  1. Father, you know that we human beings have turned this wonderful part of the Bible into a battleground.

  2. And Father, we confess to you that we get so caught up often fighting with other Christians over what this means that we stop listening to your word.

  3. So Father, we ask that you would do a wonderful work in our hearts and our minds and our wills.

  4. And that Father, you would calm our minds and hearts and wills.

  5. That you would make our heart and mind and will more alive as you calm it.

  6. So that we might listen to what Jesus says.

  7. What he speaks to us, Father, by this part of your word written.

  8. Father, we ask that you would do this and we ask it in the precious name of Jesus, your son and our savior.

  9. Amen.

  10. Please be seated.

  11. So, I have sort of a love-hate relationship with superhero movies and those types of thrillers that involve some spectacular foe.

  12. Something, I don't know, like some giant corporation.

  13. Some evil criminal mastermind.

  14. Genius mastermind.

  15. Or just even, and or superhero movies.

  16. Because here's the thing that, like on one level I like them.

  17. But on the other hand, I'm almost always disappointed.

  18. Because it seems as if the way they work is that, like for 90% of the movie, or 95% of the movie, the evil criminal mastermind and his vast network, they seem to be unstoppable.

  19. They seem to be everywhere.

  20. They seem to be able to accomplish everything.

  21. And then for the last 5% of the movie, they can't do anything.

  22. And there's never any explanation.

  23. They just go from having power, power, power, power, to have like very little power so the good guy or a good gal can win.

  24. Same often with superhero movies.

  25. They have to get beat up a couple of times early on.

  26. And then for some reason, well, I don't know, like their superpowers kicked in.

  27. And it often just bugs the heck out of me when I'm watching it.

  28. And I've been thinking about it this week because I've had a couple of conversations in coffee shops.

  29. And that same type of inconsistency bothers a lot of people outside the Christian faith.

  30. They hear us say different things.

  31. And they understand everything we say, but they sort of, like I had just somebody tell me today, tell me this week, it's as if we don't catch the inconsistencies in the overarching story.

  32. So the text we're going to look at today actually in some ways makes it worse, but ultimately makes it better.

  33. So it'd be a great help to me if you turn in the Bible to John chapter 6.

    John 6 chapter mention

  34. John chapter 6, verse 1.

    John 6:1

  35. I began reading at verse 28 earlier.

  36. Now we're going to look at verse 1.

  37. Some of you who are longtime Christians go, oh my, John 6, that's a big battleground text.

  38. I wonder what George's view is on this.

  39. And that's why I prayed the prayer at the beginning.

  40. Because, well, we're going to look at the text rather than fight battles.

  41. What a unique idea.

  42. So here's how the text goes.

  43. After this, Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias.

  44. And a large crowd was following him because they saw the signs that he was doing on the sick.

  45. Just sort of pause there.

  46. That first verse, the Sea of Tiberias, that's actually one of those really interesting little things that shows that this was an eyewitness account.

  47. Because it wasn't a name that was used for that lake for a long time.

  48. It only started around the year 22.

  49. And so just one of those little tiny things that shows that John was probably, like, not probably, like, that it actually helps to emphasize that this biography of Jesus,

  50. because that's what we're reading, this biography of Jesus was written by somebody of the time, not later, trying to make up a story.

  51. Get back to verse 3.

  52. So Jesus, oh, and the other thing which is really neat is that, you know, this whole story is taking place?

  53. It has a name now that everyone here has heard of.

  54. The Golan Heights.

  55. Like a very, very controversial, war-torn, conflicted place.

  56. That's where this story is taking place, this first part.

  57. Anyway, verse 3.

  58. Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples.

  59. Now, the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand.

  60. And lifting up his eyes then, and seeing that a large crowd was coming toward him,

  61. Jesus said to Philip,

  62. Where are we to buy bread so that these people may eat?

  63. Jesus said this to test Philip, for he himself knew what he would do.

  64. Philip answered him, 200 denarii worth of bread would not be enough for each of them to get a little.

  65. And just sort of pause.

  66. If you're trying to figure out what on earth is a denarii, 200 denarii would be,

  67. if you take what the average Canadian wage is, 40 weeks of working.

  68. That's what it is.

  69. Very simple.

  70. 40 weeks of working for the average Canadian.

  71. That's 200 denarii.

  72. Verse 8.

  73. One of his disciples, Andrew Simon Peter's brother, said to Jesus,

  74. There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many?

  75. Just one other thing here.

  76. The barley loaves aren't like big loaves like this.

  77. They'd be sort of like a large roll.

  78. And the other thing is that barley loave is what the poor ate.

  79. So this is a very poor kid, lower working class.

  80. It's what the lower working class and the poor ate.

  81. Back to this.

  82. Verse 9.

  83. There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many?

  84. Jesus said, have the people sit down.

  85. Now, there was much grass in the place, so the men sat down, about 5,000 in number.

  86. It doesn't mean that there's only men there, but for whatever cultural reason, only the men sit down, the women and children stand.

  87. Not fair, but that's just the way it was back then.

  88. Jesus then took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated.

  89. So also the fish, as much as they wanted.

  90. And when they had eaten their full, remember, he just had five little loaves, five rolls and two dried fish, 5,000 men, an unknown number of women and children.

  91. And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, gather up the leftover fragments that nothing may be lost.

  92. So they gathered them up and filled 12 baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten.

  93. Now, let's just pause here about this.

  94. So this is, remember I said, I began by saying that one of the things that people don't get is, from the outside,

  95. is how that we Christians don't recognize that the overarching story of the gospel doesn't seem to make sense.

  96. So amongst other things, the question would be, how on earth could somebody, like if you believe that really happened,

  97. how on earth could somebody like that actually die on a cross?

