  1. Father, pour out your Holy Spirit upon us.

  2. For some of us, these are very familiar stories.

  3. For others, maybe they're new to us, Father.

  4. But for each of us, Father, we ask that your Holy Spirit would come deep within us

  5. and write these stories in the command center of our lives

  6. so that they affect our memories, our imagination, our will, and how we live our lives.

  7. And all this we ask in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  8. Please be seated.

  9. Don't you think that if people had to follow what the Bible says about same-sex attraction,

  10. that you're condemning same-sex attracted people to a life of loneliness?

  11. The reason I say this is, well, first of all, believe it or not,

  12. the scripture text that we have here today actually speaks very powerfully into this.

  13. Some friends of mine and some friends of yours,

  14. the church that they attended for many years,

  15. is just beginning to go through potential denominational battles

  16. over whether the church should provide marriage ceremonies for those who are same-sex attracted

  17. so that a man can marry a man or a woman could marry a woman.

  18. And one of the very moving arguments that was made as they're starting to look at this

  19. is don't you think it's the case?

  20. That why is it, you know, heterosexual people, they can potentially marry another person,

  21. but for those who are same-sex attracted and if God doesn't heal them or change that in them after prayer,

  22. aren't you condemning them to a life of loneliness?

  23. Like, isn't it a matter of, I mean, how can you do that?

  24. And if we're honest, this is a very powerful thing

  25. because who amongst us wants to condemn anybody to loneliness?

  26. And in fact, if our heart breaks even maybe at hearing something like this,

  27. that this might be the case or the possibility.

  28. So believe it or not, the text that we looked at, that I read just a few moments ago,

  29. actually has something very powerful and formative to say about this.

  30. So it'd be a great help to me.

  31. You can see it's going to be the story of Jesus turning water into wine.

  32. One of the things that we might be doing most Sundays when we preach on John

  33. is if there's a good piece of artwork to go along with the story,

  34. I'm going to put some of the artwork up on the screen

  35. so that our eyes can also sort of enter in.

  36. It helps us just enter in.

  37. And so, by the way, if you folks, if you read ahead and see where I'm going,

  38. I'd love it if you send me suggestions for the artwork, by the way.

  39. That would be a great help.

  40. Can't promise I'll always use it, but I'd love the suggestions.

  41. So if you turn in your Bibles to John 2, verses 1 to 11,

    John 2:1–11

  42. John 2, 1 to 11, let's look at this first story,

  43. the story of Jesus turning water into wine.

  44. And here's how it goes.

  45. On the third day, there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee.

  46. Just sort of pause here for a second before we go any further.

  47. On the third day, there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee.

  48. You might remember that...

  49. So John wrote a book, right?

  50. So books have structures.

  51. You know, they have ways that the author decided to write the book.

  52. And the way that John is written, there's the first 18 verses

  53. are sort of this big philosophical, almost mystical, theological,

  54. cosmos view of Jesus and the gospel and what's going on.

  55. And those are like the first 18 verses.

  56. And it's all written in very simple English and simple Greek.

  57. And then in verse 19, all of a sudden, it plunges into the world of history,

  58. the world of time and space, the world that we're in right now ourselves.

  59. And when this begins here on the third day,

  60. John is going to keep reminding us as the gospel goes on

  61. that he's now talking about something that happened to real people in a real time,

  62. in a real culture, in a real place.

  63. And it's just one of those...

  64. We're going to see more aspects of it where John keeps saying,

  65. this is something that happened.

  66. You might think it's incredible.

  67. You might not believe it.

  68. You might not believe it.

  69. But I'm bearing witness that this is what happened.

  70. This is what took place.

  71. So verse 1 again of chapter 2.

  72. On the third day, there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee.

  73. And the mother of Jesus was there.

  74. And just sort of pause.

  75. This is another very significant thing.

  76. In the other three gospels, Matthew, Mark, and Luke,

  77. they all have...

  78. Well, actually, Mark doesn't.

  79. But Matthew and Luke, of course, have the story of the birth of Jesus.

  80. And it's very interesting how John chooses to write, right?

  81. So he has this...

  82. You know, in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God,

  83. and the Word was God.

  84. He was with God in the beginning.

  85. You know, the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.

  86. All these big, big, big ideas.

  87. And then he comes into history with John the Baptist.

  88. And now, like, how can you...

  89. Is Jesus human?

  90. I mean, that's a good question to ask.

  91. And yet, you know, human beings have moms.

  92. We have dads.

  93. That's human beings, right?

  94. Joseph's not mentioned.

  95. It's believed by most people that Joseph must have died.

  96. Quite a few years before this.

  97. But it's just one of these...

  98. You're going to see many other things here in the story

  99. that just emphasize the fact that Jesus is human,

  100. that it's in real time and a real place,

  101. talking about things that really happen.

  102. So, verse 2 again.

  103. Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples.

  104. When the wine ran out,

  105. the mother of Jesus said to him,

  106. they have no wine.

  107. It probably means that Jesus' mom was related to the people

  108. whose wedding it was.

  109. In other words, Jesus had cousins.

  110. And he had aunts and uncles,

  111. because he's human.

  112. Verse 4.

  113. And Jesus said to her,

  114. Woman,

  115. what does this have to do with me?

  116. My hour has not yet come.

  117. And the language is,

  118. it's not a put-down of his mom,

  119. but it's a distancing language.

  120. It's a polite way of speaking,

  121. but it sort of is a bit of a shocking thing,

  122. because usually a son would refer to his mother,

  123. and there'd be some adjectives added to the word woman

  124. to show closeness.

  125. So it's a bit of a distancing language from his mom.

  126. And in verse 5,

  127. his mother said to the servants,

  128. Do whatever he tells you.

  129. Now, verse 6.

  130. Now, there were six stone water jars there

  131. for the Jewish rites of purification,

  132. each holding 20 or 30 gallons.

