  1. Well, welcome everybody. My name is Kevin, if you don't know, and we're going to have a time of praying now.

  2. We pray every week for our city and our church, and this morning we're going to do something a little bit differently.

  3. I just came back last night from Singapore. I was there with Jeremy and Julie. There should be a photo.

  4. And a bunch of other pastors and church leaders from around Asia.

  5. There were some of us from people from Singapore, from Tokyo, from Nagoya in Japan, from Thailand, from Australia.

  6. And we're getting together for three days to talk about what would it look like for churches in Asia to strengthen each other, encourage each other, and work together.

  7. And so there's a whole bunch of us that were in Singapore this week.

  8. And so what I want us to do is every Sunday when we have our pastoral prayer, we normally pray for one other church in Hong Kong.

  9. Whether it's community church, or Ireland, or DBICC, or whatever it is.

  10. This morning I want us to pray for this guy on the second from the back.

  11. Okay, here's another photo. His name is Ryuta, and there's his wife Paddy and their two daughters.

  12. That's an old photo. Their daughters have grown up.

  13. And Ryuta Kumira is from Tokyo, and they planted Double O Cross Church.

  14. That's how you spell the church, Double O Cross.

  15. And so we're going to pray for them this morning.

  16. And so as we pray, why don't you join me as we pray for Ryuta, their church they planted five years ago.

  17. And they're doing a great job in Tokyo City.

  18. And so just to let you know why we're going to be praying for them.

  19. Okay, we're going to pray for our friends in Tokyo.

  20. So let's pray as a church together.

  21. Now remember, we're all praying together.

  22. This isn't just me. This is us praying.

  23. And so will you join me as we pray together?

  24. Heavenly Father, this morning as a church family, we've gathered to meet with you, the living God,

  25. to pour out our praises and our worship to you, to declare that you are the one true God,

  26. you are heaven and earth's true king.

  27. And God, even though your kingdom has come in a small way on earth,

  28. we've come to sing about and to proclaim and to declare that we believe you are the true king,

  29. that your kingdom will come in finality one day.

  30. And we long for that day, God.

  31. We've come to say that you are God and you alone are good.

  32. You alone are worthy of our worship and our devotion.

  33. So often, Father, we get seduced by ideas and thoughts and the worldview of our city and our culture.

  34. Father, this morning, God, won't you rightly align our hearts to truth?

  35. Won't you shape our hearts with the gospel, Lord?

  36. Won't you remind us of who you are and your ways, Lord God?

  37. God, let your kingdom come.

  38. Let your will be done in our hearts and in Hong Kong, we pray, God.

  39. Father, thank you for this financial worship and the tide that has been given.

  40. We really do thank you, Father, for the resources you've given each one of us.

  41. We acknowledge that all of our resources come from you.

  42. And, God, we want to steward them for your glory.

  43. And so help us as a church and individually to do so.

  44. Give us this day our daily bread, we pray, God.

  45. Father, this morning, we want to pray for Ryuta and Paddy and all at Double O Cross Church in Tokyo.

  46. Thank you, Father, for their love for the gospel,

  47. their passion to see many Japanese men and women in Tokyo

  48. coming to experience the life and the power and the freedom found in Jesus.

  49. Father, thank you that Double O Cross is such a healthy church, such a wonderful church,

  50. which loves your word and loves Jesus and loves the gospel and loves the city of Tokyo.

  51. Father, we pray that they will continue to make disciples and disciple them in the gospel.

  52. Fathers, they look for a venue.

  53. Won't you provide a great venue for them?

  54. They look to start an afternoon congregation.

  55. Won't you give them leaders?

  56. Father, we pray.

  57. God, won't you bless their labors?

  58. Anoint them.

  59. Won't you give them fruit?

  60. Father, we stand with our brothers and sisters across the waters and say,

  61. God, won't you bless that church?

  62. We pray, God.

  63. Lead them as to where to go and when to start.

  64. And won't you give them leaders for this new meeting?

  65. We pray, God.

  66. Fathers of church, we ask you to send us a youth pastor at Watermark

  67. as we look for someone to lead and disciple our teenagers.

  68. God, we bring this before you and we ask you for this, Lord.

  69. We really do long, God, that our youth and our teenagers will be discipled in the gospel

  70. and will come to know you, Lord, and love you

  71. and be rock solid in the midst of a changing culture

  72. and a culture that's telling them to be anything and do anything.

  73. God, that they will know the truth and they'll build their lives upon you.

  74. And so we ask you, God, won't you provide for us as a church in this regard?

  75. God, we pray all these things in your wonderful name.

  76. Amen.

  77. Amen.

  78. Let's listen to the reading of God's word as Arlene is going to come and read for us.

  79. The scripture reading comes from Matthew chapters 4 and 5.

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  80. Please follow along in your bulletins or on the screen.

  81. And he went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues

  82. and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom

  83. and healing every disease and every affliction among the people.

  84. So his fame spread throughout all Syria.

  85. And they brought him all the sick,

  86. those afflicted with various diseases and pains,

  87. those oppressed by demons,

  88. those having seizures and paralytics.

  89. And he held them.

  90. And great crowds followed him from Galilee and the Decapolis

  91. and from Jerusalem and Judea

  92. and from beyond the Jordan.

  93. Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain.

  94. And when he sat down, his disciples came to him.

  95. And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying,

  96. Blessed are the poor in spirit,

  97. for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  98. Blessed are those who mourn,

  99. for they shall be comforted.

  100. Blessed are the meek,

  101. for they shall inherit the earth.

  102. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,

  103. for they shall be satisfied.

  104. Blessed are the merciful,

  105. for they shall receive mercy.

  106. Blessed are the pure in heart,

  107. for they shall see God.

  108. Blessed are the peacemakers,

  109. for they shall be called sons of God.

  110. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake,

  111. for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  112. Blessed are you when others revile you

  113. and persecute you

  114. and utter all kinds of evil

  115. against you falsely on my account.

  116. Rejoice and be glad,

  117. for your reward is great in heaven.

  118. For so they persecuted the prophets

  119. who were before you.

  120. This is the word of God.

  121. Great. Thank you, Arlene.

  122. Okay.

  123. Well, if you are new to Watermark this morning,

  124. we are working our way through the book of Matthew,

  125. Matthew's Gospel.

  126. And Matthew's Gospel is all about Jesus,

  127. the fact that he is the king,

  128. and he's come to bring a new kingdom.

  129. But his kingdom is upside down.

  130. It's often very different to the way that we would expect

  131. and the kingdoms of this world.

  132. And we're going to see this preeminently

  133. as we go through the Sermon on the Mount,

  134. which is where we find ourselves today.

  135. Now, before this,

  136. Chris preached last week

  137. and showed how Jesus,

  138. after his time of preparation in the wilderness,

  139. he launches his ministry with an announcement.

  140. And this is his announcement.

  141. Turn from your sin and turn to God,

  142. for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

  143. And what does that mean?

  144. Why is the kingdom of heaven at hand?

  145. Well, it's at hand because the king has arrived,

  146. because King Jesus has come.

