  1. Father in heaven, there is no one like you.

  2. There is no one in history, no one in the past, present, or future that is comparable to you.

  3. You are the great creator.

  4. You are the great I am.

  5. And Lord, this morning, we remember your goodness.

  6. You promised you would send your son, Jesus, to save us from our brokenness, from our depravity, and from our sin, and you did.

  7. Thank you that Christ came not after we repented.

  8. He didn't come after we confessed our sin.

  9. But Jesus, you came before.

  10. You gave your life for us while our backs were still turned away from you.

  11. Thank you, Jesus.

  12. Thank you, Lord.

  13. This morning, we remember Kevin as he is in Taiwan at the City to City intensive training.

  14. God, may your spirit fill him to see more clearly your heart for church planting in Hong Kong and elsewhere,

  15. and how Watermark fits into that plan.

  16. We lift up City to City, Asia Pacific to you, asking God that your hand be upon this ministry.

  17. We pray for Gunnar Raman and the City to City Asia Pacific leaders.

  18. Please, God, would you inspire them to maximize the spread of the gospel through your vision for church planting.

  19. Would you encourage them to persevere when times get tough?

  20. Would you remind them that although we are all called to plant and water,

  21. it is you, God, who brings the harvest.

  22. So, God, may prayer be a core foundation of their work.

  23. And we also lift up International Christian Fellowship to you.

  24. Thank you, God, that many students in Hong Kong have come to dedicate their lives to you through ICF.

  25. And thank you for the relationships that have been established there.

  26. We pray that more students would come to know the love of Christ through ICF.

  27. God, as this is exam time for the students,

  28. we pray that your presence will be with them as they study and take these exams.

  29. May they feel your peace instead of stress.

  30. And I pray, God, that the students would know that their future is not tied up in grades,

  31. nor A's or B's or C's, nor even career, God,

  32. but their future is secure in you.

  33. And I also want to pray specifically for the ICF students who will be returning to their home countries.

  34. Simon, Alex, Shearer, Joanna, Annie, Justin, and Wayne.

  35. I pray, God, as they head back to their home countries,

  36. would you go before them?

  37. May your spirit be with them.

  38. Would you provide them with godly, centered relationships?

  39. And finally, God, I pray for the rest of this service.

  40. I pray for this sermon on the topic of money.

  41. I pray that your truth will be made known.

  42. May your word come through loud and clear.

  43. May my word be in the background.

  44. And would our hearts be soft and open to receiving and accepting

  45. and responding to your word this morning.

  46. In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray.

  47. Amen.

  48. Can I invite Kwadjo and Lorna up to read today's passage?

  49. Good morning.

  50. Good morning.

  51. The scripture reading comes from Luke chapter 12.

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  52. Please follow along in your bulletins on the screen.

  53. I think we might be blocking people.

  54. Someone in the crowd said to him,

  55. Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.

  56. But he said to him,

  57. Man, who has made me a judge or arbitrator over you?

  58. And he said to them,

  59. Take care and be on your guard against all covetousness.

  60. For one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.

  61. And he told them a parable saying,

  62. The land of a rich man produced plentifully.

  63. And he thought to himself,

  64. What shall I do?

  65. For I have nowhere to store my crops.

  66. And he said,

  67. I will do this.

  68. I will tear down my barns and build larger ones.

  69. And there I will store all my grain and my goods.

  70. And I will say to my soul,

  71. Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years.

  72. Relax, eat, drink, be merry.

  73. But God said to him,

  74. Fool, this night your soul is required of you.

  75. And the things you have prepared, whose will they be?

  76. Soul is the one who lays up treasure for himself.

  77. And is not rich toward God.

  78. This is the word of God.

  79. Thanks, Kwadro and Lorna, for reading the passage.

  80. Money and greed are difficult topics to talk about.

  81. So difficult, in fact, that both Kevin and Chris have took today off.

  82. I'm kidding, of course.

  83. As we prayed, Kevin is in Taiwan at the City of City conference.

  84. And Chris has taken a delegation from Watermark to Turkey.

  85. But money and greed are still difficult topics to talk about.

  86. Even within our families, those to whom we're closest,

  87. money is oftentimes a very sensitive subject.

  88. At work, we openly talk about our career ambitions

  89. or where we want to be financially in 10 years.

  90. But admitting that we're greedy for money

  91. because of the security and pleasure that money provides,

  92. who says that, right?

  93. And in the Christian church context,

  94. I would argue we don't talk about money enough.

  95. We talk about other messy things,

  96. other aspects of sin in our lives.

  97. But admitting we love money too much

  98. or confessing we have a problem with materialism,

  99. not very common, at least from my experience.

  100. But Jesus Christ, when he walked this earth,

  101. spoke about money a lot.

  102. And that is because money has the ability to do a lot of good,

  103. but a lot of harm as well.

  104. 15% of all of the recorded words of Jesus

  105. were on the topic of money.

  106. As a whole, the Bible mentions money 2,350 times,

  107. more than faith and prayer combined.

  108. An astonishing fact when you think about it.

  109. And that is why at Watermark,

  110. we've dedicated five Sundays to talk about

  111. or to see what the Bible talks about

  112. on this topic of money.

  113. Because whether we lived in the first century in Israel

  114. or in 2019 in Hong Kong,

  115. the principle is the same.

  116. How we view and treat money

  117. is a measure of our true character.

  118. Money is real.

  119. It's tangible.

  120. It's concrete.

  121. How we spend it,

  122. how we save it or hoard it,

  123. and how we give it away

  124. speaks to the very core,

  125. the very essence of our lives.

  126. As Christians.

  127. So today as we continue this sermon series on money,

  128. we will look at the teachings of Jesus Christ.

  129. And as we consider this passage from Luke 12,

  130. I'll try to make these three points.

  131. Be on your guard against greed,

  132. how the pursuit of money clouds our vision of God.

  133. And finally, let's be rich toward God.

  134. It's very quiet in here right now.

  135. Let's dive right into it.

  136. Be on your guard against greed.

  137. Looking at Luke 12, verse 13,

    Luke 12:13

  138. the very first verse of this passage.

  139. Someone in the crowd said to Jesus,

  140. Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.

  141. So, the context of this passage is

  142. Jesus has been teaching about the kingdom of God.

  143. And he taught that in his kingdom,

  144. it's this upside down or counterintuitive kingdom

  145. whose values and principles are totally opposed

  146. to the values of this world.

