  1. Father, we ask that you would gently but deeply and powerfully pour out your Holy Spirit upon us now as we open your word.

  2. Father, we confess before you that we hide from you, that we run from you, that we judge you, that we turn our backs on you.

  3. And we give you thanks and praise, Father, that you seek us, you seek to bring life to people like us, that we might be worshipers in spirit and in truth, who trust you and honor you and welcome you and obey you.

  4. And Father, we need your help. So, Father, may your Holy Spirit be poured out deep within us and may the words, your word written, Father, may it be written in the very command center of our lives.

  5. And we ask this in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. In Jesus' name, amen. Let's be seated, please.

  6. Amen.

  7. Amen.

  8. So, I don't know, how many of you remember or have heard of Catherine Kuhlman? Okay, you've all aged yourself because I think she's been dead for 30 years or something like that, maybe even longer.

  9. But Catherine Kuhlman was a sort of a fascinating woman and she had an evangelistic ministry and she was a little bit like a female Benny Hinn.

  10. She went around doing miracles, like miracle services and I had only been a Christian for about a year or two and she came to Ottawa and at the time I had a summer job.

  11. The only time I actually have worked for any level of government and it was for the city of Ottawa, I worked in the section of the government where we processed your parking tickets.

  12. So, back then, if you had had a parking ticket that year, my hands were on it at one point in time.

  13. I moved it from one pile to another. I can't remember what I did.

  14. But anyway, so Catherine Kuhlman was coming and I'll be honest, I wanted to go and see a miracle.

  15. I'll be honest, that's what I wanted to do.

  16. I mean, that's how it was advertised, she was famous, I wanted to go see a miracle.

  17. I know, yeah, anyway, so I did.

  18. So, I went, there was a huge lineup and she filled like 10,000 people, 12,000 people, the Scotiabank place or whatever it's called now, wasn't built.

  19. And so, it was the old, you know, the underneath the Lansdowne Park, whatever that used to be called.

  20. And she filled that place and she's very dramatic and very flowery.

  21. And, you know, she had people coming up saying that miracles happened, but I didn't see anything happened.

  22. And I have to confess, I was very disappointed.

  23. This is just me sharing it with you. I was disappointed.

  24. When I got to work, during the, over the course of the May and June, the people in the office had discovered that I was a Christian.

  25. There were about 10 of us in the office. I was the only Christian.

  26. In fact, the others, none of them, I think most of them were sort of some type of Roman Catholic, but the type of Roman Catholic, they just basically went to Mass on Christmas and Easter.

  27. Or I guess when they'd maybe done something really bad and they felt guilty.

  28. But they basically, they didn't say they were Christians.

  29. They said they might have been Catholic.

  30. But anyway, so it came up that they knew that I was a Christian and somehow or another it had come up and they'd asked me different questions.

  31. And about a week or so after the Catherine Kuhlman event, it came up that one of the guys had gone to the Catherine Kuhlman event.

  32. And I said, oh, what did you think of it?

  33. He said, well, it was the weirdest thing, he said.

  34. I was sitting beside a woman and the woman had a disfigured arm.

  35. And as Catherine Kuhlman prayed, the arm went straight and I saw it.

  36. And I said, inwardly, I'm going, wow, I wish that was me.

  37. And he said, it was the darndest thing.

  38. And I said, well, what do you think it meant?

  39. I don't know.

  40. It's the darndest thing.

  41. Did you go to, like, are you interested in Jesus?

  42. No.

  43. It was the darndest thing.

  44. That's all he kept saying.

  45. It was the darndest thing.

  46. He was a, you know, one of those proper people of the old school who would never have said the DA, you know, the rest of it.

  47. He'd said darndest all the way.

  48. And the rest of the summer, he had no interest in talking to me about Christianity.

  49. To my knowledge, he never went to church once afterwards, but he saw what I want.

  50. He saw a miracle.

  51. Didn't do a difference to him at all.

  52. Now, I never saw him again afterwards.

  53. Who knows?

  54. Maybe he became a Christian later.

  55. But it made no impact on him other than that was the darndest thing.

  56. And I have had, over the years, I have had many, many people say to me, George, if God wanted me to believe in him, all he'd have to do is just do a miracle in front of me and I'd believe him.

  57. Like, if God wanted, like, if God either doesn't exist or he doesn't want me to believe in him because he doesn't do a miracle in front of me.

  58. I've had many people say that.

  59. And I have to confess, there's been times in my life I've wanted God to do some type of a miracle because I thought it would help my faith.

  60. So what's going on with all of this type of story?

  61. Like, many of us have this thing.

  62. Many of you could relate to it.

  63. Many of you might say you wish you could see a miracle.

  64. Maybe some of you have seen a miracle.

  65. I've actually had, maybe I'll tell you later on about it, I actually have more than once, but one very dramatic time that there was a miracle.

  66. But what's going on with our desire for miracles?

  67. Why is it that sometimes it just seems as if God doesn't do anything?

  68. Well, the story that happens in John's gospel is very helpful for us to understand what goes on with God, what he does, what he does, and why he doesn't do what he doesn't do.

  69. So if you turn to John chapter 4, we're going to read this story.

    John 4 chapter mention

  70. And it goes like this.

  71. So remember what I just said a little bit earlier, in the beginning of John chapter 4, God leads Jesus into a place where the people are semi-pagan, semi-Jewish, half-Jewish, half-Jewish, half-Pagan.

    John 4 chapter mention

  72. And they've been at enmity with the Jewish people, and the Jewish people have been at enmity with them for 800 years.

  73. There's an 800-year-long argument, and God sends Jesus into Samaria.

  74. He ends up initiating a conversation with a woman at the well.

  75. She ends up coming to believe in him, and she witnesses to the crowd, the village, many in the village come.

  76. And after two days of talking with Jesus, in verse 42, they say to the woman, John chapter 4, verse 42, they say to the woman,

    John 4:42

  77. It is no longer because what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.

  78. And after two days, the two days, he'd spent two days with them, he departed for Galilee.

  79. For Jesus himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own hometown.

  80. So when he came to Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him, having seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the feast, for they too had gone to the feast.

