  1. Father, we often do not know the state of our own heart.

  2. We flatter ourselves too much to detect or hate our own sin.

  3. We don't really know, Father, the devices and desires of our own hearts.

  4. So, Father, we are so thankful that you know everything there is to know about us and still you love us.

  5. We thank you, Father, that your Holy Spirit moves to bring your word to our heart, the center of who we are, the command center of our lives.

  6. And we ask, Father, that you would do that wonderful work in our lives this morning of bringing your word to the center of who we are,

  7. that we might know Jesus, that we might love Jesus, that we might trust him,

  8. that we might know how great a thing he accomplished for us in his life and in his death upon the cross and resurrection.

  9. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

  10. Please be seated.

  11. So, when I was ordained back in those days, by the way, we're having problems with lighting because the way they set the light up.

  12. Just start waving at me if I keep walking into the darkness and you can't see me.

  13. Unless you don't like seeing me, and then you can just stay like this.

  14. Just stay there, whatever.

  15. And I'll just sort of look and figure out who's picking the most move.

  16. Anyway, never mind.

  17. So, I spent a couple years in a suburban church and then in the diocese that I was part of back then.

  18. The way it worked is when you get ordained, you get paid a very tiny bit of money and you get a bit of a raise.

  19. As long as you keep breathing, you keep getting small raises.

  20. And so, basically, there were a lot of churches in the diocese that their entire model was having...

  21. Well, it was sort of a...

  22. What it was, it was sort of a vampire model of organizing your church.

  23. Every couple of years, they'd say,

  24. What we need around here is some new blood.

  25. And so, they'd hire you because you were cheap.

  26. And actually, it was very funny.

  27. When I went to my first church out in the country, they basically said to me right of the way,

  28. It's so good to have you here.

  29. You're cheap.

  30. We know you're only going to be here a couple of years because then you move into a higher pay bracket and you'll have to move along.

  31. So, we like you right now because we need you to do the things that we do and we need you to be cheap.

  32. And that's just the way things worked.

  33. In fact, we did eventually move, but we didn't move.

  34. The church had grown.

  35. They could have continued to afford me, but God called us to this particular church.

  36. One of the things we struggle with in life, if we think about it,

  37. is coming to realize that at some point in time in our lives, people don't need us.

  38. It can be very hard for moms and dads when the kids all leave and the kids don't need you anymore.

  39. And in a far more personal and far more threatening type of way, it can also be very hard.

  40. In a room of this size, there are probably several of us who've been divorced.

  41. And maybe we're still living with divorce.

  42. Maybe some of us have remarried.

  43. But we've lived with this great problem, this great tearing in our lives because the person who loved us found somebody better.

  44. Or at least that's what they thought.

  45. And we're no longer needed.

  46. We're no longer loved.

  47. I was talking a couple of years ago to a couple of people, and they were all sharing about a particular movie.

  48. And this particular movie, which I had also seen, it was about a young guy who had a very deep relationship with this young woman,

  49. but he never wanted to marry her because he was always worried about how he could ever marry one particular person when he might meet somebody better later on.

  50. And one of the young women was saying it was too painful for her to watch that movie.

  51. About halfway into it, she had to leave.

  52. Because it was touching at a very, very deep fear in her life that at that time that she would never marry.

  53. And the reason she would never be able to marry wasn't that she wasn't able to commit,

  54. but that all of the fellows that she'd had any dealings with were always basically looking for something better.

  55. And so it's a very deep-seated, this complex of issues of struggling with the fact at some points in our time, in our lives,

  56. people leave us because they don't need us anymore.

  57. It doesn't seem like they love us anymore because they don't need us.

  58. And we're this pattern of people always looking for something, or just being open to something better,

  59. whatever that means, and leaving us alone.

  60. And the love breaks, the love ends, and it's just hard sometimes to live our lives that way.

  61. Some of us here this morning might, in fact, still be living with very deep wounds connected to this.

  62. Believe it or not, the Bible text that I read a little bit earlier

  63. actually speaks in a very powerful way to our fear.

  64. And it's one of the curiosities of our heart that many of us, when we read the text,

  65. don't actually realize that it's actually addressing something very deeply,

  66. something deep in our heart that we worry about.

  67. So it'd be a great help to me if you would open your Bibles and turn with me to John chapter 5.

    John 5 chapter mention

  68. John chapter 5.

    John 5 chapter mention

  69. And for those of you, I don't know what's up on the screen above me.

  70. Oh, we already have one of the paintings.

  71. What we're doing is we're going through John's gospel, and we're up to John chapter 5,

    John 5 chapter mention

  72. and here's how the text goes.

  73. After this, there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

  74. And just pause, if you're a guest here, one of the characteristics,

  75. if you read the Old Testament, one of the characteristics of the Old Testament is

  76. that there are several times of worship that are also called feasts.

  77. I mean, literally, one of the ways that you worship God is by eating a lot

  78. and drinking a lot, all to the glory of God.

  79. That's just the way God set it up.

  80. And this is one, it could have been several ones.

  81. John decides not to tell us which one it is, but it's for one of those.

  82. And Jesus goes to Jerusalem to be right where the temple is so that he, as a good and observant Jew,

  83. can take part in the feast.

