  1. Okay, well, great to see everybody. If you don't know me, my name is Kevin, one of the leaders here, and we're going to spend some time praying together.

  2. One of the things Jeremy just mentioned is as a church, we love to pray, and prayer is such an important part of everything that we do.

  3. And when you come to church on Sunday, we don't just come to run through a program. We come to encounter the living God, and one of the ways we do that is through prayer.

  4. And so will you join me as we pray together? And I know I say this often, but I want to encourage you to really listen and to agree and to join in in this time of prayer.

  5. This isn't just me praying, this is us as a church coming before our Father. And so let's pray together.

  6. Gracious Father, it really is such a joy and a privilege to gather together to praise you and to adore you, to hear from you and to encounter you again this morning.

  7. Gracious Father, you are liberating truth. You who are sovereign and all-powerful, you who are forgiving and welcoming, we love you and we need you.

  8. Father, we pray that we will continue to grow in our knowledge and our understanding of who you are and your truth.

  9. Lord, may we never rest on a system of doctrine or just have head knowledge, a system of religion that does not bring us closer to you and your ways,

  10. that does not help us to turn from our self-centeredness and sin, and God rejoice all the more in your goodness and grace.

  11. Father, we confess how easy it is to come to you when we are in need or in trouble or distress or when we are worried about things.

  12. We find it very easy to run to you, but Father, we pray that you will help us to not only come to you in those times and then go our own way,

  13. but to walk in your way day in and day out when life is good and when it's tough.

  14. Father, forgive us this sin, we pray, and help us to never fail to come to you who are full of grace,

  15. you who are the friend of sinners, you who love at all times,

  16. you who are so familiar with each and every temptation and weakness, and yet God without sin.

  17. Father, help us to never limit our devotions to particular seasons or days of the week,

  18. but to love you each and every day.

  19. Help us to never simply look the part or act Christianly on Sundays or certain occasions,

  20. but to follow you and walk with you in each and every season of life.

  21. I really pray for your grace and to help us in this regard, Lord.

  22. Father, this morning we confess that our hearts are heavy when we consider the state of the world,

  23. whether it's political fighting across nations that has real consequences for so many ordinary citizens,

  24. whether it's civil wars that are raging, often forgotten, unreported,

  25. God, whether it's immigrants fleeing to countries looking for a safe place to call home and yet seldom welcomed anywhere.

  26. Father, we think of many homes even here in Hong Kong and around the world in which there is so little joy,

  27. little love, there is pain, there is bitterness, there is unforgiveness, there is hurt.

  28. Father, we're brokenhearted when we think and hear of attacks that bring terror and fear,

  29. when we hear of floods and monsoons and storms that ravage homes and take lives.

  30. Father, this morning we mourn with a heavy heart the presence of sin in our lives and in our world,

  31. and we long for heaven.

  32. Jesus, you were so right when you said that the life apart from you,

  33. while it looks appealing and self-fulfilling, it really does end in heartache and destruction.

  34. And so God, while we are grateful for progress in society, for increased freedoms,

  35. and the acknowledgement of people's liberties and rights,

  36. Father, we acknowledge that we are not more happier or content society.

  37. We acknowledge our need for you.

  38. Humble our proud.

  39. Help us, God, not to walk our own path, but to follow you.

  40. Jesus, come and have your way, we pray.

  41. Come, Lord Jesus, come.

  42. Come soon, we pray, God.

  43. Come and bring your kingdom to our city and to our hearts, Lord.

  44. Lord, we need you, Jesus.

  45. Come and have your way in our lives, we pray.

  46. In your patient and long-suffering name, amen.

  47. Amen.

  48. Let's listen to the reading of God's word.

  49. Thanks, Victoria.

  50. The scripture reading comes from Matthew chapter 7.

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  51. Please follow along in your bulletins or on the screen.

  52. Enter by the narrow gate.

  53. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction,

  54. and those who enter by it are many.

  55. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life,

  56. and those who find it are few.

  57. Beware of false prophets who come to you in sheep's clothing,

  58. but inwardly are ravenous wolves.

  59. You will recognize them by their fruits.

  60. Are grapes gathered from farm bushes or fixed from thistles?

  61. So every healthy tree bears good fruit,

  62. but the deceased tree bears bad fruit.

  63. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit,

  64. nor can a deceased tree bear good fruit.

  65. Every tree that does not bear good fruit

  66. is cut down and thrown into the fire.

  67. Thus you will recognize them by their fruits.

  68. Not everyone who says to me,

  69. Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven,

  70. but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

  71. On that day, many will say to me,

  72. Lord, Lord, do we not prophesy in your name

  73. and cast out demons in your name

  74. and do many mighty works in your name?

  75. And then will I declare to them,

  76. I never knew you.

  77. Depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.

  78. Everyone then who hears these words of mine

  79. and thus them will be like a wise man

  80. who built his house on the rock.

  81. And the rain fell,

  82. and the floods came,

  83. and the winds blew and beat on that house,

  84. but it did not fall,

  85. because it had been founded on the rock.

  86. And everyone who hears these words of mine

  87. and does not do them

  88. will be like a foolish man

  89. who built his house on the sand.

  90. And the rain fell,

  91. and the floods came,

  92. and the winds blew and beat against that house,

  93. and it fell,

  94. and great was the fall of it.

  95. And when Jesus finished these sayings,

  96. the crowds were astonished at his teaching,

  97. for he was teaching them

  98. as one who had authority

  99. and not at the scribes.

  100. This is the word of God.

  101. Thank you, Victoria.

  102. Okay.

  103. Well, if you have been coming to Watermark for a while,

  104. you will recognize this picture.

  105. Not that one.

  106. The next one.

  107. The Upside Down Kingdom.

  108. And we have been doing this preaching series

  109. for the last six months.

  110. We started on the 9th of December last year

  111. when we looked at the beginning of Matthew's Gospel,

  112. and we looked at how the arrival of Jesus

  113. led up to Christmas,

  114. and then after Christmas,

  115. we just kept on going,

  116. and we met John the Baptist in chapter 3,

  117. and then Jesus eventually in chapter 4.

  118. And Jesus comes on the scene,

  119. and he says,

  120. Repent,

  121. for the kingdom of heaven is here,

  122. therefore follow me.

  123. And he calls these people to follow him,

  124. and then we went into the Sermon on the Mount,

  125. and we just kept on going.

  126. And so for six months,

  127. we've been looking at Matthew's Gospel,

  128. and today is the final episode.

  129. Today it comes to a conclusion.

  130. Now, just so you know,

  131. sidebar,

  132. next week,

  133. Tobin Miller,

  134. who is the founding pastor of Watermark,

  135. is going to be preaching here,

  136. and so we're looking forward to having him.

  137. Yes.

  138. And I have never met Tobin.

  139. I'm looking forward to meeting him this week.

  140. And then after that,

  141. we are going to preach through the book of Habakkuk

  142. for three weeks,

  143. and then Haggai for four weeks,

  144. and then after the summer,

  145. we're going to do Revelation

  146. from September to December.

  147. So that's our preaching schedule

  148. for the rest of the year.

  149. Okay.

  150. Now, before we dive into our passage today,

  151. I want us to step back

  152. and just to consider

  153. the structure

  154. and the flow of thought

  155. through Matthew's Gospel,

  156. because it's going to help us feel

  157. the force of the passage

  158. that we're looking at today.

  159. And so,

  160. Matthew's Gospel

  161. is structured

  162. very deliberately.

  163. In fact,

  164. all the biblical writers

  165. wrote their books

  166. or their literature

  167. very deliberately.

  168. And

  169. the way that Matthew

  170. has written it

  171. is in order to convey something

  172. or to let us know

  173. something about Jesus.

  174. If you're new to the Bible,

  175. you may sometimes

  176. read the Gospels

  177. and think,

  178. why does it in the one Gospel

  179. it seems like Jesus says this

  180. and then does that?

