  1. Father, many of us who are Christians, we forget who we are.

  2. We sort of remember it when we're in church, but then we forget who we are.

  3. And Father, in fact, many of us who are Christians live our lives as if we are only half saved, not fully saved.

  4. Father, we ask that your Holy Spirit would move very powerfully in our lives

  5. and open your word to us and bring your word home to us, Father,

  6. so that we might be disciples of Jesus who are gripped by the gospel

  7. and learning to live day by day for your glory.

  8. And this we ask in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  9. Please be seated.

  10. I guess because I'm in Canada and because I'm white, I don't often think of race.

  11. But when I was in Angola, my race was very powerfully evident to me in different ways.

  12. And I saw in very powerful ways how race can affect how you're perceived and what you're able to do.

  13. So when I was in Angola this summer, I was in a poorer part of, like most of Angola is poor.

  14. So that doesn't really narrow it down.

  15. I was in Lubangu, as many of you know, and it's like a lot of poor people in that city.

  16. And, you know, in fact, I was just thinking as I was trying to the 8 o'clock service,

  17. the house that I was staying at, like on a sort of very busy road,

  18. just about, like from your point of view, if you're looking out at the road,

  19. about 20 yards that way, there was a pothole.

  20. And listen, if you think there's potholes in Ottawa, you have never been to a place like Lubangu.

  21. When I say there was a pothole, it was probably about, I don't know, like about, you know,

  22. from here to that table.

  23. And it was probably from about this chair to the edge of the stage.

  24. And it must have been about two feet deep.

  25. Now that's a pothole, okay?

  26. So it dawned on me that it actually was very convenient for Norm and Audrey,

  27. whose house I was staying in, because all the cars coming this way

  28. had to basically go into the other lane of traffic to get around the pothole,

  29. which always meant that it was easy for them to back out of their driveway

  30. and go to where they were going.

  31. I don't know if they picked the house because of that.

  32. They probably didn't.

  33. But anyway, it's a very poor city.

  34. And I had decided I was going to go for a walk to buy some milk.

  35. And so I go.

  36. It's about a 10-minute walk.

  37. You know, there's sewage on the streets, garbage everywhere.

  38. You know, all the sidewalks are broken.

  39. The road is broken.

  40. It's dry.

  41. It's dusty.

  42. It's very poor.

  43. And I hadn't quite realized what I was about to see

  44. because I go through a lot of beggars,

  45. a fair number of children in particular who are begging,

  46. and I step past them.

  47. And all of a sudden, the pavement is perfect.

  48. And I look, and I realize that the building is perfect,

  49. and it's almost as if I'm in a first-world mall.

  50. And in fact, that's what it was.

  51. It was a mall made by Brazilian and Portuguese and rich Angolans,

  52. and it had a multiplex movie theater.

  53. I could have watched the summer's edition of Spider-Man there

  54. and other hit Hollywood movies.

  55. There was electronics stores, sporting goods stores,

  56. and a very, very good, like you would have thought

  57. that you were in a really nice, clean grocery store here in Canada.

  58. But here's the thing.

  59. There are lots and lots and lots of security guards,

  60. like lots of security guards.

  61. And they're everywhere, and they're giving everybody the look,

  62. but they just glance at me, and I go in.

  63. Why?

  64. I'm white.

  65. I'm white.

  66. I'm treated differently.

  67. And it was actually sort of very odd for me to realize

  68. that all the other people would get a close look,

  69. but I could just walk in because I'm white.

  70. There were certain assumptions about me.

  71. And I mean, in many ways, they were correct assumptions,

  72. but they were still assumptions just because I was white.

  73. The text that Ken read just a few minutes ago

  74. actually has a virus in it

  75. that after it has been written,

  76. and in much of the world it's been separated from the root,

  77. but there's a virus text that Ken just read a few minutes ago in Galatians

  78. that has gone on to slowly infiltrate

  79. and affect much of the thinking throughout the world,

  80. even though people might not realize that it ultimately came from a text

  81. explaining the implications of the gospel.

  82. And so for many people, it's separate from the gospel.

  83. It's just this idea that's become a bit of a virus throughout the entire world

  84. that something's wrong about a whole range of things that go on in the world,

  85. and it starts off in this letter to Galatians.

  86. So if you have your Bibles, it would be very helpful if you looked at it with me.

  87. It's one of the implications of the gospel,

  88. and it's in Galatians chapter 3,

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

  89. and we're going to begin reading at verse 26,

  90. which is where our text begins.

  91. Galatians 3, 26, and here's how it goes.

  92. For in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God through faith.

  93. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

  94. There is neither Jew nor Greek.

  95. There is neither slave nor free.

  96. There is no male and female.

  97. For you are all one in Christ Jesus.

  98. You can see that virus?

  99. Like it's separated from the gospel.

  100. It's all one of the implications of the gospel,

  101. that if you are in Christ Jesus,

  102. there is no Jew or pagan.

  103. There is no slave or free.

  104. There is no male and female if you're in Christ Jesus,

  105. if you've received the gospel.

  106. It's an implication of the gospel,

  107. but this is a tale of radical equality.

  108. Radical equality.

  109. That a slave should be treated the same way that a free man.

  110. That a male should be treated the same way as a female and vice versa.

  111. That Jew and Gentile, we should be treated the same.

  112. It is an idea that has gone throughout the world,

  113. even though it's maybe been separated from the gospel.

  114. It's one of those implications of the gospel that changed the world.

  115. Now, some of you might say,

  116. you know, George, that's actually, like, that's interesting.

  117. I'd heard of that text before,

  118. and that's a very interesting idea.

  119. I hadn't sort of thought about how that has, in fact,

  120. you know, like in ancient Greek thought,

  121. in a much pagan society,

  122. where you are was where you deserve.

