  1. Father, we confess that it's often easy for us to see how the Word, Your Word, applies to other people,

  2. but we, and I include myself, we flatter ourselves too much to detect or hate our own sin.

  3. So, Father, we ask for a mighty work of Your Holy Spirit in our lives as we open Your Word,

  4. that Your Word, Father, would convict our own hearts,

  5. that Your Word would come to the very command center of our lives,

  6. and that You, through Your Word, would do a work of grace deep within us.

  7. And this we ask in the name of Jesus, Your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  8. Please be seated.

  9. So, first a bit of a frivolous matter.

  10. My mic keeps going in and out. Is that just because I'm on a position of a stage, or is it just a monitor issue?

  11. It's just a monitor issue? Okay.

  12. If all of a sudden you just can't hear me wave, actually, I'm going to be asking you to wave for a couple of things.

  13. So, here's the thing. My family knows that I have a problem.

  14. And one of my problems is, well, my family knows I have lots of problems.

  15. But one of my many problems is I have problems with names.

  16. So, on Thanksgiving, when we have some of our kids over, I'm likely to say,

  17. Tommy, no, Jesse, no, Joseph, no, Rocky, no, Gordy, and finally get the right name.

  18. And I even threw a dog's name in there.

  19. Okay. So, I have a problem with that.

  20. And I have...

  21. So, in this story that we're going to be looking at,

  22. the two main characters are Peter and Paul.

  23. I am doomed.

  24. I will not make it through this sermon without messing up the names once, at least.

  25. So, what I want you to do is, if I'm saying Peter when I should be saying Paul,

  26. could somebody who's not fallen asleep wave at me?

  27. And I'll know that either there's a wasp in the room, or I've just got the names mixed up.

  28. So, if you could help me, that would be good.

  29. Now, in a more serious matter, in the Willow Creek Church, I've been told,

  30. they've developed this habit that when they talk about something which is a bit controversial,

  31. that might get people mad, they sort of do a little symbol like this over their head.

  32. And they say, you need to just extend...

  33. We need to extend mercy to everybody,

  34. because we're about to talk about something which could get people riled.

  35. And so, just let's give each other a little bit of mercy to try to talk this through a little bit.

  36. And then the conversation will go a lot better.

  37. So, I'm claiming that this morning, because I'm going to ask a question.

  38. And the question is...

  39. Now you're going to see why I need to have a little bit of mercy,

  40. and for people not to get upset too quickly.

  41. Is racism and prejudice...

  42. Are racism and prejudice more important than purity of the gospel?

  43. Or is the purity of the gospel more important than racism and prejudice?

  44. Now that's a...

  45. And you know what?

  46. I know that's a hot political issue right now.

  47. Those of you who watch football, it's going to be a hot issue.

  48. It's been talked about a lot.

  49. And I know that for a lot of people, it's not just a political issue.

  50. It's a very deeply personal issue.

  51. Because I know there are probably people here who have been profoundly victimized by racism.

  52. And I know I'm an all-white guy.

  53. So, that's why I'm asking for a little bit of mercy.

  54. And the reason I'm asking the question is not because I'm interested in commenting on Colin Kaepernick,

  55. where Black Lives Matter.

  56. It's not...

  57. I'm not doing anything political.

  58. It's because the Bible is asking us this question.

  59. We might not have noticed it when Kent was reading the Galatians text.

  60. But we're going to be looking at Galatians 2 if you want to turn your Bibles.

  61. But in fact, the Bible is asking that question to us.

  62. Is discussing...

  63. Is dealing with racism and prejudice a far more pressing issue than dealing with clarity and the purity of the gospel?

  64. Or is the clarity and purity of the gospel a more important issue to deal with than racism and prejudice?

  65. It's not me doing this to be political.

  66. The Bible is asking us this question.

  67. We maybe didn't recognize it, but it's asking us this question.

  68. So, it'd be a great help for me.

  69. First of all, extend me some mercy.

  70. But it'd be a great help if you took your Bibles and turned to Galatians 2.

  71. Galatians 2.

  72. Galatians 2.

  73. And we're going to start reading at the 11th verse.

  74. And actually, you know what we're going to do?

  75. We're going to start reading at verse 9.

  76. Because if we start at verse 9, the shock of verse 11 is far clearer to us.

  77. Okay?

  78. So, those of you who...

  79. So, if you don't know what's happened, is Paul is dealing with a problem in this church.

  80. And as part of him dealing with a problem, he's recounted some things that have gone on in the past.

  81. And one of the things he shared with them is that a little bit earlier, Paul had initiated on his own behalf,

  82. not because he was in trouble, but he had traveled to Jerusalem to meet with Peter, James, and John.

  83. And Cephas, which you're going to see in this text, that's just another name for Peter.

  84. All the way through the text, I'm going to use the word Peter rather than Cephas.

  85. Because for most of us, that's sort of a clearer way to understand it.

  86. And just one other thing.

  87. The word Gentiles doesn't mean much to most of us anymore.

  88. And so, I'm going to substitute the word pagan for Gentiles.

  89. It's another perfectly good word for it.

  90. And it's, you know, or non-Jews, but I'm going to use the word pagan.

  91. So, just the context.

  92. So, Peter...

  93. I mean, here, I've already done it.

  94. Paul has gone to Jerusalem to see Peter and James and John.

  95. And in verse 9, it tells you what happened after they talked.

  96. In verse 9, it says,

  97. And when James and Peter and John, who seemed to be pillars, that's pillars of the church,

  98. perceived the grace that was given to me, they gave the right hand of fellowship to Barnabas and me.

  99. It's a really good thing.

  100. The right hand of fellowship.

  101. Some of you from...

  102. When I was in a Baptist church growing up, that's how you joined the church.

  103. They extended the right hand of fellowship to you in the front of the church.

  104. And the right hand of fellowship to Barnabas and me, that we should go to the Gentiles or the pagans,

  105. and they to the circumcised.

  106. Only they asked us to remember the poor, the very thing I was eager to do.

  107. But when Peter came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned.

  108. For before certain men came from James, he was eating with the pagans.

  109. But when they came, that's the people claiming to be from James,

  110. Peter drew back and separated himself.

  111. That's from the church in Antioch, fearing that group, the circumcision party.

  112. And the rest of the Jews who were part of the congregation acted hypocritically along with him,

  113. so that even Barnabas was led astray by their hypocrisy.

  114. But when I saw that their conduct was not in step with the truth of the gospel,

  115. I said to Peter before them all,

  116. If you, though a Jew, live like a pagan and not like a Jew,

  117. how can you force the pagans to live like Jews?

  118. Paul, why don't you tell us what you really think?

  119. It's very blunt.

  120. Now, here, just to sort of get the full,

  121. like part of this is a little bit hard for us to understand,

  122. because in Canada, at this point in time in our history,

  123. you know, you go to, if I go to Starbucks or some other coffee place,

  124. there's liable to be a big table,

  125. and you can just get a place on the table to do some work,

  126. have your coffee, your scone,

  127. and, you know, all and sundry are at the table.

  128. And if I get up to go to another table,

  129. nobody thinks it's because I'm mad at them or prejudiced or racist.

  130. It's just because maybe a better table or better spots open up.

  131. So it's a little bit hard for us to get our minds around this.

  132. And just to get, to put it in an imaginative way,

  133. so we understand,

  134. we need the image before us about what's actually just gone on.

  135. So Paul has been in this church in Antioch for a while.

  136. It's a very, very, very multicultural church.

  137. And many of the people in the congregation are pagans who've become Christians,

  138. and they're also completed Jews.

  139. That is, Jewish people who have accepted Jesus as the Messiah,

  140. and now Christians, they're completed Jews.

  141. And it's a mixed congregation.

  142. And maybe Paul has been away for a couple of weeks on a trip or something like that,

  143. a preaching trip or just a break.

  144. And he comes back,

  145. and they've maybe had a prayer time together,

  146. the whole congregation.

  147. And then after the prayer time,

  148. they're going to have something to eat.

  149. And so Paul goes to the buffet table,

  150. and he gets some hummus,

  151. and he gets some tabbouleh,

  152. and he gets some falafel.

  153. And maybe because it's a big celebration,

  154. he gets some roasted goat,

  155. puts it in his bowl,

  156. goes to sit down on the grass,

  157. just as they usually do in groups of eight or ten,

  158. so they can all sort of joke and talk and have some fun.

