  1. Okay, good morning. It's good to see you. I trust you've had a good week and it's wonderful to look at God's Word again together.

  2. If you don't know me, my name is Kevin and I'm one of the leaders here, I guess.

  3. Now, over the last four weeks, we've been journeying through the Gospels and we've been looking at this person, the Lord Jesus Christ.

  4. And we've been asking the question, who is this man?

  5. Who is this man that turned the world upside down?

  6. This man that turned people's lives upside down?

  7. Who is this man that even still today, thousands of years later, has turned billions of people's worlds upside down?

  8. And so we've been going through the Gospels and looking at how Jesus across the centuries, in every culture, every corner of the world, Jesus has had this remarkable impact.

  9. Who is this man?

  10. Now, when you read the Gospels, especially Mark's Gospel and John's Gospel, about halfway through, the narrative takes a sharp turn.

  11. And what happens is that in the first half of these Gospels, the Gospel writers are answering the question, who is this man?

  12. But then it changes about halfway and they start to ask the question, who is this king?

  13. And we see this in John chapter 11 and Mark chapter 8, as the narrative starts to change and it focuses on the cross.

John 11 chapter mention Mark 8 chapter mention

  14. And so we as a church are on this eight-week journey, going through the Gospels, making our way towards Easter.

  15. And we're going to follow the journey of the Gospels.

  16. And so today we're asking the question, not so much who was this man, but who is this king?

  17. Who is King Jesus?

  18. And so today we start off in John chapter 12, and we're going to look at Jesus' strange glory.

    John 12 chapter mention

  19. Jesus' unusual glory.

  20. Now, the passage of Scripture that we read is a difficult passage.

  21. And I want to ask you to really gauge and think about it.

  22. It's a passage that in some ways requires some maturity to think about.

  23. It's not an easy passage.

  24. I'm going to try my best to not make it too complicated.

  25. And I'm going to try and keep it simple.

  26. But it's a passage that requires us to really think about it.

  27. Okay?

  28. So are you ready for that?

  29. Okay.

  30. Great.

  31. Just the three of us.

  32. But okay.

  33. Well, I'm going to pray for us.

  34. I'm going to ask God to speak to us from His Word, and then let's dive in.

  35. So won't you join me in prayer?

  36. Father God, there's no one like you.

  37. You're real, and you're live, and you're living.

  38. And you speak to us from your Word.

  39. And God, today as we look at this difficult passage, won't you be here in power?

  40. Won't you be here by your presence?

  41. Won't you open up your Word to us and open up our hearts to see you?

  42. God, today at the end of this sermon, we don't just want more information about you.

  43. We want to have met you and encountered you.

  44. God, whether in a complex way and a simple way, won't you help us to meet you in your Word this morning?

  45. So Holy Spirit, I ask you to be here.

  46. Take the words of these pages and apply them to our hearts.

  47. Help us to see you in reality.

  48. Won't you bless the preaching of your Word, we pray.

  49. In your name, amen.

  50. Amen.

  51. Okay.

  52. So we read John chapter 12.

    John 12 chapter mention

  53. Now, just before the context, John chapter 11 actually starts off with this.

    John 11 chapter mention

  54. Right at the end, it says this.

  55. Now, the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover.

  56. So remember, the Passover is the feast that is celebrated as the Jewish men and women remembered God's amazing grace to them in the nation of Egypt.

  57. God delivered His people, saved His people by the blood of the Lamb.

  58. The fact that innocent lambs died in their place, that they could be set free from Egypt and from slavery and become free men and women.

  59. By the blood of the Lamb, these men and women were set free, and so every year they celebrate Passover as a remembrance, as a reminder of their liberation at the expense of somebody else.

  60. And John is getting our attention here.

  61. He's saying Jesus is about to go to the cross, but note the fact that the cross is like the ultimate Passover.

  62. Jesus dies in the place so that we can be free.

  63. And then go to verse 20, and it says this.

  64. Now, among those who went up to worship at the Passover feast were some Greeks.

  65. Okay, so these are Gentiles.

  66. They're not Jewish men and women.

  67. They are possibly some converts that have become converted to Judaism.

  68. And it says, these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and they asked him, saying, Sir, we want to see Jesus.

  69. Now, it's well known that at the time of this, there were a bunch of Gentiles, non-Jewish men and women,

  70. Greek-speaking Gentiles, that had become disillusioned with the Greek gods.

  71. They had become disillusioned with the fact that the Greek deities, there were so many of them.

  72. There was a god of agriculture, a god of money, a god of the family, a god of fertility.

  73. And they kind of thought, there are all these gods, but who's the one supreme god?

  74. Surely there must be one god that is god of all these gods.

  75. And so something of Judaism attracted them.

  76. The fact that Judaism is monotheistic.

  77. There's one true god, says Deuteronomy chapter 6.

    Deuteronomy 6 chapter mention

  78. And so a bunch of them are attracted to Judaism.

  79. But secondly, they disillusioned because the Greek gods, it was religion, but it had no bearing on their everyday life.

  80. Yeah, they went to the temple, and they worshipped, and they sacrificed, and they brought their money.

  81. But actually, it didn't tell you how to live.

  82. It had no bearing on morality, or ethics, or it didn't instruct you on your everyday life.

  83. But Judaism, actually, the nature of who God is, had a huge impact on how you live your life from day to day.

  84. And so a bunch of these spiritual seekers convert to Judaism in search of the one true God,

  85. and the God that's actually going to speak into their everyday life.

  86. And now they encounter Jesus.

  87. They've heard about this man called Jesus.

  88. And they're wondering, is this the Messiah?

  89. Is this the king that the prophets have been speaking about for hundreds of years?

  90. Is this the one that we've been waiting for?

  91. And so they come to Philip, who was from a Greek-speaking area, and they say to him,

  92. We want to have a meeting with Jesus.

  93. Can you help us meet Jesus?

  94. Now, what are they really saying here?

  95. They're saying, Jesus, we've heard about you.

  96. We've heard about the good things that you've done.

  97. Some people say you're a good moral teacher.

  98. Some people say you're an excellent man.

  99. Some people say maybe you're even divine.

  100. Maybe you're the Son of God.

  101. We want to know who you really are.

  102. Jesus, if you're the king that for centuries we've been waiting for, show us your glory.

  103. Show us your glory.

  104. And friends, if you're wondering about that question, Jesus, who are you?

  105. You're in a great place.

  106. It's a question every one of us need to ask.

  107. Every human being needs to ask this question.

  108. Who is Jesus of Nazareth?

  109. And is he really who he said he is?

  110. You're in the right place to ask that.

  111. And Jesus is going to answer their question, but he's going to do it in the most unusual way.

  112. The way that nobody expected him to.

  113. Now, before we get there, think about this.

  114. They've heard that Jesus is possibly a king.

  115. He's maybe the Messiah we've been waiting for.

  116. Now, every king, every queen, every monarch knows that part of being royal is the display of your glory.

  117. You've got to somehow let people know that you're a king.

  118. What's the point in being a king if nobody knows you're a king?

  119. Even the most benevolent kings, even the most humble monarchs use their position and their power to serve their people.

