  1. Let's pray together as we look at God's Word this morning.

  2. Father, we come before you and we are thankful for your Word, your Word which gives life,

  3. your Word which tells us about you, and your Word which reveals the wonder of salvation

  4. and the wonder of the God that so many of us have come to know and love.

  5. Father, this morning we pray that as we look at your Word, you will speak to us.

  6. And we pray, Holy Spirit, that you'll take the words on these pages and you'll apply it to our hearts.

  7. God, won't you cause us to love you more and to trust you more, to obey you more and to fear you more

  8. because of your Word this morning.

  9. Bring this time before you in your wonderful name.

  10. Amen.

  11. Amen.

  12. Okay.

  13. So this morning we come to the end of our study of the book of Ruth, the Old Testament book.

  14. And for me personally, it has been such a wonderful journey.

  15. And I hope it has for you too.

  16. It's been challenging studying the book of Ruth, trying to get my head around some things.

  17. As Leah was saying, I'm sure there have been some fiery discussions in the CG.

  18. But over the last few weeks as we've been going through the book of Ruth,

  19. two lines have stood out to me.

  20. The one is found in Ruth chapter 2 where Boaz says to Ruth,

    Ruth 2 chapter mention

  21. And then in chapter 3, Ruth almost demonstrates what that means when she goes to Boaz and she says,

  22. Boaz, spread the wings of your garment over me.

  23. And I found myself over the last few weeks saying,

  24. God, won't you make me a person that comes to take refuge and safety and security under the shadow of your wings.

  25. Won't you spread your arms over me.

  26. God, make me someone that comes to find my identity and my rest in you.

  27. And I hope it's been encouraging for us as a church as well.

  28. Now let's just recap the story for those of us that maybe have missed parts of it or some of it.

  29. The story goes like this.

  30. In Ruth chapter 1, we meet this family.

    Ruth 1 chapter mention

  31. Elimelech and his wife Naomi and their two sons, Marlon and Chilian.

  32. And they leave Israel because there's famine in the land of Israel.

  33. They go up north to the country of Moab.

  34. And this all takes place in what we are told is the time of the judges,

  35. which was a very ungodly time in the nation of Israel.

  36. It's a time when everybody did what was right in their own eyes,

  37. which meant that nobody did what was right.

  38. And so they leave Israel.

  39. They go to Moab.

  40. And Moab is an even more ungodly place.

  41. And in Moab, tragedy strikes.

  42. First, Elimelech dies.

  43. And then Naomi's two sons marry a local Moabite woman.

  44. And then the two sons die.

  45. And so Naomi, an Israelite, is in a foreign land, foreign country,

  46. with no land of her own, no sons, no husband,

  47. no one to farm the land or to go and work in the fields.

  48. And she's left with no security, just her two foreign daughter-in-laws.

  49. And so Naomi, the one day, hears that the famine in Israel has broken.

  50. And so she decides to go back to Judah, to Bethlehem.

  51. And Ruth, the one daughter-in-law, decides to come with her.

  52. The other decides to stay.

  53. When Ruth and Naomi come back to Bethlehem in Israel,

  54. they've got land which belongs to the family,

  55. but the land hasn't been worked for decades.

  56. And so it's lying fallow.

  57. And so Ruth says, I better go out and find some work.

  58. And so Ruth goes and works in the field of a man called Boaz,

  59. who unbeknownst to her is a very godly man,

  60. but he's also a relative of her late husband, Marlon.

  61. And she just so happens to work in the field of this relative, Boaz.

  62. And Boaz is incredibly kind to her.

  63. He says to her, stay close to me.

  64. I will look after you.

  65. Don't go wandering away.

  66. I will do you good.

  67. And Boaz is incredibly kind.

  68. He's generous to her.

  69. He lavishly blesses her.

  70. And so at the end of chapter one,

  71. Naomi, when they come back, say, I've come back empty.

  72. God has been bitter to me.

  73. God has dealt unfairly with me.

  74. I've got nothing left.

  75. And just one day later at the end of chapter two,

  76. because of Boaz's kindness,

  77. Ruth and Naomi are now overflowing with provisions, with food.

  78. And so they come to a place where they say,

  79. God has been kind to us because of this man, Boaz.

  80. Now, key to understanding the book of Ruth

  81. is to understand the ancient Hebrew practice of redemption,

  82. of redeeming a widow.

  83. And the way it worked was like this.

  84. If somebody in Israel fell on hard times,

  85. maybe your husband died or you got into excessive debt,

  86. the closest male relative, called the kinsman redeemer,

  87. it is his obligation to buy you out of your tragic situation,

  88. even at great personal cost to himself,

  89. and to look after you.

  90. So for instance, if a man dies,

  91. his wife is left a widow,

  92. maybe with children or no children,

  93. this kinsman redeemer,

  94. this family relative,

  95. would buy the family land,

  96. but marry this widow to do three things.

  97. One, to look after her and provide for her.

  98. Two, to look after the family land.

  99. Land, remember, was a family safety and security.

  100. In those days, you didn't have RAs and pension funds.

  101. Your land was your provision.

  102. But three, the redeemer would marry this widow

  103. and then have children with her

  104. in order to continue the name.

  105. The children would be in the late husband's name

  106. so that his family line wouldn't die out

  107. but would continue.

  108. Okay?

  109. And so this was the obligation

  110. of the closest male relative,

  111. the kinsman redeemer.

  112. So at the end of chapter two,

  113. Ruth, after working in Boaz's field,

  114. comes back to her mother-in-law, Naomi,

  115. and Naomi says,

  116. where did you work today?

  117. And she says,

  118. I worked in the field of Boaz.

  119. And Naomi says,

  120. Boaz, that man's a close relative of ours.

  121. And her mind starts to think,

  122. I wonder if this man can redeem us.

  123. And so then in chapter three,

  124. we saw that last week,

  125. Boaz takes notice of Ruth.

  126. She's a good-looking young lady.

  127. And he spots her out,

  128. but he doesn't make any moves on her

  129. because Ruth is still wearing the mourning gear.

  130. She's mourning her late husband.

  131. And Naomi says to Ruth,

  132. it's time to put away your mourning clothes.

  133. It's time to prepare yourself for marriage.

  134. And Naomi realizes that Ruth needs

  135. not just Boaz's kindness,

  136. she needs his love.

  137. What Ruth needs is not just Boaz's provision,

  138. she needs his loving protection.

