  1. Father, we come to worship you and to lift up your name.

  2. We come to say, God, that there's no one like you in all the earth, in all creation.

  3. You stand alone, God. You are the one true God.

  4. Father, when all creation falls away and fades away,

  5. God, when the end of the world as we understand it has come,

  6. God, you will still be eternally existing.

  7. You will still be worshipped, God, by those that you have created.

  8. God, you are the one true eternal God, and there's no one like you.

  9. There's no one as majestic as you. There's no one as tender as you.

  10. There's no one as strong and glorious as you.

  11. There's none as merciful and gracious.

  12. There's none so holy and set apart like you.

  13. God, there's none so loving and welcoming.

  14. God, we worship you this morning.

  15. We come to align our hearts with what is true, with who you are.

  16. Father, this morning as we pray for various churches in our city,

  17. we want to pray for Ebsen and Trophina at Hope for All Church.

  18. God, we really want to lift Ebsen's health before you this morning.

  19. This young man that has planted a church, God, on the Kailun side.

  20. Father, we know that he's gone through health challenges, and you know everything.

  21. You know things better than we do.

  22. We lift him up before you, and we ask, God, won't you be gracious?

  23. We pray for restoration.

  24. We pray for healing.

  25. We pray strengthen his body, Lord.

  26. We pray for a full and a speedy recovery.

  27. We pray for him to be back preaching soon, Lord God.

  28. God, we pray for their children and their children's health, God,

  29. and the challenges that their children have faced health-wise.

  30. Father, we pray for that church.

  31. We pray for Hope for All Church, that leaders will emerge,

  32. for there to be fruit, for numbers to increase, for people to get saved.

  33. Pray for the Holy Spirit to be powerfully at work at Hope for All Church.

  34. We really do lift up our brothers and sisters there before you this morning.

  35. We stand with them.

  36. And so, God, just as we sang, may your name be lifted up,

  37. we pray not only in Watermark, but in Hong Kong.

  38. May your name be lifted up, God.

  39. And do so in that church, we pray.

  40. Fathers, we think of our city this morning.

  41. We pray for the orphans.

  42. We pray for the orphan workers in our city.

  43. We pray for Mother's Choice and other organizations like that that work with orphans.

  44. God, we pray for children that are awaiting adoption in homes.

  45. God, we pray, won't you draw near to them, God.

  46. Won't you flood their hearts with your love, Lord God.

  47. We pray for those families that are in the process, God, of waiting adoption.

  48. God, won't you match the right children to the right families, Lord.

  49. Pray, God, for Christians, God, that are obeying your command

  50. to look after widows and orphans, Lord God.

  51. We pray for financial support and blessing for those organizations.

  52. And we ask, God, that your church really will be a light in our city, in this area, God.

  53. That young children that are without parents and without families

  54. will find families and find homes, God.

  55. God, help us as Christians to know what to do and how to respond, Lord.

  56. Give us courage, we pray.

  57. Father, pray for Watermark, for opportunities to witness and to share our faith, God.

  58. We pray, God, for conversations to start.

  59. We pray that as a church we'll be more courageous.

  60. We pray for people to come to know you, people that are not Christians,

  61. to come to find the wonder of Jesus and to find grace, Lord God.

  62. We pray for you, Holy Spirit, to draw people closer to yourself.

  63. We pray for those in our midst that are starting to have conversations

  64. with neighbors and colleagues and friends and family.

  65. Oh, God, won't you be with us, we pray, God.

  66. We pray the gospel go forward in Hong Kong.

  67. And then, God, lastly, we pray for the Holy Spirit to be deeply at work in our church.

  68. God, we pray not so much for the blessings of the Spirit,

  69. but for you, Holy Spirit, yourself.

  70. We so often feel your absence.

  71. We find ourselves acting by our own spirit, our own initiative.

  72. God, even this week in my own preparation, I confess I've been so self-reliant,

  73. not reliant on you.

  74. Oh, God, we need you.

  75. Save us from being content with only a little measure of the Spirit, God.

  76. Make us uncomfortable with how little we walk with you.

  77. And teach us to know the fullness of your Spirit, we pray.

  78. We pray these things in your wonderful name.

  79. Amen.

  80. Amen.

  81. Let's listen to God's Word being read to us this morning.

  82. The scripture reading comes from Matthew 4.

  83. Please follow along.

  84. Your bulletins are on the screen.

  85. Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

  86. And after fasting 40 days and 40 nights, he was hungry.

  87. And the tempter came and said to him,

  88. If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.

  89. But he answered,

  90. It is written,

  91. Men shall not live by bread alone,

  92. but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.

  93. Then the devil took him to the holy city

  94. and set him on the pinnacle of the temple

  95. and said to him,

  96. If you are the Son of God,

  97. throw yourself down,

  98. for it is written,

  99. He will command his angels concerning you,

  100. and on their hands they will bear you up,

  101. lest you strike your foot against stone.

  102. Jesus said to him,

  103. Again it is written,

  104. You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.

  105. Again the devil took him to a very high mountain

  106. and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.

  107. And he said to him,

  108. All these I will give you,

  109. if you will fall down and worship me.

  110. Then Jesus said to him,

  111. Be gone, Satan,

  112. for it is written,

  113. You shall worship the Lord your God,

  114. and him only shall you serve.

  115. Then the devil left him,

  116. and behold,

  117. angels came and were ministering to him.

  118. This is the word of God.

  119. Great, thank you.

  120. Echo.

  121. Okay, well,

  122. this morning we are looking at this

  123. fairly well-known passage of Scripture,

  124. the temptations of Jesus.

  125. And we do so

  126. as we continue to work through the book of Matthew,

  127. Matthew's Gospel.

  128. Matthew's Gospel is all about Jesus,

  129. the King,

  130. and His Kingdom.

  131. And it's a book about the upside-down kingdom of Jesus.

  132. Jesus came to inaugurate His kingdom,

  133. but it's a kingdom which is so different

  134. to the kingdoms of this world.

  135. It is a kingdom which is true.

  136. It is a kingdom which is eternal,

  137. and its king is the one true king.

  138. Now, last week,

  139. we saw just before this,

  140. the passage that precedes this

  141. is Jesus getting baptized.

  142. And He gets baptized by John the Baptist,

  143. which was an unusual event.

  144. It wasn't what John was expecting.

  145. And yet,

  146. at the end of this,

  147. Jesus gets baptized.

  148. He comes out of the water.

  149. The heavens are opened.

  150. The Holy Spirit descends upon Him.

  151. And a voice is heard.

  152. Jesus hears this voice.

  153. And it's the voice of His Father.

  154. And it's the voice that says,

  155. This is my Son,

  156. with whom I'm well pleased.

  157. And as the Father does that,

  158. He's affirming Jesus and His calling.

  159. He's affirming Him as the Messiah King,

  160. the one before whom one day

  161. every nation will bow down,

  162. all people will bow down.

  163. But He's also affirming Him

  164. as the suffering servant.

  165. He's saying,

  166. One day all nations will bow down before you,

  167. but first you will go to the cross.