  123. The king was a god.

  124. The king was a god.

  125. And where you were was where you were deserved.

  126. In Hindu creation myths,

  127. the caste system is part of the Hindu creation myth,

  128. the creation system.

  129. So you deserve to be there.

  130. And here we have an implication of the gospel

  131. that human beings are,

  132. that these differences,

  133. that you're still going to have differences,

  134. but there's a basic type of dignity

  135. and way I've been treated.

  136. And some of you might say,

  137. George, that's a very interesting idea.

  138. I hadn't really thought of it.

  139. But, George, you know,

  140. isn't the text unbelievably hypocritical?

  141. Like, because they go ahead and say that,

  142. but, George, all the way through,

  143. if I remember correctly,

  144. Ken was reading that text.

  145. He kept saying sons, sons, sons, sons.

  146. Like, isn't that sexist?

  147. Like, isn't that just typical of Christians?

  148. You have this high-finding idea,

  149. but it's just covering a bit of a rot underneath,

  150. something which is fundamentally wrong.

  151. Actually, the fact that all the way through,

  152. the word sons is used,

  153. and not child,

  154. is unbelievably good news.

  155. Unbelievably, powerfully good news.

  156. Listen to it again,

  157. and then I'll explain.

  158. Listen to verse,

  159. begin at verse 26.

  160. Just listen to how it goes.

  161. For in Christ Jesus,

  162. you are all sons of God.

  163. And if your version says child of God,

  164. it's a bad translation.

  165. The word sons should be there,

  166. as I'll explain in a moment.

  167. For in Christ Jesus,

  168. you are all sons of God through faith.

  169. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ

  170. have put on Christ.

  171. There is neither Jew nor Greek.

  172. There is neither slave nor free.

  173. There is no male and female.

  174. For you are all one in Christ Jesus.

  175. And if you could put up the first point,

  176. Andrew, that would be great,

  177. and I'll explain it,

  178. why this is actually very,

  179. very powerfully good news.

  180. It'll be there in a second.

  181. Jew or Gentile,

  182. slave or free,

  183. male and female,

  184. when we put our faith in Jesus Christ

  185. as our Savior,

  186. we become God's adopted son

  187. and full heir.

  188. So,

  189. my wife is from a family of five kids.

  190. There were four girls,

  191. and I don't know,

  192. like five years and a bit.

  193. And then there was like a five-year gap

  194. or something like that,

  195. and then Richard comes along.

  196. In the ancient world,

  197. at the time that this was written,

  198. when Louise's dad died,

  199. 95% of the estate

  200. would not have gone to the oldest girl.

  201. The estate would not have been divided

  202. equally amongst 20% each.

  203. 95% of the estate

  204. would have gone to Richard.

  205. the oldest son.

  206. For most of the ancient world,

  207. and in many parts of the world,

  208. even today,

  209. primogeniture,

  210. that's what it's called,

  211. where you want to keep,

  212. people who are wealthy

  213. want to keep their wealth,

  214. so they give it to the oldest son.

  215. That's,

  216. for many parts of the world,

  217. that's just common sense.

  218. That's just like,

  219. why would you do it any other way?

  220. You know,

  221. with any luck,

  222. Louise's dad would have married

  223. the four daughters off

  224. to people who could look after them.

  225. He probably would have,

  226. I know he was always disappointed in me,

  227. but that's the topic of another sermon,

  228. and maybe therapy for me.

  229. No,

  230. not,

  231. no,

  232. no therapy.

  233. He didn't like me when I think I,

  234. I asked her to marry me,

  235. and I don't think he ever liked me,

  236. but there you go.

  237. That's another topic,

  238. right?

  239. So,

  240. he wouldn't have given me,

  241. that Louise to me,

  242. as a next,

  243. you know,

  244. as a good thing.

  245. But,

  246. so just think about it.

  247. So throughout most,

  248. so what's so radical about this text?

  249. What is so radical about this text,

  250. and why all the way through the text,

  251. it says son,

  252. and in fact,

  253. you can see it in the text,

  254. but in the original language,

  255. it's a technical legal word

  256. for the son who inherits the estate.

  257. So what is this saying?

  258. If you are a slave,

  259. and you have become a Christian,

  260. who are you now?

  261. In terms of God's eyes,

  262. you are the son who will inherit the entire estate.

  263. If you are a woman,

  264. who will not inherit anything,

  265. when you receive Jesus as your savior and Lord,

  266. God has adopted you,

  267. and your status in his eyes,

  268. is the son who will inherit the entire estate.

  269. If you are a female slave,

  270. the bottom of the bottom,

  271. when you put your faith and trust in Jesus,

  272. how does God now view you?

  273. You are the son who will inherit the entire estate.

  274. That's why in good translations of the Bible,

  275. the word son is there all the way through,

  276. and not the word child,

  277. because it's trying to communicate

  278. this unbelievable idea

  279. that God does not weigh our merits,

  280. that the normal order of how things work

  281. the normal way that people think of as being natural,

  282. that is being overturned,

  283. underturned,

  284. upside down,

  285. and that all of the things that might make a person say,

  286. well,

  287. I'm a male,

  288. and I'm rich,

  289. and I'm,

  290. you know,

  291. whatever,

  292. therefore,

  293. obviously,

  294. God's going to love me more.

  295. No,

  296. that's not the case.

  297. He doesn't love you more because of that.

  298. He loves all human beings,

  299. and when we put our faith and trust in Jesus,

  300. we become God's son by adoption.

  301. See,

  302. in the ancient world as well,

  303. it was possible.

  304. It couldn't happen now.

  305. I don't know.

  306. I don't know.

  307. Maybe there's somebody here that's in their 70s,

  308. and God didn't bless you with children,

  309. and in the ancient world,

  310. you could adopt me,

  311. even though I'm,

  312. I'm not going to tell you how old I am,

  313. but even though I'm not like a cute little baby,

  314. you could adopt me so that I would get the whole thing,

  315. and that's what it's saying,

  316. that God has adopted you.

