  1. God, thank you so much for your presence.

  2. God, thank you for your word, the Bible.

  3. And as you have throughout the history,

  4. throughout time, you've spoken to your people.

  5. God, I pray that once again you would speak to us,

  6. that we might not just hear my words today,

  7. but that we would actually hear from you.

  8. Those who know you and are so familiar

  9. with the Christmas story

  10. might have a fresh encounter with you.

  11. And that those who are still wrestling or struggling

  12. or just not even believing that you're real.

  13. God, in your love and mercy,

  14. would you do what only you can do

  15. and reveal yourself to us,

  16. that every one of us in this room

  17. would know you personally and intimately

  18. in a way that sets us free and brings us to life.

  19. In Jesus' name, amen.

  20. Please be seated.

  21. Have you ever walked into a room

  22. in the middle of a story

  23. and found that what you're hearing

  24. is extremely bizarre?

  25. And you kind of like make a face

  26. or maybe you say something

  27. and they're like,

  28. oh no, you don't understand.

  29. And you realize that

  30. coming into the middle of a story,

  31. you've misunderstood what you're hearing.

  32. Or have you ever thought that

  33. you found that you really thought

  34. you totally understood what was happening,

  35. but then once you find out that,

  36. again, you walked in the middle of a story,

  37. that there's actually so much more depth

  38. and vibrancy to a story

  39. than you thought you knew.

  40. Well, that has definitely been

  41. a real experience for me.

  42. And I believe it's actually an experience

  43. that every one of us experiences

  44. every year at Christmastime,

  45. though many of us don't even know it.

  46. And that's because if you were to ask someone,

  47. what's the beginning of the Christmas story?

  48. They might start with the angel

  49. appearing to Mary

  50. and telling her about

  51. how she is soon to conceive

  52. a miraculous child, God's own son.

  53. Or maybe those who really know their Bibles

  54. will start with the scene

  55. where Mary's cousin-in-law was in the temple.

  56. He's a priest.

  57. An angel comes to him

  58. and tells him about his wife

  59. coming pregnant with John the Baptist

  60. as the child.

  61. So there might be various ways

  62. that you start the Christmas story,

  63. but we always start with the New Testament,

  64. with the Gospels accounts.

  65. However, if that's how we tell the Christmas story,

  66. we're actually starting

  67. in the middle of the story.

  68. And as a result,

  69. either we're misunderstanding

  70. what the Christmas is all about,

  71. or though we might get it,

  72. it is so much smaller

  73. than the real vibrant story of Christmas

  74. if we were only to start at the beginning.

  75. And so today I'm going to be preaching

  76. a Christmas message

  77. from a page of the Bible

  78. that I've never heard

  79. a Christmas message from.

  80. So if you have your Bibles,

  81. turn to Nehemiah 13.

  82. You might have trouble finding it.

  83. No shade thrown your way.

  84. Nehemiah is found

  85. in the first half of the Bible,

  86. a bit before Psalms.

  87. It's before Job.

  88. It's before Esther.

  89. Right before Esther.

  90. You can find it.

  91. Or you can just go to the index

  92. at the start of your Bible.

  93. It's a rare book.

  94. What you might not be familiar

  95. with the fact that Nehemiah,

  96. though it's in the middle

  97. of the Old Testament,

  98. it's actually the final pages

  99. of the Old Testament.

  100. The Old Testament has historical books,

  101. and it has poetry,

  102. it has prophecy,

  103. but Nehemiah is the final,

  104. it takes place as the final moments

  105. in the history of the Old Testament.

  106. So the final words of Nehemiah

  107. are the final moments

  108. of the Old Testament.

  109. And so I'm going to be preaching

  110. from the final moments

  111. of the book of Nehemiah,

  112. which is the final moments

  113. of the Old Testament,

  114. but if we're really going to try

  115. to start not at the middle

  116. of a story,

  117. we really should back up

  118. to the very beginning.

  119. Many of you will be familiar

  120. with the account

  121. that the Bible tells us,

  122. that at the very beginning

  123. of a time,

  124. there was a being named God

  125. who created the universe.

  126. And he created it

  127. in perfect harmony,

  128. that there was no decay,

  129. there was no despair,

  130. there was no death.

  131. Everything was in harmony.

  132. But humankind rebelled

  133. against this good and loving God,

  134. and in so doing,

  135. we broke the universe,

  136. and introduced decay,

  137. and grudges,

  138. and gossip,

  139. and lies,

  140. and mistrust,

  141. and even death.