  181. But if you read another Gospel

  182. like Luke or John or Mark,

  183. it seems like

  184. he first does that

  185. and then afterwards

  186. he says this.

  187. In other words,

  188. sometimes the order

  189. seems the wrong way around,

  190. and that can be confusing.

  191. And the reason is

  192. because the biblical writers

  193. weren't writing

  194. a purely chronological history,

  195. A,

  196. then B,

  197. then C.

  198. They've structured

  199. their writing

  200. in such a way

  201. as to communicate

  202. a message

  203. and to tell us

  204. something about Jesus,

  205. not just what happened,

  206. but why it happened as well.

  207. So in English,

  208. we've got this phrase

  209. where we say

  210. the medium is the message.

  211. In other words,

  212. if you're communicating something,

  213. the way that you communicated

  214. actually communicates

  215. the message

  216. as much as the words

  217. themselves.

  218. I'll give you

  219. a silly example.

  220. Let's say I

  221. write a love letter

  222. to my wife

  223. and I find some

  224. tissue on the floor

  225. and I unravel it

  226. and I scribble on there

  227. I love you

  228. and I give that to her.

  229. Or if I take the time

  230. to make a beautiful card

  231. and then write

  232. the same words,

  233. one of those

  234. is going to communicate

  235. something a whole lot

  236. differently than the other.

  237. Because the medium

  238. is the message.

  239. The way that something

  240. is communicated

  241. communicates as much

  242. as the actual words

  243. themselves.

  244. Now this is what's happening

  245. in the Gospels.

  246. And so Matthew,

  247. the way that he structured

  248. his Gospels,

  249. there's seven parts to it,

  250. kind of like seven episodes

  251. in a series.

  252. There's an introduction,

  253. chapters one to three,

  254. in which he tells us

  255. that Jesus

  256. is the true and better

  257. Abraham,

  258. Moses and David.

  259. When you read

  260. the opening chapters

  261. of Matthew,

  262. it's all about

  263. Abraham,

  264. Moses and David.

  265. And he's communicating,

  266. he's telling us something,

  267. that all three of these

  268. constantly point to Jesus.

  269. Jesus is the fulfillment

  270. of all of that.

  271. And then there's

  272. a concluding

  273. kind of section

  274. or paragraph

  275. at the bottom,

  276. and that's how

  277. Jesus is the true

  278. and better Passover.

  279. He's the lamb that died

  280. for the sins of the world,

  281. but he didn't stay dead,

  282. he came alive again.

  283. And in between,

  284. these opening and closing

  285. paragraphs or sections

  286. are five unique sections.

  287. And they resemble

  288. the five books of Moses

  289. in the Old Testament.

  290. And each one of these sections

  291. has a similar structure

  292. and feel to it.

  293. It starts off

  294. with some narrative.

  295. Jesus went here,

  296. he did this miracle,

  297. he encountered these people,

  298. et cetera.

  299. And then it ends off

  300. with the body of teaching.

  301. And the last sentence

  302. in each one of these

  303. five sections

  304. is the same sentence.

  305. It's kind of like Matthew's,

  306. he's carefully

  307. constructing something.

  308. In other words,

  309. he's saying,

  310. let's think about this section

  311. for a moment.

  312. And he does a whole thing there.

  313. And then he moves on,

  314. says,

  315. now I want you to consider

  316. this part about Jesus' life.

  317. And now I want you

  318. to consider this part.

  319. The reason I'm telling you this

  320. is for the last six months

  321. we've focused on

  322. the introduction

  323. and the first section.

  324. And so,

  325. for six months

  326. we've been going through

  327. Matthew's Gospel

  328. and we've seen,

  329. we've met Jesus

  330. in the wilderness,

  331. we've met him

  332. being tempted

  333. by the devil,

  334. his baptism,

  335. et cetera, et cetera.

  336. He arrives in Galilee,

  337. he says,

  338. follow me,

  339. the kingdom of heaven

  340. is at hand.

  341. That's all the narrative.

  342. Then he goes into

  343. this body of teaching

  344. which is called

  345. the Sermon on the Mount.

  346. That's right.

  347. And we've been there

  348. for about four or five months

  349. and we've paused

  350. in a couple of places

  351. and we've looked at

  352. how Jesus speaks

  353. about a mission

  354. and evangelism.

  355. He talks about

  356. the Beatitudes.

  357. He talks about prayer.

  358. He talks about money.

  359. He talks about

  360. all these things.

  361. And in the Sermon on the Mount,

  362. he's now unpacking

  363. and explaining

  364. what he said

  365. in the wilderness

  366. which is,

  367. follow me

  368. for the kingdom

  369. of heaven is at hand.

  370. He's showing

  371. what life in the kingdom

  372. looks like.

  373. He's showing

  374. what does it mean

  375. when you follow him

  376. and say,

  377. yes, okay,

  378. I'll follow you.

  379. And the Sermon on the Mount

  380. is his unpacking

  381. of what this kingdom,

  382. this new kingdom,

  383. looks like.

  384. And it turns out

  385. it's an upside down

  386. kind of kingdom.

  387. It's a kingdom

  388. in which blessed

  389. are the poor in spirit

  390. for they inherit the earth.

  391. Blessed are those

  392. that mourn

  393. more so

  394. than those

  395. that don't.

  396. And so from chapter 4

  397. onwards,

  398. we've been following Jesus

  399. and he's been

  400. following his narrative,

  401. following his teaching.

  402. And now,

  403. we get to the end.

  404. And we get to the very

  405. final passage.

  406. And the passage of Scripture

  407. we're looking at today

  408. is kind of the conclusion

  409. to this first section.

  410. And Matthew

  411. has deliberately

  412. structured his gospel

  413. to come to this passage today

  414. and like a great trial lawyer

  415. before the jury

  416. is saying,

  417. okay,

  418. you've heard all the evidence.

  419. You've met Jesus

  420. in the wilderness.

  421. You heard what he had to say.

  422. You've listened to his teaching

  423. about prayer.

  424. You've listened to his teaching

  425. about money.

  426. You've listened to everything

  427. he has to say.

  428. And like a trial lawyer,

  429. he's coming with

  430. this closing argument.

  431. And this is what he's saying.

  432. Now,

  433. how are you going to respond?

  434. You've heard about

  435. everything I've seen,

  436. I've said.

  437. You've seen how

  438. I handle temptation.

  439. You've seen how

  440. I'm the fulfillment

  441. of the Old Testament.

  442. You see how

  443. all the law and the prophets

  444. come to me.

  445. Now,

  446. how are you going to respond?

  447. What are you going to do

  448. with everything you've heard

  449. and seen

  450. for the last six months?

  451. And so,

  452. let's see

  453. how Jesus says this.

  454. Okay?

  455. Let's see Jesus

  456. closing argument

  457. to the jury,

  458. which is you and I.

  459. Look at verse 13.

  460. He says,

  461. Enter by the narrow gate,

  462. for the gate is wide

  463. and the way is easy

  464. that leads to destruction.

  465. And those who enter

  466. by it are many.

  467. But the gate is narrow

  468. and the way is hard

  469. that leads to life.

  470. And those who find it

  471. are few.

  472. You see what Jesus is saying?

  473. In light of everything

  474. you've heard,

  475. in light of all that you've seen,

  476. how I fulfilled

  477. all of the law

  478. and the prophets,

  479. you've seen my baptism,

  480. you've heard my invitation

  481. to come and follow me,

  482. you've heard my explaining

  483. what life in the kingdom

  484. is like,

  485. what are you going to do?

  486. He says,

  487. there's two options

  488. before you.

  489. You can receive my invitation,

  490. you can follow me,

  491. and by the way,

  492. it's hard

  493. and we'll talk about that,

  494. or you can reject

  495. my invitation

  496. and go your own way.

