  1. Father, open our eyes to your word and open our hearts and all these things we ask in the name of Jesus, your son and our savior. Amen.

  2. Please be seated.

  3. So many of you probably know that I was in Angola for a total of 15 days.

  4. I was gone for three weeks, basically, but I was in Angola for 15 days.

  5. And I'm not very brave. I'm a basically I'm a chicken.

  6. And I found one of the things I found very hard about Angola, the part of Angola that I was in, Lubangu, was that it was very, very African.

  7. You know, you would see nobody who was my skin color on the street.

  8. And I found that intimidating. I really it gives you a great appreciation for immigrants coming to this country.

  9. And just some of the things that they the great courage that an immigrant has.

  10. You know, I'm a child of immigrants, but my parents immigrated from Ireland.

  11. And anyway, you know, just everything.

  12. The you know, the city was very broken and very crowded.

  13. And I didn't want to just be one of those people who was trapped in a safe house.

  14. I wanted to get out and walk around the streets.

  15. And that required some work on my part, some courage on my part.

  16. But that's just because I'm a scaredy cat.

  17. For many of you people, you would have just done it naturally.

  18. But I for me, it was hard.

  19. And but one of the things that I was a bit worried about was just I'd been to Nairobi twice before.

  20. And some of you might know that the nickname for Nairobi is Nairobbery.

  21. And and I so I was just you know, I just wasn't sure walking around the streets, you know, what my safety would be like,

  22. what were safe parts of the city, what were dangerous parts of the city.

  23. And so one of the things that all of the missionaries told me was that especially during the day,

  24. La Bangu is very safe.

  25. And that, in fact, Angolans are not other than the fact that they had a civil war,

  26. which went on for almost 40 years where they did horrific things.

  27. Some of you might have seen my blog where I talked about I saw the spot where the government would take rebels

  28. when they caught them and take them to the edge of a big cliff,

  29. shoot them in the knees to watch them stumble and then fall backwards to their death.

  30. But apart from the thugs like that, that Angolans are very, very family friendly and it's very safe.

  31. But one of the things they shared with me was that if you're not careful, if you leave something,

  32. if you're somewhere and, you know, it could be a book or my phone or just anything,

  33. if I leave it and then maybe just take my eyes off of it for a few seconds, it'll probably be stolen.

  34. But I'll never have to worry about anybody trying to take anything off me, but it would be stolen.

  35. And if I'm wrong about this, this is what the missionaries told me.

  36. And the missionaries said that it's almost as if for Angolans that that's not stealing.

  37. Because if I'd really cared about it, I would have kept it on my possession or watched it.

  38. So that the fact that I left it unattended, it sort of meant that it was I didn't care about it,

  39. so it's not really stealing.

  40. Now, we roll our eyes at that.

  41. We roll our eyes at that.

  42. But what it shows us, though, is that what I'm going to suggest is today we're looking at the 10th commandment,

  43. the 8th commandment, which is you shall not steal.

  44. In fact, I'll read it for you from the Bible, but it's only those few verses.

  45. It's not something that requires us to all, you can just sort of take my word for it.

  46. But it's Deuteronomy 5, verse 19, and you shall not steal.

    Deuteronomy 5:19

  47. That's the commandment.

  48. And my guess is that every single culture, including Canadian culture,

  49. has ways where we write off certain types of stealing as not really being stealing.

  50. That every culture has this problem.

  51. And that we ourselves as human beings have this problem where there's certain things that aren't really stealing.

  52. I mean, technically, stealing is taking something that belongs rightfully to another.

  53. We're cheating them out of something which is rightfully theirs.

  54. How many of us Canadians think it's stealing if we leave work five minutes early?

  55. Well, George, don't be a nitpicker, but a moment, you left work early.

  56. You know, you've been paid to work for a certain number of hours, and you leave early.

  57. How many of us, when it comes time for a yard sale and somebody asks us how old the couch is,

  58. how many of us shave two or three or five years off the age of the couch

  59. so that we can get a few extra dollars for the couch?

  60. And how many of us feel guilty afterwards that we've shaved two or three or four or five or eight years

  61. off the age of the couch so that we can get a few more dollars out of it?

  62. How many of us even asked about the couch, what asked as if we'd always owned it,

  63. when maybe we bought it secondhand?

  64. Why? Because we want to make a couple of extra dollars.

  65. Do we see that as stealing?

  66. We probably don't see that as stealing.

  67. So here's the thing.

  68. We're going to spend, I'm not going to keep giving you time, example after example after example

  69. about different ways that we might get around this basic commandment,

  70. but I want to just try to have it drilled into our house.

  71. So, Andrew, if you could put up the first point.

  72. Here's the first point, which is, it'll be there in a second.

  73. At one of the churches I was at this summer on my holidays,

  74. they had the scripture text up on the side on the screen,

  75. and it was sort of interesting the way the minister did it.

  76. He'd keep pointing to the screen.

  77. You could tell it rather than reading from the Bible, he was reading from the screen, but it was neat.

  78. So here's the first thing.

  79. You shall not steal.

  80. That's what the commandment says.

  81. It's crystal clear, but I do not always recognize stealing.

  82. I think that you can, I mean, you shall not steal is, it's so simple.

  83. You couldn't word it clearer.

  84. But the question is, are there things in my heart,

  85. or are there culturally acceptable forms of stealing or theft

  86. that blinds our eyes to when we're stealing?

  87. And I think that there just is.

  88. And we see it the best when we look at other cultures,

  89. and we can listen to how they would reason,

  90. and we'd say, oh, that's just so stupid.

  91. Of course that's stealing.

  92. Of course, if you just leave your iPhone or something just there for,

  93. you know, 20 seconds, and you walk away,

  94. and you take it, that's stealing.

  95. But my guess is that that's true of every single culture,

  96. that there's ways that we blind our eyes,

  97. our eyes are blinded to what we do.

  98. How many of us, when it comes time to do our income tax,

  99. and if you use one of those computer programs that up on the corner,

  100. it can tell you what your rebate's going to be or how much you owe,

  101. after we see the number, say, that's not a very good number,

  102. I wonder if I can go through all of this a little bit and pad it

  103. or change in a little bit of a way to try to get that number to be a different number.

  104. And I don't mean just going through to get something you missed.

  105. I mean, you know what, maybe I gave a little bit more to this than I thought.

  106. Or maybe if I just make this,

  107. I remember talking to one accountant,

  108. and he was a Christian,

  109. and he told me all of this with no hint

  110. that he was doing something wrong.

  111. And he knew the dollar amounts for deductions,

  112. that if you claim just under it,

  113. they wouldn't in effect,

  114. I mean, I don't know if it's still the case anymore,

  115. this was a few years ago,

  116. the government wouldn't look for receipts.

  117. So that when he did his income tax form,

  118. for every single one of those categories,

  119. he took that amount of a deduction,

  120. even if he hadn't made it,

  121. just a little bit under,

  122. so he could claim all of these deductions,

  123. none of which he'd made,

  124. most of which he hadn't made.

  125. If he'd actually made it,

  126. he'd take the right amount.

  127. But he knew how the system worked,

  128. and he did that with no sense whatsoever.

  129. He grew up in the church,

  130. he was a devout Christian,

  131. went to Bible studies,

  132. did all of that stuff.

  133. He could tell you what the four spiritual laws were.

  134. He probably had about 30 or 40 or 50 Bible verses memorized.

  135. But he told me that with no hint of guilt

  136. that what he was doing was stealing.

  137. Like not even slight.

  138. Now once again, in all of these cases,

  139. we might think,

  140. well, these people are really bad,

  141. but we're different.

  142. But I'm just going to suggest that this is true,

  143. that I do not always recognize stealing.