  168. And so,

  169. just having encountered this

  170. out-of-this-world experience,

  171. the Holy Spirit coming down,

  172. this voice in the heavens,

  173. this commissioning moment,

  174. you'd expect that the next thing that happens

  175. is Jesus gets on His horse and says,

  176. Right, now's the time to bring in the kingdom.

  177. Now's the time to get on the throne.

  178. Now's the time to throw that victory party,

  179. to nominate my cabinet,

  180. announce my key positions in government.

  181. Let's go.

  182. But He doesn't.

  183. He does something very unexpected.

  184. The next thing that happens

  185. is He gets led into the wilderness

  186. for a time of testing.

  187. The word there, testing,

  188. could be temptation or testing.

  189. And here's the Messiah King,

  190. the Savior of the world.

  191. Jesus is called to be the one true King,

  192. and His call and His mandate

  193. and His commissioning

  194. as Son of God,

  195. as Messiah King,

  196. as suffering servant,

  197. is put to the test.

  198. Now, right up front,

  199. or let's actually read the first verse.

  200. Look at verse 1 with me

  201. in Matthew chapter 4.

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  202. It says this,

  203. Then Jesus was led up by the Holy Spirit

  204. into the wilderness

  205. to be tempted

  206. or to be tested by the devil.

  207. Now, straight away,

  208. we learn two things here.

  209. First thing is this,

  210. it's worth noting

  211. that what happens to Jesus here

  212. is very often the pattern

  213. for what happens with His followers.

  214. Very often,

  215. those of us that are followers of Jesus

  216. have some kind of spiritual high,

  217. or maybe you make a bold decision

  218. to a step of obedience

  219. or a step of faith.

  220. You decide to follow Jesus.

  221. Maybe you decide

  222. that you're going to start witnessing

  223. to a neighbor at work

  224. or a colleague or a friend.

  225. Maybe you decide to step up

  226. into some position of leadership,

  227. or you take a step

  228. of great faith and obedience,

  229. and you'd expect

  230. that the next season after that,

  231. after saying,

  232. Okay, God,

  233. I'm willing to trust you,

  234. that God will pour His Holy Spirit

  235. upon you,

  236. and the next season

  237. is one of ease and comfort.

  238. God carrying you along

  239. with His Holy Spirit.

  240. But actually,

  241. what happens is what?

  242. Very often,

  243. the life of followers of Jesus,

  244. as we say,

  245. Okay, God,

  246. I'll trust you,

  247. that call

  248. is then tested.

  249. We go straight into a season

  250. of testing that call.

  251. We see this with Adam and Eve

  252. in the Garden of Eden.

  253. God commissions them

  254. as His agents,

  255. image bearers of God,

  256. and what happens next?

  257. Satan comes along

  258. and says,

  259. Huh,

  260. let's just talk about that.

  261. Has God really asked you to do this?

  262. Has God really said that?

  263. We'll think of the people of God

  264. in the Old Testament.

  265. They are delivered dramatically

  266. out of Egypt.

  267. The Passover lamb is sacrificed.

  268. God dramatically saves them.

  269. There are signs and wonders.

  270. They get to the Red Sea.

  271. They're in trouble.

  272. The Red Sea opens.

  273. They walk through,

  274. and as they enter

  275. the other side,

  276. they're about to enter

  277. the promised land,

  278. what happens?

  279. They experience a season

  280. of testing.

  281. And they test it

  282. in the wilderness,

  283. and they experience

  284. some challenges.

  285. Will they trust God

  286. to feed them

  287. and give them what they need,

  288. or will they trust

  289. their own devices?

  290. Will they trust God

  291. to look after them

  292. and protect them,

  293. or will they take matters

  294. into their own hands?

  295. Will they love and serve

  296. and worship Yahweh,

  297. the one true God,

  298. or will they start

  299. worshiping the gods

  300. of the nations around them?

  301. And friends,

  302. this is true for the life

  303. that Christ follows well.

  304. You come with some

  305. spiritual high,

  306. you've just seen God

  307. work dramatically,

  308. God has done

  309. something spectacular,

  310. and the next thing,

  311. Satan comes up,

  312. and he sidles up next to you,

  313. and he starts asking you questions,

  314. filling your mind

  315. with doubt,

  316. or maybe putting

  317. half-truths

  318. into your mind.

  319. Maybe for those of you

  320. that are new Christians,

  321. this has been your experience.

  322. When you first become

  323. a follower of Jesus,

  324. you decide,

  325. okay Christ,

  326. have your way in my life.

  327. You can have it all of me.

  328. And the first six months

  329. are just wonderful.

  330. It feels like you've come home.

  331. It feels like you've finally found

  332. what your heart has been longing

  333. for all your life.

  334. It feels like you've found

  335. a family,

  336. and the first six months

  337. are just wonderful.

  338. And then what happens?

  339. Suddenly you have questions,

  340. and you have doubts,

  341. and you wonder,

  342. is this thing true?

  343. Maybe it was just

  344. a psychological phenomenon.

  345. Maybe I was just emotional

  346. at the time.

  347. What's happening in that time?

  348. I've seen it time and time again.

  349. Your call to follow Jesus

  350. is being tested.

  351. Your newfound identity

  352. as a Christ follower

  353. is being tested.

  354. Your obedience to Jesus

  355. is being tested,

  356. just like 1 Peter says.

  357. He says our faith

  358. gets passed through the fire

  359. just like gold

  360. is passed through the fire

  361. to test the genuineness of it.

  362. And that's what's happening

  363. to Jesus here.

  364. He gets baptized,

  365. the heavens are open,

  366. the Holy Spirit comes upon him,

  367. the voice of God

  368. affirms him

  369. as the Messiah King,

  370. and what happens?

  371. The same Spirit

  372. that anoints him

  373. two verses before

  374. now leads him

  375. into the wilderness

  376. for a time of testing.

  377. But,

  378. it's not God

  379. who does the temptation.

  380. Who causes the temptation?

  381. What does it say?

  382. It's the devil, right?

  383. Look at what it says.

  384. Jesus was led

  385. by the Spirit

  386. into the wilderness

  387. to be tempted

  388. by the devil.

  389. And there's the second lesson

  390. we learn.

  391. And this is a two-fold lesson.

  392. On the one hand,

  393. we mustn't blame God

  394. for temptation.

  395. Temptation to sin

  396. and sin itself

  397. is always repulsive to God.

  398. It's contrary

  399. to His holiness.

  400. And so,

  401. when we face temptation,

  402. we don't say,

  403. oh, well, God's, you know,

  404. the one that's causing me

  405. to be tempted.

  406. But at the same time,

  407. we mustn't credit the devil

  408. as if he is equal to God

  409. and yet just opposite.

  410. In other words,

  411. God doesn't cause temptation,

  412. but He does allow it

  413. to come our way.

  414. The devil's not equal to God,

  415. but just opposite.

  416. Even what the devil does

  417. is within the bounds

  418. of what God permits.

  419. Now, I understand

  420. that this is a mystery

  421. to some extent,

  422. and it's not always

  423. that easy to understand.

  424. But when I'm tempted

  425. to sin,

  426. when I'm tempted

  427. to indulge myself,

  428. when I'm tempted

  429. to hold a grudge

  430. against someone else,

  431. that's not God tempting me.

  432. That's my own sinful heart.

  433. That's the devil

  434. at work inside of me.

  435. And yet,

  436. I take great comfort

  437. in the fact that God says,

  438. even the temptation

  439. I face is not,

  440. or God never allows me

  441. to be tempted

  442. beyond what I can bear.

