  1. This morning we are continuing our series called God's Beautiful Design, and we're looking at these areas of gender and marriage and sexuality.

  2. These are real hot-button issues in our culture and our society.

  3. And this morning we are looking in particular at the subject around marriage.

  4. L.P. Hartley wrote a book called The Go-Between, and the opening lines of this book go like this.

  5. The past is a foreign country. They do things differently there.

  6. The past is a foreign country. They do things differently there.

  7. In other words, sometimes the past seems so radically different from what we're experiencing now, it might as well be an intercontinental move.

  8. And even though it was just a few years ago, it's a little bit...

  9. And I think the one area in which we're experiencing this maybe more than any other is the area of sexuality, gender, and marriage.

  10. It feels in many ways like our culture is a T10 typhoon is moving through our culture,

  11. and we haven't even kind of emerged to assess the aftermath, except this typhoon is not just passing through.

  12. It's here to stay.

  13. It's a little bit of an old example, but bear with me.

  14. I think one example of how quickly our culture's attitude towards marriage and gender and sexuality is changing

  15. is seen in the previous U.S. President, Barack Obama.

  16. In 2008, he was campaigning in his first term of office, campaigned against same-sex marriage.

  17. Four years later, campaigning for his second term, he campaigned for same-sex marriage.

  18. And then at the end of his second term, just three years later, was threatening to withhold federal funding

  19. from any states that didn't allow transgendered children to use the bathroom of their choice in public schools.

  20. So here we see an example, just recently, of in a matter of just a few short years,

  21. the cultural norms and societal attitudes towards gender and marriage and sexuality changing so radically.

  22. Now, I'm not making a political statement at all about any of those things.

  23. I'm just trying to make the point of how quickly our views in society are changing on these matters.

  24. Now, it's important to know that while the past may feel like a different country,

  25. that doesn't necessarily mean that it's always a better country.

  26. Sometimes we can think of traditional values as maybe aligning with our own values,

  27. and things are changing so quickly that we can think the past is good,

  28. the future is scary and dangerous.

  29. And that's not necessarily always the case.

  30. There's lots about the past and even traditional values that were oppressive and restrictive,

  31. and we should celebrate that much of that has changed.

  32. I think one example is the persecution and the animosity,

  33. which generally the church has attributed towards the gay community and towards women.

  34. And we should celebrate that much of that is changing.

  35. And the church has not always been on the right side of history.

  36. And the Bible shows us that both conservatives and liberals,

  37. progressives and traditionals,

  38. both of us can be blinded by our own ideas and ideology.

  39. And so this makes things confusing.

  40. If things are changing so quickly,

  41. and if both conservatives and liberals can get these things wrong,

  42. how do we who are followers of Jesus and who love the Bible make sense of all these things?

  43. Where do we stand?

  44. Do we go with culture?

  45. Do we not go with culture?

  46. How do we make sense of this changing landscape?

  47. Well, in Romans chapter 12, verse 2,

    Romans 12:2

  48. in the message translation, it says this,

  49. Don't become so well adjusted to your culture that you just fit in without even thinking.

  50. Instead, fix your attention on God.

  51. You'll be changed from the inside out.

  52. Readily recognize what He wants from you and quickly respond to it.

  53. And friends, that bit of wisdom is going to help us as the tides of culture sway this way and that,

  54. and ebb and flow, and as culture is confusing as it is,

  55. God's wisdom about not being so readily swayed by culture,

  56. but fixing our minds on the sovereign God who said,

  57. I am God, I do not change,

  58. is going to give us profound sanctity and security and wisdom,

  59. even as culture changes so readily and so quickly.

  60. Okay?

  61. Don't become so adjusted to your culture that you fit in without even thinking.

  62. Fix your attention on the sovereign God,

  63. the God who said,

  64. I am the Lord, I do not change,

  65. therefore you are safe.

  66. Malachi 3, verse 6.

    Malachi 3:6

  67. And so, sexual relations have the ability to be uniquely satisfying,

  68. but they also have the ability to cause unprecedented pain and trauma and heartache.

  69. And the pain and the trauma that is caused by sexual sin and brokenness is unlike anything else,

  70. which is why we want to take the time to look at these things.

  71. Now, for those of us that are Christians,

  72. I hope you know that the Bible is not just a book of rules and spiritual truth and principles.

  73. The Bible is, in fact, one big story from beginning to end.

  74. And this story has four chapters in it, four divisions or parts to it.

  75. And the four chapters are creation, fall, redemption, restoration.

  76. Or another way is creation, fall, redemption, consummation.

  77. Okay?

  78. And so those are the four chapters or the four points of this morning's talk.

  79. Right in the very beginning of the Bible,

  80. the very first few pages, we start off with a wedding.

  81. And it's the wedding of Adam and Eve, the very first people that God created.

  82. And then if you go right to the end of the Bible,

  83. Revelation chapter 19 and chapter 21, we see another wedding.

    Revelation 19 chapter mention

  84. And this time it's between the ascended Christ and His bride,

  85. which the Bible describes as the church.

  86. If you're new to church or new to the Bible this morning,

  87. that might sound like a strange concept.

  88. But God describes all His people in all the earth as His church universal.

  89. And one day we will be reunited with God.

  90. And there will be such depth and unity of intimacy between God's people and God

  91. that it's described as like Christ, who's a bridegroom, marrying His bride.

  92. And so the Bible starts with a wedding and it ends with a wedding.

  93. Ray Ortlund said it like this,

  94. It's not as though marriage is just one theme along many themes in the Bible.

  95. Instead, marriage is the wraparound concept for the entire biblical story,

  96. within which all the other themes of the Bible find their place.

  97. In other words, there's an inherent story across the Bible.

  98. And it starts off with a bride pledged to her groom,

  99. who then gets seduced by a lie by another lover.

  100. And the rest of the Bible story is this groom going on an out-of-this-world adventure

  101. to win back his bride for himself.

  102. And the Bible story ends with their wedding.

  103. Now friends, this is important to understand

  104. because if we don't understand this,

  105. so much of what we read in between the first and the last chapters of the Bible

  106. won't make sense, right?

  107. You read the Old Testament prophets and you think,

  108. Why is this guy so angry?

  109. Why is he so emotional?

  110. He needs to just calm down a little bit

  111. until you realize it's the passionate plea of a lover calling back his lover to himself, right?

