  1. Good morning. That was pretty good, actually.

  2. Great to be here together with everybody, and a privilege for me to be delivering God's Word to you today.

  3. So as Kevin did mention, this is my first time preaching,

  4. and as I was talking to the elders about potentially preaching today,

  5. to be honest, I was a little bit hesitant, kind of like a little bit anxious, a little bit apprehensive,

  6. but actually the elders were very encouraging.

  7. They said, you know what, Oscar? It's not your work. It's not your Word. It's not your voice.

  8. It's the Spirit of God that speaks to us and leads us. Isn't that so true?

  9. And then one of the other elders, who I won't name, was also very gracious,

  10. and was also being very encouraging, and then he said to me,

  11. Oscar, you know what? Tim Keller said that his first 200 sermons were rubbish.

  12. So I thought about that, and I realized what that means is that if I preach once every six months at Watermark,

  13. which don't get any ideas, Kevin and Chris, okay?

  14. But if I preach once every six months at Watermark, in 100 years, I'll have a decent sermon.

  15. So come back in 2118. Mark your calendars for that.

  16. And with that, let me pray for myself and for us.

  17. Father God, you know me.

  18. You know that with my own strength, using my own ability, I cannot deliver your Word this morning.

  19. So Father, I beg you, I desperately need you to speak through me, Lord.

  20. I desperately need for your Spirit to inspire me.

  21. I pray that your Word, your Word would be front and center of my mind, God,

  22. and that your voice would be heard today, God,

  23. and my voice would actually just fade into the background.

  24. I pray that our hearts, our minds will be open to hearing your Word today, Lord.

  25. I pray that we'll see, Father, how much we need you,

  26. and how beautiful and majestic our Lord Jesus Christ is.

  27. Amen.

  28. Amen.

  29. Amen.

  30. So, we've been doing a sermon series on the book of Ruth.

  31. And last week, last Sunday, we studied Ruth chapter 1.

    Ruth 1 chapter mention

  32. And in chapter 1, we learned that Ruth was set in the time of the judges,

  33. where Israel had no king, and everyone did what was right in his own eyes.

  34. And it was with that mindset that Naomi, her husband Elimelech,

  35. and their two sons left Bethlehem, the promised land of God,

  36. to try to find food in the land of Moab.

  37. But Moab was an enemy of Israel.

  38. Its people were founded upon incest.

  39. Its woman in days past had seduced the men of Israel

  40. and caused them to worship pagan gods.

  41. And in Moab, tragedy struck.

  42. Naomi's two sons married Moabite woman.

  43. But ten years later, her sons die.

  44. Naomi was left with her two daughters-in-law, Orpah and Ruth.

  45. And when Naomi hears that God brought food back to Bethlehem,

  46. she decides to return, but tells Orpah and Ruth to stay in Moab.

  47. She says to them,

  48. in Moab, at least you'll have a chance of finding a future.

  49. At least you'll have a chance that someone would marry you,

  50. someone will continue on your family line.

  51. Orpah says, great, I'll stay in Moab.

  52. But Ruth, she clings to Naomi.

  53. And in Ruth chapter 1, verse 16,

    Ruth 1:16

  54. we read that wonderful, timeless statement of commitment,

  55. faithfulness, and loyalty.

  56. As Ruth says to Naomi,

  57. don't urge me to leave you.

  58. Where you go, I will go.

  59. And where you stay, I will stay.

  60. Your people will be my people,

  61. and your God will be my God.

  62. Where you die, I will die.

  63. And there, I will be buried.

  64. And so Naomi, along with her daughter-in-law, Ruth,

  65. the most unlikely couple,

  66. journeyed to Bethlehem,

  67. the house of bread,

  68. in search of food.

  69. And they returned just at the right time,

  70. just as the barley harvest was beginning

  71. in early spring in Bethlehem.

  72. And that is where we find ourselves,

  73. in Ruth chapter 2.

    Ruth 2 chapter mention

  74. Where Ruth 1 was chaotic and tragic,

  75. in chapter 2, the narrative begins to shift.

  76. Light begins to shine on a dark situation.

  77. Harvest time means food for the people.

  78. And of course, Boaz shows up.

  79. Oh, Boaz,

  80. the man every father wants his daughter to marry.

  81. I think about that stuff just a little bit

  82. now that I have a daughter of my own, Kiva.

  83. Is the book of Ruth a love story

  84. between Boaz and Ruth?

  85. Yes, it is.

  86. Sure it is.

  87. It's a wonderful love story

  88. of how Boaz showers unprecedented favor on Ruth.

  89. But if we think of Ruth

  90. as just a traditional love story,

  91. we will miss the deeper meaning.

  92. The book of Ruth tells a much bigger story.

  93. It's about how in the midst of despair,

  94. in the midst of hopelessness,

  95. in the midst of tragedy,

  96. God wants to redeem us.

  97. In the midst of pain and brokenness,

  98. he wants to draw us close to himself.

  99. He wants to shower us

  100. with his loving kindness.

  101. It's a story of the whole Bible, isn't it?

  102. And for today's passage in Ruth chapter 2,

    Ruth 2 chapter mention

  103. what I hope we'll see

  104. is that God is constantly working behind the scenes,

  105. showering kindness upon Ruth.

  106. And this man, Boaz,

  107. this guardian or kinsman redeemer,

  108. he's there to show us

  109. a glimpse or a shadow

  110. of the ultimate redeemer to come,

  111. our Lord Jesus Christ.

  112. Let's dive into it.

  113. Let's go to Ruth chapter 2,

    Ruth 2:2

  114. verse 2 and part of verse 3.

