  1. Let's pray together. Will you join me as we come before our Father?

  2. Heavenly Father, what an awesome, awesome privilege it is to come and to meet with you and to draw near to you again this morning.

  3. To encounter you, the living God. You, the one who made all the galaxies and the cosmos and the entire universe, God, beyond what we've even discovered.

  4. You, who, God, know the secrets at the depths of the bottom of the oceans, God.

  5. Things we don't even know or haven't discovered. You, the creator, God, and you invite us to come and draw near and to encounter you.

  6. God, it is an awesome privilege to come to you this morning.

  7. Thank you for sending Christ, our atoning sacrifice, to die in our place that we can draw near to you, that we can know you and know your love for us.

  8. Father, where could we find such a love as yours? Where could we find such a faithful God?

  9. Where could we go to find a life like you give us?

  10. You, God, are what our hearts truly need, and in you we find rest.

  11. In you, God, we see the world correctly. In you, we see ourselves correctly.

  12. Our fears and our concerns don't evaporate, but they're tempered, they're reduced, they are mitigated in the presence of your awesomeness.

  13. God, we've come to find hope for tomorrow, even in the midst of the confusion of today.

  14. And so we gather to be reminded of our unwavering hope that is in you.

  15. Father, this morning we also confess our many sins to you.

  16. Those that we are aware of, those, God, that we are unaware of,

  17. we acknowledge, God, just how much of our lives are consumed with self,

  18. living for our own glory rather than you, looking to ourselves rather than you.

  19. Father, forgive us, we pray.

  20. Thank you for communion.

  21. What a beautiful act and demonstration it is of your amazing grace.

  22. And God, as we come to your word this morning, we pray that you'll wash us in the gospel.

  23. Open our eyes to see you freshly, to be in awe of you and to trust you.

  24. Pray, God, for the next half an hour as we come to your word,

  25. that you really will, Spirit of God, take the words on these pages and apply it to our hearts.

  26. Father, we continue to pray for our city this morning and the unrest we're currently experiencing.

  27. Oh, God, give us profound wisdom to know how to live as salt and light in the midst of this.

  28. Father, we confess we don't know how to respond.

  29. At times we feel angry.

  30. At times we feel confused.

  31. At times we feel frightened.

  32. At times we feel boldened.

  33. Father, forgive us where our hearts' attitudes have dishonored you.

  34. God, where we've not glorified or worshipped your name,

  35. whether with our words, with our thoughts, or what we have or haven't done.

  36. Glorious God, we do ask you for a solution to the current situation,

  37. for people to find each other, to be able to talk.

  38. We pray for soft hearts.

  39. We pray for humility.

  40. We pray for peace to prevail in our city.

  41. Come and do it, God.

  42. Come, Lord Jesus, come.

  43. God, we pray for every Hong Konger this morning.

  44. Every foreigner.

  45. Pray for everyone from across Asia.

  46. Mainland Chinese, Singaporeans, Indonesians, Hong Kongers, Japanese.

  47. Pray for everyone that calls the city home.

  48. Come and wash our hearts in your peace, we pray, Lord.

  49. Lord, we pray these things, Lord Jesus, in your majestic and your comforting name.

  50. Amen.

  51. Amen.

  52. Let's listen to God's word being read to us this morning.

  53. Thanks, Karen and Pui.

  54. The scripture reading comes from Hebrews chapter 10.

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  55. Please follow along in your bulletins or on the screen.

  56. For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come,

  57. instead of the true form of these realities,

  58. it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year,

  59. make perfect those who draw near.

  60. Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered,

  61. since the worshipers, having once been cleansed,

  62. would no longer have any consciousness of sins.

  63. But in these sacrifices, there is a reminder of sins every year.

  64. For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

  65. Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said,

  66. Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired,

  67. but a body you have prepared for me.

  68. In burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure.

  69. Then I said,

  70. Behold, I have come to do your will, O God,

  71. as it is written of me in the scroll of the book.

  72. When he said above,

  73. You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices

  74. and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings.

  75. These are offered according to the law.

  76. Then he added,

  77. Behold, I have come to do your will.

  78. He does away with the first in order to establish the second.

  79. And by that will,

  80. We have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

  81. And every priest stands daily at his service,

  82. offering repeatedly the same sacrifices,

  83. which can never take away sins.

  84. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins,

  85. he sat down at the right hand of God,

  86. waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet.

  87. For by a single offering,

  88. he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.

  89. And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us,

  90. for after saying,

  91. This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord.

  92. I will put my laws on their hearts and write them on their minds.

  93. Then he adds,

  94. I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.

  95. When there is forgiveness of these,

  96. there is no longer any offering for sin.

  97. Therefore, brothers,

  98. since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus,

  99. by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain,

  100. that is, through his flesh,

  101. and since we have a great priest over the house of God,

  102. let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith,

  103. with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience,

  104. and our bodies washed with pure water.

  105. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering,

  106. for he who promised is faithful.

  107. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works,

  108. not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some,

  109. but encouraging one another,

  110. and all the more as you see the day drawing near.

  111. For if we go on sinning deliberately,

  112. after receiving the knowledge of the truth,

  113. there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,

  114. but a fearful expectation of judgment,

  115. and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries.

  116. Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses

  117. dies without mercy on the evidence of two or three witnesses.

  118. How much worse punishment do you think

  119. will be deserved by the one who has trampled underfoot the Son of God

  120. and has profaned the blood of the covenant

  121. by which he was sanctified

  122. and has outraged the Spirit of grace?

  123. For we know him who said,

  124. Vengeance is mine, I will repay.

  125. And again,

  126. The Lord will judge his people.

  127. It is a fearful thing

  128. to fall into the hands of the living God.

  129. But recall the former days

  130. when after you were enlightened,

  131. you endured a hard struggle with sufferings,

  132. sometimes being publicly exposed to reproach and affliction,

  133. and sometimes being partners with those so treated.

  134. For you had compassion on those in prison,

  135. and you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property,

  136. since you knew that you yourselves

  137. had a better possession and an abiding one.

  138. Therefore, do not throw away your confidence,

  139. which has a great reward.

  140. For you have need of endurance,

  141. so that when you have done the will of God,

  142. you may receive what is promised.

  143. For

  144. Yet a little while,

  145. and the coming one will come,

  146. and will not delay.

  147. But my righteous one shall live by faith,

  148. and if he shrinks back,

  149. my soul has no pleasure in him.

  150. This is the Word of God.

  151. Is this on?

  152. Great.

  153. Thanks, Karen.

  154. I know that was a long passage,

  155. so thank you for reading it so well.

  156. Okay, this morning,

  157. we are starting a three-week preaching series

  158. called Why Worship?

  159. And we are looking at the question,

  160. why it is that Christians gather on Sundays,

  161. the first day of the week,

  162. to sing songs,

  163. and listen to a sermon,

  164. and take communion together,

  165. and listen to God's Word being read to us.

  166. Why do Christians do this?

  167. Why do we gather on Sundays?

  168. I'm sure many of us have heard people say,

  169. maybe you yourself have even said it,

  170. maybe you currently would say,

  171. that, you know,

  172. I believe in Jesus,

  173. I'm fine with Jesus,

  174. but the church,

  175. I don't see why I need to go to church.

  176. Maybe as we think about that question,

  177. why do we gather on Sundays,

  178. week in and week out,

  179. I wonder what answers come to your mind.

  180. Why do you think we gather?

  181. Maybe you think the reason we meet each week

  182. is because we need to be inspired and motivated

  183. to go out into the week

  184. and live moral upstanding lives,

  185. to be good citizens,

  186. and church is a good place to do that,

  187. to teach us the morals.