  120. That's part of what it means to be a king.

  121. You have position.

  122. You have power.

  123. You have glory.

  124. That's what comes with the job.

  125. That's what it means to be a king.

  126. And so this is what the nation of Israel are waiting for.

  127. The anticipation of the Messiah is boiling.

  128. Israel's redeeming king is coming to rescue them from the oppression of the Romans.

  129. Someone who would overthrow their enemies and restore Israel to their former glory.

  130. All of Israel, those that were Jewish by race and those that have converted to Judaism, are waiting for the coming king.

  131. He is going to rescue and restore Israel and restore it to its former glory.

  132. And you know what?

  133. In our hearts, we all long for a king like that.

  134. In our hearts, every one of us long for a king that will set us free.

  135. Long for a king that will make our lives more comfortable.

  136. Long for a king that will deliver us and make our lives more convenient.

  137. A king that will set us free.

  138. And so here come these spiritual seekers.

  139. They want to find out if Jesus really is the king.

  140. And so what does Jesus say?

  141. He says, verse 23 I think it is.

  142. He says,

  143. The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.

  144. Here it is after all the waiting.

  145. All the anticipation.

  146. All the wondering.

  147. All the scrutinizing.

  148. After three years of Jesus going around saying,

  149. Repent for the kingdom of God is near.

  150. Finally Jesus says,

  151. Now is the time.

  152. It's here.

  153. The time has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.

  154. To reveal His glory.

  155. And the disciples must have been thinking,

  156. It's about time.

  157. Finally, we left our family business.

  158. We left the tax office.

  159. When other disciples abandoned Jesus and left Him,

  160. we stuck with Him through thick and thin.

  161. In the good times, in the difficult times,

  162. we believed in Jesus.

  163. Now is the time.

  164. Jesus is going to finally let everyone know He's the king.

  165. It's payday.

  166. Right?

  167. We've sacrificed lots for Jesus.

  168. Now it's payday.

  169. We're going to finally be proved we were right to believe in Jesus.

  170. Jesus says,

  171. It's here.

  172. Now has the time come for the Son of Man to be glorified.

  173. Glorified.

  174. But then Jesus says the most anticlimactic,

  175. the most disappointing things,

  176. I think, in the entire gospel.

  177. He says,

  178. Now is the time for the Son of Man to be glorified.

  179. And then what does He say?

  180. Unless a grain of wheat falls to the earth and dies,

  181. it remains alone.

  182. But if it dies,

  183. it bears much fruit.

  184. Verse 27.

  185. Now my soul is troubled.

  186. And what shall I say?

  187. Father, save me from this hour?

  188. No.

  189. For this very purpose,

  190. I have come to this hour.

  191. Father, glorify Your name.

  192. Friends,

  193. one of the strangest things about this king,

  194. about King Jesus,

  195. is that Jesus is unequivocal about the fact

  196. that His moment of glory,

  197. the high point of His life,

  198. the moment, in fact,

  199. His whole life was moving towards

  200. is actually in one and the same time

  201. His moment of greatest shame.

  202. It's His moment of death.

  203. It's the moment He was hung on the cross

  204. as a criminal and crucified

  205. and left there to die.

  206. J.C. Ryle says it like this.

  207. The Lord Jesus Christ would have us know

  208. that He came not to wear a crown,

  209. but to bear a cross.

  210. He came not to live a life of honor,

  211. ease and magnificence,

  212. but to die a shameful and a dishonored death.

  213. And the kingdom He set up

  214. was to begin not with a coronation,

  215. but with a crucifixion.

  216. The glory of His kingdom

  217. was to rise not from victories with the sword,

  218. not accumulated treasures of gold and silver,

  219. but from the death of its king.

  220. This morning, I want to give us,

  221. there's lots of reasons

  222. why the cross is Christ's moment of glory.

  223. I want to give us just three,

  224. actually four reasons

  225. why the cross is Christ's moment of glory.

  226. Okay?

  227. Why this fateful Friday afternoon,

  228. the day of Christ's excruciating death,

  229. the day when the whole world turned dark,

  230. the day when the world seemed to be rocked

  231. to its very core,

  232. was actually at one and the same time

  233. the most tragic day in the history of the world,

  234. but also the most glorious.

  235. Okay?

  236. A couple of reasons.

  237. First thing is this.

  238. The cross of Christ gloriously reveals

  239. the perfect nature and the character of God.

  240. Okay?

  241. It reveals who God really is.

  242. Remember a few weeks ago,

  243. we looked at Psalm 115 and says this.

  244. It starts off saying,

  245. not to us, O God,

  246. not to us,

  247. but to your name give the glory.

  248. Do you remember that?

  249. Okay?

  250. And we asked the question,

  251. what is the glory of God?

  252. And what does it mean that God glorifies His name?

  253. And the answer we came up with is,

  254. the glory of God is the totality

  255. of all of God's divine attributes.

  256. So God's holiness and His justice,

  257. His mercy and His grace,

  258. His sovereignty and His patience,

  259. all of God's attributes together

  260. is like a gigantic multifaceted diamond,

  261. and every one of His characteristics

  262. is like a facet of this diamond

  263. that reveals who He is.

  264. Okay?

  265. And then we said that to glorify God

  266. is to reveal or to remove the cover

  267. that shrouds His glory.

  268. It's like putting the multifaceted nature

  269. and the character of God on display,

  270. making it visible for people to see.

  271. Okay?

  272. That's what it means to glorify God.

  273. So for instance,

  274. you glorify God when,

  275. because of the gospel

  276. and what God's done in your heart,

  277. you forgive somebody that's really hurt you,

  278. someone's really wronged you,

  279. and you forgive them.

  280. Why?

  281. Because in a way you're making visible,

  282. you're revealing,

  283. displaying the infinite,

  284. forgiveness of God,

  285. that because of what Christ has done

  286. for you on the cross,

  287. you can forgive those around you.

  288. Or another example,

  289. you forgive God,

  290. you glorify God

  291. when you run a marathon,

  292. right,

  293. to borrow from my friend,

  294. in such a way

  295. that it says to those around you,

  296. Christ is more precious to me

  297. than the gold or the silver

  298. that I might win.