  115. And Ruth, the Moabitess, said to Naomi,

  116. let me go into the fields

  117. and pick up the leftover grain

  118. behind anyone in whose eyes I find favor.

  119. Naomi said to her,

  120. go ahead, my daughter.

  121. So she went out

  122. and began to glean in the fields

  123. behind the harvesters.

  124. So, we start chapter 2

  125. with Naomi returning to Bethlehem

  126. and Ruth by her side.

  127. And one day,

  128. Ruth decides to glean in the fields

  129. behind the harvesters.

  130. God gave Israel the law of gleaning

  131. as a way of providing for those in society

  132. that were financially broken,

  133. specifically orphans,

  134. widows, and foreigners.

  135. And it meant that landowners,

  136. instead of maximizing profits

  137. by picking every last bit of grain,

  138. would leave some for the poor

  139. to pick up or to glean.

  140. And this was intended

  141. to reflect God's mercy on people

  142. that did not have the economic means

  143. to support themselves.

  144. But for Ruth,

  145. gleaning in the fields

  146. was dangerous.

  147. And that is why,

  148. in verse 8,

  149. Boaz tells Ruth to,

  150. stay in my fields.

  151. And he also says to her,

  152. in verse 9,

  153. I have told the men

  154. not to touch you.

  155. He said this

  156. because at that time

  157. in Israel's history,

  158. at the time of the judges,

  159. lawlessness abounded.

  160. And so,

  161. though there was a law

  162. to allow for gleaning,

  163. women who gleaned in the fields

  164. were oftentimes abused,

  165. physically, emotionally.

  166. But in spite of these obvious risks,

  167. Ruth had the courage

  168. to step out

  169. into the barley fields

  170. to glean.

  171. Why?

  172. Well, first,

  173. she was hungry.

  174. She had a real need.

  175. She was a normal person

  176. who had a normal,

  177. everyday need.

  178. And second,

  179. Ruth had made a promise

  180. to be faithful to Naomi,

  181. and her gleaning

  182. and gathering barley for food

  183. was a way for her

  184. to show love

  185. and kindness

  186. to Naomi.

  187. She was looking after her.

  188. She was keeping her promise.

  189. But the amazing thing here

  190. is that Ruth

  191. wasn't doing this alone.

  192. God was right there.

  193. Ruth did not choose this field.

  194. God chose this field.

  195. Let's look at the end

  196. of verse 3.

  197. It says,

  198. As it turned out,

  199. she found herself

  200. working in the field

  201. belonging to Boaz,

  202. who was from the clan

  203. of Elimelech.

  204. I love that phrase,

  205. as it turned out.

  206. The literal translation

  207. is chance chance,

  208. which is an exaggerated

  209. expression

  210. to convey

  211. just how unlikely

  212. it was

  213. for Ruth to stumble

  214. upon Boaz's field.

  215. As Ruth took that step

  216. of faith

  217. to go out

  218. and glean in the fields,

  219. it was clear

  220. that God

  221. had paved the way

  222. for her

  223. and allowed her

  224. to meet Boaz

  225. and to find favor

  226. with him.

  227. Of all the fields

  228. she could have stumbled upon

  229. in that dark land,

  230. she finds herself

  231. in the one field

  232. owned

  233. by a godly man.

  234. This wasn't just chance.

  235. This was God's intervention.

  236. Ruth was just going

  237. about her day,

  238. trying to put food

  239. on the table,

  240. being faithful

  241. to Naomi.

  242. Naomi,

  243. and God

  244. met her need.

  245. And where did he lead her?

  246. Right to Boaz's field.

  247. Now let's rewind

  248. for a second

  249. and go back

  250. to verse one.

  251. Let's look at Boaz.

  252. Now Naomi

  253. had a relative

  254. on her husband's side

  255. from the clan

  256. of Elimelech,

  257. a man of standing

  258. whose name

  259. was Boaz.

  260. Three things here

  261. to mention

  262. about Boaz.

  263. Number one,

  264. in terms of family relations,

  265. Boaz was a relative

  266. of Elimelech

  267. from the same clan.

  268. Now in Israel,

  269. there were the twelve

  270. tribes of Israel,

  271. the sons of Jacob.

  272. Below that

  273. were the clans

  274. of Israel,

  275. and below that

  276. were the families.

  277. Boaz was from

  278. the same clan

  279. as Elimelech.

  280. Second thing is,

  281. the text says

  282. that he was

  283. a man of standing.

  284. So Boaz

  285. was a landowner.

  286. So he was wealthy.

  287. We know that.

  288. But he wasn't

  289. just some rich guy.

  290. The Hebrew

  291. for man of standing

  292. can be roughly

  293. translated as

  294. a man of wealth,

  295. but also

  296. a man of character

  297. and of integrity.

  298. Third,

  299. what does he say?

  300. What are his first

  301. words?

  302. You can tell

  303. a lot about a man

  304. by what he says.

  305. Look at verse 4.

  306. I love

  307. his first words.

  308. He arrives

  309. back from Bethlehem,

  310. and I can imagine

  311. Boaz standing

  312. at the edge

  313. of his fields,

  314. looking out

  315. at his harvesters

  316. and saying,

  317. the Lord be with you.

  318. He blesses them.

  319. How many bosses

  320. in Hong Kong

  321. do you know

  322. that bless their colleagues?

  323. I hear Pat laughing

  324. over there.

  325. Most bosses

  326. in Hong Kong

  327. lord over

  328. or domineer

  329. over their

  330. subordinates

  331. and colleagues,

  332. but not Boaz.

