  1. Let me just pray for us as we get into this passage.

  2. Father, I just feel so inadequate of bringing this passage to us this morning.

  3. I feel my words are just not enough.

  4. I feel like there is so much here of your glory and your beauty.

  5. Words are not enough.

  6. And yet I pray this morning, open our eyes to see you.

  7. Open our eyes to see how glorious and honorable and beautiful you are and what you've done for us is.

  8. Let us not go away just going through the motions this morning.

  9. We want to see you in your name.

  10. Amen.

  11. Amen.

  12. Amen.

  13. Donald Trump.

  14. I don't know why suddenly everyone started laughing.

  15. We don't normally start a sermon like that.

  16. Donald Trump is in many ways a polarizing president.

  17. Some people love him.

  18. Some people hate him.

  19. Social media has got all kinds of things, positive and negative.

  20. And what we have seen, regardless of the person, is over the last few months in his presidency, the fractures in American society exposed.

  21. And, you know, one organization decided that the way that they wanted to bring healing into the fractured society was they would put on for 100 days, 100 meals,

  22. people from every background, 50, 100, 100, 100, 100, 100.

  23. 100 meals on.

  24. Because meals are powerful.

  25. Meals speak of inclusion, welcome, belonging, reconciliation.

  26. Now, I don't know how many people actually showed up to the meals.

  27. Because in our day, just as in Jesus' day, sometimes we don't eat together.

  28. Jews would not eat with non-Jews.

  29. The rich would not eat with the poor.

  30. The CEO would not eat with the cleaner.

  31. Business class doesn't eat with economy class.

  32. But food can unite and food can divide.

  33. Because meals speak.

  34. And today we're looking at one of the most significant meals in the Bible.

  35. And we're following along this series, which is about who is this king that we claim to worship?

  36. This King Jesus.

  37. And we've seen that Jesus is the one who turns upside down our ways of operating.

  38. His glory is the cross.

  39. His majesty is in serving.

  40. And today we're going to look at the Last Supper.

  41. And we're going to look at communion.

  42. To see how this reveals Jesus and what it means to be part of his community.

  43. And how he changes everything.

  44. So we're going to look at this meal which looks back.

  45. And this meal which looks forward.

  46. And in Jesus' days, we come to look at this passage.

  47. Have the bulletin with you.

  48. Jesus says, Jesus is basically, it says, he comes and he reclines at the table with his disciples.

  49. And in Jesus' day, the host of the meal would invite people with special honor to come and eat with him.

  50. It's great networking time.

  51. You know, who you want to eat with determines who you want to associate with.

  52. And so Jesus actually is hosting this meal.

  53. It's not just any meal.

  54. It's a Passover meal.

  55. And it's the night before Jesus is going to die.

  56. It's an emotional time.

  57. And Jesus' last wish is, I want to eat with my disciples.

  58. And this Passover, he says, I've eagerly desired to eat this with you before I suffer.

  59. That means, the last wish that I have, I want you desperately to eat this Passover so that you begin to see what this meal.

  60. That Jews for hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of years, every single year, would get together with their families.

  61. And they would look back on a deliverance that God had brought for them.

  62. And what would happen?

  63. The father of the meal, he would bless the meal.

  64. And then a youngest child would say, why is this night any different from any other night?

  65. And the father of the house would begin to tell the story of the exodus.

  66. He would say, we were slaves.

  67. We were suffering in Egypt.

  68. And then, as we were trapped, God, by his mighty hand, he brought us out.

  69. He brought us out of suffering.

  70. When we thought we had no future, he came down, he rescued us, and he brought us into freedom.

  71. He brought us into the promised land.

  72. And as he kind of told this story, during the meal, there would be different blessings, different thanks to God.

  73. And then they'd read some psalms, and there'd be some flat bread there.

  74. And he would take the bread, and he would break it.

  75. And he would say, this is the bread of suffering that our fathers in the land of Egypt ate.

  76. Whoever's hungry, let him come and eat.

  77. Whoever's in need, let him come and conduct this Passover meal.

  78. This year we're here.

  79. Next year, in the land of Israel.

  80. This year we're slaves.

  81. Next year we'll be free people.

  82. Every year, that's what they would say.

  83. Every year.

  84. And notice they didn't say, our ancestors were slaves.

  85. They said, we were slaves.

  86. In fact, this meal was not just about their ancestors' story.

  87. This was about their story right today.

  88. Because they were still waiting for freedom to come.

  89. They still felt that gap.

  90. But they were looking back at this identity-forming, shaping moment in the past.

  91. Where God had brought them deliverance.

  92. And they were looking forward to when God would bring them a Messiah.

  93. who would come and bring the kingdom of freedom that they were looking for.