  147. Christ taught that blessed are the poor in spirit,

  148. for theirs is the kingdom of God.

  149. Blessed are those who mourned,

  150. for they will be comforted.

  151. He taught that it's not the proud or the self-righteous

  152. who will see God and know God.

  153. No.

  154. Jesus taught it's the meek, the lowly,

  155. the one who humbles himself

  156. and admits his desperate need

  157. for God's grace and forgiveness.

  158. That is a person who will see God and know God.

  159. Then imagine, all of a sudden,

  160. this man elbows his way through the crowd,

  161. desperate for Christ to hear what he has to say.

  162. He finally gets within earshot and he yells out,

  163. Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.

  164. Now, according to the Jewish law regarding inheritance,

  165. which you can find in Deuteronomy 21, verse 17,

    Deuteronomy 21:17

  166. if a father had more than one son,

  167. he must give his eldest son

  168. a double share of the inheritance over other sons.

  169. And so clearly, this man, this son,

  170. didn't think the inheritance laws were fair.

  171. But interestingly,

  172. instead of addressing this man's request

  173. or his demand,

  174. instead, Christ uses this opportunity

  175. to teach a very valuable lesson

  176. on money and greed.

  177. He turns to the whole crowd

  178. and in verse 15, Jesus says,

  179. Be on your guard against all covetousness,

  180. for one's life does not consist

  181. in the abundance of his possessions.

  182. The NIV says,

  183. Be on your guard against all kinds of greed.

  184. Last year,

  185. my wife and I heard about

  186. an attempted abduction of a kindergarten student

  187. right here in Hong Kong.

  188. And when we heard about this,

  189. we immediately started teaching

  190. our three-year-old daughter, Kiva,

  191. to be extra careful

  192. when leaving her school.

  193. In particular,

  194. not to let any strangers

  195. talk to her

  196. or certainly not to touch her.

  197. We tried to teach her

  198. to be on her guard

  199. against strangers.

  200. This is kind of what

  201. Jesus is saying here.

  202. Be on your guard against greed.

  203. It's the unseen villain

  204. who prowls around

  205. waiting to attack.

  206. Let's think about a few examples.

  207. You did not get a pay raise this year,

  208. but your colleague,

  209. who you don't think

  210. works as hard as you,

  211. got one.

  212. And NIV starts creeping into your mind.

  213. Be on your guard

  214. against greed.

  215. Or someone you know

  216. just bought an apartment in Hong Kong

  217. and you find yourself

  218. feeling a little bit resentful

  219. because you're still renting.

  220. Be on your guard

  221. against greed.

  222. And so we need to recognize,

  223. it doesn't matter where you are

  224. on the financial spectrum,

  225. whether you live paycheck to paycheck

  226. or you have enough money

  227. in the bank to retire today,

  228. greed is a real danger

  229. and temptation

  230. for all of us.

  231. It's kind of there.

  232. It's like the virus

  233. on the computer.

  234. It's there,

  235. we don't even know it.

  236. Now most of us here

  237. probably know

  238. that do not covet

  239. was the tenth commandment

  240. that God gave Israel

  241. in Exodus 20.

  242. Do not covet

  243. your neighbor's house.

  244. Do not covet

  245. your neighbor's wife

  246. or his manservant

  247. or maidservant,

  248. his ox or donkey

  249. or anything that belongs

  250. to your neighbor.

  251. The first nine commandments

  252. were instructions

  253. about outward actions.

  254. Have no other gods before me.

  255. Remember the Sabbath day.

  256. Honor your father and mother.

  257. Do not murder,

  258. lie, steal

  259. or commit adultery.

  260. These are all

  261. outward actions

  262. that we can tangibly

  263. do or not do.

  264. But what's unique

  265. about the tenth commandment

  266. of do not covet

  267. is that it has to do

  268. with the inward motivation.

  269. It has to do

  270. with the heart.

  271. And the Bible says

  272. that everything we do,

  273. good or bad,

  274. comes from this

  275. inward motivation.

  276. It comes from the heart.

  277. Listen to what Jesus said

  278. in Luke 6, 45.

  279. A good man brings

  280. good things

  281. out of the good

  282. stored up in his heart.

  283. And an evil man

  284. brings evil things

  285. out of the evil

  286. stored up in his heart.

  287. For the mouth speaks

  288. what the heart

  289. is full of.

  290. Most people,

  291. whether you are a follower

  292. of Jesus Christ or not,

  293. would probably agree

  294. that murder,

  295. stealing, lying,

  296. adultery, or morally wrong.

  297. But if you think about it,

  298. coveting or greed

  299. is a foundation

  300. or root

  301. of all of these

  302. outward actions.

  303. Let's look

  304. at a few more examples.

  305. You want a promotion

  306. at work

  307. for higher pay

  308. so you can

  309. buy the newest

  310. gadget or

  311. handbag.

  312. And so you speak poorly

  313. about your colleagues

  314. so you look better.

  315. Or,

  316. in your heart,

  317. do you secretly

  318. desire your

  319. married colleagues

  320. so you'll flirt

  321. with this person?

  322. Maybe ask this person

  323. out for a coffee alone?

  324. This may end

  325. in physical adultery,

  326. but it would have

  327. started

  328. in the heart.

  329. The Apostle Paul

  330. gave this instruction

  331. in Colossians 3.5.

  332. He said,

  333. Put to death,

  334. therefore,

  335. whatever belongs

  336. to your earthly nature,

  337. sexual immorality,

  338. impurity,

  339. lust,

  340. evil desires,

  341. and greed,

  342. which is idolatry.

  343. Greed is idolatry.

  344. And like any kind

  345. of idolatry,

  346. it means this false idol

  347. has been elevated

  348. to a point in our life

  349. which is higher

  350. or greater than that

  351. of God,

  352. our Creator.

  353. So why should we be

  354. on our guard

  355. against greed?

  356. What is the big deal?

  357. What's the consequence

  358. if we have this

  359. heart condition?

  360. Well,

  361. that leads us

  362. to the second point,

  363. which is that greed

  364. and the pursuit

  365. of money

  366. clouds or obscures

  367. our vision of God.

  368. Greed and the pursuit

  369. of money

  370. clouds or obscures

  371. our vision of God.

