  1. Father, we thank you for your word.

  2. We thank you, Father, that you reveal yourself to us,

  3. you speak to us by your word,

  4. that every word in this book, the Bible,

  5. is the word that you ultimately wanted to have here,

  6. and that you are the ultimate author of Scripture,

  7. the one who ultimately speaks to us through your word.

  8. So we ask, Father, that the Holy Spirit

  9. would still and quieten our hearts

  10. so that we might receive from you this morning.

  11. We ask that you would speak deep

  12. into the very command centers of who we are.

  13. And all these things we ask in the name of Jesus,

  14. your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  15. Please be seated.

  16. So amongst other things this morning,

  17. I'm going to talk about the devil.

  18. And I'm going to talk about the devil

  19. not because I have a fixation about talking about the devil,

  20. but because what we do is we preach through books of the Bible,

  21. and the devil is mentioned twice in this text.

  22. And you might say that twice isn't very much out of 38 verses,

  23. but the two times are actually very significant,

  24. and I wouldn't be serving you if we didn't look at it,

  25. because it's important.

  26. And I mention all of this because it's very interesting.

  27. Those of you who've led Bible studies

  28. or maybe done some preaching before,

  29. you always have an interesting week.

  30. I mean, the speaker always has an interesting week

  31. when he's going to try to talk about the devil.

  32. I don't know what it is.

  33. It just seems as if there's more temptations that come my way,

  34. more things that just don't work out in my schedule,

  35. more reasons to be grumpy or angry or fill in the blank.

  36. And I've had that type of week.

  37. It's really as if the devil wants to knock you off your game.

  38. He wants to knock you off

  39. and either maybe try to dissuade you

  40. from talking about the devil at all

  41. or just, I don't know, just mess you up.

  42. So that's been my week

  43. because we're going to look at some things

  44. that the Bible has to say about the devil.

  45. And by the way, one of the things

  46. that we're going to learn in this

  47. is there's a very famous saying

  48. from one of the English reformers

  49. at the time of the English Reformation.

  50. And he said that the devil never misses church.

  51. And he's the one person who never misses the church.

  52. The minister might not always be there,

  53. but the devil is always there.

  54. And some of you as well

  55. might have had very, very odd weeks

  56. and even now having very odd experiences

  57. with your minds filled with all sorts of things.

  58. And if that's what's going on,

  59. it's just really good to remember

  60. that even though when we gather together

  61. in the presence of Jesus

  62. to open his word

  63. and to be together as Christ's people,

  64. that it's a spiritual war

  65. that we're involved in at the same time.

  66. It really is.

  67. And it's just important

  68. to be gripped by the gospel

  69. and to call out to the Father

  70. to help us.

  71. And when we come in,

  72. especially if we're wrestling

  73. with thoughts of despair

  74. or depression

  75. or worry

  76. or sexual thoughts

  77. or anger

  78. or whatever it is,

  79. to just try to remember

  80. that the devil wants to have you

  81. think about that the whole time.

  82. And it's a really good opportunity

  83. and invitation

  84. just to call out to Jesus for help.

  85. And he knows your frailty.

  86. He knows your frailty.

  87. And he loves you.

  88. So let's look at the text.

  89. It's John chapter 13.

    John 13 chapter mention

  90. We'll begin at verse 1.

  91. And what's happened

  92. in the way that John,

  93. who's one of the original apostles,

  94. the way he chose to write

  95. this biography of Jesus

  96. is basically from chapter 13, 14, 15, 16, 17.

  97. This is after Jesus' public ministry.

  98. This is now Jesus' private interactions

  99. just with his disciples.

  100. The public ministry has come to an end.

  101. It's a Thursday.

  102. Jesus, as he's saying all of these things,

  103. knows that he's going to be dead the next day.

  104. That's looming very present in his thought

  105. that this is going to be a very momentous 24 hours.

  106. And one of the interesting things as well,

  107. because Judas is mentioned

  108. with significance in this text,

  109. is that Judas will also be dead.

  110. Not at the same time as Jesus,

  111. but within 48 hours,

  112. Judas will be dead.

  113. But Jesus knows that he is going to be dying.

  114. And this is the private interactions of him

  115. with his disciples.

  116. And here's how it begins.

  117. John chapter 13, verse 1.

    John 13:1

  118. Now, before the feast of the Passover,

  119. when Jesus knew that his hour had come

  120. to depart out of this world to the Father,

  121. having loved his own who are in the world,

  122. he loved them to the end.

  123. Now, just sort of pause.

  124. And I know this could end up taking us

  125. like three hours to read through

  126. if I pause after every verse and talk for a bit.

  127. But this is a really important part to stop at.

  128. If you're not that familiar with the Bible,

  129. the Passover is a hugely significant event

  130. in the history of Israel.

  131. It's the event where God acts with great power

  132. to deliver the people of Israel

  133. out of slavery and bondage in Egypt.

  134. And it's what propels them ultimately

  135. towards the promised land.

  136. And it's during this,

  137. and it's a very, very important festival.

  138. It's during, just as this festival is beginning,

  139. that Jesus is doing this

  140. and he's going to die during the Passover.

  141. It's part of the whole overarching symbolism.

  142. But the important thing I want to draw out to you

  143. is this, it sounds, and this is just,

  144. you don't know this in English,

  145. but it's there in the original language.

  146. Look at the very last words of verse 1.

  147. He loved them to the end.

  148. Now that word end is a very interesting word.

  149. Those of you who are a bit familiar with Greek,

  150. it's, I don't know if I'm pronouncing it correctly,

  151. telos, telos.

  152. It's the idea of,

  153. it's not just that something's finished.

  154. Okay, well, the movie's over,

  155. let's do something else.

  156. Or okay, my lunch is over,

  157. it's something else.

  158. It's a word that talks about

  159. everything moving towards a purpose,

  160. towards an end,

  161. towards something that makes,

  162. gives meaning to everything.