  81. Now just sort of pause there.

  82. Some of you are probably a little bit puzzled.

  83. Why does it say that he's not having any honor, and why does it say they welcome him?

  84. And is that a bit of a contradiction or what's going on?

  85. Well, it's a very, very important part of the story, which is going to be developed as we go on.

  86. But here's the first thing.

  87. If you could put the first point up, Andrew, that would be very helpful.

  88. The very important thing is that Jesus goes to where he is not honored.

  89. It's actually a really significant thing.

  90. We Canadians tend to think that, in fact, actually, we don't honor, I mean, you know, we just sort of, we want to go where we're honored.

  91. We don't like going where we're not honored.

  92. But Jesus intentionally goes to where he knows he is not being honored.

  93. And he doesn't go with a big stick.

  94. He doesn't go to sort of say, I'm going to beat these people up.

  95. I'm going to overwhelm them.

  96. I'm going to do things to force them to honor me.

  97. But it's just very significant that he goes where he's not honored.

  98. And it's an important thing for us to understand about the gospel, that what the gospel is all about,

  99. it is not about the human race crying out to God and saying, God, why are you abandoning us?

  100. Why are you leaving us all alone?

  101. Father, why are you doing this?

  102. Please come to us.

  103. We desperately need you to come to us.

  104. The gospel is not all about human beings crying out to God and saying, God, you know, please stop doing whatever you're doing.

  105. Stop just spending all your time with the Son and the Holy Spirit.

  106. Please come down to us.

  107. It's not like that at all.

  108. The heart of the gospel is that human beings do not honor God.

  109. And because we don't honor him, we don't really want God to come as God.

  110. But he comes anyway.

  111. And in the previous story, if you go back earlier, one of the things which we talked about this a little bit last week,

  112. is that it's not the case that human beings are really seeking after God,

  113. but human beings, we hide amongst our idols.

  114. We turn our back on God.

  115. We walk away from God.

  116. We run away from God.

  117. And God seeks us.

  118. The question never is for us to say to God, God, why is it that you have no interest in us?

  119. The question always should be, Father, why is it that I'm hiding from you amongst my idols?

  120. Because you are seeking me.

  121. And here we see this lesson continue to be taught, that Jesus willingly is going to where he is not honored, but he is welcomed.

  122. He's welcomed, but he's not honored.

  123. That's an important part of the dynamic of the story.

  124. But Jesus comes to us even when he is not initially honored.

  125. So, now some of you, you know, might say, okay, George, that's, well, that's sort of a very curious thing.

  126. I'm going to be interested to see how this all sort of, you know, all sort of develops out.

  127. But, like, I don't know, George, you'd sort of think that if they're welcoming Jesus and they're pretty excited to see him, that that's a good thing.

  128. You know, in fact, I like going places where I'm welcomed.

  129. And, but, you know, if you think about it for a second, and the word here, honor, doesn't mean that it's not like when Charlie comes here and we all go, oh, oh, oh.

  130. And there's a whole big line up to kneel and kiss his ring, and he just walks down the aisle slowly with his ring out, everybody rushing forward to kneel and kiss his ring.

  131. And if that's not going to happen, he's not coming, you know.

  132. And it's not like that at all.

  133. But it's a matter of recognizing you for who you are.

  134. That's, you see, that's sort of what is at the heart of this particular story.

  135. So, like, for instance, in one of the things which is complicated in relationships is, you know, when I first asked my wife out on a date,

  136. what happens in dates is you start to try to get to know the other person, yet you have an impression about the other person.

  137. And maybe you try to make, obviously, you try to make a good impression on your date.

  138. But as you're going on, it's not, what you really want in a marriage is you're looking for somebody who you believe that you can start to reveal who you are to them

  139. and that they will respect and honor who it is that you are.

  140. And in a marriage, we want somebody that we can reveal ourselves to, at least begin to reveal ourselves to,

  141. and they can begin to reveal themselves to us, and that we know them as they are.

  142. But if, in my relationship with Louise, I always relate to her in terms of thinking that she's like a different type of person,

  143. that's not going to build the relationship at all whatsoever.

  144. And so the dynamic that's going on in the text isn't that Jesus is sort of forcing himself to be honored,

  145. but he recognizes that they welcome him, but they welcome him in the same way that we might be very excited to find out

  146. that a really good magician was going to be able to be here and do all sorts of works of wonder.

  147. And Jesus just, he knows that they are trying to get something out of him, they just want to be dazzled,

  148. they just want to be amazed, that there's other deeper heart things going on,

  149. but fundamentally, they haven't caught on as to what the miracles mean and what his teaching means.

  150. But he goes there anyway.

  151. So what happens?

  152. Well, that goes on in verse 46.

  153. So he came to Cana in Galilee where he had made the water wine,

  154. and at Capernaum, there was an official whose son was ill.

  155. So Capernaum is about 35 kilometers downhill from Cana.

  156. And verse 47,

  157. When this man heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee,

  158. the man went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son,

  159. for he was at the point of death.

  160. The son was at the point of death.

  161. So Jesus said to him,

  162. And it's really important that you notice that what Jesus says here now is a plural you.

  163. Jesus makes a general comment about the people in Galilee.

  164. And it's a surprising comment, and it's a bit of an offense to the man and to the people who are listening.

  165. Or it's a very, they would probably take it as an offense.

  166. It's not meant as a compliment.

  167. It's meant as a description of what's going on in their lives, and it isn't good.

  168. And he says this,

  169. Unless you, or unless all you all, if you're from South Carolina or Georgia,

  170. or unless yous, if you're from Northern Ireland,

  171. unless yous see signs and wonders,

  172. yous will not believe.

  173. It's not a good thing.

  174. And the official responds to this by saying,

  175. Sir, come down before my child dies.

  176. Now, first of all, why is it that Jesus says,

  177. here is on one level, Jesus is performing miracles,

  178. but he says to them,

  179. unless you see signs and wonders,

  180. you will not believe.