  188. Maybe you think that the reason we gather

  189. is to hear an interesting or entertaining talk,

  190. something philosophical,

  191. some psychology or spirituality,

  192. something to entertain our minds

  193. that are intellectually stimulating.

  194. Maybe it's a moral prep talk

  195. to encourage us to be better people.

  196. For those of you that are on youth,

  197. why do your parents drag you to church each Sunday?

  198. Maybe that's a question you've been asking them recently.

  199. So the next few weeks,

  200. we're going to look at this question.

  201. Why is it that for 2,000 years,

  202. Christians of every culture,

  203. every ethnicity,

  204. in every corner of the globe,

  205. have gathered week in and week out,

  206. just as we're doing today,

  207. and why it is that believers have seen this

  208. as one of the great privileges

  209. and great responsibilities

  210. of being a follower of Jesus?

  211. Now, in order to think about this question,

  212. we need to actually think about

  213. another question before that.

  214. And we need to first answer the question,

  215. what is the Christian faith all about?

  216. What is the essence,

  217. the most fundamental part

  218. of the gospel and the Christian faith?

  219. Because once we have clarity on that,

  220. we can then understand

  221. why it is that God instructs Christians

  222. not to abandon this weekly practice

  223. of gathering together.

  224. And in our passage

  225. that Karen and Pui read to us today,

  226. the passage Hebrews 10

  227. actually answers both of those questions

  228. with real clarity.

  229. In the first half,

  230. it explains to us

  231. what is the gospel?

  232. What is the Christian message all about?

  233. And then secondly,

  234. it's going to say in light of that,

  235. why we should gather as Christians

  236. weekly on Sundays, okay?

  237. So that's where we are going today.

  238. Now, today I have three or four points

  239. somewhere around there.

  240. I had originally had three points,

  241. but as I woke up this morning,

  242. I'm actually going to make them four points.

  243. And so this is a little bit out,

  244. but I'm sure you can follow with me.

  245. The first one is this,

  246. Jesus, our only hope.

  247. Secondly, the gospel for all of life.

  248. Okay, that's kind of point one there.

  249. Thirdly, a gospelizing community.

  250. I know the word gospelizing

  251. isn't a real word.

  252. We kind of made it up here,

  253. but anyway.

  254. And then fourthly,

  255. how to come to church, okay?

  256. So Jesus, our only hope,

  257. a gospel for all of life,

  258. a gospelizing community,

  259. how to come to church.

  260. So let's dive in.

  261. Firstly, Jesus, our only hope.

  262. This morning,

  263. we're looking at Hebrews chapter 10.

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  264. And the context of Hebrews is this.

  265. The writer of this book of the Bible,

  266. we actually don't know who it is.

  267. Some writer,

  268. we've never figured it out

  269. who wrote this book,

  270. but he's writing to a bunch

  271. of Jewish Christians.

  272. That's why it's called

  273. the book of Hebrews.

  274. And he's writing to explain

  275. to these Jewish Christians

  276. how Jesus Christ is the fulfillment

  277. of everything that God did

  278. and said and promised

  279. to his covenant people,

  280. the nation of Israel,

  281. in the Old Testament.

  282. And he's showing them

  283. how all of the major stuff

  284. in the Old Testament,

  285. part of the Jewish Hebrew faith,

  286. the narratives,

  287. the law of Moses,

  288. the pictures,

  289. the signs,

  290. the symbols,

  291. the sacrifices,

  292. all of that is actually

  293. a foretaste

  294. or a sample

  295. or a sign

  296. which is all pointing

  297. towards Jesus.

  298. Okay, so here's an example.

  299. In our family,

  300. we like to have people

  301. around for dinner.

  302. And Claire,

  303. my wife,

  304. is an amazing cook.

  305. And so let's say

  306. it's a Saturday evening

  307. and some friends

  308. are coming around for dinner.

  309. I know Saturday afternoon

  310. and evening,

  311. Claire's going to be

  312. in the kitchen

  313. preparing a whole lot

  314. of different dishes.

  315. And so what do I love to do?

  316. I love to go into the kitchen

  317. and just sample

  318. the various things, right?

  319. Try a bit of this

  320. and a bit of this

  321. and nibble on that.

  322. I love it.

  323. Now in some ways,

  324. that's what's happening here.

  325. The author is saying,

  326. don't you see

  327. how everything,

  328. the sacrifices

  329. and the high priest

  330. and the temple,

  331. all these things

  332. in the Old Testament

  333. and especially

  334. the law of Moses

  335. are like a sample.

  336. They're like a foretaste

  337. of the real thing

  338. that's to come,

  339. which is Jesus.

  340. They are all showing us

  341. in sample form

  342. what God is doing

  343. in the world.

  344. And what is God

  345. doing in the world?

  346. He's establishing

  347. His rule

  348. and His reign.

  349. In other words,

  350. His kingdom.

  351. He is vanquishing

  352. or destroying

  353. His enemies,

  354. including Satan

  355. and sin,

  356. and He's establishing

  357. His kingdom

  358. on the earth.

  359. But all of that

  360. ultimately happens

  361. in Jesus.

  362. You see,

  363. the rites of Hebrews

  364. isn't saying,

  365. hey,

  366. we once thought

  367. Judaism was right,

  368. but now we've seen

  369. Christianity was right,

  370. and so I'm asking you

  371. to switch religions.

  372. That's not what

  373. He's asking you to do.

  374. He's saying,

  375. everything you've heard

  376. and seen

  377. and understood

  378. as you've read

  379. your Jewish Bible

  380. is good

  381. and true

  382. and right,

  383. but it's all pointing.

  384. It's a signpost.

  385. It's a foretaste

  386. of the real thing,

  387. which is Jesus.

  388. And so for 10 chapters,

  389. He has been making

  390. this point.

  391. And so let's see

  392. how He gets there

  393. as He climaxes

  394. His arguments

  395. in chapter 10.

  396. Look at verse 1.

  397. He says,

  398. For since the law

  399. of Moses

  400. is but a shadow

  401. of the good things

  402. to come,

  403. instead of the true

  404. form of these realities,

  405. they can never,

  406. by the same sacrifices

  407. that are continually

  408. offered year in

  409. and year out,

  410. make perfect

  411. those who draw near.

  412. Verse 3.

  413. For in these sacrifices

  414. there is a reminder

  415. of sins,

  416. but it is impossible

  417. for the blood

  418. of bulls and goats

  419. to take away sins.

  420. So what is this thing

  421. that the law

  422. of Moses

  423. in sample form

  424. could tell us about,

  425. could give us

  426. a foretaste of,

  427. but couldn't actually

  428. deliver in substance?

  429. Well,

  430. He tells us here.

  431. It could not

  432. take away our sin.

  433. It could show us

  434. the problem of sin.

  435. It could show us

  436. how we need a solution

  437. and we need a Savior,

  438. but it could not

  439. solve our problem.

  440. It could not make us

  441. righteous before God,

  442. those who adhere

  443. or obey the law.

  444. You see, friends,

  445. this is the heart

  446. of the Bible's message.

  447. At the heart

  448. of the Bible

  449. is this message

  450. that as human beings

  451. we have this problem.

  452. And it's a problem

  453. that we can't solve

  454. on ourselves,

  455. by ourselves.

