  1. Father, we ask that you gently but deeply pour out the Holy Spirit upon us and bring the story of Christmas deeply to our heart, to the command center of our lives, where we might know you, Father, and we might be more and more and more shaped by the gospel.

  2. And all these things we ask in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  3. Please be seated.

  4. So, my Christmas Eve sermons are always a bit weird.

  5. I know there's lots of little ones. I know they're very, very wiggly.

  6. And so we try to intersperse the sermon with some videos.

  7. Andrew, do you have the first video sort of lined up?

  8. Okay.

  9. Okay.

  10. Oh, Christmas tree.

  11. How lovely are we herening.

  12. Oh, Christmas tree.

  13. Oh, Christmas tree.

  14. In forest madness springing.

  15. Then in the name of Christmas joy,

  16. We speak your life to kill this joy.

  17. Oh, Christmas tree.

  18. Oh, Christmas tree.

  19. Now meet our answers swinging.

  20. Oh, Christmas tree.

  21. Oh, Christmas tree.

  22. With fire and rose now fairly.

  23. Oh, Christmas tree.

  24. Oh, Christmas tree.

  25. And from your home it's fairly.

  26. Set that a song with new friends.

  27. For long, for long, as you just best.

  28. Oh, Christmas tree.

  29. Oh, Christmas tree.

  30. Rest from your native dwelling.

  31. Oh, Christmas tree.

  32. Oh, Christmas tree.

  33. Oh, Christmas tree.

  34. With every hour decaying.

  35. Oh, Christmas tree.

  36. Oh, Christmas tree.

  37. Silver and altar reigning.

  38. With gentle trays to hide the crown.

  39. We blew the needles from the ground.

  40. Oh, Christmas tree.

  41. Oh, Christmas tree.

  42. Oh, Christmas tree.

  43. The rotten branch is praying.

  44. Humanity.

  45. Oh, Christmas tree.

  46. Humanity.

  47. Humanity.

  48. Humanity.

  49. Humanity.

  50. Humanity.

  51. A flesh and bone plantation.

  52. Humanity.

  53. A feather tree.

  54. No golden decorations.

  55. To cut and tease.

  56. And trick his pride.

  57. Surround with family through the night.

  58. Humanity.

  59. Humanity.

  60. Humanity.

  61. Oh, fall and tree.

  62. Distant for exploration.

  63. Notivity.

  64. Notivity.

  65. The King of Heaven.

  66. Loving ability.

  67. The promise lead.

  68. Into the earth now soren.

  69. And bringing forth our own clay

  70. The Son of God on Christmas Day

  71. Nativity, their fruitful tree

  72. Now in our midst has fallen

  73. Born to wait as popular

  74. Born to give us every love

  75. In heaven's name, rejoice and sing

  76. My true love, peace for me

  77. A couple of weeks ago

  78. I was having a conversation with somebody in a coffee shop

  79. And it was just after that Christian missionary

  80. You know the young guy who went on an island

  81. Where they didn't like people from outside

  82. It was a complete unreached people group

  83. And he got killed

  84. Remember he got killed?

  85. His body was on the shore I think

  86. For a little while before they were able to rescue it

  87. And this fellow, this friend of mine

  88. Whom I've talked to quite a few times

  89. You know, gay, sort of vaguely Jewish

  90. And very, very secular

  91. He found himself, he was telling me

  92. He found himself completely and utterly gripped

  93. By the story of this missionary

  94. This young guy

  95. Both fascinated that this young guy

  96. Would have such a desire to go and even risk his life

  97. And at the same time just sort of bothered

  98. That something like that would go on in the Christian faith

  99. That there's something about that

  100. You know, telling other people about it

  101. Was so important

  102. Anyway, we had this conversation

  103. It was one of those odd moments

  104. He actually worked in that particular place

  105. And we had five or six or seven minutes

  106. Where nobody came to the lineup

  107. We had a bit of a conversation

  108. And he got to air some of his mis...

  109. You know, he said certain things

  110. He thought about Christians

  111. And he trusted that I wouldn't be offended

  112. And one of the things I said to him

  113. Is that Christians

  114. Nobody who reads the Bible

  115. Should come to the conclusion

  116. That the Bible believes the world

  117. Is divided between good people and bad people

  118. I said, the Bible doesn't teach that

  119. Christians aren't supposed to believe that

  120. It's just not what Christians believe

