  1. Father, we confess before you that your word is so clear and so precise,

  2. and we confess before you, Father, that there is lots within us that do not like that type of clarity and precision.

  3. And we struggle, Father, with sin and with pride and with idols, and the clarity and precision of your word comes against the sin and the idols of our hearts.

  4. And so, Father, we wince and then we waffle and then we forget.

  5. And so, Father, we ask that just as your Holy Spirit caused your word written to be written,

  6. we ask, Father, that in your kindness and in your mercy, you would pour out your Holy Spirit upon us.

  7. Pour out your Holy Spirit upon us, Father, and bring your word deeply into the command center of who we are.

  8. And this we ask in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  9. Please be seated.

  10. So, once again this week, just by coincidence or providence, I had the great privilege to be able to go on Parliament Hill

  11. and speak to the Parliament Hill Christian Fellowship on Friday.

  12. They got to sort of get my early ramblings on this sermon.

  13. That's sort of the deal.

  14. And I'm not going to...

  15. If you ever go on Parliament Hill, not like in the main entrance, but to the side,

  16. where the actual Senate and some other members of Parliament, their business goes on,

  17. when you come to the security now, you're met by two...

  18. But you come to the door, you're met by two security guards.

  19. And so, one of them asks for my ID and see if I'm on the list that will allow me to get through the first door.

  20. And the other one, and I had a briefcase with me, says,

  21. Could you open your briefcase for me, sir?

  22. And then he says, as I'm opening, he said,

  23. If there's anything dangerous in there, you better warn me now as you open it.

  24. And I said, Well, the only thing dangerous in here is a Bible.

  25. I said, It's banned in about 50 countries.

  26. And he, without missing a beat, he said,

  27. Well, it's not banned here yet.

  28. You should be thankful.

  29. And anyway, we chatted while we were going in.

  30. And anyway, so we go in.

  31. This is Canada.

  32. It's not banned yet, according to the security guard.

  33. But I think he was a brother.

  34. I think he was hoping it wouldn't be banned.

  35. One of my coffee shop that I went to for a long time,

  36. I don't go to it anymore because the office is moved.

  37. The guy who owned the coffee shop, really great guy,

  38. a Palestinian Muslim from Jerusalem.

  39. And he's been in Canada for quite a few years.

  40. Very, very secular Muslim.

  41. And really great guy.

  42. I used to love talking with him.

  43. And one of the things he said to me all the time,

  44. especially if there's something bad in the news,

  45. he said, George, if you've lived where I've lived,

  46. you would say this,

  47. Canada is the greatest country in the world.

  48. That's what he said to me all the time.

  49. If you've lived where I've lived,

  50. Canada is the greatest country in the world.

  51. And I say that because the text

  52. that we're going to look at in a moment,

  53. it's very, very un-Canadian.

  54. In fact, it would make just about every Canadian wince.

  55. And I'm talking about Canadian Christians.

  56. We wince at its clarity.

  57. We wince at the fact that lots and lots of Christians

  58. are very comfortable with saying,

  59. I have no problem with Jesus.

  60. It's the church I have problems with,

  61. but this is Jesus speaking.

  62. And it just would be viewed by many, many people

  63. as a very hard text.

  64. In fact, I was just thinking about that.

  65. It might very well be that this is the first time

  66. you've ever come to a church.

  67. Maybe you got dragged here for some reason.

  68. Maybe you're on a bit of a religious quest.

  69. And the text that we're about to look at,

  70. it's on one hand a very, very stark and hard text.

  71. It really is.

  72. In fact, the reason that I called the sermon

  73. Walking in Truth in a Post-Truth World

  74. is because, partially it's the last verse,

  75. but it's partially just that this truth is so clear

  76. and it's so against our culture

  77. and it's so against the inclination of our hearts

  78. that we want to keep watering it down

  79. or nuancing it or forgetting it

  80. or going somewhere else.

  81. And it's even harder

  82. because we live in a post-truth world

  83. and this is a very hard text.

  84. So if you're a seeker

  85. or you've just come here for some reason,

  86. just bear with me as we go through this text.

  87. I mean, one of the things you can take away,

  88. hopefully you'll take a lot more away than just this,

  89. but one of the things you can do

  90. is that we don't hide anything about the Christian faith.

  91. We preach through the Bible.

  92. We go through the fine print, so to speak,

  93. and you get to hear what Jesus himself has to say.

  94. So let's look at the text.

  95. Turn in your Bibles to John chapter 2

    John 2 chapter mention

  96. and we're beginning at verse 23.

  97. John chapter 2, verse 23.

    John 2:23

  98. Last week, we looked at Jesus,

  99. the miracle of turning the water into wine

  100. and Jesus driving all the money changers

  101. and others out of the temple

  102. because he wanted pagans to be able to know

  103. about the God that he was introducing.

  104. And here's how the text then continues on.

  105. It goes like this.

  106. Now, when Jesus was in Jerusalem at the Passover feast,

  107. many believed in his name

  108. when they saw the signs that he was doing.

  109. And here the word signs means miracles.

  110. It's talking about the fact that miracles mean something.

  111. It's not just conjuring tricks that God has done,

  112. that conjuring tricks don't mean anything.

  113. They're just a matter of impressing.

  114. John is trying to emphasize that if it really is a miracle,

  115. it has meaning.

  116. And it also shows here that,

  117. as all of the gospel writers tell us,

  118. all of the biographies of Jesus said

  119. that Jesus performed lots and lots and lots of miracles.

  120. They just record a few of them.

  121. And that's what we see here.

  122. Jesus has actually only performed one miracle,

  123. and it wasn't even in Jerusalem.

  124. But here we see that even in Jerusalem,

  125. he performed lots of other miracles

  126. that they just aren't recorded.

  127. So we'll read that again.

  128. Verse 23.

  129. Now, when Jesus was in Jerusalem at the Passover feast,

  130. many believed in his name

  131. when they saw the signs that he was doing.

  132. But Jesus, on his part,

  133. did not entrust himself to them

  134. because he knew all people

  135. and needed no one to bear witness about human beings,

  136. for he himself knew what was in human beings.

  137. Now, did you notice this?

  138. This is just the mildest little bit

  139. of non-Canadian stuff in this text.

  140. In fact, what we're going to see with this text

  141. is that Jesus keeps doubling down.