  372. As it relates

  373. to coveting

  374. or being greedy

  375. for money

  376. and possessions,

  377. we learn it starts

  378. in the heart

  379. but it manifests itself

  380. physically

  381. with how we deal

  382. with money.

  383. Specifically,

  384. how we spend,

  385. how we save

  386. or hoard

  387. and how we give away

  388. money.

  389. And so Jesus,

  390. after warning

  391. about greed,

  392. tells a parable

  393. or a story

  394. to illustrate

  395. in a concrete way

  396. how this heart condition

  397. impacts the way

  398. we treat money.

  399. He tells a story

  400. about a wealthy farmer

  401. whose land

  402. produced plentifully.

  403. So abundant

  404. was his harvest

  405. that he had nowhere

  406. to store his crops

  407. and so he tears

  408. down his old barns,

  409. he builds newer

  410. and bigger barns

  411. and he stores

  412. all his excess grain

  413. in there

  414. and this,

  415. he thinks,

  416. will allow him

  417. to relax,

  418. eat,

  419. drink,

  420. and be merry.

  421. Essentially,

  422. this farmer

  423. wanted to have

  424. a cushy retirement

  425. with a big bank account.

  426. Anyone like that?

  427. Okay,

  428. you don't have to answer

  429. that question.

  430. It's okay.

  431. It's okay.

  432. He thought his life,

  433. his security

  434. were all tied up

  435. in his wealth.

  436. But God said to him,

  437. you fool,

  438. this very night

  439. your soul

  440. is required of you

  441. and the things

  442. you are prepared,

  443. whose will they be?

  444. So what's wrong

  445. with the rich farmer?

  446. Well, first,

  447. let's be clear

  448. in what Jesus

  449. is not saying.

  450. Jesus is not saying

  451. that it's wrong

  452. to work hard for a living.

  453. He's not saying

  454. that it's wrong

  455. to be a successful

  456. business person.

  457. We need more

  458. honest,

  459. successful business people

  460. to give their money

  461. away to honest ministry

  462. so that many

  463. will be blessed,

  464. the poor,

  465. the marginalized,

  466. the lost.

  467. They would all know

  468. the love of Christ.

  469. But what Jesus

  470. is saying

  471. is that the rich farmer

  472. elevated his personal wealth

  473. and his desire

  474. to retire rich

  475. and eat,

  476. drink,

  477. and be merry.

  478. He elevated this

  479. far above

  480. his view

  481. of God.

  482. in short,

  483. his greed,

  484. his desire

  485. for wealth

  486. and security,

  487. that was his God.

  488. And we know this

  489. because the farmer

  490. never acknowledged

  491. that God was the one

  492. that gave him

  493. all that he had.

  494. He wasn't thankful.

  495. Psalm 24,

    Psalms 24:1

  496. verse 1 says,

  497. the earth is the Lord's

  498. and everything in it,

  499. the world

  500. and all who live in it.

  501. It's hard to argue

  502. with that one.

  503. James 1, 17 says,

  504. every good

  505. and perfect gift

  506. comes from above,

  507. coming down

  508. from the Father

  509. of the heavenly lights.

  510. Also hard

  511. to argue with.

  512. And second,

  513. the farmer

  514. never thought

  515. about how he could

  516. use the blessing

  517. he received

  518. to bless others.

  519. He wasn't generous.

  520. He hoarded,

  521. he hoarded

  522. all that stuff

  523. to himself.

  524. And so God,

  525. his creator,

  526. the one who generously

  527. gave him

  528. all that he had,

  529. says to him,

  530. you fool.

  531. So how does

  532. the pursuit of money

  533. make us foolish?

  534. How does the pursuit

  535. of money make us foolish?

  536. Well,

  537. there are probably

  538. many reasons,

  539. but the one I'm focusing on

  540. and highlighting is

  541. because the pursuit

  542. of money

  543. clouds or distorts

  544. or obscures

  545. our vision

  546. of God.

  547. Going back

  548. to what Jesus said

  549. in verse 15,

  550. for one's life

  551. does not consist

  552. in the abundance

  553. of his possessions.

  554. Okay?

  555. So what is the point

  556. of life then?

  557. Maybe your answer is

  558. to have a fulfilling career.

  559. The point of life

  560. is to have meaningful

  561. relationships,

  562. to fall in love,

  563. get married,

  564. have children,

  565. raise a family.

  566. These are all

  567. good things.

  568. But throughout the Bible,

  569. both the Old

  570. and the New Testament,

  571. the purpose of

  572. every human life

  573. is to glorify

  574. the name of

  575. Almighty God.

  576. Life consists

  577. in making God's

  578. name great,

  579. to worship him

  580. by finding our deepest

  581. and truest delight

  582. in him,

  583. and by living lives

  584. that reflect his goodness,

  585. his sacrifice,

  586. and his love.

  587. But we can only do this

  588. if we have the correct

  589. vision of God

  590. as sovereign,

  591. as holy,

  592. as perfect

  593. and righteous,

  594. worthy to be praised

  595. above all things

  596. created on this earth.

  597. And we can only do this

  598. if we see God's Son,

  599. our Lord Jesus,

  600. as our greatest treasure,

  601. understanding that

  602. although Jesus

  603. was rich,

  604. he became poor for us,

  605. that you and I

  606. may know God.

  607. I've talked to many

  608. Christians

  609. over the years,

  610. and I

  611. think,

  612. if we're really honest

  613. with ourselves,

  614. many of us struggle

  615. to see God

  616. as real,

  617. as tangible.

  618. We read about God

  619. in the Bible,

  620. we listen to sermons

  621. on Sunday morning,

  622. but day to day,

  623. God is not real,

  624. he's not tangible,

  625. he's not there

  626. in the nitty-gritty

  627. everyday moment of life.

  628. Maybe that's why

  629. we worry so much.

  630. And I think

  631. for many of us,

  632. this is because

  633. the pursuit of money,

  634. or the struggles

  635. with money,

  636. or our desire

  637. to make more money,

  638. clouds

  639. our vision

  640. of God.

  641. Two reasons for this.

  642. First,

  643. it's distracting.

  644. It takes up so much

  645. time and effort

  646. to pursue money.

  647. Whether you're living

  648. paycheck to paycheck

  649. or you can retire

  650. today

  651. with the money

  652. in your bank,

  653. pursuing money

  654. takes up so much time

  655. in our hearts.

  656. How can we fit

  657. the worship of Christ

  658. in there?

