  1. Father, we ask that you would gently but deeply pour out the Holy Spirit upon us at this time.

  2. Father, your word reveals things which are hard for us, and we confess before you, Father,

  3. that we want to try to solve these things by our own categories and in our own way

  4. and in our own strength and not just listen to your word and believe it and to trust it

  5. and to have it bear fruit in our lives.

  6. So, Father, we ask for a deep work of your Holy Spirit in our lives as we open your word.

  7. And, Father, we want to lift Jesus high this morning here, and we want to lift him high in our daily lives.

  8. We want to lift him high in this city, and we want to lift him high to the ends of the earth.

  9. So, Father, please be gracious and kind.

  10. Pour out your Holy Spirit.

  11. In Jesus' name we pray.

  12. Amen.

  13. Please be seated.

  14. So, occasionally I do this with a sermon.

  15. I give a bit of a warning.

  16. I guess I should maybe have had a bit of an R symbol up there because it's a bit of a restricted sermon,

  17. not because I'm going to talk about sexual stuff, but I'm going to talk about the devil.

  18. So, if you're a guest here this morning or you've been here for a while and you're a bit of a seeker,

  19. I just want to let you know we're going to talk about the devil because it's sort of in the scripture text.

  20. And I know that when I say in Canada that we're going to talk about the devil,

  21. there's sort of nowadays there's sort of two types of reactions.

  22. For many Canadians to say that I'm going to talk about the devil,

  23. I have just revealed that I am an anti-intellectual kook.

  24. I've just revealed that to you folks.

  25. For many Canadians, that's what it would be.

  26. The eyes would roll.

  27. They'd go, oh, good grief.

  28. And for others, increasing numbers, maybe even the majority of Canadians,

  29. they'd say, well, that's interesting.

  30. I wonder what he has to say.

  31. I wonder if it fits in with how I understand demons and devils to work.

  32. So, wherever you are, that's what we're going to look at today amongst other things.

  33. Of course, it's not the main thing in the text, but it's a big part of the text.

  34. It's a bit of an iceberg or an elephant in the text, and we're going to look at it.

  35. We're not going to avoid it.

  36. So, if you have your Bibles, let's see.

  37. I mean, it doesn't jump right into talking about the devil right away, but it's going to get there.

  38. So, if you have your Bibles, turn in them to John 8, verse 31.

    John 8:31

  39. John 8, verse 31.

    John 8:31

  40. And here's how...

  41. Remember, when I was introducing this text before I read it, I said,

  42. this is part of a longer conversation of Jesus.

  43. And so, some of the things that are in the text, we sort of talked about last week,

  44. but John 8, verse 31, here's how it goes.

    John 8:31

  45. So, Jesus said to the Jews, it's both the leaders and the people who had believed him.

  46. And notice, by the way, it says believed him, not believed in him, but believed him.

  47. They've started to believe some of the things he's said,

  48. but they haven't quite reached the point of having a trust in him.

  49. It's all the way through John's Gospel.

  50. It's a very subtle difference, but it's a very important difference.

  51. Since I've introduced the topic of demons in another place in the Bible,

  52. it says, Jesus says, the demons believe in God and tremble.

  53. They don't have a saving belief, but they have a knowledge.

  54. So, this is the way here it's been referred to.

  55. There's some knowledge that what Jesus is saying is true.

  56. So, I'll read it again, verse 31.

  57. So, Jesus said to the Jewish people who had believed him,

  58. if you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples,

  59. and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

  60. And we're just going to camp there just for a few seconds.

  61. Andrew, if you could put that up on the screen.

  62. It's a really important verse.

  63. It's one of those verses that Christians should try to memorize if they possibly can.

  64. In a very interesting way, by memorizing the scripture,

  65. you're abiding and continuing in the word, right?

  66. It's also part of how you just meditate upon the word

  67. and have it try to come into your life.

  68. Some of your versions will say not abide, but continue.

  69. And both are very good words to translate the original idea in the original language.

  70. Abide sort of means to live there.

  71. Continue means also has that same type of idea that you listen,

  72. and then you continue to listen and continue to have it to have some type of role in your life.

  73. Well worth memorizing.

  74. And so, once again, I'm going in and out.

  75. Is that just my imagination?

  76. Imagination?

  77. Nope, it's not my imagination.

  78. Anyway, so it's a very, very powerful, wonderful verse.

  79. We're going to return to it at the end, but just in case I lose you, put you all to sleep.

  80. This is a very, very, very powerful set of four ideas that are all linked in the scripture.

  81. And you need to have all four of them to have any part of it work.

  82. So there's this first thing that Jesus says, you need to abide in my word.

  83. And if you abide in my word, if you continue in my word, then you are truly my disciples.

  84. And his word here is opening the door to a far bigger thing.

  85. The historic understanding of Christians is that when we read the New Testament,

  86. we're reading ultimately the apostolic testimony to what Jesus said.

  87. And Jesus is in chapter 7 said how when you listen to the Old Testament, you're listening to the Father speak.

  88. So it's not only Jesus talking about the gospel that you have to believe and be gripped by the gospel,

  89. but you have to be gripped by the gospel, the message that God has sent his son.

  90. And how does he put it in John chapter 3, verse 16?

    John 3:16

  91. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son to the end that all who believe in him will not perish,

  92. but have eternal life.

  93. And so it's not only the message of the gospel, but the writings of the New Testament

  94. that we are to abide in and continue.

  95. And if we do that, we truly are his disciples,

  96. truly are ones who have been saved by him and are following him.

  97. And then what's the next linked idea?

  98. If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples.

  99. And what will happen?

  100. You will know the truth.

  101. You will know the truth.

  102. You won't know lies.

  103. You won't know ambiguity.

  104. You won't know illusion.

  105. You will know the truth.

  106. You will be delivered from lies.

  107. And illusions.

  108. And delusions.

  109. To know the truth.

  110. That's God's desire for human beings.

  111. Is that we know the truth.

  112. Not only the truth about God, but the truth.

  113. That's his heart.

  114. That's his desire.

  115. That's one of the implications of the gospel.

  116. One of the implications of the gospel is that as it grips you,

  117. and as you now, in light of the gospel, continue in the word,

  118. that that basic creational purpose that God has always had for us,

  119. to know the truth, that that will happen.

  120. And part of how we will, one of the consequences of abiding in the word,

  121. and being the disciple of Jesus,

  122. and knowing the truth,

  123. is that the truth will make us free.