  121. I said, Christians believe

  122. That the line between good and evil

  123. Goes right down every individual

  124. That every human being

  125. We can do good things

  126. But everything about us is touched

  127. By evil

  128. And I said, so the gospel

  129. I said to him

  130. Isn't about how to make good

  131. Bad people good

  132. The Bible

  133. The gospel

  134. Is about how to make dead people alive

  135. Jesus didn't come

  136. To make bad people good

  137. Jesus came

  138. To make dead people alive

  139. And

  140. The wonderful thing about that funny

  141. Silly video

  142. Is that it really

  143. Tries to bring home to us

  144. The fact that

  145. We are separated from God

  146. And

  147. And we're on

  148. On the way to dying

  149. I know it came to

  150. Come here to Christmas Eve

  151. And I tell you really

  152. Really fantastic stuff

  153. You're all one closer to death

  154. Than you were the day before

  155. And it bothers lots of us

  156. To hear that

  157. But the fact of the matter is

  158. It's just unbelievably true

  159. And

  160. And so

  161. It's that type of context

  162. Where

  163. And we have to hear

  164. The

  165. The stories of Christmas

  166. So I

  167. I read from Luke

  168. If you have your Bibles

  169. It's actually going to be up there

  170. On the screen

  171. I'll just sort of

  172. Refresh your mind

  173. About the first part of it

  174. Andrew

  175. If you could just skip to

  176. On the screen

  177. To verse

  178. Verse 8

  179. So

  180. Luke

  181. Who by the way

  182. Was born a pagan

  183. Lived a pagan

  184. As a pagan

  185. For many many years

  186. He would have

  187. Worshipped the gods of Rome

  188. And maybe the gods of Greece

  189. Just the same gods

  190. With different names

  191. We never hear about

  192. How it happens

  193. But we know that

  194. As an adult

  195. As a well educated man

  196. He was a doctor

  197. He became a Christian

  198. After having been a pagan

  199. For decades

  200. And

  201. He ends up

  202. Writing

  203. A biography of Jesus

  204. Because he was

  205. A well educated man

  206. And as a doctor

  207. He was concerned about facts

  208. And understanding things

  209. And so he interviewed

  210. A whole pile of eyewitnesses

  211. He read

  212. Official documents

  213. And he tells us

  214. A true story of Jesus

  215. Not a story

  216. Inspired by true events

  217. Or based on true events

  218. But a true story of Jesus

  219. And we have here

  220. This just very very simple

  221. Description of how Jesus

  222. Got born

  223. We'll just sort of read that

  224. And just to bring it

  225. Right to our minds

  226. It goes

  227. Verse 1

  228. In those days

  229. A decree went out

  230. From Caesar Augustus

  231. That all the world

  232. Should be registered

  233. This was the first registration

  234. When Quirinius

  235. Was governor of Syria

  236. And all went to be registered

  237. Each to his own town

  238. And Joseph also

  239. Went up from Galilee

  240. From the town of

  241. Nazareth

  242. To Judea

  243. To the city of David

  244. Which is called Bethlehem

  245. Because he was

  246. Of the house and lineage

  247. Of David

  248. To be registered

  249. With Mary

  250. His betrothed

  251. Who was with child

  252. And just sort of

  253. Pause there

  254. One of the things

  255. Which is so wonderful

  256. About this story

  257. Is you know

  258. A lot of times

  259. When I talk to people

  260. About what they believe

  261. Spiritually

  262. They'll tell me

  263. Abstractions

  264. They'll tell me

  265. Principles

  266. They'll tell me

  267. Different practices

  268. That they follow

  269. They tell me

  270. Some of the ideas

  271. That they hold

  272. As being very very precious

  273. And on one hand

  274. Of course

  275. We Christians

  276. Can understand that

  277. I mean we understand

  278. Certain practices

  279. And we have certain ideas

  280. But the thing

  281. Which is so wonderful

  282. About the Christian faith

  283. Is that it's

  284. It's rooted in history

  285. It's

  286. Luke claims to be

  287. Telling us

  288. A true story

  289. About something

  290. That happens

  291. To a man named

  292. Jesus

  293. And in the story

  294. Of his birth

  295. One of the things