  142. And that not only

  143. did we break the universe,

  144. but in our rebellion,

  145. the good and loving,

  146. just judge of the whole earth,

  147. God,

  148. pronounced judgment

  149. and a curse

  150. upon all that is.

  151. But beautifully

  152. and mercifully,

  153. in the very moment

  154. that he pronounces this curse,

  155. judgment upon the universe,

  156. he gives a promise.

  157. He promises that he will

  158. restore harmony

  159. to the earth.

  160. We get this little glimpse

  161. of this promise.

  162. And then as the story,

  163. the true story

  164. of the Bible unfolds,

  165. you see that God

  166. brings more and more clarity

  167. as to how he's going to

  168. restore harmony

  169. and love to the world.

  170. Part of the breaking

  171. of the universe

  172. was in our rebellion,

  173. in our sin against God,

  174. because he's pure

  175. and we've defiled ourselves,

  176. there's this distance

  177. between us and God.

  178. That before,

  179. humankind used to walk with God,

  180. but now he's invisible to us,

  181. for he's too pure

  182. for our broken eyes to see.

  183. And so as the story

  184. of the Bible unfolds,

  185. we see,

  186. and this isn't myth

  187. or legend,

  188. but we see in real history

  189. that God called

  190. a people to himself,

  191. a people group,

  192. the people of Israel.

  193. And he gave the people

  194. of Israel

  195. his holy ways

  196. of harmony and love.

  197. And more than anything,

  198. he not only gave them

  199. his ways,

  200. his good laws,

  201. he not only gave them

  202. a good country to have,

  203. but the most significant

  204. and special thing,

  205. most magnificent of all,

  206. which made them

  207. the holy people,

  208. is that he gave them

  209. his presence.

  210. And so in the center

  211. of Israel,

  212. there was a temple.

  213. And in the temple,

  214. there was not an idol

  215. to remind them of a God,

  216. but rather the very presence

  217. of God himself

  218. in a very thick and real way.

  219. And yet the people of God,

  220. the people of Israel,

  221. as you can read

  222. through the Bible,

  223. they continue to rebel

  224. against them

  225. and defile themselves

  226. and do horrific things.

  227. And they end up

  228. offering children

  229. burning up the children

  230. as a worship to God,

  231. which is a horrific,

  232. ungodly practice.

  233. And they do all manner

  234. of evil things.

  235. And God is a good God,

  236. a just God.

  237. And so he continues

  238. to call them

  239. to turn away from that.

  240. And as he does,

  241. he warns them,

  242. if they are not

  243. to walk in God's ways

  244. of love and harmony

  245. and justice,

  246. that he will punish them,

  247. that he will remove them

  248. from their land,

  249. that he will take away

  250. his presence from them.

  251. And over time,

  252. he finally did that.

  253. And it's recorded in history

  254. that the Babylonian kingdom

  255. ripped the people of Israel

  256. from the land,

  257. took them from Jerusalem,

  258. and they destroyed the temple.

  259. And it's recorded for us

  260. in the Bible

  261. that God removed his presence

  262. from the temple,

  263. from his people.

  264. But along the way,

  265. even in the warnings

  266. of judgment,

  267. even before judgment came,

  268. God includes in those warnings

  269. his tender love

  270. toward them

  271. and all the earth,

  272. saying that even though

  273. he would judge them,

  274. even though he would punish

  275. the people of Israel,

  276. he will restore

  277. not only the people

  278. of Israel to the land,

  279. but also that he will bring

  280. healing to the whole earth.

  281. And most significant of all,

  282. that he will restore

  283. his presence to his people,

  284. that he will bring the people

  285. back to Israel,

  286. and that he will restore

  287. his presence in the temple

  288. and throughout all the earth.

  289. And so along the way,

  290. we finally get to the book

  291. of Nehemiah,

  292. the final historical book

  293. in the Bible,

  294. in the Old Testament,

  295. and what we see here

  296. is that there are

  297. three great leaders.

  298. First Zerubbabel,

  299. then a man named Ezra,

  300. and then Nehemiah,

  301. of whom this book is named.

  302. Zerubbabel was a priest

  303. and he helped rebuild

  304. a broken temple.

  305. And then Ezra was a scribe

  306. and he helped call the people

  307. back to holiness

  308. and to knowing God's ways.

  309. And then came Nehemiah.

  310. He's the most vibrant of all.

  311. And he helped them rebuild

  312. the wall of Jerusalem.

  313. And he not only helped them

  314. rebuild the wall

  315. to reestablish the city of God,

  316. but he calls the people

  317. to holiness.