  159. And he's just sitting there talking.

  160. He notices that as he sits down,

  161. they're all a little bit nervous.

  162. But he just, or looking at him funny.

  163. But he's just eating away,

  164. having a great time.

  165. And then,

  166. and this is the imaginative part,

  167. all of a sudden he starts to think to himself,

  168. he looks around.

  169. And he's the only white guy

  170. with the African Americans

  171. at this group.

  172. That's not that odd.

  173. But he looks around,

  174. and all the white guys and gals

  175. are by themselves in their own groups.

  176. And all the African Americans

  177. are in their own group.

  178. And there's no mixing.

  179. And so he's eating his hummus,

  180. and he's starting to look at this,

  181. and he's thinking to himself,

  182. what went on while I was gone?

  183. And then he sees Peter

  184. just with the white guys.

  185. And he sees Barnabas

  186. just with the white guys.

  187. So Paul steps up,

  188. stands up.

  189. Need some quiet, everybody?

  190. Conversation stops.

  191. And he looks at Peter,

  192. and he says,

  193. if you, though a Jew,

  194. live like a pagan,

  195. and not like a Jew,

  196. how can you force pagans

  197. to live like Jews

  198. in front of them all?

  199. Big shock.

  200. Dead silence.

  201. Red faces.

  202. Now here's the,

  203. here's the,

  204. this really, really,

  205. really important question for us.

  206. I mean,

  207. maybe,

  208. maybe we've been blessed,

  209. and we have some tourists

  210. visiting as guests this morning

  211. from the States

  212. or from some other country.

  213. But we all live in Canada.

  214. So what would we want

  215. a Canadian Christian to do

  216. if they had the courage of Paul,

  217. and they found that the congregation

  218. was sitting in segregated seats?

  219. And what would we,

  220. as Canadian Christians,

  221. want to do?

  222. What would we want

  223. another Canadian Christian to do?

  224. And you know what we would want?

  225. We would want,

  226. let's say it was me

  227. who had the courage.

  228. You would want me

  229. to be able to tell you

  230. that I got up and said,

  231. what you're doing is racist.

  232. What you're doing is prejudiced.

  233. Don't you know

  234. that that's wrong?

  235. Don't you know

  236. that that has caused

  237. lots of pain and suffering

  238. and will continue

  239. to cause pain and suffering?

  240. And you would want me

  241. to have a diatribe

  242. about racism

  243. and prejudice,

  244. and that's what you would

  245. want me to do

  246. because we are all Canadians

  247. and that is not

  248. what Paul does.

  249. That is not what Paul does.

  250. I mean,

  251. this is a bit of a check

  252. because Paul

  253. is going to say

  254. that the gospel

  255. is more important

  256. than dealing with racism.

  257. Remember,

  258. hopefully you're still

  259. giving me some mercy

  260. and we're going to come back

  261. to this,

  262. by the way,

  263. okay?

  264. I'm not telling you,

  265. I'm just trying to tell you

  266. what's going on

  267. in the Bible,

  268. okay?

  269. That's what I'm trying to do.

  270. Listen to what Paul does

  271. in verse 15,

  272. and by the way,

  273. now we're going to read

  274. verses 15 to 21,

  275. and just here's a thing.

  276. I'm preaching from the ESV,

  277. it's the version

  278. which I prefer,

  279. it's what I usually use.

  280. If some of you use the NIV,

  281. the NIV actually has done

  282. something unbelievably helpful.

  283. It's very subtle,

  284. and those of you who read it

  285. might not notice it,

  286. but what the NIV has done

  287. is they put quote marks

  288. that begin at verse 15

  289. and go all the way

  290. to verse 21.

  291. I know,

  292. grammar geek moment,

  293. I put half of you

  294. to sleep by saying that,

  295. but here's the point.

  296. What you need to understand

  297. is that in verses 15 to 21,

  298. you are getting a summary

  299. of what Paul said to Peter.

  300. If you don't understand

  301. what you need to have

  302. firmly fixed in your mind,

  303. I almost asked some volunteer

  304. to come up here

  305. and stand up here

  306. so that I could sort of

  307. act it out

  308. and occasionally just look

  309. and say,

  310. you know,

  311. read these parts,

  312. looking at that person,

  313. because that's what,

  314. if you don't understand that,

  315. then the text

  316. is going to just confuse you

  317. and you'll try to do

  318. all these weird things

  319. to try to make

  320. the text understood.

  321. Just look at verse 15.

  322. We ourselves are Jews

  323. by birth

  324. and not Gentile sinners.

  325. Well, what on earth

  326. does that mean?

  327. In fact,

  328. what we know

  329. is the majority

  330. of the congregation

  331. weren't Jewish people.

  332. So if he's saying this

  333. to the congregation,

  334. it makes no sense.

  335. And all the other things

  336. in this little bit

  337. of the text,

  338. they're not going to

  339. make any sense.

  340. So what you have

  341. to understand

  342. is verses 15 to 21

  343. is a summary

  344. of what Paul

  345. is calling Peter out about

  346. and how he's explaining

  347. why this is an

  348. unbelievably important issue.

  349. So 15 to 21,

  350. now it makes sense,

  351. right?

  352. I don't know,

  353. you know,

  354. maybe if Ken there is,

  355. sorry Ken,

  356. I'm promoting you to Peter.

  357. So you're Peter,

  358. okay,

  359. and I'm just looking at you.

  360. You're all now

  361. dead silent

  362. and I'm looking right

  363. at Peter

  364. and I say to Peter,

  365. Peter,

  366. you and me

  367. are Jews by birth.

  368. That's what you and I are.

  369. We're not pagans.

  370. You know,

  371. before we became Christians,

  372. we didn't go to the temple

  373. to have sex

  374. with the priestess

  375. as a way of worshipping God.

  376. We knew that was wrong.

  377. We know how to keep kosher.

  378. We know how to do

  379. the sacrifices.

  380. You and me,

  381. we are Jews by birth.

  382. We are not pagans

  383. who are by definition

  384. sinners,

  385. according to us Jews.

  386. Verse 16.

  387. Andrew,

  388. could you put this on?

  389. Could you all read

  390. this verse with me?

  391. This is a very important verse.

  392. And you'll notice,

  393. just before we're going to read it,

  394. you'll notice that basically

  395. he says the same thing

  396. three times,

  397. but in slightly different ways

  398. to get the point home.

  399. And so if you could all

  400. read it with me,

  401. that would be very good.

  402. We know that a person

  403. is not justified

  404. by works of the law,

  405. but through faith

  406. in Jesus Christ.

  407. So we also have believed

  408. in Christ Jesus

  409. in order to be justified

  410. by faith in Christ

  411. and not by works of the law.

  412. Because by works of the law,

  413. no one will be justified.

  414. See, he says the same thing

  415. three times,

  416. slightly different

  417. to bring home

  418. the emphasis

  419. that he wants to bring.

  420. And so what does justified mean?

  421. Justified means

  422. it's something

  423. that's done by God

  424. and declared by God.

  425. That's what it means.

  426. It's God declaring

  427. that he's done something.

  428. is that just me?

  429. I did fade out

  430. all of a sudden, right?

  431. Okay, sorry.

  432. Rhythm, good grief.

  433. There it is again.

  434. Should I move?

  435. Am I in a dead spot?

  436. Maybe.

  437. Okay, we'll sort it out later.

  438. Sorry.

  439. So justified.

  440. I mean, look at that.

  441. Again, it says quite a few times

  442. throughout that text,

  443. we know that a person

  444. is not justified

  445. by works of the law

  446. but through faith

  447. in Jesus Christ.

  448. So we also have believed

  449. in Christ Jesus

  450. in order to be justified

  451. by faith in Christ

  452. and not by works of the law

  453. because by works of the law

  454. no one will be justified.

  455. So what does that word

  456. justified mean?

  457. That word means

  458. it's an image

  459. from the law court.

  460. So it's an image

  461. of someone who has authority,

  462. proper authority

  463. to do something

  464. and then make a declaration.

  465. So it's this idea

  466. of authority,

  467. proper authority,

  468. doing something

  469. and declaring something.

  470. And what they do

  471. is they declare innocence

  472. and or they declare

  473. that something

  474. has been made right.

  475. Now,

  476. at a very, very technical,

  477. the most primary meaning

  478. is this idea

  479. that they've been

  480. declared innocent.