  299. When you run in such a way

  300. that says whether I do well

  301. or I do badly,

  302. Christ is precious in my life.

  303. That glorifies God.

  304. You're making visible

  305. the infinite,

  306. perfect nature

  307. and the character of God.

  308. Does that make sense?

  309. You tracking?

  310. Sort of?

  311. Okay, great.

  312. Now,

  313. Jesus says this,

  314. the hour has come

  315. for the Son of Man

  316. to be glorified.

  317. Now is the hour coming

  318. for you to really see me

  319. for who I am.

  320. Now is coming

  321. my glory,

  322. my perfect nature

  323. and character

  324. that has been hidden

  325. throughout the ages.

  326. Now you're going to see me

  327. for who I really am.

  328. Friends,

  329. how is Christ's excruciating

  330. death on the cross,

  331. how does that reveal

  332. who Christ is?

  333. Well,

  334. think about this.

  335. It reveals that Jesus

  336. is sovereign

  337. over everything

  338. in the world.

  339. Christ is supremely sovereign.

  340. Think about how

  341. for hundreds of years

  342. God has been speaking

  343. through his prophets

  344. and he's been saying

  345. to them,

  346. the hour is coming

  347. when I will send

  348. my deliverer,

  349. I will send my rescuer,

  350. he will save his people,

  351. he will save them

  352. from their enemies

  353. out there

  354. but as we heard

  355. last week

  356. also from the enemies

  357. inside,

  358. God had been speaking

  359. and saying

  360. I will send my rescuer

  361. to save my people

  362. and 700 years earlier

  363. God sent a specific prophet

  364. called Isaiah

  365. and God had promised

  366. that this deliverer

  367. would come

  368. not as a king

  369. who destroys his enemies

  370. but as a suffering servant.

  371. God promised

  372. I will send my Messiah,

  373. my deliverer,

  374. he will be familiar

  375. with pain and suffering.

  376. He will be despised

  377. and rejected.

  378. He will be one

  379. that men and women

  380. scoff at

  381. and ridicule.

  382. In fact,

  383. my deliverer will come

  384. and he will be pierced

  385. for the transgressions

  386. of his people.

  387. And then Isaiah said

  388. he will stand trial

  389. but during his trial

  390. he will remain silent.

  391. He won't argue

  392. with the unfair judgment

  393. that's brought upon him.

  394. And John tells us

  395. that Isaiah said

  396. these things

  397. because he saw

  398. the glory of God,

  399. he saw who God was.

  400. You see friends,

  401. Jesus Christ didn't die

  402. because Pontius Pilate

  403. had career ambitions,

  404. he didn't want to get

  405. on the wrong side

  406. of the Romans

  407. and so he thought

  408. I better please the Romans.

  409. No, of course it happened,

  410. that's not why Jesus died.

  411. Jesus didn't die

  412. because Judas Iscariot

  413. betrayed him

  414. for 30 pieces of silver.

  415. Jesus Christ didn't die

  416. because the Jews

  417. were jealous of him

  418. and handed him over

  419. to Pontius Pilate.

  420. All those things happened

  421. but those were simply

  422. tools in the hands

  423. of a sovereign God.

  424. the God who had chosen

  425. before the creation

  426. of the world

  427. that his son would die

  428. on the cross

  429. to save his people.

  430. Jesus said this

  431. in John chapter 10.

    John 10 chapter mention

  432. He said,

  433. I am the good shepherd.

  434. I lay down my life

  435. for my sheep.

  436. No one takes my life

  437. from me.

  438. I lay it down

  439. of my own accord.

  440. I have authority

  441. to lay it down

  442. and I have authority

  443. to take it up again.

  444. Friends,

  445. the cross of Christ

  446. reveals to us

  447. that Jesus Christ

  448. is sovereign

  449. over everything

  450. even over wickedness

  451. and great evil.

  452. Think about how

  453. the cross reveals to us

  454. the holiness of God,

  455. the justice of God.

  456. Look at verse 27

  457. with me.

  458. Jesus says this.

  459. He says,

  460. Now my soul

  461. is troubled.

  462. Why was Jesus

  463. so troubled?

  464. Why was Jesus

  465. so agitated

  466. before the cross?

  467. Is it because

  468. he's seen

  469. what the Romans

  470. do to people

  471. when they crucify them

  472. and he can't bear

  473. to face the pain?

  474. He thinks,

  475. That's going to be

  476. so painful

  477. I can't bear it.

  478. Is that why

  479. Jesus is agitated?

  480. No, of course not.

  481. If that's the reason,

  482. then many martyrs

  483. face their death

  484. better than Jesus.

  485. Friends,

  486. the reason why

  487. Jesus' soul

  488. is so troubled

  489. is because

  490. not merely

  491. the excruciating pain

  492. he's about to face,

  493. but because

  494. the full

  495. and the final

  496. judgment of God,

  497. the wrath of God

  498. is for all the world.

  499. the final wrath

  500. of God

  501. at the sins

  502. of those

  503. that would believe

  504. in him

  505. is about to be

  506. put on his shoulders,

  507. is about to be

  508. poured into the depths

  509. of his soul.

  510. In a sense,

  511. Christ is about

  512. to drink

  513. the very worst

  514. of hell itself.

  515. And the reason

  516. why Jesus would do this

  517. is because

  518. this is the only way

  519. that a perfectly

  520. holy

  521. and righteous

  522. God

  523. could welcome

  524. unholy

  525. and unrighteous

  526. people like me

  527. and like you

  528. into his family.

  529. Jesus is about

  530. to do that

  531. for us.

  532. The cross

  533. reveals the holiness

  534. of God,

  535. the righteousness

  536. of God,

  537. the perfection

  538. of God.

  539. Friends,

  540. the cross

  541. demonstrates

  542. God's passion

  543. for his holiness.

  544. God is so holy

  545. and so set apart

  546. that he cannot

  547. even tolerate

  548. even an ounce

  549. of sin

  550. in his presence.

  551. And so he

  552. utterly

  553. and totally

  554. dealt

  555. and destroyed

  556. sin

  557. by dealing

  558. with Christ

  559. on the cross.

  560. Friends,

  561. think about

  562. how the cross

  563. demonstrates

  564. the mercy

  565. of God.

  566. That though

  567. we don't

  568. deserve it,

  569. God welcomes

  570. us into his

  571. family and doesn't

  572. give us what we

  573. deserve but gave

  574. it to Christ

  575. instead.