  497. And Jesus' challenge,

  498. his summons for a response

  499. is as relevant today

  500. as it was 2,000 years ago.

  501. Now in some ways,

  502. Jesus' invitation here

  503. to respond

  504. is his black and white invitation

  505. is challenging for us

  506. in this day and age.

  507. And it rubs against

  508. our modern sentiment.

  509. And the reason is

  510. because we live in a world

  511. that today really values choices,

  512. don't we?

  513. You go to the supermarket

  514. and there are 17 varieties

  515. of bottled water

  516. and you can choose

  517. anyone you want

  518. in any flavor or color.

  519. We live in a world

  520. that we value choice.

  521. But in addition to that,

  522. we also like to keep

  523. our options open,

  524. don't we?

  525. We do this with relationships.

  526. We get into a relationship

  527. but we don't want to commit too much

  528. in case there's somebody else

  529. that's waiting up there.

  530. We do this with jobs.

  531. We do this with careers.

  532. We do this with our calendars.

  533. How many of us get invited

  534. to something

  535. and we wait until

  536. the very last minute

  537. before we decide

  538. whether we're going to go

  539. in case something else comes up?

  540. We live in an age

  541. in which we value choice

  542. and we like to keep

  543. our options open.

  544. But in this way,

  545. Jesus really challenges us

  546. and he makes life

  547. a lot easier

  548. because his invitation

  549. to come and follow him

  550. is a binary choice.

  551. He says,

  552. you've got two options here.

  553. You can either join me

  554. in my upside down kingdom

  555. or you can choose

  556. to reject me

  557. and go your own way.

  558. But Jesus doesn't allow us

  559. to sit on the fence.

  560. And one of the reasons

  561. is because Jesus

  562. is never meant

  563. to be admired.

  564. He's meant to be obeyed.

  565. And so his invitation

  566. is not just come

  567. and admire my teachings.

  568. It's come and obey me.

  569. Come and follow me.

  570. Jesus is calling

  571. for a response.

  572. Later on in Matthew's gospel,

  573. he says in chapter 12,

  574. he says,

  575. whoever is not for me

  576. is against me.

  577. Again,

  578. he gives us

  579. these two binary choices.

  580. And one author,

  581. Matthew Green,

  582. said it like this.

  583. He says,

  584. there is no comfortable

  585. middle ground here

  586. embracing most of us,

  587. kind of like the bell curve,

  588. right?

  589. Leaving on either side

  590. either the very good

  591. or the very bad.

  592. How comfortable it would be

  593. if that were the case.

  594. No,

  595. Christianity is not about

  596. being very good

  597. or very bad

  598. or very comfortable.

  599. It's about being

  600. in God's kingdom

  601. or staying out.

  602. It is about allegiance

  603. to God

  604. or it is about rebellion.

  605. It is an awesome choice

  606. that we face.

  607. And paradoxically,

  608. the Sermon on the Mount,

  609. this is probably

  610. the one section

  611. that often gets

  612. most neglected.

  613. Jesus' Sermon on the Mount

  614. is very well admired

  615. by both Christians

  616. and non-Christians alike

  617. with his gracious words

  618. and his teachings

  619. about turning the other cheek.

  620. But all that teaching,

  621. Jesus then comes to us

  622. and says,

  623. okay,

  624. you've heard my teaching.

  625. What are you going

  626. to do with it?

  627. How are you going

  628. to respond?

  629. And yet we tend

  630. to neglect this part

  631. of the Sermon on the Mount.

  632. Now,

  633. look at how he frames

  634. these two choices here.

  635. He says his way,

  636. the way of following Jesus,

  637. he's got three words

  638. to describe it.

  639. What does he say it is?

  640. It is,

  641. it's hard,

  642. it's narrow,

  643. and it's unpopular.

  644. He says the way

  645. of choosing him

  646. is the hardest thing

  647. you'll ever do.

  648. It's the most

  649. life-consuming choice

  650. that you can ever make.

  651. It's not something

  652. that you can just do casually.

  653. It'll demand all of you.

  654. But then conversely,

  655. he says,

  656. the way of rejecting him,

  657. he describes as wide

  658. and open,

  659. it's easy,

  660. and he says,

  661. there are many

  662. that find themselves

  663. on that path.

  664. Now,

  665. the question is,

  666. why?

  667. Why is it

  668. that the way

  669. of rejecting Jesus

  670. is an easy way

  671. to do it?

  672. Why is that so much easier?

  673. Well,

  674. I want to give us

  675. a couple of things

  676. to think about,

  677. and my friend,

  678. Andrew Haslam

  679. in London,

  680. helped me think about this.

  681. First reason,

  682. maybe,

  683. why the way

  684. of rejecting Jesus

  685. is so much easier

  686. is because

  687. the chances are

  688. we are possibly

  689. already on it.

  690. We're already

  691. on that path.

  692. In other words,

  693. if you haven't

  694. already chosen Jesus,

  695. there's a good chance

  696. that you're already

  697. on the path

  698. which is wide

  699. and easy

  700. and in which

  701. everyone else

  702. finds themselves

  703. on that path.

  704. Jesus doesn't hide

  705. the fact that he is

  706. the dividing line

  707. in all of history.

  708. He says,

  709. either you are

  710. on my side

  711. or you're not

  712. on my side.

  713. And if you haven't

  714. deliberately chosen

  715. to live for him,

  716. he says that actually

  717. the way you find yourself

  718. is that you're against him.

  719. And this applies

  720. if you are

  721. a strong atheist

  722. against Jesus,

  723. whether you are

  724. a devoted Buddhist,

  725. whether you are

  726. just an average agnostic,

  727. or maybe even

  728. if you are a nominal

  729. or a cultural Christian,

  730. someone who maybe

  731. just grew up

  732. in a Christian culture

  733. or family

  734. and you think that

  735. by birth

  736. that makes you a Christian.

  737. But friends,

  738. Christianity is not

  739. something that you

  740. just fall into

  741. by way of your race

  742. or your culture

  743. or where you were born

  744. or what family

  745. you come into.

  746. It's a deliberate choice

  747. to follow Jesus.

  748. And so Jesus says,

  749. if you haven't made

  750. that deliberate choice,

  751. chances are you're

  752. on the path

  753. that is wide

  754. and easy

  755. and doesn't know him.

  756. Conversely,

  757. Jesus says,

  758. his way is hard

  759. because it requires

  760. a deliberate decision,

  761. a choice to follow him.

  762. And it's a weighing up

  763. of the options

  764. and it's a choice

  765. to walk away

  766. from a whole lot

  767. of other things

  768. that might be attractive.

  769. But Jesus says,

  770. he calls us

  771. to choose him.

  772. Here's another reason

  773. why it's easy.

  774. Because the way

  775. that is wide

  776. and easy,

  777. it's easy

  778. because it simply

  779. feels good.

  780. And what I mean

  781. by that is that

  782. it's compatible

  783. and confirms

  784. our natural desires,

  785. which are generally

  786. self-seeking.

  787. I don't know

  788. how many of you

  789. have read

  790. that commencement address

  791. by David Foster Wallace

  792. that he gave in 2004

  793. at Kenyon College.

  794. Anyone familiar

  795. with David Foster Wallace's

  796. commencement address?

  797. So David Foster Wallace

  798. was a very famous

  799. American author

  800. and academic

  801. and he gave

  802. this very famous speech

  803. at Kenyon College

  804. in 2004,

  805. which kind of went viral

  806. across the internet.

  807. And he was a humanist,

  808. he wasn't a believer,

  809. he didn't believe

  810. in God at all,

  811. but he gave a very

  812. honest assessment

  813. of humanity

  814. and he actually

  815. took his own life

  816. four years later

  817. in 2008.

  818. But listen to what

  819. he says here

  820. and I agree

  821. with his assessment.

  822. I don't agree

  823. with his solution,

  824. but listen to his assessment.