  481. And that's a very, very, very

  482. hard thing

  483. for Canadians

  484. to understand, right?

  485. I've shared this before.

  486. The problem in Canada,

  487. it's not a problem.

  488. Thanks be to God

  489. for Canada.

  490. Let's continue to pray

  491. that this will be

  492. a rule of the law.

  493. But because of the influence

  494. of Christianity

  495. in Canada,

  496. we know that we are

  497. innocent until proven guilty.

  498. Right?

  499. That's a product

  500. of the Christian faith

  501. that human beings

  502. against the state

  503. have an integrity

  504. against the state

  505. so that the state

  506. has to prove

  507. that I am guilty.

  508. I do not have to prove

  509. that I am innocent.

  510. That is one of the benefits

  511. of the gospel.

  512. It's been forgotten

  513. in Canada,

  514. but it's a Christian benefit

  515. of the worldview.

  516. But you know what?

  517. In most of the world,

  518. that is not the case.

  519. In fact,

  520. if you think back,

  521. go back and read

  522. the book of Acts later on,

  523. what you see

  524. in the Roman Empire,

  525. if the state

  526. thinks you're guilty,

  527. you have to prove

  528. you're innocent.

  529. The state has

  530. all the cards,

  531. all the power,

  532. and if the state

  533. determines

  534. that you are guilty,

  535. if the state

  536. determines you're a slave

  537. and then have

  538. absolutely no power,

  539. if the state

  540. determines you're a woman

  541. and have no power,

  542. then you have no power.

  543. It doesn't matter

  544. what the person

  545. from a privileged class

  546. has done to you.

  547. You have no status.

  548. You have no rights.

  549. They can do

  550. what they want.

  551. You are not a citizen.

  552. And even citizens

  553. are fundamentally,

  554. basically,

  555. you have to prove

  556. you're innocent.

  557. And so in Paul's time,

  558. when a judge

  559. with authority

  560. declares

  561. they've done something

  562. and they declare

  563. that in fact,

  564. in a sense,

  565. you are a citizen,

  566. you have rights,

  567. and you were innocent,

  568. it's a big thing.

  569. Think back

  570. to some of the books

  571. in some of the instances

  572. in the book of Acts.

  573. When Paul

  574. is preaching

  575. in Jerusalem

  576. and all of a sudden

  577. a riot breaks out.

  578. So what do the soldiers do?

  579. Do the soldiers

  580. come in

  581. and separate everybody

  582. and get them all

  583. in different rooms

  584. and try to figure out

  585. what went on

  586. because everyone

  587. is innocent

  588. until proven guilty?

  589. No.

  590. They grab Paul

  591. because he seems

  592. to have started it

  593. and they whip him.

  594. Why?

  595. Paul is guilty

  596. until he can prove

  597. he's innocent.

  598. That's the way

  599. it is in most of the world.

  600. And it's been

  601. most of the world

  602. in most of the history.

  603. It's probably

  604. how it works

  605. in places like

  606. North Korea

  607. and Saudi Arabia.

  608. The state

  609. has all the power

  610. and unless

  611. you're a privileged group

  612. you are guilty

  613. until proven innocent.

  614. It's hard for us

  615. to understand.

  616. So a better way

  617. to understand

  618. is the same type

  619. of idea.

  620. It's an authoritative

  621. declaration

  622. combined with

  623. the person

  624. in authority

  625. doing something

  626. to declare

  627. that a person

  628. is made right.

  629. And I've shared

  630. this before

  631. but it's a great analogy.

  632. I'll share it again

  633. a few more times

  634. before you start

  635. to all fall off

  636. in sleep.

  637. And a way to understand

  638. what being made right is

  639. is you imagine

  640. that there's a young mom

  641. and her husband's

  642. off on a business trip

  643. or he's off

  644. I don't know

  645. playing golf

  646. with his buddies

  647. and having a long time

  648. at the 19th hole

  649. or whatever it is

  650. but she's home alone

  651. with the kids.

