  1. Good morning. It's good to see you. I know we've got a team. A whole bunch of people are away today.

  2. Chris and Fiona have taken a team to Taiwan, Franklin and Teresa in Taiwan. So people are

  3. everywhere, but it's good to see you. And what a grand weekend, right? This is definitely the

  4. best weather I've experienced in Hong Kong in the three months we've been here. A beautiful day.

  5. So it's good to see you with us this morning. Now, if you're new, we as a church are going through

  6. this mini-series called Who is This King? And we're going through the Gospels and we're looking at the

  7. life and the impact and the claims that Jesus Christ made. And last week we looked at the chapter

  8. before, John chapter 12, and we looked at how Jesus said this most unusual thing. He spoke about his

    John 12 chapter mention

  9. imminent death as the moment of his glory. And we looked at how Jesus said he's come to

  10. inaugurate a kingdom, but he hasn't done it through a coronation service or by wearing a gold crown.

  11. He's come to do it by bearing a cross. Now this morning we look at another passage of scripture

  12. in which Jesus says some very unusual things. And today we're going to see how Jesus serves his people

  13. by saving them. And how his death on the cross washes them, washes us, not just for all eternity,

  14. but even for today, for right now, for this week as we go into our city. Now this passage that Freya

  15. and Jonathan read to us is a favorite passage for followers of Jesus throughout the centuries.

  16. A passage that talks about humility and Christ-like service. And that's true. But as we look at this

  17. passage, we're going to learn a couple of other things about Jesus. We're going to learn about

  18. Jesus the King. And there's four things in particular I think Christ wants us to see.

  19. We're going to learn about Christ the serving King, or the servant King, Christ the saving King,

  20. Christ the cleansing King, and then fourthly, Christ the commissioning King. Okay? So let's dive in

  21. and Christ the servant King, Jesus the servant King. Now in verse 1, Jesus talks about how he knows

  22. that his hour has come, and he loves his disciples. And then in verse 2, if you look at the first three

  23. words of verse 2, and the first three words of verse 4, it says this, during supper, Jesus got up from

  24. supper. Okay? So Jesus is having this meal with his friends, his disciples, and he gets up. But John

  25. wants to tell us far more than just Jesus got up. He wants to tell us something of there's a showdown of

  26. power that's going on here, right? So let's read verse 2 to 4 completely. It says this, during supper,

  27. when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray Jesus,

  28. Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, that he had come from God,

  29. and that he was going back to God, rose up from supper. Okay? So John is telling us here, verse 2,

  30. that Satan has come and seduced Judas Iscariot. Judas has willingly gone along with that. He wants to

  31. pursue his own glory. And then in verse 3, he tells us that Jesus has come from God the Father. He's

  32. going back to God the Father. And the reason is because Jesus is nothing less than God himself.

  33. Christ left the throne room of heaven and has come to earth, but he's nothing less than God himself.

  34. And so with this imminent showdown of power, what's going to happen? On the one hand, you've got Satan

  35. seducing Judas. You've got Jesus Christ, raw power and status and authority, the God of all creation,

  36. in this showdown of power. And what's going to happen? Well, ordinarily, I'll tell you what I would do

  37. if I was Jesus. I would smite my enemies. I would destroy those that are opposing me, and I would

  38. establish my rule and authority. Right? Am I the only one that would do that? Or is there one or two others?

  39. Perhaps I see that smile on your face, and I know what you're thinking, right? If I were the sovereign

  40. God of the universe, and here is someone that I know is busy calculating how to betray me into my enemies,

  41. I would take them out. But what does Jesus do? What does Jesus do? Well, he gets up from the table,

  42. he undresses, he lays aside his respectable gear. He then does what no respectable man would do.

  43. He gets on his knees, and he washes the feet of his disciples. Now, washing someone's feet is something

  44. that's not very common in our culture, I'm assuming. It's not very common in South African culture,

  45. and I don't think it's very common in Hong Kong culture. But it was something that was very popular

  46. and common in Jesus' day. And if you were a respectable member of society, it was something

  47. that you would have experienced fairly often. It was something that was fairly common. And the reason

  48. is obvious, right? You're walking these long days on dusty roads, hot Middle Eastern climate.

  49. Your feet are getting sweaty and dusty. And at the end of the day, as you go to somebody's house,

  50. someone would be waiting there to wash your feet so that your feet feel clean as you enjoy a meal

  51. with your guests or with your hosts. Now, let me just interject here and say we as a family have

  52. been living in Hong Kong for three months now. Tomorrow will be three months since we left. And for me

  53. personally, it's been probably three of the most exciting, exhilarating, fun-filled months of my

  54. life. I'm absolutely having the time of my life. And there have been a couple of tough days.

