  1. Welcome back to a short time of worship with us here in Becluse.

  2. We continue to look through Luke's Gospel, see Jesus meeting a variety of different women

  3. and considering how Jesus, by his grace, changes everything.

  4. So we'll be there in just a couple of minutes, but let's begin hearing from Psalm 130,

  5. a couple of verses there, verses 6 and 7.

  6. Though the Lord is exalted, he looks kindly on the lowly.

  7. Though lofty, he sees them from afar.

  8. Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life.

  9. You stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes.

  10. With your right hand, you save me.

  11. Let's pray to the God who sees us now.

  12. Lord, we praise you that you are the high and the exalted one, the glorious one,

  13. the God who deserves all praise and honour.

  14. We thank you too that you are so full of kindness,

  15. that you look down on those who are low, those who are struggling, those who are weary.

  16. We thank you that you are the God who sees us.

  17. Just as Hagar, way back in the book of Genesis, when she was struggling and feeling alone,

  18. and you came to help her.

  19. She could confess, truly, you are the God who sees me.

  20. Lord, we thank you for that reality.

  21. We thank you that in your mercy, as you saw the misery that sin would bring,

  22. you established that plan to save us in and through the sending of your son, Jesus.

  23. We thank you that you have stretched out your hand to save us.

  24. And so we pray that we would take comfort and hope that we would look to you as the one who sees us.

  25. That we would recognise more of your character and more of your love,

  26. that we might be drawn to you.

  27. And so we pray that you would work through your word today to soften our hearts,

  28. to cause us to praise and worship you.

  29. We ask in Jesus' name. Amen.

  30. Now, let's read together a short reading from Luke chapter 13.

    Luke 13 chapter mention

  31. We're going to read from verse 10 to verse 17.

  32. Let's hear God's word together.

  33. On a Sabbath, Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues,

  34. and a woman was there who'd been crippled by a spirit for 18 years.

  35. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all.

  36. When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said,

  37. To her, woman, you are set free from your infirmity.

  38. Then he put his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God.

  39. Indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath,

  40. the synagogue leader said to the people,

  41. There are six days for work.

  42. So come and be healed on those days, not on the Sabbath.

  43. The Lord answered him,

  44. You hypocrites!

  45. Doesn't each of you on the Sabbath untie your ox or donkey from the stall and lead it out to give it water?

  46. Then should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham,

  47. whom Satan has kept bound for 18 long years,

  48. be set free on the Sabbath day from what bound her?

  49. When he said this,

  50. all his opponents were humiliated,

  51. but the people were delighted with all the wonderful things he was doing.

  52. So today, let's see how Jesus changes everything for a disabled woman.

  53. One of the highlights, I guess, for me during lockdown

  54. was the chance that I had to talk about the church

  55. and to talk about Christianity with our school's primary fours.

  56. As they were doing their religion topic,

  57. I got to be part of a rather chaotic Zoom call

  58. across three different classes to about 100 P4s.

  59. And they were so enthusiastic and they had so many questions.

  60. Questions about what I did,

  61. questions about what was the church like,

  62. what do we do in church,

  63. do we have a holy book.

  64. It was really interesting to talk with the P4s.

  65. There was a sense that they were understanding

  66. that faith has a set of beliefs

  67. and that those beliefs then influence practice

  68. on how a person lives,

  69. in our case, Christianity.

  70. Those practices, those beliefs should shape how we live.

  71. The focus of today's encounter for us

  72. is on the one hand,

  73. that this synagogue ruler who we meet,

  74. who should have known

  75. what God and his word is all about,

  76. but he didn't.

  77. And as a result, he was cold and he was indifferent

  78. to the needs of this woman

  79. and no doubt other sufferers do.

  80. But then there's Jesus,

  81. whose actions and words stand as a reminder

  82. that God is merciful.

  83. He is the son of God

  84. and he is expressing the mercy of God.

  85. He shows mercy and he cares

  86. and he heals the woman who was crippled,

  87. who was disabled.

  88. I was thinking about this,

  89. strangely enough,

  90. this Wednesday morning.

  91. I don't know, boys and girls,

  92. if you remember walking to school

  93. on Wednesday morning,

  94. but I was absolutely chucking it down,

  95. wasn't it?

  96. And so I'd done the drop-off

  97. and I was walking,

  98. I was almost home

  99. and I was soaked to the skin.

  100. And then I realised,

  101. I actually had an umbrella with me.

  102. I just never thought to use it.

  103. In a sense, it's a picture of the religious life

  104. with no heart.

