  1. Father, we are abundantly rich in so many things.

  2. You are the Father of all blessing, and you have blessed us with so much

  3. that if we were to name everything we have, our thanksgiving would fill a library of books.

  4. Father, you are the one who is worthy of all praise because you are the fountain of all life.

  5. So often our thanksgiving only focuses on the physical blessings we receive,

  6. as if they deserve the greatest mention.

  7. And yet you, the sovereign God, the creator of everything, who has no need of us,

  8. who has every right to turn away from us and ignore us and reject us,

  9. yet you choose to come down to us and call us to yourself through your Son.

  10. I pray that we would never forget the privilege that it is that we are your children.

  11. May it stun and amaze us that you would love us so much.

  12. Forgive us where we become so familiar with the gospel that it fails to wow us again.

  13. Please work in our hearts, Lord.

  14. Excite us with the glory of your name and how beautiful you are.

  15. Father, I want to thank you so much for ICF.

  16. Thank you for what you're doing in the lives of Irina and Fred and just so many other students.

  17. We pray that right there on that campus where there's so much pressure to perform,

  18. that they would have such a big God-centered view of things,

  19. that they would be so different from those around them,

  20. that they'd be a light, a beacon, Lord, to all those around,

  21. that they would have this confident security,

  22. that their worth is not found in how great their grades are,

  23. but their worth is found in how great you are and the love that you have poured on them.

  24. Father, I pray for the local church in Hong Kong.

  25. Thank you so much for the faithful witness of men and women over decades and decades

  26. of being a light, Lord, in this city.

  27. I want to think of Holy Light Church in Yuen Long and Pastor Paul there.

  28. Lord, thank you for them and their faithful ministry.

  29. Would you let the gospel go deeper and richer into that church

  30. as they celebrate 80 years of being in the city?

  31. And would they just not rest on their past,

  32. but would they push into you more as they reach out to local kids

  33. and the elderly up in Yuen Long?

  34. Would they be a beacon of light to draw other people to know you?

  35. Father, I want to pray for the Filipino community in this city.

  36. Many of them have religious backgrounds since their childhood,

  37. and yet many of them have never truly known you.

  38. Father, we want to pray for Janet and Arlene and Julie and Jonah and Zari and Leonara

  39. and the whole foundations of faith fellowship in our midst, Lord,

  40. as they are seeking to reach out to their Filipino and Indonesian friends and neighbors.

  41. Lord, please, would they know the calling on their lives?

  42. Would they know the love that you have for them?

  43. And would you use them mightily in reaching out to this community?

  44. I pray for all of us.

  45. Lord, I'm just so challenged by the fact that when we have so much,

  46. sometimes our faith can be so small.

  47. We can think we're following you,

  48. and yet I know so much in my own life and our own lives

  49. that our lives are consumed by little trinkets

  50. and not by the calling you have on us.

  51. We worry far more about things that people who have far less do not worry about.

  52. But may we lay our lives down before you with open hands,

  53. not assuming that you have to meet our expectations of convenience and comfort,

  54. but seeing your faithful goodness will lead and guide us,

  55. and we can trust you with whatever's going on in our lives right now.

  56. Father, we just lay ourselves before you.

  57. We thank you that you are good.

  58. We need you.

  59. Change us.

  60. Speak to us.

  61. In Jesus' mighty name.

  62. Amen.

  63. Amen.

  64. I'd love to invite Janet to come and read the scripture to us this morning.

  65. Thank you so much.

  66. The scripture reading comes from Matthew chapter 4.

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  67. Please follow along in your bulletins or on the screen.

  68. Now, when Jesus heard that John has been arrested,

  69. he withdrawed in Galilee.

  70. And leaving Nazareth, he went and left in Capernaum by the sea,

  71. in the territory of Zebulun in Naptali,

  72. so that what was spoken by Prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled.

  73. The land of Zebulun in the land of Naptali,

  74. the way of the sea beyond the Jordan,

  75. Galilee of the Gentiles.

  76. The people dwelling in darkness have been a great light,

  77. and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death,

  78. on them a light has dawned.

  79. For that time, Jesus began to preach, saying,

  80. Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

  81. While walking by the sea of Galilee,

  82. he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter,

  83. and Andrew, his brother,

  84. casting on it into the sea,

  85. for they were fishermen.

  86. And he said to them,

  87. Follow me, and I will make you a fisher of men.

  88. Immediately they left their nets and followed him.

  89. And going on from there,

  90. he saw two other brothers,

  91. James, the son of Zebedee,

  92. and John, his brother,

  93. in the boat with Zebedee, their father,

  94. mending their nets,

  95. and he called them.

  96. Immediately they left the boat and their father

  97. and followed him.

  98. And he went throughout all Galilee,

  99. teaching in their synagogues

  100. and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom

  101. and healing every disease

  102. and every affliction among the people.

  103. So his fame spread throughout all Syria,

  104. and they brought him all the sick,

  105. those afflicted with various diseases and pains,

  106. those oppressed by demons,

  107. those having seizures and paralytics,

  108. and he hallowed them.

  109. The great crowd followed him

  110. from Galilee and the Decapolis

  111. and from Jerusalem and Judea

  112. and from beyond the Jordan.

  113. And this is the word of God.

  114. Great.

  115. If you don't know,

  116. my name is Chris.

  117. I'm one of the leaders here at Watermark.

  118. And we're continuing in our series

  119. of going through Matthew's gospel.

  120. And so,

  121. I don't know if you've had a recent performance review

  122. at your work,

  123. but what happens when you do a performance review

  124. is you look back

  125. over your past history

  126. of what you've done,

  127. whether in the last three months,

  128. six months,

  129. or year,

  130. and you evaluate it,

  131. and then you hope that you will actually,

  132. from the mistakes that you've learned

  133. and the good things you've done,

  134. you'll actually move forward

  135. to not repeat the same things

  136. and to grow and improve.