  147. And so Jesus then goes

  148. and immediately he calls some people to follow him,

  149. to give up their previous way of life

  150. and to follow him in whatever he says

  151. and where he calls him to.

  152. And so right at the beginning of Jesus' ministry,

  153. we hear this call.

  154. It's the call of the gospel

  155. to turn from our sin and to follow Jesus.

  156. And then after that,

  157. we get to this most famous

  158. and wonderful passage of Scripture

  159. in the New Testament,

  160. the Sermon on the Mount.

  161. Now, in order to understand the Sermon on the Mount,

  162. let's just zoom back a little bit

  163. and understand the context of what's going on here.

  164. And so just before,

  165. look at chapter four with me at verse 23.

  166. It should be in your bulletins.

  167. Look at the last paragraph in your Bible

  168. before the Sermon on the Mount.

  169. And verse 23 says this.

  170. It says,

  171. He, that's Jesus,

  172. went throughout all Galilee

  173. and doing three things,

  174. or two things.

  175. Teaching in their synagogues,

  176. proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom,

  177. and healing every disease

  178. and every affliction amongst the people.

  179. Okay, you see that?

  180. Jesus went throughout doing these things.

  181. Preaching, teaching,

  182. and healing people of their diseases.

  183. When we jump a few chapters later

  184. in Matthew chapter nine and verse 35,

  185. there's almost the exact same description,

  186. almost word for word.

  187. Look at what it says.

  188. Jesus went throughout all the cities

  189. and the villages,

  190. teaching in their synagogues,

  191. proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom,

  192. and healing every disease and affliction.

  193. You see that?

  194. So here in these,

  195. chapter four,

  196. we've got this description of Jesus' ministry.

  197. In chapter nine,

  198. we've got this description.

  199. And there's two kind of main things that he did.

  200. He was preaching and teaching,

  201. proclaiming,

  202. explaining what does the kingdom of God look like,

  203. and doing miraculous works of power,

  204. demonstrating what does it look like

  205. when the kingdom of God breaks into your life.

  206. It changes you.

  207. It comes with power.

  208. And in between chapter four and chapter nine,

  209. there are two bodies of teaching,

  210. or two sections.

  211. One is Matthew chapter five to seven,

  212. the Sermon on the Mount,

  213. which is a summary of everything

  214. that he taught and preached and proclaimed.

  215. And chapters eight and nine,

  216. there's about eight or nine different stories

  217. of miraculous healings.

  218. Jesus casting out demons,

  219. healing people from sickness,

  220. raising the dead.

  221. And do you see what Matthew's doing here?

  222. He's showing us these two bookends.

  223. Jesus' ministry consisted of preaching

  224. and teaching the kingdom,

  225. and miraculous signs and wonders.

  226. And in between these two bookends,

  227. he shows us what did that look like.

  228. What did it look like?

  229. It looked like the Sermon on the Mount,

  230. and it looked like miraculous,

  231. powerful acts of demonstration of his kingdom.

  232. And so what is the Sermon on the Mount?

  233. Well, Jesus didn't just stand up on a mountainside

  234. and say, just listen to me,

  235. and for 45 minutes,

  236. you know, Matthew copied verbatim,

  237. word for word, what Jesus said.

  238. The Sermon on the Mount, in many ways,

  239. is a summary teaching of what Jesus said

  240. as he went throughout the villages

  241. and the cities of Galilee,

  242. proclaiming and teaching and preaching,

  243. the kingdom of God has come,

  244. and this is what life in the kingdom looks like.

  245. Okay?

  246. And so in many ways,

  247. the Sermon on the Mount

  248. isn't just this phenomenal moral teaching

  249. about turning the other cheek

  250. or taking the log out of your eye

  251. or how to pray.

  252. It's not just this one-hit wonder

  253. where Jesus, you know,

  254. the stars aligned,

  255. the lights were on him,

  256. and he just preached the best sermon of his life.

  257. In many ways,

  258. it's a collection of the things that Jesus taught

  259. as he went throughout the villages

  260. and the towns,

  261. teaching what life as he purposed it,

  262. life in the kingdom looks like.

  263. But there's something else about the Sermon on the Mount.

  264. It's also more than that.

  265. In many ways,

  266. the Sermon on the Mount

  267. is an answer to one of humanity's

  268. greatest and deepest and oldest questions.

  269. The question that human beings have asked for centuries is,

  270. how can I experience true human flourishing?

  271. What is happiness?

  272. What does it mean to live the blessed life?

  273. What is a good life anyway?

  274. How do I experience human flourishing

  275. and how do I keep it?

  276. How do I obtain it?

  277. So it's not just a once-off experience,

  278. but how do I experience a human flourishing ongoingly?

  279. And in many ways,

  280. the Sermon on the Mount

  281. is an answer to that question.

  282. Now, let's think about this question for a bit.

  283. What is happiness?

  284. What is blessedness?

  285. What does the flourishing life look like?

  286. I don't know what you would say,

  287. but in our culture,

  288. we've got many answers to that

  289. on a superficial level.

  290. For some of us,

  291. maybe a flourishing life

  292. means to be a person of great success,

  293. to achieve success in our chosen field

  294. or our career,

  295. to be at the top of our game,

  296. to be at the top of the class,

  297. top of the list,

  298. to achieve our goals in our vocations.

  299. Maybe for some of us,

  300. a flourishing, successful life

  301. is to be well admired and well respected,

  302. to get to the end of our days

  303. and our family and our children

  304. and our grandchildren

  305. look up to us as somebody respectable,

  306. somebody who's lived a good life.

  307. Maybe for some of us,

  308. it means no relational strife.

  309. Everybody likes you.

  310. Everybody gets on well with you.

  311. Everybody admires you and likes you

  312. and there's no relational tension.

  313. You get on with everybody around you.

  314. Maybe it means having your dreams fulfilled

  315. or maybe it just means

  316. living a contented and a comfortable life.

  317. It is no heartache and no difficulties.

  318. Whatever shape or form it is,

  319. while there's many superficial forms,

  320. all of us long for this flourishing,

  321. this blessedness, this happy life,

  322. which in many ways involves

  323. having the difficulties

  324. and the obstacles to happiness

  325. removed from our lives

  326. and going through life

  327. without encountering too many difficulties.

  328. It's what makes me happy

  329. and what advances my life.

  330. I get to do that.

  331. And this isn't just a modern thing.

  332. This is what we've believed throughout the ages.

  333. There's interesting,

  334. there's a Jewish rabbi and teacher

  335. by the name of Basira.

  336. I think that's how you say it.

  337. Jesus Basira.

  338. And he lived 150 years before Jesus.

  339. He was one of the most respected

  340. and well-loved Jewish rabbis of his time.

  341. And Sarah came up with a list of blessings

  342. of what a flourishing life looks like.

