  1. Good morning. That's kind of half-hearted. Okay, good morning. Oh, that's better. See,

  2. I've been at VBS all week with the kids, so I've had bananas thrown at me. I've had water poured

  3. over me. So this feels a little bit tame now being up here. So Kevin's right on the front row,

  4. maybe with some bananas at hand, but we'll see. My name's Chris. I'm one of the pastors here.

  5. And we've been going through a series looking at Christ in the Old Testament. Sometimes we read

  6. the Old Testament and we think, what's going on there? It seems to be very different from the New

  7. Testament. But we've been seeing how from Abraham all the way through to David and Mephibosheth last

  8. week, we've seen that actually the gospel message of the New Testament is in seed form throughout the

  9. Old Testament. And so we've been looking at these different stories to show us what Christ is like.

  10. And today we're going to kind of fast forward about 500 years from last week to 480 BC to the

  11. Persian Empire. God has taken his people Israel out of Israel into exile into Babylon. Now Babylon has

  12. fallen and a new empire has risen, which is the Persian Empire. Some Jews have gone back to Israel,

  13. but now many of these Jews have settled down in Persia. And that's where the story, the true story

  14. of Esther we're going to look at today comes from. We're going to close our series with this story.

  15. So I'm going to introduce the story and then we're going to have the scripture reading and then I'll share

  16. a little bit more about the scripture reading. But I want to introduce you to this amazing story

  17. because it's a little bit like a Korean, the plot line is kind of like a Korean drama or like a

  18. Brazilian soap opera. So, but the story of Esther is basically a story where the name of God is never

  19. mentioned in the story. It's the only book in scripture because the author wants to show you that

  20. sometimes even when God seems hidden, he's right there behind the scenes working through all the

  21. action. So I want to introduce you to the cast of this story. Okay. We have, first of all, King

  22. Ahasuerus or King Xerxes because Ahasuerus is a bit difficult to pronounce. He is impetuous. That's his

  23. Greek name, by the way. He is impetuous. He's ambitious and he's the most powerful man in the known world.

  24. He's the ruler of the Persian empire and he likes his drink. He, after his wife refuses to come out

  25. at one party to be with his friends, he, the drunk king divorces her and then suddenly realizes,

  26. oh, that was a mistake. And so what happens is his ministers come up with a plan. They come up with a

  27. plan to hold Miss Persia competition. And basically they're going to find all the best looking young

  28. women in the whole of Persia, bring them together for a competition and the winner gets to become

  29. King Xerxes' new bride. And so we have the next character, grumpy, stubborn Jew Mordecai. I don't know if you can see that.

  30. Now, he works as a bouncer at the palace of the king. He's a second or third generation Jewish guy

  31. living as a minority person in this foreign pagan land. And he's a stubborn guy. But he's also got a

  32. much younger cousin called Esther. And Esther was orphaned when she was young and he's brought her up

  33. as his own daughter. Now, the thing you need to know about Esther is she is really good looking.

  34. And she, she's like the, she's the diva. She's, she, but she's not really a very good Jew.

  35. Because when the Miss Persia competition gets announced, she gets dragged in to be one of the

  36. contestants. And do you know what happens? She ends up winning the competition. And, but in order to win

  37. the competition, she has to spend a night with the king. She keeps her identity as a Jew secret.

  38. And she plays this game so well that she goes from a nobody to the queen of the most powerful man in

  39. the world. She's in the palace as the queen. So we have King Xerxes. We have Mordecai. We have Esther,

  40. final character, final character, evil villain, Haman.

  41. Haman, the Agagite, is his family are Canaanites. For centuries, they had been enemies of the Jews.

  42. They'd made war against Moses, against Saul, against David. And now, Haman is going to make war

  43. against the Jews again. You see, he gets promoted to prime minister, and he's got a bit of an ego.

  44. And he wants everyone to know how great he is. So when he walks past in the morning,

  45. he wants everyone to bow as low as possible to him. But Mordecai, the Jew, he will not do it. He's

  46. not going to bow down to this guy's ego. And this really ticks off Haman. So much that Haman

  47. doesn't just want to get back at Mordecai. He wants to get back at the whole Jewish people.

  48. He gets the king, Xerxes, to sign a decree ordering the genocide of all the Jews.

  49. This is like the Holocaust. And he is willing to pay for this out of his own pocket. That's how much

  50. he's an enemy of the Jews. I'd like to invite Pui and Karen to come up and read today's passage for us.

  51. The scripture reading comes from Esther chapter 4. Please follow along in your bulletins or on the

    Esther 4 chapter mention

  52. screen. When Mordecai learned all that had been done, Mordecai tore his clothes and put on sackcloth

  53. and ashes and went out into the midst of the city. And he cried out with a loud and bitter cry.