  825. He says,

  826. everything in my own

  827. immediate experience

  828. supports my deep belief

  829. that I'm the absolute

  830. center of the universe.

  831. I'm the realist,

  832. the most vivid,

  833. the most important person

  834. in existence.

  835. We really think about

  836. this sort of natural,

  837. basic self-centeredness

  838. because it's so

  839. socially repulsive.

  840. But it's pretty much

  841. the same for all of us.

  842. It's our default setting.

  843. It's hardwired

  844. into our boards

  845. at birth.

  846. You see what he's saying?

  847. He's saying the natural

  848. orientation of the human heart,

  849. no matter what culture

  850. you come from,

  851. is that we are

  852. self-centered.

  853. I am the most real,

  854. most vivid,

  855. most important person

  856. in existence.

  857. And that's why Jesus

  858. says that the root

  859. which rejects his call

  860. to be the absolute center

  861. of all that you are

  862. is so much easier

  863. because it's compatible

  864. with our natural desires,

  865. the way we find ourselves,

  866. the way that we are brought up.

  867. It feels so naturally.

  868. It completely fits

  869. with the default position

  870. of our hearts.

  871. But Jesus says

  872. that conversely,

  873. the way you're following him

  874. is demanding.

  875. It asks us to day by day

  876. to lay down our lives.

  877. It asks us to every day

  878. to surrender

  879. our self-centeredness

  880. and say,

  881. Christ,

  882. you be number one

  883. in my heart.

  884. You take the stage.

  885. You be center in my life.

  886. Here's another reason why

  887. the way of rejecting Jesus

  888. is so easy.

  889. Because everybody else

  890. seems to be on it.

  891. As human beings,

  892. we are naturally social beings,

  893. right?

  894. We love community

  895. and to be around people,

  896. loneliness and isolation

  897. and independence

  898. is not good for us.

  899. We are naturally social beings.

  900. And the Bible says

  901. that the reason why

  902. we are social beings

  903. is actually because

  904. we are made in the image

  905. of the God

  906. that is himself communal.

  907. He is Trinitarian.

  908. He is triune.

  909. And therefore,

  910. because we're made in his image,

  911. something of God's nature

  912. is reflected in us

  913. and we are by nature

  914. social beings.

  915. And what that means

  916. is that we love to be part

  917. of some kind of crowd,

  918. some group of people.

  919. Even if it's not the crowd,

  920. we must be part of some crowd,

  921. right?

  922. Is that not right?

  923. I was chatting

  924. to somebody recently

  925. who,

  926. a high school student,

  927. who was saying

  928. that her friends

  929. will go shopping

  930. and buy clothes

  931. based on,

  932. and choose an item

  933. of clothing

  934. based on what response

  935. they'll think they'll get

  936. on their Instagram account.

  937. And so as they're looking

  938. through the shops,

  939. they'll think,

  940. how will this look on me

  941. on Instagram?

  942. And how many likes

  943. or dislikes

  944. or responses

  945. will I get?

  946. We love to be part

  947. of the group.

  948. We are social beings.

  949. I don't know

  950. if you've ever tried

  951. to swim upstream

  952. of a fast-flowing river

  953. or maybe you've been

  954. in the sea

  955. and the current

  956. has pulled you

  957. in one direction.

  958. You've tried to swim

  959. against the current.

  960. And it's an exhausting

  961. and a scary experience.

  962. When I was a little boy,

  963. I think I was six years old,

  964. it was on Christmas Day

  965. and our family went

  966. to the beach

  967. and there was no one else

  968. on the beach

  969. because it was raining

  970. and miserable

  971. and there was

  972. this strong current

  973. pulling out

  974. and I was swimming

  975. in the sea on my own

  976. and before I knew it,

  977. the current was

  978. taking me out to sea

  979. and luckily,

  980. there were lifeguards

  981. that my dad ran

  982. and called them

  983. and the only time

  984. in my life,

  985. a lifeguard had to save me

  986. and pull me out of the water.

  987. But if you've ever

  988. had to try and swim

  989. against the current

  990. or swim upstream

  991. of a river

  992. that's fast-flowing,

  993. it's exhausting.

  994. Even the strongest swimmers

  995. find it a tiring exercise

  996. and that's what it's like

  997. when Jesus says

  998. it's so much easier

  999. just to go with the culture,

  1000. go with the crowd,

  1001. go with what's popular

  1002. and conversely,

  1003. he says,

  1004. following me is difficult

  1005. because it's a call

  1006. to go against

  1007. what may be popular.

  1008. Today, more than ever,

  1009. it's socially awkward

  1010. to talk about Jesus

1011. or to claim to follow him

  1012. or to adhere

  1013. to what he says

  1014. about life

  1015. and sexuality

  1016. and money

  1017. and community.

  1018. Maybe you're a Christian

  1019. here this morning

  1020. and you've come

  1021. to know Christ

  1022. but your family

  1023. doesn't want you

  1024. to get baptized.

  1025. It's hard to make

  1026. the decision

  1027. that is hard

  1028. that is not popular

  1029. with either your family

  1030. or culture.

  1031. Here's another reason

1032. why it may be so much easier.

  1033. There are spiritual forces

  1034. involved keeping you

  1035. on the way

  1036. that is easy.

1037. I know this may be

  1038. a little bit esoteric

  1039. for some of us

1040. in a very intellectual city,

  1041. in a modern city

  1042. like Hong Kong,

  1043. but Jesus says

1044. that there are spiritual forces

  1045. at work

  1046. that are trying to

  1047. do everything

  1048. in their power

  1049. to keep you

  1050. on the path

  1051. that is easy

  1052. and wired

  1053. and divorced

  1054. from him.

  1055. C.S. Lewis

  1056. in his brilliant book

  1057. Screwtape Letters,

  1058. he makes this point

1059. that there are evil forces

  1060. involved

1061. but one of their key strategies

1062. is to keep you blinded

  1063. to the reality

1064. that they are actually there

  1065. dedicated to your destruction

  1066. and your downfall.

  1067. And he says

1068. that they are at work

1069. trying to destroy our lives

1070. but they are helping us

  1071. to not realize

  1072. they are active

  1073. dedicated to our downfall.

1074. And so there is a real

  1075. spiritual battle

  1076. that is involved

  1077. and Jesus says

  1078. for all these reasons

  1079. this is easy.

  1080. And so for these

  1081. and many other reasons

  1082. Jesus cuts against

  1083. the grain of populism

  1084. and soft appeal

  1085. and he summons

  1086. he even commands us

  1087. he says

1088. you have got this choice

  1089. before you

1090. which way are you going

  1091. to live your life?

  1092. There is a way

  1093. that is easy

  1094. and it is wide

  1095. and it is popular

1096. and it is not going

1097. to demand much from you.

1098. But I am warning you

1099. it is a dead end

1100. it leads to a way

  1101. that is destructive.

  1102. He says

  1103. follow me

  1104. follow my kingdom.

  1105. It is narrow

  1106. it is hard

  1107. it is demanding

1108. but it is the way

  1109. that leads to life.

  1110. And this is something

  1111. that we sometimes

  1112. struggle with

  1113. because today

1114. more than in Jesus' day

1115. we struggle with the idea

  1116. that there are

  1117. two binary choices.

1118. One of the supreme values

  1119. of our age

  1120. is tolerance

  1121. and open mindedness.

  1122. And so we struggle

  1123. with the idea

  1124. that Jesus says

  1125. I am truth

  1126. my way is right

  1127. all other ways

  1128. are not true.

  1129. And sometimes

  1130. when Jesus says

  1131. this is truth

  1132. follow me

  1133. I am truth

  1134. it feels like

1135. a punch to the stomach

  1136. right?

  1137. But Jesus doesn't

  1138. hold any punches

  1139. he doesn't hold back

  1140. he says

  1141. to follow him

1142. is to walk in truth

  1143. to reject him

1144. is to reject the truth.

