  1. Great. Thank you, guys. Welcome. My name is Chris. I'm, again, one of the elders here at Watermark.

  2. If you have your booklet open, I encourage you to follow along in the Scripture passage.

  3. Keep this with you. If you've got a pen, write notes in it, because we're going to be going on this journey

  4. in 1 Peter over the next few weeks. And I'm excited about this book that we're going to go through together.

  5. We were in Thailand a couple of years ago, and Fiona and I were going out kayaking in the sea.

  6. And as we'd gone out a little way, we capsized. The boat overturned, and we realized we couldn't turn

  7. the boat back over. And then I had this strange feeling, but we were being dragged out by the

  8. current out into the sea. It was a frightening moment. And at that point, both of us realized

  9. we had to fight with all of our strength to swim with the boat to get back to shore, because

  10. our lives were at stake. But I don't know whether you have ever felt, if you were a Christian,

  11. like you're this small minority swimming against the current of society, a society which seems

  12. at times to have very different values, to have very different ways of thinking, to live

  13. for very different things than the gospel calls us to. And sometimes it feels like it's easier

  14. to go with the flow. And so as we saw from the video, we see how people are thinking in

  15. the world around us. And yet, as we come through this series, and we want to look in this series

  16. at 1 Peter, we want to see that actually God has called us to be a countercultural, a swimming

  17. against the tide community.

  18. And that's really what the book of 1 Peter is about. Because the book of 1 Peter is set

  19. in Turkey. Now, you can see on the screen, Turkey, we went there this year with a few of us, a couple

  20. of us from Watermark. And what happened is after Pentecost, when God's Spirit came upon God's

  21. people, there were Jews from all around the area, including places like Cappadocia, and Asia,

  22. and Pontus. And what you see is 30 years later, the gospel and the church has started to spread.

  23. The gospel has started spreading. It's reached into Turkey, and small little house churches

  24. have started springing up in the midst of the Roman Empire, people who are trusting in Jesus

  25. as their savior. And we visited a couple of these places last year. Cappadocia, it's an amazing place

  26. if you ever get to go there. Asia is where Ephesus and where a lot of the New Testament is written into.

  27. And the apostle Peter is writing from Rome. And he's writing to these small minority groups in Rome

  28. of people who feel like they're just swimming against the current of a Roman Empire,

  29. which seems to stand against them. You know, this is just a couple of years before the Roman Emperor

  30. Nero burnt the city of Rome to try and get planning permission to rebuild a great palace for himself.

  31. And he blamed it on the Christians. And hundreds of Christians, including the apostle Peter,

  32. were executed during that time. This is just a couple of years written before that time.

  33. And it's a time where everyone around thought they were really tolerant.

  34. You see, they had hundreds of gods. If you ever go to Turkey, you'll see temples everywhere.

  35. And they'll accept any gods, except you can't be too exclusive.

  36. If you say there's only one god, and you say there's only one way to god, well, that's intolerance.

  37. And they also called Christians atheists. Because if you went to the company dinner,

  38. you were expected to bow down and put some incense to the goddess of fertility, Artemis,

  39. or the god of wine, Bacchus. But Christians wouldn't do that.

  40. You know, we go to the cinema and watch people killing each other on the screen.

  41. They would go to the amphitheater and watch gladiators killing each other in the flesh.

  42. But the Christians wouldn't go.

  43. Men would go to the baths and pick up prostitutes down there to play around with.

  44. But Christians wouldn't.

  45. And so Christians began to get called also haters of humanity.

  46. You're so intolerant. You're no fun.

  47. They will be mocked. You're narrow-minded.

  48. You know, here is, this is one of the earliest graffitis about Christians.

  49. What it is, it's a, instead of Christ on the cross, they placed a donkey there.

  50. And it actually says, Alexamonus worships his god.

  51. They would mock Christians for their beliefs.

  52. This was the culture that one Peter is set in.

  53. And it's not so different from many of our cultures.

  54. And Peter is writing this letter to say to them,

  55. keep swimming against the tide, guys.

  56. Keep swimming against the tide.

  57. Remember four things.

  58. And here's the four things we're going to look at today.

  59. Remember, you're a different people.

  60. You have a different hope.

  61. You have a different view of trials and suffering.

  62. And you have a different joy.

  63. Okay?

  64. Are you with me?

  65. Good.

  66. Well, let's go and look into this passage together.

  67. We're different people.

  68. He starts off, verse 1 and 2, he says,

  69. As elect exiles, to those who are elect exiles,

  70. or it could be foreigners or sojourners, is another word.

  71. Peter is using an Old Testament term described for the people of Israel

  72. when they were in Egypt and then they wandered in the wilderness after the Exodus.

  73. They were a people who were away from home, surrounded by a pagan people.

  74. And he says,

  75. Of the dispersion.

  76. And the Jews during that time had been,

  77. a couple of times had been sent away in exile,

  78. scattered around to different countries, different nations.

  79. And Peter is saying to these groups of Christians,

  80. You are like the people of Israel in the past.

  81. You are like God's people.

  82. You're scattered.

  83. You're not at home.

  84. You're refugees in this world.

  85. The values of the world conflict with the values of Christ and his kingdom.

  86. And you may feel like you're a foreigner here.

  87. You know, in England, if you walk into a village pub,

  88. it's really interesting.

  89. If you're not from there,

  90. it's fascinating because everyone's having conversations.