  54. He went up to the entrance of the king's gate, for no one was allowed to enter the king's gate

  55. clothed in sackcloth. And in every province, wherever the king's command and his decree reached,

  56. there was great mourning among the Jews with fasting and weeping and lamenting. And many of

  57. them lay in sackcloth and ashes. When Esther's young women and her eunuchs came and told her,

  58. the queen was deeply distressed. She sent garments to clothe Mordecai so that he might take off his

  59. sackcloth, but he would not accept them. Then Esther called for Hatik, one of the king's eunuchs who had

  60. been appointed to attend her and ordered him to go to Mordecai to learn what this was and why it was.

  61. Hatik went out to Mordecai in the open square of the city in front of the king's gate. And Mordecai told

  62. him all that had happened to him and the exact sum of money that Haman had promised to pay into the

  63. king's treasuries for the destruction of the Jews. Mordecai also gave him a copy of the written decree

  64. issued in Susa for their destruction, that he might show it to Esther and explain it to her and command

  65. her to go to the king to beg his favor and plead with him on behalf of her people.

  66. And Hatik went and told Esther what Mordecai had said. Then Esther spoke to Hatik and commanded him

  67. to go to Mordecai and say, all the king's servants and the people of the king's provinces know that if

  68. any man or woman goes to the king inside the inner court without being called, there is but one law

  69. to be put to death, except the one to whom the king holds out the golden scepter so that he may live.

  70. But as for me, I have not been called to come into the king these 30 days. And he told Mordecai what

  71. Esther had said. Then Mordecai told them to reply to Esther, do not think to yourself that in the king's

  72. palace you will escape any more than all the other Jews. For if you keep silent at this time, relief and

  73. deliverance will rise for the Jews from another place. But you and your father's house will perish.

  74. And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this. Then Esther told

  75. them to reply to Mordecai, go, gather all the Jews to be found in Susa and hold a fast on my behalf.

  76. And do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my young woman will also fast as you do.

  77. Then I will go to the king, though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish. Mordecai then went

  78. away and did everything as Esther had ordered him. This is the word of God. Thank you guys.

  79. Let me just pray for us as we come and think about God's word.

  80. Father, this story from your word is a challenging and a powerful one.

  81. And I pray that you'd speak to us this morning. I pray that we wouldn't just be here wanting to hear

  82. a nice message, but we're here wanting to hear from you and to respond to what you want to say to us.

  83. Lord, I pray for my words that anything that's not from you, just remove it. And I pray that you'd

  84. speak with your spirit's power into our hearts, Lord. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  85. So, Mordecai. We're going to pick up the story. Mordecai has heard this death sentence on his people.

  86. And he tears his clothes and he puts on sackcloth, both of which tearing your clothes is a visible sign of the torn,

  87. broken heart that you have inside. And putting on sackcloth is uncomfortable, coarse material,

  88. is a sign visibly to show everyone, this is the pain that I'm going through.

  89. This is the discomfort in my life that I'm experiencing right now because every Jew from Ethiopia to India is under threat.

  90. And every one of them feels this pain and they follow suit and they put on sackcloth and ashes and they mourn together.

  91. Their identity is under threat.

  92. And yet Esther, who used to hang out with the other Jews, she's now moving in different circles.

  93. She's networking with the elites in the comfortable palace.

  94. And she's kind of cut off from the realities of what's going on with her people.

  95. Now she's got her own issues.

  96. You know, in the harem of the time, you would have lots of competition between the different concubines and wives.

  97. And so they're all trying to get the king's attention.

  98. But in verse 2, it says,

  99. No one was allowed to enter the king's gate into the palace clothed in sackcloth.

  100. Because in these circles, no one wants to be bothered by sad and depressed people.

  101. So if you're like Mordecai wearing sackcloth, you can't come in to the palace.

  102. But she gets a report from her beloved cousin Mordecai that he's in serious mourning and she wants to see him.

  103. She's distressed.

  104. So she sends him an extra set of clothes to help him be able to get into the palace so she can talk to him.

  105. But she doesn't get the pain of what's going on in their lives.

  106. And so he refuses to come.

  107. Finally, Esther takes the initiative to send her PA, Hatak, to learn what this was and why this was.

  108. Do you see?

  109. Her people are about to be wiped out and she's oblivious to the whole thing.

  110. Doesn't see what's going on.

  111. And so Hatak comes back with a terrible report from Mordecai with a flyer advertising the genocide.

  112. Verse 8 says,

  113. Mordecai gave him a copy of the written decree issued in Susa, it's the capital city, for their destruction.

  114. That he might show it to Esther and explain it to her, because she didn't understand,

  115. and command her to go to the king to beg his favor and plead with him on behalf of her people.