  181. Well, first of all, if you think about it,

  182. the story that I began with, the fellow who worked in the office,

  183. he saw, from my point of view, quite a dramatic miracle,

  184. and it appeared to make no difference to him whatsoever.

  185. But there's sort of a different heart issue which is going on here,

  186. and if you could put up the next slide, Andrew,

  187. it would be very helpful.

  188. And the deeper issue that's going on,

  189. even the issue of seeing signs and wonders,

  190. is I think I have the criteria to judge and evaluate God,

  191. but God always ignores my criteria.

  192. I think I have the criteria to judge and evaluate God,

  193. but God always ignores my criteria.

  194. So this is a very, very common problem for many people today in our culture.

  195. Unless God, like if it really is God,

  196. God will bless the gay movement,

  197. or he'll bless the transsexual movement,

  198. or just in general, he'll bless the sexual revolution.

  199. Like the real God wouldn't do something

  200. that's going to interfere with how I want to express myself

  201. or identify myself sexually.

  202. For many people, if you read academic commentaries,

  203. at the heart of academic commentaries is this idea

  204. that if it's going to really be God,

  205. it's going to have to be some type of event

  206. that has multiple sources in non-biblical materials

  207. that allow it to be shown to actually have been happening in history,

  208. or that if it really is God,

  209. it's just going to be something private in my heart.

  210. And for many of us,

  211. we might have to say that if it's going to be something that's coming from God,

  212. it has to have not sort of a certain type of shape of the wisdom of the world,

  213. but it has to be some type of overwhelming thing.

  214. Like the people who said,

  215. if God really wanted me to believe in him,

  216. the criteria is that if God really is God,

  217. that he has to perform the miracle in front of me.

  218. We have some type of criteria

  219. by which we think we can judge and evaluate

  220. whether God is really God,

  221. or whether he is in fact up to our standards.

  222. Because that's what's at heart of it,

  223. that we have certain standards to keep,

  224. and God has to meet them.

  225. And one of the things that the Bible reveals about God

  226. is that God is completely and utterly untameable.

  227. He's good, but he's untameable.

  228. And God isn't like,

  229. if you come to my house,

  230. Louise has trained our German shepherd

  231. to close the door

  232. when Rocky comes in.

  233. She'll say,

  234. so Rocky comes in the house,

  235. the door is open,

  236. and she says,

  237. Rocky, close the door.

  238. And it's really funny

  239. because Rocky has also trained Louise.

  240. In the sense that Rocky then goes

  241. and sits down

  242. and puts his butt against the door.

  243. And he never closes the door

  244. all the way the first time.

  245. He closes it,

  246. but there's still about this much.

  247. And he looks at Louise,

  248. and Louise has to say a second time,

  249. Rocky, close the door

  250. all the way.

  251. And then Rocky closes the door

  252. all the way,

  253. and then he trots over

  254. to where he knows

  255. he's going to get a cookie from Louise.

  256. As a bit of an aside,

  257. sometimes when I'm there on my day off,

  258. Rocky keeps wanting to go out,

  259. and I say,

  260. Louise, he's only going out

  261. to get cookies.

  262. He keeps wanting to go out

  263. because he knows if he comes in,

  264. he closes the door,

  265. he gets a cookie.

  266. And when it's minus 30,

  267. and I'm grumpy,

  268. and I don't,

  269. I have dogs,

  270. not because I like dogs,

  271. but because I love Louise,

  272. and Louise loves dogs,

  273. so that's why we have dogs.

  274. That's why I have dogs.

  275. I'm not a dog person,

  276. but I married a dog person,

  277. and I love my wife,

  278. so I have dogs.

  279. Anyway,

  280. so I get a bit grumpy about it,

  281. but the dog is trained,

  282. Louise,

  283. but God's not like that.

  284. That's why God just ignores

  285. our criteria.

  286. And in fact,

  287. he is not going to allow

  288. us to continue

  289. to have the attitude

  290. that somehow or another

  291. we deign,

  292. we say,

  293. well, God,

  294. I guess you're worthy

  295. of hanging out with me

  296. because of all the miracles

  297. you've done

  298. or because you have

  299. my views on politics

  300. because I can now tell

  301. you don't like Trump

  302. or you do like Trump

  303. or you do miracles

  304. or you like the gay movement

  305. or you don't like

  306. the gay movement

  307. or whatever it is.

  308. He ignores our criteria.

  309. If you could put up

  310. the next point, Andrew,

  311. I am not God's superior

  312. or is equal

  313. that I can judge him.

  314. I am a creature

  315. in need of health

  316. and salvation

  317. from my creator.

  318. That's who I am.

  319. I am not God's superior

  320. or is equal

  321. that I can judge him

  322. or evaluate him.

  323. I am a creature

  324. in need of health

  325. and salvation

  326. from my creator.

  327. And if you could put up

  328. the next point, Andrew,

  329. saving faith

  330. does not set up

  331. conditions for God

  332. to meet.

  333. It responds to God

  334. as he chooses

  335. to make himself known

  336. by word and action.

  337. Right?

  338. Saving faith

  339. does not set up

  340. conditions for God

  341. to meet.

  342. It responds to God

  343. as he chooses

  344. to make himself known.

  345. And by the way,

  346. see, God is no different.

  347. This is just how it works

  348. for us as human beings.

  349. I can tell you

  350. if I had met Louise

  351. the first time

  352. and I began the date

  353. by saying,

  354. well, Louise,

  355. I have certain criteria.

  356. You have to reach

  357. my standards

  358. before I'm going to ask you

  359. out on a second date.

  360. That first date

  361. would have ended

  362. right then

  363. if I communicate to her

  364. that, you know,

  365. I have these very high standards

  366. and I have a checklist

  367. to see if you're going

  368. to meet them.

  369. End of the thing.

  370. So why is it

  371. that we can't do that

  372. with human beings

  373. on a date

  374. but we somehow

  375. unconsciously think

  376. we can do it

  377. with God?