  94. And you know, there'd be four cups of wine, which they would drink.

  95. Which would symbolize this freedom.

  96. And they'd remember that the prophet Isaiah had said,

  97. On this mountain, the Lord Almighty will prepare a feast of rich food for all peoples.

  98. A banquet of aged wine.

  99. The best of meats.

  100. The finest of wines.

  101. Don't we all love a meal?

  102. A good meal?

  103. They're looking forward to a meal.

  104. Because banquets, if you've been to a banquet, it's about abundance.

  105. You don't go and just have a little cracker.

  106. It's about satisfying your deepest desires.

  107. If I suddenly say to you, let's go to a buffet now at the Four Seasons.

  108. Are you starting to salivate?

  109. Okay, steak.

  110. Succulent steak.

  111. Whatever.

  112. You know, you suddenly begin.

  113. Your desires are raised.

  114. Because banquets are about belonging.

  115. They're about security.

  116. They're about satisfying your desires.

  117. It's like the ultimate family dinner with the family you actually want to be with.

  118. That's the kingdom of God.

  119. And he says it's not just for the smart people.

  120. It's not just for the wealthy people.

  121. It's not just people who are very religious.

  122. It's for all peoples.

  123. There will be no business class and economy class then.

  124. North Korea and America will sit down together and eat.

  125. Arab and Jew, CEO and cleaner, Man United fan and Liverpool fan will sit down together at the table.

  126. Well, I'm not sure about the last one.

  127. But anyway.

  128. But you can all come.

  129. In a society where we fracture everything, this kingdom is a kingdom where you belong.

  130. With a host of the meal who is God himself.

  131. That's what they're looking forward to.

  132. And I think that's actually deep down what each one of us every single day are craving.

  133. It's what every politician promises us when we vote for them.

  134. Right?

  135. Security.

  136. A future.

  137. Prosperity.

  138. To make us great again.

  139. A place to belong.

  140. To be proud for ourselves and our families.

  141. And every single politician, whether it's from Nelson Mandela to Chairman Mao to Barack Obama to Donald Trump,

  142. has appeared as a great hope.

  143. And then left disappointment in their wake.

  144. It's why we worry so much about our careers and financial security and about our kids' education,

  145. about finding a spouse, about avoiding loneliness.

  146. Because we desperately desire the belonging and abundance of the kingdom of God.

  147. Do you realize every day you're longing for the kingdom of God?

  148. And yet it always seems to be out of reach.

  149. And Jesus says, verse 16,

  150. I'm not going to eat this meal again until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.

  151. And fulfilled means this meal today is a little foretaste.

  152. It's a little picture of that meal in the future.

  153. It's going to point forward to that reality.

  154. And I'm going to take you there.

  155. So the meal of the Passover looks back and it looks forward.

  156. But I want to look at the king who reshapes the meal.

  157. Because what Jesus does next,

  158. we kind of don't get this because, you know,

  159. we kind of, if you've been in church a while,

  160. we know communion and we know these kind of things.

  161. But for them back then, what Jesus does next is totally shocking.

  162. He picks up the bread and he breaks it.

  163. And all the disciples are expecting him to say,

  164. okay, this is the bread of suffering.

  165. And he says, he changes it.

  166. He says, this bread,

  167. this is my body,

  168. which is given for you.

  169. Do this in remembrance of me.

  170. Take it.

  171. This bread is not to remember the exodus in the past in Egypt into the promised land.

  172. There is a new story which I'm writing right today.

  173. This is a new bread.

  174. There's a new deliverance that you're going to look back on and look forward to.

  175. And the only way you're going to get to that kingdom is through me.

  176. I'm not going to eat this bread again.

  177. I'm not going to drink this wine again

  178. because I'm going to forge ahead a way that you can come and sit at this table.

  179. And so when he says,

  180. this is my body given for you,

  181. he says, I'm giving you something.

  182. The way to that kingdom that our hearts are craving

  183. isn't through getting a better political system

  184. or through distributing wealth better with communism or capitalism.

  185. He doesn't say your main problem is education,

  186. that you need some more morals,

  187. so I'll give you some morals,

  188. some ethical teaching.

  189. He says,

  190. I'm the king of my kingdom

  191. and you are slaves.

  192. You are slaves

  193. and the only way you can eat at my table

  194. is if I give myself for you.

  195. I'm the only way to satisfy the deepest desires of your heart.

  196. You see,

  197. do you see that little word?

  198. It says,

  199. I give myself for you.

  200. Do you see that word for?

  201. That word for means on behalf of you,

  202. in your place.

  203. I am given instead of you.

  204. Because if you think you can make this meal,

  205. this banquet,

  206. the desires of your heart by yourself,

  207. you're really wrong.