  317. When you put your faith and trust in Jesus,

  318. you put your hand out to him,

  319. he takes you,

  320. and,

  321. you know,

  322. maybe at first when you become a Christian,

  323. who knows?

  324. You just,

  325. you want some hope.

  326. You,

  327. you may want to have some guilt removed.

  328. You want something more.

  329. You don't understand it,

  330. and what the Bible starts to explain,

  331. who you are in Christ,

  332. and who you are in Christ,

  333. is you are now treated by God the Father

  334. as if you are the Son

  335. who will inherit everything,

  336. and you have the rights and privileges

  337. of that new status.

  338. male and female,

  339. Jew and Greek,

  340. slave and free.

  341. It's a very,

  342. very,

  343. very,

  344. very powerful text.

  345. Now,

  346. some of you might say,

  347. whoa,

  348. George,

  349. okay,

  350. that's,

  351. that sounds really quite amazing,

  352. but George,

  353. you Christians have sure sucked

  354. getting that out.

  355. Just the other day,

  356. I was talking to a woman

  357. who grew up in South Africa,

  358. so the mic keeps going in and out.

  359. Is that me,

  360. or what's happening?

  361. You're checking it out.

  362. Okay.

  363. If all of a sudden,

  364. I can't hear,

  365. you can't hear me,

  366. just wave,

  367. and I'll,

  368. I'll just speak louder.

  369. So,

  370. I was just talking the other day

  371. to a woman who grew up in,

  372. in South Africa.

  373. She's white,

  374. grew up in South Africa

  375. under apartheid,

  376. and one of the things

  377. we chatted about

  378. was,

  379. in fact,

  380. there were a lot of churches

  381. that white people went to

  382. in South Africa

  383. that specifically,

  384. in their sermons,

  385. would legitimize racism

  386. from the Bible.

  387. And,

  388. and that's just,

  389. I mean,

  390. this isn't just talking now

  391. about,

  392. you know,

  393. the South or anything like that,

  394. United States.

  395. I mean,

  396. this is,

  397. in the lived memories,

  398. many of you were alive

  399. when there were still churches

  400. in South Africa,

  401. and as we all know,

  402. there's a continuing problem

  403. where somehow or another

  404. people can read the Bible

  405. and see texts like this

  406. and still somehow or another

  407. justify racism.

  408. And so,

  409. the pushback can be,

  410. well,

  411. George,

  412. how on earth does this happen?

  413. Well,

  414. actually,

  415. if you keep reading

  416. in chapter four,

  417. Paul explains how it can happen.

  418. Some of it

  419. is,

  420. in fact,

  421. sort of all right news

  422. and some of it,

  423. in fact,

  424. is,

  425. it can be a little bit,

  426. it's one of that hard parts

  427. of Christianity where,

  428. well,

  429. let's read chapter four,

  430. verses one,

  431. to three.

  432. Here's how it goes.

  433. I mean,

  434. okay,

  435. that the heir,

  436. as long as he is a child,

  437. is no different from a slave,

  438. though he is the owner

  439. of everything,

  440. but he is under guardians

  441. and managers

  442. until the date

  443. set by his father.

  444. What about us?

  445. Or in the same way,

  446. or what about us?

  447. We also,

  448. when we were children,

  449. were enslaved

  450. to the elementary principles

  451. of the world.

  452. Now,

  453. that's a bit of a,

  454. you know,

  455. I have to confess,

  456. I kept telling my wife

  457. all week,

  458. I slaved over that text

  459. trying to figure it out,

  460. but there's two different,

  461. two different ideas

  462. that are at work here.

  463. And the first idea

  464. is this,

  465. it is possible for us

  466. to be the son,

  467. but live like we are a slave.

  468. That's what the point

  469. of the analogy is

  470. in the first two verses,

  471. that,

  472. you know,

  473. on one level,

  474. he just said,

  475. you look at a rich estate

  476. and you see slaves

  477. and you see,

  478. like a young child,

  479. but the young child

  480. is under guardians

  481. and tutors

  482. and in those days,

  483. you know,

  484. the tutor or the guardian

  485. could,

  486. you know,

  487. whack the kid

  488. on their behind

  489. with a stick

  490. or their hand.

  491. It could be very tough,

  492. very demanding

  493. because in the Roman world,

  494. they wanted their kids,

  495. their boys,

  496. to grow up to be men

  497. who were going to be leaders,

  498. so they could be

  499. very tough on them.

  500. And in some ways,

  501. it would look,

  502. you might not even be able

  503. to tell on one level,

  504. at a behavioral level,

  505. whether the person

  506. was a slave

  507. or in fact the heir.

  508. And the point of this is

  509. that we all know,

  510. and we're going to think

  511. about this more in a moment,

  512. but it's possible for us

  513. to have one status

  514. but live as if

  515. we're something else.

  516. I mean,

  517. that's just part of the tragedy

  518. of many of our lives.

  519. And Paul's going to,

  520. to develop this more in a moment,

  521. I'm going to talk more about

  522. in a moment.

  523. But here's the other thing,

  524. which is verse 3.

  525. If you could put up

  526. the next point.

  527. Part of the hard part

  528. about the Bible

  529. for many of us in Canada

  530. that teaches positive self-esteem

  531. all of the time

  532. is that the Bible

  533. is unbelievably frank

  534. about our human condition.

  535. And verse 3 is based,

  536. and it comes in a technical word

  537. for child.

  538. The technical word

  539. for child in the text

  540. means somebody

  541. who's immature,

  542. incompetent,

  543. dispossessed,

  544. and then he adds

  545. something else.

  546. So here it is.

  547. In my natural state,

  548. I am immature,

  549. incompetent,

  550. dispossessed,

  551. and a slave

  552. to elemental powers

  553. and spirits.