  84. We'll read it again.

  85. Verse 1.

  86. After this, there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

  87. Now, there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool in Aramaic called Bethesda,

  88. which has five-roofed colonnades.

  89. Colonades?

  90. I don't know how to pronounce it.

  91. In these lay a multitude of invalids, blind, lame, and paralyzed.

  92. One man was there who had been an invalid for 38 years.

  93. Now, just pause for a second.

  94. And those of you who are following along, some of you, if you have a King James version of the Bible,

  95. you say, George just skipped part.

  96. And others of you who are very keen readers notice that it goes from verse number 3 to verse number 5.

  97. Now, this is actually just an important little aside.

  98. The title of this sermon series is Knowing Jesus, John's Intimate Biography.

  99. And one of the things about this, which we now call the Gospel of John,

  100. which is really just one of the four ancient biographies of Jesus,

  101. written by an eyewitness and, in fact, a person who was with Jesus for all of these different things.

  102. He was with Jesus his entire public ministry.

  103. One of the things that Christians have a concern for is to actually know what the original text actually is.

  104. And over time, archaeologists keep finding more and more ancient copies of manuscripts, copies of the Bible.

  105. Because up until the printing press, every time somebody wanted a copy of the Bible,

  106. some person had to sit down and write it out by hand.

  107. And then they would give it to a person.

  108. And one of the common misconceptions of the Christian faith is either that we can't know what the original writing was,

  109. or that somehow or another some crazy monks or the crazy church went and moved things around and changed things around,

  110. take out the bits that they didn't like and add parts that they did like.

  111. And those are complete and utter misconceptions.

  112. It's not what works at all.

  113. That, in fact, there's scholars throughout the world, Christian, non-Christian,

  114. who find these ancient manuscripts.

  115. And there's actually a scientific method whereby you can look at all of the manuscripts,

  116. and you can date them.

  117. And as archaeologists find more and more and more ancient manuscripts,

  118. Christians who just want to know what the actual text says,

  119. adjust the text.

  120. And one of the amazing things about it is if you go and take a King James version of the Bible,

  121. and you take ours, and a modern version will have some of the bits taken out,

  122. you'll see that not a single important doctrine of Christian belief has ever been affected

  123. by the newest archaeological findings.

  124. Not one.

  125. That the copyists, because they desire to copy accurately,

  126. and because it was actually a craft, a trade, where you were trained,

  127. they actually did a remarkably good job.

  128. But occasionally, you find a small difference.

  129. Now, what part was left off?

  130. A part about an angel coming in and stirring the water.

  131. It doesn't affect anything to do with the gospel or Christian doctrines.

  132. But because Christians desire to know what the Bible actually says,

  133. these adjustments are made as time goes on.

  134. By the way, so whenever, if you talk to a Muslim and they say you don't know what's in the Bible,

  135. last time I had that happen to me, I just smiled.

  136. I thought, oh, I am so glad to myself.

  137. I thought to myself, I am so glad you raised that particular question.

  138. And I started to explain it to him, and I started to talk to him about how, in fact,

  139. the Koran is not, in fact, questioned in the same type of way that the Koran,

  140. it's uncertain what exactly...

  141. Anyway, at some point in time, he just decided he would change the topic.

  142. But the point is that we as Christians can have...

  143. And actually, not just Christians.

  144. Anybody can have a very, very great confidence.

  145. You might still think it's nonsense, okay?

  146. But with every passing day, our confidence that this is actually what John wrote

  147. gets stronger and stronger and stronger.

  148. Science and archaeology makes our confidence in this higher and higher and higher as time goes on.

  149. Anyway, that was a long...

  150. Where were we?

  151. Verse 5.

  152. Okay, we're talking about our fears of being abandoned.

  153. We'll read verse 5 again.

  154. And one man was there by the pool who had been an invalid for 38 years.

  155. When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time...

  156. See, Jesus is showing divine knowledge.

  157. Jesus says to the man, do you want to be healed?

  158. And the sick man answered him...

  159. Now, in English, it's hard to communicate what just happens right now.

  160. But in the original language, the man gives a sarcastic answer.

  161. The man doesn't say,

  162. Oh, Jesus, I'm so glad you came here.

  163. I've heard stories about you.

  164. I know you can heal me.

  165. I've been praying to God that you would come here

  166. because I know you can heal me.

  167. I've heard all about you.

  168. Please heal me.

  169. No, the guy's answer is he basically flips Jesus off.

  170. He says...

  171. You know, basically he's saying,

  172. Dude, I'm here all by myself.

  173. I can't get in the water to be healed.

  174. Like, why are you asking me this stupid question?

  175. That's what's being...

  176. But in English, it's not as obvious.

  177. But that's actually the heart of...

  178. In fact, it's part of the shocking nature of this story.

  179. As the story goes on, this man becomes revealed as more and more of a miserable, ungrateful, sarcastic, backbiting, betraying guy.

  180. That's how the story unfolds.

  181. And so it begins.

  182. So Jesus says to him, Do you want to be healed?

  183. The sick man says,

  184. Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up,

  185. and while I am going, another steps down before me.

