  1. Father, we know because of Jesus and his death upon the cross for us to save us that you love us.

  2. And so, Father, we know that even when you warn us, you warn us because you love us.

  3. And so, Father, we ask that you make us a people who believe your promises,

  4. the promise of the Holy Spirit, the promise of the fruit of the Holy Spirit in our lives,

  5. but that you would also make us a people, Father, who hear your warnings,

  6. who take them to heed.

  7. Father, pour out your Holy Spirit upon us deep within as we think about your word.

  8. And all this we ask in the name of Jesus. Amen.

  9. Please be seated.

  10. Some people are just really miserable and like to humiliate you.

  11. I had one summer job a long time ago, obviously, when I still had summer jobs,

  12. where it was sort of a working class job.

  13. And one of the guys who'd been there a long time,

  14. he just delighted in finding different ways to embarrass and humiliate the summer students.

  15. He would tell them to do absurd things or impossible things.

  16. And then when they tried to do it, he would laugh at them, laugh at us,

  17. and make fun of us for being so stupid to try to do something which was impossible.

  18. And if you tried to call his bluff, he would harangue you that you weren't listening to him

  19. and he was your boss and your supervisor and you're supposed to do what he said.

  20. He was just a really miserable person.

  21. For a lot of people in Canada, when they hear about the Bible,

  22. they think the Bible is like that boss.

  23. That the Bible just likes to tell us to do impossible things.

  24. And when we just say to him, we can't do those impossible things,

  25. then the Bible will just tell us off and castigate us and put us down.

  26. And a text like the text that we have today would be a perfect example

  27. how for many people in our culture, when they hear it, they begin to roll their eyes.

  28. And it's not just people in our culture.

  29. We live in our culture.

  30. Like we don't, I mean, every, I mean, I don't know,

  31. maybe there's a guest here from Kenya today, I don't know.

  32. But it's not as if we live in Kenya and fly in in our private jets

  33. to have Sunday morning service and then we, and here in Ottawa,

  34. and then we fly back.

  35. We live in our culture.

  36. We breathe the cultural air.

  37. And for many of us, if we're honest, sometimes we read the Bible,

  38. we feel profoundly uncomfortable with it.

  39. In fact, just to give you a heads up and just to say this,

  40. this is not a party church, not in terms of we don't have parties,

  41. but in terms of it's, we're, this isn't, we're not some political movement.

  42. We're not a group that's just trying to, you know,

  43. bring back Canada to where it used to be when it was great.

  44. I mean, if you want to do some of those things, that's fine.

  45. It's, you know, but that's not what this Sunday morning is all about.

  46. We just want to, we want to hear what,

  47. we want to hear what God says to us through his word

  48. in light of what Jesus did for us on the cross.

  49. And we want to hear all of what God has to say.

  50. And we want to be present as God speaks at the very command center of our lives,

  51. sometimes challenging us.

  52. So I just want to warn you, I'm going to talk about same-sex marriage

  53. and I'm going to talk about abortion.

  54. And I know that's going to be very painful for people.

  55. That's why I said this isn't a party church,

  56. but the Bible today talks about that in other things.

  57. And so we're going to look at it.

  58. So if you could get out your Bibles and turn in them to Galatians chapter 5,

    Galatians 5 chapter mention

  59. Galatians chapter 5, we're going to be looking at verses 16 to 25.

    Galatians 5 chapter mention

  60. And here's what it says in Galatians chapter 5, verse 16,

    Galatians 5:16

  61. which is in some ways a bit of a,

  62. it's one of those powerful statements that the Bible makes,

  63. which in a sense is to govern a lot of how we understand life

  64. and also is to help us understand actually the next,

  65. I don't know, about 20, 25 verses in the Bible in Galatians,

  66. although we're not going to look at all of that,

  67. just some of that today.

  68. And in Galatians 5, verse 16, it says this,

    Galatians 5:16

  69. but I say, walk by the Spirit.

  70. And just as a pause here, the Spirit should be capitalized.

  71. If you're reading a version of the Bible where the word Spirit isn't capitalized,

  72. it's going to be very misleading.

  73. It's very clearly referring to God.

  74. So one of the things I'm going to do is when I read,

  75. just to make it extra clear, I'm going to say the Holy Spirit.

  76. The word holy isn't there,

  77. but it helps to emphasize to us as we listen

  78. that it's referring to God, the Holy Spirit.

  79. We'll talk about this a little bit more.

  80. It's been a great source of confusion to many people

  81. to hear Spirit and not hear it that it's referring to God.

  82. So I'll read it again.

  83. Verse 16,

  84. And we'll just sort of pause there.

  85. We're going to camp on that.

  86. Actually, we'll read verse 17 as well.

  87. Sorry, verse 17.

  88. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit,

  89. and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh.

  90. For these are opposed to each other to keep you from doing the things you want to do.

  91. And we're just going to camp on that verse for a little bit.

  92. So here's the first thing.

  93. In some ways, actually, for those of you who have dabbled in Buddhism a little bit,

  94. this actually sounds almost like it's a Buddhist text.

  95. Those of you who know anything about Buddhism is the great problem in Buddhism, of course, is desire.

  96. And often in that world, not necessarily in Buddhism in a strict sense,

  97. it's often a bit of a contrast between the Spirit or God and things like human desire.

  98. And so some people might listen to this text and also just sort of wonder,

  99. okay, what's going on here in the Bible?

  100. Is the Bible saying that our bodies are bad, that it's bad to have desires?

  101. And, George, that's just...

  102. And sorry, if you're here and you're seriously seeking Buddhism,

  103. and you've come to be with us, we're really glad you're here.

  104. But I can tell you that most Canadians would say,

  105. George, if this text is telling us that the body is bad and desires are wrong,

  106. that's just nuts.

  107. But here's the...

  108. If you could put up the first point.

  109. The flesh does not refer to the body.

  110. If you read through the book of Galatians and you read through the New Testament,

  111. the word flesh often has different things which it refers to.

  112. You have to be able to tell from the context what it's referring to.

  113. Sometimes it's just referring to the fact that human beings are frail.

  114. It will contrast...

  115. It's trying...

  116. The Bible will be trying to contrast the fact that human beings are frail

  117. with how unchangeable and powerful and real God is.

  118. And occasionally, but a bit more rarely,

  119. the word flesh will be used to refer to something being earthly.

  120. It's mainly used like that in the book of Revelation,

  121. where it's contrasting something which is earthly and just right now

  122. with what God is promising to do in the future

  123. when he brings in the new heaven and the new earth.

  124. And occasionally, the word flesh does just mean body,

  125. but probably the major meaning,

  126. and the meaning which is right here,

  127. is if you could put up the next point.

  128. Well, the main thing that it teaches

  129. is it teaches something about human nature now.

  130. And so the first thing is that the Bible teaches

  131. that some things come in twos,

  132. but it never teaches dualism.

  133. I've gotten mixed up in my notes here.

  134. Here's the thing to take up a little bit of a backward step.

  135. A very, very common way that people refer to the flesh and to the spirit,

  136. especially in many, many churches,

  137. is that spiritual things are higher things.

  138. And what are higher things?

  139. Well, higher things are things like good poetry.

  140. Higher things are things like classical music or opera.

  141. Higher things are good works of art.

  142. And that what we need to do

  143. is that we need to not be concerned

  144. with these lower, grubby, natural things,

  145. but we have to be concerned with the higher things.

