  1. And then the next day, so it was like Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, another guy out of the blue asked me, an atheist said, George, what are you going to talk about on Sunday?

  2. And I said, well, I'm still trying to figure out a little bit about it, but it's a little bit about, you know, suffering and whether sin causes our suffering.

  3. And he said, my, and then I'm going to leave out the swear words and all that he said, but my bleep, bleep, bleep, bleep, bleep.

  4. He said, that's like one of the deepest, that is the deepest question that human beings ask.

  5. Why does, why do bad things happen to good people?

  6. And we had a bit of a conversation about it.

  7. So let's look at the text.

  8. It's John 9.

  9. All three of those types of issues sort of end up, I'm not going to really talk very much about how Jesus can be God, but all three of those things are in this text.

  10. So why don't we just turn and look?

  11. It's John chapter 9 and see sort of what happens in the Bible text in light of these questions and the questions that you yourselves have as well.

    John 9 chapter mention

  12. John chapter 9.

    John 9 chapter mention

  13. And it begins like this.

  14. As Jesus passed by, he saw a man blind from birth.

  15. Now, just sort of pause there for a second.

  16. And I didn't know this before I prepared this sermon, but there's a very interesting thing happening at the original language level.

  17. And it's this very few first few words.

  18. John very skillfully does two things.

  19. First, he just says some period of time is now passed from what happened in John 8 to what's happening now.

  20. Just some undisclosed period of time.

  21. Might have been a day.

  22. Might have been a week.

  23. Might have been two weeks.

  24. He doesn't tell us.

  25. Just some time passes.

  26. The other thing he does is in the original language, he uses the same words, a similar word, important word, as in the previous verse.

  27. So he connects the two stories.

  28. And he says, basically, I want you to listen in because what I'm talking about right here is actually connected to what Jesus just talked about,

  29. whether it was a week earlier or a month earlier or two weeks earlier, but it's directly connected.

  30. And in the earlier story, in John chapter 8, what launches the story is when Jesus makes the claim,

    John 8 chapter mention

  31. I am the light of the world.

  32. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.

  33. And that statement of Jesus that I am the light of the world.

  34. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.

  35. That sort of is what happens in John 8.

  36. And now Jesus, John is saying, this next story, even though it happens a bit later, that listen in, because it's really interesting,

  37. Jesus is going to take this idea and sort of do some really interesting things with it.

  38. And that's how John writes it, very simply.

  39. And I didn't pick up on it in English because it's something that's in the original language.

  40. So read verse 1 again.

  41. As Jesus passed by, he saw a man blind from birth, and his disciples asked him,

  42. Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?

  43. Now just sort of pause there for a second.

  44. He's just asked the big question, hasn't he?

  45. I mean, I have had times in my life, in fact, I've even had times just within the last week

  46. where I wonder, I catch myself, or actually I didn't catch myself at first,

  47. but I found myself drifting into asking, like, are some of these things that are happening to me,

  48. is that because I've sinned?

  49. In fact, it's a very, very human problem for Christians and non-Christians

  50. wondering if what's going on in their life is because they've done some particular sin

  51. or some pattern of sin in their lives.

  52. In fact, for many of you, or maybe not many of you, maybe some of you this morning,

  53. you're really struggling with that.

  54. There's some really, really hard things, some maybe dark things,

  55. some unpleasant things that you're going through,

  56. and your life is filled with this sense of doom that somehow or another

  57. you've done something that makes the unhappiness and the trouble that you're going through

  58. that you somehow or another deserve it.

  59. And you're not quite sure what to do about something like that,

  60. but it can be a very, very...

  61. Some of you this morning, you came here reluctantly

  62. because that really describes your inner life.

  63. You put on the Christian smile and welcome people,

  64. but the smile is on the outside and the inside.

  65. There's a type of suffering and a type of darkness that you're struggling with.

  66. So this is a real question.

  67. They say, Rabbi, in verse 2,

  68. who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind.

  69. So how does Jesus answer?

  70. How does he answer?

  71. He answers in a very, very interesting way.

  72. He says in verse 3,

  73. It was not that this man sinned or his parents,

  74. but that the works of God might be displayed in him.

  75. We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day.

  76. Night is coming when no one can work.

  77. And then listen to this.

  78. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

  79. I am the light of the world.

  80. So he repeats this thing that was in John chapter 8.

    John 8 chapter mention

  81. He makes the claim the second time in a very different context.

  82. I am the light of the world.

  83. It's a very, very, very big, very, very grandiose claim.

  84. Now, I'm going to return to this,

  85. circle back around to these opening verses,

  86. because in a sense,

  87. everything that's going to happen after this

  88. helps to put in context what Jesus has just said.

  89. But it's really important for you to note here

  90. that Jesus doesn't say that suffering never follows from sin.

  91. I mean, that would be foolish, wouldn't it?

  92. I mean, the person who drinks too much,

  93. gets behind the wheel of the car,

  94. and then goes off the road and crashes

  95. and becomes very disabled.

  96. We can see there's a very direct connection there

  97. between a particular sin of drunkenness

  98. and the second sin of getting behind the wheel of a car

  99. and the suffering that they happened.

  100. But Jesus makes the more general comment

  101. that as a general rule,

  102. what does not happen is that there's sin,

  103. and then there's a particular type of suffering

  104. that comes with it.

  105. By saying this, he denies karma.

  106. By saying this, he says that, in a sense,

  107. Buddhism and Hinduism are wrong.

  108. He also says that Islam is wrong,

  109. because in Islam, there is this idea

  110. of this overwhelming fate,

  111. that God has predetermined the course of your life.

  112. And so if things happen to you,

  113. it's all part of God's direct plan.

  114. And nobody can ever make any claim against God

  115. or ask him what he's doing.

  116. There's nothing like the book of Job in the Koran.

  117. And what Jesus is saying here is,

  118. Jesus is saying these whole ways of thinking are wrong,

  119. that what's going on in sin

  120. and whatever is going on with suffering,

  121. the way we're going to try to understand this

  122. is what's going on is that the works of God

  123. might be displayed in that person's life.

  124. But it's not going to be very obvious at first

  125. what that means until we read the rest of the story.

  126. But before we do that,

  127. you know, if you think about it for a second,

  128. anybody can make a claim like that, can't they?

  129. I mean, this is one of the hardest things I have

  130. to try to communicate to people

  131. when I talk about the Christian faith

  132. with those in coffee shops,

  133. is that, you know,

  134. a Christian believes that this is true.

  135. But anybody can make a claim like that.

  136. I mean, you know, Gary could say,

  137. I'm the light of the world.

  138. Dana could say, I'm the light of the world.

  139. You know, George could say, I'm the light of the world.

  140. Well, I don't know, sunshine, you know,

  141. maybe your friends think you're a ray of sunshine,

  142. you know, but that's a pretty big claim.

  143. And like,

  144. and so what's going to happen here

  145. is that Jesus is going to vindicate his claim.

  146. And I mean, he's going to really vindicate his claim

  147. by the end of the story,

  148. but he's going to vindicate his claim.