  144. One of the things,

  145. when I went to Angola,

  146. on the way to Angola,

  147. I had to have two overnight flights.

  148. And on the way back,

  149. I had to have one overnight flight.

  150. And I wasn't in business class,

  151. so that meant I was in the working class seats.

  152. And trying to sleep on a plane

  153. when the seats aren't designed for sleeping

  154. is very, very difficult.

  155. I was really blessed on my way back.

  156. The overnight flight,

  157. I actually happened to be in the middle section

  158. with three seats

  159. and there was nobody in either one of the other seats.

  160. So I was actually able to sort of lie down.

  161. And that's a way better than trying to fall asleep sitting up.

  162. But let me tell you,

  163. there's these little ridges

  164. and other types of things.

  165. And it was a lot easier to fall asleep.

  166. I'm not that big,

  167. but I'm big enough that I had to be curled up

  168. in a fetal type of position

  169. with my feet sort of jammed into the armrest on one end.

  170. And there's all still these pointy things banging into me.

  171. And that's what angular means.

  172. If you could put up the next point,

  173. you shall not steal

  174. is absolute and angular.

  175. And I'm making this point

  176. because it's part of all of these commandments

  177. that they're absolute and angular.

  178. Angular means they're pointy.

  179. They jab you.

  180. That if you meditate upon,

  181. you shall not steal.

  182. If that commandment,

  183. if God's word does its work

  184. and starts to be conscious in your mind

  185. that you shall not steal,

  186. it's going to be angular.

  187. If you said to your coworkers,

  188. well, you can't leave 15 minutes early.

  189. That's stealing.

  190. What would they do?

  191. These religious fanatics.

  192. You know,

  193. but you shall not steal.

  194. In many ways,

  195. it's a good commandment.

  196. Most of us,

  197. none of us really disagree.

  198. Nobody disagrees with this commandment.

  199. Buddhists don't disagree with this commandment.

  200. Hindus don't disagree with this commandment.

  201. Jewish people,

  202. secular people don't disagree with it.

  203. But the statement's made in an absolute sense.

  204. And it's made in an absolute sense.

  205. When I say it's angular,

  206. it means it's pointy

  207. and it jabs us.

  208. And that as the commandment

  209. starts to have a bigger role in our lives,

  210. we'll realize that there's different ways

  211. that we break it.

  212. And it's an absolute statement,

  213. not only in the sense that it's just,

  214. you shall not steal.

  215. But if you think about it,

  216. it's really sort of an interesting way.

  217. Because the way we normally think as Canadians

  218. is we would try to give you an argument

  219. as to why you shall not steal as wise.

  220. You shall not steal because you'll get caught.

  221. You shall not steal because nobody likes a thief.

  222. You shouldn't steal because you're hurting people.

  223. You shouldn't steal because.

  224. Or you try to derive it from something.

  225. In other words,

  226. you say we have this basic thing,

  227. you should love your neighbors.

  228. And if you want to really love your neighbors

  229. and you try to figure it out,

  230. it means you shouldn't steal.

  231. But it's an absolute statement.

  232. God doesn't argue for it.

  233. He doesn't say,

  234. these are the 15 reasons

  235. why you shall not steal as wise.

  236. He just says it.

  237. You shall not steal.

  238. It's an absolute statement.

  239. And what that means

  240. is it's a statement

  241. that we don't think our way to,

  242. but we think from.

  243. We don't think our way to this

  244. as smart.

  245. It's part of the way that you think.

  246. It's an absolute statement

  247. and an angular statement.

  248. Could you put up the next thing, Andrew, please?

  249. One of the things,

  250. one of the easy,

  251. one of the simple ways

  252. that probably in every culture

  253. and including in Canadian culture

  254. that we steal

  255. without thinking that we're stealing

  256. is we think there's exceptions.

  257. It's all right to steal from the government

  258. because they,

  259. a bunch of yahoos,

  260. they're,

  261. they waste our money.

  262. It's all right to steal

  263. from an insurance company

  264. because they're making huge profits.

  265. It's all right to steal from,

  266. and then you fill in the blank.

  267. But this doesn't give any exceptions.

  268. It shows no favoritism.

  269. You can't steal from gays

  270. because they're gay.

  271. You can't steal from the rich

  272. because they're rich.

  273. You can't steal from the poor

  274. because they're poor.

  275. You can't steal,

  276. you just,

  277. there's no favoritism in it.

  278. It cuts across all social classes,

  279. all of the normal ways.

  280. Because you see,

  281. in most cultures,

  282. they would have this view

  283. that you can't steal,

  284. but in most cultures,

  285. they also have,

  286. in a sense,

  287. exceptions.

  288. You can't steal from your family

  289. or your tribe,

  290. but it's all right to steal

  291. from another tribe.

  292. Or in our culture,

  293. you can't,

  294. it's sort of,

  295. you know,

  296. it's sort of all right

  297. to steal from the rich.

  298. Give you a good example.

  299. How many of us

  300. would be upset

  301. if we found out

  302. that somebody stole

  303. from Donald Trump?

  304. Trump?

  305. In fact,

  306. most of the editorialists

  307. in the country

  308. would go,

  309. way to go,

  310. that person deserves a medal.

  311. Right?

  312. Because we've created

  313. an exception.

  314. It's all right

  315. to steal from Trump.

  316. See, once again,

  317. this is how the thing

  318. is supposed to be

  319. to get at us.

  320. We carry these things

  321. around in our culture,

  322. just like our culture does.

  323. We carry around

  324. these exceptions.

  325. And this text,

  326. it's like a healthy virus

  327. to try to change our DNA.

  328. That's why every one

  329. of these points,

  330. except the last one or two,

  331. I'm going to keep saying

  332. you shall not steal,

  333. you shall not steal,

  334. you shall not steal.

  335. And we need to guard our heart

  336. because our heart

  337. allows exceptions,

  338. but the Bible

  339. doesn't allow an exception.

  340. Next point.

  341. You shall not steal

  342. is unchanging,

  343. yet dynamic.

  344. What that means is this.

  345. You shall not steal.

  346. It was true

  347. when it was written.

  348. Maybe it was written

  349. 1500 BC.

  350. Maybe it was written

  351. 1200 BC.

  352. There's some debate

  353. about when Moses existed.

  354. Christians can disagree

  355. on trying to figure out

  356. the archaeological evidence.

  357. It's true

  358. when Jesus was alive.

  359. It's true today.

  360. It was true in feudalism.

  361. It's completely

  362. and utterly unchanging.

  363. Yet it's dynamic

  364. because you know what?

  365. It's not always simple

  366. to figure out

  367. how to apply it.

  368. Cultural things change.

  369. It's one of the really

  370. interesting things

  371. if you go back

  372. in the bulletin

  373. and I have the

  374. growing in grace.

  375. No, going deeper.

  376. And if you go into

  377. going deeper

  378. and you look at

  379. some of the Bible passages

  380. which I send you to,

  381. the way the book

  382. of Deuteronomy

  383. is written

  384. is that there's a part

  385. later on in Deuteronomy

  386. where there's a variety

  387. of commands

  388. that help you

  389. to understand

  390. a little bit

  391. about what the commandment

  392. means.

  393. And so one of the commandments,

  394. one of the laws

  395. that's developed

  396. from this

  397. is giving a man

  398. who's just been married

  399. one year

  400. that he doesn't have

  401. to serve,

  402. do any government service

  403. or military service

  404. after his marriage.

  405. You see,

  406. that's very,

  407. very interesting

  408. because if you think about it,

  409. it's very easy

  410. for the state

  411. to say,

  412. we have these,

  413. I have these

  414. expectations of you

  415. and if you don't

  416. fulfill them,

  417. it's like you're robbing me.

  418. That's how we could

  419. think about it.

