't call him Jonathan.

  304. And they were like,

  305. why not?

  306. And he was like,

  307. because he reminds me

  308. of this weasel kid

  309. at school

  310. who just bothers me

  311. so much.

  312. Can't stand him.

  313. Don't call him Jonathan.

  314. And so,

  315. for him,

  316. the name Jonathan

  317. was so associated

  318. with the reputation

  319. of this kid

  320. from school.

  321. And so,

  322. even so,

  323. when I think of

  324. the name of,

  325. say,

  326. George,

  327. you think of George,

  328. you think of the way

  329. he laughs

  330. and the way he preaches

  331. and he goes to Starbucks.

  332. You have all these images

  333. that come to mind.

  334. And so,

  335. when we're thinking

  336. of God's name,

  337. we're thinking

  338. of his reputation,

  339. his fame.

  340. When Moses

  341. went to the burning bush

  342. in the cave,

  343. he received God's revelation

  344. of his name.

  345. God said,

  346. I am that I am.

  347. Now,

  348. that might not mean anything

  349. unless you're a philosopher,

  350. but what that means is

  351. that I am that I am

  352. means that he is self-sufficient.

  353. God is self-existent.

  354. And that is who God is

  355. in his essence,

  356. his identity.

  357. He does not need anyone.

  358. He does not need to be fed

  359. or does not need to be clothed

  360. to stay warm.

  361. God is self-existent,

  362. self-sufficient.

  363. And when Israel

  364. would think of Yahweh,

  365. the name of God

  366. given in the covenant,

  367. they would think of

  368. the Passover

  369. and of the Exodus

  370. and how God

  371. brought the ten plagues

  372. and how he

  373. made a covenant

  374. with them at Sinai.

  375. And now,

  376. when we think of Jesus

  377. in our culture,

  378. we think of a bad word.

  379. If you're going to hear

  380. Jesus on the bus,

  381. you think,

  382. oh, someone's angry

  383. or something bad

  384. happened somewhere.

  385. And so,

  386. we think of Jesus

  387. and we associate it badly.

  388. But the reality is that

  389. when we think of

  390. the real name of Jesus

  391. is in Hebrew,

  392. Yeshua,

  393. which means

  394. God is our Savior,

  395. God is salvation.

  396. salvation.

  397. So,

  398. as Christians,

  399. we're entrusted

  400. with that message,

  401. that name,

  402. that God is salvation,

  403. that there's hope

  404. in Jesus.

  405. And so,

  406. we are expected

  407. to resemble Jesus

  408. and we're expected

  409. to reflect his morals

  410. because we're the ones

  411. who represent him

  412. on earth

  413. in all the spheres

  414. of our lives.

  415. Whether we're at school

  416. or at work

  417. or at home,

  418. everywhere,

  419. we're supposed to carry

  420. that name of Jesus.

  421. When we come into

  422. that relationship,

  423. he seals us

  424. with the Holy Spirit,

  425. writes his name on us

  426. and so now we are his.

  427. And we have this mission

  428. that we're supposed

  429. to create that reputation

  430. for him.

  431. So,

  432. so far we've talked

  433. about a lot of things

  434. that the commandment covers

  435. but we haven't really

  436. talked about the elephant

  437. in the room.

  438. We talked a little bit

  439. about it but

  440. you might be wondering

  441. when is he going

  442. to talk about swearing

  443. and saying bad words.

  444. There has to be

  445. something connected,

  446. something related

  447. with the third commandment.

  448. Well,

  449. let me talk just a bit

  450. about when people say

  451. oh God

  452. or oh my God

  453. or Jesus

  454. in associating

  455. with something bad.

  456. I'll just talk

  457. briefly about that.

  458. It's kind of similar

  459. to when we say

  460. thank goodness.