  296. Which is so neat

  297. About this

  298. Is that it's

  299. Just like real life

  300. You know

  301. Just like in real life

  302. You know

  303. The politicians

  304. Trump makes a decision

  305. And he can make a decision

  306. And before you know it

  307. Fleets are in motion

  308. And armies are in motion

  309. And the whole Twitter sphere

  310. Is completely and utterly enraged

  311. And there's demonstrations

  312. On the street

  313. Or it can be the same

  314. For Putin

  315. It can be the same

  316. For Trudeau

  317. He can make a decision

  318. About who gets to have

  319. Summer jobs

  320. And the next thing you know

  321. The whole nation

  322. Has to move and bend

  323. And here we have

  324. Caesar Augustus

  325. He makes a decision

  326. That he has to have

  327. A better understanding

  328. Of who's in his empire

  329. So he can tax them better

  330. And so he can raise up

  331. Troops better

  332. And he makes this decision

  333. And before you know it

  334. Even something

  335. Joseph and Mary

  336. Whom he's never heard of

  337. And he's never heard of Jesus

  338. And he's probably never heard

  339. Of Jewish people

  340. And he's never read the Bible

  341. And he just makes this decision

  342. Of his own free will

  343. And people are moving

  344. All over the empire

  345. And in the process of it

  346. He causes events

  347. To just transpire

  348. So that Jesus fulfills

  349. In his birth

  350. A whole pile of prophecies

  351. Written anywhere from

  352. 400 to a thousand years earlier

  353. And that's really cool

  354. And so Joseph and Mary

  355. Find themselves in Bethlehem

  356. And in verse 7

  357. And she gave birth

  358. To her firstborn son

  359. And wrapped him

  360. In swaddling cloths

  361. And laid him in a manger

  362. Because there was no place

  363. For them in the inn

  364. And you know

  365. I talked about this

  366. A little bit yesterday

  367. Probably what's going on

  368. Here partially

  369. It doesn't have to be an inn

  370. It could just be a room

  371. Somewhere

  372. And the city was

  373. Piled with people

  374. And Joseph probably

  375. Had some relatives there

  376. But he was also

  377. Facing social ostracism

  378. Because he didn't divorce

  379. Or put Mary aside

  380. When she had a baby

  381. Because she was pregnant

  382. Out of wedlock

  383. And both of them

  384. Are living with that stigma

  385. And that social ostracism

  386. So the baby

  387. And it's very interesting

  388. Because this story

  389. Is going to tell us

  390. Remarkable things

  391. About who Jesus is

  392. But it tells us

  393. That Jesus is born

  394. Outside

  395. Not inside any room

  396. Or shelter

  397. But outside

  398. And after his birth

  399. They put him in a feeding trough

  400. Where animals would be fed

  401. Now one of the things

  402. Which is so cool

  403. About the Christian faith

  404. So neat about it

  405. Is that

  406. We believe

  407. That God keeps doing things

  408. And acting

  409. In our world

  410. And when God acts

  411. He doesn't just sort of act

  412. I mean sometimes

  413. He acts just in our lives

  414. Like that

  415. But in the Bible

  416. What it is

  417. Is that God acts

  418. And then he helps us

  419. To understand what he's done

  420. He tells us

  421. This is what I've done

  422. And this is what it means

  423. And often he tells us

  424. And this is how

  425. You're supposed to respond

  426. To respond correctly

  427. And so Luke

  428. Here gives us

  429. A bit of an explanation

  430. About the birth

  431. And it comes in the next few verses

  432. Look at verse 8

  433. And in the same region

  434. There were shepherds

  435. Out in the field

  436. Keeping watch over their flock

  437. By night

  438. And an angel of the Lord

  439. Appeared to them

  440. And the glory of the Lord

  441. Shone around them

  442. And they were filled

  443. With great fear

  444. Now just pause here

  445. For a second

  446. One of the things

  447. You need to understand

  448. About these shepherds

  449. Is that there's nothing

  450. Holy about them

  451. Now

  452. Maybe you could ask

  453. Major

  454. The Reverend Major Turner

  455. Or a couple of other things

  456. What's it like

  457. When there's a whole pile