  91. And then you walk into the room and suddenly everyone stops and stares at you.

  92. As if you're like some kind of extinct animal from outer space.

  93. Because you're not from there.

  94. You speak differently.

  95. You think differently.

  96. You don't belong.

  97. And it's a weird feeling because we desperately want to belong.

  98. Isn't that one of the reasons why if we're Christians,

  99. sometimes we struggle to share our faith?

  100. Because we want to belong.

  101. We don't want to feel like a strange animal in society.

  102. And Peter is saying,

  103. If you're accepted around, that's amazing.

  104. But don't be surprised if you're not.

  105. If people don't get all your choices to follow Jesus.

  106. Because this isn't your home.

  107. You're a foreigner.

  108. You're an exile here.

  109. You know, some people think that the church should be right at the center of society.

  110. You know, and they become very complaining that, you know,

  111. society is no longer holding on to Christian values.

  112. And they think everything is going wrong.

  113. Well, Peter, actually, he would say,

  114. No, in fact, it's normal Christianity when church is on the margins.

  115. Because you're in exile.

  116. Here's not your home.

  117. Do you know, the last year,

  118. the leader of the third biggest political party in the UK

  119. had to resign because of his Christian beliefs

  120. about things like abortion and sexuality.

  121. And he wasn't allowed to stay as leader.

  122. When I was at university,

  123. they tried to shut down our Christian group on campus

  124. because we refused to say that all religions led to God.

  125. We were told we were intolerant.

  126. And Peter says,

  127. Don't be surprised.

  128. That's normal Christianity

  129. because we're exiles.

  130. We're foreigners.

  131. And yet, he says,

  132. We're elect exiles.

  133. And elect means chosen.

  134. Notice he says,

  135. By the foreknowledge of the Father,

  136. the sanctification of the Spirit

  137. for obedience to Jesus.

  138. He's saying,

  139. The whole of the Trinity

  140. has his eye on you,

  141. has chosen you,

  142. and being on the margins is not an accident

  143. because God has you.

  144. You're his.

  145. You may feel like a foreigner around here,

  146. but you're not a foreigner to God,

  147. the living God who rules over this world.

  148. He says,

  149. You're secure.

  150. And as a bride is set apart for her husband

  151. to please him,

  152. even if everyone else looks down

  153. and laughs at her,

  154. if she sees the delight of her husband,

  155. then everything's okay.

  156. That's what Peter's saying to the church here.

  157. If you know you're set apart for God

  158. and his delight,

  159. you are his treasure,

  160. you're for his eyes only,

  161. then even though you may feel like you're foreigners,

  162. you're secure and you're held by him.

  163. That's the kind of people,

  164. a different kind of people that we are.

  165. So we're not just a different people.

  166. We also have a different hope.

  167. Verse 3,

  168. he says,

  169. He has caused you,

  170. according to his great mercy,

  171. he has caused you

  172. to be born again

  173. to a living hope.

  174. You know when you were born,

  175. you became alive in a physical world,

  176. right?

  177. When you are born again,

  178. you become alive in a spiritual world,

  179. in a relationship with a living God

  180. through trusting in Jesus' death

  181. and resurrection.

  182. And he says,

  183. Salvation,

  184. it's not just about

  185. what happened to you in the past,

  186. it's also about

  187. where God's taking you in the future.

  188. And he says,

  189. you have a living hope.

  190. And that could mean a couple of things.

  191. It could mean either

  192. it's not a dead hope.

  193. You know,

  194. if England are playing football

  195. and you have hope for them,

  196. that is a dead hope.

  197. But this is a living hope,

  198. a hope which doesn't disappoint you.

  199. I know that too well.

  200. But it's a hope

  201. that doesn't disappoint you.

  202. Your future is not uncertain

  203. if you trust in Christ.

  204. Did you know that?

  205. Your future,

  206. you may feel it's uncertain,

  207. but scripture says

  208. it is not uncertain.

  209. It is 100% guaranteed.

  210. Because Jesus rose from the dead

  211. and you will rise with him

  212. if you have trusted in him.

  213. It's a living hope.

  214. But it's not just a living hope.

  215. It also can be translated

  216. a hope of life.

  217. Because

  218. through the resurrection of Jesus,

  219. where he overcame death

  220. and sin

  221. and sickness

  222. and pain,

  223. all the things which haunt us

  224. in this world,

  225. the things which they shared

  226. on the video,

  227. which we don't like,

  228. which we feel are wrong

  229. in the world.

  230. Well, he says

  231. there's going to be

  232. a new creation

  233. with a new body

  234. and a new earth

  235. that God will recreate,

  236. which will be teeming with life.

  237. That's the hope

  238. that he's called us to.

  239. But he's spelled it out.

  240. He says

  241. it's a living hope

  242. and to an inheritance,

  243. okay,

  244. an inheritance

  245. that is imperishable.

  246. It can't perish

  247. like to your family

  248. and my loved ones can.

  249. It is undefiled.

  250. That means it can't spoil

  251. like chocolate cake

  252. can spoil.

  253. And it can't fade

  254. like my iPhone battery

  255. fades.

  256. You know,

  257. in our world,

  258. they say,

  259. scientists say

  260. there's something called entropy,

  261. which basically means

  262. the world

  263. tends towards chaos

  264. and decay

  265. and disorder.

  266. And the way

  267. this current world is,

  268. it's a bit like

  269. when I used to,

  270. when I was young,

  271. we went on holiday,

  272. we used to go to the beach

  273. and I would build sandcastles

  274. and I'd make amazing sandcastles.

