  1. The scripture reading comes from 2 Corinthians chapter 5 and 6.

    2 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  2. Please follow along in your bulletins or on the screen.

  3. Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade others.

  4. But what we are is known to God, and I hope it is known also to your conscience.

  5. We are not commending ourselves to you again, but giving you cause to boast about us

  6. so that you may be able to answer those who boast about outward appearance

  7. and not about what is in the heart.

  8. For if we are beside ourselves, it is for God.

  9. If we are in our right mind, it is for you.

  10. For the love of Christ controls us because we have concluded this,

  11. that one has died for all, therefore all have died.

  12. And he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves,

  13. but for him who for their sake died and was raised.

  14. From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh.

  15. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh,

  16. we regard him thus no longer.

  17. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.

  18. The old has passed away.

  19. Behold, the new has come.

  20. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself

  21. and gave us the ministry of reconciliation.

  22. That is, in Christ, God was reconciling the world to himself,

  23. not counting their trespasses against them,

  24. and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.

  25. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ,

  26. God making his appeal through us.

  27. We implore you, on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.

  28. For our sake, he made him to be sin who knew no sin,

  29. so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

  30. Working together with him then,

  31. we appeal to you not to receive the grace of God in vain.

  32. This is the word of God.

  33. Amen.

  34. Amen.

  35. Amen.

  36. Amen.

  37. Amen.

  38. Amen.

  39. Amen.

  40. Amen.

  41. Amen.

  42. Amen.

  43. Great.

  44. Good morning.

  45. Oh, that's terrible.

  46. Good morning.

  47. Good morning.

  48. Great.

  49. That's much better.

  50. My name's Chris.

  51. I'm one of the leaders here in Watermark,

  52. and it's...

  53. I'm going to try and lower this.

  54. I'm not that high.

  55. Okay.

  56. Great to see you this morning.

  57. And if you don't know, we're continuing in a series that Kevin alluded to earlier,

  58. where we're looking at mission in the church.

  59. I don't know if any, how many of you know the story of Corrie Ten Boom.

  60. She was imprisoned in a concentration camp in the Nazi occupation in the Second World War.

  61. She saw her father and her sister die horrifically at the hands of the guards.

  62. And after the war, she became this speaker who traveled the world,

  63. telling people of the love of God and the forgiveness of God.

  64. And she tells the story of one day when a man, after a talk, a man approached her.

  65. And she recognized him.

  66. And he was a former SS guard, one of the ones who had stood mocking

  67. while her sister was led into the gas chambers to die.

  68. And as he came up to her, he held out his hand and said,

  69. thank you so much for your message.

  70. It's amazing that even someone like me could be forgiven.

  71. Corrie, at that moment,

  72. even though she'd been speaking about God's reconciling love,

  73. she says,

  74. I now felt and realized the anger and the hatred that was in my heart.

  75. Because at that moment, I couldn't forgive that guy.

  76. I couldn't reach out my hand to him.

  77. And she said,

  78. at that point, she also realized her own sin in her heart.

  79. And she cried out,

  80. God, please forgive me.

  81. Forgive me.

  82. I can't forgive him.

  83. Help me to forgive him.

  84. And she says,

  85. she reached out her hand to him.

  86. And she says this.

  87. She said,

  88. from my shoulder along my arm,

  89. through my hand,

  90. a current seemed to pass from me to him,

  91. while into my heart sprang a love for this stranger

  92. that almost overwhelmed me.

  93. She had discovered the power of reconciliation

  94. that only comes from God.

  95. Now, many of us may not have experienced

  96. the horrors of a concentration camp.

  97. But we live in a world,

  98. you just look around on the news,

  99. that is filled with division and hatred and tension.

  100. Just look at it in politics.

  101. Look at it in your office.

  102. Look at it in your families.

  103. Look at it.

  104. Just go on the comment section in YouTube.

  105. And you will see

  106. the division and the hurt that there is in this world.

  107. We live in a world that desperately needs reconciliation.

  108. And yet we're incapable of creating it ourselves.

  109. And so as a church,

  110. we have our three banners,

  111. our three values,

  112. gospel, community, mission.

  113. Because we believe that actually the starting point

  114. of all reconciliation

  115. is knowing Christ in the gospel.

  116. And that flows out into us being a community,

  117. who are then a community,

  118. which then go out on mission

  119. to the world around us.

  120. And so that's why over these four weeks,

  121. we're looking specifically at that last one,

  122. the issue of mission.

  123. And so a couple of weeks ago,

  124. we talked about salt and light,

  125. and how actually we're called to be light.

  126. And light doesn't have to try and be light.

  127. Light just is light.

  128. But what helps us to shine that light

  129. is if we have our hearts captured by who Jesus is.

  130. And then we saw last week

  131. that actually Jesus sends us out like sheep

  132. because we have a shepherd

  133. who is compassionate towards us.

  134. So we can demonstrate

  135. and have our eyes open

  136. to see the harvest field around us

  137. and see with his eyes.

  138. But today we're looking at the idea

  139. of being ambassadors of Jesus,

  140. those who are ministers,

  141. agents of reconciliation

  142. in Hong Kong and the world around us.

  143. So we're going to be looking at this passage

  144. in 2 Corinthians.

  145. And this passage is Paul writing

  146. in a context of division.

  147. because there have actually been

  148. a whole lot of very impressive,

  149. eloquent speakers who've come in.

  150. And they have,

  151. the Corinthian church there in Greece

  152. has got captured by their message

  153. because they think that godliness

  154. seems to look like being very impressive.

  155. And Paul doesn't look very impressive.

  156. And so he and his message

  157. have been looked down on by the Corinthians.

  158. And so Paul is writing this letter

  159. both to prove his credentials

  160. but also to say to the people here,

  161. don't get distracted

  162. from the gospel of Christ

  163. because this is the power

  164. for you to change

  165. and to be agents of change.