  139. And so Naomi prepares her daughter-in-law

  140. and then at great risk to herself,

  141. Ruth, in the middle of night,

  142. goes to Boaz and she says,

  143. marry me.

  144. In this great act of vulnerability

  145. and surrender and submission,

  146. she goes to Boaz and says,

  147. you are my Redeemer.

  148. You are my rescuer.

  149. Marry me.

  150. Redeem me with your love.

  151. And we saw that in many ways,

  152. this is what it means to be a Christian.

  153. A Christian is someone

  154. who has recognized their emptiness,

  155. recognized their need for a Savior,

  156. recognized their need for redemption,

  157. and come to the great Redeemer, Christ,

  158. and says,

  159. God, marry me.

  160. Rescue me.

  161. Redeem me with your love.

  162. And so at the end of chapter three,

  163. Ruth comes to Boaz in the middle of the night

  164. and says,

  165. rescue me.

  166. Redeem me with your great love.

  167. And Boaz says,

  168. absolutely.

  169. He's noticed Ruth, right?

  170. He says,

  171. sure thing.

  172. Tomorrow I'm going to make it happen.

  173. Except there's a problem.

  174. And the problem is,

  175. there's another guy.

  176. I know that feeling.

  177. When I first noticed Claire,

  178. there was another guy.

  179. And I had to get rid of him.

  180. He's still alive.

  181. I didn't get rid of him like that.

  182. He's still alive.

  183. So Ruth and Boaz

  184. kind of make this arrangement.

  185. Okay.

  186. We want to get married.

  187. But there's another guy.

  188. There's another family relative,

  189. a closer relative

  190. that has first rights

  191. on redeeming Ruth.

  192. And so Boaz says,

  193. tomorrow I'll go and talk to him

  194. and let's see if we can arrange it.

  195. And that's where chapter three ends.

  196. And so today we get to Ruth chapter four.

  197. Now today's passage,

  198. there's three things I think

  199. we're going to see.

  200. Three things to learn.

  201. We're going to learn that God's ways

  202. are counterintuitive.

  203. God's ways are grounded in grace.

  204. And God's ways are all inclusive.

  205. Okay.

  206. Counterintuitive,

  207. grounded in grace,

  208. and all inclusive.

  209. So first thing,

  210. God's ways are counterintuitive.

  211. Now chapter four starts off

  212. with Boaz going down

  213. to the city gates.

  214. This is where business

  215. and civil affairs

  216. and transactions take place.

  217. And so Boaz goes down

  218. to the city gates

  219. to meet this redeemer,

  220. this family relative, right?

  221. And look at verse one with me.

  222. What does verse one say?

  223. It says,

  224. Boaz went to the gates

  225. and he sat down.

  226. And behold,

  227. the redeemer of whom

  228. Boaz had spoken

  229. came by.

  230. So Boaz said to him,

  231. turn aside,

  232. my friend.

  233. Sit down here.

  234. And he turned aside

  235. and he sat down.

  236. Now quick question.

  237. This other redeemer,

  238. what is his name?

  239. Anyone know?

  240. You shouldn't know

  241. because nobody knows his name.

  242. In fact,

  243. the man that wrote

  244. the book of Ruth

  245. a couple of decades later

  246. doesn't even know his name.

  247. His name is lost

  248. for all eternity.

  249. In fact,

  250. in the original Hebrew,

  251. it actually says,

  252. such a person.

  253. It's kind of like,

  254. it says,

  255. Boaz says to him,

  256. turn aside,

  257. such a person.

  258. It's kind of like

  259. this catch-out phrase.

  260. They don't know

  261. what to call him.

  262. It's like Mr. So-and-so.

  263. Or I guess you'd say like,

  264. sit down, Guilo.

  265. You know,

  266. it's like,

  267. it's just this,

  268. I don't know

  269. if that's offensive,

  270. but it's like

  271. this kind of phrase

  272. that we don't know

  273. what to call him.

  274. He's just this

  275. Mr. So-and-so,

  276. right?

  277. And so Mr. So-and-so

  278. comes along

  279. and Boaz explains to him

  280. that Naomi,

  281. who's returned from Moab,

  282. is selling her land

  283. that belonged

  284. to her husband,

  285. Elimelech,

  286. and that he,

  287. Mr. So-and-so,

  288. is the nearest relative

  289. and has the first rights

  290. to buy it

  291. and to redeem it.

  292. Now,

  293. Boaz doesn't mention Ruth,

  294. right?

  295. He just talks about the land.

  296. And so this relative,

  297. Mr. So-and-so,

  298. says,

  299. sure,

  300. sounds great.

  301. I would like to buy the land.

  302. Count me in.

  303. And at that point,

  304. Boaz's heart drops,

  305. right?

  306. He loves Ruth.

  307. Ruth loves him.

  308. Ruth doesn't want to marry

  309. Mr. So-and-so.

  310. Ruth wants to marry Boaz.

  311. And so at that point,

  312. he's like,

  313. ah,

  314. I was hoping

  315. it wasn't going to work out.

  316. And here's this guy

  317. that's messed up

  318. their whole plans.

  319. And so then Boaz

  320. very gently reminds him

  321. and says,

  322. well,

  323. the day that you

  324. buy the land,

  325. you also get to inherit,

  326. you also get to marry

  327. Ruth,

  328. the Moabite.

  329. Now,

  330. you see what's going on here?

  331. Mr. So-and-so,

  332. when he redeems

  333. Naomi's land

  334. and property,

  335. he also gets

  336. to marry the widow

  337. in order to protect her,

  338. but in order to

  339. perpetuate the name

  340. of the late husband

  341. so that his line

  342. will continue.

  343. Now,

  344. Naomi is too old

  345. to be married

  346. and to have children,

  347. and so Ruth

  348. will now become

  349. this man's wife

  350. in order to continue

  351. the family line.

  352. And so Boaz

  353. reminds this Mr. So-and-so

  354. about Ruth

  355. and suddenly

  356. he starts to back off.

  357. He says,

  358. ah,

  359. actually,

  360. I just forgot.

  361. I ran out of money

  362. and I would love to,

  363. but it's not going to work out,

  364. right?

  365. He starts to backtrack a bit

  366. and he says,

  367. but you marry him.

  368. And Boaz jumps to it

  369. and says,

  370. I would love to.

  371. Now,

  372. why does Mr. So-and-so

  373. back off?

  374. Why does he not want

  375. to marry Ruth?