  333. Boaz is kind

  334. to them.

  335. And the best

  336. example

  337. of Boaz's kindness

  338. is how

  339. he treats

  340. Ruth.

  341. In verse 5,

  342. Boaz notices

  343. Ruth in his

  344. body field,

  345. and when he

  346. realizes who

  347. she is,

  348. the Moabite

  349. widow and

  350. daughter-in-law

  351. of Naomi,

  352. he immediately

  353. showers her

  354. with kindness.

  355. What does he do?

  356. First,

  357. Boaz

  358. protects Ruth.

  359. Verse 8

  360. and 9,

  361. Boaz says to

  362. Ruth,

  363. don't go

  364. and glean

  365. in another field

  366. and don't go

  367. away from here.

  368. Stay here

  369. with my servant

  370. girls.

  371. Watch the fields

  372. where the men

  373. are harvesting

  374. and follow

  375. along after

  376. the girls.

  377. I have told

  378. the men

  379. not to touch

  380. you.

  381. Now we know

  382. Ruth needed

  383. to gather

  384. food for her

  385. and Naomi,

  386. but the only

  387. way she could

  388. do so safely

  389. was if someone

  390. protected her.

  391. And Boaz

  392. offered that

  393. protection.

  394. But you know

  395. what's so powerful

  396. is that in

  397. coming under

  398. Boaz's protection,

  399. Ruth was actually

  400. coming under

  401. the protection

  402. of God

  403. himself.

  404. Look at

  405. verse 12.

  406. Boaz,

  407. in acknowledging

  408. Ruth's loyalty

  409. to Naomi,

  410. he says to her,

  411. may you be

  412. richly rewarded

  413. by the Lord,

  414. the God

  415. of Israel,

  416. under whose

  417. wings you

  418. have come

  419. to take

  420. refuge.

  421. Under whose

  422. wings you

  423. have come

  424. to take

  425. refuge.

  426. As Ruth

  427. gleaned

  428. in Boaz's

  429. field,

  430. she thought

  431. she was

  432. coming under

  433. Boaz's

  434. protection,

  435. but in

  436. actual fact,

  437. Ruth was

  438. coming under

  439. the protection

  440. of God,

  441. under his

  442. wings.

  443. God was

  444. right there.

  445. And the

  446. second way

  447. that Boaz

  448. shows kindness

  449. to Ruth

  450. is that

  451. he accepts

  452. Ruth.

  453. Boaz

  454. didn't tell

  455. Ruth,

  456. hey,

  457. stay in my

  458. fields,

  459. you can glean

  460. as you

  461. like,

  462. my guys

  463. will take

  464. care of

  465. you,

  466. but I

  467. got to

  468. go take

  469. off and

  470. do the

  471. financial

  472. audit because

  473. it's the

  474. year end.

  475. No,

  476. Boaz

  477. takes another

  478. step and

  479. invites

  480. Ruth to

  481. dine with

  482. him at

  483. his midday

  484. meal.

  485. Verse 14,

  486. at mealtime,

  487. Boaz said to

  488. her,

  489. come over

  490. here,

  491. have some

  492. bread and

  493. dip it in

  494. the wine

  495. vinegar.

  496. When she

  497. sat down,

  498. he offered

  499. her some

  500. roasted

  501. grain.

  502. In any

  503. culture,

  504. when you

  505. invite someone

  506. to dine at

  507. your table,

  508. you project

  509. a sense of

  510. inclusion,

  511. belonging,

  512. acceptance.

  513. You eat

  514. with who

  515. you want

  516. to be

  517. associated

  518. with.

  519. I can

  520. imagine

  521. guys like

  522. Boaz,

  523. landowners,

  524. they would

  525. dine with

  526. other landowners

  527. or perhaps

  528. with customers

  529. to whom

  530. they want

  531. to do

  532. business.

  533. Actually,

  534. it's not

  535. that different

  536. from modern

  537. day Hong

  538. Kong,

  539. is it?

  540. And third,

  541. Boaz

  542. abundantly

  543. sustains

  544. Ruth.

  545. As we

  546. just saw,

  547. at the

  548. midday

  549. meal,

  550. Ruth eats

  551. right at

  552. Boaz's

  553. table.

  554. Verse 14

  555. says,

  556. she ate

  557. all she

  558. wanted

  559. and had

  560. some

  561. left over.

  562. Ruth

  563. wasn't just

  564. full after

  565. eating with

  566. Boaz.

  567. She was

  568. given so

  569. much food,

  570. she had

  571. leftovers.

  572. And then,

  573. after the

  574. meal,

  575. verse 15

  576. 16,

  577. Boaz

  578. instructs

  579. his men

  580. to pull

  581. some stalks

  582. of barley

  583. from the

  584. bundles

  585. and to

  586. leave them

  587. out in

  588. the field

  589. for Ruth

  590. to pick

  591. up.

  592. He made

  593. her job

  594. so much

  595. easier for

  596. her.

  597. He doesn't

  598. just allow

  599. Ruth to

  600. glean in

  601. the traditional

  602. way according

  603. to the

  604. letter of

  605. the law.

  606. He works

  607. behind the

  608. scenes to

  609. give Ruth

  610. abundantly

  611. more.

  612. And at

  613. the end

  614. of that

  615. day,

  616. in verse

  617. 17,

  618. Ruth

  619. gleaned

  620. about an

  621. ephah

  622. of barley.