  166. So we're going to have two points,

  167. okay, today.

  168. First point that I want to look at

  169. is receiving reconciliation.

  170. And then we're going to look

  171. at ambassadors of reconciliation.

  172. So if you've got your bulletin with you,

  173. have it in your handout with you.

  174. Just have a look

  175. and we'll be going through that together.

  176. So receiving reconciliation.

  177. Verse 14 says this,

  178. for the love of God controls us

  179. because we have concluded this,

  180. that one died for all

  181. and therefore all died.

  182. And then verse 18, he says,

  183. all this is from God

  184. who through Christ reconciled us

  185. to himself.

  186. Now if you need reconciling,

  187. that tells you

  188. that there is a serious

  189. relational problem with someone.

  190. Here it is God.

  191. God doesn't think

  192. that we're basically cute

  193. and he just needs to knock off

  194. a few kind of rough edges

  195. on our sides.

  196. The whole of the self-help industry

  197. is based on the idea

  198. that basically you're fundamentally good

  199. with a few flaws.

  200. That if you just work hard enough,

  201. you can overcome.

  202. The gospel says,

  203. no, that's not the situation.

  204. Paul says,

  205. one has died for all

  206. because therefore all have died.

  207. He's saying the reason

  208. that Jesus died for,

  209. on behalf of,

  210. in the place of,

  211. as a substitute for,

  212. or every person

  213. is because all people

  214. were dead to God.

  215. We don't want God

  216. to interfere in our lives.

  217. We don't want God

  218. to tell us

  219. what to do in our lives.

  220. We don't want him

  221. to tell us to reconcile

  222. with that annoying colleague

  223. or spouse.

  224. We don't naturally want

  225. to follow his ways at all.

  226. None of us do.

  227. One commentator said this

  228. about this passage.

  229. He said,

  230. the New Testament

  231. never speaks of God

  232. being reconciled

  233. to men and women,

  234. but always of men and women

  235. being reconciled to God.

  236. The whole process of salvation

  237. takes its beginning from him.

  238. It was because God

  239. so loved the world

  240. that he sent his son.

  241. It is not that God

  242. is estranged from human beings,

  243. but that they are estranged

  244. from him.

  245. God's message,

  246. the message which Paul brought,

  247. is an appeal

  248. from a loving father

  249. to a wandering

  250. and estranged children

  251. to come home

  252. where love is waiting for them.

  253. Do you get what he's saying?

  254. What he's saying is,

  255. he's not saying

  256. God doesn't mind

  257. about our sin.

  258. He's actually saying

  259. God hates sin.

  260. He will not tolerate sin.

  261. Those who persistently

  262. refuse him

  263. will end up in a hell

  264. apart from him forever.

  265. There won't be second chances

  266. after you die.

  267. But God is not cold

  268. and distant

  269. with his kind of back turned

  270. needing to be persuaded

  271. to reach out to us.

  272. He wants to reach out

  273. to his estranged children,

  274. alienated from him.

  275. People like you and me.

  276. You know,

  277. I first met Jim.

  278. He was a homeless guy

  279. when I was at university

  280. selling magazines

  281. just to get by.

  282. We chatted over

  283. a period of weeks

  284. and months.

  285. I got to know him.

  286. I heard his story.

  287. I heard how he needed

  288. an address

  289. to find a home

  290. to be able to get a job.

  291. So a friend of mine

  292. offered to have him

  293. stay with him temporarily

  294. until he could get a job

  295. and afford to pay

  296. the rent himself.

  297. Two days after he arrived,

  298. my friend came back home

  299. to realize

  300. that 500 pounds

  301. was missing

  302. from his new colleague's

  303. coat pocket

  304. who'd been staying with him.

  305. Jim had disappeared.

  306. We phoned the police.

  307. They weren't very interested.

  308. So I went to look for Jim.

  309. I knew where to go,

  310. so I went straight down

  311. to this local

  312. kind of homeless shelter

  313. and there he was.

  314. As I walked in,

  315. you should have seen

  316. the look on his face.

  317. It was the ultimate look

  318. of a guilty look.

  319. He hung his head in shame.

  320. I told him

  321. that we'd call the police,

  322. but I also told him

  323. of the love of Christ

  324. and the offer of forgiveness

  325. and I invited him

  326. to come back to our house

  327. for a meal.

  328. Two weeks went past.

  329. Jim never showed up.

  330. I was cycling through

  331. a completely different

  332. area of town.

  333. I was taking a kind of shortcut

  334. through a back alley,

  335. completely off the beaten track.

  336. when who was sitting there

  337. on the bench?

  338. But Jim,

  339. you should have seen

  340. the look on his face.

  341. He said to me,

  342. I've been trying

  343. to get away from you

  344. and this was the one place

  345. in the whole city

  346. of half a million people

  347. that I thought

  348. could have escaped from you.

  349. I guess God is on my case.

  350. That's what he said.

  351. I invited him

  352. to come to our place.

  353. We studied some

  354. scripture together.

  355. I invited him

  356. to stay a couple of days

  357. while we fixed up

  358. accommodation for him.

  359. We found him a place

  360. and while I was,

  361. I ran out,

  362. I had to run out the door

  363. for an appointment

  364. and a few hours later

  365. I got a call

  366. from my housemate

  367. saying that his PSP

  368. and his guitar pedals

  369. had been stolen.

  370. Eventually he got arrested.

  371. He got to prison

  372. for a short time.

  373. He came out.

  374. He stayed at my parents

  375. for a night

  376. and he stole some more money

  377. from another friend.

  378. And then he went out

  379. and he robbed some people

  380. on the streets.

  381. He was an addict.

  382. He got back in prison

  383. for a while longer.

  384. Every week I went

  385. to visit him.

  386. I talk of the love of Christ.

  387. I tell him to go

  388. and see the prison chaplain.

  389. Every week he promised

  390. he would.

  391. Every time I went back

  392. he never had.