  1145. Jesus says

  1146. that he gives us

  1147. these two choices.

1148. Now for some of us

  1149. we think

  1150. that feels

  1151. way too binary.

  1152. It doesn't feel

  1153. open minded enough.

  1154. How can Jesus say

1155. there is only one truth?

  1156. Don't all religions

  1157. end up pointing

  1158. to the same God

  1159. anyway?

  1160. I was having a conversation

1161. with a friend of mine

  1162. a few weeks ago

  1163. and we were talking

  1164. and this was his

  1165. exact argument.

  1166. He was saying

  1167. all religions look

  1168. different on the surface

  1169. right?

  1170. Jesus says this

  1171. and Muhammad says this

  1172. and Guatama Buddha

  1173. said that.

  1174. They all look different

  1175. on the surface

  1176. but underlining

1177. they're all the same thing.

  1178. They all lead

  1179. to the same God

  1180. anyway.

1181. And so the idea is

  1182. shouldn't we be

  1183. more open minded?

  1184. Some people say

  1185. I don't believe

  1186. any one religion

  1187. is true

  1188. to the exclusion

  1189. of others.

  1190. They're all just

  1191. different paths

1192. that lead to the same

  1193. destination.

  1194. But friends

1195. if we think about that

  1196. that belief statement

  1197. is as much

  1198. a belief statement

  1199. as much a statement

  1200. of what's true

  1201. in the world

  1202. and what's not true

  1203. as Jesus'

  1204. exclusive claim

1205. to say I am the way

  1206. the truth

  1207. and the life.

  1208. To say all religions

  1209. are just different paths

1210. that end up in the same way

  1211. is an equally strong

  1212. statement of belief

  1213. of what's true

  1214. as anything else.

1215. To say it doesn't matter

  1216. what you believe

  1217. all beliefs

1218. just end up the same

1219. is as strong a statement

  1220. as Jesus' statement

  1221. to the exclusivity

  1222. of Christ

  1223. and the gospel.

  1224. There's a scientist

  1225. Neil deGrasse Tyson

  1226. he famously said

  1227. recently

  1228. said the great thing

  1229. about science

  1230. is that it's true

  1231. whether you believe

  1232. in it or not.

  1233. But the thing is

  1234. that's not only true

  1235. for science

  1236. that's true

  1237. for anything

  1238. that's truth.

  1239. Right?

  1240. That's the case

  1241. for all truth.

  1242. Whether you believe

  1243. in it or not

  1244. it's simply true.

  1245. And so Jesus

  1246. is as honest

  1247. as you can get

  1248. he says follow me

1249. enter by the narrow gate

  1250. follow the way

  1251. that is hard

  1252. the path

  1253. that few have trodden

  1254. because it's true.

  1255. And because

1256. what does he say here?

  1257. Because it ends

  1258. in life.

  1259. It ends

  1260. in life.

  1261. Jesus says

  1262. I've got the

1263. I've put these two choices

  1264. before you.

  1265. Now

1266. at the end of the chapter

  1267. Jesus changes analogies

  1268. but he actually says

  1269. the same thing.

  1270. He's calling for a response

  1271. except this time

1272. he calls us to consider

  1273. not so much

  1274. the ease

  1275. or the difficulty

  1276. of the choice

  1277. but the outcome.

  1278. What is the result

  1279. of the choice

1280. that you're going to make?

1281. And so look at what he says

  1282. here in verse 24.

1283. He says you've got two choices.

  1284. Everyone then

1285. who hears these words of mine

  1286. and does them

1287. will be like a wise man

  1288. who built his house

  1289. on the rocks.

  1290. Now

  1291. admittedly

  1292. this wisdom

  1293. looks like foolishness.

  1294. Okay

  1295. that's why

  1296. it's an upside down

  1297. kind of wisdom.

  1298. It's a wisdom

1299. that doesn't look like wisdom

  1300. on first appearances.

  1301. It's a wisdom

  1302. that says

  1303. it's more blessed

  1304. to give away

  1305. than to hoard.

  1306. It's a wisdom

  1307. that says

  1308. it's more blessed

  1309. to mourn

1310. than to just be jovial.

  1311. It's a wisdom

  1312. that says

  1313. it's more blessed

1314. to be poor in spirit

  1315. than not so.

1316. So it's an upside down

  1317. kind of wisdom

  1318. but it's a wisdom

  1319. in which Jesus says

  1320. it's harder

  1321. it's more difficult

1322. but it leads to life.

  1323. Conversely

  1324. he says

  1325. though the storms come

  1326. and the rains fall

  1327. the typhoons ravage it

  1328. those who have heard

  1329. and not just heard

  1330. but accepted

  1331. and received my words

  1332. they will stand.

  1333. their lives will be

1334. like a rock solid house

1335. on a rock solid foundation

  1336. that will not

  1337. that will withstand

  1338. the storms of life.

  1339. And contrary to this

  1340. Jesus says

  1341. there's another option

  1342. and that's to dismiss

  1343. my words

  1344. and to dismiss it

1345. as a version of truth

  1346. as what's true

  1347. for those people

  1348. but mainly

  1349. not true for me.

  1350. And he says

1351. that when we do that

  1352. look at what happens

  1353. it's both foolish

  1354. and it's dangerous

  1355. because in the end

1356. a life which is built

1357. on that kind of reasoning

  1358. that kind of approach

  1359. that kind of decision

  1360. leads to great heartache

  1361. great pain

  1362. great agony

  1363. and in the end

  1364. it leads to destruction.

  1365. Now friends

  1366. the obvious question

  1367. is this

  1368. why on earth

  1369. would anybody

  1370. that is engaging

  1371. on a building project

  1372. why on earth

  1373. would you build

  1374. on a shallow foundation?

  1375. Why on earth

  1376. would you build

  1377. on sand

  1378. when you could build

  1379. on rock?

  1380. Why would you make

  1381. the decision

  1382. especially if you're

  1383. building a house

  1384. that you're going

  1385. to live in

  1386. or your children

1387. are going to live in

  1388. or imagine someone's

  1389. building a school

  1390. and your children

  1391. are going to go

  1392. to the school

  1393. right?

  1394. Why would anybody

  1395. choose on a shallow

  1396. superficial foundation?

  1397. I mean that's just

  1398. ridiculous.

  1399. Well the reason

  1400. is obvious

  1401. because it's cheaper

  1402. because it's easier

1403. and because at the time

  1404. you think

  1405. that it's good enough.

  1406. You think the foundation

  1407. is going to stand.

  1408. Nobody builds a house

  1409. and says

  1410. listen I know

  1411. this is probably

  1412. going to fall

  1413. in the first storm

  1414. that comes

  1415. but let me just

  1416. do it anyway.

  1417. At the time

  1418. it feels like

  1419. the safe thing

  1420. to do

  1421. but one change

  1422. of season

  1423. one freak storm

  1424. one accident

  1425. comes

  1426. and everything

  1427. is in ruins

  1428. and the consequences

  1429. is not just

  1430. a loss of money

  1431. it's loss of life

  1432. and that's

  1433. Jesus' point here.

  1434. He says

  1435. the choices

  1436. that we make

  1437. in life

  1438. whether consciously

  1439. or not

  1440. the choice

  1441. that you make

  1442. and especially

  1443. your response

  1444. to who Jesus is

  1445. and his claim

  1446. to be the way

  1447. and the truth

  1448. and the life

  1449. has radical

  1450. implications

  1451. for our lives.

  1452. And so Jesus says

1453. I give you this choice

  1454. you can't sit

  1455. on the fence

  1456. you can't try

  1457. and have one foot

  1458. in each camp

  1459. which way

1460. are you going to go?