  275. Sandcastles,

  276. you could put balls in

  277. and run around.

  278. It was incredible.

  279. And I'd make sure

  280. that they were secure

  281. from the tide coming in.

  282. I'd build a moat around them

  283. and things like that.

  284. But then,

  285. if you stayed for a few hours,

  286. do you know what you'd see?

  287. The tide would start coming in

  288. and would very slowly

  289. just start to wash away

  290. the beautiful creation

  291. that I had built

  292. until eventually

  293. there was nothing left.

  294. You see,

  295. that's something

  296. that's perishable,

  297. can spoil,

  298. and can fade.

  299. And our culture

  300. tells us

  301. that through adverts,

  302. through all kinds

  303. of different things,

  304. that we are to place

  305. our hope

  306. in sandcastles.

  307. They mentioned a couple

  308. on the video,

  309. planning.

  310. I'd never thought of planning

  311. as being a hope,

  312. but anyway.

  313. Great food,

  314. a holiday,

  315. a new wardrobe,

  316. friends,

  317. good grades,

  318. job opportunities,

  319. health,

  320. a listening husband,

  321. whatever it is

  322. that you put your hope in

  323. and you desire

  324. because you think

  325. it's going to make you happy

  326. right now.

  327. Peter would say,

  328. that's like a sandcastle

  329. that's perishable.

  330. Because just think

  331. about a vacation,

  332. you know,

  333. some of you come back

  334. from vacations

  335. and you spent a long time

  336. planning your vacation

  337. with hope that it was going

  338. to be an amazing time

  339. and maybe it was an amazing time

  340. but you come back

  341. and then suddenly

  342. what do you want to do?

  343. You want to go on

  344. another vacation again.

  345. Right?

  346. Because does that hope last?

  347. Does it fully satisfy?

  348. C.S. Lewis once said this,

  349. he said,

  350. there have been times

  351. when I think

  352. we do not desire heaven,

  353. a living hope,

  354. but more often

  355. I find myself wondering

  356. whether in our heart of hearts

  357. we have ever desired

  358. anything else.

  359. You see,

  360. our greatest desires

  361. are sandcastles

  362. which are a fading glimpse

  363. of a world

  364. that is unfading,

  365. of an imperishable inheritance

  366. that God has for you.

  367. Now,

  368. sandcastles are great.

  369. You know,

  370. if you could take your kids

  371. to the beach,

  372. don't tell them,

  373. don't build a sandcastle

  374. because it's going to get

  375. washed away in a few hours.

  376. You don't do that.

  377. You enjoy it in the moment

  378. but you don't put your hope

  379. in any of these things

  380. which are sandcastles

  381. because Peter says

  382. you are made

  383. for a living hope,

  384. one that will not fade,

  385. one that will not get washed away.

  386. He says for a salvation

  387. that will be revealed

  388. in the last time

  389. and he says

  390. that salvation

  391. will be at the revelation,

  392. the revealing of Jesus

  393. when he comes back again.

  394. Do you know,

  395. I've just been thinking about this,

  396. even this week,

  397. the whole of the New Testament,

  398. almost every book

  399. shouts for us

  400. to live in the light

  401. of Jesus' return.

  402. You know,

  403. in Acts it says

  404. when Jesus is taken up

  405. and he says

  406. the angels come

  407. to the disciples

  408. and says

  409. he's going to come back

  410. in the same way

  411. that he left.

  412. And then you see

  413. in Corinthians it says

  414. listen,

  415. I'm giving you

  416. every spiritual gift now

  417. while you wait

  418. for the revealing of Jesus.

  419. Paul also prays,

  420. he says,

  421. Maranatha,

  422. Lord come back.

  423. You know the Lord's prayer,

  424. part of it says

  425. your kingdom come,

  426. your will be done

  427. on earth

  428. as it is in heaven.

  429. That is ultimately

  430. a prayer for God

  431. to come back

  432. and restore

  433. and renew everything.

  434. And so as I've been

  435. thinking about it,

  436. the question that's come to me

  437. is

  438. when did I last

  439. pray for Jesus to return?

  440. When did you last

  441. pray for Jesus to return?

  442. When did we actually

  443. last think about

  444. the fact

  445. that there is

  446. something more

  447. than the little hopes

  448. that I live my life for?

  449. Do we spend our time

  450. thinking more

  451. about a living hope

  452. or more

  453. about a fading hope

  454. in our lives?

  455. Because the rest

  456. of our culture

  457. tells us

  458. to chase after

  459. fading sandcastles.

  460. and I've just thought

  461. why is it

  462. that there is this gap

  463. in my life

  464. and this gap

  465. which I think

  466. in many of our lives

  467. between what

  468. first century

  469. biblical Christianity is

  470. and the way

  471. that we live right now

  472. in terms of

  473. what we're hoping in?

  474. And I,

  475. there's many reasons

  476. but I thought of

  477. a couple of reasons.

  478. One reason

  479. is I think

  480. we swim

  481. in a culture

  482. that promotes

  483. comfort to us.

  484. Do you know

  485. like

  486. 150 years ago

  487. every single one

  488. of us

  489. would probably

  490. have had

  491. half of our

  492. family members die.

  493. You know

  494. a quarter of the women

  495. would have died

  496. in childbirth.

  497. There was no air con

  498. not much medication

  499. there were no iPhones

  500. and food

  501. was your dream.

  502. Just getting enough food

  503. man

  504. that was all

  505. you lived for.

