  1. Father, as we open your word, help us, Father, may your Holy Spirit do a work to make us honest about ourselves,

  2. that we might recognize ourselves in your word, that we might recognize our fears that your word creates,

  3. but we also, Father, might recognize the hunger that we have for what your word teaches,

  4. the longing we have to have that be real in our hearts and in our lives.

  5. So, Father, pour out your Holy Spirit upon us so that we might be fed by you, by your word.

  6. And this we ask in Jesus' name. Amen. Please be seated.

  7. So, if you could go back in a time machine to talk to young George Sinclair when he was a kid,

  8. and you were able to convince the young George Sinclair that you weren't going to tell my parents

  9. that I really could answer honestly.

  10. And if you were to ask the young George Sinclair,

  11. which was your least favorite day of the week, or is there a day you hate,

  12. I would not have had to think about it. I would have said Sunday.

  13. In fact, if you would have asked me, what is the day you hate the most,

  14. your second most hateful day, your third most hateful day,

  15. I would have said Sunday, Sunday, and Sunday.

  16. Because basically, I liked the other days of the week most of the time,

  17. but I hated Sunday.

  18. I grew up in a home with very strict Sabbath observance.

  19. Church three times a day.

  20. You go to Sunday school, then after you go to Sunday school,

  21. you go to church, and then you go home,

  22. and you get ready for the evening service.

  23. Most of the time, you weren't allowed to watch television,

  24. and I was never allowed to play with my friends.

  25. So Sunday was unbelievably boring, and I hated it.

  26. In fact, I only stopped hating it.

  27. I can't remember how old I was.

  28. I really only stopped hating it when I was old enough to get away,

  29. to go biking somewhere.

  30. And it wasn't so that I could observe the Sabbath,

  31. but my parents didn't know what I was doing,

  32. and I could have some fun.

  33. And that was my experience of keeping the Sabbath.

  34. I have to confess that, you know, on one hand,

  35. that has probably cast a long shadow on my life

  36. in terms of how I've kept the Sabbath ever since.

  37. And so on one hand,

  38. because we're talking about the Ten Commandments today,

  39. if you're a guest,

  40. we're going through the Ten Commandments.

  41. Today is the Fourth Commandment,

  42. and it's about Sabbath keeping.

  43. We're going to look in a moment to Deuteronomy 5,

  44. if you want to sort of be turning there.

  45. But, you know, all week,

  46. or the last two weeks,

  47. as I've been thinking and praying about this text,

  48. on one hand, I'm very conscious that that's,

  49. you know, that's part of my background,

  50. very strict observance of the Sabbath.

  51. On the other hand,

  52. there's the Canadian context today.

  53. And I'm probably,

  54. maybe not describing all of you,

  55. so for some of you,

  56. I'm describing other people.

  57. But probably for most of us,

  58. if we murdered somebody this week,

  59. we'd probably feel guilty.

  60. Just a guess.

  61. Probably if we stole something this week,

  62. we'd feel a little bit guilty.

  63. Just a guess.

  64. We committed adultery this week,

  65. hopefully you feel guilty.

  66. If you haven't kept the Sabbath in four months,

  67. doesn't bother us in the least.

  68. Like for the average Canadian Christian,

  69. today, we probably don't know how to keep the Sabbath.

  70. And if we don't keep the Sabbath at all,

  71. or at least not even regularly how God has intended it,

  72. that's just fine.

  73. We don't even feel the least,

  74. tiniest smidgen of guilt.

  75. And that's the context within which

  76. we have to sort of look at God's word.

  77. And so we're going to do that.

  78. And I have to confess that I've learned a lot this week

  79. studying the text.

  80. I really have.

  81. And I realize in some ways,

  82. I haven't kept the Sabbath as well as I should.

  83. I don't know if I have a solution

  84. for kids finding Sundays boring.

  85. I don't know if I have a solution for that.

  86. Part of it is sometimes just things are boring in life

  87. and kids have to learn that.

  88. But we need to learn from God's word about what it is.

  89. Should we be trying to keep the Sabbath?

  90. Should we be going back to how I was raised?

  91. Should we be doing something different?

  92. Well, we're going to look at that.

  93. So if it's in Deuteronomy chapter 5,

    Deuteronomy 5 chapter mention

  94. is one of the two versions of the Ten Commandments.

  95. It's the one that we've been using as week by week

  96. we've been going through it.

  97. Deuteronomy chapter 5.

    Deuteronomy 5 chapter mention

  98. We're going to begin at the first verse.

  99. And just a bit of a context.

  100. I don't know how much Jonathan told you every week,

  101. but some of you might not have been here,

  102. so I'll just say it to you now.

  103. There's two versions of the Ten Commandments.

  104. There's only small differences between the two of them.

  105. Actually, the Sabbath keeping

  106. is the one with the most changes.

  107. The first version in the book of Exodus

  108. takes place shortly after they've left Egypt.

  109. And this version, the Deuteronomy version,

  110. Deuteronomy is Moses has led the people

  111. to the edge of the promised land.

  112. The people are about to enter the promised land.

  113. Moses knows that he is not going into the promised land.

  114. He will die.

  115. He will have seen it from afar,

  116. but he will not enter it.

  117. He knows that.

  118. And in some ways, the book of Deuteronomy

  119. is a very long sermon by Moses.

  120. And it's not only a reminding of the covenant,

  121. it's in a sense a renewal of the covenant

  122. between the Lord God Almighty

  123. and the people of Israel.

  124. It's a renewal of the covenant

  125. before they go in to take the promised land

  126. and to live in it.

  127. And so Moses recites or reminds them

  128. of what went on and of the covenant,

  129. and that's the context.

  130. And so off we go.

  131. Deuteronomy chapter 5, verse 1.

    Deuteronomy 5:1

  132. And Moses summoned all Israel and said to them,

  133. Hear, O Israel, the statutes and the rules

  134. that I speak in your hearing today,

  135. and you shall learn them and be careful to do them.

  136. And pause there for a second.

  137. This is really important.

  138. When we stop right here,

  139. everybody in the world,

  140. all of the different religions of the world

  141. are very comfortable.

  142. If you could put up the first point, Andrew.

  143. I mean, there's slightly different ways to word this.

  144. I thought of about two or three different

  145. slight ways to word it

  146. if you wanted to capture Hinduism or Buddhism

  147. or certain other types of spirituality.

  148. But religion says,

  149. if I obey and if I achieve what the rules require,

  150. then God will show me favor.

  151. That's the basic religious impulse.

  152. That if I obey and if I achieve what the rules require,

  153. then God will show me favor.

  154. So when Deuteronomy 5,

  155. when Moses begins,

  156. Hear, O Israel, the statutes and the rules

  157. that I speak in your hearing today,

  158. and you shall learn them and be careful to do them,

  159. all of the religions of the world say,

  160. Okay, good.

  161. These are the Jewish rules or the Christian rules.

  162. Let's sit down.

  163. They all sit down.

  164. Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, North Americans,

  165. if we'll sit down,

  166. let's look and see how good their rules are

  167. compared to ours.

  168. You know, because spiritual people will say,

  169. Okay, well, I'm really interested to hear

  170. what these rules are

  171. because I know that if I'm spiritual,

  172. not religious,

  173. my rules are way better.

  174. Like my rules are just,

  175. you know,

  176. treat yourself regularly,

  177. make sure you do yoga a couple of times a week,

  178. try not to murder anybody this week,

  179. you know,

  180. you deserve a latte or a nice back,

  181. you know, whatever it is,

  182. you know,

  183. or, you know,

  184. you have to make sure you send

  185. at least one angry tweet against Trump.