  98. Like, that doesn't make any sense to me.

  99. It's like the superhero, the supervillain, who can do everything, and then at the end,

  100. oh gosh, all my power's gone and the good guy's gone, except it's reversed.

  101. Jesus is the good guy, right?

  102. So here he says, good guy, good guy, good guy, good guy, can do all these unbelievable things.

  103. At least, that's what a non-Christian would say.

  104. And then, like, it doesn't make any sense.

  105. It doesn't fit together at an intuitive and at an emotional level.

  106. Now, just to make matters worse, this is a really, really interesting story.

  107. And it's, other than the resurrection of Jesus from the grave,

  108. it's the only miracle recorded in all four biographies of Jesus.

  109. All four of the ancient biographies record this miracle, so they saw it was very important.

  110. And the other thing that's really neat about it is that the way the story is told,

  111. it emphasizes the nature, it emphasizes the miracle, and it emphasizes how public the miracle was.

  112. So, I've never been in a refugee camp.

  113. I've never had to go to a camp where people are starving and some food comes in a truck.

  114. But if some movies are even remotely accurate,

  115. I don't know if you've seen the beginning of the movie Black Hawk Down and people are starving,

  116. and the UN brings in some food.

  117. And it's almost like there's a mini-riot as they're just trying to,

  118. people are clamoring to get the food.

  119. They're sort of throwing food out.

  120. And it's, see, what, it's really what Jesus does is he has the crowd, 5,000 plus,

  121. he says, all sit down.

  122. So they all sit down.

  123. And when they all sit down, there's no big crowd.

  124. It's not as if there's a whole riot of people trying to get food from a truck or a wagon.

  125. And because of that, they wouldn't see how much food was on the wagon.

  126. They wouldn't know other than the disciples if, like, where all the food was coming from

  127. because it'd be a big, it'd be just a crowd.

  128. It'd be chaotic.

  129. But Jesus brings calm order.

  130. They all sit down.

  131. And the only one standing is Jesus.

  132. And they would have seen Jesus stand.

  133. He would have had a basket just like this.

  134. And he prays.

  135. And then he starts to break the bread and give it to the disciples.

  136. And the whole crowd would just see him as he breaks the bread and gives it to disciples.

  137. He just keeps doing it and doing it and doing it and doing it.

  138. And the baskets go off.

  139. And now the disciples start just breaking it and doing it and doing it and doing it.

  140. And 5,000 men plus all the women would see in an unmistakable way

  141. that Jesus has just fed maybe 20,000 people from a meal that might fill me.

  142. I have a pretty big appetite.

  143. And it would have been very public.

  144. Everybody would have seen it.

  145. So what's up with that?

  146. What's up with that?

  147. I'm going to explain the miracle in a moment.

  148. Or how I think Christians should understand it.

  149. But what I want you to understand is this ancient biography,

  150. all four of the ancient biographies of Jesus,

  151. they all record this miracle in the same way.

  152. And the very nature of the miracle emphasizes that this was the most public miracle

  153. that Jesus performed in his three years of ministry.

  154. So what's up?

  155. How could a guy who could do that die on a cross?

  156. That's what doesn't make sense to a lot of people.

  157. In fact, part of what is at the heart of the entire Islamic rejection of the Christian faith

  158. is, amongst other things, it just does not make sense

  159. that someone who could do that would die on a cross.

  160. Well, the story gets even more, it gets worse, in a sense, or better,

  161. depending on how you look at it,

  162. because the very next miracle is an unbelievable miracle.

  163. Not an unbelievable miracle, because I believe it.

  164. It's a spectacular miracle.

  165. This is a miracle that only the apostles would have seen,

  166. although the story is told in such a way that the crowd understands

  167. that something like a miracle must have happened,

  168. but they don't know what it was.

  169. And this is a miracle.

  170. It's one of the second most recorded,

  171. one of the group of second most recorded miracles in the ancient biographies.

  172. Three of the ancient biographies record this miracle in different ways.

  173. And it continues on in verse 16.

  174. When evening came, oh sorry, go up to verse 15,

  175. and perceiving then that they were about to come and make him,

  176. take him by force to make him king,

  177. Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself.

  178. See the bit of the problem?

  179. I mean, he didn't even have to use his miracle powers to avoid the crowd,

  180. so how on earth could a group of ragtag soldiers actually capture him,

  181. actually hammer him up on the cross,

  182. and actually keep him on the cross?

  183. Like, how on earth could that happen?

  184. So verse 16, so he withdraws to a mountain by himself.

  185. Verse 16, when evening came, his disciples went down to the sea.

  186. It's called a sea, but in many ways it's a big lake,

  187. seven by twelve miles, eleven and a half by twenty k.

  188. That's approximately the size of it.

  189. When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea,

  190. got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum.

  191. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them.

  192. The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing.

  193. When they had rowed about three or four miles,

  194. so no matter which way they'd started from,

  195. they're in the middle of the lake.

  196. Remember about seven miles by,

  197. seven by eleven or whatever, seven by twelve,

  198. eleven and a half k by twenty k.

  199. That's the size of the lake.

  200. They're about halfway into the lake.

  201. And when they, at verse 19 again,

  202. when they had rowed about three or four miles,

  203. they saw Jesus walking on the sea

  204. and coming near the boat,

  205. and they were frightened.

  206. And the original language is like they're terrified.

  207. They're terrified.

  208. But Jesus said to them,

  209. It is I, do not be afraid.

  210. Then they were glad to take him into the boat,

  211. and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.

  212. In other words, it went instantly.

  213. Jesus comes into the boat.

  214. He's walking on the water.

  215. He comes into the boat,

  216. and the boat now is at the shore.