  659. Much more than actual

  660. hours spent working,

  661. it's the time spent

  662. worrying about money

  663. or striving to make

  664. more money

  665. that drains our spirit

  666. the most.

  667. And second,

  668. the pursuit of money

  669. clouds our vision of God

  670. because it's deceiving.

  671. In a different passage,

  672. Jesus talks about

  673. how the deceitfulness

  674. of riches

  675. can choke his word.

  676. Meaning we can hear

  677. the good news

  678. of the gospel

  679. with our ears

  680. but it has no relevance

  681. in our day-to-day lives

  682. because the worries

  683. of the world

  684. or the lies

  685. that wealth

  686. would give us happiness

  687. blinds us

  688. as to the realness

  689. and the power

  690. of God.

  691. A number of years ago,

  692. Watermark hosted

  693. an executive

  694. at one of the world's

  695. largest technology companies.

  696. This man was a Christian

  697. but he's also wildly

  698. successful in his career.

  699. He gave a small group talk

  700. and out of the many words

  701. of wisdom that I heard,

  702. one thing I'll never forget

  703. is this man said that

  704. as his career progressed,

  705. as he got very successful,

  706. the main temptation

  707. he faced was this idea

  708. that it was him himself

  709. that drove his success.

  710. You see, success

  711. in any sense,

  712. doing well on your exams,

  713. getting a good bonus,

  714. getting a promotion,

  715. success in any sense

  716. can lead us to believe

  717. that it's our hard work,

  718. it's our great

  719. decision-making abilities,

  720. it's our great network

  721. of relationships

  722. that drives everything.

  723. We work hard,

  724. we deserve it.

  725. That's a lie.

  726. That is money obscuring

  727. or blocking

  728. our vision of God.

  729. Think about it this way.

  730. Think about stargazing.

  731. Think about stargazing

  732. in Hong Kong, right?

  733. Hard, yes.

  734. In Hong Kong,

  735. at night,

  736. you look up at the sky,

  737. you would struggle

  738. to see even one star.

  739. There's so many bright lights

  740. out there,

  741. you can't see anything.

  742. But it doesn't mean

  743. the stars aren't there.

  744. The stars are always up there

  745. in all their God-created beauty.

  746. But we can't see them

  747. in most places in Hong Kong

  748. because of the distraction

  749. of the man-made light.

  750. Now imagine you're

  751. on the plains of Mongolia.

  752. No 10-tower apartment complexes,

  753. no skyscrapers in Central,

  754. no man-made light,

  755. nothing to obscure

  756. or block your vision

  757. of the stars.

  758. Look up at the sky at night,

  759. you'd see hundreds,

  760. if not thousands,

  761. of stars.

  762. We need God

  763. to remove

  764. that which blocks

  765. or obscures

  766. our vision of Him.

  767. Because in Hong Kong,

  768. perhaps more than

  769. in any other city

  770. in the world,

  771. we are constantly blinded

  772. as to the realness of God

  773. because,

  774. let's be honest,

  775. the God here is money.

  776. All over Hong Kong,

  777. billboards are telling me

  778. that money will make me happy,

  779. safe and secure.

  780. The slogan of Hong Kong,

  781. the unofficial slogan

  782. of Hong Kong is,

  783. you have to have a property.

  784. If you do,

  785. you'll be happy.

  786. This culture is telling me,

  787. have a good career,

  788. have a property,

  789. be happy,

  790. be your own God.

  791. Sorry,

  792. I lost my place now.

  793. I'm getting too passionate

  794. about this.

  795. But that worldview

  796. leads to death.

  797. Because you'll never

  798. be truly satisfied

  799. because we all know

  800. that if you're fortunate enough

  801. to have a one-bedroom apartment,

  802. pretty soon you want

  803. a two-bedroom apartment

  804. and then you want

  805. a three-bedroom apartment

  806. and then you want

  807. a bigger three-bedroom apartment

  808. and so on and so forth

  809. because earthly possessions

  810. will never quench

  811. our intrinsic thirst

  812. for something

  813. that is not from this earth.

  814. earthly possessions

  815. will never quench

  816. our intrinsic thirst

  817. for something

  818. that is not

  819. from this earth.

  820. Or,

  821. as in today's passage,

  822. literal death

  823. will come knocking

  824. at your door

  825. when you least expect it.

  826. And all the stuff

  827. that we store up

  828. in barns

  829. will be,

  830. will turn into dust

  831. pretty quickly.

  832. Developed cities

  833. like Hong Kong

  834. are getting more

  835. and more materialistic,

  836. not less.

  837. More than ever,

  838. we need Almighty God

  839. to cut out

  840. all these material distractions

  841. which leads to death

  842. and open our eyes

  843. to see God again

  844. in all His beauty

  845. and majesty.

  846. And if people

  847. like you and I,

  848. people who are clouded

  849. by our wealth

  850. and our pursuit

  851. of money,

  852. if we really

  853. want to see God,

  854. not just hear about Him,

  855. not just read about Him,

  856. but truly know God

  857. deep in our hearts,

  858. then we need to be

  859. rich toward God.

  860. Jesus ends this parable

  861. by saying,

  862. so is the one

  863. who lays up treasure

  864. for himself,

  865. i.e.,

  866. the rich fool

  867. and is not rich

  868. toward God.

  869. So what does it mean

  870. to be rich

  871. toward God?

  872. Well, first,

  873. every single aspect

  874. of our lives

  875. should be dedicated

  876. to God.

  877. Our careers,

  878. our families,

  879. our children,

  880. our money

  881. and possessions.

  882. And this is because

  883. we realize that

  884. we only have anything

  885. in this world

  886. because God

  887. has been so

  888. incredibly generous

  889. to us.

  890. John Piper

  891. says it like this,

  892. being rich

  893. toward God,

  894. therefore,

  895. is the heart

  896. being drawn

  897. toward God

  898. as our riches.

  899. Rich toward God

  900. means we are drawn

  901. or pulled,

  902. excuse me,

  903. rich toward God

  904. means counting God

  905. greater riches

  906. than anything

  907. on this earth.

  908. It means using

  909. earthly riches

  910. to show how much

  911. you value God.