  554. In other words,

  555. I serve elemental powers

  556. and spirits

  557. as if I have no choice.

  558. Now this,

  559. see,

  560. here's part of the thing

  561. about the Christian faith.

  562. So the question began,

  563. George,

  564. how on earth is it

  565. that you can account

  566. for the fact

  567. that Christians

  568. have this wonderful text

  569. in Galatians chapter 3,

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

  570. 28,

  571. and then you can have

  572. churches in South Africa

  573. back in the day,

  574. not that long ago,

  575. opening the Bible

  576. and somehow justifying

  577. apartheid

  578. and racism

  579. and terrible things

  580. that went on

  581. in that culture

  582. all from the Bible.

  583. And so Paul says,

  584. well,

  585. I'm going to give you an answer,

  586. but you're not going to like it.

  587. A lot of you Canadians

  588. aren't going to like it.

  589. Part of it you sort of might like,

  590. which is the fact that,

  591. you know,

  592. it is possible

  593. to be a Christian

  594. and live as if

  595. you're not a Christian.

  596. And I guess what I'd have to say

  597. is to the extent

  598. that a church

  599. in South Africa

  600. was preaching apartheid,

  601. they were not living

  602. as Christians.

  603. Not saying they weren't,

  604. but they weren't living as it.

  605. They weren't teaching

  606. as if they were.

  607. They were in serious error.

  608. They were my brothers

  609. and sisters in Christ

  610. in serious error.

  611. Serious error.

  612. But why is it

  613. that that could go on?

  614. Because you have to know

  615. something about human beings.

  616. Human beings are immature,

  617. incompetent,

  618. dispossessed,

  619. and a slave

  620. to elemental powers

  621. and spirits.

  622. Elemental powers,

  623. the fact of the matter is

  624. that there are powers

  625. of money,

  626. there are powers

  627. of class,

  628. there are powers

  629. of sex

  630. and gender,

  631. of religion,

  632. there are powers

  633. of ideology,

  634. and we Christians,

  635. and not just,

  636. sorry,

  637. not just Christians,

  638. now just as a general rule

  639. for human beings,

  640. we easily start

  641. to serve these things.

  642. If you go back

  643. and read Genesis 3 once again,

  644. it's a very,

  645. very powerful text.

  646. In Genesis 3,

  647. Adam and Eve

  648. thought that they were beginning

  649. when they rebelled against God

  650. and they said,

  651. we are going to be like God.

  652. And they thought

  653. they were ushering in

  654. the age of the human

  655. who rules.

  656. But the irony

  657. and the tragedy is

  658. is that what they ushered in

  659. was not the human

  660. who rules,

  661. but the human

  662. who dies.

  663. And the human

  664. who will serve

  665. created things.

  666. We serve our phones.

  667. Many of you do.

  668. Many of you do.

  669. Imagine,

  670. for those of you

  671. who are university students,

  672. I don't know if many professors

  673. do it,

  674. if they said,

  675. before you come into this class,

  676. I'm taking all of your tablets,

  677. phones,

  678. and computers.

  679. Many people,

  680. their anxiety level

  681. would go through the roof

  682. because we serve it.

  683. We serve race.

  684. We serve sex.

  685. We serve ideologies.

  686. And elemental,

  687. those are elemental powers.

  688. There's also elemental spirits.

  689. There are evil spirits

  690. that we willingly serve.

  691. And we are dispossessed.

  692. We might not feel

  693. like we're dispossessed right now,

  694. but you know,

  695. as I get older,

  696. time just slips

  697. through my hands.

  698. And the children

  699. who once were just

  700. so cute and tiny

  701. and I could hold them

  702. and now they're bigger than me.

  703. And they have children

  704. of their own.

  705. And one day I will die

  706. and when I die,

  707. when Bill Gates

  708. and I die

  709. on the same day,

  710. his 89.3 billion,

  711. oops,

  712. nope,

  713. sorry,

  714. 89.4,

  715. oops,

  716. sorry,

  717. 89.5,

  718. no,

  719. oops,

  720. sorry,

  721. 89.6,

  722. oops,

  723. sorry,

  724. 89.7.

  725. Every time I tell the number,

  726. the number's gone up

  727. in that few seconds.

  728. When you're that rich,

  729. that's how it works.

  730. But he and I

  731. will have the same number

  732. of possessions

  733. one second after we die.

  734. For the record,

  735. I'm not close

  736. to 89.3 billion.

  737. I tell people

  738. I'm half a millionaire.

  739. I have the air,

  740. not the million.

  741. And so this,

  742. you know,

  743. it seems very stark,

  744. but that's the stuff

  745. that God works with.

  746. You see,

  747. in one level,

  748. the Bible tells us

  749. our condition

  750. is vastly worse

  751. than we know.

  752. But the text

  753. is just telling us

  754. about how Jesus

  755. willingly,

  756. in a second,

  757. it's going to go

  758. right into it,

  759. how God

  760. willingly

  761. sent his son

  762. to die

  763. for immature,

  764. incompetent,

  765. dispossessed slaves

  766. to elemental powers

  767. and spirits.

  768. He willingly

  769. loved you and me

  770. so much

  771. that he would leave

  772. the glories of heaven

  773. to come and die

  774. for you and me.

  775. That I might be

  776. redeemed from slavery

  777. and I might have

  778. the status

  779. of God's adopted son

  780. who inherits everything.

  781. The gospel both tells us

  782. we are far

  783. more broken

  784. than we realize,

  785. but we are far more loved

  786. than we could ever imagine.

  787. our minds,

  788. even the most

  789. narcissistic

  790. amongst us,

  791. our minds

  792. can't really

  793. grasp

  794. the depth

  795. and the extent

  796. and the purity

  797. of God's love

  798. for us

  799. that we see

  800. as God,

  801. the Son of God,

  802. dies upon

  803. the cross

  804. for you and me.