  443. Even my own temptation,

  444. God has allowed

  445. and He knows what's going on

  446. and He's carrying me

  447. and He's saying,

  448. Kevin, my grace

  449. is sufficient for you

  450. in the time.

  451. Do you see that?

  452. Jesus is led

  453. into the wilderness

  454. by the Spirit,

  455. and yet,

  456. it's the devil

  457. that comes

  458. and tempts Him.

  459. Now,

  460. let's dive into

  461. these temptations

  462. and see what they are

  463. all about.

  464. What's happening here?

  465. So,

  466. look at verse 2

  467. with me.

  468. It says this,

  469. after fasting

  470. for 40 days

  471. and 40 nights,

  472. Jesus was hungry.

  473. Just possibly

  474. a little bit hungry.

  475. Okay,

  476. you and I

  477. would also be hungry

  478. after 40 days

  479. of no food.

  480. The tempter came to Him

  481. and said to Him,

  482. if you are the Son of God,

  483. why don't you command

  484. these stones

  485. to turn into bread

  486. and satisfy your hunger?

  487. Now,

  488. let's think

  489. what's going on here.

  490. Who here thinks

  491. that eating bread

  492. is sinful?

  493. Who here thinks

  494. that eating bread

  495. when you're hungry

  496. is wrong?

  497. No,

  498. I don't think so either.

  499. So,

  500. what's going on here?

  501. What's this temptation about?

  502. Why is this a temptation

  503. to say,

  504. come on,

  505. you're hungry,

  506. eat some bread?

  507. Well,

  508. look at first

  509. what He says.

  510. He says,

  511. Jesus,

  512. if you are the Son of God.

  513. Now,

  514. the devil is not here

  515. actually questioning Jesus.

  516. He's not saying,

  517. listen,

  518. I don't think you really

  519. are who you say you are.

  520. If you are,

  521. prove it to me.

  522. That's not what He's saying.

  523. All the commentators tell us

  524. the grammar here

  525. is such that

  526. the devil is saying,

  527. listen,

  528. if,

  529. as is the case,

  530. you're the Son of God,

  531. since you are the Son of God,

  532. well,

  533. that means something.

  534. It means that

  535. you are entitled

  536. to ABC.

  537. It means that

  538. you can use your powers

  539. as the Son of God

  540. to do X,

  541. Y,

  542. Z.

  543. Jesus,

  544. since you're the Son of God,

  545. why don't you just

  546. indulge your flesh

  547. a little bit

  548. and please yourself?

  549. And so what He's saying here

  550. is He's coming up to Jesus

  551. and saying,

  552. Jesus,

  553. since you're the Son of God,

  554. since you have this

  555. special privilege,

  556. why don't you use

  557. your privileges?

  558. Why don't you,

  559. you're entitled

  560. to satisfy your own desires,

  561. but satisfy them

  562. in your own way,

  563. according to your own pleasure.

  564. Satan isn't coming

  565. and tempting him

  566. to,

  567. you know,

  568. make food

  569. in an improper way

  570. or to use a miracle

  571. to prove that He's God

  572. or to just think selfishly

  573. without thinking of others.

  574. This is a temptation

  575. to pursue His desires

  576. that are centered

  577. on self,

  578. on me.

  579. What pleases me

  580. completely devoid

  581. or divorced

  582. from what is God

  583. saying about this to you?

  584. See,

  585. later on,

  586. Jesus,

  587. how does Jesus respond?

  588. He says,

  589. He doesn't say,

  590. no,

  591. the Messiah is not

  592. allowed to eat bread.

  593. He doesn't say that.

  594. He says,

  595. it is written,

  596. man shall not live

  597. by bread alone,

  598. but by every word

  599. that comes from

  600. the mouth of God.

  601. See,

  602. Satan's coming saying,

  603. Jesus,

  604. you've got this natural life here,

  605. you've got this spiritual life here,

  606. just keep these two separated

  607. and you,

  608. one,

  609. just satisfy yourself,

  610. your own way,

  611. your own desires,

  612. your own pleasure.

  613. And don't worry about,

  614. you can deal with that

  615. when you go to synagogue

  616. on Saturday.

  617. And Jesus is saying,

  618. this life,

  619. divorced from relationship

  620. with God,

  621. is contrary to how God

  622. has organized

  623. organized

  624. and called me

  625. to live my life.

  626. Man shall not live

  627. just by desires alone,

  628. but by every word

  629. that comes

  630. from the mouth of God.

  631. Friends,

  632. isn't that exactly

  633. what Satan comes

  634. and did to Adam

  635. and Eve in the garden?

  636. He says,

  637. look at this fruit.

  638. You have needs,

  639. you have desires.

  640. God's put you in charge

  641. of all the stuff.

  642. You're entitled

  643. to satisfy your desires.

  644. It's just a little dragon fruit.

  645. Dragon fruit's not going

  646. to harm anyone.

  647. I'm sure it was dragon fruit

  648. in the garden of Eden.

  649. Friends,

  650. isn't that how Satan

  651. comes and tempts you and I?

  652. For most of us,

  653. the temptations we face

  654. are not going to be

  655. to rob a bank

  656. or to start

  657. an international drug cartel

  658. or something like that.

  659. How's he going to come?

  660. He's going to say,

  661. you've got desires.

  662. You've got sexual desires.

  663. It's natural.

  664. It's part of your body.

  665. That's just dissatisfied.

  666. You've got financial desires

  667. and needs.

  668. It's natural.

  669. There's nothing wrong

  670. with a bit of wealth.

  671. Come just indulge

  672. in that a little bit.

  673. You've got relational desires

  674. or whatever it is,

  675. leisure desires.

  676. Just indulge in that.

  677. Friends,

  678. is it wrong

  679. to pursue a relationship?

  680. No,

  681. not at all.

  682. Is it wrong

  683. to work hard?

  684. Is it wrong

  685. to save money

  686. for the future?

  687. Is it wrong

  688. to eat bread

  689. when you're hungry?

  690. Of course not.

  691. But what Jesus

  692. is saying is this.

  693. He's saying,

  694. the life of a Christ follower

  695. rejects the idea

  696. that I'm entitled

  697. to whatever pleases me

  698. in whatever way

  699. that it pleases me.

  700. A Christian is someone

  701. who lives by faith

  702. that God himself

  703. satisfies me

  704. and all my pleasures

  705. and all my desires

  706. come off filtered

  707. within the channel

  708. of God,

  709. what is your will

  710. for my life?

  711. You see that?

  712. Man doesn't live

  713. by bread alone,

  714. but it's God.

  715. What is your word saying?

  716. What are you saying

  717. about this area of desire?

  718. What are you saying

  719. about this relationship?

  720. What are you saying

  721. about my relationship

  722. to money?

  723. What are you saying

  724. about my relationship

  725. to everything in life?

  726. Jesus is saying,

  727. the decisions I make

  728. aren't based on

  729. what I feel,

  730. what I desire,

  731. but what aids

  732. my relationship

  733. with God.

  734. And so he says,

  735. it is written,

  736. God has spoken,

  737. God has said,

  738. I do not live

  739. by pleasure alone,

  740. but that which comes

  741. from God.