  456. And the problem

  457. He describes here

  458. in verse 4

  459. is that we have

  460. this debt of sin.

  461. And the problem

  462. with sin

  463. is far-reaching.

  464. It means the God

  465. who made us

  466. for relationship

  467. with Him,

  468. to know Him,

  469. and to love Him,

  470. and to walk with Him,

  471. and to be close to Him,

  472. and to find our hope

  473. and our rest

  474. and our peace in Him,

  475. we now no longer

  476. know Him,

  477. but we're actually

  478. under His judgment.

  479. We're under His wrath.

  480. And we are cut off

  481. from His grace,

  482. and cut off from

  483. knowing Him

  484. and knowing His relationship.

  485. But not only that,

  486. remember how Augustine

  487. said,

  488. the problem with sin

  489. is that it disorders

  490. the loves in our hearts.

  491. And so when we were made

  492. to know God

  493. and love Him

  494. and find our rest

  495. and our confidence

  496. in Him,

  497. now suddenly we love

  498. and trust

  499. and find our confidence

  500. in created things

  501. and things around us,

  502. our reputation,

  503. our jobs,

  504. our careers,

  505. our children,

  506. our bank accounts,

  507. ultimately in ourselves.

  508. Augustine said,

  509. sin caused us

  510. to be curved in

  511. on ourselves,

  512. to look inward

  513. and to look to ourselves

  514. for our hope.

  515. And friends,

  516. this is the problem

  517. with the world

  518. and this is the problem

  519. with my world.

  520. And I'm telling you,

  521. chances are I think

  522. it's the problem

  523. with your world.

  524. You see,

  525. the problem with my world

  526. isn't political

  527. or economic

  528. or family issues.

  529. Those things are difficult.

  530. That's true.

  531. But the main problem

  532. with my world

  533. is that I'm so self-centered.

  534. I'm self-orientated.

  535. My heart is curved in

  536. on myself.

  537. My life,

  538. my heart has been corrupted

  539. by this cancer of sin.

  540. And I now love

  541. and serve

  542. and hope

  543. and trust in myself.

  544. I saw this

  545. a little while ago.

  546. Claire and I

  547. were having

  548. a difficult,

  549. I guess a difficulty

  550. with a family member,

  551. an extended family member.

  552. And I felt like

  553. this family member

  554. was being very unreasonable

  555. to us.

  556. And they were accusing us

  557. of things

  558. that we thought

  559. we hadn't done.

  560. And it was a little bit

  561. difficult and tense.

  562. And the more unreasonable

  563. this person was being

  564. towards us,

  565. the more frustrated

  566. and irritated

  567. and upset

  568. and even angry

  569. I was getting

  570. towards this person.

  571. And so I would,

  572. when I was alone

  573. at night,

  574. I would think about

  575. the conversation we had

  576. and I'd play it over

  577. in my mind.

  578. And then I would

  579. play an imaginary

  580. conversation in my mind

  581. what would happen

  582. the next time I see them.

  583. They're going to say this

  584. and then I'm going to say this

  585. and then they're going to say this

  586. and then I'm going to

  587. nail them with this.

  588. Does that sound familiar?

  589. Sounds like I'm not

  590. the only one

  591. that's done that.

  592. And so I was in the midst

  593. of all this

  594. and the one day

  595. I went for a prayer walk

  596. and as I was praying

  597. about it

  598. I just realized

  599. how my self-righteousness

  600. and my sense

  601. of superiority,

  602. my sense of moral superiority

  603. was actually exasperating

  604. and contributing

  605. towards the problem.

  606. You see,

  607. yeah,

  608. sure there's difficulties

  609. but it's my own

  610. self-righteousness

  611. that was actually

  612. making things

  613. even worse.

  614. Remember how

  615. Salman Rushdie

  616. in one of his novels

  617. said,

  618. the barbarians

  619. weren't just at the gates

  620. they were in our skins.

  621. The problem

  622. isn't just out there

  623. it's in here

  624. it's in my life

  625. and friends

  626. it's in your life as well.

  627. And so God

  628. in the Old Testament

  629. he gives his people

  630. these signs

  631. and these symbols

  632. and these pictures

  633. to show them

  634. the problem of sin

  635. and the need for forgiveness

  636. but the problem

  637. is the pictures

  638. and the signs

  639. can't actually do

  640. what they need.

  641. And so verse 3 says

  642. these sacrifices

  643. there's a reminder of sin

  644. but it is impossible

  645. for the blood

  646. of bulls and goats

  647. to actually take away sin.

  648. And yet

  649. this is where

  650. the astonishingly good news

  651. of the gospel comes in

  652. because of God's

  653. radical love for us.

  654. He didn't leave us

  655. to our own devices.

  656. He didn't leave us

  657. to ourselves

  658. but he came to us

  659. in the person of Jesus.

  660. He died on the cross.

  661. He took our sin

  662. upon himself

  663. so that we can be

  664. washed free

  665. so that we can be

  666. set free

  667. because of him.

  668. But friends

  669. Jesus didn't only die

  670. to save us

  671. from the penalty

  672. of our sin

  673. but also

  674. from the power of sin.

  675. Look at how

  676. the writer says this

  677. in verse 11

  678. if you've got your

  679. bulletin with you.

  680. He says this

  681. under the old covenant

  682. every priest

  683. would stand daily

  684. at the service

  685. offering repeated

  686. the same sacrifices

  687. which can never

  688. take away sin.

  689. There's our problem again.

  690. But

  691. verse 12

  692. when God

  693. when Christ

  694. had offered

  695. for all time

  696. a single sacrifice

  697. for sins

  698. dying on the cross

  699. rising again

  700. ascending to the heavens

  701. he sat down

  702. at the right hand

  703. of God the Father

  704. until his enemies

  705. should become

  706. his footstools

  707. for his feet.

  708. See the author

  709. here is giving us

  710. this amazing picture

  711. that Jesus dies

  712. he ascends

  713. to heaven

  714. and then

  715. what does he do?

  716. He sits down

  717. he's at rest

  718. he's completed

  719. his job.

  720. You see friends

  721. Jesus isn't in heaven

  722. today

  723. running around

  724. scurrying

  725. to and fro

  726. trying to juggle

  727. a billion prayer requests

  728. and hoping

  729. he doesn't drop

  730. any balls

  731. hoping like

  732. mad

  733. that things

  734. in Hong Kong

  735. work out

  736. and in America

  737. work out

  738. and that

  739. at the end of the day

  740. his kingdom

  741. will finally be established.

  742. No friends

  743. what did he do?

  744. When he got to heaven

  745. the author says

  746. he sat down

  747. job done

  748. having accomplished

  749. what he set out to do

  750. having established

  751. his kingdom

  752. and destroyed

  753. his enemies

  754. he sat down

  755. job done.

  756. Remember

  757. that song

  758. we sometimes sing

  759. in this church

  760. when Satan

  761. tempts me to despair

  762. and tells me

  763. of the guilt within

  764. upward I look

  765. and see him there

  766. who made an end

  767. to all my sin.

  768. And so when Jesus

  769. is on the cross

  770. he cries out

  771. it is finished

  772. it is paid

  773. in full

  774. or as our verse

  775. 11 says here

  776. when Christ

  777. had offered

  778. for all time

  779. a single sacrifice

  780. for sins

  781. he sat down.