  208. Because you know what the Bible story is?

  209. The Bible story and your story and my story

  210. says the reason we don't enjoy that kingdom

  211. is because throughout our lives,

  212. we've been making poor food choices.

  213. Do you know that?

  214. It's because you've been choosing to sit

  215. with somebody else's host of the meal

  216. and not God himself.

  217. Because you know Adam and Eve?

  218. What happens?

  219. Adam and Eve,

  220. God tells Adam and Eve,

  221. he says,

  222. here,

  223. I'm offering you a meal,

  224. tree of life.

  225. And they say,

  226. oh,

  227. I prefer the other one,

  228. tree of knowledge and good and evil.

  229. I want to be independent.

  230. I want to have things by myself.

  231. I don't want you.

  232. I don't want to sit at your table,

  233. God.

  234. And so we dishonor God

  235. and turn away from him.

  236. Mount Sinai,

  237. God gives 10 commandments.

  238. And he calls Moses and 70 elders

  239. to go up and see him.

  240. And do you know what happens

  241. after he gives the 10 commandments?

  242. Most of us miss this.

  243. It says they went up

  244. and they saw God

  245. and they ate and drank.

  246. Do you know God hosted a meal?

  247. And he said,

  248. I want to host you.

  249. And do you know the very next thing

  250. they go and do?

  251. They go down the mountain

  252. and they say,

  253. oh,

  254. Moses is being a little wild.

  255. We've got to build a golden calf.

  256. We've got to make an idol.

  257. And then do you know what it says?

  258. It says,

  259. and they sat down

  260. and they ate and drank

  261. and they played together.

  262. And basically what it means is

  263. they decided,

  264. oh,

  265. God made a good meal

  266. but actually

  267. we want to have a different meal

  268. by ourselves

  269. doing our thing

  270. so we indulge.

  271. We get instant gratification

  272. for myself.

  273. Indulge myself

  274. with what I want.

  275. Let's comfort eat.

  276. Let's do sexual immorality,

  277. drinking,

  278. all the kind of things

  279. because I want to sit

  280. at a different table

  281. because I want to exalt myself.

  282. I don't want to exalt the king.

  283. I don't want to honor him.

  284. I'm going to have a different meal.

  285. And you know,

  286. when God says,

  287. sees these

  288. throughout scripture,

  289. do you know what he says?

  290. He says,

  291. if you honor me,

  292. you will receive honor.

  293. But if you dishonor me

  294. and turn to another table,

  295. do you know what you experience?

  296. You experience shame.

  297. You experience shame.

  298. Adam and Eve,

  299. shame.

  300. The people of God,

  301. shame comes on you

  302. because we were made

  303. for the glory that comes from God

  304. and to honor him.

  305. And when we turn away

  306. and find honor

  307. in any other things,

  308. what we try and do,

  309. we get shamed

  310. and then we try and cover

  311. over our shame.

  312. We try to boost

  313. our own egos up.

  314. Trying to make ourselves

  315. feel better about ourselves.

  316. And when we do that,

  317. we end up shaming other people.

  318. Because do you know

  319. what humanity's meal table

  320. looks like?

  321. In Jesus' day,

  322. it looked like this.

  323. Religious people

  324. keeping in their own little circle

  325. and then a sinful,

  326. shamed woman

  327. who'd made some poor choice

  328. in her life

  329. comes along

  330. and they're like,

  331. you're not going to sit

  332. at my meal table.

  333. Crowds come along.

  334. They're filled with hatred

  335. because they see

  336. this corrupt tax official

  337. called Zacchaeus.

  338. And they're like,

  339. Jesus, ignore him.

  340. Don't worry about him.

  341. Worry about me.

  342. They wouldn't forgive

  343. or reach out to him.

  344. But do you know

  345. what Jesus does

  346. to both that woman

  347. and Zacchaeus?

  348. He says,

  349. Zach,

  350. come down.

  351. I want to grab dinner

  352. with you.

  353. Because the way

  354. Jesus does meals

  355. is different

  356. from the way we do.

  357. Because we shame

  358. other people

  359. to make ourselves

  360. feel greater than us.

  361. You know,

  362. isn't that the way

  363. families and offices

  364. in Hong Kong work?

  365. You know,

  366. a teenage girl

  367. becomes pregnant

  368. through a poor choice

  369. and what happens

  370. as a result,

  371. the family feels shame.

  372. They can't tell

  373. their relatives

  374. so they end up

  375. excluding the girl

  376. and pushing her out.

  377. They punish her

  378. for bringing shame

  379. on the family.

  380. You know,

  381. I think we all do this.

  382. This is humanity's meal table.

  383. I remember

  384. when I was

  385. at secondary school,

  386. I was not,

  387. there was a kid there.

  388. He was socially awkward.

  389. And everyone made fun of him.

  390. No one wanted

  391. to befriend him.