  186. Like there's just a variety of different things

  187. that you might want to say,

  188. you know,

  189. but the fact of the matter is

  190. is the entire world can sit down

  191. at the end of verse 1 and say,

  192. Okay, this is very interesting.

  193. Okay,

  194. because religion is all about keeping rules.

  195. In fact,

  196. you see,

  197. for many people in North America

  198. who would describe themselves

  199. as being completely and utterly irreligious,

  200. as having given up on religion,

  201. they'd say,

  202. basically,

  203. that whole treadmill of keeping rules,

  204. forget about it.

  205. They're stupid.

  206. You know,

  207. the fact of the matter is,

  208. if I just feel like getting,

  209. you know,

  210. drinking late into the night on Saturday,

  211. getting up whenever I

  212. bleep,

  213. bleep,

  214. bleep,

  215. bleep,

  216. bleep,

  217. bleep,

  218. bleep,

  219. feel like it on a Sunday morning,

  220. you know,

  221. and wandering over,

  222. you know,

  223. having a latte,

  224. having some nice pastries,

  225. just living life on my own terms

  226. for my own interest

  227. to accomplish my own things

  228. and forget about spiritual,

  229. forget about religious,

  230. and there's a lot of people

  231. in Canada like that

  232. because they basically understand

  233. that the only option

  234. is between religion

  235. where there's going to be rules

  236. to win the God's favor

  237. and no religion

  238. or irreligion

  239. and there's no religion

  240. and irreligion

  241. and say,

  242. just forget about it.

  243. When you die,

  244. that's it.

  245. You know,

  246. suck it up.

  247. When you die,

  248. that's it.

  249. And in between,

  250. don't bother with all these stupid rules.

  251. Good grief,

  252. praying five times a day

  253. with complicated ceremonies,

  254. forget about it.

  255. Have a drink.

  256. Chill out.

  257. Watch some Netflix.

  258. Get a life.

  259. Because most people,

  260. we're all prepared for verse one.

  261. Okay?

  262. Give me the rules, God,

  263. and I'll figure out a way to keep them

  264. because I want to know your favor.

  265. And that's the basic context.

  266. And by the way,

  267. the constant struggle within Christianity

  268. is because whether you're Protestant

  269. or Catholic or Eastern Orthodox,

  270. whether you're charismatic

  271. or evangelical,

  272. the constant drift

  273. is to follow the human heart

  274. to turn the Christian faith

  275. into a religion.

  276. You've got to go to confession.

  277. You've got to say

  278. so many Hail Marys.

  279. You've got to go to Mass

  280. certain days

  281. because they're days of,

  282. what do they call them,

  283. solemn obligation

  284. or something like that.

  285. And we Protestants,

  286. we know we're way,

  287. way, way better

  288. than those,

  289. you know,

  290. Roman Catholics,

  291. you know,

  292. but ours are,

  293. you know,

  294. I don't know,

  295. you've got to go to church

  296. a certain number of times,

  297. you know,

  298. you've got to be able

  299. to know the praise songs,

  300. you have to know

  301. when to raise your hands,

  302. you have to be in a congregation

  303. that claps,

  304. you don't clap,

  305. you have to do this rule,

  306. you have to do that rule,

  307. but we turn it into,

  308. like my parents,

  309. in some ways,

  310. in their church,

  311. Sabbath keeping

  312. was a list of rules

  313. that had to be kept.

  314. And if you didn't keep the rules,

  315. like what are you,

  316. Roman Catholic or something?

  317. Like not a Christian?

  318. I'm not picking,

  319. you know,

  320. I'm sure if I had

  321. some Roman Catholics here,

  322. they could say,

  323. yeah,

  324. you don't go to Mass,

  325. what are you,

  326. a Protestant?

  327. Like it's the human heart

  328. that's the problem.

  329. And so we understand it.

  330. And religion is all about

  331. obeying,

  332. achieving the rules,

  333. what they require,

  334. then God will show me favor.

  335. So we read verse one again

  336. and we're all set.

  337. O hear, O Israel,

  338. the statutes and the rules

  339. that I speak to you

  340. in hearing today,

  341. and you shall learn them

  342. and be careful to do them.

  343. Okay?

  344. I am oriented.

  345. It's a religious text,

  346. religious rules,

  347. the Muslims,

  348. the Buddhists,

  349. the Hindus,

  350. we all sit around

  351. because the Hindus

  352. and the Buddhists

  353. and the Muslims

  354. know they're going to have

  355. better rules than these ones.

  356. And then in verse two,

  357. Moses throws a curveball.

  358. He throws a knuckleball.

  359. He throws a screwball.

  360. He throws a ball

  361. that nobody's expecting.

  362. And he continues to throw

  363. screwball after screwball

  364. because Moses,

  365. and he's just speaking for God,

  366. wants to mess

  367. with our religious mind.

  368. How does he go in verse two?

  369. The Lord, our God,

  370. made a covenant with us

  371. in Horeb.

  372. What?

  373. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, God.

  374. No, no, no, God.

  375. Moses, you got this wrong.

  376. You're supposed to tell us

  377. the different rules that we do,

  378. and then if we succeed

  379. in the rules that we do,

  380. then you might make

  381. a covenant with us.

  382. You don't start with

  383. making a covenant with us.

  384. Like, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.

  385. God, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.

  386. Just stop.

  387. Moses, stop.

  388. Time out.

  389. You're supposed to tell us

  390. the different things

  391. that we have to do

  392. so God will show us

  393. the favor of a covenant.

  394. Because we need to sort of

  395. have a bit of a say in this

  396. so you're bitting our debt.

  397. you don't begin by announcing

  398. that you make a covenant with us.

  399. You just make a covenant with us.

  400. Now, you see,

  401. when we read this as a religious way,

  402. we skip this part.

  403. This is now where it goes

  404. blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah,

  405. verse 7.

  406. Yada, yada, yada, yada, yada, yada,

  407. verse 7.

  408. But God messes

  409. with our religious heart.

  410. He messes

  411. with our desire

  412. to create a system

  413. whereby really God

  414. sort of owes us some favors

  415. because of our great success

  416. at rule keeping.

  417. But he messes with us.

  418. In fact, if you could put this

  419. to the next point up, Andrew,

  420. in some ways this is the summary

  421. of what's going on

  422. in the whole Ten Commandments.

  423. First, God makes a covenant.

  424. Then he redeems us.

  425. Then he asks us

  426. to keep a weekly Sabbath for him

  427. by resting and remembering.

  428. The order is really important.

  429. You see,

  430. the religious inclination is

  431. if we rest and remember

  432. very well,

  433. God will redeem us.

  434. If we rest and remember

  435. very well,

  436. God will spend time with us.

  437. The order is unbelievably important.

  438. God makes a covenant with us.

  439. We do nothing

  440. to make the covenant.

  441. Absolutely nothing.

  442. We do as much

  443. to make a covenant with God

  444. as we have a say

  445. in how fast the earth

  446. spins around the sun.

  447. Let's have a world vote

  448. about how fast the earth

  449. spins around the sun.

  450. It doesn't matter.

  451. God makes the covenant.

  452. And then God,

  453. as we're going to see

  454. in a moment,

  455. he redeems them.

  456. They didn't redeem themselves.

  457. Not even remotely close.

  458. He does everything

  459. to redeem them.

  460. And after he's made the covenant,

  461. after he's redeemed them

  462. so that they can be part

  463. of the covenant,

  464. he asks

  465. these different rules.

  466. Not these different rules,

  467. these different words

  468. is a better word than rules.

  469. These different words.

  470. And

  471. as we're going to see

  472. in a moment,

  473. if you look at the Ten Commandments,

  474. eight of the commandments

  475. involve not doing something.

  476. Two of the commandments,

  477. God gives us a project,

  478. so to speak.