  217. And you know they weren't all asleep

  218. having an hallucination because it's a huge storm.

  219. Okay?

  220. Like everything in this story is emphasizing

  221. that it's the claim of a spectacular miracle.

  222. And so what's up with this?

  223. How could a guy

  224. who can actually move

  225. 13 people in a boat

  226. four miles

  227. in the blink of an eye?

  228. A guy who can walk on water.

  229. How could he possibly die on a cross?

  230. If you could put up the first point, Andrew,

  231. that would be very, very helpful.

  232. Jesus reveals himself

  233. as the creator,

  234. the sustainer,

  235. and the recreator

  236. of all things.

  237. Jesus reveals himself

  238. as the creator of all things,

  239. the sustainer of all things,

  240. and the recreator of all things.

  241. I don't entirely like that last one,

  242. but it sort of fits with the rhythm.

  243. These two miracles

  244. are quite spectacular miracles.

  245. And Jesus reveals something

  246. about who he is.

  247. He reveals it in a very public way

  248. in the first case.

  249. And he reveals it.

  250. What happens in this miracle

  251. is that there's more matter

  252. in the universe

  253. after the miracle

  254. than there was before.

  255. That's the claim of the text.

  256. Out of nothing,

  257. Jesus makes bread.

  258. Out of nothing,

  259. he makes fish.

  260. What you're seeing here

  261. is in a sense,

  262. how does the gospel of John begin?

  263. In the beginning was the word,

  264. and the word was with God,

  265. and the word was God.

  266. He was with God in the beginning.

  267. All things were made through him,

  268. and without him,

  269. nothing was made that was made.

  270. In him was life,

  271. and the life was the light of men.

  272. And in this miracle,

  273. you are seeing the six days of creation

  274. enacted in front of them publicly.

  275. And you see,

  276. this is,

  277. you see,

  278. if this miracle is true,

  279. if this miracle is true,

  280. there really is a God

  281. that does exist.

  282. Things aren't just a result

  283. of random chance.

  284. And if God did create all things,

  285. then he doesn't,

  286. he's the one who sustains all things,

  287. and he can make more new things

  288. at any time he wants,

  289. because he's God.

  290. And that's what's revealed here.

  291. And the second thing is here,

  292. C.S. Lewis in his book,

  293. Miracles,

  294. has a very,

  295. he reminds Christians

  296. of a very old distinction

  297. that older writers knew.

  298. And that old distinction is

  299. that the miracles

  300. that are recorded in the Bible

  301. are of two types.

  302. Most of the miracles

  303. are what are called

  304. miracles of the old creation.

  305. In other words,

  306. miracles that fit in

  307. with how our created order

  308. right now is.

  309. But there's a small number

  310. of miracles,

  311. maybe just three or four,

  312. that are miracles

  313. of the new creation.

  314. And by that,

  315. Lewis says,

  316. they are miracles

  317. whereby for a brief moment,

  318. we see what the new heaven

  319. and the new earth

  320. will be like.

  321. Like after Jesus comes again

  322. and judges the living

  323. and the dead,

  324. and all things

  325. in this created order

  326. come to an end,

  327. and this entire created order

  328. is recreated,

  329. reborn,

  330. and made new,

  331. and we have resurrected bodies,

  332. and we walk in the garden

  333. with God

  334. in the cool of the day.

  335. This is one of three

  336. or four miracles

  337. in the New Testament

  338. that show us what the new,

  339. give us a bit of a glimpse

  340. of what the new heaven

  341. and the new earth

  342. will be like.

  343. And in the new heaven

  344. and the new earth,

  345. our bodies will have

  346. a very different relationship

  347. with our souls.

  348. And our redeemed bodies

  349. will react

  350. and live

  351. and move

  352. in this created order

  353. in a very,

  354. very different way.

  355. Brothers and sisters,

  356. if you are in Christ

  357. in the new heaven

  358. and the new earth,

  359. you will walk on water.

  360. You will walk on water.

  361. And you know how

  362. so many times now

  363. our bodies

  364. just get in the way

  365. of being able

  366. to deal with things

  367. like love?

  368. Like don't we have times

  369. maybe we hear of a son

  370. or a daughter

  371. or a friend

  372. far away

  373. and they're in trouble?

  374. And don't we wish

  375. we could just be there?

  376. But we can't just be there.

  377. Like gosh,

  378. you know,

  379. it's like on the other side,

  380. it's in Vancouver,

  381. it's in the States

  382. or it's just even

  383. in Canada

  384. and we're here

  385. and our bodies

  386. just get in the way

  387. and friends,

  388. brothers and sisters

  389. in Christ,

  390. in the new heaven

  391. and the new earth,

  392. your body goes

  393. from one spot

  394. to another.

  395. You don't have to be

  396. beamed up by Scotty.

  397. You just will it

  398. in the new heaven

  399. and the new earth.

  400. And this is,

  401. I mean on one level

  402. this makes the whole problem

  403. far more complicated

  404. and difficult

  405. for an outsider

  406. to understand

  407. how it is.

  408. George,

  409. if you're saying

  410. that what's being revealed here

  411. is Jesus is revealing

  412. that he's not just Jesus,

  413. that he is God,

  414. the son of God,

  415. that he is,

  416. that the naturalistic account

  417. of how things came to be

  418. is wrong

  419. and that there is in fact

  420. a creator of all things,

  421. a sustainer of all things

  422. and that the actual creator

  423. and sustainer of all things,

  424. he came and walked among us

  425. and this ancient biography

  426. is saying that it's true.