  652. She comes home

  653. she's just really beat

  654. really bush

  655. rough day

  656. she says

  657. I'm just going to

  658. take these three kids

  659. to the family restaurant

  660. around the corner

  661. buy them a meal

  662. have a bit of a break

  663. and come home

  664. and she goes

  665. to the family restaurant

  666. and she has

  667. the restaurant trip

  668. from hell

  669. the kids are actually

  670. pretty well behaved

  671. but the waiters

  672. are rude to her

  673. the waiters

  674. take a long time

  675. the waiters

  676. ignore her

  677. the waiters

  678. make negative comments

  679. about her kids

  680. the waiters

  681. blame the kids

  682. for all the problems

  683. when they're just

  684. being slow

  685. they bring the wrong food

  686. they don't apologize

  687. it is

  688. the restaurant

  689. trip

  690. from hell

  691. to hell

  692. in hell

  693. and she finally

  694. just throws down

  695. her plastic

  696. pays the bill

  697. and she goes out

  698. and she's fighting tears

  699. she's so mad

  700. so hurt

  701. so embarrassed

  702. so angry

  703. and she's walking

  704. out of the restaurant

  705. and as she walks

  706. out of the restaurant

  707. an older woman

  708. is coming in

  709. and the older woman

  710. notices that this woman

  711. is really distressed

  712. and so the older woman

  713. stops her

  714. and says

  715. dear you know

  716. I'm sorry

  717. you look really upset

  718. and the young woman

  719. she's just taken

  720. by the older woman's

  721. kindness

  722. and she just breaks out

  723. and tells her

  724. what happens

  725. and the older woman

  726. says I own this restaurant

  727. I'm going to make it right

  728. and she makes it right

  729. at cost to herself

  730. what might that mean

  731. I'm going to give you

  732. five gift certificates

  733. for free meals

  734. it's on me

  735. I'm going to bring that

  736. the staff's going to be fired

  737. I'm going to bring all the staff

  738. together

  739. I'm going to bring them back

  740. in the back room

  741. I'm going to tell them

  742. how wrong they were

  743. in treating you

  744. they all need some training

  745. some people are going to be fired

  746. I'm going to make some other changes

  747. she has the authority

  748. and at cost to herself

  749. she makes it right

  750. and that's what the Bible

  751. is saying here

  752. we know that a person

  753. is not made right

  754. with God

  755. by works of the law

  756. but through faith

  757. in Jesus Christ

  758. in other words

  759. God is declaring

  760. and acting

  761. to make it right

  762. and it can only be done

  763. by God

  764. it can't be something

  765. that I can just declare

  766. that I'm going to make it right

  767. I can make it

  768. in fact

  769. that's the whole thing

  770. that works of the law are

  771. works of the law

  772. are our attempt

  773. to make it right

  774. you know

  775. and so

  776. what this text is saying

  777. is that

  778. is that God

  779. God

  780. sees our need

  781. he does what needs

  782. to be done

  783. at cost to himself

  784. he has the proper authority

  785. and he makes it

  786. a declaration

  787. that you George

  788. that you

  789. Ken

  790. that you

  791. Shirley

  792. that you

  793. Louise

  794. I have done

  795. what's needed

  796. to be done

  797. to make you innocent

  798. to give you status

  799. to make it right

  800. I declare

  801. that I have done it

  802. and that is now

  803. your status

  804. it's an official

  805. declaration

  806. and you'll notice

  807. there's this contrast

  808. that what doesn't work

  809. is works of the law

  810. and what Paul

  811. is saying here

  812. is it doesn't matter

  813. how much you meditate

  814. doesn't matter

  815. how much you do yoga

  816. it doesn't matter

  817. how many

  818. prayer flags

  819. and prayer wheels

  820. you set in motion

  821. and it doesn't matter

  822. how rich you are

  823. and it doesn't matter

  824. how perfect

  825. your family is

  826. and it doesn't matter

  827. how good you are

  828. at keeping kosher

  829. and it doesn't matter

  830. whether you make trips

  831. to Mecca

  832. and follow Ramadan

  833. it doesn't matter

  834. whatever your religion is

  835. whatever your spirituality is

  836. whatever your moral code is

  837. whatever your standard

  838. of success is

  839. even if it's the one

  840. that I myself wrote

  841. that all these things

  842. do show

  843. is show

  844. that you cannot

  845. keep them

  846. and none of them

  847. will work

  848. Paul uses

  849. example

  850. works of the law

  851. because God himself

  852. to his people

  853. has given them

  854. a whole range of things

  855. of moral commands

  856. of helping them

  857. to understand

  858. that they have to be

  859. clean in his sight

  860. they have to be

  861. holy in his sight

  862. they have to be

  863. pure in his sight

  864. that

  865. and the whole point

  866. of the law

  867. was that people

  868. couldn't actually

  869. keep it

  870. and in Romans

    Romans 2 chapter mention

  871. chapter 2

  872. Paul extends

  873. this to show

  874. that God

  875. what is going to be

  876. shown fair

  877. that if people say

  878. well listen

  879. I didn't understand

  880. that it was wrong

  881. for me to cheat

  882. on my taxes

  883. I didn't understand

  884. that it was wrong

  885. for me to cheat

  886. on my wife

  887. I didn't understand

  888. that I had to have

  889. a concern for the poor

  890. I didn't have

  891. an understanding

  892. that sometimes

  893. I had to turn

  894. the other cheek

  895. it's not fair

  896. if you find me guilty

  897. God

  898. because I have not

  899. done these things

  900. and Romans 2

  901. brilliantly says

  902. that all God

  903. does in those situations

  904. is say

  905. well that's very fine

  906. and what I'm going to do

  907. is I'm going to give you

  908. a summary of your life

  909. and all the moral judgments

  910. you have made

  911. about other people

  912. and about yourself

  913. and then I'm going to have

  914. that as a standards

  915. I'm going to see

  916. how you lived up

  917. to your own moral standards

  918. and you can't even

  919. keep up to your own

  920. moral standards

  921. like if novelists

  922. are to be believed

  923. even sociopaths

  924. can't keep up

  925. to their own standards

  926. they get mad

  927. at themselves

  928. that they didn't

  929. kill the person

  930. right away

  931. I mean it's a terrible thing

  932. but they can't even

  933. keep up to their own

  934. moral standards

  935. sociopaths

  936. everyone will be silent

  937. before God

  938. and so

  939. what does it say again

  940. we know that a person

  941. is not

  942. going to be made

  943. right with God

  944. or declared right

  945. by God

  946. by God

  947. by our moral efforts

  948. but through faith

  949. in Jesus Christ

  950. so we also have believed

  951. in Christ Jesus

  952. in order to be justified

  953. by faith in Christ

  954. and not by works of the law

  955. because by works of the law

  956. no one

  957. will be justified

  958. and faith in Christ

  959. faith just means

  960. it's a type of trust

  961. and giving

  962. and Jesus

  963. the person of Jesus

  964. and what he's done

  965. for us on the cross

  966. that's what we put

  967. our faith and trust in

  968. not on ourselves

  969. and

  970. and

  971. and all

  972. putting our trust

  973. in something

  974. and in some

  975. or in someone

  976. in this case

  977. putting our trust

  978. and our faith in Jesus

  979. and what he's done

  980. for us on the cross

  981. that always involves

  982. both

  983. a positive thing

  984. and a negative thing

  985. it's a little bit

  986. like a marriage vow

  987. right

  988. in the marriage vow

  989. you

  990. give yourself

  991. to the other person

  992. and you forsake

  993. all others

  994. and that's

  995. that's what faith

  996. in Christ is

  997. that we come to that point