  163. And that's the word that he's using.

  164. But that's not the word that,

  165. I mean, that's a very significant word.

  166. But if you turn in your Bibles,

  167. it's not going to be on the screen.

  168. If you turn in your Bibles

  169. to John chapter 19, verse 30.

    John 19:30

  170. John chapter 19, verse 30.

    John 19:30

  171. And if you have a Bible like mine

  172. that gives you little headings,

  173. you'll see that it,

  174. just before verse 30,

  175. it talks about the death of Jesus.

  176. And what's happening the next day

  177. is that Jesus is dying on the cross.

  178. And whether this is the very last word

  179. that Jesus says

  180. or the second last word,

  181. I mean, that's because

  182. it's in different biographies.

  183. This is the very, very important ending

  184. in John's gospel.

  185. And you'll see there,

  186. it says in verse 30,

  187. when Jesus had received the sour wine,

  188. he said, it is finished.

  189. And he bowed his head

  190. and gave up his spirit.

  191. And he dies.

  192. And that word that says,

  193. it is finished,

  194. is basically the same word

  195. as the end,

  196. only in a different verb tense.

  197. So what John is doing,

  198. so when Jesus says

  199. it's finished,

  200. it's saying it's accomplished,

  201. he's saying the telos,

  202. the whole purpose,

  203. the whole reason

  204. of everything that I've gone through

  205. in all of my life,

  206. my conception in the womb

  207. of Mary by God,

  208. my time in the womb,

  209. my birth,

  210. my life,

  211. everything that's gone through,

  212. it's all moved to this purpose,

  213. and I have accomplished

  214. everything that it was

  215. on my heart and mind

  216. and on the heart and mind

  217. of God the Father to do,

  218. it has all come to its proper end

  219. as I hang here on the cross

  220. with blood coming out of my wrists

  221. and out of my feet

  222. and down my head

  223. and my back is all scarred.

  224. And as he dies,

  225. he has accomplished everything

  226. that he means to accomplish.

  227. But if you go back

  228. to John chapter 13 verse 1,

    John 13:1

  229. when Jesus says

  230. he loved them to the end,

  231. it's the same word,

  232. it's the same idea.

  233. In other words,

  234. what Jesus,

  235. what John is doing here,

  236. and we're going to look at it

  237. obviously a bit more,

  238. is he's linking

  239. what's now going to happen

  240. with what's going to happen

  241. at the end.

  242. A way for you to think about it

  243. is this,

  244. that what's going to be,

  245. you just sort of think about it

  246. from the perspective of the disciples,

  247. okay,

  248. and of the high priests

  249. and of Pilate

  250. and the Roman soldiers

  251. and the crowds

  252. and Barabbas

  253. and what's going to be happening

  254. over,

  255. and there's going to be

  256. some teaching and everything.

  257. You're going to see in a moment

  258. that Jesus is going to be aware

  259. of the devil being present

  260. and he's going to be aware

  261. of Judas' betrayal

  262. and Judas is going to go out

  263. into the night

  264. and the soldiers are going to come

  265. and Jesus is going to be captured

  266. and he's going to be

  267. falsely accused

  268. and his disciples

  269. are going to scatter

  270. and he's going to be whipped

  271. and he's going to be mocked

  272. and he's going to die on the cross

  273. and it looks like

  274. he's completely underfailed

  275. and on the ground,

  276. you know,

  277. it looks like Pilate

  278. is doing this

  279. because he's won

  280. and the Jewish leaders

  281. are doing this

  282. and like this

  283. because they've won

  284. and Barabbas

  285. is maybe just

  286. having the biggest laugh

  287. of his life

  288. and getting drunk

  289. after he's freed

  290. and it's just going to be bloody

  291. and it's going to be chaotic

  292. and it's going to look like

  293. it's a complete and utter failure

  294. and everything is just sort of going

  295. all this craziness

  296. and what Jesus is going to do

  297. in the very next story

  298. is Jesus is telling his disciples,

  299. I am about to go,

  300. in a sense,

  301. give you

  302. from 10,000 feet up in the air,

  303. so to speak,

  304. I'm going to basically describe

  305. in a simple act

  306. and teaching

  307. what's really going on.

  308. I'm going to help you

  309. to understand.

  310. You're going to get caught up

  311. in the betrayal

  312. and the scattering

  313. and the fighting

  314. and the soldiers

  315. and the mocking

  316. and the blood.

  317. You're going to get caught up

  318. in all of these little details

  319. down in the ground

  320. but I am going to tell you a story

  321. and I'm going to enact something

  322. out in front of you

  323. so that if you listen

  324. and afterwards you'll understand,

  325. it's like you're going to be

  326. 10,000 feet above the ground

  327. and you're going to be with God

  328. and God is giving you

  329. a very, very,

  330. I am God,

  331. Jesus giving his disciples

  332. a very, very simple image

  333. to understand

  334. what is really going on.

  335. In Matthew, Mark, and Luke,

  336. Jesus does the same thing

  337. but he does it

  338. by the Lord's Supper,

  339. the institution

  340. of the Lord's Supper.

  341. He gives them a way

  342. to understand

  343. from 10,000 feet

  344. from God's perspective

  345. what's really going on

  346. on the ground,

  347. what's really happening

  348. not just in history

  349. but for all eternity

  350. because it's happening

  351. in two levels both.

  352. It's happening

  353. at a spiritual level

  354. in terms of all eternity.

  355. It's happening in history

  356. in real time

  357. and John chooses

  358. a different story

  359. to help us to understand.

  360. Out of the two significant things

  361. or more that he did,

  362. Jesus did on that night,

  363. John says,

  364. you know what?

  365. I think the other guys

  366. are going to talk about this.

  367. I'm going to say this

  368. because this is also

  369. really important to understand.

  370. So what is it?

  371. Well, we have to get through

  372. something else first.