  133. And as I said,

  134. that probably averages out to about 200 bottles of wine.

  135. In fact,

  136. I actually went looking for an image of a human being

  137. standing with 200 bottles of wine,

  138. but I couldn't find one.

  139. And I don't have 200 bottles of wine,

  140. so I couldn't take a picture of me standing with them.

  141. And if I did have 200 bottles of wine,

  142. you'd probably wonder about me.

  143. But that's another.

  144. I don't.

  145. So I guess it'd be worse if I had 200 empties.

  146. But anyway, verse 6.

  147. Now, there were six stone water jars there

  148. for the Jewish rites of purification,

  149. each holding 20 or 30 gallons,

  150. 200 bottles of wine.

  151. Jesus said to the servants,

  152. Fill the jars with water.

  153. And the servants filled them up to the brim.

  154. And Jesus said to them,

  155. Now, draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.

  156. So they took it.

  157. When the master of the feast tasted the water,

  158. now become wine,

  159. and did not know where it came from,

  160. though the servants who had drawn the water knew,

  161. the master of the feast called the bridegroom

  162. and said to him,

  163. Everyone serves the good wine first,

  164. but when the people have drunk freely,

  165. then the poor wine.

  166. But you have kept the good wine until now.

  167. Now, there's the first of his signs.

  168. Jesus did it, Cana in Galilee.

  169. Notice, John's making a claim.

  170. This is a sign.

  171. It's not just a miracle.

  172. It's a sign.

  173. Jesus did this.

  174. He did it in a place called Cana,

  175. in a place called Galilee,

  176. and manifested his glory,

  177. and his disciples believed in him.

  178. So here's the first thing about this story

  179. to see what's going on,

  180. because we might not just quite grasp the full,

  181. I mean, we don't grasp the significance.

  182. If you could put up the first point,

  183. that would be great.

  184. Here's the first thing,

  185. and we don't maybe notice it in the flow of the story,

  186. but the fact of the matter is,

  187. is that, I don't know,

  188. probably some of us can give witness to miracles.

  189. I have some things that I think I could say

  190. were probably a miracle,

  191. God acting miraculously to do something

  192. that shouldn't have been able to happen.

  193. But when that happens,

  194. I pray to God

  195. and ask him to work a miracle,

  196. which God might or might not do.

  197. I mean, God hears my prayer.

  198. Sometimes he says yes.

  199. Sometimes he says no.

  200. Sometimes he says not yet.

  201. But I pray to God

  202. and ask God to work a miracle,

  203. which he might or might not do.

  204. But Jesus willed the miracle.

  205. He just willed it.

  206. He doesn't say a prayer.

  207. He doesn't say any words.

  208. He doesn't touch the water.

  209. He doesn't do a religious ceremony.

  210. In fact, if you think about it for a second,

  211. maybe Mary was saying to Jesus,

  212. Jesus, you're very religious.

  213. They've run out of wine.

  214. Do something.

  215. And Jesus would do the typical religious thing.

  216. He'd take up a collection.

  217. Sorry, that joke didn't work as well

  218. as I thought it would.

  219. But anyway, I mean,

  220. that's one of those,

  221. you realize that,

  222. whoa, that's right.

  223. Jesus just willed it.

  224. And then the other thing about it

  225. is that the story

  226. is emphasizing

  227. that it's a real miracle.

  228. Like if some of you are wondering,

  229. well, George,

  230. like, no, but the story emphasizes

  231. it's a real miracle.

  232. Like you look back at it

  233. for a second here.

  234. Jesus is,

  235. if you look back in verse 3,

  236. verse 3,

  237. the wine runs out.

  238. Jesus discovers

  239. that the wines run out

  240. when Mary tells him this.

  241. And then in verse 4,

  242. he says,

  243. well, what am I,

  244. you know,

  245. my time's not come.

  246. And Mary just says

  247. to the servants,

  248. do whatever he tells you.

  249. There's no implication there

  250. that Mary expects Jesus

  251. to do a miracle.

  252. In fact,

  253. at the end of the story,

  254. it basically is saying

  255. that Jesus,

  256. up until this point in time,

  257. has never performed a miracle.

  258. miracle.

  259. And we don't know,

  260. obviously,

  261. what was going through Mary's.

  262. John's just recorded

  263. what Mary's actually told Jesus,

  264. but I don't know,

  265. maybe he just,

  266. maybe she was thinking

  267. he's just really competent.

  268. He's always managed

  269. to work things out

  270. and help people

  271. from embarrassing situations,

  272. and he'll figure something out.

  273. And then you notice here,

  274. verse 6,

  275. there's stone water jars.

  276. It's not like there's clay

  277. or something that,

  278. you know,

  279. is going to be keeping

  280. lots of wine in them.

  281. And they're there

  282. for the rights of purification.

  283. In other words,

  284. there's stone jars

  285. which are there

  286. just to be used for water.

  287. That's why they're there.

  288. They're not used

  289. for 53 different things.

  290. They're just used for water.

  291. And there's lots of it.

  292. 200 bottles of wine.

  293. There's lots and lots of it.

  294. And then Jesus just says

  295. in verse 7,

  296. fill the jars with water.

  297. And then Jesus

  298. doesn't touch the jars.

  299. He doesn't bring the water.

  300. He doesn't do any type of trick.

  301. And then they even mentioned

  302. that they filled them

  303. to the brim.

  304. In other words,

  305. it isn't as if they said,

  306. well,

  307. they filled it

  308. and they left like six inches

  309. and then maybe

  310. while everybody was

  311. looking away,

  312. Jesus had a couple

  313. of really good bottles of wine,

  314. like fortified wine,

  315. and he poured it in

  316. and it was able to blend up

  317. so that it sort of

  318. looked like weak wine.