  998. to believe

  999. that Jesus

  1000. has to have done

1001. all that has to be done

1002. for us to be made right

  1003. with God

  1004. and we don't have

  1005. any trust

  1006. in something else

  1007. now some of you

  1008. are going to say

  1009. George

  1010. okay you asked

  1011. to extend

  1012. some mercy

  1013. to you

  1014. about this

  1015. racism thing

  1016. I'm still a little bit

  1017. troubled by it

  1018. I'm a little bit

  1019. conflicted now

  1020. about it

  1021. like what's

  1022. are you saying

  1023. George

  1024. that Christians

  1025. should only have

  1026. these conversations

  1027. about the gospel

  1028. and never confront

  1029. racism and prejudice

  1030. or

  1031. like George

  1032. I'm a little bit

  1033. confused

  1034. there seems to be

  1035. at least a nuance

  1036. or something here

  1037. that I don't know

  1038. if you've got

  1039. it's a very very

  1040. valid concern

  1041. so let's

  1042. let's read

  1043. verses 17 to 19

  1044. and

  1045. now

1046. what we need to do here

  1047. we need to remember

  1048. as we read it

  1049. right

  1050. sorry Ken

1051. I'm going to use you

  1052. as Peter

  1053. and I'm Paul

  1054. again

  1055. right

  1056. we're hearing

  1057. the summary

  1058. of what Paul

  1059. said to Peter

  1060. and everybody's

  1061. listening in

  1062. and what that

  1063. means as well

  1064. is who are

  1065. some of the

  1066. people who've

  1067. been listening

  1068. in

  1069. some of the

  1070. people who are

  1071. listening in

  1072. are the people

  1073. who caused

  1074. the problem

  1075. because you know

  1076. the people who

  1077. caused the problem

  1078. what they

  1079. what they've

  1080. said

  1081. to Peter

  1082. probably

  1083. with their

  1084. is that

  1085. they maybe

  1086. said something

  1087. like this

  1088. to Peter

  1089. Peter

  1090. you know

  1091. Jesus said

  1092. that everything

  1093. in the Old

  1094. Testament

  1095. is God's

  1096. word

  1097. and you

  1098. know

  1099. God's

  1100. word's

  1101. very clear

  1102. you've got

  1103. to keep

  1104. kosher

  1105. you've got

  1106. to practice

  1107. the cleanliness

  1108. laws

  1109. you've got

  1110. to make sure

  1111. that you have

  1112. nothing that's

  1113. even vaguely

  1114. contaminated by

  1115. idolatry

  1116. you've got to

  1117. do this

  1118. you've got to

  1119. do that

  1120. you've got to

  1121. do this

  1122. and Peter

  1123. surely

  1124. you can't be

  1125. talking about

  1126. trusting Jesus

  1127. in such a way

  1128. that now you

  1129. trust Jesus

  1130. and it means

  1131. you're going to

  1132. be sinning

  1133. all the time

  1134. like surely

  1135. it's obvious

  1136. that you need

  1137. to have

  1138. not only

  1139. faith in

  1140. Jesus

  1141. but also

  1142. keep the

  1143. law

  1144. you know

  1145. just as

  1146. some of us

  1147. might say

  1148. George

  1149. surely

  1150. yeah yeah

  1151. yeah yeah

  1152. we understand

  1153. that but

  1154. surely

  1155. you understand

  1156. that you've

  1157. got to not

  1158. only have

  1159. faith in

  1160. Jesus

  1161. but you've

  1162. got to

  1163. have the

  1164. right views

  1165. on abortion

  1166. you've got

  1167. to have the

  1168. right views

  1169. on politics

  1170. you've got

  1171. to be

  1172. Republican

  1173. you've got

  1174. to be

  1175. Democrat

  1176. you have

  1177. to be

  1178. for Trump

  1179. you have

  1180. to be

  1181. against

  1182. Trump

  1183. how on earth

  1184. can you be

  1185. a Christian

  1186. and for

  1187. Trump

  1188. how can

  1189. earth

  1190. can you be

  1191. a Christian

  1192. and be

  1193. against

  1194. Trump

  1195. how can

  1196. you be

  1197. a Christian

  1198. and not

  1199. in favor

  1200. of Black's

  1201. Lives Matter

  1202. how can

  1203. you be

  1204. a Christian

  1205. and not

  1206. do this

  1207. how can

  1208. you be

  1209. a Christian

  1210. and not

  1211. keep

  1212. kosher

  1213. and so

  1214. Paul is

  1215. talking to

  1216. Peter

  1217. and the

  1218. people

  1219. who

  1220. caused

  1221. the

  1222. trouble

  1223. are

  1224. in

  1225. the

  1226. room

  1227. and

  1228. those

  1229. who

  1230. are

  1231. just

  1232. confused

  1233. are

  1234. in

  1235. the

  1236. room

  1237. and

  1238. Peter

  1239. says

  1240. in

  1241. verse 17

  1242. Peter

  1243. but if

  1244. in

  1245. our

  1246. endeavor

  1247. you

  1248. and me

  1249. to be

  1250. justified

  1251. in

  1252. Christ

  1253. we

  1254. too

  1255. were

  1256. found

  1257. to be

  1258. sinners

  1259. is

  1260. Christ

  1261. a servant

  1262. of sin

  1263. certainly

  1264. not

  1265. what's

  1266. he saying

  1267. here

  1268. he's

  1269. referring

  1270. to

  1271. what

  1272. people

  1273. say

  1274. George

  1275. you're

  1276. a Christian

  1277. and you're

  1278. for

  1279. Trump

  1280. you're

  1281. a sinner

  1282. how can

  1283. that

  1284. you're

  1285. against

  1286. Trump

  1287. you're

  1288. in

  1289. favor

  1290. of

  1291. black

  1292. lives

  1293. matter

  1294. you're

  1295. against

  1296. black

  1297. lives

  1298. can

  1299. Jesus

  1300. lead

  1301. you

  1302. into

  1303. that

  1304. sin

  1305. because

  1306. you see

  1307. in our

  1308. mind

  1309. you have

  1310. to have

  1311. the

  1312. gospel

  1313. plus

  1314. this

  1315. and

  1316. Paul

  1317. says

  1318. certainly

  1319. not

  1320. verse

  1321. 18

  1322. and

  1323. here's

  1324. now

  1325. he's

  1326. really

  1327. going

  1328. to

  1329. the

  1330. law

  1331. if

  1332. I

  1333. rebuild

  1334. what

  1335. I

  1336. tore

  1337. down

  1338. I

  1339. prove

  1340. myself

  1341. to

  1342. be

  1343. a

  1344. transgressor

  1345. for

  1346. through

  1347. the

  1348. law

  1349. I

  1350. died

  1351. to

  1352. the

  1353. law

  1354. so

  1355. that

  1356. I

  1357. might

  1358. live

  1359. to

  1360. God

  1361. basically

  1362. what

  1363. he's

  1364. saying

  1365. is

  1366. listen

  1367. if

  1368. you

  1369. read

  1370. the

  1371. Old

  1372. Testament

  1373. he's

  1374. going

  1375. to

  1376. do

  1377. this

  1378. now

  1379. in

  1380. chapter

  1381. three

  1382. and

  1383. chapter

  1384. four

  1385. he's

  1386. going

  1387. to

  1388. give

  1389. about

  1390. four

  1391. or

  1392. five

  1393. different

  1394. examples

  1395. of

  1396. how

  1397. the

  1398. Old

  1399. Testament

  1400. points

  1401. to

  1402. the

  1403. fact

  1404. you

  1405. can't

  1406. keep

  1407. the

  1408. Old

  1409. Testament

  1410. the

  1411. entire

  1412. Old

  1413. Testament

  1414. is

  1415. pointing

  1416. to

  1417. the

  1418. fact

  1419. that

  1420. only

  1421. God

  1422. can

  1423. make

  1424. you

  1425. right

  1426. with

  1427. himself

  1428. and

  1429. only

  1430. God

  1431. can

  1432. act

  1433. to

  1434. make

  1435. you

  1436. right

  1437. with

  1438. himself

  1439. and

  1440. once

  1441. he's

  1442. done

  1443. it

  1444. that's

  1445. what

  1446. you

  1447. put

  1448. your

  1449. faith

  1450. and

  1451. trust

  1452. in

  1453. if

  1454. you

  1455. could

  1456. put

  1457. up

  1458. the

  1459. next

  1460. point

  1461. Andrew

  1462. the

  1463. gospel

  1464. plus

  1465. anything

  1466. means

  1467. you

  1468. don't

  1469. have

  1470. a

  1471. gospel

  1472. at

  1473. all

  1474. it's

  1475. the

  1476. gospel

  1477. plus

  1478. nothing

  1479. that's

  1480. the

  1481. gospel

  1482. just

  1483. you

  1484. know

  1485. in

  1486. terms

  1487. of

  1488. this

  1489. racism

  1490. thing

  1491. and

  1492. we're

  1493. going

  1494. to

  1495. move

  1496. on

  1497. to

  1498. some

  1499. other

  1500. really

  1501. important

  1502. points

  1503. here

  1504. you

  1505. know

  1506. one

  1507. of

  1508. the