  186. Duh.

  187. No, the duh's not there, but it's implied.

  188. Duh.

  189. And how does Jesus respond to him?

  190. Does Jesus say to his disciples,

  191. Gosh, this...

  192. Like, why is this guy flipping me off?

  193. Like, I'm trying to be nice to this guy,

  194. and he just gives me this sarcastic answer.

  195. Doesn't he know what I can do for him?

  196. Is that what Jesus says?

  197. No.

  198. What is Jesus?

  199. Jesus heals him.

  200. The guy's not expecting Jesus to heal him,

  201. doesn't believe that Jesus can heal him,

  202. doesn't ask Jesus to heal him.

  203. In fact, his response is a sarcastic putting him away.

  204. What does Jesus do?

  205. Verse 8.

  206. Jesus said to him,

  207. Get up, take up your bed, and walk.

  208. And at once, the man was healed,

  209. and he took up his bed and walked.

  210. And by the way, partly what John is doing,

  211. and if you've been here for the other sermons,

  212. John keeps putting in little bits of historical detail.

  213. In fact, if you go on the Dig and Delve website

  214. from a couple of years ago,

  215. Craig Evans shares how there's a variety of different

  216. Israeli Jewish archaeologists

  217. who use the New Testament to find more sites in Jerusalem

  218. because of its accuracy.

  219. So these Jewish archaeologists read the New Testament

  220. so they can go looking where to find things

  221. that were destroyed over the years.

  222. And so in this particular story,

  223. what is being emphasized is the wow of the miracle.

  224. This guy's been an invalid for 38 years,

  225. and Jesus, just by his mere willing it,

  226. heals the man to the extent that he can stand up,

  227. pick up his mat, and walk away.

  228. It increases the wow, the nature, how big the miracle is.

  229. So how is the man going to respond to this?

  230. Remember I've sort of said to you,

  231. as the story goes on,

  232. it shows how miserable this guy is.

  233. He'd be one of these guys that if you were in a hospital

  234. or if you were a social worker,

  235. after you've dealt with him,

  236. you'd go, gosh, I don't like that guy.

  237. Maybe you'd go home and tell your husband or your wife

  238. about how miserable and unthankful the person was,

  239. had to deal with this person.

  240. We came, we gave him free medicine,

  241. we fixed him all up,

  242. and all he did was give us lip.

  243. And that's what happened.

  244. Look, continue reading the rest of verse now.

  245. Now that day was the Sabbath.

  246. So the Jewish leaders said to the man who had been healed,

  247. it is the Sabbath and it is not lawful for you to take up your bed.

  248. Now just pause.

  249. Andrew, could you put up the first point, please?

  250. I'm not going to go into it very much,

  251. but just so you know,

  252. Jesus does not tell the man to do anything

  253. which goes against what the Bible says.

  254. He tells the man to break a religious tradition,

  255. not a command of God.

  256. I'm not going to go into it very much,

  257. but it's not, Jesus doesn't say,

  258. you know, go ahead,

  259. I know the Old Testament says this,

  260. but go ahead and do it anyway.

  261. It's just a tradition that they have.

  262. There's nowhere in the Bible that it says,

  263. nowhere in the Old Testament that says,

  264. you can't carry your mat on the Sabbath.

  265. Okay?

  266. But they have a tradition around it.

  267. Anyway, so these, the religious leaders,

  268. they say to this guy,

  269. they don't know anything about him being healed.

  270. Okay?

  271. All they see is a guy carrying,

  272. they're mat on the Sabbath.

  273. They're like the religious police.

  274. They, they're busy bodies.

  275. And these religious busy bodies go up against the guy

  276. and says, you're not supposed to be doing this.

  277. Verse 11.

  278. So how does the man answer him?

  279. Well, the man says in verse 11,

  280. the man who healed me,

  281. that man said to me,

  282. take up your bed and walk.

  283. Now, just notice there,

  284. there's two things here.

  285. The first thing is,

  286. he basically tries to pass the buck.

  287. He wants to get out of trouble.

  288. So he's going to put it on Jesus.

  289. Like that's a really good,

  290. grateful way to express your gratitude.

  291. And he tries to put it on Jesus.

  292. It's not my fault.

  293. Whoa.

  294. No harm, no fault.

  295. Oh, just was him over there,

  296. somewhere over there.

  297. He was going to tell me,

  298. you should go get him

  299. because you should be mad at him,

  300. not me.

  301. And, and how do the,

  302. how do the religious leaders say,

  303. respond to that?

  304. Verse 12.

  305. Now, we're not going to go into it very much,

  306. but one of the things about the gospel

  307. is the gospels are the most profound critique of religion

  308. in all of literature.

  309. You don't have to read Christopher Hitchens.

  310. You don't have to read Dawkins.

  311. You don't have to read those people to have a critique of religion.

  312. You just got to read the Bible.

  313. And, and here all the way through this text is a profound critique of religion.

  314. And religion is any type of, you know,

  315. organizing your,

  316. your life around worship or meaning in any type of way that excludes the gospel.

