  1. Father, sometimes it worries us to think that you are unchanging, that you just don't change.

  2. But Father, help us to understand this mystery of who you are.

  3. And Father, we get a glimpse of it with this idea that you are unchangingly faithful.

  4. That when you accept us as your son or daughter in Jesus, by faith in Jesus, that you never let us go.

  5. Nothing can stop you from letting us go.

  6. We thank you, Father, that you are a great God, that you are faithful, that you desire to know us and have us know you.

  7. And so, Father, bring your word home and bring this truth home to us this morning.

  8. And we ask this in the name of Jesus, your son and our savior. Amen.

  9. Please be seated.

  10. So, one of the challenges in courtship and in marriage is you meet somebody and, you know, you become interested in them.

  11. And then you start to get to know them.

  12. And that's the challenge.

  13. Because as you get to know them, you start to realize there's things about them which you hadn't quite realized before.

  14. And sometimes you find that endearing and wonderful.

  15. Sometimes you find it shocking and upsetting.

  16. And sometimes you just find it a little bit irksome.

  17. And part of the whole process of developing a relationship is how you manage those things.

  18. As you know, some of you maybe have dated somebody or you started to become friends with somebody.

  19. It doesn't have to be romantic.

  20. And then after a while you realize, no, I don't really think this is going to work.

  21. I don't really think we can be friends.

  22. This particular habit or this particular aspect of their personality, I just can't quite manage it.

  23. People are angular, if you know what I mean.

  24. In fact, it's one of the differences between imaginary friends and real friends.

  25. Imaginary friends, I don't know, they always laugh at your jokes.

  26. They always just go along with what you want.

  27. Real friends don't always laugh at your jokes.

  28. And sometimes they can be very irritating.

  29. You know, one of the marks of the fact that God is a real God and not just an imaginary God,

  30. a make-believe God, is that we Christians believe that the true God that does exist has spoken to reveal himself.

  31. And he's revealed himself to us through his word.

  32. And so what that means is that when we read his word, because he's not a make-believe God, an imaginary God,

  33. there's times when we read his word and we go, ooh, really?

  34. Really?

  35. You say that?

  36. And we cringe.

  37. Now, you might think I'm being a little bit extreme.

  38. And if you're a guest here, you're thinking, gosh, I know I shouldn't have come to an Anglican church saying such mean things about God.

  39. That would never happen to me.

  40. I'd like you to take your Bibles and turn to Galatians chapter 4.

    Galatians 4 chapter mention

  41. And we're going to read verses 8 and 9.

  42. And if you don't think that, imagine that you are going to, on Monday, tomorrow,

  43. you're going to gather all of your co-workers together, and you're going to read this verse to them slowly,

  44. these two verses slowly, all your co-workers.

  45. The atheist, the agnostic, the spiritual person, the Muslim, the Buddhist, you're going to read this to them.

  46. Galatians chapter 4, verses 8 and 9.

    Galatians 4:8

  47. 1.

  48. Formerly, friends, when you did not know God, whoa, just don't go any further.

  49. When you did not know God.

  50. You're saying, the Muslim says, you're saying I don't know God?

  51. The Buddhist says, you're saying I don't know God?

  52. The spiritual person, you're saying I don't know God?

  53. Formerly, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to those that by nature are not gods.

  54. But now that you have come to know God, that's he's talking to Christians.

  55. Or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless elementary principles of the world

  56. whose slaves you want to be once more?

  57. Now, depending on your personality type, some of you might be saying, I'd love to read that text to my co-workers.

  58. My boss.

  59. My boss's boss.

  60. And others would be saying, well, George, maybe you have a little bit of a point about sometimes there's things in the Bible

  61. that just sort of make us get a little tiny bit uncomfortable.

  62. Because for many of us, this would be a very, very, very awkward text to read.

  63. In fact, you know, some of the times I say, well, if you know, if you actually know the original language or something like that,

  64. it, you know, it says this or that, it softens this or makes it.

  65. Actually, that doesn't happen here.

  66. In fact, actually, even to make it more blunt, it actually literally says, when it says in verse 8, in my version of the Bible, it says formerly.

  67. Literally, it says, however, then.

  68. And however, then in the original language is emphatic.

  69. In other words, if we were to try to be translating it more literally, it would just look tacky.

  70. But you would bold it and make it all capitals because it's supposed to jump out of the page.

  71. However, then, when you did not know God, and then you'll notice in verse 9, but now, and it's a direct contrast.

  72. So, in fact, actually, the text is making a very, very, some very, very stark claims.

  73. We're going to camp here for a second just to get our minds around it because you never know when somebody's going to ask you about stuff like this.

  74. So, if you could put up the first point, Andrew, that would be very helpful.

  75. And here's the claim that the text is making.

  76. The true God exists and there are no gods.

  77. The true God exists and there are no gods.

  78. And some of you might say, well, George, how does that fit in?

  79. I mean, Paul wouldn't have known about Hinduism and he wouldn't have known about Buddhism

  80. and he wouldn't have known about Islam amongst three things.

  81. How would that have worked?

  82. Well, just sort of one tiny little thing.

  83. He probably actually did know a little bit about Hinduism because the church that was sort of the sending church for Paul was Antioch

  84. and there's archaeological evidence that there was some contact.

  85. There might even have been people of what we now call India in the congregation.

  86. So, actually, he might very well have known a little bit about Hinduism and Buddhism.

  87. But the fact of the matter is, is that the ideas of Hinduism and Buddhism,

  88. either that all is God or that everything isn't God but the God is sort of in everything,

  89. those actually were already Greek philosophers that thought about that.

  90. So, Paul was familiar with it.

  91. And Islam, of course, didn't develop for almost 700 years afterwards, so he wouldn't have known that.

  92. But it would have some similarities to a type of radical Judaism, so he would have been familiar with that.

  93. So, in fact, and here's where things get very uncomfortable.

  94. And if you're guessed, you're going to be maybe a little bit shocked.

  95. And hopefully, as we talk it through, you still might be very shocked,

  96. but at least you'll maybe understand why we would say such a shocking thing.

  97. The fact of the matter is, is that even in the presence of a billion Hindus and a billion Muslims,

  98. this text would say that Allah is not a God.

  99. And the Hindu gods are not gods.

  100. They're not by nature.

  101. They're not real.

  102. That's what the text is saying.

  103. The true God exists, and there are no gods.

  104. Some of us might be thinking, that's really, really a very, very, very big claim.

  105. And it might be all right, George, for us to talk about this right now,

  106. when we're all sort of together.

  107. But I'm also a little bit confused, George, because aren't a lot of people of other faiths,

  108. and even those who have no faith at all, they don't believe in any God whatsoever,

  109. aren't a lot of them a lot better than Christians?

  110. And the answer would be, yes, they are.

  111. But Christianity doesn't make any claim about people being better.

  112. Read the text again.

  113. And this is the problematic thing, because, George, you know, you're saying that they're enslaved.

  114. But surely, don't you think they live better lives?

  115. Like, some of you might even be thinking of, I don't know, a Christian,

  116. and maybe an atheist, and you'd say to yourself,

  117. George, I'd rather have the atheist as my boss, because they're a better person.

  118. So, I don't know how they're enslaved.

  119. Well, let's listen to the text again.

  120. Formerly, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to those that by nature are not gods.

  121. But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God,

  122. how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless elementary principles of the world,

  123. whose slaves you want to be once more?

  124. The text is very clear, making a big claim.

  125. If you could put up the next point, that would be great.

  126. Here's a way to start to understand it.

  127. We will always be enslaved by what we worship,

  128. unless we worship what we were created to worship.

  129. You know, it's interesting.

  130. As I was writing this, I had in the back of my mind a regular conversation partner that I have,

  131. who's always trying to embarrass me in public.

  132. And, but occasionally he gives me, I mean, it's sort of odd.

  133. I mean, one week he can try to embarrass me in public by saying something in a really loud voice about,

  134. so you worship a God who likes to kill people and cause people to holy war.