  479. Something to aim for.

  480. We'll talk about this

  481. more in a moment.

  482. This one,

  483. that we're to attempt

  484. to keep the Sabbath,

  485. and the next one

  486. about honoring parents.

  487. Eight,

  488. don't steal,

  489. don't murder,

  490. don't,

  491. don't,

  492. don't.

  493. For two of them,

  494. in a sense,

  495. there's something to pursue.

  496. But we're going to see

  497. as we keep reading this

  498. that first God makes a covenant,

  499. then he redeems us,

  500. then he asks us

  501. to keep a weekly Sabbath

  502. for him

  503. by resting and remembering.

  504. So let's go back

  505. to verse two again.

  506. And we'll see

  507. that this is exactly

  508. how it's structured.

  509. And it's really important

  510. because our religious sensibility

  511. wants to make

  512. verses two to six,

  513. yada, yada, yada, yada, yada, yada,

  514. yada, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.

  515. We need to listen.

  516. The Lord our God

  517. made a covenant

  518. with us in Horeb.

  519. Not with our fathers

  520. did the Lord

  521. make this covenant,

  522. but with us

  523. who are all of us

  524. here alive today.

  525. That's a very simple thing.

  526. Basically,

  527. when God makes a covenant,

  528. the implication is

  529. that it's going to be

  530. multiple generations

  531. until either he brings

  532. in a new covenant

  533. or the end comes.

  534. For us,

  535. the covenant,

  536. the covenant with Israel

  537. still has a bearing

  538. and importance

  539. up until Jesus comes again.

  540. But for us,

  541. both Jews and Gentiles

  542. who are in here

  543. in the congregation

  544. together as Christians,

  545. the church

  546. is this,

  547. the new covenant

  548. of his blood

  549. instituted when Jesus

  550. dies on the cross.

  551. That's the covenant.

  552. There will be no other covenant

  553. until Jesus returns.

  554. And it's understood

  555. by this covenant.

  556. God's showing us

  557. that covenants

  558. are understood

  559. to be intergenerational,

  560. multiple generational,

  561. especially within

  562. your own children,

  563. but also to extend

  564. beyond your own children.

  565. Verse 4,

  566. it continues,

  567. the Lord God,

  568. the Lord spoke with you

  569. face to face

  570. at the mountain.

  571. In other words,

  572. it was a personal communication.

  573. They don't see his face,

  574. but this is face to face

  575. as a poetic way of saying

  576. he's right in your face.

  577. He's right up close to you

  578. when he's speaking to you.

  579. The Lord spoke with you

  580. face to face

  581. at the mountain

  582. out of the midst

  583. of the fire

  584. while I stood

  585. between the Lord

  586. and you at that time

  587. to declare to you

  588. the word of the Lord,

  589. once again emphasizing

  590. that God spoke.

  591. For you were afraid

  592. because of the fire

  593. and you did not go up

  594. into the mountain.

  595. And God said,

  596. now here he's introducing himself.

  597. This is the second little bit

  598. of what I've said up here.

  599. I am the Lord your God

  600. who brought you

  601. out of the land of Egypt,

  602. out of the house of slavery.

  603. He hasn't told them

  604. a single rule.

  605. He hasn't told them

  606. a single thing to do.

  607. God made the covenant.

  608. You didn't do anything

  609. to make the covenant.

  610. God chose to make

  611. a covenant with you.

  612. And you couldn't redeem yourself

  613. from slavery.

  614. God.

  615. The Lord God.

  616. And Lord here,

  617. remember every time

  618. you see the word Lord

  619. in the Old Testament,

  620. that's the covenant

  621. personal name for God.

  622. The relational name for God.

  623. Okay?

  624. When my kids,

  625. at a certain time,

  626. all of my kids

  627. had a time

  628. where they wanted

  629. to start calling me George.

  630. And I told each one of them

  631. that there's six billion people

  632. in the world

  633. who can call me George.

  634. there's only nine kids,

  635. only nine people

  636. who can call me Dad.

  637. And Lord is like Dad.

  638. We're invited to call him Dad.

  639. I mean, it's Lord.

  640. He's big.

  641. It's reminding us

  642. of how big he is,

  643. but it's the personal name.

  644. And he says,

  645. verse six,

  646. I am the Lord your God

  647. who brought you up

  648. out of the land of slavery,

  649. out of the land of Egypt,

  650. out of the house of slavery.

  651. And you're going to notice

  652. that when we go to the commandment

  653. about the Sabbath day,

  654. he's going to remind

  655. the people

  656. about the fact

  657. that he brought them

  658. out of slavery,

  659. that it's a very,

  660. very,

  661. very important idea.

  662. So we see here,

  663. first God makes a covenant,

  664. then he redeems us,

  665. then he asks us

  666. to keep a weekly Sabbath

  667. for him

  668. by resting

  669. and remembering.

  670. Now,

  671. some of us might say,

  672. okay,

  673. well,

  674. George,

  675. here's the problem

  676. with this.

  677. I wasn't a slave

  678. in Egypt.

  679. Last I checked,

  680. in fact,

  681. I mean,

  682. I think there's a few people

  683. here who've been in Egypt.

  684. Most of us

  685. have never been to Egypt.

  686. So,

  687. you know,

  688. maybe other than Paul,

  689. there's nobody else here

  690. who's gone to Egypt,

  691. so how could God

  692. have redeemed us

  693. from it?

  694. Like,

  695. how does this apply

  696. to us as Christians?

  697. How does this apply

  698. to us at all?

  699. Well,

  700. two very,

  701. very important things.

  702. We're going to look at

  703. two other scripture passages.

  704. Here's the first thing

  705. to keep in mind.

  706. It's a New Testament teaching,

  707. a Jesus teaching.

  708. Next point,

  709. Andrew.

  710. Until we are

  711. redeemed by Jesus Christ,

  712. every human being

  713. is a slave

  714. in denial.

  715. By the way,

  716. that's why he had to go

  717. through the denial

  718. to the promised land.

  719. Sorry,

  720. I took a slip

  721. in a really bad joke.

  722. Denial,

  723. denial,

  724. never mind.

  725. Okay.

  726. I shouldn't try jokes

  727. in English

  728. or when they have to be

  729. translated into Portuguese.

  730. But until,

  731. this is very,

  732. very,

  733. very,

  734. very,

  735. very,

  736. very,

  737. very stark news.

  738. Actually,

  739. if you want to just turn

  740. to John chapter 8

    John 8 chapter mention

  741. in your Bibles,

  742. turn to John chapter 8.

    John 8 chapter mention

  743. Some of you,

  744. probably your minds

  745. instantly went to that.

  746. John chapter 8,

    John 8:34

  747. verse 34.

  748. Keep your finger

  749. in Deuteronomy

  750. because we're going

  751. to go back.

  752. But if you go back

  753. to John chapter 8,

    John 8:34

  754. verse 34,

  755. we see Jesus speaking.

  756. And actually,

  757. we'll begin at verse 31.

  758. John 8,

  759. 31.

  760. So Jesus said to the Jews,

  761. that's the religious leaders

  762. of the Jewish people

  763. who had believed him,

  764. if you abide in my word,

  765. you are truly my disciples

  766. and you will know the truth

  767. and the truth

  768. will set you free.

  769. It's a very famous quote.

  770. You will know the truth

  771. and the truth

  772. will set you free.

  773. They answered him,

  774. we are the offspring

  775. of Abraham

  776. and have never been

  777. enslaved to anyone.

  778. How is it that you say

  779. you will become free?

  780. Jesus answered them,

  781. truly, truly,

  782. if you have the old

  783. King James Version,

  784. I love it,

  785. verily, verily,

  786. I say to you,

  787. everyone who practices sin

  788. is a slave to sin.