  378. Even if the criteria

  379. are very noble

  380. or spiritual criteria

  381. like the ability

  382. of him to perform

  383. signs and wonders.

  384. It doesn't work

  385. with Louise.

  386. It definitely

  387. doesn't work

  388. with God.

  389. He says,

  390. I ignore your criteria.

  391. So what's happening

  392. in this story

  393. is that Jesus

  394. makes this general comment

  395. and that people

  396. only seem to want

  397. to see him

  398. perform signs

  399. and wonders.

  400. They only welcome him

  401. so that they

  402. can see signs

  403. and wonders.

  404. And so the Roman official

  405. who's come to have

  406. his son healed

  407. and really at this point

  408. in time

  409. the man doesn't

  410. have any faith.

  411. I had an uncle.

  412. His name is Uncle Joe.

  413. My favorite uncle.

  414. He died of cancer

  415. about 20 years ago.

  416. My Uncle Joe

  417. was a meat

  418. and potatoes

  419. type of guy.

  420. And it was meat

  421. and potatoes.

  422. type of guy.

  423. And preferably

  424. with gravy

  425. and all sorts

  426. of butter

  427. or something

  428. on the vegetables

  429. and gravy.

  430. He was a meat

  431. and potatoes guy.

  432. But when he got cancer

  433. and it was some

  434. very bad prognosis,

  435. he and his,

  436. he and my

  437. Aunt Lillian,

  438. they scoured

  439. the internet

  440. and stuff like that

  441. and for a brief while

  442. he was on all sorts

  443. of very kooky

  444. and extreme diets.

  445. Anything to try

  446. to make himself

  447. better.

  448. But they didn't work

  449. and now he's in glory.

  450. He's a very devout

  451. Christian.

  452. He's now with Jesus.

  453. But what this man is,

  454. he's not really

  455. seeking signs

  456. and wonders.

  457. He's just doing

  458. what any of us

  459. would do

  460. if we had something

  461. like an operable cancer

  462. or a kid had

  463. an operable cancer

  464. and if we heard

  465. that there was

  466. a treatment in Mexico

  467. or there was

  468. a treatment in California

  469. or there was

  470. a special diet

  471. that worked.

  472. We just want our kid

  473. to live

  474. and we're willing

  475. to try it.

  476. And Jesus makes

  477. this other comment

  478. and the man responds

  479. in verse 46.

  480. We'll read it again.

  481. The official said

  482. to him,

  483. Sir,

  484. come down

  485. before my child dies.

  486. In verse 50,

  487. Jesus says to him,

  488. Go,

  489. your son will live.

  490. Go,

  491. your son will live.

  492. And in other words,

  493. it's a command.

  494. The implication

  495. is not to go away

  496. but to go home.

  497. That's sort of implied.

  498. Go,

  499. your son will live.

  500. And the man

  501. believed the word

  502. that Jesus spoke to him

  503. and went on his way.

  504. We'll just sort of

  505. pause here.

  506. One of the interesting

  507. things about the Bible

  508. is it doesn't describe

  509. what goes on

  510. in the man's heart.

  511. And I don't know

  512. if he just sort of

  513. stands there

  514. and looks at Jesus

  515. for quite a while

  516. or if he just

  517. immediately goes.

  518. But Jesus says

  519. this surprising thing

  520. to him.

  521. Go,

  522. your son will live.

  523. And then the man

  524. believes what Jesus

  525. says.

  526. I don't know if he just

  527. somehow senses

  528. that there's some

  529. power or authority

  530. there.

  531. He himself has never

  532. seen Jesus

  533. perform a miracle.

  534. But there's something

  535. in Jesus' speech

  536. and we don't know

  537. if he immediately

  538. goes or spends

  539. some time

  540. but he does it.

  541. He begins the

  542. 35 kilometer trek

  543. downhill

  544. to go back

  545. to where his son is.

  546. And verse 51,

  547. as he was going down

  548. his servants

  549. met him

  550. and told him

  551. that his son

  552. was recovering.

  553. So the man

  554. asked them the hour

  555. when he began

  556. to get better.

  557. So the man

  558. hasn't kissed

  559. his brains goodbye.

  560. He's really curious.

  561. So he said,

  562. well,

  563. when did this happen?

  564. And they said

  565. to him,

  566. yesterday,

  567. so he would have

  568. had to sort of

  569. probably slept

  570. over somewhere,

  571. begun the journey,

  572. slept over somewhere,

  573. continued on the next day.

  574. They say,

  575. yesterday at the

  576. seventh hour,

  577. one o'clock

  578. in the afternoon,

  579. the fever left him.

  580. The father knew

  581. that was the hour

  582. when Jesus had said

  583. to him,

  584. your son will live.

  585. And he himself

  586. believed

  587. in all his household.

  588. This was now

  589. the second sign

  590. that Jesus did

  591. when he had come

  592. from Judea

  593. to Galilee.

  594. And the implication

  595. of the text here

  596. is that what this man

  597. does is he now

  598. has saving faith.

  599. Now,

  600. by the way,

  601. this is a very,

  602. very encouraging thing

  603. for each one of us.

  604. This man does not

  605. know very much theology.

  606. And Jesus hasn't

  607. died on the cross

  608. for him yet.

  609. And he has no idea

  610. about theories

  611. of propitiation.

  612. He has no ideas

  613. about theories

  614. of atonement.

  615. He just,

  616. he doesn't know

  617. all of these things.

  618. But what he's,

  619. what he's done

  620. is he's honored,

  621. trusted,

  622. and obeyed Jesus

  623. for who he is

  624. to the extent

  625. that he understands

  626. him at that time.

  627. He,

  628. he has this basic sense

  629. that Jesus

  630. has the authority

  631. and the ability

  632. that he is,

  633. he's not just ordinary,

  634. he believes

  635. in a saving way.

  636. In fact,

  637. see,

  638. one of the things

  639. which is remarkable

  640. about this,

  641. so I'll tell you

  642. my most dramatic

  643. miracle story.

