  1. Okay, before we pray, I would like to introduce today's guest speaker.

  2. We are very privileged to have a guest speaker with us today, Steve Murphy.

  3. And if you recognize the surname, we share the same surname, and that is because Steve

  4. happens to be my father.

  5. My dad is in town for business, and when I heard that he was coming through Hong Kong

  6. a few months ago, I said, we'd love to have you preach and open God's Word to us this

  7. morning.

  8. And so let me just tell you one or two things about my dad.

  9. Where should I start?

  10. I think that the enduring memory or probably the thing that sticks in my mind the most about

  11. my father is he is a man who, as long as I can remember, about 35 years or so, is someone

  12. who fears God and has loved His Word.

  13. From a very young age, I remember walking through the house in the early hours of the morning,

  14. and there was my dad on his knees before the scriptures in prayer.

  15. He's a man that fears God and loves His Word.

  16. And my dad's also been an outstanding husband to my mom for almost 40 years.

  17. And in addition to that, has been the greatest father that you could ever imagine.

  18. And I don't just say that.

  19. I genuinely mean that.

  20. And in addition to that, my dad is probably one of my very best friends.

  21. And dad, I love you so much, and it's a pity that we get to live so far away from each other.

  22. My dad's living in Cape Town with my mom at the moment, but it's wonderful to have you

  23. in Hong Kong.

  24. But I think there's one other thing that would be good for us to know is my dad, in

  25. some ways, has been involved in church leadership for much of his adult life.

  26. He's been an elder in many churches in many parts of the world, pastored a church in Vietnam

  27. for seven years, but has also been a businessman his whole life.

  28. And currently he's the CEO of a big reinsurance and financial services company in Africa.

  29. And so has managed to balance this thing of having a vibrant faith and serving the community

  30. and also a busy work life, which I know in Hong Kong is often very difficult for us, right?

  31. Work life in Hong Kong is very demanding.

  32. My dad is someone who's managed to manage that busy work life, serving in church, and

  33. also being a very faithful husband and father.

  34. And so dad, it really is a great privilege to have you sharing God's Word with us this morning.

  35. I'm looking forward to it.

  36. So on that note, let me pray for us, and then we're going to listen to the reading of God's

  37. Word, and then we will listen to the preaching.

  38. So let's, will you join me as we pray together this morning?

  39. Heavenly Father, great and glorious God, we come before you this morning to adore you and

  40. to praise your great name.

  41. Father, it is in worshiping you and ascribing honor and glory to your name that we align our

  42. hearts with what is true, and that we discover what it means to be fully human.

  43. And so it is our joy and our privilege to worship you today.

  44. Oh, great God, maker of heaven and earth, you who created the galaxies and the planets,

  45. stars and moons and further space, you who billions of years ago spoke into existence that

  46. which we have not even yet discovered.

  47. Father, we humble ourselves before you and we say that you are God and we are not.

  48. You are glorious and worthy of worship, and we do that joyfully this morning.

  49. How majestic is your name, oh God.

  50. How glorious are your ways.

  51. Father, this morning we acknowledge our brokenness to you and we confess our sin.

  52. God, we get angry and we hold grudges.

  53. We feel aggrieved when embarrassed.

  54. We feel sorry for ourselves when things don't go our way.

  55. And God, we are broken because we are sinners, and we confess this to you.

  56. We ask for your redeeming and your healing grace.

  57. Father, this morning we thank you that, Jesus, because of your cross, you have purchased our

  58. forgiveness.

  59. We ask, Father, that as we confess our sins to you, won't you apply that forgiveness to

  60. us, that we may walk in the freedom of renewed and joyful relationship with you.

  61. Father, cast our sin away from us.

  62. Wash us white as snow, we pray.

  63. God, this is our confidence.

  64. This is why we come before you, because of Jesus and his cross.

  65. Thank you, Jesus, for dying for us.

  66. Father, it's not just sinners out there, those people that need you.

  67. We need you.

  68. And we rejoice in that this morning.

  69. Father, this morning we also want to pray for the many parents in our congregation.

  70. We ask, God, that you come and you wash us with your love.

  71. God, deliver us from finding our identity and our validation in our children and their

  72. successes.

  73. God, we do ask that you give us the wisdom to raise our children as you'd want us to.

  74. Help us to shape and shepherd their hearts, not just their behavior.

  75. Lead us, God, to teach them the gospel, not just how to act Christianly.

  76. Give us, God, patience when parenting demands more of us than we feel we have to offer.

  77. Give us wisdom when we are out of our depth and don't know what to do.

  78. Give us peace, God, we pray, when we are overcome with worry and exceeding anxiety.

  79. And Father, we pray for the children of this community.

  80. Unborn children still in their mother's wombs.

  81. Infant children, young children, grown-up children, adult children.

  82. God, we ask that you work in the hearts of every child, of every family in this church, God.

  83. Whether such children know you and honor you or not, stir their hearts, God.

  84. Draw them back to you.

  85. Pour your love into their hearts.

  86. Open the eyes of their hearts that they may know what is the hope to which you've called

  87. them, we pray, God.

  88. Father, pour out your spirit on our children, God.

  89. Turn the hearts of the children back to their parents and to you, O God.

  90. O Lord, we are desperate that our children know you and serve you and find their hope in

  91. you and rest in you.

  92. Come and move in our city, God, and start with our families, we pray.

  93. Come and do this, God.

  94. Lord, we and our children need you, God, more than anything else.

  95. Come and move, we pray, God.

  96. Hear our prayers, Lord.

  97. And finally, Father, we want to pray for our city.

  98. And God, this morning, we want to bring Island ECC, the wonderful church, before you.

  99. God, we do pray that your God will move powerfully in that church, such that they will ever grow

  100. in their love for your gospel and their confidence in your word.

  101. We pray, Jesus, that you will be exceedingly big in the hearts of every member and all

  102. that they do.

  103. God, that the honor of Christ in your name will permeate every meeting and every agenda.

  104. Lord, this morning, we pray for Brett and Shannon and Rick Bates and their families.

  105. We pray for their team.

  106. Thank you for their passion for ministry.

  107. Thank you for their kindness towards all the churches in Hong Kong.

  108. We pray that they will continue to grow in the fear of the Lord, in love for your word,

  109. in confidence in the gospel, and in favor with God and man.