  376. Well,

  377. he tells us.

  378. He tells us what happens.

  379. He says,

  380. I don't want to impair

  381. my own inheritance.

  382. And the way it worked

  383. was like this.

  384. Remember in the nation

  385. of Israel,

  386. there's this law

  387. called the law of Jubilee,

  388. right?

  389. So every 50 years,

  390. all the land

  391. that was sold,

  392. any transactions

  393. had to be returned

  394. to the family of origin

  395. every 50 years.

  396. And the reason this happened

  397. was so that to stop

  398. the rich getting richer

  399. and the poor getting poorer.

  400. So if you fall

  401. in difficult times,

  402. you can sell some land,

  403. but rather than people

  404. taking advantage of that,

  405. every 50 years,

  406. all the land is returned

  407. to the family of origin.

  408. So when this man

  409. buys Naomi's land,

  410. he knows that,

  411. hey,

  412. in a couple of years' time,

  413. maybe 20 years

  414. or 30 years

  415. or 40 years,

  416. the land is going

  417. to be returned

  418. to the family.

  419. If I take the land

  420. and I marry Ruth

  421. and we have children,

  422. these children belong

  423. to Elimelech,

  424. that family line,

  425. this land will be returned

  426. to them.

  427. So he buys the land,

  428. but not forever,

  429. just for a time period.

  430. But he takes on two women,

  431. Ruth and Naomi,

  432. forever.

  433. And so in a sense,

  434. his estate,

  435. his wealth,

  436. now needs to support

  437. these extra people,

  438. but he doesn't get

  439. the land forever.

  440. And so when he has

  441. children with Ruth,

  442. now his inheritance

  443. is no longer split,

  444. let's say,

  445. three ways

  446. with his children

  447. and now might be

  448. split five ways

  449. or six ways

  450. or seven ways.

  451. And so he realizes

  452. my inheritance

  453. is going to be diluted.

  454. But furthermore,

  455. he realizes

  456. that he's going

  457. to create children

  458. not in his own name,

  459. but in the name

  460. of Ruth's late husband,

  461. Elimelech and Marlon,

  462. right?

  463. And so he starts

  464. to back off.

  465. He says,

  466. no thanks,

  467. you marry her.

  468. Now in the nation

  469. of Israel at the time,

  470. there was a law,

  471. well actually not

  472. at the time,

  473. in the Bible

  474. there's this law

  475. that if a lady

  476. was widowed,

  477. she goes to her

  478. kinsman redeemer,

  479. this relative,

  480. and says,

  481. marry me,

  482. protect me,

  483. cover me with your wings,

  484. put your redeeming love

  485. around me.

  486. And he says,

  487. no.

  488. Then she takes him

  489. down to the city gates

  490. and once again

  491. in front of all the elders

  492. and the leaders,

  493. she says,

  494. this man is my redeemer,

  495. I'm asking him

  496. to marry me.

  497. And if he still refused,

  498. she takes off his sandal,

  499. she slaps him

  500. and then she spits

  501. in his face,

  502. okay?

  503. That was the law.

  504. And the reason was

  505. because it was

  506. considered

  507. extremely offensive.

  508. It was extremely selfish

  509. not to care

  510. for your family member,

  511. not to look after

  512. your family member.

  513. So Mr. So-and-so

  514. says no

  515. and he says no

  516. because he wants

  517. to protect

  518. his own inheritance

  519. and he wants

  520. to protect

  521. his own family

  522. and he wants

  523. to protect

  524. his own name.

  525. Now look what happens here.

  526. Three and a half thousand

  527. years later,

  528. whose name

  529. do we remember?

  530. whose name

  531. is recorded

  532. under the inspiration

  533. of the Holy Spirit

  534. for all time

  535. in the Bible?

  536. Not Mr. So-and-so,

  537. nobody knows his name.

  538. And yet,

  539. Boaz,

  540. this man who does

  541. the exact opposite,

  542. the man who marries Ruth,

  543. what does he say?

  544. In order to perpetuate

  545. the name of the dead,

  546. Boaz who marries Ruth

  547. knowing that her children

  548. will technically

  549. not carry his name

  550. but carry the name

  551. of her late husband,

  552. Boaz who gives up

  553. his own reputation

  554. and marries Ruth

  555. to protect her

  556. and care for her

  557. and make children

  558. in the line of Marlon

  559. and Elimlich's family,

  560. his name is recorded

  561. for all time

  562. in the scriptures.

  563. Now friends,

  564. this is the way

  565. that God's,

  566. this is the way

  567. of God's ways.

  568. This is the way

  569. that God works.

  570. This is the upside down

  571. nature of God's ways

  572. in the world.

  573. That those who try

  574. to save their lives

  575. end up losing them.

  576. Those who try

  577. to save their name

  578. end up losing them.

  579. Dietrich Bonhoeffer

  580. said it like this,

  581. the gospel tells us

  582. that the infinite worth

  583. of that which seems

  584. so worthless

  585. and the infinite worthlessness

  586. of everything

  587. that is seemingly

  588. so valuable.

  589. And this is the way

  590. of God.

  591. This is the way

  592. of the Bible.

  593. Throughout the whole story

  594. of the Bible,

  595. those who try

  596. to save themselves

  597. end up losing themselves.

  598. And those who say,

  599. God it's not about me,

  600. have your way,

  601. actually end up

  602. saving themselves.

  603. We see this

  604. in the book of Genesis,

  605. right?

  606. Right in the beginning,

  607. Adam and Eve

  608. are in the garden

  609. with God's presence

  610. and the devil comes to them

  611. and says,

  612. you want to be like God,

  613. don't you?

  614. I know God said,

  615. don't do this,

  616. but God doesn't really

  617. want you to be powerful

  618. and majestic.

  619. Listen to me.

  620. You eat that fruit,

  621. you will be made like God.

  622. What do they want to do?

  623. They want to be like God.

  624. And so they eat the fruit

  625. and they listen.

  626. And what happens?

  627. They end up being

  628. expelled from God's presence,

  629. expelled from God's paradise.

  630. And the end is death

  631. and destruction.

  632. They sought to be like God

  633. and they ended up

  634. losing God entirely.

  635. A couple of chapters later,

  636. the people of God

  637. decide to build

  638. this massive tower

  639. to heaven.

  640. They're going to build

  641. this tower

  642. to the praise of their name

  643. and to their own glory.

  644. And what happens?

  645. The result is tribalism,

  646. racism,

  647. death,

  648. and destruction.