  318. And this book is so upbeat.

  319. If you haven't read it,

  320. I recommend it.

  321. You see that in record time

  322. the people come together

  323. and rebuild the wall.

  324. And then he calls the people

  325. back to the holy feasts

  326. and they have this incredible,

  327. massive celebration

  328. of the Passover.

  329. And he calls the people

  330. to repentance.

  331. And the people,

  332. with one voice,

  333. confess their sin.

  334. It's beautiful,

  335. it's humble,

  336. and it's holy.

  337. And then the people

  338. not only confess their sin,

  339. but they covenant themselves

  340. afresh to God

  341. and say,

  342. God, we will follow you.

  343. We will observe your holy ways.

  344. We will do the Sabbath

  345. and we will love you.

  346. And they turn away

  347. from their defilements.

  348. And there's so much hope.

  349. And if that's not enough,

  350. the people gather together

  351. and they sing worship.

  352. They declare their love for God

  353. through song.

  354. And it's so loud.

  355. It says that the noise of Jerusalem

  356. was heard very far away.

  357. That's how loud they sang.

  358. Thank you.

  359. And so,

  360. there's so much hope.

  361. And then we come

  362. to the final pages

  363. of this hope-filled book,

  364. the final pages

  365. of the Old Testament.

  366. And yet,

  367. it all just crumbles

  368. in Nehemiah's hand.

  369. Nehemiah discovers

  370. that the priests,

  371. that people aren't giving

  372. to the priests

  373. in the temple

  374. the food that they're deserved.

  375. And so the priests

  376. have gone away

  377. and that the temple

  378. is forsaken

  379. and that the people

  380. aren't following God's ways.

  381. And he begins to panic.

  382. Verse 10,

  383. Nehemiah writes,

  384. I also found out

  385. that the portions

  386. of the Levites

  387. had not been given to them

  388. so that the Levites,

  389. the priests,

  390. and the singers

  391. who did the work of God

  392. had fled each to his field.

  393. So I confronted the officials

  394. and said,

  395. why is the house of God forsaken?

  396. And I gathered them together

  397. and set them in their stations.

  398. Go down to verse 14.

  399. Remember me,

  400. oh my God,

  401. concerning this

  402. and do not wipe out

  403. my good deeds

  404. that I have done

  405. for the house of my God,

  406. the temple,

  407. and for his service.

  408. In those days,

  409. I saw in Judah

  410. people treading wine presses

  411. on the Sabbath.

  412. They're violating the Holy Sabbath.

  413. Down to verse 17.

  414. Then I confronted

  415. the nobles of Judah

  416. and said to them,

  417. why is this evil thing

  418. that you are doing

  419. profaning the Sabbath?

  420. What is this evil thing

  421. that you're doing

  422. profaning the Sabbath?

  423. Did not your fathers

  424. act in this way

  425. and did not our God

  426. bring all this disaster

  427. on us

  428. and on this city,

  429. Jerusalem?

  430. Now you are bringing

  431. more wrath,

  432. more judgment

  433. on Israel

  434. by profaning the Sabbath.

  435. He continues on

  436. writing about

  437. the horrific things

  438. going on

  439. and how he's trying

  440. to fight against it.

  441. In verse 25,

  442. he writes about

  443. how the people

  444. of God

  445. have married foreigners

  446. who do not believe

  447. in God

  448. and this is one

  449. of the practices

  450. that actually led

  451. originally to them

  452. being removed

  453. from the land

  454. and he's panicking

  455. over seeing the people

  456. turning back

  457. to these evil things.

  458. In verse 25,

  459. and I confronted them

  460. and cursed them

  461. and beat some of them

  462. and pulled out

  463. their hair.

  464. He didn't just

  465. pull on their hair,

  466. he pulled out

  467. their hair

  468. and I made them

  469. take an oath

  470. in the name of God

  471. saying,

  472. you shall not give

  473. your daughters

  474. to their sons

  475. or take their daughters

  476. for your sons

  477. or for yourselves.

  478. Did not Solomon,

  479. king of Israel,

  480. sin on account

  481. of such women?

  482. Among the many nations,

  483. there was no king

  484. like him

  485. and he was beloved

  486. by his God

  487. and God made him

  488. king over all Israel.

  489. Nevertheless,

  490. foreign women

  491. made even him

  492. to sin.

  493. Shall we then

  494. listen to you

  495. and do all this

  496. great evil

  497. and act treacherously

  498. against our God

  499. by marrying foreign women?

  500. You hear Nehemiah's

  501. heart is in his throat.

  502. You hear the panic

  503. in his voice.

  504. He's yelling

  505. at the people.