  392. And I knew

  393. that I should go out

  394. and befriend him.

  395. But what I did,

  396. I discovered

  397. that all my friends

  398. were laughing at him.

  399. And so I joined in

  400. with laughing at him.

  401. Because what I saw

  402. was I wanted to belong

  403. to this community.

  404. And if it meant

  405. that I would shame

  406. the other guy,

  407. then I would do that.

  408. Do you ever

  409. laugh at people's jokes

  410. when they're laughing

  411. at someone?

  412. Do you ever gossip

  413. to make yourself

  414. feel better?

  415. So there's this division

  416. in society

  417. in your offices.

  418. That's what we do

  419. in our little community

  420. in our meal table.

  421. And when Jesus says,

  422. this is my body

  423. given for you,

  424. he's saying,

  425. I hate the way

  426. that your meal table works.

  427. I don't accept that

  428. at my table.

  429. In fact,

  430. I'll remove

  431. from my presence

  432. anyone of us

  433. who is self-glory seeking

  434. because we want

  435. to boost ourselves up

  436. to cover our shame.

  437. You can't sit

  438. at my table.

  439. And God made a way

  440. for the people,

  441. a temporary way

  442. in the Old Testament

  443. for the people

  444. to approach God.

  445. Once a year,

  446. the Day of Atonement,

  447. two goats

  448. would be brought

  449. to stand

  450. in the place

  451. of the people.

  452. And the priest

  453. would kill one goat

  454. and the blood

  455. would cover

  456. over the shame

  457. of the people.

  458. And then he'd take,

  459. he would take God's anger

  460. at them

  461. and then he'd take

  462. another goat.

  463. And what he'd do

  464. with the other goat,

  465. he would lay his hands

  466. on them

  467. and he'd confess

  468. all the shameful things

  469. the people had done.

  470. And then they'd release

  471. the goat

  472. and the goat

  473. would be excluded

  474. out of the camp,

  475. out on the side,

  476. taking all the shame away.

  477. He was substituted

  478. for the people.

  479. And Jesus says,

  480. I am your substitute.

  481. I am that goat

  482. who your sin,

  483. your shame,

  484. the way that we have

  485. tried to honor ourselves

  486. and rejected other people,

  487. it was put onto him.

  488. It was put onto him.

  489. He pushed out

  490. and excluded

  491. on the cross.

  492. God's anger

  493. at our sin

  494. was placed on him

  495. on your behalf.

  496. He was excluded.

  497. He was shamed

  498. on the cross,

  499. humiliated,

  500. so that we could be

  501. accepted back

  502. to his table.

  503. Amen.

  504. You know,

  505. generals,

  506. people in great places

  507. of honor,

  508. when you're a soldier,

  509. when an army goes out,

  510. a general normally

  511. stays at the back

  512. and just sends out

  513. his troops.

  514. And if they die

  515. and they suffer

  516. and they're in the midst

  517. of the battlefield,

  518. the general then

  519. just sends more troops

  520. until finally

  521. all the ammunition

  522. of the enemy

  523. is used up

  524. and then the general

  525. comes in

  526. and says,

  527. wow,

  528. what a great victory

  529. I have won.

  530. but Jesus

  531. comes himself.

  532. He comes himself.

  533. He leads

  534. the battle lines

  535. where no one else

  536. would

  537. for you,

  538. for you,

  539. for you.

  540. Sometimes

  541. we have the impression

  542. that God the Father

  543. is kind of angry

  544. at us

  545. and Jesus

  546. is kind of

  547. just protecting us,

  548. you know,

  549. from Jesus.

  550. Okay,

  551. try not to hurt them

  552. too much.

  553. But the next verse

  554. says this,

  555. verse 22.

  556. The Son of Man

  557. goes as it's been determined.

  558. The Son of Man

  559. goes as it's been determined.

  560. You know,

  561. sometimes bad stuff

  562. happens in our lives

  563. and we wonder,

  564. is God trying to punish me?

  565. Ever felt like that?

  566. Verse 22

  567. is a powerful verse

  568. because it says,

  569. this is a grammar form.

  570. Okay,

  571. I'm going to give you grammar.

  572. Grammar,

  573. which says,

  574. it's called a divine passive,

  575. which means,

  576. it's Bible speak

  577. for saying,

  578. the whole Trinity,

  579. God the Father,

  580. God the Son,

  581. God the Holy Spirit,

  582. were all sitting around

  583. a meal table

  584. plotting

  585. and planning

  586. how they could take you

  587. and me

  588. out of this place

  589. of exclusion,

  590. not being at his meal table,

  591. and he said,

  592. how can I bring you

  593. to myself

  594. so you can enjoy

  595. the fellowship

  596. that we have?