  124. Drugs don't make us free.

  125. Getting drunk doesn't make us free.

  126. Lies don't make us free.

  127. I mean, we might sort of think that they sort of get us out of some trouble,

  128. but lies ultimately always damage and hurt us.

  129. Illusion doesn't make, delusion doesn't,

  130. the truth will set you free.

  131. That's his powerful statement of Jesus.

  132. So even if you now fall asleep,

  133. I lose you for the next 30 minutes,

  134. hopefully that will grip you,

  135. and you'll want to memorize the scripture.

  136. But here's the problem.

  137. If we're honest, and all of a sudden now,

  138. because, you know, it's,

  139. we live in Canada,

  140. unless you're a guest here this morning from another country,

  141. if so, we're really glad you came to join us.

  142. But if we breathe the cultural air of Canada,

  143. and in Canada,

  144. well, Andrew, could you put up the next slide?

  145. I'm not sure what it's going to look like,

  146. because I gave Andrew some options.

  147. In Canada,

  148. we've taken part of Jesus' words

  149. and cut out the rest.

  150. This is a very Canadian statement.

  151. Know the truth,

  152. and the truth will set you free.

  153. Isn't that like a very, very Canadian statement?

  154. Jesus says,

  155. if you abide in my word,

  156. if you abide in my word,

  157. you are truly my disciples,

  158. and you will know the truth,

  159. and the truth will set you free.

  160. But in Canada,

  161. we've gotten rid of

  162. abiding,

  163. abiding in the word,

  164. being a disciple of Jesus.

  165. And we've taken all of that part out of the scripture,

  166. and in some ways,

  167. this is a bit of a motto for the average Canadian.

  168. Know the truth,

  169. and the truth will set you free.

  170. Which means then,

  171. for the average Canadian,

  172. why do you need to add Jesus to the equation?

  173. Like,

  174. know the truth,

  175. and the truth will set you free.

  176. I mean,

  177. that's why we buy the self-help books,

  178. isn't it?

  179. That's,

  180. that's,

  181. why,

  182. that's just basically,

  183. it's like,

  184. it's so,

  185. in some ways,

  186. part of the history of Canadian culture

  187. is that shift.

  188. It's actually,

  189. what if just,

  190. it's the enlightenment here.

  191. Sorry,

  192. a little bit of an intellectual geek moment.

  193. Sorry,

  194. time out.

  195. Intellectual geek moment.

  196. The switch,

  197. from what Jesus said to that,

  198. is the beginning of the enlightenment.

  199. It's the enlightenment project.

  200. That's what it is.

  201. And,

  202. and so,

  203. for the average Canadian,

  204. they say,

  205. one moment,

  206. you just know the truth,

  207. and the truth will set you free.

  208. How on earth does knowing Jesus

  209. add anything to that project whatsoever?

  210. In fact,

  211. for the average Canadian,

  212. the average Canadian,

  213. they'd say,

  214. in fact,

  215. actually moving towards,

  216. what Jesus actually said,

  217. about abiding in the Bible,

  218. and,

  219. and actually being a follower of Jesus,

  220. that actually is a movement away from knowing the truth.

  221. It's a movement away from freedom.

  222. That's the cultural area we live in.

  223. Knowing Jesus only messes this project up,

  224. which is deeply ingrained in us.

  225. So,

  226. what do we do?

  227. Well,

  228. it's very,

  229. very interesting.

  230. interesting.

  231. The,

  232. the Bible is actually going to deal with this.

  233. Believe it or not,

  234. how Jesus talks about this afterwards,

  235. it's,

  236. it's one of the many ways that I really believe that the Bible is inspired,

  237. because,

  238. the,

  239. the words are just slightly different,

  240. but Jesus in the conversation anticipates the problem.

  241. But before we get,

  242. to what Jesus says,

  243. I just want to throw out a bit of a challenge to us.

  244. So,

  245. for the average Canadian,

  246. this is true.

  247. Know the truth and we'll set,

  248. and the truth will set you free.

  249. And the question to Canada is,

  250. how's that working for us?

  251. Like,

  252. how's that working?

  253. Like,

  254. just,

  255. just be real for a second.

  256. When you look at Canada right now,

  257. do you think Canadians generally,

  258. because this is what they believe,

  259. do you think there's a lot more freedom in Canada now than there used to be?

  260. Do you think that in Canada,

  261. more and more people are able to think well?

  262. Do you think in Canada there are fewer lies that people believe?

  263. Do you think in Canada that people generally are highly motivated by knowing what's true and real?

  264. Like,

  265. how's that going in Canada right now?

  266. Is it going so well that we can say that maybe you don't need what Jesus said,

  267. but you just need to listen to that?

  268. Let's just be honest for a second.

  269. It's not really going very well,

  270. is it?

  271. I mean,

  272. who reads Twitter for the truth?

  273. Maybe you have been.

  274. Sorry.

  275. But,

  276. it's a bad place to get the truth.

  277. It's good to get yelling.

  278. And innuendo.

  279. And people having their feelings hurt.

  280. In fact,

  281. actually,

  282. you know,

  283. for many Canadians now,

  284. it's actually more from know the truth,

  285. and the truth will set you free,

  286. is to know your feelings,

  287. and your feelings will set you free.

  288. And that's working even worse than knowing the truth.

  289. Now,

  290. some of you might say,

  291. okay,

  292. George,

  293. well,

  294. that's actually a very,

  295. very clever point you just made,

  296. but I'm going to push it right back at you.

  297. George,

  298. how on earth can what Jesus said,

  299. if you abide in my word,

  300. you are truly my disciples,

  301. and you will know the truth,

  302. and the truth will set you free?

  303. Like,

  304. George,

  305. how dare you get up there and say that,

  306. that that's somehow a better thing.

  307. George,

  308. I mean,

  309. you know,

  310. George,

  311. you're going to be going to a conference at Southern Seminary in a couple of weeks,

  312. sort of a continuing ed thing.

  313. George,

  314. Southern Seminary,

  315. great place of learning,

  316. but you know what,

  317. that was segregated.

  318. It was racist up until just a few decades ago.

  319. Like,

  320. what about apartheid?

  321. All those good reformed Christians in South Africa,

  322. practicing apartheid.

  323. What about Christians in slavery?

  324. What about just,

  325. George,

  326. okay,

  327. yeah,

  328. yeah,

  329. so maybe the project's not going very well in Canada,

  330. but George,

  331. given Christianity's terrible history connected to racism,

  332. and apartheid,

  333. like,

  334. how is that any better?