  427. He walked among us

  428. and that this same person

  429. who is God,

  430. the son of God,

  431. who's created all things,

  432. who walked among us

  433. is the same one

  434. who will one day

  435. make the new heaven

  436. and the new earth

  437. and he walked among us

  438. and there's not two people,

  439. there's one person

  440. and it's revealed as Jesus.

  441. How on earth

  442. could he die upon a cross?

  443. How on earth

  444. does that,

  445. like,

  446. what's up with that?

  447. What's up with that?

  448. So Jesus begins

  449. to explain it.

  450. We're going to just

  451. jump ahead,

  452. well actually no,

  453. we'll read it.

  454. Let's look at verse 22.

  455. So in the next day,

  456. John chapter 6,

    John 6:22

  457. verse 22,

  458. in the next day,

  459. the crowd that remained

  460. on the other side

  461. of the sea,

  462. remember that they're,

  463. you know,

  464. they're on the other side

  465. of the sea,

  466. it's mountainous,

  467. they saw that there

  468. had been only one boat there

  469. and that Jesus

  470. had not entered the boat.

  471. They'd been watching the boat

  472. and Jesus hadn't entered

  473. the boat with his disciples

  474. but his disciples

  475. had gone away alone.

  476. So other boats

  477. from Tiberias

  478. came near the place

  479. where they had eaten

  480. the bread

  481. after the Lord

  482. had given thanks.

  483. So when the crowd

  484. saw that Jesus

  485. was not there

  486. nor his disciples,

  487. they themselves

  488. got into the boats

  489. and went to Capernaum

  490. seeking Jesus.

  491. When they found him

  492. on the other side

  493. of the sea,

  494. they said to him,

  495. Rabbi,

  496. when did you come here?

  497. See how the story

  498. sort of points to the fact

  499. that there's a miracle?

  500. But Jesus doesn't answer

  501. what's going on,

  502. like how,

  503. he doesn't tell them

  504. anything about him

  505. walking on the water

  506. or him moving

  507. a whole boat,

  508. 12 men and himself,

  509. four miles,

  510. just like that.

  511. He goes to the heart.

  512. He goes to the heart.

  513. Like they'd like to know

  514. a fantastic story

  515. so people would buy them

  516. beer for years.

  517. Boy,

  518. you should see

  519. what I saw.

  520. Really?

  521. Tell us a story again.

  522. Here,

  523. buy a round.

  524. Buy a drink

  525. for my buddy here.

  526. He's going to tell me

  527. this great story.

  528. Right?

  529. That's what they want.

  530. They want to get beer

  531. for years

  532. with a great story.

  533. And Jesus goes

  534. to the heart.

  535. Verse 26,

  536. Jesus answered them,

  537. truly,

  538. truly,

  539. I say to you,

  540. you are seeking me

  541. not because you saw signs,

  542. in other words,

  543. a miracle that reveals something,

  544. but because you ate

  545. your fill of the loaves.

  546. Listen,

  547. these are working class

  548. men and women.

  549. In the ancient world

  550. and in many parts

  551. of the world today,

  552. people die of famine

  553. all the time.

  554. One bad crop

  555. could mean that

  556. most of you die.

  557. Boy,

  558. if there's a guy

  559. who can just make bread

  560. out of nothing,

  561. I want to hang out

  562. with that guy.

  563. I'm never going to die

  564. in a famine

  565. ever again.

  566. And then Jesus says,

  567. do not work

  568. for the food

  569. that perishes,

  570. but for the food

  571. that endures

  572. to eternal life,

  573. which the Son of Man

  574. will give you.

  575. For on him,

  576. God the Father

  577. has set a seal.

  578. Verse 28,

  579. then they said to him,

  580. what?

  581. Okay,

  582. okay,

  583. Jesus,

  584. listen,

  585. you're going to give me

  586. bread forever.

  587. Okay,

  588. what do I have to do?

  589. Very practical question.

  590. Then they said to him,

  591. what must we do

  592. to be doing the works

  593. of God?

  594. Okay,

  595. like,

  596. I know you're sort

  597. of a holy guy,

  598. so it probably doesn't

  599. mean getting drunk

  600. every night.

  601. It probably means

  602. the works of God,

  603. so what do we do?

  604. And verse 29,

  605. Jesus answered them,

  606. this is the work of God

  607. that you believe

  608. in whom he has sent.

  609. It's a bit of a riddle.

  610. The work is,

  611. you don't work.

  612. You catch that?

  613. It's a bit of a riddle.

  614. You know,

  615. this is the work of God,

  616. okay?

  617. Okay,

  618. I have to say,

  619. you know,

  620. 15 Hail Marys,

  621. you know,

  622. 20 whatever,

  623. I got to go to church,

  624. I got to learn how to sing

  625. the whole Chris Tomlin

  626. playlist by memory,

  627. like,

  628. you know,

  629. you pick your stuff,

  630. you know,

  631. I,

  632. you know,

  633. what is it?

  634. Okay,

  635. and he says,

  636. but this is the work of God,

  637. that you believe

  638. in him

  639. whom he has sent.

  640. So they said to him,

  641. that's not what they were asking,

  642. then what sign do you do

  643. that you,

  644. that we may see

  645. and believe you?

  646. What work do you perform

  647. if we're going to believe

  648. in you?

  649. Our fathers ate the manna

  650. in the wilderness,

  651. as it is written,

  652. and they quote Psalm 78,

    Psalms 78:24

  653. verse 24,

  654. he gave them bread

  655. from heaven to eat.

  656. Jesus then said to him,

  657. and just before you do,

  658. I read this,

  659. but see,

  660. here's an interesting thing

  661. about signs.

  662. They just saw Jesus make,

  663. feed 20,000 people

  664. from five buns

  665. and two fish.