  135. The whole restaurant, all of Starbucks goes quiet, you know.

  136. And then the next week he'll say something sort of positive to me.

  137. But, you know, in a sense, he would agree with that, up until the comma, he would agree,

  138. we will always be enslaved by what we worship.

  139. In fact, he'd probably say to me, George, if you just stop there, you hit it right,

  140. they hit the nail on the head.

  141. You hit a home run.

  142. You hit a home run.

  143. We will always be enslaved by what we worship.

  144. In fact, not just my friend who's an atheist.

  145. Many, many people who wouldn't necessarily call themselves atheists or agnostics,

  146. they just say, you know, all religion, you know, it just enslaves you.

  147. You know, like, why waste your time on Sunday morning going to a church, paying money?

  148. Like, why don't you just sleep in, go to a nice restaurant for brunch,

  149. and then just hang out all afternoon and watch some football games and drink a few brews?

  150. Like, why bother yourself with anything big or mighty like that?

  151. You know, it just enslaves you.

  152. It just bends your life out of shape.

  153. Just bends your life out of shape to serve this.

  154. And Christians, you see, this is a, I think it's a very Christian statement.

  155. We will always be enslaved by what we worship unless we worship what we were created to worship.

  156. You see, at the very heart of the Christian faith is not just that the Christian faith is just like

  157. what gives us a little bit of meaning in our life.

  158. It makes us happy, gives us a sense of purpose.

  159. And, you know, when we talk like that amongst our non-Christian friends,

  160. they might think it's weird because they might think, you know,

  161. like, why don't you get your meaning and all, I don't know,

  162. like just from being centered, doing a little bit of yoga,

  163. I don't know, volunteering occasionally or, you know, whatever.

  164. It seems a bit odd and it leaves you to take odd positions on things like abortion.

  165. But, you know, at the end of the day, if we say,

  166. well, it just gives me some peace, it gives me some purpose.

  167. And they say, well, you know, for some it's rock climbing, you know,

  168. for some it's yoga, you know, for him it's church.

  169. You know, for me it's a few beers, watching football all afternoon.

  170. Like, whatever, you know, cranks, you know, whatever turns your crank,

  171. like, that's all we say.

  172. But Christians actually make a very, very, very deep claim.

  173. We make a claim that we are creatures in a created order,

  174. that there is a God who does exist,

  175. and that God who does exist chose to create out of nothing.

  176. And when he made human beings,

  177. he made us to be in his image and likeness.

  178. And he made us to know him and to be known by him

  179. and to have fellowship, communication, community with him.

  180. That's how he made us.

  181. He made us to look out to him,

  182. to love him, to be grateful to him,

  183. just to rejoice in who he is,

  184. just as in a sense, you know,

  185. if you have a really, really great friend

  186. and you just sort of rejoice in who they are and your friendship.

  187. Like, you know, not all,

  188. but you just have this sense of joy,

  189. of having a really good friend

  190. or, you know, somebody really important in your life like that.

  191. And in a very real way, but to the nth degree,

  192. because God is eternal, that for all eternity,

  193. just sort of rejoice in God.

  194. And God made us to sense,

  195. to get our meaning in relationship to him,

  196. to get our direction in relationship with him,

  197. to have our sense of worth in connection to him

  198. and to get our satisfaction in connection with him.

  199. God made us to be the type of creature

  200. that always looks out or goes out

  201. to have meaning and hope and purpose

  202. and satisfaction and direction.

  203. And when, in Genesis 3,

  204. we raised our fist at God

  205. and said that we want to be equal with you at least,

  206. and we turned our back on God,

  207. when we did that,

  208. it didn't mean that we stopped being human.

  209. It meant that our backs are turned to God,

  210. that we become far from God,

  211. that we become lost, in a sense,

  212. in our own imaginings apart from God.

  213. But that part of us,

  214. that we were made to look for somebody

  215. or somewhere or something

  216. or some idea or some principle

  217. that will give some meaning to our life,

  218. some purpose to our life,

  219. some direction to our life,

  220. some shape to our life,

  221. some grounding to our life,

  222. that part of us that continues to look out,

  223. continues to look out.

  224. It doesn't go away,

  225. but what it means is that we will now look everywhere other than God.

  226. To have meaning,

  227. to have a sense of purpose,

  228. to have a sense of direction,

  229. to have a sense of being grounded,

  230. to have some type of satisfaction,

  231. of hope,

  232. that will have to be now somewhere other than God.

  233. And if you think about it for a second,

  234. if we were designed in such a way

  235. that we would find that in God,

  236. and now we go somewhere else other than God,

  237. that's actually being bent out of shape.

  238. And the fact of the matter is,

  239. is that much of what we give ourselves to

  240. and find our meaning in

  241. is even less than human.

  242. Friends,

  243. every single person you meet today,

  244. it doesn't matter if you go for a walk down Rideau Street

  245. and you meet the most broken down street person

  246. that you've ever seen,

  247. or if by chance you're walking down the street

  248. and you get a glimpse of a billionaire

  249. or you get a glimpse of the prime minister,

  250. every single human being

  251. will last longer than Canada,

  252. will last longer than the United States.

  253. Canada will come to an end.

  254. The United States will come to an end,

  255. unless Jesus comes first.

  256. But human beings survive death.

  257. Canada is not made in the image of God.

  258. Every human being is made in the image of God.

  259. The person will last longer than the nation,

  260. the ideology.

  261. And that doesn't even count the fact

  262. that so many of us,

  263. what we do to find meaning in our life,

  264. even, you know,

  265. we find meaning in our life from having gadgets,

  266. but they're all less than us.

  267. Like, why is it that we find meaning

  268. for something that we make,

  269. which is less than us?

  270. I talk in my blog about,

  271. if you look at it this week,

  272. about, you know,

  273. whether Hinduism and all

  274. and the Buddhist type of idea,

  275. you know,

  276. and that in the Bible.

  277. And at the heart of it is

  278. all of these ideas

  279. see ultimate reality

  280. as fundamentally impersonal.

  281. But in our day-to-day lives,

  282. if something is making

  283. more and more impersonal,

  284. if we serve impersonal things,

  285. that makes us less, not more.

  286. And whether it's ideas

  287. like Marxism or capitalism

  288. or whatever,

  289. if that becomes what drives us

  290. and what motivates us,

  291. we're giving ourselves

  292. to something that's less to us.

  293. And if we're giving ourselves

  294. to that which is less than that,

  295. us,

  296. how can it not bend us

  297. out of shape?

  298. You see that the Bible here,

  299. which is on one hand

  300. talking about something

  301. which is very, very, very,

  302. very, very, very counterculture.

  303. Let me tell you,

  304. the counterculture in Canada

  305. is not countercultural.

  306. Galatians 4, 8 and 9

  307. is profoundly countercultural,

  308. which is why we would feel

  309. so profoundly awkward

  310. about talking about it

  311. with our boss

  312. and our boss's boss

  313. and our co-workers.

  314. But when you think about it,

  315. there's profound wisdom.

  316. We might be uncomfortable about it,

  317. but there is profound wisdom.

  318. If you could put up

  319. the next point,

  320. the not-by-nature gods

  321. enslave people,

  322. the true God,

  323. died a slave's death

  324. to redeem

  325. and free us

  326. from slavery

  327. to not-by-nature gods.

  328. You see,

  329. what the Bible is saying here

  330. is, like you might wonder,

  331. is the Bible saying that

  332. there's not other gods?

  333. Like, that's a bit

  334. of a more complicated thing.

  335. The Bible sort of says

  336. that they're not by nature gods.

  337. In other words,

  338. on one level,

  339. they don't exist as gods.

  340. But even this word

  341. elementary principles,

  342. there's three different ways

  343. that can be translated in English,

  344. all of them valid.

  345. Elementary principles

  346. and elementary powers

  347. or elementary spirits.

  348. If you look at Bible translations,

  349. all three of them

  350. will be present.

  351. And the idea

  352. in the original language

  353. encompasses all three.