  1461. the way

  1462. that is wide

  1463. and easy

  1464. and popular

  1465. or the way

  1466. that is narrow

  1467. and hard

  1468. and demanding

  1469. but it's the way

  1470. that leads

  1471. to life.

  1472. Now as we

  1473. come towards

  1474. a close

  1475. maybe I shouldn't

  1476. say that too soon

  1477. if you look

  1478. at your Bible

  1479. you'll see

  1480. that we skipped

  1481. over two paragraphs

  1482. okay

  1483. look at your

  1484. bulletin

  1485. in verse 13

  1486. Jesus talks about

  1487. this narrow gate

  1488. and this narrow way

1489. and then in verse 24

  1490. he talks about

  1491. these houses

  1492. these two houses

  1493. and in between that

  1494. Jesus gives two warnings

  1495. for those of us

  1496. that are Christ followers

  1497. or consider ourselves

  1498. Christ followers

  1499. to test the sincerity

  1500. of our faith

  1501. and to see whether

  1502. in fact we are

  1503. walking with Jesus

  1504. whether in fact

  1505. we are part of

  1506. this upside down kingdom

  1507. remember Jesus

  1508. is constantly challenging

  1509. the religious people

  1510. in this day

  1511. and he's constantly

  1512. calling them

  1513. to a sincere faith

  1514. to see whether

  1515. they are really

  1516. walking with him

  1517. or whether they are

  1518. just being religious

  1519. and so Jesus here

  1520. calls us to examine

  1521. our faith

  1522. and to test

  1523. the genuineness of it

  1524. and he gives us

  1525. two warnings

  1526. of imitation faith

1527. look at the first one

  1528. in verse 15

  1529. he warns against

  1530. false teaching

  1531. and false teachers

1532. he says in verse 15

  1533. beware of false prophets

1534. those who come to you

  1535. in chief clothing

  1536. but inwardly

  1537. are ravenous

  1538. wills

1539. they may look the part

  1540. they may say

  1541. the right things

  1542. they may bleat

  1543. like sheep

  1544. but actually

  1545. they are sinister

  1546. and Jesus warns

  1547. against false teachings

  1548. and in the new

  1549. testament

  1550. there are two

  1551. indicators

  1552. of false teachings

  1553. the first one

1554. is that a false teacher

1555. generally likes to tell you

  1556. exactly what you want

  1557. to hear

  1558. so in the book

  1559. of 2 Timothy

  1560. the apostle Paul

  1561. writes this young leader

  1562. and he says

  1563. Timothy beware

  1564. of the false teachers

  1565. and he says

  1566. these false teachers

  1567. will come

1568. and they will tell people

  1569. what their itching ears

  1570. want to hear

  1571. in other words

  1572. these teachers

  1573. will go to people

  1574. and they will very

  1575. cleverly work out

  1576. what is it

1577. that you want to hear

  1578. what is a message

  1579. that will appeal

  1580. to your ears

  1581. and that will

  1582. draw a crowd

  1583. and then they will

  1584. tailor that message

  1585. to exactly

1586. what you want to hear

  1587. and Timothy

  1588. Paul says to Timothy

  1589. the problem with this

1590. is that it will lead

  1591. to a shipwrecked faith

  1592. that's an amazing image

  1593. isn't it

  1594. imagine a ship

  1595. and it smashes

  1596. against the rocks

1597. or drives into an iceberg

  1598. and it still looks

  1599. all fine on top

  1600. but underneath

1601. there is a gauging hole

1602. and it is taking in water

1603. and it is just a few hours

  1604. before the ship

  1605. lifts up

  1606. and sinks

1607. to the bottom of the ocean

  1608. and Paul writes

  1609. and he says

  1610. that's what happens

  1611. when we listen

  1612. to false teaching

  1613. to teachers

1614. that will just tell us

  1615. whatever our ears

  1616. want to hear

  1617. now friends

  1618. when we think of

  1619. false teaching

  1620. what do we generally

  1621. think of

  1622. we think of

  1623. prosperity gospel

  1624. right

  1625. people who say

  1626. okay

1627. you give a thousand dollars

1628. and God will give you

  1629. ten thousand dollars back

  1630. right

  1631. that's true

  1632. but these days

  1633. there is a far

  1634. softer

  1635. and more subtle

  1636. version of the same

  1637. kind of teaching

  1638. it's a teaching

  1639. that says

  1640. God exists

  1641. to make you happy

  1642. and comfortable

  1643. God exists

  1644. to cater

  1645. to your felt needs

  1646. God's existence

  1647. in the world

  1648. is around

  1649. how to make you

  1650. happy and comfortable

  1651. and

  1652. your convenience

  1653. and the result

1654. of this kind of invitation

  1655. to walk the wide

  1656. and the easy path

  1657. to tell us

  1658. exactly what we want

  1659. to hear

  1660. to build our lives

  1661. on a faulty foundation

  1662. is that when things

  1663. don't pan out

1664. the way that we expect

  1665. the end

  1666. is destruction

  1667. and a shipwrecked faith

  1668. and that's why

  1669. friends at Watermark

1670. I know it may not be

  1671. the most sexy thing

  1672. in the world

  1673. but we are committed

  1674. to preaching

1675. week in and week out

  1676. the Bible

  1677. because we want

  1678. to be a church

  1679. that is not grounded

  1680. on my opinions

  1681. or Chris's opinions

  1682. or anyone else's opinions

  1683. or on what anyone

  1684. wants to hear

  1685. we want to know

  1686. who is God

1687. and what has he said

  1688. so that when the

  1689. storms of life come

  1690. and the challenges come

  1691. our faith doesn't

  1692. get shipwrecked

  1693. it stands firm

  1694. in the midst

1695. of the storms of life

1696. and so can I just ask you

  1697. there will no doubt

  1698. be a time

  1699. when many of us

  1700. move away

  1701. out of Hong Kong

  1702. to another city

  1703. or maybe even

  1704. in Hong Kong

1705. you move to another church

  1706. when you move

  1707. to another church

  1708. will you ask yourself

  1709. this question

  1710. not just

  1711. is the parking lot

  1712. comfortable and convenient

  1713. is the kids ministry

  1714. entertaining

  1715. how good looking

  1716. is the worship leader

  1717. will you ask yourself

  1718. this question

  1719. are they teaching

  1720. God's word

  1721. is this church

  1722. rooted and founded

  1723. in God's word

  1724. or are they just

  1725. telling me

1726. what I want to hear

  1727. okay

  1728. that's the first

  1729. indication of false

  1730. teaching

  1731. the second indication

  1732. is this

  1733. false teaching

  1734. focuses on the

  1735. Christian lifestyle

  1736. or Christian behavior

  1737. or Christian conduct

  1738. but it's disconnected

  1739. from who Jesus is

1740. and his death on the cross

1741. what he did on the cross

1742. and so there may be

1743. a whole bunch of teaching

  1744. which is practical wisdom

1745. how to get by in life

1746. how to make your life

  1747. really work

  1748. and count

  1749. and how to be

  1750. a successful businessman

  1751. or whatever

  1752. whatever else

  1753. but the problem is

  1754. it's not connected

  1755. to who Jesus is

  1756. the problem of sin

  1757. why Jesus died

  1758. on the cross

  1759. what's wrong

  1760. with the world

  1761. and how Christ

  1762. has come to heal

  1763. and save it

  1764. by his death

  1765. on the cross

1766. and so all it is

  1767. is that teaching

  1768. is practical

  1769. secular humanism

  1770. in a Christian

  1771. religious coat

  1772. of paint

  1773. and friends

  1774. is that ever

  1775. going to call you

  1776. down the difficult path

  1777. is that ever

  1778. going to tell you

  1779. to deny yourself

  1780. and to follow Jesus

  1781. of course not

1782. it's going to invite you

  1783. down a wide