  112. You read the New Testament and you think,

  113. Why is this guy taking sin so seriously?

  114. I mean, everyone sins.

  115. Come on.

  116. None of us are perfect.

  117. Until you realize that sin is like a lover that's left their spouse

  118. and God's calling us, wooing us back to himself.

  119. And so to make sense of the Bible,

  120. we need to understand the story of the Bible.

  121. Okay, so let's dive in at chapter 1, creation.

  122. Jefferson and Betty read for us Genesis chapter 1, right?

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  123. Thank you, Betty, for affirming me there.

  124. And in chapter 1, we see that God creates mankind, male and female, man and woman,

  125. with a particular design in mind.

  126. Now, friends, part of the trauma of our modern society

  127. is that we've taken the design that God planned for us

  128. and we've thrown it out the window.

  129. And we've decided to build our lives without the designer referencing the designer.

  130. And this is not a good idea, right?

  131. It's much like trying to build a house or apartment blocks

  132. without reference to the architect.

  133. Okay, that's not going to work out well.

  134. And so God has a design and His design for us is that we are made in His image or in His likeness.

  135. Now, what does this mean?

  136. What does it mean to be made in God's image?

  137. It means that everything God asks us to do and everything He asks us to be

  138. is rooted in the reality that we are made to reflect Him, His nature, and His glory into all creation.

  139. This is the essence of what it means to be human, to live in a relationship with God,

  140. to live for Him, and to live for His glory.

  141. And so much of the confusion of our culture and our world is experiencing

  142. is because we've rejected this design and we are confused.

  143. We've disconnected humanity from God's design that we are made in His image for His glory and to reflect Him.

  144. Now, what does this mean for marriage and sexuality?

  145. Well, it means a couple of things.

  146. It means, by design, marriage is meant to reflect God in unity and diversity.

  147. Okay?

  148. In unity and diversity.

  149. So in Genesis chapter 1, we see, we get these hints that God is one God, but He's not merely one.

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  150. He's something more than one.

  151. In other words, right in Genesis chapter 1, we start to get hints of the Trinity.

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  152. The fact that God is one, but He's three.

  153. In chapter 1 verse 2, it says,

  154. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

  155. And verse 2 says,

  156. And the Spirit of God hovered over the darkness.

  157. We get a hint that there's something else going on here.

  158. And then in the verse that Jefferson and Betty read to us, what does God say?

  159. Let me make mankind in my image.

  160. Is that what He said?

  161. No?

  162. What does He say?

  163. Let us make mankind in our image.

  164. And so in the image of God, He made them male.

  165. In the image of God, He made them male and female.

  166. In other words, the Trinity, which is a great mystery.

  167. Okay?

  168. We don't fully understand it.

  169. Is that God is three, but He's also one.

  170. And though this is hard to understand,

  171. marriage in some way reflects or shows, displays the mystery of God's Trinity.

  172. It reflects the glory of God.

  173. And it does this in the fact that God brings two diverse human beings, male and female,

  174. who remain male and female.

  175. They don't lose their sex when they become married.

  176. But in some deep spiritual way, these two become one.

  177. Now, in the Trinity, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are not interchangeable.

  178. They've each got a unique role in creation and a unique role in salvation.

  179. They're not interchangeable.

  180. And yet, neither one is more important, more God-like, or higher than the other one.

  181. They're all equally God.

  182. And the same way, in marriage, is the coming together of two people

  183. who don't just merely like each other or have the same interests.

  184. You know, you like tennis, I like tennis, let's get married.

  185. Now, marriage is the coming together of two people who are distinct from each other.

  186. And yet, when they come together like God, there is a two becoming one.

  187. There is a unity in diversity.

  188. Does that make any sense?

  189. Okay.

  190. Likewise, by design, marriage, especially intimacy in marriage,

  191. reflects God's self-giving love.

  192. One of the most essential and important verses in the New Testament

  193. to describe the nature and character of God is 1 John chapter 4.

    1 John 4 chapter mention

  194. Okay?

  195. And it says, three words,

  196. God is love.

  197. Okay?

  198. Not that God is loving or that God shows love to His people, but God is love.

  199. Now, how can the Bible say that God is love?

  200. What does that mean?

  201. Well, when you take the three persons of the Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,

  202. the fundamental essence of their relationship is characterized by mutual self-giving,

  203. selflessness, and servant-hearted towards one another.

  204. It's this selfless love they give of themselves to one another.

  205. And it's this aspect of God's nature and His character which marriage most clearly is designed to represent an image,

  206. to reflect God in His glory in His initiating self-giving love to the other person.

  207. Think of the greatest commands in the Bible, right?

  208. Remember one day a young man comes to Jesus and he says,

  209. Rabbi, what is the most important command?

  210. And Jesus says, get married and have sex, right?

  211. No, He doesn't say that.

  212. What does He say?

  213. He says, love the Lord your God and love other people.

  214. Why is this the most important command in the Bible?

  215. You'd think of the way our culture thinks about sexuality,

  216. that relationships and intimacy would be the most important thing.

  217. But Jesus says, the most important thing is to love God and love others.

  218. Why?

  219. Because that's when we're fully human.

  220. That's the way that God has designed us,

  221. is that we're most alive, we're most like God,

  222. when we are selfless and self-giving of ourselves and pour out our love for one another.

  223. This is the essence of what it means to be human,

  224. that we are most like our maker, most alive and most imaging God,

  225. when we pour ourselves out in loving God and loving each other.

  226. Because we are made in His image,

  227. all people, particularly in marriage,

  228. God's design is that it's built on the principle of not consuming love,

  229. but giving love.

  230. One of the ways that we do this,

  231. that we pour out ourselves for our spouses and one another,

  232. is that we love our spouses by helping them to love and see Jesus more.

  233. As Francis Chan said,

  234. we help prepare our spouses for eternity.

  235. God doesn't give us marriage to make me happy,

  236. but that I can help my wife or my spouse become more like Jesus.

  237. Friends, is your spouse more in love with Jesus?

  238. Is he or she more secure in His love?

  239. Is he or she more grateful for grace,

  240. more thankful for His mercy,

  241. more worshipful in His presence?

  242. God's design is that marriage is for two people to come together,

  243. not to consume love,

  244. but to give love to one another.

  245. And then finally,

  246. marriage by design is meant to reflect God's forgiveness and His grace.

  247. Remember, in the book of Jeremiah,

  248. God reminds His people,

  249. and He says,

  250. Remember how God has said to you,

  251. I've loved you with an everlasting love.

  252. I've drawn you in with an unfailing kindness.

  253. Now, we don't need to read far in the Bible

  254. to recognize that the way we reciprocated God's unfailing kindness towards us

  255. was with self-centeredness and self-glory.