  649. And all throughout the Bible,

  650. throughout the Old Testament

  651. and the New Testament,

  652. whenever the people of God

  653. try to save their lives,

  654. try to pursue their own glory,

  655. try to live for themselves,

  656. the result is always

  657. death and destruction.

  658. And whenever the people of God

  659. in humility

  660. would come and say,

  661. God, not my way,

  662. would come and die

  663. to themselves,

  664. say, Father,

  665. have your way.

  666. In that place,

  667. they found life.

  668. And we see this

  669. in our own lives,

  670. don't we?

  671. We see this in our marriages.

  672. We see this in our parenting.

  673. You want a happy marriage?

  674. The secret is,

  675. not my will,

  676. but your will.

  677. Love, right?

  678. Anyone that tries

  679. in their marriage

  680. to say,

  681. hey,

  682. fight for their own will,

  683. fight for their way,

  684. ends up losing it.

  685. But when you come and say,

  686. not about me,

  687. about you,

  688. let's have your way,

  689. that's the way

  690. to find a happy marriage.

  691. And friends,

  692. this is the way of God.

  693. This is the counterintuitive

  694. nature of God,

  695. that those who try

  696. and hold on

  697. and find their life

  698. actually end up losing it.

  699. And of course,

  700. the greatest expression

  701. of this

  702. is found

  703. in the carpenter.

  704. The man who came

  705. from Bethlehem.

  706. The man who was born

  707. to a teenage mom,

  708. born in the back

  709. waters of Israel,

  710. born in an animal

  711. feeding trough

  712. in a stable.

  713. The man who was born

  714. to die.

  715. The man who came

  716. to lay down his life

  717. so that we could live.

  718. Jesus said,

  719. all who try

  720. to hang on

  721. to their lives,

  722. their reputation

  723. and their pride

  724. will end up losing it.

  725. But if you come to me,

  726. if you trust me,

  727. if you come open-handed,

  728. you'll find,

  729. you'll find life.

  730. You'll gain your life.

  731. And friends,

  732. what is true for us

  733. was equally true

  734. for Jesus.

  735. That Jesus who came

  736. to lay down his life

  737. ended up getting life.

  738. But the difference is

  739. where we lay down

  740. our lives,

  741. we find our lives.

  742. Jesus died

  743. not so that he could

  744. find life,

  745. but that we could

  746. find life.

  747. This is the ways

  748. of God.

  749. Friends,

  750. this is the good news

  751. of Jesus.

  752. And this is what

  753. the Bible is all about.

  754. That though we have

  755. fallen short

  756. of God's standards,

  757. though we've fallen

  758. short of the wonder

  759. of Jesus and who he is,

  760. though our loves

  761. are distorted

  762. and we follow

  763. other gods,

  764. Jesus came to lay down

  765. his life for creation.

  766. And he tells us

  767. to do the same.

  768. He tells us

  769. not to live for ourselves,

  770. but to say,

  771. not to us,

  772. oh God,

  773. but to your name

  774. give the glory.

  775. And in that place

  776. we find life.

  777. And this is what we see

  778. with Boaz

  779. and Mr. So-and-so.

  780. Mr. So-and-so,

  781. this man,

  782. tried to protect

  783. his own reputation

  784. and in the end

  785. lost it.

  786. And Boaz,

  787. who gives it up,

  788. his name is preserved

  789. for all time.

  790. First point,

  791. the counterintuitive

  792. ways of God.

  793. Second thing is this.

  794. The thing that we see

  795. is that God's ways

  796. are grounded

  797. in grace.

  798. Grounded in grace.

  799. Now,

  800. when we listen

  801. to the first point,

  802. you might be tempted

  803. to think,

  804. okay,

  805. I get it.

  806. I understand

  807. the way it works.

  808. Those who deny

  809. themselves,

  810. those who punish

  811. themselves,

  812. those who make

  813. themselves lowly,

  814. earn God's love

  815. and acceptance,

  816. right?

  817. So you might be tempted

  818. to think,

  819. I know how to get

  820. God's love and acceptance.

  821. I've got to deny myself.

  822. I've got to punish myself.

  823. I've got to fast

  824. and I've got to

  825. go through hardship.

  826. And if I do that,

  827. God will reward me

  828. with good life.

  829. But look at what

  830. happens next.

  831. Mr. So-and-so says,

  832. sorry,

  833. I don't want,

  834. you know,

  835. Ruth anymore.

  836. You take it.

  837. Boaz says,

  838. I would love her.

  839. And so they get married.

  840. And they get married

  841. and they live happily

  842. ever after.

  843. Okay?

  844. And the Lord blesses

  845. them with a son.

  846. Now look what happens

  847. in verse 13 to 17.

  848. Naomi,

  849. not Ruth,

  850. is called

  851. blessed by the Lord.

  852. And Naomi

  853. is the one

  854. that the townsfolk

  855. say is redeemed.

  856. And in verse 17,

  857. it said of Naomi,

  858. she has a son.

  859. Now remember,

  860. this son,

  861. called Obed,

  862. has none

  863. of Naomi's blood

  864. in it.

  865. Right?

  866. Remember,

  867. it's the son

  868. of Ruth and Boaz.

  869. Ruth is not

  870. Naomi's descendant.

  871. She's her daughter-in-law.

  872. Boaz is not

  873. Naomi's descendant.

  874. This is a relative

  875. of her late husband.

  876. So their son

  877. has zero

  878. of Naomi's blood

  879. in it.

  880. And yet,

  881. the townsfolk say,

  882. a son has been

  883. born to Naomi.

  884. And later on,

  885. in verse 15,

  886. this grandson,

  887. which is actually

  888. a step-grandson,

  889. is said to Naomi,

  890. he says,

  891. he will be

  892. a restorer of life

  893. and a nourisher

  894. of your old age.

  895. So Naomi,

  896. who came back

  897. in chapter 1

  898. saying,

  899. God has been

  900. unfair to me.

  901. God has dealt

  902. bitterly with me.

  903. God has given me

  904. nothing.

  905. I went away full

  906. and I've come back

  907. empty.

  908. Now,

  909. this Naomi

  910. is given

  911. a grandson

  912. who is told

  913. that this son,

  914. this grandson,

  915. will nourish you

  916. in your old age,

  917. will restore

  918. your life to you.

  919. And remember,

  920. she comes back

  921. and Ruth is

  922. standing next to her

  923. and she says,

  924. I've got nothing.

  925. God has taken

  926. everything from me.