  576. The apostle

  577. Paul writes,

  578. he says,

  579. though we were

  580. dead in our sins

  581. following the

  582. ways of this

  583. world,

  584. though we were

  585. slaves to our

  586. sin,

  587. because of God

  588. being rich

  589. in mercy,

  590. because of his

  591. great love for us,

  592. even when we were

  593. dead in our sins,

  594. God made us alive

  595. together.

  596. Think about how

  597. the cross reveals

  598. the profound

  599. love of God.

  600. That God,

  601. because he,

  602. Jesus loved God

  603. the Father,

  604. he loved his

  605. glory,

  606. he loved you

  607. and I,

  608. he loved his

  609. creation that he

  610. made,

  611. and he saw

  612. that we were

  613. wayward and

  614. gone and so

  615. lost that we

  616. couldn't even

  617. find our way

  618. back to God,

  619. he went and

  620. he died for us.

  621. Romans says

  622. this,

  623. he says,

  624. scarcely will

  625. someone die for

  626. someone else.

  627. Not very often

  628. will someone say,

  629. hey, I'll die in

  630. your place,

  631. but maybe if you

  632. meet a very

  633. good man,

  634. a very righteous

  635. man,

  636. maybe if you

  637. meet a very

  638. honorable man

  639. and you're

  640. really humble,

  641. you'll lay down

  642. your life for

  643. that person.

  644. But God so

  645. loves us that

  646. this,

  647. while we were

  648. sinners,

  649. while we were

  650. enemies of God,

  651. while we had

  652. given God the

  653. middle finger,

  654. God sent his

  655. son to die for

  656. us.

  657. Friends,

  658. think about how

  659. the cross reveals

  660. the profound

  661. love of God

  662. for us.

  663. Friends,

  664. the cross of

  665. Jesus is not

  666. just a good

  667. example to

  668. show us how

  669. to live,

  670. not just to

  671. teach us to

  672. forgive those

  673. that have

  674. hurt us or

  675. how to turn

  676. the other

  677. cheek.

  678. It does all

  679. those things,

  680. but more than

  681. this,

  682. the cross reveals

  683. to us the

  684. perfect nature and

  685. the character of

  686. Jesus.

  687. Jesus says,

  688. now is the time

  689. that you're going

  690. to see me for

  691. who I am.

  692. Now is the time

  693. that I'm going

  694. to be glorified.

  695. Now is the time

  696. you're going to

  697. see me for who

  698. I really am.

  699. Now is the time

  700. that you'll get

  701. to know me as

  702. God.

  703. Friends,

  704. for hundreds

  705. of years God

  706. had been speaking

  707. to his people

  708. through the

  709. prophets,

  710. through the

  711. angels,

  712. through signs

  713. and wonders,

  714. through the

  715. temple,

  716. through the

  717. priests,

  718. and in all

  719. those moments

  720. he was showing

  721. them just a

  722. glimpse of his

  723. glory.

  724. He was showing

  725. them just a

  726. tiny percentage

  727. of who he was.

  728. But here,

  729. fully and finally,

  730. in a far more

  731. dramatic way than

  732. had ever been

  733. seen before,

  734. as Jesus hung on

  735. the cross,

  736. God says,

  737. this is who I

  738. am.

  739. I'm the

  740. sovereign God,

  741. I'm sovereign

  742. over everything.

  743. I'm the God

  744. of profound

  745. mercy.

  746. I'm the God

  747. who is holy

  748. and just.

  749. I'm the God

  750. of profound

  751. love.

  752. Friends,

  753. if you want

  754. to know God,

  755. you want to

  756. know who

  757. Jesus really

  758. is,

  759. you understand

  760. who this

  761. God is,

  762. you have to

  763. find him at

  764. the cross.

  765. Don't just

  766. come to him

  767. as an example.

  768. Don't just

  769. come to him

  770. as a martyr,

  771. as a good

  772. man who was

  773. a victim of

  774. his times.

  775. You have to

  776. come to the

  777. one who

  778. said,

  779. for this

  780. purpose I

  781. was born.

  782. I came

  783. for this

  784. hour.

  785. You have

  786. to find

  787. him at

  788. the cross.

  789. Okay,

  790. so first

  791. reason,

  792. how does

  793. the cross

  794. glorify

  795. Jesus?

  796. It shows

  797. us who

  798. he really

  799. is.

  800. Second

  801. reason is

  802. this,

  803. that's the

  804. longest

  805. one.

  806. Second

  807. reason is

  808. this,

  809. the cross

  810. reveals the

  811. power of

  812. God,

  813. the profound

  814. power of

  815. God to

  816. change lives.

  817. Now

  818. remember,

  819. who is it

  820. that comes

  821. to Jesus,

  822. that provokes

  823. Jesus to

  824. make this

  825. dramatic

  826. statement?

  827. Who comes

  828. to him and

  829. says,

  830. we want

  831. to see

  832. you?

  833. It's the

  834. Greeks,

  835. right?

  836. It's the

  837. Gentiles.

  838. It's not

  839. the Jewish

  840. people,

  841. it's the

  842. Gentiles.

  843. And where

  844. are they?

  845. They're in

  846. Jerusalem.

  847. They've come

  848. to Jerusalem

  849. because they

  850. want to

  851. worship.

  852. They've come

  853. for the

  854. Passover

  855. festival.

  856. Now,

  857. many of us

  858. will know

  859. that the

  860. Gentiles

  861. were able

  862. to come

  863. to Jerusalem,

  864. they were

  865. able to go

  866. to the

  867. temple,

  868. but they

  869. could only

  870. remain on

  871. the outside

  872. of the

  873. temple.

  874. They

  875. couldn't

  876. go to

  877. the

  878. inner

  879. court.

  880. There's

  881. two

  882. courts,

  883. there's

  884. the

  885. inner

  886. court

  887. for

  888. the

  889. Jews,

  890. and

  891. then

  892. there's

  893. the

  894. outer

  895. court

  896. where

  897. the

  898. Gentiles

  899. had to

  900. remain.

  901. Now,

  902. some of

  903. the

  904. Gentiles,

  905. if they

  906. had fully

  907. converted

  908. and been

  909. circumcised

  910. and gone

  911. through all

  912. the things,

  913. some of

  914. them could

  915. have gone

  916. to the

  917. inner

  918. court,

  919. but for

  920. most of

  921. them,

  922. the Gentiles

  923. had to

  924. remain on

  925. the

  926. outer

  927. court,

  928. and there's

  929. actually a

  930. wall that

  931. divides the

  932. Jews from

  933. the

  934. Gentiles.

  935. And in

  936. Jesus'

  937. day,

  938. there are

  939. big signs

  940. on the

  941. wall that

  942. say,

  943. stay out,

  944. no Gentiles

  945. allowed in

  946. the inner

  947. court.