  256. And that's the cause for so much heartache and pain.

  257. And yet, the glory of God shines through

  258. and is never-ending, never-giving up,

  259. always and forever love.

  260. And so, Psalm 103 says,

  261. The Lord is merciful and gracious,

  262. slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.

  263. He does not deal with us as our sins deserve,

  264. nor repay us according to our iniquities.

  265. And in many ways, the permanency of marriage,

  266. the fact that at your wedding vows,

  267. you say,

  268. Until death do us part,

  269. that I will look over your sin,

  270. that I won't hold your sin against you,

  271. the fact that I forgive you and extend grace for you,

  272. is a reflection and imaging of God's amazing steadfast love for us.

  273. You see, in many ways,

  274. marriage is meant to be like a picture, right?

  275. A photograph.

  276. And it's a picture of who God is,

  277. His incessant, unending love.

  278. But it's also a picture of His profound love for us,

  279. His covenant people,

  280. for those who have come to know Him

  281. and be in relationship with Him.

  282. But it's also a picture of,

  283. for those who know God,

  284. the depth of intimacy

  285. that they will one day experience in heaven

  286. when we do get to know God.

  287. And sex and sexual intimacy in the context of marriage

  288. is a picture of the oneness and the unity

  289. and the intensely beautiful and intimacy,

  290. intimate relationship that God's people

  291. will one day have with Him in heaven.

  292. Now, what does that mean for us?

  293. Because, let me say it this way.

  294. At my desk in our room,

  295. I've got a picture of the family, right?

  296. And Claire and the three girls.

  297. And it's a picture,

  298. and when they are not there,

  299. it shows me how amazing they are,

  300. beautiful they are.

  301. But I don't fall in love with the picture.

  302. The picture is just merely a picture

  303. of a greater reality.

  304. I don't, on my anniversary,

  305. go and take that picture out for dinner

  306. and just say thank you for what an amazing picture you are.

  307. These last 10 years have been really wonderful.

  308. And I'm just looking forward to the next 10 years

  309. of me and you together at the desk, right?

  310. The picture is just a picture.

  311. But marriage is the real thing.

  312. Now, in many ways,

  313. what God is saying is that marriage is just a picture.

  314. It's a picture of a far more deep and profound reality,

  315. which is who God is,

  316. which is His deep, covenantal,

  317. never-ending, faithful promise to us, His people.

  318. But it's also a picture of the reality

  319. that we will one day experience

  320. when we get to heaven, to be with Him.

  321. Now, what does this mean?

  322. Well, it means that we take marriage

  323. and we take sex and marriage very seriously.

  324. Very important.

  325. Marriage is a picture of who God is.

  326. And it's a picture of His profound covenant with His people.

  327. So we take marriage very seriously.

  328. This is why divorce and casual sexual relationships

  329. are so serious,

  330. because it's a misrepresentation of God

  331. and His love and His glory.

  332. And so when we don't take marriage seriously,

  333. in a way, it's like defacing this image.

  334. It's like saying,

  335. drawing a picture on the image and defacing it.

  336. We take marriage very seriously.

  337. But at the same time,

  338. it means we don't take marriage too seriously,

  339. because it's just the picture.

  340. It's not reality.

  341. It's not the end for which we were made.

  342. It's as if life and meaning are found in marriage.

  343. As if being single somehow means you're subhuman

  344. or your life is not fully fulfilled.

  345. Marriage is a picture,

  346. but in the end, it's only a picture.

  347. It's not the ultimate reality for which you were made.

  348. There is a true and a better and ultimate reality

  349. which awaits those who come into this covenant relationship with Christ.

  350. Friends, if you're here this morning

  351. and you're not a Christian,

  352. you're not a believer,

  353. can I urge you to see that all the pleasures in this world

  354. and all the pleasures for which your body craves

  355. and all the sexual pleasures which your body desires

  356. are merely pictures,

  357. merely photographs of what could be yours

  358. if you are in Christ.

  359. Friends, that's why,

  360. that's what Jesus is offering you this morning.

  361. And that's why I want you to become a Christian.

  362. That's why I want you to turn from sin

  363. and to find ultimate hope and ultimate joy

  364. in the person of Jesus Christ.

  365. That's why I want to beg you this morning

  366. to turn away from false idols that don't really satisfy

  367. and come to the true satisfaction

  368. which is Jesus Christ himself.

  369. Marriage and sex is never going to fulfill you,

  370. but Jesus Christ is at my right hands

  371. of pleasures forevermore.

  372. And so come to Jesus this morning.

  373. Come to Jesus this morning.

  374. Okay, so all of that is creation.

  375. Chapter one, creation.

  376. By design, God designed that marriage

  377. is a picture of unity and diversity.

  378. By design, marriage is a picture

  379. of the selfless, self-giving love of God in us.

  380. And by design, God has pictured

  381. that marriage should reflect his forgiveness

  382. and his grace towards his people.

  383. Okay, chapter two, the fall.

  384. Now, in Genesis chapter three,

  385. which we all, actually chapter three,

  386. which we read this morning,

  387. the world took a dark turn

  388. and Adam and Eve sin against God.

  389. And the way that sin enters the world

  390. is through a lie.

  391. But it's a lie that's big enough

  392. to reframe and reinterpret all of reality.

  393. And to this day, this lie still colors

  394. everything in which we see in the world.

  395. It affects you and it affects me.

  396. Remember, what does Satan say

  397. to Adam and Eve in the garden?

  398. Okay, what is the first question he asks?

  399. He says, what did God say?

  400. Can you eat anything?

  401. And Eve says, God has told us not to eat,

  402. in fact, not to even touch

  403. of this tree in the middle of the garden.

  404. For if we do so, we will die.

  405. Okay, and what does Satan say back to Eve?

  406. Can you remember?

  407. He says, you will not die.

  408. For God told you this, why?

  409. Because God does not want you to be like him.

  410. Okay, so after questioning God's word,

  411. Satan then questions God's character

  412. and his goodness.

  413. He's saying, God is insecure.

  414. He doesn't want you to be like him.

  415. He doesn't want you to know him.

  416. He doesn't want your eyes to be opened

  417. and to see things as they really are.

  418. Satan, in verse six,

  419. it tells us that Adam and Eve buy this lie,

  420. the lie that God is not good,

  421. that God doesn't have your best interests at heart,

  422. and that if you want, you can be like God.