  55. There have been a couple of moments where I thought, God, I don't know if I can do this.

  56. But as a whole, I'm having the time of my life. And I think our family, we really feel at home here.

  57. We're really enjoying Hong Kong. It's been amazing.

  58. But there's one thing about Hong Kong which I'm struggling to get used to.

  59. There's one thing that makes me a little bit squirmish. Do you know what it is?

  60. It's not the food. Okay, the food is amazing. It's not the people. People are amazing, right?

  61. It's not the long hours. That I can do with. It's not even the chicken feast that Carlo and Justin

  62. allowed me to order this week without warning me. Okay, even that I can put up with.

  63. Do you know what it is? It's when I walk down the pavement, down the sidewalk, and I get that smell.

  64. That smell that dogs have been there just before me, right? Do you know what I'm talking about?

  65. The smell of dog urine and dog fowl. Has anyone else experienced that?

  66. And sometimes you walk down the pavement and a few minutes later you're thinking,

  67. what is that smell? And you look under your shoe and you know exactly what that smell is, right?

  68. You're looking at me like you've never experienced that. Okay, well I experienced that quite early on

  69. and I'll stay here. Now, think about this, right? What's happening in Jerusalem in John chapter 13?

    John 13 chapter mention

  70. Verse 1 told us, the time for Passover had come. What's happening at Passover?

  71. Hundreds of thousands of animals are being brought to Jerusalem to be sacrificed for the Passover meal,

  72. which is going to happen this very night. So Jesus is having his Passover meal.

  73. Jerusalem is just filled everywhere with animals, mainly sheep, lambs, some cattle, some goats.

  74. Jerusalem is filled with animals, which means Jerusalem is filled with animal fowl, right?

  75. And there aren't cute little signs saying, please clean up after your dogs or, you know,

  76. everyone walking around with a water bottle.

  77. Jerusalem is filled and these people are wearing open sandals.

  78. And so think about it, hot Middle Eastern climate, dusty roads, animal fowl all over the place,

  79. open sandals. How clean do you think your feet are at the end of the day?

  80. Not very clean, right? Don't smell so good.

  81. And so customarily, someone, when they come to your house, what do you do?

  82. Your servant, as an act of service and love, gets a bowl of warm water, a towel wrapped around them,

  83. and they wash your feet.

  84. They wash the dust and the sweat and the grime and the muck off of your feet.

  85. However, this is a job that no Jewish servant would do.

  86. No matter how lowly the servant, no matter how esteemed the master,

  87. this is a job that no Jewish servant was required to do.

  88. Only foreigners would do this. Only Gentiles would wash the feet of their masters.

  89. Remember John the Baptist comes to Jesus, or before Jesus comes, and he says,

  90. after me is coming someone who is so worthy, I wouldn't even be worthy enough to untie his sandals.

  91. What's happening there?

  92. In Jewish culture, you could ask your Jewish servant to do almost anything,

  93. but there are two things they couldn't do.

  94. You couldn't ask them to untie your sandals or to wash your feet.

  95. But here John the Baptist says,

  96. when the Messiah comes, when the King comes,

  97. He is so worthy that if He asked me to wash His feet, to untie His sandals,

  98. I would gladly do it.

  99. But in fact, so unworthy am I of Christ the Messiah,

  100. that I wouldn't even consider myself worthy enough to untie His sandals,

  101. to wash His feet.

  102. So amazingly majestic is this King,

  103. I wouldn't even dare wash His feet.

  104. And friends, this sovereign, amazing, majestic, Messiah King

  105. gets on His knees,

  106. and He washes the feet,

  107. the muck, and the grime,

  108. and the foul,

  109. and the sweat,

  110. and the dust,

  111. off of the feet of His disciples.

  112. Who is this King?

  113. Who is this King that would do such a thing?

  114. You know, one of the astounding things about this passage

  115. is how many people are present with Jesus at this meal?

  116. It's Jesus and His 12 disciples, right?

  117. Now are there 12 of them, or are there 11 of them?

  118. Verse 30, a little bit later on,

  119. tells us that Judas Iscariot is still there.

  120. And later on, Judas gets up to go and consult with the leaders

  121. how to betray Jesus.

  122. But right at this moment,

  123. Jesus Christ, the supremely sovereign God,

  124. the one who holds all power,

  125. the one who the New Testament tells us

  126. will one day destroy His enemies

  127. with a mere breath of His nostrils,

  128. Jesus Christ,

  129. the most supreme act of selflessness,

  130. gets on His knees

  131. and washes the feet of the very man

  132. who right now is calculating

  133. how to betray Jesus

  134. for a few silver coins.

  135. You know, in the Psalms,

  136. there's a Psalm 68,

  137. it says this,

  138. Lord, teach me your ways

  139. that I may walk in your truth.

  140. Oh, friends,

  141. how desperately we need Christ

  142. to teach us His ways.

  143. How desperately we need Christ

  144. to teach us how to swim upstream,

  145. to be the men and women

  146. that are countercultural,

  147. that follow the way of Jesus

  148. in a world which is so fixated

  149. on glory and power

  150. and me and my rank.

