  1. Father, we ask that you just pour out the Holy Spirit deeply upon us,

  2. that you might bring these words to our heart.

  3. And Father, you know our real hearts, not the imaginary hearts that we think we have,

  4. not the imaginary or fake hearts and fronts that we present to other people.

  5. Father, you know those things within us that we're afraid of.

  6. You know those things that we desire strongly, even lust after.

  7. Father, you know what's really going on inside each one of us.

  8. And so, Father, we thank you that you see the real me, the real each one of us,

  9. and that you love the real me, the real each one of who we are.

  10. And you pour out the Holy Spirit upon who we really are and minister to us as we really are.

  11. So, Father, we thank you for this, and we ask that your Holy Spirit would come with power.

  12. And all these things we ask in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  13. Please be seated.

  14. So, speaking of what we're really like and what goes on in our hearts,

  15. I have a bit of a confession to make to you.

  16. So, no surprise, I'm working on my sermon in a coffee shop,

  17. and it's a coffee shop in Centertown on Friday morning.

  18. I was there for a while working.

  19. And at around 1230, I'm walking down Bank Street in Centertown towards the office

  20. and towards the first one of my afternoon meetings.

  21. And my heart was really heavy, actually, as I was walking,

  22. because I thought to myself, we're going to be looking at John chapter 16,

    John 16 chapter mention

  23. I thought to myself, like, what on earth, like, why would any non-Christian come to hear about this?

  24. I'm just being honest.

  25. Like, why would any non-Christian want to come and spend some time looking at John 16?

  26. You know, I invite people to come to the church, and I think to myself,

  27. what if a couple of them came today?

  28. And we're looking at John 16.

  29. And they'd probably just shake their head, like, there's nothing in there.

  30. I mean, it might be interesting if you're a Christian,

  31. but there doesn't seem to be anything like that in me.

  32. And it was really weighing on my heart that that's sort of how I was thinking about the text.

  33. And I guess indirectly, I'm complaining to God as well, right?

  34. True confession.

  35. And so, you know, in heaven, I'll find out that around 12.30 on Friday,

  36. one of you were praying for me, that it didn't come from me.

  37. But I felt this thing, well, I need to pray about that.

  38. I need to not only complain about this.

  39. I need to not complain about it to myself, but just say it to God.

  40. Like, God, like, what on earth am I supposed to do with this type of text?

  41. Like, I could preach it to Christians, and I could give a lecture on it,

  42. but what on earth am I supposed to say?

  43. Like, why on earth would a non-Christian want to hear this text?

  44. And I start to pray this as I'm walking down Bank Street, you know,

  45. on a Friday afternoon in Centre Town in Ottawa.

  46. And one of the very first things that came into my mind was it's as if God almost rebuked me,

  47. but in a gentle way.

  48. And he said, George, what do you mean that there's nothing in this text that connects to non-Christians?

  49. And then I start to remember what's in the text.

  50. And in the text, it talks about being excluded from important social institutions.

  51. And I'm thinking to myself, good grief, we have the Me Too movement, the Black Lives Matter movement.

  52. We have all sorts of people in Canada complaining in the First Nations about the demotion of the attorney,

  53. you know, the, oh, what's her name now?

  54. It's gone from me.

  55. You know who I mean.

  56. Her being demoted and put into Veterans Affairs.

  57. And here this text is going to talk about exclusion from important social institutions.

  58. The text is going to talk about religiously motivated and justified killing.

  59. And you can hardly read a paper for a week without seeing about that there's something going on somewhere in the world

  60. and even in North America where people are killing their kids for honor reasons and shame.

  61. And the text talks about sorrow and it talks about right and wrong.

  62. And it talks about self-justification.

  63. And it talks about how people judge things.

  64. And it talks about the importance of truth and the importance of lies.

  65. And it talks about weeping.

  66. And it talks about lamenting.

  67. And it talks about joy.

  68. And it talks about childbirth.

  69. And it talks about anguish.

  70. And it talks about rejoicing.

  71. And it talks about love.

  72. And it talks about hiding and being scattered.

  73. and it talks about peace

  74. and it talks about politically expedient murder

  75. and political show trials

  76. and all these things start to go through my head

  77. and I think to myself,

  78. well, God, I guess you're right.

  79. Like maybe this text does touch the real world.

  80. I mean, that's all in John 16.

  81. Everything I just said is in John 16.

  82. Like I didn't add something.

  83. So then I start to puzzle over the text

  84. and what on earth I'm going to say.