  423. And friends, what Satan was offering humanity

  424. is not just to reflect God's glory,

  425. but actually to own a piece of the glory themselves.

  426. Okay, do you see that?

  427. He says, God doesn't want you to be like him.

  428. Friends, that temptation is the essence

  429. of every other temptation.

  430. And temptation, when Satan comes to us,

  431. is not just a distortion of some petty rule in the Bible,

  432. like we broke rule three, subsection two,

  433. subsection A of the Bible constitution.

  434. When we sin, it's not just breaking some petty rule.

  435. Actually, temptation is a distortion

  436. of the nature and the character of who God is.

  437. It's a distortion of who you are,

  438. what it means to be human,

  439. and it's a distortion of our relationship with God.

  440. You see, when we sin,

  441. it's not just that we've got some black mark

  442. against our name on the school teacher's report.

  443. It actually distorts our view of reality,

  444. and it changes us.

  445. And one of the ways that sin distorts reality

  446. is that we now tend to view our identity

  447. in terms of marriage and sexuality.

  448. Before the fall, we were God's children.

  449. We were made to experience God's love

  450. and to enjoy His love

  451. and to be caught up in His love,

  452. delighting in His glory,

  453. imaging this to the world around us.

  454. But now, because of sin,

  455. we are cut off on the reality of God's love

  456. and His intimacy.

  457. And now we only have the image.

  458. We've got the picture.

  459. We've got the photograph.

  460. But we can't even see or understand the picture properly

  461. because, as Augustine said,

  462. sin causes us to what?

  463. Be turned in on ourselves.

  464. And so now, instead of sex and marriage

  465. being the ultimate expression of God's self-giving love to us,

  466. a picture of how we don't pursue our own interests,

  467. but we pursue the interests of others,

  468. now sex and marriage are viewed as self-validation

  469. for our hurting identity.

  470. Does that make sense?

  471. So God's design for marriage and sexuality is

  472. you pour yourself out to please another.

  473. You give of yourself for well-being

  474. and the benefit of the other.

  475. But now, because sin causes us to turn in on ourselves,

  476. we view relationships and marriage and sexuality as,

  477. how can I please myself?

  478. How can I fulfill myself?

  479. How can I make myself happy at the expense of another?

  480. Friends, the irony and the tragedy of this

  481. is that this makes us even more insecure

  482. and more invalidated than ever.

  483. The more we use people and sexual experiences

  484. to fill the void in our own hearts

  485. and to validate us and affirm us,

  486. actually, the more insecure we become

  487. and the more invalidated we become.

  488. Because no human being was meant to fill

  489. that void in our heart.

  490. In our heart.

  491. It's like drinking salty seawater

  492. to trying to quench the thirst in your body, right?

  493. Not realizing that by drinking that water,

  494. you're actually starving your body

  495. of the liquids that you need.

  496. And so the more thirsty you become,

  497. the more seawater you drink to try and quench that thirst.

  498. And that's what happens when we use sexuality

  499. and marriage and relationships to validate ourselves.

  500. In doing so, we actually cause ourselves

  501. to be more insecure and to feel more invalidated.

  502. And that's why we live in such an overly sexualized world.

  503. Because we're addicted to the drug of self-validation,

  504. not realizing that it actually undermines

  505. the validation that we seek.

  506. And so the fall, the sin,

  507. causes us to be turned in on ourselves

  508. and to now use relationships

  509. rather than to pour ourselves out for relationships.

  510. Well, what does this look like?

  511. Well, the first thing it does

  512. is marriage now has become self-serving

  513. rather than self-giving.

  514. I remember when I first became a pastor

  515. seven or eight years ago,

  516. I used to do a lot of weddings.

  517. And at first I used to tell people,

  518. you can write your own wedding vows, right?

  519. It's your wedding day, you say what you want.

  520. And I thought this was such a good idea

  521. until I quickly realized this was a terrible idea.

  522. And so I quickly stopped that

  523. and I made people say the vows that I wrote for them, okay?

  524. And the reason was because of the terrible nature of those vows.

  525. People would stand up and say things like,

  526. you are the stardust on my magic carpet, right?

  527. Or I promise to be the sunshine on your flower patch, okay?

  528. Or I promise to love you more than I love sushi

  529. or to make your heart sing like the birds in the morning, right?

  530. Friends, that's not a wedding vow.

  531. That's a Valentine's card, okay?

  532. Valentine's Day card.

  533. That's what Disney make movies about.

  534. But a real wedding vow, a marriage vow

  535. is something like I promise to love you.

  536. I promise to serve you.

  537. I promise to put your interests before my own.

  538. I promise to put your desires before my own.

  539. Whether I am comfortable or not,

  540. for better or for worse.

  541. Whether I feel sick or whether I feel healthy.

  542. Whether I have lots of money

  543. or whether I've got no money.

  544. Whether it makes me rich or not.

  545. I promise to pour out my life for you

  546. to help you become the person God's called you to be.

  547. To help you see God's glory.

  548. To help you love Jesus more

  549. so that you can become more like Him.

  550. That's a wedding vow.

  551. But we don't say those vows anymore, right?

  552. We talk about sunshine on our flower patch

  553. and sushi and stardust

  554. and nonsense like that, right?

  555. Why?

  556. Because romance and sex and relationships

  557. have become about us.

  558. About what you can do for me.

  559. And ironically, this actually destroys the intimacy

  560. and the relationship that we actually desire.

  561. When we use somebody else

  562. or we see somebody else's hard to please me

  563. or fulfill my pleasures,

  564. it destroys the trust and the vulnerability

  565. that actually a true intimacy desires

  566. or needs to flourish.

  567. I remember last year

  568. when we were living in Cape Town,

  569. there was a young lady, late 20s,

  570. who was a pretty strong atheist,

  571. didn't believe in God at all,

  572. and became a Christian.

  573. She had a dramatic encounter with God.

  574. One night she goes to bed,

  575. not believing God exists.

  576. The next morning she wakes up,

  577. has this encounter with God,

  578. believes in Jesus,

  579. confesses her sin,

  580. and there in her house on her own

  581. becomes a believer.

  582. And her whole life changed dramatically in one day.

  583. And so a few months later,

  584. I'm talking to her about her conversion

  585. and I'm asking her what happened.

  586. And she said something amazing.

  587. She said,

  588. you know,

  589. I've always lived with my boyfriends

  590. and slept with my boyfriends.