  142. We think, wow, that's very un-Canadian.

  143. And then he doubles down.

  144. He makes it even more un-Canadian.

  145. And then he makes it even more un-Canadian.

  146. And then he makes it more un-Canadian.

  147. And why is this sort of an un-Canadian thing to say?

  148. Well, what is the thing that we want to say about people?

  149. You know, I might want to say to my kids,

  150. I believe in you.

  151. You know?

  152. What do I want to maybe say to my staff?

  153. I believe in you.

  154. You know?

  155. I believe in you.

  156. But what does the text here say about Jesus?

  157. Jesus says about people,

  158. I don't believe in you.

  159. Look, that's what it says here.

  160. Verse 24,

  161. But Jesus, on his part,

  162. did not entrust himself.

  163. And the word,

  164. we're going to talk about this a little bit later,

  165. but the word entrust himself

  166. is another way of translating the word

  167. believe or faith.

  168. It's another way.

  169. It's going to be very important later on

  170. that we sort of,

  171. it's sort of very interesting to understand

  172. that part of the meaning of having faith

  173. or believing in Jesus

  174. is to entrust yourself to him.

  175. And so when it says here in the text,

  176. but Jesus, on his part,

  177. did not entrust himself.

  178. He did not believe.

  179. He did not have faith in the people

  180. because he knew all people.

  181. And he needed no one to bear witness

  182. about human beings

  183. for he himself knew what was in man.

  184. Sounds like a cynical thing.

  185. As you'll see by the end of the text

  186. and what you would have seen

  187. if you'd been looking at the earlier weeks,

  188. if you could put up the first point,

  189. that would be very great.

  190. Because Jesus knows me,

  191. he does not believe in me.

  192. Because he loves me,

  193. he gave himself to save me.

  194. See, this is what stops it

  195. just from being a cynical text.

  196. Because all sorts of us

  197. don't believe in people.

  198. But it's a very Canadian thing to say.

  199. It's a very power of positive thinking.

  200. Say, I believe in you,

  201. I believe in you,

  202. I believe in you.

  203. It's sort of a shock

  204. to see that Jesus doesn't believe in us.

  205. He knows us,

  206. and because he knows me,

  207. he doesn't believe in me.

  208. But he knows me,

  209. doesn't mean,

  210. and he does something far better

  211. than believing in me.

  212. He knows what's in me.

  213. He knows I have idol issues.

  214. He knows I have sin issues.

  215. He knows I have darkness issues.

  216. He knows I have all sorts of things

  217. that betray people,

  218. that betray myself,

  219. that are self-centered.

  220. And so rather than believing in me,

  221. he gives himself for me

  222. and dies for me to save me.

  223. All I can say is,

  224. thanks be to God,

  225. he doesn't believe in me.

  226. And thanks be to God,

  227. he's not a cynic.

  228. Now,

  229. this is,

  230. this is just sort of a,

  231. I've taken something

  232. which could be

  233. very un-Canadian,

  234. it's still sort of a hard thing

  235. for us to maybe grasp.

  236. And because I've sort of told you

  237. the end of the text,

  238. we've sort of taken some

  239. of the sting out of it.

  240. And that's going to be

  241. a bit of a pattern

  242. all the way through this text

  243. is if you just bear with it,

  244. it's still going to be

  245. very, very stark.

  246. But some of the sting

  247. is taken out of it.

  248. But Jesus is going to

  249. keep pressing into

  250. this particular issue

  251. in very, very stark ways.

  252. And in fact,

  253. it comes up very next

  254. because although

  255. he's called a Pharisee,

  256. really what you see

  257. in the very next little bit

  258. is Jesus meets a Canadian.

  259. Jesus meets a Canadian

  260. professor of religion.

  261. He meets a Canadian journalist.

  262. He meets a Canadian politician.

  263. You might not realize

  264. that he meets a Canadian,

  265. but just listen

  266. and you'll see.

  267. Look at what happens

  268. in chapter 3, verse 1.

  269. Now there was a man

  270. of the Pharisees

  271. named Nicodemus,

  272. a ruler of the Jews.

  273. George, that doesn't sound

  274. very Canadian.

  275. Just wait.

  276. This man came to Jesus

  277. by night and said to him,

  278. Rabbi, teacher,

  279. in other words,

  280. we know that you are

  281. a teacher come from God

  282. for no one can do

  283. these signs that you do

  284. unless God is with them.

  285. Now just pause.

  286. That is an unbelievably

  287. Canadian statement

  288. about Jesus.

  289. If you were to say

  290. at the University of Ottawa,

  291. Jesus is a teacher

  292. come from God.

  293. They go, okay, yeah?

  294. But that turns your crank.

  295. Mohammed is a teacher

  296. comes from God, you know?

  297. Krishna, you know?

  298. You would not raise

  299. a single eyebrow

  300. in any editorial room

  301. or any university faculty

  302. by making a statement

  303. that Jesus is a teacher

  304. come from God.

  305. Now, you know,

  306. the atheists and all

  307. might say,

  308. well, yeah, yeah,

  309. blah, blah, blah, woof, woof.

  310. But, you know,

  311. basically as long as

  312. it's an innocuous statement

  313. like that,

  314. that's a completely

  315. fine statement

  316. in any coffee shop

  317. in Canada.

  318. It doesn't matter

  319. if it's a Bridgehead

  320. or a Tim Hortons.

  321. It doesn't matter.

  322. It's just,

  323. it's a very,

  324. very Canadian statement.

  325. Nicodemus comes to Jesus

  326. and says,

  327. Jesus,

  328. you're a teacher.

  329. You're a teacher

  330. comes from God.

  331. You do mighty things

  332. that only God can do.

  333. And we'd all say that's,

  334. I mean,

  335. what could you say to that?

  336. What does Jesus say to it?

  337. Jesus,

  338. well,

  339. Jesus goes in a very,

  340. very,

  341. very odd direction.

  342. Look what he says

  343. in response to it.

  344. And it's very interesting.

  345. It says,

  346. Jesus answered him.

  347. And you might say to yourself,

  348. one moment,

  349. Nicodemus didn't ask a question.

  350. But what Jesus is doing

  351. is answering the claim.

  352. He's answering the claim.

  353. He's not answering the question.

  354. He's answering or responding

  355. to the claim,

  356. the good Canadian claim

  357. that Jesus is a teacher

  358. come from God.

  359. and he says,

  360. verily,

  361. verily,

  362. or truly,

  363. truly,

  364. it's a very important statement

  365. in John's gospel.

  366. It can also be translated

  367. as amen,

  368. amen.