  458. Of guys out in the bush

  459. And there's no women around

  460. I'm sure they're probably

  461. Spending all their time

  462. Praying

  463. Reading Shakespeare

  464. Some knitting

  465. Maybe

  466. So the thing about it

  467. Is you have to get rid

  468. Of all of this

  469. Pious imagery

  470. That we have

  471. About the Bible

  472. What Jesus is

  473. What the Bible is saying here

  474. Is there's a bunch of guys

  475. Out in the bush

  476. Without any women around

  477. And they were acting

  478. Like guys in the bush

  479. With no women around

  480. That's what they were doing

  481. And you can talk

  482. To a couple of guys

  483. About what that might have been

  484. At a bare minimum

  485. One of the ways

  486. That working class guys

  487. When they're in the bush

  488. Away from the woman

  489. One of the bare minimum

  490. Things they would do

  491. Is if they talked to each other

  492. They'd be insulting each other

  493. All the time

  494. Because that's how

  495. You communicate affection

  496. If you're a guy

  497. You insult the other person

  498. And there was probably

  499. Anyway

  500. We won't go any further with that

  501. But this is a before picture

  502. This isn't a whole pile

  503. Of people who were picked

  504. Because they were especially holy

  505. And that's probably part of the reason

  506. Why they're afraid

  507. An angel shows up

  508. Who knows what they were doing

  509. And they are completely

  510. And utterly terrified by it

  511. And in verse 10

  512. And the angel said to them

  513. Fear not

  514. For behold

  515. I bring you good news

  516. Of great joy

  517. That will be for all the people

  518. For unto you is born this day

  519. In the city of David

  520. A savior

  521. Who is Christ the Lord

  522. And this will be a sign for you

  523. You will find a baby

  524. Wrapped in swaddling cloths

  525. And lying in a manger

  526. Now just sort of pause there

  527. I don't know if you noticed

  528. The huge disconnect

  529. The angel said

  530. Listen

  531. First of all

  532. It's an angel who shows up

  533. To talk to these shepherds

  534. The original language

  535. Is he stands right

  536. He gets right in their face

  537. He stands right in front of them

  538. So the shepherds are all here

  539. The angel isn't sort of like

  540. Way back a kilometer

  541. Yelling at them

  542. The angel gets right in their face

  543. And the angel says

  544. I bring you good news

  545. Of great joy

  546. And he says

  547. In the city

  548. Is born a savior

  549. And he is the Lord

  550. And he is Christ

  551. It means that all of the Old Testament prophecies

  552. About however they worked

  553. About God's deliver

  554. It's all been fulfilled

  555. That baby is being born

  556. Just down the hill

  557. And then you'd expect to say

  558. And this is going to be the sign

  559. And the sign might be

  560. That if you go down there

  561. There's a thousand angels around him

  562. If you go down

  563. The whole village has come around

  564. And they're all praying

  565. And they're singing psalms

  566. Or maybe there's a whole pile

  567. Of army people

  568. Or there's some great majestic thing

  569. And that's what you expect him to say

  570. But the story takes a very, very funny turn

  571. This person who is the Savior

  572. And the Christ

  573. And the Lord

  574. He's lying in a manger

  575. He's lying in a feeding trough

  576. And so then in verse 13

  577. It says

  578. And suddenly there was

  579. With the angel

  580. A multitude of the heavenly host

  581. Praising God

  582. And by the way

  583. Whenever you see that word

  584. Heavenly host

  585. You know what it means

  586. It means an angel army

  587. It's one of those things

  588. That in a lot of modern liturgies

  589. They get rid of any reference

  590. To a host

  591. Because we have to all be pacifists nowadays

  592. And you can't have any reference

  593. To the military

  594. But what is there

  595. It's an angel army

  596. And the angel army

  597. Is singing

  598. And what are they saying?

  599. Glory to God in the highest

  600. And on earth peace

  601. Among those with whom he is pleased

  602. When the angels went away

  603. From them into heaven

  604. The shepherds said to one another