  317. Can be Christian churches.

  318. Can end up becoming really just religious places,

  319. not actually places where the gospel is centered.

  320. So how do they show this critique?

  321. So this guy says,

  322. uh,

  323. okay,

  324. I'm,

  325. I'm carrying this because a guy healed me and told me to walk.

  326. And,

  327. uh,

  328. and they asked him verse 12,

  329. who is the man who said to you,

  330. take up your bed and walk?

  331. Like,

  332. see,

  333. this is the subtle critique of religion.

  334. They don't say,

  335. really,

  336. you got healed.

  337. Really?

  338. Like,

  339. what did you get healed of?

  340. They're not even interested in that.

  341. You know,

  342. it's really funny because if in fact a miracle had happened,

  343. only God could do this.

  344. You'd think that religious people would be interested in God.

  345. But religious people aren't really interested in God.

  346. They're interested in their traditions.

  347. Because you see,

  348. often religion is used to inoculate us against the true and living God.

  349. So they don't even ask any question at all about the miracle.

  350. They just said,

  351. who is the man who said to you,

  352. take up your bed and walk?

  353. Verse 13.

  354. How does the man respond?

  355. Now,

  356. the man who had been healed did not know who it was.

  357. For Jesus had withdrawn as there was no crowd,

  358. as there was a crowd in the place.

  359. Just pause.

  360. So who's this guy?

  361. Jesus comes up.

  362. You want to be healed?

  363. You know,

  364. sarcastic answer.

  365. Jesus heals him.

  366. He's not even grateful.

  367. He doesn't say,

  368. for 38 years I've been lame.

  369. You just healed me.

  370. Who are you?

  371. The guy's completely and utterly uninterested.

  372. He just leaves.

  373. When something comes against him by the religious police,

  374. he tries to say,

  375. don't blame me,

  376. it's this guy's fault.

  377. Verse 14.

  378. It gets worse.

  379. Afterward,

  380. Jesus found the man in the temple and said to him,

  381. see,

  382. you are well,

  383. sin no more,

  384. that nothing worse may happen to you.

  385. The man went away

  386. and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him.

  387. In other words,

  388. okay,

  389. you want to find the guy?

  390. His name's Jesus.

  391. Like,

  392. he betrays Jesus.

  393. He betrays Jesus.

  394. Now,

  395. here's a very,

  396. very good question.

  397. Why on earth did Jesus heal that guy?

  398. I mean,

  399. how many of you are wondering that?

  400. Like,

  401. why on earth did Jesus heal this guy?

  402. Sarcastic,

  403. absolutely no faith,

  404. completely and utterly ungrateful,

  405. passing the buck,

  406. getting Jesus in trouble,

  407. betraying him.

  408. Why on earth would Jesus heal someone like that?

  409. Now,

  410. why do Christians ask that question?

  411. The reason we ask that question

  412. is that we want to sneak in

  413. the belief

  414. that the reason we are Christians

  415. is because we're worthy.

  416. You see,

  417. for those of you who are guests,

  418. this is an evangelical church.

  419. Evangelical Christians

  420. are supposed to know

  421. that we're saved.

  422. How are we made right with God?

  423. By grace alone,

  424. through faith alone,

  425. in Christ alone.

  426. That God doesn't weigh up

  427. how many good things I have in my life.

  428. He pardons my offenses.

  429. In fact,

  430. if you could put up

  431. the next point,

  432. Andrew,

  433. and the next point,

  434. I thought,

  435. it's just a quote from the Bible.

  436. But God shows his love for us

  437. in that while we were still sinners,

  438. in other words,

  439. completely and utterly unworthy,

  440. far from God,

  441. turning our back on God,

  442. walking away from God,

  443. Christ died for us.

  444. He dies for us

  445. when we're bad.

  446. He dies for us

  447. when we don't want him to die.

  448. He dies for us

  449. when we think

  450. we are like little gods.

  451. He dies for us

  452. when we are still sinners.

  453. And we know

  454. that this is the case.

  455. But in fact,

  456. if you could put up

  457. the next point,

  458. Andrew,

  459. that would be great.

  460. I keep sneaking in

  461. the belief

  462. that I am worthy

  463. of God's love

  464. and power

  465. because of who I am

  466. and what I've done.

  467. See,

  468. that's why we find

  469. this text very,

  470. very,

  471. once you actually see

  472. what's going on

  473. in the text,

  474. Jesus heals

  475. a completely

  476. and utterly

  477. massively

  478. unworthy

  479. person

  480. that if we were doing,

  481. and in fact,

  482. it's even actually

  483. sort of emphasized

  484. by the fact

  485. that one of his complaints

  486. to the God,

  487. to Jesus,

  488. is,

  489. for 38 years

  490. I've been lying here

  491. and I don't have

  492. any friends or family

  493. that want to help me.

  494. Like,

  495. his personality problems

  496. have been going on

  497. a long time.

  498. Some of you have

  499. heard me this story,

  500. this is quite a few years ago,

  501. I did a,

  502. I was asked by a funeral home

  503. to do a funeral

  504. for a man

  505. who dropped dead at work,

  506. one of those brain aneurysms

  507. that just,

  508. he's just,

  509. all of a sudden

  510. he just dies.