  506. He's seeing these people

  507. turn from sin

  508. and walk in God's ways

  509. and rededicate themselves

  510. and rededicate the temple.

  511. Yet he just sees them

  512. turning again

  513. to these evil,

  514. defiling practices.

  515. He's tried so hard

  516. and he's yelling at them.

  517. He beats them

  518. and he pulls up their hair.

  519. You'll see

  520. if you read through

  521. the whole chapter

  522. in this whole book

  523. that multiple times

  524. he forces the people

  525. to divorce these people.

  526. They weren't supposed

  527. to marry.

  528. And as you're looking

  529. at Nehemiah,

  530. you must be asking

  531. the question,

  532. is this how a man

  533. of God acts?

  534. And the answer is no.

  535. He actually,

  536. in his zealousness

  537. to try to make

  538. the people holy,

  539. he actually starts

  540. himself sinning.

  541. In no place

  542. does the Bible

  543. commission a man

  544. or a woman of God

  545. to be pulling out

  546. people's hair

  547. or to be beating people.

  548. In fact,

  549. the book of Malachi

  550. is the book of prophecy

  551. that takes place

  552. at the same time

  553. as this.

  554. And Malachi,

  555. God through,

  556. the prophet,

  557. is actually saying,

  558. guys,

  559. stop doing divorce.

  560. This is unholy.

  561. And yet,

  562. you see Nehemiah

  563. forcing the people

  564. to divorce

  565. in his zealousness

  566. to try to make them holy.

  567. See that Nehemiah

  568. is going beyond

  569. God's ways

  570. and actually turning

  571. from God's ways

  572. and trying to turn

  573. the people to God.

  574. He's panicking,

  575. he's freaking out,

  576. and he's doing things

  577. he shouldn't.

  578. What's happening?

  579. Well,

  580. I mentioned that so much

  581. of this book

  582. is hope-filled,

  583. but there's actually

  584. a moment

  585. that if you and I

  586. aren't familiar

  587. with the true big story

  588. of the Bible,

  589. we might miss.

  590. But the people

  591. would not have missed it.

  592. You see,

  593. among all the hope

  594. and the joy

  595. that they have rebuilt

  596. the city,

  597. that they've rebuilt

  598. the temple,

  599. and that they dedicate it

  600. to God

  601. and commit themselves

  602. to him.

  603. And if you're not

  604. familiar with the Bible,

  605. or even if you are,

  606. but whatever,

  607. you may have missed

  608. the fact that even

  609. as it sounds all happy

  610. and you keep reading,

  611. there's actually

  612. this haunting moment

  613. that they're still

  614. in the midst of

  615. when things begin

  616. to crumble.

  617. But it's a haunting

  618. moment that they're

  619. even in the midst of,

  620. even while they're

  621. feasting

  622. or while they're singing

  623. and making such noise

  624. to God.

  625. And the people,

  626. the Jewish people

  627. who were reading this

  628. would not have missed it.

  629. And that's because

  630. centuries before

  631. when they built

  632. Solomon's temple

  633. and Solomon,

  634. the leader,

  635. like Nehemiah,

  636. the leader,

  637. Solomon dedicates

  638. the temple to God

  639. and there's this

  640. rush of wind

  641. and this thick cloud

  642. of God's presence.

  643. It's hard to explain,

  644. but it's like there's

  645. this thick fog

  646. that comes into the temple

  647. and it's holy

  648. and the people

  649. can feel

  650. and get this glimpse

  651. of the presence of God

  652. and King Solomon,

  653. the great king

  654. and everyone else,

  655. falls on their faces

  656. in worship.

  657. King Solomon acknowledging

  658. that there's a king above him,

  659. God the king.

  660. And it's this holy,

  661. sacred,

  662. special moment

  663. that they record,

  664. they write down,

  665. eyewitnesses write down.

  666. And that's what they expect.

  667. And they expect it

  668. not just because

  669. it happened before,

  670. but because in the prophecies

  671. and before this,

  672. God said that he would

  673. restore the people

  674. to Israel,

  675. that he would rebuild

  676. the temple,

  677. reestablish Jerusalem,

  678. but most important of all,

  679. he would return his presence

  680. to the temple,

  681. to Israel,

  682. to the earth.

  683. And so they've done everything,

  684. they've seen it,

  685. the people came back

  686. to Israel

  687. and they rebuilt the temple

  688. and all that stuff,

  689. every part of the prophecy

  690. has come true

  691. except for one,

  692. the most important thing,

  693. the presence of God.