  742. See friends,

  743. what Jesus shows us here

  744. is that food

  745. and work

  746. and relationships

  747. and overseas holidays

  748. and university degrees

  749. and children

  750. and promotion

  751. and mobile phones

  752. and fashion.

  753. These things aren't wrong.

  754. They're gifts from God.

  755. He's made them.

  756. He doesn't denounce them

  757. as evil.

  758. He's not opposed

  759. to these things.

  760. Later on in the Gospels,

  761. Jesus will make food

  762. and feed 5,000 people.

  763. Jesus will turn water

  764. into wine.

  765. He can turn stones

  766. into bread.

  767. But he's saying

  768. that every pleasure

  769. of God

  770. is approached

  771. through the filter

  772. of God.

  773. What aids my relationship

  774. with you?

  775. I do not live

  776. by relationships alone

  777. or work alone

  778. or overseas holidays alone,

  779. but my relationship

  780. with my heavenly Father.

  781. Does that make sense?

  782. Okay.

  783. Let's look at the second thing.

  784. Let's look at verse 5 to 7.

  785. Now,

  786. the devil comes

  787. to Jesus again

  788. and he takes him

  789. up to a high point

  790. of a building

  791. and he says,

  792. Jesus,

  793. since you are

  794. the Son of God,

  795. why don't you

  796. throw yourself down?

  797. For God has promised

  798. to always look after you.

  799. God has promised

  800. that nothing

  801. will go wrong with you.

  802. God has promised

  803. that not even

  804. your small baby toe

  805. will get a tiny scratch.

  806. He's promised

  807. to look after you

  808. to make your life

  809. go comfortably

  810. and to always

  811. be there at your side

  812. and why don't you

  813. test him?

  814. Check if he's good

  815. for his word.

  816. Now,

  817. the devil's

  818. learning something here.

  819. He's learning

  820. that Jesus

  821. doesn't just respond

  822. according to desire,

  823. but he always says,

  824. what has God said?

  825. And so the devil here

  826. quotes the scriptures

  827. and says,

  828. remember what God said

  829. in Psalm 91,

  830. that every one

  831. of your needs

  832. he will take care of.

  833. Now,

  834. of course,

  835. the devil is quoting

  836. the scriptures

  837. out of context,

  838. right?

  839. Jesus calls him

  840. the father of lies.

  841. The devil will take

  842. God's word

  843. and he'll slightly

  844. adjust it

  845. or twist it

  846. or put it

  847. in a certain context

  848. to make it say

  849. something other

  850. than what it means.

  851. And so what's

  852. the devil saying here?

  853. He's tempting Jesus

  854. with a kind of

  855. prosperity gospel.

  856. He's saying,

  857. Jesus,

  858. God has promised

  859. that nothing

  860. will go wrong

  861. with you.

  862. Your life

  863. will be blessed.

  864. Whatever difficult

  865. situation you find

  866. yourself in,

  867. you find yourself

  868. falling from a building,

  869. you find yourself

  870. in trouble,

  871. whatever difficult

  872. situation you find

  873. yourself in,

  874. he will deliver you.

  875. He will look after you.

  876. He'll never let

  877. anything go wrong

  878. with you.

  879. Just test him.

  880. Throw yourself down.

  881. See what I mean.

  882. And what he's doing

  883. is he's tempting

  884. Jesus with the belief

  885. that God owes you

  886. a safe life,

  887. a comfortable life,

  888. a blessed life,

  889. a life without inconvenience.

  890. Friends,

  891. have you and I

  892. bought the lie

  893. that God promises us

  894. that nothing will ever

  895. go wrong with our lives?

  896. That whatever situation

  897. we find ourselves in,

  898. that God will just

  899. suddenly swoop us up

  900. and pick us up

  901. and that he won't

  902. let us scratch

  903. our baby toe?

  904. Friends,

  905. have we bought the lie

  906. that God is only good

  907. and he's only trustworthy

  908. because he makes our lives

  909. comfortable,

  910. convenient,

  911. and he doesn't allow

  912. any difficulty

  913. to come our way?

  914. Friends,

  915. have Satan convinced us

  916. that God is only good

  917. and trustworthy

  918. and worthy of worship

  919. if nothing goes wrong

  920. in your life?

  921. That every time

  922. you face a challenge,

  923. God must surely

  924. save you from that challenge,

  925. otherwise he's not

  926. worthy of worship.

  927. Friends,

  928. if we're a Christian

  929. because God did something

  930. good in our life

  931. once upon a time,

  932. like he healed our child

  933. or he gave you a job

  934. or he gave you a child

  935. or he saved your marriage,

  936. if that's the reason

  937. why we're a Christian

  938. because God did some

  939. good thing,

  940. like we felt like

  941. we were falling off

  942. the building

  943. and God suddenly

  944. swooped up

  945. and caught us,

  946. then maybe we're not

  947. actually a Christian

  948. because we love God

  949. but because we love

  950. ourselves.

  951. And we're asking God

  952. to serve us

  953. rather than us

  954. serving him.

  955. In fact,

  956. we may just be using God

  957. and not worshiping him

  958. and we may not be

  959. Christians at all.

  960. What's Jesus' response

  961. to this?

  962. Well, he quotes

  963. Deuteronomy chapter 6

    Deuteronomy 6 chapter mention

  964. which recounts the way

  965. that the Israelites

  966. were in their own wilderness

  967. and they're grumbling

  968. and they're moaning

  969. and they're saying,

  970. God, we thought

  971. you were good.

  972. We thought you were

  973. meant to look after us.

  974. Where's our food?

  975. And then God

  976. gives them food.

  977. And they say,

  978. where's the water?

  979. And God gives them water.

  980. And then they say,

  981. where's the meat?

  982. We're tired of bread.

  983. And every step of the way

  984. they're moaning

  985. and grumbling

  986. because things aren't

  987. going their way.

  988. And they start to wonder,

  989. God, are you really good?

  990. Are you really trustworthy?

  991. Should we really worship you

  992. when things don't go our way?

  993. And they're saying,

  994. God, it feels like

  995. we're falling here

  996. and we're your angels

  997. to save us,

  998. to pick us up.

  999. And what does God say?

  1000. He says,

1001. why are you testing me?

  1002. Why are you checking

  1003. whether I'm still

  1004. worthy of worship

  1005. just because things

  1006. aren't going the way

1007. that you expect them to be?

  1008. Don't you know

  1009. that I know what I'm doing?

1010. Why are you putting me

  1011. to the test

1012. as if I'm only honest,

  1013. good or trustworthy

  1014. when things will go

1015. the way that you want them to?

  1016. And so Jesus responds

  1017. to Satan.

  1018. He says,

  1019. Satan, don't give me

  1020. your nonsense.

  1021. I'm sure that's what

  1022. the original Greek says.

  1023. He says,

  1024. God is good

  1025. and he's trustworthy

  1026. and I will not

1027. put him to the test.

  1028. What's Jesus saying?

  1029. He's saying,

1030. the life of a Christian

  1031. rejects the lie

  1032. that I deserve

  1033. God's blessing

  1034. and protection

  1035. and lives by faith

  1036. that God is good

  1037. all the time

  1038. and he knows

  1039. what he's doing

1040. not just when he does

  1041. miracles that benefit me.

  1042. Okay?

  1043. Does that make sense?

  1044. Okay.

  1045. I hope so.

  1046. Let's look at

  1047. the third temptation.