  789. And then it goes on,

  790. the slave does not remain

  791. in the house forever,

  792. the son remains forever,

  793. so if the son sets you free,

  794. you will be free indeed.

  795. Truly, truly,

  796. I say to you,

  797. everyone who practices sin

  798. is a slave to sin.

  799. I'm not going to spend

  800. a long time

  801. trying to prove this.

  802. We're going to talk about it

  803. a little bit,

  804. a fair amount actually,

  805. in the fall

  806. when we start our series

  807. in Galatians

  808. because in the book

  809. of Galatians,

  810. the image of slavery

  811. as a way to understand

  812. being separate from God

  813. is one of the primary ideas

  814. to understand sin

  815. is slavery.

  816. But this,

  817. I'm going to just point out,

  818. this is a very,

  819. very stark thing.

  820. I'm not making any comment.

  821. I don't know what

  822. Justin Trudeau's

  823. eternal destiny is.

  824. I don't know if he's

  825. a Christian or not.

  826. I'm not,

  827. I'm just,

  828. but, you know,

  829. apparently he isn't.

  830. It doesn't matter

  831. if you're Bill Gates.

  832. It doesn't matter

  833. if you're one of Rick's

  834. friends on the street.

  835. It doesn't matter

  836. if you're Justin Trudeau.

  837. It doesn't matter

  838. if you're a person

  839. living in a shelter.

  840. Apart from Jesus,

  841. you are a slave to sin.

  842. You are a slave.

  843. If you were here today,

  844. you haven't given

  845. your life to Jesus,

  846. the Bible just insulted you.

  847. It only insulted you,

  848. by the way,

  849. if it's not true.

  850. If it's true,

  851. it was the first true thing

  852. you have heard

  853. about your situation

  854. potentially in a long time.

  855. If it's not true,

  856. it's an insult.

  857. If it's true,

  858. it's hope.

  859. It's hope.

  860. And so, you see,

  861. on one hand,

  862. this is the beginning

  863. of trying to understand

  864. this Ten Commandments.

  865. On one hand,

  866. okay,

  867. I wasn't a slave in Egypt,

  868. but if every human being

  869. apart from Christ

  870. is a slave,

  871. and a slave in denial,

  872. because Bill Gates

  873. does not understand

  874. himself as a slave,

  875. Justin Trudeau

  876. does not understand

  877. himself as a slave,

  878. and people in Ottawa

  879. and in Angola,

  880. apart from Christ,

  881. do not think of themselves

  882. as a slave.

  883. But if we understand

  884. that Jesus has redeemed us

  885. out of slavery

  886. into freedom,

  887. then that's a very,

  888. very easy jump

  889. from the Sabbath

  890. commandment

  891. that we're going

  892. to read in a second.

  893. Here's the second thing.

  894. If you could put up

  895. the next point,

  896. Andrew.

  897. The Exodus

  898. recorded in the book

  899. of Exodus

  900. points to the true

  901. and greater Exodus

  902. accomplished by Jesus,

  903. Messiah.

  904. Remember,

  905. the way the Old Testament

  906. is,

  907. looking at it

  908. from your point of view.

  909. This is written

  910. before the cross.

  911. We are reading

  912. this

  913. after the cross.

  914. And from Genesis 3

  915. all the way

  916. to Malachi 4,

  917. time and time again,

  918. the scripture

  919. is giving us

  920. riddles

  921. and hints

  922. and types

  923. and promises

  924. that will only be

  925. fulfilled in the cross.

  926. after the cross,

  927. when we read

  928. books like Deuteronomy,

  929. we can look back

  930. and understand

  931. in many ways

  932. how this was

  933. preparing people

  934. to understand

  935. the cross.

  936. If you turn

  937. in your Bible

  938. to Luke 9,

    Luke 9:31

  939. verse 31,

  940. Luke 9,

    Luke 9:31

  941. verse 31,

  942. we'll see this teaching

  943. comes from Jesus.

  944. It's going to be hard

  945. because almost

  946. all English versions

  947. translate the word,

  948. don't translate

  949. the word literally,

  950. but they translate

  951. it metaphorically.

  952. But if you read,

  953. we'll begin

  954. in verse 28,

  955. Luke 9,

  956. 28.

  957. Now,

  958. so what's happened

  959. here in the flow

  960. of the book

  961. is that Jesus

  962. just before this

  963. has revealed

  964. to his disciples

  965. for the first time

  966. that he's going

  967. to die on the cross.

  968. In fact,

  969. not only has he revealed

  970. that he's going

  971. to die on the cross,

  972. he's revealed

  973. that his death

  974. on the cross

  975. is the whole purpose

  976. of him coming.

  977. And everything

  978. that happens

  979. in the book of Luke

  980. after just a few

  981. verses before this

  982. is Jesus

  983. preparing in

  984. different ways

  985. his disciples

  986. to understand

  987. what it means

  988. that he's come

  989. to die upon the cross

  990. for them

  991. to save them.

  992. And so here,

  993. that's the context

  994. of the transfiguration.

  995. And this is the story,

  996. one of Luke's

  997. account of the transfiguration.

  998. Now about eight days,

  999. verse 28,

  1000. after these sayings

  1001. about revealing

  1002. that he's going

1003. to die on the cross,

  1004. he took with him

  1005. Peter and John

  1006. and James

  1007. and went up

  1008. on the mountain

  1009. to pray.

1010. And as he was praying,

  1011. the appearance

  1012. of his face

  1013. was altered

  1014. and his clothing

  1015. became dazzling white

  1016. and behold,

  1017. two men

  1018. were talking with him,

  1019. Moses and Elijah.

  1020. This is really interesting.

  1021. Moses,

  1022. who preaches

  1023. Deuteronomy

  1024. and is the one

  1025. who's there

1026. in the book of Exodus

  1027. that God uses

  1028. to reveal

  1029. this covenant

  1030. with Israel

  1031. that they are

  1032. to enter into

  1033. and to remind them

  1034. of the covenant,

  1035. to remind them

  1036. that they were

  1037. delivered from slavery

1038. and learning how to live

  1039. as whole and free

  1040. human beings

1041. in light of the covenant.

  1042. This Moses

  1043. and Elijah

  1044. who's taken

  1045. right up into heaven,

  1046. representing the prophets,

  1047. they're speaking

  1048. to Jesus.

  1049. verse 30 again,

  1050. and behold,

  1051. two men

  1052. were talking with him,

  1053. Moses and Elijah,

  1054. who appeared

  1055. in glory

  1056. and spoke

  1057. of his,

  1058. and the word

  1059. departure

  1060. is literally

  1061. exodus.

  1062. They spoke

  1063. of his exodus,

  1064. which he was

  1065. about to accomplish

  1066. at Jerusalem.

  1067. So isn't it

  1068. interesting,

  1069. Moses

  1070. talks to Jesus.

  1071. Moses,

  1072. who was used

  1073. by God

  1074. to bring the people

  1075. of Israel

  1076. out of the house

  1077. of slavery,

  1078. out of the house

  1079. of bondage,

  1080. out of Egypt

  1081. by crossing

  1082. the Red Sea.

  1083. Jesus has just

  1084. revealed that he

  1085. came to die

  1086. and now

  1087. they describe

  1088. his death

  1089. upon the cross

  1090. and what it

  1091. accomplishes

  1092. and his resurrection

  1093. as an exodus.

  1094. that you,

  1095. ordinary human beings

  1096. like you and me

  1097. can benefit from.

  1098. And so

  1099. the exodus

  1100. recorded

  1101. in the book

  1102. of Exodus

  1103. points to the true

  1104. and greater

  1105. exodus

  1106. accomplished

  1107. by Jesus Messiah,

  1108. which we can benefit

  1109. from and follow.