  110. We pray this in your forgiving, reassuring, and steadfast name.

  111. Amen.

  112. Amen.

  113. Let's listen to the reading of God's word, and then we'll listen to the preaching.

  114. The scripture reading comes from Nehemiah chapter 1.

    Nehemiah 1 chapter mention

  115. Please follow along in your bulletins or on the screen.

  116. The words of Nehemiah, the son of Hecaliah.

  117. Now it happened in a month of cheese leaf, in the 20th year, as I was in Susa, the citadel,

  118. that Halani, one of my brothers, came with certain men from Judah, and asked them concerning

  119. the Jews who escaped, who had survived the exile, and concerning Jerusalem.

  120. Now they said to me, the remnant there in the prophets who had survived the exile is in

  121. great trouble and shame.

  122. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates are destroyed by fire.

  123. As soon as I heard these words, I sat down, and wept, and mourned for days.

  124. And I continued fasting and praying before the God of heaven.

  125. And I said, O Lord God of heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps covenant and steadfast

  126. love with those who love him and keep his commandments, let your ear be attentive and your eyes open

  127. to hear the prayer of your servant that I now pray before you day and night for the people

  128. of Israel your servants, confessing the sins of the people of Israel, which we have sinned

  129. against you.

  130. Even I and my father's house have sinned.

  131. We have acted very corruptedly against you and have not kept commandments, the statutes,

  132. and the rules that you commanded your servant Moses.

  133. Remember the words that you commanded your servant Moses, saying, If you are unfaithful, I will

  134. scatter you among the peoples.

  135. But if you return to me and keep my commandments and do them, though your outcasts are in the

  136. utmost parts of heaven, from there I will gather them and bring them to the place that I have

  137. chosen to make my name through there.

  138. They are your servants and your people, whom you have redeemed by your great power and by

  139. your strong hand.

  140. O Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant and to the prayer of your servants

  141. who delight to fear your name and give success to your servant today.

  142. And grant him mercy in the sight of this man.

  143. Now I was cut barrier to the king.

  144. This is the word of God.

  145. Well, good morning to you all.

  146. It's a delight to be with you.

  147. Thanks, son, for those wonderful words.

  148. Jenny and I have a bittersweet kind of experience when we think of Watermark.

  149. Sweet because Kevin and Claire are here and because you have been so gracious in extending

  150. a call to them.

  151. Bitter because we went back to Cape Town to be with them.

  152. And as we had been there four weeks, then they came here.

  153. So there's a kind of, we love Watermark.

  154. We pray for you.

  155. We think of you muchly.

  156. But on the other hand, we wish they were back in Cape Town.

  157. But as we console ourselves, we find the satisfaction that we would rather our children be in the

  158. uttermost parts of the earth, serving the purposes of God, rather than be making us comfortable

  159. in our own home nest.

  160. And there is a much greater sense of security and delight and great confidence in knowing

  161. that your children, wherever they are, are in God's purposes rather than having them close by

  162. and maybe being missing the real heart of what God intends for them.

  163. You do have a wonderful couple in Kevin and Claire.

  164. I don't say that unbiasedly.

  165. But you have in Kevin and Claire people who love God, love his word, and who know how to

  166. pray.

  167. The Lord gave us three promises concerning our three sons and that which spoke of Kevin was

  168. he was a man of prayer.

  169. And so you have a pastor who prays and a pastor who believes in prayer and turns to God when

  170. he's uncertain on anything and everything.

  171. But you haven't come to hear me talk about my son.

  172. In 586, when Nebuchadnezzar left Jerusalem, he left a once proud city that had been, as it

  173. were, the center of the known world.

  174. Until then, under King David, it had been the capital city of the region.

  175. And then under King Solomon, who had built his own palace and built the temple, had built

  176. two enormous structures that spoke of enormous wealth, of enormous ingenuity, and spoke of

  177. the favor of God upon that city.

  178. Nebuchadnezzar, in 586, when he left it, left it ransacked, broken, and in ruins.

  179. The great walls, which had spoken of its stature, lay burnt and destroyed.

  180. The gates were no longer serving any purpose whatsoever.

  181. And the temple itself had been ransacked.

  182. That magnificent building, into which so much wealth had been poured in its construction,

  183. was now just a collection of ruins.

  184. And it's helpful to understand the situation, because, so we can see the context.

  185. And so, the kingdom under David, and then followed by Solomon, split after Solomon.

  186. When he died, the northern tribes, ten of the northern tribes, split into what was Israel,

  187. and Judah and Benjamin became, as it were, named after Judah, with the southern kingdom.

  188. And because they had neglected God, because they had kind of treasured their relationship

  189. socially and kind of religiously, but had lost the essence of what relationship with the

  190. father was, and had drifted off into pagan worship and worshiping of idols, God sent the

  191. nations and punished them, Israel first.

  192. And then some hundred years later, Nebuchadnezzar came and ransacked the city, and it was destroyed.

  193. And of course, what we must understand is that Israel came into being as a nation

  194. when that enormous night in Egypt, the angel of death passed over every home,

  195. and that which carried the bloodstain of a cross upon the lintels of every door,

  196. the angel of death passed over, then some 600,000 men and women, plus men, plus women and children

  197. left Egypt.

  198. And then, in the 40 years that followed, God fashioned this disparate group of people into

  199. a nation.

  200. And he chose them as a nation so that through them, he could reveal himself as the God who

  201. wants to commune and engage with men and women.

  202. And the Jewish people, through the laws and the precepts and the principles and decrees

  203. of the father, became a distinct community, because God revealed his heart and his character,

  204. and they, assimilating those, they became distinctive.

  205. And in a sense, God chose them to show to the nations what he will do with the people who

  206. will honor and serve him.

  207. Of course, they didn't do that very well.

  208. And now here, and that word that's used here as we look at the prayer of Nehemiah, as he

  209. starts to say, O Lord God, the great and awesome God, that word Lord is the Hebrew word for

  210. the God who rescues, the God who redeems, the God who takes out.