  1048. Look at verse 8

  1049. with me.

  1050. Satan now comes

  1051. and he brings

  1052. the final temptation

  1053. and he says this

  1054. verse 8.

  1055. Again,

  1056. the devil took him

1057. up to a very high mountain

  1058. and he showed him

  1059. all the kingdoms

  1060. of the world

  1061. and their glory.

1062. And he said to him,

  1063. all these things

  1064. I will give you

  1065. if you fall down

  1066. and worship me.

  1067. Now,

  1068. what's Satan saying here?

  1069. What's going on here?

  1070. Remember

  1071. the passage

  1072. just before this

  1073. that we spoke about

  1074. last week.

  1075. Jesus is baptized,

  1076. right?

1077. And as he comes out,

  1078. we said it earlier,

  1079. this voice comes

  1080. and this voice

  1081. from the heavens,

  1082. which is God's voice,

  1083. speaks to him

  1084. and says,

1085. this is my beloved son,

  1086. which is a quote

  1087. from Psalm chapter 2.

    Psalms 2 chapter mention

  1088. And it's a quote

  1089. that speaks about

  1090. how Christ is

  1091. the Messiah King.

  1092. He is the one

  1093. who will one day

  1094. rule the whole world.

  1095. And then he says,

  1096. this is my son

1097. with whom I am well pleased,

  1098. which is a quote

  1099. from Isaiah 42,

  1100. talking about how

1101. Jesus is the suffering servant.

1102. And what God is doing

  1103. is he's commissioning

  1104. Jesus saying,

  1105. you are the one

  1106. true king,

  1107. the Messiah king,

  1108. but the way

  1109. that you will

  1110. get to glory

  1111. is through the cross.

  1112. You're the king,

1113. but you're the suffering servant.

  1114. In other words,

  1115. this is a road

  1116. to glory,

  1117. but the road

  1118. to glory

  1119. passes through Calvary.

  1120. Okay?

  1121. What's Satan

  1122. saying here

  1123. when he says,

  1124. Jesus,

  1125. I will give you

  1126. all the kingdoms

  1127. of the world

  1128. in all their glory,

  1129. if only

  1130. you'll worship me.

  1131. he's offering him

  1132. glory

  1133. without the cross.

  1134. He's offering him

  1135. the end result.

  1136. He's saying,

  1137. Jesus,

  1138. that cross

1139. is not going to be

  1140. very nice.

  1141. I will organize

  1142. a shortcut for you.

  1143. I will allow you

1144. to get to the end goal

  1145. without needing to suffer,

  1146. without needing

  1147. to humiliate yourself,

  1148. without needing

  1149. to go through

  1150. the painful,

  1151. humiliating experience

  1152. of the cross.

  1153. Jesus,

  1154. I'll offer you glory

  1155. without Calvary.

  1156. Friends,

  1157. is this not

  1158. one of the most

  1159. subtle and sinister

  1160. and yet pervasive

  1161. temptations we face?

  1162. Satan comes to us

  1163. and says,

  1164. I'll offer you

  1165. control of your life.

  1166. I'll offer you glory.

  1167. Why don't you

  1168. just be lord

  1169. of your own life?

  1170. Why don't you

  1171. be lord

  1172. of your own kingdom?

  1173. Without any cost

  1174. involved,

1175. all you have to do

1176. is just make a deal

  1177. with me.

  1178. Without any cost,

  1179. you can avoid

1180. the cost of the cross.

  1181. You can avoid

  1182. the cost of humiliation.

  1183. You can avoid

1184. the cost of humbling yourself.

  1185. You can avoid

  1186. the cost of repentance.

  1187. I'll give you

  1188. what you want.

1189. Just make a simple deal

  1190. with me.

  1191. Except the problem is,

  1192. whenever we make

1193. a deal with the devil,

  1194. it does come

  1195. with a price.

  1196. In fact,

  1197. one of the things

  1198. about the devil

  1199. is that it always

  1200. comes with a price

  1201. far more

  1202. than we're willing

  1203. to pay.

  1204. I don't know

  1205. if you've ever

  1206. had this experience

  1207. where you've bought

  1208. something

  1209. and it's something

  1210. really expensive.

  1211. You thought you've

  1212. done all your homework

1213. and you've checked it out

  1214. and you say,

  1215. okay,

1216. I'm going to do it.

  1217. Maybe it's

  1218. whatever it is.

  1219. Then only later,

  1220. afterwards,

  1221. you realize

  1222. there are all these

  1223. hidden costs.

  1224. There's this service cost

  1225. and there's this fee

  1226. that's been added

  1227. and there's this

  1228. small fine print

1229. and because you did it

  1230. in this way,

  1231. there's this extra fee.

  1232. Has that ever happened

  1233. to you?

  1234. You feel the sense

  1235. of regret.

  1236. You feel like,

  1237. oh my goodness,

  1238. if I'd known

  1239. how much it was

  1240. going to cost me,

  1241. I would never

  1242. have done that.

  1243. And you feel this

1244. like sick in your stomach

  1245. feeling that actually

  1246. cost you far more

  1247. than you bargained for.

1248. Do you know that feeling?

  1249. Friends,

1250. when you make a deal

  1251. with the devil,

  1252. it's like that

  1253. but only a million

  1254. times worse.

  1255. In your mind's eye,

  1256. you think,

  1257. okay,

1258. I know how this works.

  1259. Yeah,

1260. it might cost me that

1261. but I'll get all this benefit.

  1262. Friends,

  1263. it always,

  1264. always,

  1265. always,

  1266. costs a million times

  1267. more than you

  1268. bargained for.

  1269. And that's what the devil's doing.

  1270. He's coming and he's offering

  1271. Jesus that

1272. and he offers it to us.

1273. He offers it to us

  1274. every single day

1275. to have all the kingdoms

  1276. of the world

  1277. and all their splendor,

  1278. all their glory.

  1279. And he says,

1280. you won't even have to

  1281. humble yourselves.

1282. You won't have to admit

  1283. you're a sinner.

1284. You can avoid the humiliation

  1285. of repentance.

1286. Just come and listen to me.

  1287. And really,

  1288. in essence,

1289. this is what the whole

1290. of the passage is about.

  1291. It's about

1292. who are you going to serve?

1293. Are you going to serve yourself

1294. or are you going to serve

  1295. the one true God?

1296. And so Jesus' response is this,

  1297. it is written,

  1298. you shall worship

  1299. the Lord your God

  1300. and him only

  1301. shall you serve.

1302. And this really is the essence

  1303. of the entire passage.

1304. Who are you going to serve?

  1305. Yourself

1306. or the one true God?

  1307. Friends,

  1308. there's only one person

  1309. that is rightly,

  1310. that can rightly occupy

1311. the throne of our lives.

  1312. There's only one person

1313. who is worthy of our worship.

  1314. There's only one being

  1315. that is worthy

  1316. and trustworthy enough

1317. for us to give our lives

  1318. to him,

  1319. the one true God.

  1320. You shall worship God

  1321. and him only

  1322. shall you serve.

  1323. Jesus tells us

  1324. that Christian faith

  1325. rejects the delusion

  1326. that self-glory

  1327. and living for ourselves

1328. is the way to go,

  1329. but that serving

  1330. the one true God,

  1331. he alone is worthy

  1332. of our worship.