  146. It's a very, very common view.

  147. If you look at a lot of church signs,

  148. especially mainline churches,

  149. often they have this implicit type of idea

  150. that God calls us to higher things,

  151. and by higher things they mean,

  152. well, classical music and stuff like that.

  153. And, you know, this is a real put-off for somebody like me

  154. because, frankly, I like football more than poetry.

  155. And if you were to invite me to a poetry reading this afternoon

  156. and another person was to invite me to go watch an NFL game with you

  157. and have some beer and potato chips,

  158. I would not think very long about that decision.

  159. I would very quickly choose the grubby lower things

  160. rather than the higher elevated things.

  161. Whatever on earth that means.

  162. Like, just be frank.

  163. That's just class consciousness.

  164. That's just upper class people looking down their nose at lower class people

  165. and trying to make it look as if it's somehow divine and godly.

  166. It's religion.

  167. And that's not what the Bible means.

  168. It's not, Bible isn't contrasting grubby things

  169. like people who go to Tim Hortons

  170. and their idea of great poetry is saying,

  171. I'll have a double Mac, please.

  172. Which, for many people, that's the height of poetry.

  173. I'll have a double Mac, please.

  174. A side of fries and a Coke to go with it.

  175. Not Shakespeare.

  176. That's poetry.

  177. You know, the Bible isn't saying anything at all about higher things.

  178. And because you see, when you hear talk about higher things,

  179. it's a type of dualism.

  180. And here's the thing.

  181. This is the point behind this point.

  182. The Bible teaches that some things come in twos.

  183. Male and female, for instance.

  184. Good and evil, for instance.

  185. But it never teaches dualism.

  186. Nowhere in the Bible is dualism taught.

  187. And even now, as you're going through this text about the flesh and the spirit,

  188. it's not dualism.

  189. The fact of the matter is, is that the Holy Spirit is referring to the Holy Spirit.

  190. And the flesh is referring to something in rebellion against the Holy Spirit.

  191. And the fact of the matter is, is that every human being in the world

  192. can shake their fist in God, at God.

  193. But there's no dualism.

  194. God is God.

  195. He just decides to stop upholding everything by his will,

  196. and everything would cease to exist.

  197. And so the Bible, whether it's a dualism between male and female,

  198. or higher and lower things, or spiritual and bodily things,

  199. or anything like that, the Bible always rejects it.

  200. It constantly slips itself back into Christianity as something spiritual,

  201. but the Bible will have none of it.

  202. It always rejects dualism.

  203. And whatever Paul is saying here, when he says,

  204. but I say walk by the spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh,

  205. it's not dualism.

  206. It's something that comes in two, but it's not dualism.

  207. And some of you might say,

  208. okay, George,

  209. well, no, sorry.

  210. Lost place in my notes here several times.

  211. One of the great prejudices that we have in our age,

  212. and it affects Christians all the time,

  213. because it's a very, very constant temptation.

  214. I've felt it many, many times.

  215. I've succumbed to it many times,

  216. that the Bible needs improving,

  217. and that the Bible doesn't contain serious thinking.

  218. But when we read the Bible,

  219. this is very, very serious thinking.

  220. In fact,

  221. part of the problem that the average Canadian has with the text

  222. is that most of us don't do any serious thinking whatsoever.

  223. And when we come to the Bible,

  224. we don't actually know how to handle it,

  225. because we're actually coming face to face

  226. with very, very serious thinking.

  227. Like, just for instance,

  228. the average Canadian,

  229. without thinking about the consequences at all,

  230. would just assume that what's taught

  231. about naturalistic evolution is true.

  232. And they'll just think that that's true.

  233. And then with the very, you know,

  234. in a very next breath,

  235. they'll say something like,

  236. well, our loved one who died,

  237. they've gone to a better place.

  238. Well, that doesn't fit together at all.

  239. Well, it's completely and utterly,

  240. like,

  241. how you understand how things came to be

  242. has really serious consequences for everything.

  243. So in Hinduism,

  244. one of the things which is part of the Hindu stories

  245. about how things came to be

  246. is that in those very foundational texts,

  247. the way things came to be are divided into castes.

  248. It's one of the reasons why it's very hard

  249. to eradicate the caste system in India

  250. because their creation stories tell them that.

  251. That it's just part of this tragedy,

  252. which is human existence,

  253. which we have to break out of

  254. so that we can become part with the one.

  255. But part of this tragedy is,

  256. in a sense,

  257. part of the way that we know

  258. that we're getting out of the tragedy

  259. is that a lower caste person,

  260. when they die,

  261. maybe because they've been very good

  262. dealing with the issues in their lower caste,

  263. they'll come back as a higher caste.

  264. That in some ways,

  265. then,

  266. it's justified or right

  267. that some people are superior to other people

  268. and that superior people

  269. can treat lower people in a certain way.

  270. And, you know,

  271. one of the reasons it's within the caste,

  272. you know,

  273. another thing which has very,

  274. very serious consequences

  275. is like in Buddhism,

  276. that in Buddhism,

  277. part of how things came to be

  278. is a result of a sort of an unexplained cosmic tragedy

  279. where the one gets broken up into bits and pieces.

  280. And this bits and pieces

  281. is why we have so much difference.

  282. And the fact that there's all these different things,

  283. different people,

  284. different objects,

  285. the world,

  286. that's not really the way it's supposed to be.

  287. And we experience sorrow

  288. because we desire things,

  289. but we're treating those things

  290. as if they're real.

  291. And really what's to happen

  292. is that we're to die to all desire.

  293. We're to practice these practices

  294. so that we die to all desires

  295. and so that we can eventually

  296. just lose all desire

  297. and merge to the one.

  298. But that,

  299. like that's just a bit crazy.

  300. It's really anti-human, isn't it?

  301. Like it's anti-human

  302. to think that if I desire

  303. the good for my children,

  304. that there's somehow something wrong with that,

  305. that it just doesn't really make sense.

  306. But it's what you end up doing

  307. when your foundational stories tell you that.

  308. And I've told you many times,

  309. it's worth going on the Dig and Delve website,

  310. it's worth seeing the YouTube video

  311. of Aus Guinness discussing,

  312. having a conversation

  313. with an atheist philosophy professor

  314. from the University of Toronto

  315. who's a serious atheist.

  316. He's a serious thinker.

  317. And it's on the discussion

  318. of the meaning of life.

  319. And he's very frank.

  320. Because he accepts

  321. the basic creation story

  322. that all Canadians accept,

  323. he's not sure if free will exists.

  324. And he definitely doesn't really believe

  325. that meaning exists.

  326. And so,

  327. because the average Canadian doesn't,

  328. it's sort of this odd situation

  329. where the average Canadian

  330. doesn't think that what you find

  331. in the Bible is serious thinking,

  332. yet at the same time,

  333. the average Canadian

  334. actually rarely does

  335. any serious thinking themselves.

  336. And so,

  337. when they actually read the Bible,

  338. not understanding

  339. that it's very serious thinking.