  805. Just the other day

  806. I was asked by somebody

  807. about why I became

  808. a Christian.

  809. I became a Christian

  810. when I was in grade 12

  811. and he asked a little bit

  812. about the process

  813. that led to me

  814. becoming a Christian

  815. and I said that

  816. I started to go

  817. on a bit of a quest.

  818. I all of a sudden

  819. became,

  820. I had grown up

  821. in a Christian home

  822. and I found

  823. Christianity boring,

  824. I found it irrelevant,

  825. I was far more interested

  826. in the counterculture,

  827. I was far more interested

  828. in countercultural music,

  829. countercultural politics,

  830. countercultural lifestyles,

  831. countercultural dress.

  832. That's what I found

  833. interesting,

  834. that's what I found

  835. as if it would be meaningful

  836. and Christianity

  837. was boring

  838. and it was irrelevant

  839. and I really didn't even

  840. think about whether

  841. or not it was true

  842. and I don't want

  843. to go into it all

  844. but basically

  845. something one day

  846. it was something

  847. that happened to me

  848. while I was on

  849. Elgin Street

  850. here in Ottawa

  851. all of a sudden

  852. made me think

  853. that maybe something

  854. there was something

  855. more to Christianity

  856. and at the end

  857. of the year,

  858. at the end of the year

  859. of a spiritual quest

  860. I became a Christian

  861. and he said to me,

  862. the person who asked

  863. me this question

  864. said,

  865. well why would you

  866. go on a spiritual quest?

  867. What a great question,

  868. eh?

  869. And I,

  870. and this is one

  871. of those times

  872. you know where

  873. somebody must have

  874. been praying for me.

  875. It's really important

  876. church to pray

  877. for each other

  878. because I don't think

  879. I'd ever been asked

  880. that question before

  881. and I paused

  882. and I said to him

  883. because I came

  884. to the conclusion

  885. there must be

  886. something more.

  887. There must be

  888. something more.

  889. And you know

  890. when you hear this talk

  891. and what's going on

  892. here in the

  893. biblical text,

  894. if you,

  895. if you,

  896. if you,

  897. you think you're

  898. a master of the universe,

  899. it feels like you're

  900. a master of the universe,

  901. you have sexual conquests,

  902. you have the money

  903. pouring into the bank

  904. and it's hard for you

  905. to imagine that

  906. there's something more.

  907. The gospel is going

  908. to make very little

  909. sense to you.

  910. But for many people

  911. who have all of those

  912. things,

  913. they realize I can have

  914. all of these things

  915. and there must be

  916. something more.

  917. And for others of us

  918. who are very broken

  919. by elemental powers

  920. or by the elemental

  921. spiritual forces

  922. of the world

  923. and maybe we're

  924. broken by shame

  925. or we're broken

  926. by drug addiction

  927. or we're broken

  928. by abuse

  929. or we're broken

  930. by failure

  931. or we're broken

  932. by poverty,

  933. it maybe is very easy

  934. for us to hope

  935. and believe that maybe

  936. there is something more.

  937. And the Bible says

  938. there is something more.

  939. That's what it talks about.

  940. Listen to how

  941. just after Paul

  942. in verse 3

  943. gives us this

  944. unbelievably bad news.

  945. Remember verse 3,

  946. we'll read it again.

  947. In the same way

  948. we also,

  949. when we were children,

  950. and that's a technical

  951. word in Greek,

  952. meaning one who is

  953. immature,

  954. incompetent,

  955. and dispossessed.

  956. We're enslaved

  957. to the elementary

  958. principles of the world,

  959. but when the fullness

  960. of time had come,

  961. God sent forth his son,

  962. born of a woman,

  963. born under the law,

  964. to redeem those

  965. who are under the law

  966. so that we might receive

  967. adoption as sons.

  968. And when it says here

  969. adoption as sons,

  970. it doesn't mean adoption

  971. as one who will inherit

  972. everything but has to live

  973. under a guardian.

  974. It means that when

  975. I have put my faith

  976. and trust in Jesus,

  977. when you put your faith

  978. and trust in Jesus,

  979. and he takes you,

  980. he doesn't say,

  981. he doesn't,

  982. he just,

  983. when you put your trust

  984. in him,

  985. he takes you.

  986. He takes you.

  987. He takes you.

  988. And when he takes you,

  989. not only are you

  990. redeemed,

  991. but you automatically,

  992. you're not adopted

  993. as a child

  994. who maybe in 50 years

  995. will be old enough

  996. to inherit.

  997. No, the word son there

  998. means right now

  999. you are of maturity

1000. to live and to receive

  1001. the inheritance.

  1002. Could you put up

  1003. the next point,

  1004. Andrew, please?

1005. The gospel is the good news

1006. that when I put my faith

1007. in the person and work

  1008. of Jesus,

  1009. I am redeemed

  1010. from slavery

  1011. and I am adopted

  1012. as God's son

  1013. and heir.

1014. And I could add there,

  1015. ready to inherit.

1016. That's what these two verses say.

  1017. Listen to it again,

  1018. verses 4 and 5.

  1019. But when the fullness

  1020. of time had come,

  1021. God sent forth

  1022. his son,

  1023. born of woman,

  1024. in other words,

  1025. fully human,

  1026. born under the law,

  1027. born into this world

1028. where the moral law exists.

  1029. Why did he come?

  1030. to redeem

  1031. those who are

  1032. under the law

1033. so that we might receive

  1034. adoption as sons.

  1035. And the word redeem

1036. is the word that's used

  1037. to free someone

  1038. from slavery

  1039. at the payment

  1040. of a price,

  1041. at the price

  1042. that was borne

  1043. by God himself

  1044. in the person

  1045. of his son.