  623. An

  624. ephah

  625. of barley

  626. is roughly

  627. 10 to

  628. 15 liters,

  629. which is

  630. 10 to

  631. 15 times

  632. more than

  633. one person's

  634. daily ration

  635. in those

  636. days.

  637. And if that

  638. wasn't enough,

  639. Boaz goes

  640. further.

  641. Because of

  642. his protection

  643. and favor

  644. upon Ruth,

  645. Ruth was

  646. able to

  647. safely glean

  648. through both

  649. the barley

  650. and the

  651. wheat harvest,

  652. which was

  653. about seven

  654. weeks.

  655. And therefore,

  656. at the end

  657. of seven

  658. weeks,

  659. she would

  660. have gleaned

  661. about eight

  662. months worth

  663. of food.

  664. What favor?

  665. What blessing?

  666. At the

  667. beginning of

  668. Ruth chapter

  669. two,

  670. Ruth went

  671. out to

  672. glean because

  673. she was

  674. hungry.

  675. She had

  676. no food.

  677. But by

  678. the end

  679. of the

  680. two months

  681. of gleaning,

  682. she had

  683. more than

  684. she needed

  685. because Boaz

  686. had abundantly

  687. sustained her.

  688. Look at

  689. Ruth's

  690. response.

  691. She says

  692. to Boaz

  693. in verse

  694. 10,

  695. Why have

  696. I found

  697. such favor

  698. in your

  699. eyes that

  700. you notice

  701. me, a

  702. foreigner?

  703. She is

  704. genuinely

  705. surprised at

  706. Boaz's

  707. kindness,

  708. confirming

  709. that Boaz

  710. has indeed

  711. given her

  712. so much

  713. more than

  714. she expected.

  715. And then

  716. later on

  717. in verse

  718. 13,

  719. she says,

  720. You have

  721. given me

  722. comfort,

  723. have spoken

  724. kindly to

  725. your servant,

  726. though I

  727. do not

  728. have the

  729. standing

  730. of one

  731. of your

  732. servant

  733. girls.

  734. Ruth

  735. comes to

  736. Boaz

  737. with such

  738. humility

  739. and no

  740. sense of

  741. entitlement.

  742. She never

  743. thinks she

  744. deserves

  745. favor.

  746. She never

  747. thinks she

  748. can earn

  749. favor.

  750. She

  751. recognized

  752. who she

  753. was,

  754. foreign

  755. widow,

  756. someone

  757. unworthy

  758. of even

  759. being called

  760. a servant

  761. girl,

  762. someone

  763. broken,

  764. someone in

  765. need of

  766. grace.

  767. And in

  768. verse 18,

  769. Ruth returns

  770. to Naomi.

  771. Naomi.

  772. You can

  773. imagine Naomi

  774. sitting there

  775. waiting for

  776. Ruth to

  777. return,

  778. unsure if

  779. Ruth would

  780. be successful

  781. that day

  782. in gleaning,

  783. unsure if

  784. God would

  785. provide,

  786. bitter,

  787. resentful

  788. against God

  789. for the

  790. predicament

  791. that she's

  792. in.

  793. But all

  794. of a sudden,

  795. Ruth returns

  796. home with

  797. this massive,

  798. huge bounty

  799. of barley,

  800. and she

  801. tells Naomi

  802. she has

  803. gleaned in

  804. Boaz's

  805. field.

  806. Naomi can't

  807. believe it.

  808. She tells

  809. Ruth,

  810. this man is

  811. our close

  812. relative.

  813. He is our

  814. kinsman

  815. redeemer.

  816. There is hope

  817. after all.

  818. Now,

  819. we'll be

  820. unpacking this

  821. very important

  822. concept of a

  823. kinsman

  824. redeemer or

  825. guardian

  826. redeemer in

  827. detail in the

  828. next two

  829. weeks, so

  830. you'll have to

  831. wait for that.

  832. But just to

  833. give you a

  834. quick preview,

  835. the concept

  836. of a kinsman

  837. redeemer was

  838. based upon

  839. the Jewish

  840. law.

  841. Under the

  842. law, male

  843. clan members

  844. had certain

  845. responsibilities

  846. towards their

  847. relatives.

  848. They had the

  849. responsibility

  850. to help out

  851. a fellow

  852. clan member

  853. who faced

  854. certain adverse

  855. circumstances.

  856. Two in

  857. particular.

  858. One, if a

  859. relative fell

  860. into extreme

  861. poverty such

  862. that he was

  863. forced to sell

  864. himself or

  865. his land to

  866. repay a debt,

  867. a kinsman

  868. redeemer, a

  869. relative, was

  870. expected to buy

  871. back the

  872. family member or

  873. buy back that

  874. land, whatever

  875. the case may

  876. be.

  877. And second, if

  878. a male relative

  879. died, the

  880. kinsman

  881. redeemer was

  882. expected to

  883. marry the

  884. widow to

  885. carry on the

  886. family name of

  887. the male

  888. relative.

  889. But as you

  890. can imagine,

  891. both of these

  892. things were

  893. costly.

  894. And Naomi

  895. recognized that

  896. Boaz was a

  897. relative of her

  898. dead husband,

  899. Elimelech, and

  900. therefore was one

  901. of her family's

  902. kinsman

  903. redeemers.

  904. You can sense

  905. the excitement

  906. and anticipation

  907. from Naomi.

  908. Could it be,

  909. could God be

  910. calling the

  911. kind and good

  912. man Boaz,

  913. our close

  914. relative, our

  915. kinsman

  916. redeemer, to

  917. redeem our land,

  918. to buy back

  919. our dignity, to

  920. carry on our

  921. family line, to

  922. save us?