  369. It means,

  370. pay attention

  371. to what I'm about to say.

  372. This is the solemn truth,

  373. the whole truth,

  374. nothing but the truth.

  375. This is world-changing,

  376. absolutely important stuff

  377. that I'm about to say to you.

  378. Truly,

  379. truly,

  380. I say to you,

  381. unless

  382. one is born again,

  383. he cannot see

  384. the kingdom of God.

  385. Could you put that up

  386. on the screen,

  387. please?

  388. That's the next point.

  389. And we need to have

  390. the artwork in between

  391. as well,

  392. right?

  393. But Jesus says,

  394. truly,

  395. truly,

  396. unless

  397. one is born again,

  398. he cannot

  399. see the kingdom of God.

  400. Do you sort of notice

  401. that's an unbelievably,

  402. from a Canadian point of view,

  403. that's an unbelievably

  404. angular,

  405. absolute,

  406. exclusive statement.

  407. Now,

  408. those of you who come

  409. to the church

  410. more than once

  411. know that often I'll say

  412. when we come to a very

  413. difficult text

  414. that if you know

  415. the original language,

  416. the Hebrew or the Greek,

  417. it gives it a bit of a

  418. different nuance

  419. or a flavor.

  420. And this might be

  421. the place where I would say

  422. that if you knew

  423. the original language,

  424. it gives it a different flavor,

  425. but actually,

  426. it's,

  427. that's a,

  428. if you could go back

  429. to the point,

  430. that's a,

  431. that's a perfectly

  432. accurate

  433. translation

  434. of the original language.

  435. Unless

  436. one is born again,

  437. he cannot

  438. see the kingdom of God.

  439. that's

  440. just a very,

  441. very hard

  442. stain

  443. to say

  444. in Canada.

  445. And

  446. it's hard

  447. for us to want

  448. to almost keep

  449. that in our mind

  450. when we think

  451. about loved ones

  452. who under

  453. no reasonable

  454. way or expectation

  455. would we think

  456. that they would

  457. be born again.

  458. Whatever that text

  459. means,

  460. we probably

  461. wouldn't think

  462. it was them.

  463. For maybe

  464. our parents

  465. or our

  466. brothers or sisters

  467. or our best friends

  468. or our co-workers,

  469. for people

  470. of different religions,

  471. it's

  472. a very,

  473. very,

  474. very stark

  475. absolute

  476. statement.

  477. unless one

  478. is born again,

  479. he cannot

  480. see the kingdom

  481. of God.

  482. Now,

  483. some of you

  484. might say,

  485. okay,

  486. well,

  487. George,

  488. that's really

  489. interesting.

  490. I mean,

  491. that's wow,

  492. whoa,

  493. whoa.

  494. And that's

  495. Jesus,

  496. right?

  497. That's not

  498. like these

  499. weird monks

  500. in the Middle

  501. Ages

  502. who got

  503. sex-starved

  504. and

  505. didn't eat

  506. enough

  507. and got

  508. delirious

  509. and came

  510. up with

  511. really,

  512. really

  513. kooky,

  514. crazy

  515. doctrines

  516. that we

  517. still

  518. foolishly

  519. believe,

  520. like this

  521. is Jesus

  522. speaking.

  523. But maybe

  524. this is just

  525. the beginning

  526. of a conversation

  527. and as

  528. the conversation

  529. goes on,

  530. Jesus is

  531. going to

  532. nuance it

  533. in different

  534. ways and

  535. bring in

  536. other ways

  537. of looking

  538. at it.

  539. He's just

  540. trying to

  541. catch our

  542. attention,

  543. George,

  544. the way you

  545. often try

  546. to catch

  547. our attention.

  548. Well,

  549. let's see

  550. what he

  551. does.

  552. Jesus is

  553. trying to

  554. catch our

  555. attention,

  556. but the

  557. hard part

  558. about this

  559. text,

  560. for us

  561. as Canadians,

  562. is that

  563. he keeps

  564. doubling down.

  565. Look at

  566. verses 4

  567. and 5.

  568. Jesus says

  569. unless one

  570. is born

  571. again,

  572. he cannot

  573. see the

  574. kingdom of

  575. God.

  576. So Nicodemus

  577. in verse 4

  578. says to

  579. Jesus,

  580. now by the

  581. way,

  582. the word

  583. born again,

  584. it's one

  585. of these

  586. times when

  587. some of

  588. your versions

  589. might say

  590. born from

  591. above.

  592. And in

  593. the Greek,

  594. the original

  595. language,

  596. it can be

  597. translated either

  598. way.

  599. It has a

  600. dual meaning,

  601. a double

  602. meaning.

  603. And so

  604. Nicodemus,

  605. rather than

  606. taking it

  607. that means

  608. being born

  609. from above,

  610. in other

  611. words,

  612. that God

  613. somehow

  614. gives you

  615. a birth

  616. different

  617. than your

  618. birth that

  619. you already

  620. had,

  621. Nicodemus

  622. takes it

  623. in this

  624. born a

  625. second time

  626. sense.

  627. And,

  628. you know,

  629. it's hard

  630. to know

  631. whether Nicodemus

  632. is just

  633. being a

  634. little bit

  635. picky here

  636. about,

  637. Jesus,

  638. why are you

  639. going off

  640. on this

  641. weird tangent?

  642. Listen,

  643. what you're

  644. saying doesn't

  645. really make

  646. any sense.

  647. And that's

  648. what Nicodemus

  649. in effect

  650. says.

  651. verse 4,

  652. Nicodemus

  653. said to

  654. Jesus,

  655. how can

  656. a man

  657. be born

  658. when he

  659. is old?

  660. Can he

  661. enter a

  662. second time

  663. in his

  664. mother's

  665. womb

  666. and be

  667. born?

  668. And at

  669. this point

  670. in time,

  671. Jesus said,

  672. yeah,

  673. I'm just

  674. joshing you.

  675. I don't

  676. mean it

  677. like that,

  678. you know,

  679. good on

  680. you for

  681. catching it.

  682. What does

  683. Jesus say?

  684. Jesus says

  685. in verse

  686. 5,

  687. Jesus answered,

  688. verily,

  689. verily,

  690. I say

  691. to you,

  692. unless one

  693. is born

  694. of water

  695. and the

  696. spirit,

  697. he cannot

  698. enter

  699. the kingdom

  700. of God.

  701. Notice that

  702. again?

  703. The unless

  704. and the

  705. cannot,

  706. he repeats

  707. himself.