  591. And as much as I love them

  592. and they love me,

  593. at the back of my mind

  594. was always this lingering question.

  595. Do you love me for my body

  596. or do you love me for me?

  597. Do you love me?

  598. Are you in this relationship

  599. because I'm giving myself to you

  600. and I'm pleasing you sexually?

  601. Or are you in this relationship

  602. because you really want to serve me

  603. and are pleased for me?

  604. And friends,

  605. that's what sin does.

  606. When sin causes us

  607. to be turned in on ourselves,

  608. relationships and sexual intimacy

  609. now and pleasure

  610. become about us,

  611. about what my partner can do for me.

  612. And what this means

  613. is that any relationship

  614. that's built on sexual intimacy

  615. and the pleasure of sexual experiences,

  616. rather than a commitment

  617. to serve the other person,

  618. is destined to fail.

  619. Because sexual intimacy and pleasure

  620. is not the essence,

  621. it's the foundation of a relationship.

  622. Selfless giving of yourself

  623. to the other person is.

  624. And that's one of the dangers

  625. of being involved with someone sexually

  626. before your marriage

  627. or cohabitating,

  628. living with someone.

  629. Especially if you're trying to work out,

  630. is this relationship

  631. going to go the distance?

  632. Is this going to work?

  633. Because the pleasure

  634. and the desires

  635. and the height of emotional experiences

  636. that sex produces

  637. gives you a skewed view

  638. of the relationship.

  639. You think,

  640. I so love this person

  641. and they so love me.

  642. We were made for each other.

  643. But it's built

  644. on a shaky foundation.

  645. It's built on a house of sand.

  646. It's a house of sand.

  647. It's a house built on sand.

  648. And it's only a matter of time

  649. before it's destined to fail.

  650. Friends,

  651. in our city,

  652. there are millions

  653. and millions of people

  654. who every day

  655. are buying the lie

  656. that says life

  657. and love

  658. and fulfillment

  659. are found

  660. in having sexual experiences.

  661. But friends,

  662. it's a lie.

  663. It's like drinking

  664. seawater,

  665. thinking it's going

  666. to quench your thirst.

  667. And it's actually

  668. going to dry you up

  669. and leave you more lonely,

  670. more dissatisfied

  671. than ever before.

  672. Secondly,

  673. marriage becomes

  674. about scorekeeping

  675. rather than gracious

  676. self-giving.

  677. I'll do this quickly.

  678. I remember

  679. just before I got married

  680. listening to Dr. Ravi Zacharias

  681. and he said something

  682. and I thought,

  683. speak for yourself, buddy.

  684. That's not going to happen

  685. in my marriage.

  686. Right?

  687. And this is what he said.

  688. When you first get married,

  689. as a guy,

  690. you love serving your wife.

  691. Your wife needs anything

  692. and you jump up

  693. to help her.

  694. Right?

  695. She has a little cough

  696. in the night

  697. and you jump up

  698. and you get a glass

  699. of water for her

  700. and you bring it

  701. to her side.

  702. And five years later,

  703. you hear the kids

  704. crying in the middle

  705. of the night

  706. and you just fast

  707. and you pretend

  708. you fast asleep.

  709. Or you think to yourself,

  710. I got up last time,

  711. I'm pretty sure

  712. it's her turn

  713. this time.

  714. Right?

  715. And I thought,

  716. that's not going

  717. to happen to me.

  718. Friends,

  719. ten years later,

  720. that's exactly

  721. what's happening.

  722. Right?

  723. Love,

  724. I just want to say

  725. I'm so sorry

  726. for all the times

  727. I've pretended

  728. to be asleep.

  729. When sin causes us

  730. to be turned

  731. in on ourselves

  732. and we think of marriage

  733. as a way of self-serving,

  734. not self-giving.

  735. Finally,

  736. let me say this.

  737. Sin causes marriage

  738. or the problem

  739. with this is

  740. it causes us

  741. to misrepresent

  742. God's love.

  743. You see,

  744. by representing

  745. a false view

  746. of God's covenantal love,

  747. we actually tell

  748. the world

  749. that God's love

  750. is something central,

  751. something self-focused,

  752. something that we use

  753. for our own means

  754. rather than

  755. the extravagant love

  756. that it really is.

  757. And unfortunately,

  758. that's exactly

  759. what has happened.

  760. Inside the church

  761. and outside the church,

  762. we view God's love

  763. as something selfish,

  764. something that we view

  765. God's love as

  766. God only loves us

  767. as long as we serve Him.

  768. God only loves us

  769. as long as we come

  770. to the party.

  771. And we've completely

  772. misrepresented

  773. the extravagant,

  774. radically generous,

  775. always and forever,

  776. incessant,

  777. never-ending

  778. love that God's love

  779. really is.

  780. And for those of us

  781. that are not Christians

  782. this morning,

  783. I want to just say

  784. that maybe one of the reasons

  785. why you're not a Christian

  786. is because you're interested

  787. in the person of Jesus

  788. but as you've looked

  789. at His followers,

  790. their lives

  791. and especially

  792. our sexual lives

  793. and our relationship lives

  794. don't represent

  795. anything different

  796. from the world.

  797. And maybe we've represented

  798. to you that God's love

  799. is something sensual

  800. and self-seeking.

  801. And friends,

  802. if that's you,

  803. I want to say

  804. we are so sorry.

  805. I want to say

  806. our testimony

  807. is not true.

  808. We have misrepresented

  809. the profundity

  810. of God's love.

  811. Don't look at our lives

  812. and our selfishness

  813. and think that

  814. that's what God is like.

  815. God's love

  816. is exceedingly abundantly

  817. far more profound

  818. than that.

  819. Can I ask you

  820. to forgive us

  821. and forgive us

  822. for our self-centeredness.

  823. Come and know Jesus.

  824. He's far better

  825. than we'll ever represent.

  826. So all of this

  827. is the four.

  828. Okay?

  829. God designed us

  830. to represent Him

  831. and image Him.

  832. God designed that

  833. marriage and sexuality

  834. is a picture

  835. of the selfless,

  836. self-giving love

  837. and yet the sin

  838. caused us

  839. to be turned in ourselves

  840. and now we use

  841. marriage and relationships

  842. to serve ourselves

  843. rather than serve the other.

  844. The question is

  845. is there any hope?

  846. Well, chapter 3,

  847. redemption.