  393. Eventually he moved prison

  394. and we saw each other

  395. much less.

  396. 18 months went past.

  397. I kind of gave up on Jim

  398. because he never seemed

  399. to change.

  400. And then one day

  401. I received a letter

  402. from Jim.

  403. He said,

  404. it went something like this,

  405. Chris,

  406. I just wanted to tell you

  407. I got baptized last week.

  408. I'd been brewing some beer

  409. in prison.

  410. Yes, you do.

  411. And I got caught.

  412. And I got put

  413. in solitary confinement.

  414. And when I was there

  415. I remembered all the grace

  416. that had been shown to me

  417. and all you had told me

  418. about Christ.

  419. And at that moment

  420. I confessed my need

  421. of Christ as my Savior

  422. and I repented

  423. of all that I'd done.

  424. He said,

  425. the next day

  426. the prison chaplain

  427. came around.

  428. And he said,

  429. it's Saturday.

  430. Saturday you're going

  431. to get baptized.

  432. Jim was a little confused

  433. because he hadn't talked

  434. to the chaplain at all.

  435. And so he said,

  436. oh, okay.

  437. Saturday morning came

  438. the chaplain came around

  439. and said,

  440. hell, I'm really sorry

  441. I got the wrong person

  442. the other day.

  443. It was another guy

  444. who was meant

  445. to be getting baptized,

  446. not you.

  447. But would you still

  448. like to get baptized?

  449. And he said,

  450. yes.

  451. And he said,

  452. I shared my testimony

  453. in front of all the inmates

  454. of how God had chased after me

  455. and he brought me home

  456. to himself.

  457. You see,

  458. as I've thought about that,

  459. I often wonder,

  460. were we irresponsible

  461. in the way that we kind of

  462. kept inviting him back?

  463. Was it stupid?

  464. And I think there'd be

  465. one or three things

  466. I would change,

  467. but I'd do it all again,

  468. not because I'm great

  469. or do anything like that

  470. because I'm not.

  471. I gave up on Jim,

  472. but actually because I realized

  473. that I am just like Jim

  474. and so are you

  475. and me.

  476. You see,

  477. how often

  478. does God bless us

  479. with so many things,

  480. calling us to himself

  481. and yet we steal from him

  482. for ourselves?

  483. We steal his glory

  484. wanting it for ourselves.

  485. And we run and hide

  486. in hilt and shame.

  487. And in chasing after Jim,

  488. it cost us some money.

  489. We had to compensate

  490. the people who were robbed.

  491. But when Christ

  492. chased after us,

  493. our sin and selfishness

  494. cost Jesus

  495. not just some money,

  496. but his very life.

  497. He died for all.

  498. the one who had no sin,

  499. completely blameless,

  500. took the full cost

  501. of all my running away

  502. from God,

  503. all my stealing his glory

  504. for myself.

  505. He took it on himself

  506. so that my debt to God

  507. may be paid.

  508. How irresponsible,

  509. knowing exactly what I'm like,

  510. that I'm a sin addict,

  511. self-glory addict,

  512. who throws his kindness

  513. back in his face

  514. so often.

  515. And yet,

  516. at no point

  517. did Jim ever take

  518. the initiative

  519. to walk in repentance

  520. towards us.

  521. In fact,

  522. he was running away

  523. from us.

  524. At no point

  525. have you and I

  526. taken the initiative

  527. to run towards God

  528. because we were dead

  529. to God.

  530. But it's always God

  531. who is reaching out

  532. to us

  533. who are like orphans,

  534. homeless,

  535. running away from him.

  536. And he calls us back

  537. again and again

  538. and again.

  539. This is the reconciling

  540. love of God.

  541. Do you see that?

  542. That's what Paul's

  543. talking about.

  544. And reconciling

  545. is not just about God

  546. kind of wiping

  547. our slate clean,

  548. hoping we don't

  549. mess up again.

  550. Do you know

  551. the word reconcile

  552. originally means

  553. to exchange?

  554. Just as you know

  555. when you go on holiday,

  556. some of you have been

  557. on holiday recently,

  558. and you know

  559. when you exchange

  560. Hong Kong dollars

  561. for Japanese yen.

  562. You know,

  563. Hong Kong dollars

  564. don't have currency

  565. in Japan.

  566. So if you have come

  567. to Christ,

  568. you've come with

  569. all your anger,

  570. all your bitterness,

  571. all your self-centeredness,

  572. even the good deeds

  573. that you think

  574. make yourself feel

  575. good about yourself,

  576. you come to them

  577. and you give them

  578. to him because

  579. they don't have

  580. currency with him.

  581. And God instead

  582. gives you his currency.

  583. He gives you

  584. his righteousness.

  585. That's what he says

  586. in verse 21.

  587. For our sake,

  588. he made him

  589. to be sin

  590. who knew no sin.

  591. The sinless one

  592. became our substitute,

  593. took our penalty,

  594. so that in him

  595. we might become

  596. the righteousness of God.

  597. Do you see

  598. what he's saying?

  599. He's saying

  600. he gives us

  601. his patience

  602. for our anger.

  603. He gives us

  604. his mercy

  605. for our unforgiveness.

  606. He gives us

  607. his selflessness

  608. for our selfishness.

  609. He gives us

  610. his grace

  611. for our judgmentalism.

  612. He gives us

  613. his right standing

  614. with him

  615. in close,

  616. intimate relationship

  617. with him.

  618. His righteousness.

  619. And Jesus

  620. is the only currency

  621. that God accepts.

  622. Nothing you've ever done

  623. unless it's done

  624. through the trusting

  625. work of Jesus

  626. has currency

  627. with God.

  628. And if you're not

  629. a believer

  630. this morning,

  631. this passage

  632. has amazing urgency.

  633. Paul is saying,

  634. we implore you.

  635. That's like,

  636. we beg you.