  85. And I, you know, sometimes when you watch movies

  86. about the, you know, like Star Wars or Star Trek,

  87. you'll see aliens with four arms.

  88. So I'm going to do four on other hands.

  89. You have to be an alien to do all four of the other hands

  90. because there's going to be four on other hands.

  91. You see, on one hand,

  92. this text really does talk about

  93. the world that we actually live in all the time,

  94. even in Canada,

  95. which we might think is one of the best countries in the world.

  96. We might say that we're way better

  97. than the Democratic Republic of Congo

  98. or some other place.

  99. But the fact of the matter is,

  100. is that, I mean, we're better in some ways economically,

  101. but there's all sorts of other things

  102. about our country that's wrong.

  103. And this Bible text is actually talking about

  104. all sorts of really important things.

  105. On the other hand, you could say that the problem

  106. that, like, people have are that,

  107. like, if there's some non-Christians

  108. who've come for a variety of reasons,

  109. maybe because you're on a spiritual quest,

  110. maybe because it's an assignment at school,

  111. maybe because you were dragged here,

  112. you know, whatever.

  113. On the other hand, it could seem like this is,

  114. like, not a good text to talk about the real world

  115. because in some ways it sounds a little bit about,

  116. like, a horror movie

  117. because it's going to talk about a world

  118. where there's a devil and the devil is described

  119. as the ruler of this world.

  120. And that sounds a little bit like a horror movie.

  121. You know, on the other hand,

  122. like, with that still hand,

  123. I'm still on that hand.

  124. And on that hand,

  125. horror movies are really popular

  126. and lots of people, in fact,

  127. believe that demons exist.

  128. It's not unusual to see people

  129. in coffee shops and others

  130. that wear talismans

  131. to repel evil spirits.

  132. So, in fact,

  133. a text about the reality of the devil,

  134. it might exclude some people,

  135. but for other people,

  136. it's talking about something

  137. that, in fact,

  138. matches their experience and their fears.

  139. On the other hand, though,

  140. it sounds a little bit like

  141. the world of those

  142. religious fundamentalist crazies

  143. that are so politically incorrect

  144. that all the way through the text,

  145. it talks about God as Father.

  146. And, George,

  147. don't you know that

  148. I've had an abusive father

  149. or somebody else might say,

  150. I've spent my whole life

  151. trying to get under the foot

  152. of my dad,

  153. get his voice out of my head

  154. because he was such a bad dad.

  155. And, George,

  156. why are you so stuck

  157. on using a text

  158. that talks about God as Father?

  159. That just sounds like

  160. the worst type of religious fundamentalism.

  161. And on the other hand,

  162. well, actually,

  163. if you could put up

  164. the first point, Andrew,

  165. and the first point

  166. is just the last verse

  167. in chapter 16,

  168. verse 33.

  169. If we're honest,

  170. a text like this

  171. sounds like something

  172. a crazy person would say,

  173. right?

  174. Just before I,

  175. well, in fact,

  176. I'll read it right now.

  177. What the text says,

  178. and I've used it

  179. at the net version

  180. of the Bible,

  181. which is a really good version

  182. of the Bible, by the way,

  183. I have told you these things

  184. so that in me

  185. you may have peace

  186. in the world.

  187. You have trouble

  188. and suffering,

  189. but take courage.

  190. Take courage.

  191. I am victorious

  192. over the world.

  193. It's Jesus speaking.

  194. I have told you

  195. these things

  196. so that in me

  197. you may have peace

  198. in the world.

  199. You have trouble

  200. and suffering,

  201. but take courage.

  202. I am victorious

  203. over the world.

  204. And right in the context

  205. of the book

  206. and this book

  207. is written by an eyewitness

  208. and he wrote the book

  209. while lots of eyewitnesses

  210. and earwitnesses

  211. of Jesus

  212. were still alive

  213. and they could have said,

  214. no, no, no, no, no, no,

  215. that's not what he said.