  116. You see what Mordecai is saying?

  117. He's saying, Esther, you're the only one who can stand before the king and plead our cause.

  118. You're the only one who can stop this death sentence.

  119. Help us.

  120. That's kind of passionate appeal.

  121. And Esther, living in the abundance of the palace, destruction of her people, just at hand, goes,

  122. Oh, that's a little bit tricky.

  123. She goes, I'd love to help, but you don't understand how it works in the palace.

  124. Verse 11, she says,

  125. All the king's servants and the people of the king's provinces know that if any man or woman enters without being called,

  126. and I'm no exception, I can't pull strings here, there is one law to be put to death,

  127. except there's only one exception, the one to whom the king holds out the golden scepter,

  128. so that he may live.

  129. But as for me, I haven't been called to the king for like these 30 days.

  130. Do you see what she's saying?

  131. She's saying, okay, I can send a check for victims of sport.

  132. I could even send a grief counselor to you just to help you.

  133. But what you're asking me to do is to risk everything for the sake of my people.

  134. And that just doesn't sound very appealing at the moment.

  135. Because you can't just enter in the king's court any old how,

  136. because you might die if you go the wrong way about this.

  137. The only exception is if the king puts out the golden scepter saying,

  138. You're accepted, you can come in.

  139. But she says, I'm not the flavor of the month at the moment.

  140. This isn't good timing for me.

  141. Okay?

  142. Listen, if it had been a couple of years ago, we were great, me and the king, good terms.

  143. But now it's not so good.

  144. Timing's not great.

  145. Excuses, excuses, excuses.

  146. Don't you often find like we like being a hero?

  147. We all kind of want to be a hero.

  148. You know, when you daydream, who is the hero in your daydreams?

  149. Me, I am, right?

  150. Well, not in your daydreams, in my daydreams.

  151. But when you face the reality of the real situations which require heroism, that's another issue.

  152. Because there's a cost involved.

  153. And Mordecai's response is, don't think to yourself.

  154. Literally.

  155. Don't imagine in your soul that in the king's palace, you will escape any more than the other Jews.

  156. What he's saying is, don't live in this daydream that the palace is going to protect you.

  157. Because it won't.

  158. He says, for if you keep silent at this time, relief and deliverance will rise for the Jews from another place.

  159. But you and your father's house will perish.

  160. He's saying, God wants to use you.

  161. But if you don't step out into what he's calling you to do, you're going to miss out on what he has for you.

  162. And in fact, it's going to be more serious than that.

  163. The judgment's going to come back to you.

  164. And then he says this famous line.

  165. And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this.

  166. He's saying, maybe God in his grace has brought you through this journey all the way where you can be in this position in the palace

  167. for precisely this moment where you can do what no one else can do.

  168. And will you turn your back on the very purpose and reason that God has placed you right here in this situation?

  169. And so Esther is persuaded by his appeal.

  170. But she's also scared.

  171. And so she calls for a fast to appeal to God to bring deliverance for them.

  172. And they pray as they fast.

  173. And Esther begins to courageously accept the mission as a mediator, as a representative on behalf of her people.

  174. And she says this.

  175. I will go.

  176. And if I perish, I perish.

  177. Because this is what I'm called to.

  178. Even if I lose everything, this is what I'm here for.

  179. It's a pretty powerful story.

  180. But let's, I want to just pull out a few things, three things from this story.

  181. How does this actually connect with us in our lives?

  182. So I've got three points.

  183. First point.

  184. God calls unworthy people.

  185. This is extraordinary.

  186. Because, you know, Esther has got where she is and Mordecai.

  187. They're these minority in a pagan majority culture.

  188. And she has compromised in many ways.

  189. You know, a hundred years earlier, a guy called Daniel had been in a similar situation in the court of the king of Babylon.

  190. And yet he had refused to compromise his own identity, even at the cost of his life.

  191. You know, the story of Daniel on the lion's den, all of those kind of things.

  192. But Esther, so Daniel is faithful to his God.

  193. Esther is a completely different story.

  194. You see, God's word required sexual purity.

  195. Unmarried, she sleeps with the king to win the competition.

  196. God's word said that Jews shouldn't intermarry with people of different religions.

  197. Esther had married the pagan king.

  198. God's word said that Jewish people should be distinctive in the sight of the nations around them.

  199. Esther had hidden her identity so that no one would really know she was a Jew, just so she could get on in life, blend in, move up the career ladder.

  200. Esther, in many, many ways, has compromised her identity, and she's been unfaithful.

  201. She'd wanted and settled for the comfort of the palace, was content to ignore what God had called her to.

  202. And this is where I find this challenging, because how many of us are sometimes like Esther?

  203. You know, we're a Christian, but in our workplace, we've never told anyone that we're a Christian,

  204. because if we're too out and proud about it, you know, sometimes it might cause more problems.

  205. It's easier to stay quiet, because that can help you to move up the ladder and be liked by everyone.

  206. You know, God calls believers to sex only within marriage relationship of one man and one woman.

  207. And Jesus even says, lust in your heart is like adultery.

  208. And yet, some of us regularly use porn.

  209. We have masturbation to fulfill our own pleasures.

  210. We sleep with our girlfriends or boyfriends.

  211. We even have lustful thoughts about people who are not our spouses.

  212. We compromise in so many ways.

  213. And we could go on in so many areas of our lives.

  214. Many of us, we want to live for God.

  215. We want to live and be on mission for Him.

  216. But our unfaithfulness to Him has destroyed a passion that we had to live for Him and His glory.

  217. The joy that we had seems to have been snatched away by just so many decisions that we've made

  218. where we know we have a guilt and a guilty conscience.