  354. And, you know,

  355. sometimes if you think about it,

  356. what we give ourselves

  357. to are principles,

  358. ideas, capitalism,

  359. Marxism,

  360. queer theory,

  361. like gender,

  362. we give ourselves

  363. to principles,

  364. our ideas.

  365. We also give ourselves

  366. to fundamental forces.

  367. We give ourselves

  368. to sex

  369. or our tribe

  370. or we give ourselves

  371. to power.

  372. We give ourselves

  373. to fundamental

  374. sort of powers

  375. in the world.

  376. And the Bible also says

  377. that sometimes

  378. those things

  379. which are worshipped

  380. as idols or gods

  381. are in fact demons.

  382. That they're in fact

  383. they're demons.

  384. and in all of these cases

  385. if we give ourselves

  386. to them

  387. and they're not

  388. the real God

  389. and we were made

  390. to worship

  391. and to know

  392. the real God

  393. to find our meaning,

  394. our hope,

  395. our satisfaction,

  396. our grounding,

  397. everything in the real God

  398. who truly exists,

  399. who creates all things

  400. and sustains all things.

  401. He's not a God

  402. who made all things

  403. and then went away.

  404. He's a God

  405. who made all things

  406. and then sustains everything.

  407. Every second of existence

  408. is sustained

  409. in existence by God

  410. not by itself

  411. but by God

  412. and we were made

  413. to know that God

  414. and to worship that God

  415. and if we go

  416. either towards principles

  417. or powers

  418. or spirits

  419. we are bending ourselves

  420. and this idea

  421. that is now

  422. sort of being revealed to us

  423. and is very profoundly

  424. uncomfortable

  425. to us as Canadians

  426. this is not

  427. it's so funny

  428. that the way

  429. we automatically

  430. try to think of God

  431. is that when we think of God

  432. we think of him

  433. like an elemental power

  434. or an elemental principle.