  420. But this text says,

  421. one moment,

  422. there's limits

  423. about what the state

  424. can demand.

  425. Another really important,

  426. interesting thing

  427. if you go back

  428. and look at that list

  429. is it said

  430. that if you,

  431. somebody owes you money,

  432. you can't take

  433. their upper millstone

  434. to get them

  435. as part of the

  436. repayment of the debt

  437. and the way that

  438. you needed two,

  439. you need two stones

  440. to grind grain

  441. and it says

  442. you're not allowed

  443. to take the top one

  444. and that's a very,

  445. very interesting thing

  446. because what it's

  447. showing us

  448. is that

  449. property rights

  450. and stuff matters

  451. but people matter more

  452. and even though

  453. technically

  454. they owe you

  455. that money,

  456. you can't take

  457. the money away

  458. from them

  459. if it means

  460. they're going

  461. to die.

  462. You see what I mean?

  463. You have this

  464. very simple commandment

  465. and on one hand

  466. it's unchanging

  467. but as it starts

  468. to come into our minds

  469. and we start

  470. to try to think

  471. of what does it mean

  472. in terms of downloading?

  473. What does it mean

  474. in terms of this?

  475. What does it mean

  476. in terms of our culture

  477. with this?

  478. You realize

  479. it forces you

  480. to think

  481. and to talk

  482. and to pray.

  483. Not in terms of

  484. there's some simple ones,

  485. obviously you don't have

  486. to be much thinking

  487. about whether you should

  488. go into a bank

  489. and rob it

  490. but there's so many

  491. different commandments

  492. that this sort of

  493. has a bit of an impact on

  494. that on one hand

  495. it's unchanging

  496. but it doesn't stop thought,

  497. it propels thought

  498. as you realize

  499. how important it is.

  500. Next point.

  501. You shall not steal

  502. means that private property

  503. is good.

  504. You know,

  505. I'm going to be

  506. a little bit politically

  507. incorrect in Canada

  508. but that's exactly

  509. what it means.

  510. It means that

  511. private property

  512. is good.

  513. It in effect

  514. says that communism

  515. at least in its

  516. theoretical form

  517. of the state

  518. owning everything

  519. is probably sinful

  520. because it would imply

  521. that if the state

  522. or the tribe

  523. owns everything

  524. and individuals

  525. never own something

  526. that's probably

  527. stealing going on

  528. but by the same

  529. part in time

  530. to our libertarian

  531. friends

  532. if everything

  533. is just owned

  534. by individuals

  535. and there's no group

  536. that owns anything

  537. there's probably

  538. stealing that's going on.

  539. I steal

  540. from somebody

  541. by taking

  542. what is properly

  543. theirs

  544. and taking it

  545. for myself.

  546. And I have

  547. private property

  548. in quotes

  549. because as Christians

  550. we always have to

  551. remember something

  552. important.

  553. If you want to

  554. turn your Bibles

  555. to 2nd

  556. 1st Chronicles

  557. I hope I wrote it down

  558. 1st Chronicles

  559. 29.14

  560. 1st Chronicles

  561. 29.14

  562. This is very

  563. simply put

  564. and very

  565. powerfully put

  566. Solomon

  567. has just

  568. dedicated the temple

  569. and it's part of

  570. his

  571. sorry

  572. David

  573. David is

  574. praying

  575. over all

  576. of the offerings

  577. that he's made

  578. so that when

  579. Solomon comes along

  580. he'll be able

  581. to build the temple.

  582. Look at 1st

  583. Chronicles

  584. 29.14

  585. But who am I

  586. and what is my

  587. people

  588. that we should

  589. be able

  590. thus

  591. to offer

  592. willingly

  593. and listen to this

  594. for all things

  595. come from you

  596. and of

  597. your own

  598. we have

  599. given you.

  600. for all things

  601. come from you

  602. and of

  603. your own

  604. have we

  605. given you.

  606. So what this

  607. text is saying

  608. is that God

  609. is ultimately

  610. the one

  611. who owns

  612. everything

  613. I own

  614. nothing

  615. neither do you.

  616. And when I was

  617. part of the

  618. Anglican Church

  619. of Canada

  620. often texts

  621. like this

  622. would somehow

  623. slide into

  624. an argument

  625. for socialism

  626. but that's not

  627. what the text

  628. is saying.

  629. What this text

  630. is reminding us

  631. is that we're

  632. sub-owners

  633. we're stewards

  634. but it really

  635. is ours

  636. to care for.

  637. The government

  638. can't take it

  639. the bank

  640. can't take it

  641. an individual

  642. can't take it

  643. there's things

  644. which we

  645. properly

  646. own

  647. in the sense

  648. of it

  649. ultimately

  650. belonging to

  651. God

  652. but he's

  653. put it

  654. under our

  655. care

  656. to use it

  657. in a way

  658. which is

  659. for common

  660. good

  661. and for his

  662. glory

  663. but this text

  664. you shall not

  665. steal

  666. means that

  667. private property

  668. with the quotes

  669. is good.

  670. Next point

  671. Andrew please

  672. you shall not

  673. steal

  674. is a great

  675. protection

  676. for the poor

  677. and the weak.