  149. How?

  150. In a very, very dramatic way,

  151. by doing something that human beings cannot do.

  152. Let's see.

  153. How does it go?

  154. Verse six.

  155. Having said these things, right?

  156. So having said,

  157. I am the light of the world.

  158. I'm the light of the world.

  159. Having said this,

  160. what does he do?

  161. He spits on the ground

  162. and made mud with the saliva.

  163. Then he anointed the man's eyes with the mud

  164. and said to him,

  165. go and wash in the pool of Siloam,

  166. which means scent.

  167. So he went and washed and came back seen.

  168. And by the way,

  169. nobody's ever thought that this is,

  170. Jesus believes that somehow spitting in mud

  171. will cure a person who's been born blind.

  172. That's a whole other topic of conversation

  173. to why he might have done that.

  174. But he does this partially just to show

  175. that he can do a miracle in different ways.

  176. He doesn't have to do it all the same time.

  177. And so he does this particular thing.

  178. And the neighbors, in verse eight,

  179. and those who had seen the man

  180. who before as a beggar,

  181. sorry, verse eight,

  182. the neighbors and those who had seen him

  183. before as a beggar were saying,

  184. is this not the man who used to sit and beg?

  185. Some said it is he.

  186. Others said nobody is like him.

  187. And he kept saying,

  188. I am the man.

  189. It's me.

  190. I'm the guy who was there,

  191. you know, that you all saw.

  192. So they said to him,

  193. then how were your eyes opened?

  194. And he answered,

  195. the man called Jesus made mud

  196. and anointed my eyes and said to me,

  197. go to Siloam and wash.

  198. So I went and washed and received my sight.

  199. And they said to him,

  200. where is he?

  201. He said, I do not know.

  202. Now, if you think about this,

  203. this man is a,

  204. it's a very remarkable thing.

  205. It's in fact,

  206. I can't even begin to imagine

  207. what it's like for this man

  208. because he has never seen.

  209. That means he has never seen light.

  210. He, if you were to say to him,

  211. it's bright outside,

  212. there would be no place in his brain

  213. to understand what that means.

  214. He's never seen a color.

  215. Like he doesn't even have a memory of color

  216. or a memory.

  217. In a sense,

  218. he can't even long for color

  219. because all he's ever known

  220. is darkness,

  221. the dark,

  222. his entire life.

  223. So he has no memory,

  224. no longing,

  225. no yearning.

  226. And on one level,

  227. he doesn't even really know

  228. what he's missing on one level.

  229. And so in a very powerful way

  230. and in a very particular way,

  231. Jesus is saying he is the light of the world

  232. and he does a remarkable miracle

  233. to actually bring light

  234. and sight

  235. and openness to this man

  236. who once only knew darkness

  237. and now he knows light.

  238. And,

  239. yeah,

  240. I'll take a minute.

  241. This miracle actually

  242. is a really significant miracle

  243. in another way

  244. because it helps us to understand

  245. a little bit

  246. about how most miracles work.

  247. I mean,

  248. in a sense that

  249. this is a miracle

  250. and it works because

  251. God has the power

  252. and he just does it,

  253. right?

  254. And Jesus doesn't pray

  255. that the man would receive his sight.

  256. He just does it.

  257. He just,

  258. he just,

  259. he just does it.

  260. And in all miracles,

  261. in most miracles,

  262. you see this combination

  263. of things that goes on.

  264. On one hand,

  265. what,

  266. and by the way,

  267. medicine can't disprove miracles

  268. and the more we know about medicine,

  269. all it would do is

  270. it would just increase the wow.

  271. Wow.

  272. This must have gone on.

  273. And I guess,

  274. I don't know if Jeremiah is here today

  275. and maybe he'd be able to tell us

  276. about different ways

  277. that a person might never

  278. have been able to see

  279. and maybe he's missing

  280. an optic nerve,

  281. maybe there's something

  282. actually physically missing

  283. in the eye.

  284. You know,

  285. we don't know what it is.

  286. But what would have happened

  287. is that Jesus would have had to do

  288. an act of creation

  289. within the man.

  290. Maybe there is an optic nerve

  291. which was never there from birth

  292. and Jesus would have created

  293. an optic nerve

  294. where no optic nerve

  295. existed before.

  296. He creates something

  297. out of nothing

  298. within the man.

  299. But you see,

  300. that's exactly what God does

  301. at the beginning,

  302. isn't it?

  303. The beginning of the gospel,

  304. how does it begin?

  305. You know,

  306. in fact,

  307. I quoted this to the guy

  308. trying to understand miracles

  309. and who Jesus was.

  310. I said,

  311. you know,

  312. the gospel begins,

  313. in the beginning was the word

  314. and the word was with God

  315. and the word was God.

  316. He was with God

  317. in the beginning.

  318. All things were made

  319. through him

  320. and without him

  321. nothing was made

  322. that was made.

  323. In him was life

  324. and the life

  325. was the light of men.

  326. And so what,

  327. God makes everything

  328. out of nothing

  329. and Jesus,

  330. who is God,

  331. the son of God,

  332. he makes something

  333. within the man

  334. that wasn't there.

  335. And also,

  336. Jesus would have had to

  337. maybe have removed

  338. something that was there.

  339. Maybe there was something

  340. that was blocking,

  341. something that was clouding.

  342. And so at the same miracle

  343. where Jesus just wills

  344. something to be there

  345. that wasn't there before,

  346. he wills things

  347. that shouldn't be there

  348. that were stopping the sight

  349. just to be gone.

  350. He removes them.

  351. God can bring things

  352. into existence

  353. and he can take things

  354. out of existence

  355. because he is God.

  356. And the third thing

  357. that goes on in the miracle

  358. is that there's inner healing.

  359. Because even in ancient times

  360. they knew

  361. that if a person started to,

  362. if a person's eyes were open,

  363. you have to learn how to see.

  364. Somebody really unhappy, eh?

  365. You have to learn how to see.

  366. It's not just something

  367. that just your eyes are there

  368. and all of a sudden

  369. you can see.

  370. You have to learn.

  371. So it's a very interesting thing.

  372. It shows that the miracle of Jesus,

  373. there's an act of creation,

  374. there's an act of removal,

  375. and there's an inner healing

  376. in the mind

  377. so that the mind,

  378. as soon as the eyes are open,

  379. he's able to see.

  380. For the first time in his life,

  381. he sees red

  382. and blue

  383. and brown

  384. and green.

  385. and the warmth

  386. that he always experienced

  387. at certain times of the day,

  388. he now realizes

  389. is from the sun.

  390. And, I mean,

  391. I'm smiling when I can say this,

  392. but can you imagine

  393. the way his face would change

  394. to all of a sudden

  395. see color

  396. and see faces,

  397. see people?

  398. people?

  399. And so the people

  400. don't believe at first

  401. that it's the same guy.

  402. I mean,

  403. who can heal a man born blind?

  404. And his face even looks

  405. a little bit different.