  435. We think of him

  436. as an abstraction

  437. which is what a principle is

  438. or we think of him

  439. as connected to a power

  440. whether it's the power

  441. that race holds

  442. or the power

  443. that money holds

  444. or the power

  445. that just our desire

  446. for power holds

  447. or we think of God

  448. in terms of almost

  449. really ways

  450. that would be

  451. the best way

  452. to think of demons

  453. as that God

  454. is going to be a God

  455. who just wants to

  456. control us

  457. he just wants to

  458. enslave us

  459. he wants to demean us

  460. and we automatically

  461. in our fallen state

  462. tend to project upon God

  463. these categories

  464. because that's what

  465. we're looking for

  466. in the time

  467. all in the world

  468. all in the world

  469. all in the world

  470. and so when we hear

  471. this thing about

  472. the true God

  473. we automatically

  474. start to try to

  475. think of him

  476. in terms

  477. of these categories

  478. but they're not

  479. by nature

  480. God's enslaved people

  481. but when we think

  482. of God

  483. how is it that

  484. God has fundamentally

  485. vindicated his word

  486. and justified his word

  487. and revealed who he is

  488. he does it

  489. through the cross

  490. about a year ago

  491. I was having a conversation

  492. in a Starbucks

  493. of all places

  494. and I

  495. and the person

  496. was going on and on

  497. about how

  498. you know

  499. God kills people

  500. and it's just

  501. it's going to hurt

  502. like she

  503. she was going on

  504. and the other people

  505. were all listening in

  506. but this one person

  507. was taking the lead

  508. and talking about

  509. how God relates

  510. to people

  511. and I

  512. had one of those

  513. Holy Spirit moments

  514. somebody must have been

  515. praying for me

  516. keep praying for me

  517. when I said

  518. you know the God

  519. that you believe in

  520. kills people

  521. puts people

  522. to death

  523. but the God

  524. that I believe

  525. in the real God

  526. doesn't put people

  527. to death

  528. but dies for people

  529. and all the person

  530. could do

  531. because they had

  532. intellectual integrity

  533. was say

  534. I never thought of that

  535. and then I had

  536. a very brief

  537. one minute

  538. explanation

  539. about how

  540. Christians believe

  541. that God

  542. the Son of God

  543. I didn't quite

  544. use these words

  545. I was more articulate

  546. and hopefully more

  547. at their level

  548. but I just said

  549. the very center

  550. we believe that

  551. God's Son

  552. took on human flesh

  553. and died on the cross

  554. to free you

  555. the not by nature

  556. God's enslaved people

  557. the true God

  558. died a slave's death

  559. because that's what

  560. the crucifixion is

  561. a slave's death

  562. why

  563. did Jesus come

  564. why did he

  565. become

  566. like a slave

  567. a servant

  568. and die

  569. a slave

  570. or servant's death

  571. he did it

  572. to redeem

  573. and free us

  574. from slavery

  575. to not by nature

  576. gods

  577. that's what Jesus did

  578. you know it's

  579. very interesting

  580. I learned

  581. this week

  582. at synod

  583. one of the speakers

  584. was comparing

  585. the final words

  586. of Jesus

  587. before his death

  588. and the final words

  589. of Buddha

  590. before his death

  591. the final words

  592. of Buddha

  593. before his death

  594. was

  595. strive without ceasing

  596. the final words

  597. of Jesus

  598. before he died

  599. it is finished

  600. not I am finished

  601. but it is finished

  602. my task

  603. to come

  604. to die

  605. a slave's death

  606. to redeem

  607. those enslaved

  608. by not

  609. by nature

  610. gods

  611. my task

  612. my mission

  613. has finished

  614. some of you might say

  615. okay

  616. George

  617. help me out

  618. with something here

  619. I thought God

  620. knows everything

  621. so how can it say

  622. that he knows me

  623. like I thought God

  624. knows everything

  625. how can it say

  626. he knows me

  627. look again at verses

  628. 8 and 9

  629. you might have noticed

  630. that 8 and 9

  631. are important verses

  632. and if all you remember

  633. afterwards is 8 and 9

  634. and not my points

  635. then I have

  636. the Holy Spirit

  637. done a good work

  638. in our midst

  639. listen to verses

  640. 8 and 9 again

  641. formerly when you

  642. did not know God

  643. you were enslaved

  644. by those that by nature

  645. are not gods

  646. but now that you

  647. have come to know

  648. God

  649. or rather

  650. to be known

  651. by God

  652. if you could put up

  653. the first point

  654. the next point

  655. that would be very helpful

  656. when by faith

  657. we receive the gospel

  658. we become known

  659. by God

  660. as his treasured

  661. child forever

  662. that's what the text

  663. is saying

  664. when we by faith

  665. receive

  666. we receive the gospel

  667. we become known

  668. by God

  669. as his treasured

  670. child forever

  671. if you go back

  672. later on

  673. and those of you

  674. were here last week

  675. and I didn't put to sleep

  676. and you remember it

  677. we talked about how

  678. you know

  679. it's so interesting

  680. when you give your life

  681. to Jesus

  682. like when I

  683. when I became a Christian

  684. I didn't know

  685. an awful lot

  686. all I had

  687. was this sense

  688. that

  689. there must be

  690. something more

  691. and that when I was

  692. in the presence

  693. of real Christians

  694. who were singing

  695. God's praise

  696. and then I

  697. saw them afterwards

  698. I sensed that

  699. there was something

  700. more

  701. and I knew

  702. there was something

  703. more

  704. and I knew

  705. it was connected

  706. to Jesus

  707. and I knew

  708. I had to have

  709. Jesus in my life

  710. and I had a strong

  711. long battle

  712. before I surrendered

  713. all I had

  714. was this sense

  715. that if I reached

  716. out to Jesus

  717. he would take me

  718. and that there

  719. was something more

  720. and you all have

  721. your own different

  722. stories

  723. but one of the

  724. wonderful things

  725. is that we

  726. we just have

  727. in my case

  728. I just have this

  729. sense that there's

  730. something more

  731. and you reach out

  732. to Jesus

  733. and he reaches

  734. down to you

  735. and takes you

  736. and then you

  737. start to realize

  738. as you read

  739. his word

  740. all that happens

  741. when he takes

  742. you by the hand

  743. like I didn't

  744. really have

  745. any sense

  746. that when I

  747. reached out

  748. to Jesus

  749. that when he

  750. took my hand

  751. what he was

  752. doing is saying

  753. George

  754. this seals

  755. the exchange

  756. the doom

  757. you deserve

  758. was on me

  759. the destiny

  760. I deserve

  761. is now on you

  762. the shame

  763. that is on you

  764. is now on me

  765. being able

  766. to be in a sense

  767. fully open

  768. to God

  769. is now on you

  770. all the things

  771. that you've done

  772. wrong

  773. that you deserve

  774. punishment for

  775. that's now on me

  776. my perfect life

  777. of obedience

  778. that now

  779. clothes you

  780. I didn't know

  781. those things

  782. when I put out

  783. my hand to

  784. Jesus

  785. I learned

  786. them afterwards

  787. maybe some of

  788. you are just

  789. learning it now

  790. and one of the

  791. other things

  792. I didn't know

  793. is that when I

  794. put my hand

  795. out to Jesus

  796. and he reached

  797. down and took

  798. mine

  799. I become

  800. known by God

  801. and not only

  802. do I become

  803. known by God

  804. I become

  805. God's

  806. known by God

  807. and his

  808. treasured

  809. child

  810. and this is

  811. something that

  812. will exist

  813. forever

  814. just pause a

  815. little bit