  1046. Everyone who puts

  1047. their faith and trust

  1048. in Jesus

  1049. are redeemed

  1050. from slavery

  1051. and adopted

1052. as the sons of God.

  1053. It's very, very, very,

  1054. very powerful news.

  1055. But here's

  1056. a searching question

1057. and I know this is

  1058. a mix-up of an analogy.

  1059. If you could put

  1060. the next point up,

  1061. Andrew, sorry.

  1062. It's a bit of a mix-up

  1063. of analogy.

  1064. Really, my point originally

1065. was just the second half

  1066. but I realized

  1067. the first,

1068. I just sort of felt

1069. I had to add it.

  1070. I know,

1071. am I living like Cinderella

  1072. with amnesia?

  1073. Or am I living

  1074. as if I,

  1075. in other words,

  1076. am I living

  1077. as if I am a slave

  1078. and not the son

  1079. who inherits fully?

  1080. Christian,

  1081. that's the question

  1082. for you and me.

  1083. I know the Cinderella

  1084. analogy breaks down.

  1085. She was, you know,

  1086. but she's,

  1087. you know,

  1088. because she married

  1089. Prince Charming

  1090. and all that

  1091. but I just,

  1092. this idea,

  1093. imagine in that story

  1094. as if Cinderella,

  1095. after she becomes

  1096. the queen,

  1097. went back to living

1098. as if she was the slave

  1099. serving her stepmother

  1100. and her sisters.

  1101. She wasn't living

  1102. like who she was.

1103. And it's easy for us

  1104. to maybe look

  1105. and say,

  1106. how on earth

  1107. could those people

  1108. in South Africa

  1109. misread the Bible?

1110. But what about you and me?

  1111. Is our relationship

  1112. to God,

  1113. is my relationship

  1114. to God

  1115. as if somehow

  1116. God gives me

  1117. these commands

1118. and I need to do them

  1119. and I have a bit

  1120. of anxiety

  1121. and I have a bit

  1122. of a depression

  1123. about the state

  1124. of my life

  1125. as if I'm just a slave

  1126. and it's just drudgery

  1127. and it's just brokenness

  1128. and it's just order

  1129. and it's just rules

  1130. and maybe some days

  1131. I feel like it's,

  1132. like I'm doing

  1133. all those things

  1134. very well

  1135. so I feel very,

  1136. very good.

  1137. I can show myself

  1138. at church

  1139. because,

  1140. you know,

  1141. my marriage

  1142. is going well,

1143. my kids are going well,

1144. my finances are going well

  1145. and,

  1146. you know,

  1147. maybe I'm not reading

  1148. the Bible very often

1149. but nobody can see that

  1150. but things seem

  1151. to be going well

1152. at a very superficial level

1153. and then some of the bottom

  1154. falls out of some

  1155. of these things

  1156. and maybe your marriage

  1157. isn't going as well

  1158. or your romantic relationships

  1159. aren't going as well

  1160. or your finances

  1161. aren't going as well

1162. or your job's in trouble

1163. and all of a sudden

1164. it's not even as if

1165. we want to be around

  1166. other Christians

  1167. and why is that?

  1168. Because,

  1169. you see,

  1170. at our bottom line

  1171. we do not understand

  1172. or not really believe

  1173. that God adopted us

  1174. as his son

  1175. with full rights

  1176. of inheritance

  1177. but I am living

  1178. as if my relationship

  1179. with God

  1180. depends upon my ability

  1181. to fulfill

  1182. his orders to me

  1183. and if I can't fulfill

  1184. his orders to me

  1185. in a satisfactory way

  1186. I am a bad slave.

  1187. I'm a bad slave.

  1188. My church doesn't become

  1189. a mega church

  1190. I am a bad pastor.

  1191. Bill Hybels tells

  1192. a famous joke

1193. go big or go to Canada.

  1194. You know,

1195. and I think it's just so funny

1196. go big or go to Canada.

  1197. You know,

  1198. like if I was a really

  1199. successful pastor

  1200. I'd be snapped up

  1201. by some American church

  1202. and I'd have thousands

  1203. of people coming.

  1204. You know,

  1205. it's,

  1206. that's the question.

  1207. Look,

1208. look at verses 4 and 5 again.

  1209. But when the fullness

  1210. of time had come

  1211. God sent forth

  1212. his son

  1213. born of woman

  1214. born under the law

  1215. to redeem

  1216. those who are

  1217. under the law

1218. so that we might receive

  1219. adoption as sons.

  1220. Could you put

  1221. up the next point

  1222. please,

  1223. Andrew?

  1224. God's adoption

  1225. of me

  1226. as his son

  1227. with all

  1228. of the rights

  1229. and privileges

  1230. of being his son

  1231. is just

  1232. as certain

  1233. as the fact

  1234. that I am

  1235. pardoned

  1236. and redeemed.

  1237. It is just

  1238. as certain.

  1239. It says

  1240. redeemed

  1241. and adopted.

  1242. It doesn't just say

  1243. redeemed.

  1244. In other words,

  1245. I've taken you

  1246. out of slavery

  1247. but George,

  1248. you've taken out

  1249. of slavery

  1250. but now you better

  1251. perform very well

  1252. if I'm going to

  1253. really love you

  1254. because all I've done

  1255. is just taken away

  1256. the bad stuff

1257. but you need to add

1258. good stuff to your life

  1259. so you better

1260. make sure you do this

1261. and you better make sure

  1262. you're successful in that

1263. and you better make sure

1264. you perform well that way

1265. and you better make sure

  1266. this and you better

  1267. make sure that

1268. because all that I've done,

  1269. George,

1270. is I've just taken away

  1271. the bad stuff.