  912. So,

  913. instead of being drawn

  914. in the direction

  915. of money

  916. and possessions

  917. and the security

  918. and comfort

  919. that money provides,

  920. being rich

  921. toward God

  922. means we are drawn

  923. or pulled

  924. toward God,

  925. dedicating our lives,

  926. giving our lives,

  927. including our money

  928. as worship to Him

  929. because God

  930. is our greatest treasure

  931. and our highest value.

  932. value.

  933. So,

  934. what does this look like?

  935. Well,

  936. as it relates to money,

  937. being rich

  938. toward God

  939. means we regularly

  940. give financially

  941. back to God

  942. what He has first

  943. given us

  944. as worship.

  945. Being rich

  946. toward God

  947. means we regularly

  948. give financially

  949. back to God

  950. what He has first

  951. given us

  952. as worship.

  953. we don't just

  954. talk about

  955. giving back

  956. to God.

  957. We don't just

  958. pray about it.

  959. We don't just

  960. do it once in a while

  961. when it's convenient

  962. or when we remember.

  963. We regularly

  964. give back to God

  965. what He has first

  966. given us

  967. as worship.

  968. Now,

  969. I don't know

  970. about you,

  971. but this idea

  972. about being rich

  973. toward God

  974. has been very

  975. challenging to me

  976. my whole life.

  977. See,

  978. I grew up

  979. believing

  980. that money

  981. equaled

  982. security.

  983. And so,

  984. as a teenager,

  985. as a college student,

  986. fresh grad,

  987. I worked hard

  988. because I thought

  989. that having a good career

  990. would give me money

  991. and money

  992. would give me security.

  993. The 2008 financial crisis

  994. had a big impact

  995. on me.

  996. I was living

  997. in New York

  998. at the time

  999. and I lost

  1000. my high-paying job

  1001. in New York

  1002. and I also lost

  1003. a decent amount

  1004. of my savings

  1005. during the crisis.

1006. And this made me realize

  1007. that life

  1008. does not consist

  1009. in the abundance

  1010. of possessions.

  1011. And over the years

  1012. as I've invested

  1013. my own money,

  1014. I began to realize

1015. I was only doing so

  1016. for myself.

  1017. before I invested

  1018. I never prayed

  1019. and I never asked

  1020. God

  1021. how can he use

  1022. the profits

  1023. to bless others.

  1024. I realized

  1025. I realized

  1026. how greedy

  1027. I was.

  1028. Generosity

  1029. was never

  1030. in my vocabulary

  1031. up until

  1032. a few years ago.

  1033. when my wife

  1034. and I

  1035. first got married

  1036. she told me

  1037. that it's tradition

  1038. in her family

  1039. for all the married

  1040. couples

  1041. to give presents

  1042. to all the children

  1043. in the family

  1044. and Celeste

1045. has a very big family.

  1046. So I was like

1047. there were so many kids

1048. we had to give presents

1049. to every single one of them

  1050. and two months later

  1051. we had to give

  1052. life seed

1053. to all of them as well.

  1054. We got into

  1055. a massive fight

  1056. over this.

  1057. I realized then

  1058. how much

  1059. this idea

  1060. of giving

  1061. being generous

  1062. it bothered me.

  1063. I had been attending

  1064. Watermark

  1065. for a number

  1066. of years

  1067. but my giving

  1068. to God

  1069. it

  1070. it wasn't

  1071. it wasn't regular

  1072. it wasn't

  1073. sacrificial

  1074. it certainly

  1075. wasn't

  1076. worship.

  1077. See what I'm trying

  1078. to say is

1079. I've been the rich fool

  1080. most of my life.

  1081. Most of my life

  1082. as a Christian

  1083. I've been pursuing

  1084. my own gain

  1085. trying to build up

  1086. stuff in barns

  1087. for myself

  1088. and I have never

  1089. truly been rich

  1090. toward God.

  1091. That Christmas

  1092. when I gave

  1093. those presents

  1094. to the kids

  1095. who are now

  1096. part of my family

  1097. it was God

  1098. slowly

  1099. starting

  1100. to change

  1101. my heart.

  1102. As I gave

  1103. those Lego toys

  1104. to them

  1105. or the Marvel

  1106. toys to them

  1107. I could see

  1108. the joy

  1109. on their faces

  1110. and I

  1111. also received

  1112. joy.

  1113. As I finally

  1114. confessed

  1115. my sin

  1116. my sin

  1117. of greed

  1118. my sin

  1119. of this

  1120. lack of

  1121. generosity

  1122. I began

  1123. to see

  1124. Christ

  1125. in a new

  1126. way.

  1127. As I realized

  1128. how truly

  1129. messed up

  1130. I was

  1131. how truly

  1132. sinful

  1133. I was

  1134. I was more

  1135. desperate than

  1136. ever

  1137. for the grace

  1138. of God

  1139. and as I

  1140. received

  1141. that grace

  1142. Christ

  1143. became more

  1144. beautiful

  1145. and wonderful

  1146. to me

  1147. than ever

  1148. before.

  1149. and then

  1150. I

  1151. started giving

  1152. regularly

  1153. to God

  1154. through this

  1155. church body

  1156. at Watermark.

  1157. I was

  1158. convicted that I

  1159. needed to give

  1160. a meaningful

  1161. sacrificial amount

  1162. of my monthly

  1163. income

  1164. back to God

  1165. as worship.

  1166. And then after

  1167. I started giving

  1168. to other ministries

  1169. families

  1170. and individuals

  1171. who

  1172. through prayer

  1173. I thought

  1174. God wanted to

  1175. bless

  1176. through me.

  1177. See I

  1178. wasn't

  1179. blessing them

  1180. it was

  1181. God

  1182. blessing them

  1183. through me.

  1184. I was just

  1185. I'm just

  1186. this conduit

  1187. I'm just

  1188. this middleman

  1189. of sorts.

  1190. But you know

  1191. even today

  1192. man I still

  1193. struggle

  1194. and I still

  1195. wrestle

  1196. with this idea

  1197. of giving

  1198. to God.

  1199. Every time

  1200. I write

  1201. a check

  1202. to Watermark

  1203. or I give

  1204. money

  1205. and I think

  1206. about my

  1207. monthly expenses

  1208. with three

  1209. kids and all

  1210. that stuff

  1211. man it's

  1212. painful.

  1213. Does anybody

  1214. know what I'm

  1215. talking about?

  1216. Anybody?

  1217. Anybody?

  1218. You know one of

  1219. the beautiful

  1220. things about being

  1221. part of a church

  1222. body is that

  1223. all of us come

  1224. from different

  1225. walks of life.