  708. He says,

  709. unless one

  710. is born

  711. of water

  712. and the

  713. spirit,

  714. he cannot

  715. see the

  716. kingdom

  717. of God.

  718. Now,

  719. at this

  720. point in

  721. time,

  722. what a

  723. lot of

  724. us do

  725. is say,

  726. George,

  727. is that

  728. referring to

  729. baptism?

  730. Is he

  731. saying here

  732. that,

  733. is that like

  734. are the

  735. certain

  736. denominations

  737. and churches

  738. right,

  739. that you

  740. have to

  741. be

  742. baptized

  743. and

  744. at the

  745. same

  746. time

  747. that you're

  748. baptized,

  749. you receive

  750. the Holy

  751. Spirit and

  752. then you

  753. see the

  754. kingdom

  755. of God?

  756. Or is

  757. it just

  758. referring to

  759. the fact

  760. that water

  761. is a bit

  762. of an

  763. analogy

  764. for birth?

  765. And,

  766. and,

  767. I mean,

  768. just very

  769. quickly,

  770. it can't

  771. be referring

  772. to baptism

  773. for two

  774. simple

  775. reasons.

  776. There's more

  777. than that,

  778. but there's

  779. two simple

  780. reasons.

  781. In one of

  782. the,

  783. in the

  784. synoptic

  785. gospels,

  786. there's a

  787. very parallel

  788. type of

  789. phrase,

  790. identical

  791. phrase,

  792. but with

  793. a different

  794. word.

  795. Rather than

  796. water and

  797. the Spirit,

  798. it says

  799. fire and

  800. the Holy

  801. Spirit.

  802. And no

  803. denomination

  804. thinks you

  805. should be

  806. sprayed with

  807. a flamethrower

  808. so you

  809. can go to

  810. heaven.

  811. So why

  812. do you

  813. take water

  814. to mean

  815. baptism,

  816. but fire

  817. to not

  818. mean

  819. fire?

  820. It doesn't

  821. mean that.

  822. The second

  823. thing is

  824. Jesus in

  825. a moment

  826. is going

  827. to say

  828. to Nicodemus,

  829. listen,

  830. if you've

  831. studied the

  832. Tanakh,

  833. what we now

  834. call the

  835. Old Testament,

  836. you should

  837. understand what

  838. I'm talking

  839. about.

  840. And if

  841. Jesus is

  842. referring to

  843. baptism,

  844. which he

  845. doesn't

  846. make an

  847. ordinance

  848. until after

  849. his

  850. resurrection,

  851. then it

  852. would be

  853. completely

  854. unjust for

  855. him to

  856. complain that

  857. Nicodemus

  858. doesn't

  859. understand.

  860. And Jesus

  861. is never

  862. unjust and

  863. unfair.

  864. water.

  865. So it's

  866. not

  867. referring,

  868. it's

  869. referring,

  870. it goes

  871. back to

  872. different

  873. images in

  874. Isaiah and

  875. Ezekiel,

  876. how water

  877. gives life

  878. and water

  879. also cleanses.

  880. And unless

  881. the Holy

  882. Spirit comes

  883. into our

  884. life in a

  885. way that

  886. gives us

  887. life,

  888. unless the

  889. Holy Spirit

  890. comes into

  891. us in a

  892. way that

  893. cleanses

  894. us,

  895. and that's

  896. something that

  897. God does,

  898. unless that

  899. happens,

  900. we cannot

  901. see the

  902. kingdom of

  903. God.

  904. But here's

  905. the important

  906. reason here,

  907. here's the

  908. big thing,

  909. here's why I

  910. called the

  911. sermon Walking

  912. in Truth in

  913. a Post-Truth

  914. Culture.

  915. You see how

  916. the devil

  917. plays us?

  918. The devil

  919. plays us.

  920. How does he

  921. play us?

  922. In the

  923. commentary that

  924. I, one of

  925. the commentaries

  926. that I read to

  927. prepare for

  928. this, this

  929. just tried to

  930. figure out

  931. whether it's

  932. baptism or

  933. not, goes

  934. on for

  935. about ten

  936. pages.

  937. And why?

  938. Because there's

  939. Roman Catholic,

  940. Eastern Orthodox,

  941. Lutheran,

  942. Presbyterian,

  943. Evangelical Anglican,

  944. Baptist, all

  945. these different

  946. battles around

  947. this, and by

  948. the end of

  949. it, if I

  950. was not

  951. doing my

  952. job, by

  953. the end of

  954. it, I'd

  955. say, so

  956. that's why

  957. the Roman

  958. Catholics and

  959. Eastern

  960. Orthodox are

  961. wrong, and

  962. that's why

  963. the Anglo

  964. Catholics and

  965. the Baptists

  966. are wrong, and

  967. that's why

  968. we're right.

  969. And you know

  970. what we've

  971. completely

  972. forgotten?

  973. Unless you're

  974. born again, you

  975. cannot see the

  976. kingdom of God.

  977. devil will

  978. use the

  979. Bible to

  980. get us

  981. way

  982. sidetracked so

  983. we're no

  984. longer sitting

  985. under the

  986. sting of the

  987. text.

  988. And so I'm

  989. not going to

  990. talk about what

  991. the different

  992. views are.

  993. I want us to

  994. see how easy

  995. it is to get

  996. sidetracked away

  997. from this very,

  998. very, very

  999. stark statement

  1000. of Jesus.

  1001. And then,

  1002. if we keep

  1003. reading the

  1004. text,

  1005. because you

  1006. see, often

  1007. what will

  1008. happen in a

  1009. sermon is the

  1010. sermon will

  1011. stop right

  1012. there after a

  1013. long, long,

  1014. long sidebar on

  1015. baptism, and

  1016. we've completely

  1017. forgotten that

  1018. unless we are

  1019. born again,

  1020. born from

  1021. above, born

  1022. of the

  1023. Holy Spirit,

  1024. we cannot

  1025. see or

  1026. enter the

  1027. kingdom of

  1028. God.

  1029. But Jesus,

  1030. he doesn't

  1031. get us

  1032. sidetracked.

  1033. He keeps

  1034. going deeper

  1035. into it.

  1036. He keeps

  1037. doubling down.

  1038. Look at what

  1039. happens immediately

  1040. after that.

  1041. Verse 5.

  1042. We'll read

  1043. verse 5 again.