  211. And its root is found in that night in Egypt when God redeemed by the blood of the Lamb a

  212. people to himself.

  213. And so Nehemiah, as he starts to pray this magnificent prayer, roots his approach to God

  214. in the character of the one who redeems, who heals, who takes what is broken, who takes

  215. what's enslaved, who takes what is powerless to free themselves, and his address is, you

  216. who are the redeemer, you who are the rescuer, I am making my approach to you.

  217. And friends, this morning, we must never lose sight of the redemptive nature, the restorative

  218. nature of our God and what he has done through Jesus Christ.

  219. He is the one who redeems.

  220. He is the one who restores.

  221. He is the one that takes what's broken and makes it whole again.

  222. We are, and Nehemiah roots his prayer, O Lord God, you who have that night in Egypt taken

  223. a people out to make whole again.

  224. I'm coming before you this time in Susa.

  225. I've heard of the destruction of my city.

  226. I've heard of its vulnerability.

  227. I've heard of its desperate state, both physically, socially, politically, spiritually.

  228. And my appeal is to you, on the basis of what you've done in history, God come and restore.

  229. Friends, this morning, we must be reminded that we serve and know a God who has revealed

  230. himself through Jesus as the one who restores, as the one who makes whole.

  231. Paul wrote so powerfully, it's one of my favorite verses, that he's not ashamed of the gospel.

  232. Why?

  233. Because it's the power of God unto salvation.

  234. Now, of course, when we think of that, we can think of it in very small terms of, you

  235. know, it's the kind of salvation we put our hand up and God saves us.

  236. Paul's not talking about a decision and a hand in a meeting.

  237. Paul's talking about the salvation which is able to take a man or a woman or a family or

  238. situation in desperate need.

  239. And God, through the power of the good news of Jesus, is able to redeem and to change and

  240. to transform and save and restore and make whole.

  241. That's the story of the gospel.

  242. That's why he wasn't ashamed.

  243. And friends, the glory of the gospel, the glory of the person of Jesus, is there is no situation.

  244. There is nothing that's so desperate that the love of God through Christ Jesus and the dunamis,

  245. the power of the gospel, isn't able to change and to transform.

  246. These are not intellectual theological doctrines only, though they are.

  247. But this should be the kind of living energy that guides and drives us.

  248. That I'm living under the reign and the authority of one whose power is able to destroy the work of the evil one.

  249. That all the chains he might put upon me, the gospel, is able to do things differently.

  250. So in looking at Nehemiah, we're looking at how God was concerned for his people.

  251. And of course, Nehemiah represents probably one of the greatest illustrations of building in Scripture.

  252. He goes to a city that's distraught, that's broken, that's destitute.

  253. And in 52 days, he restores its walls, he hangs its gates, and something of the security of the city is returned.

  254. But of course, Nehemiah is not just a great builder of a city and restoring a Jerusalem that had been ransacked.

  255. He is a prototype of a much greater builder who was still to come.

  256. He is a prototype.

  257. He's a prefigurement of the one who would walk through not the broken walls of bricks and stones and gates hanging limp,

  258. but would walk through the broken walls of individual men and women's lives whose gates and whose heads hang down with shame and guilt and inadequacy

  259. and touch them and begin to restore them and build a living temple out of burnt and disused stones that this world says are not sufficient.

  260. And Christ is able to restore the glory of himself and his person in our own hearts and in our own lives.

  261. This is what we really must look for when we're looking at Nehemiah.

  262. Now, there are three things I just want to highlight out of this magnificent passage.

  263. I want us to see that there is the first thing about his prayer.

  264. O Lord God of heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps covenant and steadfast love.

  265. God, the one that we serve, is consistently preserver of what he said he would do.

  266. The words of David as he was passing on, leaving the words to his son Solomon,

  267. he said that all that the Lord has spoken he has fulfilled with his hands.

  268. We have a God who doesn't just speak.

  269. We have a God who delivers and performs that which he said he would do.

  270. Friends, are we possessed with this conviction?

  271. Do we understand that this church and serving God and loving him isn't a kind of religious exercise?

  272. It's an experience with the divine.

  273. That he who speaks a word into our hearts is the one who fulfills it.

  274. I remember years ago when I was in business, I'd heard a sermon of a man who preached and he said,

  275. The problem with us as Christians is we trust God for such small things.

  276. He said we trust him for houses, for promotion, for big cars and bigger jobs.

  277. He said these things are so small because God in the Psalms promised us,

  278. Ask and call unto me and I'll give you the nations.

  279. Now, let me ask you, how big is your dream?

  280. How big are you trusting God?

  281. How big are you trusting God?

  282. And I remember this kind of echoed in my mind, in my mind.

  283. And I was at lunchtime.

  284. I can still see myself.

  285. I got down next to the couch in my office and I said,

  286. God, I want you to send me to a nation where our church movement is not part of.

  287. We've never been there.

  288. And give me the chance to do something for you there.

  289. Fifteen years later, fifteen years later, I'd forgotten the prayer.

  290. And we were pastoring a church in Vietnam.

  291. A funny, unqualified man from South Africa in a communist nation leading a church.

  292. God fulfills with his words, with his hands, what he promises with his mouth.

  293. And so Nehemiah approaches God with this wonderful,

  294. Oh Lord God, the one who redeems, the one who saves, the one who sets free.

  295. And he knew there's a sense, there's a language of conviction,

  296. there's a language of intent, there's a language of expectation.

  297. This is not poetry.

  298. This is the burning urge and sense and conviction from his heart.

  299. Oh Lord God, the great and awesome God.

  300. He knew and understood that he was coming into the presence of one who was almighty.

  301. The awesome God, the one who inspires all.

  302. A sense of wonder.

  303. You see, Nehemiah rooted his appeal for all that was to follow in the sovereign authority,

  304. the omnipresent, where God is always.

  305. The omniscience, or the all-knowing God.

  306. And the omnipotence, the all-powerful God.

  307. He understood something of whom God was.

  308. Jehoshaphat, when he was faced with the armies of the Moabites and the Ammonites,

  309. roots his appeal for help in the character of God when he says this.