  678. Last night

  679. my wife and I

  680. and Emma

  681. we watched

  682. a movie on

  683. Netflix

  684. it came out

  685. two years ago

  686. I think it's

  687. called Lady in

  688. Gold

  689. is that what

  690. it's called

  691. Louise?

  692. Lady in

  693. Gold

  694. it's a really

  695. really good

  696. movie about

  697. a woman

  698. who

  699. decided to

  700. take the

  701. Austrian

  702. government

  703. to court

  704. to get

  705. back the

  706. artwork

  707. that the

  708. Nazis

  709. had stolen

  710. from her

  711. and the

  712. Nazis

  713. after they

  714. stole it

  715. from her

  716. gave it

  717. to an

  718. Austrian

  719. museum

  720. and she

  721. decides to

  722. go after

  723. them in

  724. court

  725. to try

  726. to get

  727. her

  728. property

  729. back

  730. and I

  731. didn't

  732. know

  733. of course

  734. I didn't

  735. watch it

  736. thinking I

  737. was going

  738. to talk

  739. I mean

  740. I knew

  741. I was

  742. going

  743. to talk

  744. about

  745. this

  746. but I

  747. didn't

  748. watch

  749. the movie

  750. for a

  751. sermon

  752. illustration

  753. but the

  754. Nazis

  755. just

  756. stole

  757. the

  758. property

  759. this

  760. text

  761. this

  762. commandment

  763. you shall

  764. not

  765. steal

  766. is a

  767. powerful

  768. protection

  769. for the

  770. poor

  771. and the

  772. weak

  773. the

  774. government

  775. cannot

  776. take

  777. your

  778. money

  779. the

  780. rich

  781. cannot

  782. take

  783. your

  784. money

  785. or

  786. your

  787. possessions

  788. or

  789. your

  790. house

  791. or

  792. your

  793. farm

  794. you

  795. shall

  796. not

  797. steal

  798. it

  799. doesn't

  800. become

  801. not

  802. stealing

  803. because

  804. the

  805. Supreme

  806. Court

  807. of

  808. Canada

  809. says

  810. it's

  811. all

  812. right

  813. doesn't

  814. become

  815. not

  816. stealing

  817. because

  818. the

  819. government

  820. passes

  821. a

  822. law

  823. if

  824. you

  825. go

  826. back

  827. in

  828. going

  829. deeper

  830. you'll

  831. see

  832. I

  833. give

  834. two

  835. Old

  836. Testament

  837. examples

  838. how

  839. the

  840. Old

  841. Testament

  842. very

  843. clearly

  844. sees

  845. that

  846. the

  847. government

  848. can

  849. steal

  850. this

  851. isn't

  852. an

  853. anti

  854. government

  855. rant

  856. it's

  857. just

  858. that

  859. this

  860. commandment

  861. the more

  862. that it

  863. becomes

  864. part of

  865. our

  866. consciousness

  867. and our

  868. cultural

  869. consciousness

  870. is a

  871. powerful

  872. protection

  873. for the

  874. poor

  875. and the

  876. weak

  877. and we

  878. as

  879. Christians

  880. should

  881. always be

  882. concerned

  883. for

  884. that

  885. it's

  886. also a

  887. powerful

  888. thing

  889. we can't

  890. steal

  891. from

  892. another

  893. country

  894. just because

  895. it's another

  896. country

  897. and we have

  898. a more

  899. powerful

  900. military

  901. it is a

  902. powerful

  903. break

  904. on

  905. imperialism

  906. just as a

  907. bit of an

  908. aside

  909. one of the

  910. things which is

  911. more and more

  912. important for us

  913. as a congregation

  914. is for

  915. Christians

  916. a congregation

  917. of Christians

  918. is to be

  919. concerned for

  920. the poor

  921. I think

  922. the left

  923. in Canada

  924. has largely

  925. forgotten

  926. the poor

  927. the left

  928. is

  929. I'm not

  930. putting down

  931. civil

  932. servant

  933. unions

  934. making no

  935. comment about

  936. it

  937. but the

  938. left is

  939. primarily

  940. made up

  941. now of

  942. public

  943. service

  944. unions

  945. that are

  946. concerned

  947. with

  948. upper

  949. middle

  950. class

  951. and

  952. middle

  953. class

  954. issues

  955. and there's

  956. a decreasing

  957. concern about

  958. the poor

  959. in a country

  960. like ours

  961. and that's a

  962. very powerful

  963. moment for

  964. Christians to

  965. always remember

  966. the poor

  967. the working

  968. poor

  969. the people

  970. who work

  971. at McDonald's

  972. the people

  973. who work

  974. at places

  975. where there's

  976. no benefits

  977. we have to

  978. have a heart

  979. for them

  980. and a great

  981. concern for

  982. them

  983. next point

  984. you shall

  985. not steal

  986. applies to

  987. individuals

  988. churches

  989. governments

  990. and every

  991. other social

  992. group

  993. one of the

  994. things which

  995. the Bible

  996. hates

  997. and we

  998. have to

  999. you know

  1000. the state

  1001. church in

  1002. Germany

  1003. turned

  1004. fundamentally

  1005. a blind

  1006. eye to

  1007. Nazism

  1008. we all

  1009. know that

  1010. in the

  1011. southern

  1012. United

  1013. States

  1014. and South

  1015. Africa

  1016. the churches

  1017. turned

  1018. many churches

  1019. not all

  1020. but many

  1021. churches

  1022. turned a

  1023. blind eye

  1024. to the

  1025. type of

  1026. racism

  1027. and destruction

  1028. of property

1029. actually this is a bit

  1030. of an aside

  1031. one of the things

  1032. which is really

  1033. interesting

  1034. remember I said

  1035. if you go back

  1036. to that other

  1037. part in

  1038. Deuteronomy

  1039. that gives

  1040. you some

  1041. that Moses

  1042. unpacks

  1043. you shall

  1044. not steal

  1045. there's only

  1046. one

  1047. property

  1048. only one

  1049. type of

  1050. stealing

  1051. which deserves

  1052. the death

  1053. penalty

  1054. one of the

  1055. things which is so

  1056. powerful about the

  1057. Old Testament

  1058. and you think of

  1059. how in some

  1060. cultures thieves

  1061. in fact

  1062. lamentably in our

  1063. own culture

  1064. they would hang

  1065. I mean hundreds

  1066. of years ago

  1067. they would hang

  1068. thieves

  1069. in some parts

  1070. of the world

  1071. they'll cut off

  1072. the hands

  1073. of thieves

  1074. but in the

  1075. Old Testament

  1076. people who

  1077. stole

  1078. they were

  1079. required

  1080. to give

  1081. the stuff

  1082. back

  1083. they couldn't

  1084. cut off

  1085. their hands

  1086. or kill

  1087. them

  1088. there's only

  1089. one exception

  1090. only one

  1091. type of

  1092. theft

  1093. had a

  1094. capital

  1095. punishment

  1096. kidnapping

  1097. somebody to

  1098. put them

  1099. into slavery

  1100. that was a

  1101. capital

  1102. offense

  1103. if that

  1104. text

  1105. had grasped

  1106. Christians

  1107. earlier

  1108. the entire

  1109. slave trade

  1110. would have

  1111. been seen

  1112. as being

  1113. completely

  1114. wrong

  1115. one of the

  1116. things

  1117. I learned

  1118. when I was

  1119. in Angola

  1120. is that