  340. I mean,

  341. yeah,

  342. they didn't have cell phones,

  343. they didn't have an Instagram account,

  344. they didn't have a Twitter account,

  345. they didn't know how to use the internet,

  346. they didn't have a webpage,

  347. yeah,

  348. they didn't have flush toilets,

  349. but that doesn't mean

  350. they don't do serious thinking.

  351. And so,

  352. here,

  353. if you could put up the next point,

  354. please,

  355. that would be very,

  356. very good.

  357. What the Bible teaches

  358. is that God created

  359. everything that exists.

  360. And,

  361. it doesn't describe

  362. the mechanisms

  363. or how long it takes

  364. and all of that type of stuff,

  365. but that at the end of the day,

  366. he created everything,

  367. he created everything good.

  368. And that,

  369. he created human beings

  370. to be at home in this universe,

  371. and have a special role

  372. in this universe,

  373. only human beings

  374. were made in the image of God.

  375. Only human beings.

  376. And as God's image bearers

  377. in his created order

  378. that he creates,

  379. he sustains,

  380. he made it for us,

  381. in a sense,

  382. he made us to be priests.

  383. He made us

  384. to lead the praises

  385. of all creation

  386. to praise God.

  387. He made us

  388. to walk in the garden

  389. with him

  390. in the cool of the day

  391. that we would have fellowship

  392. with him

  393. and friendship with him.

  394. He made us

  395. to have a role

  396. of caring for the garden

  397. and caring for this created order.

  398. And he made us

  399. to explore

  400. the entire created order.

  401. And he made us

  402. as the ones

  403. most like him,

  404. but still created.

  405. And we human beings

  406. who have this role

  407. in a good creation,

  408. rather than choosing God,

  409. what do human beings do?

  410. Human beings doubt God.

  411. Human beings say,

  412. as it's told so brilliantly

  413. in the book of Genesis

  414. in chapter 3,

  415. when the serpent says,

  416. did God really say?

  417. Did God really say?

  418. And human beings

  419. begin to doubt

  420. what God says,

  421. doubt God's goodness,

  422. and not only

  423. do we begin

  424. to doubt those things,

  425. when doubt in and of itself

  426. isn't a sin,

  427. but that human beings

  428. and the person

  429. of Adam and Eve

  430. decide that they will be

  431. God themselves,

  432. that they will be

  433. like God.

  434. And in that act of rebellion,

  435. culminating in their doubt

  436. of God,

  437. you know,

  438. that now all of a sudden

  439. their doubt of God,

  440. of who he is,

  441. of his goodness,

  442. of his provision,

  443. of his power,

  444. of his wisdom,

  445. of his grace,

  446. their doubting of God

  447. in all of these ways,

  448. and their desire

  449. to be God.

  450. And if you see that

  451. in a sense,

  452. that when you doubt

  453. that God is good,

  454. when you doubt

  455. that he provides,

  456. when you doubt

  457. that he is full of grace,

  458. when you doubt

  459. that he is full of mercy,

  460. when you doubt

  461. that he knows

  462. what he's doing,

  463. when you doubt

  464. that he desires

  465. to have fellowship

  466. with you,

  467. and when you desire

  468. to be God yourself,

  469. what you're really saying

  470. is,

  471. God,

  472. you are a lower God,

  473. you've stood up,

  474. I'm going to do better.

  475. I'm going to be

  476. greater than you

  477. because you're not,

  478. you don't provide enough,

  479. you aren't good enough,

  480. you aren't wise enough,

  481. and I'm going to do better.

  482. And in that primal

  483. decision of human beings

  484. to rebel against God

  485. and to be like God

  486. themselves,

  487. what happened

  488. is that everything

  489. in human being

  490. became bent.

  491. This act of rebellion

  492. touches

  493. every single aspect

  494. of whatever

  495. makes a human being

  496. a human being.

  497. So I put it up here,

  498. the desire to be God

  499. has touched

  500. every aspect

  501. of what makes

  502. a human being

  503. a human being.

  504. And the flesh

  505. refers to human nature

  506. in rebellion

  507. against God.

  508. If scientists

  509. or philosophers

  510. or poets

  511. come up with

  512. some other aspects

  513. of what it means

  514. to be a human,

  515. then whatever

  516. those other

  517. new aspects are,

  518. our rebellion

  519. against God,

  520. our desire

  521. to be God

  522. has tainted it.

  523. there will be

  524. nothing discovered

  525. by philosophers

  526. or theologians

  527. or scientists

  528. or poets

  529. or mystics

  530. about what it means

  531. to be a human being

  532. that has not

  533. been touched

  534. and bent

  535. by our desire

  536. to be God.

  537. And so when the Bible

  538. says,

  539. but I say,

  540. walk by the Spirit

  541. and you will not

  542. gratify the desires

  543. of the flesh,

  544. the Bible

  545. is very,

  546. very frank.

  547. It's very serious

  548. thinking.

  549. It understands

  550. the importance

  551. of the creation story

  552. and what has happened

  553. to human beings

  554. and how it explains evil.

  555. And let me tell you,

  556. when you look

  557. at these creation stories,

  558. the creation story,

  559. first and second,

  560. Genesis 1,

  561. 2, and 3

  562. and how the Bible

  563. unfolds it

  564. throughout the entire Bible

  565. as it develops

  566. the nuances

  567. of that story,

  568. there is no wiser

  569. account of existence.

  570. than what is provided

  571. in the Bible.

  572. There is no wiser account

  573. of human existence

  574. than what is found

  575. in the Bible.

  576. No other account

  577. has such explanatory power

  578. of what it means

  579. to be human,

  580. of the complexities,

  581. the tragedies,

  582. the glories,

  583. the brokenness,

  584. the goodness,

  585. nothing compares

  586. to the richness

  587. of this biblical story,

  588. explanatory power.

  589. And so when you see

  590. the word flesh

  591. in the New Testament

  592. and when I,

  593. and it's not talking

  594. about the body,

  595. it's not talking

  596. about being frail

  597. and when it's not

  598. talking about

  599. being earthly

  600. as opposed to

  601. something that's coming

  602. in the new heaven

  603. and the new earth,

  604. it's talking about

  605. the fact that

  606. there is part

  607. of every aspect

  608. of what makes me

  609. a human being

  610. that is in rebellion

  611. against God

  612. and all of those

  613. different bits of me

  614. have desires.

  615. And those,

  616. it's not that

  617. every human desire

  618. is wrong,

  619. it's not that

  620. everything about

  621. human beings

  622. are evil,

  623. but that this desire

  624. to be God

  625. has tainted,

  626. bent,

  627. twisted,

  628. hurt

  629. every aspect

  630. of what it means

  631. to be a human being.

  632. And so what has happened?

  633. Jesus comes to redeem

  634. human beings

  635. because human beings

  636. that every single part

  637. of me that makes me me

  638. has been somehow

  639. bent slightly,

  640. in some cases

  641. not slightly wildly

  642. and spectacularly,

  643. but even the parts

  644. that aren't wildly

  645. and spectacularly bent

  646. are still slightly bent

  647. and I can never

  648. leave myself

  649. to save myself

  650. and so the constant

  651. message of the Bible

  652. is to tell us

  653. about who we are,

  654. to reveal to ourselves

  655. who we are

  656. so that we would

  657. come to the point

  658. where we would say

  659. only God can save me.

  660. Unless God

  661. has grace and mercy,

  662. I am screwed.

  663. Sorry,

  664. but that's true.