  406. It really is the same guy.

  407. So some of us might say,

  408. okay, George,

  409. well, that's very easy,

  410. you know,

  411. but people back then

  412. were gullible.

  413. So here's a bit of a timeout.

  414. People back then

  415. were gullible.

  416. We're not,

  417. right?

  418. Like,

  419. we don't have anybody

  420. bothered by conspiracy theories

  421. or anything like that.

  422. We're,

  423. we just effortlessly believe

  424. that a few people

  425. can tweak things

  426. in Facebook

  427. and we, like,

  428. automadons,

  429. like we're robots,

  430. we just vote one way?

  431. Really?

  432. Come on.

  433. Who's gullible?

  434. Like, okay,

  435. you know what?

  436. Being gullible

  437. is a human problem

  438. that's existed

  439. in every age.

  440. Right?

  441. It's existed

  442. in every age.

  443. It's not that we're not gullible

  444. and they were.

  445. And so one of the things

  446. which is so interesting

  447. in this text

  448. is that this text,

  449. 12 times in the text,

  450. remember,

  451. this is an ancient biography

  452. of Jesus,

  453. 12 times in the text

  454. it's emphasized

  455. that the man had been blind.

  456. And what we see

  457. is an investigation

  458. into

  459. whether or not

  460. he actually had been blind.

  461. And the investigation

  462. is carried out

  463. by skeptics.

  464. It's carried out

  465. by those

  466. in the position

  467. of the elite

  468. who are skeptical.

  469. carry out

  470. an investigation.

  471. And John records it.

  472. Look at what happens

  473. in verse 13.

  474. So the crowd,

  475. they bring to the Pharisees

  476. the man

  477. who had formerly

  478. been blind.

  479. So what they do

  480. is they bring,

  481. you know,

  482. they say to themselves,

  483. I don't know,

  484. we're just all simple people.

  485. You know,

  486. we're just business people.

  487. We're just people

  488. who sweep

  489. and stuff like that.

  490. We're going to bring

  491. this guy

  492. to the educated people,

  493. the people

  494. who understand,

  495. they've learned,

  496. they know how to read,

  497. they know how to write,

  498. they've studied,

  499. and they're in positions

  500. of power and authority.

  501. And if you really want

  502. to know something,

  503. you go to them.

  504. And they know the scriptures

  505. and they know the way

  506. the world works

  507. and they just know

  508. and understand things.

  509. Let's bring this guy

  510. to them.

  511. So that's what happens

  512. in verse 13.

  513. They brought to the Pharisees

  514. the man who had formerly

  515. been blind.

  516. Now it was a Sabbath day

  517. when Jesus made the mud

  518. and opened his eyes.

  519. Uh-oh.

  520. Right?

  521. Once again,

  522. Jesus isn't breaking

  523. the Sabbath.

  524. He's breaking

  525. one of the regulations

  526. that was humanly invented.

  527. Okay?

  528. That's what's going on.

  529. Anyway,

  530. the same humans

  531. who invented it

  532. are a bit pissed off

  533. that he's gone ahead

  534. and done something

  535. he shouldn't have done

  536. according to them.

  537. Verse 15.

  538. So the Pharisees again

  539. asked him

  540. how he had received

  541. his sight.

  542. And the man

  543. who had been blind,

  544. the he,

  545. said to them,

  546. he put mud on my eyes

  547. and I washed

  548. and I see.

  549. So some of the Pharisees

  550. said,

  551. this man is not from God.

  552. He does not keep the Sabbath.

  553. But others said,

  554. how can a man

  555. who is a sinner

  556. do such signs?

  557. And there was a division

  558. among them.

  559. So they said again

  560. to the blind man,

  561. what do you say about him

  562. since he has opened

  563. your eyes?

  564. And the man said,

  565. he's a prophet.

  566. Now,

  567. they all just go,

  568. okay,

  569. well,

  570. I guess he did it.

  571. No,

  572. no,

  573. no,

  574. no,

  575. no,

  576. no,

  577. no,

  578. they're skeptics.

  579. They're just as much

  580. a skeptic

  581. as the next

  582. real skeptic

  583. that you meet.

  584. And so

  585. they said,

  586. verse 18,

  587. the Jewish leaders

  588. did not believe

  589. that he had been blind

  590. and had received his sight.

  591. Why?

  592. Well,

  593. because,

  594. you know what,

  595. back then there were

  596. con men and con women

  597. and there's con men

  598. and con women today.

  599. I mean,

  600. there are,

  601. right?

  602. There's all sorts

  603. of crazy people.

  604. People who make

  605. all sorts of claims.

  606. People who claim

  607. that they were,

  608. you know,

  609. UFOs captured them

  610. and they spent time

  611. and there's all sorts

  612. of crazy people,

  613. right?

  614. Back then and now.

  615. So they're not going

  616. to just take a big claim

  617. like this at face value.

  618. So,

  619. verse 18,

  620. the Jews did not believe

  621. that he had been blind

  622. and received his sight

  623. until they called

  624. the parents of the man

  625. who had received his sight

  626. and asked them,

  627. is this your son

  628. who you say

  629. was born blind?

  630. How then does he now see?

  631. Two questions.

  632. His parents answered,

  633. we know that this is our son

  634. and that he was born blind,

  635. but how he now sees

  636. we do not know,

  637. nor do we know

  638. who opened his eyes.

  639. Ask him,

  640. he is of age,

  641. he will speak for himself.

  642. His parents said these things

  643. because they feared

  644. the Jewish leaders

  645. for the Jewish leaders

  646. had already agreed

  647. that if anyone should confess

  648. this to be Christ,

  649. he was to be put out

  650. of the synagogue.

  651. Therefore,

  652. his parents said,

  653. he is of age,

  654. ask him.

  655. Now,

  656. just sort of pause here

  657. for a second.

  658. This is so contemporary,

  659. isn't it?

  660. This is just so contemporary.

  661. I mean,

  662. the fact of the matter is

  663. is that we always deal

  664. with groups

  665. that are completely

  666. and utterly closed.

  667. I mean,

  668. some of you have probably

  669. been in situations,

  670. maybe you're in the civil service

  671. and you have to prepare

  672. a report

  673. and maybe,

  674. you know,

  675. the deputy minister

  676. or whatever,

  677. somebody like two or three

  678. or four levels above you,

  679. they're telling you

  680. how everything is going great,

  681. everything's going rosy,

  682. and all the other people

  683. who are just underneath

  684. that top dog,

  685. you know,

  686. when she's saying

  687. all these things,

  688. you know,

  689. they don't want

  690. to rock the boat

  691. and you're down

  692. like four levels

  693. below that person

  694. and what she's saying

  695. and you don't want

  696. to put up your hand

  697. and say,

  698. well,

  699. actually,

  700. the program delivery

  701. sucks

  702. and nothing's working

  703. and no,

  704. it's very hard

  705. to do that

  706. when there's groupthink,

  707. isn't it?

  708. I mean,

  709. and it could just be,

  710. you know,

  711. the,

  712. I mean,

  713. I don't know,

  714. you know,

  715. it's just the governor general

  716. of the,

  717. not at the,

  718. who is it,

  719. who just reported

  720. that all of the spending things

  721. of the Ontario government

  722. were way wrong.