  782. And so friends

  783. what that means

  784. is that

  785. if you are in Christ

  786. and you've surrendered

  787. to him

  788. and you've come to him

  789. it means your sin

  790. has been totally

  791. dealt with

  792. your record of sin

  793. has been done away with

  794. it is finished

  795. your debt

  796. is paid in full

  797. your sins

  798. have been removed

  799. as far as the east

  800. is from the west

  801. or as Malachi says

  802. they've been thrown

  803. into the depths

  804. of the sea

  805. never to be recovered

  806. again.

  807. It means friends

  808. that if you are in Christ

  809. you have no reason

  810. to ever feel

  811. unworthy

  812. unloved

  813. unlovable

  814. ever again

  815. because Christ

  816. has dealt

  817. with your sins

  818. totally and utterly

  819. forever.

  820. except

  821. if you're anything

  822. like me

  823. when I look

  824. at my life

  825. something doesn't

  826. feel quite right

  827. about that

  828. because on the one

  829. hand the Bible

  830. says Christ

  831. deals with our sin

  832. it's completely

  833. done with

  834. he is perfected

  835. for all time

  836. I stand before

  837. God the Father

  838. perfect

  839. because of Jesus

  840. but as I look

  841. into my own heart

  842. I see that I'm

  843. very far from perfect

  844. there's all sorts

  845. of rubbish

  846. in my heart

  847. there's defensiveness

  848. there's judgmentalism

  849. there's self-moralism

  850. and superiority

  851. and so what do we do

  852. with this dichotomy

  853. on one hand

  854. the gospel says

  855. you are washed

  856. you are clean

  857. you are sanctified

  858. but on the other hand

  859. the gospel says

  860. you're still a work

  861. in progress

  862. how do we deal

  863. with this dichotomy

  864. and that leads us

  865. to the second point

  866. which is that

  867. the gospel

  868. doesn't just save us

  869. for eternity

  870. the gospel

  871. is for all of life

  872. look at how

  873. the writer

  874. says this

  875. in verse 14

  876. this is one of the

  877. most important verses

  878. to understand

  879. the Christian life

  880. look at what he says

  881. he says

  882. for by a single offering

  883. God has perfected

  884. or Christ has perfected

  885. for all time

  886. those who are

  887. busy being

  888. sanctified

  889. the word sanctified

  890. means

  891. to be made holy

  892. to be made righteous

  893. to be cleansed

  894. to be made

  895. like Jesus

  896. so here we see

  897. by a single offering

  898. by a single sacrifice

  899. Christ has perfected

  900. for all time

  901. holy in Christ's sight

  902. those who are busy

  903. being

  904. sanctified

  905. or another translation

  906. says

  907. those who are busy

  908. being made perfect

  909. you see that

  910. on one hand

  911. Christ's sacrifice

  912. makes me righteous

  913. before God

  914. but on the other hand

  915. God is still at work

  916. in my heart

  917. and making me

  918. more like Jesus

  919. and friends

  920. this is the Christian life

  921. this is the hope

  922. of the gospel

  923. that Jesus deals

  924. with our status

  925. before God

  926. but he's also

  927. at work in our hearts

  928. that slowly

  929. sometimes too slowly

  930. in my own life

  931. very slowly

  932. over time

  933. my heart starts

  934. to look like him

  935. and so look at how

  936. he says this

  937. in verse

  938. 15 and 16

  939. he says

  940. for by a single offering

  941. he has perfected

  942. for all time

  943. those who are

  944. being sanctified

  945. this is as the Holy Spirit

  946. said

  947. this is the covenant

  948. I will make with them

  949. I will put my laws

  950. into their hearts

  951. and I will write them

  952. on my minds

  953. and remember

  954. their sins

  955. no more

  956. now

  957. here's the question

  958. how does this

  959. actually happen

  960. how does God

  961. do this

  962. how does God

  963. grow us

  964. and mature us

  965. and to make us

  966. more like Jesus

  967. because friends

  968. you can be a follower

  969. of Jesus

  970. for 30 years

  971. and still be a baby

  972. Christian

  973. just

  974. you know

  975. length of time

  976. doesn't necessarily

  977. equate to maturity

  978. so how does God

  979. actually grow us

  980. and mature us

  981. and to sanctify us

  982. and to make us

  983. more like Jesus

  984. and the answer

  985. is this

  986. it happens

  987. as we see

  988. with the eyes

  989. of our hearts

  990. the glory

  991. and the beauty

  992. and the majesty

  993. of Jesus

  994. as we are humbled

  995. by his awesomeness

  996. and as we turn

  997. to him

  998. in faith

  999. and repentance

  1000. in other words

  1001. as we see

  1002. who Christ is

  1003. and the gospel

  1004. gets deeper

  1005. into our hearts

  1006. and in light

  1007. of God

  1008. we recognize

  1009. our sinfulness

  1010. and we turn

  1011. to him

  1012. in faith

  1013. and repentance

  1014. God actually

  1015. reorientates

  1016. the orders

  1017. of our hearts

  1018. and makes our hearts

1019. to become more like Jesus

  1020. he sanctifies us

  1021. and grows us

  1022. and works in us

  1023. so let me

  1024. give you an example

  1025. when we experience

  1026. a conflict

  1027. in our lives

  1028. okay

  1029. so let's say

  1030. you've got a family member

1031. like a little while ago

  1032. I had

  1033. and someone

  1034. who challenges you

  1035. and they accuse you

  1036. of things

  1037. and they

  1038. are unreasonable

  1039. what happens

  1040. in our lives

  1041. well if you're anything

  1042. like me

  1043. you feel defensive

  1044. you start to justify

  1045. ourselves

  1046. we start to

  1047. think about

  1048. what they've done wrong

  1049. we maximize

  1050. their wrongdoing

  1051. and we minimize

  1052. our own wrongdoing

1053. now why do I do that

  1054. what's going on

  1055. in my heart

1056. why do I do that

1057. the reason I do that

  1058. and the reason

  1059. friends possibly

  1060. why most of us

  1061. do that

  1062. is because I'm trying

  1063. to find my justification

  1064. in the fact that

  1065. I'm not such a bad person

1066. I'm trying to make myself

  1067. feel good about myself

  1068. because I'm not secure

1069. in the love of Christ

  1070. I don't like the fact

  1071. that I'm a sinner

  1072. but that Christ's love

  1073. is enough for me

1074. and so I'm trying to

  1075. feel good about myself

  1076. and find my justification

  1077. in the fact that

  1078. though I'm not perfect

1079. at least I'm not as bad

  1080. as those people

  1081. down there

  1082. does that make sense

1083. and so what do I need

1084. I need to see Christ

1085. I need to be humbled

  1086. by his awesomeness

1087. and I need to come to him

  1088. in faith and repentance

1089. and as I do that

  1090. Christ works

  1091. and softens my heart

  1092. so that actually

  1093. I approach that person

  1094. with a completely

  1095. different spirit

  1096. I see that actually

  1097. maybe they are not

  1098. the problem after all

  1099. maybe I'm the problem

  1100. and friends

1101. we do this in a million ways

1102. we do this with our kids

1103. we do it with our career

1104. we do it with finances

1105. we look to all sorts