  605. Let us go over to Bethlehem

  606. And see this thing

  607. That has happened

  608. Which the Lord has made known to us

  609. And they went with haste

  610. And found Mary and Joseph

  611. And the babe line in a manger

  612. And when they saw it

  613. They made known the saying

  614. That had been told them

  615. Concerning this child

  616. And all who heard it

  617. Wondered at what the shepherds told them

  618. So they

  619. Here's one of the things

  620. Which is so cool about this

  621. You know

  622. My

  623. When you have a remarkable event

  624. You remember things

  625. Some of you know

  626. I have nine kids

  627. So

  628. I don't know

  629. There's

  630. Thousands of times

  631. You pushed a kid

  632. In a stroller

  633. Like I had thousands of times

  634. Where I did that

  635. But there's one particular time

  636. I was pushing with my wife

  637. Some of our kids in the stroller

  638. And I always remember

  639. That particular event

  640. Why do I remember that particular event?

  641. Because it happened

  642. Remember

  643. I don't know how many years ago

  644. Was it when all of the eastern seaboard

  645. Of Canada and the United States

  646. Lost their power?

  647. I can't remember how long ago that was

  648. But then everybody lost their power

  649. You might remember that

  650. And so we didn't have any power

  651. And it was really, really, really dark

  652. In the city

  653. It was very unusual

  654. Because there's no electricity anywhere

  655. And I remember

  656. We decided we'd go out for a walk

  657. It was like a July night or something

  658. We went out for a walk

  659. Pushing our little kids in the stroller

  660. And I can't remember which one was in the stroller

  661. But all of a sudden

  662. He excitedly or she excitedly said

  663. Look, the power's come back on

  664. And it was because a car was coming around the corner

  665. And my child thought

  666. That because the car had lights on

  667. It meant the power was coming back on

  668. And I mean, that's a nothing story

  669. But I always remember that

  670. I always remember that

  671. Because of the context of us having no power

  672. And the thing which is so neat about this story

  673. Is that in a sense

  674. Caesar Augustus organized

  675. And orchestrated a story

  676. So that 40 years later

  677. 30 years later

  678. When people are looking out at eyewitnesses

  679. They'd say

  680. Do you remember back

  681. When Caesar Augustus

  682. Made us all go back to Bethlehem

  683. And was there anything weird

  684. That happened that night

  685. And people would all go

  686. Oh yeah

  687. I could hardly get any sleep that night

  688. Because a woman who was outside

  689. Was giving birth to a baby

  690. And she kept screaming

  691. Because babies, when they get born

  692. It's not usually quiet

  693. Like without any drugs

  694. It's like there's lots of screaming

  695. And so probably for decades afterwards

  696. You know, people might not remember

  697. All sorts of other births

  698. But that birth

  699. They would remember

  700. And because they would remember that birth

  701. And because they hadn't been able

  702. To have any sleep

  703. There were probably lots of people

  704. Coming down to see

  705. What was going on with the woman

  706. And they would have seen the shepherds

  707. And they would have heard

  708. All the things that the shepherds had to say

  709. And it's one of the things

  710. Which is remarkable about this story

  711. That makes it so believable

  712. That when Luke was going to look

  713. For eyewitnesses to find out

  714. What happened

  715. He'd have all sorts of people

  716. Who could remember

  717. Because of that unique set

  718. Of circumstances

  719. Before we go any further

  720. Next video

  721. So, just to sort of bring this to

  722. Start to bring it to a bit of a conclusion

  723. What we hear in the Christmas story

  724. What Christmas Christmas is all about

  725. In secular Christmas

  726. Not that there's anything wrong

  727. With secular Christmas

  728. It's not that there's anything wrong

  729. With Canadian Christmas

  730. But Christian Christmas

  731. Is something different

  732. It emerges out of remembering

  733. And reconnecting

  734. And rejoicing

  735. In these foundational stories

  736. About the birth of Jesus