  1044. Truly, truly,

  1045. verily, verily,

  1046. I say to you,

  1047. unless one is

  1048. born of water

  1049. and the

  1050. Holy Spirit,

  1051. he cannot

  1052. enter the

  1053. kingdom of

  1054. God.

  1055. That which is

  1056. born of the

  1057. flesh is

  1058. flesh, and

  1059. that which is

  1060. born of the

  1061. Holy Spirit

  1062. is spirit.

  1063. That means in

  1064. this case it

  1065. is something

  1066. of the

  1067. Spirit.

  1068. Do not

  1069. marvel that I

  1070. said to you,

  1071. you must be

  1072. born again.

  1073. Third time,

  1074. you must be

  1075. born again.

  1076. The wind blows

  1077. where it wishes

  1078. and you hear

  1079. its sound, but

  1080. you do not

  1081. know where it

  1082. comes from or

  1083. where it goes,

  1084. so it is with

  1085. everyone who is

  1086. born of the

  1087. Spirit.

  1088. He comes back

  1089. to it again and

  1090. again and again

  1091. and again.

  1092. And here, by the

  1093. way, is if the

  1094. devil hasn't

  1095. completely sidetracked

  1096. us on baptism, now

  1097. with this, the

  1098. wind blows where

  1099. it is, that's

  1100. where the devil

  1101. sidetracks us

  1102. again and we

  1103. get off on this

  1104. long discussion

  1105. maybe about the

  1106. Pentecostals and

  1107. charismatics and

  1108. baptism and what

  1109. this symbolism

  1110. means.

  1111. And before we

  1112. know it, we've

  1113. completely and

  1114. utterly forgotten

  1115. the starkness of

  1116. the text.

  1117. If you could put

  1118. up the next

  1119. point, that would

  1120. be great.

  1121. In fact, when

  1122. Jesus says that

  1123. that which is

  1124. born of the

  1125. flesh is flesh

  1126. and that which

  1127. is born of the

  1128. Spirit is spirit,

  1129. in verse 6, what

  1130. he's saying is that

  1131. humans can only

  1132. produce what

  1133. humans can

  1134. produce.

  1135. I need what

  1136. only God can

  1137. do.

  1138. That's the word

  1139. flesh in this

  1140. particular case is

  1141. referring to human

  1142. beings in all of

  1143. our frailty.

  1144. And the fact of

  1145. the matter is, is

  1146. that whether it's a

  1147. human institution

  1148. like that, lots of

  1149. us human beings

  1150. together, what we

  1151. produce will be what

  1152. humans can produce.

  1153. In a sense, a

  1154. church without the

  1155. Bible and without

  1156. the gospel is no

  1157. different than a

  1158. mosque or a

  1159. synagogue or the

  1160. liberal caucus or

  1161. the conservative

  1162. caucus or the

  1163. CBC newsroom.

  1164. Well, just human

  1165. beings producing

  1166. what only human

  1167. beings can produce.

  1168. And everything that

  1169. human beings produce

  1170. is frail.

  1171. It'll pass away.

  1172. It will die.

  1173. It has marks of

  1174. rebellion and sin in

  1175. it.

  1176. And what Jesus is

  1177. reminding Nicodemus,

1178. and this is, by the

  1179. way, very important

  1180. in just a little

  1181. tiny thing, the

  1182. whole social justice

  1183. progressive movement

  1184. in the Western

  1185. world is a movement

  1186. that desires the

  1187. kingdom of God

  1188. without God.

  1189. And thinks it

  1190. knows how the

  1191. kingdom of God

  1192. without God will

  1193. come upon us.

  1194. And this text is

  1195. saying, you know

  1196. what?

  1197. What is human will

  1198. only produce what

  1199. is human.

  1200. Human beings will

  1201. never produce a

  1202. kingdom of God

  1203. without God.

1204. We need God to do

1205. what only God can do

  1206. because human beings

  1207. will only produce

  1208. that which is weak

  1209. and frail.

  1210. people.

  1211. Let's continue on

  1212. in verse 9.

  1213. Sorry, maybe I've

  1214. already...

  1215. So now Nicodemus

  1216. comes to the

  1217. point where he

  1218. now is asking a

  1219. very, very honest

  1220. question.

  1221. He's taken

  1222. back by what

  1223. Jesus has said

  1224. and he, in

  1225. verse 9, says

  1226. to him,

  1227. how can these

  1228. things be?

  1229. And Jesus

  1230. answered him,

  1231. are you the

  1232. teacher of Israel

  1233. and yet you do

  1234. not understand

  1235. these things?

  1236. Verily, verily, I

  1237. say to you, we

  1238. speak of what we

  1239. know and bear

  1240. witness to what

  1241. we have seen,

  1242. but you do not

  1243. receive our

  1244. testimony.

  1245. If I have told

  1246. you earthly

  1247. things and you

  1248. do not believe,

  1249. how can you

  1250. believe if I

  1251. tell you heavenly

  1252. things?

  1253. Just pause.

  1254. What he means

  1255. here by earthly

  1256. is things that

  1257. have happened on

  1258. earth, even if

  1259. they're spiritual

  1260. things.

  1261. He's really

  1262. referring to the

  1263. things that he's

  1264. already referred

  1265. to.

  1266. Now, heavenly

  1267. things, he's

  1268. going to explain

  1269. that right in a

  1270. moment.

  1271. No one has

  1272. ascended into

  1273. heaven except he

  1274. who descended

  1275. from heaven, the

  1276. Son of Man.

  1277. If you could put

  1278. up the next

  1279. point, that would

  1280. be great.

  1281. What Jesus is

  1282. saying here,

  1283. Jesus says that

  1284. he is not a

  1285. teacher come from

  1286. God.

  1287. He is God come

  1288. to teach and

  1289. save.

  1290. Remember I

  1291. said he's

  1292. going to keep

  1293. doubling down?

  1294. The typical

  1295. Canadian thing

  1296. will be to

  1297. pay a compliment

  1298. to Jesus because

  1299. Canadians, we

  1300. like to try to

  1301. get along together

  1302. with each other.

  1303. A typical

  1304. Canadian thing

  1305. would say,

  1306. Mohammed is a

  1307. teacher come

  1308. from God,

  1309. Jesus is a

  1310. teacher come

  1311. from God,

  1312. your yoga

  1313. instructor,

  1314. teacher come

  1315. from God,

  1316. or however you

  1317. want to put it,

  1318. but we want to

  1319. try to respect

  1320. it.