  319. No,

  320. they emphasized

  321. that it was filled

  322. right up to the brim.

  323. And then he says,

  324. now draw some out

  325. and take it to the master

  326. of the feast.

  327. And the implication is

  328. is that when the servant

  329. does this,

  330. once again,

  331. Jesus hasn't touched it,

  332. that the servant

  333. would have just looked

  334. and it would have just

  335. looked like water to him.

  336. And in fact,

  337. then it goes,

  338. so they took it,

  339. verse nine,

  340. and when the master

  341. of the feast

  342. tasted the water

  343. now become wine

  344. and did not know

  345. where it came from,

  346. the master of the feast,

  347. just skipping down,

  348. called the bridegroom

  349. and said to him,

  350. verse 10,

  351. everyone serves

  352. the good wine first

  353. and when people

  354. have drunk freely

  355. then the poor wine,

  356. but you have kept

  357. the good wine until now.

  358. So the implication is

  359. is that somewhere between

  360. the person taking the ladle,

  361. leaving the stone jars

  362. and coming to the master

  363. of the feast

  364. that both the wine

  365. and the water

  366. and the jars

  367. and the water

  368. and the ladle

  369. both had become wine

  370. and because it's good wine

  371. it means it really

  372. tastes like good wine.

  373. A lot of wine

  374. in those days

  375. was greatly watered down.

  376. So whether it was

  377. both cheap wine,

  378. highly watered down,

  379. which is what the master

  380. of the feast

  381. was expecting,

  382. they said it tastes

  383. like really good wine

  384. so it couldn't have

  385. been watered down.

  386. Like the text emphasizes

  387. that it's a miracle

  388. and Jesus just wills it.

  389. Jesus just wills it.

  390. So some of you

  391. might say

  392. how is this possible?

  393. I don't know if you're here

  394. as a visitor

  395. or maybe you've just

  396. come out of curiosity

  397. or you're maybe on a bit

  398. of a religious quest

  399. or a spiritual quest

  400. and one of the things

  401. that you might not know

  402. is that there's whole legions

  403. of Christian churches

  404. in the first world

  405. that don't believe

  406. that miracles happened.

  407. That they would just

  408. interpret this as

  409. I don't know what

  410. they would interpret it as

  411. as a sign of

  412. the incoming of the kingdom

  413. or just how

  414. I mean they'd have

  415. different ways of trying

  416. but they don't actually

  417. believe it's a miracle

  418. but John has clearly

  419. organized the story

  420. to say this is a miracle

  421. and it actually happened.

  422. And so some of you

  423. might say very reasonably

  424. how on earth

  425. could something like

  426. that happen?

  427. And how's it possible?

  428. So here just before

  429. I'm going to give you

  430. three little things

  431. about this

  432. and here's the first thing.

  433. One of the things

  434. in some ways

  435. I could validly say

  436. that I don't

  437. in Canada

  438. I don't believe in God.

  439. Some of you

  440. who maybe came here

  441. visiting from a

  442. Pentecostal church

  443. said I knew I shouldn't

  444. come to an Anglican service

  445. the minister doesn't

  446. believe in God.

  447. What I mean is

  448. that probably

  449. if I was to ask

  450. the majority of Canadians

  451. what they mean by God

  452. I don't believe that

  453. God exists

  454. the way they describe God.

  455. And I'm starting

  456. it's starting to

  457. dawn on me

  458. that maybe what I have

  459. to do when I talk

  460. to Canadians

  461. is saying

  462. you know I don't believe

  463. in the Canadian God

  464. I only believe

  465. in the God

  466. that Jesus reveals.

  467. I only believe

  468. in the God

  469. that Jesus reveals.

  470. And in fact

  471. if you go back

  472. that's what John

  473. says in his prologue.

  474. In fact

  475. in John

  476. in those

  477. you go back

  478. and you look

  479. in those verses

  480. what John says

  481. is that Jesus

  482. is the exegesis

  483. of God.

  484. He's the one

  485. who makes God

  486. clear

  487. and understandable

  488. to people

  489. the real God

  490. not the

  491. not the

  492. not the idols

  493. not the abstract gods

  494. not the gods

  495. of the philosophers

  496. but the real God

  497. who actually does exist

  498. that Jesus

  499. is going to make

  500. this God known.

  501. He's introducing God.

  502. And so

  503. I think increasingly

  504. that what I have to say

  505. to people

  506. is that I don't believe

  507. in God

  508. as Canadians understand

  509. but I believe

  510. in the God

  511. who's revealed

  512. in Jesus.

  513. And what

  514. the God

  515. who's revealed

  516. in Jesus

  517. what he's revealing

  518. about God

  519. is remember

  520. how the

  521. John's gospel

  522. begins very famously

  523. in the beginning

  524. was the word

  525. and the word

  526. was with God

  527. and the word

  528. was God

  529. he was in the beginning

  530. with God

  531. all things were made

  532. through him

  533. and without him

  534. nothing was made

  535. that was made

  536. in him was life

  537. and the life

  538. was the light of men

  539. that's how

  540. it's introduced.

  541. So if you could put up

  542. the next point

  543. here's what I would say

  544. the second thing

  545. is that

  546. what Bible teaches

  547. what Jesus

  548. is introducing

  549. us to God

  550. is he's introducing

  551. us to the fact

  552. that God

  553. created matter

  554. out of nothing.

  555. So how can miracles

  556. happen?

  557. Well because if you

  558. have a God

  559. who does exist

  560. who created matter

  561. out of nothing

  562. he can change

  563. one kind of matter

  564. into another.

  565. That's not a hard

  566. thing for him.