  137. That's the idea,

  138. I think.

  139. Well,

  140. the people of Israel,

  141. God's people,

  142. had been given enough performance reviews

  143. by God

  144. throughout a thousand years of history

  145. and every single performance review

  146. they'd failed.

  147. Every one of them,

  148. they'd made exactly the same mistakes

  149. that the previous generation had made

  150. again and again and again and again.

  151. They never seemed to learn.

  152. And yet,

  153. God had been so good to them

  154. that they kept trusting in other gods.

  155. God kept showing them His goodness.

  156. He brought them out of Egypt,

  157. out of slavery.

  158. He brought them through the wilderness

  159. and provided for them.

  160. He brought them again and again,

  161. provision and grace,

  162. and again and again,

  163. they refused to trust Him.

  164. Every trial,

  165. every test,

  166. they failed.

  167. I don't know if any of you

  168. have ever felt like that.

  169. But that is actually

  170. not just Israel's story,

  171. that's our story.

  172. before a holy God.

  173. And Matthew,

  174. in his gospel,

  175. has been showing

  176. how the story of Israel,

  177. their life,

  178. it needs a rewrite.

  179. It needs someone to come

  180. and rewrite the story

  181. so that their future

  182. will be different from their past.

  183. And so John the Baptist

  184. has come proclaiming,

  185. repent for the kingdom of God is near.

  186. There's a new future coming.

  187. And there's someone who's coming,

  188. the only person

  189. who can actually rewrite your future.

  190. The only person who's actually

  191. passed the performance review,

  192. which is Jesus Christ,

  193. who comes.

  194. And so Matthew has been showing us

  195. how he's been baptized in the Jordan,

  196. just like Israel went through the Red Sea.

  197. He's led into the wilderness,

  198. just like Israel did.

  199. But where they failed,

  200. he succeeded.

  201. Where they failed the test,

  202. he didn't.

  203. And now John the Baptist's ministry

  204. of saying,

  205. pointing to this one

  206. who's going to come

  207. to bring in the future,

  208. John the Baptist got arrested.

  209. His deal is done.

  210. And he's passing on the baton

  211. to Jesus.

  212. And Jesus heads into his time of ministry.

  213. And this is where the rest

  214. of the book of Matthew is going.

  215. And we're going to see his teaching

  216. coming up in the Sermon on the Mount.

  217. But before that,

  218. we're going to see some key things

  219. about what Jesus is doing

  220. in gathering a new people,

  221. a new community,

  222. who know how to repent

  223. and follow him.

  224. So what we're going to do,

  225. I'm going to go through

  226. three key points today.

  227. The first one,

  228. Jesus goes out into the darkness.

  229. And the last one,

  230. which is going to be about

  231. Jesus calls us to something

  232. bigger than ourselves,

  233. they're going to be short.

  234. The middle one,

  235. which is going to be

  236. about Jesus calls us to himself,

  237. is going to be most of our time.

  238. So if you're wondering

  239. at the end of the second point,

  240. are we ever going to end?

  241. Take courage.

  242. We will.

  243. So let's kind of dive in.

  244. If you've got your bulletin with you,

  245. the first point,

  246. Jesus goes into the darkness.

  247. This is verses 12 to 16.

  248. What you'll see,

  249. it says,

  250. Jesus withdrew into Galilee.

  251. And he's called Galilee of the Gentiles.

  252. It says,

  253. the people dwelling in darkness

  254. have seen a great light.

  255. And for those dwelling in the region

  256. and shadow of death,

  257. on them a light has dawned.

  258. And Jesus,

  259. in fulfillment of a prophecy from Isaiah

  260. 700 years before,

  261. which was related to this place,

  262. Galilee,

  263. in the north of Israel,

  264. from where in Isaiah's time,

  265. Assyria had brought God's judgment

  266. for their sin

  267. onto the people of Israel.

  268. But now,

  269. into that same place,

  270. Jesus is heading.

  271. Now what you probably don't realize

  272. is it's Galilee of the Gentiles

  273. is not a compliment

  274. for a Jewish writer.

  275. If you think about,

  276. you know,

  277. the walled city in Kowloon

  278. that got knocked down 25 years ago,

  279. you know its reputation

  280. was kind of like this den of iniquity,

  281. of like prostitution, gambling,

  282. all kinds of darkness there.

  283. Well,

  284. that's the same kind of idea for Galilee.

  285. That it was a place of compromise

  286. where unclean,

  287. non-Jewish people

  288. had settled there

  289. with their different religions.

  290. And Matthew quotes Isaiah saying,

  291. this people there,

  292. they dwell in a darkness.

  293. They dwell in the shadow of death.

  294. And what's really interesting

  295. is Matthew has actually changed

  296. the word that Isaiah used.

  297. Isaiah said,

  298. the people walk in darkness.

  299. But Matthew says,

  300. he uses the word,

  301. they dwell in darkness.

  302. The word dwell means to sit,

  303. to sit down,

  304. to settle.

  305. And he's making a point.

  306. He's trying to say

  307. that the people in this area,

  308. they hadn't just switched off

  309. the light temporarily,

  310. but they were still up

  311. so they could switch it back on

  312. and see again.

  313. He's saying,

  314. they were so entrenched in darkness

  315. it was like Norway in winter time.

  316. There was no daylight.

  317. And they were never going to get back up

  318. out of their spiritual darkness.

  319. There is spiritual death

  320. hung over them like a shadow.

  321. Like a no hope slum.

  322. Many of you,

  323. maybe you feel like your workplaces

  324. feel like that.

  325. A toxic environment

  326. filled with self-interest and greed.