  1333. No matter what

  1334. the cost.

  1335. No matter

  1336. what the cost.

  1337. Now,

  1338. how do we respond

  1339. to this?

  1340. How do we respond

  1341. to temptation

  1342. and testing

  1343. when temptation

  1344. comes our way?

  1345. I want to suggest

  1346. two responses

  1347. from this passage.

  1348. Well, this passage

  1349. gives us two ways

  1350. to respond.

  1351. Two ways to stand

  1352. against the schemes

  1353. of the devil.

  1354. The first is

  1355. be ruthless

  1356. with temptation.

  1357. Ruthless means

  1358. be extreme.

  1359. Don't compromise.

  1360. Don't make any deals.

  1361. Be ruthless

  1362. with temptation.

  1363. And secondly,

  1364. rejoice in Christ

  1365. your king.

  1366. Look at verse 10

  1367. with me

1368. if you've got your Bible

  1369. on the bulletin.

  1370. Satan comes and says,

  1371. Jesus,

  1372. I'll offer you

  1373. all the kingdoms

  1374. of the world.

  1375. I'll offer you

  1376. all their glory.

  1377. Just bow down

  1378. and honor me.

  1379. And Jesus says,

1380. what does he say first?

  1381. He says,

  1382. Satan,

  1383. be gone.

  1384. Get your bags

1385. and get out of here.

  1386. Be gone.

  1387. And friends,

  1388. remember,

1389. Jesus says the same thing

  1390. just before he's about

  1391. to be crucified.

1392. Peter comes up to him.

  1393. Jesus tells his disciples,

  1394. listen,

  1395. the Son of Man

1396. is about to be crucified.

1397. He's about to be nailed

  1398. to the cross

1399. for the sins of the world.

1400. And Peter comes up to him

  1401. and says,

  1402. never, Lord.

  1403. Never.

1404. It shouldn't happen to you.

  1405. He says,

  1406. you are the Christ.

  1407. You are the Messiah.

1408. You shouldn't have to die

  1409. on the cross.

  1410. And then Peter comes

  1411. and he's starting to

  1412. persuade Jesus

1413. not to go to the cross.

1414. And what does Jesus say?

  1415. He doesn't say,

  1416. Peter,

1417. let me just explain this

1418. to you one more time.

  1419. He says,

  1420. Satan,

  1421. get behind me.

  1422. And friends,

1423. sometimes we need to do that

  1424. with temptation.

  1425. We can't coddle it

  1426. and just say,

  1427. okay,

  1428. well,

  1429. let's see if I can make a deal.

1430. Sometimes we need to be ruthless.

  1431. Be gone.

  1432. Get out of here.

  1433. Pack your bags

  1434. and go.

  1435. Friends,

1436. sometimes we need to get angry

  1437. with temptation

  1438. and the devil.

  1439. He's lying to you.

  1440. He's deceiving you.

1441. He's the father of lies.

  1442. And Jesus has come

  1443. to give you life

1444. and life to the full.

  1445. And Satan

1446. has come to rob you of life.

1447. He's come to destroy your life.

  1448. He's come to destroy

  1449. your relationships.

  1450. He's come to destroy

  1451. your self-worth.

  1452. He's come to destroy

  1453. your relationship with Jesus.

1454. He's coming to kill you.

  1455. And sometimes,

1456. let me put it this way,

  1457. 1 Peter says that

  1458. the devil's like a roaring lion.

1459. He wants to devour you.

1460. He wants to tear you apart.

1461. He wants to take your marriage

  1462. and strip it.

  1463. He wants to take

  1464. your dating relationship

  1465. and destroy it.

  1466. He wants to take

  1467. your reputation

1468. and leave it in tatters.

  1469. He wants to take

  1470. your self-worth

  1471. and your confidence

1472. and rip it to shreds.

1473. He wants to kill you

  1474. and devour you

  1475. like a roaring lion.

  1476. Except,

  1477. he's very sneaky.

  1478. He'll come to you

  1479. and pretend

  1480. to be a kitten.

  1481. He'll ask you

  1482. just to stroke him.

1483. And you'll look very cute

  1484. and very appealing

  1485. until he grows up

  1486. and he kills you.

  1487. Friends,

  1488. can I ask us,

  1489. what sin

  1490. or what temptation

1491. are we holding on to?

  1492. What sin

  1493. or temptation

1494. have we made a deal with?

  1495. Maybe you feel like,

1496. I've given in so many times,

1497. what's the point in fighting?

1498. Maybe you feel like pornography.

  1499. It's like,

  1500. I just can't beat this thing.

1501. I've given in so many times,

  1502. what's the point?

1503. Why do I even fight

  1504. one more time?

1505. It's just going to happen again.

  1506. I might as well

  1507. just go with it.

  1508. Friends,

  1509. you fight.

  1510. Get some fight.

  1511. Get some steel.

  1512. Get some backbone

  1513. and kick that thing.

  1514. You tell the devil,

  1515. get out of here.

1516. Pack your bags and go.

  1517. Maybe it's offense.

  1518. Maybe it's bitterness.

1519. Maybe somebody's let you down.

  1520. Someone's hurt you.

  1521. This is probably

1522. one of the biggest temptations

  1523. for me.

  1524. It's so hard

1525. to let that thing go.

1526. I just play that situation

1527. over and over in my mind.

1528. I play what they said

  1529. and I play what I said

1530. and then I remind myself

  1531. just once more

  1532. what they said

1533. and then I just remind myself

1534. how sorry I feel for myself

1535. and how unjust it was

1536. and how unrighteous they were

  1537. and how I don't deserve that

1538. and I just remind myself again

  1539. of just how badly

  1540. I've been treated.

  1541. Woe is me.

  1542. Friends,

  1543. self-pity is a form

  1544. of self-glory

1545. because it's all about me

1546. and I want to be king

1547. and I don't want to be treated badly.

  1548. Friends,

  1549. is there bitterness?

  1550. Is there unforgiveness?

  1551. Is there offense

1552. that you're holding on to?

  1553. Friends,

  1554. be ruthless

  1555. with temptation.

  1556. You kick that thing

  1557. out of the house.

  1558. Be gone.

  1559. Sometimes the best response

1560. we can give to Satan,

  1561. his lies

  1562. and his temptations

  1563. is be gone.

  1564. Get out of here.

  1565. But then

  1566. there's a second way

  1567. to respond

  1568. and this is

  1569. rejoice in Christ

  1570. your king.

  1571. Now,

  1572. in some ways

1573. this is one of the most

  1574. important things

1575. and so I want to land

  1576. with this

1577. but it's one of the most

  1578. important things.

1579. I want you to listen

  1580. and take careful attention

  1581. to this.

  1582. The thing of standing

  1583. against temptation

  1584. is probably not new

  1585. for any of us.

  1586. I doubt there's anybody

  1587. here that has never

  1588. thought about the concept

1589. of I should stand up

  1590. against temptation.

  1591. I mean,

1592. we all know it, right?

1593. We all know that we

  1594. should serve Christ

  1595. our Lord.

1596. We all know that we

  1597. probably shouldn't give in

  1598. to our natural desires.

1599. We all know that we

  1600. shouldn't test God.