  219. Sometimes you don't feel you can share the gospel with other people,

  220. because frankly, we feel like we're a terrible witness.

  221. Sometimes we feel like we can't pray, or sometimes even come to the church,

  222. because we know we've not been as faithful as we should have been.

  223. Anyone like me?

  224. And just, you know, like a person who's decided to come off a chocolate addiction,

  225. and stupidly they eat one chocolate and they go,

  226. well, I've already failed with one, therefore I might as well eat the whole box.

  227. Like Esther, we settle from the failures that we've made

  228. to then just pursuing the comfort and compromise at the palace,

  229. where we just chase after our career, our studies, our kids' education,

  230. and that is central to everything we do.

  231. But we have denied the calling that God has got on our lives.

  232. And if we go on a long time living like that,

  233. you know what happens?

  234. God's voice can become so dull that we don't even hear Him,

  235. don't even hear what He's calling us to.

  236. And you know, we have a thousand excuses,

  237. just like Esther did, for why we're living that way.

  238. But if you're like that,

  239. what we need is what John Piper calls gutsy guilt.

  240. Because it's precisely Esther the unfaithful,

  241. Esther the compromiser,

  242. that through Mordecai, God is calling her again

  243. to stand up for her people,

  244. to identify herself as a Jew,

  245. and to live out her calling.

  246. She was Jewish in name,

  247. but not in behavior.

  248. But God had not given up on her.

  249. He was calling her again to be who she was.

  250. You know, there's this verse in Micah,

  251. which I've just been just really challenged by

  252. and encouraged by,

  253. which if you know that your own guilt

  254. and unfaithfulness holds you down,

  255. you need to memorize this verse.

  256. Micah 7 verse 8 says this,

    Micah 7:8

  257. He's saying,

  258. if you were a Christian

  259. and you have fallen in different ways

  260. and there's that guilt that comes on you,

  261. there's that sense of you just compromised

  262. because you don't know,

  263. you don't hear the call that God has on your life.

  264. God says,

  265. I'm calling you again to rise up again today

  266. to follow me.

  267. Your past compromise doesn't disqualify you

  268. from God's call on your life today.

  269. Yesterday was yesterday.

  270. Today is a new day.

  271. God calls you to rise up with gutsy guilt

  272. because he's got a call on your life.

  273. And he says,

  274. if you turn back in repentance and confession,

  275. you shall rise again

  276. because God is your light.

  277. Because God is your light.

  278. And if you're just religious,

  279. you come to church as fire insurance,

  280. you know,

  281. in case God's real

  282. or because you hope

  283. he'll make you a little bit better

  284. and your kids a little bit better.

  285. God is not interested

  286. in just making you religious.

  287. He's got a call on your life

  288. and he wants you to start

  289. by turning to him in surrender

  290. because he's got something greater for you

  291. than just living for the comforts

  292. of your own life.

  293. God calls unworthy people.

  294. Isn't that amazing?

  295. Secondly,

  296. we are called for the sake of others.

  297. Called for the sake of others.

  298. You know,

  299. the Jews are in mourning.

  300. They're oppressed from the palace

  301. because from the palace

  302. has come this decree of destruction.

  303. And yet Esther has truly flourished

  304. in the palace.

  305. She's received all the benefits

  306. while others are experiencing

  307. the oppression and pain.

  308. And yet Mordecai comes to her

  309. and he calls her to plead

  310. on behalf of her people.

  311. And he says that famous phrase,

  312. maybe you have come to the kingdom,

  313. to royalty,

  314. to the palace

  315. for such a time as this.

  316. What is he saying?

  317. He's saying you are blessed, Esther,

  318. to be a blessing.

  319. Esther,

  320. you may have been disgruntled

  321. because the king seems to have left you

  322. behind for 30 days.

  323. Maybe he's with other women

  324. and he hasn't been a faithful king

  325. because he wasn't.

  326. You focus on all the blessings

  327. that you don't have

  328. but you fail to see

  329. all that you are

  330. and who you are

  331. and where you are

  332. is not an accident.

  333. Do you know that?

  334. Who you are

  335. and where you are

  336. is not an accident.

  337. Because don't think

  338. that you've got

  339. all these blessings, Esther,

  340. in the palace

  341. simply because you made yourself beautiful.

  342. Your beauty is a gift.

  343. Don't think you got to this place

  344. where because you were so smart,

  345. because you were better

  346. than everyone else,

  347. because actually God

  348. has weaved you

  349. to this place.