  327. Sometimes some of your family gatherings,

  328. you're worried about

  329. Chinese New Year coming up

  330. because they can feel like that.

  331. Places that sometimes feel so dark,

  332. you wonder,

  333. can light ever really break through

  334. in those places?

  335. That was Galilee.

  336. And just as we write off

  337. places and people,

  338. it's precisely into that place

  339. that Matthew says Jesus headed.

  340. And he says this,

  341. light has dawned.

  342. It's been a long night in Galilee,

  343. but the sun is beginning to rise

  344. over the horizon

  345. because Jesus is here.

  346. And because Jesus doesn't just go

  347. into the comfortable suburbs,

  348. he heads right into the place

  349. where he knows that the message

  350. of repentance,

  351. that the kingdom of God is near,

  352. is needed more than anywhere.

  353. Because he's saying the king

  354. and his kingdom is within reach.

  355. The king has arrived

  356. and when the king arrives,

  357. what does this king do?

  358. What does he do when he comes?

  359. And that's my second point.

  360. Jesus calls people to himself.

  361. You know, Kevin talked about repentance

  362. three weeks ago.

  363. And repentance is the entry point

  364. into coming into God's new kingdom,

  365. his new future,

  366. but it's also the ongoing life

  367. of those who are in God's kingdom.

  368. And Matthew wants to show us now

  369. what repentance looks like.

  370. So let's have a look at this story,

  371. which you're going to see

  372. from 18 through to 22.

  373. Jesus is out for a stroll

  374. by the lakeside,

  375. getting some air.

  376. And then he sees

  377. these two disciples,

  378. Simon and Andrew.

  379. And this isn't the first time

  380. Jesus has seen them.

  381. Because we know from John 2

  382. that he actually spent

  383. at least a whole day with them,

  384. maybe a bit more,

  385. so it's not cold.

  386. But these guys are right

  387. in the middle of their work day.

  388. Okay?

  389. But some of us think

  390. that the disciples

  391. are just these kind of

  392. poor working class people.

  393. But actually that's not true.

  394. The disciples,

  395. though they were uneducated,

  396. they were probably

  397. not desperately poor

  398. in their terms of that time.

  399. Because they have

  400. a small family fishing business,

  401. which we know from Mark 1,

  402. that actually they have

  403. employees as well.

  404. So this is like an SME.

  405. Okay?

  406. This is their small,

  407. medium business,

  408. and they're right in the middle

  409. of trying to get a catch

  410. to sustain their cash flow.

  411. This is the equivalent

  412. of them on the trading floor,

  413. them in the meeting room,

  414. them in the classroom,

  415. them in the hospital ward,

  416. them taking the kids to school.

  417. It's a normal day,

  418. it's the normal events

  419. that happen at work,

  420. they're fishermen,

  421. and Jesus comes along

  422. and he says,

  423. follow me,

  424. I will make you fishers of men.

  425. There's a few things

  426. that I want to pull out of this,

  427. because I want to really unpack

  428. this phrase,

  429. because this is dynamite

  430. if we get this.

  431. First thing that this says,

  432. who takes the initiative

  433. to call the disciples?

  434. Jesus does.

  435. Do you know,

  436. that was really unusual

  437. in that day,

  438. because if you had a rabbi,

  439. rabbis didn't go out

  440. to find disciples,

  441. they actually waited

  442. for disciples to come to them.

  443. And so,

  444. Jesus,

  445. though,

  446. where is he?

  447. Jesus is in Galilee,

  448. a place in darkness.

  449. Nobody's getting up

  450. to go and find him.

  451. And so,

  452. nobody there was going,

  453. Jesus,

  454. we'd love to be your disciple,

  455. please make us your disciple.

  456. They're not doing that.

  457. He is the one

  458. who has to reach out

  459. down to them

  460. in their darkness.

  461. That's actually the same

  462. for us.

  463. Do you know that?

  464. How many of you here

  465. saved yourself?

  466. No,

  467. because the only reason,

  468. if you are a Christian

  469. here today,

  470. the only reason

  471. you are a Christian

  472. is not because

  473. you made some smart

  474. intellectual decision

  475. to think,

  476. yeah,

  477. that sounds reasonable

  478. to me to follow Jesus.

  479. Okay,

  480. I'm going to do it.

  481. It's not that.

  482. The only reason

  483. you are a Christian,

  484. it's not because

  485. you were born

  486. in a Christian family.

  487. It's because

  488. Jesus called you

  489. and Jesus saved you.

  490. Nobody saves themselves

  491. and he's calling

  492. us today

  493. to himself,

  494. whether you are

  495. a Christian

  496. or not a Christian,

  497. again and again.

  498. But you know

  499. when Jesus calls you,

  500. it's the second thing.

  501. He's always

  502. going to disrupt

  503. your life.

  504. You see,

  505. the disciples

  506. didn't go away

  507. from meeting Jesus

  508. saying,

  509. oh,

  510. that was a nice

  511. time we had,

  512. nice guy.

  513. Let's just get

  514. back on with fishing.

  515. Because

  516. he says,

  517. he doesn't say

  518. either,

  519. follow me

  520. and all your

  521. problems

  522. are going

  523. to go away.

  524. Because you see,

  525. when you meet

  526. with Jesus,

  527. you will never be,

  528. and you truly

  529. follow his call,

  530. you will never be

  531. the same afterwards

  532. as you were before.

  533. There's always

  534. going to be a different

  535. before and after shot.

  536. He's coming

  537. to disrupt

  538. your life

  539. and your plans

  540. and your dreams.

  541. And if you're

  542. not living

  543. and feeling

  544. the tension

  545. with living

  546. for his kingdom,

  547. if you don't feel

  548. the disruption

  549. in some of the way

  550. that you wish

  551. your life was,

  552. then it may be

  553. you're actually

  554. not living

  555. for his kingdom

  556. at all.