  665. And so the Bible

  666. describes God's

  667. rescue mission

  668. in the sending

  669. of his Son

  670. and part of that

  671. sending of his Son,

  672. we're going to unfold

  673. this more in a moment,

  674. is the presence

  675. of the Holy Spirit

  676. in lives of believers

  677. and the Holy Spirit

  678. is always going to be

  679. moving in a different

  680. direction

  681. than those parts

  682. of us as human beings

  683. that are in rebellion

  684. against God.

  685. Why?

  686. Because the Holy Spirit

  687. is God himself.

  688. And so it's a description

  689. of God

  690. in the person,

  691. the third person

  692. of the Trinity,

  693. God the Holy Spirit

  694. being present

  695. and active

  696. in the life

  697. of a Christian

  698. coming against

  699. those parts of us

  700. that want to be God.

  701. Think of it that way.

  702. The real God

  703. shows up

  704. in those parts

  705. of my life

  706. that desire

  707. to be God.

  708. The real God

  709. shows up.

  710. The real God

  711. shows up

  712. with power.

  713. power.

  714. That's what

  715. this is describing.

  716. But some people

  717. might say,

  718. George,

  719. here,

  720. religious people

  721. are full of pride

  722. and greed.

  723. Like,

  724. George,

  725. the way you've

  726. described the flesh,

  727. like you even

  728. sort of said,

  729. George,

  730. that in churches

  731. they've made

  732. all these mistakes

  733. as if it's somehow

  734. talking about

  735. higher things

  736. versus lower things.

  737. And so George

  738. doesn't,

  739. isn't this just

  740. one of those things

  741. where the Bible

  742. describes it

  743. but it's not

  744. any help?

  745. Like,

  746. religion

  747. seems to be

  748. helpless against

  749. all of that.

  750. Doesn't this sort

  751. of disprove the Bible?

  752. Not at all.

  753. Why does it not

  754. disprove the Bible?

  755. Well,

  756. because that's

  757. what the Bible

  758. tells us.

  759. Look again

  760. at verse 16.

  761. But I say,

  762. walk by the Spirit,

  763. the Holy Spirit,

  764. and you will not

  765. gratify the desires

  766. of the flesh.

  767. Now just skip down

  768. to verse 18

  769. and you'll notice

  770. it even has

  771. the same structure.

  772. But if you are

  773. led by the Spirit,

  774. you are not

  775. under the law.

  776. And the law

  777. is a bit of a symbol

  778. here for religion.

  779. All the way through

  780. the book of Galatians,

  781. the law is a bit

  782. of a symbol

  783. of religion,

  784. of spirituality.

  785. And so if you could

  786. put up the next point,

  787. what the Bible

  788. itself is saying

  789. is that the flesh,

  790. that is human nature

  791. in rebellion

  792. against God,

  793. exists very comfortably

  794. under religion.

  795. And it exists

  796. very comfortably

  797. under no religion.

  798. Last Sunday,

  799. some of you,

  800. you know,

  801. with the bad weather,

  802. not as,

  803. you know,

  804. some of you

  805. who are here

  806. who survived

  807. the rude winds

  808. wild lament

  809. last Sunday,

  810. I said how

  811. for many people

  812. in our culture,

  813. when they leave

  814. religion behind,

  815. they leave

  816. higher things behind,

  817. for instance,

  818. and they just

  819. become ordinary people

  820. who just

  821. like to wear,

  822. you know,

  823. just like to do

  824. ordinary things

  825. and completely

  826. and utterly

  827. leave God

  828. and the gods behind

  829. and spiritual things

  830. behind,

  831. for many people

  832. they find it

  833. as a relief,

  834. as a release.

  835. No more pretending.

  836. But,

  837. and I think,

  838. I still think

  839. that's true.

  840. It's a very,

  841. very common thing

  842. for people to describe.

  843. But when I talk

  844. to people in coffee shops,

  845. it's a very common thing

  846. to say how freeing

  847. and releasing it was

  848. to no longer bother

  849. with having to go

  850. to that church

  851. and do those things

  852. and it's like a release.

  853. But here's the thing.

  854. The flesh exists

  855. very comfortably

  856. under religion

  857. and under no religion.

  858. To leave religion

  859. behind

  860. might feel

  861. a little bit liberating,

  862. but it actually

  863. doesn't liberate you

  864. at all.

  865. Both in

  866. under religion

  867. and under no religion,

  868. you are still trapped

  869. in self-justification.

  870. And under religion

  871. and under no religion,

  872. you're still trapped

  873. under self-salvation.

  874. Under religion

  875. and under no religion,

  876. you're still looking

  877. for created things

  878. that are going to give you

  879. meaning in your life

  880. and they will always

  881. not satisfy you.

  882. Both under religion

  883. and under no religion,

  884. you will still be caught up

  885. in your own particular

  886. God project

  887. for all of the different

  888. pains and sufferings

  889. that it happens.

  890. And it feels like

  891. it's a release,

  892. but it actually doesn't

  893. deal with the problem.

  894. You see,

  895. here's the thing

  896. about the Bible text

  897. is the Bible text

  898. is not like,

  899. when it's talking

  900. about the flesh

  901. and the spirit,

  902. it's not like

  903. that boss

  904. that I began

  905. my sermon with

  906. who loved

  907. to find ways

  908. to humiliate

  909. the summer students.

  910. And if he couldn't

  911. humiliate them,

  912. then he would

  913. give them

  914. a bit of a tongue-lashing

  915. about the fact

  916. that they wouldn't

  917. obey him.

  918. And the Bible

  919. isn't like this at all.

  920. The Bible here

  921. is like when you

  922. go to the doctor

  923. because your wife

  924. or your sister

  925. or your friend

  926. finally cajoles you

  927. into going

  928. and you have

  929. some pains

  930. in your body

  931. and maybe you

  932. have some rashes

  933. and the doctor

  934. says,

  935. I have some

  936. very bad news

  937. for you.

  938. You have cancer.

  939. But the good news

  940. is because you

  941. came in,

  942. we think we

  943. can cure it.

  944. And that's

  945. what's going on

  946. here in the Bible.

  947. It's not God

  948. trying to belittle us.

  949. It's God

  950. trying to catch

  951. our attention

  952. so he can save us.

  953. so he can save us.

  954. So,

  955. George,

  956. I'm still a little bit

  957. confused,

  958. you might say.

  959. Like,

  960. okay,

  961. so what is it

  962. that the Holy Spirit

  963. puts new desires

  964. in us

  965. and takes away

  966. old desires?

  967. Like,

  968. like I don't quite

  969. understand what's

  970. going on.

  971. Well,

  972. here's where

  973. it's a little bit

  974. helpful to know

  975. the original language.

  976. Look at verses 16

  977. again.

  978. But I say,

  979. walk by the Spirit

  980. and you will not

  981. gratify the desires

  982. of the flesh.

  983. And in verse 17,

  984. for the desires

  985. of the flesh

  986. are against the Spirit

  987. and the desires

  988. of the Spirit

  989. are against the flesh

  990. for these are

  991. opposed to each other

  992. to keep you

  993. from doing the things

  994. you want to do.

  995. But if you are led

  996. by the Spirit,

  997. you are not under the law.