  567. If you can make

  568. matter out of nothing

  569. it's nothing

  570. for him

  571. I almost put that up

  572. it's nothing

  573. for him

  574. to take

  575. some matter

  576. which he was

  577. the inventor

  578. of it

  579. and turn that

  580. matter into

  581. a different

  582. type of matter

  583. turn water

  584. into wine.

  585. You see

  586. and

  587. so some of you

  588. might say

  589. okay George

  590. are you saying

  591. then that this

  592. whole miracle

  593. story depends

  594. upon the God

  595. that Jesus

  596. is introducing

  597. actually being

  598. the God

  599. who exists

  600. and I would

  601. say yes

  602. in fact

  603. I'm going to

  604. double down

  605. on it.

  606. I'm going to

  607. make it so

  608. that the

  609. choice is

  610. actually seen

  611. far more starkly.

  612. If you could

  613. put up the next

  614. point that would

  615. be great.

  616. Oh sorry

  617. there's a new

  618. piece.

  619. Go back there

  620. a second there.

  621. We're having

  622. two pieces of

  623. artwork.

  624. The other one

  625. I mean it sort

  626. of looked like

  627. it wasn't a

  628. party did it?

  629. I mean just

  630. you know that

  631. earlier piece

  632. of artwork

  633. it was as if

  634. I don't know

  635. it was as if

  636. it was a wedding

  637. and the bride

  638. and groom

  639. didn't like

  640. each other

  641. and they didn't

  642. like their

  643. family

  644. and the two

  645. families didn't

  646. like each other

  647. this is probably

  648. more what it

  649. looked like.

  650. I mean maybe

  651. it was.

  652. I mean we've

  653. all maybe we've

  654. been to weddings

  655. like that where

  656. nobody likes

  657. each other

  658. and it's just

  659. like really

  660. interminable.

  661. But you know

  662. most of us hope

  663. that if we had

  664. a wedding I

  665. mean I would

  666. hope with my

  667. kids that if

  668. there's a wedding

  669. that it looks

  670. maybe a bit

  671. more like that.

  672. Anyway next

  673. point Andrew

  674. sorry only God

  675. created all

  676. things and

  677. only the same

  678. God who's

  679. created all

  680. things can

  681. sustain his

  682. creation

  683. keep it in

  684. existence

  685. and only the

  686. same God

  687. who's created

  688. all things

  689. and sustains

  690. all things

  691. can reveal

  692. himself.

  693. If such a

  694. God exists

  695. who can create

  696. all things

  697. and sustain

  698. all things

  699. then I can't

  700. reveal him

  701. only he can

  702. reveal himself

  703. and only the

  704. same God

  705. can act

  706. to redeem

  707. his fallen

  708. human creatures.

  709. So what do we

  710. see in this

  711. story?

  712. It's actually

  713. quite an amazing

  714. story.

  715. what is being

  716. seen in this

  717. story is

  718. that Jesus

  719. wills

  720. the changing

  721. of one type

  722. of matter

  723. into another

  724. type of

  725. matter.

  726. He's revealing

  727. that he's

  728. God.

  729. Come to

  730. reveal

  731. God

  732. himself

  733. and reveal

  734. the way the

  735. world really

  736. does work.

  737. How

  738. things really

  739. exist.

  740. Just,

  741. you know,

  742. just this

  743. whole thing

  744. about God

  745. being the

  746. creator of

  747. all things,

  748. just,

  749. it's a whole

  750. other sermon

  751. but just very

  752. briefly,

  753. the choice

  754. is never

  755. between having

  756. faith and

  757. believing in

  758. science.

  759. faith.

  760. That's

  761. never the

  762. choice.

  763. People might

  764. say that's

  765. the choice

  766. but it's

  767. not the

  768. choice.

  769. The choice

  770. is never

  771. between science

  772. and faith.

  773. The choice

  774. is between

  775. two different

  776. philosophies

  777. to understand

  778. the science.

  779. And in

  780. one type

  781. of philosophy

  782. to understand

  783. the science,

  784. what ultimately

  785. exists is a

  786. what?

  787. Just matter,

  788. just energy,

  789. just time,

  790. just chance.

  791. Just how

  792. matter and

  793. energy works

  794. because of

  795. the way

  796. matter and

  797. energy is.

  798. And the

  799. other philosophy,

  800. the only rival

  801. in all the

  802. world is the

  803. Christian story,

  804. is in the

  805. beginning was

  806. the word,

  807. and the word

  808. was with

  809. God,

  810. and the word

  811. was God,

  812. he was in

  813. the beginning

  814. with God,

  815. all things

  816. were made

  817. through him,

  818. and without

  819. him nothing

  820. was made

  821. that was

  822. made.

  823. That's the

  824. only option

  825. to the

  826. philosophy,

  827. that there's

  828. only time

  829. and chance.

  830. And in

  831. that understanding,

  832. it's a

  833. who that is

  834. created and

  835. designed all

  836. things.

  837. Now,

  838. just,

  839. we're going

  840. to move

  841. on with

  842. this.

  843. Just,

  844. here's the

  845. thing,

  846. this is,

  847. you know,

  848. one of the

  849. things I pray

  850. every week as

  851. I'm working on

  852. my sermon,

  853. I pray that God

  854. will speak to my

  855. heart.

  856. Like,

  857. this isn't just

  858. something where I

  859. could come up

  860. with some really

  861. cool ideas and

  862. share it with

  863. you.

  864. And the way

  865. that God really

  866. spoke to my

  867. heart,

  868. this has been a

  869. constant,

  870. this has been a

  871. big issue in

  872. my life,

  873. especially,

  874. I've become more

  875. conscious of it as a

  876. big issue in my

  877. life over the last

  878. few years.

  879. But,

  880. you know what,

  881. if this story is

  882. true,

  883. then the world is

  884. different than most

  885. people understand and

  886. believe.