  597. And the only way

  598. they could do that

  599. was if that goat,

  600. if Christ came for you

  601. and took

  602. that exclusion,

  603. he was excluded

  604. so you never have to be.

  605. So God will never punish you

  606. if you turn to him

  607. because he's already

  608. taken the punishment

  609. on himself.

  610. That's how much God

  611. desires you

  612. to eat at his table.

  613. that's the king

  614. that we remember

  615. at communion

  616. for you.

  617. How are we doing?

  618. Okay,

  619. third thing.

  620. So we've seen the meal,

  621. it looks back

  622. and it looks forward.

  623. When Christ comes,

  624. he said,

  625. actually this meal

  626. is all about me.

  627. It's all about

  628. what I've done.

  629. There's a new time

  630. to look back on

  631. and a new thing

  632. to look forward to.

  633. third thing.

  634. The disciples

  635. right in the midst

  636. of this emotional

  637. kind of tear-jerking moment

  638. where Jesus is talking

  639. about the suffering

  640. on the cross.

  641. It's like the closing speech

  642. of the movie

  643. where he's describing

  644. his sacrifice for them.

  645. You can hear the violins

  646. in the background.

  647. And the disciples

  648. are moved

  649. and touched

  650. by what Jesus

  651. is going to do for them.

  652. Are they?

  653. Look in verse 24.

  654. What do they do next?

  655. They're arguing.

  656. A dispute arose

  657. among them

  658. as to which of them

  659. was to be guarded

  660. as the greatest.

  661. And they're going,

  662. okay,

  663. if Jesus is the king

  664. of God's kingdom,

  665. I want to make sure

  666. I'm on the top table.

  667. And Peter's going,

  668. well,

  669. I should be there

  670. because I've walked on water.

  671. And, you know,

  672. Philip's going,

  673. yeah,

  674. but you fell in.

  675. And they're kind of,

  676. they're fighting

  677. against each other

  678. and totally wrapped up

  679. in themselves.

  680. They've missed everything

  681. Jesus has said.

  682. And what are they

  683. trying to do?

  684. They're trying to elevate

  685. themselves

  686. like everybody else

  687. in society.

  688. And I love this.

  689. What does Jesus do?

  690. Jesus doesn't go,

  691. you stupid,

  692. insensitive idiots.

  693. I'm having a moment here

  694. and I just need

  695. a bit of support.

  696. He doesn't say that.

  697. He says,

  698. he draws this distinction

  699. between the way

  700. everyone else works

  701. and the way he works.

  702. He says,

  703. the kings of the Gentiles

  704. exercise lordship over them.

  705. That means,

  706. in the world,

  707. if you're the leader,

  708. you show your power

  709. and your boss

  710. by telling people

  711. what to do,

  712. by making sure

  713. you're in control

  714. of everything.

  715. That's what it means.

  716. Use force if necessary.

  717. Okay?

  718. Sometimes that may be

  719. your boss.

  720. But those in authority

  721. are called benefactors.

  722. And he says,

  723. okay,

  724. there's another way

  725. people try and control

  726. and boost their ego.

  727. They either try and control

  728. things or

  729. they try and show

  730. how generous they are

  731. to everyone

  732. so that you think,

  733. oh,

  734. aren't they amazing?

  735. You know,

  736. in ancient Rome,

  737. every building

  738. that was built

  739. was built by a benefactor,

  740. a rich person

  741. who donated money

  742. and then made sure

  743. that they had

  744. their name on a plaque

  745. just to show

  746. how generous we were.

  747. We do that in Hong Kong

  748. as well.

  749. I mean,

  750. we even have one

  751. on the wall here.

  752. Now,

  753. now,

  754. I'm not questioning

  755. the motivation of her,

  756. but actually,

  757. what Jesus is saying

  758. is often in our society,

  759. the way that we do that

  760. is we try and,

  761. you know,

  762. TVB,

  763. have you seen on TVB,

  764. they have,

  765. there's charity donations

  766. and they bring the big check

  767. and they show,

  768. okay,

  769. look how great I am

  770. and then you put your name

  771. on there

  772. and we try and get honor

  773. in our society.

  774. And Jesus says,

  775. that's the way

  776. other people do it

  777. but not so with you.

  778. But not so with you.

  779. You see,

  780. society's all about

  781. boosting ourselves up,

  782. trying to boost

  783. our own image

  784. because we feel shamed

  785. and we try and make

  786. ourselves high.

  787. But Jesus says,

  788. I'm reshaping you

  789. in my image,

  790. not the image

  791. of our society around.

  792. I'm going to change

  793. the honor

  794. so that you live

  795. for my honor

  796. and you live for honor

  797. in my eyes,

  798. not in honor

  799. of the eyes

  800. of the people

  801. around you.