  1121. Angola

  1122. was one of

  1123. the hardest

  1124. countries

  1125. in Africa

  1126. hit

  1127. by the

  1128. slave trade

  1129. not only

  1130. were there

  1131. some tribes

  1132. working with

  1133. the Portuguese

  1134. to capture

  1135. and kidnap

  1136. other people

  1137. from other

  1138. tribes

  1139. but they'd

  1140. sell them

  1141. into slavery

  1142. so in

  1143. Brazil

  1144. a large

  1145. number of

  1146. Brazilians

  1147. are more

  1148. like they're

  1149. from Africa

  1150. they all

  1151. came from

  1152. Angola

  1153. for Angolans

  1154. it's a

  1155. very very

  1156. slavery

  1157. is something

  1158. which is

  1159. deeply still

  1160. part of

  1161. their

  1162. consciousness

  1163. because

  1164. so much

  1165. of their

  1166. history

  1167. was consumed

  1168. with the

  1169. slave trade

  1170. but if

  1171. people had

  1172. read the

  1173. book of

  1174. Deuteronomy

  1175. if they

  1176. had grasped

  1177. you shall

  1178. not steal

  1179. and saw

  1180. how Moses

  1181. helped to

  1182. unpack it

  1183. the worst

  1184. type of

  1185. thievery

  1186. was to

  1187. capture

  1188. somebody

  1189. for slavery

  1190. one other

  1191. tiny little

  1192. thing I'm

  1193. going to get

  1194. in trouble

  1195. maybe for

  1196. this by

  1197. some people

  1198. and I

  1199. don't I

  1200. know for

  1201. some people

  1202. our culture

  1203. has turned a

  1204. blind eye

  1205. to this

  1206. this is an

  1207. example I

  1208. think of how

  1209. our culture

  1210. allows a

  1211. certain type

  1212. of theft

  1213. without us

  1214. realizing it

  1215. is theft

  1216. but in

  1217. vitro

  1218. fertilization

  1219. means that

  1220. you get

  1221. fertilized

  1222. eggs and

  1223. you freeze

  1224. them and

  1225. you keep

  1226. them

  1227. how is

  1228. that different

  1229. than slavery

  1230. if you have

  1231. fertilized

  1232. eggs

  1233. Louise and

  1234. I decided

  1235. before we

  1236. got a bit

  1237. too old

  1238. that we

  1239. were going

  1240. to get a

  1241. whole pile

  1242. of embryos

  1243. fertilized

  1244. embryos

  1245. together and

  1246. freeze them

  1247. and we

  1248. keep that

  1249. for years

  1250. and years

  1251. and years

  1252. and years

  1253. how is that

  1254. not like

  1255. slavery

  1256. how can I

  1257. own another

  1258. human life

  1259. how can I

  1260. own a human

  1261. life and

  1262. just decide

  1263. whether or not

  1264. I will have

  1265. that life

  1266. put to

  1267. death

  1268. or sold

  1269. for profit

  1270. I know

  1271. this can be

  1272. very painful

  1273. for people

  1274. who are

  1275. trying to

  1276. get pregnant

  1277. but is

  1278. this in

  1279. fact a

  1280. way that

  1281. our culture

  1282. has turned

  1283. a blind eye

  1284. to slavery

  1285. to theft

  1286. Portuguese

  1287. are terrible

  1288. but we're

  1289. not

  1290. next point

  1291. we need

  1292. to sort

  1293. of wrap

  1294. this up

  1295. one of the

  1296. things that

  1297. came to me

  1298. immediately

  1299. when I was

  1300. thinking about

  1301. this you

  1302. shall not

  1303. steal

  1304. is of course

  1305. Jesus

  1306. there's I

  1307. think about

  1308. ten times

  1309. in the

  1310. New Testament

  1311. it says

  1312. Jesus will

  1313. come like

  1314. a thief

  1315. in the

  1316. night

  1317. and

  1318. it's

  1319. very true

  1320. Jesus

  1321. will come

  1322. like a

  1323. thief

  1324. in the

  1325. night

  1326. but he

  1327. is not

  1328. a thief

  1329. this

  1330. text

  1331. in closing

  1332. helps us

  1333. to think

  1334. of two

  1335. things

  1336. which helps

  1337. to also

  1338. bring this

  1339. whole text

  1340. of you

  1341. shall not

  1342. steal

  1343. closer to

  1344. home

  1345. to us

  1346. because

  1347. the fact

  1348. of the

  1349. matter

  1350. is

  1351. is that

  1352. for every

  1353. human

  1354. being

  1355. including

  1356. Christians

  1357. one of

  1358. the worries

  1359. that we

  1360. have

  1361. is that

  1362. Jesus

  1363. as he

  1364. gets

  1365. closer

  1366. to us

  1367. will

  1368. steal

  1369. from

  1370. us

  1371. how

  1372. will he

  1373. steal

  1374. from

  1375. us

  1376. he'll

  1377. steal

  1378. our

  1379. time

  1380. he'll

  1381. steal

  1382. our

  1383. money

  1384. he'll

  1385. make

  1386. a

  1387. demand

  1388. upon

  1389. me

  1390. in terms

  1391. of how

  1392. much

  1393. money

  1394. I

  1395. should

  1396. be

  1397. giving

  1398. he'll

  1399. make

  1400. a

  1401. demand

  1402. upon

  1403. me

  1404. in terms

  1405. of

  1406. my

  1407. time

  1408. he'll

  1409. make

  1410. a

  1411. demand

  1412. upon

  1413. me

  1414. in

  1415. terms

  1416. of

  1417. how

  1418. I

  1419. should

  1420. treat

  1421. my

  1422. wife

  1423. or

  1424. how

  1425. I

  1426. should

  1427. treat

  1428. my

  1429. kids

  1430. and

  1431. that's

  1432. completely

  1433. separate

  1434. from

  1435. conversion

  1436. a long

  1437. time

  1438. ago

  1439. there

  1440. was a

  1441. young

  1442. woman

  1443. I

  1444. was

  1445. part

  1446. of

  1447. a

  1448. Christian

  1449. fellowship

  1450. group

  1451. and she

  1452. became a

  1453. Christian

  1454. and she

  1455. came

  1456. she was

  1457. pretty

  1458. messed up

  1459. and

  1460. she

  1461. started

  1462. to get

  1463. sorted

  1464. out

  1465. but

  1466. then

  1467. one

  1468. of

  1469. the

  1470. things

  1471. was

  1472. and I've

  1473. seen

  1474. this

  1475. many

  1476. many

  1477. times

  1478. since

  1479. then

  1480. her

  1481. family

  1482. put

  1483. profound

  1484. pressure

  1485. on her

  1486. to stop

  1487. being

  1488. connected

  1489. with

  1490. us

  1491. even

  1492. though

  1493. she'd

  1494. stopped

  1495. sleeping

  1496. around

  1497. even

  1498. though

  1499. she'd

  1500. stopped

  1501. drinking

  1502. I mean

  1503. getting

  1504. drunk

  1505. even

  1506. though

  1507. she'd

  1508. stopped

  1509. doing

  1510. her

  1511. drugs

  1512. the

  1513. fact

  1514. that

  1515. she

  1516. was

  1517. getting

  1518. close

  1519. to

  1520. Jesus

  1521. profoundly

  1522. worried

  1523. them

  1524. and

  1525. they

  1526. put

  1527. unrelenting

  1528. social

  1529. pressure

  1530. and

  1531. familial

  1532. pressure

  1533. on

  1534. her

  1535. to

  1536. not

  1537. have

  1538. anything

  1539. to do

  1540. with

  1541. this

  1542. and

  1543. they

  1544. eventually

  1545. were

  1546. successful

  1547. at

  1548. it

  1549. and

  1550. not

  1551. that

  1552. just

  1553. that

  1554. people

  1555. who

  1556. come

  1557. to

  1558. Jesus

  1559. can

  1560. instantly

  1561. stop

  1562. doing

  1563. all

  1564. of

  1565. those

  1566. bad

  1567. things

  1568. we

  1569. struggle

