  1. So what I want us to do now is just to move on from that and just to go into what we call our pastoral prayer.

  2. So this is really where I want you to pray with me. I'm not just praying at you or I'm praying to God,

  3. but I want you to pray with me so that we ask our gracious God to work in our lives, in our city, and in our world.

  4. So please, would you bow your heads and just pray with me now.

  5. Now, gracious Father, thank you that today is another day, another morning where you show us incredible grace.

  6. Thank you that before the world was created, you were and are and will be a God of infinite grace.

  7. Thank you that you are enjoying the deepest love with the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit together

  8. in intimate, self-giving, joy-filled, beautiful communion before anything else was created.

  9. Thank you that all creation and all the beauty we see in all that is the fruit of your joyful generosity.

  10. Thank you, you could make everything just a factory standard, but you delight in handcrafting every fingerprint,

  11. every snowflake. You rejoice in giving us fresh grace day after day after day.

  12. And Lord, for some of us who are going through hard times now, some of us who are distracted,

  13. some of us who need comfort and healing and hope, thank you that you loved us so much that you gave,

  14. that you gave your only Son.

  15. And because you've given us everything that we need at the ultimate cost to yourself,

  16. so we want to lean on you today.

  17. We want to trust you today, that you will provide for every need that we have,

  18. spiritual, emotional, physical, relational, because you're a good God.

  19. And Father, I just pray that you would help us in the world that we live in.

  20. Lord, everywhere around us tells us to trust in ourselves, to be self-absorbed.

  21. Father, we pray save us from not being thankful.

  22. Save us from comparing ourselves to everyone else.

  23. Save us from feeling entitled when we are recipients of far more than we could ever deserve.

  24. Save us from holding on to our resources out of fear that we'll not have enough for the future.

  25. Make us a thankful, joyful people.

  26. And Lord, would we be like those people in other countries who see how great the treasure is to know you

  27. above all other things in our lives.

  28. We just want to pray, Father, for our brothers and sisters around the world who are suffering in persecution.

  29. Pray for those in China and those in Turkey that we've heard about and across the Middle East.

  30. We pray, Lord, that they would not just have an easy life,

  31. but we pray that you would be supremely beautiful in their eyes.

  32. That the beauty of Jesus would drive out the fear of man.

  33. Give them courage to stand firm in you.

  34. And would those who persecute them see something more beautiful,

  35. a witness to you that would lead them to repentance and faith.

  36. We pray for the church in Hong Kong.

  37. Pray for Kevin this morning as he speaks at Emmanuel English Church.

  38. Would you anoint his lips, Lord?

  39. Would there be deep unity in the gospel among the churches in Hong Kong?

  40. We want to pray for the local Cantonese speaking church here in Hong Kong.

  41. I pray as I think about Living Grace Christian Church in Yamate.

  42. Thank you that you're drawing newcomers to them, Lord.

  43. We just pray for them as a church that every person there would see themselves as a disciple maker on your mission.

  44. We pray, Lord, that they would have boldness to proclaim the mission you've given them

  45. as they take a mission trip to Macau coming up, Lord.

  46. Would your grace abound to them, we pray.

  47. And Father, I also want to pray in our own community,

  48. and I want to thank you so much for the Mandarin community group in our church, Lord.

  49. I thank you so much that you brought Echo's mom to faith in you during the trip, Lord.

  50. Thank you that's only your grace.

  51. And we want to pray, Father, for Echo and Z as they lead that group,

  52. and for every member in all the struggles and the challenges that they go through in everyday life,

  53. that they would know the height and the breadth and the depth and the width of your love for them.

  54. And they'd deepen in their knowledge of your love.

  55. And they would have spiritual wisdom to know how to serve and love one another

  56. and to reach out to those around them.

  57. Lord, would we be a church which knows how incredible you are

  58. and lives banking our lives on you and seeing your faithfulness day by day.

  59. In Jesus' name, amen.

  60. Can I invite Justin to come and read God's word to us?

  61. Amen.

  62. Amen.

  63. Amen.

  64. The scripture reading comes from 2 Corinthians 8 and 9.

  65. Please follow along in your bulletins or on the screen.

  66. We want you to know, brothers, about the grace of God that has been given among the churches of Macedonia.

  67. For in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed

  68. and a wealth of generosity on their part.

  69. For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means of their own accord,

  70. begging us earnestly for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints.

  71. And this, not as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us.

  72. Accordingly, we urge Titus that he had started so he should complete among you this act of grace.

  73. But as you excel in everything, in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all earnestness,

  74. and in our love for you, see that you excel in this act of grace also.

  75. I say this not as a command, but to prove by the earnestness of others that your love also is genuine.

  76. For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor,

  77. so that you, by his poverty, might become rich.

  78. And in this matter I give my judgment.

  79. This benefits you, who a year ago started not only to do this work, but also to desire to do it.

  80. So now finish doing it as well, so that your readiness in desiring it may be matched by your completing it out of what you have.

  81. For if the readiness is there, it is acceptable according to what a person has, not according to what he does not have.

  82. For I do not mean that others should be eased and you burdened, but that as a matter of fairness,

  83. your abundance at the present time should supply their need, so that their abundance may supply your need,

  84. that there may be fairness.

  85. As it is written, whoever gathered much had nothing left over, and whoever gathered little had no lack.

  86. The point is this.

  87. Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.

  88. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

  89. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times,

  90. you may abound in every good work.

  91. As it is written,

  92. He has distributed freely,

  93. He has given to the poor,

  94. His righteousness endures forever.

  95. He who supplies seed to the sower,

  96. and bread for food,

  97. will supply and multiply your seed for sowing,

  98. and increase the harvest of your righteousness.

  99. You will be enriched in every way,

  100. to be generous in every way,

  101. which through us will produce thanksgiving to God.

  102. For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints,

  103. but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God.

  104. By their approval of this service,

  105. they will glorify God because of your submission that comes from your confession of the gospel of Christ,

  106. and the generosity of your contribution for them and for all others,

  107. while they long for you and pray for you because of the surpassing grace of God upon you.