  802. You see,

  803. we say,

  804. I'm not respected

  805. by my boss enough.

  806. He's not seeing

  807. my full potential.

  808. I should be more elevated

  809. than I am.

  810. And you've been working

  811. for six months

  812. in the company.

  813. And Jesus says,

  814. yeah,

  815. that's how other people

  816. around you will think.

  817. But not so with you,

  818. Watermark.

  819. The greatest among you

  820. will become

  821. as the youngest.

  822. We lash out angrily

  823. at our kids

  824. when they disrespect us

  825. and don't do

  826. what we want them to.

  827. Because we desperately

  828. want to gain control.

  829. We want to be respected

  830. even by our kids.

  831. But Jesus says,

  832. anger is not so

  833. with you

  834. because you belong

  835. to me.

  836. And we go,

  837. yeah,

  838. but how can I do that?

  839. Like,

  840. because that's natural

  841. for me to want

  842. to boost myself.

  843. It's natural for me

  844. to want these things

  845. because we're natural

  846. self-glory junkies.

  847. And Jesus doesn't say,

  848. okay,

  849. here's the three rules

  850. that you need

  851. to stop being,

  852. thinking of yourself

  853. so much.

  854. He says,

  855. here's how you get

  856. reshaped.

  857. Look at me.

  858. Remember me.

  859. The one who reclines

  860. at the table

  861. in the place of honor

  862. who has every right

  863. to be served

  864. is me.

  865. But I am among you

  866. as one who serves.

  867. when we take communion,

  868. we're looking again

  869. at who Jesus is.

  870. We're saying,

  871. because we're all

  872. like those disciples,

  873. we constantly struggle.

  874. We're trying to get honor

  875. from everyone else's eyes.

  876. And then we come to church

  877. and we just take communion

  878. and we don't realize

  879. that one of the major reasons

  880. we don't share the gospel,

  881. people,

  882. one of the major reasons

  883. why we struggle to share

  884. our faith

  885. is because we don't want

  886. to be shamed

  887. by other people

  888. because we crave

  889. their honor in their eyes.

  890. And we need to take communion

  891. regularly to remind ourselves

  892. of a king

  893. who was willing

  894. to be shamed for us

  895. so that he might honor us

  896. because the king

  897. has served us.

  898. I don't know if you imagine,

  899. you imagine Xi Jinping

  900. hears about a waiter

  901. who has been

  902. trying to discredit

  903. his regime.

  904. Xi Jinping decides

  905. to come down

  906. to the restaurant

  907. with his troops

  908. to pay a visit

  909. to this guy.

  910. Probably wouldn't happen

  911. but he'd just send

  912. the people in front.

  913. And he comes down

  914. and he sees

  915. this waiter in front of him

  916. who's been trying

  917. to oppose him.

  918. Imagine what the waiter

  919. feels at that moment

  920. when he sees

  921. Xi Jinping,

  922. a man of huge honor,

  923. authority,

  924. and power

  925. in front of him.

  926. How would you feel?

  927. Probably terror

  928. if you know

  929. that you've actually

  930. been trying to fight

  931. against him.

  932. And what would happen

  933. if she comes in

  934. and says,

  935. okay,

  936. Walter,

  937. let's call him

  938. Walter the waiter,

  939. Walter,

  940. Walter,

  941. sit down.

  942. I'm going to serve you.

  943. In fact,

  944. I prepared

  945. an amazing banquet

  946. for you.

  947. In fact,

  948. I did it myself.

  949. I've spent

  950. the last 10 days

  951. trying to prepare

  952. this for you.

  953. What's the waiter

  954. going to be thinking?

  955. You're probably

  956. going to poison me

  957. or something.

  958. And if at the end

  959. of the meal,

  960. and it's an incredible meal,

  961. you know,

  962. and he's there,

  963. he's serving him,

  964. and then he says,

  965. and I want you

  966. to come for me

  967. to dinner every week.

  968. What's going on

  969. in that waiter's mind?

  970. His perception

  971. of the king,

  972. the emperor,

  973. the president,

  974. whatever,

  975. has got to change.

  976. But I think

  977. what we'd be thinking

  978. is that's not

  979. the way things work.

  980. That's just unrealistic.

  981. It doesn't work

  982. in the world like that

  983. because people

  984. who've got power,

  985. they don't come down

  986. and think and serve you.

  987. What they do

  988. is they serve themselves

  989. and they use you

  990. to get what they want.

  991. Isn't that how

  992. many bosses work?

  993. But Jesus is saying,

  994. yeah,

  995. that's how honor works

  996. in the world,

  997. but that's not how

  998. honor works in my kingdom.

  999. Because I'm a different

  1000. kind of king,

  1001. I come and serve.

  1002. Xi Jinping may have

  1003. the authority

  1004. to govern a nation.