  694. They rededicate the temple,

  695. this is the moment

  696. that they were waiting for,

  697. for God's presence

  698. to rush in

  699. for that thick cloud

  700. that descended in the past.

  701. But nothing happens.

  702. And they continue on,

  703. they sing

  704. and it's recorded for us

  705. to the beautiful noise

  706. of their singing

  707. filled Israel,

  708. but where's God's presence?

  709. This is the most significant thing.

  710. Where is God's presence?

  711. And so if you go back

  712. to verse 11,

  713. so he confronted the officials

  714. and said,

  715. why is the house of God forsaken?

  716. You hear panic

  717. in Nehemiah's voice.

  718. Why is the house of God forsaken?

  719. And on first reading,

  720. it sounds like he's simply speaking

  721. of how they have neglected

  722. the house of God.

  723. But the people

  724. who were first reading this,

  725. the Jewish people

  726. would hear in this as well,

  727. why is the house of God forsaken?

  728. Of the presence of God.

  729. That's the thing

  730. that causes the most panic

  731. for Nehemiah.

  732. Where is the presence of God?

  733. A temple without God's presence

  734. is just an empty room.

  735. Where is the presence of God?

  736. What you see

  737. as you read through this book,

  738. Nehemiah,

  739. the final pages

  740. before the New Testament,

  741. is that the people

  742. have tried so hard.

  743. Nehemiah and the people of Israel

  744. have tried so hard

  745. to be moral.

  746. They've tried so hard

  747. to obey God,

  748. to be good people,

  749. to be religious people,

  750. and yet you see it crumbling

  751. that these people

  752. who have promised

  753. to not marry the pagans

  754. have once again

  755. started marrying pagans

  756. and having sexual relations

  757. with them.

  758. And the people

  759. who've covenanted

  760. to obey the Sabbath

  761. are now forsaking the Sabbath

  762. and they're neglecting the temple

  763. and they're just,

  764. despite their best efforts,

  765. perhaps you can relate to that.

  766. You've promised yourself

  767. to do better.

  768. You've promised yourself

  769. to not turn to

  770. whatever dirty habits.

  771. You've promised yourself

  772. not to gossip

  773. or tell lies.

  774. You've promised yourself

  775. to be more holy

  776. and yet you find yourself

  777. returning to defiling things.

  778. We try so hard.

  779. And the pages of Nehemiah,

  780. the pages of the Old Testament

  781. end with this.

  782. Thus I cleanse them

  783. from everything foreign

  784. and I establish the duties

  785. of the priests and Levites,

  786. each in his work.

  787. I provide for the wood offering

  788. at appointed times

  789. and for the first fruits.

  790. Remember me,

  791. oh my God, forget.

  792. And it ends.

  793. It doesn't end with

  794. the people walking in holiness.

  795. It ends with Nehemiah's effort.

  796. I did this and I did that.

  797. Remember me, God.

  798. As it ends,

  799. there's this hauntedness,

  800. this question

  801. that remains unanswered.

  802. Where is God's presence?

  803. That is a question

  804. they would have been asking

  805. those days following

  806. the dedication of the temple.

  807. And a question

  808. that continues to be asked,

  809. unanswered,

  810. as those days turned into months,

  811. turned into years,

  812. turned into decades.

  813. And finally,

  814. four centuries go by.

  815. The people of Israel

  816. had been used to

  817. the voice of God

  818. through the prophets

  819. and the poets

  820. and through the

  821. anointed kings sometimes.

  822. Always God had found a way

  823. to break through

  824. their defilement

  825. and break through

  826. their busyness

  827. and to speak into their lives.

  828. And yet here,

  829. as they're waiting

  830. for God's presence

  831. to return,

  832. there's no cloud,

  833. there's nothing,

  834. nor is there a voice,

  835. nor is there a prophet

  836. or a seer

  837. or anything,

  838. and they wait.

  839. It was in that context

  840. of brokenness,

  841. in that context

  842. of the people's best efforts

  843. that are still

  844. not good enough,

  845. trying to be holy

  846. but defiling themselves,

  847. trying to be moral

  848. but still failing

  849. themselves and God.

  850. Silent,

  851. panic,

  852. waiting,

  853. where is God?

  854. That the Christmas story

  855. bursts open.

  856. That there is a priest

  857. who's in the,

  858. in a sense,

  859. in the empty temple

  860. in a temple

  861. without the thick presence

  862. of God

  863. and he's just doing his job

  864. as they've done for years

  865. in silence,

  866. not expecting God

  867. to ever speak

  868. and all of a sudden

  869. this angel shows up.

  870. They haven't seen angels

  871. in centuries.