  105. The synagogue ruler,

  106. he had what he needed.

  107. He had God's day, the Sabbath.

  108. He had God's word being taught to him,

  109. but he wasn't using it.

  110. He did not have God's love

  111. and God's mercy.

  112. And so in these two figures,

  113. Jesus and the synagogue ruler,

  114. we get portraits,

  115. we get the beauty of mercy

  116. as we see it in Christ.

  117. And we see sort of the ugliness

  118. of indifference,

  119. of a loveless religion,

  120. of loveless Christianity on the other.

  121. And so my prayer for each one of us

  122. is that we would be drawn to Jesus

  123. to find mercy from him

  124. and that having been drawn in to receive mercy,

  125. we would then be merciful as people.

  126. That we would see the warning of the synagogue ruler,

  127. that we might repent of our coldness,

  128. of our lack of mercy,

  129. and that we would together celebrate the power,

  130. the power of transforming grace

  131. that we see occur in this disabled woman.

  132. Let's begin, first of all,

  133. with our setting.

  134. Now, setting matters.

  135. We know that certain settings

  136. go with particular qualities in a story.

  137. So if you're, for example,

  138. if you're watching a war movie,

  139. some certain themes will be courage and brotherhood.

  140. If a story is set on the sports field,

  141. you are going to almost certainly encounter

  142. the determination of the underdogs.

  143. If your setting is a galaxy far, far away,

  144. you're going to be dealing with good versus evil

  145. and the saving of the universe.

  146. So what's our setting?

  147. What's our context here?

  148. On a Sabbath,

  149. Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues.

  150. Okay, so two things to notice.

  151. One, it's on the Sabbath.

  152. Two, it's in the synagogue

  153. and the word of God is being taught

  154. and taught by none other than Jesus.

  155. So the question then is,

  156. what should we expect?

  157. If that's the setting,

  158. what should we expect of this story?

  159. Well, for the synagogue ruler,

  160. Sabbath and synagogue mean laws and rules.

  161. For Jesus,

  162. Sabbath and synagogue mean the promise of rest,

  163. the hope of rescue

  164. and the reality of rejoicing.

  165. And even just in that,

  166. we can see, can't we,

  167. good news.

  168. Good news that Jesus would save you and me

  169. from dull, lifeless, loveless religion.

  170. He brings the beating heart of God's love and mercy

  171. to bear in this situation

  172. and for this woman.

  173. And it's wonderful to see.

  174. So let's think about setting just again.

  175. Sabbath, what was that about?

  176. There's, I think, at least two truths

  177. that we need to recognise

  178. when we think about the Sabbath.

  179. First, we can go to Exodus 20,

  180. where we read the Ten Commandments.

  181. Exodus 20 at verse 8.

  182. Remember the Sabbath day

  183. by keeping it holy.

  184. Six days you shall labour

  185. and do all your work,

  186. but the seventh day

  187. is a Sabbath to the Lord your God.

  188. On it you shall not do any work.

  189. For in six days the Lord

  190. made the heavens and the earth,

  191. the sea and all that's in them,

  192. but he rested on the seventh day.

  193. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day

  194. and made it holy.

  195. So Sabbath is a chance for us

  196. to enjoy the gift of rest,

  197. to rest from work,

  198. to remember one's creator

  199. and to worship.

  200. But then again,

  201. in Deuteronomy chapter 5,

    Deuteronomy 5 chapter mention

  202. as Moses again,

  203. he rehearses the Ten Commandments

  204. before the people,

  205. there's a different emphasis.

  206. As he says in verse 12,

  207. observe the Sabbath day

  208. by keeping it holy.

  209. Six days you shall labour

  210. and do all your work,

  211. but the seventh day

  212. is a Sabbath to the Lord your God.

  213. And so there's the emphasis

  214. on resting.

  215. But then in verse 15,

  216. remember that you were slaves in Egypt

  217. and that the Lord your God

  218. brought you out of there

  219. with a mighty hand

  220. and an outstretched arm.

  221. Therefore the Lord your God

  222. has commanded you

  223. to observe the Sabbath day.

  224. So what's new there?

  225. Not just the gift of rest,

  226. but the gift of rescue.

  227. Every Sabbath they were to remember

  228. that God their creator

  229. was also God their saviour.

  230. And so that's what should have been happening

  231. on this Sabbath.

  232. And then what about the synagogue?

  233. You went to a first century,

  234. what happened there in the synagogue?

  235. Well, there was worship.

  236. The people of God would gather

  237. to worship before God.