  948. Okay?

  949. And of

  950. course,

  951. it wasn't

  952. just in

  953. the temple.

  954. For

  955. centuries,

  956. Jews and

  957. Gentiles

  958. didn't get

  959. along.

  960. They

  961. wouldn't

  962. eat

  963. together.

  964. The Jews

  965. were meant

  966. to be a

  967. light to

  968. the Gentiles,

  969. to welcome

  970. them in,

  971. and the

  972. Gentiles

  973. should have

  974. respected

  975. the Jews.

  976. They're both

  977. to blame.

  978. But for

  979. centuries,

  980. they've

  981. been at

  982. each other.

  983. They

  984. wouldn't

  985. eat in

  986. each

  987. other's

  988. houses.

  989. They

  990. wouldn't

  991. share a

  992. meal

  993. together.

  994. They

  995. wouldn't

  996. cross the

  997. door,

  998. the

  999. threstle

  1000. of the

  1001. door,

  1002. to go

  1003. into

  1004. each

  1005. other's

  1006. houses.

  1007. Certainly

  1008. wouldn't

  1009. be in

  1010. partnership

  1011. and business

  1012. together.

  1013. And so

  1014. here the

  1015. Jews and

  1016. Gentiles

  1017. don't get

  1018. along.

  1019. But what

  1020. we read

  1021. is just a

  1022. few chapters

  1023. later in

  1024. Acts chapter

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  1025. 10,

  1026. Peter,

  1027. a Jew,

  1028. goes and

  1029. has a meal

  1030. with a

  1031. Gentile.

  1032. He goes

  1033. inside his

  1034. home.

  1035. They break

  1036. bread together.

  1037. They worship

  1038. together.

  1039. The Holy

  1040. Spirit falls

  1041. on both

  1042. of them

  1043. and they

  1044. end up

  1045. praising God

  1046. together.

  1047. And later

  1048. on the

  1049. apostle Paul

  1050. writes to a

  1051. bunch of

  1052. Gentiles and

  1053. he says,

  1054. remember how

  1055. just formerly

  1056. you were called

  1057. the uncircumcision

  1058. by those who

  1059. regard themselves

  1060. as circumcision.

  1061. You were called

  1062. dogs and

  1063. inferior by those

  1064. who recognize

  1065. themselves as

  1066. superior.

  1067. But now,

  1068. he says,

  1069. in Christ

  1070. Jesus,

  1071. you who were

  1072. once inferior,

  1073. you who were

  1074. once far off,

  1075. you who were

  1076. once regarded

  1077. as second

  1078. class,

  1079. now you've

  1080. been brought

  1081. near,

  1082. how?

  1083. By the

  1084. blood of

  1085. Christ on

  1086. the cross.

  1087. For Christ

  1088. is our

  1089. peace.

  1090. He has

  1091. broken down

  1092. the dividing

  1093. wall of

  1094. hostility and

  1095. he has created

  1096. in himself one

  1097. new man out

  1098. of the two,

  1099. thus making

  1100. peace.

  1101. Friends,

  1102. for the very

  1103. first time in

  1104. the history of

  1105. the world,

  1106. here can both

  1107. Jew and

  1108. Gentile,

  1109. slave and

  1110. free,

  1111. rich and

  1112. poor,

  1113. educated and

  1114. uneducated,

  1115. male and

  1116. female,

  1117. worshipped God,

  1118. come together,

  1119. stand shoulder to

  1120. shoulder,

  1121. knowing that they

  1122. are equally

  1123. chosen in God,

  1124. equally loved by

  1125. God,

  1126. equally sinners

  1127. for whom Jesus

  1128. died on the

  1129. cross.

  1130. Why?

  1131. Because Christ,

  1132. by dying on the

  1133. cross,

  1134. broke the power

  1135. of sin and

  1136. self-centeredness

  1137. and self-righteousness

  1138. and now for the

  1139. first time both

  1140. Jews and

  1141. Gentiles,

  1142. Greeks and

  1143. slaves and

  1144. free and

  1145. rich and

  1146. poor and

  1147. educated and

  1148. uneducated have

  1149. a new identity

  1150. that says I'm

  1151. loved and

  1152. chosen by

  1153. God.

  1154. Friends,

  1155. the cross is at

  1156. one and the

  1157. same time the

  1158. most awful day

  1159. in the history of

  1160. the world but

  1161. it's the most

  1162. glorious day in

  1163. the history of

  1164. the world as

  1165. Jesus broke the

  1166. power of sin.

  1167. Jesus destroyed

  1168. our self-righteousness.

  1169. Jesus destroyed

  1170. our self-centeredness

  1171. in the lives of

  1172. his followers.

  1173. How else do you

  1174. explain what

  1175. happened to the

  1176. apostle Paul?

  1177. Right?

  1178. The apostle Paul,

  1179. he goes around and

  1180. he's destroying the

  1181. church.

  1182. Anyone even gives a

  1183. hint that maybe

  1184. they're a follower of

  1185. Jesus and he

  1186. arrests them, he

  1187. puts them in jail

  1188. and maybe some of

  1189. them even die.

  1190. And a few years

  1191. later, something

  1192. happens and his

  1193. life turns around.

  1194. And the church

  1195. starts to say,

  1196. we don't know what

  1197. happened to this

  1198. man but one thing

  1199. we know, the man

  1200. that was once

  1201. persecuting us is

  1202. now preaching the

  1203. very message he

  1204. tried to destroy.

  1205. How do you

  1206. explain that?

  1207. Except by the

  1208. power of the

  1209. gospel.

  1210. Paul writes this

  1211. and he says,

  1212. I'm not ashamed

  1213. of the gospel.

  1214. Why?

1215. It is the power of

  1216. God for salvation

  1217. to change lives

  1218. around.

  1219. Back in Cape

  1220. Town where we

  1221. come from, one

  1222. of my very good

  1223. friends there, one

  1224. of my closest

  1225. friends, his name

  1226. is Gordon.

  1227. You call him

  1228. Gordy.

  1229. And Gordy became

  1230. a Christ follower

  1231. about eight or nine

  1232. years ago.

  1233. And before that

  1234. he was a heroin

  1235. addict.

  1236. He had been in

  1237. and out of rehab

  1238. many years and his

  1239. parents had tried

  1240. everything.

  1241. Anyway, one day he

  1242. comes out of rehab

1243. and he says, this is

1244. the time I'm going to

  1245. sort out my life.