  557. Because maybe

  558. you're just living

  559. for your own plans.

  560. Because Jesus

  561. is calling you today

  562. just like he was

  563. calling the disciples

  564. and he's going

  565. to call you

  566. to disrupt

  567. your life.

  568. Anyone

  569. still on board?

  570. Okay,

  571. second thing.

  572. Now,

  573. when he comes

  574. to disrupt

  575. your life,

  576. what's the call?

  577. The call is

  578. follow me

  579. and I will

  580. make you

  581. fishers of men.

  582. That was the call

  583. to these four

  584. men that day.

  585. It's the call

  586. to every person

  587. who throughout

  588. history,

  589. every other

  590. disciple

  591. that's the same

  592. call.

  593. And there are

  594. three words here

  595. which he calls

  596. these disciples

  597. to which would

  598. change their

  599. lives forever.

  600. Three words

  601. which if they

  602. had not responded

  603. positively to,

  604. we would not

  605. be here today

  606. talking about

  607. these people

  608. 2,000 years later.

  609. These are three

  610. words which

  611. everything changed.

  612. Do you know

  613. which three words

  614. they are?

  615. You see,

  616. some of you

  617. are confused

  618. because in

  619. English you

  620. only see two

  621. words which

  622. are follow me.

  623. But in Greek

  624. there are three

  625. words which

  626. literally are

  627. come after me

  628. or come behind

  629. me.

  630. That's what the

  631. Greek says.

  632. And so I want

  633. to spend a little

  634. bit of time

  635. unpacking these

  636. three words

  637. one by one

  638. because they are

  639. challenging words

  640. and we need to

  641. hear this.

  642. the first word

  643. is come.

  644. When I say

  645. come here,

  646. what am I

  647. doing?

  648. Okay,

  649. so does one.

  650. If I say come

  651. here, what am I

  652. doing?

  653. I'm giving you a

  654. command, right?

  655. I'm saying come

  656. here now.

  657. If I say come

  658. and join me,

  659. what am I doing?

  660. I'm inviting you.

  661. It's an invitation.

  662. What's common

  663. between a command

  664. and an invitation?

  665. Basically, we're

  666. trying audience

  667. participation here.

  668. Both of them

  669. require a response.

  670. Both of them

  671. require a response.

  672. You see, if you

  673. answer on Facebook

  674. maybe, that is

  675. not a response.

  676. Or in fact, it is

  677. a response.

  678. You're trying to

  679. postpone a response

  680. but actually your

  681. response is no,

  682. not now.

  683. Right?

  684. You see, Jesus

  685. also had other

  686. people.

  687. He said, follow me

  688. to some other

  689. people in Matthew

  690. 8 and they go,

  691. hey, I'm busy.

  692. I've got a family

  693. funeral.

  694. I've just got some

  695. work stuff.

  696. And Jesus is

  697. straight down the

  698. line.

  699. He goes, maybe

  700. and not now

  701. means no.

  702. It means I've got

  703. other priorities,

  704. not you.

  705. But do you notice

  706. in the passage

  707. what the response

  708. of the disciples

  709. is.

  710. It says, Simon

  711. and Andrew

  712. immediately, they

  713. left immediately.

  714. Do you see that?

  715. And then James

  716. and John in

  717. verse 20, it

  718. says, they

  719. immediately, they

  720. left.

  721. Do you see that?

  722. Immediately.

  723. 20 and 22.

  724. He's saying

  725. procrastination is

  726. not an option.

  727. Jesus is calling

  728. you today and you

  729. have to respond to

  730. him.

  731. How are we going

  732. to respond?

  733. That's the third

  734. thing.

  735. He takes the

  736. initiative.

  737. He responds.

  738. He's going to

  739. disrupt your life.

  740. He calls for a

  741. response.

  742. Next thing is the

  743. next word.

  744. After or behind.

  745. The response that

  746. we are to give is

  747. always a call to

  748. surrender to his

  749. leading.

  750. Because there were

  751. many, when Jesus

  752. says, follow me,

  753. follow after me,

  754. come after me,

  755. there were many

  756. rabbis at the

  757. time.

  758. And you could

  759. tell whose

  760. rabbis a person

  761. were by the

  762. behavior of the

  763. disciples.

  764. Because they'd

  765. seek to imitate

  766. their rabbi in

  767. everything.

  768. So if Rabbi

  769. Leo had a

  770. three-inch beard,

  771. then all of his

  772. disciples would

  773. have a three-inch

  774. beard.

  775. You've got to

  776. grow a little

  777. bit.

  778. If Rabbi

  779. Leo had a

  780. nervous twitch

  781. like this,

  782. and walking

  783. down the road

  784. you saw a

  785. whole load of

  786. people doing

  787. this, you

  788. would know

  789. they were all

  790. disciples of

  791. Rabbi Leo.

  792. You see, I

  793. visited Cambodia

  794. a couple of

  795. years ago.

  796. We went to a

  797. landmine museum.

  798. And one of the

  799. boards in the

  800. museum told the

  801. story of a guy

  802. called Aki Ra.

  803. And he'd been

  804. responsible for

  805. putting down

  806. landmines for

  807. the Khmer Rouge

  808. government.

  809. But then later

  810. on he felt such

  811. guilt for what

  812. he'd done that he

  813. actually became

  814. this kind of ninja

  815. landmine remover.

  816. So he would go

  817. out into landmines

  818. walking barefoot

  819. with just his

  820. hands and a

  821. stick, and he

  822. would remove

  823. thousands and

  824. thousands of

  825. landmines.

  826. And so when the

  827. UN expert landmine

  828. removers came in,

  829. they asked for his

  830. help.