  373. Look at verse 2.

  374. So during supper,

  375. when the devil

  376. had already put it

  377. into the heart

  378. of Judas Iscariot,

  379. Simon's son,

  380. to betray him.

  381. Now just sort of pause.

  382. What this is saying

  383. is that,

  384. you know,

  385. this larger story,

  386. this story,

  387. this image

  388. that Jesus is going to give

  389. to help his disciples

  390. understand

  391. what's really going on,

  392. it's going to happen.

  393. It takes into account

  394. the reality of the devil.

  395. And it's going to take into account

  396. the reality of how the devil works

  397. with feeble and frail human beings

  398. like you and me.

  399. And what he,

  400. Jesus is aware of,

  401. John is now aware

  402. of it afterwards,

  403. but Jesus is aware

  404. of it at the time,

  405. as we'll see,

  406. is that the devil

  407. has been putting thoughts

  408. into Judas' mind.

  409. In fact,

  410. another translation

  411. for put is cast.

  412. It's almost like,

  413. you know,

  414. like you're fishing.

  415. You cast,

  416. you cast the hook

  417. with the worm

  418. and you hope

  419. a fish will bite.

  420. It's almost the same

  421. type of way to understand.

  422. It's as if the devil's

  423. fishing your mind

  424. and your heart

  425. and your will,

  426. throwing out those hooks

  427. with the worm,

  428. seeing if George will bite,

  429. because that's what he's doing.

  430. And,

  431. you know,

  432. you and I can't stop

  433. the devil

  434. from putting thoughts

  435. into our mind

  436. and into our heart.

  437. But what we do with it

  438. is on us.

  439. And that's one of the things

  440. that goes on in our lives.

  441. You know,

  442. it's amazing how often

  443. in my own life

  444. and in others,

  445. I see people snatch

  446. unhappiness

  447. out of the jaws

  448. of happiness.

  449. Like,

  450. they could be happy.

  451. Things are going well.

  452. And then all of a sudden,

  453. there's a thought

  454. in our head

  455. to remind us

  456. of that mean thing

  457. that somebody did

  458. to us before.

  459. Or the mean thing

  460. our mom said to us.

  461. Or the coach said to us

  462. 30 years ago

  463. and all of a sudden,

  464. on the way to happiness,

  465. whoa,

  466. our mind is preoccupied

  467. with that.

  468. Or our mind is,

  469. all of a sudden,

  470. we're on the way

  471. to happiness

  472. and then we look

  473. at somebody

  474. and they,

  475. I just discovered

  476. how expensive

  477. purses are

  478. because I bought

  479. my wife a purse

  480. at Christmas.

  481. I did not realize

  482. how much money

  483. some people spend

  484. on purses.

  485. It was a shock

  486. to me.

  487. Anyway,

  488. and listen,

  489. if you're a woman

  490. trying to impress me

  491. with your purse,

  492. it is lost on me.

  493. I did not realize

  494. that one person

  495. might have a $25 purse

  496. and a $3,000 purse,

  497. right?

  498. They both just look

  499. black to me.

  500. But those of you

  501. who are into those things,

  502. you know and you understand.

  503. Okay?

  504. So, but anyway,

  505. so, you know,

  506. but you're on your way

  507. and all of a sudden

  508. you see this $2,000 purse

  509. and now you're filled

  510. with envy

  511. and then you go

  512. from envy

  513. to feeling lousy

  514. about yourself

  515. and your prospects

  516. and then you go

  517. from envy

  518. to going,

  519. well, I'm better than you

  520. and before you know it,

  521. happiness is gone.

  522. The devil has cast

  523. a little thought

  524. into your mind

  525. and you grab on it

  526. and that's what,

  527. that's what's describing here.

  528. It's a very important

  529. spiritual teaching,

  530. actually,

  531. just sort of thrown

  532. right in here

  533. in terms of how

  534. the devil works.

  535. But we have to still see

  536. whether Judas

  537. is going to bite on it.

  538. I mean, we know,

  539. many of us know the story

  540. but that's what's going

  541. to happen here

  542. in the story

  543. is that not only

  544. we discover that Judas

  545. has been biting

  546. on these thoughts

  547. that come into

  548. the devil's mind,

  549. the devil has him hooked

  550. at some point in time.

  551. So, verse 3,

  552. so remember we said,

  553. so this is going

  554. to be something

  555. that Jesus does

  556. to help all of his disciples

  557. understand what's

  558. really going on

  559. and it's a very,

  560. very, very important image

  561. for some of us.

  562. I'm going to tell you

  563. right now,

  564. not all of us

  565. struggle with shame

  566. but some of us,

  567. shame is a very,

  568. very powerful part

  569. of who we are

  570. and the following image

  571. is a very powerful image

  572. for those of us

  573. who deal with shame.

  574. So, verse 3,

  575. Jesus knowing

  576. that the Father

  577. had given all things

  578. into his hands

  579. and that he,

  580. that is Jesus,

  581. he'd come from God

  582. and he was going

  583. to go back to God

  584. and he rose from supper,

  585. he laid aside

  586. his outer garments

  587. and taking a towel,

  588. tied it around his waist,

  589. then he poured water

  590. into a basin

  591. and began to wash

  592. the disciples' feet

  593. and to wipe them

  594. with the towel

  595. that was wrapped around him.

  596. And we'll just sort of pause.

  597. So what Jesus does here,

  598. it's a bit of a gross image

  599. to us,

  600. but he strips down

  601. to his loincloth

  602. and a loincloth

  603. would have covered

  604. his genitals,

  605. but not all of his buttock.

  606. And he strips down to that.

  607. And he strips down to that

  608. complete,

  609. and takes,

  610. in other words,

  611. the complete humiliating place

  612. of the lowest servant.

  613. And he washes

  614. his disciples' feet.