  666. But it's not enough.

  667. You see,

  668. if we set up

  669. a whole pile of criteria

  670. for God to meet,

  671. if we set up

  672. a whole pile of criteria

  673. for Jesus to meet

  674. before we believe him,

  675. our arrogance,

  676. I apologize for insulting you,

  677. but our pride is insatiable,

  678. has no end.

  679. The goalposts will always move.

  680. Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah.

  681. Okay, you fit.

  682. Okay, 20,000.

  683. Do something better

  684. than I'll believe.

  685. Do something better

  686. than I'll believe.

  687. And it just keeps moving,

  688. right?

  689. Because you're standing

  690. in judgment.

  691. In fact,

  692. I mean,

  693. the main problem,

  694. one of the big problems

  695. in Canada is

  696. it might have been

  697. very well 100 years ago

  698. that the average Canadian

  699. would have understood

  700. that they were

  701. under God's judgment

  702. in some vague way

  703. or very specific way

  704. and it might have bothered them.

  705. But very few Canadians

  706. worry about that anymore.

  707. Why?

  708. Because virtually

  709. every Canadian

  710. is in judgment on God.

  711. Will God reach

  712. my standards?

  713. Will he explain

  714. his intolerable views

  715. and behaviors

  716. or improve them

  717. to my satisfaction

  718. before I will believe?

  719. As, once again,

  720. C.S. Lewis said it,

  721. in the older world,

  722. most,

  723. and in many parts

  724. of the world now,

  725. they have a very,

  726. and a very easy

  727. time understanding

  728. that they,

  729. in a sense,

  730. when they die,

  731. that they go

  732. on trial before God.

  733. But in our day and age,

  734. God is on trial

  735. to us.

  736. So here is,

  737. they've just seen

  738. a spectacular miracle.

  739. It's not good enough.

  740. So they say to Jesus,

  741. okay, do something better.

  742. Verse 32,

  743. Jesus then said to them,

  744. truly, truly,

  745. I say to you,

  746. it was not Moses

  747. who gave you

  748. the bread from heaven,

  749. but my father,

  750. I mean,

  751. he's just giving

  752. a bit of a technical.

  753. It wasn't Moses

  754. who did that.

  755. God did that.

  756. And that verse

  757. that you just quoted

  758. about needing bread

  759. that comes from heaven,

  760. he's going to say,

  761. the one who's standing

  762. in front of you

  763. fulfills that

  764. scripture text.

  765. Listen to it again,

  766. verse 32,

  767. truly, truly,

  768. I say to you,

  769. it was not Moses

  770. who gave them,

  771. gave you the bread

  772. from heaven,

  773. but my father gives you

  774. the true bread

  775. from heaven.

  776. For the bread of God

  777. is he,

  778. a person,

  779. who comes down

  780. from heaven

  781. and gives life

  782. to the world.

  783. They said to him,

  784. sir,

  785. give us this bread

  786. always.

  787. But notice here,

  788. now remember,

  789. so part of the thing

  790. which is the emotional puzzle,

  791. the intellectual,

  792. it's a bit of a puzzle

  793. for many people

  794. on the outside,

  795. the entire Muslim world,

  796. and for many,

  797. it's okay,

  798. you say that Jesus

  799. can make matter

  800. out of nothing.

  801. You say that he's going

  802. to create the new heaven

  803. and the new earth,

  804. he can walk on water,

  805. he can move objects

  806. in himself,

  807. and then he dies

  808. on the cross.

  809. If you could put up

  810. the next point,

  811. Andrew,

  812. that would be very helpful.

  813. What we see here

  814. is that Jesus comes down

  815. from heaven

  816. to give his life.

  817. In fact,

  818. as we see,

  819. how is it,

  820. you know,

  821. as we see here,

  822. because he loves me,

  823. he went to the cross

  824. to die for me.

  825. Because he loves me,

  826. he stayed on the cross

  827. and died for me.

  828. Because he loves me,

  829. he went to the cross

  830. to die for me.

  831. Because he loves me,

  832. he stayed on the cross

  833. and died for me.

  834. I just had a conversation

  835. about this week

  836. in a coffee shop.

  837. And, I mean,

  838. the person says

  839. they just have

  840. a very hard time believing.

  841. his experience of life

  842. is that people

  843. who are bigger than him

  844. take advantage of him.

  845. His experience of life

  846. is that his parents,

  847. he wasn't the favorite child.

  848. His parents had favorite children

  849. and he's a disappointment

  850. to his parents.

  851. and he's stuck

  852. in a bit of a dead-end job

  853. and he keeps getting

  854. passed over for promotion.

  855. And women

  856. that he's interested in

  857. don't ultimately

  858. stay with him.

  859. And his entire life

  860. is one of how

  861. people who matter

  862. pass him by

  863. or fail him.

  864. And so this idea

  865. that the same one

  866. who could create all things

  867. and sustain all things

  868. I could see him

  869. as I talked with him

  870. struggling with

  871. trying to get his mind

  872. around this idea

  873. that God himself

  874. would do this.

  875. Like, he has a very easy

  876. time believing

  877. that human beings

  878. are screwed up.

  879. In fact, he used

  880. a word that began

  881. with the word F

  882. many times

  883. in terms of describing

  884. how human beings are.

  885. And I tried to say to him,

  886. I tried to share with him

  887. that if you come

  888. to that realization

  889. then you know

  890. unless God does

  891. something

  892. where, I didn't use

  893. the F word,

  894. I said we're screwed.

  895. Like, unless

  896. God does something

  897. and that's the story here.

  898. And I said this

  899. for me

  900. and I believe

  901. there's good reasons

  902. for this,

  903. it's not just a story,

  904. a clever story

  905. to make you feel good.