  887. If this is true,

  888. if there really is a

  889. God who does exist,

  890. who created all things

  891. and sustained all

  892. things and contained

  893. water into wine,

  894. then the fact of the

  895. matter is,

  896. is that one of the

  897. besetting problems I

  898. have is it's easy for

  899. me to slip into

  900. living my life as if,

  901. as if God is small

  902. and everything else

  903. is big.

  904. But if this story is

  905. true,

  906. then I need to call

  907. out to God and ask

  908. him to work in my

  909. life so that I start

  910. to understand that God

  911. is big and everything

  912. I face is small.

  913. Everything I face is

  914. small because the God

  915. who does exist creates

  916. planets, changes human

  917. history and changes

  918. human lives.

  919. Now, some of you

  920. might say,

  921. okay, George,

  922. that's all very,

  923. very, very, very

  924. interesting.

  925. But you hooked us at

  926. the beginning by

  927. talking about people

  928. who are same-sex

  929. attracted and whether

  930. the Bible, if the

  931. Bible is to believe

  932. God is condemning

  933. those who are same-sex

  934. attracted to a life of

  935. loneliness because

  936. they're not allowed to

  937. marry.

  938. And George, did you

  939. just sort of do that

  940. like a bit of a cheesy

  941. type of thing to get

  942. our attention and now

  943. you're going to just

  944. ignore it and hope we

  945. forgot how you began?

  946. Not at all.

  947. Not that I'm opposed to

  948. being cheesy sometimes.

  949. But, well, let's think

  950. about this story for a

  951. second because it

  952. actually has something

  953. which does directly

  954. connect to this and

  955. about the issues of

  956. holiness.

  957. One of the things that

  958. this story shows is

  959. that religion is

  960. usually wrong.

  961. Why is religion

  962. usually wrong?

  963. Okay, if you could put

  964. up the next point,

  965. Andrew, think about it

  966. for a second.

  967. If it was up to

  968. religion, Jesus would

  969. have turned the wine

  970. into water.

  971. Now, why are you

  972. saying, some of you

  973. might say, no, no.

  974. Actually, I mean, the

  975. story could have gone

  976. very differently.

  977. Couldn't you just think

  978. about it?

  979. If there's a whole pile

  980. of really holy people,

  981. whether they were, you

  982. know, think about it

  983. for a second.

  984. Sean Turner did a

  985. great sermon a couple

  986. of weeks ago talking

  987. about how the normal

  988. way that we think

  989. about things in the

  990. world and religion is

  991. that, you know, first

  992. you have a time of

  993. purification, then you

  994. have a time of

  995. illumination, then you

  996. finally have union with

  997. God, and the Bible

  998. completely rejects that.

  999. And you think about it

  1000. for a second.

1001. In fact, when I was

1002. looking for some of the

1003. artwork, I was trying to

1004. look for the source from

  1005. it.

  1006. It was a Christian

  1007. source about holiness,

1008. and every picture of the

  1009. people who were

  1010. pursuing holiness looked

1011. as if they had almost

1012. looked as if they'd been

  1013. starving themselves for the

1014. last 15 years of their

  1015. lives.

1016. I mean, they made skinny

  1017. people look fat.

  1018. They looked completely and

  1019. utterly emaciated, and

1020. they looked as if they had

  1021. diarrhea and were eating

  1022. prunes.

  1023. They looked really

  1024. ascetic.

1025. But if you think about it

  1026. for a second, that's not

  1027. just how many Christians

  1028. portray holy people.

  1029. That's how Muslims

  1030. portray holy people.

  1031. That's how Buddhists

  1032. portray holy people.

  1033. That's how Hindus portray

  1034. holy people.

1035. And that's how most of our

  1036. friends who hate religion

  1037. portray holy people, because

1038. they think, do I really want

1039. to look like I'm living on a

1040. diet of prunes, and I've just

  1041. smelled a bad smell?

  1042. No.

1043. What we want to do is watch

1044. football and call up, could you

1045. bring down more chips and more

  1046. beer?

1047. Like, compared to looking like

1048. that and watching a football

1049. game with some chips and beer, a lot

1050. of people in our culture say, I'm

1051. choosing the chips and beer.

1052. And then, of course, they do the

1053. yoga and the Pilates and diet and

1054. all that stuff to try to keep

  1055. their slim physique.

  1056. But that's a separate matter.

1057. So you could easily see that if

  1058. religious people were giving

1059. Jesus advice about how to work

1060. this, it would go like this.

1061. Mary comes to Jesus and says,

  1062. Jesus, there's a problem.

1063. They've run out of wine.

1064. And Jesus says, I know.

1065. I turned all the wine into water.

1066. And the religious people would be

  1067. very satisfied.

1068. Yes, because, of course, real

1069. holiness means to be very

1070. ascetic, is to deny yourself.

1071. That's what real holiness is.

1072. But Jesus, could you put up the

  1073. picture?

  1074. Jesus, I mean, that's not a really

  1075. great picture.

1076. One of you folks, maybe later on,

1077. will want to draw a better picture

1078. or paint a better picture, and we

1079. can use it next time we preach on

  1080. this.

  1081. It's a party.

1082. Jesus turned the water into wine.

1083. And Jesus is introducing God.

1084. And he's introducing God as the

1085. source of pleasure and joy.

1086. If you could put up the next point,

1087. it's all I've done is just quoted

  1088. Psalm 16, verse 11.

    Psalms 16:11

1089. You make known to me the path of

  1090. life.

1091. In your presence there is fullness

  1092. of joy.

1093. At your right hand are pleasures

  1094. forevermore.

1095. You, the psalmist, is speaking to God.

1096. And in fact, if you go back and see

  1097. Psalm 16, it's the culmination, it's

1098. the end of the psalm.