  335. Now,

  336. by the way,

  337. that's a really good question for a non-Christian to ask us.

  338. That's a completely and utterly fair question.

  339. It might not be a question we feel comfortable with,

  340. but it's a great question.

  341. And here,

  342. by the way,

  343. because as you know,

  344. I have notes here,

  345. but a lot of times I don't look at them.

  346. If I forget to come back and answer the question,

  347. please shout at me and say,

  348. George,

  349. you didn't answer the question,

  350. because we are.

  351. So let's look at the Bible.

  352. Actually,

  353. what Jesus says

  354. is very,

  355. very contemporary.

  356. He's going to address these issues.

  357. So if you,

  358. if you turn in your Bibles,

  359. get your Bibles back open.

  360. John chapter eight,

  361. verse 31.

  362. I'll read it again,

  363. and we'll see what happens next.

  364. So Jesus said to the Jewish people who had believed him,

  365. if you abide in my word,

  366. you are truly my disciples,

  367. and you will know the truth,

  368. and the truth will set you free.

  369. They answered him,

  370. we are offspring of Abraham

  371. and have never been enslaved to anyone.

  372. How is it that you say

  373. you will become free?

  374. All you need to change in that is

  375. we are Canadians.

  376. We are Canadians.

  377. We've never been enslaved by anyone.

  378. How on earth can you say

  379. that

  380. you will become free?

  381. And Jesus answered them,

  382. and here's the first thing.

  383. We're going to camp in this

  384. for just a couple of minutes,

  385. but here's,

  386. see,

  387. Jesus is going to say

  388. that this enlightenment project

  389. that most Canadians believe in

  390. completely and utterly ignores

  391. two important realities.

  392. That if you don't understand

  393. these two important realities,

  394. that's why this doesn't work.

  395. And why what Jesus says

  396. will work.

  397. And the first is right here in verse 34.

  398. Jesus answered them,

  399. truly, truly,

  400. I say to you,

  401. everyone who practices sin

  402. is a slave to sin.

  403. What this

  404. doesn't take into account of

  405. is sin.

  406. Human sin.

  407. You see,

  408. in the enlightenment project,

  409. in what most Canadians think of,

  410. they think that all we need to do

  411. to sort of fix this

  412. is,

  413. the problem is we're finite.

  414. And so what we need to fix,

  415. how we need to fix this

  416. is we just need to have

  417. a bit better philosophy.

  418. We need,

  419. and in particular,

  420. we need better technology.

  421. You know,

  422. like maybe what we need

  423. to know the truth more

  424. is to have something

  425. that you can just carry around

  426. in your hand

  427. that will access virtually

  428. all of the knowledge

  429. on the planet

  430. because that one,

  431. one moment,

  432. that doesn't work at all

  433. right now,

  434. does it?

  435. Like,

  436. in fact,

  437. actually,

  438. that's made it worse,

  439. hasn't it?

  440. I mean,

  441. if you're honest with it,

  442. right?

  443. The internet hasn't made us

  444. smarter,

  445. wiser,

  446. more pursuing of truth.

  447. It's made us want to look

  448. at cat videos and porn

  449. and believe the latest rantings

  450. and ravings of people

  451. who are fools.

  452. Right?

  453. I mean,

  454. that's what's happened.

  455. But,

  456. you know,

  457. in our,

  458. for us in Canada,

  459. we're so committed to this,

  460. to making sure that Jesus

  461. has nothing to do with anything.

  462. We think that,

  463. okay,

  464. if the tools are better,

  465. if the technique is better,

  466. if society is just better,

  467. if we elect the right leader,

  468. if we elect a really good

  469. progressive prime minister,

  470. one moment,

  471. how's that going?

  472. Didn't we just do that?

  473. Like,

  474. it's not going very well.

  475. We did it in Ontario.

  476. I mean,

  477. it's not,

  478. it just,

  479. you see,

  480. what Jesus says is

  481. the problem isn't that

  482. we don't have the best tools,

  483. or the best philosophy yet,

  484. or the best social structure.

  485. He says the problem is us.

  486. The problem is that human beings

  487. are bent and fallen.

  488. And when the Bible talks about sin,

  489. by the way,

  490. if you're a guest here,

  491. it's not a,

  492. it's not a code word for sex.

  493. Sex isn't sinful.

  494. I mean,

  495. there's a way that sex is sinful,

  496. sexual knowing and stimulation

  497. is sinful,

  498. but it's not a code word.

  499. It's,

  500. it's referring to Genesis chapter three.

  501. It's,

  502. it's referring to the great lie that,

  503. but before that,

  504. that God had made all things good

  505. for us to,

  506. to know God

  507. and to be known by God

  508. and to be transparent

  509. and to,

  510. and to live in our home

  511. and to develop the home

  512. and to make the whole,

  513. the whole earth

  514. like a beautiful garden

  515. and,

  516. and have God provide

  517. all of our needs.

  518. But instead of that,

  519. we chose to not believe God

  520. and to,

  521. in fact,

  522. to say that,

  523. that God,

  524. I don't believe any of,

  525. I don't believe what you're saying

  526. is true

  527. and I don't trust you.

  528. And I want to be God.

  529. I want to be just as much

  530. a God as,

  531. as you.

  532. And I want to become the center

  533. and I want to be in control.

  534. And in that fundamental break

  535. to be like God

  536. bent human beings.

  537. And if you read Genesis 3,

  538. the result of it is,

  539. is that human,

  540. all of a sudden,

  541. Adam and Eve

  542. didn't talk each other,

  543. trust each other anymore

  544. and they passed blame

  545. and,

  546. and they hated transparency

  547. and,

  548. and we want to hide.

  549. And the Bible says

  550. that's the human problem.

  551. That's what Jesus says.

  552. That's the problem with,

  553. it's,

  554. it's not,

  555. and,

  556. and God in his common grace

  557. made sure that everything

  558. didn't completely and utterly

  559. fall apart,

  560. but the fall is just present

  561. with us.

  562. Sin is present with us.

  563. And that's why

  564. just merely knowing the truth

  565. and the truth will set you free,

  566. it just doesn't work

  567. because it doesn't deal

  568. with the fact that human beings

  569. are fundamentally bent.

  570. And by the way,

  571. when I say this,

  572. I'm not saying that

  573. those who are Christians

  574. aren't bent and fallen

  575. and non-Christians are.