  511. And I do the funeral

  512. and the guy was,

  513. I don't know,

  514. in his mid-40s.

  515. So you think

  516. that a guy

  517. who's in his mid-40s

  518. who dies

  519. in a large government office

  520. at work,

  521. how big do you think

  522. the funeral would be?

  523. And he has a wife

  524. and three kids.

  525. You think it's going

  526. to be a big funeral?

  527. Okay,

  528. six people at the funeral.

  529. Six people at the funeral.

  530. His ex-wife

  531. and his three kids

  532. aged,

  533. I think,

  534. roughly,

  535. you know,

  536. 20,

  537. 18,

  538. and 13.

  539. 13-year-old was a girl.

  540. Not a single tear

  541. was shed at the funeral.

  542. And there's only that

  543. six or seven people

  544. at the funeral.

  545. And I said to myself,

  546. what type of man

  547. was this

  548. that could die

  549. in such a manner?

  550. And only these six

  551. or seven people

  552. would come to the funeral.

  553. And his 13-year-old girl

  554. daughter

  555. would not shed

  556. a single tear.

  557. What type of a man

  558. was this?

  559. And I never know

  560. because,

  561. in fact,

  562. it was a funeral home funeral.

  563. There was no reception

  564. afterwards.

  565. Everybody just went

  566. their separate ways.

  567. I came,

  568. I did the service,

  569. and I went home.

  570. I never have the answer

  571. to that.

  572. Maybe this guy

  573. that Jesus healed

  574. is something like that.

  575. And in our heart of hearts,

  576. even for Christians,

  577. we wonder,

  578. why would God

  579. heal a man?

  580. Why would Jesus do that?

  581. And the reason

  582. we ask that question

  583. is that we think

  584. it's connected

  585. to worthiness.

  586. Because you and I

  587. keep sneaking in

  588. to our walk

  589. with Jesus

  590. that

  591. I actually am

  592. sort of worthy.

  593. nothing personal.

  594. I'm a little bit

  595. more worthy

  596. than the rest of you,

  597. you know?

  598. And I don't know,

  599. maybe there's 140 people

  600. in here,

  601. and probably every one

  602. of the 140 of us,

  603. we're Canadians,

  604. okay?

  605. So we're not going to say

  606. I'm more worthy

  607. than 139,

  608. but as Canadians,

  609. we might say

  610. I'm more worthy

  611. than 100 of you.

  612. Right?

  613. Because we'd know

  614. it'd be too sinful

  615. to say 139

  616. of you aren't

  617. as worthy as me,

  618. but I'm more worthy

  619. than 100 of you,

  620. and every one of us

  621. is saying that

  622. in our heart of hearts.

  623. And we think

  624. that when things

  625. go wrong

  626. in our life,

  627. that maybe we are

  628. having trouble

  629. in our marriage,

  630. or we're having

  631. problems with our kids,

  632. or we're having

  633. trouble at work,

  634. or we have

  635. health problems,

  636. and all of a sudden

  637. we feel as if God

  638. is very, very far

  639. from us,

  640. and the reason is

  641. is that

  642. there has snuck

  643. into how

  644. we understand

  645. and see ourselves

  646. is that somehow

  647. or another

  648. whatever blessings

  649. I have is because

  650. of some type

  651. of worthiness,

  652. and now

  653. I no longer

  654. have that external

  655. success

  656. that the saved

  657. should have,

  658. and so we don't

  659. want to be around

  660. other Christians

  661. because at the end

  662. of the day

  663. it is very,

  664. very hard

  665. for you and me

  666. to believe

  667. that I am saved

  668. by grace alone,

  669. through faith alone,

  670. in Jesus

  671. alone.

  672. And part of it

  673. is because we

  674. don't know

  675. who God is.

  676. John's gospel

  677. is about,

  678. one of the things

  679. that John's gospel

  680. is all about

  681. is that Jesus

  682. introduces God.

  683. Those of you

  684. who have been here,

  685. what I've been saying

  686. almost every week,

  687. I need to start

  688. saying to Canadians

  689. that in terms

  690. of the God

  691. that most Canadians

  692. believe exists,

  693. I am an atheist.

  694. I believe in the God

  695. that is introduced

  696. by Jesus.

  697. And I believe

  698. that Jesus introduces

  699. the God

  700. that really exists,

  701. that truly does exist,

  702. that is unknown,

  703. apart from Jesus.

  704. If, Andrew,

  705. could you put up

  706. the next point?

  707. And one of the things

  708. which God,

  709. Jesus reveals

  710. about God

  711. is that God

  712. has no need love.

  713. He is only

  714. gift love.

  715. God

  716. has no needs.

  717. So part of my

  718. need love

  719. is,

  720. you know,

  721. human,

  722. we human,

  723. you know,

  724. we know what need love is.

  725. We want to be needed

  726. and we love it,

  727. you know,

  728. when our kids are young

  729. and they need us

  730. and sometimes

  731. that just

  732. bothers the heck

  733. out of us

  734. but other times

  735. we just so love it

  736. and we really know

  737. we love it

  738. when they no longer

  739. need us

  740. and they don't

  741. want us around.