1106. of things to justify us

1107. but the hope of the gospel

  1108. is that Jesus

1109. doesn't just wipe our state

  1110. clean and give us

  1111. a second chance

  1112. he's actually at work

  1113. in our lives

  1114. and he's changing us

1115. to make us more like him

  1116. friends the gospel

1117. isn't just that Jesus says

  1118. I'll pay your debts

1119. and now you pull yourself

  1120. back together again

1121. the gospel is a power

1122. that not only saves us

  1123. but it sanctifies us

  1124. believing in Christ

  1125. and the gospel

  1126. not only forgives us

  1127. of our debt

  1128. it changes our hearts

1129. to become more like him

1130. as we see the majesty

  1131. of Jesus

  1132. and believe in him

  1133. and that's why

  1134. friends

  1135. as a church

1136. we make such a big deal

  1137. of the gospel

1138. it's why everything we do

  1139. is centered on this

  1140. centered on the wonder

  1141. of the gospel

  1142. because loving

  1143. and trusting

  1144. and hoping in Jesus

1145. is not only the way

1146. into the kingdom of life

  1147. it's also the way

1148. of the kingdom of life

1149. it's not only the way

  1150. by which you become

  1151. a Christian

  1152. it's the way

  1153. by which you grow

  1154. as a Christian

1155. it's not just the way

  1156. that you get saved

  1157. it's the way

  1158. to be sanctified

  1159. learning to live

  1160. by faith in Jesus

  1161. and his gospel

  1162. the fact that you

  1163. and I are sinners

  1164. but we are loved

  1165. by God

  1166. and he joyfully

  1167. and willingly died

  1168. for us

  1169. that's the Christian life

  1170. that's what the whole

  1171. Bible is all about

  1172. that's what it means

  1173. to be a Christian

  1174. and so that's why

  1175. in the New Testament

1176. Paul writes to the Romans

  1177. these bunch of people

  1178. that are Christians

  1179. and he says

1180. I can't wait to come to you

1181. so that I can preach

  1182. the gospel to you

  1183. why does he need

  1184. to preach the gospel

  1185. to them

  1186. they're already Christians

  1187. because as the gospel

1188. gets deeper into our hearts

1189. that's how we live out

  1190. the gospel

  1191. that's how we become

1192. the people God's called us to be

  1193. that's why Paul writes

  1194. in 1 Corinthians

  1195. and he says

  1196. to this gospel community

  1197. he says

1198. at the end of the letter

  1199. now brothers

  1200. I thought I'd just take

  1201. a few minutes

  1202. just to remind you

  1203. of the gospel

  1204. why does he need

  1205. to remind them

  1206. because if they're

  1207. going to become

  1208. the people

  1209. that God's called

  1210. them to be

  1211. they need to be

  1212. reminded day in

  1213. day out

  1214. of the gospel

  1215. now

  1216. all that brings us

  1217. to the question

1218. what does this have to do

  1219. with Christians

  1220. gathering on Sundays

  1221. okay

  1222. all that's by way

  1223. of introduction

  1224. now let's finally

  1225. start the sermon

  1226. okay not really

  1227. point three

  1228. why do we gather

  1229. on Sundays

  1230. the reason we gather

  1231. is because we are

  1232. a gospelizing community

  1233. in other words

  1234. the essence of what

  1235. the church does

  1236. is that we wash

1237. each other with the gospel

  1238. week in

  1239. and week out

  1240. let's look at

  1241. verse 19

  1242. to 25

  1243. together

  1244. look at what

  1245. the writer's

  1246. going to say here

  1247. he's going to say

  1248. therefore

  1249. in light of

  1250. everything we've said

1251. for ten and a half

  1252. chapters

  1253. in light of

  1254. who Jesus is

  1255. and how he died

  1256. on the cross

  1257. to save us

  1258. and to forgive us

1259. in light of the fact

  1260. that he has

  1261. perfected for all time

  1262. those he is busy

  1263. perfecting

  1264. therefore

  1265. let us

  1266. xyz

  1267. okay

1268. so as we read this

  1269. look out for where

  1270. he says

  1271. therefore let us

  1272. okay

  1273. let's read

  1274. verse 19

  1275. together

  1276. he says this

  1277. therefore brothers

  1278. and sisters

  1279. since we have

  1280. confidence to enter

  1281. the holy place

  1282. by the blood of

  1283. Jesus

  1284. verse 21

  1285. and since we have

  1286. a great high priest

  1287. over the house of

  1288. God

  1289. that's Jesus

  1290. let us

  1291. draw near to God

  1292. with a true heart

  1293. and full assurance

  1294. of faith

  1295. with our hearts

  1296. sprinkled clean

  1297. from an evil conscience

  1298. and our bodies

  1299. washed with pure water

  1300. let us secondly

  1301. hold fast

  1302. to the confession

  1303. of our hope

  1304. without wavering

  1305. knowing that he

  1306. who promised

  1307. is faithful

  1308. and thirdly

  1309. let us

  1310. consider how to

  1311. stir up one another

  1312. to love

  1313. and good deeds

  1314. not neglecting

  1315. to meet together

  1316. as is the habit

  1317. of some

  1318. but encouraging

  1319. one another

  1320. and all the more

  1321. as you see

  1322. the day of Christ

  1323. approaching

  1324. okay

  1325. did you see that

  1326. he said

  1327. therefore

1328. in light of the fact

  1329. that Christ

  1330. is at work

  1331. he's busy

  1332. sanctifying us

  1333. Jesus has died

  1334. for our sins

  1335. but he's also died

  1336. to change our hearts

  1337. and he's making us

  1338. more like him

  1339. therefore

  1340. let us

  1341. draw near to God

  1342. let us

  1343. hold fast

  1344. to the hope

  1345. of the gospel

  1346. but thirdly

  1347. let us

  1348. stir up

  1349. and encourage

  1350. one another

  1351. how so

  1352. how should we

  1353. do that

  1354. verse 25

  1355. by not

  1356. neglecting

  1357. to meet together

  1358. as some people

  1359. do

  1360. but to encourage

  1361. one another

  1362. and all the more

  1363. as we see

  1364. the day of Christ

  1365. approaching

  1366. you see friends

  1367. why do Christians

  1368. gather every single

  1369. week

  1370. yes we gather

  1371. to worship

  1372. that's true

  1373. but worship

  1374. isn't just

  1375. singing songs

  1376. remember how

  1377. in Corinthians

  1378. Paul says

  1379. let everything

  1380. you do

  1381. be worship

  1382. whether you're

  1383. eating

  1384. dumplings

  1385. or drinking

  1386. bubble tea

  1387. or you're going

  1388. to work

  1389. or you are

  1390. proposing

  1391. to your girlfriend

  1392. let everything

  1393. you do

  1394. be an act

  1395. of worship

  1396. so we come

  1397. to church

  1398. to worship

  1399. but not just

  1400. that's not the only

  1401. reason we come

  1402. we come

  1403. to be blown away

  1404. by the wonder

  1405. of the gospel

  1406. and who Christ

  1407. is

  1408. so that as we

  1409. go into the week

  1410. Monday to Friday

  1411. we can live

  1412. lives of worship

1413. we can go to the

  1414. office as an act

  1415. of worship

  1416. we can engage

  1417. with our colleagues

  1418. as an act

  1419. of worship

  1420. we can serve

  1421. the poor

  1422. and help out

  1423. and love our

  1424. neighbors

  1425. as an act

  1426. of worship

  1427. you see friends

  1428. if you and I

  1429. are going to

  1430. become anything

  1431. like the men

  1432. or the women