  723. You know,

  724. I'm sure,

  725. I'm sure there must have been

  726. a couple of people in there

  727. who knew,

  728. but it's really hard

  729. when all the people in power

  730. are saying one thing

  731. and you know

  732. you're not going to be liked,

  733. it's going to ruin your career,

  734. you're going to be in trouble

  735. if you actually try

  736. to speak the truth.

  737. It's a very human problem.

  738. That's what's going on right here.

  739. In fact,

  740. I wish now

  741. that the first fellow

  742. who asked me

  743. my question about these things,

  744. he had,

  745. he had been formerly

  746. behind the Iron Curtain

  747. and escaped

  748. from the Iron Curtain

  749. and it would have been

  750. a real way

  751. to relate to him

  752. and say,

  753. listen,

  754. you know,

  755. they're dealing right there

  756. with the same things

  757. that you dealt with

  758. when you live behind

  759. the Iron Curtain

  760. and you're allowed

  761. to speak the truth

  762. because it just gets

  763. the powers mad

  764. and that's what's going on here.

  765. There's this,

  766. they're afraid

  767. to speak the truth.

  768. It's a very,

  769. very contemporary issue.

  770. And so,

  771. how is it now?

  772. They've done an investigation.

  773. They know that he was born blind.

  774. And by the way,

  775. this was probably

  776. a very,

  777. very public figure

  778. because there's only

  779. a certain number

  780. of entrances

  781. into a place.

  782. He would have been there

  783. all of the time.

  784. He would have been there

  785. for years

  786. and he would have been

  787. a well-known fellow.

  788. This is a guy,

  789. there's lots of people

  790. who know that he used

  791. to be born blind.

  792. His parents said

  793. he was born blind.

  794. Now he's seen.

  795. So verse 24,

  796. what do they do?

  797. What do they do?

  798. What do the educated,

  799. the elite,

  800. the people in power,

  801. what do they do?

  802. Well, let's look.

  803. So for the second time

  804. they called the man

  805. who had been born blind

  806. and said to him,

  807. give glory to God,

  808. we know that this man

  809. is a sinner.

  810. Isn't that wonderful?

  811. Isn't that exactly

  812. what powerful people do

  813. when the truth

  814. is inconvenient?

  815. Like,

  816. I don't know

  817. what's going on,

  818. but we know

  819. this can't be the truth.

  820. So,

  821. give glory to God

  822. is like calling him

  823. to make a solemn oath.

  824. Like,

  825. if you go into court

  826. and you have to

  827. declare the truth,

  828. the whole truth

  829. and nothing but the truth

  830. or however they word it.

  831. So they basically say,

  832. listen,

  833. we're going to make you

  834. take an oath

  835. and by the way,

  836. before you take the oath,

  837. we already know

  838. what the answer

  839. is supposed to be.

  840. So give us the answer

  841. we're expecting you

  842. to give us.

  843. So how does the man respond?

  844. Verse 25,

  845. he answers,

  846. whether he,

  847. isn't this,

  848. this is one of the greatest lines

  849. I think in the Gospels

  850. and it's in the hymn

  851. Amazing Grace

  852. as well.

  853. He answered,

  854. whether he is a sinner,

  855. I do not know.

  856. One thing I do know

  857. that though I was blind,

  858. now I see.

  859. The inconvenient truth.

  860. One thing I know

  861. that though I was blind,

  862. now I see.

  863. They said to him,

  864. what did he do to you?

  865. How did he open your eyes?

  866. He answered them,

  867. I've told you already

  868. and you would not listen.

  869. Why do you want to hear it again?

  870. Do you want to become

  871. his disciples?

  872. Remember,

  873. this guy had been a beggar

  874. for 25 years.

  875. He knew how to take guff.

  876. He knew how to give guff,

  877. right?

  878. Like,

  879. you know,

  880. they're not pushover

  881. street people,

  882. right?

  883. They know how to give it back.

  884. Like,

  885. they've gotten it

  886. from lots of people.

  887. So,

  888. he's being cheeky now.

  889. Oh,

  890. you want to be his disciple,

  891. eh?

  892. And,

  893. verse 28,

  894. and they reviled him.

  895. So,

  896. you can see

  897. they really are interested

  898. in the truth.

  899. They reviled him.

  900. You are his disciple,

  901. but we are disciples of Moses.

  902. We know that God

  903. has spoken to Moses,

  904. but as for this man,

  905. we do not know

  906. where he comes from.

  907. The blind man

  908. who now sees,

  909. answered,

  910. why?

  911. This is an amazing thing.

  912. You do not know

  913. where he comes from,

  914. and yet he opened my eyes.

  915. We know that God

  916. does not listen to sinners,

  917. but if anyone is a worshiper

  918. of God and does his will,

  919. God listens to him.

  920. Never since the world began

  921. has it been heard

  922. that anyone opened the eyes

  923. of a man born blind.

  924. Like,

  925. this is the most remarkable miracle

  926. in the history of the world.

  927. He's not making any comment

  928. about whether or not

  929. a surgeon could do it now.

  930. That's science.

  931. He's talking about a miracle.

  932. This is the most,

  933. this is an unbelievably remarkable,

  934. this is just a spectacular miracle.

  935. He continues,

  936. if this man were not from God,

  937. he could do nothing.

  938. Isn't that true?

  939. He could do nothing.

  940. They answered him,

  941. you were born in utter sin,

  942. and would you teach us?

  943. And they cast him out.

  944. Kicked him out of the synagogue.

  945. They expelled him.

  946. And,

  947. you know,

  948. this is,

  949. how does he,

  950. how does he respond

  951. to all of this?

  952. I've lost my spot

  953. in my notes.

  954. Actually,

  955. yeah,

  956. this is,

  957. this whole story

  958. actually is going to shed

  959. a little bit of light

  960. into something that happens

  961. at the end of the Gospels

  962. and takes place

  963. in the book of Acts.

  964. See,

  965. there's a really,

  966. I mean,

  967. one of the undeniable

  968. historical facts

  969. about how the Christian faith began.

  970. I mean,

  971. other than maybe

  972. a few Marxists

  973. who live under a rock,

  974. like,

  975. other than a few Marxists

  976. living under a rock,

  977. everybody knows

  978. that Jesus existed,

  979. everybody knows he dies,

  980. even the most hardened skeptics

  981. do not doubt

  982. that he died

  983. by crucifixion.

  984. And,

  985. and yet,

  986. within a short time

  987. after his death,

  988. literally,

  989. and I mean literally

  990. in the old-fashioned sense

  991. of literally

  992. to mean literally,

  993. like literally,

  994. tens of thousands

  995. of people

  996. come to believe

  997. that he had risen

  998. from the dead

  999. in the very city

  1000. where the crucifixion happened.

  1001. That's an undeniable

  1002. historical fact.