  848. At the end of Genesis

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  849. chapter 3

  850. and onwards

  851. for the rest of the Bible,

  852. the story of the Bible

  853. is the consequences of sin,

  854. the consequences of the fall,

  855. but it's God's redeeming love

  856. and the great rescue plan

  857. that God goes on

  858. to redeem us

  859. from the fall.

  860. You see,

  861. the effects of sin

  862. are far-reaching.

  863. They affect every area

  864. of our life.

  865. They affect our finances.

  866. They affect our marriages.

  867. They affect our singleness.

  868. They affect our sexuality.

  869. They affect our work life.

  870. Sin causes us

  871. to be turned in on ourselves

  872. and affects every area

  873. of our lives.

  874. But Jesus

  875. did far more

  876. than just come

  877. and forgive us

  878. of one or two

  879. individual sins.

  880. Jesus came to redeem us

  881. and to heal

  882. the brokenness

  883. that is a result of sin.

  884. Jesus came to reverse

  885. the effects

  886. of the fall

  887. from creation.

  888. And he starts off

  889. by redeeming

  890. and rescuing our hearts.

  891. And the way that Jesus

  892. in the gospel

  893. gives us hope

  894. in the midst of our

  895. broken and hurting world

  896. is threefold.

  897. Firstly,

  898. Jesus comes

  899. and he gives you

  900. a new name

  901. and he gives you

  902. a new identity.

  903. So in the Bible,

  904. whenever one of God's people

  905. has a dramatic

  906. encounter with God,

  907. God gives them

  908. a new name, right?

  909. Think Abram

  910. becomes Abraham.

  911. Think Jacob,

  912. which means the cheat,

  913. becomes Israel,

  914. which means one

  915. who has wrestled

  916. with God.

  917. Simon,

  918. which means little stone,

  919. becomes Peter,

  920. the rock.

  921. And of course,

  922. Saul,

  923. the guy who wanted

  924. to kill all the Christians,

  925. meets Jesus

  926. and becomes renamed

  927. Paul.

  928. Now,

  929. in Isaiah chapter 62,

    Isaiah 62 chapter mention

  930. there's an amazing passage

  931. about how

  932. when God

  933. comes to his people

  934. to rescue

  935. and redeem

  936. and heal them

  937. and restore them,

  938. he renames them.

  939. Look at what

  940. Isaiah chapter 62

    Isaiah 62 chapter mention

  941. says.

  942. He says,

  943. when I come

  944. and meet you,

  945. the nations

  946. will see your righteousness,

  947. all the kings

  948. of the earth

  949. will see your glory

  950. and you will be called

  951. by a new name

  952. and the name

  953. that the Lord

  954. will give you,

  955. a name that the Lord

  956. will give you.

  957. You will no longer

  958. be called forsaken,

  959. you will now be called

  960. my delightful one.

  961. For just as the bridegroom

  962. rejoices over his bride,

  963. so the Lord your God

  964. will rejoice over you.

  965. Friends,

  966. where sin causes us

  967. to be turned in

  968. on ourselves

  969. and because of the

  970. powerful bonding

  971. nature of sex,

  972. the distortion

  973. that sin causes

  974. is that it

  975. takes God's good gift

  976. and it turns it

  977. into a tool

  978. for much pain

  979. and much hurt.

  980. But Jesus Christ

  981. came to dismantle

  982. the lie

  983. that we believed

  984. in the garden

  985. and he comes

  986. and he speaks

  987. a true and a better

  988. word for us.

  989. He dismantles

  990. the lie that says

  991. God is not good

  992. and you can't trust him.

  993. He dismantles

  994. the lie that says

  995. God is only

  996. looking after himself

  997. and he dismantles

  998. the lie that says

  999. you can be your own God

  1000. and Jesus Christ

  1001. comes and he

  1002. tells us

  1003. that the self-worth

  1004. and the validation

  1005. that we look for

  1006. as humans

  1007. is not found

  1008. horizontally.

  1009. It's not found

  1010. in our spouse

  1011. or in society

  1012. or what people

  1013. think of us.

  1014. It's not found

  1015. in our sex appeal.

  1016. It's not found

  1017. in the affirmation

  1018. or the generosity

  1019. of even a spouse's wife.

  1020. Jesus Christ

  1021. comes and tells us

  1022. that our affirmation

  1023. and identity

  1024. is found

  1025. in who we are

  1026. in Christ

  1027. and what Christ

  1028. says about us.

  1029. It's found

  1030. in delighting

  1031. in Christ

  1032. and Christ's

  1033. delight in us.

  1034. Friends,

  1035. Jesus comes

1036. to those who trust him

  1037. and he promises

1038. to be a redeeming lover.

  1039. He promises

  1040. to be a lover

  1041. that rescues us

  1042. out of our own

  1043. sinfulness

  1044. and to restore us

1045. and to make us new.

  1046. And Jesus comes

  1047. and he gives us

  1048. a new name.

  1049. He gives us

  1050. a new identity.

  1051. Friends,

  1052. where sin

  1053. and the fall

  1054. of the world

  1055. tells you

1056. that you are a nobody,

  1057. Jesus comes

  1058. and he calls you

  1059. his beloved.

  1060. Friends,

  1061. where sin

  1062. and brokenness

  1063. and the effects

  1064. of the world

  1065. tell you

  1066. that you are ordinary

  1067. and unloved,

  1068. Jesus says,

  1069. I chose you

  1070. before the foundation

  1071. of the world

  1072. to set my love

  1073. upon you.

  1074. Friends,

  1075. where sin

  1076. and the brokenness

  1077. of the world

  1078. calls you shamed

  1079. and dirty

  1080. and used,

  1081. Jesus calls you

  1082. cleansed

  1083. and righteous

  1084. in his sight

1085. if you are in Jesus.

  1086. Friends,

  1087. where sin

  1088. and the brokenness

  1089. and the fall

  1090. of the world

  1091. tell you

  1092. that your worth

  1093. and your identity

  1094. are found

  1095. in what men

  1096. think of you

  1097. or what women

  1098. think of you,

  1099. Christ says,

  1100. you are his

  1101. and he delights

  1102. in you.

  1103. And friends,

  1104. the love of Jesus

  1105. is so steady

1106. and it's so rock solid

  1107. because he doesn't

  1108. love you

1109. because of what he sees

  1110. in your heart,

  1111. he loves you

1112. because of what he sees

  1113. in his heart.

  1114. And that is unshakable.

1115. It's not going to change.

  1116. Jesus doesn't love us

  1117. because of the goodness

  1118. he sees in us

1119. but because of the overflow

  1120. of the love

  1121. in his own heart

  1122. towards us.