  350. It's not from you.

  351. Sure, you've worked hard

  352. but all that you have

  353. is a gift from God.

  354. There is purpose

  355. behind your place

  356. in the palace

  357. and that purpose

  358. is bigger than yourself.

  359. God has brought you here

  360. to be a representative

  361. of his representative

  362. on behalf of his people

  363. to use your position

  364. for his purposes,

  365. not just for yours

  366. and for those

  367. who are in pain around you.

  368. That's what he's saying

  369. to Esther.

  370. And I've just been

  371. very challenged by this

  372. because if I'm honest

  373. and I've just been

  374. thinking about it,

  375. I think I

  376. and I think many of us

  377. in this church,

  378. we live in the palace.

  379. You know,

  380. as a white Westerner,

  381. I get respect

  382. just from the color

  383. of my skin.

  384. Isn't that ridiculous?

  385. Like,

  386. people in England

  387. are trying to go brown.

  388. People in Hong Kong

  389. are trying to get white.

  390. It's ridiculous.

  391. But many of us

  392. have good educations.

  393. Our kids go to good schools.

  394. We have good job prospects.

  395. We have opportunities.

  396. We speak English.

  397. We have access

  398. to financial resources.

  399. We have flats.

  400. Some of us.

  401. We have cars.

  402. Some of us.

  403. Even just living

  404. in the peace and security

  405. of Hong Kong

  406. is a place of blessing.

  407. Many places

  408. don't have that.

  409. We live in the palace.

  410. But don't we often

  411. get into comparing

  412. ourselves

  413. just with our other colleagues,

  414. just with our other classmates

  415. in the harem

  416. of our workplace,

  417. in the place

  418. of our schools

  419. or playgrounds,

  420. and it blinds us

  421. to see

  422. the hurting

  423. and the broken people

  424. around us.

  425. Because I know

  426. so well for myself,

  427. I shut myself

  428. in this little bubble.

  429. You know,

  430. we have similar kinds

  431. of friends

  432. who live in similar areas

  433. with similar problems,

  434. right?

  435. Don't we,

  436. if we're honest?

  437. But we don't see

  438. that we're blessed

  439. to be a blessing.

  440. You know,

  441. my dad has a PhD.

  442. If you have doctor

  443. before your name,

  444. that carries weight.

  445. But I've only ever seen

  446. my dad use,

  447. say,

  448. Dr. Thornton

  449. very few times.

  450. Do you know

  451. when I've seen him use it?

  452. It's when he's writing letters

  453. on behalf of asylum seekers.

  454. Because that doctorate

  455. was never meant

  456. to be purely for him.

  457. That doctorate

  458. was for that Iranian

  459. asylum seeker

  460. who was being unfairly treated

  461. and had no voice.

  462. That doctorate

  463. was for the defense

  464. of those who had no power.

  465. Sure,

  466. did he get a job through it?

  467. Yes.

  468. Did he get blessings

  469. through it?

  470. Yes.

  471. But it was never meant

  472. to be solely for him.

  473. There was a purpose

  474. beyond it.

  475. And so we have to look

  476. at all the things

  477. that we have

  478. and say,

  479. if you've got a flat,

  480. is your flat

  481. just for yourself

  482. and your family?

  483. Or are there other people

  484. that you are blessing

  485. through that blessing

  486. God has given you?

  487. Are the hurting

  488. and the needy

  489. and the broken?

  490. Are you using that

  491. for them?

  492. And if we come

  493. and say,

  494. well,

  495. not really,

  496. then we have to come

  497. before God

  498. and seriously ask ourselves,

  499. God,

  500. am I just living

  501. in the palace

  502. for the palace?

  503. And it doesn't matter

  504. whatever it is

  505. that we have.

  506. Have you ever thought

  507. you might be educated

  508. for a greater purpose

  509. than just your own

  510. career advancement?

  511. Have you ever thought

  512. you might have a job

  513. for more than just

  514. paying the bills?

  515. If you're a domestic helper,

  516. you're not just

  517. a domestic helper.

  518. You're God's kingdom representative

  519. to mediate his love

  520. and blessings

  521. to the family

  522. and the people

  523. and your employer

  524. around you.

  525. If you're a businessman,

  526. you're not just

  527. a businessman.

  528. You're God's representative

  529. to mediate

  530. with the resources

  531. and the gifts

  532. and the talents

  533. you have,

  534. God's blessing

  535. to people around you.

  536. If you're a lawyer,

  537. you're not just a lawyer.

  538. You're God's kingdom representative

  539. to mediate his blessings

  540. to the people around you.

  541. If you're a homemaker,

  542. you're not just a homemaker.

  543. You are God's kingdom representative

  544. to mediate his blessings

  545. to your family,

  546. to those at the school gates,

  547. to the helpers,

  548. to the mums,

  549. to the dads,

  550. whoever it is around you.

  551. If you're a student,

  552. you're not just a student.