  108. Thanks be to God for His inexpressible gift.

  109. This is the Word of God.

  110. Thank you so much, Justin.

  111. That's great.

  112. Let me just put this down.

  113. Great.

  114. So we're going through this series,

  115. this kind of challenging series on money and resources.

  116. And we're doing it because we know that in Hong Kong,

  117. this is something that everyone talks about,

  118. but no one really wants to talk about in the church.

  119. And what we've been looking at is actually how money,

  120. as Ed shared earlier,

  121. is one of the greatest idols that we look to to give us status,

  122. to give us comfort,

  123. to give us power,

  124. to give us all the things that we think life is found in.

  125. And yet we've seen,

  126. actually,

  127. that God has got a totally different way of looking at the world,

  128. and He wants us,

  129. with every part of our lives,

  130. including our wallets,

  131. to be people who worship Him in all of life.

  132. And so what we're looking at,

  133. today we're going to finish this series,

  134. and we're going to finish by looking at the Apostle Paul,

  135. and what he says to the church in Corinth.

  136. And some of you may be aware that the Apostle Paul was a church planter.

  137. He was an evangelist.

  138. He went everywhere throughout the Roman Empire sharing the gospel.

  139. Many of you may not know that Paul was also a fundraiser.

  140. That actually,

  141. one thing that Paul saw was actually the gospel in a world that was divided

  142. between Jews and Gentiles on one side,

  143. the rich and the poor.

  144. They would never hang out with each other.

  145. That there were these divisions,

  146. just like in our society,

  147. there were divisions that classified people in different categories.

  148. And what Paul saw was when Jesus died on the cross,

  149. what He did,

  150. He broke down the barriers,

  151. and He brought together a new community made up of every race,

  152. every tribe,

  153. every social economic group.

  154. And as he went around proclaiming this,

  155. he was convinced that this wasn't just a theoretical message.

  156. That as new churches started,

  157. he also saw that in Jerusalem,

  158. there was a Jewish church which was poor.

  159. And then around as he went into the Greek-speaking areas,

  160. and he came to places like Corinth,

  161. he realized it was a wealthier place,

  162. filled with non-Jews.

  163. And for him,

  164. as he went around,

  165. and he saw that actually,

  166. the church in Corinth had a little bit more cash going

  167. than the church in Jerusalem.

  168. And he was convinced,

  169. in fact,

  170. he gave his whole life

  171. to show that actually,

  172. the grace of God doesn't just bring you into Christ's family.

  173. It also means that now,

  174. you are unified with your brothers and sisters across the world,

  175. so that actually,

  176. the love should be poured out,

  177. even crossing boundaries,

  178. from the Gentiles in Corinth

  179. to be given to the Jews

  180. in the city of Jerusalem.

  181. And as people see this counter-cultural gift

  182. that he's calling them to give

  183. to support those churches,

  184. that's a demonstration of the gospel.

  185. And actually,

  186. this passage here,

  187. that we're looking at,

  188. is Paul

  189. basically trying to speak

  190. to this church in Corinth,

  191. which is more wealthy,

  192. and trying to persuade them

  193. to give

  194. to this project

  195. to people that they've never met.

  196. To people that they'll actually

  197. probably get no immediate benefit from.

  198. They're from a different ethnic background.

  199. It's nothing that anyone around them

  200. would ever tell them

  201. was a good idea to do.

  202. And so what we're going to see is

  203. how,

  204. as Paul,

  205. say,

  206. this is actually how the gospel

  207. reshapes entirely

  208. the way that you as the church

  209. live differently

  210. from the people around you.

  211. And so,

  212. that's what we're going to look at.

  213. We're going to look at four things.

  214. And the first thing

  215. we're going to look at

  216. is about this idea of giving

  217. and that the foundation of giving

  218. is grace.

  219. So we're going to start

  220. in verse 9.

  221. And it says,

  222. You know the grace

  223. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  224. He says,

  225. You know the grace

  226. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  227. It's not new to you.

  228. You know the gospel.

  229. You have heard this message

  230. again and again.

  231. And sometimes when you've heard

  232. a message,

  233. you kind of tune out

  234. after a while.

  235. But he says,

  236. This is what you know.

  237. You know

  238. that while Jesus was rich,

  239. yet for your sakes,

  240. he became poor.

  241. And you want to think,

  242. how was Jesus rich?

  243. Well,

  244. Jesus had complete

  245. financial freedom.

  246. Did you know that?

  247. He wasn't waiting for his MPF

  248. to come through

  249. just to retire.

  250. He had all the resources

  251. of heaven.

  252. He owned the cattle

  253. on a thousand hills.

  254. He owed all of creation,

  255. belongs to him.

  256. He doesn't need anything

  257. from anyone.

  258. And more than that,

  259. he also has the highest honor,

  260. the highest status,

  261. and he also has this communion

  262. with his Father

  263. and the Spirit together

  264. of just such deep,

  265. intimate love

  266. that they're completely

  267. self-sufficient

  268. in every single category

  269. that you could ever think of.

  270. They don't need anything.

  271. And you know

  272. when you don't need anything,

  273. what we normally do

  274. is we withdraw into ourselves

  275. and put down our shutters

  276. and then just live happily

  277. by ourselves,

  278. don't we?

  279. But Jesus didn't.

  280. You see,

  281. what he says was

  282. that though he was rich,

  283. yet for your sakes,

  284. and he's speaking

  285. to specific people

  286. in the church in Corinth,

  287. he's going to say,

  288. for your sakes,

  289. Watermark,

  290. for you,

  291. Justin,

  292. Julie,

  293. Ellen,

  294. for you,

  295. he became poor.

  296. Out of the overflow

  297. of his riches,

  298. he came down to earth

  299. and you know

  300. what people said?

  301. They said,

  302. oh,

  303. we'll follow you

  304. and Jesus says,

  305. the Son of Man

  306. has got nowhere

  307. to lay his head.

  308. He came

  309. and he came

  310. as the King of Glory

  311. and that nobody

  312. recognized him.

  313. They ignored him.

  314. They rejected him.

  315. They even came

  316. to a cross

  317. where he was stripped,

  318. naked,

  319. humiliated,

  320. and killed.