  615. And that is going to be,

  616. that with his explanation

  617. that comes,

  618. that is the image

  619. that Jesus wants us

  620. to have in our minds

  621. to help us

  622. to understand

  623. the betrayal

  624. and the running

  625. and the scaredness

  626. and the beatings

  627. and the blood

  628. and the nails

  629. and the whipping

  630. and the mocking

  631. and the death.

  632. And Jesus

  633. wants this

  634. to be a story

  635. and an image

  636. to help us

  637. to understand

  638. what's really going on.

  639. Amidst all the events,

  640. that's what we are

  641. to understand

  642. is happening.

  643. That God,

  644. the Son of God,

  645. is setting aside

  646. his glory and splendor

  647. and divine prerogatives.

  648. He's setting all of these aside.

  649. He's taking the position

  650. and the demeanor

  651. of the lowest

  652. of servants and slaves

  653. to clean,

  654. to make you clean.

  655. To make you clean.

  656. That's what's really going on.

  657. We'll unpack that

  658. a little bit more

  659. in a moment.

  660. But it's a very,

  661. very powerful image.

  662. And Peter doesn't like it at all.

  663. You know,

  664. Peter doesn't like it at all.

  665. Look at verse 6.

  666. He came to Simon Peter

  667. who said to him,

  668. Lord,

  669. do you wash my feet?

  670. And Jesus answered him,

  671. what I am doing

  672. you do not understand now.

  673. Boy,

  674. is that ever

  675. an understatement.

  676. They don't understand

  677. it at all.

  678. But afterward,

  679. you will understand.

  680. Because you see,

  681. Jesus wants us

  682. to understand.

  683. And Peter said to him,

  684. you shall never

  685. wash my feet.

  686. And in the original language,

  687. this is emphatic.

  688. You shall never

  689. wash my feet.

  690. It's emphatic

  691. in the original language.

  692. In the way

  693. it's structured.

  694. And,

  695. and Jesus

  696. answered him,

  697. if I do not

  698. wash you.

  699. Now here he's going

  700. beyond just the foot thing

  701. and he's saying,

  702. if I do not wash you,

  703. if I do not make you clean,

  704. so to speak,

  705. you have no share

  706. with me.

  707. No participation

  708. with me.

  709. No,

  710. you're not,

  711. in a sense,

  712. connected to me.

  713. And in light of that,

  714. verse 9,

  715. Simon Peter,

  716. because if there's one thing

  717. Simon Peter wants,

  718. he has lots of things

  719. about him

  720. that are weak and frail,

  721. but he wants Jesus.

  722. So he says,

  723. Lord,

  724. not my feet only then,

  725. so to speak,

  726. but also my hands,

  727. my head,

  728. like it's an image

  729. of what I do,

  730. how I think,

  731. like all of me.

  732. And then Jesus answers

  733. in sort of a bit

  734. of an elliptical way

  735. and he's speaking,

  736. of course,

  737. in that culture

  738. where you're walking

  739. on dirt floors

  740. all the time

  741. and you're walking

  742. on dirt

  743. and dust

  744. and Jesus said to him

  745. in verse 9,

  746. the one who was bathed,

  747. you know,

  748. had a bath,

  749. does not need to wash

  750. except for his feet.

  751. In other words,

  752. after they get out

  753. of their bath,

  754. the rest of them,

  755. they're clean

  756. from here up,

  757. right?

  758. But it's completely clean

  759. and you are clean

  760. because Jesus knows

  761. what's going to happen

  762. with them

  763. and what's going on

  764. in their lives

  765. and then he says,

  766. but not every one of you

  767. for he knew

  768. who was to betray him.

  769. That was why he said

  770. not all of you are clean.

  771. See,

  772. one of the things

  773. which is so powerful

  774. about this image,

  775. this is an image

  776. to help us

  777. to understand

  778. what's really going on

  779. at the crucifixion

  780. is that Jesus

  781. also washed

  782. Judas' feet.

  783. In a sense,

  784. with the devil

  785. looking on,

  786. while the devil

  787. is casting hooks

  788. with worms

  789. into Judas' head,

  790. seeing if he'll bite,

  791. jiggling it,

  792. while that's all going on,

  793. Jesus washes

  794. Judas' feet

  795. as well as the disciples.

  796. It's an act

  797. of profound love

  798. and an act of love

  799. that respects our freedom.

  800. Now,

  801. I,

  802. you know,

  803. sometimes in my sermons

  804. I talk about shame

  805. and stuff like that

  806. and that's because

  807. I struggled with shame

  808. for decades,

  809. not just a week,

  810. a day,

  811. but for decades.

  812. Even as a Christian

  813. I struggled with shame

  814. and it was one of those things,

  815. I don't know how it was,

  816. it's probably just in heaven

  817. I'll find out,

  818. God will just say,

  819. George,

  820. you are so dense,

  821. like you listen to 15 sermons,

  822. 150 sermons

  823. would have helped,

  824. he never listened,

  825. never heard,

  826. I don't know what he's going to say,

  827. but I just didn't ever,

  828. it seemed like it took decades

  829. for me to start to have a sense

  830. about the resources

  831. to try to handle,

  832. I'd fight against it,

  833. but for those of you

  834. who struggle with shame,

  835. you know,

  836. it's that there's something

  837. wrong with you.

  838. It's not just that

  839. people who don't struggle

  840. with shame,

  841. they do wrong things,

  842. but then they move on.

  843. But for those of us

  844. who struggle with shame,

  845. it's something at the very center

  846. of our identity,

  847. that there's just something

  848. fundamentally broken about me.

  849. And I don't mean here

  850. in a scriptural sense,

  851. I used to think that,

  852. that somehow I'm just

  853. experiencing Genesis 3

  854. and on one level

  855. I am experiencing Genesis 3,

  856. but on another level

  857. there's a different thing

  858. going on within me,

  859. a different type of,

  860. an identity that I have,

  861. even though I acknowledge

  862. the gospel with my head,

  863. but an identity that's

  864. somehow not touched

  865. by what Jesus has done

  866. for me on the cross,

  867. that even though,

  868. yeah, yeah,

  869. I'm going to go to heaven,

  870. but in the meantime,

  871. things just aren't going

  872. to work out with me.