  576. I'm a fallen human being too.

  577. And by the way,

  578. here when,

  579. when Jesus is saying,

  580. and,

  581. and,

  582. and,

  583. you know,

  584. there's a,

  585. and we're bent in our,

  586. our spirituality

  587. and our religion,

  588. we're bent in our technology,

  589. we're bent in our philosophy,

  590. we're bent in our emotions,

  591. we're bent in our thinking.

  592. So,

  593. now that I've just depressed you all,

  594. well,

  595. Jesus goes on to say something

  596. which gives us hope.

  597. Like,

  598. what is it he says?

  599. Look at verse 35.

  600. He uses a bit of an analogy

  601. about how,

  602. that the analogy sort of works by,

  603. you know,

  604. a slave would say,

  605. I'm a slave in this house.

  606. Whereas a son or a daughter would say,

  607. I live in this house.

  608. Sort of the,

  609. the different,

  610. the very,

  611. very different worldview.

  612. Very different,

  613. they both can inhabit

  614. right beside each other

  615. but their status is different,

  616. how they understand things is different,

  617. their freedom is different,

  618. their power is different,

  619. everything is different.

  620. So,

  621. verse 35,

  622. the slave,

  623. so,

  624. verse 34 again,

  625. truly,

  626. truly,

  627. I say to you,

  628. everyone who practices sin

  629. as a slave to sin,

  630. the slave does not remain

  631. in the house forever.

  632. The son remains forever.

  633. So,

  634. if the son sets you free,

  635. you will be free indeed.

  636. If the son sets you free,

  637. you will be free indeed.

  638. You know,

  639. if,

  640. if the son sets you free,

  641. you will be free indeed.

  642. See,

  643. that's going to start,

  644. point back a little bit

  645. about what it means

  646. to actually believe in Jesus

  647. and to abide in his word

  648. and to follow him

  649. because it is for freedom

  650. that Christ has set us free.

  651. And it's for a freedom

  652. that Christ has set us free

  653. that's true

  654. and in the truth.

  655. that's why he set us free.

  656. Then he says,

  657. in verse 37,

  658. I know that you are

  659. the offspring of Abraham,

  660. yet you seek to kill me.

  661. We talked about that more last week

  662. because my word

  663. finds no place in you.

  664. I speak of what I have seen

  665. with my father

  666. and you do

  667. what you have heard

  668. from your father.

  669. Now,

  670. just sort of pause here.

  671. Those of you who are looking

  672. a little bit ahead,

  673. Jesus is now going to begin

  674. into this second thing.

  675. Remember,

  676. why does know the truth

  677. and the truth will set you free

  678. not work?

  679. The first thing is,

  680. Jesus says,

  681. very wisely

  682. and correctly,

  683. is that we haven't

  684. taken into account

  685. the fact that every human being

  686. has sinned.

  687. And what's the second thing?

  688. The second thing is,

  689. is that the world

  690. hasn't taken into account

  691. that the devil is real

  692. and exists.

  693. Look at what he goes on

  694. to say in verse 39.

  695. They answered him,

  696. Abraham is our father.

  697. In other words,

  698. that's the lineage

  699. that they come from.

  700. And Jesus said to them,

  701. if you were Abraham's children,

  702. you would be doing

  703. the works

  704. that Abraham did.

  705. But now you seek

  706. to kill me,

  707. which is actually

  708. what's happening.

  709. A man who has told you

  710. the truth

  711. that I heard from God.

  712. This is not what Abraham did.

  713. You are doing the works

  714. that you're doing

  715. the works your father did.

  716. They said to him,

  717. we were not born

  718. in sexual immorality.

  719. Probably a little bit

  720. of a dig

  721. that they would have said

  722. that Jesus was born

  723. of sexual immorality.

  724. We have one father,

  725. even God.

  726. Jesus said to them,

  727. if God were your father,

  728. you would love me.

  729. For I came from God

  730. and I am here.

  731. I came not

  732. of my own accord,

  733. but he sent me.

  734. Why do you not

  735. understand what I say?

  736. It is because

  737. you cannot bear my word.

  738. You are of your father,

  739. the devil,

  740. and your will

  741. is to do

  742. your father's desires.

  743. He was a murderer

  744. from the beginning

  745. and does not stand

  746. in the truth

  747. because there is

  748. no truth in him.

  749. When he speaks,

  750. sorry,

  751. when he lies,

  752. he speaks out

  753. of his own character,

  754. for he is a liar

  755. and the father

  756. of lies.

  757. I'm going to read

  758. that verse 44 again.

  759. It's a very,

  760. very powerful verse.

  761. You are of your father,

  762. the devil,

  763. and your will

  764. is to do

  765. your father's desires.

  766. He was a murderer

  767. from the beginning

  768. and does not stand

  769. in the truth

  770. because there is

  771. no truth in him.

  772. When he lies,

  773. he speaks out

  774. of his own character,

  775. for he is a liar

  776. and the father

  777. of lies.

  778. Andrew,

  779. if you could

  780. put the next point

  781. up, please.

  782. The devil desires

  783. you to die

  784. in the unending

  785. grip of lies.

  786. The devil desires

  787. you to die

  788. in the unending

  789. grip of lies.

  790. So,

  791. remember I said

  792. that when I first

  793. introduced this sermon,

  794. I said just a bit

  795. of a warning,

  796. a heads up.

  797. We're going to talk

  798. about the devil

  799. a little bit

  800. this morning.

  801. And for many Canadians,

  802. I've just revealed

  803. myself as an

  804. unintelligent,

  805. unread kook.

  806. And for other Canadians

  807. who sort of

  808. through a variety

  809. of reasons

  810. have come to

  811. basically accept

  812. that there's

  813. a supernatural world

  814. and I'm now

  815. sort of just curious

  816. as to whether

  817. I'm going to talk

  818. about whether

  819. you can have

  820. little boxes

  821. that can capture

  822. demons or something

  823. like that

  824. or what the

  825. right spells are

  826. or the difference

  827. between white

  828. and black magic.

  829. The Bible has

  830. a lot more to say

  831. about the demonic

  832. than this,

  833. but I've disappointed

  834. everyone in Canada

  835. virtually outside

  836. of those who are

  837. disciples of Jesus

  838. with our description

  839. of the devil's work

  840. right now

  841. because this isn't

  842. very sexy,

  843. is it?

  844. It's just

  845. this sense

  846. that the Bible

  847. says is that

  848. the devil,

  849. that every single

  850. human being

  851. has an experience

  852. of the devil

  853. and their experience

  854. of the devil

  855. is when they lie.