  343. This is one of his most famous poems.

  344. Look at what he says here.

  345. He says,

  346. There are nine that I would call blessed,

  347. a tenth that my tongue would proclaim.

  348. Blessed is the man who can rejoice with his children.

  349. Blessed is the man who lives to see the downfall of his foes.

  350. Blessed is the man who does not sin with his tongue.

  351. Blessed is the one who does not serve an inferior.

  352. Blessed is the man who finds a friend.

  353. Blessed is the one who speaks to attentive listeners.

  354. Greatest is the one who finds wisdom.

  355. And none is superior to the one who fears the Lord.

  356. Now, when we read that,

  357. part of that feels like,

  358. yeah, that sounds like my life.

  359. That's what I would like, right?

  360. Blessed is the man who can rejoice with his children.

  361. Blessed is the man that finds a friend.

  362. That sounds like the things that our culture would esteem.

  363. There's some things in here that even sound a little bit like Jesus, right?

  364. Stuff like the man who does not sin with his tongue,

  365. or the one who finds wisdom or fears the Lord.

  366. Yeah, there's some good things in there.

  367. But then there's also a couple of lines that are a little bit interesting, right?

  368. Things like the man who does not serve an inferior,

  369. or the man who lives to see the downfall of his enemies.

  370. Now, I think like Oscar was saying earlier,

  371. these are the kind of things that we shouldn't really say, right?

  372. It's not very politically correct to say,

  373. I hope at the end of my life to have seen the downfall of my enemies.

  374. I really got them under my foot, right?

  375. But just like the musician who had a good front and came to church

  376. and performed in front of many,

  377. and yet would go back to his hotel room at night,

  378. and the demons would come out.

  379. If we're honest, there's a little bit of that inside each one of us.

  380. Each one of us, at times, thinks,

  381. yeah, I want to get to the top of the class.

  382. And maybe I might need to stamp on a couple of others along the way.

  383. Sometimes we might think,

  384. this sounds just like the young people these days.

  385. So individualistic.

  386. ICF students.

  387. I mean, I can't believe how self-centered and individualistic they are, right?

  388. Young people these days.

  389. They really don't make them like they're used to in the good old days, right?

  390. But here, but hang on.

  391. Here's a guy from 2,000 years ago.

  392. One of the most respected leaders in a society, in a culture.

  393. And what's he saying?

  394. He's saying, blessed is one who doesn't serve an inferior.

  395. Blessed is one that can see the downfall of his enemies.

  396. Why?

  397. Because at a deepest heart level, that's exactly what we think.

  398. How do I experience human flourishing?

  399. Well, the answer that our culture says is,

  400. hey, find some friends.

  401. Rejoice with your children.

  402. Have a big growing family.

  403. Try not to sin too much.

  404. And make sure that you get on top.

  405. Make sure that at the end of the day,

  406. you're on top of your enemies.

  407. You're on top of the class.

  408. You succeed in your career.

  409. Ray Ortlund is a pastor in Nashville, Tennessee.

  410. And he wrote an amazing article about the Beatitudes.

  411. And he says that there's a modern version as well.

  412. He calls them the un-Beatitudes.

  413. Look at what he says.

  414. He says,

  415. This is the Beatitudes of our day and age.

  416. Congratulations to the entitled.

  417. They will grab what they want.

  418. Congratulations to the carefree.

  419. They will be comfortable.

  420. Congratulations to the pushy.

  421. They will win in the end.

  422. Congratulations to the greedy.

  423. They will climb to the top.

  424. Congratulations to the vengeful.

  425. For they will be feared.

  426. Congratulations to those who don't get caught.

  427. They will look good.

  428. Congratulations to the argumentative.

  429. They will get the last word.

  430. Congratulations to the popular.

  431. For this world lies at their feet.

  432. Ray Ortlund asks this penetrating question at the end.

  433. He says,

  434. Have you ever met one person

  435. who believed and lived by the world's un-Beatitudes

  436. and came to the end of their life

  437. a satisfied, vibrant, radiant, wise human being?

  438. Have you met even one?

  439. And friends, that leads to the problem of this worldview.

  440. It's a worldview.

  441. It's a system of beliefs which cannot deliver on its promises.

  442. It will promise you the world.

  443. It will promise you satisfaction.

  444. But it cannot deliver that.

  445. It will promise you both power and purpose.

  446. And yet it cannot deliver.

  447. It will promise you peace and contentment.

  448. And yet you'll end up anxious and worried all the time.

  449. You might remember that famous commencement speech

  450. by David Foster Wallace a few years ago in the U.S.

  451. He said this.

  452. He says,

  453. If you worship beauty and good looks,

  454. you'll spend your whole life worrying

  455. that you're ugly and unattractive.

  456. If you think that human flourishing and peace

  457. are found in power and control,

  458. you'll always feel insecure in your positions of authority.

  459. If you strive for money and possessions,

  460. if you think that's where human flourishing is found,

  461. you'll never feel like you have enough

  462. and always be anxious for more.

  463. Friends, have we found one person

  464. who believed and lived by the world's unbeatitudes

  465. and got to the end of their life

  466. a satisfied, radiant, wise human being?

  467. Have you found even one?

  468. Jesus answers this question.

  469. How can we find human flourishing?

  470. How can I be a salient, satisfied, radiant, wise person?

  471. And Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount

  472. gives a very simple and yet a very profound answer.

  473. And his answer is this.

  474. His answer is that it's not found in acquiring possessions.

  475. A flourishing life is not found in accumulating many things.

  476. It's not found in positions of authority or influence.

  477. It's not even found in accessing opportunities and education.

  478. Jesus answers that true human flourishing,

  479. true human happiness,

  480. the blessed life is really found in knowing the God who made you

  481. through Jesus Christ who died on the cross

  482. to secure that knowledge, that relationship,

  483. empowered by the Holy Spirit.

  484. And that this flourishing is only going to be experienced

  485. through faithful, heart deep,

  486. whole person following of Jesus as Christ the King

  487. in a community of his followers.

  488. In other words, Jesus says,

  489. the way we get to experience true human flourishing

  490. is as we come to Christ the King,

  491. we get our hearts shaped by the gospel

  492. and then we live out our lives in the kingdom of God

  493. with the community of his followers.

  494. And the Sermon on the Mount is his invitation

  495. to come and experience that.

  496. It's his invitation with a promise.

  497. It's an unusual promise,

  498. but it's his invitation to come and experience life in the kingdom

  499. as we follow Jesus the King with all of our lives.

  500. But it starts off, Jesus tells us,

  501. with the most provocative description of the upside down nature of the kingdom.

  502. And so let's see what Jesus says.

  503. And so look at what he says here in Matthew chapter 5.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  504. He says this,

  505. Blessed are the poor in spirit.

  506. Now, when Jesus used the word blessed,

  507. he's not speaking a blessing.