  553. You're God's kingdom representative

  554. to mediate God's blessing

  555. to the needy,

  556. the people around you

  557. who need to know

  558. that Jesus loves them.

  559. That's what we're called for.

  560. That's what we're called for.

  561. And you know,

  562. if you're like me,

  563. sometimes we come with

  564. a thousand excuses

  565. like Esther.

  566. Well, it's not good timing.

  567. You don't know

  568. what it's like here.

  569. But God says,

  570. do you not know

  571. that maybe I have brought you

  572. to where you are

  573. for such a time as this?

  574. Will you see that God

  575. calls unworthy people,

  576. but he calls us

  577. for something bigger

  578. than just ourselves,

  579. for those who are

  580. outside the palace?

  581. You know,

  582. I think this is,

  583. I've just been praying

  584. about this.

  585. And I think,

  586. you see what Esther does,

  587. because this is actually

  588. really tough.

  589. When you've lived

  590. with a habit

  591. of living in the palace,

  592. like I think many of us,

  593. it's difficult.

  594. It's difficult.

  595. But I think what Esther does,

  596. she realizes

  597. how difficult

  598. her calling is.

  599. And so she starts

  600. at a place

  601. of fasting and prayer.

  602. And that's where

  603. I think all of us,

  604. I don't know

  605. what it means for you,

  606. but if in our CGs,

  607. if as a church,

  608. if as individuals

  609. and as families,

  610. we just start

  611. and get on our knees

  612. and say,

  613. God,

  614. thank you for everything

  615. you've given us,

  616. the blessings

  617. that we have.

  618. Show us how we can use these

  619. for your glory

  620. and for those around us.

  621. God is going to

  622. show you

  623. and he will call us

  624. out of the palace.

  625. Called unworthy people.

  626. Use our positions

  627. to be representatives

  628. for others.

  629. Thirdly,

  630. we have a need

  631. for our own mediator

  632. like Esther.

  633. You know,

  634. the story of Esther

  635. Esther ends up

  636. with Esther saving

  637. the whole of the Jewish people.

  638. The king listens to her.

  639. Her life is spared.

  640. All the Jewish people

  641. are saved and delivered.

  642. And so I can leave you

  643. with a kind of

  644. inspiring story

  645. of just be like Esther.

  646. Live out your call.

  647. But there's a problem.

  648. Because every single character

  649. in this story

  650. is flawed.

  651. Deeply flawed.

  652. And even Esther,

  653. even though I think

  654. she made one right decision,

  655. I think she still struggled

  656. to live out her life

  657. in the palace

  658. after that decision.

  659. I don't think

  660. she was just

  661. suddenly,

  662. miraculously,

  663. everything was suddenly better

  664. and she was perfect.

  665. I don't think so.

  666. Does anyone else

  667. struggle to live out

  668. this sense of call

  669. that God has on us?

  670. Am I the only one?

  671. You see,

  672. sometimes,

  673. you know,

  674. when you listen to talks

  675. which inspire you

  676. and you're like,

  677. okay,

  678. I'm really going to do that.

  679. And then by lunchtime,

  680. it's kind of,

  681. you just got distracted

  682. and you're back thinking

  683. about being in the palace.

  684. And yet,

  685. Mordecai

  686. comes and says,

  687. if you keep silent,

  688. deliverance will come

  689. from somewhere else

  690. but you and your family

  691. will perish.

  692. Just think,

  693. how many times

  694. have I kept silent?

  695. How many times,

  696. how many people

  697. have I actually kept silent

  698. when God had called me

  699. to reach out to them?

  700. I mean,

  701. it's countless people.

  702. How many times

  703. have we hoarded

  704. our blessings

  705. for ourselves?

  706. How many times

  707. have we stolen

  708. the blessings

  709. that God meant

  710. for other people

  711. and just tried

  712. to keep them?

  713. And yet,

  714. God is a king

  715. who also has a law.

  716. He's not like

  717. the other king.

  718. But he has a law

  719. which says thieves

  720. of his blessings

  721. should be judged.

  722. And the judgment

  723. of death

  724. that was upon

  725. all of the Jews,

  726. actually,

  727. he says,

  728. that's what every single

  729. one of us is under.

  730. There's a real reason

  731. why sometimes

  732. we feel guilty

  733. and condemned.

  734. Because when you break

  735. God's holy law,

  736. there is judgment.

  737. But Micah 7

  738. continues like this.

  739. Rejoice not over me,

  740. O my enemy.

  741. When I fall,

  742. I shall rise.

  743. When I sit in darkness,

  744. the Lord will be

  745. a light to me.

  746. I will bear

  747. the indignation

  748. of the Lord

  749. because I have

  750. sinned against him

  751. until he pleads

  752. my cause

  753. and executes

  754. judgment for me.

  755. He will bring me

  756. out to the light.

  757. I shall look upon

  758. his vindication.

  759. God is a holy king

  760. not like King Xerxes.