  923. Maybe God is

  924. at work in our

  925. lives after all.

  926. Maybe Ruth

  927. happening to

  928. stumble upon

  929. Boaz's field

  930. wasn't random.

  931. Did you

  932. notice that

  933. in the entire

  934. chapter 2,

  935. there isn't

  936. even one

  937. instance of

  938. God intervening

  939. in an obvious

  940. supernatural

  941. way?

  942. God didn't

  943. speak audibly

  944. to Ruth

  945. or to Boaz

  946. like he did

  947. to Abraham.

  948. He didn't

  949. appear to them

  950. like he did

  951. to Moses

  952. in a burning

  953. bush.

  954. And yet,

  955. God was

  956. very much

  957. still at work.

  958. Of all the

  959. barley fields

  960. outside Bethlehem,

  961. God led

  962. Ruth to

  963. Boaz's field

  964. at the exact

  965. time Boaz

  966. showed up.

  967. Even though

  968. we don't

  969. audibly hear

  970. God's voice

  971. or we don't

  972. visibly see

  973. him in action,

  974. God's fingerprints

  975. are all over

  976. the narrative

  977. of Ruth.

  978. Proverbs

  979. 16.9

  980. says,

  981. I love this

  982. passage,

  983. a man's

  984. heart

  985. plans his

  986. ways,

  987. but the

  988. Lord directs

  989. his steps.

  990. I don't

  991. know about

  992. you this

  993. morning,

  994. but that

  995. verse is

  996. very comforting

  997. to me.

  998. I feel

  999. like

  1000. recently I've

  1001. had to

  1002. make so

  1003. many big

  1004. and small

  1005. decisions

  1006. about my

  1007. family,

  1008. my job,

  1009. a lot of

  1010. things going

  1011. on in my

  1012. life.

  1013. Recently we

  1014. decided to

  1015. move,

  1016. we decided

  1017. to send

  1018. Kiva to a

  1019. certain school,

  1020. so many

  1021. things going

  1022. on.

  1023. My day

  1024. job,

  1025. it's just

  1026. taken up

  1027. so much

  1028. of my

  1029. mental

  1030. capacity.

  1031. And on

  1032. top of

  1033. that,

  1034. my wife

  1035. and I

  1036. are expecting

  1037. twin boys.

  1038. Thank you.

  1039. Praise God.

  1040. We're very

  1041. excited about

  1042. this and feel

  1043. very,

  1044. very blessed.

  1045. But you

  1046. know,

  1047. with the

  1048. twin boys

  1049. coming,

  1050. to be honest,

  1051. I have more

  1052. questions than

  1053. answers.

  1054. I was talking

  1055. to my wife

  1056. the other day

  1057. and we're just

  1058. saying to each

  1059. other,

  1060. how are we

  1061. going to get

  1062. to church

  1063. on time

  1064. on Sunday?

  1065. How are we

  1066. going to get

  1067. anywhere on

  1068. time?

  1069. But you

  1070. know,

  1071. when I look

  1072. at Ruth,

  1073. I realize

  1074. God cares

  1075. about every

  1076. decision we

  1077. make.

  1078. He cares

  1079. about every

  1080. aspect of

  1081. our lives,

  1082. even the

  1083. mundane,

  1084. everyday

  1085. details.

  1086. I think

  1087. oftentimes we

  1088. think God

  1089. only cares

  1090. about the

  1091. really big

  1092. things in

  1093. our lives,

  1094. so therefore

  1095. we only

  1096. pray when

  1097. we're really

  1098. in trouble.

  1099. But when

  1100. we fail

  1101. to believe

  1102. God is

  1103. working in

  1104. the everyday

  1105. aspect,

  1106. everyday

  1107. aspects of

  1108. our lives,

  1109. we end up

  1110. complaining.

  1111. When we

  1112. fail to believe

  1113. God is

  1114. working,

  1115. we oftentimes

  1116. put more

  1117. undue

  1118. pressure on

  1119. ourselves to

  1120. do things

  1121. with our

  1122. own strength.

  1123. faith.

  1124. Or maybe

  1125. some of us

  1126. feel God

  1127. is so far

  1128. away,

  1129. he's up

  1130. in the

  1131. clouds,

  1132. and so

  1133. therefore we

  1134. lose hope

  1135. and we

  1136. drift away

  1137. from him,

  1138. from the

  1139. church,

  1140. from our

  1141. community

  1142. groups,

  1143. from reading

  1144. his word,

  1145. from pursuing

  1146. him.

  1147. But if we

  1148. look at

  1149. Ruth,

  1150. that morning

  1151. she seemed

  1152. to make a

  1153. mundane

  1154. decision to

  1155. go glean

  1156. for barley.

  1157. But God

  1158. honored that.

  1159. And God

  1160. was right

  1161. there,

  1162. directing her,

  1163. guiding her,

  1164. even in this

  1165. small decision.

  1166. And he led

  1167. her right

  1168. to Boaz,

  1169. where God

  1170. blessed Ruth

  1171. through Boaz.

  1172. When we

  1173. believe that

  1174. the sovereign

  1175. God of the

  1176. universe is in

  1177. control,

  1178. we don't worry

  1179. about our

  1180. decisions.

  1181. We don't worry

  1182. about the

  1183. outcomes.

  1184. We go through

  1185. our day

  1186. knowing that

  1187. he cares

  1188. about every

  1189. mundane

  1190. event and

  1191. our hearts

  1192. are at

  1193. peace because

  1194. he cares.