  856. And that's not

  857. very sexy.

  858. You see,

  859. part of the thing

  860. that this text

  861. is revealing,

  862. for many Canadians,

  863. we sort of almost

  864. believe that

  865. we live in a

  866. naked public square.

  867. But what I mean

  868. by a naked public

  869. square here

  870. is that

  871. all we see

  872. is what is.

  873. If we don't see it,

  874. it doesn't exist.

  875. And then what we see

  876. is we see stores,

  877. we see buildings,

  878. we see people.

  879. But the Bible

  880. paints a very,

  881. very different

  882. world picture

  883. that there are,

  884. in fact,

  885. angels and demons

  886. and we walk

  887. amidst unseen

  888. beings.

  889. that's what,

  890. in fact,

  891. we walk amongst.

  892. And that the devils,

  893. so to speak,

  894. they whisper in our ears

  895. and to our hearts

  896. and to our minds.

  897. And one of the things

  898. which is sort of shocking

  899. about what Jesus is saying,

  900. he's saying many things

  901. that are shocking,

  902. is that if we do tend

  903. to think that there are

  904. things like devils,

  905. we sort of imagine

  906. ourselves

  907. that there's

  908. God

  909. and there's sort of

  910. devils

  911. and where devils

  912. have lots of influence

  913. and we're sort of

  914. somewhere in between.

  915. And we can sort of

  916. be lured this way

  917. to where there's devils

  918. or we can be lured

  919. this way towards

  920. where there's God,

  921. but it's very powerful

  922. for most of us

  923. unless we've had

  924. a terrible experience

  925. with demonic oppression

  926. and possession.

  927. It's very common

  928. for us to think

  929. that somehow

  930. we are in a bit

  931. of a neutral area

  932. between these two.

  933. But what the Bible

  934. is revealing

  935. is that that entire image

  936. is wrong.

  937. Every human being

  938. lives here.

  939. Every human being

  940. lives here.

  941. And it's in fact

  942. out of here

  943. that Christ

  944. has redeemed us.

  945. It is out of here

  946. that Christ

  947. has saved us.

  948. It is out of here

  949. that Jesus

  950. adopts us

  951. as his child.

  952. It is out of here

  953. that we are,

  954. in the words

  955. of verse 31,

  956. that we are to

  957. abide in his word

  958. and you are truly

  959. my disciples

  960. and you will know

  961. the truth

  962. and the truth

  963. will set you free.

  964. We are to hear that

  965. while we're here.

  966. Not in some neutral places

  967. if we're gods.

  968. That's the original lie.

  969. I am a creature,

  970. not a god.

  971. In heaven,

  972. I will be a creature,

  973. not a god.

  974. Although,

  975. as C.S. Lewis

  976. so wonderfully put it,

  977. if a creature

  978. who is now

  979. in the new heaven

  980. and the new earth

  981. was to come

  982. to what is now

  983. the earth,

  984. the glory

  985. would be so deep

  986. and so wonderful

  987. that in fact

  988. we could hardly

  989. bear to look

  990. at such a creature

  991. and would be tempted

  992. to worship him or her.

  993. But we are not

  994. in the new heaven

  995. and the new earth yet.

  996. We are here.

  997. We dwell among

  998. a people

  999. of unclean lips.

  1000. I, Lord,

  1001. as well

  1002. have such

  1003. unclean lips.

  1004. So,

  1005. why be a Christian

  1006. if we're all

  1007. in the same boat?

  1008. If the devil

  1009. also whispers

  1010. to us,

  1011. well,

  1012. Jesus is going

  1013. to talk about this.

  1014. He's going to talk

  1015. about the great deliverance

  1016. that God has done

  1017. and he's going

  1018. to put everything

  1019. in a radically

  1020. different context.

1021. Look at what he does

  1022. and how he begins

  1023. to deal with this

  1024. in verse 45.

  1025. I've just paused

  1026. to make sure

  1027. we heard this

  1028. important teaching

  1029. in verse 44,

  1030. but listen to what

  1031. happened.

  1032. He keeps going.

  1033. But because I tell

  1034. you the truth,

  1035. because I tell

  1036. the truth,

1037. you do not believe me.

  1038. Isn't that interesting?

  1039. Because I tell

  1040. the truth,

1041. you do not believe me.

  1042. verse 46,

  1043. which of you

  1044. convicts me of sin?

  1045. That's an astounding

  1046. statement.

  1047. Listen,

  1048. if I told you

  1049. which of you

  1050. convict me of sin,

  1051. my wife and kids

  1052. would start to snicker

  1053. and laugh.

  1054. They know I'm a sinner.

  1055. Either that

  1056. or they'd start

  1057. to worry

  1058. that I had become

  1059. completely and utterly

  1060. deranged

  1061. and unhinged

  1062. to actually stand

  1063. in front of you

  1064. and say,

  1065. who can convict me

  1066. of a sin?

  1067. And then the staff

  1068. would start laughing

1069. and all of you would.

  1070. Maybe those of you

1071. who have just met me

  1072. think,

  1073. oh,

  1074. he hasn't sinned

  1075. since I've met him,

  1076. you know,

  1077. but I'm a sinner.

  1078. And Jesus gets there

  1079. and with a completely

  1080. and utterly straight face

  1081. says,

  1082. which one of you

1083. can convict me of sin?

  1084. Well,

  1085. what an arrogant thing

  1086. to say unless

  1087. something else

  1088. is going on.

1089. Look at verse 46 again.

  1090. Which one of you

  1091. convicts me of sin?

1092. If I tell the truth,

  1093. why do you not

  1094. believe me?

  1095. Whoever's of God

1096. hears the words of God.

  1097. The reason why

1098. you do not hear them

1099. is that you're not of God.

  1100. The Jews answered him,

  1101. are we not right

  1102. in saying that you

  1103. are Samaritan

  1104. and have a demon?

  1105. Verse 49,

  1106. Jesus answered,

  1107. I do not have a demon,

1108. but I honor my father

  1109. and you dishonor me.

  1110. Yet I do not

  1111. seek my own glory.

  1112. There is one

  1113. who seeks it

1114. and he is the judge.

  1115. Truly,

  1116. truly,

  1117. I say to you,

  1118. if anyone

  1119. keeps my word,

  1120. he will never

  1121. see death.