  1321. And Nicodemus

  1322. begins this

  1323. whole conversation

  1324. with his

  1325. Canadian

  1326. compliment to

  1327. Jesus, and

  1328. by this point

  1329. in time, after

  1330. Jesus is

  1331. completely and

  1332. utterly undermining

  1333. his Canadian

  1334. categories, he

  1335. even goes

  1336. further, and

  1337. that's the

  1338. point of him

  1339. saying,

  1340. verse 12,

  1341. verse 13,

  1342. no one has

  1343. ascended into

  1344. heaven.

  1345. In other

  1346. words, no

  1347. human being

  1348. has been able

  1349. to go right

  1350. up into the

  1351. very councils

  1352. of God and

  1353. grasp God by

  1354. the unaided

  1355. exercise of

  1356. their human

  1357. mind and

  1358. their human

  1359. power, no

  1360. one.

  1361. But he,

  1362. Jesus, is

  1363. one who is

  1364. descended from

  1365. heaven.

  1366. So what we

  1367. have,

  1368. Nicodemus,

  1369. here's this

  1370. big claim,

  1371. if you went

  1372. back in a

  1373. time machine,

  1374. John, in

  1375. many, many

  1376. ways throughout

  1377. the whole

  1378. gospel is

  1379. claiming that

  1380. he's just

  1381. telling you

  1382. what actually

  1383. happened, as

  1384. if he's in a

  1385. court of law

  1386. under oath.

  1387. And you

  1388. could go and

  1389. you would see

  1390. Nicodemus and

  1391. Jesus talking at

  1392. night, and

  1393. Jesus, without a

  1394. smile, without a

  1395. smirk, without

  1396. arrogance, he

  1397. says, I am not a

  1398. teacher from God,

1399. I am God, come to

  1400. teach and save.

  1401. This is a

  1402. pretty preposterous

  1403. claim.

  1404. If you could

  1405. put up the

  1406. next point, last

  1407. week we looked

  1408. at Jesus

  1409. predicting his

  1410. resurrection.

  1411. In a few

  1412. moments we're

  1413. going to see

  1414. Jesus predicting

  1415. his crucifixion.

  1416. But here's the

  1417. big claim, I'm

  1418. not going to

  1419. get into much

  1420. of an

  1421. apologetic around

  1422. it, but this

  1423. is what the

  1424. whole Christian

  1425. faith stands

  1426. and falls on in

  1427. terms of being a

  1428. reasonable thing.

  1429. Why should we

  1430. take any of this

  1431. seriously?

  1432. I mean, quite

  1433. literally, you

  1434. could go down to

  1435. the Shepherds of

  1436. Good Hope, you

  1437. could go down to

  1438. the Union Mission

  1439. and you would

  1440. meet all sorts of

  1441. people who would

  1442. think they are

  1443. somebody like

  1444. Jesus or God.

  1445. I would bet

  1446. there's at least

  1447. a thousand people

  1448. in Ottawa who

  1449. think that they're

  1450. God.

  1451. And I don't mean

  1452. any type of, you

  1453. know, just the way

  1454. your boss, she

  1455. might think she's

  1456. God or he might

  1457. think he's God or

  1458. acts like that.

  1459. No, I mean, they

  1460. actually probably

  1461. would say to you

  1462. with a completely

  1463. serious face, you

  1464. should worship me, I'm

  1465. God.

  1466. I mean, there's

  1467. probably all sorts of

  1468. people in Ottawa.

  1469. But if the

  1470. resurrection of Jesus

  1471. happened, then who he

1472. is and what he says is

  1473. vindicated.

  1474. If he was not

  1475. resurrected, what he

  1476. says is garbage.

1477. Just as if you went

  1478. down to the Royal

  1479. Ottawa or the

  1480. psychiatric ward of

  1481. the civic or the

  1482. Union Mission or the

  1483. Salvation Army or the

  1484. Shepherds of Good

  1485. Hope and somebody

  1486. said, they're God,

  1487. you would know it's

  1488. garbage.

  1489. Jesus keeps doubling

  1490. down.

1491. Now, in the 10 or

  1492. 11 minutes I have

  1493. left, Jesus starts to

  1494. unpack this in both

  1495. very hopeful and

  1496. very, very

  1497. startling ways.

  1498. He's going to talk

  1499. a little bit about

1500. how it is that he

  1501. can make us born

  1502. again.

1503. If you could put up

  1504. the next image, yeah,

  1505. that's a pretty

  1506. gruesome one, eh?

1507. Jesus is now going to

  1508. talk to Nicodemus about

1509. a story in the Old

  1510. Testament that's

  1511. knack in Numbers

    Numbers 21 chapter mention

  1512. chapter 21.

  1513. Hear what he says.

  1514. It's in verse 15.

  1515. Actually, we'll do

  1516. verse 14, 15, and

  1517. 16.

  1518. And as Moses lifted

1519. up the serpent in the

  1520. wilderness, so must the

1521. Son of Man be lifted

  1522. up, that whoever

  1523. believes in him may

  1524. have eternal life.

1525. For God so loved the

1526. world that he gave his

1527. one and only Son, that

  1528. whoever believes in him

  1529. should not perish, but

  1530. have eternal life.

  1531. And he's making a

  1532. reference to a story

  1533. when Israel is wandering

  1534. in the wilderness, and

  1535. they've had a time of

  1536. particular complaint

  1537. against God, rebellion

  1538. against God, just

  1539. calling God names.

  1540. And part of the

  1541. judgment is that there

  1542. becomes these snakes that

  1543. come, and they're

  1544. poisonous snakes, maybe

  1545. adders.

  1546. And as they bite

  1547. people, they get sick

  1548. and they die.

1549. And they call out to

1550. God for mercy that God

  1551. would deliver them.

1552. And so God says to

1553. Moses, in the center of

1554. the camp, put up a big

  1555. pole.

1556. And on the pole, put an

1557. image, make an image of

  1558. the snakes that are

  1559. biting you and killing

  1560. you.

1561. And anybody who looks at

1562. the serpent on the top

  1563. of the pole,

1564. people, if you look, you

  1565. won't die, you'll be

  1566. healed.

1567. Story in the book of

  1568. Numbers, chapter 21.

    Numbers 21 chapter mention

  1569. And that's what Jesus

  1570. says about himself.

  1571. And it's a very, very

1572. powerful story if you think

1573. about it for a second.

1574. If the person who's bit by

1575. the snake looks to Moses,

  1576. they will die.

  1577. They look to their

  1578. parents, they will die.