  927. And as Chris

  928. reminded us

  929. three weeks ago,

  930. Ruth is standing

  931. right next to her

  932. as if to say,

  933. Ruth is nothing to me.

  934. And now look at

  935. how the townsfolk

  936. speak of Ruth.

  937. They say,

  938. Ruth,

  939. your daughter-in-law

  940. who loves you,

  941. who has become

  942. more to you

  943. than seven sons.

  944. That's quite a statement

  945. in a culture

  946. that pries

  947. the birth of sons,

  948. right?

  949. And so here

  950. is God's amazing

  951. blessing to Naomi.

  952. Now,

  953. in the book of Ruth,

  954. Naomi is quite

  955. a tricky character,

  956. right?

  957. If you've been following

  958. the last few weeks,

  959. it's like,

  960. it's hard to get

  961. your hands on Naomi.

  962. Is Naomi good

  963. or is she bad?

  964. Is she faithful

  965. or is she a schemer?

  966. Is she deceptive?

  967. What's going on

  968. with Naomi?

  969. It's kind of like,

  970. it's hard to get

  971. our hands on her,

  972. right?

  973. And I think

  974. the truth is

  975. that Naomi

  976. is conflicted.

  977. There's a part

  978. of her

  979. that wants

  980. to trust God

  981. and there's a part

  982. of her

  983. that also wants

  984. what's good

  985. for her,

  986. right?

  987. There's a part

  988. of her

  989. that wants

  990. to be faithful

  991. and kind of

  992. wants to serve God

  993. but there's a part

  994. of her

  995. that also wants

  996. to organize

  997. things that work

  998. out well

  999. for her own life.

  1000. In a sense,

  1001. Naomi is quite

  1002. a conflicted

  1003. human being.

  1004. Friends,

  1005. if we're honest

  1006. with ourselves,

  1007. though we more

  1008. readily like to

  1009. associate with Ruth,

  1010. the beautiful,

  1011. young,

  1012. obedient,

  1013. attractive young lady,

  1014. if we're honest

  1015. with ourselves,

  1016. we're probably far

  1017. closer to Naomi

1018. than we are to Ruth,

  1019. right?

  1020. If we're honest

  1021. with ourselves,

  1022. we're all a little

  1023. conflicted.

  1024. If you're a follower

  1025. of Jesus this morning,

  1026. there's enough goodness

  1027. inside of you,

  1028. there's enough of the

1029. Holy Spirit inside of you

1030. to want to please God

1031. and to want to honor Him

  1032. but if we're honest

  1033. with ourselves,

  1034. there's also enough

  1035. selfishness,

  1036. there's enough self-love,

  1037. there's enough self-glory

  1038. in us that actually

  1039. we often find

  1040. ourselves conflicted,

  1041. not too dissimilar

  1042. to Naomi.

  1043. And remember

  1044. the Apostle Paul

  1045. in Romans chapter 7,

    Romans 7 chapter mention

  1046. the great Apostle Paul,

  1047. he says this,

  1048. I do not understand

  1049. myself.

1050. That which I do not

  1051. want to do,

  1052. I end up doing.

  1053. The very things

  1054. I hate.

  1055. And so I realize

  1056. that it's no longer

1057. I who do these things

  1058. merely,

  1059. but there's this sin

1060. that dwells inside of me.

  1061. I have the desire

  1062. to do what's right

  1063. but I somehow

  1064. don't have the ability

  1065. to carry it out.

1066. For I do not do

1067. the things that I want

  1068. to do

  1069. and the evil things

  1070. that I don't want to do,

  1071. I find myself

  1072. keep on doing.

1073. Even the great Apostle Paul

  1074. finds himself

  1075. conflicted.

1076. And then what does he say?

  1077. He says,

1078. Wretched man that I am,

  1079. who will deliver me

1080. from such a body of death?

  1081. Friends,

  1082. I find myself

  1083. agreeing with Paul.

  1084. Wretched man

  1085. that I am,

  1086. who will deliver me

  1087. from this confliction

  1088. of my soul?

1089. And then he says this,

  1090. Thanks be to God

1091. through the Lord Jesus Christ.

  1092. And friends,

1093. I want to say that

  1094. if you're a human being,

1095. which chances are you are,

  1096. every one of us

  1097. are slightly conflicted.

  1098. Every one of us,

  1099. there'll be times

  1100. in our life

  1101. where there's a pull

  1102. and a heart

1103. to do the right thing

  1104. but there's a self-love

  1105. that wants to look

  1106. after ourselves.

  1107. And very often,

  1108. even the good things

  1109. that we do,

1110. our motives are mixed up

  1111. and our motives

  1112. are partly good

  1113. but partly self-preserving.

  1114. Oh,

1115. wretched man that I am,

  1116. who will deliver me

  1117. from such a turmoil?

  1118. Thanks be to God

  1119. through Jesus Christ,

  1120. our great Redeemer.

  1121. And friends,

  1122. when you hear

1123. that the way to life

  1124. is to deny ourselves,

  1125. those of us

  1126. that are more religious

  1127. might think to ourselves,

  1128. might be tempted

  1129. to think,

1130. if I do the right things,

  1131. if I deny myself,

1132. if I behave the right way,

  1133. then I'll be sorted.

1134. If I make the right decisions,

1135. God will look after me.

  1136. Friends,

  1137. don't believe the lie.

  1138. Don't believe the lie

1139. that God is on the side

  1140. of those

1141. who've got their religious credentials

  1142. all in order.

  1143. Don't believe the lie

1144. that if you just do

  1145. the right things

1146. and make the right choices

  1147. and everything's

1148. going to work out fine.

  1149. God rewards Boaz

  1150. with the amazing girl,

  1151. right?

  1152. He gets the girl.

  1153. And Boaz is faithful

  1154. and righteous.

1155. And Boaz is blessed by God.

1156. And Ruth is blessed by God.

  1157. But so is Naomi.

  1158. The conflicted mother-in-law

  1159. is also extremely,

  1160. abundantly,

  1161. extravagantly blessed by God.

  1162. Why?

1163. Not because of her faithfulness.

1164. Not because she's the perfect

  1165. God-fearing woman.

  1166. Not because she's got

1167. all her credentials in order.

1168. But because of the unprecedented

  1169. grace and kindness

1170. and the mercy of God.