  1433. that God

  1434. has called us

  1435. to be

  1436. you and I

  1437. need to be

  1438. living from

  1439. the security

  1440. of the gospel

  1441. and we need

  1442. to be living

  1443. out the gospel

  1444. day by day

  1445. seven days a week

  1446. but you know

  1447. what

  1448. the gospel

  1449. leaks

  1450. it leaks

  1451. from our hearts

  1452. and so on Sunday

  1453. you come to church

  1454. and you're washed

  1455. in the gospel

  1456. and you're secure

  1457. in who Christ is

  1458. and his love

  1459. for you

  1460. and then on Monday

  1461. morning you wake up

1462. and you've got to get

1463. the kids ready for school

1464. and you're ready for work

1465. or you've got an assignment

  1466. to hand in

  1467. and you go off

  1468. and by Monday

  1469. lunchtime

  1470. your boss is shouting

  1471. at you

  1472. and a client

  1473. is upset with you

  1474. and suddenly

  1475. you're getting a little

  1476. bit worried

  1477. and anxious

  1478. that things aren't

  1479. as good as you

  1480. thought they were

  1481. and by Wednesday

  1482. the stock market

  1483. has crashed

  1484. and you're seeing

  1485. your wealth come down

  1486. and you're pulling

  1487. your hair out

  1488. and by Friday

  1489. you've done something

  1490. wrong

  1491. I don't have much

  1492. hair to pull out

  1493. but if you're a female

  1494. you're pulling your hair

  1495. out

  1496. and by Friday

  1497. you've said something

  1498. dumb to somebody

  1499. or you looked at

  1500. something you shouldn't

  1501. have looked at

1502. or you lied to somebody

  1503. and you feel like

  1504. God hates you

  1505. and he could never

  1506. love you

  1507. friends

  1508. in that moment

  1509. what do you need

1510. when you come to church

  1511. on Sunday

  1512. I'll tell you

  1513. what you don't need

  1514. you don't need

  1515. a pep talk

  1516. or a motivational

  1517. or inspiration talk

  1518. saying you can be

  1519. a better person

  1520. you don't need

  1521. some inspiration

  1522. telling you

1523. how to look after yourself

  1524. or five ways

  1525. to make your life

  1526. successful

1527. what you and I need

  1528. friends

  1529. is to be washed

  1530. by the incredible gospel

  1531. that yes we sinners

  1532. but Christ loves us

1533. and he loves us so much

1534. that he went to the cross

  1535. for us

  1536. and even this week

1537. things are going to go

  1538. wrong again

1539. but he still loves you

1540. because his love for you

  1541. isn't based on what's

  1542. in your heart

  1543. it's based on what's

  1544. in his heart

  1545. for you

1546. we need to be washed

  1547. in the gospel

  1548. friends

  1549. every week

  1550. we are washed

  1551. by an anti-gospel message

  1552. every week

  1553. in our city

  1554. we are told

  1555. that God helps

  1556. those who help themselves

  1557. we live in a

  1558. extreme meritocracy

  1559. don't we

  1560. in Hong Kong

  1561. you get ahead

  1562. by working hard

  1563. and being richly rewarded

1564. and if you do the right things

1565. and you don't mess up

  1566. Hong Kong says

1567. your life will be a success

  1568. friends

  1569. every week

  1570. we are told

  1571. an anti-gospel message

  1572. that our hope

  1573. for the world

1574. is found in political solutions

  1575. economic solutions

  1576. or academic grades

  1577. friends

1578. that is a false gospel

1579. it is a false hope

1580. and unless you and I

  1581. are washed

  1582. in the true gospel

  1583. the cultural waters

  1584. in which we swim

  1585. are going to change

  1586. our thinking

  1587. and change the way

  1588. we approach life

  1589. friends

  1590. we need to come

  1591. and find our hope

  1592. in Jesus again

  1593. friends

  1594. what happens

  1595. when things go wrong

  1596. in our life

  1597. the child is diagnosed

  1598. with some disease

  1599. you lose your job

  1600. a spouse is unfaithful

  1601. to you

  1602. what happens

  1603. when things go right

  1604. in your life

1605. you make a billion dollars

1606. and you've got more money

1607. than you know what to deal with

  1608. what happens

  1609. when your picture is

  1610. on the front cover

1611. of all the business magazines

  1612. the front page

  1613. of the newspaper

  1614. and you're heralded

  1615. at a success

1616. what's going to stop you

  1617. getting proud and arrogant

1618. what's going to stop you

  1619. thinking that you're

  1620. better than others

  1621. friends

1622. we need to be washed

  1623. in the gospel

  1624. week in

  1625. and week out

  1626. and so the writer

  1627. of the Hebrews

  1628. after spending

  1629. ten chapters

  1630. describing the length

  1631. and the breadth

  1632. and the fullness

  1633. and the height

  1634. and the wonder

  1635. of the glory

  1636. of the gospel

  1637. Jesus' death

  1638. on his cross

  1639. and our hope

  1640. in life and death

  1641. says this

  1642. therefore

  1643. do not neglect

  1644. to meet together

  1645. but gather

  1646. and encourage

  1647. one another

  1648. and all the more

  1649. as you see

  1650. the day of Christ

  1651. approaching

  1652. three or four weeks

  1653. five weeks ago

  1654. you might remember

  1655. we preached

  1656. the book of Habakkuk

1657. and we got to Habakkuk

  1658. chapter three

  1659. and the final verses

  1660. of Habakkuk chapter three

  1661. are this incredible prayer

  1662. where Habakkuk says

1663. God even if the fig tree fails

  1664. if the vines produce

  1665. no harvest

  1666. if the storehouses

  1667. are empty

1668. if the trees are bare

1669. if the cattle are lost

1670. and everything is going wrong

  1671. in other words

1672. if everything in my life

  1673. is stripped from me

1674. I will still rejoice in you

  1675. I will take joy

1676. in the God of my salvation

1677. and we looked at that passage together

  1678. and that Sunday night

1679. after we looked at that

  1680. I was alone

1681. and I thought to myself

  1682. I don't know if I could say that

  1683. I know that's a bad thing

1684. for a preacher to say

  1685. but

  1686. I thought to myself

  1687. I

  1688. I mean

1689. I want to be able to say that

  1690. but if everything

1691. was stripped from my life

  1692. man

  1693. I get grumpy

  1694. just when like

  1695. a little bit

  1696. gets stripped from me

  1697. never mind everything

1698. but I want to be that person

1699. I want to be able to say

  1700. God I'll trust you

  1701. no matter what

1702. things happen to my family

  1703. I'll trust you

1704. I want to be able to say that

  1705. but I'm not there

  1706. and that Sunday night

  1707. I realized

  1708. you know what

  1709. I need you

  1710. and friends

  1711. you need me

  1712. because the way we

  1713. get the gospel

  1714. deeper into our hearts

  1715. isn't just by living

  1716. individualistic

  1717. isolated lives

1718. we get into a gospel community

  1719. that can wash us

1720. week in and week out

  1721. with the gospel

  1722. and so that song

  1723. when Satan tempts me

  1724. to despair

  1725. and tells me

  1726. of the guilt within

  1727. I need someone else

  1728. I need you

  1729. to lift my eyes

  1730. to see him

1731. who's seated on the throne

  1732. who has dealt with

  1733. all my sin

  1734. I need to be

  1735. washed in the gospel