  1110. And so

  1111. when we read

  1112. that

  1113. verse 6,

  1114. I am the Lord

  1115. your God

  1116. who brought you

  1117. out of the house

  1118. of bondage,

  1119. out of the house

  1120. of slavery,

  1121. we can instantly

  1122. think one moment

  1123. we can completely

  1124. and utterly

  1125. get behind this

  1126. because Jesus

  1127. accomplished

  1128. the true

  1129. and greater

  1130. exodus

  1131. because he

  1132. defeated

  1133. sin itself.

  1134. He defeated

  1135. death itself.

  1136. Sin which

  1137. causes death,

  1138. he's defeated

  1139. sin,

  1140. he's defeated

  1141. death,

  1142. he's defeated

  1143. the devil,

  1144. he's defeated

  1145. all hostile

  1146. spiritual powers,

  1147. he has defeated

  1148. all of these

  1149. things.

  1150. It is the true,

  1151. that is the true

  1152. great,

  1153. the true defeat

  1154. of slavery

  1155. because we

  1156. can't stop

  1157. sinning,

  1158. we cannot

  1159. stop ourselves

  1160. from dying,

  1161. we are slaves

  1162. to sin,

  1163. we are slaves

  1164. to death

  1165. and some of us

  1166. are even slaves

  1167. to hostile

  1168. demonic

  1169. spiritual powers

  1170. and we cannot

  1171. free ourselves

  1172. and Jesus'

  1173. exodus,

  1174. his death

  1175. upon the cross

  1176. and his resurrection

  1177. is the true

  1178. defeat of

  1179. slavery which

  1180. we can share

  1181. in by faith.

  1182. We can remember

  1183. this commandment

  1184. brothers and

  1185. sisters.

  1186. This is ours.

  1187. It is not

  1188. just for

  1189. Moses and the

  1190. people who are

  1191. there,

  1192. this is ours.

  1193. A far

  1194. greater

  1195. exodus,

  1196. a far

  1197. greater

  1198. defeat

  1199. and triumph

  1200. over slavery,

  1201. the promise

  1202. of a far

  1203. greater

  1204. freedom

  1205. and wholeness

  1206. that can begin

  1207. on this side

  1208. of the grave

  1209. and with the

  1210. coming of Jesus

  1211. where when we

  1212. see him face

  1213. to face

  1214. and we will

  1215. see him face

  1216. to face

  1217. and we will

  1218. be changed

  1219. because we

  1220. will be like

  1221. him

  1222. and our

  1223. wholeness

  1224. and our

  1225. freedom

  1226. in Christ

  1227. is a

  1228. destiny

  1229. that cannot

  1230. be taken

  1231. from us.