  1579. They look to the

  1580. tabernacle, they will die.

1581. If they look to Joshua, they

  1582. will die.

1583. If they look at what God

1584. has said, the serpent on the

  1585. pole, they will live.

1586. How is this very relevant

  1587. for us?

1588. If you look to the church,

  1589. you will die.

1590. If you look to the bishop,

  1591. you will die.

1592. If you look to a ritual like

1593. communion or baptism, just as

  1594. rituals, you will die.

1595. If you look to praise music,

1596. if you look to Trudeau, if

1597. you look to your prof, you

1598. look to your mom, you look

1599. to your dad, you will die.

1600. If you look to Jesus, you

  1601. will live.

1602. If you look to Jesus, you

  1603. will live.

  1604. See, Jesus just keeps

  1605. doubling it down.

1606. If you could put up the

  1607. next point.

1608. In a very, very simple

1609. way, what is this looking

  1610. to Jesus?

  1611. What is this believing?

1612. You go back and you read

1613. through this whole text, you

1614. will see time and time and

  1615. time throughout John's

1616. gospel in this text, it

  1617. keeps telling you believing

  1618. in Jesus.

1619. It doesn't mean having an

  1620. idea about Jesus.

  1621. Demons have ideas about

  1622. Jesus that are more

  1623. accurate than yours and

1624. mine, but they are still

  1625. demons.

  1626. In a sense, it is a

  1627. believing into Jesus.

  1628. That's the actual

  1629. original language in the

  1630. original language.

  1631. It's entrusting myself

  1632. wholly to him.

  1633. It's believing that because

  1634. of his death and

  1635. resurrection upon the

  1636. cross, he has vindicated

1637. that what he says is the

  1638. truth.

1639. And that if I look to

  1640. him, believing what he

1641. says, if I look to him

1642. and entrust myself to him, if

  1643. I, in a sense, am just

  1644. entrusting myself into him,

  1645. believing into him, that's

1646. all I do, and he does all

  1647. the rest.

1648. In fact, if you could put up

  1649. the next point, please.

1650. I entrust myself to Jesus and

1651. what he accomplished for me,

1652. and then, that as we'll see

1653. in just this, which has

1654. already gone on, and in the

1655. next few verses, in the next

  1656. few minutes, what happens?

1657. What does Jesus say happen to

  1658. us?

1659. Like the image of the

1660. looking at the serpent is

  1661. it's a very powerful image

1662. that what happens is that

1663. something like a cross in the

1664. very center of the camp, that

1665. which, in a sense, is the

1666. sin, and is the punishment of

1667. the sin, and represents the

1668. sin, and by being a serpent,

1669. it even has a bit of a

1670. hearkening back to Genesis 3

1671. and the rebellion against God.

  1672. It's sin, it's the punishment

1673. of sin, and it's put upon the

  1674. on a pole.

1675. And Jesus will bear the penalty

1676. for my sins upon a cross.

1677. And so I entrust myself to

  1678. Jesus, that's all I do, and

1679. what do you accomplish for me?

  1680. I don't say, by the way, I've

  1681. been a missionary, I've been a

  1682. pastor, I've been a good dad,

1683. I'm really good looking, you

1684. know, I have a low body fat

  1685. count, I have a big bank

  1686. balance, I'm really cute, I'm

1687. funny, like it's nothing like

  1688. that.

1689. You just entrust yourself to

1690. Jesus, and what do you

  1691. accomplish for me?

1692. And this text says, you know

  1693. what happens?

1694. What is it that God does for

1695. us in the person of his Son?

1696. The penalty for all my sin is

  1697. paid.

1698. What happens when I put my

  1699. trust in Jesus?

1700. I am born from above.

1701. I am born of the Holy Spirit.

1702. I am born from God.

1703. What happens when I entrust

  1704. myself to Jesus?

1705. I receive that which only God

1706. can give, because my children

1707. will die, my grandchildren will

  1708. die, my great-grandchildren

  1709. will die.

1710. I cannot give them eternal

  1711. life.

1712. Only God can give me eternal

  1713. life.

1714. And when I entrust myself to

1715. Jesus, I receive eternal life.

1716. And in John 3, 16, when it

1717. talks about, for God so loved the

1718. world that he gave his one and

1719. only Son to the end, that whoever

1720. believes in him will not perish,

1721. but have eternal life, I begin to

  1722. know the uncreated, eternal,

  1723. unfailing love of God.

1724. Because that's the love of God.

  1725. It is uncreated.

  1726. It is eternal.

  1727. It is unfailing.

1728. Jesus doesn't believe in me,

1729. but this is what he gives me.

  1730. Let's finish the text.

  1731. Verse 16 again.

1732. For God so loved the world that he

1733. gave his one and only Son.

1734. By the way, when it says, for God so

1735. loved the world, what it's saying

1736. here, it has a double meaning.

1737. What it's meaning is, if you just

1738. think about this for a second,

1739. this is how much God loves you.

1740. God loves you so much that in he

1741. and the person of his Son comes

1742. down from heaven to die like a

1743. serpent on the cross for you.

1744. That is how much God loves you.

1745. His love is beyond the wildest

  1746. imagination of the greatest

  1747. narcissist.

1748. And at the same time, when we see

1749. Jesus dying on the cross, we can

1750. see this is, this we see now, God's

  1751. love for human beings.

1752. Just, you know, as an aside, you

1753. know, I'm not going to tell you a

  1754. spoiler alert.

1755. Just, it's not going to be a

1756. spoiler alert, but if you've ever

1757. watched one of the best series on

1758. war, like a movie, it's the Band of

  1759. Brothers.

1760. Those of you who have seen it, you'll

  1761. all say that's a spectacular series.

1762. In one of the last episodes, it's

  1763. called The Final Patrol.

  1764. And it's so, it's so interesting

1765. regardless to this, because what in

1766. what in the world is the normal way

1767. that things happen in the world?

1768. Like, should McGinty have been going

  1769. to jail or Livingston?

1770. Those of you who follow politics in

  1771. Ontario.

1772. But the powerful people don't die, the

  1773. little people die.

1774. The powerful people send the little

  1775. people to die.

1776. The Band of Brothers, the Final

1777. Patrol, the World War II is almost

1778. over, but the bigwigs send the lowly

1779. grunts out on a patrol that could get

1780. them killed and don't want to go.