1736. and so do you and I

  1737. so practically

1738. how do we do that

  1739. well

1740. I'm so glad you asked

  1741. that question

  1742. if you

1743. I want you to grab

  1744. your bulletin

  1745. we are almost done

  1746. grab your bulletin

  1747. and you'll see

1748. as you open it up

1749. on the top left hand corner

1750. we've got an order of service

  1751. we've called it

  1752. the flow of worship

  1753. and you'll see

1754. there are three main parts

1755. to our Sunday worship service

  1756. the first is

  1757. adoring God

  1758. it's where we fix

  1759. our eyes on God

  1760. the second part

  1761. is being renewed

  1762. by the gospel

  1763. and then thirdly

  1764. response and commitment

  1765. and so the way

  1766. we've actually ordered

  1767. our Sunday worship service

  1768. is that we follow

  1769. the gospel narrative

1770. we don't just come to church

1771. and do three nice songs

  1772. and interesting talk

  1773. and then go home

  1774. we actually follow

  1775. the gospel narrative

  1776. we start off by

1777. fixing our eyes on God

  1778. adoring Him

  1779. and so

  1780. the song leaders

  1781. actually choose songs

1782. that start off with us

  1783. fixing our eyes

  1784. on the majesty

1785. and the glory of God

  1786. remember this morning

  1787. we sang

  1788. how great thou art

1789. this is who you are

1790. we sang of the wonder

  1791. of who God is

  1792. and then

  1793. having seen God

1794. we move into a time

  1795. of being

  1796. washed in the gospel

  1797. of acknowledging

  1798. our sinfulness

  1799. and we do that

  1800. through prayer

  1801. we do that

  1802. through communion

  1803. of acknowledging

  1804. the fact that

  1805. we don't have it

  1806. all together

  1807. and then we are

  1808. washed in the hope

  1809. of the gospel

  1810. that despite that

  1811. God loves us

  1812. and we do that

  1813. through listening

  1814. to the sermon

  1815. and listening

  1816. to the scripture reading

  1817. and sometimes

  1818. taking communion

  1819. after the sermon

  1820. and then after that

  1821. we sing response songs

  1822. and then we say

  1823. a benediction

  1824. which sends us out

1825. to go and live out

  1826. the gospel

  1827. into our city

  1828. in the week

  1829. maybe one way

  1830. of saying it

  1831. is that each week

  1832. we gather

  1833. in order to sing

  1834. the gospel

  1835. and preach the gospel

  1836. and hear the gospel

  1837. and pray the gospel

  1838. and see the gospel

  1839. acted out

  1840. in communion

  1841. and so

  1842. one practical thing

  1843. in that regard

  1844. is

  1845. what it means is

  1846. if

  1847. if you do happen

  1848. to come late

  1849. to church

  1850. I know

  1851. that doesn't happen

  1852. in this church

  1853. I'm just saying

1854. the church down the road

  1855. it means that

  1856. if we happen

  1857. to walk in here

  1858. at 1045

  1859. and we come straight

  1860. into a time

  1861. of communion

  1862. and we're acknowledging

  1863. our sin

  1864. we haven't first seen

  1865. the wonder of God

  1866. in a few years

  1867. and so we walk

  1868. straight into the service

  1869. saying yes God

  1870. I'm a sinner

  1871. but it's hard

  1872. to confess sin

  1873. without first having

  1874. seen the majesty

  1875. of God

  1876. and so actually

  1877. the way we order

  1878. our service

  1879. is with intentionality

1880. it takes a gospel flow

  1881. finally

  1882. last point is this

  1883. how do we come

  1884. to church

  1885. how do we actually

  1886. come to church

1887. well I want to just

  1888. tell us two

  1889. brief things

  1890. first thing is this

  1891. come to church

  1892. with your heart

  1893. prepared

1894. I know that in Hong Kong

  1895. culturally

1896. Sundays is a little bit

  1897. of a lazy day

  1898. right

  1899. it's the one day

  1900. of the week

  1901. some people get

  1902. to sleep in

  1903. traditionally people

  1904. go for breakfast

  1905. with families

  1906. and Sunday mornings

  1907. and I understand this

1908. and so it's really easy

1909. for us just to kind of

  1910. roll into church

  1911. like we

  1912. half on holiday

  1913. but I want to

  1914. encourage us

  1915. not to do that

  1916. and the reason is

  1917. because we're coming

  1918. to encounter

  1919. the living God

1920. and so the best way

  1921. to do that

  1922. is actually to prepare

  1923. our hearts

  1924. to meet with God

  1925. you know

  1926. imagine you

  1927. invited by some

  1928. world dignitary

  1929. the queen of England

  1930. or some

  1931. president of a country

  1932. to meet with them

  1933. if that was me

  1934. friends

  1935. we probably wouldn't

  1936. roll into

  1937. Buckingham Palace

  1938. you know

  1939. a little bit late

  1940. sleep in our eyes

  1941. yawning

  1942. yo queen

  1943. sorry

  1944. just excuse me

  1945. I'm just getting

  1946. ready

  1947. if that was me

  1948. I would get there

  1949. early

  1950. I'd be ready

  1951. I'd be prepared

  1952. I would be thinking

  1953. about what I'm going

  1954. to say

  1955. friends

  1956. every Sunday

  1957. we come to

  1958. encounter the king

  1959. of the universe

  1960. the glorious

  1961. majestic God

  1962. and the best way

  1963. to come is our

  1964. hearts prepared

1965. and one of the best

  1966. ways to do that

  1967. is to actually

  1968. spend time on Sunday

  1969. morning

  1970. in the scriptures

  1971. and in prayer

  1972. when I was younger

  1973. I used to think

1974. Sunday is the one day

  1975. I don't need to have

  1976. a devotional

  1977. got like an hour

  1978. devotional here

  1979. right

  1980. but actually

  1981. I know somebody

  1982. that every Sunday

  1983. wakes up

  1984. and just spends

  1985. a few minutes

  1986. praying through the

  1987. Psalms

  1988. just one or two

  1989. Psalms

  1990. it's not deep

  1991. Bible study

  1992. it's not in depth

  1993. study

  1994. but it's preparing

  1995. our hearts

  1996. that when we come

  1997. to church

  1998. we're ready to

  1999. encounter God

  2000. from the get go

  2001. come with an

  2002. expectation

  2003. here's another

  2004. practical thing

  2005. as you come

  2006. down the ramp

  2007. into Ebenezer

  2008. as you leave

  2009. Pocfulum Road

  2010. whether you're

  2011. walking down the

  2012. ramp or you're

  2013. driving

  2014. just pray a prayer

  2015. say God

  2016. I need you today

  2017. I'm coming to

  2018. meet with you

  2019. God come and

  2020. wash me in the

  2021. gospel today

  2022. I pray I need you

  2023. really practical

  2024. way

  2025. here's a second

  2026. practical thing

  2027. so first thing

  2028. is come to church

  2029. with your heart

  2030. prepared

  2031. secondly

  2032. come to Sunday

  2033. worship

  2034. ready to encourage

  2035. and serve

  2036. remember how our

  2037. passage

  2038. it says this

  2039. because of the

  2040. richness of the

  2041. gospel

  2042. let us consider

  2043. how to stir up

  2044. one another

  2045. to love and good

  2046. deeds

  2047. not neglecting

  2048. to meet together

  2049. but rather

  2050. encouraging one

  2051. another

  2052. one of the

  2053. greatest things

  2054. that you can do

  2055. for your fellow

  2056. brother and sister

  2057. is to come to

  2058. church