  321. And yet he said,

  322. I did that

  323. for your sakes,

  324. for you.

  325. Why?

  326. So that people like us

  327. who are poor

  328. could become

  329. into a relationship

  330. with the rich one

  331. and have access

  332. to him

  333. and all

  334. that is his.

  335. You see,

  336. you know,

  337. the fundamental issue

  338. with poverty

  339. isn't actually

  340. about how much money

  341. you've got

  342. in your bank account.

  343. Did you know that?

  344. It's actually

  345. far more

  346. about the access

  347. that you have

  348. and the opportunities

  349. that you have

  350. to particular

  351. relationships

  352. in your life

  353. because relationships

  354. can give you

  355. access to resources.

  356. So,

  357. for example,

  358. that's why

  359. if you're a student

  360. and you feel like

  361. you don't have much money

  362. in your bank account,

  363. you don't classify

  364. probably as the poor

  365. because

  366. probably,

  367. for most of you,

  368. you may have access

  369. to your parents

  370. and your parents

  371. can keep giving you

  372. more money

  373. if they need to.

  374. So,

  375. what the,

  376. and you know,

  377. the poor

  378. don't have relatives

  379. to bail them out.

  380. They aren't in the right

  381. social circles

  382. to access certain jobs,

  383. to access certain education,

  384. to access certain knowledge.

  385. And what Paul is saying here

  386. is each one of us,

  387. because of our sin

  388. and our rebellion

  389. against God,

  390. we were the poor

  391. because we were cut off

  392. from access

  393. to God himself.

  394. And yet,

  395. God himself

  396. and his richness

  397. has overflowed

  398. to bring you

  399. and me

  400. into this relationship

  401. so that we can get

  402. all of his grace

  403. and abundance

  404. flowing to us.

  405. and it's nothing

  406. we deserve.

  407. That is the grace

  408. that he's talking about.

  409. That,

  410. he says,

  411. if you get that,

  412. if you get that truly,

  413. that is going to fuel

  414. your life

  415. in a different way

  416. and that's going to be

  417. the pattern of your life

  418. in a different way.

  419. And so,

  420. Paul is then going to get

  421. very,

  422. he says,

  423. that's the foundation

  424. of everything

  425. that I'm going to share

  426. with you,

  427. Corinthians.

  428. because now he's going

  429. to get practical

  430. about this collection

  431. that he's trying

  432. to collect.

  433. So,

  434. he then says,

  435. second point,

  436. that grace,

  437. if you get how much

  438. Jesus has loved you,

  439. if you get it,

  440. grace leads to action.

  441. And this is verse 10 to 15,

  442. chapter 8.

  443. He says,

  444. a year ago,

  445. you started to do this work

  446. but also to desire it.

  447. So now finish doing it as well

  448. so that your readiness

  449. in desiring it

  450. may be matched

  451. by completing it out

  452. of what you have

  453. and not out of what

  454. you don't have.

  455. And so,

  456. Paul is saying,

  457. okay,

  458. if you understand

  459. this message of grace,

  460. he had written

  461. to these Corinthians

  462. about a year ago

  463. and he told them,

  464. hey,

  465. can you start putting aside

  466. some of this money

  467. for this collection?

  468. And they had responded

  469. with excitement.

  470. They'd said,

  471. yeah,

  472. they weren't pressurized

  473. into it,

  474. they weren't guilt-tripped

  475. into it,

  476. they'd said,

  477. yeah,

  478. let's do it.

  479. But now a year

  480. has gone past

  481. and that kind of initial

  482. excitement has died.

  483. You know,

  484. they're kind of getting

  485. a little bit of cold feet

  486. at this stage.

  487. And isn't it

  488. just really interesting

  489. that how much

  490. of our giving

  491. is actually based

  492. on emotional appeals?

  493. Like,

  494. even in modern society,

  495. isn't it,

  496. they show you a picture

  497. of a poor,

  498. starving child

  499. and therefore you give

  500. just out of emotion?

  501. Or,

  502. you know,

  503. we do ice bucket challenges

  504. and things like that

  505. where we all get

  506. really excited

  507. for a short mile,

  508. but how lasting

  509. is that

  510. in our hearts

  511. and in our lives?

  512. Like,

  513. how many people,

  514. do you remember

  515. the ice bucket challenge?

  516. Yeah?

  517. Like,

  518. how many people

  519. are still,

  520. like,

  521. really supporting ALS?

  522. Right?

  523. Do you see,

  524. like,

  525. we have this,

  526. and so our society

  527. is more,

  528. it's more gives

  529. out of emotion-based

  530. and out of grace-based.

  531. And for the Corinthians,

  532. they were not feeling

  533. the emotion

  534. at this time

  535. because now

  536. didn't feel like

  537. such a good time

  538. to be able to give

  539. because maybe they promised

  540. quite a bit before,

  541. but now some other stuff

  542. has come in,

  543. their school fees

  544. have increased,

  545. maybe inflation's gone up,

  546. and they're looking

  547. at the amount

  548. and they're going,

  549. oh,

  550. that's actually quite a lot,

  551. I don't think

  552. we can afford that.

  553. And so they're going,

  554. hey,

  555. maybe next year,

  556. when we get a bonus

  557. next year,

  558. then we'll be able

  559. to give,

  560. but maybe not now.

  561. And Paul says,

  562. listen,

  563. God is not about

  564. making your life hard.

  565. He's not trying

  566. to make you poor

  567. while the church

  568. in Jerusalem

  569. gets rich

  570. and has jacuzzis

  571. in their houses.

  572. He's looking at your heart

  573. and he's saying,

  574. just give according

  575. to whatever you have,

  576. don't give according

  577. to what you don't have.

  578. But he says,

  579. don't wait

  580. until you think

  581. you've got enough

  582. to give.

  583. Don't wait

  584. until your bonus comes.

  585. If you're a student,

  586. Kevin mentioned this

  587. last week,

  588. don't wait

  589. until you think,

  590. okay,

  591. when I start earning,

  592. then I'll give.

  593. Because listen,

  594. when you start earning,

  595. then it becomes

  596. so much harder

  597. to give.