1246. This is the time I'm

  1247. a changed man.

  1248. I'm not going back

  1249. to drugs.

  1250. But it's not too

  1251. long before his

  1252. addictions get the

  1253. better of him.

1254. And so one night he

  1255. calls his drug dealer

1256. up and he says, hey,

1257. I need you to help

  1258. me out.

  1259. He goes and he

  1260. meets his dealer and

  1261. he buys some heroin.

  1262. And he's driving

1263. home and on the way

1264. home he gets a vision

  1265. of Jesus Christ.

  1266. And he's so petrified

1267. that he stops his car

  1268. at the next traffic

  1269. light, opens his

  1270. door, throws the

  1271. drugs on the floor,

  1272. calls his friend and

  1273. says, Garth,

  1274. something's happened

1275. to me, I need to

  1276. speak to you.

  1277. Drives to Garth's

  1278. house.

  1279. Now Garth had just

  1280. become a Christian

  1281. about six months

  1282. before.

  1283. These two guys used

  1284. to party it up

  1285. together and now

  1286. Garth had just

  1287. become a Christian.

  1288. And so Gordy

  1289. phones him and

  1290. says, Garth, I need

  1291. to talk to you.

  1292. And he goes to

  1293. Garth's house and

  1294. Garth helps him,

  1295. explains what

  1296. happens and that

  1297. night Gordy

  1298. surrenders his life

  1299. to Jesus and he

  1300. becomes a follower

  1301. of Jesus.

  1302. About five days

  1303. later, Gordy comes

  1304. to our CG.

  1305. He's a brand new

  1306. Christian and he

  1307. looks a mess,

  1308. right?

  1309. He looks like a

  1310. gangster or something.

  1311. He's got a big

  1312. gold chain on,

  1313. he's got a cap

  1314. pulled down low

  1315. and he doesn't

  1316. look very happy

  1317. but something's

  1318. happened to him.

  1319. And he goes

  1320. through that CG

  1321. and he's talking

  1322. and he's contributing

  1323. and Gordy can't

  1324. say one sentence

  1325. without swearing.

  1326. He's just swearing

  1327. the whole night

  1328. long.

  1329. He goes outside

  1330. for smoke just

  1331. now and but he

  1332. kept on coming

  1333. back to Christ.

  1334. He kept on coming

  1335. back to the cross.

  1336. He kept on coming

  1337. to Jesus not just

  1338. as an example but

  1339. as a savior.

  1340. About a week

  1341. later, our CG

  1342. goes to a combined

  1343. church service.

  1344. A whole bunch of

  1345. churches in Cape Town

  1346. come together.

  1347. We have a combined

  1348. service.

1349. And Gordy says to me,

  1350. he says, Kev,

  1351. there are people

  1352. here I thought I

  1353. would never see

  1354. in a church.

1355. And I said to him,

  1356. hey bud, I think

  1357. they're thinking

  1358. the same thing

  1359. about you.

  1360. But you know

  1361. what?

  1362. His life turned

  1363. around.

  1364. His life changed.

  1365. And in one sense

  1366. there was a dramatic

  1367. change but another

1368. sense it was a slow

  1369. change.

  1370. Sometimes Gordy

  1371. would phone me at

  1372. one o'clock in the

  1373. morning and say,

  1374. Kev, you need to

  1375. come to my house.

  1376. I'm about to do

  1377. something stupid.

  1378. I need someone to

  1379. pray with me.

  1380. He'd go there,

  1381. pray.

1382. But he got into the

  1383. scriptures.

  1384. He loved God's word.

  1385. He kept coming to

  1386. Jesus as savior.

  1387. He kept coming to

  1388. the end of himself.

  1389. I remember at one

1390. point I said, he was

  1391. struggling with

  1392. addiction.

  1393. And I said, Gordy,

  1394. you've just got to

  1395. get through one day.

  1396. He said, I've just

  1397. got to get through

  1398. one minute.

1399. If I can get through

1400. one minute at a time,

  1401. that's a victory.

  1402. But friends, today he's

  1403. an elder.

1404. Or just a few months

  1405. before we left, he

1406. became an elder in the

  1407. church.

  1408. He got married in

  1409. January.

  1410. He's a different

  1411. person.

  1412. Why?

1413. Because the gospel is a

  1414. power that changes

  1415. lives.

1416. The gospel is not just

1417. the good news of how to

1418. be a better person, how

1419. to be a moral person, how

1420. to be a better husband.

1421. The gospel is a power

  1422. that changes our lives.

1423. It changes us from the

  1424. inside.

  1425. God.

1426. And Jesus came to do

  1427. that.

  1428. J.C.

1429. Rowe said, Jesus Christ is

  1430. a complete Savior.

  1431. He doesn't merely take

1432. away the guilt of a

  1433. believer's sin.

1434. He does that, but he

  1435. does far more.

  1436. He breaks its power.

  1437. In Colossians chapter

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  1438. 2, Paul writes this.

1439. He says, you were dead in

  1440. your transgressions and

  1441. sin.

1442. Me, I was dead in my

  1443. sin.

1444. But God made us alive

  1445. together with him.

1446. He forgave us our sins and

1447. he canceled the record of

  1448. debt that stood against

  1449. us.

1450. And then he says this.

  1451. And God disarmed the

  1452. rulers and the authorities,

  1453. the spiritual rulers and

  1454. authorities.

1455. God disarmed them by putting

  1456. them to open shame,

  1457. triumphing over them in

  1458. Christ on the cross.

1459. Do you remember in Genesis

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

1460. chapter 3, Adam and Eve

  1461. fall, they sin, they

1462. listen to the snake and

1463. they don't listen to God.

1464. And God speaks to Adam and

  1465. he says, hey, there's

  1466. consequences.

  1467. To Eve, there's

  1468. consequences.

  1469. consequences.

1470. And then God says to the

1471. snake, to Satan, he says,

  1472. you will forever torment

  1473. God's people.

1474. Sin will always be close to

  1475. them.

1476. But there is going to come a

  1477. son of man.

1478. There is going to come a

1479. human being and you will

  1480. bite his heel.

1481. In other words, as a snake,

  1482. you will attack him.

1483. And you might think you've

1484. got the better of him.

1485. But in the way that you

1486. bite him, the way that you

1487. torment him, he will crush

  1488. your head.

  1489. He will destroy you.

  1490. Friends, that's what

  1491. happened on the cross.

1492. On the cross, Satan thought

1493. he got the better of

  1494. Jesus.

1495. He was like a python that

1496. thought he had taken a

  1497. bite of Jesus.

1498. He thought he got the

  1499. better of him.