  310. Friends, when we come to pray, do we come with the sense of assurance?

  311. Are you not God?

  312. Are you not in heaven?

  313. And no one, no one can withstand your power.

  314. Do we understand the great privilege that we have as believers to come before him and to seek after him?

  315. And much in modern preaching has, in a sense, diluted who God is.

  316. And when we pray, we must always keep this transcendent understanding that God is God from infinity in the beginning to infinity in the end.

  317. That's a contradiction in terms, I understand that.

  318. But I'm trying to just say, he is God over everything, everywhere, over all things.

  319. You know, we sometimes think, well, no one will see it.

  320. God's seen it.

  321. He even knew our hearts before we began to enact that which was wrong or that which was good.

  322. He sees and knows everything.

  323. And what an awesome privilege.

  324. And this is the conviction that gripped Nehemiah when he comes before the Father.

  325. Are you not?

  326. You see, when we dilute who God is, we've kind of, much in modern Christianity is focusing on the love of God, the goodness of God, which is absolutely wonderful and absolutely correct.

  327. But we need to keep these things in tension.

  328. God is gracious and merciful and profound and patient beyond anything we ever understood and can understand.

  329. God is also the awesome, holy, authoritative force person that governs the universe.

  330. And we need to understand that the love of God and the sovereignty of God and the authority of God are in holy tension.

  331. And it's not one or the other.

  332. God is God completely.

  333. And we need to revere him.

  334. And the manifestation of that was in Calvary.

  335. The great love of God being poured out and at the same time the great judgment being poured out and despicably and scandalously and tragically experienced by his son, the Lord Jesus Christ.

  336. We've lost the wonder and the majesty of him who's spoken to the darkness and light came.

  337. Who's spoken to that which was dead and life emerged.

  338. We've spoken to the confusion and order began to unfold.

  339. We've forgotten the glory of the one who created all things.

  340. And so I want to suggest his conviction was rooted in an understanding of the awesomeness of the Lord.

  341. The awesomeness of our God.

  342. Who is able to make lots, everything out of nothing.

  343. Before whom the nations are counted as dust upon the scales.

  344. Whose value and significance is but a drop in the bucket.

  345. Who gives life to the dead and calls into things that do not exist as though they did.

  346. He puts to death and he brings to life.

  347. He wounds and he heals.

  348. He calls the stars by name and the vastness of the universe with stars beyond anything modern telescopes have even begun to consider.

  349. He knows them all.

  350. He supervises and plots the connectivity of every single cell.

  351. Billions of them in the human embryo.

  352. As it's getting ready to birth a new child, male or female.

  353. And whose steadfast love and affection endure forever and forever.

  354. Who hears the faintest cry and who responds.

  355. And who responds to the meekest approach at repentance.

  356. This is the awesome God whom Nehemiah came before and of whom we must never lose sight.

  357. He is God.

  358. He is God.

  359. The great almighty God.

  360. As the Lord said, I am the Lord and there is no other.

  361. And how dare we presume that there be any other.

  362. As Isaiah said, he is the potter and we are the clay.

  363. He takes Peter, the man who denies him.

  364. Three times.

  365. And then what does he use Peter to do?

  366. He uses Peter to write an epistle and he uses these magnificent words.

  367. Peter writes to the church and he says,

  368. Think about it.

  369. The person who denied him is the instrument and the very one Jesus through the Holy Spirit uses to pen forever and ever encouragement to the church.

  370. To be ready to give a hope for the reason for the hope that is within you.

  371. That had been me, I would say, you're the last person to qualify.

  372. You denied me.

  373. No, I can't use you again.

  374. But God in his grace takes the one who failed and he uses him.

  375. You know that James and John, the sons of thunder.

  376. Now go read John's epistles.

  377. Letters.

  378. Full of the love of God.

  379. The patience of God.

  380. He is the one who restores.

  381. He is the one who redeems.

  382. He is the one who sets free.

  383. He is the one who means that we needn't be defined by what we were.

  384. We can be defined by what the gospel will make us.

  385. Friends, have we lost sight of the awesomeness of the one before whom we come to pray?

  386. Have we lost perspective of whom it is?

  387. The heavens declare the glory of God and the earth reminds us.

  388. Show us his handiwork, who he is.

  389. We need to sometimes pause and just look at what God has done and created and placed around us

  390. to begin again to remind ourselves of the one before whom we come to worship.

  391. We're so caught up with our technology, so caught up with the images of videos and TVs and movies

  392. that we've lost the movie that really speaks life into our hearts and into our souls.

  393. The movie of the heavens and the wonder of creation.

  394. Let me ask you, how is your prayer time?

  395. Is it boring?

  396. Is it routine?

  397. Is it an exercise I've just got to get through?

  398. Clem Sunter was a leading senior person in the mining industry in South Africa.

  399. In the late 1980s, early 90s, there was a dreadful mining accident,

  400. which really was a result of negligence and shortcuts in the mines,

  401. which 189 miners were killed.

  402. And it shook him.

  403. He was actually chief executive at that stage.

  404. It shook him so much that he actually asked to be relieved of that position,

  405. and he worked elsewhere in the group.

  406. And he developed a skill in scenario planning.

  407. It's not strategic planning.

  408. It's kind of trying to look at the scenarios in the future,

  409. and if this scenario works out, what do we do?

  410. And if this scenario works out, it's a different discipline,

  411. and it's kind of trying to see what happens in the future.

  412. And he became very good at it.

  413. And I was listening to him last year.

  414. He was talking at a conference I was at,

  415. and he shared a moment.

  416. He said one of the highlights of his life was in the last five years,

  417. as he had been invited by the Chinese Politburo to address them

  418. on scenario planning in Beijing.

  419. And he talks of how he was ushered into the Great Hall,

  420. and there they all were.

  421. And he was spending three days with them on scenario planning,

  422. economic and political possibilities,

  423. over the next five to ten years.