  1509. things

  1510. about

  1511. this

  1512. letter

  1513. and

  1514. those

  1515. of

  1516. you

  1517. might

  1518. remember

  1519. depending

  1520. on

  1521. Jesus

  1522. either

  1523. died

  1524. and

  1525. rose

  1526. again

  1527. in

  1528. the

  1529. year

  1530. 30

  1531. or

  1532. the

  1533. year

  1534. 33

  1535. I

  1536. think

  1537. most

  1538. scholars

  1539. say

  1540. it

  1541. was

  1542. one

  1543. of

  1544. those

  1545. two

  1546. springs

  1547. of

  1548. 30

  1549. or

  1550. 33

  1551. and

  1552. this

  1553. letter

  1554. was

  1555. probably

  1556. written

  1557. in

  1558. the

  1559. year

  1560. 48

  1561. it

  1562. might

  1563. very

  1564. well

  1565. be

  1566. the

  1567. first

  1568. part

  1569. of

  1570. the

  1571. New

  1572. Testament

  1573. that

  1574. was

  1575. actually

  1576. written

  1577. and

  1578. if

  1579. he

  1580. died

  1581. in

  1582. 33

  1583. and

  1584. this

  1585. is

  1586. written

  1587. in

  1588. 48

  1589. then

  1590. 15

  1591. years

  1592. after

  1593. the

  1594. death

  1595. and

  1596. resurrection

  1597. of

  1598. Jesus

  1599. it's

  1600. very

  1601. very

  1602. interesting

  1603. that

  1604. all

  1605. the

  1606. way

  1607. through

  1608. the

  1609. letter

  1610. slavery

  1611. is

  1612. only

  1613. used

  1614. as

  1615. an

  1616. example

  1617. of

  1618. evil

  1619. slavery

  1620. is

  1621. only

  1622. used

  1623. as

  1624. an

  1625. example

  1626. of

  1627. evil

  1628. in

  1629. fact

  1630. one

  1631. of

  1632. the

  1633. famous

  1634. verses

  1635. in

  1636. Galatians

  1637. is

  1638. Galatians

    Galatians 5:1

  1639. 5

  1640. verse

  1641. 1

  1642. for

  1643. freedom

  1644. Christ

  1645. has set

  1646. us

  1647. free

  1648. stand

  1649. firm

  1650. therefore

  1651. and

  1652. do

  1653. not

  1654. submit

  1655. again

  1656. to

  1657. a

  1658. yoke

  1659. of

  1660. slavery

  1661. and

  1662. the

  1663. other

  1664. thing

  1665. is

  1666. that

  1667. this

  1668. text

  1669. Paul

  1670. doesn't

  1671. dress

  1672. racism

  1673. directly

  1674. but

  1675. he

  1676. in

  1677. fact

  1678. deals

  1679. with

  1680. racism

  1681. at

  1682. a

  1683. very

  1684. very

  1685. very

  1686. deep

  1687. level

  1688. because

  1689. the

  1690. gospel

  1691. when

  1692. we

  1693. understand

  1694. that

  1695. we

  1696. are

  1697. made

  1698. right

  1699. by

  1700. something

  1701. that

  1702. God

  1703. has

  1704. done

  1705. for

  1706. us

  1707. and

  1708. that

  1709. he

  1710. does

  1711. everything

  1712. to

  1713. make

  1714. us

  1715. right

  1716. with

  1717. himself

  1718. and

  1719. then

  1720. after

  1721. he's

  1722. done

  1723. everything

  1724. to

  1725. make

  1726. us

  1727. right

  1728. with

  1729. himself

  1730. and

  1731. we

  1732. put

  1733. our

  1734. faith

  1735. and

  1736. trust

  1737. in

  1738. him

  1739. and

  1740. he

  1741. declares

  1742. George

  1743. you

  1744. are

  1745. mine

  1746. you

  1747. are

  1748. mine

  1749. despite

  1750. the

  1751. fact

  1752. that

  1753. you

  1754. have

  1755. the

  1756. wrong

  1757. view

  1758. on

  1759. Trump

  1760. or

  1761. the

  1762. Andrew

  1763. as

  1764. the

  1765. gospel

  1766. comes

  1767. alive

  1768. to

  1769. me

  1770. and

  1771. I

  1772. write

  1773. this

  1774. down

  1775. because

  1776. if

  1777. you're

  1778. writing

  1779. this

  1780. down

  1781. then

  1782. you're

  1783. writing

  1784. this

  1785. to

  1786. me

  1787. as

  1788. the

  1789. gospel

  1790. comes

  1791. alive

  1792. to

  1793. me

  1794. racism

  1795. and

  1796. prejudice

  1797. should

  1798. die

  1799. in

  1800. me

  1801. like

  1802. while

  1803. on one

  1804. level

  1805. it

  1806. doesn't

  1807. look

  1808. like

  1809. he's

  1810. doing

  1811. what

  1812. Canadians

  1813. want

  1814. by

  1815. talking

  1816. about

  1817. the

  1818. gospel

  1819. in

  1820. fact

  1821. as

  1822. the

  1823. gospel

  1824. grips

  1825. us

  1826. in

  1827. that

  1828. the

  1829. hymn

  1830. that

  1831. Deborah

  1832. had

  1833. sing

  1834. hands

  1835. I

  1836. bring

  1837. I

  1838. have

  1839. a

  1840. master's

  1841. degree

  1842. I'm

  1843. a

  1844. Canadian

  1845. I've

  1846. been

  1847. married

  1848. a

  1849. long

  1850. time

  1851. nothing

  1852. in

  1853. my

  1854. hands

  1855. I

  1856. bring

  1857. simply

  1858. in

  1859. the

  1860. cross

  1861. I

  1862. cling

  1863. I

  1864. just

  1865. have

  1866. a

  1867. couple

  1868. of

  1869. minutes

  1870. I

  1871. have

  1872. to

  1873. wrap

  1874. this

  1875. up

  1876. there's

  1877. a

  1878. very

  1879. common

  1880. problem

  1881. that

  1882. Christians

  1883. have

  1884. if

  1885. you're

  1886. here

  1887. and

  1888. you're

  1889. not

  1890. a

  1891. Christian

  1892. you're

  1893. trying

  1894. to

  1895. figure

  1896. it

  1897. out

  1898. you

  1899. might

  1900. not

  1901. know

  1902. this

  1903. but

  1904. it's

  1905. a

  1906. been

  1907. a

  1908. profound

  1909. moral

  1910. failure

  1911. in

  1912. their

  1913. lives

  1914. or

  1915. financial

  1916. failure

  1917. or

  1918. relational

  1919. failure

  1920. and

  1921. they

  1922. no

  1923. longer

  1924. feel

  1925. that

  1926. they

  1927. are

  1928. almost

  1929. worthy

  1930. or

  1931. that

  1932. they

  1933. can

  1934. come

  1935. to

  1936. church

  1937. because

  1938. of

  1939. their

  1940. failure

  1941. you see

  1942. they

  1943. don't

  1944. really

  1945. believe

  1946. I

  1947. don't

  1948. really

  1949. believe

  1950. that

  1951. I

  1952. am

  1953. made

  1954. right

  1955. with

  1956. God

  1957. because

  1958. God

  1959. does

  1960. everything

  1961. to

  1962. make

  1963. me

  1964. right

  1965. with

  1966. him

  1967. I

  1968. actually

  1969. believe

  1970. it

  1971. is

  1972. connected

  1973. to

  1974. my

  1975. moral

  1976. excellence

  1977. my

  1978. relational

  1979. excellence

  1980. my

  1981. financial

  1982. excellence

  1983. my

  1984. spiritual

  1985. excellence

  1986. look at

  1987. what Paul

  1988. says

  1989. the Bible

  1990. says

  1991. in verse

  1992. 20

  1993. I

  1994. have

  1995. been

  1996. crucified

  1997. with

  1998. Christ

  1999. it

  2000. is

  2001. no

  2002. longer

  2003. I

  2004. who

  2005. live

  2006. but

  2007. Christ

  2008. who

  2009. lives

  2010. in

  2011. me

  2012. that

  2013. actually

  2014. could

  2015. you

  2016. put

  2017. this

  2018. up

  2019. we're

  2020. going

  2021. to

  2022. read

  2023. it

  2024. together

  2025. I

  2026. forgot

  2027. that

  2028. could

  2029. you

  2030. read

  2031. this

  2032. with

  2033. me

  2034. I

  2035. have

  2036. been

  2037. crucified

  2038. with

  2039. Christ

  2040. it

  2041. is

  2042. no

  2043. longer

  2044. I

  2045. who

  2046. live

  2047. but

  2048. Christ

  2049. who

  2050. lives

  2051. in

  2052. me

  2053. and

  2054. the

  2055. life

  2056. I

  2057. now

  2058. live

  2059. in

  2060. the

  2061. flesh

  2062. I

  2063. live

  2064. by

  2065. faith

  2066. in

  2067. the

  2068. Son

  2069. of

  2070. God

  2071. who

  2072. loved

  2073. me

  2074. and

  2075. gave

  2076. himself

  2077. for

  2078. me

  2079. this

  2080. is

  2081. a

  2082. very

  2083. very

  2084. very

  2085. wonderful

  2086. and

  2087. precious

  2088. text

  2089. text

  2090. text

  2091. you

  2092. see that

  2093. bottom

  2094. part

  2095. I

  2096. live

  2097. by

  2098. faith

  2099. in

  2100. the Son

  2101. of God

  2102. who

  2103. loved

  2104. me

  2105. and

  2106. gave

  2107. himself

  2108. for

  2109. me

  2110. that

  2111. summarizes

  2112. the

  2113. atonement

  2114. what

  2115. Jesus

  2116. has done

  2117. for me