  737. At the heart of this

  738. Is, if you could put up

  739. The first point, Andrew

  740. At the heart of this

  741. Is Luke's story

  742. Is what the angels say

  743. The baby is

  744. It's what the angels tell the shepherds

  745. Who the baby is

  746. And the angels say

  747. That when we hear God

  748. We hear good news

  749. We hear good news from God

  750. That's what the angels say

  751. And the good news from God

  752. Is that our Lord and Savior

  753. Jesus Christ

  754. Is born

  755. It's news that comes from God

  756. It's news about who Jesus is

  757. And it's news that

  758. All of the prophecies are fulfilled

  759. That he is going to be the one

  760. Who is going to save us

  761. And it opens up this other thing

  762. That ultimately only God can save us

  763. And so when it says

  764. That he is Lord

  765. It has this double meaning

  766. It means that he is to be

  767. Lord of our lives

  768. But it also points to the fact

  769. That it's not just a human being

  770. Who has been born

  771. But that it is God

  772. The Son of God himself

  773. Who has been born

  774. Who has come to save us

  775. If we could see the next video

  776. Which is silence and fury

  777. That will help bring this home

  778. If you could put up the next point

  779. One of the things

  780. Which is so remarkable

  781. About this story

  782. Is not just that

  783. God himself comes

  784. And is born in a stable

  785. Not just that he is the one

  786. Who is going to save us

  787. Not just that he is the one

  788. Who is Lord

  789. Not just that he is the one

  790. Who is keeping

  791. God is showing

  792. That God has kept

  793. All of his promises

  794. To send a Savior

  795. And deliver

  796. But hidden in this story

  797. And a part that often

  798. Gives us lots of trouble

  799. Is this other idea

  800. That everything about

  801. What God is doing

  802. In the person of Jesus

  803. Is all grace

  804. We hear good news from God

  805. Our faith in him

  806. Is all grace

  807. From beginning to end

  808. And every moment in between

  809. It's all grace

  810. And it comes in this odd part

  811. Of the angel song

  812. Which often troubles people

  813. But it shouldn't trouble you

  814. Because what it's saying

  815. Is exactly what I have

  816. Up there

  817. It says in the song

  818. Of the angels

  819. Glory to God in the highest

  820. And on earth peace

  821. Among those with whom

  822. He is pleased

  823. And the message is

  824. Is that because of

  825. The birth of this baby

  826. There is going to be

  827. A means that God

  828. Has provided

  829. Whereby human beings

  830. Can once again

  831. Be at peace with God

  832. We've been at enmity

  833. With God

  834. We have been enemies

  835. Of God

  836. God himself

  837. Is doing something

  838. To make peace

  839. With himself

  840. And it says

  841. On those whom

  842. He has favor

  843. And whom he has blessing

  844. And the wonderful thing

  845. Is this news

  846. All comes to shepherds

  847. They're once again

  848. A group of guys

  849. Out in the bush

  850. Without the women

  851. Not doing holy things

  852. Probably

  853. And the message

  854. Comes to them

  855. And this is the wonderful thing

  856. It's out of God's grace

  857. That you hear about Jesus

  858. It's out of God's grace

  859. That you turn your heart to him

  860. When you turn your heart to him

  861. What he gives you is grace

  862. Which is unmerited kindness

  863. And what it is

  864. And so at every point in time

  865. It's not as if you have to

  866. Live a good life

  867. And finally God

  868. Will show you grace

  869. It's not as if you have to

  870. Be successful

  871. It's not as if you have to

  872. Be a winner

  873. It's not as if you have to

  874. Be beautiful

  875. It's not as if you have to

  876. Be just anything like that

  877. You can be broken

  878. You can be anything

  879. And that God

  880. Comes to you

  881. With unmerited kindness

  882. That you might turn to him

  883. And when you turn to him

  884. You only receive

  885. Unmerited kindness

  886. And when you walk with Jesus

  887. All you ever receive from him

  888. Is unmerited kindness

  889. And mercy

  890. And that's what the angels

  891. Are saying

  892. God is providing