  151. Oh, God, teach us your ways.

  152. Teach us your ways.

  153. Jesus Christ,

  154. Jesus Christ,

  155. the servant king.

  156. Secondly,

  157. Jesus,

  158. the saving king.

  159. Now, this idea

  160. that Jesus

  161. is this servant king

  162. is not very new, right?

  163. I think if we were

  164. to really understand it,

  165. it would blow our minds.

  166. But the fact that Jesus

  167. is this selfless,

  168. humble,

  169. servant-hearted king

  170. is something

  171. that's not very new.

  172. It's one of the reasons

  173. why Jesus

  174. is somewhat respected

  175. in culture,

  176. especially in Western culture.

  177. People think of Jesus

  178. as a good moral man.

  179. But there's a problem

  180. with separating Jesus' actions

  181. from His claims,

  182. separating who Jesus was

  183. from what He claimed

  184. to do on the cross.

  185. Because look at what happens

  186. in verse 5 and verse 6.

  187. Verse 5,

  188. Jesus gets this bowl of water

  189. and He starts to wash

  190. His disciples' feet.

  191. And then in verse 6,

  192. Peter says to Him,

  193. Lord,

  194. You shouldn't wash my feet, right?

  195. Peter's like John the Baptist.

  196. He's seen something

  197. of the majesty of Jesus

  198. and He says,

  199. It's not right

  200. that You wash my feet.

  201. And Jesus says to him,

  202. Peter,

  203. you might not understand

  204. what's going on now,

  205. but afterwards,

  206. you'll understand.

  207. Now, after what?

  208. After the meal?

  209. After He's washed their feet?

  210. No,

  211. after I've been crucified.

  212. So Jesus is specifically linking

  213. what He's doing now,

  214. the washing of feet

  215. with what He's about to do

  216. in 24 hours time,

  217. which is be nailed to the cross,

  218. right?

  219. But Peter still doesn't get it.

  220. And so He says,

  221. Jesus,

  222. You will never wash my feet.

  223. And what does Jesus say?

  224. He says,

  225. Peter,

  226. if I do not wash you,

  227. you have no share in me.

  228. You have no part of me.

  229. Friends,

  230. the reason why we can't just

  231. admire Jesus

  232. as a good moral man

  233. or as a good moral teacher

  234. is because Jesus tells us

  235. He never came to be

  236. a good moral teacher.

  237. If you think of Jesus

  238. as just a respectable man

  239. that we can look up to

  240. and learn some good things from,

  241. you don't understand

  242. who Jesus is

  243. and what He came to do.

  244. You see,

  245. what Jesus says to Peter

  246. is actually what He says

  247. to each of us.

  248. He says,

  249. I didn't just come to wash your feet.

  250. I didn't just come to demonstrate

  251. humility or servant-hearted leadership.

  252. What I came to do

  253. is nothing less than

  254. to wash you of your sin

  255. and your self-glory

  256. and the self-awareness

  257. which has marred your life.

  258. I've come to wash you

  259. of the sin that clings to you

  260. even though you try everything

  261. to eradicate it from your life.

  262. The stain which marks

  263. every thought,

  264. every motive,

  265. every ambition,

  266. every word,

  267. every deed that you do.

  268. You see,

  269. in this story,

  270. if you're anything like me,

  271. it's so easy

  272. to look at Judas Iscariot

  273. and think,

  274. there's someone

  275. that needs Jesus, right?

  276. There's someone

  277. who's self-centered,

  278. self-righteous,

  279. living for his own glory.

  280. If there's one person

  281. that really needs

  282. to understand who Jesus is,

  283. there it is.

  284. Cole Truman writes this.

  285. He says,

  286. we must be careful, friends,

  287. at pointing the finger

  288. at them.

  289. In fact,

  290. if we're honest,

  291. most,

  292. if not all of us,

  293. feel the attraction

  294. of self-glory.

  295. And that's not surprising

  296. given that self-glory

  297. is the default position

  298. for fallen human nature.

  299. See, friends,

  300. in a sense,

  301. there's a little bit of Judas

  302. inside all of us,

  303. isn't there?

  304. And Jesus Christ

  305. is trying to teach his disciples

  306. what he's trying to teach us.

  307. He says,

  308. I haven't just come

  309. to give you

  310. a leadership lesson.

  311. I haven't just come

  312. to tell you

  313. to be servant-hearted

  314. and to be humble.

  315. I've come to show you

  316. that the way

  317. I've come to serve you

  318. is to wash

  319. not just your feet,

  320. but to wash your hearts.

  321. I've come to wash

  322. the inner motivation

  323. of your lives.

  324. We sang it earlier.

  325. Jesus has paid it all.

  326. All to him I owe.

  327. Sin had left

  328. a crimson stain.

  329. He washed it

  330. white as snow.