  1570. with

  1571. all

  1572. of

  1573. them

  1574. but

  1575. she

  1576. eventually

  1577. went

  1578. back

  1579. to

  1580. all

  1581. of

  1582. those

  1583. things

  1584. but

  1585. they

  1586. were

  1587. worried

  1588. that

  1589. Jesus

  1590. was

  1591. stealing

  1592. her

  1593. from

  1594. them

  1595. so

  1596. Jesus

  1597. will

  1598. come

  1599. like

  1600. a

  1601. thief

  1602. in

  1603. the

  1604. night

  1605. but

  1606. he

  1607. is

  1608. not

  1609. a

  1610. thief

  1611. final

  1612. second

  1613. to

  1614. last

  1615. point

  1616. Andrew

  1617. if

  1618. you

  1619. could

  1620. put

  1621. it

  1622. up

  1623. if

  1624. you

  1625. turn

  1626. in

  1627. your

  1628. Bibles

  1629. to

  1630. John

    John 10 chapter mention

  1631. chapter

  1632. 10

  1633. there's

  1634. a

  1635. very

  1636. very

  1637. wonderful

  1638. text

  1639. here

  1640. that

  1641. connects

  1642. thievery

  1643. to

  1644. who

  1645. Jesus

  1646. is

  1647. it's

  1648. the

  1649. text

  1650. of

  1651. Jesus

  1652. being

  1653. the

  1654. good

  1655. shepherd

  1656. and

  1657. it's

  1658. a

  1659. very

  1660. very

  1661. wonderful

  1662. text

  1663. and

  1664. it

  1665. goes

  1666. like

  1667. this

  1668. Jesus

  1669. is

  1670. speaking

  1671. truly

  1672. truly

  1673. I

  1674. say

  1675. to

  1676. you

  1677. he

  1678. who

  1679. does

  1680. not

  1681. enter

  1682. the

  1683. sheep

  1684. bull

  1685. by

  1686. the

  1687. door

  1688. but

  1689. climbs

  1690. in

  1691. by

  1692. another

  1693. way

  1694. that

  1695. man

  1696. is

  1697. a

  1698. thief

  1699. and

  1700. a

  1701. robber

  1702. but

  1703. he

  1704. who

  1705. enters

  1706. by

  1707. the

  1708. door

  1709. is

  1710. the

  1711. shepherd

  1712. of

  1713. the

  1714. sheep

  1715. to

  1716. him

  1717. the

  1718. gatekeeper

  1719. opens

  1720. the

  1721. sheep

  1722. hear

  1723. his

  1724. voice

  1725. and he

  1726. calls

  1727. his

  1728. own

  1729. sheep

  1730. by

  1731. name

  1732. and

  1733. leads

  1734. them

  1735. out

  1736. when

  1737. he

  1738. has

  1739. brought

  1740. out

  1741. all

  1742. his

  1743. own

  1744. he

  1745. goes

  1746. before

  1747. them

  1748. and

  1749. the

  1750. sheep

  1751. follow

  1752. him

  1753. for

  1754. they

  1755. know

  1756. his

  1757. voice

  1758. a

  1759. stranger

  1760. they

  1761. will

  1762. not

  1763. follow

  1764. but

  1765. they

  1766. will

  1767. flee

  1768. from

  1769. him

  1770. for

  1771. they

  1772. do

  1773. not

  1774. know

  1775. the

  1776. voice

  1777. of

  1778. strangers

  1779. now

  1780. John

  1781. comments

  1782. this

  1783. figure

  1784. of

  1785. speech

  1786. Jesus

  1787. used

  1788. with

  1789. them

  1790. but

  1791. they

  1792. did

  1793. not

  1794. understand

  1795. what

  1796. he

  1797. was

  1798. saying

  1799. to

  1800. them

  1801. so

  1802. truly

  1803. truly

  1804. I

  1805. say

  1806. to

  1807. you

  1808. I

  1809. am

  1810. the

  1811. door

  1812. of

  1813. the

  1814. sheep

  1815. all

  1816. who

  1817. came

  1818. before

  1819. me

  1820. are

  1821. thieves

  1822. and

  1823. robbers

  1824. but

  1825. the

  1826. sheep

  1827. did

  1828. not

  1829. listen

  1830. to

  1831. them

  1832. I

  1833. am

  1834. the

  1835. door

  1836. if

  1837. anyone

  1838. enters

  1839. by

  1840. me

  1841. he

  1842. will

  1843. be

  1844. saved

  1845. and

  1846. will

  1847. go

  1848. in

  1849. and

  1850. out

  1851. and

  1852. find

  1853. pasture

  1854. the

  1855. thief

  1856. comes

  1857. only

  1858. to

  1859. steal

  1860. and

  1861. kill

  1862. and

  1863. destroy

  1864. I

  1865. came

  1866. that

  1867. they

  1868. may

  1869. have

  1870. life

  1871. and

  1872. have

  1873. it

  1874. abundantly

  1875. I

  1876. am

  1877. the

  1878. good

  1879. shepherd

  1880. the

  1881. good

  1882. shepherd

  1883. lays

  1884. down

  1885. his

  1886. life

  1887. for

  1888. the

  1889. sheep

  1890. now

  1891. here

  1892. Jesus

  1893. is

  1894. talking

  1895. specifically

  1896. about

  1897. his

  1898. death

  1899. on

  1900. the

  1901. cross

  1902. you

  1903. know

  1904. if

  1905. it

  1906. was

  1907. taken

  1908. literally

  1909. as

  1910. an

  1911. advice

  1912. to

  1913. shepherds

  1914. the

  1915. second

  1916. the

  1917. shepherd

  1918. dies

  1919. the

  1920. sheep

  1921. are

  1922. all

  1923. toast

  1924. but

  1925. he's

  1926. getting

  1927. at a

  1928. very

  1929. very

  1930. important

  1931. point

  1932. that

  1933. when

  1934. Jesus

  1935. comes

  1936. into

  1937. a

  1938. person's

  1939. life

  1940. he

  1941. doesn't

  1942. come

  1943. as

  1944. an

  1945. invader

  1946. or

  1947. as

  1948. a

  1949. thief

  1950. he

  1951. comes

  1952. to

  1953. his

  1954. own

  1955. remember

  1956. earlier

  1957. I

  1958. said

  1959. all

  1960. things

  1961. come

  1962. of

  1963. you

  1964. and

  1965. of

  1966. your

  1967. own

  1968. have

  1969. we

  1970. given

  1971. you

  1972. so

  1973. when

  1974. Jesus

  1975. comes

  1976. into

  1977. any

  1978. person's

  1979. life

  1980. he's

  1981. coming

  1982. to

  1983. what

  1984. is

  1985. his

  1986. own

  1987. and

  1988. in

  1989. this

  1990. text

  1991. Jesus

  1992. very

  1993. powerfully

  1994. says

  1995. I

  1996. don't

  1997. know

  1998. how

  1999. many

  2000. of

  2001. you

  2002. have

  2003. been

  2004. robbed

  2005. but

  2006. it's

  2007. it can

  2008. be very

  2009. destructive

  2010. I don't

  2011. know how

  2012. many of

  2013. you have

  2014. had a

  2015. house

  2016. broken

  2017. into

  2018. but it

  2019. can feel

  2020. like a

  2021. profound

  2022. violation

  2023. to have

  2024. had somebody

  2025. come into

  2026. your house

  2027. and to

  2028. rob you

  2029. I

  2030. remember

  2031. back

  2032. when

  2033. Louise

  2034. and

  2035. I

  2036. hadn't

  2037. been

  2038. married

  2039. very

  2040. long

  2041. and

  2042. I

  2043. was

  2044. a

  2045. student

  2046. and

  2047. we

  2048. had

  2049. no

  2050. money

  2051. and

  2052. I

  2053. remember

  2054. there

  2055. was

  2056. this

  2057. time

  2058. we were

  2059. at the

  2060. corner of

  2061. bank

  2062. and

  2063. fifth

  2064. and

  2065. I

  2066. think

  2067. we

  2068. had

  2069. Jesse

  2070. or

  2071. something

  2072. in

  2073. the

  2074. stroller

  2075. and

  2076. I

  2077. had

  2078. Tosh

  2079. by

  2080. the

  2081. hand

  2082. and

  2083. we

  2084. just

  2085. turned

  2086. our

  2087. eye

  2088. away

  2089. for

  2090. a

  2091. second

  2092. and

  2093. somebody

  2094. took

  2095. Louise's

  2096. purse

  2097. you

  2098. know

  2099. I

  2100. don't

  2101. know

  2102. what

  2103. it