  831. Because he knew

  832. everything.

  833. And so what

  834. happened was when

  835. he would go in

  836. front of all the

  837. other UN experts,

  838. and he would say,

  839. listen, just put

  840. your foot in the

  841. same place that I've

  842. put my foot.

  843. Just put your foot

  844. in the same place.

  845. Don't put it

  846. anywhere else.

  847. Because if you put

  848. it anywhere else,

  849. you may get blown

  850. to smithereens.

  851. You've got to put

  852. your footprint in

  853. my footprint, because

  854. I'm going to lead

  855. you into safety.

  856. You see, that is

  857. exactly what Jesus

  858. is saying here.

  859. when he says,

  860. follow me.

  861. Come after me.

  862. Don't think that to

  863. be a Christian is to

  864. get a ticket to

  865. heaven, and then you

  866. can kind of plot your

  867. own course through the

  868. minefield of life, and

  869. hope that maybe he can

  870. just give you some

  871. guidance occasionally

  872. when you're having a

  873. few problems.

  874. That is not

  875. Christianity, because

  876. you'll get blown up.

  877. God, I want you to

  878. He's saying, I want you

  879. to entrust and surrender

  880. every part of your life

  881. to me.

  882. Let me lead you.

  883. You are my path, is

  884. what he's saying.

  885. You are the shape and

  886. direction of my life, for

  887. my finances, for my

  888. relationships, for my

  889. work.

  890. That's what every

  891. believer would try to

  892. say, God, I want to

  893. discern where are you

  894. leading?

  895. Right now, in your

  896. life, where are you

  897. leading?

  898. I don't want to go my

  899. own way.

  900. I don't want to go the

  901. way that everyone else

  902. says.

  903. I want to go your way.

  904. The response is a call

  905. to surrender to his

  906. leading.

  907. Next, he takes the

  908. initiative.

  909. He's going to disrupt

  910. your life.

  911. He calls you to

  912. respond, and it's a

  913. call to respond in

  914. surrender.

  915. Then he said, the

  916. call of Jesus is

  917. costly.

  918. You know, these guys

  919. are fishermen.

  920. They're fishermen.

  921. Their money is in

  922. fish.

  923. No fish, no cash.

  924. That's their financial

  925. security.

  926. No food to feed their

  927. families if they don't

  928. get fish.

  929. And we know that right

  930. here, Peter is married

  931. as well because he's

  932. got a mother-in-law.

  933. So he's got a whole

  934. family to look after.

  935. And when Jesus says,

  936. come after me, follow

  937. me, he's asking him

  938. to put a blank check

  939. on the table and to

  940. say, Jesus, you can

  941. fill this in however

  942. you like.

  943. You can fill in my

  944. future how you like.

  945. You can fill in my

  946. career path how you

  947. like.

  948. You can fill in my bank

  949. balance how you like.

  950. You can, you know, I've

  951. got my savings plan.

  952. I've got my NPF.

  953. I've got my investments.

  954. But that's held loosely

  955. for you to guide me.

  956. And you can lead me

  957. anywhere.

  958. And for Peter and

  959. Andrew, that meant

  960. leaving behind their

  961. business dreams.

  962. I don't know what it's

  963. going to mean for you.

  964. But it's costly.

  965. You see, Jesus then

  966. walks along.

  967. He said, hey, your

  968. financial things to

  969. Peter and Andrew.

  970. But then he walks along

  971. and then he sees James

  972. and John.

  973. And they're there with

  974. their dad.

  975. And you notice in the

  976. passage, he actually

  977. repeats the dad's name

  978. twice.

  979. He says, he's the son

  980. of Zebedee.

  981. And then he calls him

  982. Zebedee.

  983. And then they say,

  984. their father twice.

  985. Because Matthew is

  986. making a point here.

  987. When he calls them to

  988. follow him, James and

  989. John are not only just

  990. walking off with Jesus

  991. and leaving behind all

  992. their potential cash in

  993. the nets behind them.

  994. They're also leaving the

  995. most precious thing in

  996. Jewish society, which was

  997. their family.

  998. Their dad had hopes and

  999. expectations for them, I'm

  1000. sure.

  1001. And probably most of

1002. those were tied up in the

  1003. family business.

1004. And so, in the dad's

  1005. opinion, really counted.

1006. A rebellious son was shame

  1007. on the family.

1008. And you think about it, for

1009. many of us, our parents'

  1010. opinion counts a lot.

1011. Some of us, it has carried

1012. so much weight over us that

1013. it actually has stifled our

1014. own call to follow Jesus.

1015. You know, you fear what they

1016. would say if ever you made a

1017. decision to adopt a child or

1018. to choose a different career

1019. path than they would expect.

1020. We live under the weight of

  1021. parental expectations.

1022. And Jesus is clear, we're

1023. meant to honor our parents,

1024. we're meant to listen to

1025. them because they have great

1026. wisdom, but your parents are

1027. not your ultimate guide in

  1028. life.

1029. Sometimes the call to follow

1030. Christ puts you in tension

1031. with even the most close

1032. people to you, even your

  1033. parents.

1034. And Jesus is saying, I'm

1035. calling you to put your feet

1036. after me, not just after your

  1037. mom or your dad.

  1038. And that's challenging.

  1039. That's challenging.

1040. But he's saying, will you

1041. write a blank check for me?

1042. Will you write a blank check

1043. and let me lead you?

  1044. Let me lead you.

  1045. Come after me.

  1046. You see, this is

  1047. challenging, right?

  1048. But our response

  1049. is based

  1050. on who

  1051. Jesus is.

1052. You see, Jesus isn't asking

1053. you to just leave everything

1054. for a series of doctrines.

  1055. You know, Islam

  1056. will tell you,

  1057. follow the Quran,

  1058. follow the five pillars.