  1784. and an easy path

  1785. but it's a path

  1786. that leads to destruction

  1787. and so Jesus says

  1788. beware of false prophets

1789. those who come to you

  1790. in sheep's clothing

  1791. the second warning

  1792. is this

1793. and we're not going to

1794. spend much time in it

  1795. verse 21

  1796. he says

  1797. not everyone

  1798. who says to me

  1799. Lord Lord

  1800. will enter the kingdom

  1801. of heaven

  1802. but the one

  1803. who does the will

  1804. of my father

  1805. who's in heaven

  1806. and Jesus warns us

  1807. against not just

  1808. false teaching

  1809. but against

  1810. false assurance

  1811. in other words

  1812. a superstitious

  1813. kind of faith

  1814. that just says

1815. if I say the right

  1816. things

1817. if I do the right

  1818. actions

  1819. if I prophesy

  1820. or go to CG

  1821. or say the right

  1822. things

  1823. that makes me

  1824. a Christian

  1825. and Jesus says

  1826. it all comes down

1827. to do you know him

  1828. do you have

  1829. relationship with him

  1830. do you love him

  1831. now

1832. as we come to close

  1833. both the sermon

  1834. and the series

1835. I want us to come back

  1836. to the beginning

  1837. and to ask ourselves

  1838. this one final question

  1839. what is the purpose

  1840. of the sermon

  1841. on the mount

  1842. what is Jesus

  1843. actually trying to do

1844. in all this kind of stuff

  1845. is it just practical

  1846. idealism

1847. is it as Leo Tolstoy

  1848. once said

  1849. it's a blueprint

  1850. for utopia

  1851. it's kind of this

  1852. practical

  1853. pragmatism

  1854. of how to really

  1855. make life

  1856. most comfortable

  1857. and convenient

  1858. is it as others

  1859. have suggested

  1860. a temporary moral system

1861. until we get to heaven

  1862. friends

  1863. Jesus in the sermon

  1864. on the mount

  1865. shows us

  1866. what life

  1867. in the kingdom

  1868. looks like

  1869. he shows us

  1870. what life is like

  1871. when he is king

1872. and we've come to know him

  1873. and follow him

1874. remember right in the beginning

  1875. Jesus says

  1876. follow me

  1877. for I bring you

  1878. the kingdom of heaven

  1879. and he's showing us

1880. what life in the kingdom

  1881. looks like

  1882. what it looks like

  1883. to follow him

  1884. but the problem is

  1885. none of us

  1886. can even begin

  1887. to live out

  1888. this kingdom ethic

  1889. unless we've entered

  1890. the kingdom

  1891. and the problem is

  1892. that none of us

  1893. can enter the kingdom

  1894. on our own

  1895. right here

  1896. at the beginning

1897. Jesus gives us a clue

1898. how to find our way

  1899. into the kingdom

  1900. and to live

  1901. his kingdom

1902. and the clue is this

  1903. the way

  1904. into the kingdom

1905. is the exact same way

  1906. as the way

  1907. of the kingdom

  1908. and what I mean

  1909. by that is this

1910. the way of the kingdom

  1911. of God

  1912. the way of Jesus

  1913. kingdom

  1914. is narrow

  1915. and it's exclusive

  1916. he says

  1917. it's my way

1918. and it's my way only

  1919. but that is

1920. the same as the way

  1921. into the kingdom

  1922. is equally narrow

  1923. and it's equally exclusive

  1924. Jesus is

  1925. me and me alone

  1926. I am alone

  1927. the way to truth

  1928. I alone

1929. am the way to life

  1930. I am alone

  1931. and the way

  1932. to the father

  1933. Jesus is radically

  1934. exclusive

  1935. in his invitation

  1936. to follow him

  1937. but also his invitation

  1938. into the kingdom

  1939. Jesus didn't come

  1940. to bring a religion

  1941. or to conduct

  1942. a system of morality

  1943. and ethics

  1944. he didn't come

  1945. to bring a religion

  1946. he came to bring

  1947. a revelation

  1948. he came to say

  1949. this is what

  1950. the kingdom of heaven

  1951. is like

  1952. this is what

  1953. God is like

  1954. this is what

  1955. my way is like

  1956. this is what

  1957. it looks like

  1958. to follow me

  1959. Jesus came to bring

  1960. a revelation

  1961. to show us

  1962. what the kingdom

  1963. of God is like

  1964. to show us

  1965. what God is like

  1966. and to show us

  1967. what it looks like

  1968. as we turn from

  1969. ourselves

  1970. and turn to him

  1971. Christianity

  1972. at its heart

  1973. is a revelation

  1974. of who God is

  1975. and how we can

  1976. know him

  1977. it's not a religion

  1978. Jesus came to bring

  1979. a revelation

  1980. but he also came

  1981. to bring relationship

  1982. he came to say

  1983. follow me

  1984. on this narrow path

1985. but he didn't just say

  1986. walk the narrow path

  1987. and I'll see you

  1988. at the end

  1989. he said

  1990. I'll walk this path

  1991. with you

1992. in the book of Isaiah

  1993. at the end

  1994. in Isaiah chapter 43

    Isaiah 43 chapter mention

  1995. there's this amazing invitation

  1996. where God says

  1997. to his people

  1998. he says

  1999. if you follow me

  2000. and if you walk

  2001. in my ways

  2002. it'll be hard

  2003. it'll be difficult

  2004. it'll be demanding

2005. and then he says this

  2006. he says

  2007. fear not

2008. I've called you by name

  2009. I'll walk this road

  2010. with you

  2011. he says

  2012. when you pass

  2013. through the waters

2014. I will be with you

2015. when the rivers rise up

  2016. and they seem

  2017. to overwhelm you

  2018. and it feels like

2019. this way is too hard

2020. they will not overwhelm you

2021. I will be with you

  2022. he says

  2023. there'll be times

  2024. when it feels like

  2025. you're walking

  2026. through the fire

  2027. you'll feel all alone

  2028. you'll feel like

  2029. it's too demanding

  2030. God I can't do this anymore

  2031. he says

  2032. when you walk

  2033. through the fire

2034. you will not be burnt

  2035. the flames

  2036. will not consume you

2037. for I am the Lord

  2038. your God

2039. the Holy One of Israel

  2040. I am with you

  2041. friends

  2042. Jesus asks us

2043. to walk this narrow path

  2044. it's demanding

  2045. it's difficult

2046. he'll demand all of you

  2047. but he says

  2048. I'll walk this path

  2049. with you

2050. you will not walk it alone

  2051. and the ironic thing

2052. is that the other path

  2053. that is wide

  2054. and inviting

  2055. it's popular

  2056. and it feels like

2057. we won't walk it alone

  2058. but in the end

2059. we find it's the most

  2060. lonely place to be

2061. because we get to the end

  2062. of the road

  2063. and all we've got

  2064. at us is ourselves

  2065. and the God

2066. who made us for himself

  2067. and the God

  2068. who made us

  2069. for relationship

  2070. with him

  2071. is not there

  2072. Jesus says

  2073. I came to bring

  2074. a revelation

  2075. of who God is

  2076. but I came to

  2077. bring a relationship

  2078. I came that you

2079. may do it with me

  2080. but finally he says

  2081. that all this starts

2082. it starts with a rescue

  2083. Christianity at its heart

  2084. is about a rescue

  2085. it's about God

  2086. doing for us

2087. what we could not do

  2088. for ourselves

  2089. how so you ask

  2090. by Jesus walking

  2091. the narrow

  2092. and the difficult path

  2093. which no one else

2094. in the history of the world

  2095. ever walked

2096. and no one will ever

  2097. walk again

  2098. Jesus walked this narrow

  2099. road to Calvary

2100. not just with a cross

  2101. on his back

  2102. there were many

  2103. that did that

  2104. he walked this narrow

  2105. road to Calvary

  2106. with all the sins

  2107. of the world

  2108. on his shoulders

  2109. he walked this road

  2110. that nobody else

  2111. will ever walk again