  1171. Robert Deffenboer,

  1172. I think that's how

  1173. you say his name,

  1174. said this,

  1175. The book of Ruth

  1176. is not written

1177. so that we can glory

1178. in the goodness of man.

  1179. It is written

  1180. to reveal the glory

  1181. of our righteous God.

  1182. Ruth shows us

  1183. that the fulfillment

  1184. of God's purposes

  1185. and promises

  1186. depends on the goodness

  1187. and the greatness

  1188. of our God,

  1189. not on the goodness

  1190. of man.

1191. God is able to cause

1192. all things to work together

  1193. for our good,

  1194. but primarily

  1195. for his glory.

  1196. Friends,

  1197. those of us

  1198. that are followers

  1199. of Jesus this morning,

  1200. I hope you realize

  1201. the profound,

  1202. the gravity

1203. of the grace of God.

  1204. That everything God does,

  1205. the way that he,

1206. the way that he treats you

  1207. and I

  1208. is grounded

  1209. on not our goodness

  1210. or our righteousness,

  1211. but of the grace

1212. and the mercy of God.

1213. And this should cause us

  1214. to sing.

  1215. This should cause

  1216. our hearts to rejoice.

1217. This should put a song

  1218. in our hearts

  1219. as we realize

  1220. the great mercy

  1221. and the kindness

  1222. of our God.

  1223. God's ways

  1224. are counterintuitive.

  1225. God's ways

  1226. are always grounded

  1227. in grace.

  1228. Third thing is this.

  1229. God's ways

  1230. are all inclusive.

  1231. Now,

  1232. look at how

1233. the story of Ruth ends.

1234. If you've got your bulletin

  1235. or your Bible,

  1236. look at verse 17

  1237. with me.

  1238. It says this,

1239. the woman of the neighborhood

  1240. gave this boy

  1241. a name

  1242. saying,

1243. a son has been born

  1244. to Naomi.

  1245. They named him Obed.

  1246. He was the father

  1247. of Jesse,

  1248. the father of David.

  1249. And then the book

  1250. ends with this

  1251. seven generations

  1252. talking about Perez

  1253. through the family line

  1254. of Boaz

  1255. and ultimately

  1256. it ends

  1257. in David.

  1258. Now,

  1259. let's just zoom out

  1260. a little book,

  1261. a little bit.

  1262. the book of Ruth

  1263. is a hinge,

  1264. it's a pivot

  1265. in the history

  1266. of Israel.

  1267. Remember chapter one,

  1268. the first sentence

  1269. of chapter one

  1270. started like this,

  1271. in the time

  1272. of the judges,

  1273. right?

  1274. So,

1275. before the book of Ruth,

  1276. it's an era

  1277. or an epoch

  1278. in Israel's history

  1279. which is known

  1280. as the time

  1281. of the judges.

  1282. They didn't have kings,

  1283. they had these rulers,

  1284. these prophets,

  1285. these men and women

  1286. of God

  1287. called these judges.

  1288. And then the book

  1289. of Ruth ends,

  1290. the last verse

  1291. of Ruth,

  1292. talks about David.

  1293. And David was

  1294. the great king

  1295. of Israel.

  1296. And so,

  1297. sandwiched in between

  1298. these two epochs,

  1299. these eras

  1300. in Israel's history

  1301. stands this little book,

1302. this hinge of a book,

  1303. the book of Ruth,

  1304. right?

  1305. Now,

  1306. following on

1307. from the book of Ruth,

1308. we get to the time

  1309. of the kings,

  1310. okay?

  1311. We've just spoken

  1312. about that.

  1313. Now,

  1314. you might remember

  1315. in 1 Samuel,

1316. 1 Samuel is the next

  1317. book in the Bible,

  1318. in 1 Samuel chapter 8,

    1 Samuel 8 chapter mention

  1319. the people of Israel

  1320. come to Samuel,

  1321. the prophet,

  1322. and they say,

  1323. give us a king.

  1324. We want a king

  1325. like the other nations.

  1326. And God answers them

  1327. through Samuel saying,

1328. why do you want a king?

  1329. I'll be your king.

  1330. Everything you want

  1331. from a king,

1332. I will be with you.

  1333. I will lead you.

  1334. I will guide you.

  1335. I will protect you.

  1336. I'll go out

  1337. before you in battle.

1338. I will be your great king.

1339. And the people of God

  1340. say,

  1341. no,

  1342. we want a king

  1343. that we can see,

1344. a king that we can touch,

1345. a king that we can revere,

1346. a king that we can worship,

  1347. right?

  1348. And so God says,

  1349. okay,

  1350. I'll give you a king.

1351. And so he gives them

  1352. the king Saul.

  1353. And Saul starts off

  1354. a right,

  1355. but pretty quickly

1356. things get out of hand.

  1357. Saul's own conflicted self

  1358. gets in the way

  1359. and things go wrong.

  1360. And so King Saul,

1361. the first king of Israel,

  1362. he actually spends

1363. kind of the last 15 years,

  1364. the last decade

1365. and a half of his life,

  1366. his rule is marked

  1367. by jealousy,

  1368. by anger,

  1369. murder,

  1370. by murder.

  1371. And so King Saul

  1372. spends the last

1373. kind of half of his rule

  1374. trying to annihilate

  1375. this young man

  1376. in his temple,

  1377. this military leader,

  1378. this young man

  1379. in his palace,

1380. who's also his chief of staff

  1381. and his military general,

  1382. this young man

  1383. called David.

  1384. And so Saul

1385. tries to take him out.

  1386. He chases him down

  1387. all over the country

  1388. to try and kill

  1389. this young man

  1390. called David.

  1391. Now ironically,

  1392. the counterintuitive

  1393. nature of God,

  1394. Saul dies in battle

  1395. and the man

  1396. who takes the throne

  1397. is this young man,

  1398. David.

  1399. And David sits

  1400. on the throne

  1401. that Saul

  1402. once occupied.

  1403. And David becomes

  1404. the greatest king

  1405. that Israel ever had.

  1406. In many ways,

  1407. he's like Boaz.

  1408. He's not perfect.

1409. He has his own issues.

1410. He has to deal with sin.

  1411. But in many ways,

1412. his heart is after God.

  1413. He really does want

  1414. the things of God.

  1415. And he forgives

  1416. his enemies.

  1417. He forgives the people

  1418. that try and make

  1419. his life difficult.

  1420. David, like Boaz,

  1421. really is a God-fearing man.