  238. God's word would be read.

  239. The Old Testament was what they had.

  240. God's word was read and taught

  241. and there would be prayers being made.

  242. The intention was, therefore,

  243. that there would be a reminder

  244. of their creator.

  245. A reminder of the God

  246. who had entered into covenant with them,

  247. who had made promises to them.

  248. A reminder that God

  249. had been and would be

  250. their redeemer.

  251. Of course,

  252. the synagogue,

  253. and as the word of God

  254. was read,

  255. would also be a reminder to them

  256. of God's holiness,

  257. that he is perfect

  258. and he is without sin

  259. and he is holy.

  260. It would also be a reminder,

  261. therefore,

  262. of human sin.

  263. But then also,

  264. they'd be reminded

  265. of God's mercy

  266. in his forgiveness

  267. and in making a way.

  268. In the Old Testament,

  269. it was through the sacrifices

  270. that would come to be,

  271. seem to be,

  272. about Jesus

  273. and his perfect sacrifice.

  274. But there's our setting,

  275. Sabbath and synagogue.

  276. And when you think about that,

  277. it's perfect

  278. for Jesus then to,

  279. as it were,

  280. to recreate

  281. this woman,

  282. to give her rest

  283. from her suffering,

  284. to bring rescue

  285. from her spiritual bondage

  286. so that she might rejoice

  287. in God's salvation

  288. and God's mercy.

  289. Just before we move on,

  290. I think this matters

  291. for our Sunday,

  292. the Lord's Day

  293. for the people of God,

  294. changing from a Saturday

  295. to a Sunday

  296. because on the Sunday,

  297. Jesus rose from the dead

  298. and everything became new.

  299. So God, in his kindness,

  300. gives us this weekly rhythm,

  301. a weekly rhythm,

  302. to rest,

  303. to say,

  304. do you know what,

  305. I'm going to trust God.

  306. I'm going to rest.

  307. It's a chance for us

  308. to remember

  309. the gospel.

  310. As we gather

  311. every week

  312. in the name

  313. of the Lord Jesus

  314. who died for us

  315. and rose again,

  316. we remember

  317. God's gift of salvation.

  318. And this weekly rhythm

  319. is a chance for us

  320. to refocus

  321. on our God,

  322. to be drawn back to him

  323. as we recognise

  324. how quickly we're drawn away

  325. from him

  326. and can grow cold

  327. to his love.

  328. It also matters

  329. for our Sunday,

  330. for our Lord's Day

  331. and for every day,

  332. really,

  333. when we think about

  334. our Bible teaching.

  335. Now, remember,

  336. in this story,

  337. Jesus was the teacher

  338. and we get indications

  339. through the Gospels

  340. of how Jesus read

  341. and taught

  342. the Old Testament.

  343. He would say,

  344. all of these

  345. testify about me.

  346. He would say,

  347. these are fulfilled

  348. in me.

  349. All those great promises,

  350. they are about me.

  351. So as we read

  352. the big story

  353. of God

  354. creating a world

  355. to know and enjoy

  356. his love,

  357. but of people

  358. turning to sin

  359. and falling

  360. and things becoming

  361. broken,

  362. and as we read

  363. of God's

  364. redeeming love

  365. and his covenant

  366. and his commitment

  367. to save a people

  368. for himself

  369. by his grace,

  370. and as we see

  371. that fulfilled

  372. in the sending

  373. of Jesus

  374. to come into

  375. our world,

  376. to die in our place

  377. and to rise

  378. for our salvation,

  379. and with the promise

  380. that Jesus will

  381. one day return

  382. from heaven

  383. to make everything new,

  384. to bring his people

  385. to be with him,

  386. we recognise

  387. in the big story

  388. of the Bible,

  389. Jesus stands

  390. at the centre.

  391. And we are drawn

  392. into

  393. that story.

  394. There is

  395. to,

  396. and we'll see it

  397. throughout,

  398. I think this

  399. conversation

  400. that Jesus has

  401. with the synagogue

  402. leader,

  403. there's a warning

  404. about what

  405. Michael Wilcock

  406. calls fossilised

  407. worship,

  408. that it's

  409. very possible

  410. to have

  411. our Lord's

  412. Day

  413. or our

  414. reading of

  415. God's Word

  416. made

  417. lifeless

  418. by burying

  419. it under

  420. layers of

  421. rules and

  422. traditions.

  423. It's what the

  424. Pharisees did.

  425. it's what

  426. man-made

  427. religion

  428. would

  429. seek

  430. to do.

  431. We want

  432. to hear

  433. God

  434. and allow

  435. him to

  436. speak

  437. in his

  438. word.