  508. He's kind of saying,

  509. How blessed!

  510. How fortunate!

  511. It's almost like he's saying,

  512. How lucky are those that are poor in spirit.

  513. How lucky, how fortunate are those that are humble and unassuming.

  514. To be poor means you don't have much resources, right?

  515. Jesus is saying,

  516. How fortunate are those that don't have much spiritual capital?

  517. Right?

  518. When they come to the table,

  519. they aren't middle class with spiritual capital.

  520. They don't have resources.

  521. They come empty-handed to God and say,

  522. Father, I've got nothing.

  523. Oh, how fortunate are those that are poor in spirit.

  524. For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  525. Oh, how fortunate are those who mourn.

  526. Those who are disturbed or even broken

  527. by the state of their own hearts and the state of the world.

  528. How fortunate are those who mourn.

  529. For they will be comforted.

  530. Jesus says,

  531. How blessed!

  532. How fortunate are the meek.

  533. Those that have found a way or chosen to be gentle

  534. in their dealings with people around them.

  535. They're not gentle by personality.

  536. They might even be quite strong with personality.

  537. But they've chosen a way of gentleness

  538. in their dealings with those around them.

  539. They're not pushy or self-asserting.

  540. How fortunate are the meek, says Jesus.

  541. For they will inherit the earth.

  542. Oh, how blessed!

  543. How fortunate are those that hunger for righteousness.

  544. There's something in their hearts that is desperate

  545. for the world to be the way that Jesus designed it

  546. and made it.

  547. And they long for things to be right again.

  548. They look at the world around them

  549. and they look at their own hearts

  550. and they say,

  551. There's something not right.

  552. And then they hunger,

  553. they long for the world to be

  554. according to the way that God designed it.

  555. They will be satisfied, says Jesus.

  556. Oh, how blessed!

  557. How lucky!

  558. How fortunate are the merciful!

  559. Those that don't hold on to grudges.

  560. They're not vengeful,

  561. but they dispense mercy and grace

  562. to those that hurt them.

  563. They will receive mercy, says Jesus.

  564. Jesus says,

  565. How fortunate are the pure in heart!

  566. Those that are single-minded

  567. in their devotion to Jesus.

  568. They don't have a Sunday life

  569. and then the rest of their life is something else.

  570. There's a single-mindedness.

  571. There's an integrity

  572. between their spiritual life

  573. and the rest of their life.

  574. How blessed is Jesus

  575. of those that are single-minded,

  576. pure in heart,

  577. for they will see God.

  578. Oh, how fortunate are those

  579. that are peacemakers,

  580. those who love peace

  581. and don't like conflict and arguments.

  582. They deal with things properly

  583. so that there's no relational tension.

  584. For they will be called sons and daughters,

  585. children of God.

  586. Fortunate are those who are persecuted

  587. for doing what's right, says Jesus.

  588. For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  589. And so what's Jesus saying in all of this?

  590. This list of beatitudes.

  591. What's Jesus really saying?

  592. In many ways, he's saying,

  593. How fortunate are the unfortunate!

  594. Or how lucky are the unlucky!

  595. Right?

  596. How blessed are those

  597. that the world looks down upon

  598. as unfortunate and ill-fated.

  599. How lucky are those!

  600. Jesus is happy are those

  601. that exhibit the qualities

  602. that this world thinks is ridiculous

  603. and those that the world pities

  604. and carries in their heart

  605. the brokenness of this world.

  606. Oh, how blessed and fortunate

  607. are they!

  608. In a sense, Jesus is almost saying this.

  609. He's almost saying,

  610. If you had a choice before you,

  611. am I going to get to the end of my life

  612. being well-esteemed,

  613. looked up to,

  614. well-regarded,

  615. and having conquered all the things

  616. that the world offers,

  617. or if I get to the end of my life

  618. being pitied,

  619. being thought of as

  620. somebody that didn't quite

  621. make it through life,

  622. not that successful,

  623. if you had to choose

  624. between two of these,

  625. think carefully

  626. because the answer's not as obvious

  627. as our world makes it out to be.

  628. Jesus is almost saying,

  629. It might be better

  630. to get to the end of your life

  631. being pitied,

  632. poor,

  633. and powerless

  634. than having lots of possessions,

  635. power,

  636. and achieving all of the dreams

  637. that society tells you to achieve.

  638. Provocative, right?

  639. Now,

  640. why does Jesus say that?

  641. Well, what's the reason behind this?

  642. Well, I want to give us three reasons

  643. why we should rather be people

  644. to be wise for us to say,

  645. God, I'd rather be poor in spirit,

  646. meek and mournful,

  647. and hungry for the things of God

  648. than satisfied, esteemed,

  649. and blessed in this world

  650. apart from you.

  651. Three reasons why we should do this, okay?

  652. First thing,

  653. let's look at this.

  654. Because the king

  655. and the kingdom have come.

  656. When we look at the list of Beatitudes,

  657. Matthew has deliberately structured them

  658. to communicate

  659. what Jesus was communicating.

  660. So remember,

  661. Jesus didn't just list off this,

  662. rattle off this list of eight sayings

  663. and then kind of move on

  664. to the next section.

  665. Jesus, over a couple of days

  666. and months even,

  667. would have gone

  668. and he would have taught,

  669. hey, rather,

  670. blessed is this person,

  671. even though our world says

  672. this person is to be esteemed,

  673. rather choose this way.

  674. And so Matthew summarized

  675. Jesus' teaching

  676. and he structured it

  677. so that we catch

  678. what Jesus is trying to communicate.

  679. And so how has Matthew structured it?

  680. Well, as we look at it,

  681. there's a pattern here.

  682. And so notice the pattern.

  683. The first Beatitude

  684. and the last Beatitude,

  685. in verse 3 and verse 10,

  686. have the identical promise.

  687. He says,

  688. blessed are the poor in spirit,

  689. verse 3,

  690. for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  691. And then verse 10,

  692. he says,

  693. blessed are those that are persecuted,

  694. why?

  695. For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  696. Do you see that?

  697. Okay.

  698. What's Matthew trying to tell us here?

  699. He's telling us

  700. that this list

  701. is not just

  702. a promise box

  703. of promises from Jesus

  704. that you can take out

  705. one at a time.

  706. This is actually

  707. a summary description

  708. of what life in the kingdom

  709. looks like.

  710. Of those that have

  711. encountered Christ the king

  712. and live in the kingdom,

  713. this is what their life

  714. will look like.

  715. Let me give you an example, okay?

  716. Jesus is not saying

  717. that

  718. if you go through life

  719. and you encounter

  720. something difficult

  721. and you go through

  722. a time of mourning,

  723. well,

  724. don't worry,

  725. blessed are you

  726. because you go to

  727. the promise box

  728. and say,

  729. blessed are those that mourn

  730. for they will be comforted.

  731. Or if you happen

  732. to go through life

  733. and somebody irritates you

  734. and riles you

  735. and you're tempted

  736. to get them back

  737. and you go to your promise box

  738. in the Bible

  739. and pull out and say,

  740. blessed are those

  741. that are merciful

  742. for they will be shown mercy.