  506. Life was tough

  507. and in many places

  508. in the world

  509. it still is tough

  510. right?

  511. You see that on the news.

  512. But now we have

  513. this incredible technology

  514. which has changed

  515. our experience

  516. of the world.

  517. It's amazing.

  518. Our greatest problems

  519. are no longer

  520. where do I get my food from

  521. but which restaurant

  522. shall I choose today?

  523. We have air con

  524. life expectancy

  525. is longer

  526. and it's amazing

  527. but it deludes us

  528. into feeling

  529. like we can have

  530. heaven on earth

  531. right now.

  532. You know

  533. and this feeling

  534. infects even the church.

  535. If you go to

  536. Elin bookstore

  537. or one of the bookstores

  538. you just see

  539. how many books

  540. there are telling you

  541. that you can have

  542. your best life now.

  543. Just God wants you

  544. to have all

  545. full prosperity now.

  546. He wants you

  547. to have heaven now.

  548. You know

  549. yesterday lunchtime

  550. I was cooking lunch

  551. I was trying to put

  552. washing in the washer

  553. a lot of things on

  554. and then the washing machine

  555. died.

  556. And do you know

  557. what my first thought was?

  558. I can't believe

  559. this is happening

  560. to me right now.

  561. There are so many

  562. other things I've got on.

  563. Why me?

  564. Why right now?

  565. Because

  566. I feel entitled

  567. for life

  568. to work out

  569. my way

  570. right now.

  571. I think

  572. that I'm so used

  573. to comfort

  574. that any discomfort

  575. that interrupts

  576. the way I think

  577. washing should be

  578. I just think

  579. it's somehow

  580. out of order.

  581. But Pluto

  582. is telling us

  583. that actually

  584. maybe I'm more

  585. like a spoiled child

  586. who hasn't realized

  587. that my hope

  588. is not in a heavenly

  589. kingdom now.

  590. It's in a living hope

  591. that when Jesus returns

  592. he will bring back.

  593. We live in a culture

  594. of comfort.

  595. I want to give

  596. one more reason

  597. why we don't often feel

  598. we fix our eyes

  599. on Jesus' return.

  600. Because sometimes

  601. it just feels

  602. a little bit distant

  603. and a little bit intangible.

  604. Does anyone feel like that?

  605. You know in verse 8

  606. even Peter admits

  607. he says

  608. you don't see him now.

  609. And you know

  610. I know Jesus

  611. is coming back

  612. in my head

  613. but it doesn't feel

  614. quite so real.

  615. It's been a couple

  616. of thousand years

  617. since he came last time.

  618. And you know

  619. the sand castles

  620. that I live for

  621. the hopes that I live for

  622. seem so much more immediate.

  623. The urgent overtakes

  624. the important.

  625. Right?

  626. But even in the first century

  627. people were thinking

  628. the same.

  629. You know

  630. the next book

  631. to Peter

  632. people are saying

  633. yeah where's Jesus

  634. come up?

  635. And Peter says to them

  636. listen

  637. God's not slow

  638. as you think

  639. he is slow

  640. in coming

  641. but he's patient

  642. with you.

  643. He's not wanting

  644. anyone to perish

  645. but all to come

  646. to repentance.

  647. In other words

  648. he's saying

  649. now is a season

  650. where the gospel

  651. is to go out

  652. into people's lives.

  653. And he will go out

  654. until he returns

  655. and all the people

  656. have come in

  657. that he wants

  658. to come in.

  659. But you know what?

  660. We chase after

  661. our illusions

  662. like financial security

  663. which no matter

  664. how much money

  665. you have

  666. you never have enough.

  667. If you're young

  668. you believe

  669. you're invincible.

  670. If you're getting older

  671. you put on

  672. anti-wrinkle cream

  673. so you don't see

  674. that the tide of death

  675. is washing away.

  676. Right?

  677. Culture tells us

  678. these are real

  679. but the reality is

  680. death and decay

  681. will come to

  682. every single one

  683. of us in this room.

  684. You know

  685. you go into

  686. the doctor's office

  687. and they say

  688. it's cancer.

  689. And you know

  690. the people I meet

  691. so often

  692. who've lived

  693. so long

  694. with no regard

  695. for God

  696. and then they're

  697. facing the death

  698. of a loved one

  699. and they say to me

  700. oh God will let them

  701. into heaven

  702. won't he?

  703. Because right at that

  704. moment it's not

  705. intangible

  706. it's not distant

  707. it's very real.

  708. But if your hope

  709. is only in a sandcastle

  710. man

  711. when you're facing death

  712. everything gets

  713. washed away

  714. and all you're

  715. left with

  716. is an empty beach

  717. but if Christ

  718. is the hope

  719. of your heart

  720. everything

  721. every little comfort

  722. that God gives you

  723. every blessing

  724. you get right now

  725. is just a glimpse

  726. of that heavenly host

  727. that heavenly home

  728. that he'll give you

  729. that imperishable castle

  730. because there's one thing

  731. that death

  732. cannot take away

  733. from you.

  734. One thing

  735. that lasts

  736. and that's a resurrected

  737. savior

  738. who has defeated death

  739. he has risen again

  740. and he's the guarantee

  741. if we turn

  742. and repent

  743. and place our hopes

  744. not in his little things

  745. of our lives

  746. that we're trying

  747. to chase after

  748. the holidays

  749. the work

  750. the opportunities

  751. but if we trust

  752. and hope in him

  753. we will experience

  754. that living hope.