  761. He's not impetuous.

  762. He's not easily angered

  763. like Xerxes.

  764. But before him,

  765. none of us

  766. can enter in

  767. to that inner room

  768. of the throne room

  769. of his presence.

  770. We are shut out

  771. like Mordecai

  772. and no amount

  773. of tearing our clothes

  774. or religious duty

  775. can ever get you

  776. into the palace.

  777. We bear the indignation,

  778. the righteous anger

  779. that God has.

  780. The sentence is passed.

  781. Our only hope

  782. is if there is one person

  783. who has access

  784. to the king,

  785. who can plead

  786. our cause before him.

  787. We don't need

  788. Esther to save us.

  789. We don't need

  790. a human being

  791. who is flawed

  792. to save us.

  793. We need a greater Esther.

  794. Esther was tempted

  795. in many ways

  796. and sinned.

  797. Hebrews tells us

  798. Jesus was tempted

  799. in every way

  800. yet was without sin.

  801. Esther stayed

  802. in the palace

  803. and brought deliverance

  804. from there.

  805. Jesus left

  806. the palace

  807. of heaven

  808. and came down

  809. to where we were

  810. and brought deliverance

  811. for us

  812. because God the king

  813. desired relationship

  814. with us that much.

  815. Esther risked

  816. her life

  817. and said

  818. if I perish

  819. I perish

  820. and yet she lived.

  821. Jesus risked

  822. his life

  823. and said

  824. if I perish

  825. I perish

  826. and he died.

  827. God's righteous

  828. judgment

  829. has been executed

  830. but not on us

  831. but on him.

  832. There's no condemnation

  833. now

  834. which means

  835. we have a mediator

  836. an advocate

  837. a representative

  838. constantly

  839. before the throne

  840. of God

  841. who intercedes

  842. for us

  843. who's got your name

  844. written on his heart

  845. which is why

  846. God can call

  847. an unworthy person

  848. like you

  849. and me

  850. and say

  851. when I fall

  852. I shall rise

  853. because like the hymn

  854. says

  855. when Satan

  856. tempts me

  857. to despair

  858. tells me

  859. of the guilt

  860. within

  861. upward

  862. I look

  863. and see him

  864. there

  865. who made

  866. an end

  867. of all my sin

  868. because

  869. the sinless

  870. savior died

  871. my sinful soul

  872. is counted free

  873. for God the just

  874. is satisfied

  875. to look on him

  876. and pardon me.