1099. It's the high point of the psalm.

1100. It's the whole psalm is moving to this

1101. declaration by the person who comes to

  1102. realize who is God.

1103. God makes known to me the path of life.

1104. God, in your presence, there is fullness

  1105. joy.

1106. God, in your presence, are pleasures

  1107. forevermore.

1108. This is the true God.

1109. This is the real God.

1110. This is the God that Jesus reveals.

1111. And it's really interesting, as we'll see

1112. in a moment, this is the first sign.

1113. This is the foundation sign.

1114. This is the ABC sign.

1115. This is the beginning grammar sign.

1116. This is the way that God, that himself, in

1117. the person of his son, wants to introduce

1118. himself to human beings by his first

  1119. miracle.

1120. That, folks, you got it all wrong.

1121. The devil did not create joy.

1122. The devil did not create pleasure.

1123. You know, in fact, what this text is

1124. telling us is that, amongst other things,

1125. is that God created a world where wine

1126. could be invented and enjoyed.

1127. Sin created drunkenness and alcoholism.

1128. God didn't create drunkenness and alcoholism.

  1129. Sin created that.

1130. But he made a world where there's pleasure

  1131. and where there's joy.

1132. So how does this affect this whole issue

  1133. of the same-sex marriage?

1134. You see, the fact of the matter is,

1135. is that in our hearts of hearts,

1136. we expect that to be really religious,

1137. we expect, you see, there's a big part of us

1138. that expects that God is the one who takes

1139. away joy, that God is the one who takes

1140. away pleasure, that really, really, God

1141. would love me far more if I was about 50 pounds

1142. lighter and I looked really emaciated

1143. and I fasted four times a week and I hardly

1144. got any sleep because I was up praying all the

1145. time and I was wearing rags because I gave

1146. all of my money away and if I was doing that,

1147. then God would really love me a lot more

1148. and in my heart of hearts, that's what I believe.

1149. And so in my heart of hearts, when it comes

1150. to issues of holiness, we think, yes,

1151. that person's worries about somebody is

  1152. completely and utterly correct.

  1153. God takes pleasure away.

  1154. He takes joy away.

1155. And this God who takes pleasure away and he

1156. takes joy away, yes, he allows some people

1157. to get married and now God's not allowing that

1158. person to get married and all they're going

1159. to be stuck with is a life of loneliness and

1160. water, a life of no pleasure whatsoever.

1161. Because that's what God is like.

1162. And that's why it's so important for all of us.

1163. It's what why might God suggest that we have

  1164. to tithe?

1165. Well, at the end of the day, God doesn't like

  1166. you enjoying your money.

1167. He doesn't want you to ever have pleasure.

1168. You know, why is it that God wants you to

  1169. go to church?

1170. Well, because he wants to ruin your Sundays.

1171. He wants to ruin your weekends.

1172. He takes your pleasures away from you.

1173. Why do you want to read God's word?

1174. Well, because it's boring and God wants to

1175. bore you and he wants to tell you irrelevant

1176. things and impossible things to accomplish.

  1177. Why?

1178. Because in our heart of hearts, we worry that

  1179. God is like that.

1180. We worry that he is not the one whose path

1181. will lead us to life.

1182. And that in his presence, there is the

1183. fullness of joy and in his right hand, there

  1184. are pleasures forevermore.

1185. And we don't believe in our heart of hearts

1186. that the same God who created all things and

1187. understands why things are created and

1188. understands where our pleasure buttons and our

1189. joy buttons are, that the same God who created

1190. all things is also the one who has now come to

1191. redeem us, to bring us back to the God in whose

1192. presence there is a fullness of joy and at

1193. right whose right hand is pleasures forevermore.

1194. That in fact, in the new heaven and the new earth,

1195. when Jesus comes a second time and there's the

1196. judgment of the living and the dead and there's

1197. the new heaven and the new earth, that the rumor

1198. of a sniff of a distant smell of the pleasures of the

1199. new heaven and the new earth would so overwhelm us, it

1200. would destroy our minds and our bodies and our wills.

1201. Because in the new heaven and the new earth, there will be joy and

1202. pleasures that this fallen mortal body right now cannot

1203. possibly enjoy without being unmade.

1204. And when Jesus comes a second time and there is the, there is the

1205. judging of the living and the dead and God says, come into my

1206. kingdom, my well-beloved son, George, you are clothed in the

  1207. righteousness of Christ.

1208. The lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world has taken away

  1209. your sin.

  1210. The time has come.

1211. The shadow lands are far gone.

1212. You now will have your resurrection body come into this new heaven and

  1213. this new earth.

1214. You will be like my son, Jesus, in terms of his resurrected body.

1215. And I will enter into an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison.

1216. And so my brothers and sisters, my friends, my seekers, so will you.

  1217. So will you.

1218. Now some of you might say, George, um, well, but just, just one other thing.

  1219. I was, yeah, I have a few minutes.

1220. Just one more thing before going.

1221. See, the way to understand this story amongst other things is this.

1222. So the, the guy who's organizing the wine, uh, the master of the ceremony, he

  1223. knows how life works.

1224. He knows you blow your wad on a couple of good bottles of wine you have right at

1225. first, and then you just keep getting cheaper and cheaper, and then you add

1226. water, and it gets more and more watered down as, as the celebration goes on for

  1227. two or three days.

1228. So you can well imagine that the guy who's organizing the wedding, he doesn't

  1229. know what's going on.

1230. He doesn't know that the wine's run out.

1231. He sees the servant coming with some wine to taste, and you can just picture him

1232. going, oh, gosh, I have to taste this?

1233. It's probably going to be really bad.

1234. Like, this isn't a very rich couple?

1235. And he's sort of bracing himself to, to drink something, and he takes, and he takes a sip,

1236. and there'd probably be the look of shock on his face.