  755. that's why we pray

  756. Maranatha

  757. Lord come back

  758. we want you

  759. because we want you

  760. to restore things.

  761. We're a different

  762. kind of people

  763. we have a different

  764. kind of hope

  765. from the society

  766. around us.

  767. Third thing

  768. we have a different

  769. view of trials

  770. and suffering.

  771. You see

  772. between the time

  773. when we have been

  774. born again

  775. to this new life

  776. and we see

  777. that final day

  778. when Jesus

  779. comes back

  780. and restores

  781. everything

  782. there's this kind

  783. of in between period

  784. the now

  785. and not yet

  786. where we have

  787. the blessings

  788. of life

  789. and yet we're

  790. waiting for God

  791. to change

  792. and bring everything

  793. new into our lives

  794. and he says

  795. in Peter

  796. he says this

  797. in this you rejoice

  798. though now

  799. for a little while

  800. he calls this time

  801. a little while

  802. if necessary

  803. you have been

  804. grieved

  805. by various trials

  806. he says

  807. a little while

  808. for now

  809. for a little while

  810. you have trials

  811. and you know

  812. if some of you

  813. are going through trials

  814. does it feel like

  815. a little while

  816. oh they sometimes

  817. feel like it's

  818. such a long time

  819. that you go

  820. through trials

  821. Paul calls them

  822. light and momentary

  823. and we don't feel that

  824. but actually

  825. in the light of eternity

  826. they are

  827. just minuscule

  828. compared to

  829. forever

  830. that is coming

  831. and he says

  832. if necessary

  833. so that means

  834. it's not all the time

  835. that there are trials

  836. there are periods

  837. where we enjoy blessing

  838. but he says

  839. you've been grieved

  840. you know

  841. he says

  842. there is a reality

  843. of the pain

  844. some of you

  845. right now

  846. are experiencing

  847. the grief

  848. in your families

  849. the grief

  850. in your

  851. in just the circumstances

  852. of life

  853. you know

  854. that pain

  855. and he says

  856. there are various trials

  857. and you know

  858. various

  859. the word can be translated

  860. multi-colored trials

  861. there's not just one kind of trial

  862. you know

  863. it's like

  864. amber rain

  865. to black rain

  866. you know

  867. T1 to T10

  868. okay

  869. there's a whole spectrum

  870. of trials

  871. and what is a trial

  872. in Peter's mind

  873. he's thinking of the persecution

  874. that comes upon Christians

  875. living in a pagan world

  876. the challenges

  877. of holding firm

  878. to Christ

  879. but

  880. he also knows

  881. that as God's

  882. different people

  883. anything

  884. which

  885. which we have

  886. which tests

  887. our faith

  888. in Christ

  889. because he calls

  890. that we are set apart

  891. for obedience

  892. to Jesus

  893. anything that tests

  894. your faith

  895. and your trust

  896. in Jesus

  897. is a trial

  898. are you struggling

  899. with health

  900. right now

  901. that's a trial

  902. are you wrestling

  903. with your kids

  904. that's a trial

  905. are you just

  906. so frustrated

  907. out of your mind

  908. because Expedia

  909. have failed to set

  910. to a refund matter

  911. which has been going on

  912. for over four months

  913. like me

  914. that's a trial

  915. are you staying single

  916. and struggling

  917. that's a trial

  918. are you trying to find

  919. your identity

  920. in Jesus

  921. but all around you

  922. everyone's just

  923. performance oriented

  924. and you're trying

  925. to hold on to him

  926. that's a trial

  927. why does God

  928. give us trials

  929. sometimes we think

  930. it's God's punishing

  931. us

  932. but our culture

  933. tells us

  934. well if God

  935. really loves us

  936. he'd fix everything

  937. right now

  938. when God has said

  939. right now

  940. is not where

  941. I'm fixing everything

  942. your exiles

  943. your foreigners

  944. I will return

  945. and I'll fix things

  946. but he says

  947. why do I give it

  948. to you so that

  949. the tested

  950. genuineness

  951. of your faith

  952. more precious

  953. than gold

  954. that perishes

  955. though it is

  956. tested by fire

  957. may be found

  958. to result

  959. in praise

  960. glory

  961. and honor

  962. at the revelation

  963. of Jesus

  964. what he's saying

  965. is whatever trial

  966. you're going through

  967. right in your life

  968. right now

  969. one reason God's

  970. bringing it

  971. is so that you

  972. will long

  973. for Jesus

  974. to return

  975. is so that you'll

  976. realize that now

  977. is not

  978. that new creation

  979. salvation

  980. because he wants

  981. to show you

  982. that trials

  983. are God's gift

  984. to you

  985. to wake you up

  986. from chasing

  987. after sandcastles

  988. which are going

  989. to just fade away

  990. so that you'll see

  991. that your hope

  992. is not placed