  2112. friends

  2113. Jesus walked the narrow

  2114. road his whole life

  2115. never one step

  2116. to one side

  2117. or the other

  2118. and in the end

2119. he went to the cross

2120. as if all he had ever done

  2121. is walk the road

  2122. to destruction

  2123. in the end

  2124. he died as if

  2125. he had chosen

  2126. the other path

  2127. and he did it

2128. to open up the way

  2129. for us

  2130. that you and I

  2131. don't have to

  2132. Jesus walked the narrow

  2133. road to Calvary

2134. so that you and I

2135. don't have to end up there

  2136. friends

  2137. Jesus walked the narrow

  2138. road to destruction

2139. so that you and I

  2140. can walk the narrow

2141. road that leads to life

  2142. and friends

  2143. Jesus didn't just

  2144. endure the winds

  2145. and the storms

2146. and the hail of life

2147. he endured the full wrath

  2148. of God's judgment

  2149. of sin poured out

  2150. on his shoulders

2151. so that you and I

2152. can take refuge in him

  2153. and find our home

  2154. in him

  2155. and in many ways

  2156. it's true

  2157. Jesus' invitation

  2158. and his command

  2159. to follow him

  2160. is radically exclusive

  2161. it's true

  2162. he says

  2163. I'm the only way

  2164. the only truth

  2165. the only life

2166. there is no other way

  2167. to the father

  2168. there's no other way

  2169. to everlasting life

  2170. except through me

  2171. it's true

  2172. that it's radically

  2173. exclusive in some ways

2174. but in the other ways

  2175. Jesus' invitation

  2176. is radically inclusive

  2177. because he says

  2178. there's nothing

  2179. you need to do

  2180. there's nothing

  2181. you need to bring

  2182. to the table

  2183. except

  2184. simple

  2185. trust

  2186. in me

  2187. Jesus says

  2188. whoever comes to me

  2189. I will never

  2190. ever

  2191. ever

  2192. reject

  2193. Jesus' invitation

  2194. is radically inclusive

  2195. because it's open

  2196. to anyone

2197. you can be the richest

  2198. person in the world

2199. you can be the poorest

  2200. person in the world

  2201. you can have

  2202. multiple degrees

2203. you can have no education

  2204. you can be

  2205. up high

  2206. esteemed by society

2207. you can be on the

  2208. bottom rungs

  2209. of society

  2210. you can be loved

  2211. and esteemed

  2212. by many

  2213. you can be despised

  2214. and rejected

  2215. by all

  2216. Jesus says

  2217. his invitation

  2218. is open

  2219. to everyone

  2220. whoever comes

  2221. to me

  2222. he says

  2223. I will never

  2224. ever

  2225. cast out

  2226. friends

2227. if the Sermon on the Mount

  2228. was just another

  2229. ethical teaching

  2230. like every other

  2231. religion

  2232. then the irreligious

  2233. the weak

  2234. those with doubts

  2235. those who don't have

  2236. all their stuff together

  2237. and can't behave morally

  2238. are excluded

  2239. but Jesus says

  2240. this invitation

  2241. is open to everyone

  2242. it's anyone

  2243. who will simply

2244. ask me to lead them

  2245. anyone who will

  2246. simply come and say

  2247. have your way

  2248. in my life

  2249. Jesus throws open

  2250. the invitation

  2251. and he says

  2252. come and follow me

  2253. I am the way

  2254. to life

  2255. let's come to him

  2256. now

  2257. let's pray

  2258. I want to invite

  2259. the prayer stewards

  2260. to come up

  2261. to the front

  2262. and we are going

  2263. to sing

  2264. one or two songs

  2265. in response

  2266. and if you would

  2267. like prayer for anything

  2268. there will be

  2269. prayer stewards

  2270. at the front

  2271. and I would love

  2272. to invite you

  2273. to come and get

  2274. some prayer

  2275. you can pray

  2276. for anything

  2277. in the world

  2278. you can pray

  2279. because you are

  2280. having a rough week

  2281. you can pray

  2282. because you want

  2283. to freshly surrender

  2284. your life to Jesus

  2285. you can come

  2286. and pray

  2287. because maybe

2288. for the very first time

  2289. you want Jesus

  2290. to be Lord

  2291. maybe you want

  2292. to pray

  2293. because for weeks

  2294. or months

  2295. or years

  2296. or maybe

  2297. your entire life

  2298. you have chosen

  2299. a wide

  2300. and easy path

  2301. apart from Christ

  2302. and today

  2303. Jesus is summoning you

  2304. and he is saying

2305. enter by the narrow gate

  2306. choose life

  2307. this day

  2308. I present before you

  2309. two choices

  2310. life and death

  2311. this day

  2312. I am asking you

  2313. says Jesus

  2314. choose life

  2315. friends

  2316. if you want

  2317. to choose life

2318. come and pray to Jesus

  2319. come there will be

  2320. prayer stewards

  2321. that would love

2322. to lead you in prayer

  2323. I would love

2324. to lead you in prayer

  2325. this day

  2326. don't leave this place

  2327. on the same way

  2328. you came in

2329. come and leave this place

  2330. a different road today

2331. come and let's ask Jesus

  2332. to do that

  2333. let's pray together

  2334. heavenly father

  2335. God thank you

2336. for your upside down kingdom

  2337. thank you Jesus

  2338. for your amazing invitation

2339. to come and find life

  2340. Jesus thank you

  2341. that you invite us

  2342. in Isaiah 55

  2343. to come and buy

  2344. living waters

2345. and to come and eat bread

  2346. that gives life

2347. and to come and feast

  2348. our souls

  2349. on true food

  2350. God

  2351. where our souls

  2352. and our hearts

  2353. are hungry

  2354. for living bread

  2355. and living water

  2356. you invite us

2357. you say come and buy

  2358. in one sense

2359. it will cost you everything

  2360. in the other sense

  2361. Jesus you say

2362. it will cost us nothing

  2363. Jesus this morning

2364. we want to come to you

  2365. this morning Jesus

2366. we want to take up

  2367. your invitation

  2368. we want to

2369. we want to respond to you

  2370. and say yes Lord

  2371. count us in

  2372. Father this morning

  2373. give us faith

  2374. God it's so hard

  2375. to walk away

2376. from that which is popular

  2377. and easy

  2378. and comfortable

2379. and to make the choice

  2380. to follow you God

2381. that way which will demand

  2382. our all

  2383. that way which will

  2384. which will be difficult

  2385. at times

  2386. oh God

  2387. give us faith

  2388. where we doubt

  2389. God help us God

  2390. where we

  2391. where we don't want

2392. to make that choice God

  2393. Father where we are

  2394. facing decisions

  2395. that even this week

  2396. we know God

  2397. leads

  2398. to life

  2399. or away from life

  2400. God help us

  2401. we pray

2402. help us to choose you

2403. Father pray for some of us

  2404. God that are

  2405. we feel like we're

  2406. straddling the fence

2407. we feel like we've got

2408. one foot on either side

  2409. we try to

  2410. on one sense

  2411. follow you

  2412. but in another sense

  2413. there's this pull

2414. we want to follow ourselves

  2415. oh Jesus

  2416. come and help us

  2417. I pray

  2418. help us God

  2419. to be decisive

  2420. to make a decision

  2421. and to choose life

  2422. God open our eyes

2423. help us to see that

  2424. the foundation

  2425. that our life

  2426. is built upon

2427. help us to see that

  2428. all other

  2429. choices are sinking sand

  2430. that you alone

  2431. Christ

  2432. are the rock

2433. upon which we can stand

  2434. oh God

  2435. help us

  2436. I pray

  2437. come and call us

  2438. to yourself

2439. come and have your way

  2440. we pray

  2441. in your powerful

  2442. in your gracious

  2443. in your inviting

  2444. in your majestic name

  2445. help us

  2446. goodbye