1601. We all know that there's

  1602. one true God

1603. and he alone is king.

  1604. These are things

  1605. that we know

1606. and we know that we

  1607. shouldn't use God

  1608. for ourselves.

  1609. We know that we

  1610. shouldn't wallow

  1611. in self-glory

1612. and yet we still do it.

  1613. We still give in.

  1614. We still mess up

  1615. time and time again.

  1616. We buy the line.

  1617. We make a deal

  1618. with the devil.

  1619. We pay the price.

  1620. We abandon restraint

1621. and we give in to pleasure.

1622. Why do we do it?

1623. If we know these things,

1624. why do we still do it?

  1625. Well,

  1626. the answer is not

  1627. because we are ignorant

  1628. of the truth.

  1629. We probably know

  1630. and understand the truth.

  1631. The answer is

  1632. because there's something

1633. going on in our hearts

  1634. at our deepest,

  1635. most fundamental level,

  1636. our hearts love ourselves.

  1637. We love self-worship

  1638. and self-glory.

  1639. Notice all of these

  1640. temptations are about me,

  1641. my desires,

  1642. my security,

  1643. my glory.

  1644. And what that means,

  1645. friends,

1646. is that we're in deep,

  1647. deep trouble

  1648. because what we need

  1649. is more than just

  1650. more teaching

  1651. and more than just

  1652. more knowledge.

  1653. What we need

  1654. is a savior,

  1655. someone to rescue,

  1656. someone to change us,

  1657. someone to change

  1658. the disposition

  1659. of our hearts.

  1660. We need someone

  1661. to come alongside us

  1662. in that moment

  1663. of temptation

1664. and to pick us up

1665. and to put his arm

  1666. around us

  1667. and to carry us

  1668. over the finishing line.

  1669. There's a story,

  1670. 1992,

  1671. the Barcelona Olympics.

1672. Some of you might know

  1673. the story,

  1674. very famous story.

  1675. There's a British runner

  1676. called Derek Redmond

1677. and he has made it

  1678. to the Olympic Games.

  1679. He's a 400 meter runner

  1680. and he's obviously

  1681. mid-20s.

  1682. He's been training

  1683. for decades

  1684. since a young boy

  1685. running at school,

  1686. got to high school,

1687. running in all the competitions.

  1688. There his talent

  1689. was noticed

  1690. and people said,

  1691. hey,

  1692. you've really got

  1693. something in you.

  1694. And so even

1695. as a high school student,

  1696. he starts making sacrifices,

  1697. getting coaches,

  1698. watching his diet,

  1699. starts training,

  1700. getting fitter,

  1701. stronger,

  1702. goes to college

  1703. and spends thousands

  1704. if not millions

  1705. of dollars

  1706. on coaches

  1707. and training exercises,

  1708. regimes,

  1709. extremely disciplined,

  1710. becomes a professional athlete

  1711. and makes it

  1712. to the Olympic Games.

  1713. And so it's 1992,

1714. he's at the Olympic Games

  1715. in Barcelona,

  1716. his first heat's coming

  1717. and he smokes it.

  1718. Does brilliantly.

1719. Gets through to the next heat.

  1720. The next heat comes

  1721. and he does fantastically

  1722. and he gets through

  1723. to the finals.

1724. And now it's the finals

  1725. of the 400 meters,

  1726. the Olympic Games

  1727. and he is pitted

  1728. to be a medalist.

  1729. They think he's probably

  1730. going to finish

  1731. in the top three

1732. if not get the gold medal.

1733. He's one of the favorites.

1734. And his race comes up,

1735. he goes to the starting line,

  1736. does the whole thing,

  1737. gets ready,

  1738. goes down,

  1739. the gun goes off

1740. and he's out of the blocks

1741. and he's giving it his all.

  1742. He goes past

  1743. the first 100 meters

1744. and as he gets past

  1745. the 100 meters,

  1746. I think we've got a picture,

  1747. as he gets past

  1748. the 150 meters,

1749. he feels his hamstring going

  1750. and he's out.

1751. And he falls to the ground

  1752. and everyone else

1753. just comes sprinting past him

  1754. and leaves him

  1755. in the trail.

  1756. And there he is

1757. on the greatest world stage,

1758. he's lying on the floor,

  1759. he's grabbing his hamstring,

  1760. he's in absolute agony.

1761. But it's not just the agony,

  1762. it's the pain

  1763. of decades of training.

1764. Everything he's given his life to

1765. in one second is gone.

  1766. And it's all done,

  1767. it's finished.

  1768. He's fallen,

  1769. he's on the ground.

  1770. And the crowd,

  1771. I don't know whether

  1772. to watch him

1773. or to watch the winners,

  1774. right?

1775. And the guys go past

1776. and they finish the race.

  1777. And the crowd starts

1778. to get on their feet

  1779. and they're cheering him

  1780. and he gets up

1781. and he tries to hobble

1782. and he hobbles about 10 meters

  1783. and he falls down

  1784. to the ground again.

  1785. He can't hobble anymore.

  1786. And at that moment,

  1787. a man,

  1788. an older man,

  1789. jumps over the barricade

1790. and he runs onto the track.

  1791. And the security guards

  1792. try and stop him

  1793. because he's not allowed

  1794. to do that.

  1795. And he's fighting

  1796. the security guards off

  1797. and he's saying,

1798. let me get to him,

1799. let me get to him.

1800. And he gets to him

  1801. and Derek Redman

1802. tries to push this guy away

  1803. until he realizes

  1804. who it is.

  1805. And it's his dad.

1806. And his dad picks him up

1807. and he puts his arm around him

1808. and for the next 250 meters,

1809. they hobble to the finish line

1810. and he crosses the line

1811. with his dad holding him.

  1812. Friends,

  1813. you and I don't just need

  1814. a good instruction

  1815. how to beat temptation.

  1816. We don't just need

1817. three ways to get better

  1818. at getting through life.

  1819. Friends,

1820. if you and I have sinned this week,

1821. like you and I have,

1822. if you and I have done

  1823. something wrong this week,

1824. what we don't just need

1825. is someone in the crowd

  1826. saying,

  1827. get up,

  1828. get up,

  1829. sort yourself out.

  1830. What we need

  1831. is a savior

1832. who will come alongside us

  1833. and pick us up

  1834. and will come

  1835. and carry us

  1836. over the finishing lines.

  1837. Friends,

1838. have you sinned this week?

  1839. Have you messed up?

  1840. Have you fallen?

  1841. Maybe you've fallen spectacularly

1842. and you're embarrassed about it.

  1843. Maybe even ashamed.

  1844. Friends,

  1845. have you wallowed

  1846. self-pity

  1847. or self-glory?

1848. Have you bought the lie

  1849. that you're entitled

  1850. to gratify

  1851. and fulfill

  1852. your own fleshly desires,

  1853. your own ways

  1854. on your own terms?

  1855. Friends,

  1856. if you're a Christian this morning,

  1857. you have a savior

1858. who came to forgive you

  1859. and cover you.

1860. But you have a savior

1861. who did more than that.

1862. He came to pick you up

  1863. and to carry you

  1864. over the finishing line.

  1865. You have one

  1866. who has ultimate compassion

  1867. and tenderness.