  743. And you remember,

  744. oh yes,

  745. I should be merciful.

  746. Okay,

  747. let me give you an example.

  748. In our family,

  749. sometimes my girls

  750. will come to me

  751. and say,

  752. dad,

  753. can we have a chocolate

  754. or a biscuit

  755. or a candy

  756. or something like that?

  757. And I'll go

  758. and I'll bring out a box

  759. and say,

  760. sure,

  761. help yourself.

  762. Now,

  763. as I do that,

  764. I know what they're thinking.

  765. They're thinking,

  766. how many of these

  767. can I get away with?

  768. Right?

  769. And so what do I say?

  770. Before they even say anything,

  771. I first say,

  772. Sierra,

  773. just one.

  774. Okay,

  775. just one.

  776. Shiloh,

  777. just one.

  778. I don't want them

  779. to stuff their mouths.

  780. Right?

  781. Sometimes we can come

  782. to the Beatitudes

  783. and think that this is

  784. a box of chocolates

  785. of Jesus' promises.

  786. Right?

  787. Like we've got to choose.

  788. Should I inherit the earth

  789. or should I be called

  790. a son of God?

  791. Should I be,

  792. should I rather choose mercy

  793. or should I rather choose

  794. to be in the kingdom?

  795. Right?

  796. But that's not what

  797. Jesus is saying at all.

  798. But by structuring it like this,

  799. Matthew is telling us

  800. this is a description

  801. of what life in the kingdom

  802. looks like.

  803. Jesus is saying this.

  804. The way of the king

  805. is that,

  806. the way of the king

  807. is to mourn

  808. and be grieved

  809. by the brokenness

  810. of the world

  811. and what sin does

  812. in the world

  813. and in our own hearts.

  814. And therefore,

  815. such is his people

  816. that they too

  817. will mourn

  818. for the brokenness

  819. of the world.

  820. But they'll be comforted

  821. because they'll know

  822. that Jesus came

  823. to dismantle sin.

  824. Jesus is saying

  825. the way of the king

  826. is to be meek,

  827. not pushing his agenda,

  828. not self-asserting,

  829. but to be humble

  830. and gracious.

  831. And therefore,

  832. his followers

  833. are those who like him

  834. aren't pushing their agenda

  835. and trying to get

  836. to the top of the pile,

  837. but like Jesus

  838. are gentle

  839. and others serving,

  840. not self-seeking,

  841. not grasping

  842. or self-entitled.

  843. And they find themselves

  844. empty-handed,

  845. but yet full

  846. of the kingdom of God.

  847. Jesus says

  848. that the way of the king

  849. is to long

  850. for what is right

  851. and for justice

  852. in the world.

  853. And as such,

  854. his followers

  855. will be those

  856. that because we've

  857. got his heart,

  858. we will be broken

  859. by the injustice

  860. and the unrighteousness

  861. in the world

  862. and we too

  863. will hunger

  864. and thirst

  865. for righteousness,

  866. for what is just

  867. and right in the world.

  868. And because we know

  869. that Christ has come

  870. to turn around the world

  871. and to end all

  872. injustice and wickedness,

  873. we will be satisfied

  874. when Christ returns.

  875. Jesus is saying

  876. that this is the way

  877. of the kingdom.

  878. But notice secondly,

  879. there's something else

  880. to notice.

  881. These two

  882. at the top

  883. and the bottom

  884. are the only two

  885. that are in present tense.

  886. All the others

  887. are in future tense.

  888. Blessed are those

  889. that are poor

  890. and spread

  891. for theirs

  892. is the kingdom

  893. of heaven.

  894. But then it goes on

  895. to say,

  896. those that mourn

  897. they shall be comforted.

  898. Those that are meek

  899. they shall,

  900. what does it say?

  901. Inherit the earth.

  902. Those that are hungry

  903. will be satisfied.

  904. So what's Matthew

  905. telling us here?

  906. He's telling us

  907. that the kingdom of God

  908. isn't just one day

  909. in the future

  910. like hold out

  911. and suffer in this world

  912. and I know it's terrible

  913. and I know that

  914. you've just got to suffer

  915. because one day

  916. when you get to heaven

  917. you'll experience

  918. the kingdom.

  919. What's he saying?

  920. Blessed are those

  921. that are poor in spirit.

  922. Blessed are those

  923. that persecute

  924. for theirs is

  925. the kingdom of God.

  926. Today,

  927. this week,

  928. as you go to work

  929. this week

  930. and you're tempted

  931. to trample

  932. on somebody else

  933. to get in head

  934. of the pile,

  935. the kingdom of God

  936. has come to your life

  937. today and as you say

  938. I will be meek,

  939. I will follow

  940. the way of my king,

  941. today the kingdom of God

  942. has come into your life

  943. and you get to experience

  944. what King Jesus

  945. is doing

  946. in your heart

  947. and your life.

  948. This afternoon

  949. as I go home

  950. and I feel

  951. completely empty

  952. and I feel like

  953. I've got zero

  954. spiritual credentials

  955. and I come to God

  956. and I say

  957. God,

  958. I've got no

  959. spiritual capital.

  960. I've got nothing

  961. to commend myself to you.

  962. I'm done.

  963. Today,

  964. not just in eternity,

  965. the kingdom of God

  966. comes to me.

  967. Theirs is the kingdom

  968. of heaven.

  969. You see,

  970. being a Christian

  971. is not just a matter

  972. of doing good things

  973. or observing Jesus

  974. teaching in the hope

  975. that one day

  976. we'll get to paradise

  977. or one day

  978. we'll get to experience

  979. Nirvana.

  980. No,

  981. that's something else.

  982. That's religion.

  983. Jesus says,

  984. I've come to bring you

  985. the kingdom of God

  986. today.

  987. That right now

  988. as you go to work

  989. tomorrow

  990. and as you go and

  991. visit your family

  992. over Chinese New Year

  993. and as your kids

  994. are sick

  995. and as marriage

  996. is hard

  997. and as finances

  998. are tight,

  999. as you follow

  1000. the king,

  1001. you experience

  1002. the kingdom of heaven.

  1003. Theirs is the kingdom

  1004. of heaven

  1005. today.

  1006. Friends,

  1007. the day you become

  1008. a Christian,

  1009. you may not understand

  1010. a whole lot.

  1011. You may not know

  1012. your Bible at all.

  1013. You may have

  1014. a lot of questions.

  1015. You may still have

  1016. some doubts.

1017. But the day you say,

  1018. Jesus,

  1019. take my life.

  1020. Jesus,

1021. I want to follow you.

  1022. Jesus,

  1023. I'm all in.

  1024. That day

  1025. you get to experience

  1026. the kingdom of heaven

  1027. breaking into your life

  1028. and changing you

  1029. forever.

  1030. That's the day

  1031. you get to experience

  1032. human flourishing.

  1033. Irrespective of

  1034. your circumstances,

  1035. irrespective of

  1036. what's going on

  1037. in your life,

  1038. the kingdom of heaven

  1039. comes.