  598. He's saying,

  599. now is the time

  600. to give

  601. whatever you have

  602. to give.

  603. And if you don't

  604. feel like giving,

  605. he says,

  606. don't wait

  607. for generosity

  608. to kind of

  609. fill up inside of you

  610. and then I'll give.

  611. No,

  612. he says,

  613. actually just start

  614. giving whatever you can

  615. and then pray

  616. that God would actually

  617. start changing your heart

  618. so you actually,

  619. you desire to give it

  620. like the Corinthians

  621. have begun to desire

  622. to do so.

  623. Because you find

  624. it's like brushing

  625. your teeth,

  626. you know,

  627. you never want to do it

  628. but actually once you

  629. start doing it

  630. and then you stop

  631. brushing your teeth,

  632. you miss it,

  633. right?

  634. That's what he wants

  635. to do in us.

  636. So grace,

  637. if you get how much

  638. Jesus has loved

  639. you personally

  640. and us as a church,

  641. it leads to action.

  642. But thirdly,

  643. grace leads

  644. to a harvest.

  645. I'm going to spend

  646. a bit longer

  647. on this.

  648. It says,

  649. as we go into

  650. chapter 9,

  651. verse 6,

  652. whoever sows sparingly

  653. will also reap sparingly

  654. and whoever sows bountifully

  655. will also reap bountifully.

  656. And later on,

  657. he then says,

  658. whoever supplies seed

  659. to the sower

  660. and bread for food

  661. will supply

  662. and multiply

  663. your seed for sowing

  664. and increase

  665. the harvest

  666. of your righteousness.

  667. Now he's using

  668. a farming analogy.

  669. He's talking about seeds.

  670. I brought some seeds

  671. with me.

  672. Let's put it over here.

  673. Whoops.

  674. There you go.

  675. So,

  676. he's talking farming.

  677. We're not farmers

  678. in Hong Kong,

  679. but I think we probably

  680. can get the analogy.

  681. He's saying that

  682. God in his grace

  683. didn't just give you

  684. salvation.

  685. You know,

  686. the word grace

  687. in Paul's day

  688. was not a spiritual

  689. religious word.

  690. It was a normal word.

  691. It was used

  692. for any ways

  693. that actually

  694. the gifts

  695. that were given.

  696. And so he says,

  697. God has given you

  698. not just his son,

  699. he's also given you stuff.

  700. He's given you seed.

  701. And just like a farmer

  702. has seed to sow,

  703. now why does a farmer

  704. go out to sow seed?

  705. Okay, anyone?

  706. That's not a rhetorical question.

  707. Harvest.

  708. Good.

  709. Someone has done geography

  710. or whatever it is.

  711. Okay.

  712. Yes.

  713. Even in Hong Kong

  714. we understand that,

  715. right?

  716. We've seen it on TV.

  717. And yes,

  718. the farmer sows

  719. to get a harvest.

  720. Now,

  721. a farmer still

  722. has to feed himself

  723. so the farmer

  724. can keep some of the seed

  725. for himself

  726. to be able to feed him

  727. and his family.

  728. But he's saying,

  729. if you sow

  730. a little bit,

  731. how much harvest

  732. are you going to get?

  733. A little bit.

  734. This is not complicated.

  735. Okay.

  736. Okay.

  737. Paul at times

  738. is complicated.

  739. He's not complicated here.

  740. Okay.

  741. So he's saying,

  742. actually,

  743. if the more that I keep

  744. just for myself,

  745. what happens

  746. to the harvest?

  747. It's less, right?

  748. And so actually,

  749. the more that actually

  750. I'm hoarding

  751. thinking I've got to

  752. keep it all for myself,

  753. actually the less

  754. that the fruitfulness

  755. of your life

  756. is going to grow.

  757. And so what he says is,

  758. the more seeds

  759. that you sow,

  760. what's going to happen?

  761. The more harvest

  762. you will have.

  763. Okay, good.

  764. I think we're getting there now,

  765. right?

  766. And so what he's saying is,

  767. like,

  768. we get this.

  769. Okay.

  770. And he's saying,

  771. actually,

  772. that when you give

  773. generously out of your heart,

  774. what God is going to do,

  775. he's not trying to say,

  776. okay,

  777. I want to make you poor

  778. so you have no seed

  779. for yourself,

  780. but he's saying,

  781. actually,

  782. the more that you can be

  783. lavish in giving,

  784. the more harvest

  785. will flow from your life.

  786. And he's saying,

  787. that actually,

  788. God will then

  789. multiply your seed.

  790. He will provide for you

  791. so that you have more

  792. to be able to give.

  793. But what we tend to do

  794. is we go,

  795. okay,

  796. that sounds like

  797. a little bit

  798. of a manipulation technique.

  799. Maybe I'm not going

  800. to have enough.

  801. I've got all these plans

  802. for all the things

  803. that I want to spend

  804. my money on,

  805. right?

  806. And

  807. there's school fees,

  808. there's this,

  809. there's that,

  810. there's Air Jordans

  811. I want to buy,

  812. and there's all this stuff

  813. that I'm thinking.

  814. And so,

  815. what we think is,

  816. oh,

  817. I've got to sacrifice

  818. all of that

  819. and I'm going to lose out

  820. on life.

  821. Because what we believe

  822. is actually

  823. that we don't have

  824. a gracious,

  825. generous,

  826. faithful God.

  827. because sometimes

  828. we feel in our hearts,

  829. we actually think

  830. that if I give

  831. in some way,

  832. that God really

  833. deep in our hearts,

  834. we don't say this,

  835. but actually we believe this,

  836. that deep in our hearts

  837. that God is really

  838. a stingy father

  839. who doesn't really

  840. care for us,

  841. who doesn't really

  842. love us so much.

  843. And Paul wants to say,

  844. do you know the grace

  845. of the Lord Jesus?

  846. That he's given

  847. everything for you.

  848. And he doesn't want us

  849. to give just to burden us.

  850. He wants us to live

  851. generous lives

  852. that will become

  853. cheerful,

  854. joy-filled givers.

  855. Because you test

  856. his faithfulness

  857. like Kevin was talking

  858. last week

  859. and you see

  860. that God is faithful

  861. in abounding

  862. a harvest in your life.