  1226. But this topic

  1227. of money

  1228. and greed

  1229. touches every

  1230. single one

  1231. of us.

  1232. For some

  1233. of us here

  1234. giving to

  1235. God is a

  1236. regular activity

  1237. in your life.

  1238. My challenge

  1239. to you is

  1240. let's not do

  1241. that religiously.

  1242. You know

  1243. we worship

  1244. God through

  1245. sung worship

  1246. right?

  1247. But if we

  1248. sing songs

  1249. with our

  1250. mouths but

  1251. our mind

  1252. is on the

  1253. football game

  1254. or on

  1255. dim sum

  1256. afterwards

  1257. that's not

  1258. worship.

  1259. We worship

  1260. God with

  1261. our heart

  1262. soul

  1263. mind

  1264. and strength

  1265. and so

  1266. my challenge

  1267. to you is

  1268. the next

  1269. time you

  1270. write a check

  1271. do so

  1272. prayerfully

  1273. and worshipfully

  1274. praying that

  1275. God would

  1276. multiply

  1277. those resources

  1278. a hundred

  1279. times for

  1280. his kingdom

  1281. so that

  1282. many would

  1283. know the

  1284. love of

  1285. Christ.

  1286. For others

  1287. here

  1288. perhaps giving

  1289. to God

  1290. isn't something

  1291. you're used

  1292. to doing

  1293. or maybe

  1294. you don't

  1295. think you

  1296. can give

  1297. to God

  1298. because of

  1299. your financial

  1300. circumstances.

  1301. some of

  1302. you I

  1303. imagine

  1304. are thinking

  1305. even right

  1306. now

  1307. don't you

  1308. know Oscar

  1309. that my

  1310. salary in

  1311. Hong Kong

  1312. hasn't changed

  1313. in ten

  1314. years but

  1315. property

  1316. prices are

  1317. up two

  1318. to three

  1319. times?

  1320. Or don't

  1321. you know

  1322. Oscar that

  1323. I have to

  1324. give a

  1325. huge percentage

  1326. of my

  1327. monthly income

  1328. to my

  1329. parents and

  1330. I have no

  1331. money for

  1332. myself left

  1333. over?

  1334. I can't

  1335. give.

  1336. I need to

  1337. save.

  1338. I'm not

  1339. hoarding,

  1340. I'm being

  1341. prudent.

  1342. I can

  1343. relate to

  1344. that.

  1345. My wife

  1346. and I

  1347. had our

  1348. second and

  1349. third child

  1350. seven months

  1351. ago and

  1352. man when I

  1353. was crunching

  1354. those numbers

  1355. on diapers,

  1356. formula,

  1357. potentially school,

  1358. tuition,

  1359. man I just

  1360. stopped.

  1361. I had a

  1362. headache.

  1363. But you

  1364. know in

  1365. spite of our

  1366. financial

  1367. struggles,

  1368. in spite of

  1369. our financial

  1370. uncertainties,

  1371. I want to

  1372. encourage us

  1373. to follow

  1374. God's

  1375. kingdom

  1376. principles,

  1377. this upside

  1378. down

  1379. counterintuitive

  1380. kingdom

  1381. principles.

  1382. I want to

  1383. encourage us

  1384. to be rich

  1385. toward God.

  1386. As I

  1387. close,

  1388. let me

  1389. highlight three

  1390. reasons why.

  1391. First and

  1392. foremost,

  1393. because Christ,

  1394. Jesus Christ,

  1395. has made us

  1396. incredibly rich.

  1397. rich, but

  1398. it's only

  1399. because Christ

  1400. became poor

  1401. so that you

  1402. and I

  1403. through his

  1404. poverty might

  1405. become rich.

  1406. Before the

  1407. world began,

  1408. before any

  1409. human was

  1410. ever born,

  1411. before money

  1412. and banking

  1413. existed,

  1414. Jesus Christ

  1415. decided to

  1416. come to

  1417. this earth

  1418. and live a

  1419. very poor

  1420. life.

  1421. He lived

  1422. 33 years

  1423. financially

  1424. poor,

  1425. he served

  1426. thousands of

  1427. people,

  1428. he worked

  1429. hard,

  1430. but he never

  1431. started up

  1432. anything in

  1433. barns for

  1434. himself.

  1435. and then

  1436. he died

  1437. for us.

  1438. And on

  1439. that cross,

  1440. when he

  1441. died,

  1442. he died

  1443. poor,

  1444. in spirit

  1445. and in

  1446. finances.

  1447. Through the

  1448. poverty of

  1449. Christ,

  1450. you and I

  1451. have become

  1452. rich.

  1453. Do we

  1454. see ourselves

  1455. as rich?

  1456. Do we?

  1457. If I were

  1458. to guess,

  1459. I would say

  1460. most people

  1461. would say

  1462. no.

  1463. Lee Ka-Shing

  1464. is rich,

  1465. Jeff Bezos

  1466. is very

  1467. rich,

  1468. but you

  1469. and I,

  1470. we're not

  1471. rich.

  1472. But if you

  1473. are running

  1474. water and

  1475. a roof over

  1476. your head,

  1477. you are among

  1478. the richest

  1479. people on

  1480. this planet.

  1481. How much

  1482. more then are

  1483. you and I

  1484. spiritually rich

  1485. because our

  1486. faith is in

  1487. Jesus Christ?

  1488. Because our

  1489. faith is not

  1490. in stocks,

  1491. not in bonds,

  1492. it's not in

  1493. real estate.

  1494. All those

  1495. things can be

  1496. wiped out in

  1497. a heartbeat

  1498. during any

  1499. random financial

  1500. disaster.

  1501. No.

  1502. Our faith

  1503. is in

  1504. God,

  1505. the one

  1506. who is

  1507. unshakable,

  1508. unchanging,

  1509. eternal,

  1510. the one

  1511. who existed

  1512. before time.

  1513. And our

  1514. faith is

  1515. in Jesus

  1516. Christ,

  1517. his son,

  1518. who paid

  1519. that ultimate

  1520. price for us

  1521. so that you

  1522. and I

  1523. have an

  1524. eternal

  1525. future

  1526. which is

  1527. secure.