  1195. He cares

  1196. about that

  1197. conversation

  1198. you're having

  1199. tomorrow with

  1200. your boss.

  1201. He cares

  1202. about where

  1203. you're going

  1204. to send

  1205. your kids

  1206. to school.

  1207. He cares

  1208. about the

  1209. dinner you're

  1210. going to

  1211. have with

  1212. your in-laws.

  1213. I know

  1214. life in

  1215. Hong Kong

  1216. is often

  1217. a grind.

  1218. But be

  1219. encouraged that

  1220. God is not

  1221. just there in

  1222. the big

  1223. things.

  1224. He's there

  1225. in the

  1226. thousand

  1227. small moments

  1228. of every

  1229. single day

  1230. working in

  1231. our lives.

  1232. So as we've

  1233. seen in

  1234. Ruth chapter

  1235. two,

  1236. Boaz

  1237. was a

  1238. faithful man

  1239. of God,

  1240. a good

  1241. man,

  1242. a kind

  1243. man.

  1244. Remember,

  1245. Boaz was

  1246. merely a

  1247. man.

  1248. Boaz just

  1249. gives us a

  1250. glimpse of the

  1251. redeemer who

  1252. was to come

  1253. over a thousand

  1254. years later who

  1255. would redeem

  1256. not just one

  1257. family but the

  1258. world.

  1259. Boaz was just

  1260. a type and

  1261. shadow of the

  1262. greatest

  1263. redeemer,

  1264. Jesus Christ,

  1265. God himself,

  1266. who would

  1267. redeem mankind

  1268. from our

  1269. greatest tragedy,

  1270. our own

  1271. hearts,

  1272. our own

  1273. brokenness,

  1274. our own

  1275. fractured

  1276. nature.

  1277. You see,

  1278. in many ways,

  1279. you and I

  1280. were like

  1281. Ruth.

  1282. Ruth was not

  1283. a Jew.

  1284. She was a

  1285. Gentile.

  1286. When she first

  1287. came to Israel,

  1288. she was a

  1289. foreigner,

  1290. without rights,

  1291. without hope.

  1292. She was an

  1293. outcast,

  1294. looked down

  1295. upon by

  1296. society.

  1297. The

  1298. apostle Paul,

  1299. he writes in

  1300. Ephesians 2

  1301. that we too

  1302. are Gentiles

  1303. by birth

  1304. and that

  1305. before we

  1306. knew Christ,

  1307. we too

  1308. were excluded

  1309. from citizenship

  1310. in Israel,

  1311. foreigners to

  1312. the covenants

  1313. of promise,

  1314. without hope

  1315. and without

  1316. God in the

  1317. world.

  1318. Like Ruth,

  1319. without Christ,

  1320. you and I,

  1321. we too,

  1322. are broken.

  1323. We too are

  1324. in desperate

  1325. need of a

  1326. savior.

  1327. But unlike

  1328. Ruth,

  1329. we weren't

  1330. just struggling

  1331. with hunger.

  1332. We weren't

  1333. just victims

  1334. of our

  1335. relatives'

  1336. misfortune.

  1337. Before we

  1338. knew Christ,

  1339. you and I

  1340. were enemies

  1341. of God.

  1342. Every time

  1343. we said in

  1344. our hearts,

  1345. I want to

  1346. do this my

  1347. way,

  1348. I want to

  1349. be in

  1350. charge,

  1351. we are

  1352. guilty of

  1353. mocking

  1354. Christ,

  1355. of beating

  1356. him,

  1357. of setting

  1358. that crown

  1359. of thorns

  1360. upon his

  1361. head.

  1362. But we

  1363. have hope.

  1364. In that

  1365. same passage

  1366. from Ephesians,

  1367. Paul goes

  1368. on to say,

  1369. Paul goes

  1370. on to say,

  1371. but now

  1372. in Christ

  1373. Jesus,

  1374. you who

  1375. were once

  1376. far away

  1377. have been

  1378. brought near

  1379. through the

  1380. blood of

  1381. Christ.

  1382. Without

  1383. doing anything

  1384. on our own

  1385. accord,

  1386. without

  1387. justifying

  1388. ourselves,

  1389. we who

  1390. were once

  1391. far away

  1392. have been

  1393. brought near

  1394. to God

  1395. through the

  1396. blood of

  1397. Jesus Christ.

  1398. Ruth's

  1399. redeemer

  1400. was

  1401. Boaz,

  1402. but our

  1403. redeemer

  1404. is one

  1405. who is

  1406. far

  1407. greater.

  1408. Our

  1409. redeemer

  1410. is Christ

  1411. himself,

  1412. who is

  1413. seated at

  1414. the right

  1415. hand of

  1416. God

  1417. in heaven.

  1418. Boaz

  1419. protected

  1420. Ruth and

  1421. said to

  1422. her,

  1423. stay in

  1424. my fields.

  1425. And

  1426. remember,

  1427. in verse

  1428. 12,

  1429. he acknowledged

  1430. that Ruth

  1431. came to

  1432. Bethlehem

  1433. to seek

  1434. refuge under

  1435. the wings

  1436. of the

  1437. God

  1438. of

  1439. Israel.

  1440. What did

  1441. Christ say

  1442. about this?

  1443. In the

  1444. Gospels,

  1445. as Jesus

  1446. lamented how

  1447. his Jewish

  1448. brothers rejected

  1449. him as

  1450. their Messiah

  1451. and Savior,

  1452. Christ,

  1453. he cries

  1454. out in

  1455. Matthew 23,

  1456. he says,

  1457. how often

  1458. I long

  1459. to gather

  1460. your children

  1461. together as

  1462. a hen

  1463. gathers her

  1464. chicks under

  1465. her wings,

  1466. for you

  1467. were not

  1468. willing.