  331. Remember,

  332. Paul,

  333. the Apostle Paul

  334. writes in 2 Corinthians,

  335. and he says this

  336. in chapter 6.

  337. He says,

  338. Don't you realize,

  339. friends,

  340. brothers and sisters,

  341. that our sin

  342. is an affront

  343. to God.

  344. Our unrighteousness

  345. is offensive

  346. to the holiness of God.

  347. Don't you realize

  348. that idolaters

  349. and adulterers

  350. and the sexually promiscuous

  351. and thieves

  352. and the greedy

  353. and drunkards,

  354. such people

  355. have no place

  356. in the kingdom of God.

  357. He says,

  358. if that's the trajectory

  359. of your life,

  360. you haven't met God yet.

  361. And then he says this.

  362. He says,

  363. But such were some of you.

  364. Such was I.

  365. But Christ has washed us.

  366. Christ has sanctified us.

  367. That means cleanse us.

  368. Christ has justified us.

  369. He's given us

  370. his righteousness

  371. in the name

  372. of the Lord Jesus Christ

  373. and the Spirit

  374. of our God.

  375. Peter says this.

  376. Peter,

  377. Jesus says,

  378. Peter,

  379. unless I wash you,

  380. you have no part of me.

  381. Friends,

  382. this is why Jesus

  383. is washing his disciples' feet.

  384. He's showing that

  385. he came to wash them

  386. of their sin

  387. and their unrighteousness.

  388. He came to atone

  389. for the sins

  390. of those who

  391. would believe in him.

  392. This is why Jesus

  393. came to die

  394. for the sins

  395. of the world.

  396. As the prophet Micah

  397. says in Micah chapter 7,

    Micah 7 chapter mention

  398. he came to wash our sins

  399. into the depths

  400. of the ocean.

  401. Friends,

  402. what Jesus says to Peter,

  403. he says to each of us,

  404. unless I wash you,

  405. you have no part of me.

  406. And I think we need

  407. to be careful

  408. about moving on

  409. too quickly.

  410. We ought to examine

  411. ourselves

  412. because as we said earlier,

  413. here in the midst

  414. of this table,

  415. as they stand around

  416. and Jesus washes their feet

  417. is none other than Judas.

  418. And as we said earlier,

  419. there's a little bit

  420. of Judas inside all of us,

  421. right?

  422. But here is Judas.

  423. Judas,

  424. isn't it astonishing

  425. that Judas,

  426. who had walked with Jesus

  427. for three years,

  428. listened to all

  429. of his teachings,

  430. seen the miracles,

  431. Judas,

  432. Judas,

  433. who had handed out

  434. fish and bread

  435. to the 5,000

  436. and then collected

  437. up the scraps afterwards.

  438. Judas,

  439. who had given money

  440. to the poor

  441. and helped serve

  442. those that were struggling.

  443. Judas,

  444. who had walked

  445. in the feet of Jesus

  446. and yet Judas

  447. would not come to Jesus

  448. to be washed by him

  449. and so still carried

  450. his own sin.

  451. Friends,

  452. Jesus makes it abundantly clear.

  453. He didn't come

  454. to be merely a role model.

  455. He didn't come

  456. to initiate

  457. a religious right

  458. or an institution.

  459. He didn't come

  460. not just to say,

  461. hey,

  462. follow me

  463. as a humble,

  464. servant-hearted leader.

  465. He came

  466. as the perfect Lamb

  467. of God,

  468. as the ultimate Passover Lamb

  469. to wash away

  470. the sins

  471. of the world.

  472. Jesus,

  473. our serving,

  474. sanctifying,

  475. saving King.

  476. Third thing is this,

  477. Jesus,

  478. the cleansing King.

  479. Now,

  480. this is very important.

  481. Look at what happens

  482. in verse 10 here.

  483. If you've got your Bible,

  484. look here.

  485. Jesus says to him,

  486. to Peter,

  487. in verse 8,

  488. he says,

  489. if I do not wash you,

  490. you have no share in me.

  491. And Peter then,

  492. in his very,

  493. you know,

  494. exuberant self,

  495. Peter's always the guy

  496. that says these crazy things,

  497. right?

  498. Peter says,

  499. okay,

  500. Lord,

  501. then have all of me.

  502. Wash my hands,

  503. my head,

  504. my feet,

  505. take it all,

  506. right?

  507. Which is a good response.

  508. That's how we should

  509. respond to Jesus.

  510. But then Jesus says

  511. something very interesting.

  512. Look at what he says

  513. in verse 10.

  514. He says,

  515. Peter,

  516. the one who is bathed,

  517. does not need to wash again,

  518. except for his feet.

  519. But he's already

  520. completely clean.

  521. Now,

  522. I want us to think about this

  523. because Jesus is saying

  524. something very important.

  525. Scripture tells us

  526. that sin

  527. is not so much

  528. about our behavior,

  529. you know,

  530. lying,

  531. cheating,

  532. stealing,

  533. et cetera,

  534. et cetera.