  2104. was

  2105. might

  2106. have

  2107. been

  2108. a

  2109. hundred

  2110. bucks

  2111. but

  2112. that

  2113. was

  2114. a

  2115. lot

  2116. of

  2117. money

  2118. especially

  2119. when

  2120. you're

  2121. poor

  2122. like

  2123. and

  2124. in

  2125. those

  2126. days

  2127. you

  2128. know

  2129. for

  2130. many

  2131. many

  2132. years

  2133. I

  2134. wasn't

  2135. able

  2136. to

  2137. get

  2138. a

  2139. credit

  2140. card

  2141. or

  2142. anything

  2143. like

  2144. that

  2145. and

  2146. I

  2147. didn't

  2148. have

  2149. a

  2150. line

  2151. of

  2152. credit

  2153. so

  2154. when

  2155. you're

  2156. out

  2157. money

  2158. you're

  2159. out

  2160. money

  2161. like

  2162. it's

  2163. really

  2164. hard

  2165. it's

  2166. destructive

  2167. and

  2168. Jesus

  2169. here

  2170. uses

  2171. a

  2172. very

  2173. powerful

  2174. image

  2175. when

  2176. he

  2177. says

  2178. up

  2179. here

  2180. the

  2181. thief

  2182. comes

  2183. only

  2184. to

  2185. steal

  2186. and

  2187. to

  2188. kill

  2189. and

  2190. the

  2191. word

  2192. there

  2193. kill

  2194. it's

  2195. a

  2196. perfectly

  2197. good

  2198. word

  2199. but

  2200. it's

  2201. sheep

  2202. right

  2203. in

  2204. other

  2205. words

  2206. the

  2207. thief

  2208. steals

  2209. the

  2210. sheep

  2211. to

  2212. kill

  2213. it

  2214. and

  2215. eat

  2216. it

  2217. that's

  2218. what

  2219. the

  2220. word

  2221. kill

  2222. there

  2223. means

  2224. and

  2225. to

  2226. destroy

  2227. we

  2228. all

  2229. probably

  2230. have

  2231. seen

  2232. houses

  2233. that

  2234. have

  2235. been

  2236. broken

  2237. into

  2238. and

  2239. part

  2240. of

  2241. the

  2242. things

  2243. that

  2244. and

  2245. it's

  2246. very

  2247. easy

  2248. for

  2249. us

  2250. to

  2251. think

  2252. that

  2253. when

  2254. we

  2255. get

  2256. closer

  2257. to

  2258. Jesus

  2259. he's

  2260. going

  2261. to

  2262. mess

  2263. up

  2264. our

  2265. lives

  2266. he's

  2267. going

  2268. to

  2269. make

  2270. us

  2271. poorer

  2272. and

  2273. many

  2274. non-Christians

  2275. have

  2276. that

  2277. fear

  2278. and

  2279. if

  2280. we're

  2281. honest

  2282. many

  2283. of

  2284. us

  2285. Christians

  2286. have

  2287. that

  2288. fear

  2289. but

  2290. Jesus

  2291. says

  2292. I

  2293. have

  2294. come

  2295. I

  2296. came

  2297. that

  2298. they

  2299. may

  2300. have

  2301. life

  2302. and

  2303. have

  2304. it

  2305. abundantly

  2306. I

  2307. am

  2308. the

  2309. good

  2310. shepherd

  2311. the

  2312. good

  2313. shepherd

  2314. lays

  2315. down

  2316. his

  2317. life

  2318. for

  2319. the

  2320. sheep

  2321. and

  2322. if

  2323. you

  2324. go

  2325. down

  2326. and

  2327. read

  2328. a

  2329. little

  2330. bit

  2331. later

  2332. you'll

  2333. see

  2334. that

  2335. in

  2336. four

  2337. more

  2338. verses

  2339. Jesus

  2340. repeats

  2341. it

  2342. to

  2343. make

  2344. sure

  2345. that

  2346. we

  2347. get

  2348. the

  2349. point

  2350. lays

  2351. down

  2352. his

  2353. life

  2354. for

  2355. the

  2356. sheep

  2357. the

  2358. thief

  2359. kills

  2360. the

  2361. sheep

  2362. Jesus

  2363. dies

  2364. for

  2365. the

  2366. sheep

  2367. he

  2368. dies

  2369. for

  2370. the

  2371. sheep

  2372. to

  2373. give

  2374. us

  2375. abundant

  2376. life

  2377. it

  2378. can

  2379. be

  2380. very

  2381. easy

  2382. to

  2383. think

  2384. if

  2385. disobey

  2386. the

  2387. commandment

  2388. about

  2389. stealing

  2390. and

  2391. do

  2392. things

  2393. on

  2394. my

  2395. income

  2396. tax

  2397. form

  2398. so

  2399. I

  2400. get

  2401. more

  2402. money

  2403. everybody

  2404. does

  2405. it

  2406. it's

  2407. just

  2408. the

  2409. government

  2410. they

  2411. won't

  2412. miss

  2413. it

  2414. they

  2415. just

  2416. waste

  2417. it

  2418. and

  2419. I

  2420. can

  2421. do

  2422. whatever

  2423. I

  2424. want

  2425. and

  2426. if

  2427. I

  2428. do

  2429. it

  2430. I'll

  2431. have

  2432. more

  2433. money

  2434. and

  2435. if

  2436. I

  2437. don't

  2438. my

  2439. life's

  2440. going

  2441. to

  2442. be

  2443. a

  2444. little

  2445. bit

  2446. tighter

  2447. harder

  2448. it's

  2449. going

  2450. to

  2451. be

  2452. a

  2453. little

  2454. bit

  2455. harder

  2456. but

  2457. this

  2458. text

  2459. is

  2460. saying

  2461. to

  2462. us

  2463. that

  2464. when

  2465. we

  2466. hear

  2467. the

  2468. voice

  2469. of

  2470. Jesus

  2471. and

  2472. follow

  2473. him

  2474. even

  2475. commandments

  2476. like

  2477. this

  2478. that

  2479. seem

  2480. at

  2481. times

  2482. that

  2483. are

  2484. going

  2485. to

  2486. crimp

  2487. our

  2488. lives

  2489. it's

  2490. actually

  2491. part

  2492. of

  2493. the

  2494. process

  2495. by

  2496. which

  2497. our

  2498. lives

  2499. will

  2500. get

  2501. abundance

  2502. from

  2503. God

  2504. even

  2505. if

  2506. it's

  2507. abundance

  2508. of

  2509. being

  2510. able

  2511. to

  2512. sleep

  2513. at

  2514. night

  2515. you

  2516. know

  2517. there's

  2518. that

  2519. a

  2520. clean

  2521. conscience

  2522. is

  2523. the

  2524. softest

  2525. pillow

  2526. you

  2527. know

  2528. you

  2529. get

  2530. a

  2531. thing

  2532. from

  2533. the

  2534. government

  2535. later

  2536. on

  2537. you're

  2538. not

  2539. worried

  2540. that

  2541. they've

  2542. caught

  2543. your

  2544. cheating

  2545. on

  2546. your

  2547. taxes

  2548. but

  2549. however

  2550. it is

  2551. that

  2552. Jesus

  2553. does

  2554. it

  2555. abundant

  2556. life

  2557. doesn't

  2558. mean

  2559. that

  2560. if

  2561. you

  2562. follow

  2563. do

  2564. not

  2565. steal

  2566. you're

  2567. going

  2568. to

  2569. be

  2570. richer

  2571. it

  2572. just

  2573. means

  2574. that

  2575. you're

  2576. going

  2577. to

  2578. have

  2579. a

  2580. life

  2581. which

  2582. is

  2583. far

  2584. more

  2585. abundant

  2586. and

  2587. unexpected

  2588. in

  2589. terms

  2590. of

  2591. things

  2592. which

  2593. ultimately

  2594. really

  2595. matter

  2596. the

  2597. most

  2598. and

  2599. the

  2600. other

  2601. thing

  2602. about

  2603. this

  2604. text

  2605. which

  2606. is

  2607. so

  2608. powerful

  2609. that

  2610. is

  2611. as

  2612. it

  2613. gets

  2614. as

  2615. it

  2616. grips

  2617. us

  2618. that

  2619. Jesus

  2620. isn't

  2621. a

  2622. thief

  2623. that

  2624. Jesus

  2625. is

  2626. the

  2627. good

  2628. shepherd

  2629. that

  2630. lays

  2631. down

  2632. his

  2633. life

  2634. for

  2635. the

  2636. sheep

  2637. as

  2638. this

  2639. image

  2640. grips

  2641. us