  1122. Now,

  1123. Jesus,

  1124. you know,

  1125. one of the things

  1126. which is very interesting

  1127. here in this,

  1128. if you read

  1129. John chapter 8,

    John 8:12

  1130. verse 12,

  1131. right to the end

  1132. of chapter 8,

  1133. 12 times

  1134. Jesus is

  1135. rebutted.

  1136. 12 times.

  1137. This isn't him

  1138. with a group

  1139. of his groupies

  1140. who hang on

  1141. as every word.

  1142. This is Jesus

  1143. talking in the midst

  1144. of conflict.

  1145. 12 times

  1146. people either

  1147. push back at him,

  1148. tell him he's wrong,

  1149. tell him he's a Samaritan,

  1150. tell him he's demon-possessed.

  1151. 12 times.

1152. And this is part of it.

  1153. These are hard-headed

  1154. Canadians,

  1155. in a sense,

  1156. who aren't going

  1157. to take guff

  1158. from somebody.

  1159. And so,

  1160. verse 52,

1161. the Jews said to him,

  1162. now we know

1163. that you have a demon.

  1164. Abraham died

  1165. as did the prophets.

  1166. Yet you say,

1167. if anyone keeps my word,

1168. he will never taste death.

  1169. Are you greater

  1170. than our father Abraham

  1171. who died

  1172. and the prophets died?

1173. Who do you make yourself

  1174. out to be?

  1175. I'm just sort of

1176. pause there for a second.

  1177. What Jesus is claiming?

  1178. He is claiming

  1179. that he is greater

  1180. than death.

  1181. And they got it.

  1182. He is claiming

  1183. that he is greater

  1184. than death.

  1185. And the claim

  1186. that he is greater

  1187. than death

1188. means that he is also

  1189. greater than sin

  1190. which causes death.

  1191. It's an unbelievably

  1192. powerful claim.

  1193. And you also notice

  1194. that they actually

  1195. changed Jesus' words.

  1196. He never says

1197. that he won't taste death.

1198. He says that the people

  1199. will never see death.

  1200. Although,

1201. as we are going to see

  1202. in a moment,

1203. we are going to loop back

1204. around this in a couple of minutes.

  1205. It's actually almost

  1206. like a prophetic thing.

  1207. They have caught up

  1208. a sense of Jesus

  1209. which they deny.

  1210. But in fact,

  1211. Jesus will taste death.

  1212. He will taste

  1213. my death for me

  1214. so that death

1215. no longer has a hold

  1216. on me.

  1217. And he does that

  1218. for you too, friend.

  1219. So continue reading.

  1220. It's going to get

  1221. even more remarkable.

  1222. Like,

  1223. how on earth

  1224. could anybody say

  1225. that they're greater

  1226. than death?

  1227. Verse 54,

  1228. Jesus answered,

  1229. if I glorify myself,

  1230. my glory is nothing.

  1231. It is my Father

  1232. who glorifies me

  1233. of whom you say

  1234. he is our God.

  1235. But you have not

  1236. known him.

  1237. I know him.

1238. And if I were to say

1239. that I do not know him,

1240. I would be a liar like you.

1241. But I do know him

1242. and I keep his word.

  1243. Your father Abraham

  1244. rejoiced that he would

  1245. see my day.

1246. He saw it and was glad.

1247. So the Jews said to him,

  1248. you are not yet

  1249. 50 years old.

  1250. And you,

  1251. have you seen Abraham?

  1252. Jesus said to them,

  1253. truly, truly,

  1254. I say to you,

  1255. before Abraham was,

  1256. I am.

  1257. He pronounces

  1258. the divine name.

  1259. He says he's God.

  1260. For the Jewish people,

  1261. it's to say,

1262. to use the divine name,

  1263. to use the divine,

  1264. you know,

  1265. it's actually,

  1266. this is true.

  1267. They,

  1268. in all the way

  1269. through the,

  1270. most like,

  1271. I think in the

  1272. English Standard Version,

1273. if you see in the

  1274. Old Testament,

  1275. the word for God,

  1276. Lord,

  1277. and if it's four

  1278. capital letters,

  1279. it's the,

  1280. it's four Hebrew letters.

  1281. And because the Jewish

  1282. people thought that

1283. the actual name of God

  1284. was so holy,

  1285. they thought that it

  1286. was wrong to even

  1287. say it.

  1288. And it's actually now,

  1289. they,

  1290. no longer,

  1291. people no longer know,

  1292. because they took out,

  1293. there's no vowels,

  1294. they no longer know

  1295. how to say it.

  1296. They don't know

  1297. how it was pronounced.

  1298. And in common language,

  1299. back then,

  1300. when they were coming

  1301. to the word Lord,

  1302. they would use another

  1303. word instead,

  1304. so they wouldn't say

  1305. the divine name.

1306. It is literally a word

  1307. that they no longer

  1308. know how it was

  1309. originally pronounced.

  1310. And Jesus not only

  1311. says the word,

  1312. but he says that

  1313. that's who he is,

  1314. that he's God.

  1315. And they recognize it

  1316. because look what happened.

1317. So they picked up stones

  1318. to throw at him,

  1319. but Jesus hid himself

1320. and went out of the temple.

  1321. Now,

1322. where are we with this?

  1323. Let's wrap it up.

1324. If you could put up

  1325. the next point,

  1326. Andrew,

  1327. that would be very,

  1328. very helpful.

1329. The first thing for us

  1330. to remember,

  1331. having said all this,

  1332. is that Jesus is

  1333. infinitely greater

  1334. than the devil.

  1335. And I mean infinitely

  1336. in the literal sense.

1337. The devil is a creature.

  1338. Jesus is God.

1339. God is an infinite being,

  1340. the only infinite being

  1341. that exists.

  1342. Everything else is finite.

  1343. So this talk

  1344. that's so common

  1345. in our culture

1346. as if there's yin and yang

  1347. and light and darkness

  1348. and opposing spiritual forces,

  1349. there are opposing forces,

  1350. obviously,

  1351. but they're not equal.

1352. They're not at all the same.

  1353. Jesus is infinitely greater

  1354. than the devil.

  1355. Infinitely greater

  1356. than the devil.

1357. And that gives us great hope.

1358. If you could put up

  1359. the next slide,

  1360. Andrew,

  1361. that would be great.

  1362. Because he is God,

  1363. by grace,

  1364. Jesus tasted death

  1365. for everyone

  1366. to save everyone

  1367. who trusts in him.

  1368. That's from the book

  1369. of Hebrews.