  637. We beseech you.

  638. Urging you,

  639. stop running away

  640. from God

  641. like a homeless orphan

  642. relying on yourself.

  643. Be reconciled.

  644. Come back

  645. to your father

  646. who is reaching out

  647. because eternity

  648. is at stake.

  649. Your life

  650. is at stake.

  651. And God's currency

  652. is only Christ.

  653. But if you are

  654. a Christian,

  655. Paul says this,

  656. and this is just

  657. very challenging.

  658. He says,

  659. the love of Christ

  660. controls us

  661. because we have

  662. concluded,

  663. we have come

  664. to a place

  665. of settled conviction

  666. that this message

  667. about God's

  668. reconciling love

  669. with the creator

  670. of the universe

  671. is true.

  672. It is true.

  673. And when we get that

  674. and that sinks

  675. into our hearts,

  676. he says,

  677. it means you no longer

  678. live for yourself

  679. but you live for Christ.

  680. In other words,

  681. Christ's love

  682. now drives you

  683. more than your GPA

  684. drives you.

  685. more than your grades

  686. drive you.

  687. More than your bonus

  688. drives you.

  689. Christ's love

  690. is shaping

  691. every single facet

  692. of your life

  693. as the gospel

  694. goes deeper

  695. into your heart.

  696. I mean,

  697. just think.

  698. No longer live

  699. for yourself

  700. but for the one

  701. who loved you

  702. with my time.

  703. What would it mean

  704. for me to say

  705. the love of Christ

  706. is going to shape

  707. the way I'm thinking

  708. about my time?

  709. What would it mean

  710. as I look at the finances

  711. and the resources

  712. that I have

  713. and I say

  714. the love of Christ

  715. is now going to shape

  716. the way I view

  717. every single penny,

  718. every single cent

  719. that I own

  720. because it's his

  721. and his love.

  722. Now,

  723. it's not for just myself.

  724. It's going to shape

  725. who you hang out with.

  726. It's going to shape

  727. your holidays.

  728. It's going to shape

  729. how you do your social media.

  730. Every part of your life

  731. shaped by the love of Christ

  732. and where it's not doing that,

  733. this is where the gospel

  734. needs to go deeper into us

  735. because this is why

  736. the reconciliation of Christ

  737. is something we need again

  738. and again to go deeper.

  739. That's the first point.

  740. We are those

  741. who have been reconciled

  742. to Christ.

  743. Secondly,

  744. because of that,

  745. we are ambassadors

  746. of reconciliation.

  747. He says this,

  748. Jesus didn't just bring you

  749. to yourself,

  750. bring you to himself

  751. just for yourself.

  752. Did you know that?

  753. Half a person knows that.

  754. Okay.

  755. Did you know that?

  756. You were not saved

  757. if you're a Christian

  758. just for yourself.

  759. Verse 18,

  760. he says this,

  761. he reconciled us

  762. to himself

  763. and gave us

  764. the ministry

  765. of reconciliation.

  766. And then later on,

  767. he says,

  768. and he entrusted

  769. to us

  770. the message

  771. of reconciliation.

  772. Do you see what he's saying?

  773. He's saying,

  774. if you're a believer,

  775. you've been reconciled,

  776. brought close to Christ,

  777. and you've been given

  778. a ministry,

  779. do you know you have

  780. a ministry?

  781. Do you know it doesn't matter

  782. where you're serving,

  783. you have a ministry

  784. and your ministry

  785. is the ministry

  786. of reconciliation.

  787. Did you know that?

  788. Say,

  789. I'm a minister

  790. of reconciliation.

  791. That's good.

  792. Okay.

  793. We're ministers of this

  794. because we live

  795. in an angry,

  796. divided world.

  797. And the privilege

  798. that we spoke of last week

  799. of being involved

  800. in the harvest

  801. is what chapter 6,

  802. verse 1 says.

  803. He says,

  804. we work together

  805. with God

  806. in his work

  807. of reconciling people

  808. to himself.

  809. And just think,

  810. this is what we said

  811. last week,

  812. but it bears repeating.

  813. Just think what an insane

  814. idea it would be

  815. if it's not in scripture.

  816. That the God

  817. of the universe

  818. actually wants

  819. to partner with you.

  820. Have you ever thought

  821. about how crazy

  822. that is?

  823. That God

  824. has headhunted you

  825. to be on his team

  826. and he looked

  827. at your CV

  828. and it was bad.

  829. And then he looked

  830. at your references

  831. and they were even worse.

  832. And yet he still

  833. chose you

  834. to be on his team.

  835. And he brought you

  836. to himself

  837. and he gave you

  838. a ministry.

  839. Because it's about him

  840. and his glory,

  841. it's not about you.

  842. C.H. Spurgeon

  843. once said,

  844. without God

  845. we can't.

  846. Without us

  847. he won't.

  848. You hear that?

  849. Without God

  850. we can't.

  851. We can't do his mission.

  852. But without us

  853. he won't.

  854. He has chosen

  855. to partner with us.

  856. Which is why

  857. Paul then says,

  858. therefore

  859. we are ambassadors

  860. for Christ.

  861. God making

  862. his appeal

  863. through us.

  864. What is an ambassador?

  865. Well in the Roman Empire

  866. of the time

  867. the emperor

  868. was the supreme ruler

  869. of the vast Roman Empire.

  870. Because his empire

  871. was so large

  872. what he would do

  873. he would send out

  874. representatives

  875. to deliver

  876. his proclamations

  877. to speak

  878. and act

  879. on behalf of him.

  880. And here

  881. Paul is saying

  882. what is the message

  883. that we have been

  884. sent as his representatives

  885. it's the message

  886. that God is in

  887. the reconciliation

  888. business.

  889. And he's saying

  890. that to every believer

  891. you've been entrusted

  892. with this message

  893. about a savior

  894. who has died

  895. as Colin was saying

  896. earlier

  897. you've been entrusted

  898. with that

  899. as his ambassadors.