1123. And so Jesus gives us

  1124. a new name

  1125. and he gives you

  1126. a new identity.

1127. Second thing he gives you

  1128. is this.

1129. He gives you a new nature.

  1130. He actually changes us

  1131. from the inside.

  1132. The book of Colossians

  1133. is all about

  1134. this new identity

  1135. that God gives us

  1136. when we're united

  1137. with Christ.

  1138. And Paul tells

  1139. these new Christians

  1140. in Colossians

  1141. in Colossians

  1142. that their new self,

  1143. their new identity

  1144. is being renewed

  1145. in knowledge

  1146. after the image

  1147. of its creator.

1148. Okay, so think about that.

  1149. He says,

1150. when you come to Christ

  1151. you're being renewed

  1152. in knowledge,

  1153. understanding

  1154. after the image

  1155. of your creator.

  1156. In other words,

  1157. as the gospel

  1158. gets deeper

  1159. into our heads,

  1160. as in our hearts

  1161. we understand more

  1162. of who Jesus is,

  1163. how glorious he is,

  1164. what he's done

  1165. on the cross

  1166. and the reversing

  1167. effects of sin,

  1168. God actually starts

  1169. to change us

  1170. on the inside

  1171. to make us more

  1172. like him.

  1173. Okay,

  1174. in 2 Corinthians

1175. he says it like this.

  1176. He says,

  1177. a Christian is someone

  1178. who's being changed

  1179. into the likeness

  1180. or the image

  1181. of God.

  1182. Now remember

  1183. in Genesis chapter 1

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  1184. what did God say?

  1185. He said,

  1186. let us make mankind

  1187. in our image

  1188. or our likeness.

  1189. Okay,

  1190. our image

  1191. and our likeness.

  1192. Now in Corinthians

  1193. Paul writes,

  1194. a Christian

  1195. is someone

  1196. who's encountered

  1197. Jesus

  1198. and is being changed

  1199. in the image

  1200. and the likeness

  1201. of God.

  1202. In other words,

  1203. a Christian

  1204. is somebody

  1205. who's encountered

  1206. God

  1207. and God starts

  1208. to reverse

  1209. the effects of sin

  1210. and make us

  1211. once again

  1212. like he designed us

  1213. in the garden

  1214. of Eden.

  1215. And he's changing us

  1216. from one degree

  1217. of glory

  1218. to another.

  1219. So friends,

  1220. a Christian

  1221. is someone

  1222. who because

  1223. of the supernatural

  1224. experiential work

  1225. of God

  1226. in our hearts

  1227. is someone

  1228. who's becoming

  1229. more secure

  1230. in God's love,

  1231. more secure

  1232. in the gospel

  1233. and as a result

  1234. is becoming

  1235. more like Jesus

  1236. in life,

  1237. in love,

  1238. in character,

  1239. identity

  1240. and in purpose.

  1241. Friends,

  1242. the good news

  1243. of Jesus

  1244. is he didn't

  1245. just come and say,

  1246. oh I see

  1247. you've broken

  1248. another one

  1249. of the rules,

  1250. I'll forgive you

  1251. this time

1252. but let me help you

  1253. not to break

  1254. the rules again.

  1255. Friends,

  1256. Jesus comes

  1257. and he takes out

  1258. our heart of stone

  1259. which is self-centered

  1260. and self-seeking

  1261. and he gives us

  1262. a new heart

  1263. after his own nature

  1264. and his own character,

1265. a heart which resembles him

  1266. and he gives us

  1267. a new disposition

  1268. and he gives us

  1269. the Holy Spirit

1270. to live inside of us

  1271. and he empowers us

  1272. to say no

  1273. to self-centeredness,

  1274. to say no

  1275. to the lie

  1276. of the devil

  1277. and to say yes

  1278. to Jesus

  1279. and to say yes

  1280. to becoming

  1281. more like him.

  1282. And he therefore

  1283. sets us free

  1284. from the destructive

  1285. patterns of behavior

  1286. which have marked

1287. so many of our lives.

  1288. Friends,

  1289. the road that Christ

  1290. calls us to walk

  1291. is a long,

  1292. slow,

  1293. messy road

  1294. of becoming

  1295. more like Jesus.

  1296. And sometimes

  1297. there's ups

  1298. and sometimes

  1299. there's downs.

  1300. Sometimes there's victory

  1301. and we overcome sin

  1302. and sometimes

  1303. there's defeats.

  1304. Sometimes there's good moments,

  1305. sometimes there's painful moments.

1306. But for those of us

  1307. who know Christ,

  1308. it's a road of slowly,

  1309. steadily

  1310. becoming more like him.

  1311. God changes our nature

1312. to become more like him.

  1313. And friends,

1314. that is unbelievably good news.

  1315. Remember Chris shared

  1316. the story last week

1317. of a friend of his

  1318. who said,

1319. I wish I could become like you

  1320. but I'm addicted

  1321. to my own desires.

  1322. Friends,

  1323. Jesus changes our desires.

1324. He makes us more like him.

  1325. He sets us free.

1326. Some of us want to be free

  1327. from pornography

1328. and we cannot do it

  1329. on our own.

1330. Jesus comes to change us

  1331. and our desires

  1332. and our addictions.

  1333. He sets us free.

1334. Jesus gives us a new nature.

1335. And then the last thing is this.

1336. He gives us hope for sinners.

  1337. Friends,

  1338. some of us,

  1339. if we're honest,

  1340. have such a stained

  1341. and a checkered past

1342. and a history of relationships

1343. that we cannot bear the thought

  1344. of anybody finding out

  1345. what we've done.

  1346. And some of us

  1347. maybe here this morning

  1348. we think,

1349. if anybody in this room

1350. found out what I've done,

  1351. where I've been,

  1352. who I've been with,

1353. you would kick me out

1354. of this church straight away.

  1355. Friends,

1356. I'm here to tell you this morning

1357. that the message of the gospel

1358. is that you are far worse

1359. than you think you are.

  1360. And your situation

  1361. is far more hopeless

1362. than you think it is.

1363. And you are far more lost

1364. than you actually think you are.

1365. But I'm also here to tell you

1366. that what's true of you

  1367. is true of everyone

  1368. in this room.

  1369. That every single person

  1370. in this room

  1371. is a sinner

  1372. who has fallen short

  1373. of God's astounding glory

  1374. and therefore stands condemned.