  1868. You have one

  1869. who has gone through

  1870. every trial

  1871. that you've gone through,

  1872. who's been tempted

  1873. in every way

1874. and a million times more

  1875. and he knows

  1876. what you've gone through

1877. and yet you've got one

  1878. who is uncompromised,

1879. who then not a single accusation

  1880. can stick to him,

  1881. one who is spotless

  1882. and trustworthy

  1883. and he's come

1884. to bring you to himself.

  1885. Friends,

  1886. if you're not a Christian

  1887. this morning,

1888. do you know what that means?

1889. It means you're on your own.

1890. It means that you carry

1891. your sin all on your own.

1892. It means that the crowds

  1893. may be shouting

  1894. that you stand up,

  1895. pick yourself up,

1896. but you do not have a Savior

1897. who has come to do it for you.

  1898. You come to Jesus

1899. and he has come to do it for you.

  1900. He's inviting you

1901. not just to become religious,

  1902. he's offering to come

  1903. and pick you up

1904. and carry you over the line.

  1905. And that's what Matthew's telling us.

1906. What Matthew's showing us here

  1907. is that Jesus faced

  1908. the temptation

  1909. that Adam and Eve

1910. faced in the Garden of Eden

  1911. and they failed

  1912. and they fell.

  1913. Jesus is facing

  1914. the same temptation

1915. that the people of God

1916. faced in the wilderness desert

  1917. and they failed

  1918. and they fell.

  1919. Jesus is facing

  1920. the same temptations

  1921. that you face

  1922. and I face

  1923. every single day

  1924. and friends,

  1925. we fail

  1926. and we fall.

  1927. But here is one.

1928. Here is a true Israelite.

1929. Here is a true Adam.

1930. Here is a true son of Adam

  1931. that went through

  1932. every temptation

  1933. that you and I

  1934. could ever go through

  1935. and is absolutely spotless.

  1936. Not a single accusation

  1937. has stuck to him.

1938. And as he does that,

  1939. he's serving notice

  1940. that he came

1941. not just to show us

  1942. how to be better

  1943. but to defeat sin

  1944. and evil

  1945. on its own grounds.

  1946. He came to dismantle

1947. the work of the devil

  1948. by exposing its lies

  1949. and ultimately

  1950. he would do so

  1951. by ending up

  1952. on the cross.

  1953. I want to read

  1954. a quote to us

  1955. by William Collier.

  1956. Listen to this.

  1957. It says,

  1958. Jesus' temptation

  1959. in the wilderness

  1960. does not primarily

  1961. sketch a moral story

  1962. providing helpful hints

  1963. on how we too

1964. with a bit of Jesus'

  1965. inspiration

  1966. can conquer temptation.

  1967. Jesus' hostile standoff

  1968. with evil

  1969. was a reprisal

  1970. for all that humanity

  1971. had lost

1972. in the Garden of Eden

1973. or that we could never

  1974. on our own regain.

  1975. When Jesus emerged

  1976. from the wilderness

  1977. at Victor,

  1978. his triumph

  1979. signaled evil

  1980. was doomed

  1981. to obliteration.

  1982. Humanity was destined

  1983. for joy.

  1984. In other words,

  1985. Jesus did not merely

  1986. wink and make evil

  1987. disappear.

  1988. Rather,

  1989. he walked into

  1990. the bowls of evil

  1991. and defeated evil

  1992. on its own terms.

  1993. First in a wilderness

1994. and then on a cross.

  1995. Jesus did not merely

  1996. cover evil.

  1997. In his humble humanity,

  1998. he dismantled it.

  1999. Friends,

  2000. and this gives us

  2001. reason both to rejoice

  2002. with much joy

  2003. and celebration

  2004. and it gives us

  2005. the courage

  2006. to fight on.

  2007. We can fight

  2008. because we know

  2009. that sin

  2010. doesn't ultimately satisfy.

  2011. We can fight

  2012. because we know

  2013. that it's a lie

  2014. which promises the world

2015. but it only enslaves us

  2016. and entraps us.

  2017. We can fight

2018. because we have a Savior

2019. who came to defeat it,

2020. who came to lift us

2021. out off of the muck

  2022. and the dirt

  2023. and the surge

  2024. we find ourselves in

  2025. and to carry us

  2026. over the line

  2027. with his victor's crown.

  2028. Friends,

2029. this week you and I

  2030. will be tempted.

  2031. We will be tempted

2032. to satisfy our own desires

  2033. on our own terms,

  2034. fulfill our own pleasures.

  2035. Friends,

2036. this week we will be tempted

  2037. to feel entitled

  2038. that God owes us.

  2039. He owes us

2040. a good and comfortable life,

  2041. a life of ease

  2042. and blessedness.

2043. This week we will be tempted

2044. to build our own kingdom,

2045. to seek our own peace of glory.

  2046. Friends,

2047. this week let's be ruthless.

  2048. Let's tell Satan

2049. to get out of here.

  2050. Let's fight

  2051. with resolve.

  2052. But more than that,

  2053. let's rejoice

  2054. in the Savior

  2055. who came

  2056. to pick us up,

  2057. to cover our shame,

  2058. to cover our sin

2059. and to carry us home

  2060. with him.

  2061. Let's pray together.

  2062. Jesus Christ,

  2063. we thank you

  2064. and we revel, God,

2065. that where we have fallen

  2066. and sinned,

  2067. you, Christ,

  2068. are spotless.

  2069. God,

  2070. we thank you

  2071. and we revel

  2072. and we rejoice

  2073. and we delight

2074. in the fact that you,

  2075. God,

  2076. are the only one

  2077. that's worthy, God.

  2078. God,

  2079. where Satan tempts us

  2080. to despair

  2081. and he tells us

  2082. of the guilt within,

  2083. upward we look

2084. and we see you there,

2085. you who made an end

  2086. to all our sin.

  2087. And God,

  2088. that gives us confidence

  2089. to keep going

  2090. and reason to rejoice.

  2091. Father,

2092. we pray that even now,

  2093. God,

2094. won't you set us free

  2095. from the lies

  2096. and the accusation

2097. of the evil one, God?

2098. Won't you set us free

  2099. from the despair, God,

  2100. that so easily

  2101. covers our hearts?

  2102. Jesus,

  2103. won't you come

  2104. and pick us up

  2105. where we have fallen

  2106. and we are lying

  2107. on the ground,

  2108. hopeless and helpless?

  2109. Jesus,

  2110. won't you come

2111. and lift up our heads

2112. and lift up our hearts

  2113. and carry us

  2114. to the finishing line,

  2115. Lord God?

  2116. Jesus,

  2117. we pray,

2118. come and draw near to us.

  2119. Come and remind us,

  2120. God,

  2121. that our hope

  2122. is in you.

  2123. we ask you,

  2124. God,

  2125. to do these things

  2126. in your name.

  2127. Amen.

  2128. Amen.

  2129. Amen.

  2130. Amen.

  2131. Amen.

  2132. Amen.

  2133. Amen.

  2134. Amen.

  2135. Amen.

  2136. Amen.

  2137. Amen.

  2138. Amen.

  2139. Amen.

  2140. Amen.

  2141. Amen.

  2142. Amen.

  2143. Amen.

  2144. Amen.

  2145. Amen.

  2146. Amen.

  2147. Amen.

  2148. Amen.

  2149. Amen.

  2150. Amen.