1272. You've got to sort out

  1273. the good stuff yourself

1274. and a lot of times

  1275. that's how we live

  1276. the Christian life

1277. and a lot of times

  1278. that's all the way

1279. that the gospel is presented

  1280. that when Jesus

  1281. died on the cross

1282. he took away your sins

  1283. you're pardoned

  1284. you're delivered from slavery

1285. and it's all just presented

  1286. only and almost exclusively

1287. as if the bad things

  1288. have been taken away

  1289. but the good things

  1290. by implication

  1291. in the soul

  1292. in our soul

1293. that I have to perform those

  1294. but in this text

1295. both are just as certain.

1296. both are just as certain.

  1297. When Jesus took me

  1298. as his own

1299. everything that I had ever done

  1300. that was wrong

1301. from the moment of my conception

1302. to the moment of my death

1303. was dealt with on the cross.

  1304. All of the shame

1305. from the moment of my conception

1306. to the moment of my death

1307. was dealt with on the cross.

  1308. All of the slavery

  1309. that I have experienced

  1310. experience

1311. to how people think about me

  1312. or how this works

  1313. or whatever

  1314. is all taken away

1315. but at the same time

1316. right to the moment of my death

  1317. even though God knows

  1318. my successes and failures

  1319. in the future

  1320. all the way

  1321. my status

1322. is as an adopted son of God

  1323. because of what Jesus

  1324. has done for me

  1325. with the full rights

  1326. I do not get

  1327. a better inheritance

  1328. if I grow a megachurch

  1329. I do not get

  1330. a better inheritance

  1331. if I can memorize

  1332. more Bible verses

1333. I can have more successful

  1334. relations

  1335. I do not

  1336. I can add nothing

1337. to what God has done

1338. for me in the person

  1339. of Jesus.

  1340. Could you put up

  1341. the next point please

  1342. Andrew?

1343. Listen to the text again

  1344. as it goes up

  1345. But when the fullness

  1346. of time had come

1347. God sent forth his son

  1348. born of woman

  1349. born under the law

  1350. to redeem those

1351. who are under the law

1352. so that we might receive

  1353. adoption as sons

  1354. Am I living like

  1355. I am half saved

  1356. only pardoned

  1357. not adopted?

1358. Am I living as if

  1359. I am only pardoned

  1360. not adopted?