  877. you know you can

  878. spend millions

  879. on getting a good

  880. lawyer to try

  881. and defend you

  882. God spent his

  883. only son

  884. spent his only

  885. son's life

  886. on a cross

  887. that we might

  888. have Jesus

  889. the best lawyer

  890. in the universe

  891. pleading for us

  892. in heaven's courts

  893. and do you know

  894. what

  895. Jesus wins

  896. every single case

  897. so we can

  898. enter in

  899. and see the

  900. golden scepter

  901. of God's

  902. approval

  903. you can come

  904. into the

  905. throne room

  906. of grace

  907. this is the

  908. gospel

  909. this is what

  910. it says

  911. in Hebrews

  912. let us then

  913. draw near

  914. with confidence

  915. to the throne

  916. of grace

  917. not a throne

  918. like Xerxes throne

  919. but a throne

  920. where God is

  921. longing to bring

  922. grace to you

  923. regardless of

  924. what you have

  925. done

  926. that we may

  927. find mercy

  928. and grace

  929. to help

  930. in time of

  931. need

  932. in time of

  933. need

  934. even with the

  935. calling that

  936. God has placed

  937. on us

  938. because we

  939. cannot do it

  940. by ourselves

  941. and if you

  942. see that you

  943. have Jesus

  944. what happens

  945. is this

  946. if your vision

  947. gets captured

  948. by who he

  949. is

  950. the reason

  951. we stay

  952. living for our

  953. palaces

  954. our tiny

  955. little puny

  956. palaces

  957. is because

  958. they capture

  959. our hearts

  960. but ultimately

  961. the palaces

  962. of the world

  963. of our career

  964. of our job

  965. of our reputation

  966. they're fragile

  967. if you want a

  968. bigger flat

  969. you get the

  970. bigger flat

  971. suddenly it

  972. feels like

  973. it's not big

  974. enough

  975. you get a

  976. job

  977. you want a

  978. job

  979. you get the

  980. job

  981. then soon

  982. afterwards

  983. it's like

  984. you want

  985. another job

  986. and whatever

  987. it is

  988. in our

  989. palace

  990. it never

  991. is enough

  992. but if

  993. you realize

  994. that you

  995. can enter

  996. into the

  997. palace

  998. of the

  999. king

  1000. of the

  1001. whole

  1002. universe

  1003. and you

  1004. have

  1005. relationship

  1006. with him

  1007. and it

  1008. will never

  1009. be taken

  1010. away

  1011. because that

  1012. scepter is

  1013. always coming

  1014. down saying

  1015. approved

  1016. that means

  1017. we confidently

  1018. enter him

  1019. and I can

  1020. risk my

  1021. own

  1022. little palace

  1023. because I

  1024. have a

  1025. greater one

  1026. Esther

  1027. faced with a

  1028. choice

  1029. to give up

  1030. the palace

  1031. to give up

  1032. her entire

  1033. life

  1034. to save

  1035. the people

  1036. or to hold

  1037. on to the

  1038. palace

  1039. and give up

  1040. her entire

  1041. people

  1042. and she

  1043. chooses the

  1044. greater calling

  1045. Jesus said

  1046. if anyone

  1047. would come

  1048. after me

  1049. let him

  1050. deny himself

  1051. take up his

  1052. cross and

  1053. follow me

  1054. whoever seeks

  1055. to save

  1056. his life

  1057. will lose

  1058. it

  1059. whoever loses

  1060. his life

  1061. for my

  1062. sake

  1063. will find

  1064. it

  1065. he's saying

  1066. there's a

  1067. greater palace

  1068. so that

  1069. means for us

  1070. you can take

  1071. a risk

  1072. to reach out

  1073. to those

  1074. in your

  1075. office

  1076. that maybe

  1077. are not

  1078. like you

  1079. that you

  1080. feel scared

  1081. to reach

  1082. out to

  1083. to go

  1084. and talk

  1085. to that

  1086. person

  1087. who you

  1088. may have

  1089. like no

  1090. idea what

  1091. to say

  1092. to them

  1093. to invite

  1094. a student

  1095. a single

  1096. or someone

  1097. else from

  1098. a different

  1099. background

  1100. into your

  1101. flat

  1102. even though

  1103. it seems

  1104. scary to

  1105. you

  1106. to join

  1107. sons and

  1108. daughters

  1109. of young

  1110. lives

  1111. to reach

  1112. out to

  1113. risk

  1114. whatever it

  1115. is that

  1116. God calls

  1117. us to

  1118. and if

  1119. I perish

  1120. I perish

  1121. if I'm

  1122. embarrassed

  1123. I'm

  1124. embarrassed

  1125. if it's

  1126. awkward

  1127. it's

  1128. awkward

  1129. if it

  1130. doesn't

  1131. work out

  1132. it doesn't

  1133. work out

  1134. if

  1135. people

  1136. laugh

  1137. at me

  1138. they

  1139. laugh

  1140. at me

  1141. and that's

  1142. okay

  1143. because the

  1144. palace of

  1145. my puny

  1146. reputation

  1147. and my

  1148. comfort

  1149. is nothing

  1150. compared to

  1151. the palace

  1152. that Jesus

  1153. has guide

  1154. and is

  1155. reigning

  1156. and is

  1157. interceding

  1158. for us

  1159. that we

  1160. may enter

  1161. into

  1162. that's

  1163. what this

  1164. series is

  1165. all about

  1166. the whole

  1167. of the

  1168. Old

  1169. Testament

  1170. is

  1171. trying to

  1172. give you

  1173. a glimpse

  1174. of a

  1175. vision

  1176. that a

  1177. saviour

  1178. Jesus

  1179. Christ

  1180. is

  1181. coming

  1182. it's

  1183. pointing

  1184. us

  1185. to the

  1186. only

  1187. righteous

  1188. one

  1189. who

  1190. can

  1191. make

  1192. us

  1193. righteous

  1194. it's

  1195. pointing

  1196. to the

  1197. one

  1198. like

  1199. Jacob

  1200. who

  1201. is

  1202. willing

  1203. to

  1204. wrestle

  1205. with

  1206. us

  1207. and be

  1208. defeated

  1209. so we

  1210. may

  1211. get

  1212. blessing

  1213. he's

  1214. the

  1215. one

  1216. who

  1217. shows

  1218. his

  1219. power

  1220. in

  1221. weakness

  1222. like

  1223. Gideon

  1224. he's

  1225. the

  1226. one

  1227. who

  1228. we

  1229. come

  1230. to

  1231. with

  1232. nothing

  1233. in

  1234. our

  1235. hands

  1236. like

  1237. Naaman

  1238. he's

  1239. the

  1240. one

  1241. who

  1242. welcomes

  1243. enemies

  1244. to

  1245. his

  1246. table

  1247. like

  1248. Mephibosheth

  1249. and he's

  1250. the

  1251. one

  1252. who

  1253. pleads

  1254. for

  1255. us

  1256. like

  1257. Esther

  1258. this

  1259. is

  1260. Jesus

  1261. Christ

  1262. that's

  1263. why

  1264. we

  1265. worship

  1266. him

  1267. from

  1268. the

  1269. beginning

  1270. of

  1271. the

  1272. Bible

  1273. to

  1274. the

  1275. end

  1276. it's

  1277. all

  1278. about

  1279. him

  1280. Folk

  1281. át

  1282. he

  1283. through