  535. Those things are sinful,

  536. but actually the Bible tells us

  537. the root of all those

  538. is far deeper.

  539. It's actually our heart,

  540. right?

  541. It's the motivation

  542. of our hearts.

  543. It's the fact that we live

  544. for our own glory.

  545. It's the fact that we don't

  546. love our maker like we should.

  547. We don't trust our maker

  548. like we should.

  549. And the motivation

  550. of our hearts

  551. is actually the essence

  552. of sin.

  553. And that plays itself out

  554. in a whole lot of behavior.

  555. But what that means

  556. is that

  557. actually,

  558. we probably,

  559. each one of us,

  560. sin many times a day.

  561. And maybe not

  562. an outward behavior,

  563. but the motivation

  564. of our hearts,

  565. many times a day,

  566. we are self-seeking,

  567. self-glorifying,

  568. self-justifying.

  569. Now the question is this,

  570. if we all happen

  571. to sin many times a day,

  572. what do we do

  573. with that sin?

  574. Do we need to be baptized

  575. freshly every time?

  576. Do we need to freshly

  577. come to God

  578. and be born again?

  579. Do we need to be justified

  580. by Jesus

  581. every time we sin?

  582. Otherwise,

  583. you know,

  584. our eternal safety

  585. security is in danger?

  586. Well,

  587. you know,

  588. Martin Luther,

  589. one of the great reformers,

  590. before he discovered

  591. the gospel,

  592. he thought this was the case.

  593. He was a monk

  594. in Germany

  595. at a monastery.

  596. And he had a very acute

  597. sense of conscience.

  598. And so every time

  599. he used to do something wrong,

  600. he thought,

  601. I'm in danger of hell.

  602. And he used to drive

  603. the priests mad

  604. because he would go

  605. to the confession booth

  606. and he would stay there

  607. for hours.

  608. And they would be looking

  609. at their watches thinking,

  610. dinner time's coming.

  611. How long is this guy

  612. going to hold us here?

  613. And he would say,

  614. you know,

  615. Father,

  616. I think I probably

  617. didn't have the right attitude

  618. towards that person.

  619. And he would just spend

  620. there for hours

  621. confessing every tiny

  622. little thing.

  623. And then he would leave

  624. the confession booth.

  625. He'd be walking back

  626. to his room.

  627. He'd think of something.

  628. He'd run back and say,

  629. Father,

  630. Father,

  631. I've forgotten something.

  632. And there's one more thing.

  633. And the monks

  634. used to try and hide from him.

  635. They saw Martin Luther coming.

  636. They would hide out the way

  637. and say,

  638. you know,

  639. don't let him see us.

  640. Otherwise,

  641. he's going to ask

  642. to go to the confession booth again.

  643. And there are even stories

  644. of sometimes

  645. he would wake up

  646. in the middle of the night

  647. and you'd think of something.

  648. And they go,

  649. no,

  650. what happens if I die

  651. between now and the morning?

  652. And you go and wake up

  653. the priest,

  654. Father,

  655. Father,

  656. I've got to confess my sin now.

  657. And you'd wake them up

  658. in the middle of the night.

  659. Well,

  660. friends,

  661. is that what we need to do?

  662. Every time we sin,

  663. we need to quickly make men's

  664. in case our hearts,

  665. our souls are in danger.

  666. Well,

  667. look at what Jesus says here.

  668. He says,

  669. unless I wash you

  670. of your sin

  671. and your self-glory,

  672. you have no part of me.

  673. Peter says,

  674. okay,

  675. then wash all of me.

  676. Quickly,

  677. take it all.

  678. And Jesus says,

  679. don't worry,

  680. Peter,

  681. you are really clean.

  682. The one who's been cleansed,

  683. who's had a bath,

  684. doesn't need to wash himself

  685. again and again

  686. and again.

  687. You are really clean.

  688. Friends,

  689. when you come to Christ

  690. in faith and repentance,

  691. when you come

  692. and you bank your life

  693. on him,

  694. you say,

  695. Jesus,

  696. have all of me.

  697. Jesus doesn't just

  698. wash away your sins

  699. that you are now

  700. morally neutral

  701. until the next time

  702. you sin.

  703. It's not like you've got

  704. a chalkboard

  705. and then he wipes it clean

  706. and the next time you sin,

  707. he writes up

  708. the next sin again.

  709. You know,

  710. the reformers spoke

  711. about this

  712. great exchange.

  713. You give your sin

  714. to Christ

  715. and Christ puts

  716. his righteousness,

  717. his perfect track record

  718. of obedience

  719. onto you

  720. and so when God

  721. sees you,

  722. he sees you

  723. nothing less

  724. as holy and righteous

  725. and perfect in his sight.

  726. It's this dual exchange

  727. that takes place.

  728. We give our sin

  729. to Christ,

  730. Christ gives us

  731. his righteousness.