  1469. The

  1470. theologian

  1471. N.T.

  1472. Wright

  1473. said this,

  1474. he said,

  1475. this image

  1476. is of a

  1477. barnyard

  1478. fire.

  1479. When the

  1480. fire breaks

  1481. out,

  1482. the mother

  1483. hen would

  1484. gather her

  1485. chicks under

  1486. her wings

  1487. to protect

  1488. them.

  1489. But when

  1490. the fire

  1491. had run

  1492. its course,

  1493. there will

  1494. be found

  1495. a dead

  1496. hen,

  1497. scorched

  1498. and blackened.

  1499. but the

  1500. chicks will

  1501. be alive

  1502. and well

  1503. under her

  1504. wings.

  1505. It's a

  1506. picture of

  1507. Christ,

  1508. God in

  1509. flesh who

  1510. would protect

  1511. us under

  1512. his wings,

  1513. taking the

  1514. punishment

  1515. of death

  1516. for us,

  1517. even when

  1518. we had

  1519. rejected

  1520. him.

  1521. Now,

  1522. Boaz,

  1523. he accepted

  1524. Ruth at

  1525. his dining

  1526. table.

  1527. He welcomed

  1528. her,

  1529. he included

  1530. her.

  1531. But Christ

  1532. says,

  1533. my father

  1534. has prepared

  1535. a banquet

  1536. for you

  1537. in heaven

  1538. where we

  1539. will dine

  1540. together for

  1541. eternity.

  1542. Christ

  1543. says,

  1544. my father's

  1545. house has

  1546. many rooms

  1547. and I

  1548. am going

  1549. there to

  1550. prepare a

  1551. place for

  1552. you.

  1553. Christ

  1554. says,

  1555. you are

  1556. welcome,

  1557. you belong,

  1558. and he

  1559. says,

  1560. because of

  1561. me,

  1562. my father

  1563. sees you

  1564. as my

  1565. brother

  1566. and my

  1567. sister.

  1568. You are

  1569. my family.

  1570. Now,

  1571. Boaz

  1572. sustained

  1573. Ruth with

  1574. a huge

  1575. bounty of

  1576. barley.

  1577. He fed

  1578. her for

  1579. weeks and

  1580. months at

  1581. a big

  1582. cost to

  1583. himself.

  1584. Boaz

  1585. could have

  1586. sold that

  1587. barley for

  1588. money.

  1589. But Christ

  1590. sustains us

  1591. with his

  1592. very body.

  1593. Christ

  1594. says,

  1595. I am the

  1596. bread of

  1597. life,

  1598. and I

  1599. give you

  1600. my body

  1601. on the

  1602. cross.

  1603. I've

  1604. paid the

  1605. ultimate

  1606. price.

  1607. Boaz

  1608. was a

  1609. good

  1610. man.

  1611. You

  1612. could even

  1613. say he

  1614. was a

  1615. great

  1616. man.

  1617. But

  1618. Jesus

  1619. Christ

  1620. is a

  1621. hero of

  1622. this

  1623. story.

  1624. He

  1625. embodies

  1626. loving

  1627. kindness.

  1628. Jesus

  1629. Christ

  1630. is

  1631. loving

  1632. kindness.

  1633. So as

  1634. we close

  1635. Ruth

    Ruth 2 chapter mention

  1636. chapter 2,

  1637. let's

  1638. ask

  1639. ourselves

  1640. a

  1641. question.

  1642. How has

  1643. God called

  1644. us to

  1645. share his

  1646. loving

  1647. kindness to

  1648. those around

  1649. us?

  1650. As we've

  1651. seen this

  1652. morning,

  1653. God displayed

  1654. his kindness

  1655. to Ruth

  1656. through Boaz.

  1657. Ruth,

  1658. the Moabitess

  1659. widow,

  1660. Gentile,

  1661. an outsider

  1662. in Israel.

  1663. She saw

  1664. the kindness

  1665. of God

  1666. through this

  1667. God-fearing

  1668. man,

  1669. Boaz.

  1670. So,

  1671. who are

  1672. the Ruths

  1673. around us?

  1674. Who are

  1675. the outsiders?

  1676. And how

  1677. will they

  1678. experience

  1679. the kindness

  1680. of God?

  1681. There are

  1682. people around

  1683. us every

  1684. single day,

  1685. even right

  1686. here at

  1687. church on

  1688. Sunday,

  1689. that the

  1690. world would

  1691. judge as

  1692. outsiders.

  1693. others.

  1694. But let's

  1695. ask ourselves,

  1696. can Watermark

  1697. Community Church

  1698. be a place

  1699. that welcomes

  1700. all peoples,

  1701. all nations,

  1702. all demographics?

  1703. Can our

  1704. Sunday service,

  1705. our CGs,

  1706. be a place

  1707. where every

  1708. man and

  1709. every woman

  1710. is equally

  1711. shown the

  1712. kindness of

  1713. God?

  1714. God?

  1715. Jeremy and

  1716. Soda talked

  1717. about social

  1718. justice earlier.

  1719. out there

  1720. in the city,

  1721. there are

  1722. so many

  1723. people crying

  1724. out for

  1725. the kindness

  1726. of God.

  1727. There are

  1728. so many

  1729. pockets of

  1730. society here

  1731. in Hong Kong

  1732. that struggle

  1733. economically or

  1734. socially.