  1375. But I'm also here

  1376. to tell you

  1377. that the wonderful,

  1378. extravagant good news

1379. of Jesus on the cross

1380. is that if you are in Christ,

  1381. you are extravagantly loved

  1382. and chosen by God

  1383. before the world

  1384. was even made.

1385. Before you were even conceived

  1386. in your mother's womb.

1387. If you are in Christ,

  1388. God chose you

1389. to pour His love out upon you.

1390. Jesus hung on the cross for you

  1391. and as He died,

  1392. He said,

1393. the debt has been paid in full.

1394. That is the hope of the gospel.

  1395. That though the situation

1396. is worse than we think it is,

  1397. it's far more better

1398. than we will ever think it is

  1399. because of Jesus.

  1400. Friends,

  1401. I don't know what you've done,

1402. but if you come to Christ

  1403. in faith and repentance,

  1404. the blood of Jesus

1405. which was shed on the cross

1406. for you and for me

  1407. has a final

  1408. and a better word

  1409. over our sin.

1410. And it stills the accusations

  1411. of the devil.

1412. And when the devil comes

1413. and lies and accuses you,

  1414. there's a better word

  1415. that says,

  1416. not guilty

  1417. because my blood

  1418. has been shed.

  1419. That is the hope

  1420. of the gospel.

  1421. This is Christ's redemption,

  1422. chapter three.

  1423. Finally,

  1424. chapter four,

  1425. the consummation.

1426. We come out to close.

  1427. The final chapter

  1428. of the Bible

  1429. is called the consummation,

  1430. which is ironic

  1431. because we think of

  1432. consummating a wedding,

  1433. right?

  1434. Yes,

  1435. in some ways,

1436. sex is an amazing picture

  1437. of what heaven

1438. will one day be like.

  1439. A blissful union

  1440. of God's people

  1441. and God

  1442. for all eternity.

  1443. Marriage and sex

  1444. in some ways

  1445. in our world

  1446. is a faded

  1447. black and white picture

  1448. of the glories

  1449. of heaven

  1450. and what it's going

  1451. to be like.

  1452. That those who are

  1453. in Christ,

  1454. this blissful,

  1455. intimate relationship

  1456. between us

  1457. and God

  1458. for all eternity.

  1459. Revelation 21

  1460. says that

  1461. when Christ comes,

  1462. he will bring

  1463. his bride

  1464. back to himself

  1465. for the house

  1466. that he's been

  1467. preparing for us.

  1468. Think of how

  1469. every Disney movie

  1470. ends, right?

  1471. How does every

  1472. fairy tale story end?

  1473. And they lived

  1474. happily ever after.

  1475. Friends,

1476. there's one fairy tale story

1477. which is not a fairy tale.

  1478. We really will live

  1479. with our spouse,

1480. the lover of our souls,

  1481. happily ever after

  1482. in all eternity

  1483. with him.

  1484. Friends,

  1485. in this lifetime

  1486. you may never

  1487. get married.

  1488. Maybe you've been

  1489. married and you've

  1490. suffered a difficult

  1491. marriage.

  1492. Maybe you've suffered

1493. the trauma of a marriage

  1494. coming undone.

  1495. Maybe you've been

  1496. in an abusive marriage.

  1497. Maybe you've been

  1498. in a loveless marriage.

  1499. Maybe you've been

  1500. in a marriage

  1501. where your spouse

  1502. has spoken words

  1503. of you that have

  1504. wounded so deeply.

  1505. Friends,

  1506. regardless of who

  1507. you are today,

1508. if you trust in Christ

  1509. one day,

  1510. very, very soon,

  1511. there is coming

  1512. the perfect husband,

  1513. the perfect spouse

  1514. who will bring you

  1515. back to himself,

  1516. who will love you

  1517. more fully

  1518. and more completely

  1519. and more tenderly

  1520. than any human being

  1521. could ever.

  1522. Who will love you

  1523. so deeply

1524. that you'll get to enjoy

  1525. the reality

  1526. of the perfect marriage.

  1527. Not just a copy

1528. of it here on earth.

  1529. Not just a faded

  1530. black and white image.

  1531. The reality,

  1532. the real thing

  1533. for all time

  1534. in all perfection.

  1535. Happily ever after.

  1536. And friends,

  1537. that's why our hope

  1538. is not in marriage.

1539. Our hope is not in sex.

1540. Our hope is not in

  1541. finding the perfect spouse,

  1542. having the perfect marriage,

1543. having the perfect sex life

  1544. or being married.

1545. Our hope is in Jesus Christ

1546. who died on the cross.

1547. Our hope is in the one

  1548. who came to reverse

  1549. the effects of sin

  1550. and the fall.

1551. Our hope is in the one

  1552. who has chosen us

  1553. in him

  1554. and is calling us

  1555. back to himself.

1556. Our hope is in the person

1557. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

1558. And so on that note,

  1559. let's pray.

  1560. Lord Jesus Christ,

  1561. oh how desperately

  1562. we need you.

1563. God, we need you today

  1564. to affirm us

  1565. and to validate us.

1566. We need you today, God,

  1567. to counter the lies

  1568. of the devil,

  1569. who tells us

1570. that you are not good

1571. and you are not trustworthy,

  1572. who tell us

  1573. that we can own

1574. a piece of our own glory

  1575. if only we'll

  1576. follow our own desires.

  1577. Oh God,

  1578. won't you come

  1579. and speak a true

  1580. and better word

  1581. to our hearts?

  1582. God, won't you come

  1583. and heal

  1584. and restore

  1585. where sin has

  1586. hurt us

  1587. and destroyed us?

  1588. Jesus,

  1589. won't you come

  1590. and open our eyes

  1591. to see how glorious

  1592. you are?

  1593. God, we do pray

  1594. for healing

  1595. and restoration

  1596. where we've been hurt.

  1597. We do pray

  1598. for a miracle, God.

  1599. God, we do pray

  1600. that you come

  1601. and fill the longings

  1602. of our hearts,

  1603. those that are married

1604. and those that are not married,

1605. those that are enjoying marriage

1606. and those for whom marriage

  1607. is difficult.

1608. For every one of us,

1609. Christ, come and be first

1610. in our hearts, we pray.

  1611. Come and be center.

  1612. Jesus, come and pour

  1613. your transcendent glory

  1614. into our hearts

  1615. and open our eyes

  1616. to see you

  1617. and to love you.

  1618. Come and draw us

  1619. closer to yourself,

  1620. we pray.