  998. So here's the thing.

  999. The word desires,

1000. if you could put it up

  1001. the next point,

  1002. what actually

  1003. the text is saying

1004. here is that the flesh,

  1005. it's by the nature

  1006. of the flesh

  1007. to over-desire.

  1008. It's of the nature

  1009. of the flesh

  1010. to over-desire.

  1011. And the translators,

  1012. when they're translating

  1013. the text,

  1014. the word desires

1015. connected to the Holy Spirit

  1016. isn't there.

  1017. But there's a translation

  1018. issue.

  1019. In the original language,

1020. it says that the desires

  1021. of the flesh,

  1022. the over-desires

  1023. of the flesh

  1024. are against the Spirit.

  1025. And the Spirit

  1026. comes against them.

1027. But it comes against them

  1028. with power

  1029. and it's a translation problem.

  1030. So desires catches it

  1031. for all of us.

1032. But it's of the very nature

  1033. of a God project

  1034. to over-desire.

  1035. And this is all

  1036. where Genesis 1, 2,

1037. and 3 is so wise.

  1038. So is it right

1039. for me to desire my wife?

  1040. Yes, it is right

1041. for me to desire my wife.

  1042. If I lost desire

  1043. for my wife,

1044. that would be a problem.

  1045. She would experience

  1046. it as a problem.

1047. And if I was to share it

  1048. with you,

  1049. you'd say that's a problem.

1050. So the text is in here

  1051. saying that I should

  1052. lose my desire

  1053. for my wife

  1054. or my desire

1055. to see my kids thrive

  1056. or my desire,

  1057. I mean,

  1058. other types of things

  1059. or my desire

  1060. to have some money

1061. so I can pay my bills

1062. or to have some control

  1063. in my life

1064. so my life is in chaos.

  1065. Those aren't bad desires.

  1066. But what happens

1067. is that our God project

  1068. leads us to over-desire.

1069. That all of a sudden

  1070. in my life,

1071. no matter how much money

  1072. I'm making,

1073. I always think within myself,

1074. if I only was making

  1075. an extra 10 grand,

  1076. my life would be

  1077. so much better.

  1078. And then you make

  1079. the extra 10 grand

  1080. and what's still going

  1081. on in your heart?

  1082. If I only made

  1083. an extra 10 grand,

  1084. my life would be

  1085. so much better.

  1086. Or you over-desire

  1087. over-desire your wife

1088. and all of a sudden

  1089. you're putting too much

  1090. on your wife

1091. in terms of your happiness,

  1092. your satisfaction,

1093. in terms of getting meaning,

  1094. of you become suffocating.

  1095. You know,

  1096. we all understand

  1097. how you can over-desire.

  1098. And that's just what

  1099. the Bible is saying

  1100. is that what happens

1101. is when the Holy Spirit

  1102. comes in and opposes,

  1103. it doesn't oppose

  1104. proper desires,

  1105. it opposes over-desires.

  1106. It seeks to heal

  1107. the Holy Spirit.

  1108. He heals

  1109. and restores

  1110. our desires.

  1111. And if you could

1112. wrap up the next point,

  1113. this is really important

  1114. for you to understand,

1115. is that when I put

1116. my faith in Jesus Christ,

  1117. I put the word I there

1118. so that if you write it down,

  1119. you're writing it down

  1120. for yourself.

1121. When I put my faith

  1122. in Jesus Christ

  1123. to save me,

  1124. he does save me.

1125. This is very important language.

1126. Jesus always is the one

  1127. who saves.

  1128. I contribute nothing

  1129. to him saving.

  1130. My spirit,

  1131. my flesh,

  1132. will always want

  1133. to make it think

  1134. that I've contributed

1135. some little thing about it.

  1136. my winsomeness,

  1137. my ability

  1138. to seek after God,

  1139. my ability

  1140. to know the Bible,

  1141. my, you know,

  1142. whatever it is,

  1143. my ability

1144. to sort of be open

  1145. to the Holy,

  1146. like, I'll always want

  1147. to keep slipping

  1148. in something,

1149. but I never add anything.

  1150. Jesus does it all.

  1151. And you know what?

  1152. The more you grow

  1153. in Christ,

  1154. praise God

1155. that he does it all.

  1156. Why?

  1157. Because I am weak

  1158. and frail.

  1159. I am weak

  1160. and frail.

  1161. And sometimes

  1162. I do absolutely

  1163. horrible things.

  1164. And even when I don't

  1165. do horrible things,

  1166. I think horrible things.

  1167. And sometimes

  1168. everything within me

1169. wants to turn my back

  1170. away from God.

1171. And if I had to contribute

  1172. something to my salvation,

  1173. woe is me!

  1174. Woe is me!

  1175. Woe is me!

  1176. Praise God

  1177. that I don't add anything

  1178. to what he does.

  1179. He does it all.

  1180. He saves me.

1181. I put my hand out

  1182. to receive

1183. what only he can give

1184. and only he can do

  1185. and he has done

  1186. in the person

  1187. of God

1188. has done in the person

  1189. of his son

  1190. dying upon the cross

  1191. for me.

1192. When I put my faith

  1193. in Jesus Christ

  1194. to save me,

  1195. he does save me.

  1196. And what else happens?

1197. The whole book of Galatians

  1198. is always telling us

  1199. other things.

  1200. Well, we become adopted

  1201. as his child.

  1202. We've been made free.

  1203. We've been guaranteed heaven.

  1204. There tells us

1205. a whole pile of things.

1206. And in Galatians chapter 3,

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

  1207. if you go back

1208. and look at it earlier,

  1209. chapter 3 verse 2,

  1210. I think it is,

  1211. or 1 and 2,

  1212. one of the things

  1213. that happens is

1214. I put my hand out.

  1215. In fact, really,

  1216. God helps me

  1217. put my hand out

  1218. and I receive

1219. what only he can give

  1220. in the person

1221. and the work of his son

  1222. and God saves me

1223. and at the same time

  1224. the Holy Spirit

  1225. is bestowed upon me

  1226. to indwell me.

  1227. The Holy Spirit

  1228. indwells the Christian.

  1229. And that's why

1230. if you look at this text,

  1231. the Bible here,

1232. I'm starting to run out of time,

  1233. the Bible here

  1234. really wants to emphasize

  1235. the focus

  1236. on the Holy Spirit

  1237. in this text

  1238. in light of Jesus.

  1239. Jesus.

  1240. And

  1241. it does it

  1242. by using

  1243. four similar verbs,

  1244. but they're not

  1245. identical verbs.

1246. If you could put up

  1247. the next point,

  1248. look at chapter 6,

  1249. verse 16.

  1250. It says,

  1251. but I say,

  1252. walk by the Spirit

  1253. and you will not

  1254. gratify the desires

  1255. of the flesh.

  1256. This verse

  1257. is really important.

  1258. Like,

  1259. I recommend you

  1260. memorize it.

  1261. Notice it doesn't say

  1262. walk by the Spirit

  1263. and don't gratify

1264. the desires of the flesh

  1265. as if they're equal.

  1266. It says the focus

  1267. is on thinking

  1268. about Jesus

  1269. and what he did

  1270. first upon the cross

  1271. and the gift

  1272. of the Holy Spirit

  1273. and the focus

1274. is on the Holy Spirit.