  2118. and

  2119. for you

  2120. on the

  2121. cross

  2122. my

  2123. faith

  2124. is

  2125. in

  2126. him

  2127. he

  2128. loved

  2129. me

  2130. and

  2131. gave

  2132. himself

  2133. for

  2134. me

  2135. and

  2136. you

  2137. know

  2138. part

  2139. of

  2140. the

  2141. thing

  2142. about

  2143. becoming

  2144. a

  2145. Christian

  2146. is

  2147. we

  2148. say

  2149. you

  2150. need

  2151. to

  2152. invite

  2153. Jesus

  2154. to

  2155. come

  2156. into

  2157. your

  2158. life

  2159. and

  2160. the

  2161. Bible

  2162. also

  2163. talks

  2164. about

  2165. how

  2166. we

  2167. have

  2168. to

  2169. be

  2170. in

  2171. Christ

  2172. and

  2173. notice

  2174. how

  2175. this

  2176. verse

  2177. has

  2178. these

  2179. two

  2180. things

  2181. that

  2182. that's

  2183. how

  2184. we

  2185. become

  2186. a

  2187. Christian

  2188. either

  2189. through

  2190. a

  2191. very

  2192. conscious

  2193. decision

  2194. or

  2195. for

  2196. those

  2197. of

  2198. us

  2199. who

  2200. have

  2201. been

  2202. raised

  2203. in

  2204. Christian

  2205. homes

  2206. or

  2207. it's

  2208. a

  2209. slower

  2210. conversion

  2211. process

  2212. where

  2213. at

  2214. some

  2215. point

  2216. in

  2217. time

  2218. we've

  2219. crossed

  2220. a

  2221. divide

  2222. and

  2223. we

  2224. realize

  2225. that

  2226. Christ

  2227. has

  2228. come

  2229. into

  2230. our

  2231. lives

  2232. look

  2233. how

  2234. it

  2235. says

  2236. it

  2237. I

  2238. have

  2239. been

  2240. crucified

  2241. with

  2242. Christ

  2243. that

  2244. somehow

  2245. what

  2246. that's

  2247. describing

  2248. is

  2249. that

  2250. somehow

  2251. I'm

  2252. in

  2253. Christ

  2254. it

  2255. is

  2256. no

  2257. longer

  2258. I

  2259. who

  2260. live

  2261. because

  2262. somehow

  2263. I'm

  2264. in

  2265. Christ

  2266. but

  2267. Christ

  2268. who

  2269. lives

  2270. in

  2271. me

  2272. you

  2273. know

  2274. this

  2275. is

  2276. the

  2277. wonderful

  2278. text

  2279. that

  2280. it's

  2281. not

  2282. that

  2283. my

  2284. arm

  2285. is

  2286. long

  2287. enough

  2288. to

  2289. reach

  2290. Jesus

  2291. but

  2292. that

  2293. his

  2294. arm

  2295. is

  2296. long

  2297. enough

  2298. to

  2299. reach

  2300. mine

  2301. and

  2302. it's

  2303. not

  2304. that

  2305. my

  2306. grip

  2307. is

  2308. strong

  2309. enough

  2310. to

  2311. hold

  2312. on

  2313. to

  2314. Jesus

  2315. hand

  2316. because

  2317. my

  2318. hand

  2319. sometimes

  2320. it's

  2321. strong

  2322. sometimes

  2323. it's

  2324. weak

  2325. sometimes

  2326. it wants

  2327. to do

  2328. something

  2329. completely

  2330. different

  2331. but

  2332. when

  2333. Jesus

  2334. puts

  2335. his

  2336. hand

  2337. in

  2338. my

  2339. exchange

  2340. he

  2341. never

  2342. lets

  2343. me

  2344. go

  2345. he

  2346. never

  2347. lets

  2348. me

  2349. go

  2350. he

  2351. never

  2352. lets

  2353. me

  2354. go

  2355. and

  2356. you

  2357. see

  2358. this

  2359. other

  2360. thing

  2361. which

  2362. is

  2363. so

  2364. wonderful

  2365. about

  2366. this

  2367. text

  2368. so

  2369. here's

  2370. the

  2371. thing

  2372. the

  2373. average

  2374. Canadian

  2375. the

  2376. average

  2377. Canadian

  2378. basically

  2379. what

  2380. they'll

  2381. say

  2382. is

  2383. I

  2384. try

  2385. to

  2386. live

  2387. a

  2388. good

  2389. life

  2390. and

  2391. when

  2392. I

  2393. die

  2394. I'm

  2395. going

  2396. to

  2397. go

  2398. to

  2399. a

  2400. better

  2401. place

  2402. and

  2403. sort

  2404. of

  2405. the

  2406. idea

  2407. is

  2408. at

  2409. the

  2410. end

  2411. of

  2412. you

  2413. got

  2414. a

  2415. D

  2416. life

  2417. you

  2418. know

  2419. D

  2420. is

  2421. better

  2422. than

  2423. an

  2424. F

  2425. into

  2426. a

  2427. better

  2428. place

  2429. you

  2430. know

  2431. and

  2432. some

  2433. people

  2434. live

  2435. a

  2436. B

  2437. plus

  2438. life

  2439. some

  2440. people

  2441. live

  2442. an

  2443. A

  2444. life

  2445. or

  2446. an

  2447. A

  2448. plus

  2449. life

  2450. some

  2451. people

  2452. live

  2453. a

  2454. D

  2455. life

  2456. there's

  2457. only

  2458. a

  2459. few

  2460. people

  2461. and

  2462. we

  2463. all

  2464. know

  2465. who

  2466. they

  2467. are

  2468. they

  2469. either

  2470. vote

  2471. for

  2472. Trump

  2473. or

  2474. didn't

  2475. vote

  2476. for

  2477. Trump

  2478. or

  2479. something

  2480. like

  2481. that

  2482. but

  2483. depending

  2484. on

  2485. your

  2486. politics

  2487. but

  2488. you

  2489. know

  2490. they

  2491. get

  2492. the

  2493. F's

  2494. they

  2495. go

  2496. to

  2497. the

  2498. bad

  2499. place

  2500. but

  2501. you

  2502. know

  2503. and

  2504. so

  2505. in

  2506. a

  2507. sense

  2508. my

  2509. justification

  2510. is

  2511. in

  2512. the

  2513. future

  2514. the

  2515. story

  2516. that

  2517. I

  2518. was

  2519. sharing

  2520. when

  2521. I've

  2522. had

  2523. many

  2524. conversations

  2525. with

  2526. people

  2527. and

  2528. it's

  2529. not

  2530. just

  2531. something

  2532. you

  2533. know

  2534. there's

  2535. been

  2536. many

  2537. times

  2538. in

  2539. my

  2540. life

  2541. that

  2542. if

  2543. I

  2544. wasn't

  2545. the

  2546. pastor

  2547. I

  2548. would

  2549. feel

  2550. too

  2551. guilty

  2552. to

  2553. come

  2554. to

  2555. church

  2556. I'm

  2557. justification

  2558. is

  2559. in

  2560. our

  2561. current

  2562. moral

  2563. or

  2564. spiritual

  2565. or

  2566. emotional

  2567. or

  2568. relational

  2569. or

  2570. financial

  2571. excellence

  2572. but

  2573. if

  2574. you

  2575. look

  2576. at

  2577. this

  2578. text

  2579. my

  2580. justification

  2581. is

  2582. in

  2583. the

  2584. past

  2585. because

  2586. Jesus

  2587. died

  2588. in

  2589. the

  2590. past

  2591. that

  2592. when

  2593. he

  2594. died

  2595. for

  2596. me

  2597. in

  2598. the

  2599. past

  2600. in

  2601. the

  2602. past

  2603. not

  2604. how

  2605. good

  2606. my

  2607. sermon

  2608. is

  2609. today

  2610. not

  2611. how

  2612. good

  2613. I

  2614. will

  2615. be

  2616. as

  2617. a

  2618. pastor

  2619. in

  2620. three

  2621. weeks

  2622. not

  2623. how

  2624. good

  2625. as

  2626. a

  2627. husband

  2628. I'm

  2629. going

  2630. to

  2631. be

  2632. in

  2633. five

  2634. he

  2635. knew

  2636. all

  2637. of

  2638. that

  2639. that

  2640. my

  2641. justification

  2642. all

  2643. of

  2644. my

  2645. life

  2646. is

  2647. justified

  2648. by

  2649. something

  2650. that

  2651. God

  2652. did

  2653. in

  2654. the

  2655. past

  2656. it

  2657. makes

  2658. it

  2659. more

  2660. certain

  2661. that

  2662. as

  2663. it

  2664. says

  2665. in

  2666. the

  2667. book

  2668. of

  2669. Romans

  2670. nothing

  2671. can

  2672. separate

  2673. me

  2674. from

  2675. the

  2676. love

  2677. of

  2678. God

  2679. not

  2680. because

  2681. I'm

  2682. proud

  2683. not

  2684. because

  2685. I'm

  2686. in

  2687. or

  2688. anything

  2689. like

  2690. that

  2691. but

  2692. because

  2693. Jesus

  2694. did

  2695. it

  2696. all

  2697. my

  2698. justification

  2699. the

  2700. thing

  2701. that

  2702. made

  2703. me

  2704. right

  2705. with

  2706. God

  2707. is

  2708. in

  2709. the

  2710. past

  2711. not

  2712. the

  2713. future

  2714. not

  2715. the

  2716. present

  2717. in

  2718. the

  2719. past

  2720. and

  2721. I

  2722. experience

  2723. the

  2724. benefits

  2725. of

  2726. it

  2727. in

  2728. the

  2729. present

  2730. how

  2731. important

  2732. is

  2733. this

  2734. Paul

  2735. brings

  2736. it