  863. Now,

  864. when I was at university,

  865. I felt God challenge me

  866. in this area

  867. and there was a particular

  868. missions organization

  869. that I felt

  870. he was calling me

  871. to give

  872. and to give far more

  873. than I would ever

  874. normally give.

  875. And so I wrote this check

  876. and I was a student

  877. at the time

  878. and I wasn't a wealthy one

  879. for 500 pounds.

  880. I was like...

  881. And as I was writing it,

  882. I was kind of like,

  883. am I just being an idiot here?

  884. And, you know,

  885. I didn't know

  886. whether I was being an idiot,

  887. but I felt like God

  888. was calling me to do that.

  889. He doesn't always

  890. call me to do that.

  891. But then three weeks later,

  892. I received a letter

  893. from an aunt,

  894. a very distant aunt of mine.

  895. I don't even know

  896. if she's an aunt.

  897. I think she's one

  898. of those relatives

  899. you're not quite sure

  900. where to categorize.

  901. And she'd only ever

  902. occasionally communicated

  903. at Christmas

  904. and given, like,

  905. I think the most generous

  906. was 20 pounds.

  907. Which actually,

  908. in those days,

  909. was not bad.

  910. But then I got this letter

  911. and inside this letter

  912. she said,

  913. hey, I've been going

  914. through some stuff

  915. in my accounts

  916. and I've been...

  917. And I just wondered

  918. if you'd like this.

  919. And I opened the envelope

  920. and there was a check

  921. for 2,000 pounds.

  922. And I went,

  923. my goodness me.

  924. Now,

  925. why am I sharing you

  926. that story?

  927. I'm not sharing it,

  928. so you go away

  929. calculating,

  930. okay,

  931. I put 1,000 in the offering,

  932. that means 4,000.

  933. No.

  934. You see,

  935. I gave not expecting

  936. anything back.

  937. I gave because God

  938. had called me to give.

  939. Not out of guilt,

  940. not out of any kind

  941. of manipulation.

  942. But what I saw

  943. was that God

  944. is gracious

  945. and faithful

  946. in ways that

  947. I didn't even expect

  948. Him to be.

  949. And what He gave me,

  950. and I knew

  951. that from that

  952. He increased my faith

  953. to believe

  954. that actually God

  955. can always provide

  956. for me.

  957. Maybe it's not going

  958. to be exactly

  959. in that way.

  960. In fact,

  961. I've never had that

  962. exactly the same thing

  963. happen again.

  964. But He gives us

  965. in so many ways

  966. so that we can have

  967. more seed to sow

  968. into other people's

  969. lives again.

  970. So generosity

  971. can flow

  972. to more other people.

  973. Paul says it

  974. like this.

  975. He says,

  976. God is able

  977. to make all grace,

  978. all grace,

  979. that's a lot of grace,

  980. abound to you.

  981. Abound.

  982. Is that a little?

  983. No, abound is a lot.

  984. So that having

  985. all sufficiency,

  986. now that word means

  987. all contentment,

  988. all you need,

  989. not all you want,

  990. by the way.

  991. He's not saying

  992. the Ferrari's coming,

  993. right?

  994. But having all

  995. that you need,

  996. all contentment,

  997. at all times,

  998. that's a lot of the time,

  999. in all things,

  1000. that's a lot of things,

  1001. that you may abound

  1002. in every good work.

1003. You see where it's going?

  1004. It's going outwards.

1005. And then in verse 11,

  1006. He says this.

  1007. You will be enriched

  1008. in every way

  1009. to be generous

  1010. in every way

  1011. which through us

  1012. will produce

  1013. thanksgiving to God.

  1014. Now this is

  1015. an interesting passage.

  1016. Do you know

  1017. what He's actually

  1018. saying here?

  1019. I'm going to be

  1020. a little controversial maybe.

  1021. God wants you

  1022. to be rich.

  1023. Did you know that?

  1024. His call

  1025. for generosity

  1026. is because God

1027. wants you to be rich.

  1028. In fact,

1029. let me even make it stronger.

  1030. Jesus died

1031. so that you can be rich

  1032. individually

  1033. and as a community.

  1034. Isn't that exactly

  1035. what He said

  1036. in chapter 8

  1037. right at the beginning?

  1038. He said,

  1039. for your sake

  1040. He became poor.

  1041. Why?

  1042. So that through

  1043. by His poverty

  1044. you might become

  1045. rich.

  1046. Now some of you

1047. are getting a little nervous

  1048. at this point.

  1049. Before you think

  1050. I'm preaching

  1051. the prosperity gospel,

  1052. I am preaching

  1053. the prosperity gospel

1054. but not the prosperity gospel

  1055. that says

  1056. give your money

  1057. to the church

  1058. and God will triple

  1059. what you want

  1060. and what you give

  1061. guaranteed.

  1062. That's not what I'm preaching

  1063. because think

  1064. what is your definition

  1065. of rich?

  1066. If you're anything

  1067. like me

  1068. the first things

1069. that come into my mind

  1070. are like millions

  1071. in your bank account,

  1072. two Ferraris

  1073. on your front drive,

  1074. a personal yacht,

  1075. right?

  1076. That's what I think

  1077. when I think

  1078. the word rich.

  1079. Anyone like me?

  1080. Do you know

  1081. that is the most

  1082. narrow definition

  1083. of rich

  1084. you could ever imagine?

1085. Like just think about it.

  1086. How many wealthy people,

  1087. Fiona used to work

  1088. in a law firm

  1089. with some very high

  1090. wealthy individuals

  1091. who were getting divorced.

  1092. Let me tell you,

1093. when you get to know

  1094. people's lives

1095. there is so much tragedy

  1096. and poverty

  1097. in their hearts.

1098. Like so many wealthy people

  1099. are lonely,

  1100. insecure,

  1101. fearful.

  1102. Often the pursuit

  1103. of wealth

  1104. destroys the very

  1105. relationships

  1106. that we crave.

  1107. Money and possessions

  1108. by itself

  1109. isn't rich.