  1528. Today,

  1529. if your

  1530. faith

  1531. is in

  1532. Jesus

  1533. Christ,

  1534. you are

  1535. the son

  1536. or daughter

  1537. of the

  1538. great king.

  1539. Forget about

  1540. dividing the

  1541. inheritance.

  1542. You and

  1543. I will

  1544. receive the

  1545. full

  1546. inheritance

  1547. in heaven.

  1548. Amen.

  1549. Therefore,

  1550. we can be

  1551. rich toward

  1552. God in

  1553. this life

  1554. because we

  1555. know our

  1556. inheritance is

  1557. eternal

  1558. through the

  1559. blood of

  1560. Jesus.

  1561. Second

  1562. reason is

  1563. because it's

  1564. the only

  1565. way to

  1566. fight

  1567. greed.

  1568. If this

  1569. warning about

  1570. greed that

  1571. Jesus gives,

  1572. if this

  1573. has impacted

  1574. you today,

  1575. then you

  1576. realize it's

  1577. a battle we

  1578. need to

  1579. fight.

  1580. So let's

  1581. fight this

  1582. battle together.

  1583. And the

  1584. only way to

  1585. fight greed

  1586. is to

  1587. regularly give

  1588. your money

  1589. away.

  1590. The only way

  1591. to tear down

  1592. these false

  1593. idols of

  1594. materialism,

  1595. comfort,

  1596. pleasure,

  1597. is to

  1598. regularly give

  1599. your money

  1600. away.

  1601. Why?

  1602. Because then

  1603. it's not about

  1604. you.

  1605. It's not about

  1606. me.

  1607. money.

  1608. Worried about

  1609. how you're

  1610. going to

  1611. raise your

  1612. children in

  1613. Hong Kong

  1614. when the

  1615. city is so

  1616. expensive?

  1617. Give your

  1618. money to

  1619. God.

  1620. Worried about

  1621. how you're

  1622. going to

  1623. pay rent

  1624. when property

  1625. prices here

  1626. are the

  1627. most expensive

  1628. in the

  1629. world?

  1630. Give your

  1631. money to

  1632. God.

  1633. Concerned

  1634. that perhaps

  1635. money has

  1636. too tight a

  1637. grip on

  1638. you?

  1639. Yeah,

  1640. you guessed

  1641. it.

  1642. Give your

  1643. money to

  1644. God.

  1645. And as you

  1646. do so,

  1647. get on your

  1648. knees and

  1649. pray.

  1650. Let's pray

  1651. together.

  1652. Let's pray

  1653. that God

  1654. would tear

  1655. down this

  1656. false idol

  1657. of money

  1658. and greed

  1659. and put

  1660. Christ in

  1661. his rightful

  1662. place as

  1663. the only

  1664. one we

  1665. worship.

  1666. If you

  1667. are a young

  1668. adult this

  1669. morning or

  1670. fresh grad

  1671. here today

  1672. and you've

  1673. never given

  1674. to God,

  1675. I want to

  1676. encourage you.

  1677. Look,

  1678. I know how

  1679. difficult it

  1680. is to

  1681. part with

  1682. money you

  1683. think you've

  1684. earned.

  1685. You think

  1686. it's yours,

  1687. but it's

  1688. not.

  1689. You only

  1690. have it

  1691. because God

  1692. gave it

  1693. to you.

  1694. So just

  1695. start by

  1696. giving $50

  1697. or $100

  1698. a month

  1699. and pray

  1700. that God

  1701. will change

  1702. your heart

  1703. to start

  1704. giving

  1705. sacrificially

  1706. and worshipfully.

  1707. Final

  1708. reason

  1709. to be rich

  1710. toward God

  1711. is because

  1712. you will

  1713. receive

  1714. eternal

  1715. joy.

  1716. If you

  1717. want to

  1718. receive

  1719. eternal

  1720. joy,

  1721. joy which

  1722. transcends

  1723. all the

  1724. temporal

  1725. materialistic

  1726. joy that

  1727. we have

  1728. in materialism

  1729. and possessions,

  1730. then give.

  1731. If you

  1732. want to see

  1733. the beauty

  1734. of Christ

  1735. more clearly

  1736. without being

  1737. blinded by

  1738. this pursuit

  1739. of money,

  1740. then give.

  1741. Jesus said

  1742. it's more

  1743. blessed to

  1744. give than

  1745. to receive.

  1746. This is so

  1747. true.

  1748. I believe

  1749. there's a

  1750. very close

  1751. relationship

  1752. between

  1753. giving to

  1754. God

  1755. and receiving

  1756. incredible

  1757. joy.

  1758. And that

  1759. is because

  1760. as we

  1761. give to

  1762. God,

  1763. praying that

  1764. he would

  1765. multiply

  1766. or giving

  1767. a thousand

  1768. times so

  1769. that the

  1770. poor,

  1771. the marginalized,

  1772. the widows

  1773. and orphans

  1774. would be

  1775. comforted,

  1776. so that

  1777. the woman

  1778. in the

  1779. red light

  1780. districts

  1781. of Hong

  1782. Kong

  1783. would be

  1784. free of

  1785. that bondage,

  1786. so that

  1787. the lost,

  1788. those who don't

  1789. know him,

  1790. would know

  1791. the love

  1792. of Christ.

  1793. And as

  1794. we see

  1795. God's hand

  1796. working in

  1797. those lives,

  1798. we receive

  1799. joy because

  1800. we receive

  1801. a glimpse

  1802. of God's

  1803. own heart.

  1804. Because

  1805. God loves

  1806. the poor.

  1807. God loves

  1808. the marginalized.

  1809. He loves

  1810. the lost.

  1811. So as

  1812. we give,

  1813. we receive

  1814. joy.

  1815. And as

  1816. we receive

  1817. joy,

  1818. we're encouraged

  1819. to give

  1820. more.

  1821. As we

  1822. give more,

  1823. we are

  1824. encouraged,

  1825. we receive

  1826. joy,

  1827. we give

  1828. more,

  1829. there's

  1830. this

  1831. symbiotic

  1832. two-way

  1833. feedback loop

  1834. that goes

  1835. on and

  1836. on and

  1837. on.

  1838. So let's

  1839. be rich

  1840. to our

  1841. God because

  1842. Christ has

  1843. made us

  1844. rich,

  1845. because it's

  1846. the only

  1847. way to

  1848. fight greed,

  1849. and because

  1850. you will

  1851. receive

  1852. eternal

  1853. joy.