  1059. Buddhism will tell you,

  1060. follow the ninefold path.

  1061. Judaism will tell you,

  1062. follow the law.

  1063. Marketism says,

  1064. follow the market analysts.

  1065. Careerism says,

  1066. follow whatever your boss

  1067. tells you.

  1068. Fashion.

  1069. Fashion.

  1070. Just think,

  1071. you're always a disciple

  1072. of somebody.

  1073. You're always a disciple

  1074. of somebody.

  1075. Fashion is just clothing

  1076. discipleship.

  1077. Right?

  1078. Culture is just society

  1079. discipleship.

  1080. Like, why does everyone

1081. in Hong Kong want to be

  1082. a lawyer, doctor, engineer,

1083. or finance and business guy?

  1084. Why?

  1085. We're just following along.

  1086. Right?

  1087. And look at actually

  1088. how that often enslaves

  1089. many of us

  1090. who actually wish

1091. we weren't one of those

  1092. but we've just been

  1093. shoved into that.

  1094. We're all disciples

  1095. of someone

  1096. because we've all

  1097. got to trust someone.

1098. But I'd like you to think

1099. if you received this text,

1100. I don't know if you can see that.

1101. Let me just move the curtain.

  1102. Hey Chris,

  1103. great meeting you

  1104. the other day.

1105. I want you to quit

  1106. your job,

  1107. your neighborhood,

  1108. and your family

  1109. and follow me

  1110. wherever I go.

  1111. Let me know

1112. by the end of the day.

  1113. What questions,

1114. if you received that text,

  1115. would be going

  1116. through your mind?

  1117. Sure.

  1118. Who are you?

  1119. Yes.

  1120. Yes.

  1121. Any other questions?

  1122. What do you want?

  1123. Yes.

  1124. Sorry.

  1125. Block.

  1126. Yes, block.

  1127. Why block?

  1128. Weird.

  1129. Yeah, like,

  1130. like,

  1131. where are you going?

  1132. Like,

1133. what's in it for me?

  1134. Yeah,

  1135. what do you want?

  1136. What about money?

  1137. What about my family?

1138. Are you going to just

  1139. mess up my life?

  1140. What if that's a scam?

  1141. What if you're just

1142. trying to play with me?

  1143. What if?

  1144. Right?

  1145. A lot of questions

  1146. we have.

  1147. Because doesn't

  1148. that kind of call

  1149. actually raise

1150. a whole load of fears

  1151. within us?

  1152. A whole load of

  1153. what ifs?

  1154. Because we don't

  1155. precisely know

  1156. A,

  1157. who this is

  1158. really

  1159. and where

  1160. they're taking us.

  1161. You see,

  1162. we want to have

  1163. the five-year plan

  1164. ahead of us.

  1165. But sometimes

  1166. in discipleship,

  1167. there's an element

  1168. of it's like a mist

1169. where you can just see

  1170. the two meters

  1171. in front of you.

  1172. It's uncertain.

  1173. And when you can't

  1174. see your way,

  1175. we often try and

  1176. clutch onto the things

1177. that we feel are secure.

  1178. But the call

  1179. of discipleship

  1180. is always

  1181. the call

  1182. to answer

  1183. those two questions.

  1184. Who are you

1185. and can I trust you?

  1186. Who are you

1187. and can I trust you?

  1188. That is the

  1189. ultimate questions

  1190. for deciding

  1191. a discipleship.

  1192. You know,

  1193. who here has ever

  1194. played Assassin's Creed?

  1195. Okay,

  1196. this is admission time.

  1197. Mike has.

  1198. You know who

  1199. the original

  1200. Assassins were?

  1201. The original

  1202. Assassins were

  1203. not a video game.

1204. They were a Muslim sect

  1205. which had,

  1206. at one point,

  1207. they had one leader

  1208. who to prove

  1209. his authority

  1210. to people around him

  1211. would,

  1212. when they came up

  1213. to him,

  1214. he would order

  1215. some of his followers

1216. to just jump off a cliff

  1217. at his command.

  1218. And they would follow.

  1219. They would run

  1220. and they would jump

  1221. off a cliff

  1222. to their death.

  1223. I think that's

  1224. sometimes what we

  1225. think God is like.

  1226. We actually think

  1227. that this call

  1228. is actually a call

1229. to either make my life

  1230. miserable,

  1231. lonely,

  1232. hard,

1233. or just make me suffer.

  1234. You're going to ruin

  1235. my life.

  1236. Because

  1237. we maybe know

  1238. the doctrine

  1239. about who Jesus

  1240. is up here,

  1241. but we don't really

  1242. know who are you?

  1243. Can I trust you?

1244. And the whole of Matthew

1245. in his first four chapters

  1246. has been trying

  1247. to tell us

  1248. again and again

  1249. who Jesus is

1250. so that we can say

  1251. I can trust you.

  1252. You know,

  1253. in a world

  1254. where every politician,

  1255. every boss,

  1256. every spouse,

  1257. every friend

  1258. will let you down

  1259. at some point,

  1260. Matthew says

  1261. he's the promised Messiah

  1262. who is always faithful

  1263. to his word.

  1264. He always delivers

  1265. on his promises

  1266. and he will never

  1267. use or manipulate you.

  1268. Do you know him?

  1269. In a lonely world

  1270. where we're craving

  1271. acceptance and love,

  1272. Jesus draws near

  1273. as Emmanuel,

  1274. the creator God,

  1275. God with us

  1276. to love us,

  1277. to save us,

  1278. to deliver us.

  1279. Do you know him?

  1280. In a world

  1281. which is power hungry,

  1282. filled with nationalism,

  1283. filled with division,

  1284. filled with self-interest,

1285. Jesus is the global king

  1286. who calls people

  1287. from all nations

  1288. in unity

1289. to come and worship him.