  2059. ready to bless

  2060. them and love

  2061. them and serve

  2062. them

  2063. Colin Marshall

  2064. is an Australian

  2065. writer and he

  2066. writes this

  2067. he says

  2068. church

  2069. is a gathering

  2070. of God's people

  2071. to hear his

  2072. word and respond

  2073. in faith and

  2074. obedience

  2075. in this

  2076. gathering

  2077. we are a

  2078. fellowship

  2079. with each

  2080. other

  2081. through the

  2082. blood of

  2083. Jesus

  2084. and because

  2085. of our

  2086. fellowship

  2087. we seek

  2088. to serve

  2089. each other

  2090. we use

  2091. our gifts

  2092. and our

  2093. abilities

  2094. to strengthen

  2095. one another

  2096. and to build

  2097. Christ's

  2098. church

  2099. all believers

  2100. are involved

  2101. in building

  2102. the church

  2103. not just

  2104. the leaders

  2105. the new

  2106. testament

  2107. consistently

  2108. teaches

  2109. that in

  2110. the growth

  2111. of the body

  2112. of Christ

  2113. each part

  2114. must do

  2115. its work

  2116. because

  2117. of this

  2118. we aren't

  2119. to see

  2120. ourselves

  2121. merely as

  2122. a part

  2123. of an

  2124. organization

  2125. called

  2126. Watermark

  2127. Community

  2128. Church

  2129. but as

  2130. servants

  2131. of God's

  2132. people

  2133. eager to

  2134. meet the

  2135. needs

  2136. of others

  2137. even if

  2138. it means

  2139. sacrificing

  2140. our own

  2141. in many

  2142. ways

  2143. because

  2144. we're

  2145. part of

  2146. a family

  2147. I know

  2148. that most

  2149. of us

  2150. and actually

  2151. Watermark

  2152. is probably

  2153. one of the

  2154. best churches

  2155. I've ever

  2156. encountered

  2157. in terms of

  2158. numbers of

  2159. people serving

  2160. it's incredible

  2161. I think almost

  2162. everyone is

  2163. serving

  2164. but sometimes

  2165. we can think

  2166. that serving

  2167. means just

  2168. joining the

  2169. sound team

  2170. or joining

  2171. kids ministry

  2172. or the

  2173. pack up team

  2174. and those

  2175. things are good

  2176. but I want to

  2177. encourage us

  2178. that serving

  2179. means more

  2180. than just being

  2181. part of a

  2182. roster

  2183. or a

  2184. volunteer team

  2185. it actually

  2186. just means

  2187. showing up

  2188. and so I

  2189. want to

  2190. encourage you

  2191. every Sunday

  2192. come to

  2193. church

  2194. with this

  2195. attitude

  2196. today I'm

  2197. going to

  2198. bless

  2199. and strengthen

  2200. and encourage

  2201. someone

  2202. today I'm

  2203. going to

  2204. pray for

  2205. someone

  2206. today I'm

  2207. going to

  2208. help point

  2209. someone's

  2210. eyes to

  2211. Jesus

  2212. and wash

  2213. someone

  2214. in the

  2215. gospel

  2216. and so all

  2217. that requires

  2218. that we come

  2219. to church

  2220. ready

  2221. prepared

  2222. early

  2223. ready to

  2224. meet God

  2225. and encourage

  2226. each other

  2227. as we come

  2228. to a close

  2229. let me

  2230. close with

  2231. this

  2232. the final

  2233. section

  2234. Hebrews

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  2235. chapter 10

  2236. we're not

  2237. going to

  2238. look at it

  2239. too much

  2240. but the

  2241. author goes

  2242. on to

  2243. say

  2244. he says

  2245. believers

  2246. don't you

  2247. realize that

  2248. as followers

  2249. of Jesus

  2250. it's almost

  2251. definite that

  2252. you're going to

  2253. encounter suffering

  2254. and persecution

  2255. and he says

  2256. remember the time

  2257. when you first

  2258. trusted in Jesus

  2259. you had your

  2260. property taken

  2261. away from you

  2262. and you

  2263. joyfully

  2264. accepted it

  2265. because you

  2266. realized you

  2267. had a better

  2268. inheritance

  2269. one that can

  2270. never be taken

  2271. from you

  2272. inheritance

  2273. in Christ

  2274. friends in this

  2275. city and in

  2276. our lifetime

  2277. there are going

  2278. to be troubles

  2279. and there are

  2280. going to be

  2281. reasons to

  2282. lose hope

  2283. there's going

  2284. to be

  2285. challenges

  2286. there's going

  2287. to be

  2288. suffering

  2289. there may

  2290. even be

  2291. persecution

  2292. friends what

  2293. you and I

  2294. don't need

  2295. is a

  2296. motivational

  2297. talk

  2298. what we

  2299. don't need

  2300. is a

  2301. pep talk

  2302. an inspiration

  2303. telling us

  2304. to be

  2305. nicer people

  2306. friends when

  2307. the furnace

  2308. of life

  2309. comes when

  2310. the storms

  2311. of life

  2312. come or

  2313. when abundance

  2314. and prosperity

  2315. comes what

  2316. you and I

  2317. need to know

  2318. is that the

  2319. God of heaven

  2320. is in control

  2321. of all things

  2322. and he has

  2323. our lives

  2324. in our hands

  2325. and that he

  2326. loves us

  2327. and he's for

  2328. us because

  2329. Jesus died

  2330. on the cross

  2331. for us

  2332. friends we need

  2333. to be humbled

  2334. by his awesomeness

  2335. and built up

  2336. in his love

  2337. we need to be

  2338. washed again

  2339. and again

  2340. and again

  2341. in the good

  2342. news of the

  2343. gospel

  2344. and that's

  2345. why we gather

  2346. on Sundays

  2347. let's pray

  2348. together

  2349. I want to

  2350. invite the band

  2351. up and

  2352. let me pray

  2353. for us

  2354. and then

  2355. I'll invite

  2356. anyone that

  2357. particularly

  2358. wants prayer

  2359. to come

  2360. and join

  2361. us

  2362. heavenly

  2363. father

  2364. we confess

  2365. god

  2366. that

  2367. the gospel

  2368. leaks from

  2369. our hearts

  2370. father we

  2371. confess there

  2372. are moments

  2373. when we are

  2374. so in awe

  2375. of you

  2376. and so

  2377. astounded

  2378. by you

  2379. that we

  2380. say things

  2381. like god

  2382. I'll do

  2383. anything

  2384. for you

  2385. I'll go

  2386. anywhere you

  2387. want

  2388. god you

  2389. have my

  2390. life

  2391. and yet

  2392. just a

  2393. couple of

  2394. days and

  2395. weeks later

  2396. god we

  2397. find ourselves

  2398. so consumed

  2399. with ourself

  2400. and our own

  2401. agendas

  2402. father we

  2403. need you

  2404. we find

  2405. ourselves

  2406. from time

  2407. to time

  2408. overwhelmed

  2409. god

  2410. by the

  2411. hopelessness

  2412. that seems

  2413. to pervade

  2414. us

  2415. father lift

  2416. our eyes

  2417. again we

  2418. pray

  2419. god as we

  2420. come to

  2421. you as

  2422. we draw

  2423. near to

  2424. you as

  2425. we sing

  2426. these songs

  2427. of worship

  2428. and adoration

  2429. god open

  2430. the eyes

  2431. of our

  2432. hearts

  2433. to see

  2434. you

  2435. open our

  2436. eyes to

  2437. see where

  2438. our true

  2439. hope lies

  2440. christ come

  2441. and wash

  2442. us in your

  2443. love we

  2444. pray

  2445. come and

  2446. humble us

  2447. with your

  2448. majesty

  2449. and build

  2450. us up in

  2451. your love

  2452. we pray

  2453. christ come

  2454. and have

  2455. your way

  2456. amen

  2457. doing

  2458. you

  2459. you

  2460. you

  2461. you

  2462. you

  2463. you