  900. What does that mean?

  901. There's a few things

  902. that I think

  903. that means.

  904. Firstly

  905. it means

  906. we speak

  907. on behalf

  908. of God.

  909. That's a crazy idea.

  910. It says

  911. it is God

  912. who is making

  913. his appeal

  914. through

  915. us.

  916. Do you see that?

  917. That means

  918. I don't need

  919. to be embarrassed

  920. by the message

  921. because it's his message

  922. it's not my message.

  923. And it also means

  924. I don't need

  925. to make it

  926. so that it never

  927. I'm so worried

  928. about what everyone

  929. else is thinking

  930. and I just don't

  931. want to offend anyone

  932. so I'm going to

  933. change the message

  934. to make it sound

  935. alright for everybody

  936. else

  937. because it's not

  938. my message to change

  939. it's his message.

  940. It also means

  941. that if I'm lovingly

  942. sharing the message

  943. of reconciliation

  944. with people

  945. just like

  946. Colin's friend did

  947. if others reject it

  948. they're not rejecting me

  949. they're rejecting

  950. God himself.

  951. God doesn't need us

  952. to make excuses

  953. for his reconciliation

  954. plan.

  955. An ambassador

  956. doesn't change

  957. the message

  958. to suit his hearers

  959. because his message

  960. comes direct

  961. from the emperor

  962. himself

  963. from God himself.

  964. So what does that mean?

  965. That means

  966. when you sit down

  967. with your friends

  968. and maybe the nature

  969. of the conversation

  970. turns to a spiritual topic

  971. or you're talking about

  972. something of

  973. division that's going on

  974. or there's tensions

  975. and you can speak

  976. there's an opportunity

  977. to speak of God's

  978. restoring love

  979. into that.

  980. There is a direct line

  981. from the throne room

  982. of heaven

  983. right down to you

  984. right there

  985. for you to speak

  986. with God's authority

  987. into that situation

  988. and represent

  989. what he would want you

  990. to say

  991. at that moment.

  992. Do you remember

  993. when Jesus sent out

  994. the twelve last week?

  995. He said

  996. I give you

  997. authority

  998. to preach

  999. and to heal

  1000. and to drive out

  1001. unclean spirits.

  1002. I remember

  1003. the beginning

  1004. of the great commission

  1005. in Matthew 28

  1006. where he says

  1007. all authority

  1008. in heaven and earth

  1009. is given to me

  1010. therefore

  1011. you guys go.

1012. You go in my authority

  1013. not in yours.

1014. And so instead of going

1015. when you're in those situations

  1016. I hope I can get away

  1017. without saying anything

  1018. right now.

  1019. We go

  1020. if you know

  1021. you're an ambassador

  1022. sent with his authority

  1023. you're going

  1024. thank you father

  1025. that you've entrusted me

  1026. with the privilege

  1027. right now

  1028. of being able

  1029. to speak

  1030. and to share

  1031. this incredible

  1032. good news

  1033. with my friends

  1034. and my colleagues.

  1035. God what do you

  1036. want me to say

  1037. right now

1038. because I have no idea.

1039. And maybe you just ask

  1040. have you ever thought

  1041. that God actually

  1042. wants a living

  1043. relationship with you?

  1044. You're an ambassador.

  1045. And ambassadors

  1046. don't just speak

  1047. his message

  1048. we speak on behalf

  1049. of him

  1050. but we don't just

  1051. speak it

  1052. we also embody

  1053. his message

  1054. intentionally.

  1055. That's the next thing

  1056. that an ambassador does.

  1057. You know

  1058. an ambassador

  1059. doesn't stay

  1060. in his home country.

  1061. An ambassador

  1062. always goes

  1063. to another place

  1064. another culture

  1065. where there's

  1066. another language

  1067. where there's

  1068. different customs

  1069. and different ways

  1070. of doing things

  1071. right?

  1072. If all the ambassadors

1073. are in their home country

  1074. they're doing something wrong

  1075. right?

  1076. And so ambassadors

  1077. you have to

  1078. intentionally think

  1079. and Paul does this

  1080. all the time

  1081. through Acts

  1082. you have to

  1083. intentionally think

  1084. how to communicate

  1085. and how to represent

  1086. your nation's values

  1087. in this foreign environment

  1088. right?