  732. Jesus makes

  733. a covenant,

  734. an eternal commitment

  735. based on his own character

  736. that we are forever

  737. his beloved,

  738. his sons and daughters.

  739. So think about it

  740. like this.

  741. Claire and I got married

  742. 10 years ago or so

  743. and when we got married

  744. we made a covenant,

  745. an eternal commitment

  746. that as long as we both live,

  747. I'm hers,

  748. I'm hers,

  749. she is mine,

  750. right?

  751. And when we have

  752. a disagreement

  753. or when I'm being

  754. a lousy husband

  755. or I say something silly,

  756. is my marriage in jeopardy?

  757. No,

  758. of course not.

  759. We're together,

  760. our union is intact,

  761. right?

  762. Signed,

  763. sealed,

  764. on the dotted line

  765. for better or for worse,

  766. she's stuck with me,

  767. okay?

  768. No options.

  769. We end this thing together.

  770. But when I'm being an idiot

  771. and when I say silly things

  772. and when I'm self-centered

  773. and when I think about myself,

  774. our marriage is in jeopardy

  775. but is the relationship

  776. as good as it could be?

  777. No,

  778. of course not.

  779. What happens

  780. when I'm being self-centered?

  781. It robs some of the sweetness

  782. out of the relationship.

  783. It erodes some of the joy,

  784. right?

  785. It corrodes some of the grace.

  786. It takes away

  787. some of the gentleness.

  788. It means we get defensive

  789. to each other quickly

  790. until such time

  791. as you utter those

  792. fateful words.

  793. You know what they are?

  794. I'm sorry.

  795. Oscar,

  796. you've had to do that

  797. once or twice,

  798. right?

  799. I'm sorry.

  800. Will you forgive me?

  801. Right?

  802. Now friends,

  803. Jesus is saying

  804. exactly the same thing.

  805. He's saying

  806. when you come to Him,

  807. you are clean.

  808. He's washed you.

  809. Your marriage to Christ

  810. isn't in jeopardy.

  811. He's not going to kick you

  812. out of the kingdom.

  813. You've been born again.

  814. You don't need to be born again,

  815. again and again

  816. and again every day.

  817. He saved you.

  818. What can wash away my sin?

  819. Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

  820. What can make me whole again?

  821. Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

  822. Right?

  823. Remember the Apostle Paul?

  824. He says,

  825. if anyone is in Christ,

  826. he is a new creation.

  827. The old has gone

  828. and the new has come.

  829. Every time we sin,

  830. we don't need to be born again.

  831. But Jesus says,

  832. you do live in a real world

  833. and there is still

  834. a sinful nature inside of you.

  835. And the world in which we live

  836. is still broken.

  837. And the self-glory of the world

  838. and the brokenness of the city

  839. in which we live,

  840. it starts to rub off on us.

  841. And it starts to,

  842. as we walk the streets of our city,

  843. it starts to rub off on our feet.

  844. And we pick up some of the grime

  845. of our city

  846. and some of the foul

  847. and the muck

  848. starts to attach itself to us.

  849. And it corrodes the grace

  850. between us and God.

  851. It affects the sweetness

  852. of our relationship with Jesus.

  853. It starts to erode the joy.

  854. Does it affect our union?

  855. Is God going to kick us

  856. out of his kingdom?

  857. No, of course not.

  858. But it does affect

  859. our communion with him.

  860. Until we come to Jesus

  861. and we say those faithful words,

  862. Father,

  863. I'm so sorry.

  864. Won't you forgive me?

  865. Friends, my guess is that

  866. some of us here today

  867. feel the effects

  868. of the sin in our lives.

  869. And most of us

  870. are probably aware

  871. of the brokenness of our world.

  872. And we may have been washed by Jesus.

  873. We may have been saved.

  874. We may have been born again.

  875. Christ maybe has given you

  876. his righteousness.

  877. But I guess that for many of us now,

  878. we know that we're saved,

  879. but we probably don't feel that clean.

  880. We probably still feel

  881. the guilt of our sin.

  882. I guess there's some of us here

  883. that still feel the shame

  884. of having lived in a broken world

  885. and our sinful nature

  886. is still inside of us.

  887. Jesus says there's a day coming

  888. you'll be in heaven

  889. where every sin will be wiped away.

  890. Every tear will be wiped off your face.

  891. There'll be no more sin,

  892. no more wickedness,

  893. nothing wrong.

  894. But until that day,

  895. you live in a broken world.

  896. Friends,

  897. Christ our King

  898. comes to us

  899. and he says,

  900. if you've come to me

  901. in faith and repentance,

  902. if you've banked your life in me,

  903. you're clean.

  904. I've washed you.

  905. You are forgiven.

  906. But then he says,

  907. come to me afresh today.

  908. Let me come and wash

  909. the muck

  910. and the grime

  911. and the sin

  912. and the dust

  913. and the sweat

  914. from off your feet.