  872. This angel shows up

  873. and speaks of this

  874. miracle son

  875. named John the Baptist

  876. who's going to prepare

  877. the way for the Lord.

  878. And then months later

  879. an angel shows up

  880. to Mary

  881. and says that she will

  882. have a son

  883. to name him Jesus

  884. because he will save

  885. the people from their sin.

  886. And then an angel

  887. shows up to Joseph

  888. and says

  889. that this son,

  890. one of his names

  891. he will be called

  892. is Emmanuel,

  893. God with us.

  894. that is the name

  895. that is the answer

  896. to the question

  897. where is God's presence?

  898. We find there

  899. that this baby Jesus

  900. is not simply a prophet

  901. nor will he be

  902. some moral teacher

  903. but that he is

  904. the son of God,

  905. God himself.

  906. That as,

  907. that Jesus the baby

  908. is brought into the temple

  909. for dedication

  910. that that is the moment

  911. long foretold

  912. where God comes back

  913. into the temple.

  914. And you can see it

  915. where there's Anna

  916. the prophetess

  917. and,

  918. and Simeon,

  919. Simon

  920. as they wait.

  921. They've been waiting

  922. for years,

  923. praying,

  924. praying,

  925. waiting for God's presence,

  926. waiting for God's presence.

  927. And you can read about it

  928. in the Christmas story

  929. where they rejoice.

  930. They hold the baby

  931. and rejoice

  932. that God has come back

  933. to the temple.

  934. That it's not a cloud

  935. or some kind of

  936. inanimate matter

  937. like that

  938. but it's actually

  939. God himself.

  940. Jesus,

  941. Emmanuel,

  942. God is with us.

  943. That's the context

  944. of Jesus.

  945. That's the context

  946. of the Christmas story.

  947. That's the miracle

  948. for all of you

  949. with nativity scenes

  950. in your homes

  951. of the little baby

  952. in the manger

  953. that it's God

  954. has come

  955. not just to Israel

  956. but to the earth.

  957. That people,

  958. as people walk

  959. with Jesus

  960. through Israel

  961. that they are once again

  962. walking with God

  963. as we used to do

  964. in the garden.

  965. And you can read

  966. through the gospel stories

  967. the teachings of Jesus

  968. as he once again

  969. declares and reveals

  970. God's holy ways

  971. and moral laws

  972. and the ways of harmony

  973. and love and justice.

  974. But if you simply

  975. were to end the story there

  976. then just as you

  977. started the Christmas story

  978. in the middle

  979. so we end the story

  980. before it ends.

  981. Because the reason

  982. for Jesus

  983. to enter into the earth

  984. not just like a cloud

  985. but as a human

  986. is because God himself

  987. had decided

  988. just as it was prophesied

  989. at the beginning

  990. of time

  991. that he would crush

  992. our enemies.

  993. That he would

  994. defeat death

  995. through his own death

  996. on the cross.

  997. That he had come

  998. not simply to teach us

  999. moral laws

  1000. but to bring

  1001. our forgiveness

  1002. our reconciliation

  1003. to God.

  1004. Peace on earth.

  1005. that God had come

1006. to die on the cross

  1007. and then

  1008. because he is

1009. the very author of life

1010. he could not stay dead

  1011. but he came back

  1012. to life

  1013. and he lives today.

  1014. That's the context

  1015. of the Christmas story.