  816. before I explain

  817. a little more

  818. about no one

  819. you know

  820. it seems

  821. very very

  822. unkind

  823. and uncharitable

  824. to say that

  825. there are no

  826. other gods

  827. that exist

  828. but this is

  829. why it's so

  830. important to

  831. the gospel

  832. to grasp

  833. this

  834. if there

  835. are other

  836. gods

  837. or other

  838. powers

  839. that really

  840. exist

  841. that are

  842. like God

  843. that are

  844. true rivals

  845. to God

  846. then one of

  847. them could

  848. elbow God

  849. and he'll

  850. let me go

  851. one of them

  852. can make an

  853. accusation about

  854. me to God

  855. and God

  856. will let me

  857. go

  858. one of

  859. them can

  860. grab me

  861. themselves

  862. and pull

  863. me out

  864. of God's

  865. grips

  866. and God

  867. will let

  868. me go

  869. but when

  870. we understand

  871. that there

  872. is in fact

  873. only one

  874. God

  875. and there

  876. are no

  877. other

  878. gods

  879. then when

  880. the Bible

  881. says

  882. that we

  883. are known

  884. by God

  885. and he

  886. will never

  887. let us

  888. go

  889. nothing

  890. can make

  891. him

  892. let us

  893. go

  894. because

  895. God

  896. has

  897. no

  898. rivals

  899. he

  900. has

  901. no

  902. rivals

  903. this

  904. if you

  905. go back

  906. and you

  907. read

  908. Galatians

  909. 4

  910. and you

  911. see all

  912. this

  913. language

  914. about

  915. the

  916. son

  917. you

  918. understand

  919. that

  920. maybe

  921. part

  922. of

  923. how

  924. to

  925. understand

  926. how

  927. it

  928. is

  929. that

  930. God

  931. can

  932. know

  933. everything

  934. but

  935. now

  936. it

  937. says

  938. that

  939. he

  940. knows

  941. us

  942. in a

  943. particular

  944. way

  945. because

  946. now

  947. what

  948. it's

  949. talking

  950. about

  951. it's

  952. a

  953. different

  954. type

  955. of

  956. idea

  957. than

  958. just

  959. mere

  960. knowledge

  961. it's

  962. knowing

  963. us

  964. as

  965. the

  966. son

  967. who

  968. inherits

  969. everything

  970. which is

  971. what we

  972. talked

  973. about

  974. last

  975. week

  976. it's

  977. personal

  978. knowledge

  979. in fact

  980. if you

  981. could

  982. put up

  983. the next

  984. point

  985. here's

  986. the claim

  987. I

  988. cannot

  989. know

  990. God

  991. unless

  992. he

  993. knows

  994. me

  995. first

  996. I

  997. cannot

  998. know

  999. God

  1000. unless

  1001. he

  1002. knows

  1003. me

  1004. first

  1005. what's

  1006. going on

  1007. in this

  1008. idea of

  1009. personal

  1010. knowledge

  1011. and God

  1012. knowing us

  1013. first

  1014. in some

  1015. way

  1016. imagine

  1017. imagine

  1018. you're

  1019. going to

  1020. this

  1021. church

  1022. for a

  1023. year

  1024. and

  1025. in

  1026. this

  1027. church

  1028. you

  1029. start

  1030. to

  1031. hear

  1032. a lot

  1033. about

  1034. this

  1035. other

  1036. person

  1037. a lot

  1038. of

  1039. different

  1040. people

  1041. they

  1042. talk

  1043. about

  1044. this

  1045. person

  1046. a lot

  1047. and

  1048. they

  1049. just

  1050. talk

  1051. about

  1052. him

  1053. or

  1054. her

  1055. and

  1056. they

  1057. tell

  1058. you

  1059. lots

  1060. of

  1061. stories

  1062. about

  1063. him

  1064. for

  1065. instance

  1066. he's

  1067. not

  1068. here

  1069. but

  1070. we

  1071. could

  1072. probably

  1073. all

  1074. tell

  1075. you

  1076. 10

  1077. Daniel

  1078. Gilman

  1079. stories

  1080. he

  1081. wouldn't

  1082. mind

  1083. me

  1084. using

  1085. him

  1086. as

  1087. an

  1088. person

  1089. and

  1090. you

  1091. might

  1092. actually

  1093. say

  1094. who's

  1095. that

  1096. person

  1097. that's

  1098. Bob

  1099. that's

  1100. Bob

  1101. really

  1102. oh

  1103. gosh

  1104. that's

  1105. Bob

  1106. and

  1107. you

  1108. might

  1109. feel

  1110. like

  1111. you

  1112. know

  1113. them

  1114. because

  1115. you've

  1116. heard

  1117. so

  1118. much

  1119. about

  1120. them

  1121. but

  1122. you

  1123. don't

  1124. really

  1125. know

  1126. them

  1127. right

  1128. you

  1129. just

  1130. know

  1131. a

  1132. whole

  1133. lot

  1134. of

  1135. stuff

  1136. about

  1137. them

  1138. you

  1139. don't

  1140. know

  1141. them

  1142. and

  1143. then

  1144. maybe

  1145. you're

  1146. in

  1147. lineup

  1148. for

  1149. coffee

  1150. with

  1151. Bob

  1152. and

  1153. you

  1154. just

  1155. say

  1156. hi

  1157. and

  1158. and

  1159. it's

  1160. one

  1161. of

  1162. those

  1163. times

  1164. when

  1165. you

  1166. say

  1167. hi

  1168. to

  1169. Bob

  1170. there's

  1171. a

  1172. little

  1173. bit

  1174. of

  1175. a

  1176. click

  1177. or

  1178. you

  1179. have

  1180. a

  1181. sense

  1182. of

  1183. a

  1184. connection

  1185. between

  1186. the

  1187. two

  1188. of

  1189. you

  1190. and

  1191. then

  1192. before

  1193. you

  1194. know

  1195. it

  1196. you

  1197. decide

  1198. to

  1199. have

  1200. coffee

  1201. or

  1202. something

  1203. after

  1204. the

  1205. service

  1206. or

  1207. lunch

  1208. after

  1209. the

  1210. service

  1211. and

  1212. you

  1213. hit

  1214. it

  1215. off

  1216. and

  1217. in

  1218. the

  1219. days

  1220. and

  1221. weeks

  1222. ahead

  1223. you

  1224. start

  1225. to

  1226. spend

  1227. time

  1228. together

  1229. and

  1230. you

  1231. get

  1232. to

  1233. know

  1234. each

  1235. other

  1236. and

  1237. you

  1238. become

  1239. friends

  1240. and

  1241. in

  1242. that

  1243. personal

  1244. knowledge

  1245. what

  1246. happens

  1247. in

  1248. that

  1249. process

  1250. is

  1251. you

  1252. get

  1253. this

  1254. sense

  1255. that

  1256. you're

  1257. entering

  1258. into

  1259. their

  1260. life

  1261. in

  1262. some

  1263. way

  1264. they

  1265. now

  1266. know

  1267. you

  1268. and

  1269. you're

  1270. entering

  1271. into

  1272. their

  1273. life

  1274. and

  1275. at

  1276. the

  1277. same

  1278. time

  1279. you

  1280. have

  1281. the

  1282. sense

  1283. that

  1284. they're

  1285. entering

  1286. into

  1287. your

  1288. life

  1289. they have

  1290. a

  1291. bit

  1292. of

  1293. a

  1294. place

  1295. in

  1296. your

  1297. life

  1298. and

  1299. at

  1300. the

  1301. same

  1302. time

  1303. you

  1304. also

  1305. sort

  1306. of

  1307. understand

  1308. that

  1309. not

  1310. only

  1311. is

  1312. there

  1313. this

  1314. friendship

  1315. now

  1316. but

  1317. that

  1318. there's

  1319. going

  1320. to be

  1321. growth

  1322. into

  1323. the

  1324. future

  1325. that

  1326. it's

  1327. not

  1328. just

  1329. that

  1330. you

  1331. have

  1332. a

  1333. one

  1334. nice

  1335. conversation

  1336. but

  1337. you

  1338. have

  1339. this

  1340. sense

  1341. that

  1342. there's

  1343. a

  1344. friendship

  1345. and

  1346. it's

  1347. going

  1348. to

  1349. grow

  1350. like

  1351. there's

  1352. some

  1353. hope

  1354. or

  1355. future

  1356. or

  1357. legs

  1358. on

  1359. this

  1360. relationship

  1361. and

  1362. at

  1363. the

  1364. same

  1365. time

  1366. you

  1367. have

  1368. this

  1369. bit

  1370. of

  1371. a

  1372. claim

  1373. that

  1374. goes

  1375. and

  1376. Bob

  1377. said

  1378. well

  1379. actually

  1380. we're

  1381. not

  1382. friends

  1383. you'd

  1384. be

  1385. crushed

  1386. because

  1387. in that

  1388. type

  1389. of

  1390. personal

  1391. knowledge

  1392. there's

  1393. a

  1394. claim

  1395. and

  1396. not

  1397. only

  1398. a

  1399. claim

  1400. but

  1401. a

  1402. sense

  1403. of

  1404. things

  1405. going

  1406. on

  1407. in

  1408. the

  1409. future

  1410. and