  873. There's something wrong

  874. about me.

  875. There's something

  876. that is just

  877. dirty.

  878. It's just dirty.

  879. And some of us

  880. in the room

  881. have no idea

  882. what I'm talking about,

  883. and some of you

  884. know very well

  885. what I'm talking about.

  886. And one of the wonderful

  887. things about Jesus

  888. and one of the wonderful

  889. things about God

  890. is that God knows,

  891. Jesus knows,

  892. that you and I

  893. are all different.

  894. And that's why

  895. there's different ways

  896. that Jesus communicates

  897. this profound wonder

  898. about what he accomplishes

  899. for us on the cross.

  900. And for some of us,

  901. we struggle with guilt.

  902. And so there's all these images

  903. about how Jesus

  904. bears our guilt.

  905. And for some of us,

  906. we struggle with

  907. the fear of death.

  908. And so there's all

  909. these wonderful images

  910. about how Jesus

  911. brings life.

  912. And for some of us,

  913. we struggle with darkness.

  914. And there's all these

  915. wonderful images

  916. about how Jesus

  917. brings light.

  918. And for some of us,

  919. we struggle with

  920. a sense that there

  921. is something

  922. foul about us.

  923. There is something

  924. broken.

  925. There is something

  926. unclean and dirty

  927. about us.

  928. And so it is

  929. that the Bible,

  930. Jesus presents us this image

  931. that what Jesus is doing for us on the cross,

  932. what he's going through

  933. is sopping up all that

  934. which makes us unclean and foul

  935. to make us clean.

  936. That when you put your faith and trust in Jesus,

  937. he makes you clean.

  938. He makes you clean.

  939. And that is the image that he is communicating here.

  940. If you think about it, isn't that so wonderful

  941. that Jesus would provide such an image to Judas

  942. who is eating the worms

  943. that the devil is casting into his mind and heart?

  944. I will make you clean.

  945. You know, one of the things I read

  946. and thought about different secular things,

  947. and there's some help you can get from secular sources

  948. about dealing with shame.

  949. There's some help you can get in trying to understand

  950. what it is and all of that.

  951. But you know, at the end of the day,

  952. the secular things to try to help you deal with shame,

  953. and they can help you to understand

  954. maybe a little bit about where it came from

  955. and the shape it takes

  956. and the different ways it forces you to act

  957. or leads you or encourages you to act.

  958. But at the end of the day,

  959. all it can really do

  960. is try to make me proud.

  961. Because at the end of the day,

  962. what it really tries to do

  963. is either shift it,

  964. don't feel ashamed,

  965. because it's really all your mom's fault,

  966. or it's really all your dad's fault,

  967. or your coach's fault,

  968. or your brother's fault,

  969. or your boss's fault.

  970. But you know what?

  971. You know, in a very fallen way,

  972. that can give you a certain type of pleasure

  973. to know that it's somebody else's fault,

  974. but it actually doesn't really deal with the shame.

  975. And the other thing that secular things often do

  976. is just try to say,

  977. look in the mirror and say,

  978. you're beautiful,

  979. you're powerful,

  980. you can do it,

  981. you're a success,

  982. you're wonderful.

  983. Well, first of all,

  984. isn't that sort of like,

  985. yeah, really?

  986. But at the end of the day,

  987. it just makes you feel more proud,

  988. doesn't it?

  989. Like even if it works,

  990. it turns you into a narcissist.

  991. It turns you into a one who thinks,

  992. I'm the guy,

  993. I'm the gal,

  994. look at me,

  995. I deserve applause.

  996. And get angry when there's no applause.

  997. But you see,

  998. the wonderful thing here about the gospel is

  999. that this story,

  1000. on one hand,

1001. it helps us to understand

1002. those of us who struggle with shame.

1003. You know what the Bible is saying?

  1004. Actually, George,

1005. you know you think you're clean

1006. and there's something foul about you.

1007. You don't know half of it.

1008. You're way more foul than you ever believed.

1009. Why is it saying that?

1010. Because my need for cleaning

  1011. must be unbelievably great

1012. if Jesus had to go to such lengths

  1013. to make me clean.

  1014. Leaving heaven.

  1015. Suffering trial and temptation.

  1016. Dying on the cross.

  1017. On one hand,

1018. the insight of a person struggling with shame

  1019. doesn't even begin

1020. to get to the tip of the iceberg.

1021. But at the same time,

  1022. Jesus,

  1023. knowing our need,

  1024. descends

  1025. into the absolute depths

1026. to make you and me clean.

1027. And if this was just a story,

  1028. then it's just maybe a variation

1029. of what secular things do,

1030. of either trying to shift the blame

1031. or give you a type of self-talk

1032. that gives you the power

1033. to just sort of steamroller

  1034. over your emotions.

1035. And this is maybe doing a different thing

1036. by giving you an image

  1037. to think about

  1038. that might be helpful.

1039. But it's not just an image

  1040. because you see

1041. at the very, very center

  1042. of this biography

  1043. is that it's true.

  1044. It's a way that Jesus

1045. is giving you and me

  1046. to understand

1047. what really happened in history.

  1048. And in a sense,

1049. what not just happened in history

  1050. but happened in eternity.

1051. That God, the Son of God,

1052. really did enter our human race.

1053. That God, the Son of God,

1054. really did live amongst us

1055. suffering the trials and temptations

1056. that we suffer only without sin.

1057. That God, the Son of God,

  1058. knows from the inside

1059. what it really is like

  1060. to be tempted

1061. and to be feeble and frail

  1062. and to be troubled.

1063. And that God, the Son of God,

  1064. really does get betrayed.

1065. He really does die upon the cross.

  1066. He really does taste

1067. all there is to taste of death.