  439. That we

  440. would ask

  441. God

  442. to make

  443. Sunday

  444. in a very

  445. real sense

  446. the highlight

  447. of our

  448. week.

  449. To know

  450. that he

  451. would meet

  452. us

  453. in our

  454. gathering,

  455. that he

  456. would meet

  457. us by

  458. the Spirit

  459. in his

  460. word and

  461. that he

  462. would give

  463. us fresh

  464. mercy and

  465. grace for

  466. our journey

  467. of faith

  468. for our

  469. coming week.

  470. So that's

  471. our setting.

  472. Now the

  473. woman is

  474. introduced in

  475. verse 11 and

  476. I want us to

  477. notice the

  478. response of

  479. Jesus.

  480. Just read

  481. verse 11

  482. again.

  483. A woman

  484. was there

  485. who'd been

  486. crippled by

  487. a spirit

  488. for 18

  489. years.

  490. She was

  491. bent over

  492. and could

  493. not straighten

  494. up at

  495. all.

  496. Can we

  497. picture this

  498. woman?

  499. Life

  500. being

  501. agonising,

  502. this crippling

  503. illness.

  504. Imagine the

  505. effort it

  506. would have

  507. taken her,

  508. hunched as

  509. she was,

  510. to get to

  511. the synagogue.

  512. She obviously

  513. wanted to

  514. worship with

  515. the people

  516. of God.

  517. 18 years

  518. of suffering,

  519. feeling

  520. most likely

  521. like an

  522. outsider,

  523. perhaps with

  524. nothing much

  525. to offer.

  526. I came

  527. across a

  528. writer this

  529. week by

  530. the name

  531. of Stephanie

  532. Hubach.

  533. I don't

  534. know if

  535. that's how

  536. you say

  537. her second

  538. name.

  539. So she's

  540. an author

  541. but she's

  542. also the

  543. mother of

  544. a child

  545. with Down

  546. syndrome.

  547. And she

  548. said this

  549. as she was

  550. thinking about

  551. the impact

  552. of the fall

  553. into sin

  554. from Adam

  555. and Eve

  556. back in

  557. Genesis

  558. 18.

  559. because of

  560. sin,

  561. our world

  562. became an

  563. abnormal

  564. world.

  565. This world

  566. is not the

  567. way it was

  568. meant to

  569. be.

  570. Disability

  571. is simply

  572. a more

  573. noticeable

  574. form of

  575. the brokenness

  576. that is

  577. common to

  578. human

  579. experience.

  580. A normal

  581. part of

  582. life in

  583. an abnormal

  584. world.

  585. Now what

  586. will Jesus

  587. do as

  588. he, the

  589. perfectly

  590. holy one,

  591. comes into

  592. this now

  593. abnormal

  594. world because

  595. of sin?

  596. As he

  597. comes to

  598. establish his

  599. kingdom, as

  600. he comes to

  601. go to war

  602. against Satan

  603. and the

  604. forces of

  605. evil to

  606. defeat sin

  607. and to

  608. give signposts

  609. of what his

  610. future kingdom

  611. will be like,

  612. what will

  613. Jesus do?

  614. Verse 12.

  615. Jesus saw

  616. her.

  617. Jesus is

  618. the God

  619. who sees.

  620. Isn't that

  621. beautiful?

  622. This lady

  623. stooped so

  624. low as she

  625. suffers, she's

  626. not overlooked.

  627. And it's

  628. noticeable that

  629. Jesus is the

  630. one who takes

  631. the initiative.

  632. He sees and

  633. he calls.

  634. Here is

  635. Jesus' heart

  636. of compassion

  637. and mercy

  638. going out

  639. again.

  640. So Jesus

  641. sees her

  642. and then

  643. Jesus spoke

  644. to her.

  645. So again

  646. Jesus called

  647. her forward.

  648. It's as if

  649. he wants his

  650. power and

  651. mercy to be

  652. on full

  653. display and

  654. neon lights

  655. highlighted.

  656. And again

  657. knowing the

  658. heart of the

  659. synagogue ruler

  660. and his

  661. legalising

  662. tendencies,

  663. you'll be

  664. about mercy

  665. like God

  666. is.

  667. And then

  668. verse 12.

  669. As he

  670. speaks,

  671. women,

  672. you are set

  673. free from

  674. your infirmity.

  675. He uses

  676. freedom,

  677. language.

  678. And of course

  679. what we see

  680. is that her

  681. healing,

  682. her cure,

  683. her freedom

  684. isn't just

  685. physical,

  686. though it

  687. is physical

  688. because immediately

  689. she's

  690. straightened

  691. up.