  1003. It's not as if,

  1004. you know,

  1005. in most other religions,

  1006. there's,

1007. in most other religious movements,

  1008. I, you know,

  1009. I say,

  1010. by the way,

  1011. guys,

1012. I'm the light of the world,

  1013. you know,

  1014. believe in me,

1015. and I suck one of you

  1016. into believing it,

  1017. and they go,

  1018. whoa, okay,

1019. give me all your money,

  1020. by the way,

1021. because we have to live on it.

  1022. And then, you know,

1023. I suck in a couple of others,

1024. and there's this slow growth.

1025. Now, this is like a spectacular,

1026. this is like from zero

  1027. to,

  1028. in fact,

1029. what happens in the book of Acts

  1030. in chapter two,

  1031. the disciples proclaim

1032. that the tomb is empty

  1033. because Jesus has risen

  1034. from the dead.

  1035. He is the one

  1036. that the scriptures

  1037. had predicted would come

  1038. that God had promised,

  1039. and the,

1040. is it not just me,

1041. it's going in and out,

  1042. right?

  1043. A little bit?

  1044. Okay.

  1045. And the Bible says

  1046. that 3,000 men

  1047. are baptized that day,

1048. and what that means for,

  1049. I don't know why

  1050. they just said men,

1051. that means it might have been

  1052. 10,000 or 12,000 people,

1053. and then like a week later,

  1054. there's another 2,000 added to it.

  1055. That means there's like

  1056. maybe 10,000 people.

  1057. That means like within

  1058. like a month and a half,

  1059. there's like 20,000 Christians

  1060. in Jerusalem

  1061. who all believe

1062. that Jesus rose from the dead.

  1063. So on one hand,

1064. this miracle helps to put

1065. a little bit of light on that,

  1066. that on one hand,

1067. I mean the man comes to believe

1068. as we're going to see

  1069. in a moment, right?

  1070. But then some people

  1071. just refuse to believe.

  1072. The problem isn't evidence,

  1073. it's just an absolute,

  1074. complete, utter,

  1075. willful refusal to believe.

  1076. And that goes on

1077. in all of our lives.

1078. But look how it happens

  1079. with this man.

  1080. Verse 35,

  1081. Jesus heard that they

  1082. had cast him out,

  1083. and having found him,

  1084. he said,

1085. do you believe in the son of man?

1086. And the son of man

  1087. is from Daniel.

  1088. It's sort of a figure

1089. that it's hard for Jewish people

  1090. to read that text

  1091. because it basically sounds

  1092. like Daniel's describing God.

1093. And he's called the son of man.

1094. It's in the book of Daniel.

  1095. And the man answered,

1096. and who is he, sir,

1097. that I may believe in him?

  1098. Jesus said to him,

  1099. you have seen him?

1100. And it is he who is speaking to you.

  1101. And he said,

  1102. Lord, I believe.

  1103. And he worshipped him.

  1104. Just so you know,

  1105. that word worshipped

1106. is the exact same word

  1107. that's used in John 4

1108. when the woman at the well

  1109. says to Jesus,

1110. are we supposed to go

  1111. to worship God

  1112. in this mountain

  1113. or in Jerusalem?

  1114. Same word.

  1115. It means worship

  1116. as God.

  1117. And verse 39,

  1118. Jesus said,

  1119. for judgment I came

  1120. into this world

1121. that those who do not see

  1122. may see

  1123. and those who see

  1124. may become blind.

  1125. Some of the Pharisees

  1126. heard these things

  1127. and said to him,

  1128. and by the way,

1129. when I say these next words

  1130. in the original language,

  1131. it's scornful.

  1132. It's not like,

  1133. good grief.

1134. Are you talking about me?

  1135. It's like,

  1136. who are you?

  1137. Who are you?

  1138. You ignorant hick.

  1139. Who are you,

  1140. you ignorant hick,

  1141. to call me blind?

  1142. Like, how dare you?

  1143. You're hardly smart.

  1144. I mean,

1145. you don't have the education.

1146. You don't have the smarts.

1147. You don't have the connections.

1148. You don't have the family.

  1149. How dare you?

  1150. That's how we're to hear,

  1151. are we also blind?

  1152. It's scorn.

  1153. It's a sneer.

  1154. It's a put down.

  1155. Jesus said to them,

  1156. if you were blind,

1157. you would have no guilt.

1158. But now that you say,

  1159. we see,

  1160. your guilt remains.

1161. So what's going on here?

1162. Just to sort of wrap this,

1163. what's going on here in this story?

  1164. It's a wonderful story,

  1165. isn't it?

  1166. And, you know,

  1167. the most important thing

1168. I can do to you

1169. is help you to hear the story

1170. because the words of the Bible

1171. will do its own work in you

1172. if you just hear the story.

1173. But here's the first thing.

1174. If you could put it up,

  1175. Andrew,

  1176. what Jesus is saying

1177. is that every human being

  1178. is blind from birth.

  1179. Jonathan,

1180. you are blind from birth.

  1181. Daniel and Christine,

1182. you are blind from birth.

  1183. Don,

1184. you are blind from birth.

  1185. George,

  1186. I was born blind.

  1187. Every human being

  1188. is blind from birth.

  1189. You know,

  1190. it's a very,

  1191. very wonderful thing.

1192. If this starts to grip us,

1193. if this was the only thing,

  1194. by the way,

  1195. it would just be

  1196. unbelievably depressing.

  1197. Obviously,

  1198. this story says

  1199. a whole lot more.

  1200. But it's a very,

  1201. very,

  1202. very wonderful thing,

  1203. you know.

  1204. how is it

  1205. that we could possibly

  1206. share the gospel

  1207. with somebody

  1208. who has maybe

  1209. an ideology

  1210. or politics

  1211. that we just abhor,

  1212. a lifestyle

  1213. that we think

  1214. is completely wrong?

  1215. Well,

  1216. if this grips us,

  1217. there's a real power.

  1218. You know what?

  1219. Because that person,

  1220. you know,

  1221. that we just think

  1222. is so wrong

  1223. or so evil,

  1224. you know what?

  1225. Me and him

  1226. or me and her,

  1227. we're the same.

1228. we were both born blind.

  1229. We're both born blind.

  1230. This text isn't saying

  1231. that Christians

  1232. were born seen

  1233. and that other people

  1234. are born blind.

  1235. This is saying

  1236. every human being

  1237. is born blind.

  1238. It's a very,

  1239. very powerful equalizer.

  1240. I mean,

  1241. I have to confess

  1242. that I have fear

  1243. about trying to share

  1244. the gospel

  1245. with some people

  1246. and I,

  1247. in fact,

1248. just a couple of months ago

  1249. the Lord convicted me

  1250. that why was it

  1251. in a coffee shop

  1252. that I,

1253. I'm just going to be

  1254. really honest with you.

  1255. Why is it

  1256. in a coffee shop

  1257. I invited three people

  1258. to consider coming

1259. to one of my Easter services

  1260. but the fellow,

  1261. the gay fellow

1262. who was in a partnered relationship

  1263. I didn't invite him.

  1264. And it,

  1265. and it,

1266. and the Lord convicted me

  1267. of sin.