  1089. That's why Paul says

  1090. in verse 16

  1091. verse 17

  1092. he says

  1093. we don't judge

  1094. people any longer

  1095. according to the flesh

  1096. everybody else judges

  1097. it according to

  1098. the world standards

  1099. according to race

  1100. according to

  1101. appearance

  1102. according to your intellect

  1103. according to how much

  1104. education you have

  1105. that's how everybody else

  1106. judges people

  1107. but he says

1108. we have come to know Christ

  1109. we're seeing Christ

  1110. differently now

  1111. and if anyone

  1112. is in Christ

  1113. he's a new creation

1114. the old has passed away

1115. and the new has come

  1116. he's saying

  1117. he's saying you're part

  1118. of a different world

  1119. a different kingdom

  1120. that works

  1121. and is embodied

  1122. in a different way

  1123. and so as ambassadors

  1124. we're going to do

  1125. things differently

  1126. we're going to be

  1127. thinking intentionally

  1128. in a place

  1129. of division

  1130. a place where

  1131. people are so segregated

  1132. we're going to think

  1133. how can we embody

  1134. that message

  1135. of reconciliation

  1136. reconciliation

  1137. last week we talked

  1138. about praying

  1139. for God to open

  1140. our eyes

  1141. to see the people

  1142. around us

  1143. how many of us

  1144. have actually been

  1145. praying that this week

  1146. because God wants

  1147. us to start

  1148. all ambassadorship

  1149. starts in that prayer

1150. it starts in the prayer

  1151. to God

  1152. knowing we cannot

  1153. do this by ourselves

  1154. but it's not just

  1155. that we pray

  1156. it's also

  1157. ambassadors

  1158. are putting

  1159. in the effort

  1160. just as Paul

  1161. has put in

  1162. all the effort

  1163. with reaching out

  1164. the gospel

  1165. to intentionally

  1166. think and plan

  1167. of how to represent

  1168. your king

  1169. and display his goodness

  1170. to the people

  1171. around you

  1172. you know

  1173. in my building

  1174. no one talks

  1175. to each other

  1176. maybe your building

  1177. is a friendly building

  1178. mine is not

  1179. so

  1180. here's a place

  1181. where people

  1182. are alienated

  1183. from each other

  1184. how can we bring

  1185. God's goodness

  1186. into that place

  1187. so I tried

  1188. taking around

  1189. chocolates

  1190. to my neighbours

  1191. didn't work

  1192. everyone's thinking

  1193. are you trying to

  1194. sell me something

1195. or now I've got to

  1196. owe you something

1197. so just shut the door

  1198. right

  1199. doesn't work

  1200. so then

  1201. instead of just

  1202. getting discouraged

  1203. you go

  1204. how can I

  1205. God show us

  1206. some ideas

  1207. of how we can

  1208. do this

  1209. so instead

  1210. my wife made

  1211. some dessert

  1212. one day

  1213. there was

  1214. some left

  1215. over

  1216. and so

  1217. we actually

  1218. ended up

  1219. just taking

  1220. it round

  1221. to the neighbours

  1222. it was amazing

  1223. everyone just

  1224. opened their door

  1225. and we started

  1226. chatting with them

  1227. and there was

  1228. this openness

  1229. because we were

  1230. trying to demonstrate

  1231. the restoring

  1232. power of God

  1233. and actually

  1234. was I sharing

  1235. the gospel

  1236. at that moment

  1237. no I didn't

  1238. but actually

  1239. what I was doing

  1240. we were providing

  1241. the context

  1242. we were setting

  1243. the table

  1244. of demonstrating

  1245. a glimpse

  1246. of the goodness

  1247. of God

  1248. and so

  1249. through that

  1250. actually

  1251. one guy

  1252. he said

  1253. oh come back

  1254. to my place

  1255. come and you can

  1256. have some dinner

  1257. with me

  1258. and so I came

  1259. back to his place

  1260. and then we had

  1261. a drink

  1262. and over that

  1263. that was the context

  1264. in which we were

  1265. able to talk about

  1266. how the gospels

1267. at work in my life

  1268. and how it's shaping

  1269. just the way

  1270. do ordinary decisions

  1271. like speaking to

  1272. playing football

  1273. with a whole load

  1274. of Nepalese kids

  1275. on a Thursday night

  1276. and then from that

  1277. you're able to talk

  1278. about Jesus

  1279. do you see

  1280. ambassadors

  1281. embody

  1282. so that we might

  1283. be able to share

  1284. and I don't know

  1285. what your context

  1286. is

  1287. but how often

  1288. and I just thought

  1289. I was convicted

  1290. even about this

  1291. for myself

  1292. how often

  1293. in our CGs

  1294. or with your spouse

  1295. with your friends

  1296. do you ever

  1297. intentionally sit

  1298. planning

  1299. and thinking

  1300. and praying

  1301. about where do we

  1302. see alienation

  1303. in my office

  1304. in my family

  1305. in my neighborhood

  1306. and then thinking

  1307. how can we bring

  1308. the reconciling

  1309. love of God

  1310. into that context

  1311. how often

  1312. do we think

  1313. about that

  1314. and we're doing

1315. it not as a project

  1316. but out of love

  1317. you know

  1318. this week

  1319. I want to challenge

  1320. us in your community

  1321. group

  1322. take 15 minutes

  1323. in your community

  1324. group

  1325. to actually

  1326. intentionally

  1327. think

  1328. and pray

  1329. and plan

  1330. and say

  1331. God

  1332. where are the places

  1333. that I'm rubbing

  1334. up against

  1335. where I see

  1336. alienation

  1337. and division

1338. and how can I bring

  1339. how can we bring

  1340. your love

  1341. into that place

  1342. because if we're

  1343. doing that

  1344. as a community

  1345. I mean

  1346. just think

  1347. how much

  1348. how much time

  1349. do we spend

  1350. planning

  1351. and thinking

  1352. all the stuff

  1353. that we want

  1354. to do

  1355. for our kingdoms

  1356. and our work

  1357. and our careers

  1358. right

  1359. but he says

  1360. when the gospel

  1361. gets into you

  1362. we're not just

  1363. living for ourselves

  1364. we're living

  1365. for him