  692. But it's

  693. also spiritual

  694. because in

  695. verse 11

  696. she's crippled

  697. by a spirit.

  698. In verse 16

  699. we discover

  700. Satan has

  701. kept her

  702. bound.

  703. So Jesus

  704. sees her,

  705. Jesus spoke

  706. to her and

  707. Jesus in a

  708. very real

  709. sense saved

  710. her.

  711. Here is one

  712. of the themes

  713. of Luke

  714. in this section

  715. of particular.

  716. Jesus is going

  717. into battle

  718. against Satan,

  719. against the

  720. forces of evil

  721. and here in

  722. this woman's

  723. life he wins

  724. a victory.

  725. A victory

  726. that anticipates

  727. the cross.

  728. There Jesus

  729. will strike

  730. at the very

  731. heart of

  732. darkness

  733. as he takes

  734. sin on himself

  735. and as he

  736. defeats the

  737. power of sin.

  738. As he conquers

  739. it in his

  740. rising from

  741. the dead.

  742. So her cure

  743. is both

  744. physical and

  745. spiritual.

  746. And the woman's

  747. response,

  748. immediately

  749. she straightened

  750. up.

  751. She praised

  752. God.

  753. She's rejoicing.

  754. That rest

  755. promised in

  756. God's day,

  757. that rescue

  758. promised in

  759. God's day

  760. and in God's

  761. word has

  762. now become

  763. real in

  764. her life

  765. and so her

  766. instinct is

  767. to praise

  768. God.

  769. By way of

  770. applying this

  771. to ourselves,

  772. let's take

  773. this first of

  774. all as a

  775. message of

  776. hope for

  777. us today.

  778. Maybe we're

  779. feeling small,

  780. feeling weak,

  781. feeling weak,

  782. feeling weak,

  783. feeling weak,

  784. feeling weak,

  785. feeling weak,

  786. in the middle of

  787. struggling and

  788. suffering,

  789. and perhaps that's

  790. long term,

  791. maybe overlooked

  792. by others,

  793. feeling like an

  794. outsider,

  795. recognise

  796. Jesus

  797. sees you.

  798. And who is

  799. Jesus?

  800. He is the

  801. Son of God,

  802. the one who

  803. is all

  804. powerful and

  805. also full of

  806. love and

  807. mercy.

  808. This is the

  809. Jesus who

  810. invites us,

  811. come to me

  812. all you who

  813. are weary and

  814. burdened and I

  815. will give you

  816. rest.

  817. Jesus sees

  818. and he knows

  819. and he can

  820. help and he

  821. will be with

  822. you if we

  823. trust him.

  824. It's also a

  825. picture of the

  826. gospel for us,

  827. that's part of the

  828. hope I think,

  829. Jesus who

  830. sees,

  831. who saw

  832. the misery

  833. that sin

  834. would bring,

  835. recognising that

  836. we would be

  837. hopeless and

  838. helpless without

  839. him,

  840. came to be

  841. one of us,

  842. to live in our

  843. place and to

  844. die for our

  845. sin,

  846. so that we

  847. might be

  848. forgiven,

  849. so that we

  850. might have

  851. peace with

  852. God,

  853. that we

  854. might have

  855. eternal life.

  856. He extends

  857. mercy to

  858. you and to

  859. me and for

  860. us.

  861. Our response

  862. is to hear

  863. that call,

  864. is to be

  865. obedient to

  866. the Lord

  867. Jesus,

  868. to put our

  869. trust in

  870. him and

  871. then as we

  872. come to

  873. him and

  874. find forgiveness

  875. and we

  876. come to

  877. find life

  878. from him

  879. and healing

  880. then we

  881. praise him.

  882. So it's a

  883. message of

  884. hope but it's

  885. also I think

  886. a call to

  887. action in a

  888. couple of

  889. ways.

  890. So some of

  891. the primary

  892. four, their

  893. questions,

  894. what is the

  895. church like?

  896. What is it

  897. that you do

  898. in the

  899. church?

  900. Well, here

  901. are two

  902. answers from

  903. this text.

  904. We as the

  905. church, we

  906. should be

  907. merciful,

  908. shouldn't

  909. we?

  910. Jesus sees

  911. the unseen,

  912. the overlooked,

  913. Jesus sees

  914. us and extends

  915. mercy to us

  916. in the gospel

  917. and so

  918. should we.

  919. Churches then

  920. should be the

  921. most inclusive

  922. of places.