  893. The means by which

  894. We can be at peace

  895. With him

  896. And everything about this

  897. Is grace

  898. Unmerited favor

  899. Unmerited favor

  900. You don't have to become

  901. Purified

  902. Before you know something

  903. And before you can

  904. Have peace with God

  905. It begins with having

  906. Peace with God

  907. And that begins

  908. To have a way

  909. By which you can start

  910. To see the world

  911. Different

  912. And start to live

  913. A different type of life

  914. If you could put up

  915. The next point Andrew

  916. That would be very

  917. Very great

  918. You see

  919. What we need to do

  920. Is to pray

  921. That the Lord

  922. Will grow in us

  923. A new sense

  924. Of identity and self

  925. As I receive

  926. As you receive

  927. As we receive

  928. And ponder

  929. Your good news

  930. God's good news

  931. You see

  932. Because what happens

  933. Is the way

  934. That all religions

  935. Sean did a wonderful sermon

  936. I don't know how many years ago

  937. How many months ago it was

  938. Where he talks about

  939. How every different system

  940. Of thought

  941. Or religion

  942. Or ideology

  943. It's all about a matter

  944. Of you have to

  945. Purify yourself

  946. In some way

  947. And after you've

  948. Purified yourself

  949. In some way

  950. Then maybe you start

  951. To get some type

  952. Of illumination

  953. And knowledge

  954. And after you've

  955. Been purified

  956. And you have

  957. Some illumination

  958. And knowledge

  959. Then you can finally

  960. Have union with God

  961. And the good news

  962. Of the gospel

  963. Is that it's

  964. The complete

  965. Opposite process

  966. That what happens

  967. Is completely

  968. And utterly

  969. Out of grace

  970. You put your faith

  971. And trust in Jesus

  972. And you have peace

  973. With God

  974. And union with God

  975. And as that starts

  976. To grip your identity

  977. And your self

  978. Understanding of who you are

  979. It starts to illuminate you

  980. You have the security

  981. To start to look within you

  982. And you see the things

  983. Within you

  984. That have to be dealt with

  985. And have to be changed

  986. And it gives illumination

  987. About how generosity

  988. Has to have a bigger part

  989. Of your life

  990. Or love

  991. Or forgiveness

  992. And as this story

  993. Grips you

  994. It starts to give you

  995. A way of seeing yourself

  996. And identifying yourself

  997. And understanding who you are

  998. That creates the energy

  999. To start to change

  1000. How you live

  1001. That's the gospel

  1002. So folks

  1003. We're going to have

  1004. One more video

  1005. To wrap this up

  1006. If you could just

1007. Put up the final point

  1008. Though before we have

  1009. The video

  1010. Here's how

  1011. Here's

  1012. You see

  1013. The Christmas stories

  1014. Are to start

  1015. To free us

  1016. And form us

  1017. Into how we celebrate

  1018. Christmas

1019. And this is the entire

  1020. Old Testament pattern

1021. About how you do that

  1022. That we celebrate

  1023. By remembering with others

  1024. That's what we're doing tonight

1025. We remember who Jesus is

1026. And what he did for us

  1027. With others

  1028. We rejoice with others

  1029. We recommit to Jesus

  1030. With others

  1031. Well and then

  1032. Most of us

1033. Will do this either tonight

  1034. Or tomorrow

  1035. We feast

  1036. Hopefully with others

1037. Make sure you invite others along

1038. And that's what we do

  1039. We come together

  1040. To remember Jesus

1041. And as we remember Jesus

1042. We get more and more

  1043. Gripped by it

1044. And it starts to form us

  1045. This wonderful video

  1046. Which we'll have

  1047. In closing

  1048. It's just a wonderful

1049. Telling of the Christmas story

  1050. And it's a wonderful

  1051. Testimony of a person

  1052. Who just realized

  1053. That even though

  1054. She was a Christian

1055. She was finding her identity

  1056. And self

  1057. Sense of worth

1058. In all the wrong places

1059. And she needed to be

  1060. Once again

1061. Just gripped by the gospel

  1062. This will be

1063. We'll see you with this

1064. And then we'll close in prayer

  1065. I know

  1066. It's no one's fault