1275. And the more we focus

  1276. on walking

  1277. by the Spirit,

  1278. a consequence

  1279. is not walking,

  1280. is not gratifying

  1281. the desires

  1282. of the flesh.

  1283. And so here

  1284. in verse 16,

  1285. what does it say?

  1286. Walk by the Spirit.

  1287. Jump down

  1288. to verse 18.

  1289. But if you are

  1290. led by the Spirit,

  1291. jump down

  1292. to verse 24.

  1293. And those

  1294. who belong

  1295. to Jesus Christ

  1296. have crucified

  1297. the flesh

  1298. with its passions

  1299. and desires.

  1300. Verse 25,

  1301. if we live

  1302. by the Spirit,

  1303. let us also

  1304. keep in step

  1305. with the Spirit.

  1306. Four times

  1307. in a small number

  1308. verses,

  1309. it keeps saying

  1310. the Holy Spirit,

  1311. he is in you.

  1312. He's not tame.

  1313. He's not just

  1314. like somebody

  1315. that you can just

  1316. snap your fingers

1317. at your beck and call.

  1318. He's God,

  1319. you're not.

  1320. But he dwells

  1321. within you.

1322. And he is a person.

1323. And he has a heart.

1324. And he has a will.

  1325. And his will

  1326. within you

  1327. is to constantly

  1328. bring you back

  1329. to Jesus

  1330. to constantly

  1331. restore you

  1332. to the way

  1333. that God desired

  1334. to make you

  1335. in all of your

  1336. uniqueness,

1337. in all of the ways

  1338. that you are

  1339. special and irreplaceable.

  1340. And he's going

  1341. to heal your desires.

  1342. He's going to

  1343. reorder your desires.

  1344. For your desires

  1345. that are weak,

  1346. he's going to

  1347. inflame them.

  1348. For your desires

  1349. that are over desires,

  1350. he's going to

  1351. tame them.

  1352. He's going to

  1353. bring them

  1354. to their proper place.

  1355. And so,

  1356. because the Holy Spirit's

  1357. presence in your life

  1358. is so important,

  1359. because his work

  1360. is so important,

  1361. think about Jesus.

  1362. Think about the gift

  1363. of the Holy Spirit.

  1364. And every day say,

  1365. Father,

  1366. help me to walk

1367. by the Holy Spirit today.

1368. As I go into this meeting,

  1369. Father,

  1370. help me to walk

  1371. by the Holy Spirit.

1372. Help me to be led

  1373. by the Holy Spirit.

  1374. Help me to live

  1375. by the Holy Spirit

  1376. so that I understand

  1377. my life comes

  1378. from the Holy Spirit,

  1379. not my success

  1380. in this meeting.

  1381. Help me to keep

1382. in step with the Holy Spirit

  1383. because he is going

  1384. to go before me.

  1385. And it's just like,

  1386. I don't know,

  1387. if there was really

  1388. deep snow

  1389. and I had a two-year-old

  1390. with me

  1391. and I'd say,

  1392. listen,

  1393. I'm going to go

  1394. through the snow first

1395. and I'm going to walk

1396. like this in a shuffling way

  1397. so that I'm going

1398. to make a big ridge

1399. and you come behind me.

  1400. And that's what

  1401. the Holy Spirit

  1402. desires to do

  1403. in our lives.

  1404. You know what?

  1405. Let's look at sin

  1406. because now

  1407. that the Bible

  1408. has set this,

  1409. it wants to say,

  1410. okay,

  1411. what does the flesh

  1412. look like?

  1413. Verse 19.

  1414. Remember I said

  1415. the Bible's very serious

  1416. and

  1417. if the Bible

  1418. wounds us

  1419. by talking about

  1420. things in our life

  1421. that aren't right,

  1422. it only does it

  1423. in the context

  1424. of this

  1425. constant reminder

  1426. to remember Jesus

1427. and remember the Holy Spirit

  1428. that instead of

  1429. giving ourselves

  1430. to these things

  1431. that we walk

  1432. by the Holy Spirit,

1433. live by the Holy Spirit

1434. or led by the Holy Spirit

  1435. and are keeping

  1436. in step

  1437. with the Holy Spirit.

  1438. And so look

  1439. at verse 19.

  1440. Now the works

  1441. of the flesh

  1442. are evident.

  1443. Sexual immorality.

  1444. Now I just have a,

  1445. okay,

  1446. sexual immorality

  1447. in the original language,

  1448. here's the other thing.

1449. If you want to look

1450. at the end of the list,

  1451. look at the list,

  1452. verse 19.

  1453. Now the works

  1454. of the flesh

  1455. are evident.

  1456. It's going to give

  1457. a list of 15.

  1458. Look,

  1459. skip down

  1460. to verse 21.

  1461. I warn you

  1462. as I warned you

  1463. before

  1464. that those

  1465. who do such things

  1466. will not inherit

  1467. the kingdom of God.

  1468. Could you put

  1469. the next point up?

  1470. The Bible wants us

  1471. to have an assurance

  1472. that God saves

  1473. and it wants

  1474. to warn us

  1475. about the danger

  1476. of complacency.

  1477. And it also

  1478. wants to warn us

  1479. about the danger

  1480. of presumption

  1481. and self-serving faith.

  1482. And the Bible here

  1483. isn't saying

  1484. that if we do

  1485. any of these sins,

  1486. it means,

  1487. or if we're still

1488. doing any of these sins,

  1489. that it means

  1490. that we're not

  1491. a Christian.

  1492. This latter part

  1493. of the verse,

  1494. here's a simple way

  1495. to understand it.

  1496. Just because you have

1497. to dash for the bus

  1498. doesn't mean

  1499. you're training

  1500. for a marathon.

  1501. Just because

  1502. sometimes you dash

  1503. to catch the bus

  1504. doesn't mean

  1505. you're training

  1506. for a marathon.

  1507. And the Bible text

  1508. here isn't talking

  1509. about the fact

  1510. that Christians

  1511. do these things,

  1512. it's talking about

  1513. those who begin

  1514. to train in them,

  1515. that begin to make

1516. it a way of life.

  1517. And the Bible

  1518. is warning us

  1519. that if, in fact,

  1520. it's becoming

  1521. a way of life,

  1522. maybe it's a sign

  1523. that we've never

  1524. given our lives

  1525. to Jesus,

  1526. or maybe it's just

1527. a sign that we are

  1528. going very, very

  1529. far from God,

  1530. far from fruitfulness,

1531. and we need to call

  1532. out to Him

  1533. in repentance.

  1534. So this word

  1535. about porneia,

  1536. what this word

  1537. sexual immorality

  1538. means,

  1539. is it means

  1540. that God

  1541. designed sex

  1542. to be between

  1543. a man

  1544. and a woman

  1545. in the context

  1546. of holy matrimony.

  1547. And that any

  1548. sexual gratification,

  1549. sexual gratification,

  1550. sexual gratifying

  1551. yourself,

  1552. or sexually

  1553. inflaming yourself

  1554. outside of marriage

  1555. is a sin.

  1556. outside of

  1557. heterosexual marriage.

  1558. And that's

  1559. what the Bible

  1560. teaches.

  1561. This church

  1562. originally

  1563. owned the building

  1564. just up the street.