  424. And as I thought about it over the next two days,

  425. I thought, sure, isn't this amazing privilege

  426. to be able to address powerful men and women and government

  427. and the leading nations of the earth

  428. to speak about the future.

  429. And as I was reflecting on it,

  430. I just felt God just kind of say,

  431. Stephen,

  432. you get a greater privilege every morning

  433. when you come before me in prayer.

  434. You get the privilege to speak to the creator

  435. of all the universe,

  436. the one who is God,

  437. who works and no one can prohibit it,

  438. who says, and that's it.

  439. You get the opportunity through my son

  440. and with the help of the Holy Spirit

  441. to come and beseech and to speak to me,

  442. not to consider scenarios,

  443. but to make appeals before me

  444. on things that need to be changed.

  445. in you and your communities

  446. and in the earth.

  447. Friends,

  448. there is nothing that shapes you,

  449. your life,

  450. more than anything

  451. like prayer.

  452. You might have been taught it's your education,

  453. you might be taught it's your bank balance,

  454. you might have been encouraged,

  455. it's a thousand other things,

  456. but that which most shapes your life,

  457. that which will most shape it for the future,

  458. is the way you engage and trust God

  459. and spend time with Him

  460. on your knees

  461. and seeking after Him.

  462. Nothing will shape you

  463. more than your time in prayer.

  464. Nothing will shape you for good

  465. and for righteousness

  466. more than your time in prayer.

  467. And that's the thing

  468. that we probably

  469. give the least attention to.

  470. And we are the ones

  471. who are most bereft

  472. and suffer most

  473. because of it.

  474. James says,

  475. Do you understand that?

  476. He was drawing his parallel,

  477. the prophet Elijah,

  478. and how he prayed

  479. and it didn't rain.

  480. Three and a half years

  481. and then he prayed

  482. and it started again.

  483. The fervent, effectual prayer

  484. of men and women

  485. who trust and seek after Him

  486. can change the city of Hong Kong.

  487. If that can change nations,

  488. God through a community of people

  489. who will trust Him

  490. can bring more

  491. than we ever dreamt possible.

  492. Do we come before Him

  493. as the great and mighty,

  494. awesome God?

  495. Do we address Him

  496. as the one who is able

  497. to redeem and to restore?

  498. Or do we see it as a duty

  499. that we must get by and finish?

  500. And so,

  501. I was listening

  502. two or three weeks ago

  503. to a man talking about

  504. attending a prayer meeting

  505. in our African,

  506. I guess townships

  507. is the way still to describe them,

  508. that they're poorer areas

  509. where under the old apartheid system,

  510. African people were confined to live.

  511. And you don't just undo those things.

  512. There's still many communities like that.

  513. And this European white pastor

  514. was asking his counterpart,

  515. pastor from that area,

  516. an African man,

  517. saying,

  518. when I come to your prayer meetings

  519. in the townships,

  520. I'm always struck

  521. by this profound sense of energy

  522. and enthusiasm and conviction.

  523. He said,

  524. even in the most fervent white prayer meetings,

  525. there's nothing that approximates

  526. what you focus,

  527. what I sense and experience

  528. amongst your people.

  529. Have you got any explanation for it?

  530. The answer was tragically profound.

  531. He said,

  532. in the white communities,

  533. he says,

  534. you have so much

  535. that you,

  536. when you pray,

  537. you're praying to God

  538. as your last resort.

  539. But for us,

  540. in the townships,

  541. we have nothing.

  542. And so we turn to God

  543. for everything

  544. and anything that happens

  545. or goes wrong

  546. or might happen

  547. because we are solely

  548. and completely dependent upon him

  549. and we have a history of him

  550. answering our prayers

  551. and working in us

  552. that we come with a sense

  553. of profound conviction.

  554. And Jesus said,

  555. how hard it is

  556. for a rich man

  557. to enter the kingdom

  558. and I think he was

  559. not just meaning it

  560. from a salvation perspective

  561. but he was also

  562. meaning it

  563. because

  564. we don't feel

  565. the need of him.

  566. The second thing is,

  567. so he approaches God

  568. with a sense of conviction

  569. and awesomeness

  570. and power.

  571. The second thing he deals with,

  572. he deals with his sin.

  573. He's very emphatic about it.

  574. Sin is an unpopular

  575. word nowadays.

  576. Has been for a long time.

  577. But what we fail to grasp

  578. is that sin,

  579. all sin

  580. and foremost

  581. is sin against God.

  582. Before we sin

  583. on the horizontal levels

  584. with one another,

  585. before we disappoint each other,

  586. before we failed each other,

  587. we have already sinned

  588. on the vertical level.

  589. Sin by definition,

  590. the word hamate,

  591. is not wrongdoing

  592. another person

  593. so much as it is

  594. assaulting

  595. the glory of God.

  596. Sin is primarily

  597. an assault

  598. on our vertical relationship

  599. and refusing

  600. to honor him

  601. for whom we were made

  602. and for whose glory

  603. we,

  604. and whose glory

  605. we should be reflecting.

  606. See,

  607. all relationships

  608. on the horizontal

  609. are the consequences

  610. of sin

  611. on the vertical.

  612. and all man's solutions

  613. at trying to fix

  614. the horizontal,

  615. if they ignore

  616. the vertical,

  617. are doomed to failure.

  618. You know,

  619. we find all

  620. sound explanations

  621. if we had

  622. better economic situations,

  623. if people were

  624. better educated,

  625. if people were

  626. better trained,

  627. if people had

  628. better this,

  629. better that.

  630. And those things

  631. are not wrong.

  632. Don't get me wrong.

  633. Those are good.

  634. We should pursue them.

  635. But if we pursue them

  636. exclusively

  637. forgetting that

  638. our hearts

  639. are broken,

  640. that our lives

  641. are broken,

  642. that the relationship

  643. with the Father

  644. has been broken,

  645. then these things

  646. in and of themselves

  647. will never be successful.

  648. And especially

  649. for nations

  650. that put so much weight

  651. around the issue

  652. of education

  653. and training,

  654. let me remind you

  655. that Germany

  656. was the most educated

  657. nation in Europe

  658. in 1938.

  659. Just made them

  660. a very well educated

  661. army in 1939.