  1854. Let me

  1855. close.

  1856. friends,

  1857. the world

  1858. is constantly

  1859. telling us

  1860. this lie

  1861. that money

  1862. will make

  1863. us happy.

  1864. That is

  1865. a lie.

  1866. That is

  1867. the foolishness

  1868. of greed.

  1869. Let's not

  1870. let money

  1871. cloud our

  1872. vision

  1873. of God.

  1874. God,

  1875. there's an

  1876. eternity

  1877. after this

  1878. life.

  1879. If your

  1880. faith and

  1881. hope is

  1882. in Jesus

  1883. Christ this

  1884. morning,

  1885. on the last

  1886. day,

  1887. you and I

  1888. will stand

  1889. before him.

  1890. He'll show

  1891. us his

  1892. scars on

  1893. his hands.

  1894. He'll show

  1895. us the wound

  1896. on his

  1897. side.

  1898. And I'm

  1899. pretty sure

  1900. you and I

  1901. will fall

  1902. to our

  1903. knees in

  1904. worship,

  1905. finally realizing

  1906. the depth

  1907. of the love

  1908. and sacrifice

  1909. of Christ.

  1910. But before

  1911. then, we

  1912. have a little

  1913. bit of time

  1914. left on

  1915. earth.

  1916. So let's

  1917. be rich

  1918. toward God.

  1919. Let's give

  1920. Jesus everything

  1921. we have,

  1922. our lives,

  1923. including our

  1924. money,

  1925. because he

  1926. has given us

  1927. a secure

  1928. future,

  1929. and he

  1930. alone is

  1931. worthy.

  1932. Let's pray.

  1933. Father,

  1934. this is a

  1935. challenging

  1936. subject.

  1937. It's very

  1938. challenging for

  1939. me, Lord.

  1940. You know my

  1941. heart, God,

  1942. and you know

  1943. my struggles.

  1944. You know all

  1945. of our

  1946. struggles,

  1947. Lord.

  1948. Forgive us,

  1949. God,

  1950. where greed,

  1951. the pursuit

  1952. of money,

  1953. have clouded

  1954. our vision

  1955. of you.

  1956. Forgive us,

  1957. Lord, where

  1958. we've elevated

  1959. this idol of

  1960. money above

  1961. you.

  1962. Oh, God,

  1963. would you

  1964. tear down

  1965. this idol of

  1966. money, God,

  1967. of greed,

  1968. Father?

  1969. Father,

  1970. comfort us,

  1971. Lord,

  1972. when we worry

  1973. about money.

  1974. Teach us,

  1975. Lord,

  1976. that money

  1977. is not the

  1978. key to

  1979. happiness,

  1980. that we can

  1981. only receive

  1982. true joy

  1983. in you,

  1984. Jesus,

  1985. that you are

  1986. our greatest

  1987. treasure

  1988. and our

  1989. highest value.

  1990. Lord,

  1991. we're

  1992. rich toward

  1993. you.

  1994. And,

  1995. Father,

  1996. help us

  1997. to be rich

  1998. toward you,

  1999. not because

  2000. of some

  2001. religious need,

  2002. not because

  2003. of legalism,

  2004. not because

  2005. of guilt,

  2006. but help us

  2007. to be rich

  2008. toward you,

  2009. God,

  2010. because we

  2011. see you

  2012. as wonderful,

  2013. we see you

  2014. as beautiful,

  2015. we know you

  2016. as holy,

  2017. as sovereign,

  2018. as perfect,

  2019. as righteous,

  2020. and worthy

  2021. to be praised

  2022. and worshipped.

  2023. Give us

  2024. the vision

  2025. of you,

  2026. God,

  2027. that is so

  2028. beautiful

  2029. and so

  2030. wonderful

  2031. that all

  2032. these idols

  2033. of life

  2034. are meaningless

  2035. and nothing

  2036. compared to

  2037. you.

  2038. I want

  2039. to invite

  2040. the prayer

  2041. team

  2042. to come

  2043. up

  2044. in a

  2045. moment.

  2046. If

  2047. this warning

  2048. against greed,

  2049. if

  2050. this,

  2051. the word

  2052. of God

  2053. today has

  2054. impacted you,

  2055. right,

  2056. and you

  2057. realize that

  2058. greed is

  2059. something which

  2060. has gripped

  2061. your heart,

  2062. that the

  2063. worries about

  2064. money,

  2065. the lies

  2066. that this

  2067. world tells

  2068. us that

  2069. money will

  2070. give us

  2071. happiness,

  2072. if this

  2073. is something

  2074. that you

  2075. have

  2076. realized

  2077. has gripped

  2078. your heart

  2079. and you've

  2080. never been

  2081. rich toward

  2082. God,

  2083. I encourage

  2084. you to

  2085. come up

  2086. here for

  2087. prayer.

  2088. We would

  2089. love to

  2090. pray with

  2091. you and

  2092. walk with

  2093. you.

  2094. Pray for

  2095. God to

  2096. plant his

  2097. spirit into

  2098. your heart

  2099. to see that

  2100. he is our

  2101. greatest treasure,

  2102. not money,

  2103. to tear down

  2104. these idols

  2105. of materialism,

  2106. gaining

  2107. possessions,

  2108. storing up,

  2109. securing stuff

  2110. because we're

  2111. worried about

  2112. the future.

  2113. Let's pray

  2114. together.

  2115. Let's be a

  2116. church who

  2117. truly elevates

  2118. Christ at the

  2119. forefront of

  2120. our lives,

  2121. doing so

  2122. because we

  2123. have this

  2124. picture and

  2125. vision of

  2126. him as

  2127. awesome and

  2128. sovereign.

  2129. Maybe be a

  2130. church who

  2131. worships the

  2132. only God who

  2133. is worthy.

  2134. Amen.

  2135. Amen.

  2136. Amen.

  2137. Amen.

  2138. Amen.

  2139. Amen.

  2140. Amen.

  2141. Amen.

  2142. Amen.

  2143. Amen.

  2144. Amen.

  2145. Amen.

  2146. Amen.

  2147. Amen.

  2148. Amen.

  2149. Amen.

  2150. Amen.

  2151. Amen.

  2152. Amen.

  2153. Amen.

  2154. Amen.

  2155. Amen.

  2156. Amen.

  2157. Amen.

  2158. Amen.