  644. Not that,

  645. and my faith

  646. isn't based on it.

  647. I was in my country parish

  648. and I was in a,

  649. Eganville,

  650. and I was on call

  651. for the minister

  652. in Renfrew.

  653. And Renfrew

  654. was a half hour drive.

  655. The hospital

  656. was a half hour drive.

  657. And I got a call

  658. at about 7.30

  659. in the morning

  660. on a Sunday

  661. because I was on call

  662. for the minister

  663. on holidays

  664. and they said,

  665. there's a man,

  666. he's going to die.

  667. We almost didn't even

  668. call you

  669. because he's about

  670. to die,

  671. but the family

  672. have asked

  673. that I call you

  674. and that you could

  675. come down

  676. and give him

  677. the last rites.

  678. And I said,

  679. I'm really sorry,

  680. I have a service

  681. in 15 minutes

  682. and after that

  683. I have another service

  684. at 9,

  685. another service

  686. at 11.

  687. The earliest

  688. I can possibly

  689. come down

  690. is about 1 or 1.30

  691. this afternoon.

  692. And they said to me,

  693. well,

  694. we really insist,

  695. the family really wants you.

  696. And I said,

  697. I'm really,

  698. really sorry,

  699. I can't leave

  700. all of my services

  701. to go down.

  702. I'll say a prayer

  703. for him

  704. and I'll call you

  705. after my last service

  706. and if he's still

  707. hanging on

  708. I'll come right down

  709. to be with him.

  710. And so I prayed

  711. for the man

  712. and then I did

  713. my services

  714. and we mentioned him

  715. in all of the prayers.

  716. 12.30 or whatever it was

  717. when my 11 o'clock

  718. service was finished

  719. I called him up

  720. and he said,

  721. he's still hanging on,

  722. we can't believe

  723. that he's still hanging on,

  724. the family's exhausted,

  725. could you still come down?

  726. I said,

  727. sure,

  728. I'll come down.

  729. They said,

  730. he might be dead

  731. by the,

  732. we don't even like calling now,

  733. we're amazed he's still alive,

  734. you might very well

  735. come down for nothing.