  1411. you'd

  1412. be

  1413. crushed

  1414. now

  1415. that's

  1416. how

  1417. it

  1418. just

  1419. works

  1420. when

  1421. there's

  1422. just

  1423. two

  1424. people

  1425. and

  1426. we're

  1427. both

  1428. people

  1429. and

  1430. it's

  1431. a

  1432. little

  1433. bit

  1434. equal

  1435. but

  1436. let's

  1437. just

  1438. think

  1439. of

  1440. you

  1441. know

  1442. it's

  1443. hard

  1444. to

  1445. think

  1446. of

  1447. God

  1448. but

  1449. think

  1450. of

  1451. something

  1452. different

  1453. think

  1454. about

  1455. becoming

  1456. friends

  1457. with

  1458. the

  1459. Queen

  1460. of

  1461. England

  1462. I was

  1463. going to

  1464. use

  1465. either

  1466. Trump

  1467. or

  1468. Trudeau

  1469. as an

  1470. example

  1471. but

  1472. the

  1473. opinion

  1474. polls

  1475. might

  1476. not

  1477. make

  1478. that

  1479. a

  1480. good

  1481. example

  1482. in

  1483. terms

  1484. of

  1485. how

  1486. they're

  1487. doing

  1488. so

  1489. I

  1490. think

  1491. most

  1492. people

  1493. like

  1494. the

  1495. Queen

  1496. and

  1497. we

  1498. know

  1499. a

  1500. little

  1501. bit

  1502. about

  1503. it

  1504. some

  1505. of

  1506. us

  1507. know

  1508. people

  1509. who

  1510. are

  1511. fixated

  1512. about

  1513. the

  1514. Queen

  1515. and

  1516. we

  1517. think

  1518. it's

  1519. a

  1520. little

  1521. bit

  1522. odd

  1523. right

  1524. Queen

  1525. memorabilia

  1526. Queen

  1527. facts

  1528. and

  1529. stuff

  1530. like

  1531. that

  1532. by

  1533. the

  1534. way

  1535. I'm

  1536. talking

  1537. about

  1538. the

  1539. Queen

  1540. of

  1541. England

  1542. not

  1543. the

  1544. Rock

  1545. group

  1546. just

  1547. to

  1548. be

  1549. clear

  1550. about

  1551. this

  1552. in

  1553. case

  1554. some

  1555. of

  1556. you

  1557. are

  1558. a

  1559. little

  1560. bit

  1561. confused

  1562. and

  1563. but

  1564. and

  1565. you

  1566. know

  1567. the

  1568. way

  1569. it

  1570. is

  1571. with

  1572. the

  1573. Queen

  1574. how

  1575. on

  1576. earth

  1577. could

  1578. I

  1579. ever

  1580. become

  1581. the

  1582. Queen's

  1583. friend

  1584. I've

  1585. been

  1586. told

  1587. that

  1588. if

  1589. she

  1590. reaches

  1591. out

  1592. her

  1593. hand

  1594. to

  1595. you

  1596. you

  1597. can

  1598. take

  1599. it

  1600. but

  1601. you

  1602. don't

  1603. reach

  1604. out

  1605. your

  1606. hand

  1607. to

  1608. her

  1609. and

  1610. have

  1611. her

  1612. take

  1613. it

  1614. and

  1615. you

  1616. know

  1617. it

  1618. would

  1619. be

  1620. let's

  1621. say

  1622. you

  1623. have

  1624. an

  1625. honour

  1626. and

  1627. you

  1628. get

  1629. to

  1630. go

  1631. to

  1632. Buckingham

  1633. Palace

  1634. and

  1635. you

  1636. meet

  1637. the

  1638. Queen

  1639. and

  1640. you

  1641. know

  1642. you

  1643. might

  1644. think

  1645. I

  1646. think

  1647. there

  1648. was

  1649. a

  1650. bit

  1651. of

  1652. connection

  1653. between

  1654. me

  1655. and

  1656. the

  1657. Queen

  1658. and

  1659. your

  1660. friends

  1661. would

  1662. say

  1663. are

  1664. you

  1665. smoking

  1666. dope

  1667. like

  1668. get

  1669. over

  1670. yourself

  1671. there's

  1672. no

  1673. connection

  1674. between

  1675. you

  1676. and

  1677. the

  1678. Queen

  1679. but

  1680. if

  1681. the

  1682. Queen

  1683. phones

  1684. you

  1685. up

  1686. you

  1687. go

  1688. whoa

  1689. and

  1690. she

  1691. says

  1692. and

  1693. she

  1694. chats

  1695. with

  1696. you

  1697. for

  1698. a

  1699. few

  1700. moments

  1701. like

  1702. if

  1703. you

  1704. were

  1705. like

  1706. me

  1707. it

  1708. would

  1709. be

  1710. like

  1711. I

  1712. would

  1713. be

  1714. like

  1715. the

  1716. deer

  1717. in

  1718. the

  1719. headlights

  1720. right

  1721. you

  1722. wouldn't

  1723. know

  1724. what

  1725. to

  1726. say

  1727. and

  1728. then

  1729. she

  1730. invites

  1731. you

  1732. over

  1733. for

  1734. lunch

  1735. and

  1736. it's

  1737. maybe

  1738. not

  1739. a

  1740. thousand

  1741. people

  1742. but

  1743. just

  1744. ten

  1745. and

  1746. then

  1747. she

  1748. calls

  1749. you

  1750. and

  1751. she

  1752. invites

  1753. you

  1754. over

  1755. and

  1756. then

  1757. it's

  1758. a

  1759. private

  1760. thing

  1761. and

  1762. then

  1763. at

  1764. some

  1765. point

  1766. in

  1767. time

  1768. you

  1769. realize

  1770. you're

  1771. talking

  1772. on

  1773. the

  1774. phone

  1775. you're

  1776. actually

  1777. spending

  1778. time

  1779. with

  1780. each

  1781. other

  1782. the

  1783. Queen

  1784. knows

  1785. you

  1786. the

  1787. Queen

  1788. considers

  1789. you

  1790. her

  1791. friend

  1792. and

  1793. now

  1794. I

  1795. can

  1796. consider

  1797. the

  1798. Queen

  1799. my

  1800. friend

  1801. before

  1802. I

  1803. wasn't

  1804. allowed

  1805. to

  1806. even

  1807. touch

  1808. her

  1809. now

  1810. if

  1811. we

  1812. get

  1813. together

  1814. I

  1815. could

  1816. put

  1817. my

  1818. arm

  1819. around

  1820. her

  1821. I

  1822. think

  1823. she's

  1824. short

  1825. my

  1826. arm

  1827. around

  1828. her

  1829. and

  1830. I

  1831. wouldn't

  1832. have

  1833. guards

  1834. coming

  1835. and

  1836. arresting

  1837. me

  1838. she

  1839. could

  1840. put

  1841. her

  1842. arm

  1843. on

  1844. me

  1845. now

  1846. if

  1847. that's

  1848. how

  1849. it

  1850. works

  1851. just

  1852. with

  1853. the

  1854. Queen

  1855. that's

  1856. how

  1857. it

  1858. works

  1859. even

  1860. in

  1861. a

  1862. far

  1863. higher

  1864. degree

  1865. with

  1866. God

  1867. in

  1868. our

  1869. arrogance

  1870. and

  1871. pride

  1872. we

  1873. catch

  1874. for

  1875. God

  1876. but

  1877. in

  1878. reality

  1879. we

  1880. can't

  1881. know

  1882. God

  1883. unless

  1884. he

  1885. knows

  1886. us

  1887. first

  1888. and

  1889. when

  1890. he

  1891. knows

  1892. us

  1893. some

  1894. of

  1895. his

  1896. life

  1897. comes

  1898. into

  1899. us

  1900. and

  1901. our

  1902. life

  1903. goes

  1904. into

  1905. him

  1906. and

  1907. a

  1908. claim

  1909. is

  1910. made

  1911. by

  1912. God

  1913. in

  1914. our

  1915. friendship

  1916. and

  1917. the

  1918. possibility

  1919. of

  1920. growth

  1921. into

  1922. the

  1923. future

  1924. is

  1925. present

  1926. as

  1927. well

  1928. God

  1929. will

  1930. never

  1931. let

  1932. me

  1933. go

  1934. God

  1935. will

  1936. never

  1937. let

  1938. me

  1939. go

  1940. if

  1941. you

  1942. could

  1943. put

  1944. up

  1945. the

  1946. next

  1947. point

  1948. when

  1949. God

  1950. knows

  1951. me

  1952. he

  1953. knows

  1954. me

  1955. for

  1956. eternity

  1957. my

  1958. knowing

  1959. of

  1960. him

  1961. ebbs

  1962. and

  1963. flows

  1964. his

  1965. knowing

  1966. of

  1967. me

  1968. is

  1969. unfailing

  1970. and

  1971. here's

  1972. where

  1973. that

  1974. other

  1975. knowledge

  1976. of

  1977. him

  1978. is

  1979. very

  1980. powerful

  1981. if

  1982. I

  1983. got

  1984. to

  1985. become

  1986. friends

  1987. with

  1988. the

  1989. queen

  1990. at

  1991. some

  1992. point

  1993. in

  1994. time

  1995. I

  1996. might

  1997. start

  1998. to

  1999. worry

  2000. that

  2001. if

  2002. she

  2003. knew

  2004. a

  2005. little

  2006. bit

  2007. about

  2008. me

  2009. she

  2010. wouldn't

  2011. want

  2012. to

  2013. be

  2014. my

  2015. friend

  2016. or

  2017. it

  2018. might

  2019. be

  2020. that

  2021. in

  2022. a

  2023. couple

  2024. of

  2025. months

  2026. or

  2027. something

  2028. I

  2029. do

  2030. something

  2031. and

  2032. as a