1005. He may have the authority

  1006. to imprison you

  1007. or execute you,

1008. but I have more authority

  1009. than he has.

  1010. I hold galaxies

  1011. in my hands,

  1012. I have the power

  1013. of life and death

  1014. over every single person,

  1015. including the greatest presidents.

  1016. I'm in control

  1017. of history

  1018. from the first

  1019. to the last.

  1020. If you go from

1021. the end of the universe

  1022. to the other end,

  1023. billions of years,

  1024. millions of light years,

  1025. that's just a step

  1026. for me.

  1027. And yet I know

1028. every hair on your head.

1029. And yet I know you.

  1030. And yet I've come

  1031. to serve you

  1032. personally.

1033. There is no world leader

  1034. who will go

1035. and do that for you.

  1036. There is only one

  1037. who will.

  1038. That is Jesus Christ,

  1039. the king

  1040. of an alternative kingdom.

  1041. And he honors you.

  1042. Did you get that?

  1043. He honors you

  1044. because if you read,

  1045. you read down

  1046. and he says

  1047. to his disciples,

  1048. I'm assigning you.

  1049. His disciples

  1050. who have just been

  1051. all about themselves,

1052. who are just so like us,

  1053. he says,

  1054. I'm assigning you,

  1055. I'm giving you

  1056. a kingdom

1057. what my father gave me

1058. so that you may eat

1059. and drink at my table

  1060. in my kingdom

  1061. and sit on thrones

  1062. judging the 12 tribes

  1063. of Israel.

  1064. What he's saying is

  1065. we sometimes think

  1066. Jesus died

  1067. just to forgive us

  1068. our sins.

  1069. He did,

1070. but he did more than that.

  1071. He died to take

  1072. your shame

1073. and to give you honor

  1074. at his table

1075. so that you would see

1076. that he is the one

1077. that you are to honor

  1078. as the host

1079. in all of your life.

1080. No matter what other people

  1081. think about you.

  1082. You see,

  1083. when he steps down,

1084. if Xi Jinping did that

  1085. and stepped down

  1086. and served someone

  1087. who was a rebel,

  1088. what do you think

  1089. the troops around

  1090. would think about him?

1091. Would he go up or down

  1092. in their estimation?

  1093. He'd go down, right?

  1094. Because they're thinking

  1095. you should be executing

  1096. this guy.

  1097. But Jesus comes down

1098. and he takes the shame

  1099. of everyone else

  1100. around him.

  1101. He takes the shame

  1102. and he removes it

  1103. so you don't have

  1104. to live in shame

  1105. but he brings you

1106. to honor at his table.

  1107. That's where he's taking you.

  1108. That's what he's done

  1109. for you.

  1110. At communion,

  1111. we look back

  1112. to what he's done

  1113. and we look forward

  1114. to where he's going.

  1115. Jesus' command.

  1116. Someone once said this.

  1117. Jesus' command to repent

  1118. could be paraphrased.

1119. Stop trying to accrue honor

  1120. through that group

  1121. and join my group

  1122. to obtain the glory

  1123. of God's kingdom.

  1124. freedom.

  1125. Because if that waiter

  1126. was criticized

  1127. for not doing something

  1128. well by his boss

  1129. or he felt like

1130. he didn't get the respect

  1131. that he deserved

  1132. at his work,

  1133. he could turn around

  1134. and that would sting

1135. but he could turn around

  1136. and say,

  1137. yeah,

  1138. but I'm having dinner

  1139. with the president.

  1140. So,

  1141. that's just small.

  1142. When his kids disobeyed

  1143. and refused to listen

  1144. to his command

  1145. and he was tempted

  1146. to get angry,

1147. and lash out at them,

  1148. he could say,

  1149. yeah,

  1150. but I'm having dinner

  1151. with the president.

  1152. I don't need to crave

  1153. my kids' approval

  1154. or approval

  1155. from other people.

  1156. I don't need that

  1157. because I've got

1158. a meal with the president.

1159. And Jesus is not just

  1160. like an ordinary president.

  1161. He's the king

  1162. of the universe

  1163. and he invites you

  1164. to eat with him.

  1165. That's where he's taking you.

  1166. So,

  1167. do you see,

  1168. when we come

  1169. to this meal,

  1170. we have a different

  1171. honor system

  1172. with a different king

  1173. which means this.

  1174. When we look back

  1175. at the cross,

  1176. we realize

  1177. all the different ways

  1178. I'm trying to,

  1179. my shame in life,

1180. the things I've done wrong,

  1181. I come to communion

  1182. and I realize

1183. he did it for me.

  1184. He's taken it.

  1185. Like that goat,

  1186. it's gone.

  1187. I don't have to live

  1188. in shame.