1068. And on the third day,

1069. He really does rise from the dead.

1070. The tomb really is empty.

1071. The body was not stolen.

  1072. Jesus actually does deal

  1073. with the foulness

  1074. and the dirt

  1075. and the shame

  1076. and the sin.

1077. And He really does deal with it

1078. and emerge on the far side alive.

1079. He really does deal with it.

1080. And He really does offer

1081. to make you and me clean

1082. if we put our hand out

1083. and He crosses that infinite distance

  1084. towards us.

1085. And for those of us

  1086. who struggle with shame,

1087. we might not even be able

1088. to put our hand out like that.

1089. It might just be like this.

1090. We're out of our hand

1091. and we do like this.

1092. And He takes the least

1093. and He crosses that infinite distance

1094. and comes and takes you and me.

1095. And He really does make me clean.

1096. This is not just a story

  1097. for self-talk.

1098. It is a story to understand

1099. what God, the Son of God,

1100. and the power of the Holy Spirit

1101. by the pleasure of the Father,

1102. God, the Trinity from all eternity,

1103. who is love out of love,

1104. did for you and me

1105. to make you and me clean

1106. when we put our faith

  1107. and trust in Him.

1108. And our identity is clean.

  1109. Our identity,

  1110. my identity in Christ,

  1111. is clean.

  1112. Not because of self-talk

  1113. or powerful emotions

1114. or drugs that change my emotions,

1115. but because it's true He did it.

  1116. My identity in Him

  1117. is clean.

1118. Jesus helps us to understand more.

1119. We'll finish reading the text

1120. and then I'll just sort of close

  1121. because there's still

  1122. some other important things

1123. that come out in the whole

1124. back and forward of the story.

  1125. Look at verse 12.

  1126. When Jesus had finished,

  1127. had washed their feet

1128. and put on His outer garments

  1129. and resumed His place,

  1130. Jesus said to them,

  1131. Do you understand

1132. what I have done to you?

1133. You call me teacher and Lord

  1134. and you are right,

  1135. for so I am.

  1136. Some translations say

  1137. master and Lord.

  1138. If I then,

  1139. your Lord and teacher,

  1140. your Lord and master,

  1141. have washed your feet,

1142. you also ought to wash

  1143. one another's feet.

1144. For I have given you

1145. an example that you also

1146. should do just as I have

  1147. done to you.

  1148. Truly, truly,

  1149. I say to you,

1150. a servant is not greater

  1151. than his master

  1152. nor is a messenger

  1153. greater than the one

  1154. who sent him.

1155. If you know these things,

  1156. blessed are you

  1157. if you do them.

  1158. I am not speaking

  1159. to all of you,

  1160. of all of you.

  1161. I know whom I have chosen.

  1162. But the scripture

  1163. will be fulfilled.

  1164. It's very important.

  1165. He tells them

1166. the Bible will be fulfilled.

  1167. See,

  1168. just as a,

1169. before I tell you about this,

1170. this is what I'm telling you

  1171. right now.

  1172. All I'm doing,

  1173. I am just a messenger

  1174. on behalf of Jesus.

1175. I am not an optimist.

  1176. I am a pessimist

  1177. in recovery.

1178. And all I can do

  1179. is when Jesus says

1180. the scripture will be fulfilled,

  1181. he's going to share

  1182. a dark fulfillment,

  1183. so to speak.

  1184. That's what I'm telling you

  1185. right now by,

  1186. you are clean

1187. if you put your faith

  1188. and trust in him.

1189. The scripture will be fulfilled.

1190. God's word will be fulfilled.

  1191. His word is sure.

  1192. You can trust it

1193. if you put your hand

  1194. out to him.

1195. But then back to the text,

1196. he who ate my bread

1197. has lifted his heel against me.

  1198. Then verse 19,

1199. I am telling you this now

  1200. before it takes place,

1201. that when it does take place,

  1202. you may believe

  1203. that I am he.

  1204. Truly, truly,

  1205. I say to you,

  1206. whoever receives

  1207. the one I send

  1208. receives me.

  1209. Isn't that what I said?

  1210. I'm not,

1211. you don't have to receive me,

  1212. it's the message.

1213. And if you receive Jesus,

  1214. you receive him.

  1215. And whoever receives me

  1216. receives the one

  1217. who sent me.

  1218. After saying these things,

  1219. Jesus was troubled

  1220. in his spirit

  1221. and testified,

  1222. truly, truly,

  1223. I say to you,

1224. one of you will betray me.

  1225. One of the things

  1226. which is so wonderful

  1227. about that,

  1228. those of you

1229. who were here early enough

  1230. for the beginning

  1231. of morning prayer,

  1232. there's a wonderful line

  1233. in the beginning

  1234. of morning prayer.

1235. It's also at the beginning

  1236. of evening prayer

1237. and it's three different times

1238. in the book of Ezekiel.

1239. It's said in the same,

  1240. slightly different ways,

1241. but it's the same message.

  1242. God takes no delight

1243. in the death of a sinner,

1244. but rather that they will

  1245. turn from their wickedness

  1246. and live.

1247. And we see that here

  1248. in Jesus.

  1249. He's taking no delight

1250. in the fact that the Scripture

1251. is going to be fulfilled.

  1252. He's taking no delight

1253. in the fact that Judas

  1254. is going to refuse

  1255. all of these options

  1256. to repent.

  1257. It troubles him.

  1258. He takes no delight

1259. in the death of a sinner.

  1260. What delights him

  1261. is when you turn

  1262. from your wickedness

  1263. and live.

  1264. That's what delights Jesus.

  1265. That's what delights God.

1266. That is who God is.

1267. God is not a distant God

  1268. who occasionally gets mad

  1269. and wreaks destruction

  1270. on earth.

  1271. He's not just a force.

1272. He's not just sort of like

  1273. a basic woo-woo-woo

  1274. spiritual type of thing

  1275. out there

  1276. that we go to

  1277. when we die.