  742. And we like to think

  743. that there's something

  744. about us

  745. that's worthy

  746. and that the other

  747. person really needs

  748. that will keep us

  749. together

  750. and that's fine.

  751. You know why

  752. it's fine on one level?

  753. Because in fact

  754. the matter is

  755. that human beings

  756. are just one

  757. unending need.

  758. I am one

  759. unending need.

  760. I needed my parents

  761. to conceive me

  762. for me to exist

  763. and I think

  764. I'm a god.

  765. I couldn't even

  766. bring about

  767. my own existence.

  768. No human being

  769. can.

  770. and everything

  771. every second

  772. every microsecond

  773. I am one

  774. unending need

  775. for oxygen

  776. for gravity

  777. for food

  778. for people around

  779. I needed to learn

  780. a language

  781. I didn't invent

  782. it myself

  783. if you do invent

  784. a language yourself

  785. it's sort of called

  786. not learning

  787. how to speak

  788. it's actually

  789. not a good thing

  790. but a problem

  791. you just keep

  792. making up

  793. your own language

  794. the only person

  795. in the world

  796. who speaks

  797. that language

  798. that's called

  799. failure

  800. to learn a language

  801. not a sign

  802. that you are God

  803. okay

  804. we all know that

  805. we're one

  806. unending need

  807. and part of the mystery

  808. part of the things

  809. which other religions

  810. whether it's Islam

  811. or Buddhism

  812. or Hinduism

  813. and especially

  814. atheism

  815. cannot account for

  816. it's easy to account

  817. for the fact

  818. that human beings

  819. are selfish

  820. in love

  821. and they want

  822. a type of

  823. self-centered

  824. need type of love

  825. the hard thing

  826. for all those religions

  827. to explain

  828. is the fact

  829. that there's

  830. sometimes

  831. that we do rise

  832. to gift love

  833. just

  834. with nothing

  835. expected in return

  836. there's many

  837. many years ago

  838. we had this

  839. in fact

  840. when I was

  841. the students

  842. connected to the church

  843. used to call it

  844. the slum mobile

  845. I had this

  846. really terrible

  847. big old

  848. 12-seater van

  849. and we

  850. took this

  851. 12-seater van

  852. all rusted

  853. and everything

  854. like that

  855. but it ran

  856. and we took

  857. it to Nova Scotia

  858. had a bit

  859. of a holiday

  860. and way back

  861. there was some

  862. problems

  863. and we pulled

  864. into a garage

  865. and the guy

  866. looked at me

  867. the Ontario plates

  868. nine kids

  869. looked at the van

  870. and Ontario plates

  871. Nova Scotia

  872. and he said to me

  873. you know what

  874. I'll look at this

  875. right away

  876. for you

  877. and he looked at it

  878. right away

  879. and he fixed it

  880. and he said

  881. you know what

  882. no charge

  883. hope you make it

  884. back safely

  885. I'll never see

  886. that guy again

  887. that was just

  888. pure gift love

  889. all of us

  890. have been recipients

  891. of just pure gift love

  892. but the fact of the matter

  893. is God has no needs

  894. he just

  895. he is only gift love

  896. he only gives

  897. he does not need

  898. anything from human beings

  899. and to try to understand

  900. that God doesn't need

  901. my worthiness

  902. he doesn't need

  903. my strength

  904. he doesn't need

  905. my abilities

  906. he doesn't need

  907. anything in me

  908. at all

  909. that his only

  910. relationship to me

  911. is pure

  912. pure

  913. pure

  914. gift love

  915. and on one hand

  916. as a human being

  917. who wants to feel

  918. needed

  919. who wants to feel

  920. worthy

  921. it almost feels

  922. like I'm naked

  923. in public

  924. to think that

  925. God relates

  926. to me only

  927. and utterly

  928. and completely

  929. by gift love

  930. and there's no

  931. need love

  932. in him at all

  933. and it feels

  934. like I am

  935. naked

  936. and powerless

  937. and it doesn't

  938. feel good

  939. but that is

  940. the

  941. God is unfailing

  942. God is unfailing

  943. and God is the

  944. only being

  945. in the universe

  946. who has no needs

  947. and if he

  948. puts his love

  949. on me

  950. as a gift

  951. there is nothing

  952. more secure

  953. than to be

  954. connected to the

  955. God

  956. who is only

  957. gift love

  958. and has no

  959. needs

  960. his love

  961. will never

  962. tire

  963. his love

  964. will never

  965. come to an end

  966. his love

  967. will never

  968. find someone

  969. better

  970. because he's