  1361. You know

  1362. brothers and sisters

1363. this is one of these

  1364. things that we need

1365. to pray into our lives

  1366. for ourselves

1367. and we need to pray

1368. it into each other's lives

  1369. like if you are

  1370. trying to figure out

1371. how to pray for the church

  1372. one of the things

1373. you can do is just say

  1374. you know

  1375. Lord

  1376. help George

  1377. to understand

  1378. that he is

  1379. God's adopted son

  1380. help the wardens

  1381. help Shirley

  1382. help Daniel and Jonathan

  1383. know that they are

  1384. not just redeemed

1385. but God has adopted them

  1386. as his son

  1387. with the full rights

  1388. of inheritance

1389. and not just the leaders

  1390. but help the people

  1391. who come on Sunday

  1392. when you are trying

  1393. to figure out

1394. how to pray for people

1395. as they come to church

  1396. and you get here

  1397. maybe a bit early

1398. and you have a moment

  1399. to pray

  1400. just pray God

  1401. may you work

  1402. in people's lives

  1403. today

  1404. so that they will

  1405. not only know

  1406. that their sins

  1407. are pardoned

  1408. but they'll also

  1409. know that

  1410. God adopted them

  1411. when they put

  1412. their faith in Jesus

  1413. we need to pray

  1414. that over us

  1415. could you put up

  1416. the next point

  1417. please

  1418. listen again

  1419. to verse 4 and 5

1420. as the point goes up

  1421. but when the fullness

  1422. of time had come

  1423. God sent forth

  1424. his son

  1425. born of woman

  1426. born under the law

  1427. to redeem

  1428. those who were

  1429. under the law

  1430. so that we might

  1431. receive adoption

  1432. as sons

  1433. being God's son

  1434. by adoption

  1435. and grace

  1436. is not a goal

  1437. for a Christian

  1438. but a present

  1439. and eternal

  1440. reality

  1441. it is a present

  1442. and eternal

  1443. reality

  1444. listen if you're

  1445. sitting here right

  1446. now and you're

  1447. thinking you know

  1448. I just came here

  1449. I know because my

  1450. friends dragged me

  1451. my folks dragged me

  1452. my mom's been

  1453. bugging me

  1454. from somewhere else

  1455. and I just thought

  1456. I'd go take a bulletin

1457. take a picture of it

1458. you know get her off

  1459. my back or whatever

1460. and if the Holy Spirit

  1461. is touching you

  1462. in any way

  1463. and if you're thinking

  1464. that's all very good

  1465. for George

  1466. he seems like he's

  1467. a good guy

  1468. or that's already

  1469. that's alright for the

  1470. people around me

  1471. but if God knew

  1472. how bad I was

  1473. if God knew

  1474. how much

  1475. what I had done

  1476. if God knew

  1477. the things going on

  1478. in my heart

  1479. then these things

1480. would not apply to me

1481. but I want to tell you

  1482. right now

  1483. that he does know

1484. and the offer is for you

  1485. he does know

  1486. he knows everything

  1487. about you

  1488. and still his son

  1489. came to die upon

  1490. the cross

  1491. to redeem you

  1492. from slavery

  1493. and make you

  1494. his adopted son

  1495. by grace

  1496. just in closing

  1497. there's a

  1498. there's a

  1499. a great

  1500. the text goes on

1501. in such a great way

  1502. listen

  1503. one final time

  1504. of reading verses

  1505. 4 and 5

1506. and then we'll go to

  1507. verses 6 and 7

  1508. because it's such

  1509. a wonderful promise

  1510. but listen again

  1511. but when the fullness

  1512. of time had come

1513. God sent forth his son

  1514. born of woman

  1515. born under the law

  1516. to redeem those

1517. who were under the law

  1518. so that we might

  1519. receive adoption

  1520. as sons

  1521. and because

  1522. you are sons

  1523. God sent

  1524. the spirit

  1525. of his son

  1526. into our hearts

  1527. crying

  1528. Abba

  1529. father

  1530. so you are

  1531. no longer

  1532. a slave

  1533. but a son

  1534. that's why

  1535. I spent so many

  1536. times on that

  1537. one point

  1538. you are no

  1539. longer a slave

  1540. you are a son

  1541. and if a son

  1542. then an heir

  1543. through God

1544. you put up the point

  1545. Andrew

  1546. this is a

  1547. very precious thing

  1548. it's not just

  1549. that we've been

  1550. redeemed and

  1551. pardoned

  1552. it's not just

  1553. that we've been

  1554. adopted

  1555. but God

  1556. sends the Holy

  1557. Spirit

  1558. when it says

  1559. hearts

  1560. in most of the

  1561. time in the New

  1562. Testament

  1563. when it says

  1564. the word

  1565. heart

  1566. it doesn't

  1567. mean emotions

  1568. you know

  1569. think

  1570. starship

  1571. enterprise

  1572. and Jean-Luc

  1573. Picard

  1574. and he comes

  1575. and he sits

  1576. sorry

  1577. in the chair

  1578. of command

  1579. that's the heart

  1580. the command

  1581. center of your

  1582. lives

  1583. and God

  1584. sends the

  1585. Holy Spirit

  1586. into the

  1587. command center

  1588. of our lives

  1589. and what

  1590. is he

  1591. one of the

  1592. things that he

  1593. does there

  1594. the Bible

  1595. has lots of

  1596. things that says

  1597. about what the

  1598. Holy Spirit

  1599. does but what

  1600. does the Holy

  1601. Spirit do

  1602. while he's

  1603. there

  1604. while he's

  1605. in our

  1606. hearts

  1607. he says

  1608. Abba

  1609. father

  1610. Abba

  1611. father

  1612. he wants

  1613. to train

  1614. me

  1615. and Abba

  1616. is the

  1617. intimate

  1618. word

  1619. that a

  1620. child

  1621. would use

  1622. of his

  1623. or her

  1624. own

  1625. father

  1626. father

  1627. and if

  1628. for you

  1629. maybe you

  1630. had a

  1631. bad dad

  1632. and he

  1633. had to

  1634. call him

  1635. sir

  1636. but in

  1637. your heart

  1638. you know

  1639. what you

  1640. wished you

  1641. had a

  1642. dad like

  1643. and what

  1644. you could

  1645. call your

  1646. dad

  1647. maybe it's

  1648. daddy

  1649. maybe it's

  1650. pops

  1651. maybe it's

  1652. dad

  1653. I don't

  1654. know

  1655. whatever it

  1656. is

  1657. but whatever

  1658. that word

  1659. is

  1660. the Holy

  1661. Spirit

  1662. is in

  1663. you as

  1664. a believer

  1665. saying that

  1666. word

  1667. and training

  1668. and encouraging

  1669. you to call

  1670. that out

  1671. to God

  1672. in intimacy

  1673. to understand

  1674. who you

  1675. are

  1676. intimate

  1677. with God

  1678. please stand

  1679. Andrew the

  1680. final point

  1681. it's from

  1682. an old

  1683. hymn

  1684. you know

  1685. all we

  1686. can say

  1687. is this

  1688. it's used

  1689. at ordination

  1690. but it's

  1691. such a

  1692. brilliant line

  1693. come Holy

  1694. Ghost

  1695. my soul

  1696. inspire

  1697. and light

  1698. and with

  1699. celestial

  1700. fire

  1701. come Holy

  1702. Ghost

  1703. my soul

  1704. inspire

  1705. and light

  1706. and with

  1707. celestial

  1708. fire

  1709. father

  1710. let's

  1711. pray

  1712. let's

  1713. pray

  1714. come Holy

  1715. Ghost

  1716. our souls

  1717. inspire

  1718. and light

  1719. and with

  1720. celestial

  1721. fire

  1722. father

  1723. pour out

  1724. your Holy

  1725. Spirit

  1726. upon us

  1727. for those

  1728. of us

  1729. here

  1730. father

  1731. who are

  1732. Christians

  1733. you know

  1734. how easy

  1735. it is

  1736. to live

  1737. as if

  1738. we have

  1739. amnesia

  1740. and as

  1741. if we

  1742. are

  1743. slaves

  1744. in a

  1745. slave

  1746. relationship

  1747. with you

  1748. a performance

  1749. based

  1750. relationship

  1751. with you

  1752. father

  1753. may you

  1754. bring these

  1755. truths of

  1756. scripture

  1757. home to

  1758. our lives

  1759. deeply

  1760. father

  1761. may your

  1762. Holy Spirit

  1763. move and

  1764. work and

  1765. speak ever

  1766. more loudly

  1767. in the command

  1768. center of our

  1769. lives

  1770. Abba

  1771. father

  1772. teaching us

  1773. and forming

  1774. us to call

  1775. out to you

  1776. as our

  1777. father

  1778. as our

  1779. father

  1780. as our

  1781. dad

  1782. and father

  1783. if there are

  1784. any here

  1785. who have not

  1786. yet given

  1787. their lives

  1788. to Jesus

  1789. may your

  1790. Holy Spirit

  1791. bring them

  1792. to saving

  1793. faith

  1794. help them

  1795. father

  1796. to form

  1797. those words

  1798. to call

  1799. out to

  1800. Jesus

  1801. that he

  1802. will be

  1803. their

  1804. savior

  1805. and lord

  1806. and all

  1807. these things

  1808. we ask

  1809. in the name

  1810. of Jesus

  1811. your son

  1812. and our

  1813. savior

  1814. amen