  993. in just the praise

  994. and the glory

  995. and honor of people

  996. right now

  997. but you long

  998. for that time

  999. when he will be

  1000. honored

  1001. and he will be

  1002. glorified

  1003. and he will be

  1004. praised

  1005. and you will

  1006. bask in the light

  1007. of that

  1008. because you will

  1009. hear Jesus

  1010. say to you

  1011. well done

  1012. good and faithful

  1013. servant

  1014. his praise

  1015. will be to you

  1016. before all

  1017. of the angels

  1018. C.S. Lewis

  1019. said

  1020. pain

  1021. insists upon

  1022. being attended to

  1023. God whispers

  1024. to us

  1025. in our pleasures

  1026. speaks in our

  1027. conscience

  1028. but shouts

  1029. in our pain

  1030. it is his megaphone

  1031. to rouse

  1032. a deaf

  1033. world

  1034. have you ever

  1035. thought about

  1036. your trials

  1037. like that

  1038. that God

  1039. may be trying

  1040. to wake you

  1041. up to long

  1042. for him

  1043. and it's not

  1044. just he's

  1045. longing

  1046. bringing to

  1047. long for him

  1048. he's also

  1049. trials

  1050. are like

  1051. fire

  1052. to strengthen

  1053. your faith

  1054. and to burn

  1055. the impurities

  1056. of our lives

  1057. away

  1058. he's trying

  1059. to strip

  1060. away

  1061. the sand

  1062. castles

  1063. in your life

  1064. so that you

  1065. see that the

  1066. only thing

  1067. that is really

  1068. precious

  1069. and lasting

  1070. is Christ

  1071. because you

  1072. know even a

  1073. gold sand

  1074. castle

  1075. will get

  1076. washed

  1077. away

  1078. but your

  1079. faith

  1080. looking to

  1081. your savior

  1082. to be your

  1083. holy hope

  1084. he will stand

  1085. because he

  1086. rules over

  1087. everything

  1088. do you know

  1089. if you want

  1090. to increase

  1091. your muscles

  1092. do you

  1093. increase

  1094. them

  1095. by sitting

  1096. on the

  1097. sofa

  1098. what do

  1099. you need

  1100. you need

  1101. weights

  1102. every

  1103. Wednesday

  1104. morning

  1105. at 7am

  1106. I joined

  1107. 30 to

  1108. 60 people

  1109. who put

  1110. their body

  1111. through

  1112. suffering

  1113. of a

  1114. HIIT

  1115. workout

  1116. for the

  1117. prize

  1118. of fit

  1119. healthy

  1120. bodies

  1121. that's

  1122. their

  1123. sand

  1124. castle

  1125. and they're

  1126. willing

  1127. to suffer

  1128. for it

  1129. but you

  1130. see if

  1131. Jesus

  1132. is our

  1133. prize

  1134. and wanting

  1135. him more

  1136. than anything

  1137. else

  1138. then the

  1139. trials of

  1140. life are

  1141. an opportunity

  1142. for us to be

  1143. strengthened in

  1144. our faith

  1145. so that we

  1146. see him

  1147. and are

  1148. refined by

  1149. him so that

  1150. he becomes

  1151. more precious

  1152. than all the

  1153. other things

  1154. because everything

  1155. else can be

  1156. fading

  1157. but Jesus

  1158. will never

  1159. fade

  1160. and what

  1161. that doesn't

  1162. mean is

  1163. that if

  1164. anyone's

  1165. going through

  1166. suffering

  1167. we just

  1168. go to

  1169. them

  1170. hey

  1171. trials are

  1172. good

  1173. suck it

  1174. up

  1175. that's

  1176. not what

  1177. he's saying

  1178. it's not

  1179. the trial

  1180. in itself

  1181. but it's

  1182. what God

  1183. is doing

  1184. through the

  1185. trial

  1186. that is

  1187. the beautiful

  1188. thing

  1189. you know

  1190. Jesus

  1191. wants

  1192. for us

  1193. to see

  1194. that there

  1195. is nothing

  1196. more precious

  1197. than himself

  1198. so many

  1199. other things

  1200. blind us

  1201. to that

  1202. and what

  1203. we need

  1204. to see

  1205. is that

  1206. the real

  1207. deal

  1208. is coming

  1209. but today

  1210. we only

  1211. get a glimpse

  1212. in the

  1213. blessings

  1214. we see

  1215. of what

  1216. he's calling

  1217. us to

  1218. you know

  1219. if you're

  1220. sick

  1221. today

  1222. let me

  1223. just kind

  1224. of apply

  1225. this into

  1226. sickness

  1227. if you're

  1228. sick

  1229. today

  1230. I believe

  1231. God wants

  1232. to bring

  1233. healing

  1234. into your

  1235. life

  1236. we want

  1237. to pray

  1238. for healing

  1239. for you

  1240. you know

  1241. I heard

  1242. just last

  1243. week

  1244. one of the

  1245. congregation

  1246. was telling

  1247. me

  1248. last year

  1249. someone

  1250. they'd been

  1251. struggling

  1252. for gout

  1253. for a long

  1254. time

  1255. and then

  1256. someone

  1257. just prayed

  1258. for them

  1259. and it

  1260. just

  1261. disappeared

  1262. went

  1263. gone

  1264. it's never

  1265. come back

  1266. in the last

  1267. year

  1268. God has

  1269. the power

  1270. to give

  1271. you a glimpse

  1272. of the new

  1273. creation

  1274. that he's

  1275. bringing in

  1276. right now

  1277. right today

  1278. in healing

  1279. and so

  1280. we want

  1281. to pray

  1282. for you