1237. And then he takes a second sip, and it would be, wow, is this ever a good wine?

1238. God, you know, our pleasures and our joys, they're disordered.

1239. They need to be healed by God.

1240. But friends, brothers and sisters, you know, if this afternoon you get a spectacular piece

1241. of firm tofu, and that's what turns your crank, be grateful.

1242. Say, God, thank you so much for making this.

1243. You know, if it's a piece of nice big steak, a mousse steak, and you get to slice into it

1244. with your fork and knife and put it in your mouth, and don't feel guilty.

1245. Say, oh, God, thank you so much.

1246. There is a world where there are pleasures like this.

1247. Now, some of you might push back and say, George, okay, you say that, and that's good,

  1248. and I know your time's almost run out, but George, I don't know if that's, if, I don't

1249. know if you've really been fair to the Bible stories there, because, George, the very next

1250. story that takes place is Jesus driving people out of the market.

1251. Now, George, I know maybe you're going to tell me there's something different culturally

1252. about that, but generally, George, I love going to markets.

1253. Like, markets are often fun.

1254. Like, George, have you ever been to some of the markets, like in Halifax, on the waterfront,

1255. and you go in there, and there's all these really great foods, and there's great things

1256. to buy, and people are relaxed, and, you know, the water's there, and, you know, George,

1257. have you been to the market on a really good day here in Ottawa, and, yeah, I know there

1258. can be, you know, it can be a bit crowded and all that, but, you know, there's just a

1259. sense of life and bustle, and Jesus goes and ruins it all.

1260. Like, George, are you being consistent with what you say?

  1261. Well, let's look.

1262. Let's look at what goes on here very briefly in closing.

  1263. It's a page, it's verse 13.

1264. The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem, and the temple

1265. he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons and money changers sitting there,

1266. and making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple with the sheep and oxen,

1267. and he poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables, and he told those

1268. who sold the pigeons, take these things away, do not make my father's house a house of trade.

1269. His disciples remembered that it was written, zeal for your house will consume me.

1270. So, is Jesus here taking away fun?

1271. No, he's introducing God in another way.

1272. He's introducing God in another way.

1273. That's a pretty amazing picture up there, eh?

1274. There's Jesus over there with his whip.

1275. He's introducing God in a different way.

1276. Andrew, if you could put up the next point.

1277. Remember that in last week, we talked about how the way that God begins to introduce himself

1278. is by having Jesus be described as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

1279. And here we see the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

1280. He drives out all who keep pagans from coming to him.

1281. See, because that's what's going on here in the story,

1282. is that when Herod made his temple,

1283. one of the things is that after the Babylonian,

1284. after Jerusalem was destroyed in the 500s BCs,

1285. the Jewish people were scattered.

1286. And one of the byproducts of that is that many people who are pagans

1287. started to become enchanted with the idea, with the God of Israel.

  1288. And they became God-fearers.

1289. And for many of them, they didn't want to go the full distance of becoming Jews.

1290. Let me just be honest.

1291. If at my age, I want to become Jewish, I had to be circumcised.

1292. I would think really long and hard about that.

1293. Like, beyond long and hard.

1294. In fact, if there was a God-fearer option,

  1295. that's what I would choose.

1296. I know I'm not very holy, not very ascetic.

1297. I just said I like beef and all that stuff.

1298. But I would choose the non-circumcised route for me.

1299. And so when Herod rebuilds the temple,

1300. mindful of all of the Jewish scriptures,

  1301. the Old Testament scriptures,

1302. that God wants the nations to come and worship them,

1303. that the pagans are to know worship them,

1304. he creates this whole area as part of the temple grounds,

1305. but not the temple itself,

1306. where pagans could come and pray.

1307. They can't enter the actual temple building itself,

1308. but they could come to pray.

1309. And that's what was completely and utterly filled with animals

  1310. and money changers.

1311. The pagans couldn't come to pray.

1312. And so what we see here isn't that Jesus is a killjoy,

1313. but we see that the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world

1314. drives out all who keep pagans from coming to him.

1315. We see the loving heart of God.

1316. It's why, you know, in a couple of weeks' time,

1317. we're going to say Jeremy and Kendra,

1318. who left our congregation to be missionaries in Zambia,

  1319. they're with us today,

1320. but we're going to have early March.

1321. We're going to have more times for us to spend about it.

1322. But why do they leave here to go to Zambia?

  1323. Why?

1324. Well, because there's Zambians that God wants to come

1325. into a personal knowledge of himself.

1326. Why is it that maybe in February,

1327. we're going to bring in somebody and their family

1328. who are going to go plant a church in Jerusalem?

1329. Because God has people in Jerusalem

1330. who he wants to have know Jesus as their Savior and Lord.

1331. Why is it that we have sent out people to Asia and Central Asia?

1332. Because there are people in those countries

1333. that God wants to have come to a saving knowledge of himself.

1334. Why is it that we have a ministry on campus?

1335. It's because there are university students

1336. that God wants to have know Jesus.

1337. Why are we thinking of starting another congregation in Kanata

  1338. or Sunday evening?

1339. Because God has more people in this city

1340. that he wants to have come to him.

1341. And this is showing the missionary loving heart of God.

1342. So just sort of wrapping this up,

1343. if you could put up the next point, please.

  1344. Oh, sorry.

1345. Just while that point stays up there,

1346. listen to what Jesus says after this,

  1347. he clears the temple.

  1348. Verse 18,

1349. The Jews said to Jesus,

1350. what sign do you show us for doing these things?

  1351. And Jesus said,

  1352. destroy this temple,

1353. and in three days I will raise it up.

1354. The Jewish leader said then,

  1355. basically full of scorn,

  1356. listen, Jesus,

1357. 46 years this work's been going on,

  1358. it's still not built,

1359. you're going to raise it up in three days?