  915. Come and let me wash you.

  916. Let me apply

  917. the blood of Jesus

  918. to your life today.

  919. Friends,

  920. if you're a follower of Jesus,

  921. I hope you have

  922. a sharp conscience.

  923. I hope that you feel

  924. acutely

  925. sin

  926. and the pangs of sin

  927. whenever we do sin.

  928. But friends,

  929. don't let that

  930. stop you coming to Jesus.

  931. Come to Jesus

  932. freshly today.

  933. Come and let him wash you.

  934. Come and let him

  935. set you free.

  936. Come and let the blood

  937. of Christ

  938. cleanse your conscience

  939. from a guilty conscience

  940. and let him restore

  941. the sweetness

  942. and the joy

  943. of your relationship.

  944. Psalm 32

  945. is the great psalm

  946. of confession

  947. and in it,

  948. David writes

  949. and he says this.

  950. He says,

  951. when I kept silent

  952. about my sin,

  953. my bones wasted away

  954. even though I groaned

  955. all day long.

  956. He says,

  957. my strength dried up

  958. as the heat of summer

  959. and I was no longer,

  960. he says,

  961. until such time

  962. as I acknowledged

  963. my sin to you.

  964. I no longer covered

  965. my iniquity.

  966. You've become

  967. a hiding place for me.

  968. You preserve my soul

  969. from trouble.

  970. Friends,

  971. Jesus Christ calls us

  972. to live a lifestyle

  973. of confession

  974. and repentance.

  975. to live a life

  976. where day in

  977. and day out

  978. we come before

  979. his throne of grace

  980. and say,

  981. Father,

  982. forgive me.

  983. Father,

  984. come and wash me.

  985. Jesus,

  986. I acknowledge

  987. my shortcomings.

  988. Truly,

  989. we come and admit

  990. our sin.

  991. And friends,

  992. this is something

  993. that the modern church

  994. doesn't do very well.

  995. We don't like

  996. to admit our sin

  997. but Jesus says,

  998. come to the throne room

  999. of grace

1000. and there you will find

  1001. healing

1002. that you so desperately need.

  1003. Friends,

1004. may we come to Jesus

1005. day in and day out.

  1006. Come confess our sin

  1007. and find the healing

  1008. that we need.

  1009. Fourth thing,

  1010. finally,

  1011. Jesus,

  1012. the commissioning king.

  1013. Now this is short.

1014. Now look at what happens

  1015. in verse 12

  1016. of John chapter 13.

    John 13 chapter mention

1017. Let me just go there.

  1018. Verse 12,

  1019. Jesus says this.

  1020. It says,

  1021. when he had washed

  1022. their feet

  1023. and put on his

  1024. outer garments,

  1025. he resumed his place

1026. and he said to them,

  1027. do you not understand

  1028. or do you understand

1029. what I've done to you?

  1030. You call me teacher

  1031. and Lord

  1032. and you are right

  1033. for so I am.

  1034. If then I,

  1035. your Lord and teacher,

  1036. have washed your feet,

1037. you also ought to wash

  1038. one another's feet.

  1039. For I've given you

  1040. an example

  1041. that you should do

  1042. just as I've done

  1043. to you.

  1044. So Jesus now

  1045. commissions his disciples.

  1046. He says,

1047. go and do what I've done.

  1048. Now is Jesus saying,

  1049. you disciples

1050. need to go and die

  1051. on the cross

  1052. for one another?

1053. Do you need to save

  1054. one another?

  1055. No,

  1056. of course not.

  1057. There's only one

  1058. saving king,

  1059. right?

  1060. There's only one

  1061. perfect sinless man.

  1062. There's only one

  1063. God man.

  1064. His name is Jesus.

  1065. Jesus did for us

  1066. what we could not

  1067. do for ourselves.

1068. But Christ does call us

  1069. as his followers

  1070. to go and wash

  1071. each other's feet,

  1072. to serve each other

  1073. by washing one another

  1074. with the gospel.

  1075. In Hebrews chapter 3,

    Hebrews 3 chapter mention

1076. there is one of the

  1077. most important verses

  1078. in the Bible

  1079. for anyone that is

1080. part of a local church.

  1081. Okay?

  1082. It says this.

  1083. It says,

  1084. take care,

  1085. brothers and sisters,

  1086. lest there be

  1087. in any of you

  1088. an evil,

  1089. unbelieving heart,

  1090. a hard heart,

  1091. which leads you

  1092. to fall away

  1093. from the living God.

  1094. So he says,

  1095. in a church family

  1096. like ours,

  1097. Watermark,

  1098. hey,

  1099. some of us,

  1100. the brokenness

  1101. of the world,

1102. the sin of our lives,

  1103. it causes our hearts

  1104. to get hard

  1105. before God.

  1106. And that causes us,

  1107. if we're not careful,

1108. to fall away from God,

1109. to get hard towards Him

1110. and to slowly drift away.