  1110. You know,

  1111. Hong Kong is one

  1112. of the wealthiest places

  1113. on the planet

  1114. and yet it's one

  1115. of the most stressed.

  1116. That's emotional poverty,

  1117. right?

  1118. Our relationships

  1119. are strained.

  1120. That's relational poverty.

  1121. We live for stuff

  1122. that never satisfies.

  1123. That's living

  1124. with purpose poverty.

1125. I know you could go

  1126. on and on

  1127. and yet Paul

  1128. wants to bring us

  1129. just like actually

1130. when we were in Turkey

  1131. we saw these people

  1132. as Ellen and Phoebe

  1133. were sharing

  1134. who had left everything

  1135. who saw much

  1136. they had left

  1137. and yet

  1138. you saw in them

  1139. this faith

  1140. where you went away

  1141. saying wow

  1142. we have so much

  1143. they have so little

1144. but they are so rich.

  1145. in faith.

  1146. And Paul

1147. does the same thing here

1148. and I'm going to flip back

  1149. right to the beginning

  1150. of chapter 8 verse 1

1151. because he's going to give

  1152. an example

1153. of what it looks like

  1154. to be rich.

  1155. He says

  1156. in a severe test

  1157. of affliction

  1158. their abundance

  1159. of joy

  1160. and their extreme poverty

  1161. have overflowed

  1162. in a wealth

  1163. of generosity

  1164. on their part

  1165. begging us earnestly

  1166. for the favor

  1167. of taking part

  1168. in the relief

  1169. of the saints.

  1170. Times are hard

  1171. for the Macedonian churches

1172. these are a little bit

  1173. north in Greece

  1174. they're being persecuted

  1175. on the outside

  1176. and suffering poverty

  1177. on the inside

1178. like many of the Turkish

  1179. believers

  1180. and poverty

  1181. is not pleasant

  1182. the Bible doesn't

  1183. make poverty

  1184. ever a goal

  1185. that we should detain

  1186. but here

  1187. what they're doing

  1188. you know when you're

1189. going through a hard time

  1190. where do you tend

  1191. to focus?

  1192. just on ourselves

  1193. right?

  1194. If you're like me

  1195. that's what we do

  1196. and they're normally

  1197. going hey now's not

1198. a good time to help out

  1199. just wait

1200. for a little bit later

  1201. but because they knew

  1202. the richness

  1203. of their father

  1204. who was so generous

  1205. and they knew

  1206. who could provide

  1207. for them

  1208. that he was faithful

  1209. Paul says

  1210. they had abundance

  1211. they had wealth

  1212. they were poor

  1213. but they were rich

  1214. and you see

1215. what they were rich in?