  1370. In other parts

  1371. in the New Testament

  1372. is that

  1373. because he is God,

  1374. by grace,

  1375. when Jesus tasted death,

  1376. when he tasted death,

  1377. he can taste death

  1378. for everyone.

1379. He dies my death for me.

1380. We talked about it last week.

  1381. Is that

1382. when you put your faith

  1383. and trust in Jesus,

  1384. then your sin

  1385. dies before you

  1386. because it dies

  1387. on him.

1388. But when you don't put

  1389. your faith and trust

  1390. in Jesus,

1391. you die in your own sin.

  1392. That's why he's

  1393. such a wonderful savior.

  1394. He tasted death

  1395. for everyone

  1396. because in grace

  1397. and mercy,

  1398. he wants to save

1399. all who put their faith

  1400. and trust in him.

1401. He wants to save you,

  1402. brother and sister.

1403. He wants to save you.

1404. And if you could put up

  1405. the next point,

1406. that would be very great.

  1407. Only Jesus

  1408. can silence

  1409. the hissing

  1410. lies of the serpent

  1411. so that you

  1412. can truly

  1413. listen to God

  1414. and freely think.

  1415. Remember,

  1416. this all goes back

  1417. in the Enlightenment

  1418. project,

  1419. which now we Canadians

  1420. are an heir of.

  1421. we know the truth

  1422. and the truth

  1423. will set us free.

  1424. And now turn into

  1425. you will know

  1426. your feelings

  1427. and your feelings

  1428. will set you free.

1429. But what did Jesus say?

  1430. If you abide

  1431. in my word,

  1432. you are truly

  1433. my disciples

  1434. and you will know

  1435. the truth

  1436. and the truth

  1437. will set you free.

  1438. Only Jesus

  1439. can silence

  1440. the hissing

  1441. lies

  1442. of the serpent

  1443. so that you

  1444. can truly

  1445. listen to God

  1446. and freely

  1447. think.

  1448. You see,

1449. that's one of the things

  1450. which is common

  1451. to every human being.

  1452. Are you rich

  1453. or are you poor?

  1454. For both,

  1455. there are the hissing

  1456. lies of the serpent

  1457. in your ears.

  1458. Are you Chinese?

  1459. Are you Rwandan?

  1460. Are you from

  1461. Mississippi?

  1462. Are you from Peru?

  1463. Doesn't matter

  1464. where you're from.

  1465. The hissing lies

  1466. of the serpent

  1467. is in your ears.

  1468. Do you have

  1469. a very high IQ

  1470. or a low IQ?

  1471. Are you really

  1472. good looking

  1473. or are you not

  1474. very good looking?

  1475. Are you very athletic

  1476. or not very athletic?

  1477. Are you a male

  1478. or a female?

  1479. We're all united

  1480. in the hissing

  1481. lies of the serpents

  1482. in our ears.

  1483. And only Jesus

  1484. can begin

  1485. to silence

  1486. the hissing

  1487. lies

  1488. of the serpent

  1489. in our ears.

  1490. And you know what?

  1491. You can't think

  1492. without listening.

1493. That's one of the things

  1494. which is so profound

  1495. in what Jesus says.

  1496. It's like modern

  1497. psychologists,

  1498. if you read books

  1499. like that,

  1500. I can't remember

  1501. the name of that,

  1502. psychologists,

  1503. anyway,

  1504. but thinking fast

  1505. and slow

  1506. or something like that

  1507. is,

  1508. it's increasingly

  1509. understood by psychologists.

  1510. Just what Jesus

  1511. says right here

  1512. is that thinking

  1513. is connected

  1514. to listening.

  1515. What is it

  1516. Jesus says?

  1517. if you abide

  1518. in my word,

  1519. if you listen,

  1520. in other words,

  1521. to my word,

1522. and you not only listen

  1523. but you bring it

  1524. into you

  1525. and you continue

  1526. listening to my word,

  1527. you are truly

  1528. my disciples

  1529. and you will know

  1530. the truth

  1531. and the truth

  1532. will set you free.

  1533. And if you could

1534. put up the final point,

  1535. Andrew,

  1536. that would be great.

  1537. Continue in the gospel

  1538. and God's word written.

  1539. Abide in it

  1540. in your day-to-day life.

  1541. And Christians

  1542. aren't just lone rangers,

1543. we're also to be part

  1544. of a local church.

  1545. So I added

  1546. that pray and plan

  1547. that your church,

  1548. that our church,

  1549. continues in the gospel

  1550. and God's word written,

  1551. abiding in it

1552. in all that it does.

  1553. So I'd mention

  1554. apartheid

  1555. and racism.

  1556. See,

  1557. one of the things

  1558. which is so important

  1559. about this

  1560. is the Bible

  1561. doesn't say

  1562. that the second

  1563. you become a Christian,

  1564. that the devil

  1565. stops hissing

  1566. in your ears.

  1567. And we Christians

1568. share in the human problem.

  1569. The difference is

  1570. that we have

  1571. a mighty Savior.

1572. We have a mighty Savior.

  1573. And this mighty Savior

  1574. is God,

  1575. the Son of God,

  1576. who is true,

  1577. who is only truth,

  1578. who only speaks truth

1579. and wants us to live

  1580. and abide in truth.

  1581. And Jesus came

  1582. to save us

  1583. from the lie

  1584. and save us

  1585. from lies.

  1586. And as we abide

  1587. in his word,

  1588. humbly coming to him

  1589. and saying,

  1590. Jesus,

  1591. you are God,

  1592. I am not.

  1593. You are infinite,

  1594. I am not.

  1595. You are perfect,

  1596. I am fallen,

  1597. I am broken.

  1598. You do not need

  1599. a Savior,

  1600. I need a Savior.

1601. As we come to him

  1602. humbly

  1603. and abiding

  1604. in his word,

  1605. there is the possibility

  1606. that the hissing lies

  1607. of the serpents

  1608. are silence

  1609. and we can start

  1610. to actually listen

  1611. to God

  1612. and know the truth

  1613. about human beings

  1614. and know the truth

  1615. about ourselves.

  1616. And this isn't just

1617. sort of an irrelevant thing

  1618. because as we begin

  1619. to hear the truth

  1620. from God,

  1621. it becomes easier

  1622. and easier

  1623. to hear the truth

  1624. in other places,

  1625. to hear the truth

  1626. in the world

  1627. and the truth

  1628. in science

  1629. and the truth

  1630. in terms of how

  1631. human beings move

  1632. and work and act.

  1633. It's something

  1634. which is far-reaching.