  1232. turn back

  1233. to

  1234. Deuteronomy

  1235. once again

  1236. read verse

  1237. six

  1238. this

  1239. Deuteronomy

  1240. five

  1241. verse six

  1242. I am the

  1243. Lord your

  1244. God

  1245. who brought

  1246. you out

  1247. of the

  1248. land

  1249. of Egypt

  1250. out of

  1251. the house

  1252. of slavery

  1253. now

  1254. jump down

  1255. to the

  1256. actual

  1257. commandment

  1258. or the

  1259. word

  1260. about

  1261. Sabbath

  1262. observance

  1263. verse 12

  1264. observe

  1265. the

  1266. Sabbath

  1267. day

  1268. to keep

  1269. it

  1270. holy

  1271. as

  1272. the

  1273. Lord

  1274. your

  1275. God

  1276. commanded

  1277. you

  1278. six

  1279. days

  1280. you

  1281. shall

  1282. labor

  1283. and

  1284. do

  1285. all

  1286. your

  1287. work

  1288. but

  1289. the

  1290. seventh

  1291. day

  1292. is

  1293. a

  1294. Sabbath

  1295. to

  1296. the

  1297. Lord

  1298. your

  1299. God

  1300. on

  1301. it

  1302. you

  1303. shall

  1304. not

  1305. do

  1306. any

  1307. work

  1308. you

  1309. or

  1310. your

  1311. son

  1312. or

  1313. your

  1314. daughter

  1315. or

  1316. your

  1317. male

  1318. servant

  1319. or

  1320. your

  1321. female

  1322. servant

  1323. or

  1324. your

  1325. ox

  1326. or

  1327. donkey

  1328. or

  1329. any

  1330. of

  1331. your

  1332. livestock

  1333. or

  1334. the

  1335. sojourner

  1336. who

  1337. is

  1338. within

  1339. your

  1340. gates

  1341. that

  1342. your

  1343. male

  1344. and

  1345. servant

  1346. and

  1347. your

  1348. female

  1349. servant

  1350. may

  1351. rest

  1352. as

  1353. well

  1354. as

  1355. you

  1356. you

  1357. shall

  1358. remember

  1359. that

  1360. you

  1361. were

  1362. a

  1363. slave

  1364. in

  1365. the

  1366. land

  1367. of

  1368. Egypt

  1369. and

  1370. the

  1371. Lord

  1372. your

  1373. God

  1374. brought

  1375. you

  1376. out

  1377. from

  1378. there

  1379. with

  1380. a

  1381. mighty

  1382. hand

  1383. and

  1384. an

  1385. outstretched

  1386. arm

  1387. therefore

  1388. the

  1389. Lord

  1390. your

  1391. God

  1392. commanded

  1393. you

  1394. to

  1395. keep

  1396. the

  1397. Sabbath

  1398. day

  1399. so

  1400. here's

  1401. a couple

  1402. of

  1403. things

  1404. about

  1405. this

  1406. if

  1407. you

  1408. could

  1409. put

  1410. up

  1411. the

  1412. next

  1413. point

  1414. even

  1415. after

  1416. I

  1417. become

  1418. Christ's

  1419. own

  1420. forever

  1421. I

  1422. can

  1423. be

  1424. lured

  1425. into

  1426. living

  1427. like

  1428. a

  1429. slave

  1430. even

  1431. after

  1432. I

  1433. become

  1434. Christ's

  1435. own

  1436. forever

  1437. I

  1438. can

  1439. be

  1440. lured

  1441. into

  1442. living

  1443. like

  1444. a

  1445. slave

  1446. it's

  1447. really

  1448. funny

  1449. so

  1450. this

  1451. morning

  1452. I'm

  1453. making

  1454. my

  1455. coffee

  1456. and

  1457. making

  1458. my

  1459. peanut

  1460. butter

  1461. and

  1462. jam

  1463. stuff

  1464. that

  1465. I'm

  1466. going

  1467. to

  1468. have

  1469. with

  1470. my

  1471. coffee

  1472. and

  1473. I'm

  1474. honest

  1475. with

  1476. you

  1477. I've

  1478. been

  1479. working

  1480. on

  1481. this

  1482. all

  1483. week

  1484. and

  1485. what

  1486. am

  1487. I

  1488. doing

  1489. as

  1490. I'm

  1491. making

  1492. my

  1493. coffee

  1494. and

  1495. buttering

  1496. my

  1497. rolls

  1498. and

  1499. putting

  1500. peanut

  1501. butter

  1502. and

  1503. jam

  1504. on

  1505. them

  1506. am

  1507. I

  1508. thinking

  1509. God

  1510. is

  1511. so

  1512. good

  1513. he's

  1514. delivered

  1515. me

  1516. from

  1517. slavery

  1518. he's

  1519. redeemed

  1520. me

  1521. my

  1522. destiny

  1523. forever

  1524. no

  1525. I

  1526. was

  1527. unbelievably

  1528. anxious

  1529. about

  1530. what

  1531. was

  1532. going

  1533. to

  1534. happen

  1535. next

  1536. Sunday

  1537. I

  1538. had

  1539. been

  1540. lured

  1541. into

  1542. living

  1543. like

  1544. a

  1545. slave

  1546. I

  1547. was

  1548. going

  1549. to

  1550. come

  1551. here

  1552. and

  1553. tell

  1554. you

  1555. all

  1556. the

  1557. things

  1558. you're

  1559. supposed

  1560. to

  1561. do

  1562. but

  1563. existentially

  1564. I

  1565. was

  1566. being

  1567. lured

  1568. into

  1569. living

  1570. like

  1571. a

  1572. slave

  1573. to

  1574. anxiety

  1575. see

  1576. that's

  1577. what

  1578. sanctification

  1579. is all

  1580. about

  1581. and

  1582. that's

  1583. one

  1584. of

  1585. the

  1586. reasons

  1587. why

  1588. the

  1589. Sabbath

  1590. is

  1591. an

  1592. important

  1593. tool

  1594. in

  1595. sanctification

  1596. because

  1597. the fact

  1598. of the

  1599. matter

  1600. is

  1601. is that

  1602. our

  1603. minds

  1604. naturally

  1605. move

  1606. to

  1607. different

  1608. things

  1609. that

  1610. call

  1611. our

  1612. attention

  1613. to

  1614. serve

  1615. them

  1616. whether

  1617. it's

  1618. anxiety

  1619. whether

  1620. it's

  1621. to

  1622. try to

  1623. get

  1624. a

  1625. particular

  1626. degree

  1627. whether

  1628. it's

  1629. about

  1630. trying

  1631. to

  1632. make

  1633. more

  1634. money

  1635. whether

  1636. it's

  1637. about

  1638. satisfying

  1639. our

  1640. husband

  1641. or

  1642. our

  1643. wife

  1644. whether

  1645. our

  1646. mind

  1647. keeps

  1648. moving

  1649. to

  1650. wounds

  1651. things

  1652. that

  1653. people

  1654. did

  1655. to

  1656. hurt

  1657. our

  1658. minds

  1659. keep

  1660. going

  1661. to

  1662. particular

  1663. images

  1664. our

  1665. minds

  1666. keep

  1667. going

  1668. to

  1669. our

  1670. pride

  1671. our

  1672. minds

  1673. keep

  1674. going

  1675. to

  1676. all

  1677. sorts

  1678. of

  1679. things

  1680. and

  1681. even

  1682. though

  1683. we are

  1684. Christ's

  1685. owned

  1686. forever

  1687. it is

  1688. really

  1689. easy

  1690. for us

  1691. to be

  1692. lured

  1693. into

  1694. slavery

  1695. which

  1696. is

  1697. why

  1698. God

  1699. in

  1700. his

  1701. kindness

  1702. says

  1703. you know

  1704. what

  1705. George

  1706. you know

  1707. what

  1708. I'd

  1709. like

  1710. you

  1711. to

  1712. do

  1713. remember

  1714. George

  1715. I made

  1716. the

  1717. covenant

  1718. that's

  1719. what goes

  1720. on when

  1721. Jesus

  1722. is doing

  1723. the

  1724. last

  1725. supper

  1726. he's

  1727. telling

  1728. everybody

  1729. I'm

  1730. making

  1731. a

  1732. covenant

  1733. we

  1734. didn't

  1735. all

  1736. agree

  1737. to

  1738. make

  1739. the

  1740. covenant

  1741. I'm

  1742. making

  1743. a

  1744. new

  1745. covenant

  1746. that

  1747. will

  1748. go

  1749. on

  1750. forever

  1751. and

  1752. I'm

  1753. going

  1754. to

  1755. die

  1756. on

  1757. the

  1758. cross

  1759. for

  1760. you

  1761. and

  1762. I'm

  1763. going

  1764. to

  1765. make

  1766. sure

  1767. that

  1768. every

  1769. single

  1770. thing

  1771. that

  1772. you

  1773. do

  1774. that's

  1775. ever

  1776. wrong

  1777. I'm

  1778. going

  1779. to

  1780. pay

  1781. for

  1782. it

  1783. and

  1784. your

  1785. inability

  1786. George

  1787. to live

  1788. a holy

  1789. life

  1790. so

  1791. that

  1792. you know

  1793. you have

  1794. perfect

  1795. fellowship

  1796. hands

  1797. and

  1798. open

  1799. arms

  1800. that