  1366. who loved us

  1367. what an amazing

  1368. community

  1369. it would be

  1370. if all of us

  1371. are thinking

  1372. like that

  1373. think how much

  1374. the light

  1375. would shine

  1376. in your office

  1377. in your workplace

  1378. wherever you go

  1379. as together

  1380. sometimes I don't

  1381. have ideas

  1382. I'm like

  1383. I have no idea

  1384. what to do

  1385. so you come together

1386. and you talk about it

1387. and God will use you

  1388. in amazing ways

  1389. because ambassadors

  1390. embody

  1391. their king

  1392. and their reconciliation

  1393. does that make sense

  1394. okay

  1395. we're nearly there

  1396. two other things

  1397. ambassadors

  1398. they don't just

  1399. speak on God's behalf

  1400. that message

  1401. of reconciliation

  1402. they don't just

  1403. embody the message

  1404. you know

  1405. ambassadors

  1406. are also held

  1407. accountable

  1408. Paul says

1409. he says in verse 10

1410. which is not in your passage

1411. but it just comes before

  1412. he says

  1413. we will all appear

  1414. before the judgment seat

  1415. of Christ

  1416. so that each one

  1417. may receive

  1418. what is due

  1419. for what he's done

  1420. in the body

  1421. whether good or evil

  1422. and then he says

1423. knowing the fear of God

1424. we seek to persuade men

  1425. see Paul is saying

  1426. that the evaluation

  1427. of my life

  1428. is not based

  1429. on what everybody else

  1430. thinks this way

  1431. it's based on

  1432. what God thinks

  1433. this way

  1434. and he's saying

  1435. what God thinks

  1436. matters more to him

1437. than what other people think

  1438. and that's what fear

  1439. means here

  1440. it's that sense of

  1441. his opinion of me

1442. has so much more weight

  1443. than anybody else's

  1444. and he says

  1445. there's going to be

  1446. a judgment

1447. at the end of the time

  1448. for some

  1449. that's going to be

  1450. a judgment

  1451. where salvation

  1452. is at stake

  1453. for believers

1454. salvation is not at stake

  1455. but what's at stake

  1456. is the reward

  1457. of the joy

  1458. of pleasing our king

  1459. he's saying

  1460. if you're an ambassador

  1461. for China

  1462. in the US

  1463. and you spend

  1464. all of your days

  1465. in Florida

  1466. on a luxury yacht

  1467. fishing

  1468. others may look

  1469. at you in envy

  1470. and wish they had

  1471. your lifestyle

  1472. other people

  1473. may respect you

  1474. for having such

  1475. a place

1476. that you can do that

  1477. but when Beijing

  1478. rings up

  1479. and says

  1480. how are diplomatic

  1481. relations going

  1482. with the Americans

  1483. and you say

  1484. well not so good

  1485. but I just caught

  1486. an amazing tuna

  1487. the other day

  1488. that's not going

1489. to get you a bonus

  1490. right

  1491. because at the end

  1492. of the day

  1493. what God thinks

  1494. about us

  1495. is more important

  1496. than living

  1497. just for myself

  1498. or what anybody

  1499. else thinks

  1500. and he says

  1501. don't receive

  1502. the grace of God

  1503. in vain

  1504. that's 6 verse 1

  1505. you don't want

1506. to get to the end

  1507. of your life

1508. and see that the very

  1509. mission God

  1510. has called you to

  1511. you missed

  1512. because you were

  1513. so wrapped up

  1514. in your comforts

  1515. in your investments

  1516. in your kingdom

  1517. and he says

  1518. we have a judge

  1519. he's a loving judge

  1520. he's our savior

  1521. so we don't live

  1522. in crippling fear

  1523. wondering what

  1524. he's going to

  1525. think about us

  1526. but we don't want

1527. to get to the end

  1528. of the lives

  1529. like a 70 year old

  1530. that I once taught

  1531. who came to me

  1532. and he said

  1533. I wasted it

  1534. I wasted it

  1535. I wasted my life

  1536. and we don't want

  1537. to get to God

  1538. and say

  1539. man

  1540. all I gave him

  1541. was a tuna fish

  1542. but instead

  1543. we say

  1544. the gift of God

  1545. that you entrusted me

  1546. this reconciliation

  1547. this grace

  1548. that you gave me

  1549. and it was meant

  1550. to be brought

  1551. to the people

  1552. around me

  1553. I don't want

  1554. to be more interested

  1555. in my computer games

  1556. or my retirement

  1557. than that

  1558. do you see

  1559. what he's saying

  1560. ambassadors

  1561. are evaluated

  1562. and judged

  1563. by him

  1564. not by

  1565. and appraised

  1566. not by just

  1567. what we want

  1568. or what other

  1569. people want

  1570. so we speak

  1571. on God's behalf

  1572. we embody

  1573. his message

  1574. we're evaluated

  1575. and appraised

  1576. by God himself

  1577. not what anyone

  1578. else thinks

  1579. our great savior

  1580. the last thing

  1581. ambassadors

  1582. need Christ

  1583. if you're a Christian

1584. who here is an ambassador

  1585. every Christian

  1586. is an ambassador

  1587. that means

  1588. there's never a time

  1589. when you're not

  1590. an ambassador

  1591. when you're walking

  1592. down the street

  1593. you're an ambassador

  1594. when you're

  1595. playing football

  1596. you're an ambassador

1597. when you're on the phone

  1598. you're an ambassador

  1599. ambassadorship

  1600. is a 24-7 thing

  1601. right

  1602. because

  1603. this is scary

  1604. actually

  1605. because that means

  1606. sometimes people

  1607. are watching you

  1608. right

  1609. and

  1610. if you act

  1611. unkindly

  1612. and harshly

  1613. and impatiently

  1614. what do people

  1615. think about

  1616. your king

  1617. and your country

  1618. you know

  1619. isn't the behavior

  1620. of Christians

  1621. sometimes the number

  1622. one reason

  1623. why many people

  1624. say they don't

  1625. believe

  1626. and that

  1627. puts a lot

  1628. of pressure

  1629. on

  1630. right

  1631. and sometimes

  1632. many of us

  1633. would prefer

  1634. not to share

  1635. the gospel

  1636. with people

  1637. not to

  1638. not to even

  1639. say that we're

  1640. a believer