  1268. Like,

1269. why did I do that?

  1270. Why did I have

  1271. that sin of omission?

  1272. You know,

1273. the fact of the matter is

1274. is that every human being

  1275. is born blind.

  1276. And,

1277. and here's the second thing,

1278. the hard part for us

  1279. is that,

  1280. well,

  1281. why doesn't Jesus

  1282. just heal our blindness?

  1283. Like,

  1284. why does it,

  1285. he's up in heaven,

  1286. why doesn't just heal,

  1287. heal your blindness,

  1288. heal your blindness?

  1289. Well,

  1290. I really,

  1291. I have to confess

  1292. that sort of,

  1293. that question

  1294. struck me this week,

  1295. especially as I'm trying

  1296. to figure out

  1297. how John 9

1298. fits in with the rest

  1299. of the book

1300. that why it goes on

1301. to the death of Jesus

  1302. on the cross

  1303. and his resurrection.

  1304. And then,

  1305. believe it or not,

  1306. I got,

1307. I got help from the movie

1308. The Guardians of the Galaxy

  1309. Volume 2.

1310. I'm not making that up.

  1311. I really was.

1312. I was praying to the Lord.

  1313. Why is it?

  1314. Why is it,

  1315. Lord,

1316. like you don't just heal?

  1317. And,

  1318. you know,

1319. one of the things about prayer,

  1320. I'm a real slow learner.

  1321. Some of you folks

1322. are really good at prayer.

1323. So pray that I learn

  1324. how to pray better.

1325. But one of the things

1326. I try to slowly learn

1327. is that when you ask

  1328. a prayer of God,

1329. often he puts a thought

1330. in your mind right away

1331. and often it's the answer.

  1332. I don't like the answer.

  1333. I keep thinking

  1334. for something else.

  1335. So I've been praying

1336. about this for several days.

1337. Nothing's coming to my mind.

  1338. All of a sudden,

  1339. Volume 2,

1340. The Guardians of the Galaxy

  1341. comes in.

1342. And what comes into my mind

  1343. is how Drax defeats

  1344. the monster

  1345. towards the beginning

  1346. of the movie.

1347. And if you've seen the movie,

  1348. it's a silly movie.

1349. But there's this big monster

  1350. and all of the

  1351. Guardians of the Galaxy

  1352. are fighting the monster.

1353. And it's very, very funny.

  1354. The little cute Groot

1355. is dancing to some music

  1356. while all these,

  1357. they're all being thrown

  1358. all over the place.

  1359. And finally,

  1360. the only way

1361. that the monster is killed

  1362. is Drax,

  1363. with his swords,

  1364. gets eaten.

1365. And he kills the monster

  1366. from the inside.

1367. And that's the second point

1368. you would put it up.

  1369. But some things

  1370. can only be defeated

  1371. from within.

  1372. You know,

  1373. it's especially true

1374. if love and truth matter,

  1375. isn't it?

  1376. I mean,

1377. what's one of the things

  1378. that makes us feel

  1379. that we are loved

  1380. is when somebody

1381. has this bit of a sense,

  1382. you can tell

  1383. that they know

  1384. what it's like

  1385. to be within.

  1386. Like love

  1387. works from within.

  1388. Like you can see

  1389. one teacher

  1390. maybe with a kid

  1391. who's crying

  1392. and all they do,

1393. they don't really love the kid,

1394. so they just tell the kid,

  1395. shut up,

  1396. smarten up,

  1397. you know,

  1398. and if the strap

  1399. was still allowed,

  1400. you know they'd give

1401. the strap to that kid

  1402. right then.

  1403. But other teachers,

  1404. they know there's something

1405. going on in the kid

1406. and they love the kid

1407. and they want to know

  1408. what's going on

  1409. within the kid

1410. and they ask the question

1411. and they come and put

  1412. their arm around them

  1413. because,

  1414. you know,

  1415. if love matters,

  1416. often in love,

1417. it has to be dealt with

  1418. from within.

  1419. Same with truth,

  1420. isn't it?

  1421. Real truth

  1422. doesn't coerce.

  1423. Real truth

  1424. doesn't coerce.

  1425. Real truth

  1426. is allowed

  1427. to work within.

  1428. And to God,

  1429. love and truth

  1430. really matter.

1431. He really does love you

  1432. and he loves me.

  1433. And so some things

  1434. can only be defeated

  1435. from within.

  1436. And that's why

1437. if you could put up

  1438. the next slide,

  1439. Andrew,

  1440. that on the cross,

  1441. death and darkness

  1442. devoured

1443. the light of the world

  1444. to their doom.

  1445. that's what happens

  1446. in John 19.

  1447. In John 19,

  1448. it is the light

  1449. of the world

  1450. who's hanging

  1451. on the cross.

  1452. The light

  1453. of the world

  1454. is hanging

  1455. on the cross

  1456. and sin

  1457. devours

  1458. him

  1459. in a sense.

  1460. Darkness

  1461. devours

  1462. him.

  1463. death

  1464. devours

  1465. him.

  1466. But you know

  1467. what's just so interesting?

  1468. This is why

  1469. the resurrection

  1470. is so important.

  1471. It isn't that

  1472. death and darkness

  1473. devour

  1474. Jesus

  1475. and then

  1476. it's like

  1477. they go,

  1478. oh,

  1479. he doesn't taste

  1480. very good.

  1481. Vomit

  1482. him out.

  1483. That would still

  1484. leave death

  1485. and darkness

  1486. raining,

  1487. wouldn't it?

  1488. they don't

  1489. vomit

  1490. Jesus

  1491. out.

  1492. They are

  1493. doomed

  1494. when they

  1495. swallow

  1496. him

  1497. and devour

  1498. him

  1499. and they're

  1500. defeated

  1501. in his

  1502. resurrection.

  1503. The light

  1504. of the world

  1505. conquers

  1506. darkness

  1507. and the light

  1508. of the world

  1509. conquers

  1510. dark

  1511. and light

  1512. is essential

  1513. to life.

  1514. And in the same

  1515. way for you

  1516. and me,

  1517. I,

  1518. like you,

  1519. was born blind.

  1520. And you know

  1521. what?

  1522. If we are honest,

  1523. every single

  1524. human being

  1525. is a little bit

  1526. a walking

  1527. darkness

  1528. and every human

  1529. being in some

  1530. way is a,

  1531. not in every

  1532. human being,

  1533. in the most

  1534. literal sense

  1535. is a walking

  1536. death.

  1537. It's the one

  1538. thing we know

  1539. that will happen

  1540. to us that's

  1541. inescapable

  1542. is our death.

  1543. And Jesus,

  1544. the light of the

  1545. world,

  1546. has to enter

  1547. in.

  1548. And burst

  1549. asunder

  1550. the darkness

  1551. and death.

  1552. He has to

  1553. enter in

  1554. to defeat

  1555. it from

  1556. within,

  1557. to deal

  1558. with our

  1559. darkness

  1560. and to deal

  1561. with our

  1562. death.