1500. He thought, now Jesus is

  1501. dead.

1502. But in the very moment that

1503. Christ was hanging on the

  1504. cross, Christ was crushing

1505. the head of his enemy.

1506. Friends, on the cross, Jesus

  1507. Christ accomplished the most

  1508. astounding victory when he

  1509. dethroned sin.

1510. He overcome evil and he

  1511. defanged Satan.

1512. Even though it looked like

1513. sin and evil was getting

1514. the better of him, Christ

  1515. was accomplishing a

  1516. victorious and magnificent

  1517. victory.

1518. On the cross, as strange as

1519. it seemed, as unusual as

1520. it seemed, Jesus is about

1521. to die and he cries out,

  1522. it is finished.

  1523. What is finished?

  1524. The atonement.

1525. He's paid the price for our

1526. sin, but also the victory

  1527. over his enemy.

  1528. It is finished.

  1529. First, friends, the cross

1530. of Calvary is a strange

  1531. glory.

  1532. It's an obscure glory.

1533. It looked like the most

1534. shameful day in the history

1535. of the world, but actually

1536. in that moment, Christ was

  1537. achieving his greatest

  1538. victory.

1539. How does the cross reveal

  1540. the glory of God?

1541. It reveals the power of

  1542. Christ over his enemy.

  1543. Third thing is this.

  1544. It reveals Christ's radical

1545. passion for his glory, for

  1546. his father's glory.

1547. Look at verse 27 with me.

  1548. Verse 27 says,

1549. Now my soul is troubled, and

  1550. what shall I say?

1551. Father, save me from this

  1552. hour?

1553. No, for this very purpose

1554. I've come to this hour.

  1555. Father, glorify your name.

  1556. Throughout the gospel, Jesus

  1557. demonstrates radical devotion

1558. and radical obedience to the

  1559. glory of his father.

  1560. Jesus is constantly saying

1561. things like, I've come not to

1562. do my will, but the will of my

  1563. father in heaven.

1564. I've come not to please

1565. myself, but my father in

  1566. heaven.

  1567. I have a job to do.

1568. It's to fulfill the work of

  1569. my father.

  1570. Jesus is radically committed

1571. to the glory of his heavenly

  1572. father.

1573. Now contrast that with verse

  1574. 42.

1575. Look at what it says here.

  1576. It says,

  1577. Nevertheless, many of the

  1578. authorities believed in

  1579. Jesus.

  1580. So intellectually, they've done

1581. the sums, they've done the

  1582. accounting.

  1583. They reckon there's more

  1584. evidence for Jesus than

  1585. against him.

  1586. They believed in him

  1587. intellectually.

1588. Yet, for fear of the

  1589. Pharisees, they did not

1590. confess it, so that they

1591. would not be put out of the

  1592. synagogue.

1593. For they loved the glory that

1594. comes from man more than the

1595. glory that comes from God.

1596. Friends, it's not only kings

  1597. and queens, presidents and

  1598. governors that love to

  1599. display their glory.

1600. This thirst for the praise of

1601. men and to be made much of,

1602. to be praised and honored is

  1603. actually something that lives

1604. inside each one of us.

1605. And it makes us make crazy

  1606. decisions, doesn't it?

1607. It drives us to trade that

1608. which is important for that

  1609. which is temporary.

1610. It causes us to sell our

1611. souls to the highest bidder.

1612. And yet the irony is the one

1613. man, the one human being who

1614. deserved the glory, the one

1615. human being who deserved to be

  1616. honored and glorified, the

1617. creator of all things, including

1618. the very people that were

1619. nailing him to the cross, the

  1620. sovereign God before whom

1621. every knee will bow, the one

1622. man who deserved for men and

1623. women to bow down before him,

1624. in that moment lays aside his

1625. glory so that you and I can be

  1626. welcomed into his glory.

1627. Friends, if ever there was an

  1628. irony, this is it.

1629. Christ, the king of glory, should

1630. allow himself to be mocked and

1631. scorned so that you and I can

  1632. enter his glory.

  1633. Jesus, the cross demonstrates

1634. Christ's profound devotion to his

  1635. father's glory.

1636. Fourth thing and finally is this.

1637. Why is the cross glorious?

1638. Why is the cross more glorious

  1639. than a crown?

  1640. Fourth thing is this.

1641. It shows us the pattern of the

1642. godly life, the Godward life.

1643. Now, this is the final point.

1644. In some ways, this grounds all this

  1645. theology into everyday life.

1646. I want us to stay awake.

  1647. Okay, we're almost done.

  1648. The counter-cultural,

  1649. counter-intuitive message of the

1650. cross is that what is true for

1651. Christ our Savior and what the

1652. apostles soon found was true for

1653. them is actually true for every

  1654. follower of Jesus.

1655. And that is that the way to glory

  1656. passes through Calvary.

1657. The way to glory passes through

  1658. Calvary.

1659. Jesus' hour revealed not only his

1660. glory but also our way to glory.

1661. Look at what happens in verse 24.

  1662. Jesus says this.

  1663. He says,

1664. Truly, I say to you, unless a grain

1665. of wheat falls to the ground and

  1666. dies, it remains alone.

1667. But if it dies, it bears much fruit.

1668. And that's the glory of the cross,

  1669. right?

1670. From this moment on, Jesus is going

1671. to die but it's going to yield a

1672. harvest of millions of souls around

  1673. the world, right?

1674. Jesus dies that we can live.

1675. But then Jesus looks at each one of

1676. us in the eye and he says,

1677. What's true for me is also true for

  1678. you.

  1679. He says,

1680. Whoever loves his life will lose it.

1681. And whoever hates his life in this

  1682. world, comparatively speaking,

  1683. will actually find life.

1684. If everyone serves me, he must

  1685. follow me.

  1686. Follow me where?

1687. To Calvary, to the cross, to

  1688. Golgotha.

1689. For where I am, there my servant will

  1690. be also.

1691. But then he gives this hope.

  1692. He says,

  1693. Don't be disheartened.

1694. Those who serve me, the Father

1695. will honor them as well.

1696. Friends, this is what differentiates

1697. true faith in Christ from man-centered

  1698. religion.

1699. In man-centered religion, we come to

1700. Jesus to make our lives more

  1701. comfortable and convenient.

1702. We come to Jesus to make our lives

1703. better, to make our lives not as

  1704. difficult.

1705. But true faith is when we come to

1706. Jesus and say, Christ, I'll follow you.

1707. I'll follow you to the cross.

1708. Just as the Gentiles came to Jesus

1709. and say, God, what can you add to

1710. our religion to make our religion

  1711. better?