  1635. It's not just purely

  1636. and merely spiritual truth,

  1637. but truth.

  1638. Jesus,

  1639. the Father,

  1640. wants us to know

  1641. truth in general

  1642. and what happens

  1643. in apartheid

1644. is we listen to lies.

  1645. What happens in racism,

  1646. we listen to lies.

  1647. And here's the thing.

  1648. You know,

  1649. I would say,

1650. I might lose you with this,

1651. but I say that the problem

  1652. with the Koran

1653. is it needs to be corrected.

1654. I would say that the problem

  1655. with Hinduism

1656. is it needs to be corrected

  1657. from outside.

1658. I would say that the problem

  1659. with Buddhism

1660. is it needs to be corrected

  1661. from outside.

  1662. But I would say

1663. when it comes to things

  1664. like racism,

  1665. anyone who has listened

  1666. to the fact

  1667. that Jesus dies

  1668. for every person

  1669. and that every person

1670. is made in the image of God

1671. should never be a racist.

  1672. It is completely

  1673. and utterly rebuked.

1674. And not only is it rebuked

  1675. in the Word,

  1676. it is rebuked

  1677. by His shed blood.

  1678. He died for that.

  1679. Crap.

  1680. Crap.

1681. And I know that there are

  1682. some of you here

  1683. who have been complicit

  1684. in abortion,

  1685. and I don't say this

1686. to make you feel guilty.

  1687. Everything in God's Word,

1688. if it confronts us of sin,

  1689. it's because God wants

  1690. to connect to you

  1691. and to me

  1692. that we would come

  1693. to Him for healing.

1694. But we live in a culture

  1695. filled with lies.

  1696. There are many churches

  1697. that the denomination

  1698. that we left

  1699. was very, very weak

  1700. on things like abortion,

  1701. very, very weak

  1702. on euthanasia,

  1703. and those are lies.

  1704. You cannot kill

  1705. innocent human life.

  1706. And science,

  1707. it's not a religious doctrine.

  1708. Science teaches us

  1709. that human life

  1710. begins at conception.

  1711. That's a scientific fact.

  1712. And the fact that

  1713. Christians are pro-life

  1714. isn't because

  1715. we deny science.

1716. We just believe the science

  1717. and know you can't

  1718. take innocent human life.

  1719. And no church

  1720. should be complicit

1721. in the culture of death.

  1722. And we don't need

  1723. outside advice or wisdom.

1724. We just need to open

  1725. the Scriptures.

  1726. We need to become

  1727. more deeply and fully

  1728. disciples of Jesus Christ.

1729. the care for the poor

  1730. all the way

  1731. through the Bible.

  1732. The deconstructing

  1733. of the claims

  1734. of the powerful

  1735. all the way

  1736. through the Bible.

  1737. We do not need

  1738. to read Derrida

  1739. or Mark's.

  1740. We need to be

  1741. disciples of Jesus.

  1742. So just in closing,

  1743. continue in the gospel

  1744. and God's word written.

  1745. Abide in it

  1746. in your day-to-day life

  1747. and pray and plan

1748. that we as a church

  1749. and if you're a visitor

  1750. here from another church

  1751. that your church

1752. will continue in the gospel

  1753. and God's word written

  1754. abiding in it

1755. in all that it does.

  1756. And friends,

  1757. if you are here

1758. and you have not yet

1759. given your life to Jesus,

  1760. please consider

  1761. to do it today.

  1762. There's no better time

  1763. than right now.

  1764. It won't be better

  1765. tomorrow or next week.

  1766. I just really invite

  1767. and encourage you

  1768. to just to say

  1769. something like this

  1770. right now,

  1771. maybe even just

  1772. as I'm saying it,

  1773. just to say amen

  1774. to everyone.

  1775. Father,

  1776. I've believed the lie

  1777. and I believe lies.

  1778. And I am powerless

  1779. to save myself.

  1780. Jesus,

  1781. thank you

  1782. that you came

  1783. to save me

1784. if I put my trust

  1785. in you.

  1786. I give myself

  1787. to you.

  1788. Be my Savior

  1789. and my Lord.

  1790. Come and live

  1791. within me forever.

  1792. I encourage you

1793. to say that prayer today.

  1794. Please stand.

  1795. Father,

  1796. we thank you

  1797. that you are

  1798. infinitely greater

  1799. than the devil.

  1800. Father,

1801. the devil can tempt us

  1802. but he can't

  1803. make anything.

  1804. He can break things,

  1805. Father,

  1806. but he can't

  1807. make anything.

  1808. Father,

1809. we thank and praise you

  1810. that you give us

  1811. eternal life

1812. when we put our faith

  1813. and trust in you.

  1814. That you

  1815. have the power,

  1816. the right power

  1817. for salvation

  1818. for all who put

  1819. their faith and trust

  1820. in you.

  1821. That,

  1822. Father,

  1823. you have the ability

  1824. to adopt us

  1825. as your sons

  1826. and daughters.

  1827. You have the ability

  1828. to grip us

  1829. so that we will

  1830. never be let go

  1831. and that you will

  1832. bring us

  1833. to the new heaven

  1834. and the new earth.

  1835. You have the power

  1836. to silence

  1837. the hissing

  1838. of the serpent

  1839. that we might

  1840. begin to listen

  1841. to you

  1842. and listen to each

  1843. other and know

  1844. the truth

  1845. so that we are

  1846. free,

  1847. Father,

  1848. that we begin

  1849. to know freedom.

  1850. Father,

  1851. only you,

  1852. only Jesus,

  1853. only the gospel.

  1854. Father,

  1855. we thank you

  1856. for Jesus.

  1857. We thank you

  1858. for your word

  1859. written,

  1860. for his word.

  1861. Father,

  1862. we thank you

  1863. for the gift

  1864. of the Holy Spirit.

  1865. Father,

  1866. make us confident

  1867. in Jesus

  1868. in the gospel.

  1869. Make us joyful

  1870. in Jesus

  1871. in the gospel.

  1872. Make us disciples

  1873. of Jesus

  1874. who are gripped

  1875. by the gospel,

1876. who are day by day

  1877. learning to abide

  1878. in your word

  1879. as your disciples

  1880. gripped by the gospel

  1881. so that we might

  1882. know the truth

  1883. and be free,

  1884. free to love,

1885. free to bring you glory

  1886. in this city

  1887. and to the ends

  1888. of the earth.

  1889. Father,

  1890. we ask this

1891. in the name of Jesus.

  1892. Amen.