  1040. Jesus is saying

  1041. that human flourishing,

  1042. what it means

1043. to be a human being

  1044. is not found

  1045. in happy circumstances,

  1046. but it's found

  1047. by participating

1048. in the kingdom of God

  1049. by being in relationship

  1050. with him

  1051. through what Jesus did

  1052. on the cross.

  1053. Does that make sense?

  1054. Okay,

  1055. that's the first thing

  1056. because the king

  1057. and the kingdom

  1058. is here.

  1059. The second reason,

1060. why does Jesus tell us

1061. if you had to choose

  1062. the way of power,

  1063. prestige,

  1064. and honor

  1065. or the way of

  1066. mourning,

  1067. meekness,

  1068. and powerlessness,

  1069. choose this way?

1070. Why does he tell us

  1071. to do that?

  1072. Well,

  1073. the second reason

  1074. is this,

  1075. because every other

  1076. kingdom is going

  1077. to steal your joy.

  1078. Steal your joy.

  1079. Jesus,

1080. in the Sermon on the Mount,

  1081. throws us a challenge

  1082. and he asks us

  1083. a question.

  1084. He says,

  1085. where are you going

  1086. to find your joy

  1087. and what is going

  1088. to be the source

  1089. of your human flourishing?

  1090. What's going to be

1091. the source of your flourishing?

  1092. Where are you going

  1093. to find your joy?

  1094. As we read through

  1095. the Gospels,

  1096. one of the things

  1097. we see again

  1098. and again

  1099. and again

  1100. is that Jesus

  1101. constantly is ignoring,

  1102. sometimes even

  1103. outright rejecting

  1104. the rich

  1105. and the powerful

  1106. and the leaders

  1107. of society

  1108. and he's always

  1109. welcoming into his midst

  1110. those that have got

  1111. no spiritual capital,

  1112. those that aren't

  1113. going to bring anything

  1114. and contribute

  1115. towards his kingdom,

  1116. right?

  1117. Remember Matthew

  1118. in Luke,

  1119. I think it's around

  1120. chapter 16 or so,

  1121. some children

  1122. come running to Jesus

  1123. and the disciples

1124. are trying to push them away

  1125. and say,

  1126. Jesus doesn't have time

  1127. for you

  1128. and Jesus says,

  1129. bring the children,

  1130. bring the children

  1131. to such belongs

  1132. the kingdom of heaven

  1133. and then,

  1134. straight after the children

  1135. come to him,

  1136. in fact,

  1137. while the children

  1138. are with him,

  1139. a very rich,

  1140. very powerful,

  1141. young,

  1142. influential leader

  1143. of society

  1144. comes to Jesus

  1145. and he says,

  1146. Jesus,

  1147. I want to join

  1148. your party.

1149. You can do good for me

1150. and I can do good for you.

  1151. Let's talk.

  1152. How do I get

  1153. to heaven?

1154. How do I get to be part

1155. of what you're doing here?

  1156. And Jesus says,

  1157. he gives them

1158. a whole lot of obstacles

  1159. and he rejects him

  1160. and eventually,

  1161. Jesus says,

  1162. listen,

  1163. if you really want

  1164. to join my kingdom,

  1165. do this.

  1166. Sell all your possessions,

1167. get rid of all your wealth,

1168. give it to the poor

1169. and then come and follow me

  1170. just as you are

  1171. and this wealthy,

  1172. influential,

  1173. powerful man

  1174. walks away saddened.

  1175. Why does Jesus

  1176. welcome the children

  1177. that are going to

  1178. contribute nothing

  1179. to his campaign

  1180. and yet rejects

  1181. this influential,

  1182. powerful person?

  1183. Why is Jesus

  1184. constantly

  1185. shunning

  1186. those that have

  1187. got influence

  1188. and welcoming

  1189. the poor

  1190. and the marginalized?

  1191. Friends,

  1192. the reason why

  1193. he does it

  1194. is that to me

  1195. sorry,

  1196. I don't know

  1197. what I'm doing.

  1198. Okay,

  1199. let's just try that.

1200. I think this will be right.

1201. Why is Jesus doing this?

  1202. Why is he constantly

  1203. inversing and doing

  1204. the opposite

  1205. of what we'd expect?

  1206. The reason why

  1207. he constantly comes

  1208. into conflict

  1209. with the establishment

  1210. is not because

  1211. having money

  1212. is morally wrong,

  1213. not because being

  1214. influential is wrong,

  1215. not because having

  1216. power is wrong,

  1217. but it's because

  1218. it has the ability

  1219. to blind us

  1220. to what truly

  1221. gives life

1222. and where true joy lies.

  1223. The reason Jesus

  1224. constantly is warning us

  1225. against finding

  1226. a joy

  1227. in the things

  1228. of the world

  1229. is because

  1230. while they promise

  1231. the world,

  1232. they actually steal

  1233. our joy.

  1234. Remember the unbeatitudes?

  1235. Congratulations

  1236. to the entitled.

1237. They grab what they want.

  1238. Congratulations

  1239. to the pushy.

  1240. They will win

  1241. in the end.

  1242. Congratulations

  1243. to those who

  1244. don't get caught.

  1245. They will look good.

  1246. Ray Orton

  1247. asks this question.

  1248. He says,

  1249. well he actually

  1250. says this,

  1251. he says,

  1252. either way

  1253. we must live

  1254. by faith.

  1255. Both the promises

  1256. of Jesus

  1257. and the promise

  1258. of this world

  1259. promise a successful

  1260. and flourishing life.

  1261. Promise a good life.

1262. But you have to choose

  1263. which one.

  1264. Which one

1265. are you going to follow?

  1266. Either way

  1267. we have to live

  1268. by faith.

1269. And who are we going

  1270. to trust?

  1271. Whose invitation

1272. are we going to accept?

  1273. Friends,

  1274. here is a king

  1275. who offers us

  1276. an invitation

  1277. with a promise.

  1278. He says,

  1279. if you invest

  1280. your life

  1281. and your hopes

  1282. and your dreams

  1283. in me,

  1284. if you hand over

  1285. all of your life

  1286. to me,

  1287. it will cost you

  1288. no doubt.

1289. You may not be esteemed,

1290. you may not be loved,

1291. you may not be adored.

  1292. Following him

  1293. will cost you

  1294. everything.

1295. But if you trust him,

1296. if you let your life

  1297. shaped by the gospel,

  1298. you will discover

1299. a kind of human flourishing

  1300. that nothing

  1301. and no one

  1302. can take away

  1303. from you.

  1304. It's a kind of human flourishing

  1305. which both deeply satisfies

  1306. and will never

  1307. get taken

  1308. away from you.

  1309. In Luke chapter 7,

    Luke 7 chapter mention

  1310. there's a similar

  1311. account to the Beatitudes.

  1312. Jesus says,

  1313. blessed are these people

  1314. and not these people.