  971. not looking

  972. for better

  973. he doesn't

  974. need anything

  975. he's just

  976. love

  977. there is no

  978. more secure

  979. relationship

  980. than we can

  981. have

  982. than with the

  983. God

  984. who truly

  985. does exist

  986. who's revealed

  987. by Jesus

  988. Christ

  989. that is only

  990. love

  991. only gift love

  992. with no

  993. need

  994. could you put up

  995. the next point

  996. Andrew

  997. in this is love

  998. in this is love

  999. not that we

  1000. have loved

  1001. God

  1002. but that he

  1003. loved us

  1004. and sent his

  1005. son

  1006. to be the

  1007. propitiation

  1008. for our sins

  1009. in this

  1010. is love

  1011. not that we

  1012. have loved

  1013. God

  1014. but that he

  1015. loved us

  1016. and sent his

  1017. son

  1018. to be the

  1019. propitiation

  1020. for our sins

  1021. this is such a

  1022. powerful text

  1023. if you think

  1024. about this text

  1025. one of the things

  1026. which is so

  1027. remarkable about

  1028. this text

  1029. in the previous

  1030. miracle

  1031. how did the

  1032. miracle work

  1033. in the previous

  1034. miracle you can

  1035. go back and

  1036. read it

  1037. the guy comes

  1038. he says to

  1039. Jesus

  1040. Jesus I really

  1041. need you to

  1042. heal

  1043. my son

  1044. and his

  1045. son is 35

  1046. kilometers away

  1047. and he says I

  1048. really need you to

  1049. come and heal

  1050. my son

  1051. and Jesus

  1052. just looks at

  1053. the nobleman

  1054. the high

  1055. official and

  1056. just says go

  1057. your son will

  1058. be healed

  1059. and the guy

  1060. believes Jesus

  1061. and goes

  1062. and finds out

  1063. the next day

  1064. that the moment

  1065. that Jesus said

  1066. that and that he

  1067. left the son

  1068. was healed

  1069. but in this case

  1070. there's nothing

  1071. like that

  1072. remember how

  1073. does the miracle

  1074. work

  1075. the guy doesn't

  1076. know who

  1077. Jesus is

  1078. the guy doesn't

  1079. care who

  1080. Jesus is

  1081. the guy has

  1082. no hope

  1083. doesn't believe

  1084. that Jesus

  1085. can heal him

  1086. has no expectation

  1087. makes no request

  1088. whatsoever

  1089. the guy isn't even

  1090. asked to do

  1091. something before

  1092. he's healed

  1093. Jesus just

  1094. heals him

  1095. and after he's

  1096. healed the guy

  1097. can get up

  1098. and the guy is

  1099. completely and

  1100. utterly ungrateful

  1101. completely and

  1102. utterly unthankful

  1103. all these bad

  1104. things

  1105. everything that

  1106. is done for

  1107. the man's

  1108. healing is

  1109. done by Jesus

  1110. why

  1111. because he is

  1112. gift love

  1113. and so it is

  1114. with our

  1115. relationship with

  1116. Christ

  1117. Jesus does

  1118. everything to

  1119. heal the man

  1120. the man does

  1121. nothing

  1122. he must do

  1123. everything to

  1124. give us eternal

  1125. life

  1126. I can do

  1127. nothing

  1128. he must do

  1129. everything to

  1130. defeat death

  1131. I can do

  1132. nothing

  1133. he must do

  1134. everything to

  1135. deal with

  1136. death's cause

  1137. which is sin

  1138. I can do

  1139. nothing

  1140. he does

  1141. everything when

  1142. I am completely

  1143. and utterly

  1144. unworthy

  1145. he does

  1146. everything out

  1147. of gift love

  1148. and not need

  1149. love

  1150. this my

  1151. friends is

  1152. the gospel

  1153. this is

  1154. Jesus

  1155. this is what

  1156. he does

  1157. for you

  1158. and for

  1159. me

  1160. all he

  1161. says

  1162. is you

  1163. just put

  1164. your hands

  1165. out

  1166. our arms

  1167. aren't even

  1168. long enough

  1169. to reach

  1170. Jesus

  1171. his arms

  1172. reach ours

  1173. it's his

  1174. holy spirit

  1175. coming into

  1176. us

  1177. that gives

  1178. us this

  1179. life

  1180. he does

  1181. it all

  1182. we do

  1183. nothing

  1184. that is

  1185. the gospel

  1186. that is

  1187. the gospel

  1188. and we

  1189. are to

  1190. be gripped

  1191. by his

  1192. unfailing

  1193. love

  1194. his great

  1195. victory

  1196. please stand

  1197. if there

  1198. is any

  1199. here who

  1200. has not

  1201. yet given

  1202. their life

  1203. to Jesus

  1204. hopefully

  1205. you now

  1206. have heard

  1207. that if

  1208. you are

  1209. waiting to

  1210. make yourself

  1211. worthy

  1212. that's not

  1213. the way

  1214. to go

  1215. if you

  1216. feel

  1217. that your

  1218. life has

  1219. been so

  1220. wrecked

  1221. that Jesus

  1222. would never