  2737. home

  2738. in

  2739. a

  2740. very

  2741. powerful

  2742. way

  2743. my

  2744. final

  2745. time

  2746. of

  2747. using

  2748. Ken

  2749. as

  2750. Peter

  2751. and

  2752. you're

  2753. listening

  2754. in

  2755. and

  2756. what

  2757. do

  2758. we

  2759. all

  2760. know

  2761. about

  2762. Peter

  2763. we

  2764. would

  2765. all

  2766. know

  2767. about

  2768. Peter

  2769. that

  2770. Peter

  2771. said

  2772. to

  2773. Jesus

  2774. when

  2775. Jesus

  2776. said

  2777. I've

  2778. come

  2779. to

  2780. die

  2781. on

  2782. the

  2783. cross

  2784. Peter

  2785. says

  2786. no

  2787. way

  2788. Jose

  2789. not

  2790. for

  2791. you

  2792. and

  2793. that

  2794. when

  2795. it

  2796. came

  2797. time

  2798. that

  2799. in

  2800. the

  2801. last

  2802. supper

  2803. Jesus

  2804. says

  2805. I'm

  2806. going

  2807. to

  2808. be

  2809. betrayed

  2810. I'm

  2811. going

  2812. to

  2813. die

  2814. on

  2815. the

  2816. cross

  2817. tomorrow

  2818. Peter

  2819. says

  2820. we're

  2821. all

  2822. going

  2823. to

  2824. die

  2825. with

  2826. you

  2827. and

  2828. Peter

  2829. says

  2830. and

  2831. Peter

  2832. and

  2833. Peter

  2834. follows

  2835. along

  2836. and

  2837. Peter

  2838. denies

  2839. and

  2840. Peter

  2841. goes

  2842. off

  2843. crying

  2844. into

  2845. the

  2846. night

  2847. and

  2848. now

  2849. Paul

  2850. stands

  2851. in

  2852. front

  2853. of

  2854. Peter

  2855. and

  2856. he

  2857. says

  2858. verse

  2859. 21

  2860. we'll

  2861. start

  2862. just a

  2863. little

  2864. bit

  2865. before

  2866. that

  2867. you

  2868. know

  2869. and

  2870. the

  2871. life

  2872. I

  2873. now

  2874. live

  2875. in

  2876. the

  2877. flesh

  2878. I

  2879. live

  2880. by

  2881. faith

  2882. in

  2883. the

  2884. son

  2885. of

  2886. God

  2887. who

  2888. loved

  2889. me

  2890. and

  2891. gave

  2892. himself

  2893. for

  2894. me

  2895. and

  2896. he

  2897. says

  2898. to

  2899. Peter

  2900. I

  2901. do

  2902. not

  2903. nullify

  2904. the

  2905. grace

  2906. of

  2907. God

  2908. now

  2909. he

  2910. says

  2911. to

  2912. Peter

  2913. for

  2914. if

  2915. the

  2916. righteousness

  2917. that

  2918. is

  2919. being

  2920. able

  2921. to

  2922. be

  2923. made

  2924. right

  2925. with

  2926. God

  2927. if

  2928. that

  2929. were

  2930. through

  2931. the

  2932. law

  2933. Peter

  2934. then

  2935. Christ

  2936. died

  2937. for

  2938. no

  2939. purpose

  2940. Christ's

  2941. death

  2942. was

  2943. only

  2944. a

  2945. tragic

  2946. vain

  2947. waste

  2948. please

  2949. stand

  2950. just

  2951. if

  2952. there's

  2953. you

  2954. know

  2955. this

  2956. is

  2957. a

  2958. very

  2959. good

  2960. time

  2961. there's

  2962. no

  2963. time

  2964. better

  2965. than

  2966. right

  2967. now

  2968. maybe

  2969. the

  2970. Lord

  2971. has

  2972. touched

  2973. your

  2974. heart

  2975. in

  2976. different

  2977. ways

  2978. just

  2979. for

  2980. those

  2981. of

  2982. you

  2983. who

  2984. just

  2985. you

  2986. know

  2987. one

  2988. of

  2989. the

  2990. reasons

  2991. the

  2992. mission

  2993. statement

  2994. of

  2995. this

  2996. church

  2997. is

  2998. making

  2999. disciples

  3000. of

  3001. Jesus

  3002. gripped

  3003. by

  3004. the

  3005. gospel

  3006. learning

  3007. to

  3008. live

  3009. for

  3010. God's

  3011. glory

  3012. is

  3013. precisely

  3014. because

  3015. we need

  3016. to be

  3017. gripped

  3018. by

  3019. the

  3020. gospel

  3021. so

  3022. we need

  3023. to know

  3024. who

  3025. Jesus

  3026. is

  3027. and what

  3028. he did

  3029. for us

  3030. on the

  3031. cross

  3032. and if

  3033. you've

  3034. never

  3035. given

  3036. your

  3037. life

  3038. to

  3039. Jesus

  3040. there is

  3041. no

  3042. better

  3043. time

  3044. than

  3045. right

  3046. now

  3047. just

  3048. in

  3049. your

  3050. own

  3051. words

  3052. to

  3053. say

  3054. Jesus

  3055. could

  3056. you

  3057. please

  3058. come

  3059. into

  3060. my

  3061. life

  3062. and

  3063. be

  3064. my

  3065. savior

  3066. and

  3067. my

  3068. lord

  3069. I

  3070. forsake

  3071. all

  3072. others

  3073. may

  3074. you

  3075. come

  3076. into

  3077. my

  3078. life

  3079. and

  3080. be

  3081. my

  3082. savior

  3083. and

  3084. my

  3085. lord

  3086. you

  3087. don't

  3088. need

  3089. any

  3090. fancier

  3091. language

  3092. than

  3093. that

  3094. you

  3095. don't

  3096. have

  3097. to

  3098. try

  3099. to

  3100. remember

  3101. a

  3102. sinner's

  3103. prayer

  3104. that

  3105. you

  3106. heard

  3107. on

  3108. TV

  3109. five

  3110. years

  3111. ago

  3112. there's

  3113. no

  3114. magic

  3115. formula

  3116. there's

  3117. just

  3118. you

  3119. calling

  3120. out

  3121. to

  3122. God

  3123. and

  3124. there's

  3125. no

  3126. better

  3127. time

  3128. than

  3129. to

  3130. do

  3131. that

  3132. right

  3133. now

  3134. and

  3135. for

  3136. all

  3137. of us

  3138. let's

  3139. just

  3140. bow

  3141. our heads

  3142. in

  3143. prayer

  3144. Father

  3145. thank

  3146. you

  3147. for

  3148. Jesus

  3149. thank

  3150. you

  3151. for

  3152. who

  3153. he

  3154. is

  3155. God

  3156. he's

  3157. your

  3158. son

  3159. thank

  3160. you

  3161. that

  3162. he

  3163. was

  3164. born

  3165. of

  3166. Mary

  3167. without

  3168. stopping

  3169. being

  3170. your

  3171. son

  3172. but

  3173. he

  3174. became

  3175. fully

  3176. human

  3177. thank

  3178. you

  3179. for

  3180. his

  3181. perfect

  3182. life

  3183. thank

  3184. you

  3185. for

  3186. his

  3187. death

  3188. upon

  3189. the

  3190. cross

  3191. thank

  3192. you

  3193. father

  3194. that

  3195. he

  3196. did

  3197. all

  3198. of

  3199. these

  3200. things

  3201. because

  3202. he

  3203. loved

  3204. me

  3205. he

  3206. loved

  3207. all

  3208. of

  3209. the

  3210. people

  3211. who

  3212. are

  3213. here

  3214. he

  3215. loves

  3216. the

  3217. city

  3218. of

  3219. Ottawa

  3220. he

  3221. loves

  3222. the

  3223. North

  3224. Koreans

  3225. he

  3226. loves

  3227. those

  3228. in

  3229. Saudi

  3230. Arabia

  3231. he

  3232. loves

  3233. those

  3234. in

  3235. Singapore

  3236. he

  3237. loves

  3238. those

  3239. in

  3240. Nigeria

  3241. that

  3242. he

  3243. died

  3244. for

  3245. people

  3246. irrespective

  3247. of

  3248. their

  3249. race

  3250. or

  3251. their

  3252. religion

  3253. father

  3254. we

  3255. thank

  3256. you

  3257. for

  3258. Jesus

  3259. that

  3260. he

  3261. died

  3262. on

  3263. the

  3264. cross

  3265. and

  3266. we

  3267. thank

  3268. you

  3269. that

  3270. by

  3271. his

  3272. death

  3273. on

  3274. the

  3275. cross

  3276. you

  3277. have

  3278. done

  3279. everything

  3280. that

  3281. needs

  3282. to

  3283. do

  3284. to

  3285. put

  3286. people

  3287. right

  3288. with

  3289. you

  3290. and

  3291. that

  3292. we

  3293. are

  3294. purely

  3295. and

  3296. utterly

  3297. only

  3298. to

  3299. receive

  3300. it

  3301. by

  3302. faith

  3303. father

  3304. thank

  3305. you

  3306. for

  3307. the

  3308. gift

  3309. of

  3310. faith

  3311. for

  3312. putting

  3313. our

  3314. faith

  3315. and

  3316. trust

  3317. in

  3318. Jesus

  3319. father

  3320. pour

  3321. out

  3322. your

  3323. holy

  3324. spirit

  3325. upon

  3326. us

  3327. make

  3328. us

  3329. disciples

  3330. of

  3331. Jesus

  3332. who

  3333. are

  3334. gripped

  3335. by

  3336. the

  3337. gospel

  3338. learning

  3339. to

  3340. live

  3341. for

  3342. your

  3343. glory

  3344. and

  3345. we

  3346. ask

  3347. this

  3348. in

  3349. the

  3350. name

  3351. of

  3352. Jesus

  3353. Amen