  736. They said,

  737. I'll come down.

  738. I come down,

  739. the family's still there,

  740. I say a few words to them

  741. and I always pray

  742. what I always pray,

  743. I pray over the man,

  744. I said,

  745. Father,

  746. this man is close to death

  747. but I ask that

  748. if it still is your will

  749. that you would bring him healing

  750. and if you don't bring him healing

  751. of his body,

  752. Father,

  753. he's unconscious,

  754. he can't hear me

  755. but I know that Jesus can be

  756. underneath this coma

  757. and Jesus can meet him

  758. in his coma

  759. so Father,

  760. even if you do not heal his body,

  761. may your son Jesus

  762. be present with him

  763. where he is,

  764. where we can't reach him

  765. and may Jesus,

  766. may you bring,

  767. may you minister to him

  768. at this time,

  769. may he be prepared

  770. to see you face to face

  771. but if it is your will

  772. may you heal him

  773. and I say amen

  774. and the man said,

  775. thank you very much

  776. and his wife and daughter

  777. started crying

  778. and I can tell you right then

  779. they weren't interested

  780. in me anymore

  781. because they hugged

  782. their husband and their dad

  783. and they hugged their husband

  784. and their dad

  785. and he lived another three years

  786. so that's my miracle story

  787. but here's the thing

  788. I pray to God

  789. to heal the man

  790. I acknowledge

  791. that only God can heal

  792. and I acknowledge

  793. that only Jesus can be

  794. with this guy where he is

  795. I'm nothing

  796. I have no power

  797. all I can do

  798. is call out

  799. to my heavenly father

  800. this story

  801. Jesus just wills

  802. the healing

  803. of the nobleman's son

  804. 35 kilometers away

  805. and he's healed

  806. only God can do that

  807. Jesus doesn't pray

  808. he just wills it

  809. and I'm guessing

  810. that's partially

  811. what struck this man

  812. why

  813. maybe in heaven

  814. we'll find

  815. we'll get to meet this guy

  816. and we'll ask him

  817. what went on in his mind

  818. the story doesn't tell us

  819. but there's just something

  820. about the word of command

  821. and the promise

  822. that Jesus makes

  823. and the man responds

  824. with obedience

  825. obedience

  826. and trust

  827. and goes

  828. and when he goes

  829. he finds out

  830. that Jesus

  831. has healed the guy

  832. and now he has

  833. a saving belief

  834. in the man

  835. see here's one of the things

  836. about signs and wonders

  837. you can't obey a miracle

  838. you can't obey a miracle

  839. but you can obey Jesus

  840. when he says

  841. go

  842. your son will live

  843. if Jesus

  844. only died on the cross

  845. and rose from the dead

  846. and there was no message

  847. about it

  848. you know all we could say

  849. in the room

  850. that's the darndest thing

  851. that's the darndest thing

  852. Louise

  853. there's a guy who died

  854. and three days later

  855. he came back to life

  856. that's the darndest thing

  857. but what Jesus does

  858. and John's gospel

  859. is it's Jesus's

  860. it's John's writing

  861. an intimate biography

  862. of Jesus

  863. and John has chosen

  864. certain key miracles

  865. of Jesus

  866. he understands

  867. that Jesus has come

  868. to introduce God

  869. to make God

  870. truly known

  871. and his first miracle

  872. shows that God

  873. is not like religion

  874. expects

  875. that God is going

  876. to be a God

  877. where we have to be ascetic

  878. and we have to purify

  879. our lives

  880. and we have to sort of

  881. take all of the joy

  882. and happiness

  883. out of our life

  884. and if we've really

  885. purified ourselves

  886. and really denied ourselves

  887. then maybe God

  888. will know us

  889. and maybe he will

  890. make himself known

  891. and Jesus introduces God

  892. as the God

  893. who makes wine

  894. for a wedding party

  895. and unlike all

  896. of the other gospels

  897. almost immediately

  898. after the very

  899. John chapter 2

    John 2 chapter mention

  900. for the first time

  901. Jesus says

  902. if you kill me

  903. I will rise

  904. and he doesn't just say

  905. that I will rise

  906. he describes himself

  907. as the temple

  908. as the place

  909. that people go

  910. to meet God

  911. and he said

  912. if you kill me

  913. on three days

  914. the place

  915. where people

  916. will go

  917. to meet God

  918. will rise

  919. in three days

  920. and then the very

  921. next miracle

  922. that he does

  923. the next conversation

  924. is he says

  925. to Nicodemus

  926. he says to Nicodemus

  927. you have to be born

  928. in a way

  929. that only God

  930. can give you life

  931. human beings

  932. can only produce

  933. what human beings

  934. can produce

  935. but God

  936. can give a life

  937. that human beings

  938. cannot have

  939. and then in John

    John 4 chapter mention

  940. chapter 4

  941. the very very next thing

  942. what is it

  943. he describes

  944. to the woman

  945. he says to the woman

  946. at the well

  947. he says to the woman

  948. well if you knew

  949. who was asking you

  950. for water

  951. you would ask him

  952. and he would give you

  953. a stream

  954. of eternal life

  955. living waters

  956. like a stream

  957. of waters

  958. that will flow

  959. in you

  960. into eternity

  961. and now

  962. we see that God

  963. it's a continuing

  964. this message

  965. that God

  966. is pro-life

  967. that God

  968. is the source

  969. of health

  970. and life

  971. other gospels

  972. talk about Jesus

  973. and they use

  974. other images

  975. of salvation

  976. they use images

  977. of being redeemed

  978. freed from slavery

  979. they use images

  980. of being taken

  981. our debts away

  982. they use images

  983. from the courts

  984. they use military images

  985. of victory

  986. and in John's

  987. fundamental image

  988. is that apart

  989. from God

  990. we are dying

  991. and death

  992. is our doom

  993. and apart

  994. from God

  995. not only

  996. is death

  997. our doom

  998. but that

  999. which causes

  1000. death

  1001. which is our

  1002. separation

  1003. and alienation

  1004. from God

  1005. there is no

  1006. fixing of that

  1007. and in John's

  1008. gospel

  1009. the image

  1010. of being sick

  1011. and being healed

  1012. is the image

  1013. of what the gospel