  923. That we

  924. should be

  925. eager to

  926. open our

  927. door and

  928. open our

  929. hearts and

  930. open our

  931. lives to

  932. share with

  933. others the

  934. mercy that

  935. God shows

  936. us in

  937. the gospel.

  938. So we

  939. should be

  940. merciful in

  941. light of the

  942. mercy that

  943. we have

  944. received and

  945. we should

  946. worship.

  947. Romans 12

    Romans 12:1

  948. verse 1,

  949. in view of

  950. God's

  951. mercies,

  952. present your

  953. bodies as

  954. living

  955. sacrifices.

  956. So we

  957. can let

  958. God's

  959. day and

  960. let God's

  961. word keep

  962. calling us

  963. back to

  964. that reminder

  965. that we

  966. are called

  967. to live

  968. every day

  969. in every

  970. situation to

  971. the glory

  972. of God.

  973. To present

  974. our bodies as

  975. living sacrifice,

  976. to deny

  977. ourselves, to

  978. say Jesus is

  979. Lord and to

  980. live for him

  981. to be

  982. somebody who

  983. would pass

  984. that mercy

  985. forward.

  986. God.

  987. So that's

  988. the response

  989. of Jesus

  990. but we

  991. also need

  992. to look

  993. in verse

  994. 14 to

  995. 17 at

  996. the rebuke

  997. of Jesus.

  998. Now, for

  999. those of us

  1000. who are

  1001. listening who

  1002. are parents

  1003. and for

  1004. you, if

  1005. you're

  1006. children, I

  1007. wonder how

  1008. often have

  1009. you said

  1010. or have

  1011. you heard

  1012. you really

  1013. should know

  1014. better.

  1015. You really

  1016. should know

  1017. better by

  1018. now.

  1019. Jesus

  1020. would be

  1021. very

  1022. entitled

  1023. to say

  1024. this to

  1025. the

  1026. synagogue

  1027. ruler.

  1028. So, so

  1029. Jesus has

  1030. just healed

  1031. the woman

  1032. and he's

  1033. rescued her,

  1034. given her

  1035. rest.

  1036. What do we

  1037. find from

  1038. verse 14?

  1039. Intignant.

  1040. He's so

  1041. annoyed because

  1042. Jesus had

  1043. healed on the

  1044. Sabbath.

  1045. The synagogue

  1046. leader said

  1047. to the people

  1048. there are six

  1049. days for work

  1050. so come and be

  1051. healed on those

  1052. days, not on the

  1053. Sabbath.

  1054. So he

  1055. interrupts

  1056. Jesus, totally

  1057. changes the

  1058. mood to

  1059. rebuke the

  1060. women who

  1061. actually didn't

  1062. come for

  1063. healing in the

  1064. first place.

  1065. Jesus took

  1066. the initiative

  1067. and he's

  1068. certainly

  1069. rebuking

  1070. Jesus.

  1071. Why are you

  1072. working?

  1073. This is a

  1074. day for

  1075. resting.

  1076. We shouldn't

  1077. do any

  1078. work.

  1079. Jesus

  1080. responds with

  1081. rebuke.

  1082. He calls

  1083. out his

  1084. hypocrisy.

  1085. Verses 15

  1086. and 16.

  1087. Listen, you

  1088. care for an

  1089. animal if it's

  1090. thirsty, you

  1091. give it a

  1092. drink.

  1093. How much

  1094. more should

  1095. you want

  1096. mercy for

  1097. this woman?

  1098. This person

  1099. made in the

  1100. image of

  1101. God with

  1102. dignity and

  1103. value, you

  1104. should know

  1105. better.

  1106. As a leader

  1107. of the

  1108. synagogue, you

  1109. should be a

  1110. leader in

  1111. extending mercy

  1112. as a

  1113. representative.

  1114. God, you

  1115. should know

  1116. better.

  1117. It's the

  1118. Sabbath.

  1119. It's a day

  1120. of remembering

  1121. God's mercy

  1122. and giving

  1123. rest from

  1124. work, and

  1125. giving rescue

  1126. from slavery.

  1127. mercy.

  1128. It's not

  1129. a

  1130. lot, it's

  1131. a

  1132. mercy.

  1133. And you're

  1134. in the

  1135. synagogue.

  1136. You're

  1137. listening to

  1138. God's word,

  1139. you're

  1140. listening to

  1141. Jesus, the

  1142. word made

  1143. flesh, who's

  1144. now teaching

  1145. that word, and

  1146. it's all about

  1147. salvation and

  1148. renewal.