1315. One of the old commentators

  1316. in Luke chapter 7

    Luke 7 chapter mention

  1317. writing on this,

1318. he's got this little line

  1319. where he says,

1320. the writings on the wall,

  1321. see Daniel chapter 5.

    Daniel 5 chapter mention

1322. In the book of Daniel

  1323. in chapter 5,

  1324. what's happening is

  1325. there's a king

  1326. called Belshazzar

  1327. and he's the king

  1328. of Babylon.

  1329. But the Assyrian army,

1330. I mean not the Assyrian,

  1331. the Persian army

  1332. is at the gates

1333. and they're about to come

  1334. and overthrow

  1335. the Babylonian empire.

  1336. And so,

1337. he knows it's kind of the end.

  1338. And so,

1339. he throws this epic party.

1340. He decides he's going to go out

1341. in a blaze of glory.

  1342. And so,

1343. he throws this massive party

  1344. for thousands of people.

  1345. There's wine,

  1346. there's beer,

  1347. everything's happening.

  1348. And he brings in

  1349. all their wives,

1350. he brings in their concubines

1351. and it's just this massive

  1352. hedonistic festival.

  1353. And at this party,

  1354. what happens is

1355. in the middle of the party,

  1356. there's this handwriting

  1357. that starts to write

  1358. on the wall.

  1359. And essentially,

  1360. what the handwriting

  1361. is saying,

1362. it's in the strange language

1363. and no one can understand it.

  1364. And eventually,

  1365. Daniel comes in

  1366. and he interprets it.

1367. And what he says is this,

  1368. Belshazzar,

  1369. your time is up.

  1370. And essentially,

1371. the handwriting on the wall

  1372. is saying,

  1373. you've been king,

  1374. you've been doing

  1375. your own thing,

  1376. you've been living

  1377. for your own glory,

  1378. self-esteem,

  1379. you're at the top

  1380. of the pile,

1381. but your time is up.

  1382. Friends,

  1383. that's what Jesus

  1384. is saying here

1385. with the Sermon on the Mount.

  1386. He's saying,

1387. the handwriting's on the wall.

  1388. The time is up.

  1389. Yeah, sure,

1390. you can pursue a kingdom.

1391. You can get to the top

  1392. of the pile,

  1393. you can advance,

1394. you can get what you want,

  1395. you can be well-loved,

1396. you will win in the end,

1397. you grab what you want,

  1398. be entitled

  1399. and self-seeking,

  1400. sure,

  1401. but the handwriting's

  1402. on the wall.

  1403. That kingdom

  1404. will steal your joy

  1405. and it will never,

  1406. ever satisfy.

1407. But if you want to experience

  1408. true human flourishing,

1409. if you want to get

1410. to the end of your life

  1411. and maybe your name

  1412. won't be in lights,

  1413. maybe nobody

  1414. will remember you,

  1415. you want to get

1416. to the end of your days

  1417. a wise,

  1418. radiant,

  1419. satisfied person.

1420. If you want to experience

  1421. true human flourishing,

  1422. there's a path to take

1423. and it's not the most

  1424. popular path.

  1425. It's not the path

1426. that's going to make you

  1427. rich and famous.

1428. It may even be the path

1429. that society mocks you for

  1430. and laughs at you

  1431. and thinks you're ridiculous.

  1432. Choose that path.

  1433. Blessed are the poor

  1434. in spirit,

1435. for theirs is the kingdom

  1436. of heaven.

  1437. Blessed are those

  1438. that mourn,

1439. for they will be comforted,

  1440. both in this life

  1441. and the next.

  1442. Blessed are the meek,

  1443. for they will inherit

  1444. the earth,

  1445. both in this life

  1446. and in the next.

  1447. Blessed are those

  1448. that are hungry,

  1449. they are desperate

  1450. for the world

1451. to be made right again,

  1452. in their hearts

1453. and in this lifetime too.

  1454. And while it seems

  1455. like it's never coming,

  1456. they will be satisfied.

1457. They will come a day

  1458. where every longing

  1459. of their heart

  1460. will be satisfied.

  1461. Friends,

  1462. Jesus is blessed

1463. with the pure in heart,

  1464. those that are single-minded

  1465. and devoted

  1466. to his cause

  1467. and his purposes.

1468. For they will see God.

  1469. Friends,

  1470. human flourishing

1471. is found in the fact

  1472. that everything

  1473. in this,

  1474. if human flourishing

  1475. is found

  1476. and the fact

  1477. that everything

  1478. in this life

  1479. fits perfectly together

  1480. and you never grieve

  1481. or mourn,

  1482. it's just a matter

  1483. of time

  1484. before some tragedy

  1485. strikes

  1486. and your whole world

  1487. comes to an end

  1488. and your whole kingdom

  1489. comes crashing down.

  1490. Jesus is those

  1491. that have followed him

  1492. because they have

1493. entrusted their life to him.

  1494. They will discover

  1495. a contentment,

  1496. they will discover

  1497. a blessedness

  1498. that transcends

  1499. even these moments

  1500. of grief.

  1501. To be modest,

  1502. to grieve,

  1503. to be regarded

  1504. as a disappointment

  1505. and unfortunate

  1506. is better than being

  1507. prosperous,

  1508. powerful,

  1509. and well-esteemed

1510. in the eyes of the world.

  1511. And the third

  1512. and final reason

  1513. is this,

  1514. because of who

  1515. this king is.

  1516. Friends,

  1517. this morning,

  1518. Jesus offers us

  1519. an invitation

  1520. and it's an invitation

  1521. with a promise

  1522. that life and happiness

  1523. are not found

1524. in having all your problems

  1525. taken away.

  1526. They're found

  1527. in a person.

  1528. They're found

  1529. in the one

  1530. who is both king,

  1531. the one who

  1532. all the world

1533. will one day bow before,

  1534. but the king

  1535. who ended up

  1536. on the cross.

  1537. And the invitation

1538. is not to get your life

  1539. sorted out

1540. so that you can come

  1541. into his kingdom.

  1542. The invitation

  1543. is not to do

1544. a bunch of religious things

  1545. that Jesus will say,

  1546. okay,

  1547. you've done enough,

  1548. come to my kingdom.

  1549. The invitation

  1550. is not to try

  1551. and be extra religious

1552. or to do certain things

1553. that you can be qualified

  1554. for this kingdom.

  1555. It's an invitation

1556. to come to the kingdom,

  1557. the king,

  1558. just as you are.

  1559. And why should he

  1560. accept you?

1561. Why should he receive you

  1562. with all your brokenness,

  1563. as Oscar said,

  1564. with all your conflicting

  1565. and darkness

  1566. in your heart?

1567. Why should he accept you?

1568. Because of who this king is.

  1569. Because he's Jesus.

  1570. This week,

  1571. I was texting

  1572. a friend of mine

  1573. and I said,

  1574. hey bud,

  1575. why don't you come

  1576. to church on Sunday?