  1565. And we used

  1566. to be called

  1567. St. Albans.

  1568. And one of the

  1569. reasons

  1570. that we left

  1571. the Anglican Church

  1572. of Canada

  1573. is that the

  1574. Anglican Church

  1575. of Canada

  1576. believes

  1577. that there is

  1578. a way for a man

  1579. to sexually

  1580. know a man

  1581. or a woman

  1582. to sexually

  1583. know a woman

  1584. that is not,

  1585. that is actually

  1586. holy

  1587. and blessed

  1588. by God

  1589. and should be

  1590. upheld

  1591. and blessed

  1592. and called

  1593. holy

  1594. by the church.

  1595. But the Bible

  1596. here says

  1597. that those

  1598. who train

  1599. in sexual

  1600. immorality

  1601. will not

  1602. inherit

  1603. will not inherit

  1604. the kingdom

  1605. of God.

  1606. This becomes

  1607. a salvation

  1608. issue.

  1609. And because

  1610. it's a salvation

  1611. issue

  1612. as well as

  1613. an issue

  1614. as to whether

  1615. or not the Bible

  1616. is actually

  1617. true,

  1618. we as a

  1619. congregation

  1620. had to leave

  1621. at great cost

  1622. the Anglican

  1623. Church of Canada

  1624. and become

  1625. Church of the

  1626. Messiah.

  1627. Now if you're

  1628. here and you

  1629. struggle with

  1630. those things,

  1631. you struggle

  1632. with,

  1633. like,

  1634. the Bible

  1635. is,

  1636. it's a hard

  1637. teaching,

  1638. but it's a wise

  1639. teaching because

  1640. God designed

  1641. us that if

  1642. we are called

  1643. to holy

  1644. matrimony,

  1645. that we are

  1646. called for

  1647. that season

  1648. to,

  1649. for a man

  1650. to be with a

  1651. woman,

  1652. just one woman,

  1653. and for a

  1654. woman to be

  1655. with a man,

  1656. just one man,

  1657. and that that's

  1658. God's intention.

  1659. The others,

  1660. very,

  1661. very briefly,

  1662. sexual immorality

  1663. is sort of the

  1664. general term.

  1665. Impurity

  1666. is actually,

  1667. it would

  1668. actually

  1669. characterize

  1670. the transgender

  1671. movement.

  1672. It would

  1673. refer to

  1674. outside of the

  1675. perspective of

  1676. one man to

  1677. one woman

  1678. in holy

  1679. matrimony,

  1680. odd

  1681. types of

  1682. sexuality,

  1683. and that's

  1684. what it's

  1685. referring to,

  1686. and sensuality

  1687. refers to

  1688. sexualizing

  1689. everything.

  1690. It would

  1691. condemn a lot

  1692. of the

  1693. advertising that

  1694. happens on

  1695. our televisions

  1696. where everything

  1697. is sexualized,

  1698. and then the

  1699. Bible here

  1700. talks about

  1701. religion in

  1702. particular,

  1703. idolatry,

  1704. which is the

  1705. actual

  1706. worshiping of

  1707. idols,

  1708. if you

  1709. take a

  1710. yoga class,

  1711. and in the

  1712. yoga class

  1713. you are

  1714. encouraged to

  1715. use a

  1716. mantra,

  1717. you are in

  1718. the mantra

  1719. calling out

  1720. to a

  1721. Hindu god,

  1722. and you

  1723. would be

  1724. violating

  1725. idolatry.

  1726. Sorcery

  1727. is engaging

  1728. in

  1729. witchcraft

  1730. or dabbling

  1731. in spiritual

  1732. things.

  1733. sorcery.

  1734. If you

  1735. use

  1736. words,

  1737. you are

  1738. violating

  1739. this

  1740. command.

  1741. If you are

  1742. going to

  1743. a

  1744. naturopath,

  1745. not just

  1746. because you

  1747. have to

  1748. have some

  1749. herbs or

  1750. something,

  1751. but if they are

  1752. giving you

  1753. these herbs

  1754. because there are

  1755. spiritual forces

  1756. in your body

  1757. that have to

  1758. be balanced,

  1759. then you are

  1760. claiming to be

  1761. able to

  1762. manipulate these

  1763. spiritual forces,

  1764. and that would

  1765. be sorcery.

  1766. in the ancient

  1767. world as well,

  1768. one of the

  1769. primary uses

  1770. of potions

  1771. was to

  1772. create abortions.

  1773. So this

  1774. text is in

  1775. fact also

  1776. warning you

  1777. against anything

  1778. that you would

  1779. do, any

  1780. drug that you

  1781. would take

  1782. to artificially

  1783. cause an

  1784. abortion.

  1785. If you are

  1786. here today

  1787. and you have

  1788. had an

  1789. abortion,

  1790. I know this

  1791. is a very

  1792. painful thing

  1793. to find in

  1794. the Bible,

  1795. but the

  1796. Bible confronts

  1797. us with our

  1798. sin so

  1799. that we

  1800. would,

  1801. with broken

  1802. hearts,

  1803. come to

  1804. God for

  1805. healing and

  1806. restoration,

  1807. not for

  1808. condemnation

  1809. forever.

  1810. Enmity

  1811. is to

  1812. inflame

  1813. anger

  1814. between

  1815. groups.

  1816. Strife

  1817. is actually

  1818. also connected

  1819. to it,

  1820. actually being

  1821. involved,

  1822. not just in

  1823. trying to

  1824. stir up

  1825. people being

  1826. angry with

  1827. each other,

  1828. but to

  1829. actually cause

  1830. there to be

  1831. conflict.

  1832. Jealousy is

  1833. sort of just

  1834. what it

  1835. says.

  1836. It's

  1837. desiring too

  1838. much what

  1839. somebody else

  1840. has,

  1841. feeling angry

  1842. at what they

  1843. have,

  1844. desiring to

  1845. take it

  1846. away from

  1847. them.

  1848. Fits of

  1849. anger

  1850. isn't a type

  1851. of holy

  1852. anger,

  1853. but it's

  1854. especially

  1855. true of

  1856. those who

  1857. nurture

  1858. anger and

  1859. allow it to

  1860. have a

  1861. great

  1862. simmering

  1863. or even

  1864. boiling role

  1865. in our

  1866. lives.

  1867. Rivalries

  1868. is going

  1869. into

  1870. organizations,

  1871. especially

  1872. churches,

  1873. and trying

  1874. to create

  1875. parties.

  1876. And rivalry

  1877. dissensions is a

  1878. similar type of

  1879. idea as is

  1880. divisions.

  1881. It's just an

  1882. escalating of

  1883. going from

  1884. having we're

  1885. all one

  1886. group and

  1887. there's other

  1888. groups to

  1889. creating arguments

  1890. between them to

  1891. actually splitting

  1892. and causing

  1893. breakdowns in

  1894. human relations

  1895. and families

  1896. and churches

  1897. and unions

  1898. and government

  1899. over matters

  1900. which don't

  1901. really at the

  1902. end of the

  1903. day matter.

  1904. Envy is

  1905. feeling sorrow

  1906. of a blessing

  1907. that somebody

  1908. else has.

  1909. Drunkenness is

  1910. obvious.

  1911. It would also

  1912. include most

  1913. drug use.