  1801. you

  1802. cease

  1803. and

  1804. put

  1805. your

  1806. arms

  1807. out

  1808. to

  1809. me

  1810. and

  1811. I'll

  1812. catch

  1813. you

  1814. and

  1815. I'll

  1816. take

  1817. you

  1818. because

  1819. it's

  1820. not

  1821. George

  1822. about

  1823. how

  1824. long

  1825. your

  1826. arm

  1827. it's

  1828. about

  1829. how

  1830. long

  1831. my

  1832. arm

  1833. it's

  1834. not

  1835. about

  1836. how

  1837. strong

  1838. your

  1839. grip

  1840. is

  1841. it's

  1842. about

  1843. how

  1844. my

  1845. grip

  1846. is

  1847. I

  1848. will

  1849. never

  1850. let

  1851. you

  1852. go

  1853. and

  1854. George

  1855. once

  1856. a

  1857. week

  1858. I

  1859. want

  1860. you

  1861. to

  1862. reenact

  1863. that

  1864. see

  1865. the

  1866. word

  1867. sabbath

  1868. means

  1869. cease

  1870. stop

  1871. you

  1872. see

  1873. in

  1874. some

  1875. ways

  1876. if

  1877. we

  1878. start

  1879. to

  1880. learn

  1881. to

  1882. practice

  1883. the

  1884. sabbath

  1885. we're

  1886. remembering

  1887. our

  1888. conversion

  1889. because

  1890. our

  1891. conversion

  1892. in a

  1893. sense

  1894. comes

  1895. for

  1896. those

  1897. of

  1898. us

  1899. who've

  1900. had

  1901. an

  1902. adult

  1903. conversion

  1904. or

  1905. an

  1906. older

  1907. conversion

  1908. our

  1909. conversion

  1910. comes

  1911. when

  1912. we

  1913. in a

  1914. sense

  1915. we've

  1916. been

  1917. running

  1918. from

  1919. Jesus

  1920. our

  1921. back

  1922. is

  1923. to

  1924. the

  1925. cross

  1926. and

  1927. the

  1928. time

  1929. comes

  1930. that

  1931. we

  1932. no

  1933. longer

  1934. are

  1935. walking

  1936. away

  1937. from

  1938. him

  1939. we're

  1940. no

  1941. longer

  1942. running

  1943. away

  1944. from

  1945. him

  1946. that

  1947. we

  1948. stop

  1949. and

  1950. we

  1951. turn

  1952. and

  1953. we

  1954. lay

  1955. down

  1956. our

  1957. sword

  1958. and

  1959. we

  1960. lay

  1961. down

  1962. our

  1963. shield

  1964. and

  1965. we

  1966. lay

  1967. down

  1968. our

  1969. porcupine

  1970. outfit

  1971. which

  1972. is

  1973. all

  1974. prickly

  1975. to

  1976. try

  1977. to

  1978. keep

  1979. everybody

  1980. especially

  1981. Jesus

  1982. away

  1983. and

  1984. we

  1985. lay

  1986. it

  1987. all

  1988. down

  1989. and

  1990. in

  1991. a

  1992. sense

  1993. we

  1994. say

  1995. to

  1996. Jesus

  1997. I

  1998. have

  1999. to

  2000. stop

  2001. I

  2002. surrender

  2003. I

  2004. surrender

  2005. I

  2006. stop

  2007. and

  2008. the word

  2009. Sabbath

  2010. means

  2011. stop

  2012. it

  2013. means

  2014. cease

  2015. and

  2016. so

  2017. God

  2018. in

  2019. his

  2020. grace

  2021. and

  2022. he's

  2023. done

  2024. all

  2025. the

  2026. stuff

  2027. for

  2028. us

  2029. to

  2030. redeem

  2031. us

  2032. this

  2033. isn't

  2034. to

  2035. redeem

  2036. us

  2037. but

  2038. he's

  2039. created

  2040. this

  2041. discipline

  2042. for

  2043. us

  2044. to

  2045. figure

  2046. out

  2047. how

  2048. to

  2049. enter

  2050. into

  2051. where

  2052. every

  2053. week

  2054. I'm

  2055. invited

  2056. to

  2057. stop

  2058. again

  2059. on

  2060. one

  2061. day

  2062. and

  2063. serving

  2064. anxiety

  2065. makes

  2066. you

  2067. anxious

  2068. and

  2069. tired

  2070. serving

  2071. money

  2072. often

  2073. makes

  2074. you

  2075. anxious

  2076. and

  2077. tired

  2078. not

  2079. when

  2080. you're

  2081. really

  2082. successful

  2083. but

  2084. when

  2085. the

  2086. stock

  2087. market

  2088. drops

  2089. 30%

  2090. you

  2091. realize

  2092. how

  2093. much

  2094. anxiety

  2095. you

  2096. had

  2097. when

  2098. it

  2099. goes

  2100. down

  2101. 30%

  2102. or

  2103. investments

  2104. crash

  2105. and

  2106. we're

  2107. invited

  2108. to

  2109. rest

  2110. and

  2111. what

  2112. are

  2113. we

  2114. invited

  2115. to

  2116. think

  2117. upon

  2118. for

  2119. at

  2120. least

  2121. one

  2122. day

  2123. a

  2124. week

  2125. we're

  2126. not

  2127. thinking

  2128. upon

  2129. why

  2130. did

  2131. that

  2132. person

  2133. do

  2134. that

  2135. to

  2136. me

  2137. why

  2138. don't

  2139. people

  2140. like

  2141. me

  2142. like

  2143. why

  2144. aren't

  2145. I

  2146. slimmer

  2147. or

  2148. more

  2149. muscular

  2150. or

  2151. taller

  2152. or

  2153. shorter

  2154. or

  2155. more

  2156. successful

  2157. or

  2158. all

  2159. of

  2160. these

  2161. scripts

  2162. that

  2163. go

  2164. through

  2165. our

  2166. minds

  2167. all

  2168. week

  2169. and

  2170. for

  2171. one

  2172. week

  2173. one

  2174. day

  2175. a

  2176. week

  2177. we're

  2178. invited

  2179. to

  2180. actually

  2181. remember

  2182. I

  2183. was

  2184. a

  2185. slave

  2186. in

  2187. denial

  2188. I

  2189. am

  2190. saved

  2191. by

  2192. grace

  2193. alone

  2194. through

  2195. faith

  2196. alone

  2197. in

  2198. Christ

  2199. alone

  2200. I

  2201. am

  2202. to

  2203. remember

  2204. that

  2205. Jesus

  2206. won

  2207. and

  2208. invited

  2209. me

  2210. and

  2211. brought

  2212. me

  2213. into

  2214. a

  2215. covenant

  2216. that

  2217. is

  2218. for

  2219. my

  2220. wholeness

  2221. and

  2222. for

  2223. my

  2224. life

  2225. and

  2226. for

  2227. my

  2228. freedom

  2229. that

  2230. will

  2231. go

  2232. for

  2233. all

  2234. eternity

  2235. and

  2236. I'm

  2237. invited

  2238. to

  2239. cease

  2240. and

  2241. rest

  2242. and

  2243. remember

  2244. that

  2245. one

  2246. day

  2247. a

  2248. week

  2249. next

  2250. point

  2251. Andrew

  2252. here's

  2253. another

  2254. thing

  2255. very

  2256. briefly

  2257. I

  2258. see

  2259. I

  2260. God

  2261. is not

  2262. mean

  2263. and

  2264. cruel

  2265. he

  2266. is

  2267. good

  2268. and

  2269. loving

  2270. so

  2271. he

  2272. redeems

  2273. us

  2274. to

  2275. live

  2276. as

  2277. he

  2278. designed

  2279. us

  2280. go

  2281. back

  2282. later

  2283. on

  2284. and read

  2285. Genesis

    Genesis 2:1–3

  2286. chapter 2

  2287. verses 1

  2288. to 3

  2289. and you'll

  2290. see

  2291. that right

  2292. when

  2293. God

  2294. there's a

  2295. wonderful

  2296. thing in the

  2297. prayer book

  2298. marriage

  2299. ceremony

  2300. that says

  2301. marriage

  2302. was

  2303. instituted

  2304. of God

  2305. in the time

  2306. of man's

  2307. innocency

  2308. in other words

  2309. before the

  2310. fall

  2311. God

  2312. created

  2313. marriage

  2314. and

  2315. what's

  2316. the

  2317. set

  2318. saying

  2319. here

  2320. if you

  2321. go back

  2322. and look

  2323. at

  2324. Genesis

    Genesis 2:1–3

  2325. chapter 2

  2326. verses 1

  2327. to 3

  2328. before

  2329. the

  2330. fall

  2331. God

  2332. designed

  2333. human

  2334. beings

  2335. to have

  2336. a day

  2337. of rest

  2338. every

  2339. seven

  2340. so that

  2341. means

  2342. that when

  2343. he

  2344. redeems

  2345. us

  2346. and enters

  2347. us into

  2348. a new

  2349. covenant

  2350. he doesn't

  2351. say

  2352. every

  2353. seven

  2354. days

  2355. they're

  2356. going to

  2357. do

  2358. something

  2359. really

  2360. difficult

  2361. every

  2362. man

  2363. has to

  2364. do

  2365. the

  2366. splits

  2367. that

  2368. would

  2369. be

  2370. cruel

  2371. and

  2372. unnatural