1278. This is how we know

  1279. who God really is

  1280. by Jesus.

  1281. Verse 22,

  1282. the disciples looked

  1283. at one another

  1284. uncertain of whom

  1285. Jesus spoke.

  1286. They had no idea

  1287. that somebody was going

1288. to betray him that night.

  1289. They had no idea

1290. who it was going to be.

  1291. Verse 23,

  1292. one of his disciples

  1293. whom Jesus loved,

  1294. that's John the writer,

  1295. he was reclining

1296. at table right beside Jesus,

1297. one of the places of honor.

  1298. So Simon Peter,

1299. not in a place of honor,

  1300. motioned to him

  1301. to ask Jesus

1302. of whom he was speaking.

  1303. So that disciple

  1304. leaning back against Jesus

  1305. said to him,

  1306. Lord, who is it?

  1307. Jesus answered,

1308. it is he to whom

1309. I will give this morsel

  1310. of bread

1311. when I have dipped it.

1312. He would have dipped it

  1313. into hummus

  1314. or tabbouleh

  1315. or something like that.

  1316. So when he had

  1317. dipped the morsel,

1318. he gave it to Judas,

1319. the son of Simon Iscariot.

  1320. Then after he had

  1321. taken the morsel,

  1322. Satan entered into him,

  1323. that is Judas.

1324. And Jesus said to him,

1325. what you are going to do,

  1326. do quickly.

  1327. You see,

  1328. the wonderful thing,

  1329. it's not that somehow

1330. the devil was in the bread.

  1331. That's not what it's saying.

  1332. You see,

  1333. Jesus has already

  1334. warned everybody

1335. that one of them there

1336. is going to betray him.

  1337. This is Jesus'

  1338. constant speaking

1339. to give Judas an honor.

  1340. You see,

  1341. God's desire

1342. is always that we repent.

  1343. That's his fundamental

  1344. desire for us.

  1345. He warns Judas repeatedly

1346. so that Judas will repent,

  1347. will turn.

1348. And now in this moment

  1349. of real intimacy,

1350. because that's what it is,

1351. if my wife was to come in

  1352. to a room

  1353. and I was feeding

  1354. another woman

  1355. by my hand,

1356. what would her reaction be?

  1357. It would be biblical.

  1358. No.

  1359. We all recognize

  1360. that that's a very

  1361. intimate gesture.

  1362. And that's,

  1363. Jesus gives a very

  1364. intimate gesture

  1365. to Judas.

1366. And it is that moment

  1367. of intimacy.

  1368. It's dark outside.

  1369. In Jerusalem

1370. at that time of the year,

  1371. it's about 10 degrees.

  1372. So it's,

  1373. and that would feel

  1374. very cold to people

1375. who are used to 40

  1376. in the summer.

1377. It would feel pretty warm

  1378. to us today,

1379. but it would feel cold to them.

  1380. It's dark outside.

  1381. It's cold.

  1382. They're all huddled around

  1383. to feast.

  1384. Jesus and his disciples,

  1385. the friends,

  1386. it's a moment of intimacy

1387. and it is the moment

  1388. of intimacy

  1389. that Judas decides

  1390. to have the devil

  1391. go all in

  1392. and possess him.

  1393. And the devil

  1394. and Jesus

  1395. are opposites,

  1396. but they're not equal.

  1397. The devil

  1398. doesn't boss Jesus around.

  1399. Jesus tells the devil

  1400. what to do.

  1401. Get it over with.

  1402. Be out.

  1403. Be gone.

1404. And the rest of Jesus'

  1405. teaching now

1406. is with the devil gone,

  1407. the betrayer gone.

  1408. It's just Jesus

  1409. and his disciples

1410. just to wrap it up.

  1411. Verse 31.

1412. When Judas had gone out,

  1413. Jesus said,

1414. now is the Son of Man glorified.

1415. He knows the cross is coming

1416. and God is glorified in him.

1417. If God is glorified in him,

1418. God will also glorify him

  1419. in himself

1420. and glorify him at once.

  1421. Little children,

  1422. yet a little while

  1423. I am with you.

  1424. You will seek me

1425. and just as I have said

  1426. to the Jewish leaders,

1427. so now I also say to you,

  1428. where I am going,

  1429. you cannot come.

  1430. A new commandment

  1431. I give to you,

1432. that you love one another

1433. just as I have loved you.

1434. You also are to love

  1435. one another.

  1436. By this,

  1437. all people will know

1438. that you are my disciples,

  1439. not by your

  1440. brilliant apologetics,

1441. not by your brilliant preaching,

1442. not by your spectacular music,

  1443. not by your unbelievably

  1444. wonderful organizational church,

1445. but if you have love

  1446. for one another.

1447. Simon Peter said to him,

1448. Lord, where are you going?

  1449. And Jesus answered him,

  1450. where I am going,

1451. you cannot follow me now,

1452. but you will follow afterward.

  1453. Peter will die.

  1454. Peter said to him,

1455. Lord, why can I not

  1456. follow you now?

  1457. I will lay down

  1458. my life for you.

  1459. And Jesus answered,

  1460. will you lay down

  1461. your life for me?

  1462. Truly, truly,

  1463. I say to you,

1464. the rooster will not crow

1465. until you have denied me

  1466. three times.

  1467. Amen.

1468. So just wrap it up

1469. with a couple of points

1470. to summarize where we've been.

1471. If you could put them up,

  1472. that would be great.

  1473. The first one is,

1474. the true Lord of all creation

  1475. loves you,

1476. and he stooped like a servant

  1477. to wash you

1478. and make you clean forever.

1479. The true Lord of all creation

  1480. loves you,

1481. and he stooped like a servant

  1482. to wash you

1483. and make you clean forever.

1484. That's the power of the image.

1485. That's what Jesus is saying.

  1486. That what's going on

  1487. in the cross

  1488. is me,

1489. the Lord of all creation.