  1641. because we don't

  1642. feel we're a very

  1643. good ambassador

  1644. anyone ever feel

  1645. like that

  1646. the problem

  1647. is

  1648. if you're a

  1649. Christian

  1650. you're always

  1651. an ambassador

  1652. so if you're

  1653. trying to pretend

  1654. that you're not

  1655. one

  1656. kind of

  1657. disguising

  1658. yourself

  1659. putting on

  1660. dark glasses

  1661. a false beard

  1662. whatever it is

  1663. and then somebody

  1664. finds out

  1665. that you actually

  1666. go to church

  1667. that's even worse

  1668. because you're

  1669. a true fraud

  1670. right

  1671. so instead

  1672. rather than

  1673. saying

  1674. oh I'm not

  1675. a very good

  1676. ambassador

  1677. therefore I'm

  1678. not going to

  1679. be an ambassador

  1680. can you not

  1681. see that when

  1682. people around

  1683. you

  1684. maybe point

  1685. out things

  1686. that you

  1687. are not

  1688. doing

  1689. as an

  1690. ambassador

  1691. should

  1692. that that

  1693. is grace

  1694. to you

  1695. it is grace

  1696. because people

  1697. are inadvertently

  1698. encouraging you

  1699. to grow

  1700. as an

  1701. ambassador

  1702. it is grace

  1703. to you

  1704. because they're

  1705. pushing you

  1706. back to

  1707. repentance

  1708. and to

  1709. come back

  1710. to your

  1711. savior

  1712. who has

  1713. loving arms

  1714. which are

  1715. welcoming you

  1716. opening his

  1717. heart to you

  1718. so you may

  1719. experience grace

  1720. just like

  1721. with Jim

  1722. God is

  1723. persistently

  1724. calling you

  1725. back to

  1726. himself

  1727. even

  1728. sometimes

  1729. through

  1730. other

  1731. people

  1732. so evangelism

  1733. and being an

  1734. ambassador

  1735. is a spur

  1736. to being

  1737. more godly

  1738. it will help

  1739. you to hold

  1740. your tongue

  1741. more

  1742. I can promise

  1743. you

  1744. but it's a spur

  1745. to see how much

  1746. more you need

  1747. the gospel

  1748. in your own

  1749. life

  1750. that you

  1751. need to see

  1752. this amazing

  1753. sense of

  1754. reconciliation

  1755. so that if a

  1756. colleague ever

  1757. points out

  1758. but I thought

  1759. you were a

  1760. Christian

  1761. you can go

  1762. without

  1763. defensiveness

  1764. without embarrassment

  1765. you can go

  1766. man yeah I

  1767. really did

  1768. mess up

  1769. I'm sorry

  1770. because I

  1771. didn't live out

  1772. who I should

  1773. be

  1774. but you know

  1775. I have an

  1776. amazing savior

  1777. who takes

  1778. even people

  1779. like me

  1780. and he

  1781. demonstrates

  1782. incredible

  1783. grace to

  1784. me

  1785. who is

  1786. walking

  1787. with me

  1788. and persistently

  1789. again and

  1790. again he

  1791. runs after

  1792. me

  1793. and God's

  1794. love for

  1795. you becomes

  1796. so much

  1797. more real

  1798. and that

  1799. then encourages

  1800. you to then

  1801. share the gospel

  1802. even more

  1803. because you see

  1804. how great a

  1805. savior we have

  1806. you know

  1807. Paul was

  1808. willing to

  1809. give his

  1810. life for

  1811. this mission

  1812. of evangelism

  1813. because he

  1814. knew he

  1815. was the

  1816. worst of

  1817. sinners

  1818. and yet

  1819. God had

  1820. made Christ

  1821. who knew

  1822. no sin

  1823. to be

  1824. sin for

  1825. him

  1826. so that

  1827. in him

  1828. he might

  1829. become the

  1830. righteousness

  1831. of God

  1832. and that's

  1833. the same

  1834. for every

  1835. single one

  1836. of us

  1837. let me

  1838. pray

  1839. father you

  1840. have called

  1841. us

  1842. you have

  1843. called us

  1844. first to

  1845. yourself

  1846. thank you

  1847. so much

  1848. for your

  1849. reconciling

  1850. love

  1851. love

  1852. I pray

  1853. right now

  1854. for those

  1855. of us

  1856. who are

  1857. here

  1858. who

  1859. don't

  1860. know

  1861. you

  1862. I pray

  1863. as

  1864. in

  1865. Colin's

  1866. testimony

  1867. for those

  1868. who maybe

  1869. have heard

  1870. this message

  1871. many many

  1872. times

  1873. but I

  1874. pray today

  1875. would be

  1876. the day

  1877. of salvation

  1878. I pray

  1879. today

  1880. that you

  1881. would speak

  1882. into their

  1883. hearts and

  1884. lives

  1885. and show

  1886. them

  1887. your

  1888. incredible

  1889. love

  1890. so they

  1891. turn in

  1892. repentance

  1893. and find

  1894. a God

  1895. who wants

  1896. to welcome

  1897. them home

  1898. I pray

  1899. for those

  1900. of us

  1901. who are

  1902. believers

  1903. I pray

  1904. for those

  1905. of us

  1906. who think

  1907. we're

  1908. inadequate

  1909. those

  1910. of us

  1911. who

  1912. even

  1913. the

  1914. thought

  1915. of doing

  1916. evangelism

  1917. and sharing

  1918. our faith

  1919. is something

  1920. that just

  1921. scares us

  1922. I pray

  1923. that you

  1924. would show

  1925. us

  1926. your

  1927. incredible

  1928. love

  1929. the

  1930. incredible

  1931. privilege

  1932. the

  1933. incredible

  1934. way that

  1935. you have

  1936. called us

  1937. together

  1938. to be

  1939. partners

  1940. with you

  1941. in this

  1942. I pray

  1943. right now

  1944. you would

  1945. be putting

  1946. on our

  1947. minds

  1948. people

  1949. that we

  1950. should be

  1951. reaching out

  1952. to

  1953. I pray

  1954. we'd be

  1955. a church

  1956. that

  1957. is not

  1958. just so

  1959. focused

  1960. on our

  1961. own

  1962. things

  1963. but we're

  1964. actually

  1965. taking

  1966. time

  1967. to think

  1968. about

  1969. the people

  1970. around us

  1971. in our

  1972. offices

  1973. in our

  1974. neighborhoods

  1975. and to

  1976. begin to

  1977. say

  1978. God

  1979. how can

  1980. we show

  1981. your amazing

  1982. reconciling

  1983. love to

  1984. them

  1985. change

  1986. us

  1987. we pray

  1988. in your

  1989. amazing

  1990. name

  1991. amen

  1992. love to

  1993. kind