  1563. If you could

  1564. put up the

  1565. final thing,

  1566. the light

  1567. of the world

  1568. enters in,

  1569. my eyes

  1570. are opened,

  1571. sight is

  1572. given,

  1573. and the light

  1574. shines within

  1575. where darkness

  1576. used to rain.

  1577. The light

  1578. of the world

  1579. enters in,

  1580. my eyes

  1581. are opened,

  1582. sight is

  1583. given,

  1584. and the light

  1585. shines within

  1586. where darkness

  1587. used to rain.

  1588. You know,

  1589. first of all,

  1590. one of the things

  1591. about the gospel

  1592. which is so

  1593. wonderful is the

  1594. already not yet,

  1595. and that we need

  1596. to understand

  1597. all the time

  1598. with the gospel.

  1599. On one hand,

  1600. this is exactly

  1601. literally true.

  1602. When you invite

  1603. Jesus into your life,

  1604. the light of the

  1605. world comes within.

  1606. And that's a

  1607. possession now,

  1608. the light of the

  1609. world,

  1610. that's uncreated

  1611. light,

  1612. eternal light

  1613. now comes and

  1614. lives within you.

  1615. And that,

  1616. it will never

  1617. leave.

  1618. How can you

  1619. remove uncreated

  1620. light?

  1621. How can you

  1622. remove eternal

  1623. light?

  1624. And in a sense,

  1625. when we die,

  1626. all that will

  1627. happen is that

  1628. that promise of

  1629. that eternal

  1630. life and light

  1631. and uncreated

  1632. light that's within

  1633. us,

  1634. it just,

  1635. it carries us

  1636. through the

  1637. valley of the

  1638. shadow of death

  1639. into a brighter

  1640. future,

  1641. the new heaven

  1642. and the new

  1643. earth.

  1644. But that's the

  1645. already,

  1646. but on the other

  1647. hand,

  1648. there's the not

  1649. yet,

  1650. isn't there,

  1651. where we still

  1652. have to have

  1653. God's will

  1654. because he

  1655. respects us

  1656. and loves us.

  1657. There's time

  1658. when I have to

  1659. let the light

  1660. of the world

  1661. to shine

  1662. within the

  1663. different things

  1664. of my shame

  1665. and my confusion

  1666. and my darkness

  1667. and my suffering

  1668. where I really am.

  1669. And it's that

  1670. already,

  1671. not yet.

  1672. But there's two

  1673. other things,

  1674. which I know

  1675. it's already

  1676. 41 minutes,

  1677. but just very

  1678. briefly,

  1679. if you could

  1680. go back

  1681. and look at

  1682. those early

  1683. verses,

  1684. they're very

  1685. precious.

  1686. Chapter 9,

  1687. verses 3 and

  1688. following,

  1689. it was that

  1690. Jesus says,

  1691. it was not

  1692. this man's sin

  1693. or his parents,

  1694. but that the

  1695. works of God

  1696. might be

  1697. displayed in

  1698. him.

  1699. We must

  1700. work the

  1701. works of

  1702. him who

  1703. sent me

  1704. while it

  1705. is day.

  1706. Night is

  1707. coming when

  1708. no one can

  1709. work.

  1710. As long as

  1711. I am in the

  1712. world,

  1713. I am the

  1714. light of the

  1715. world.

  1716. And one of

  1717. the things

  1718. which is so

  1719. powerful about

  1720. this is that

  1721. Jesus says

  1722. here,

  1723. this person,

  1724. don't think in

  1725. terms of whether

  1726. this man's

  1727. sin or his

  1728. parents.

  1729. You know what

  1730. happens when we

  1731. think in those

  1732. terms?

  1733. It creates

  1734. pride and

  1735. inaction,

  1736. doesn't it?

  1737. Like if I

  1738. think,

  1739. oh, look at

  1740. that poor street

  1741. person,

  1742. or look at that

  1743. person who's

  1744. suffering,

  1745. just imagine the

  1746. terrible things

  1747. they've done in

  1748. their lives to

  1749. lead them to

  1750. that,

  1751. and look at

  1752. me.

  1753. Like I'm

  1754. healthy.

  1755. Like I have a

  1756. house.

  1757. I have a

  1758. beautiful wife.

  1759. I have kids.

  1760. Like just think

  1761. how good I am.

  1762. And like they

  1763. deserve what

  1764. happened to

  1765. them.

  1766. That's what

  1767. happens when

  1768. you get caught

  1769. up with fate

  1770. and karma.

  1771. It just,

  1772. it furthers

  1773. pride.

  1774. It creates

  1775. hardness of

  1776. heart.

  1777. It creates

  1778. distance from

  1779. human beings.

  1780. But what does

  1781. Jesus say?

  1782. Don't think in

  1783. terms of sin.

  1784. What should

  1785. you think of?

  1786. Think of how

  1787. the glory of

  1788. God and

  1789. the works

  1790. of God

  1791. can work

  1792. in them.

  1793. What is

  1794. that saying

  1795. to me?

  1796. Walk

  1797. towards the

  1798. person.

  1799. Walk

  1800. towards the

  1801. person.

  1802. Walk

  1803. towards them

  1804. to bring

  1805. a comforting

  1806. arm,

  1807. to sit

  1808. with them

  1809. in their

  1810. suffering,

  1811. to deal

  1812. with them

  1813. and to

  1814. bring some

  1815. relief.

  1816. That's

  1817. why we,

  1818. that's,

  1819. that's why,

  1820. that's why

  1821. you have

  1822. people who

  1823. go to

  1824. Angola

  1825. and that's

  1826. why you

  1827. have people

  1828. who work

  1829. amongst the

  1830. poor and

  1831. that's why

  1832. you have

  1833. people who

  1834. work,

  1835. we walk

  1836. towards them.

  1837. The gospel,

  1838. one of the

  1839. implications of

  1840. the gospel is

  1841. you walk

  1842. towards the

  1843. person,

  1844. you walk

  1845. towards the

  1846. suffering.

  1847. And then the

  1848. final thing,

  1849. the works,

  1850. what is it,

  1851. we must work,

  1852. but the works

  1853. of God might be

  1854. displayed in him.

  1855. It means that it

  1856. is possible that

  1857. there is meaning

  1858. in suffering

  1859. and that God

  1860. can redeem

  1861. our suffering.

  1862. that's what it

  1863. means.

  1864. Sickness

  1865. and failure

  1866. and death

  1867. can have

  1868. meaning.

  1869. That even

  1870. if you are

  1871. very old,

  1872. your life does

  1873. not have to

  1874. be a waste.

  1875. You do not

  1876. have to listen

  1877. to how the

  1878. world puts

  1879. you in your

  1880. place and

  1881. calls you and

  1882. labels you

  1883. failure.

  1884. And your

  1885. life never

  1886. passed.