  1223. even pay

  1224. any attention

  1225. to you

  1226. now you

  1227. know that

  1228. that's not

  1229. true

  1230. there is

  1231. no better

  1232. time than

  1233. right now

  1234. to say

  1235. Jesus

  1236. could you

  1237. be my

  1238. savior

  1239. and my

  1240. lord

  1241. I now

  1242. know

  1243. that I

  1244. am unworthy

  1245. that you

  1246. do everything

  1247. and that you

  1248. do everything

  1249. to make me

  1250. right with

  1251. God

  1252. that I

  1253. might receive

  1254. eternal life

  1255. and live with

  1256. you forever

  1257. you do it

  1258. all

  1259. and there's

  1260. no better

  1261. time than

  1262. now to

  1263. make that

  1264. transaction

  1265. with God

  1266. in the name

  1267. of Jesus

  1268. and say

  1269. Jesus

  1270. I am not

  1271. worthy

  1272. you have

  1273. done it

  1274. all

  1275. it's all

  1276. your love

  1277. please take

  1278. me as

  1279. your child

  1280. come into

  1281. my life

  1282. and never

  1283. let me

  1284. go

  1285. there's no

  1286. better time

  1287. than now

  1288. to pray

  1289. that prayer

  1290. and for

  1291. all of us

  1292. who are

  1293. Christians

  1294. there is

  1295. no better

  1296. time than

  1297. just to do

  1298. a bit of

  1299. business

  1300. with Jesus

  1301. and say

  1302. Jesus

  1303. I confess

  1304. I've been

  1305. slipping in

  1306. to think

  1307. that it's

  1308. about my

  1309. worthiness

  1310. my abilities

  1311. my power

  1312. and

  1313. Lord

  1314. I just

  1315. thank you

  1316. that it's

  1317. all you

  1318. all your

  1319. love

  1320. all your

  1321. grace

  1322. all your

  1323. power

  1324. all your

  1325. salvation

  1326. it's all

  1327. you

  1328. your

  1329. endless

  1330. gift

  1331. love

  1332. grip me

  1333. with who

  1334. you are

  1335. grip me

  1336. with who

  1337. Jesus

  1338. is

  1339. let's

  1340. bow our

  1341. heads

  1342. in prayer

  1343. father

  1344. if there

  1345. are

  1346. those

  1347. here

  1348. who

  1349. are

  1350. still

  1351. searching

  1352. or

  1353. seeking

  1354. or

  1355. maybe

  1356. they

  1357. came

  1358. as

  1359. skeptics

  1360. father

  1361. I ask

  1362. that your

  1363. holy

  1364. spirit

  1365. would

  1366. move

  1367. gently

  1368. but

  1369. powerfully

  1370. in

  1371. their

  1372. hearts

  1373. if

  1374. there

  1375. are

  1376. those

  1377. here

  1378. father

  1379. who

  1380. can

  1381. feel

  1382. Jesus

  1383. knocking

  1384. at

  1385. the

  1386. door

  1387. of

  1388. their

  1389. hearts

  1390. father

  1391. I ask

  1392. that

  1393. your

  1394. holy

  1395. spirit

  1396. would

  1397. move

  1398. in

  1399. their

  1400. lives

  1401. that

  1402. this

  1403. would

  1404. be

  1405. the

  1406. time

  1407. that

  1408. they

  1409. respond

  1410. to

  1411. that

  1412. knocking

  1413. and

  1414. open

  1415. the

  1416. door

  1417. and

  1418. look

  1419. your

  1420. son

  1421. in

  1422. the

  1423. eye

  1424. and

  1425. say

  1426. Jesus

  1427. I

  1428. am

  1429. not

  1430. worthy

  1431. please

  1432. come

  1433. and

  1434. be

  1435. my

  1436. savior

  1437. and

  1438. live

  1439. within

  1440. me

  1441. forever

  1442. and

  1443. for

  1444. father

  1445. for

  1446. those

  1447. here

  1448. like

  1449. myself

  1450. who

  1451. are

  1452. followers

  1453. of

  1454. Jesus

  1455. we

  1456. confess

  1457. before

  1458. you

  1459. once

  1460. again

  1461. how

  1462. we

  1463. sneak

  1464. in

  1465. our

  1466. worthiness

  1467. and

  1468. we

  1469. thank

  1470. you

  1471. father

  1472. for

  1473. Jesus

  1474. we

  1475. thank

  1476. you

  1477. for

  1478. his

  1479. unending

  1480. gift

  1481. love

  1482. we

  1483. thank

  1484. you

  1485. father

  1486. that

  1487. our

  1488. eternal

  1489. life

  1490. our

  1491. salvation

  1492. the

  1493. putting

  1494. away

  1495. of

  1496. our

  1497. shame

  1498. and

  1499. our

  1500. sin

  1501. the

  1502. clothing

  1503. of

  1504. Christ

  1505. righteousness

  1506. that

  1507. it's

  1508. all

  1509. him

  1510. father

  1511. make

  1512. us

  1513. disciples

  1514. of

  1515. Jesus

  1516. who

  1517. are

  1518. gripped

  1519. by

  1520. the

  1521. gospel

  1522. learning

  1523. to

  1524. live

  1525. for

  1526. your

  1527. glory

  1528. and

  1529. all

  1530. these

  1531. things

  1532. we

  1533. ask

  1534. in

  1535. the

  1536. name

  1537. of

  1538. Jesus

  1539. your

  1540. son

  1541. and

  1542. our

  1543. savior

  1544. amen