1290. In a world of injustice

  1291. with families

  1292. and communities

  1293. torn apart

  1294. by greed

  1295. and oppression,

  1296. Jesus is the

  1297. unbribable judge

1298. who has a winnowing fork

  1299. in his hand

  1300. and he will bring

  1301. justice to bear

  1302. on this world.

  1303. Heaven and hell

  1304. are in his hands.

  1305. Do you know him?

1306. In a world of indulgence

  1307. and faithlessness

  1308. and where we lack

  1309. self-control,

  1310. Jesus is the faithful,

  1311. obedient one

  1312. who has never failed.

  1313. Do you know him?

  1314. In a world

  1315. where it's every man

  1316. who seeks to exalt

  1317. themselves,

  1318. Jesus humbles himself,

  1319. identifies with us

  1320. in his baptism,

  1321. in our weakness,

  1322. takes our sin

  1323. on the cross

  1324. to lift us up

  1325. and bring him

  1326. to himself.

  1327. Do you know him?

  1328. In a world

  1329. where the strong

  1330. eat the weak,

1331. Jesus is the tender king

  1332. who will not break

  1333. a bruised reed,

  1334. but he lifts up

  1335. those of us

  1336. who right now

  1337. feel crushed

  1338. and broken.

  1339. In a world

  1340. where we're called

  1341. to be disciples

  1342. of fashion

  1343. and technology

  1344. for the sake

  1345. of increasing

  1346. business profit margin,

  1347. Jesus is calling you

  1348. to himself

  1349. for the sake

  1350. of his glory

  1351. and your good.

  1352. Do you know him?

  1353. Do you know him?

  1354. It was 1783.

  1355. George Washington

  1356. was facing a mutiny

  1357. from his troops.

  1358. They hadn't been paid

  1359. for ages.

  1360. And they were refusing

  1361. to fight for him

  1362. and they were

  1363. on the verge

1364. of going to the parliament

  1365. to overthrow the parliament

1366. to get what they wanted.

  1367. Washington stood up

1368. and he made a speech

  1369. to try and persuade

  1370. all of his troops

  1371. to trust him

  1372. and to follow him.

  1373. But they refused

  1374. to listen.

  1375. None of them trusted.

1376. And then at one moment

1377. he went to get a letter

  1378. from a senator

  1379. to prove

  1380. that the troops

1381. were going to get paid.

  1382. And as he did

  1383. he pulled out

  1384. of his pocket,

1385. he fumbled in his pocket

1386. and he kind of pulled out

  1387. a pair of glasses

1388. that not one of his

  1389. even closest officers

1390. had ever seen him wear.

  1391. And as he pulled

  1392. and opened the letter

  1393. and held it up

  1394. he said this,

  1395. he said,

  1396. Gentlemen,

  1397. I,

  1398. you must pardon me

  1399. for I have grown

  1400. not only grey

  1401. but blind

  1402. in the service

  1403. of my country.

  1404. All the troops

  1405. were stunned.

  1406. Many just started weeping.

  1407. Washington read

  1408. the letter

  1409. and he walked out

  1410. within ten minutes

  1411. the mutiny

  1412. was called off.

  1413. Every troop

  1414. swore allegiance

  1415. to Washington

  1416. because they trusted him.

  1417. Because they saw

  1418. who he was

  1419. and the sacrifice

  1420. he had paid

  1421. for this cause.

  1422. He wasn't just

  1423. saying words.

1424. He had paid for it

1425. with his very own body

  1426. and his life.

  1427. Jesus didn't just

  1428. grow old,

  1429. didn't just grow blind

  1430. and grey for us.

  1431. He died

  1432. for you and me

  1433. on a cross.

1434. He's not going to call you

1435. to jump off a cliff

  1436. because he's already

  1437. jumped off the cliff

  1438. for you.

  1439. He's already taken

  1440. the hit for you

  1441. and for me

  1442. though we did not

  1443. deserve it

1444. so that he can lead you

  1445. to safety

  1446. and wholeness

  1447. and freedom

1448. to the kingdom of God

  1449. that he wants you

  1450. to be involved

  1451. and be part of.

  1452. And so he calls

  1453. every single one

  1454. of us today.

  1455. Will you follow me?

  1456. It's a costly call.

  1457. It's a call

1458. to go into the unknown

  1459. wherever he leads.

  1460. But it's a call

  1461. to trust the one

  1462. who has loved you

  1463. more than anyone

  1464. has ever loved you

  1465. or ever will.

  1466. Will you follow?

  1467. Will you follow?

  1468. You know,

  1469. as I've been reflecting

  1470. on this,

  1471. I realize

  1472. how so many

  1473. of my fears

  1474. come from that fact

  1475. that I don't really

  1476. know him well.

  1477. And my prayer,

  1478. I've been a Christian

  1479. over 30 years.

  1480. I can never assume

  1481. that I already

  1482. know him enough.

  1483. Is our prayer

  1484. that we want

  1485. to know him more

1486. so we can trust him

  1487. more so that we

  1488. can walk with him?

  1489. If you are not

  1490. a Christian today,

  1491. he's calling you

  1492. to respond to him.

  1493. Some of you

  1494. have been in church

  1495. for a long time.

  1496. You know the message,

  1497. but you've been saying

  1498. maybe.

  1499. Today is a day

  1500. where God says,

  1501. no, today I'm calling

1502. you to respond to me.

  1503. Will you lay down

1504. and write that blank check

  1505. in repentance

  1506. and say,

1507. I want you to lead me

  1508. wherever.

  1509. Forgive me for leading

  1510. my own life

  1511. my own way.

  1512. Some of you

  1513. may have more questions.