  1735. Think about

  1736. the women

  1737. that work in

  1738. the red light

  1739. districts,

  1740. minorities that

  1741. have few

  1742. rights,

  1743. the elderly,

  1744. the widows,

  1745. the orphans,

  1746. single mothers.

  1747. As Christ

  1748. followers,

  1749. God has

  1750. called us to

  1751. care for

  1752. and to

  1753. show kindness

  1754. to these

  1755. people.

  1756. Otherwise,

  1757. how are they

  1758. going to

  1759. receive kindness?

  1760. You see,

  1761. when we

  1762. truly understand

  1763. the kindness

  1764. of Christ,

  1765. when the

  1766. truth of

  1767. Christ's

  1768. sacrifice,

  1769. pain,

  1770. what he

  1771. went through

  1772. for us on

  1773. the cross,

  1774. when that is

  1775. so deeply

  1776. rooted in

  1777. our hearts,

  1778. then we can

  1779. show kindness

  1780. to the people

  1781. around us,

  1782. just like

  1783. Ruth showed

  1784. kindness to

  1785. Naomi,

  1786. and Boaz

  1787. showed kindness

  1788. to Ruth.

  1789. Ordinary people

  1790. living faithful,

  1791. extraordinary lives.

  1792. God using

  1793. faithful people

  1794. to show his

  1795. kindness to

  1796. the world.

  1797. So this week,

  1798. as you go about

  1799. your daily lives,

  1800. at home with

  1801. your families,

  1802. at work,

  1803. when you meet

  1804. strangers on

  1805. the street or

  1806. in the MTR,

  1807. can you allow

  1808. God to

  1809. display his

  1810. kindness

  1811. through you?

  1812. Let's pray.

  1813. Father, we do

  1814. thank you for

  1815. your word,

  1816. which is living,

  1817. which is active,

  1818. and powerful.

  1819. Father, I pray

  1820. that as we

  1821. receive your

  1822. message,

  1823. as we receive

  1824. your word,

  1825. and as we

  1826. digest it

  1827. this week,

  1828. Lord,

  1829. I pray,

  1830. Father,

  1831. that at first,

  1832. Lord,

  1833. we would see

  1834. our own

  1835. brokenness,

  1836. Father,

  1837. our own need

  1838. of you.

  1839. You would see

  1840. how we're like

  1841. Ruth.

  1842. Before we knew

  1843. you,

  1844. we were a

  1845. foreigner,

  1846. to your

  1847. kingdom.

  1848. But,

  1849. Father,

  1850. through the

  1851. blood of

  1852. Christ,

  1853. through his

  1854. sacrifice,

  1855. through the

  1856. cross,

  1857. we have been

  1858. brought near

  1859. to God.

  1860. And I pray,

  1861. Lord,

  1862. that as we

  1863. think about

  1864. and meditate

  1865. upon the

  1866. kindness

  1867. that we see

  1868. in this

  1869. passage

  1870. that Boaz

  1871. has shown

  1872. to Ruth,

  1873. I pray,

  1874. Father,

  1875. that we'll just

  1876. see the

  1877. kindness of

  1878. God through

  1879. that.

  1880. infinitely

  1881. greater

  1882. than the

  1883. kindness

  1884. that Boaz,

  1885. that good

  1886. man,

  1887. showed to

  1888. Ruth.

  1889. And I

  1890. pray,

  1891. Lord,

  1892. that we'll

  1893. just see

  1894. the beauty

  1895. of Christ,

  1896. that we'll

  1897. be more

  1898. in awe

  1899. of him.

  1900. God,

  1901. that we'll

  1902. do it.

  1903. And I

  1904. pray,

  1905. Father,

  1906. that as we

  1907. go out

  1908. into Hong

  1909. Kong during

  1910. this week,

  1911. wherever we

  1912. are,

  1913. Lord,

  1914. Monday to

  1915. Friday to

  1916. Saturday,

  1917. I pray,

  1918. Father,

  1919. that you

  1920. would use

  1921. us to

  1922. show your

  1923. kindness to

  1924. those around

  1925. us,

  1926. Lord,

  1927. in every

  1928. situation,

  1929. Father.

  1930. And,

  1931. Lord,

  1932. for some

  1933. of us,

  1934. that's

  1935. difficult.

  1936. that's a

  1937. challenge.

  1938. Sometimes,

  1939. Lord,

  1940. I admit,

  1941. it's hard

  1942. to be kind

  1943. to those

  1944. that are

  1945. not kind

  1946. to me.

  1947. But then

  1948. I look at

  1949. Christ,

  1950. and I

  1951. see,

  1952. on the

  1953. cross,

  1954. on the

  1955. cross,

  1956. that you

  1957. were beaten,

  1958. Lord Jesus.

  1959. You were

  1960. mocked,

  1961. you were

  1962. whipped,

  1963. you bled

  1964. for me,

  1965. God.

  1966. You showed

  1967. me,

  1968. you showed

  1969. all of us

  1970. ultimate

  1971. loving kindness

  1972. through what

  1973. you did.

  1974. And I pray,

  1975. God,

  1976. that we would

  1977. receive that

  1978. message today,

  1979. Lord,

  1980. and we would

  1981. go out into

  1982. Hong Kong

  1983. and to show

  1984. your loving

  1985. kindness

  1986. to those

  1987. around us,

  1988. to those

  1989. you have

  1990. placed in

  1991. our lives.

  1992. In your

  1993. name we pray.

  1994. Amen.