  906. It really happened.

  907. Like it really happened.

  908. happened.

  909. And only love

  910. could explain

  911. why one who can make

  912. matter out of nothing

  913. would go to a cross,

  914. die and stay on the cross

  915. and die on the cross.

  916. Only love

  917. makes sense

  918. of why one

  919. who can walk on water

  920. would allow himself

  921. to be captured,

  922. mocked,

  923. put on a cross

  924. and stay on the cross.

  925. Only love

  926. makes sense

  927. of the inconsistency.

  928. And only

  929. a quite remarkable love

  930. for you and me

  931. makes sense of that.

  932. One of the things

  933. I shared with this person,

  934. I'll call him Bob,

  935. I said when Jesus

  936. was dying on the cross,

  937. he was thinking of you.

  938. He was thinking of you.

  939. He saw you.

  940. Well, okay.

  941. I mean, George,

  942. what's going on here?

  943. What's up?

  944. You know,

  945. I don't know what to say

  946. about this,

  947. but George,

  948. I just want to focus.

  949. I was listening

  950. when you read something earlier

  951. and doesn't Jesus

  952. go on to say something

  953. about whoever comes to me

  954. will never hunger,

  955. whoever believes in me

  956. will never thirst.

  957. George,

  958. that doesn't make any sense.

  959. Like,

  960. George,

  961. really,

  962. you've never,

  963. you don't keep hungry.

  964. And I know,

  965. I don't,

  966. it's meaning something spiritual,

  967. but George,

  968. that actually makes it harder.

  969. Do you actually

  970. expect me to believe

  971. that if I come to Jesus,

  972. I'll never have any hunger

  973. or thirst to gain

  974. for meaning?

  975. Like,

  976. George,

  977. you must get depressed.

  978. Don't you get tired?

  979. Don't you get grumpy?

  980. Don't you do bad things?

  981. Like,

  982. George,

  983. that doesn't make any sense.

  984. And in fact,

  985. actually,

  986. I,

  987. if we're honest,

  988. a lot of us Christians

  989. get very uncomfortable

  990. with these next few words

  991. that Jesus says

  992. because it bothers us

  993. that our experience

  994. doesn't seem to match up with it.

  995. I've,

  996. over the years,

  997. had many,

  998. many conversations

  999. with people

  1000. who say,

  1001. maybe I'm not really

  1002. a Christian

  1003. because I,

  1004. I feel so lonely

  1005. and I,

  1006. I feel defeated

1007. and this text of Jesus

  1008. that I'll never hunger

  1009. and thirst again.

  1010. George,

  1011. maybe I'm not a Christian.

  1012. Well,

1013. let's look what Jesus says.

  1014. Remember verse 34,

  1015. they say,

  1016. sir,

1017. give us this bread always.

  1018. Verse 35,

  1019. Jesus said to them,

1020. I am the bread of life.

  1021. Whoever comes to me

  1022. shall not hunger

1023. and whoever believes in me

  1024. shall never thirst.

  1025. It's our memory verse

  1026. for the week.

  1027. I encourage you

  1028. to memorize it

1029. and there's two other verses

  1030. in this text

1031. we should memorize as well

  1032. but just,

  1033. just pause for that

  1034. for a second.

1035. I'm going to talk about it

1036. but just listen to it again.

  1037. Jesus says to them,

  1038. Jesus who's revealed himself

1039. as the same as the one

  1040. who's created all things.

  1041. He is our creator.

  1042. You know,

  1043. it's,

  1044. it's very interesting

  1045. in Hollywood.

  1046. What is it

  1047. that Hollywood movies

1048. when they talk about cyborgs

1049. and robots coming to life,

1050. they want to meet their creator?

  1051. I mean,

  1052. these are non-Christian movies

1053. but we have this intuitive sense

  1054. that if there's a creator

1055. we should connect with him.

  1056. And Jesus is revealed

1057. as the creator of all things.

1058. He's revealed as the one

1059. who will create the new heaven

  1060. and the new earth.

  1061. And he says,

1062. in light of those revelations,

1063. I am the bread of life.

  1064. Whoever comes to me

  1065. shall not hunger

1066. and whoever believes in me

  1067. shall never thirst.

1068. But I said to you,

  1069. verse 36,

1070. that you have seen me

1071. and yet you do not believe.

  1072. Verse 37,

  1073. another verse to memorize.

1074. All that the Father gives me

  1075. will come to me

1076. and whoever comes to me

1077. I will never cast out.

1078. I will never cast out.

  1079. Whoever comes to me

1080. I will never cast out.

  1081. Brother and sister,

1082. I'm going to keep reading it,

  1083. but brother and sister,

  1084. are you depressed?

1085. Jesus will not cast you out.

  1086. Are you defeated?

1087. He will not cast you out.

1088. Are you worried about dying?

1089. He will not cast you out.

1090. Do you feel like you are

  1091. the world's worst loser?

1092. He will not cast you out.

1093. That's not George saying this.

1094. This is Jesus saying this.

  1095. Verse 38,

1096. For I have come down from heaven

1097. not to do my own will,

1098. but the will of him who sent me.

  1099. Verse 39,

1100. And this is the will of him

  1101. who sent me,

1102. that I should lose nothing

1103. of all that he has given me,

1104. but raise it up on the last day.

  1105. Listen to this again.

1106. And this is the will of him

  1107. who sent me,

1108. that I should lose nothing

1109. of all that he has given me,

1110. but raise it up on the last day.

  1111. Verse 40,

1112. For this is the will of my Father,

1113. that everyone who looks on the Son

  1114. and believes in him

  1115. should have eternal life,

1116. and I will raise him up

  1117. on the last day.