  2033. result

  2034. of

  2035. that

  2036. she

  2037. won't

  2038. want

  2039. to

  2040. be

  2041. my

  2042. friend

  2043. but

  2044. God

  2045. knows

  2046. me

  2047. from

  2048. the

  2049. moment

  2050. of

  2051. my

  2052. conception

  2053. to

  2054. the

  2055. moment

  2056. of

  2057. my

  2058. death

  2059. he

  2060. knows

  2061. the

  2062. dreams

  2063. I

  2064. have

  2065. that

  2066. I

  2067. don't

  2068. remember

  2069. when

  2070. I

  2071. wake

  2072. up

  2073. he

  2074. knows

  2075. all

  2076. my

  2077. masks

  2078. he

  2079. knows

  2080. the

  2081. things

  2082. I'm

  2083. proud

  2084. of

  2085. he

  2086. knows

  2087. the

  2088. things

  2089. I'm

  2090. ashamed

  2091. of

  2092. he

  2093. knows

  2094. all

  2095. these

  2096. things

  2097. about

  2098. me

  2099. and

  2100. yet

  2101. he

  2102. chose

  2103. in

  2104. love

  2105. to

  2106. have

  2107. God

  2108. the

  2109. son

  2110. of

  2111. God

  2112. die

  2113. for

  2114. me

  2115. and

  2116. he

  2117. knows

  2118. me

  2119. perfectly

  2120. and

  2121. he

  2122. chooses

  2123. to

  2124. know

  2125. me

  2126. perfectly

  2127. deeply

  2128. eternally

  2129. unshakably

  2130. I

  2131. have

  2132. periods

  2133. of

  2134. rebellion

  2135. I

  2136. have

  2137. periods

  2138. of

  2139. doubt

  2140. I

  2141. have

  2142. periods

  2143. of

  2144. just

  2145. unbelievable

  2146. narcissistic

  2147. self

  2148. obsession

  2149. do I

  2150. hear an

  2151. amen

  2152. no

  2153. just

  2154. but

  2155. God

  2156. his

  2157. knowledge

  2158. of me

  2159. never

  2160. stops

  2161. he

  2162. knows

  2163. me

  2164. eternally

  2165. and

  2166. you

  2167. see

  2168. as

  2169. this

  2170. truth

  2171. begins

  2172. to

  2173. grip

  2174. us

  2175. there's

  2176. a

  2177. profound

  2178. type

  2179. of

  2180. security

  2181. that

  2182. starts

  2183. to

  2184. enter

  2185. into

  2186. our

  2187. life

  2188. that

  2189. religion

  2190. will

  2191. just

  2192. never

  2193. provide

  2194. because

  2195. you

  2196. see

  2197. religion

  2198. is

  2199. always

  2200. about

  2201. performance

  2202. it's

  2203. always

  2204. about

  2205. being

  2206. able

  2207. to

  2208. have

  2209. the

  2210. right

  2211. type

  2212. of

  2213. family

  2214. to

  2215. be

  2216. successful

  2217. at

  2218. child

  2219. raising

  2220. to

  2221. be

  2222. successful

  2223. in

  2224. friendships

  2225. to

  2226. be

  2227. successful

  2228. in

  2229. being

  2230. able

  2231. to

  2232. if

  2233. not

  2234. successful

  2235. at

  2236. least

  2237. to

  2238. mask

  2239. your

  2240. lack

  2241. of

  2242. success

  2243. and

  2244. make

  2245. claims

  2246. of

  2247. success

  2248. to

  2249. look

  2250. really

  2251. good

  2252. in

  2253. church

  2254. and

  2255. not

  2256. have

  2257. people

  2258. know

  2259. about

  2260. maybe

  2261. some

  2262. bad

  2263. things

  2264. going

  2265. on

  2266. in

  2267. your

  2268. life

  2269. bad

  2270. things

  2271. in

  2272. your

  2273. marriage

  2274. bad

  2275. things

  2276. in

  2277. your

  2278. friendship

  2279. bad

  2280. things

  2281. with

  2282. your

  2283. health

  2284. and

  2285. it's

  2286. all

  2287. about

  2288. always

  2289. trying to

  2290. have to

  2291. maintain

  2292. a front

  2293. and an

  2294. appearance

  2295. and

  2296. as

  2297. the

  2298. gospel

  2299. begins

  2300. to

  2301. grip

  2302. us

  2303. there

  2304. begins

  2305. to

  2306. be

  2307. this

  2308. type

  2309. of

  2310. basic

  2311. security

  2312. that

  2313. God

  2314. knows

  2315. me

  2316. he

  2317. knows

  2318. me

  2319. eternally

  2320. and

  2321. when

  2322. he

  2323. knows

  2324. me

  2325. eternally

  2326. he

  2327. knows

  2328. me

  2329. eternally

  2330. he

  2331. will

  2332. never

  2333. let

  2334. me

  2335. go

  2336. the

  2337. direction

  2338. is

  2339. going

  2340. to

  2341. go

  2342. into

  2343. all

  2344. of

  2345. eternity

  2346. the

  2347. new

  2348. heaven

  2349. and

  2350. the

  2351. new

  2352. earth

  2353. he

  2354. knows

  2355. me

  2356. he

  2357. will

  2358. not

  2359. let

  2360. me

  2361. go

  2362. I

  2363. can

  2364. hardly

  2365. bear

  2366. to

  2367. know

  2368. myself

  2369. because

  2370. of

  2371. some

  2372. of

  2373. the

  2374. things

  2375. I've

  2376. done

  2377. but

  2378. he

  2379. saw

  2380. it

  2381. and

  2382. he

  2383. died

  2384. for

  2385. me

  2386. he

  2387. knows

  2388. me

  2389. which

  2390. is

  2391. why

  2392. just

  2393. in

  2394. closing

  2395. if we

  2396. read

  2397. the

  2398. next

  2399. of

  2400. the

  2401. text

  2402. the

  2403. rest

  2404. of

  2405. the

  2406. text

  2407. we

  2408. start

  2409. to

  2410. see

  2411. some

  2412. very

  2413. important

  2414. things

  2415. look

  2416. at

  2417. verse

  2418. 12

  2419. brothers

  2420. and

  2421. sisters

  2422. I

  2423. entreat

  2424. you

  2425. become

  2426. as

  2427. I

  2428. am

  2429. for

  2430. I

  2431. also

  2432. have

  2433. become

  2434. as

  2435. you

  2436. are

  2437. it's

  2438. the

  2439. first

  2440. command

  2441. in

  2442. the

  2443. book

  2444. of

  2445. Galatians

  2446. if you

  2447. could

  2448. put up

  2449. the

  2450. point

  2451. the

  2452. gospel

  2453. is

  2454. unbending

  2455. but

  2456. it

  2457. shapes

  2458. us

  2459. to

  2460. stoop

  2461. to

  2462. share

  2463. the

  2464. gospel

  2465. what

  2466. it

  2467. means

  2468. what

  2469. I

  2470. mean

  2471. is

  2472. this

  2473. what

  2474. Paul

  2475. is

  2476. saying

  2477. here

  2478. is

  2479. that

  2480. when

  2481. he

  2482. became

  2483. like

  2484. Galatians

  2485. he

  2486. lived

  2487. amongst

  2488. them

  2489. he

  2490. worked

  2491. amongst

  2492. them

  2493. he

  2494. ate

  2495. like

  2496. them

  2497. he

  2498. learned

  2499. how

  2500. they

  2501. thought

  2502. he

  2503. learned

  2504. how

  2505. they

  2506. talked

  2507. he

  2508. listened

  2509. to

  2510. them

  2511. in

  2512. compassion

  2513. he

  2514. went

  2515. to

  2516. them

  2517. he

  2518. spent

  2519. time

  2520. with

  2521. them

  2522. he

  2523. stooped

  2524. you

  2525. see

  2526. you

  2527. can

  2528. only

  2529. stoop

  2530. if

  2531. you're

  2532. secure

  2533. if

  2534. you're

  2535. consumed

  2536. with

  2537. pride

  2538. and

  2539. arrogance

  2540. and

  2541. you're

  2542. looking

  2543. down

  2544. on

  2545. your

  2546. nose

  2547. on

  2548. people

  2549. they

  2550. have

  2551. to

  2552. come

  2553. up

  2554. to

  2555. you

  2556. but

  2557. when

  2558. you're

  2559. secure

  2560. in

  2561. being

  2562. known

  2563. by

  2564. God

  2565. you

  2566. can

  2567. stoop

  2568. to

  2569. listen

  2570. and

  2571. try

  2572. to

  2573. understand

  2574. and

  2575. after

  2576. listening

  2577. and

  2578. understanding

  2579. and

  2580. compassion

  2581. be able

  2582. to

  2583. share

  2584. the

  2585. unbending

  2586. gospel

  2587. because

  2588. you

  2589. know

  2590. that

  2591. God

  2592. loves

  2593. them

  2594. and

  2595. wants

  2596. to

  2597. know

  2598. them

  2599. as

  2600. well

  2601. listen

  2602. to

  2603. verse

  2604. 13

  2605. and

  2606. following

  2607. you

  2608. know

  2609. it

  2610. was

  2611. because

  2612. of

  2613. a

  2614. bodily

  2615. ailment

  2616. that

  2617. I

  2618. preached

  2619. the

  2620. gospel

  2621. to

  2622. you

  2623. at

  2624. first

  2625. what

  2626. has

  2627. become

  2628. of

  2629. your

  2630. blessedness

  2631. for

  2632. I

  2633. testify

  2634. to

  2635. you

  2636. that

  2637. if

  2638. possible

  2639. you

  2640. would

  2641. have

  2642. garged

  2643. out