  1887. That no matter

  1888. what point in

  1889. time that you

  1890. have given

  1891. your life to

  1892. Jesus and

  1893. the light

  1894. comes into

  1895. the world,

  1896. that that

  1897. light can

  1898. begin to

  1899. redeem your

  1900. suffering and

  1901. give meaning

  1902. to your life

  1903. and that God

  1904. can use you

  1905. with your

  1906. messy past

  1907. and your

  1908. messy present

  1909. to bring

  1910. him glory.

  1911. To bring

  1912. him glory.

  1913. as the

  1914. light of

  1915. the world

  1916. shines within

  1917. you and

  1918. shines through

  1919. you.

  1920. You are

  1921. not a

  1922. failure

  1923. when you

  1924. put your

  1925. faith and

  1926. trust in

  1927. Jesus.

  1928. He can

  1929. and will

  1930. redeem

  1931. even the

  1932. darkest

  1933. things about

  1934. you and

  1935. turn them

  1936. to great

  1937. glory.

  1938. glory.

  1939. There was

  1940. a same

  1941. sex attracted

  1942. man in

  1943. a church

  1944. that I

  1945. had a

  1946. long talk

  1947. with a

  1948. couple of

  1949. years ago

  1950. and he

  1951. was saying

  1952. to me that

  1953. he couldn't

  1954. understand how

  1955. it is that

  1956. he could be

  1957. called to be a

  1958. Christian.

  1959. This was in

  1960. another city.

  1961. I wasn't able to

  1962. have a follow-up

  1963. with him although

  1964. I gave him a

  1965. recommendation for

  1966. a church.

  1967. I never knew

  1968. what happened

  1969. to him.

  1970. And I said

  1971. to him,

  1972. you know,

  1973. I don't know

  1974. how God is

  1975. going to

  1976. exactly redeem

  1977. what goes on

  1978. in you but I

  1979. know he

  1980. will.

  1981. And you

  1982. know,

  1983. I said,

  1984. men like me

  1985. who are

  1986. heterosexual,

  1987. we have

  1988. sexual problems

  1989. and life

  1990. isn't just a

  1991. bed of roses

  1992. just because

  1993. I'm opposite

  1994. sex attracted.

  1995. But here's

  1996. what I do

  1997. know.

  1998. Who knows

  1999. what

  2000. unbelievable

  2001. things you

  2002. can accomplish

  2003. for God

  2004. when you

  2005. let Jesus

  2006. into your

  2007. life and

  2008. you choose

  2009. to be

  2010. faithful.

  2011. Who knows

  2012. out of your

  2013. struggle to

  2014. remain faithful

  2015. what works

  2016. of literature

  2017. or poetry,

  2018. who knows

  2019. how it will

  2020. soften you

  2021. for his

  2022. passion in

  2023. ways that

  2024. will shock

  2025. and astonish

  2026. the world.

  2027. Who knows

  2028. only the

  2029. Lord knows

  2030. what greatness

  2031. might flow

  2032. from you

  2033. allowing the

  2034. Lord in

  2035. and the

  2036. faithfulness

  2037. to follow

  2038. him.

  2039. But I

  2040. know that

  2041. he will

  2042. redeem.

  2043. what goes

  2044. on in

  2045. your life

  2046. if you

  2047. trust in

  2048. him.

  2049. I don't

  2050. make that

  2051. claim as

  2052. a human

  2053. being.

  2054. It's what

  2055. the Bible

  2056. tells us.

  2057. Please

  2058. stand.

  2059. if you're

  2060. here and

  2061. you have

  2062. never given

  2063. your life

  2064. to Jesus

  2065. there is

  2066. no better

  2067. time than

  2068. right now

  2069. to just

  2070. to say

  2071. Jesus

  2072. for the

  2073. light of

  2074. the world

  2075. please come

  2076. into my

  2077. life as

  2078. the light

  2079. of the

  2080. world

  2081. and shine

  2082. your light

  2083. in every

  2084. aspect of

  2085. who I am

  2086. and make me

  2087. yours.

  2088. There is no

  2089. better time

  2090. than now

  2091. just to say

  2092. that in the

  2093. words of

  2094. this scripture

  2095. and for

  2096. every one

  2097. of us who

  2098. are struggling

  2099. with different

  2100. parts of

  2101. darkness

  2102. there is no

  2103. better time

  2104. than now

  2105. than just

  2106. to say

  2107. to Jesus

  2108. Jesus I have

  2109. been struggling

  2110. with this

  2111. darkness

  2112. Jesus I

  2113. just bring

  2114. your light

  2115. to bear

  2116. and help me

  2117. Lord to

  2118. follow the

  2119. light

  2120. to know what

  2121. it means to

  2122. follow the

  2123. light in this

  2124. particular case

  2125. help me to

  2126. trust that as

  2127. your light

  2128. comes into

  2129. that which is

  2130. dark that

  2131. and as

  2132. you lead

  2133. in terms

  2134. of the

  2135. light coming

  2136. into the

  2137. darkness

  2138. that your

  2139. light will

  2140. only bring

  2141. life where

  2142. there is

  2143. darkness

  2144. Lord I

  2145. believe help

  2146. me to

  2147. believe more

  2148. and just

  2149. shine your

  2150. light in

  2151. those dark

  2152. areas of

  2153. my life

  2154. in those

  2155. areas that

  2156. aren't

  2157. dark

  2158. Lord I

  2159. thank you

  2160. so much

  2161. for the

  2162. light that

  2163. is there

  2164. I thank

  2165. you so

  2166. much that

  2167. the light

  2168. does not

  2169. reign within

  2170. me

  2171. I mean the

  2172. darkness

  2173. does not

  2174. reign within

  2175. me anymore

  2176. that you

  2177. the light

  2178. of the world

  2179. reign within

  2180. me

  2181. do that

  2182. business with

  2183. God

  2184. Father pour

  2185. out your

  2186. Holy Spirit

  2187. upon us

  2188. pour out your

  2189. Holy Spirit

  2190. upon us

  2191. draw us

  2192. again and

  2193. again to

  2194. the gospel

  2195. draw us

  2196. again and

  2197. again to

  2198. Jesus

  2199. thank you

  2200. Father that

  2201. the light

  2202. of the world

  2203. was devoured

  2204. by darkness

  2205. on the cross

  2206. and that you

  2207. defeated the

  2208. darkness and

  2209. the death

  2210. and sin

  2211. from within

  2212. for us

  2213. thank you

  2214. Lord for

  2215. that great

  2216. victory

  2217. for us

  2218. thank you

  2219. thank you

  2220. that the

  2221. darkness

  2222. will never

  2223. put the

  2224. light of

  2225. the world

  2226. out

  2227. you have

  2228. conquered

  2229. and you

  2230. offer to

  2231. live within

  2232. ordinary

  2233. human beings

  2234. like us

  2235. forever

  2236. to fit us

  2237. for the light

  2238. Father thank you

  2239. for Jesus

  2240. Jesus thank you

  2241. for what you

  2242. have done

  2243. for us

  2244. and all this

  2245. we ask and

  2246. thank you

  2247. in Jesus

  2248. name and

  2249. all God's

  2250. people said

  2251. Amen

  2252. Amen