  1216. they're rich in

  1217. joy

  1218. you know they're going

1219. we've only got two dollars

  1220. and like one

  1221. we've got to keep

  1222. for our family

  1223. but can we possibly

  1224. Paul

  1225. like is it possible

1226. for us to be able

  1227. to have the grace

  1228. that's what the word

  1229. favor mean

  1230. the grace

  1231. the privilege

1232. of being able to share

  1233. with our brothers

  1234. in need

  1235. because we see

1236. what a joy that is

  1237. and they're going

  1238. hey let's see

1239. guys is there any other way

1240. that we could kind of

  1241. I know we've not got much

  1242. but could we just

  1243. give anything more

1244. maybe we can go busking

  1245. on the streets

  1246. I don't know

  1247. what can we do

1248. so that we can actually

  1249. bless these guys

  1250. there's going to be

  1251. an opportunity cost

1252. if we actually miss out

  1253. on this chance

  1254. to sow grace

1255. to our brothers and sisters

  1256. in Jerusalem

  1257. I don't know whether

1258. like when you get a pay rise

  1259. the first thought

  1260. in your mind is

  1261. wow

  1262. what an opportunity

  1263. I can to save

  1264. or spend more

  1265. or wow

  1266. what an opportunity

1267. that I can give more

  1268. but that's the church

  1269. in Macedonia

  1270. and Paul is saying

  1271. it's not about

  1272. the amount of money

  1273. because like they're poor

  1274. I mean they're not giving

1275. exactly very much at all

  1276. but he's looking

  1277. at the heart

  1278. and he's saying

  1279. they've just understood grace

  1280. and it's just flowing

  1281. out of them

  1282. in a powerful way

  1283. you know

  1284. I grew up in a family

1285. which was tight on finances

1286. and I learned to count

  1287. my pennies

  1288. and when it comes

  1289. to giving gifts

  1290. I'm usually thinking

1291. how cheap can I go

  1292. before I look cheap

  1293. you know that

1294. but I went on a mission trip

  1295. to India

1296. and I met some nuns

  1297. in desperate poverty

1298. and yet they were filled

  1299. with this incredible joy

1300. and they'd cook us breakfast

  1301. and I found out

  1302. they were actually

  1303. cooking pretty much

  1304. most of what they

1305. most of what they had

  1306. so they were actually

  1307. taking less for themselves

1308. so that we could enjoy it

  1309. and I was feeling

1310. a bit guilty about that

  1311. because you know

  1312. we have so much

  1313. but actually for them

  1314. it was a joy

  1315. it was a privilege

  1316. and I realized

1317. wow in so many ways

  1318. I'm actually so poor

1319. and these guys are so rich

  1320. because they've understood

  1321. God's grace

  1322. and Paul himself

  1323. this is amazing

  1324. Paul is blown away

  1325. by this as well

  1326. and he says

  1327. they gave

1328. they didn't give out of guilt

  1329. they didn't give

1330. even because Paul told them

  1331. to give

1332. they give first to the Lord

  1333. they first said

1334. God what's going to please you

1335. we actually want to obey you

1336. and then out of that

  1337. they gave

1338. do we want to be

  1339. a rich community

  1340. okay

  1341. good

  1342. I was worried there

  1343. for a minute

1344. I thought we might have

1345. to go a little bit longer

1346. do we want to have

  1347. a greater impact

  1348. in other people's lives

  1349. than just eating

  1350. the own seed

  1351. for ourselves

  1352. God wants to change

  1353. our hearts

  1354. not so that it's

  1355. guilt driven

  1356. but so we become

  1357. cheerful givers

1358. in all of our life

  1359. grace leads to action

1360. grace leads to a harvest

  1361. grace leads to thanksgiving

  1362. he says

  1363. for the ministry

  1364. of this service

  1365. is not only supplying

1366. the needs of the saints

  1367. but is also overflowing

  1368. in many thanksgivings

  1369. to God

  1370. ultimately

  1371. a generous heart

  1372. is not just about

1373. you having a richer life

  1374. or even about

  1375. other people

  1376. being blessed

  1377. through it

  1378. it's about

  1379. the glory

  1380. of God

  1381. it's about

  1382. God is glorified

  1383. when his people

  1384. are so satisfied

  1385. in him

  1386. that they can hold

  1387. loosely the stuff

  1388. that they have

  1389. and be generous

  1390. with it

  1391. when they see

  1392. that God is calling

  1393. them

  1394. and they see

  1395. needs around

  1396. and as we are

  1397. thankful for God's

  1398. grace in our life

  1399. that overflows

  1400. and what Paul

  1401. is saying here is

  1402. when the Corinthians

  1403. were to give

  1404. to their needy

  1405. brothers and sisters

  1406. what would be

  1407. happening there

  1408. was God

  1409. has given them

  1410. grace

  1411. he's given them

  1412. spiritual grace

  1413. he's given them

  1414. physical grace

  1415. and actually

  1416. as his grace

  1417. then comes and works

  1418. in their heart

  1419. and changes their heart

  1420. it then overflows

  1421. with them giving

  1422. a gift of grace

  1423. to this people

  1424. in Jerusalem

  1425. and when they

  1426. receive the grace

  1427. what happens

  1428. will happen to them

  1429. is they will realize

  1430. in a deep way

  1431. wow our God

  1432. is so gracious

  1433. through you

  1434. and so as their

  1435. faith increases

  1436. it releases them

  1437. to thank God

  1438. that they can see

  1439. their God provides

  1440. and he's provided

  1441. through the Corinthians

  1442. and what that does

  1443. it creates

  1444. them to then

  1445. pray

  1446. for their

  1447. church over there

  1448. so deeper unity

  1449. amongst these people

  1450. who would be divided

  1451. normally occurs

  1452. and through that

  1453. you say

  1454. only the gospel

  1455. can do that

  1456. and Jesus

  1457. gets all the glory

  1458. you know

  1459. my wife is expecting

  1460. in October

  1461. that's the right response

1462. and a number of you

  1463. have actually been

  1464. just really generous

  1465. towards us

  1466. in offering us

  1467. baby stuff

  1468. they've promised it

  1469. so I'm

  1470. I'm expecting it

  1471. you know

  1472. Paul said

  1473. action

  1474. no

  1475. but actually

  1476. one of the things

  1477. like I was just

  1478. talking with Fiona

  1479. just the other day

  1480. and she was

  1481. she was saying

  1482. actually

  1483. you know

  1484. the amount of money

  1485. that we could save

  1486. from that

  1487. how about if we

  1488. actually then use that

  1489. to be able to

  1490. to give to some

  1491. missionary friends

  1492. in France

  1493. so that we can

  1494. bless them

  1495. and so

  1496. as I was thinking

  1497. about

  1498. I was thinking

  1499. that's so much

  1500. what this is

  1501. that actually

  1502. as somebody

  1503. shows generosity

  1504. us

  1505. then we can show

  1506. generosity

  1507. to somebody else

  1508. and then they

  1509. through their ministry

  1510. will be speaking

  1511. and releasing grace

  1512. into other people's life

1513. and as you see that

  1514. the impact

  1515. of someone's generosity

  1516. right the way

  1517. over in Hong Kong

  1518. can impact

  1519. all the way

  1520. into France

  1521. and in somebody's life

1522. that I have no idea

  1523. who they are

  1524. may result in praise

  1525. and thanksgiving

  1526. to God

  1527. isn't that amazing

1528. to be part of something

  1529. so much bigger

  1530. than yourself

  1531. that's the harvest

  1532. God's talking about

1533. so what do we do

  1534. with this

  1535. do you see

  1536. when you get grace

  1537. it changes everything

  1538. and first I think

  1539. as I've just thought

  1540. about this

  1541. and realized

  1542. for myself

  1543. but none of us

  1544. are as generous

  1545. as we should be