  1422. And he's a righteous king.

  1423. And under him,

  1424. Israel flourishes.

  1425. Israel grows

  1426. and prospers.

1427. And who is this man,

  1428. David?

  1429. Well, we read,

  1430. he's the great-grandson

1431. of Naomi and Boaz, right?

1432. And so from this wrangled,

1433. kind of twisted family tree

  1434. of Naomi and Elimelech,

  1435. Boaz and Ruth,

  1436. remember Boaz and Ruth,

  1437. half Jewish,

  1438. half Moabite,

  1439. half God-fearing,

  1440. half foreigner,

  1441. half Jew,

  1442. half Gentile.

  1443. From this kind of

  1444. twisted family tree

  1445. of Naomi and Elimelech,

  1446. Boaz and Ruth,

  1447. comes Israel's greatest king.

  1448. And during his time,

  1449. Israel,

  1450. prosperous,

  1451. they flourish,

  1452. it's a time of safety,

  1453. it's a time of great blessing.

  1454. And because of David,

  1455. for all his faults,

  1456. because David is a God-fearing man,

1457. God makes him a promise.

1458. And God promises David this,

  1459. he says,

1460. as long as you trust me,

1461. there will forever be one of your descendants

  1462. on the throne.

  1463. For all time,

  1464. one of your descendants

1465. will sit on the throne

1466. of the nation of Israel.

  1467. Unfortunately,

  1468. that doesn't solve things,

  1469. because David eventually dies,

1470. and things in Israel start to unravel.

1471. And things get really bad,

  1472. and eventually,

  1473. after 400 years,

  1474. God says,

  1475. enough is enough.

  1476. He brings the Babylonians,

  1477. and he attacks Israel.

  1478. The Babylonians take Israel

1479. into exile for 70 years.

  1480. Eventually,

  1481. they come back,

1482. but Israel is never the same.

  1483. Civil war breaks out

  1484. after David's life,

1485. the north attacks the south,

  1486. they fight,

1487. and Israel is never the same again.

  1488. And so,

  1489. throughout Israel's history,

  1490. the people of God

1491. are looking for this king,

  1492. this great king

1493. that will rule them in righteousness,

  1494. this great king

1495. who will rule them in truth.

  1496. Forever,

  1497. Israel's looking,

  1498. longing,

  1499. waiting for the king

  1500. that will redeem them,

1501. the king who will buy them

1502. out of their tragic situation,

1503. even at great cost to themselves.

1504. And they're waiting for this king,

1505. and when will this king arrive?

  1506. And one king dies,

1507. and the next king arises,

  1508. and suddenly you think,

1509. this will be the king.

  1510. He will rescue us.

  1511. And eventually,

  1512. he dies,

1513. and things go wrong again.

1514. And then another king emerges,

  1515. and then we think,

1516. this will be the one to save us.

1517. And things just get worse again.

  1518. And forever,

  1519. Israel's waiting,

  1520. longing for the king

  1521. who will rescue them

  1522. and redeem them.

  1523. Until such time

  1524. is one of David's

  1525. great,

  1526. great,

  1527. great descendants,

  1528. born in a town

1529. called the town of David,

  1530. the town of Bethlehem.

  1531. This descendant

1532. is true king of Israel,

  1533. the king that Israel's

  1534. always waited for.

1535. This is the Lord Jesus Christ.

1536. And not only is the true

  1537. and better David,

1538. being a descendant of Boaz,

  1539. he's the true

  1540. and better redeemer.

  1541. He's the one

  1542. who came to redeem

1543. not just Ruth and Naomi

1544. out of their tragic situation,

  1545. not just Israel

1546. out of their tragic situation.

  1547. He's the redeemer

  1548. who came to redeem

  1549. the whole world.

  1550. And notice the scandal

  1551. of this great redeemer.

  1552. This great redeemer,

  1553. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  1554. the scandal is what?

  1555. That his ancestors

  1556. aren't even fully Jewish.

  1557. His great,

  1558. great grandmother

  1559. is what?

  1560. A Moabite,

  1561. a pagan Gentile,

1562. someone from the land of Moab

  1563. that they were enemies

  1564. of God's people.

  1565. And this great ancestor

1566. of Jesus and of David

1567. is not one of God's people.

1568. And yet God includes her

  1569. in the bloodline

  1570. of Israel's greatest king,

  1571. King David,

  1572. and ultimately

1573. in the bloodline of Jesus.

  1574. Friends,

  1575. you see what God

  1576. is saying here?

  1577. God is saying

1578. no matter what your past,

  1579. doesn't matter

  1580. where you come from,

  1581. it doesn't matter

  1582. what your background is.

  1583. You can be Jewish,

  1584. you can be Gentile,

  1585. you can be Buddhist,

  1586. you can be Hindu,

  1587. you can be,

1588. your background can be Taoist,

  1589. you can be agnostic,

  1590. it doesn't matter

  1591. what your background is,

1592. heaven and earth's true king,

1593. heaven and earth's true redeemer

  1594. has come for you.

1595. If you'll come to him,

1596. if you'll bow down to him,

1597. if you'll come to him

  1598. like Ruth did

  1599. and said,

1600. let your people be my people,

1601. let your God be my God,

1602. if you'll come to him

1603. like Ruth came to Boaz

  1604. and said,

1605. cover me with your wings,

  1606. come and rescue me,

  1607. redeem me

  1608. with your redeeming love.

1609. And so what Boaz says

1610. to Ruth in chapter two,

  1611. he says,

  1612. don't go anywhere,

  1613. stay close to me,

  1614. I will make sure

  1615. that you looked after,

  1616. is what this redeemer

1617. says to all of us.

1618. He invites us to his table,

  1619. he invites us

1620. to come and eat with him,

  1621. he gives us bread

  1622. and wine,

  1623. he gives us food,

1624. and when we accept it,

  1625. when we come

  1626. and we lie down

  1627. at his feet,

  1628. when we come

  1629. and take shelter

  1630. under the shadow

  1631. of his wings,

  1632. he comes

  1633. and he rescues us,

  1634. he comes

  1635. and gives us rest.

  1636. Friends,

1637. the story of the gospel

  1638. is not

  1639. that God

  1640. looks after those

  1641. who look after themselves.

  1642. The message

  1643. of the gospel

  1644. is not that

  1645. the religious

  1646. and the pious

  1647. and that those

  1648. that have got it

  1649. all together

  1650. win in the end.