  2642. as

  2643. the

  2644. cross

  2645. grips

  2646. us

  2647. it

  2648. starts

  2649. to

  2650. make

  2651. us

  2652. understand

  2653. that

  2654. the

  2655. way

  2656. we

  2657. are

  2658. to

  2659. live

  2660. our

  2661. lives

  2662. is

  2663. to

  2664. care

  2665. for

  2666. people

  2667. that

  2668. as

  2669. the

  2670. good

  2671. shepherd

  2672. lays

  2673. down

  2674. his

  2675. life

  2676. for

  2677. the

  2678. sheep

  2679. becomes

  2680. more

  2681. powerful

  2682. in

  2683. our

  2684. lives

  2685. it

  2686. helps

  2687. to

  2688. form

  2689. the

  2690. way

  2691. a

  2692. dad

  2693. should

  2694. be

  2695. a

  2696. dad

  2697. or

  2698. a

  2699. mom

  2700. should

  2701. be

  2702. a

  2703. mom

  2704. a

  2705. pastor

  2706. a

  2707. pastor

  2708. a

  2709. teacher

  2710. should

  2711. be

  2712. a

  2713. teacher

  2714. a

  2715. banker

  2716. should

  2717. be

  2718. a

  2719. banker

  2720. a

  2721. friend

  2722. should

  2723. be

  2724. a

  2725. friend

  2726. it

  2727. sort

  2728. of

  2729. paints

  2730. a

  2731. picture

  2732. for

  2733. us

  2734. as

  2735. to

  2736. what

  2737. we

  2738. should

  2739. be

  2740. moving

  2741. towards

  2742. and

  2743. as

  2744. the

  2745. reassurance

  2746. that

  2747. we

  2748. have

  2749. become

  2750. Jesus

  2751. is

  2752. because

  2753. of

  2754. what

  2755. he's

  2756. done

  2757. for

  2758. us

  2759. not

  2760. because

  2761. of

  2762. what

  2763. we

  2764. can

  2765. do

  2766. for

  2767. him

  2768. the

  2769. text

  2770. doesn't

  2771. say

  2772. if

  2773. you

  2774. do

  2775. not

  2776. steal

  2777. you

  2778. will

  2779. become

  2780. my

  2781. disciple

  2782. but

  2783. Jesus

  2784. dies

  2785. for us

  2786. so that

  2787. we

  2788. will

  2789. be

  2790. his

  2791. and

  2792. as

  2793. this

  2794. grips

  2795. us

  2796. as

  2797. well

  2798. it

  2799. starts

  2800. to

  2801. make

  2802. reasonable

  2803. and

  2804. make

  2805. sense

  2806. a

  2807. completely

  2808. different

  2809. way

  2810. of

  2811. living

  2812. put

  2813. up

  2814. the

  2815. final

  2816. point

  2817. please

  2818. you

  2819. know

  2820. I

  2821. like

  2822. to

  2823. do

  2824. this

  2825. often

  2826. is

  2827. to

  2828. end

  2829. with

  2830. a

  2831. prayer

  2832. I'm

  2833. going to

  2834. ask

  2835. you

  2836. to

  2837. stand

  2838. in

  2839. some

  2840. ways

  2841. the

  2842. whole

  2843. summary

  2844. of

  2845. the

  2846. sermon

  2847. is

  2848. caught

  2849. up

  2850. in

  2851. this

  2852. I'll

  2853. read

  2854. it

  2855. out

  2856. first

  2857. and

  2858. then

  2859. I'll

  2860. enjoy

  2861. and

  2862. ask

  2863. you

  2864. to

  2865. join

  2866. with

  2867. me

  2868. please

  2869. help

  2870. me

  2871. to

  2872. recognize

  2873. stealing

  2874. is

  2875. stealing

  2876. I

  2877. mean

  2878. that's

  2879. just

  2880. the

  2881. thing

  2882. any

  2883. one

  2884. of

  2885. the

  2886. Ten

  2887. Commandments

  2888. it's

  2889. one

  2890. of

  2891. the

  2892. reasons

  2893. if

  2894. we

  2895. do

  2896. the

  2897. Ten

  2898. Commandments

  2899. liturgically

  2900. I think

  2901. after every

  2902. one of the

  2903. commandments

  2904. we say

  2905. something

  2906. about

  2907. write

  2908. this

  2909. law

  2910. in

  2911. our

  2912. heart

  2913. and

  2914. writing

  2915. the

  2916. law

  2917. in

  2918. our

  2919. heart

  2920. means

  2921. that

  2922. we

  2923. know

  2924. it

  2925. that

  2926. we

  2927. remember

  2928. it

  2929. that

  2930. it

  2931. starts

  2932. to

  2933. have

  2934. an

  2935. impact

  2936. in

  2937. our

  2938. heart

  2939. but

  2940. stealing

  2941. opens

  2942. up

  2943. to

  2944. us

  2945. not

  2946. just

  2947. that

  2948. we

  2949. shouldn't

  2950. steal

  2951. that

  2952. we

  2953. start

  2954. to

  2955. recognize

  2956. stealing

  2957. but

  2958. we

  2959. ask

  2960. Jesus

  2961. to

  2962. help

  2963. us

  2964. so

  2965. that

  2966. we're

  2967. gripped

  2968. by

  2969. the

  2970. gospel

  2971. and

  2972. as

  2973. we're

  2974. gripped

  2975. by

  2976. the

  2977. gospel

  2978. from

  2979. that

  2980. context

  2981. we

  2982. don't

  2983. steal

  2984. but

  2985. instead

  2986. that

  2987. we

  2988. pursue

  2989. a

  2990. productive

  2991. and

  2992. generous

  2993. life

  2994. as

  2995. we

  2996. live

  2997. for

  2998. his

  2999. glory

  3000. we

  3001. die

  3002. to

  3003. our

  3004. own

  3005. glory

  3006. we

  3007. die

  3008. to

  3009. just

  3010. viewing

  3011. life

  3012. as

  3013. accumulating

  3014. as

  3015. much

  3016. as

  3017. we

  3018. can

  3019. we

  3020. understand

  3021. that

  3022. a

  3023. type

  3024. of

  3025. dying

  3026. for

  3027. others

  3028. and

  3029. so

  3030. I

  3031. invite

  3032. you

  3033. to

  3034. join

  3035. with

  3036. me

  3037. in

  3038. praying

  3039. this

  3040. prayer

  3041. heavenly

  3042. father

  3043. please

  3044. help

  3045. me

  3046. to

  3047. recognize

  3048. stealing

  3049. is

  3050. stealing

  3051. please

  3052. pour

  3053. out

  3054. your

  3055. holy

  3056. spirit

  3057. upon

  3058. me

  3059. and

  3060. make

  3061. me

  3062. a

  3063. disciple

  3064. of

  3065. Jesus

  3066. gripped

  3067. by

  3068. the

  3069. gospel

  3070. who

  3071. does

  3072. not

  3073. steal

  3074. but

  3075. pursues

  3076. living

  3077. a

  3078. productive

  3079. and

  3080. generous

  3081. life

  3082. as

  3083. I

  3084. live

  3085. for

  3086. your

  3087. glory

  3088. in

  3089. Jesus

  3090. name

  3091. Amen

  3092. father

  3093. we

  3094. ask

  3095. that

  3096. you

  3097. would

  3098. write

  3099. this

  3100. commandment

  3101. do

  3102. not

  3103. steal

  3104. in

  3105. our

  3106. hearts

  3107. and

  3108. we

  3109. ask

  3110. even

  3111. more

  3112. than

  3113. writing

  3114. this

  3115. commandment

  3116. do

  3117. not

  3118. steal

  3119. in

  3120. our

  3121. hearts

  3122. we

  3123. ask

  3124. that

  3125. you

  3126. write

  3127. the

  3128. story

  3129. of

  3130. the

  3131. good

  3132. shepherd

  3133. in

  3134. our

  3135. hearts

  3136. that

  3137. that

  3138. might

  3139. be

  3140. what

  3141. grips

  3142. us

  3143. that

  3144. as

  3145. we

  3146. even

  3147. think

  3148. upon

  3149. these

  3150. commandments

  3151. we

  3152. think

  3153. upon

  3154. you

  3155. our

  3156. good

  3157. shepherd

  3158. who

  3159. laid

  3160. down

  3161. your

  3162. life

  3163. for

  3164. us

  3165. all

  3166. these

  3167. things

  3168. we

  3169. ask

  3170. in

  3171. the

  3172. name

  3173. of

  3174. Jesus

  3175. your

  3176. son

  3177. and

  3178. our

  3179. savior

  3180. amen