  1014. will do for us

1015. if you could put up

  1016. the next slide

  1017. oh sorry

1018. I got something out of it

  1019. here's the thing

  1020. about this

  1021. I can have obedience

  1022. without intimacy

  1023. or trust

  1024. in fact

  1025. that's what

  1026. Islam is

  1027. Islam is the first

  1028. half of that statement

  1029. no intimacy

  1030. with God

  1031. and not even

  1032. trusting God

  1033. inshallah

  1034. inshallah

  1035. maybe I'm going to

  1036. die a gruesome death

  1037. inshallah

1038. maybe I'm going to hell

  1039. inshallah

  1040. it's obedience

  1041. but no intimacy

  1042. and trust

  1043. but I cannot

  1044. have intimacy

  1045. without trust

  1046. and obedience

  1047. and God

  1048. is not only

  1049. calling us

  1050. to life

  1051. but to intimacy

  1052. with him

  1053. which is why

  1054. mere signs

  1055. and wonders

  1056. isn't enough

  1057. you see

  1058. if I

  1059. am to have

  1060. intimacy

  1061. with Louise

  1062. and I never

  1063. trust her

  1064. she's going to

  1065. draw back

  1066. there's not going

  1067. to be any

  1068. intimacy

  1069. and if I want

  1070. to have intimacy

  1071. with Louise

  1072. and I never

  1073. trust her

  1074. and she never

  1075. asks me

  1076. and every time

  1077. she asks me

  1078. to do something

  1079. I don't do it

  1080. she's going to

  1081. draw back

  1082. there'll be no

  1083. intimacy

  1084. and God

  1085. wants us

  1086. to be intimate

  1087. with him

  1088. he's going to

  1089. give us life

  1090. he is a source

  1091. of health

  1092. and here's

  1093. if you put

  1094. on the next

  1095. one

  1096. Andrew

  1097. that would

  1098. be great

  1099. what the gospel

  1100. is going to

  1101. show

  1102. I can't remember

  1103. now if it's

  1104. Ephesians

  1105. or Colossians

  1106. but it

  1107. describes how

  1108. apart from

  1109. God's grace

  1110. we are

  1111. cadavers

  1112. we are

  1113. corpses

  1114. in the

  1115. funeral home

  1116. and a corpse

  1117. can do

  1118. nothing to

  1119. make itself

  1120. alive

  1121. and it's

  1122. a very

  1123. very glaring

  1124. image of

  1125. God

  1126. has to do

  1127. everything

  1128. to bring us

  1129. life

  1130. it's like

  1131. Ezekiel

  1132. can these

  1133. dry bones

  1134. live

  1135. it's like

  1136. Isaiah 43

    Isaiah 43:4

  1137. verses 4

  1138. and 5

  1139. where it

  1140. talks about

  1141. by his

  1142. wounds

  1143. we are

  1144. healed

  1145. that he

  1146. himself

  1147. bore

  1148. our sins

  1149. our

  1150. iniquity

  1151. our

  1152. sickness

  1153. to give

  1154. us

  1155. life

  1156. and the

  1157. Bible

  1158. is going

  1159. to describe

  1160. and John

  1161. is going

  1162. to describe

  1163. that Jesus

  1164. bore my

  1165. sickness

  1166. unto death

  1167. so that I

  1168. might receive

  1169. his health

  1170. unto eternal

  1171. life

  1172. that Jesus

  1173. on the cross

  1174. and in his

  1175. whole ministry

  1176. he's bearing

  1177. the sickness

  1178. and all

  1179. sickness is a

  1180. sign of our

  1181. coming death

  1182. it's a sign

  1183. of our separation

  1184. from God

  1185. it's a

  1186. wonderful image

  1187. that things

  1188. just aren't

  1189. right

  1190. we desire

  1191. health

  1192. we long

  1193. for health

  1194. and Jesus

  1195. will bear

  1196. my

  1197. sickness

  1198. unto death

  1199. when he

  1200. dies upon

  1201. the cross

  1202. so that I

  1203. might receive

  1204. his

  1205. health

  1206. unto eternal

  1207. life

  1208. could you put up

  1209. the final

  1210. point

  1211. so here's

  1212. what the text

  1213. is teaching

  1214. us

  1215. saving

  1216. faith

  1217. see

  1218. what's

  1219. going on

  1220. in this

  1221. gospel

  1222. is that

  1223. John

  1224. is not

  1225. only

  1226. helping

  1227. us

  1228. Jesus

  1229. is revealing

  1230. who God

  1231. is

  1232. God

  1233. is

  1234. not

  1235. the

  1236. God

  1237. in the

  1238. earlier

  1239. thing

  1240. God

  1241. is not

  1242. the

  1243. God

  1244. of

  1245. lies

  1246. he's

  1247. the

  1248. God

  1249. of

  1250. truth

  1251. if you

  1252. know a lie

  1253. it's

  1254. not

  1255. God

  1256. God

  1257. is

  1258. the

  1259. God

  1260. of

  1261. truth

  1262. God

  1263. is

  1264. the

  1265. God

  1266. of

  1267. joy

  1268. God

  1269. is

  1270. in this

  1271. in this

  1272. story

  1273. we're

  1274. seeing

  1275. God

  1276. is

  1277. not

  1278. like

  1279. Rocky

  1280. who can

  1281. be

  1282. trained

  1283. to

  1284. close

  1285. a

  1286. door

  1287. God

  1288. is

  1289. untamable

  1290. and

  1291. good

  1292. who

  1293. else

  1294. is

  1295. God

  1296. God

  1297. is

  1298. where

  1299. health

  1300. is

  1301. God

  1302. is

  1303. where

  1304. life

  1305. is

  1306. and

  1307. saving

  1308. faith

  1309. and so

  1310. Jesus

  1311. is

  1312. revealing

  1313. who

  1314. he

  1315. is

  1316. and

  1317. he's

  1318. also

  1319. revealing

  1320. how

  1321. we're

  1322. to

  1323. respond

  1324. and

  1325. saving

  1326. faith

  1327. welcomes

  1328. Jesus

  1329. it

  1330. honors

  1331. Jesus

  1332. it

  1333. trusts

  1334. Jesus

  1335. it

  1336. obeys

  1337. Jesus

  1338. for

  1339. who

  1340. he

  1341. is

  1342. and

  1343. what

  1344. he

  1345. has

  1346. done

  1347. and

  1348. is

  1349. doing

  1350. and

  1351. will

  1352. do

  1353. now

  1354. we

  1355. don't

  1356. do

  1357. it

  1358. perfectly

  1359. welcoming

  1360. grows

  1361. honoring

  1362. grows

  1363. trusting

  1364. grows

  1365. obedience

  1366. grows

  1367. but

  1368. it's

  1369. possible

  1370. to

  1371. think

  1372. like

  1373. many

  1374. people

  1375. in

  1376. our

  1377. culture

  1378. Jesus

  1379. is

  1380. a

  1381. good

  1382. guy

  1383. he's

  1384. a

  1385. teacher

  1386. he's

  1387. a

  1388. wonderful

  1389. guy

  1390. I'm

  1391. fine

  1392. with

  1393. him

  1394. I

  1395. just

  1396. don't

  1397. like

  1398. Christians

  1399. in

  1400. church

  1401. but

  1402. Jesus

  1403. doesn't

  1404. want

  1405. to

  1406. be

  1407. welcomed

  1408. like

  1409. that

  1410. that's

  1411. not

  1412. saving

  1413. faith

  1414. saving

  1415. faith

  1416. welcomes

  1417. honors

  1418. trusts