  1490. I am stooping

  1491. and stooping

  1492. and stooping

  1493. and stooping,

  1494. even stooping

1495. to the point of death,

  1496. even stooping

  1497. to the point

1498. of bearing all the sin

  1499. and the shame

  1500. of the entire world

  1501. in my being.

  1502. I am stooping

  1503. lower and lower

  1504. and lower

  1505. because I love you.

  1506. And by my action

  1507. for you,

  1508. if you receive it,

  1509. I will wash you

1510. and make you clean forever.

  1511. Forever.

  1512. That means,

1513. I stand before you right now,

  1514. not because of arrogance

  1515. or pride

  1516. or narcissism,

  1517. but because I believe

  1518. the words of Jesus,

1519. I stand before you clean.

  1520. clean.

  1521. That's how I stand before you,

  1522. in Jesus,

  1523. clean.

1524. If you could put up

  1525. the next slide.

1526. The Lord and the devil

  1527. are opposites,

  1528. but are not equal.

  1529. The Lord is God.

  1530. The devil

  1531. is a fallen creature.

  1532. It's a very important thing

  1533. for us to remember.

  1534. They are opposites.

  1535. The Lord stoops

  1536. out of love

  1537. to make you clean.

  1538. The devil

  1539. casts worms

1540. that you might eat them

  1541. and become foul

  1542. and be destroyed.

1543. Many people in our culture

1544. who are afraid of God

  1545. are really afraid

  1546. of an imposter.

  1547. They do not realize

  1548. that who they think

  1549. of as God

1550. and how they describe God

  1551. is actually

  1552. they are describing

  1553. the devil.

  1554. And they are right

  1555. to run from him.

1556. But we are to proclaim

  1557. that that is not

  1558. the true God.

  1559. He is an imposter.

  1560. Then he is but

  1561. a fallen creature.

  1562. And Jesus

  1563. is the one

  1564. who reveals God

  1565. to us.

  1566. Next point.

  1567. The Lord loves you

  1568. knowing full well

  1569. that you are fallen

  1570. and frail.

  1571. The Lord loves you

  1572. knowing full well

  1573. that you are fallen

  1574. and frail.

  1575. He knew

  1576. that Peter

  1577. would deny him

  1578. when he washed

  1579. his feet.

  1580. He knows

  1581. your frailty

  1582. and mine

  1583. your sin

  1584. and mine

  1585. and still

  1586. he died

  1587. for you.

  1588. And the final point

  1589. please.

  1590. First the gospel

  1591. saves you

  1592. then the gospel

  1593. shapes you.

  1594. First the gospel

  1595. saves you

  1596. then the gospel

  1597. shapes you.

  1598. That is what

  1599. Jesus says here.

  1600. That as this story

  1601. of the fact

  1602. that I am clean

  1603. because the Lord

  1604. of the universe

  1605. stooped

  1606. to die upon

  1607. the cross

  1608. and by his

  1609. death

  1610. I don't understand

  1611. all of the

  1612. in a sense

  1613. what went on

  1614. in it

  1615. but I understand

  1616. that what he does

  1617. it is a profound

  1618. act to make me

  1619. clean.

  1620. His stooping

  1621. and loving

  1622. and stooping

  1623. and dying

  1624. and as that story

  1625. begins to grip us

  1626. it shapes us

  1627. to love one another

  1628. to serve one another

  1629. to take a turn

  1630. making coffee

  1631. to take a turn

1632. standing by a cold door

  1633. so we can use

  1634. this space

  1635. to look after

  1636. snotty nose

  1637. little

  1638. nine month olds

  1639. to serve the poor

  1640. to take risks

  1641. that as the gospel

  1642. first it saves you

  1643. but as we

  1644. think upon the gospel

  1645. more and more

  1646. and more

  1647. it shapes us

  1648. please stand

  1649. and if you have

  1650. you know

  1651. never given your life

  1652. to Jesus

  1653. there's no time

  1654. better than right now

  1655. to give your life

  1656. to Jesus

1657. and I would just say

  1658. Lord

  1659. be my savior

  1660. and make me clean

  1661. that's what I would say

1662. you don't have to be

  1663. very complicated

1664. you don't have to remember

  1665. I struggled

1666. I grew up in an

  1667. evangelical church

1668. and I think the minister

  1669. always used the exact

  1670. same words

  1671. and I would think

1672. do I have to remember

  1673. all these words

  1674. and they're like

  1675. no

1676. just think of John 13

  1677. and say

  1678. Jesus

  1679. make me clean

  1680. forever

1681. I want to be yours

1682. that's all you have to do

  1683. just listen to Jesus

  1684. there's no time

  1685. better than now

  1686. to do it

1687. let's just bow our heads

  1688. in prayer

  1689. Father

  1690. thank you so much

  1691. that you sent Jesus

  1692. Father

  1693. thank you

  1694. that not only

  1695. did you send Jesus

  1696. but Father

  1697. and Lord Jesus

  1698. thank you

  1699. that the Holy Spirit

1700. comes to move within us

1701. to draw us to Jesus

  1702. that Jesus

  1703. draws us to himself

  1704. Father

  1705. we just thank you

  1706. for

  1707. for

1708. all that you have done

  1709. to save us

  1710. we thank you

  1711. for Jesus

  1712. that he died

  1713. on the cross

  1714. it's an act

  1715. of stooping

  1716. to make us clean

  1717. when we

  1718. put our trust

  1719. in him

  1720. and he washes us

  1721. and makes us clean

  1722. forever

  1723. you make us clean

  1724. forever

  1725. Father

  1726. we ask that you

  1727. would make us

  1728. disciples of Jesus

  1729. who are gripped

  1730. by the gospel

  1731. learning to live

  1732. selflessly

  1733. and free

  1734. with love

  1735. for your glory

  1736. and all these things

1737. we ask in the name

  1738. of Jesus

  1739. your son

  1740. and our savior

  1741. amen