1577. We'd love to see you.

  1578. And his response was,

  1579. he said,

1580. I want to come to church,

1581. but I want to have

  1582. a good spiritual image

1583. before I come to church.

  1584. I want to have

1585. my ducks in a row.

  1586. And I replied

  1587. and I said,

  1588. that's the very opposite.

1589. You should come to church

  1590. as you are.

1591. But as I thought about it,

  1592. I thought,

  1593. I'm just like him.

1594. I love to come to church

1595. with a good spiritual image.

1596. I love to come here

1597. with all my ducks in a row,

  1598. having had perfect

1599. quiet times in the week,

  1600. coming having never

  1601. missed a beat,

  1602. having me and Jesus

  1603. just tight like this,

  1604. having come and feel

  1605. so good about myself.

  1606. But friends,

  1607. this king,

  1608. Jesus,

  1609. he says,

  1610. come as you are.

  1611. I won't leave you

  1612. as you are,

  1613. he says,

  1614. I'll change you,

1615. I'll break into your life,

  1616. I'll align your heart

  1617. more like my life,

1618. but come as you are.

  1619. Come as your brokenness.

  1620. Come in your sin.

  1621. Come and surrender.

1622. Come and follow the king.

  1623. Friends,

  1624. you may say,

  1625. but I haven't done enough.

  1626. I don't deserve his kindness.

  1627. Of course you don't

  1628. deserve his kindness.

  1629. That's the whole point.

  1630. Only when you understand,

  1631. begin to understand

  1632. that you don't deserve

  1633. his kindness,

1634. can you begin to come to him.

  1635. Come to him nevertheless.

  1636. Come as you are.

  1637. Come and he will

  1638. truly satisfy you.

  1639. You may say,

  1640. but I don't know enough.

  1641. I don't know the Bible.

1642. Will he accept me as I am?

  1643. Friends,

  1644. come to the one

  1645. who rejected the rich

  1646. young ruler

  1647. and welcome children.

1648. Come to him as you are.

1649. You may not know the Bible,

  1650. you may not understand

  1651. all the spiritual laws,

1652. come just as you are

1653. and he will teach you.

  1654. You may say,

1655. but I've sinned this week.

  1656. Well,

1657. come and bring your sin

  1658. to his cross.

1659. Bring it and leave it

1660. at the foot of the cross.

1661. Don't focus on your sin.

  1662. Bring it,

1663. but don't focus on it.

1664. Lift your eyes above the sin

  1665. and look to Jesus,

  1666. the one who nailed

1667. your sin to the cross,

1668. the one who went to the cross

  1669. that your sin

1670. doesn't need to be held

  1671. against you.

1672. Come to him this morning.

  1673. You may say,

1674. but it will cost you too much.

  1675. I don't want to mourn.

1676. I don't want to be poor in spirit.

  1677. I don't want to be merciful.

  1678. Friends,

1679. of course it will cost you.

1680. It will cost you everything,

1681. but it will cost you nothing

  1682. compared to what

1683. he's going to give you.

  1684. It's like holding on

  1685. to a $10 note

  1686. when he's offering you

  1687. a million dollars

  1688. and saying,

1689. I don't want to let go of this.

  1690. Let go of it.

  1691. It will cost you,

  1692. but it's nothing compared

1693. to what he's going to give you

  1694. as he gives you

  1695. the kingdom of heaven.

  1696. Friends,

  1697. you may say,

  1698. I don't feel worthy.

  1699. Friends,

  1700. come to Jesus,

1701. the one who welcomes sinners,

  1702. the one who welcomes

  1703. the poor in spirit,

  1704. the one who welcomes

1705. those that have no spiritual capital.

  1706. He promised that

1707. yours is the kingdom of heaven.

  1708. Come to him.

  1709. Friends,

  1710. better to be those

1711. who are poor in spirit,

  1712. those who mourn,

  1713. our brokenness,

  1714. those who are regarded

  1715. as a disappointment,

  1716. those who are regarded

  1717. as unfortunate

1718. in the eyes of the world,

  1719. than to be rich

  1720. in our own eyes,

1721. than to come to Jesus

  1722. with spiritual capital,

1723. to come to the bargaining table

  1724. saying,

1725. this is what I can bring,

  1726. than to be those

  1727. that are self-sufficient

  1728. and well-esteemed.

1729. This is the way of the king.

1730. This is the way of the kingdom.

  1731. It's a kingdom

1732. which is here and now.

  1733. It's a kingdom

1734. which will change your life

1735. tomorrow as you go to work.

  1736. It's a kingdom

  1737. which will never end.

  1738. It's a kingdom

  1739. which will promise you

  1740. true joy.

  1741. Let's come to him

  1742. now.

  1743. Let's pray together.

  1744. Oh Lord Jesus,

  1745. God we confess

  1746. that

  1747. God our eyes

  1748. are so often

  1749. caught up

1750. with the things around us.

  1751. God we've been seduced

  1752. by the message

  1753. of our world

  1754. and our culture.

  1755. God we've

  1756. we confess

  1757. Lord God

  1758. that we believe

  1759. the lie

  1760. and Father

  1761. so many of us

  1762. are sorry for it.

  1763. We've realized

  1764. that the world

  1765. cannot deliver

  1766. what it promises.

  1767. God won't you

  1768. give us faith

  1769. to trust you

  1770. won't you

  1771. open our eyes

  1772. to see you

  1773. Lord Jesus

  1774. as heaven and earth

  1775. true king.

  1776. God won't you

  1777. open our eyes

  1778. to see that

  1779. true flourishing

  1780. the blessed life

  1781. God

  1782. is found

  1783. as we come

  1784. to know you God

  1785. because of what

1786. you did on the cross

  1787. Lord Jesus

  1788. by the power

  1789. of the Holy Spirit.

  1790. And so Holy Spirit

1791. come and open our eyes

1792. and draw us to you

  1793. we pray.

  1794. Father where we are

  1795. tempted to hold on

  1796. where

  1797. we acknowledge

1798. that it will cost us

  1799. and we don't want

1800. to give up our right

  1801. we don't want to

  1802. give up our throne.

  1803. Oh Jesus

  1804. help us to see

  1805. Lord

  1806. help us to see

  1807. everything you give us

  1808. God.

  1809. Jesus we pray

  1810. that you'll make us

  1811. more like you

  1812. we'll pray

  1813. Lord God

  1814. that we really

  1815. will be those

  1816. that experience

  1817. the life

  1818. of the kingdom.

  1819. God I pray

  1820. that this week

  1821. because we

  1822. go and visit

  1823. family

  1824. at Chinese New Year

  1825. and we

  1826. spend time

  1827. with loved ones

  1828. God may we be

  1829. agents for the kingdom

  1830. may we be those

  1831. that

  1832. in some ways

  1833. are ambassadors

1834. for the kingdom of heaven

  1835. in the city

  1836. God we pray

  1837. these things

  1838. in your majestic name

  1839. Amen

  1840. Amen

  1841. Amen

  1842. Amen