  1067. It's no one's fault

  1068. That someone is born

  1069. With a disability

1070. But then you still feel like

1071. But why did this happen to us?

1072. Welcome to all of you

  1073. Please take a seat

1074. We want to now share

  1075. A nativity treat

  1076. This story of Christmas

1077. We tell it in rhyme

  1078. Some actors have lines

1079. While some of us mime

  1080. I was overwhelmed

  1081. With grief

  1082. At the loss

  1083. I thought

  1084. A beautiful baby

  1085. Has got down syndrome

  1086. And it's such a disaster

  1087. Meanwhile

  1088. Great Caesar

  1089. Augustus

  1090. In rhyme

  1091. Made a decree

  1092. Return to your home

  1093. For Joseph's ruling

  1094. Met Wesleyan town

1095. So they rode on their donkey

  1096. All the way down

  1097. God didn't give me

  1098. A straightforward answer

  1099. Of why this happened

  1100. It just took time

  1101. For me to realise

  1102. God's answer was

  1103. It wasn't so much

1104. What was wrong with Lever

1105. As much as there was

  1106. Something wrong

1107. With the way I was thinking

  1108. Mary was speechless

  1109. She didn't know

  1110. How these things

  1111. Could have happened

  1112. But still she bowed

  1113. I think of Mary

1114. Of all she goes through

  1115. It's not her plan

  1116. It's God's plan

1117. She just goes with it

  1118. She's humble

  1119. She's calm

  1120. She's reassured

  1121. By the fact

  1122. That everything's

  1123. Going to be okay

1124. For he has remembered me

  1125. His lonely servant

  1126. From now on

  1127. All the people

  1128. Will call me happy

  1129. He has brought down

1130. My king from the throne

1131. And lift up the lonely

  1132. What we learnt

1133. Was that God was with us

  1134. God suffered with us

  1135. And he gave us

  1136. The most beautiful child

1137. And there was no reason

  1138. For me to grieve

  1139. Or compare her

  1140. Or you know

  1141. Feel sorry for her

  1142. In my old view

  1143. Before she taught me

1144. I thought she would lack

  1145. She's not lacking

  1146. So gathered around

1147. That we may be void

  1148. All people are welcome

  1149. To know heaven's joy

  1150. From angels to donkeys

  1151. From shepherds to kings

  1152. The little Lord Jesus

  1153. God's miracle he brings

1154. He came to our darkness

  1155. From heaven above

1156. He stooped to the prim

1157. And the cross out of love

1158. He shed in our weakness

  1159. And weakness and mess

1160. And still he embraced us

  1161. Nevertheless

  1162. If you're feeling rejected

  1163. Exclude you to stranger

  1164. Remember the one

1165. Who came down to the manger

  1166. That a repente

  1167. About who came into

  1168. The Skywalker

  1169. Only now

  1170. The man

  1171. I wish

  1172. The Lord

  1173. And still there

  1174. Is none

  1175. That we

  1176. Send

  1177. God's

  1178. And still there

  1179. To rest

  1180. Our

  1181. ชello

  1182. This

  1183. His

  1184. Is

  1185. Is

  1186. ывайтесь

  1187. Or

  1188. Michele

  1189. Further

  1190. centimeters

  1191. rite

  1192. anche

  1193. Year

  1194. Amen.

1195. Please stand and we'll just close this with a prayer.

  1196. Let's stand.

1197. Father, thank you for the gift of Jesus.

1198. Thank you that he comes down to share the mess and the complexity of our lives,

1199. that he comes to bear the sin that we cannot deal with.

1200. He comes to bear the shame that we cannot deal with.

1201. He comes to deal with the accusations that we cannot deal with.

1202. And we thank you, Father, that he deals with all of these things when he dies on the cross.

1203. But we also thank you that, Father, his perfect life clothes us as well.

1204. That when we put our faith and trust in Jesus, it's not just what he takes away, but what he gives us.

1205. And we thank and praise you, Father, that when we put our faith and trust in Jesus,

1206. he is with us every day.

1207. And he is with us in our weakness.

1208. And he's with us when we're anxious.

1209. And so we ask, Father, that the Holy Spirit would grip us with this story of who Jesus is,

1210. remembering that the cradle reveals what his lordship is like in our lives.

1211. And grant us a deeper trust in him that he might form how we understand who we are and what our hope is.

1212. And all these things we ask in the name of Jesus, your son and your savior.

  1213. Amen.