  1189. But I realize

  1190. that where I'm living

  1191. for my own honor

  1192. and my own glory,

  1193. I need to repent

  1194. and say,

  1195. man,

  1196. I don't want to eat

  1197. at the table

  1198. of shame.

  1199. I want to eat

  1200. at the table

  1201. of your honor

  1202. where actually

  1203. I receive honor

  1204. because you are

  1205. getting honor.

1206. I live for your eyes only.

  1207. When we take communion

  1208. then as a community,

  1209. we are to then

  1210. be a little picture

  1211. where those divisions

  1212. in society

  1213. are broken down

  1214. where you can come

  1215. regardless of whether

1216. society says you are great

  1217. or society says

  1218. you are small.

  1219. Whether you feel

  1220. like you've done enough

  1221. or you feel like

  1222. you've never done enough.

  1223. Whether you feel

  1224. like you're a good enough

  1225. Christian

  1226. or you're not

  1227. a good enough Christian.

  1228. You can come

  1229. because he invites you

  1230. because he did it

  1231. for you.

1232. And so we are meant

1233. to be as a community

  1234. a little glimpse

1235. of the kingdom of God

  1236. that he's creating.

  1237. It's the last thing.

  1238. We look back,

  1239. Passover,

  1240. look back

  1241. to slavery

  1242. and freedom.

  1243. Christ says,

  1244. I am now

  1245. the one

  1246. who gives you

  1247. from the slavery

  1248. to your shame,

  1249. the slavery

  1250. and brings you

  1251. to freedom

  1252. just like Yiddish ed.

  1253. we see the king

  1254. who brings us together

  1255. in this new family.

  1256. Last thing

  1257. I want to share.

  1258. There is a challenge

  1259. when we come

  1260. to communion.

  1261. A challenge

  1262. and encouragement.

  1263. Here's the challenge.

  1264. Communion

  1265. is really serious

  1266. because

  1267. in 1 Corinthians 11

  1268. Paul says,

  1269. some of you

  1270. have become

  1271. judgmental.

  1272. Some of you

  1273. have been creating

  1274. divisions,

  1275. little cliques,

  1276. gossiping,

  1277. backbiting against

  1278. other people

  1279. in the church.

  1280. You've been forming

  1281. the rich over here,

  1282. the poor over here.

1283. And what he says is,

  1284. you're making

  1285. a mockery

  1286. of what Jesus

  1287. has done for you.

  1288. You're not

  1289. taking communion

  1290. when you hold on

  1291. to trying

  1292. to self-righteously

  1293. look down

  1294. on other people.

  1295. You come

  1296. with judgmentalism,

  1297. with unforgiveness,

  1298. with bitterness

  1299. in your heart.

  1300. Some of us,

  1301. we feel like

  1302. we've been disrespected,

  1303. we've been hurt.

  1304. There are things

  1305. which have gone on

  1306. where we have felt

  1307. the anger

  1308. inside of us

  1309. and we have not

  1310. forgiven other people.

  1311. And we don't even

  1312. want to.

  1313. God says to us,

  1314. don't take communion

  1315. until you come

  1316. to me.

  1317. Because

  1318. what I want

1319. to do in your heart

  1320. is I want you

  1321. to get onto

  1322. that journey.

  1323. And it's a journey

  1324. of forgiveness.

  1325. Maybe it's your spouse,

  1326. maybe it's a boss,

  1327. maybe it's your parents.

  1328. But first of all,

  1329. come and remember him.

  1330. Remember what he's

  1331. done for you.

  1332. Remember how he

  1333. honored,

  1334. oh, he's got the

  1335. greatest glory

  1336. and honor.

  1337. He came and died

  1338. for you

  1339. to honor you.

  1340. Remember him.

  1341. Let that melt

  1342. your heart

  1343. to bring forgiveness.

  1344. And as you do

  1345. and you come up

  1346. and take communion,

  1347. you can receive

  1348. forgiveness.

  1349. And if you're

  1350. wrestling with some

  1351. stuff in your life,

  1352. we have people

  1353. who can pray

  1354. for you.

  1355. Don't deal

  1356. and leave

  1357. without God

  1358. working in your life.

  1359. And you beginning

  1360. to come free

  1361. from shame

  1362. and guilt.

  1363. Amen.

  1364. Amen.

  1365. Amen.

  1366. Amen.

  1367. Amen.

  1368. Amen.

  1369. Amen.

  1370. Amen.

  1371. Amen.

  1372. Amen.

  1373. Amen.

  1374. Amen.

  1375. Amen.

  1376. Amen.

  1377. Amen.

  1378. Amen.

  1379. Amen.

  1380. Amen.

  1381. Amen.

  1382. Amen.

  1383. Amen.

  1384. Amen.

  1385. Amen.