1118. That's why Jesus dies on the cross.

1119. Could you put up the next point, Andrew?

1120. Because I am a dead man walking,

1121. I need the true bread of life,

1122. so that I will not hunger,

  1123. thirst, and die,

  1124. but receive eternal life.

1125. Because I am a dead man walking,

1126. I need the true bread of life,

1127. so that I will not hunger,

  1128. thirst, and die,

  1129. but receive eternal life.

1130. You see, here's this thing

  1131. about what it means

  1132. amongst other things,

1133. that the most fundamental reason

  1134. this whole thing means

1135. about the bread of heaven,

  1136. never thirsting,

  1137. never hungering,

  1138. is that saying that

  1139. if we,

  1140. Jesus isn't saying,

  1141. like,

1142. I'm like this new powerful drug,

  1143. that, like,

1144. when you get this drug,

1145. it's like being on heroin,

1146. but you never come down,

1147. and you always have an,

  1148. like, it's not a drug,

  1149. he's not a drug

  1150. that just overwhelms you,

1151. he makes you more human,

1152. he's going to fit you

  1153. for the new heaven

  1154. and the new earth,

  1155. where you have body,

  1156. and you dwell,

1157. and you dwell with other people

  1158. for all eternity

  1159. in the new heaven

  1160. and the new earth,

  1161. and you'll be able

  1162. to walk on water,

  1163. you'll be able

  1164. to walk on water,

1165. you'll be able to eat,

1166. and that's the new heaven

  1167. and the new earth,

  1168. and it's not talking

  1169. about that,

  1170. and if you're interested

  1171. about the,

  1172. you know,

  1173. the whole thing

  1174. about whether this

  1175. is all about communion,

  1176. and you read commentaries,

  1177. and whole forests

  1178. have been killed

  1179. to discuss whether this

  1180. is referring to communion,

  1181. read my blog,

1182. I'm not going to go there

  1183. at all,

1184. read my blog about it,

1185. it's in there this week,

  1186. but you know what,

1187. what is this fundamental image?

  1188. What's,

1189. I looked it up this week,

  1190. every culture

1191. from what I can gather

  1192. has bread.

  1193. Every culture

  1194. has bread.

  1195. Ancient cultures,

1196. one of the first things

1197. that they would have been

  1198. able to manufacture

  1199. and make was bread.

  1200. Jesus doesn't say,

  1201. I am the caviar

  1202. of life.

  1203. Thanks be to God.

  1204. I'm not just stuff

  1205. that only weird,

  1206. sorry,

  1207. maybe you love caviar.

1208. The idea of eating fish eggs

  1209. is like just repulsive

  1210. to me, okay?

1211. I know I have to try it,

  1212. you know?

  1213. He doesn't say,

  1214. I am the escargot

  1215. of life,

  1216. or the frog legs

  1217. of life,

  1218. okay?

  1219. Sorry,

  1220. maybe you like,

  1221. if you like it,

  1222. good for you,

1223. if you like frog legs

  1224. and escargot.

  1225. You know,

1226. everybody has their own thing.

  1227. An article newspaper

  1228. recently that bugs

  1229. are going to be

  1230. the new thing

1231. that we're going to eat.

  1232. You know,

  1233. who knows, right?

1234. But what does he say?

  1235. If you watch

  1236. The Crown

  1237. on Netflix,

  1238. you'll see

  1239. the Queen of England

  1240. cutting bread

  1241. and eating it.

1242. And if you were to have seen,

  1243. you see shows

  1244. of very, very, very

  1245. poor people,

  1246. they eat bread.

  1247. The King eats bread,

  1248. the Queen eats bread,

  1249. I bet Bill Gates

  1250. eats bread.

  1251. Poor people eat bread.

  1252. Bread

  1253. is what everybody eats.

  1254. And it's a very profound image

1255. of when everything else goes,

1256. when you lose all of your money,

  1257. I mean,

1258. that you can at least

  1259. afford some bread.

  1260. In those old days,

1261. bread would have kept you alive

  1262. with water.

  1263. And, you know,

  1264. the other image is,

  1265. you know,

1266. it's as if we read this text

  1267. and we're expecting

  1268. certain emotional things

1269. and all of that type of stuff,

1270. but we forget the fact

  1271. that apart from Christ,

  1272. like,

  1273. every human being dies.

  1274. And apart from Christ,

  1275. every human being dies

  1276. and our death

  1277. is an image

  1278. and a foretaste

  1279. of, in a sense,

  1280. eternally dying

  1281. and eternally perishing.

1282. I am not some God.

1283. I am not some God

  1284. demanding a whole pile

  1285. of emotional experiences.

  1286. I act like I'm a God

  1287. demanding emotional

  1288. and spiritual experiences,

  1289. but that's not who I am.

  1290. I am a dead man walking.

  1291. I am a cut plant.

  1292. I am a cut flower.

  1293. I am a dead man walking.

1294. And what does Jesus say here?

1295. I have come down from heaven

1296. to give my life for the world.

1297. Would you eat of me?

  1298. You know what?

1299. What happens if we can eat bread?

  1300. We don't die.

  1301. You eat of me?

  1302. I won't,

  1303. you won't die.

  1304. You eat of me?

  1305. You will live eternally.

1306. I give you eternal life.

  1307. You won't,

  1308. I am a dead man walking.

1309. I need the true bread of life

1310. so that I will not hunger and die.

1311. I will not thirst and die,

  1312. but receive eternal life.

  1313. That's who I am.

1314. And kings need me and eat me

1315. and the poorest of the poor.

1316. And people in South Africa

  1317. and people in Japan

  1318. and people in Canada.