1016. There are some of us

  1017. perhaps many of us

  1018. in the room

  1019. that are living life

1020. like in Nehemiah chapter 13

    Nehemiah 13 chapter mention

  1021. where we are trying

  1022. so hard

  1023. to be good people

  1024. we're trying to

  1025. even be holy people

  1026. we promised ourselves

  1027. to do better

1028. some of you are making

  1029. New Year's resolutions

  1030. where you're promising

  1031. yourself to do better

  1032. this year

  1033. you'll finally

  1034. hit the gym

  1035. this year

  1036. you'll finally

  1037. stop this bad habit

  1038. whatever it may be

  1039. we're trying so hard

  1040. but you must

  1041. I must

  1042. we must

  1043. hear

  1044. the beauty

  1045. of the Christmas story

  1046. that God

  1047. himself is with us

  1048. every religion

  1049. every religion

  1050. whether it's Islam

  1051. with it's five pillars

  1052. Judaism with it's

  1053. 613 laws

  1054. is about

  1055. doing enough good

  1056. to climb our way

  1057. up into heaven

  1058. in Islam

  1059. you must follow

  1060. the five pillars

  1061. they're all good things

  1062. do these five pillars

1063. and if you do these things

1064. you can earn your way

  1065. up to heaven

1066. it's like every good thing

  1067. you do is like

  1068. a rung on a ladder

  1069. you're trying to climb

  1070. or Judaism

  1071. the 613 laws

  1072. you do these things

1073. and if you do them

  1074. well enough

  1075. it's like you're

  1076. climbing a ladder

  1077. or the eastern philosophies

  1078. they're not so much

  1079. about what you do

  1080. but learning to think

  1081. in an enlightened way

  1082. it's not so much

  1083. about your moral deeds

  1084. as much as your

  1085. your enlightened thoughts

  1086. your enlightened thinking

  1087. and if you can

  1088. if you can learn

  1089. to think right

  1090. it's like every right

  1091. way of enlightenment

  1092. is like another rung

  1093. on the ladder

1094. you can climb your way

  1095. up into nirvana

  1096. to heaven

  1097. in a sense

  1098. even in those of

  1099. us in the room

  1100. who might be

  1101. secular atheists

  1102. you're not

  1103. it's not heaven

  1104. you're climbing to

  1105. but success

  1106. and everything you do

  1107. all your achievements

  1108. and your degrees

  1109. and your philanthropy

1110. and all the good stuff

  1111. it's like you're trying

  1112. to climb your way

  1113. out of meaninglessness

  1114. into significance

1115. but if you and I

  1116. are honest

  1117. and the Bible

  1118. is very honest

  1119. our best efforts

  1120. all every step

  1121. on the ladder

  1122. it's like the

  1123. rungs and ladders

  1124. break before us

  1125. and we slip down

  1126. and we climb

  1127. and we try

1128. and it breaks before us

  1129. and the ladder

  1130. we cannot climb

  1131. that ladder

  1132. up to heaven

  1133. that our greatest

  1134. achievements

  1135. still leave us

  1136. feeling empty

  1137. and that our best

  1138. habits

  1139. and our best

  1140. success

  1141. it still crumbles

  1142. in our hands

  1143. our lives are like

  1144. the book of Nehemiah

1145. where we try so much

1146. and we do some things

  1147. that we still find

  1148. ourselves with

  1149. an emptiness inside

1150. and so many of us

  1151. in this room

  1152. are exhausted

  1153. from trying so hard

  1154. to climb to heaven

  1155. and this is where

1156. you and I need to hear

  1157. the Christmas story

  1158. the true story

  1159. of Jesus

  1160. that what separates

  1161. Christianity

  1162. from all other

  1163. religions and philosophies

1164. is that it's the only one

  1165. that says

1166. you don't climb to heaven

  1167. but that heaven

  1168. has climbed down

  1169. to us

  1170. that the gospel

  1171. that Jesus

  1172. turns the ladder

  1173. on its head

  1174. instead of us

  1175. climbing up

  1176. heaven climbs to us

  1177. that Jesus

  1178. the Christmas story

  1179. is about God

  1180. climbing down

  1181. into the brokenness

  1182. and decay

  1183. despair

  1184. and even death

  1185. of the human condition

  1186. that it's not about

  1187. what we try

  1188. to do

  1189. but it's what

  1190. he has done

  1191. and that's where

  1192. Christianity is not

  1193. about

1194. a new way of thinking

  1195. even if it changes

  1196. our way of thinking

  1197. and it's not about

  1198. a moral code

  1199. although there's

  1200. moral things in it

  1201. but at the heart

  1202. of Christianity

  1203. at the heart

  1204. of the Christmas story

  1205. is not a philosophy

  1206. but rather

  1207. an event

  1208. it's news

  1209. something has happened

  1210. and the thing about

  1211. news

  1212. an event

  1213. is that it's true

  1214. regardless of how much

  1215. you believe it

1216. or how you feel about it

  1217. the reality is that

  1218. Christianity isn't about

  1219. getting you to think

  1220. differently

  1221. but rather

  1222. the fact that

  1223. God himself

1224. has come into the earth

1225. in the story of Christmas

  1226. that it's true

1227. he's come into the earth

  1228. and that there's

  1229. eyewitness accounts

  1230. there's good historical evidence

  1231. that God himself

  1232. that Jesus

  1233. died on a cross

  1234. and came back

  1235. from the dead

  1236. and so all that's

1237. left for us to do

  1238. is nothing

  1239. but receive

  1240. his presence

  1241. nothing

  1242. but to receive

  1243. his forgiveness

1244. and so in a few minutes

  1245. we're going to have

  1246. communion

1247. where we're going to be

  1248. remembering Jesus'