  662. You see,

  663. the head

  664. full of knowledge

  665. doesn't transform

  666. the heart

  667. which has a tendency

  668. and bias

  669. towards sin.

  670. What we need

  671. is both the head

  672. and the heart

  673. to be transformed

  674. and changed

  675. altogether.

  676. The most effective

  677. antidote to sin

  678. is to see

  679. the glory

  680. and the awesomeness

  681. of God.

  682. Because when we've

  683. seen that,

  684. then we cry out

  685. with Isaiah,

  686. I am a man

  687. of unclean lips.

  688. Holy,

  689. holy,

  690. holy.

  691. Sin is really

  692. setting aside

  693. the awesome authority

  694. of God

  695. and his power

  696. and his ways

  697. and his precepts

  698. to say,

  699. I choose

  700. another way,

  701. a more convenient

  702. and easier,

  703. a less humiliating,

  704. a more comfortable

  705. way

  706. or just avoiding

  707. things altogether.

  708. The world sees sin

  709. in a much more

  710. diluted fashion.

  711. Sin is a kind

  712. of behavioral issue,

  713. you know.

  714. You hurt me

  715. and you shouldn't

  716. do that.

  717. It's not right.

  718. It's not good.

  719. And sin is far,

  720. far more serious

  721. than that.

  722. It's an assault

  723. upon what God

  724. has said

  725. and what God

  726. requires

  727. of us

  728. and his people.

  729. To injure

  730. our fellow men

  731. is sin.

  732. Not because

  733. it hurts them

  734. but because

  735. it's violating

  736. the love of God

  737. has for all people.

  738. You see,

  739. in Isaiah,

  740. in Psalm 51,

  741. David's great

  742. prayer of repentance

  743. where he cries out,

  744. I'm a man,

  745. creating me

  746. a clean heart

  747. and renew

  748. a right spirit

  749. within me.

  750. He makes this

  751. statement in verse 4.

  752. He says,

  753. Against thee,

  754. and this is his

  755. prayer of confession

  756. concerning Bathsheba

  757. and Uriah.

  758. Bathsheba is committed

  759. adultery with Uriah.

  760. He had murdered

  761. and he says,

  762. Against thee

  763. and only thee

  764. have I done

  765. what is evil.

  766. Didn't mean

  767. that it didn't matter

  768. what he did

  769. to Bathsheba

  770. or Uriah.

  771. He goes on

  772. to confess that

  773. but he recognizes

  774. that the primary sin

  775. was that he sinned

  776. against God

  777. and his failing

  778. to trust God

  779. to honor purity,

  780. his failing

  781. to try

  782. to manipulate

  783. and preserve

  784. his own name

  785. from being found

  786. out against God

  787. is what resulted

  788. in the murder

  789. and the adultery

  790. with Bathsheba.

  791. And Nathan's

  792. challenge to him

  793. was,

  794. Why have you

  795. despised

  796. the word

  797. of the Lord?

  798. See,

  799. all sin

  800. comes from

  801. when we

  802. originally

  803. despised God's word,

  804. his precepts

  805. or his statutes

  806. or his rules

  807. or his ordinances

  808. because sometimes

  809. they're inconvenient,

  810. sometimes they're humiliating,

  811. sometimes they're awkward,

  812. sometimes they make us

  813. feel vulnerable.

  814. But in that

  815. is where our security lies

  816. because God honors us

  817. when we respond to him

  818. and when we do things

  819. his way.

  820. Let me say this,

  821. if you will not face

  822. your sin before God

  823. and deal with it

  824. at the cross of Christ,

  825. you cannot,

  826. and if we cannot make

  827. confession before him,

  828. you will never make

  829. confession before people.

  830. If we cannot face

  831. our weaknesses

  832. and our inadequacies

  833. before Calvary,

  834. you'll never face sin

  835. anywhere else

  836. and cope with it.

  837. It will always

  838. hound you,

  839. it will always

  840. intimidate you

  841. and ultimately

  842. it will always,

  843. always pay its wages

  844. which is death.

  845. Death of relationship,

  846. death of reputation,

  847. death of standing,

  848. death of honor,

  849. death of all the things

  850. that we pursued,

  851. sin comes and pays

  852. its wages.

  853. Sin also

  854. always results

  855. in scattering

  856. because this,

  857. Nehemiah prays,

  858. he says,

  859. he reminds God

  860. of the promise

  861. that he gave to Moses.

  862. He said,

  863. if we didn't obey you,

  864. he promised to scatter us.

  865. Let me say this,

  866. skin,

  867. sin always scatters.

  868. It always creates division.

  869. It always creates separation.

  870. It always destroys.

  871. Sin never builds up.

  872. It never unites.

  873. It never gathers together.

  874. It never creates.

  875. It always breaks down

  876. and destroys.

  877. And you,

  878. we might be deluded

  879. at times to think,

  880. oh,

  881. we can just get away.

  882. We'll paper it over.

  883. Sin will always expose

  884. the cracks

  885. at an inconvenient time later.

  886. The evil one

  887. is intent

  888. on destroying

  889. and devouring

  890. and breaking down.

  891. That is his intention.

  892. Right from Eden,

  893. when Adam and Eve

  894. were expelled,

  895. the garden,

  896. sin has been scattering

  897. and separating

  898. and dividing

  899. all the time.

  900. And the antidote

  901. is to come

  902. and face our sin

  903. at the cross of Christ

  904. and allow him

  905. to deal with it

  906. and allow him

  907. to forgive us.

  908. Then we find energy

  909. and strength

  910. to face

  911. is practical

  912. outworking

  913. in the ordinary

  914. events of life.

  915. And as I wrap up,

  916. the third point

  917. he comes to,

  918. he says,

  919. if you return,

  920. if you return.

  921. Remember the word

  922. you commanded

  923. your servant Moses

  924. saying,

  925. and then he talks about,

  926. but if you return

  927. to me

  928. and keep my commandments,

  929. if you return,

  930. if you return.

  931. This is not

  932. the language

  933. of effort

  934. or legalism.