  1360. Like baloney.

1361. But Jesus was speaking about the temple of his body.

1362. And when therefore he was raised from the dead,

1363. his disciples remembered that he had said this,

1364. and they believed that the scriptures

1365. and the word that Jesus had spoken.

1366. The temple is where in Jesus' day,

1367. I went to meet with God.

1368. Jesus is revealing that he is now where I go

  1369. to meet with God.

  1370. Next point.

1371. The temple in Jesus' day

1372. is where I needed to go

1373. and offer the necessary sacrifice

1374. so that I could be near to God.

1375. Jesus is the once for all sacrifice

  1376. provided by God himself

1377. so that I can live at home

1378. in God's presence into eternity.

  1379. See, that's why it's so significant

  1380. that he says,

  1381. he's first introduced in John 1

1382. as the Lamb of God

1383. who takes away the sin of the world.

1384. The implication is that God himself

1385. is providing a once for all means

1386. by which we can be made right with him

1387. if we receive it by faith.

1388. And it's not just that Jesus does this

1389. to make us right with God,

1390. but Jesus is also where we go to meet with God.

1391. He is both God's means

1392. to make us right with him

1393. and it's where we go to meet with God.

  1394. The final point, please.

1395. And the resurrection of Jesus

  1396. is the game changer.

1397. Jesus says it's the final sign.

1398. If you go through and you read John's Gospel,

1399. you're going to see that he keeps emphasizing

1400. different signs that introduce God,

1401. that point to God in very powerful ways.

1402. Jesus reveals that the final sign

1403. is his resurrection from the dead.

1404. It vindicates who he is.

1405. It vindicates the outrageous claim

1406. that he is where human beings

1407. can now go to meet with God,

1408. that he is the one

  1409. who introduces God correctly.

1410. It vindicates that he is, in fact,

  1411. the Lamb of God

1412. who takes away the sin of the world.

  1413. And it vindicates

1414. that he can still make people

1415. like you and me right with him.

1416. That for people like you and me,

1417. living in Ottawa in 2018,

1418. no matter how it is

1419. that it seems that the culture is going,

1420. that we can meet with Jesus,

1421. we can be reconciled with God,

1422. and as we go through our daily life,

1423. we should not think that God is small

1424. and that Ottawa is big,

  1425. Hollywood is big,

  1426. Trudeau is big,

  1427. Trump is big,

  1428. Apple is big,

  1429. secularism is big.

  1430. No, God is big.

  1431. He creates planets,

1432. he holds them in his hands,

  1433. he changes human history,

  1434. he changes human hearts.

  1435. And I'm introduced

1436. to be reconciled to God,

1437. to live at home with God,

1438. and live my day-to-day life

1439. knowing that God is big,

1440. and everything I face is small.

  1441. Please stand.

1442. Just before I pray in closing,

  1443. just remind you that,

  1444. remember this,

  1445. one of the things

  1446. which is so wonderful

1447. about the story of Jesus

1448. throwing out the money changers

1449. is that it's the Lamb of God

1450. who takes away the sin of the world,

  1451. and he's the one

  1452. removing the barriers

1453. so that pagans can come to know him.

1454. If you have not given your life to Jesus,

1455. he wants to know you.

1456. He's not waiting for you

  1457. to lose weight.

1458. He's not waiting for you

  1459. to become more ascetic.

1460. He's not waiting for you

  1461. to become more holy.

  1462. He's the one

  1463. who's dealt with all

1464. that keeps us far from God.

1465. He's dealt with all of that,

1466. and he longs for you

  1467. to bend the knee

1468. and to call out to him

  1469. and say,

  1470. Jesus,

1471. may you be for me

  1472. the Lamb of God

1473. who takes away my sin.

1474. May you be for me

  1475. the one

1476. who makes me right with God.

1477. May you be the one

1478. by whom I can walk

  1479. and follow

  1480. and live my days

  1481. learning from you.

1482. May you be the one

1483. who is my Savior and my Lord.

1484. There is no time better than today

1485. to make such a call

1486. and cry out to God.

1487. Let's bow our heads in prayer.

  1488. Father,

1489. we thank you for Jesus.

  1490. Father,

  1491. we confess before you

1492. that we should know better,

  1493. but we slip into

1494. thinking bad things about you,

  1495. wrong things about you,

  1496. untruths about you.

  1497. Father,

1498. we slip into that so easily.

  1499. We project our hard-heartedness

  1500. onto you,

  1501. our anger-drivenness

  1502. onto you,

  1503. our lack of love

  1504. onto you,

  1505. our chaotic desires.

  1506. Father,

1507. we put those on you,

  1508. but Father,

1509. make us disciples of Jesus

1510. who are gripped by the gospel

1511. and are learning to know

  1512. who you are

  1513. as you've revealed yourself

  1514. through Jesus.

  1515. Father,

  1516. help us

  1517. to know you

  1518. through Jesus

  1519. and learn to live

  1520. knowing that you are

  1521. a big God,

  1522. bigger than our problems,

  1523. and freed up

1524. to live for your glory.

  1525. Father,

  1526. we ask these things

1527. in the name of Jesus,

  1528. your Son

  1529. and our Savior.

  1530. Amen.

  1531. Amen.

  1532. Amen.

  1533. Amen.

  1534. Amen.

  1535. Amen.

  1536. Amen.

  1537. Amen.

  1538. Amen.

  1539. Amen.

  1540. Amen.

  1541. Amen.

  1542. Amen.

  1543. Amen.

  1544. Amen.

  1545. Amen.

  1546. Amen.

  1547. Amen.

  1548. Amen.

  1549. Amen.

  1550. Amen.

  1551. Amen.

  1552. Amen.

  1553. Amen.

  1554. Amen.