  1546. I mean let's just

  1547. let's just be real

  1548. and maybe it's not

  1549. just financial

  1550. it's maybe other areas

  1551. none of us

  1552. are rich in faith

  1553. and love

  1554. and joy

1555. as God wants us to be

  1556. and so we need

  1557. to repent first

  1558. God

  1559. I often live

  1560. as if you're not

  1561. as gracious

  1562. as you really are

  1563. I need to repent

  1564. you're not as generous

  1565. and I haven't

  1566. I haven't proved

  1567. you as faithful

  1568. by being giving

  1569. so that the seed

  1570. of the harvest

  1571. can come

  1572. but the amazing

  1573. thing is this

  1574. and this just blows

  1575. me away

1576. you know when it says

  1577. the grace of the

  1578. Lord Jesus Christ

  1579. you know it

  1580. when did he give

  1581. his grace to us

  1582. through dying

  1583. on the cross

  1584. while we were

  1585. still poor

  1586. you see

  1587. Jesus meets us

  1588. right where we are

1589. with all of our fears

  1590. all of our insecurities

  1591. all of our questions

  1592. that we have

1593. some of you may have

  1594. a lot of questions

1595. he knows where we are

  1596. right now

  1597. as a church

  1598. as individuals

  1599. for some people

  1600. Jesus may be going

  1601. to you

1602. like the rich young ruler

  1603. give everything away

  1604. but I suspect

  1605. for most of us

  1606. that's not what

  1607. Jesus is saying

  1608. Jesus is actually

  1609. probably just saying

1610. I want just to take

  1611. one step

  1612. if you're like me

  1613. I want to change

1614. from zero to a hundred

  1615. overnight

1616. and I want everyone else

  1617. to change the same

1618. but God's not like that

  1619. he's so gracious

  1620. with us

  1621. he's so gentle

  1622. with us

  1623. he leads us

  1624. step by step

  1625. so at the end

  1626. of this series

  1627. as we've been talking

  1628. about the grip

1629. of money on our hearts

1630. I want to ask you

  1631. what's the area

  1632. that God is calling

  1633. you to respond in

  1634. what's the area

  1635. that he's highlighting

  1636. in your life

  1637. he's not going to

1638. give you a hundred things

  1639. he'll probably just

  1640. give you one thing

1641. it may be a very

  1642. small thing

  1643. it may be that

  1644. you actually just need

  1645. to start talking

  1646. about money

  1647. with your spouse

1648. or with your community group

  1649. it may be that

  1650. actually he's calling

1651. you to buy fewer clothes

1652. and give the money away

  1653. it may be just

1654. calling you to find out

  1655. about the needs

  1656. that are around

1657. because when you find out

  1658. about needs

  1659. then you can be

  1660. thinking about them

  1661. and praying about them

  1662. and asking God

1663. how do you want us

  1664. to be generous

  1665. but grace leads

  1666. to action

  1667. and God does not

1668. want us to go away

  1669. from this series

  1670. just saying

1671. oh that was a nice series

  1672. and I'm personally

  1673. convinced

  1674. but God does also

  1675. not want you

  1676. to go away

  1677. inspired for 24 hours

  1678. on an emotional base

1679. okay I need to give

1680. and then three days later

  1681. it's like

  1682. gone

1683. Jesus wants to meet you

  1684. where you are today

  1685. and to bring you

  1686. to a pattern

  1687. of your life

  1688. where there is

  1689. regular

  1690. consistent

  1691. wholehearted

  1692. life transformed

  1693. bit by bit

  1694. transformation

  1695. of your wallet

  1696. transformation

  1697. so that grace

  1698. and generosity

  1699. is characteristic

  1700. of us

  1701. as a church

  1702. and so I think

  1703. the first place

  1704. that we start

  1705. I'm going to close

  1706. with this

  1707. is to identify

  1708. who God is calling

  1709. you to give to

  1710. there are a thousand

  1711. charities out there

  1712. who ask you

  1713. for your money

  1714. there are so many

  1715. needs out there

  1716. we wonder

  1717. oh like

1718. do I just give out

  1719. of guilt

  1720. but actually

  1721. I think God

  1722. wants to cultivate

  1723. a heart of generosity

  1724. in four things

  1725. here

  1726. these are four things

  1727. the Bible calls us

  1728. to give to

  1729. the family

  1730. the local church

  1731. other gospel ministry

  1732. and mission

  1733. and the poor

  1734. and the needy

  1735. maybe you're already

  1736. giving to a lot

  1737. of different ways

  1738. maybe you need

  1739. to just talk

  1740. with Julie

  1741. or Jeremy

  1742. or one of the

  1743. mission partners

  1744. that we've started

  1745. this funds

  1746. that we're talking

  1747. about

  1748. have you got

  1749. the other slide

  1750. the three funds

  1751. that we're looking

  1752. at as a church

  1753. compassion

  1754. for the needs

  1755. of those

  1756. within the church

  1757. missional justice

  1758. for those

  1759. outside the church

  1760. and the supporting

  1761. of mission work

  1762. that's going on

  1763. around Asia

  1764. maybe you need

  1765. to just find out

  1766. from the Filipino

  1767. community

  1768. or from other

  1769. communities

  1770. just what are the

  1771. needs

  1772. how can I start

  1773. praying

  1774. but let me finish

  1775. by saying this

  1776. some of us

  1777. are very generous

  1778. financially

  1779. but we often

  1780. struggle to give

  1781. with our time

  1782. because time

  1783. is very precious

  1784. but you know

  1785. Jesus didn't just

  1786. write a check

  1787. to us

  1788. he didn't say

  1789. hey there's your needs

  1790. let me send you

  1791. like a little gift

  1792. in an envelope

  1793. Jesus came

  1794. and he didn't

  1795. stay distant

  1796. from you

  1797. he didn't stay

  1798. attached from you

  1799. he knows about

  1800. where your heart is

  1801. and he came

  1802. down to you

  1803. to cross

  1804. every barrier

  1805. so that you

  1806. might be his

  1807. wherever you are

  1808. today

  1809. he's not a stingy

  1810. God

  1811. he's a gracious

  1812. God

  1813. he comes to you

  1814. today

  1815. so may we be

  1816. that rich church

1817. may we be a church

  1818. that knows

  1819. how gracious

  1820. he is

  1821. let's pray

  1822. what I'd love you

  1823. to do is just

  1824. think for yourself

  1825. I don't want you

1826. to think out of guilt

  1827. I don't want you

  1828. to think out of

  1829. just even a pressure

  1830. but say God

  1831. what are you calling

  1832. me to do

1833. how do you want me

  1834. where in my heart

  1835. do I see you

  1836. as a stingy God

  1837. where are you

  1838. calling me to

  1839. step out in faith

  1840. and maybe you

  1841. would like to

  1842. come up for prayer

  1843. like just

  1844. during this time

  1845. we're going to

  1846. play the next song

  1847. maybe you just

  1848. want to respond

  1849. actually by coming

  1850. up and asking

  1851. for prayer

  1852. prayer

  1853. this is a hard

  1854. topic

  1855. but Jesus is so

  1856. glorious

  1857. he can provide

  1858. for everything

  1859. father we pray

  1860. for our hearts

  1861. thank you that you

  1862. are generous

  1863. to us

  1864. thank you for all

  1865. that you've given

  1866. us

  1867. thank you we don't

  1868. have to live

  1869. guilty lives

  1870. but you want us

  1871. to live generous

  1872. lives

  1873. please show us

  1874. what that means

  1875. please help us

  1876. not to live

  1877. under a pressure

  1878. but actually

  1879. out of a joy

  1880. to trust you

  1881. and prove you

  1882. faithful

  1883. to prove you

  1884. generous

  1885. to prove you

  1886. more abundant

  1887. than we could

  1888. ever imagine

  1889. would that be

  1890. what characterizes

  1891. us as a church

  1892. I pray

  1893. in Jesus name

  1894. Amen