  1149. This guy, he's

  1150. big on law, but

  1151. he's not big on

  1152. mercy.

  1153. And Jesus

  1154. rebukes him.

  1155. Verse 17, we

  1156. discover that this

  1157. synagogue ruler, he

  1158. failed to read the

  1159. room, didn't he?

  1160. When he said

  1161. this, all his

  1162. opponents were

  1163. humiliated, but

  1164. the people were

  1165. delighted with all

  1166. wonderful things

  1167. Jesus was doing.

  1168. Public opinion is

  1169. with Jesus, because

  1170. they can recognise

  1171. cold, loveless

  1172. religion is ugly, but

  1173. mercy and love in

  1174. Jesus, they're

  1175. beautiful, and

  1176. they see it, and

  1177. they're drawn to

  1178. that.

  1179. Here again is a

  1180. warning to

  1181. religious folks.

  1182. we can be in

  1183. God's word, on

  1184. God's day, doing

  1185. all kinds of

  1186. religious duties

  1187. and activities, and

  1188. yet still be

  1189. hard-hearted, still

  1190. be missing the

  1191. point, making it

  1192. about us, or

  1193. making it about

  1194. rule-keeping, rather

  1195. than celebrating

  1196. God's grace and

  1197. mercy and his

  1198. salvation.

  1199. salvation.

  1200. It's a reminder

  1201. that we must be

  1202. both hearers and

  1203. doers.

  1204. There's also

  1205. here, though, the

  1206. promise of the

  1207. gospel.

  1208. Look at verse

  1209. 16.

  1210. Should not this

  1211. woman, a

  1212. daughter of

  1213. Abraham, whom

  1214. Satan has kept

  1215. bound for 18

  1216. long years, be set

  1217. free on the

  1218. Sabbath day from

  1219. what bound

  1220. her?

  1221. What does

  1222. faith in Jesus

  1223. bring?

  1224. It brings

  1225. freedom.

  1226. Just as this

  1227. woman was set

  1228. free, faith in

  1229. Jesus sets us

  1230. free from the

  1231. power of sin, from

  1232. the reality of

  1233. guilt and

  1234. condemnation, from

  1235. the certainty of

  1236. eternal separation

  1237. from God in

  1238. hell.

  1239. Freedom to

  1240. become a

  1241. child of God, to

  1242. enjoy life and

  1243. peace with God, to

  1244. have the hope of

  1245. eternity with God.

  1246. So faith brings

  1247. freedom and faith

  1248. brings family.

  1249. She's a daughter

  1250. of Abraham.

  1251. She's part of the

  1252. people of God.

  1253. And that's all,

  1254. again, because of

  1255. God's mercy to

  1256. us in sending

  1257. Jesus our

  1258. Saviour.

  1259. And so, as we

  1260. leave this story,

  1261. let's leave it in

  1262. that sense with a

1263. call to us as the

  1264. church.

  1265. If you belong to

  1266. Becluia, it's a

  1267. call to Becluia if

  1268. you're from another

  1269. church, that we

  1270. would be a place

  1271. of mercy for

  1272. those who are

  1273. suffering, for

  1274. those who are

  1275. needy, for those

  1276. who are lost and

  1277. helpless, and that

  1278. we would each play

  1279. our part in

  1280. extending that

  1281. mercy.

  1282. That we would

  1283. take heed of

  1284. the needs of

  1285. others and the

  1286. needs of one

  1287. another.

  1288. That we wouldn't

  1289. let laws and

  1290. traditions come

  1291. ahead of mercy

  1292. and showing

  1293. the love of

  1294. God to

  1295. others.

  1296. And that

  1297. positively we

  1298. would enjoy

  1299. what God's

  1300. day and what

  1301. God's word

  1302. calls us to.

  1303. To enjoy

  1304. rest.

  1305. Resting from

  1306. our work

  1307. whenever that's

  1308. possible and

  1309. resting in

  1310. Christ.

  1311. Not working

  1312. for our own

  1313. salvation but

  1314. recognising he

  1315. has accomplished

  1316. our salvation so

  1317. we're resting and

  1318. we're trusting in

  1319. him alone for

  1320. salvation.

  1321. that we would

  1322. enjoy that

  1323. rescue that we

  1324. have received.

  1325. That we would

  1326. celebrate the

  1327. gospel and that

  1328. we would share

  1329. the good news

  1330. that God has

  1331. loved us and

  1332. sent his son

  1333. Jesus to pay

  1334. the price and

  1335. the penalty for

  1336. our sin.

  1337. And that we

  1338. would rejoice.