  1283. today

  1284. that God

  1285. would do

  1286. that in

  1287. your life

  1288. but

  1289. if God

  1290. heals you

  1291. today

  1292. you're still

  1293. going to

  1294. die

  1295. I'm sorry

  1296. that's the

  1297. truth

  1298. right

  1299. you're still

  1300. going to

  1301. die

  1302. and so

  1303. your healing

  1304. now is a

  1305. secondary hope

  1306. it's not an

  1307. ultimate hope

  1308. so you

  1309. hold your

  1310. healing

  1311. with open

  1312. hands

  1313. saying

  1314. God

  1315. I just

  1316. trust

  1317. you

  1318. and you

  1319. see

  1320. if he

  1321. doesn't

  1322. heal

  1323. you

  1324. today

  1325. then his

  1326. guarantee

  1327. is he

  1328. will

  1329. heal you

  1330. maybe

  1331. tomorrow

  1332. or maybe

  1333. when he

  1334. returns

  1335. but until

  1336. then

  1337. we wait

  1338. longing

  1339. for him

  1340. more

  1341. than even

  1342. I want

  1343. my healing

  1344. because what

  1345. he's trying

  1346. to do

  1347. is he's

  1348. trying to

  1349. change us

  1350. to be a

  1351. different kind

  1352. of people

  1353. who have a

  1354. different kind

  1355. of hope

  1356. who see

  1357. that through

  1358. the trials

  1359. God is

  1360. refining

  1361. and changing

  1362. us

  1363. last thing

  1364. to give us

  1365. a different

  1366. joy

  1367. he says

  1368. though you

  1369. have not

  1370. seen him

  1371. you love

  1372. him

  1373. though you

  1374. do not

  1375. see him

  1376. now

  1377. you believe

  1378. in him

  1379. and rejoice

  1380. with joy

  1381. that is

  1382. inexpressible

  1383. and filled

  1384. with glory

  1385. obtaining

  1386. the outcome

  1387. of your

  1388. faith

  1389. the salvation

  1390. of your

  1391. souls

  1392. our culture

  1393. tells us

  1394. do what

  1395. makes you

  1396. happy

  1397. chase after

  1398. it

  1399. in whatever

  1400. number of

  1401. ways you

  1402. can

  1403. in relationships

  1404. in sex

  1405. in so many

  1406. ways

  1407. and then you

  1408. look at all

  1409. the number

  1410. of depressing

  1411. songs we

  1412. have about

  1413. relationship

  1414. breakup

  1415. and you

  1416. just wonder

  1417. is that

  1418. where joy

  1419. is found

  1420. but if you

  1421. want to be

  1422. truly joyful

  1423. you've got to

  1424. look to

  1425. something

  1426. or someone

  1427. outside of

  1428. this

  1429. perishable

  1430. world

  1431. for true

  1432. joy

  1433. that no

  1434. matter what

  1435. you're going

  1436. through

  1437. nothing can

  1438. take away

  1439. Peter says

  1440. gospel hope

  1441. changes today

  1442. because in the

  1443. midst of your

  1444. trials

  1445. it can bring

  1446. you a deep

  1447. love and joy

  1448. in Jesus

  1449. and many of us

  1450. if you've been

  1451. through trials

  1452. you know

  1453. it has brought

  1454. you so much

  1455. closer to Jesus

  1456. and by joy

  1457. he doesn't mean

  1458. just feeling

  1459. happy because

  1460. that kind of

  1461. comes and

  1462. goes

  1463. because some

  1464. of you

  1465. know the

  1466. real sense

  1467. of grief

  1468. there is

  1469. but he

  1470. means a

  1471. deep

  1472. seated

  1473. confident

  1474. peace

  1475. regardless

  1476. of what

  1477. turmoil

  1478. or blessings

  1479. you're going

  1480. through right

  1481. now

  1482. do you

  1483. have that

  1484. do you

  1485. have that

  1486. confidence

  1487. right now

  1488. in him

  1489. because that

  1490. joy comes

  1491. from tasting

  1492. the goodness

  1493. and mercy

  1494. of Jesus

  1495. verse 3

  1496. to 12

  1497. says

  1498. in fact

  1499. verse 3

  1500. to 12

  1501. are all

  1502. one sentence

  1503. about hope

  1504. and suffering

  1505. but they're a

  1506. song of praise

  1507. because he says

  1508. blessed be the

  1509. God

  1510. of father

  1511. of our

  1512. Lord Jesus

  1513. Christ

  1514. according to

  1515. his mercy

  1516. he has caused

  1517. you if you're

  1518. a believer

  1519. to be born

  1520. again

  1521. and you know

  1522. Peter

  1523. knows all

  1524. about this

  1525. mercy

  1526. of God

  1527. because you

  1528. know

  1529. he was

  1530. grieved

  1531. by his

  1532. own sin

  1533. his trial

  1534. before

  1535. before the

  1536. girl

  1537. and when he

  1538. denies Jesus

  1539. he failed

  1540. the trial

  1541. God gave him

  1542. where his

  1543. faith was

  1544. tested

  1545. and in

  1546. bitterness

  1547. he repents

  1548. before

  1549. he repents

  1550. of what

  1551. he's done

  1552. and when

  1553. Jesus rose

  1554. again

  1555. and they

  1556. were having

  1557. and Jesus

  1558. appears to

  1559. them by

  1560. the lake

  1561. do you

  1562. know what

  1563. do you

  1564. know who

  1565. the first

  1566. person who

  1567. wants to

  1568. run and

  1569. meet you

  1570. Jesus

  1571. is

  1572. it's

  1573. Peter

  1574. because

  1575. Peter

  1576. knows

  1577. the