  2644. your

  2645. eyes

  2646. and

  2647. given

  2648. them

  2649. to

  2650. me

  2651. have

  2652. I

  2653. then

  2654. become

  2655. your

  2656. enemy

  2657. by

  2658. telling

  2659. you

  2660. the

  2661. truth

  2662. as

  2663. we

  2664. are

  2665. gripped

  2666. by

  2667. the

  2668. gospel

  2669. we

  2670. are

  2671. shaped

  2672. to

  2673. be

  2674. used

  2675. for

  2676. God's

  2677. glory

  2678. in

  2679. the

  2680. midst

  2681. of

  2682. suffering

  2683. why

  2684. suffering

  2685. is

  2686. still

  2687. suffering

  2688. but

  2689. as

  2690. we're

  2691. gripped

  2692. by

  2693. the

  2694. fact

  2695. that

  2696. God

  2697. knows

  2698. me

  2699. and

  2700. my

  2701. identity

  2702. isn't

  2703. found

  2704. in

  2705. my

  2706. health

  2707. my

  2708. beauty

  2709. my

  2710. strength

  2711. my

  2712. ability

  2713. to be

  2714. used

  2715. by

  2716. God

  2717. is

  2718. also

  2719. not

  2720. defined

  2721. by

  2722. my

  2723. strength

  2724. and

  2725. my

  2726. beauty

  2727. my

  2728. ability

  2729. to be

  2730. used

  2731. by

  2732. God

  2733. is

  2734. shaped

  2735. by

  2736. the

  2737. fact

  2738. that

  2739. he

  2740. stooped

  2741. to

  2742. me

  2743. and

  2744. knows

  2745. me

  2746. then

  2747. even

  2748. in

  2749. weakness

  2750. God

  2751. can

  2752. use

  2753. us

  2754. just

  2755. as

  2756. Paul

  2757. brought

  2758. the

  2759. gospel

  2760. as a

  2761. result

  2762. of

  2763. weakness

  2764. and

  2765. one

  2766. final

  2767. thing

  2768. if you

  2769. could

  2770. put up

  2771. the

  2772. point

  2773. as I

  2774. start

  2775. reading

  2776. at

  2777. verse

  2778. 17

  2779. they

  2780. make

  2781. much

  2782. of

  2783. you

  2784. in

  2785. other

  2786. words

  2787. the

  2788. false

  2789. brothers

  2790. that are

  2791. troubling

  2792. them

  2793. they

  2794. flatter

  2795. all

  2796. the

  2797. time

  2798. but

  2799. for

  2800. no

  2801. good

  2802. purpose

  2803. they

  2804. want

  2805. to

  2806. shut

  2807. you

  2808. out

  2809. in other

  2810. words

  2811. they

  2812. want

  2813. to

  2814. shut

  2815. you

  2816. out

  2817. from

  2818. Paul

  2819. and

  2820. the

  2821. apostolic

  2822. church

  2823. that you

  2824. may

  2825. make

  2826. much

  2827. of

  2828. them

  2829. that

  2830. you

  2831. might

  2832. be

  2833. just

  2834. in a

  2835. group

  2836. that

  2837. flatters

  2838. them

  2839. they

  2840. flatter

  2841. you

  2842. so

  2843. you

  2844. will

  2845. flatter

  2846. them

  2847. go

  2848. more

  2849. and

  2850. more

  2851. secure

  2852. you

  2853. are

  2854. freed

  2855. up

  2856. to

  2857. give

  2858. not

  2859. expecting

  2860. that

  2861. you

  2862. are

  2863. going

  2864. to

  2865. give

  2866. so

  2867. you

  2868. get

  2869. something

  2870. back

  2871. because

  2872. there

  2873. is

  2874. that

  2875. fundamental

  2876. psychic

  2877. security

  2878. in

  2879. religion

  2880. it's

  2881. always

  2882. inherently

  2883. competitive

  2884. and

  2885. who's

  2886. in

  2887. power

  2888. and

  2889. whether

  2890. you're

  2891. using

  2892. praise

  2893. songs

  2894. or

  2895. whether

  2896. you're

  2897. using

  2898. hymns

  2899. or

  2900. whether

  2901. it's

  2902. Anglican

  2903. or

  2904. whether

  2905. it's

  2906. Baptist

  2907. or

  2908. whether

  2909. it's

  2910. Roman

  2911. Catholic

  2912. or

  2913. whether

  2914. it's

  2915. this

  2916. and

  2917. as

  2918. long

  2919. as

  2920. these

  2921. things

  2922. exist

  2923. on

  2924. the

  2925. level

  2926. of

  2927. religion

  2928. you

  2929. can't

  2930. just

  2931. sort

  2932. of

  2933. do

  2934. something

  2935. purely

  2936. for them

  2937. expecting

  2938. nothing

  2939. in

  2940. return

  2941. but

  2942. as

  2943. the

  2944. gospel

  2945. grips

  2946. us

  2947. the

  2948. ability

  2949. to

  2950. give

  2951. expecting

  2952. nothing

  2953. in

  2954. return

  2955. is

  2956. one

  2957. of

  2958. the

  2959. implications

  2960. and

  2961. byproducts

  2962. of

  2963. the

  2964. gospel

  2965. please

  2966. stand

  2967. I

  2968. don't

  2969. know how

  2970. you'll

  2971. pray

  2972. as a

  2973. result

  2974. of

  2975. this

  2976. sermon

  2977. but

  2978. for

  2979. some

  2980. of

  2981. you

  2982. maybe

  2983. who

  2984. have

  2985. never

  2986. given

  2987. your

  2988. lives

  2989. to

  2990. Jesus

  2991. I

  2992. just

  2993. want

  2994. to

  2995. really

  2996. assure

  2997. you

  2998. nothing

  2999. in

  3000. your

  3001. life

  3002. is

  3003. a

  3004. surprise

  3005. to

  3006. God

  3007. nothing

  3008. that

  3009. will

  3010. be

  3011. in

  3012. your

  3013. life

  3014. in

  3015. the

  3016. future

  3017. is

  3018. a

  3019. surprise

  3020. to

  3021. God

  3022. knowing

  3023. you

  3024. perfectly

  3025. Jesus

  3026. died

  3027. for

  3028. you

  3029. and

  3030. he

  3031. died

  3032. for

  3033. you

  3034. so

  3035. that

  3036. God

  3037. when

  3038. you

  3039. trust

  3040. him

  3041. in

  3042. faith

  3043. that

  3044. God

  3045. would

  3046. know

  3047. you

  3048. in

  3049. such

  3050. a

  3051. way

  3052. and

  3053. if

  3054. you've

  3055. never

  3056. done

  3057. it

  3058. there's

  3059. no

  3060. better

  3061. time

  3062. than

  3063. right

  3064. now

  3065. to

  3066. just

  3067. call

  3068. out

  3069. to

  3070. Jesus

  3071. and

  3072. say

  3073. Jesus

  3074. be

  3075. my

  3076. savior

  3077. and

  3078. know

  3079. me

  3080. that's

  3081. all

  3082. you

  3083. have

  3084. to

  3085. say

  3086. Jesus

  3087. be

  3088. my

  3089. savior

  3090. and

  3091. know

  3092. me

  3093. be

  3094. my

  3095. savior

  3096. and

  3097. know

  3098. me

  3099. thank

  3100. you

  3101. that

  3102. you

  3103. that

  3104. you

  3105. to

  3106. say

  3107. that

  3108. in

  3109. your

  3110. words

  3111. father

  3112. thank

  3113. you

  3114. for

  3115. Jesus

  3116. thank

  3117. you

  3118. for

  3119. the

  3120. gospel

  3121. thank

  3122. you

  3123. father

  3124. that

  3125. you

  3126. know

  3127. us

  3128. first

  3129. thank

  3130. you

  3131. father

  3132. that

  3133. when

  3134. you

  3135. know

  3136. us

  3137. first

  3138. we

  3139. can

  3140. know

  3141. you

  3142. thank

  3143. you

  3144. that

  3145. you

  3146. communicate

  3147. that

  3148. through

  3149. your

  3150. word

  3151. thank

  3152. you

  3153. father

  3154. for

  3155. the

  3156. wonder

  3157. of

  3158. the

  3159. cross

  3160. and

  3161. what

  3162. Jesus

  3163. did

  3164. for

  3165. us

  3166. thank

  3167. you

  3168. father

  3169. how

  3170. that

  3171. reveals

  3172. who

  3173. you

  3174. are

  3175. and

  3176. your

  3177. heart

  3178. for

  3179. us

  3180. and

  3181. your

  3182. desire

  3183. for

  3184. us

  3185. to

  3186. free

  3187. us

  3188. so

  3189. that

  3190. we

  3191. aren't

  3192. enslaved

  3193. to

  3194. make

  3195. us

  3196. secure

  3197. knowing

  3198. that

  3199. you

  3200. know

  3201. us

  3202. father

  3203. thank

  3204. you

  3205. for

  3206. the

  3207. gospel

  3208. thank

  3209. you

  3210. father

  3211. for

  3212. this

  3213. father

  3214. make

  3215. us

  3216. disciples

  3217. of

  3218. Jesus

  3219. who

  3220. are

  3221. gripped

  3222. by

  3223. the

  3224. gospel

  3225. learning

  3226. to

  3227. believe

  3228. what

  3229. you

  3230. say

  3231. in

  3232. your

  3233. word

  3234. and

  3235. live

  3236. secure

  3237. lives

  3238. for

  3239. your

  3240. glory

  3241. and

  3242. all

  3243. this

  3244. we

  3245. ask

  3246. in

  3247. the

  3248. name

  3249. of

  3250. Jesus

  3251. your

  3252. son

  3253. and

  3254. our

  3255. savior

  3256. amen