  1111. So he says,

  1112. be careful of that.

  1113. Then he says this,

1114. and I'll put it up there.

  1115. Therefore,

  1116. encourage one another

  1117. every day,

1118. as long as the day

  1119. is called today,

  1120. right,

  1121. which is every day,

1122. as long as it's called today,

  1123. encourage one another

1124. so that none of you

  1125. become hardened

  1126. by the deceitfulness

  1127. of sin.

  1128. Watermark,

  1129. I want to issue

  1130. this challenge to you.

1131. If this is your church,

  1132. if you consider

  1133. Watermark your home,

  1134. I want to issue

  1135. you this challenge.

1136. Can you make it your goal

  1137. that every single day

1138. as long as the day

  1139. is called today

  1140. to find one person

  1141. in the church

  1142. that you can

1143. send a text message to,

1144. give them a phone call,

  1145. write them an email,

  1146. write them a note,

  1147. somehow find somebody

1148. that you can wash their feet

  1149. with the gospel

  1150. of God's grace.

  1151. Find one person

1152. that you can wash them

  1153. with the word

  1154. of God's grace

  1155. and encourage them

  1156. and help them

  1157. to fix their eyes

  1158. on Jesus

  1159. and to lay aside

  1160. every sin

1161. so that they can run

  1162. with endurance

1163. the race that is set

  1164. before them.

  1165. Friends,

  1166. Jesus looks at each

1167. one of us in the eye

  1168. and he says,

  1169. I've washed you

  1170. white as snow

  1171. but not only that,

1172. I've come to wash you today.

1173. I've come to remind you

  1174. of my grace

  1175. and my gospel.

1176. I've come to remind you

1177. of the good news of Jesus

1178. to wash your feet today.

  1179. He says,

  1180. what you've seen

  1181. I've done for you

1182. now do for one another.

  1183. If I then,

  1184. your Lord and teacher,

  1185. have washed your feet,

  1186. so you also

  1187. ought to wash

  1188. one another.

  1189. Watermark,

1190. I want to call us this.

  1191. Can we love,

  1192. whoa,

  1193. sorry.

  1194. Can you love,

  1195. really love,

  1196. can we love Christ

  1197. our servant king?

  1198. Can we worship

  1199. and honor Christ

  1200. our saving king?

  1201. Can we revel

  1202. in the wonder

  1203. of Jesus

  1204. our cleansing king?

  1205. and can we obey

  1206. Christ our commissioning king?

  1207. Let's do that together.

  1208. Let's pray together.

  1209. Heavenly Father,

  1210. Lord,

1211. when we look at this passage,

  1212. we revel

  1213. and we marvel

  1214. at the wonder

  1215. of who you are.

  1216. God,

  1217. thank you

  1218. that you didn't remain

  1219. in heaven.

  1220. Thank you

1221. that you didn't leave us

  1222. to our own devices.

  1223. thank you,

  1224. Jesus,

1225. for not just sending us

  1226. the prophets

  1227. or your scriptures,

  1228. but you,

  1229. God himself,

  1230. came to earth

  1231. to wash us,

  1232. God,

  1233. not just of

1234. the dirt of our world,

  1235. but the dirt

  1236. of our hearts,

  1237. God.

1238. You came to wash us clean.

  1239. Jesus,

  1240. we celebrate you.

  1241. We revel in you.

1242. We are in awe of you.

  1243. We worship you.

  1244. We thank you.

  1245. Jesus,

  1246. thank you

1247. that you set us free.

  1248. And Jesus,

  1249. thank you

1250. that you still wash us.

  1251. Every Sunday

1252. as we come to church

1253. and we sing the gospel

  1254. and we demonstrate

  1255. the gospel in communion,

  1256. you wash us afresh.

  1257. Thank you,

  1258. Jesus,

  1259. that every morning

1260. when we come to your word

  1261. and devotions,

  1262. you wash us

  1263. with the gospel.

  1264. Thank you,

  1265. Jesus,

  1266. that as we gather

  1267. in CGs together,

  1268. you wash us

  1269. with the gospel.

  1270. God,

  1271. we're so grateful

  1272. for you.

  1273. Thank you,

  1274. God,

  1275. for not only being

  1276. the most magnificent

  1277. role model

  1278. and example

1279. of a humble servant king,

1280. you also are saving king.

  1281. You are cleansing king.

  1282. Jesus,

  1283. as a church,

1284. we want to obey you.

1285. We want to follow you

1286. and we want to wash

  1287. one another

  1288. with the gospel.

  1289. Help us,

  1290. I pray.

  1291. God,

1292. I pray for Watermark Church.

  1293. Won't you make us

  1294. a family

  1295. and a community

  1296. that washes

  1297. one another

1298. with the word of grace,

  1299. with the good news

  1300. of the gospel.

  1301. people.

  1302. We ask you this

  1303. in your name.

  1304. Amen.