  461. It's kind of like

  462. that we're not

  463. affiliated with Jesus

  464. or God

  465. but we're thankful

  466. to something

  467. that's greater than us

  468. because we have

  469. in us

  470. a sense

  471. a real deep sense

  472. that there is

  473. a God

  474. who is greater than us

  475. and so we just say

  476. thank goodness

  477. even if there's no one

  478. at the end

  479. of our thankfulness

  480. to receive that thankfulness

  481. and so when we say

  482. things like

  483. OMG

  484. or we slur

  485. God's name

  486. in such a way

  487. we show

  488. that we subconsciously

  489. believe

  490. in God's existence

  491. to blame him

  492. for bad things

  493. yet

  494. we suppress

  495. his existence

  496. when good things happen

  497. it's very rare

  498. that we'll hear

  499. someone say

  500. or use

  501. God's name badly

  502. when something bad happens

  503. but when something

  504. good happens

  505. sorry I might have

  506. said that wrong

  507. okay

  508. it's very rare

  509. that we'll hear

  510. somebody say

  511. God's name badly

  512. and then also say

  513. and thank God

  514. when things happen well

  515. okay

  516. so

  517. it's either

  518. you believe

  519. that God exists

  520. and you stop

  521. blaming him

  522. for the bad things

  523. or you believe

  524. that he does exist

  525. and you start

  526. thanking him

  527. for the good things

  528. here's the third point

  529. it's easy

  530. to blame God

  531. when bad things happen

  532. and uncomfortable

  533. to thank God

  534. when good things happen

  535. the Bible tells us

  536. that worship

  537. is marked

  538. by thanksgiving

  539. when we thank God

  540. and so here's the question

  541. is thankfulness

  542. to God

  543. part of your life

  544. see when we look

  545. at a commandment

  546. like this

  547. it's talking about

  548. not taking the Lord's name

  549. in vain

  550. there's also a positive

  551. implication

  552. so that's kind of like

  553. a negative implication

  554. but if we kind of

  555. flip it around

  556. are you using God's name

  557. to bless

  558. are you using God's name

  559. to encourage

  560. because there's still

  561. power in the name

  562. right

  563. so are we able

  564. to speak God's name

  565. in a way

  566. that builds up

  567. people

  568. that provides hope

  569. in the midst

  570. of despair

  571. now just in a bit

  572. of an aside here

  573. because we're talking

  574. about speech

  575. and using God's name

  576. we should talk about

  577. speech in general

  578. just for a moment

  579. I think

  580. that we

  581. should consider

  582. repenting

  583. for pessimism

  584. and unfounded

  585. optimism

  586. I think those are

  587. two things

  588. that are marking

  589. us a lot

  590. that when we

  591. carry God's name

  592. that if we're

  593. overly pessimistic

  594. and optimistic

  595. in a way

  596. that's unfounded

  597. in reality

  598. it's not bearing

  599. witness

  600. we need to be

  601. realistic

  602. yet hopeful

  603. I think that's

  604. where the

  605. tension is

  606. it's not being

  607. pessimistic

  608. or optimistic

  609. or both

  610. it's being realistic

  611. about the events

  612. of life

  613. and being hopeful

  614. at the same time

  615. so what does

  616. realistic

  617. yet hopeful

  618. look like

  619. where do we

  620. start

  621. the fourth

  622. slide please

  623. the name

  624. of Jesus

  625. is above

  626. every name

  627. in heaven

  628. and on earth

  629. he subdued

  630. the old

  631. creation

  632. to make

  633. all things

  634. new

  635. this is where

  636. the rubber

  637. hits the road

  638. God has

  639. revealed himself

  640. and he's

  641. revealed himself

  642. in Jesus

  643. his son

  644. that he sent

  645. for us

  646. and when

  647. Jesus lived

  648. the perfect

  649. life

  650. he fulfilled

  651. all the

  652. commandments

  653. and Jesus

  654. was crucified

  655. on the cross

  656. and when

  657. the cross

  658. came

  659. and Jesus

  660. was crucified

  661. on the cross

  662. he split

  663. time

  664. in two

  665. there was

  666. the old

  667. order of

  668. things

  669. where things

  670. were going

  671. towards curse

  672. and sin

  673. and destruction

  674. and decay

  675. and the cross

  676. came

  677. and he broke

  678. that flow

  679. of history

  680. and brought

  681. in a new

  682. creation

  683. so that when

  684. we think

  685. of Jesus

  686. we think

  687. that Jesus

  688. is the name

  689. above all

  690. names

  691. he's the

  692. name

  693. that

  694. God has

  695. given him

  696. the name

  697. that is

  698. exalted

  699. above every

  700. name

  701. so that

  702. every knee

  703. should bow

  704. at the end

  705. and confess

  706. that he is

  707. the Lord

  708. to the glory

  709. of God

  710. the Father

  711. and that is

  712. the end

  713. of history

  714. that's what

  715. it's going

  716. to look

  717. like

  718. and so

  719. for us

  720. as Christians

  721. as we

  722. bear the

  723. name

  724. of Jesus

  725. we bear

  726. the significance

  727. of the Messiah

  728. which means

  729. new creation

  730. which means

  731. hope

  732. and so

  733. this is

  734. why

  735. I am

  736. pleading

  737. with you

  738. we are

  739. the witnesses

  740. of Christ

  741. we bear

  742. his name

  743. in our

  744. workplace

  745. in our

  746. homes

  747. in school

  748. and so

  749. to be a

  750. Christian

  751. is to

  752. live out

  753. in humility

  754. before God

  755. is to be

  756. a people

  757. is to be

  758. the people

  759. of salvation

  760. the people

  761. of forgiveness

  762. the people

  763. of love

  764. of mercy

  765. of new

  766. creation

  767. as ambassadors

  768. for Christ

  769. this is the

  770. name

  771. that we are

  772. articulating

  773. to people

  774. in the way

  775. that we act

  776. we are

  777. articulating

  778. it

  779. or explaining

  780. it

  781. to people

  782. what it

  783. means

  784. to be

  785. a Christian

  786. as Christians

  787. we are

  788. those of

  789. Christ

  790. that's what

  791. Christians

  792. mean

  793. so

  794. this is

  795. the call

  796. to be

  797. a Christian

  798. and so

  799. as Christians

  800. do we

  801. properly

  802. carry

  803. the name

  804. of Christ

  805. to his

  806. glory

  807. let's

  808. pray

  809. father

  810. you've

  811. given

  812. your son

  813. the name

  814. that is

  815. above all

  816. names

  817. and

  818. lord

  819. you call

  820. us

  821. to

  822. relationship

  823. with you

  824. you call

  825. us

  826. to

  827. love you

  828. into a

  829. covenant

  830. where you

  831. bestow

  832. to us

  833. that name

  834. of Jesus

  835. that we

  836. are Christians

  837. now

  838. and lord

  839. help us

  840. each day

  841. to reflect

  842. the image

  843. of Christ

  844. to bear

  845. his reputation

  846. to create

  847. this reputation

  848. in those

  849. who don't

  850. know

  851. Jesus

  852. so that

  853. they will

  854. know

  855. the name

  856. of Jesus

  857. as savior

  858. as

  859. merciful

  860. as loving

  861. as gracious

  862. lord

  863. would you

  864. pour out

  865. your holy

  866. spirit

  867. upon us

  868. and press

  869. in our

  870. hearts

  871. the goodness

  872. that we

  873. taste and

  874. see in

  875. Jesus

  876. help us

  877. this day

  878. help us

  879. this week

  880. in Jesus

  881. name

  882. amen