  1514. We're going to be

  1515. starting a Christianity

  1516. Explored course

1517. in a few weeks' time

  1518. in March.

  1519. That's going to be

  1520. an opportunity

  1521. for you to respond

  1522. and just say,

  1523. I want to come

  1524. to know Jesus

  1525. more.

  1526. But if you're

  1527. a Christian

  1528. this morning,

  1529. I don't know

  1530. where you are.

  1531. I don't know

  1532. what God has been

  1533. saying to you,

  1534. but I know

  1535. that he is calling

  1536. you right now

  1537. with whatever

  1538. you're wrestling with

  1539. to lay that blank

  1540. check on the table

  1541. and to say,

  1542. Jesus,

  1543. you can take me.

  1544. I surrender

  1545. to you today.

  1546. Would you lead me?

  1547. That's what repentance

  1548. looks like.

  1549. That's what repentance

  1550. looks like.

  1551. It's a daily thing.

1552. I was going to share

  1553. another point,

  1554. but I think I'm going to

  1555. just stop

  1556. and allow us

1557. just to close your eyes

  1558. for a minute.

  1559. I want you

  1560. just to ask God,

  1561. where are you

  1562. calling me today?

  1563. Where are you

  1564. calling me?

  1565. And I want you

  1566. right now

  1567. to just do

  1568. some business

  1569. with God.

  1570. Just lay before him

  1571. your life.

  1572. Lay before him

  1573. the things which

  1574. have been wrapping

  1575. you up.

  1576. Lay before him

  1577. the things which

  1578. have consumed you.

  1579. Are you willing

  1580. to say,

  1581. as he's calling you

  1582. to follow him,

  1583. to lay down

  1584. with open hands

  1585. to say,

  1586. God,

  1587. would you speak

  1588. to me?

  1589. Jesus,

  1590. I want you

  1591. to lead me

  1592. wherever.

  1593. And I'm scared,

1594. but I can trust you

  1595. because you're good.

  1596. If the musicians

1597. just want to come up.

  1598. You know,

  1599. some of us,

  1600. we've been saying,

  1601. oh, Jesus,

  1602. you would never

  1603. call me to

  1604. dot, dot, dot.

  1605. You would never

  1606. call me

  1607. to take a

  1608. lower-paid job.

  1609. You'd never

  1610. call me

  1611. to quit my job.

  1612. You'd never

  1613. call me

  1614. to place

  1615. my kids

  1616. in a school

  1617. which none

  1618. of my peers

  1619. would dream

  1620. of sending

  1621. their kids

  1622. to.

  1623. Jesus,

  1624. you'd never

  1625. call me

  1626. to move

  1627. to a less

  1628. comfortable

  1629. neighborhood.

1630. We say that a lot.

  1631. Jesus,

  1632. you'd never.

  1633. But if you're

  1634. laying a blank

  1635. check before him

  1636. today,

  1637. just give him

  1638. all the you

  1639. would nevers

  1640. and just say,

  1641. you can lead me.

  1642. And for some

  1643. of that,

  1644. that will be

  1645. him leading

  1646. you on his

  1647. mission,

  1648. maybe to

  1649. another country,

  1650. maybe into

  1651. ministry.

  1652. For some

  1653. of you,

  1654. that will be

  1655. leading you

  1656. into Morgan

  1657. Stanley,

  1658. leading you

  1659. into the

  1660. hospital,

  1661. leading you

  1662. into the

  1663. Chinese New

  1664. Year

  1665. gatherings,

  1666. with a heart

  1667. to pray for

  1668. those who

  1669. don't know

  1670. him.

  1671. with a heart

  1672. to be his

  1673. instrument,

  1674. as he goes

  1675. into the

  1676. darkness,

  1677. that you

  1678. will be

  1679. there

  1680. following

  1681. him

  1682. as a

  1683. light,

  1684. because he

  1685. loves the

  1686. people around

  1687. you.

  1688. But I

  1689. maybe ask

  1690. even just

  1691. in the

  1692. prayer team

  1693. if you'd

  1694. like to

  1695. come

  1696. forward.

  1697. I think

  1698. that maybe

  1699. some of

  1700. you,

  1701. God's

  1702. just

  1703. speaking

  1704. to you

  1705. right

  1706. now,

  1707. and you

  1708. just need

  1709. to come

  1710. forward to

  1711. have

  1712. prayer.

  1713. Maybe

  1714. there are

  1715. things you

  1716. feel like

  1717. you've been

  1718. holding on

  1719. to for a

  1720. long time.

  1721. Maybe you've

  1722. been saying

  1723. no,

  1724. you've been

  1725. saying maybe,

  1726. you've been

  1727. saying wait.

  1728. Maybe you

  1729. just come and

  1730. say,

  1731. Jesus,

  1732. I need to

  1733. know you

  1734. more.

  1735. I just

  1736. need to

  1737. know you

  1738. more.

  1739. Show me

  1740. yourself.

  1741. Father,

  1742. thank you

  1743. that your

  1744. love for

  1745. us is

  1746. immeasurable.

  1747. And yet we

  1748. are so afraid

  1749. sometimes to

  1750. follow you

  1751. because it

  1752. feels like,

  1753. it feels

  1754. sometimes that

  1755. our own

  1756. securities are

  1757. more trustworthy

  1758. than you who

  1759. have given

  1760. everything for

  1761. us.

  1762. forgive us,

  1763. change our

  1764. hearts.

  1765. Would we

  1766. hear and

  1767. see you

  1768. this week

  1769. and immediately

  1770. follow you?

  1771. Father,

  1772. have your

  1773. way.

  1774. Thank you

  1775. that you're

  1776. so good to

  1777. us.

  1778. We love

  1779. you.

  1780. Jesus'

  1781. name.

  1782. Amen.