1712. How can you help us?

1713. So we do it so often.

1714. But Jesus says that actually, the way

1715. to true life, the way to glory, is to

  1716. follow him through Calvary.

1717. Now, there's two implications of this

  1718. to think about.

1719. The first one is this.

1720. That which seems glorious is often

  1721. not.

  1722. Okay?

1723. So think about this when you go to

  1724. work.

1725. Think about this when you go to school

  1726. this week.

1727. Think about this when you choose a

  1728. university.

1729. Think about this when you choose a

  1730. career.

1731. Think about this in the way that you

  1732. parent your children.

1733. Think about this in the way that you

  1734. spend your money.

  1735. You seek that promotion.

1736. You look for a job.

1737. You look for a house.

1738. That which seems most glorious is

  1739. often not.

1740. But we started off talking about the

1741. way that kings and queens love to be

  1742. honored.

  1743. Right?

1744. They love to display their glory.

1745. And a few minutes ago we said that's

1746. not just true for kings and queens.

1747. It's actually true for all of us.

1748. All of us love to be glorified.

1749. We love to win the marathons that people

1750. can say we've done well.

  1751. Right?

1752. And we all do that in our own way.

1753. And the world has a way of seducing us

1754. in such a way that that which seems

  1755. glorious and praiseworthy is

  1756. attractive.

1757. But actually the upside down nature of

1758. the gospel is that these things pass

  1759. away.

1760. These things which look so promising

1761. and promise us so much actually

  1762. often disappoint us.

1763. Those things which promise us happiness

1764. and contentment actually often leave

1765. our souls empty and dry.

1766. Isn't that what Jordan just said to us

  1767. a few minutes ago?

1768. He said he was running marathons in

  1769. pursuit of glory.

1770. But that didn't make me happy.

1771. Friends, can I ask you this?

1772. What are you going to spend your one and only

  1773. life in?

1774. What are you going to invest your one and only

  1775. life in?

1776. How are you going to spend your life?

1777. Are you going to invest in that which will

  1778. puff you up?

  1779. Make you feel important?

1780. Make you feel special for a day?

  1781. A year?

  1782. Maybe even a decade?

1783. Friends, will you spend your life pursuing

1784. what our culture says is honorable and

1785. glorious and beautiful, but in the end

1786. will just pass away like the grass?

1787. Blow away like a cloud on a cloudy day.

1788. Friends, why don't you invest your life in

1789. that which is going to last?

1790. It might not look glorious.

1791. It might not look beautiful.

1792. You might not get the praise of men and

1793. women, but it's the thing that will

1794. satisfy your soul and it's the thing

  1795. that will count.

  1796. Second thing is this.

1797. That which seems hopeless is actually not.

1798. The cross tells us that the things in life

1799. which seem most hopeless, most redundant,

1800. most meaningless and without value are

1801. actually often the places where God

  1802. himself is.

1803. The sickness of a child, the pain of being

1804. retrenched, the hardship of financial

1805. difficulty, the shame of persecution for

1806. sharing your faith, being passed over for

1807. promotion and everyone else in the office

1808. gets promoted except you, the death of a

1809. loved one, being diagnosed with an incurable

  1810. disease.

1811. Friends, in these moments, if we come to

1812. Christ and find our glory, if we come to

1813. Christ as our hope for glory, often in these

1814. places we'll drink deeply of the wonder and

1815. the beauty and the majesty of God.

1816. We'll find something about the glory of Christ

1817. that you'll never find in high street.

1818. In the bitterness of soul, we taste the

  1819. sweetest delights.

1820. Friends, today Jesus calls each one of us to

  1821. follow him.

1822. He calls us to follow him not in splendor,

1823. not in ease, not in comfort and convenience.

1824. He calls us to follow him to Calvary.

1825. He calls us to follow him to the cross.

1826. Jesus calls us to pick up our cross, to die to

1827. self, to die to our sin, to crucify our pride.

1828. But he says in that place you'll rise again to

  1829. new life.

1830. In that place you'll discover a life you could

1831. never have dreamt of, never imagined in your

  1832. wildest dreams.

1833. Friends, the way of self-crucifixion seems

  1834. foolishness.

  1835. It seems meaningless.

1836. It seems wasteful to our world and our

  1837. culture.

1838. But friends, there's never lived a single

1839. follower of Jesus who hasn't found that

1840. dying to themselves and saying yes to Christ

1841. has not been the way to meaningful life and

  1842. eternal life.

1843. Friends, this is the way to glory.

1844. This is the way to real life.

1845. This is the way to eternal life.

1846. This is the way to life that you were made

  1847. for.

1848. Let's come to him now.

  1849. Let's pray together.

  1850. Let's pray together.

  1851. Let's pray together.

1852. Jesus Christ, God, we so need you to see the

1853. world the way it really is.

  1854. Let's pray together.

1855. God, our culture would love to disciple us,

1856. telling us to pursue our own glory, telling

1857. us to pursue a life of comfort and ease, to seek our

  1858. own glory, God.

1859. And yet, Jesus, as you told us, the way of self-glory

  1860. leads to death.

1861. Father, as a church, won't you lead us to follow you?

1862. Won't you help us, Christ, to become more like you, God?

1863. Jesus, in our everyday life, God, won't you help us to fix our

1864. eyes on you and in you to find our glory?

1865. Jesus, help us to be like the apostle Paul who said, I had everything going for me.

1866. I had the career, the reputation, the money, the wealth, the prestige, the honor, but all

1867. those things I consider as rubbish compared to knowing Christ.

1868. Jesus, won't you help us to live an upside-down life, contrary to the way of the world?

  1869. Lord.

1870. Christ, we come to you now.

1871. God, we confess that so often we live for ourselves.

1872. Father, won't you forgive us?

1873. God, don't just forgive us, won't you reorientate our lives?

1874. Won't you bring us back to the cross?

1875. Jesus, won't you lead us to the cross?

1876. Lead us to that place where your love and your mercy, your holiness and your justice,

1877. your sovereignty and your grace met.

1878. Father, I pray, may we, as followers of Jesus, not march to the drumbeat of our culture and

  1879. of our time.

1880. May we get a glimpse of who you are.

  1881. March to your drumbeat.

1882. God, may we live differently because we've seen you, because we've seen your glory.

1883. Friends, maybe just as we sing this next song, I want to encourage you to respond.

1884. Won't you come to Jesus and in your own words, won't you ask him to open your eyes to see his glory?

1885. In your own words, won't you come to him and confess how easily we live for our own glory?

1886. In your own eyes, won't you ask him to lead you back to the cross?

1887. Let's respond to him in worship.