  2373. I

  2374. can

  2375. hardly

  2376. touch

  2377. my

  2378. ankles

  2379. with

  2380. my

  2381. legs

  2382. straight

  2383. I

  2384. mean

  2385. I

  2386. can

  2387. touch

  2388. my

  2389. toes

  2390. if

  2391. I

  2392. do

  2393. this

  2394. but

  2395. don't

  2396. ask

  2397. me

  2398. to

  2399. keep

  2400. my

  2401. legs

  2402. straight

  2403. and

  2404. God

  2405. isn't

  2406. mean

  2407. and

  2408. cruel

  2409. and

  2410. says

  2411. every

  2412. man

  2413. has

  2414. to

  2415. do

  2416. the

  2417. splits

  2418. or

  2419. something

  2420. like

  2421. that

  2422. he

  2423. does

  2424. redemption

  2425. redeems

  2426. us

  2427. to live

  2428. the way

  2429. he

  2430. created

  2431. us

  2432. he

  2433. created

  2434. us

  2435. to have

  2436. a rest

  2437. on

  2438. the

  2439. seventh

  2440. day

  2441. and

  2442. now

  2443. this

  2444. is

  2445. sanctified

  2446. so

  2447. just

  2448. in

  2449. closing

  2450. seven

  2451. pointers

  2452. about

  2453. keeping

  2454. the

  2455. sabbath

  2456. seven

  2457. pointers

  2458. about

  2459. keeping

  2460. the

  2461. sabbath

  2462. if you

  2463. want

  2464. these

  2465. written

  2466. they'll

  2467. be on

  2468. the

  2469. webpage

  2470. Wednesday

  2471. or

  2472. whatever

  2473. if you're

  2474. curious

  2475. because I'm

  2476. going to

  2477. go through

  2478. them

  2479. quick

  2480. first

  2481. one

  2482. A

  2483. Canadian

  2484. A

  2485. sorry

  2486. never

  2487. mind

  2488. A

  2489. the

  2490. command

  2491. is

  2492. normative

  2493. and

  2494. dynamic

  2495. not

  2496. regulative

  2497. and

  2498. legalistic

  2499. I

  2500. know

  2501. four

  2502. big

  2503. words

  2504. I

  2505. apologize

  2506. I

  2507. apologize

  2508. for

  2509. four

  2510. big

  2511. words

  2512. you

  2513. can

  2514. look

  2515. at

  2516. my

  2517. blog

  2518. today

  2519. when I

  2520. talk

  2521. about

  2522. normative

  2523. and

  2524. regulative

  2525. it's

  2526. a

  2527. persistent

  2528. problem

  2529. in

  2530. Christians

  2531. so

  2532. here's

  2533. the

  2534. interesting

  2535. thing

  2536. about

  2537. this

  2538. command

  2539. this

  2540. command

  2541. does

  2542. not

  2543. say

  2544. every

  2545. okay

  2546. here's

  2547. an

  2548. example

  2549. Islam

  2550. is

  2551. regulative

  2552. not

  2553. normative

  2554. five

  2555. times

  2556. a

  2557. day

  2558. you

  2559. pray

  2560. and

  2561. you

  2562. don't

  2563. just

  2564. say

  2565. my

  2566. watch

  2567. time

  2568. to

  2569. pray

  2570. Allah

  2571. is

  2572. great

  2573. help

  2574. me

  2575. with

  2576. this

  2577. job

  2578. interview

  2579. and

  2580. off

  2581. you

  2582. go

  2583. no

  2584. you

  2585. have

  2586. to

  2587. take

  2588. certain

  2589. postures

  2590. you

  2591. have

  2592. to

  2593. do

  2594. you

  2595. have

  2596. to

  2597. do

  2598. this

  2599. you

  2600. have

  2601. to

  2602. do

  2603. that

  2604. you

  2605. have

  2606. to

  2607. do

  2608. hand

  2609. washings

  2610. it's

  2611. regulative

  2612. but

  2613. the

  2614. command

  2615. here

  2616. isn't

  2617. regulative

  2618. it

  2619. gives

  2620. us

  2621. a

  2622. task

  2623. a

  2624. project

  2625. figure

  2626. out

  2627. how

  2628. to

  2629. cease

  2630. how

  2631. to

  2632. rest

  2633. and

  2634. how

  2635. to

  2636. remember

  2637. every

  2639. day

  2640. doesn't

  2642. you

  2644. to

  2645. be

  2646. in

  2647. church

  2648. for

  2649. six

  2650. hours

  2651. it

  2652. doesn't

  2653. say

  2654. you

  2655. have

  2656. to

  2657. sing

  2658. four

  2659. hours

  2660. of

  2661. praise

  2662. music

  2663. it

  2664. doesn't

  2665. say

  2666. that

  2667. you

  2668. have

  2669. to

  2670. say

  2671. 500

  2672. Hail

  2673. Marys

  2674. you

  2675. see

  2676. it's

  2677. so

  2678. smart

  2679. and

  2680. wise

  2681. because

  2682. how

  2683. we

  2684. keep

  2685. the

  2833. isn't

  2834. but

  2835. maybe

  2836. it

  2837. is

  2838. maybe

  2839. for

  2840. a

  2841. retired

  2842. person

  2843. it's

  2844. going

  2845. to

  2846. be

  2847. that

  2848. that's

  2849. the

  2850. day

  2851. that

  2852. you

  2853. spend

  2854. far

  2855. more

  2856. hours

  2857. in

  2858. prayer

  2859. but

  2860. it's

  2861. very

  2862. powerful

  2863. it's

  2864. not

  2865. legalistic

  2866. and

  2867. it's

  2868. not

  2869. regulative

  2870. but

  2871. it

  2872. gives

  2873. you

  2874. a

  2875. project

  2876. people

  2877. of

  2878. Messiah

  2879. God

  2880. he

  2881. made

  2882. a

  2883. covenant

  2884. with

  2885. you

  2886. he

  2887. redeemed

  2888. you

  2889. a

  2890. sign

  2891. of

  2892. that

  2893. is

  2894. cease

  2895. rest

  2896. remember

  2897. you need

  2898. to figure

  2899. that out

  2900. honestly

  2901. within

  2902. your

  2903. context

  2904. does

  2905. that

  2906. mean

  2907. that

  2908. maybe

  2909. you

  2910. won't

  2911. be

  2912. involved

  2913. in

  2914. minor

  2915. hockey

  2916. maybe

  2917. it

  2918. means

  2919. you

  2920. won't

  2921. be

  2922. involved

  2923. in

  2924. minor

  2925. hockey

  2926. George

  2927. how

  2928. can

  2929. this

  2930. work

  2931. when

  2932. I

  2933. have

  2934. so

  2935. many

  2936. hours

  2937. I

  2938. have

  2939. to

  2940. work

  2941. throughout

  2942. the

  2943. week

  2944. well

  2945. the

  2946. thing

  2947. is

  2948. if

  2949. you

  2950. don't

  2951. actually

  2952. consider

  2953. it

  2954. an

  2955. important

  2956. thing

  2957. to

  2958. solve

  2959. you'll

  2960. never

  2961. solve

  2962. it

  2963. but

  2964. now

  2965. that

  2966. you

  2967. know

  2968. it's

  2969. an

  2970. important

  2971. thing

  2972. to

  2973. solve

  2974. talk

  2975. it

  2976. over

  2977. maybe

  2978. it

  2979. means

  2980. changing

  2981. a

  2982. job

  2983. maybe

  2984. it

  2985. means

  2986. doing

  2987. some

  2988. other

  2989. type

  2990. of

  2991. thing

  2992. maybe

  2993. it

  2994. means

  2995. keeping

  2996. a

  2997. Sabbath

  2998. on

  2999. a

  3000. day

  3001. other

  3002. than

  3003. Sunday

  3004. but

  3005. this

  3006. is

  3007. what

  3008. God

  3009. has

  3010. asked

  3011. us

  3012. to

  3013. do

  3014. and

  3015. he's

  3016. asked

  3017. us

  3018. to

  3019. do

  3020. it

  3021. for

  3022. our

  3023. soul's

  3024. health

  3025. it's

  3026. normative

  3027. a

  3028. project

  3029. and it's

  3030. dynamic

  3031. we've

  3032. got to

  3033. do

  3034. something

  3035. Sunday

  3036. isn't

  3037. just

  3038. Saturday

  3039. only

  3040. it

  3041. got stuck

  3042. going

  3043. to

  3044. church

  3045. this

  3046. command

  3047. is

  3048. inviting

  3049. us

  3050. to

  3051. understand

  3052. the

  3053. Sabbath

  3054. day

  3055. in a

  3056. different

  3057. way

  3058. the

  3066. what

  3067. this

  3068. text

  3069. is

  3070. implying

  3071. is

  3072. that

  3073. we

  3074. work

  3075. wisely

  3076. and

  3077. well

  3078. for

  3131. you

  3132. rest

  3133. not

  3150. is

  3151. to

  3157. the

  3158. resting

  3159. and

  3160. the

  3165. you

  3166. are

  3167. with

  3176. isn't

  3177. it

  3178. the

  3180. remembering

  3181. is

  3182. always

  3183. better

  3185. you

  3186. do

  3187. it

  3188. with

  3190. I

  3215. it's

  3216. just so

  3253. more

  3254. wonderful

  3255. about