  1319. Just one thing,

1320. just to sort of wrap it up.

  1321. You know,

  1322. if you haven't,

  1323. you know,

  1324. these words are very,

  1325. very precious words.

1326. If you are here today

1327. and you have not given your life to Jesus,

1328. just listen again to verse 35.

1329. I am the bread of life.

  1330. Whoever comes to me

  1331. shall not hunger

1332. and whoever believes in me

  1333. shall never thirst.

  1334. Listen to verse 37.

1335. All that the Father gives me

  1336. will come to me

1337. and whoever comes to me

1338. I will never cast out.

  1339. Listen to verse 39.

1340. And this is the will of him

  1341. who sent me

1342. that I should lose nothing

1343. of all that he has given me

1344. but raise it up on the last day.

  1345. Listen to verse 40.

1346. For this is the will of my Father

1347. that everyone who looks on the Son

  1348. and believes in him

  1349. should have,

  1350. shall have eternal life

1351. and I will raise him up

  1352. on the last day.

  1353. Friend,

  1354. if you are here,

  1355. come to Jesus.

  1356. And here's,

1357. if you could put up the last point,

  1358. Andrew,

1359. that would be really good.

  1360. And there's a wonderful thing here

  1361. that Jesus says.

  1362. On one hand,

  1363. it's completely true

1364. that you have to come to Jesus.

  1365. On the other hand,

  1366. what is also true

1367. is you actually don't come to Jesus

  1368. on your own power.

  1369. The Father brings you.

  1370. I mean,

  1371. that's why,

  1372. you know,

1373. this person I was having

1374. a conversation with this week,

  1375. Bob,

1376. he asked me how it is

1377. that I came to faith

  1378. and I told him

  1379. that it was

1380. as if for a long,

  1381. long time,

  1382. for almost a year,

  1383. I could feel

  1384. that God was just

  1385. calling me

  1386. and urging me

  1387. and pushing me

1388. to give my life to Jesus

1389. and I was just resisting it

  1390. and resisting it

  1391. and resisting it.

  1392. And what we find,

1393. and this is such a wonderful comfort,

  1394. you know,

1395. if it was just up to me

  1396. to come to Jesus

1397. then maybe I'll turn away.

1398. If it's just up to me

  1399. to come to Jesus

  1400. then what happens

  1401. when I feel like a loser?

1402. What happens when I feel sick?

1403. What helps when I'm dying?

  1404. What happens

1405. if I have emotional problems?

  1406. Like,

1407. maybe I'll turn away from Jesus

1408. but what this text is saying us

  1409. is that,

  1410. yes,

  1411. on one hand,

  1412. I give my will

1413. and I say to Jesus,

  1414. I come to you,

  1415. I believe in you.

1416. Be my Savior and my Lord.

1417. Be that bread of heaven

1418. that I might eat of you

1419. and I will never hunger

  1420. and never thirst

1421. and I will have eternal life.

1422. I come to you, Jesus.

1423. But we don't just come to Jesus,

1424. it's the Father who carries us

1425. and he'll never let us go

1426. and once he has us in his hand

1427. and brings us to Jesus,

1428. he doesn't let us go

1429. and he will see that

1430. he will raise us up

  1431. at the end,

  1432. the last day.

  1433. That's why I've put up there

  1434. on the screen,

  1435. remember, Christian,

1436. that you did not merely believe

1437. in Jesus and come to him.

  1438. God the Father himself

  1439. gave you to Jesus

1440. and brought you to him.

1441. I invite you to stand, please.

  1442. Thank you.

1443. And all of us in different ways

  1444. have some business

  1445. to do with Jesus

  1446. this morning.

  1447. For some of us,

  1448. it might just be,

1449. Father, thank you so much

  1450. that my salvation

  1451. doesn't depend upon me

  1452. feeling so good,

1453. but that you carry me

  1454. to Jesus

  1455. and you carry me

  1456. throughout my life

1457. and you will carry me

  1458. into eternity

1459. to be with you forever.

1460. And that might be a response.

1461. And for some of us,

  1462. it might be,

  1463. Jesus,

1464. help me to believe in you.

1465. I want you to be

  1466. that bread of heaven

1467. that gives me eternal life.

  1468. I want the Father

1469. to carry me to you

  1470. and say that

  1471. with your own words.

  1472. There's no better time

1473. than now to just say that

  1474. with your own words.

  1475. Let's pray.

1476. Father, thank you for Jesus.

  1477. Thank you, Father,

  1478. that he reveals

1479. that you are the creator

  1480. of all things,

  1481. that you exist,

  1482. that you brought

  1483. all things into being,

  1484. that you sustain

  1485. all things into being.

  1486. And thank you, Father,

  1487. that he reveals

  1488. a little bit

1489. of what it will be like

1490. to have our resurrection bodies

  1491. in the new heaven

  1492. and the new earth.

  1493. And Father,

  1494. for those of us

1495. who are here in Jesus,

1496. fan into flame within us

  1497. a longing and yearning

  1498. to see you,

  1499. to know you,

1500. to be with you forever.

1501. Fan into flame within us

  1502. a greater longing

  1503. and yearning

  1504. to know you

1505. and to be known by you,

  1506. Father.

  1507. And Father,

1508. for any who are here

  1509. who have not yet

1510. given their lives to Jesus,

  1511. Father,

  1512. may your Holy Spirit

  1513. move deeply within them

  1514. that they might

1515. give their lives to Jesus.

1516. And if some have today

  1517. for the first time,

  1518. Father,

1519. pour out your Holy Spirit

1520. and your joy upon them.

  1521. And all these things

1522. we ask in the name of Jesus,

  1523. your Son

  1524. and our Savior.

  1525. Amen.