1781. I'm not going to say anything else.

  1782. Watch the series.

  1783. It's a great episode.

1784. But that's the way of the world.

  1785. But what happens here?

1786. God himself dies, not the little

1787. people, but God dies for the little

1788. people because he loves you and loves

  1789. me.

  1790. Verse 16 again.

1791. For God so loved the world that he

1792. gave his one and only son that whoever

1793. believes in him should not perish but

  1794. have eternal life.

1795. For God did not send his son into the

1796. world to condemn the world.

1797. And the word condemn here, it's not

1798. meant the way condemn is used normally

  1799. in English.

  1800. Condemn, I'm sorry, I know it's going

1801. to touch on some things, but you know

1802. with his whole social media campaign

1803. of Twitter and condemning people and

1804. social media, it's very powerful.

1805. It just means that we put people down,

1806. we accuse them of things.

1807. Condemn here, it's a language of the

  1808. law courts.

1809. It's a language of what happens after

  1810. there's been a fair trial.

1811. And all of the evidence has been

1812. looked at and the judge declares you

  1813. guilty.

  1814. That's the language.

1815. It's not the emotional name calling

  1816. language.

1817. It's a language from the law court.

1818. Talk to some of the lawyers who are

  1819. present here.

1820. And even in perfect Canadian justice,

1821. but the trial has been through.

1822. All of the evidence has been

  1823. presented.

1824. All of the evidence is weighed.

1825. And at the end of it, the judge says

  1826. guilty or not guilty.

1827. And that's the language condemned.

  1828. Read it again.

  1829. Verse 17.

  1830. Verse 17.

1831. For God did not send his son into the

1832. world to condemn the world, but in order

1833. that the world might be saved through him.

1834. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, is

  1835. declared innocent.

1836. But whoever does not believe is condemned

1837. already because he has not believed in the name of

1838. the only son of God.

1839. And this is the judgment.

1840. The light has come into the world.

1841. And people love the darkness rather than the light

1842. because their works were evil.

1843. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light

1844. and does not come to the light, lest his works should be

  1845. exposed.

1846. Could you put up the next point, please?

1847. In your natural state, in my natural state, you hate the

1848. light and love the darkness.

1849. I mean, if you don't think that's true, just try to actually

1850. have a completely honest apology.

  1851. You've done something wrong.

1852. And how hard is it for you or me to actually give a full, honest,

1853. unvarnished apology with no insinuation that the other person

1854. contributed to it, no excuse, no extenuating circumstance.

1855. And if you're honest, it's something we rarely do perfectly, maybe never do perfectly.

1856. And even if we manage to get the words out perfectly, many of us inside of

1857. ourselves are hoping that the other person will acknowledge some responsibility

1858. because at the deepest level of our heart, we haven't fully come to the light.

1859. And so this text is saying in your natural state, you hate the light and love the darkness.

1860. So God gives you what you want and what you deserve.

  1861. Endless darkness.

1862. You have hated the light.

1863. You don't want the light in your life.

1864. When you die, you will go where there is no light.

1865. You have loved darkness and said darkness is your friend.

1866. And when you die, God says, I will send you to outer darkness.

1867. Can you put up the next point?

1868. This text as well is saying, that's the thing here about the light coming into the world.

1869. And it's a wonderful phrase from John.

1870. It refers to both conscience, the fact of a created order, of a moral order,

1871. of our different ways of knowing about God, all the different pointers that exist from God.

1872. It's what Paul talks about in the book of Romans.

1873. No one will have a valid excuse before God for rejecting him.

1874. No one will be able to say that there was not enough light from God

1875. or that he did not love us enough.

1876. If you could put up the final point, that would be great.

1877. If you could all stand.

1878. This is maybe one of the greatest verses in the Bible.

1879. It's Jesus speaking to you and me.

1880. What's just been said to us today is very, very, very, very, very, very stark.

1881. And it is really, truly telling us that apart from Christ,

1882. we are doomed to perish,

1883. to spend an eternity in endless darkness.

1884. But this is not God's heart for you and me.

1885. His heart for you and me

1886. is that we would humble ourselves

1887. and entrust ourselves to Jesus.

1888. For God so loved the world

1889. that he gave his one and only Son

1890. that whoever believes in him should not perish

  1891. but have eternal life.

1892. Friends, if you are here

1893. and you have not yet entrusted yourself to Jesus,

1894. there is no better time than right now, today,

1895. to entrust yourself to Jesus.

1896. Jesus is like, you know,

1897. if there was a perfect cure for cancer

  1898. that was just discovered

1899. and a doctor comes and gives you

1900. and he says, I have very terrible news,

  1901. you have cancer.

1902. In a sense, when he tells you that you have cancer,

1903. you are closer to health than before he told you that

1904. because before he told you that,

1905. you wouldn't have gone seeking a cure.

1906. And Jesus tells us how great is our danger and our doom.

1907. But he only does it in the context

1908. of how great God's salvation is

1909. for even the best and even the worst.

1910. There is no time better than now

1911. to entrust yourself to Jesus.

1912. And for those of us who have done that before,

1913. we don't have to keep entrusting ourselves to Jesus,

1914. but this is why the mission statement of this church

1915. is that God whose Holy Spirit will move in our lives

1916. so that we are disciples of Jesus,

  1917. gripped by the gospel.

1918. So we are freed up to live for his glory

1919. and to pray and to share to the end

1920. that our loved ones and friends will also come

1921. to a saving faith in Jesus Christ.

1922. Let's bow our heads in prayer.

  1923. Father,

  1924. we thank you, Father,

1925. that these really hard words are said to us

1926. by the one who died for us,

1927. the one who came from heaven to live amongst us,

  1928. to die for us,

  1929. that, Father,

1930. he is sharing his heart

1931. for everyone who is here

1932. and everyone that we meet,

1933. that he is not saying this

1934. to merely frighten us or depress us,

  1935. but, Father,

1936. that he is saying this

1937. to drive us to our knees,

1938. to drive us to throw our arms out wide

1939. and call out upon you

1940. to entrust ourselves to you,

1941. to entrust ourselves to Jesus.

  1942. Father,

  1943. may your Holy Spirit

1944. move in our hearts and lives

1945. that we will be disciples of Jesus

1946. who are gripped by the gospel,

1947. learning to live for your glory.

  1948. And, Father,

1949. give us a heart for the lost

  1950. and a boldness

1951. to bear witness to Jesus

  1952. here in Ottawa

1953. and to the ends of the earth.

1954. And we ask this in the name of Jesus,

1955. your Son and our Savior.

  1956. Amen.