  1578. forgiveness

  1579. and mercy

  1580. of Jesus

  1581. if you

  1582. know

  1583. and let

  1584. me just

  1585. just want

  1586. to close

  1587. with this

  1588. I used

  1589. to have

  1590. a really

  1591. sweet tooth

  1592. after being

  1593. in Hong

  1594. Kong

  1595. I stopped

  1596. eating

  1597. sweet things

  1598. so much

  1599. and my

  1600. taste buds

  1601. have changed

  1602. if I

  1603. eat sweet

  1604. things

  1605. I no

  1606. longer

  1607. they're

  1608. too sweet

  1609. for me

  1610. when I

  1611. heard

  1612. John Piper

  1613. talking about

  1614. the return

  1615. of Jesus

  1616. and he

  1617. once said

  1618. sinlessness

  1619. I can

  1620. I can

  1621. almost

  1622. taste it

  1623. and I

  1624. went

  1625. wow

  1626. that's a

  1627. man

  1628. who's had

  1629. a diet

  1630. so filled

  1631. of the

  1632. gospel of

  1633. Jesus

  1634. that his

  1635. taste buds

  1636. have been

  1637. changed to be

  1638. like him

  1639. to want and

  1640. desire him

  1641. and to want to

  1642. live fully honoring

  1643. to him in his

  1644. life

  1645. and my taste buds

  1646. are filled with

  1647. that holiday

  1648. I can

  1649. almost

  1650. taste it

  1651. financial

  1652. security

  1653. I can

  1654. almost

  1655. taste it

  1656. comfortable

  1657. life

  1658. I can

  1659. almost

  1660. taste it

  1661. because the

  1662. diet of our

  1663. thoughts are so

  1664. focused on

  1665. me and on

  1666. getting comfort

  1667. on getting just

  1668. the things that I

  1669. want

  1670. anyone like me

  1671. I think as a

  1672. church

  1673. Peter is calling

  1674. us

  1675. he wants us

  1676. to get a

  1677. taste

  1678. of Jesus

  1679. and how

  1680. precious he

  1681. is and even

  1682. if you're going

  1683. through the

  1684. trials

  1685. he wants you

  1686. to see that

  1687. tasting Jesus

  1688. is better than

  1689. anything else

  1690. you want to

  1691. taste

  1692. that's why we

  1693. read scripture

  1694. that's why we

  1695. sing

  1696. that's why we

  1697. repent

  1698. that's why we

  1699. have CGs

  1700. to encourage

  1701. each other

  1702. because it's

  1703. all for our

  1704. joy right

  1705. now

  1706. have you ever

  1707. thought that the

  1708. trials God may

  1709. be bringing to

  1710. you right now

  1711. are God's

  1712. mercy to you

  1713. to show you

  1714. that he is

  1715. more precious

  1716. than anything

  1717. else that may

  1718. be fading

  1719. anything else

  1720. that you may

  1721. be chasing

  1722. after right

  1723. now

  1724. let's pray

  1725. I want you

  1726. just to stop

  1727. and think

  1728. about

  1729. what is it

  1730. in your life

  1731. right now

  1732. that you

  1733. you're actually

  1734. putting your

  1735. hope in

  1736. what are your

  1737. taste buds

  1738. filled with

  1739. what are your

  1740. thought life

  1741. filled with

  1742. what are your

  1743. plans filled

  1744. with

  1745. how much

  1746. you filled

  1747. with the

  1748. beauty of a

  1749. savior

  1750. who even

  1751. though we

  1752. live in a

  1753. broken world

  1754. where we

  1755. chase after

  1756. our own

  1757. comforts

  1758. and the

  1759. things of

  1760. this life

  1761. and we

  1762. neglect so

  1763. many other

  1764. people and

  1765. so many

  1766. other things

  1767. and yet God

  1768. comes to us

  1769. and says

  1770. I want to

  1771. bring you

  1772. my mercy

  1773. I want to

  1774. bring you

  1775. my forgiveness

  1776. I want to

  1777. show you

  1778. mercy right

  1779. now

  1780. that it's

  1781. mercy that

  1782. you have a

  1783. hope

  1784. that at the

  1785. end of your

  1786. life you will

  1787. have something

  1788. worth living

  1789. for if you

  1790. trust in

  1791. Jesus

  1792. that there will

  1793. be something

  1794. that lasts

  1795. if you trust

  1796. in Jesus

  1797. and it's only

  1798. the mercy of

  1799. God that

  1800. brings it

  1801. Father we

  1802. just pray

  1803. that as a

  1804. church you'd

  1805. help us not

  1806. to make here

  1807. our home

  1808. let us enjoy

  1809. the good things

  1810. you give us

  1811. but only as a

  1812. glimpse

  1813. that when our

  1814. washing machines

  1815. break

  1816. when we face

  1817. sickness and

  1818. trials

  1819. when we

  1820. struggle

  1821. that you are

  1822. giving us

  1823. mercy to want

  1824. us to fix

  1825. our eyes on

  1826. you and to

  1827. place our

  1828. hope in you

  1829. strengthen our

  1830. faith

  1831. open our eyes

  1832. to see how

  1833. beautiful you

  1834. are

  1835. in Jesus

  1836. name

  1837. Amen

  1838. Jesus

  1839. and

  1840. can

  1841. earn

  1842. who

  1843. can

  1844. help

  1845. her

  1846. Christ

  1847. Lord

  1848. look at

  1849. some

  1850. feet

  1851. in the

  1852. Defense

  1853. of the

  1854. atable

  1855. how

  1856. life

  1857. do

  1858. Gina

  1859. behold

  1860. can

  1861. hug

  1862. what