  1914. And orgies,

  1915. there's no good

  1916. word in English

  1917. for the word

  1918. orgies,

  1919. but it's not

  1920. referring to

  1921. sex.

  1922. It's referring

  1923. to gathering

  1924. together with

  1925. other people

  1926. to take drugs

  1927. and get

  1928. completely

  1929. hammered.

  1930. And things

  1931. like these I

  1932. warn you as I

  1933. warned you

  1934. before that

  1935. those who do

  1936. such things

  1937. will not

  1938. inherit the

  1939. kingdom of

  1940. God.

  1941. But the

  1942. fruit of

  1943. the Spirit,

  1944. remember this

  1945. all begins by

  1946. the fact that

  1947. the Holy Spirit

  1948. is moving in

  1949. our lives.

  1950. And notice

  1951. that the word

  1952. works is

  1953. plural,

  1954. fruit is

  1955. singular.

  1956. Works implies

  1957. things that we

  1958. do,

  1959. fruit implies

  1960. that it's

  1961. something God

  1962. does.

  1963. But the

  1964. fruit of the

  1965. Spirit is

  1966. love,

  1967. joy,

  1968. peace,

  1969. patience.

  1970. Love, by the

  1971. way, here,

  1972. all of these

  1973. words, some of

  1974. them sound like

  1975. they're emotions.

  1976. These aren't

  1977. emotions, but

  1978. all of these

  1979. things have

  1980. emotional

  1981. consequences for

  1982. our lives.

  1983. Love means

  1984. self-giving

  1985. love.

  1986. Joy means that

  1987. you are drawing

  1988. close to God

  1989. who is the

  1990. source of all

  1991. joy.

  1992. peace means

  1993. that you're

  1994. having a type

  1995. of balance

  1996. in your life

  1997. that comes

  1998. from having

  1999. your desires

  2000. properly ordered

  2001. and having

  2002. Jesus as the

  2003. Lord of your

  2004. life.

  2005. Patience is

  2006. the ability

  2007. to put up

  2008. with people,

  2009. to not

  2010. flare up

  2011. with them

  2012. in anger.

  2013. Kindness is

  2014. not just

  2015. putting up

  2016. with them,

  2017. but actually

  2018. looking at

  2019. them and

  2020. desiring to

  2021. do them

  2022. good.

  2023. Goodness just

  2024. means being

  2025. good.

  2026. Faithfulness

  2027. means that

  2028. you're learning

  2029. how to keep

  2030. your word.

  2031. Gentleness

  2032. means that

  2033. when you're

  2034. dealing with

  2035. people who

  2036. otherwise would

  2037. inflame you

  2038. and make you

  2039. angry, that

  2040. you have

  2041. habits and

  2042. practices to

  2043. deal with

  2044. them well

  2045. just gently.

  2046. And self-control

  2047. means just

  2048. the Holy Spirit

  2049. is bringing

  2050. healing into

  2051. your life so

  2052. that your

  2053. passions and

  2054. desires come

  2055. under some

  2056. type of

  2057. control.

  2058. people.

  2059. Just a

  2060. couple of

  2061. things in

  2062. closing because

  2063. I've gone

  2064. maybe a bit

  2065. too long.

  2066. If you could

  2067. put up the

  2068. next point,

  2069. the three

  2070. points just

  2071. very quickly

  2072. in closing.

  2073. The works

  2074. of the flesh

  2075. are radically

  2076. different than

  2077. the fruit of

  2078. the Holy

  2079. Spirit.

  2080. Fruit is

  2081. definitely telling

  2082. us that it's

  2083. God who's

  2084. doing it.

  2085. Next one.

  2086. The gifts

  2087. of the Holy

  2088. Spirit are

  2089. not assigned

  2090. to the

  2091. sanctification

  2092. becoming more

  2093. like Jesus.

  2094. The fruit

  2095. of the Holy

  2096. Spirit is

  2097. the sign of

  2098. sanctification.

  2099. Next point.

  2100. Sanctification

  2101. is slow.

  2102. It is

  2103. measured in

  2104. years,

  2105. not in

  2106. seconds.

  2107. One of the

  2108. things that the

  2109. devil likes to

  2110. do to beat

  2111. us up is

  2112. make us very,

  2113. very aware

  2114. of our

  2115. failures of

  2116. the day

  2117. and blind

  2118. us to the

  2119. changes that

  2120. have come

  2121. in us

  2122. over a

  2123. year.

  2124. I invite

  2125. you all to

  2126. stand.

  2127. You've been

  2128. very patient.

  2129. And I'm

  2130. going to pray

  2131. in a moment,

  2132. but I just,

  2133. I think I'd

  2134. like to just

  2135. do,

  2136. um,

  2137. yeah,

  2138. we're just

  2139. going to,

  2140. we're going

  2141. to pray.

  2142. And then,

  2143. uh,

  2144. then I'm

  2145. going to

  2146. invite you

  2147. all to

  2148. sit down

  2149. after I've

  2150. just prayed

  2151. over you.

  2152. And I'm

  2153. going to

  2154. give you an

  2155. opportunity to

  2156. pray out

  2157. loud,

  2158. uh,

  2159. to be

  2160. audible and

  2161. brief and

  2162. clear,

  2163. uh,

  2164. around the

  2165. different things

  2166. that the Holy

  2167. Spirit might

  2168. have put on

  2169. your hearts

  2170. as the

  2171. sermon has

  2172. been preached.

  2173. Maybe just a

  2174. calling out to

  2175. God for the

  2176. Holy Spirit to

  2177. work in our

  2178. lives more,

  2179. uh,

  2180. calling out to

  2181. God for the

  2182. fruit of the

  2183. Spirit more,

  2184. just in whatever

  2185. way.

  2186. If it's just

  2187. comparative

  2188. silence because

  2189. there's kids in

  2190. the room,

  2191. then that's

  2192. fine as well.

  2193. And I'll,

  2194. I'll,

  2195. I'll bring it

  2196. to a close by,

  2197. uh,

  2198. having us go

  2199. into one of

  2200. the colics that

  2201. will be up on

  2202. the screen.

  2203. But let's just

  2204. bow our heads in

  2205. prayer.

  2206. Father,

  2207. uh,

  2208. we thank you for

  2209. Jesus.

  2210. We thank you for

  2211. what he did for

  2212. us on the

  2213. cross.

  2214. We ask,

  2215. Father,

  2216. that your Holy

  2217. Spirit would

  2218. make us disciples

  2219. of Jesus who

  2220. are gripped by

  2221. the gospel.

  2222. And as we are

  2223. gripped by the

  2224. gospel,

  2225. that we would

  2226. be a people who

  2227. are walking by

  2228. the Holy Spirit,

  2229. who are led by

  2230. the Holy Spirit,

  2231. who are living by

  2232. the Holy Spirit,

  2233. and are keeping

  2234. in step with the

  2235. Holy Spirit,

  2236. as we crucify

  2237. the flesh,

  2238. and live for

  2239. your glory.

  2240. Father,

  2241. we ask that

  2242. your Holy Spirit

  2243. would do that

  2244. in our lives,

  2245. and that we're

  2246. doing our lives

  2247. as individuals,

  2248. and as a

  2249. congregation.

  2250. And we ask

  2251. this in the

  2252. name of Jesus.

  2253. Amen.