  935. This is like

  936. preserving

  937. and keeping,

  938. treasuring.

  939. If you treasure,

  940. if you keep,

  941. there are notes

  942. like all of us

  943. have from our children

  944. when they were young.

  945. We have ours

  946. from Simon

  947. and Kevin

  948. and Drew,

  949. the little scribbled

  950. notes that they wrote,

  951. their first attempts

  952. at writing.

  953. We've kept those things.

  954. We've treasured them.

  955. They're valuable to us.

  956. They remind us of

  957. years long ago

  958. of innocence.

  959. They are valuable.

  960. And in a sense,

  961. Nehemiah,

  962. that's what God

  963. is saying.

  964. If you keep,

  965. if you treasure,

  966. if you long for,

  967. if you hold on to

  968. me and my precepts

  969. and my ways,

  970. if you do that,

  971. wherever you have

  972. been scattered,

  973. wherever you have

  974. gone,

  975. even as if to the

  976. uttermost part of heaven,

  977. from there I will

  978. gather you,

  979. I will draw you.

  980. And it's the same

  981. words Jesus,

  982. in a sense,

  983. repeated,

  984. the same motion,

  985. the same conviction.

  986. Oh Jerusalem,

  987. Jerusalem,

  988. how I long to have

  989. gathered you as a hen

  990. gathers her chicks.

  991. This is the language

  992. of passion and compassion.

  993. This is the language

  994. of restoration.

  995. This is the language

  996. of longing for being

  997. reunited and drawn

  998. together.

  999. How I long to

  1000. restore you.

  1001. It's the language

  1002. of extravagance.

  1003. It's the language

  1004. of abundance.

  1005. It's the language

  1006. of unmitigated

  1007. mercy and grace.

  1008. Wherever you are,

  1009. if you want to

  1010. return,

  1011. I'm going to be

  1012. there to draw you

  1013. much more.

  1014. You don't have to

  1015. get back on your

  1016. own terms.

  1017. You don't have to

  1018. fight your way back.

  1019. Just indicate you

  1020. want to come back

  1021. and I will draw,

  1022. I will gather.

  1023. All God wants

1024. is the cry of a

  1025. heart,

  1026. God be merciful.

  1027. And he does the

  1028. rest of drawing us

  1029. to him spells,

  1030. to himself.

  1031. Irrespective of

  1032. where you are,

  1033. to where you have

  1034. been gathered,

  1035. to where you have

  1036. been scattered,

  1037. irrespective of what

  1038. sin might have done

  1039. in the lives past,

  1040. God is able through

  1041. Christ Jesus to do

  1042. significantly and

  1043. abundantly more.

  1044. Paul captured it

  1045. beautifully, didn't he,

1046. in his letter to the

  1047. Romans, that where

  1048. sin has abounded,

  1049. grace has much,

  1050. much more

  1051. abounded.

1052. I just want to say

  1053. there is not a

  1054. desperate situation

  1055. in this community

  1056. or in any community

  1057. in Hong Kong

  1058. that the gospel

  1059. is not able

  1060. to deal with.

  1061. There's not a

  1062. single situation

  1063. that the cross

  1064. is not able

  1065. to overcome.

  1066. Sometimes things

  1067. do go wrong,

  1068. sometimes we are

  1069. perplexed,

  1070. sometimes we are

  1071. devastated,

  1072. sometimes we don't

  1073. understand,

  1074. but the cross

  1075. always allows us

  1076. to triumph

  1077. because God is

  1078. sovereign and he

  1079. knows everything.

  1080. The earth has no

  1081. song that heaven

  1082. cannot heal.

  1083. We sang those words

  1084. beautifully this

  1085. morning.

  1086. The earth has no

  1087. sorrow that heaven

  1088. cannot heal.

  1089. And folks,

  1090. let me just

  1091. encourage you.

  1092. It shouldn't just

1093. be the words of a

  1094. song that should

  1095. be the deep,

  1096. deep drive

  1097. that governs

  1098. our behavior,

  1099. our going out

  1100. and our coming

  1101. in.

  1102. There's no sorrow,

  1103. there's no awkwardness,

  1104. there's nothing,

1105. no news that I can

  1106. hear today that

  1107. heaven cannot heal.

  1108. Yes, we will feel

  1109. pain, yes, we may

  1110. feel confusion,

  1111. yes, we may be

  1112. terrified, may we

  1113. be fearful, but God,

  1114. I know this, that

  1115. irrespective of what

  1116. my emotions are doing

1117. to me, I know that

  1118. the song of heaven

  1119. is able to heal

  1120. the pain that

  1121. earth might

  1122. deliver.

  1123. And that is why

  1124. we're not ashamed

  1125. of the gospel.

  1126. It's the power

  1127. of God.

  1128. Nehemiah's prayer

  1129. is about reminding

  1130. God of

  1131. God's word

  1132. and praying it

  1133. back to him,

  1134. God's promises.

  1135. The promises that

  1136. he would, and

  1137. now listen to this,

  1138. the promise was

  1139. that if you repent,

  1140. I will gather you

  1141. to the place where

  1142. I've made my name

  1143. dwell.

  1144. At the risk of

  1145. being a little bit

  1146. irreverent, think

  1147. about it.

  1148. You're scattered to

  1149. all parts of the

  1150. earth, you've been

  1151. destitute, you've been

  1152. robbed of everything

  1153. you have, you're

  1154. beggars, you're

  1155. forlorn, you've got

  1156. nothing.

  1157. And the promises, if

  1158. you repent, I'll bring

1159. you back to the place

  1160. where my name dwells.

  1161. Well, if you're a

  1162. cynic, you say, what

  1163. good is that?

  1164. But actually, all of

1165. life, and all of our

  1166. humanity, and all of

  1167. our personhood, finds

  1168. its significance, and

  1169. finds its life, and

  1170. finds its beginning at

  1171. the centrality of the

  1172. cross, and at the

  1173. beginning of the name

  1174. of the Lord Jesus

  1175. Christ.

  1176. God gathers us to

  1177. himself, because in

  1178. himself is where we

  1179. find life, and where

  1180. we find meaning, and

  1181. where we find

  1182. encouragement, and

  1183. where we find

  1184. strength.