  1249. death and resurrection

1250. and I want to invite you

  1251. to

1252. as you come up here

  1253. to take communion

  1254. to forsake that

  1255. effort

  1256. that trying to

  1257. do enough

  1258. to get God

  1259. to like you

  1260. and to receive

  1261. his love

  1262. to receive

  1263. his forgiveness

  1264. some of us

1265. you're not out of place yet

  1266. you're not a Christian

  1267. you're wrestling

  1268. with these things

1269. I want to invite you

1270. I want to challenge you

  1271. that there's a better way

  1272. than just trying

  1273. really hard

1274. to live a good life

  1275. that the only way

  1276. to live a life

  1277. that's so fully alive

  1278. the only way

  1279. to live a life

  1280. where you're

  1281. at peace

  1282. with others

  1283. and yourself

  1284. is to

  1285. have peace

  1286. with God

  1287. and the only way

  1288. to peace

  1289. with God

  1290. is to receive

  1291. his forgiveness

  1292. by asking him

  1293. for it

  1294. he's already

  1295. provided

  1296. forgiveness

  1297. we just need

  1298. to ask

  1299. and finally

  1300. it should

  1301. break our hearts

  1302. those of you

  1303. who have received

  1304. the forgiveness

  1305. of God

  1306. those of you

  1307. who are Christians

  1308. it should break

  1309. our hearts

  1310. that there are

  1311. so many people

  1312. who are living life

  1313. as if it's still

1314. the time of Nehemiah 13

  1315. who are living life

  1316. as if God hasn't

  1317. broken into the earth

  1318. who are exhausted

  1319. there's still so many

  1320. who are exhausted

  1321. by trying so hard

  1322. I want to especially

  1323. highlight the fact

  1324. that the majority

  1325. of Jewish people

  1326. around the globe today

  1327. are like

  1328. Nehemiah 13

  1329. and the years following

  1330. where they're still

  1331. waiting

  1332. waiting

  1333. with panic

  1334. and exhaustion

  1335. waiting

  1336. for God

  1337. to come back

  1338. to the earth

  1339. waiting for the presence

  1340. of God

  1341. to come back

  1342. they've missed

  1343. the fact

  1344. that he already has

  1345. that the Christmas story

  1346. is the climax

1347. of all that there is

  1348. about

  1349. for the Jewish

  1350. it's the climax

  1351. of creation

  1352. it's the climax

  1353. of what it means

  1354. to be Jewish

  1355. that God has come

1356. and so I want to

  1357. invite the

  1358. musicians

  1359. to come back

  1360. to the stage

  1361. and we're going

  1362. to sing a Christmas

  1363. song many of you

  1364. know well

  1365. O Come O Come

  1366. Emmanuel

  1367. and ransom

  1368. captive Israel

  1369. I want to invite

  1370. you to sing

  1371. this song

  1372. as a prayer

  1373. of intercession

  1374. both for Jewish

  1375. people who don't

  1376. know the promised

  1377. Messiah

  1378. as well as for

  1379. any of your friends

  1380. or family

  1381. who just don't

  1382. know that God

  1383. has come back

  1384. to earth

  1385. in the body

  1386. of Jesus

  1387. and so I want

  1388. to invite you

  1389. to stand

  1390. I'll say a prayer

  1391. and then we'll sing

  1392. God thank you

  1393. that you love us

  1394. way too much

  1395. to be content

  1396. to just watch us

  1397. from a distance

  1398. but that you have

  1399. broken into

  1400. human history

  1401. in real time

  1402. in real space

  1403. 2,000 years ago

  1404. that you came

  1405. to earth

  1406. as Jesus

  1407. that you did

  1408. what we couldn't do

  1409. living a perfect life

  1410. and that you

  1411. gave your life

  1412. for us

  1413. on the cross

  1414. and have come

  1415. back to life

  1416. and that today

  1417. we're not here

  1418. to simply remember

  1419. a great teacher

  1420. of the past

  1421. but to be

  1422. in your very

  1423. presence

  1424. and so

  1425. God I pray

  1426. that in your love

  1427. and tender mercy

  1428. that you would

  1429. lead us

  1430. in the fullness

  1431. of what Christmas

  1432. is all about

  1433. you bringing

  1434. us

  1435. peace with God

  1436. your very presence

  1437. may we treasure that

  1438. more than anything else

  1439. and may we live

  1440. in the rest

  1441. that that brings

  1442. in the name

  1443. of your son

  1444. Jesus we pray

  1445. amen

  1446. all love

  1447. so

  1448. to be

  1449. and

  1450. listen

  1451. to