  1339. That if we have

  1340. received mercy

  1341. that we would

  1342. praise him today

  1343. and every day.

  1344. That that would

  1345. be our story.

  1346. That would be the

  1347. tone of our

  1348. story that that's

  1349. what we would

  1350. be about as a

  1351. church.

  1352. What is it that

  1353. we're about as a

  1354. church?

  1355. What is it that

  1356. you do?

  1357. If someone asked

  1358. us that question

  1359. a P4 or anyone

  1360. else we'd be

  1361. about worship.

  1362. We'd be about

  1363. mercy.

  1364. We'd be about

  1365. enjoying God's

  1366. rescue.

  1367. God's kindness

  1368. and passing that

  1369. on to others.

  1370. Let's pray

  1371. about that

  1372. now.

  1373. Let's pray.

  1374. Lord,

  1375. thank you so

  1376. much for the

  1377. freedom that

  1378. Jesus came to

  1379. secure.

  1380. That he gave

  1381. his life on

  1382. the cross.

  1383. That we might

  1384. be set free.

  1385. Thank you that

  1386. Jesus, the

  1387. son of God,

  1388. loved us and

  1389. gave himself

  1390. for us.

  1391. That we might

  1392. become children

  1393. of God.

  1394. thank you that

  1395. we can rest in

  1396. knowing Jesus.

  1397. That we can

  1398. rest and take

  1399. our burdens to

  1400. Jesus.

  1401. Thank you that

  1402. we can receive

  1403. and enjoy

  1404. rescue,

  1405. redemption,

  1406. deliverance.

  1407. Lord, make us a

  1408. people who rejoice

  1409. in those realities.

  1410. and that we

  1411. would share that

  1412. mercy.

1413. That we would be a

  1414. place and a

  1415. people marked by

  1416. mercy towards

  1417. one another and

  1418. towards those who

  1419. are not part of

  1420. the church.

1421. We pray it for the

  1422. glory of Jesus,

  1423. our Saviour.

  1424. Amen.

  1425. Now, as we

  1426. close, we

  1427. will sing.

  1428. First of all,

  1429. Glorious Things of

  1430. Thee Are Spoken

  1431. and then the

  1432. first seven

  1433. verses of

  1434. Psalm 46.

  1435. Glorious Things of

  1436. Thee Are Spoken

  1437. Zion, city of our

  1438. God, He whose

  1439. word cannot be broken,

  1440. form thee for His

  1441. own abode.

  1442. On the rock of

  1443. ages founded,

  1444. what can shake

  1445. thy sure repose?

  1446. With salvation's

  1447. walls surrounded,

  1448. thou may smile at

  1449. all thy foes.

  1450. See the streams

  1451. of living waters,

  1452. springing from

  1453. eternal love.

  1454. Well, supply thy

  1455. sons and daughters,

  1456. and all fear of

  1457. want remove.

  1458. Who can faint while

  1459. such a river ever

  1460. flows?

  1461. Their thirst to

  1462. swage grace,

  1463. which, like the

  1464. Lord the Giver,

  1465. never fails from

  1466. age to age.

  1467. round each habitation

  1468. hovering, see the cloud

1469. and fire appear, for a glory

1470. and a covering, showing that the Lord is near.

1471. thus deriving from their banner,

1472. light by night and shade by day.

1473. safe they feed upon the manna,

1474. which He gives them when they pray.

1475. Savior of Zion's city, I, through grace,

1476. remember, I'll let the world

  1477. deride our pity.

1478. I will glory in thy name.

1479. Fading is the worldlings' pleasure,

1480. all his boasted palm-baths show,

1481. solid joys and lasting treasure,

1482. none but Zion's children know.

1483. God is our refuge and our strength,

  1484. our ever-present aid,

1485. and therefore, though the earth gives way,

1486. we will not be afraid.

1487. Though mountains fall into the sea,

1488. though waters foam and roar,

1489. we will not fear, though mountains quake,

1490. as waves engulf the shore.

1491. A river flows through streams delight

1492. the city of our God,

1493. the holy place in which the Lord

1494. most high has his abode.

1495. God is within his holy place,

1496. the city will not yield,

1497. for God will come at break of day

1498. to be her help and shield.

1499. The nations are in disarray,

  1500. the kingdoms disappear.

1501. God speaks, and at his mighty voice

1502. the whole earth melts with fear.

1503. The Lord Almighty is with us

  1504. to strengthen and sustain,

  1505. for Jacob's God,

1506. our strong defense and fortress

  1507. will remain.

  1508. God сказал,

  1509. shuk pen켓