  1185. If we're going to

  1186. try and find it

  1187. anywhere else, we

  1188. will ultimately always

  1189. be disillusioned.

  1190. We will always be

  1191. disappointed.

  1192. We may be excited

  1193. for a season, but

  1194. sure, as eggs are

  1195. eggs, as time passes

1196. by, we will begin to

  1197. become disillusioned.

1198. But when we find our

1199. life in him, when we

  1200. find our meaning in

1201. him, when we find our

  1202. purposes in him, when

  1203. we find our direction

1204. in him, then we have

  1205. that which sustains

  1206. us through all of

  1207. life.

  1208. See, until we start

  1209. where it went wrong,

  1210. which is in our

  1211. hearts, it will never

  1212. really ever come

  1213. right.

  1214. You may see

  1215. improvements and

  1216. changes.

  1217. You may recognize

  1218. that you are better

  1219. now than you were

  1220. five years ago.

  1221. But never mistake

  1222. that the gospel is

  1223. not about giving you

  1224. a reconditioned,

  1225. panel-beaten heart.

  1226. The gospel in Jesus

1227. Christ is about a new

  1228. heart and a new

  1229. disposition and new

  1230. leanings altogether.

1231. The gospel is able to

  1232. sustain us and to

  1233. strengthen us and to

1234. tie us and to draw us

1235. to himself and to make

  1236. us all together new.

  1237. Ravi Zacharias tells a

  1238. wonderful story of an

  1239. interpreter who

  1240. trained, interpreted to

1241. him in the Vietnam War

  1242. in the 1970s.

  1243. And then, of course,

  1244. after the Americans

  1245. fled, these men were

  1246. rounded up, went for

  1247. indoctrination and

  1248. training to try and

  1249. correct them, change

  1250. their thinking and

  1251. their views.

  1252. And this interpreter,

  1253. this young interpreter,

1254. was at the point of

  1255. being broken.

  1256. His interrogators

  1257. wanted to turn him

  1258. from his gospel-centered

  1259. convictions to

  1260. acknowledging communism

  1261. as the answer.

1262. And it went on for

  1263. years and he was

  1264. beginning to lose hope.

1265. He had no gospel, he

  1266. had no material to

1267. read, and in a state of

  1268. kind of desperation, he

  1269. felt himself slipping and

  1270. beginning to lose hope

  1271. and lose faith.

  1272. And the pressure was

  1273. mounting and he

  1274. realized they were

  1275. putting him under

  1276. pressure for a

  1277. decision.

  1278. And in a frail

  1279. prayer, he said,

  1280. Lord, if you're still

1281. there, if you are real,

1282. I need you to show

1283. yourself to me in the

  1284. next 48, 72 hours.

  1285. That morning, the

  1286. cells are opened and

  1287. his chosen said, you

1288. are going to do the

  1289. latrine duties, which

1290. was to clean out the

  1291. buckets of the

  1292. latrines of the

  1293. seniors in the prison

  1294. area.

  1295. The dirtiest and most

  1296. unappreciated job in the

  1297. whole camp.

  1298. And as he's cleaning

  1299. the latrines out, he

  1300. comes to one bucket

  1301. and he sees some

  1302. writing on the paper

  1303. and it's English.

  1304. Hadn't seen that.

1305. And so he looks a bit

  1306. more carefully and he

  1307. recognizes that it's

  1308. scripture.

1309. One of the army leaders

  1310. is using scripture as

  1311. toilet paper.

1312. And the words that he

1313. reads that first day are

1314. this, no, in all these

1315. things we are more than

  1316. conquerors through him

  1317. who loved us.

1318. For I am sure that

  1319. neither death nor life,

  1320. nor angels nor rulers,

  1321. nor things past or

  1322. present are able to

  1323. separate us from the

  1324. love of God.

1325. He put his hand up.

1326. He said, I want to do

  1327. latrine duty every day.

1328. And every day he would

1329. take that torn paper and

1330. he would wash it, clean

  1331. it.

1332. And he fed himself on

  1333. what was for another

  1334. person nothing more than

1335. toilet paper but for him

1336. the words of life that

1337. reignited his soul and his

  1338. faith in the Father.

  1339. Folk, where's your

  1340. conviction?

  1341. Is it in yourself?

  1342. Or have you seen

  1343. something of the

  1344. awesomeness of the one

  1345. who redeems and

  1346. restores?

  1347. Will we come with

1348. prayers that are full of

  1349. conviction not in how

1350. well we pray but in who

  1351. we pray to?

  1352. And will we understand

1353. that as we just say the

  1354. most fleeting of

  1355. redemptive pleas, be

  1356. merciful to me.

1357. He comes in ways to

  1358. restore that we could

  1359. never ever have

  1360. imagined.

  1361. Amen.

  1362. Let's stand as I close

  1363. in prayer and then

  1364. worship team will come

  1365. up.

  1366. Great and awesome God,

  1367. we come with bowed

  1368. hearts and bent heads

  1369. before you this morning

1370. and we say that there is

  1371. no one like you.

  1372. You are God.

1373. Forgive us of the way we

1374. trivialize you, the way we

1375. make you so small, the way

  1376. we reduce you.

  1377. And Lord, into our

  1378. hearts and into our

  1379. minds explode something

  1380. of your awesomeness and

  1381. your magnificence, your

  1382. bigness and your

  1383. hugeness towards us and

  1384. change us and transform

  1385. us.

  1386. That these vessels of

  1387. clay might become

  1388. instruments which sing

  1389. the songs of Zion,

  1390. which shine and reflect

  1391. the glory of the

  1392. greatest Savior, the

  1393. Lord Jesus Christ.

  1394. And may our lives,

  1395. Lord, be reflective of

  1396. something that builds

1397. more than just brick and

1398. stone, but is used to

  1399. extend your kingdom and

  1400. build broken lives once

  1401. again that might house

  1402. the praises of Zion.

  1403. Father, these are the

1404. things for which we ask

  1405. in Jesus' precious name.

  1406. Amen.

  1407. God bless you all.