  1651. The story

  1652. of the gospel

  1653. is not that

  1654. the good guys

  1655. always come out

  1656. on top.

  1657. The message

  1658. of the gospel

  1659. is that though

  1660. all of us

  1661. are like Ruth,

  1662. foreigners

  1663. and outcasts,

  1664. though all of us

  1665. are like Naomi,

  1666. conflicted

  1667. and broken,

  1668. though all of us

  1669. may be like David

  1670. and Boaz,

  1671. trying to serve God

  1672. but conflicted

  1673. with our own sin,

  1674. though we are

  1675. like these people

  1676. conflicted

  1677. and broken,

  1678. the gospel

  1679. tells us that

  1680. though we have

  1681. fallen short

  1682. of God's standards,

  1683. both Jew

  1684. and Gentile,

  1685. religious

  1686. and secular,

  1687. conservative

  1688. and liberal,

  1689. the Ruths

  1690. of this world

  1691. and the Naomi's

  1692. of this world

  1693. and the Boaz's

  1694. of this world

  1695. are invited

  1696. to come

  1697. to the great

  1698. Redeemer,

  1699. invited to come

  1700. to his table,

  1701. invited to come

  1702. and find shelter

  1703. and safety

  1704. under the shadow

  1705. of his wings.

  1706. Friends,

  1707. can we come

  1708. to him this morning?

  1709. Can we come

  1710. to our great

  1711. Redeemer?

  1712. Can we come

  1713. to the one

  1714. who not just

  1715. redeemed Naomi

  1716. and Ruth,

  1717. not just redeemed

  1718. Israel,

  1719. the one

  1720. who's redeeming

  1721. the whole world,

  1722. Jew and Gentile alike,

  1723. the one who came

  1724. for sinners

  1725. like you

  1726. and me?

  1727. Let's come

  1728. to him this morning.

  1729. Let's pray together.

  1730. Can I invite you

  1731. to stand with me?

  1732. Let's come

  1733. to Christ,

  1734. our great Redeemer

  1735. this morning.

  1736. Maybe let's

  1737. close our eyes

  1738. and

  1739. if you're

  1740. comfortable

  1741. will,

  1742. I encourage you

  1743. to maybe

  1744. take a posture

  1745. that reflects it.

  1746. Maybe open

  1747. your hands.

  1748. It's a posture

  1749. that communicates,

  1750. God,

  1751. I come to you.

  1752. I'm open.

  1753. I'm not close

  1754. to you.

  1755. I'm not holding

  1756. on to my

  1757. pride and reputation.

  1758. I come empty.

  1759. I come vulnerable.

  1760. I come in a posture

  1761. of surrender.

  1762. Friends,

  1763. this morning

  1764. let's come

  1765. to our great

  1766. Redeemer

  1767. for his mercy

  1768. and his kindness.

  1769. Let's acknowledge

  1770. our need

  1771. for his mercy

  1772. and his kindness.

  1773. Friends,

  1774. this morning

  1775. let's acknowledge

  1776. that

  1777. though we might

  1778. be tempted

  1779. to think of ourselves

  1780. like Ruth.

  1781. There's probably

  1782. a lot more

  1783. of Naomi

  1784. in us

  1785. than we like

  1786. to acknowledge.

  1787. Let's acknowledge

  1788. that this morning.

  1789. Friends,

  1790. this morning

  1791. let's revel

  1792. in the unbelievable

  1793. kindness

  1794. and the mercy

  1795. of God.

  1796. The fact

  1797. that God's

  1798. kindness

  1799. to us

  1800. is extravagantly

  1801. more than

  1802. we could ask

  1803. or imagine.

  1804. this morning

  1805. let's revel

  1806. in the fact

  1807. that God's

  1808. hand is

  1809. all over history

  1810. working out

  1811. his purposes

  1812. generation

  1813. after generation

  1814. after generation.

  1815. God,

  1816. we come to you.

  1817. We come to you

  1818. this morning,

  1819. God,

  1820. and we acknowledge

  1821. that we need you.

  1822. God,

  1823. this morning

  1824. we don't come

  1825. to you

  1826. with our

  1827. religious

  1828. credentials.

  1829. We don't come

  1830. with our

  1831. accolades.

  1832. We don't come

  1833. deserving

  1834. or earning

  1835. your grace.

  1836. We come

  1837. as humble

  1838. recipients

  1839. of your grace.

  1840. And we say,

  1841. Jesus,

  1842. won't you

  1843. rescue us?

  1844. Won't you

  1845. redeem us?

  1846. Won't you

  1847. cover us

  1848. with your wings,

  1849. God?

  1850. We've come

  1851. to take

  1852. shelter

  1853. and safety

  1854. and refuge

  1855. in the shadow

  1856. of the almighty.

  1857. Jesus,

  1858. come and have

  1859. your way.

  1860. And Jesus,

  1861. we pray

  1862. that as you

  1863. rescue us,

  1864. won't you

  1865. also change

  1866. us to make

  1867. us more like you?

  1868. Won't you

  1869. settle our hearts,

  1870. God?

  1871. won't you

  1872. give us

  1873. great rest.

  1874. Father,

  1875. pray for those

  1876. of us

  1877. that are

  1878. anxious,

  1879. those of us

  1880. that carry

  1881. turmoil in our

  1882. hearts,

  1883. those of us

  1884. that are scared

  1885. and fearful.

  1886. I pray,

  1887. Christ,

  1888. that we come

  1889. and find

  1890. our refuge

  1891. in you.

  1892. I pray for us,

  1893. God,

  1894. those of us

  1895. that feel

  1896. conflicted.

  1897. God,

  1898. won't you

  1899. open the eyes

  1900. of our hearts

  1901. to see you

  1902. and to trust you?

  1903. God,

  1904. I pray for those

  1905. of us

  1906. that maybe

  1907. our hearts

  1908. have grown

  1909. cold towards you

  1910. and worship

  1911. has become hard.

  1912. Oh,

  1913. God,

  1914. won't you

  1915. ban the flame

  1916. of worship

  1917. in our hearts

  1918. again?

  1919. Won't you

  1920. cause us

  1921. to rejoice?

  1922. Won't you

  1923. cause us

  1924. to sing?

  1925. God,

  1926. won't you

  1927. cause our hearts

  1928. to overflow

  1929. with worship

  1930. for you,

  1931. God,

  1932. I pray.

  1933. Oh,

  1934. Holy Spirit,

  1935. come,

  1936. we pray.