  1419. and obeys

  1420. Jesus

  1421. for

  1422. who

  1423. he

  1424. is

  1425. what

  1426. he

  1427. has

  1428. accomplished

  1429. or

  1430. done

  1431. is

  1432. doing

  1433. and

  1434. will

  1435. do

  1436. he

  1437. is

  1438. the

  1439. one

  1440. who

  1441. can

  1442. give

  1443. me

  1444. eternal

  1445. life

  1446. he

  1447. is

  1448. the

  1449. one

  1450. who

  1451. can

  1452. come

  1453. and

  1454. give

  1455. my

  1456. dying

  1457. body

  1458. eternal

  1459. life

  1460. just

  1461. one

  1462. final

  1463. thing

  1464. some

  1465. of us

  1466. maybe

  1467. even

  1468. are

  1469. struggling

  1470. with

  1471. cancer

  1472. when

  1473. a

  1474. Christian

  1475. prays

  1476. to

  1477. God

  1478. for

  1479. healing

  1480. there's

  1481. three

  1482. different

  1483. ways

  1484. that

  1485. he

  1486. responds

  1487. he

  1488. can

  1489. heal

  1490. us

  1491. slow

  1492. with

  1493. medicine

  1494. and

  1495. doctors

  1496. he

  1497. can

  1498. heal

  1499. us

  1500. quickly

  1501. through

  1502. a

  1503. miracle

  1504. like

  1505. that

  1506. story

  1507. that

  1508. I

  1509. shared

  1510. or

  1511. he

  1512. can

  1513. heal

  1514. us

  1515. perfectly

  1516. in

  1517. our

  1518. death

  1519. and

  1520. seeing

  1521. him

  1522. face

  1523. to

  1524. face

  1525. and

  1526. the

  1527. ultimate

  1528. destiny

  1529. of

  1530. everyone

  1531. who

  1532. puts

  1533. their

  1534. faith

  1535. and

  1536. trust

  1537. in

  1538. Jesus

  1539. is

  1540. perfect

  1541. healing

  1542. and

  1543. more

  1544. than

  1545. perfect

  1546. healing

  1547. it

  1548. is

  1549. a

  1550. life

  1551. that

  1552. will

  1553. not

  1554. end

  1555. in

  1556. the

  1557. new

  1558. heaven

  1559. and

  1560. the

  1561. new

  1562. earth

  1563. that

  1564. is

  1565. what

  1566. putting

  1567. our

  1568. faith

  1569. and

  1570. trust

  1571. in

  1572. Jesus

  1573. does

  1574. that

  1575. is

  1576. what

  1577. he

  1578. accomplishes

  1579. in

  1580. this

  1581. mighty

  1582. resurrection

  1583. please

  1584. stand

  1585. it

  1586. might

  1587. be

  1588. very

  1589. distressing

  1590. to

  1591. hear

  1592. that

  1593. apart

  1594. from

  1595. God

  1596. we are

  1597. like

  1598. a

  1599. corpse

  1600. in

  1601. a

  1602. funeral

  1603. home

  1604. but

  1605. it's

  1606. only

  1607. distressing

  1608. news

  1609. if that's

  1610. all the

  1611. news

  1612. if the

  1613. news

  1614. is

  1615. that

  1616. God

  1617. can

  1618. make

  1619. you

  1620. alive

  1621. than

  1622. for

  1623. me

  1624. to

  1625. first

  1626. tell

  1627. you

  1628. the

  1629. bad

  1630. news

  1631. and

  1632. then

  1633. tell

  1634. you

  1635. the

  1636. good

  1637. news

  1638. that's

  1639. only

  1640. great

  1641. and

  1642. if

  1643. you

  1644. have

  1645. not

  1646. yet

  1647. put

  1648. your

  1649. faith

  1650. and

  1651. trust

  1652. in

  1653. Jesus

  1654. there

  1655. is

  1656. no

  1657. better

  1658. time

  1659. than

  1660. right

  1661. now

  1662. to

  1663. do

  1664. it

  1665. and

  1666. you

  1667. know

  1668. I

  1669. don't

  1670. like

  1671. telling

  1672. you

  1673. the

  1674. sinner's

  1675. prayer

  1676. because

  1677. I

  1678. know

  1679. I

  1680. for

  1681. so

  1682. many

  1683. years

  1684. in

  1685. my

  1686. Christian

  1687. life

  1688. I

  1689. was

  1690. confused

  1691. by

  1692. it

  1693. because

  1694. I

  1695. didn't

  1696. get the

  1697. words

  1698. right

  1699. it

  1700. wasn't

  1701. working

  1702. and

  1703. that's

  1704. just

  1705. the devil

  1706. confusing

  1707. me

  1708. I

  1709. want

  1710. that

  1711. to

  1712. be

  1713. me

  1714. I

  1715. want

  1716. that

  1717. to

  1718. be

  1719. me

  1720. Jesus

  1721. have

  1722. mercy

  1723. on

  1724. me

  1725. I

  1726. want

  1727. that

  1728. to

  1729. be

  1730. me

  1731. and

  1732. there's

  1733. no

  1734. better

  1735. time

  1736. than

  1737. right

  1738. now

  1739. to

  1740. do

  1741. it

  1742. and

  1743. for

  1744. all

  1745. of

  1746. us

  1747. the

  1748. cry

  1749. of

  1750. our

  1751. heart

  1752. can

  1753. be

  1754. father

  1755. help

  1756. me

  1757. to

  1758. welcome

  1759. Jesus

  1760. more

  1761. help

  1762. me

  1763. to

  1764. honor

  1765. him

  1766. more

  1767. help

  1768. me

  1769. to

  1770. trust

  1771. him

  1772. more

  1773. help

  1774. me

  1775. to

  1776. obey

  1777. him

  1778. more

  1779. help

  1780. me

  1781. father

  1782. to

  1783. be

  1784. more

  1785. gripped

  1786. by

  1787. who

  1788. he

  1789. is

  1790. and

  1791. what

  1792. he's

  1793. done

  1794. and

  1795. what

  1796. he

  1797. promises

  1798. he

  1799. will

  1800. do

  1801. and

  1802. what

  1803. he's

  1804. promised

  1805. he's

  1806. done

  1807. with

  1808. putting

  1809. a

  1810. stream

  1811. of

  1812. living

  1813. water

  1814. in

  1815. the

  1816. center

  1817. of

  1818. me

  1819. father

  1820. help

  1821. me

  1822. to

  1823. honor

  1824. him

  1825. and

  1826. trust

  1827. him

  1828. more

  1829. and

  1830. more

  1831. in

  1832. everything

  1833. I

  1834. do

  1835. a

  1836. cry

  1837. of

  1838. our

  1839. hearts

  1840. let's

  1841. bow

  1842. our

  1843. heads

  1844. in

  1845. prayer

  1846. father

  1847. pour

  1848. out

  1849. your

  1850. holy

  1851. spirit

  1852. upon

  1853. us

  1854. thank

  1855. you

  1856. for

  1857. Jesus

  1858. thank

  1859. you

  1860. father

  1861. that

  1862. he

  1863. alone

  1864. bore

  1865. our

  1866. sickness

  1867. on

  1868. to

  1869. death

  1870. on

  1871. the

  1872. cross

  1873. he

  1874. alone

  1875. dealt

  1876. with

  1877. it

  1878. on

  1879. the

  1880. cross

  1881. that

  1882. he

  1883. alone

  1884. tasted

  1885. all

  1886. there

  1887. is

  1888. to

  1889. taste

  1890. of

  1891. death

  1892. with

  1893. nothing

  1894. left

  1895. out

  1896. that

  1897. he

  1898. alone

  1899. has

  1900. conquered

  1901. death

  1902. and

  1903. conquered

  1904. that

  1905. which

  1906. causes

  1907. death

  1908. which

  1909. is

  1910. our

  1911. rebellion

  1912. and

  1913. sin

  1914. against