  216. This book is written

  217. by an eyewitness

  218. and

  219. and Jesus

  220. says this

  221. just before he's captured,

  222. just before

  223. all of his disciples

  224. run away,

  225. just before

  226. he is unjustly

  227. accused

  228. and just before

  229. he's unjustly

  230. condemned as guilty

  231. and just before

  232. he is

  233. declared to be guilty

  234. purely and utterly

  235. for reasons

  236. of political expediency

  237. because the Roman ruler

  238. knew that he was innocent

  239. and he's

  240. found guilty

  241. purely and utterly

  242. to score political points

  243. and just before

  244. he's whipped

  245. and beaten

  246. and just before

  247. he's crucified

  248. and just before

  249. he dies

  250. he says

  251. he says

  252. I have told you

  253. these things

  254. so that in me

  255. you may have peace

  256. in the world

  257. you have trouble

  258. and suffering

  259. but take courage

  260. I am victorious

  261. over the world.

  262. and if we are

  263. honest

  264. this is complete

  265. and utter

  266. crazy talk

  267. but here's the problem

  268. with this

  269. nothing about

  270. if you read

  271. the biography

  272. of Jesus

  273. and you read

  274. any one of the four

  275. ancient biographies

  276. of Jesus

  277. at no point in time

  278. does he actually

  279. come across

  280. as crazy.

  281. I mean we all

  282. know crazy

  283. right?

  284. I mean you're in a church

  285. in downtown Ottawa

  286. just go for a walk

  287. down Rito Street

  288. you will meet

  289. all sorts of crazy people

  290. and some of you

  291. have been in move-in

  292. and you live

  293. right amongst crazy people

  294. and some of us

  295. struggle with mental illness

  296. and I'm not saying this

  297. to stigmatize mental illness

  298. but you know

  299. we have face-to-face

  300. or maybe even

  301. family relations

  302. with people

  303. who go off their meds

  304. and they talk

  305. like crazy people

  306. but Jesus

  307. is not

  308. there's

  309. you just can't

  310. there's this huge

  311. disconnect

  312. between crazy talk

  313. like this

  314. and the fact

  315. that there's nothing

  316. else about the way

  317. he speaks

  318. that makes him

  319. seem like he's crazy

  320. there's this profound

  321. disconnect

  322. to which

  323. you know I say

  324. the only reason

  325. any of us

  326. would be reading

  327. these biographies

  328. about Jesus

  329. is because the resurrection

  330. changes everything

  331. like the resurrection

  332. changes everything

  333. the death of Jesus

  334. on one hand

  335. we know from a spiritual

  336. perspective

  337. changes everything

  338. but from a worldly

  339. perspective

  340. the Romans

  341. crucified

  342. I don't know

  343. 100,000 people

  344. they crucified

  345. tens of thousands

  346. of people

  347. there'd be no real

  348. interest in reading

  349. a biography

  350. of somebody

  351. who ends up

  352. being falsely accused

  353. and crucified

  354. but the resurrection

  355. changes everything

  356. if the resurrection

  357. actually happened

  358. and there really

  359. is good evidence

  360. for it

  361. like there really

  362. is good evidence

  363. for it

  364. if the resurrection

  365. happened

  366. then that means

  367. that most Canadians

  368. think they live

  369. in the real world

  370. but they don't

  371. and I'm not saying

  372. that to insult

  373. anybody

  374. like most Canadians

  375. it's funny

  376. on one hand

  377. we think we live

  378. in the real world

  379. yet a lot of what we

  380. think of as the real world

  381. we get from watching

  382. movies and videos

  383. I

  384. just the other day

  385. I finished a novel

  386. by a Greek American

  387. I'm going to pronounce

  388. his name incorrectly

  389. Pelicanos

  390. something like that

  391. he's written a lot of novels

  392. and he's done some very

  393. good work

  394. in the medium

  395. of TV

  396. and shows

  397. and I said to my wife

  398. after I'd read about

  399. a third of the book

  400. I said

  401. this guy's the most

  402. amazing writer

  403. in the world

  404. for one particular thing

  405. you know what's so shocking

  406. about him

  407. people go to church

  408. in his book

  409. like just think about that

  410. if you watch

  411. most American things

  412. you would not think

  413. anybody in North America

  414. goes to church

  415. that nobody in North America

  416. reads the Bible

  417. that nobody in North America

  418. prays

  419. but that's just wrong

  420. and I'm reading this book

  421. and it's filled

  422. like it has

  423. you know

  424. it has cross dressers

  425. it has thieves

  426. it has hoodlums

  427. it has gay people

  428. and it has people

  429. who go to church

  430. and people who read

  431. the Bible

  432. and people who pray

  433. and I said to Louise

  434. like this is the first novel

  435. I've read in five years

  436. that actually describes

  437. the real world

  438. like what America's

  439. actually like

  440. you know

  441. including the drug dealer

  442. who goes to church

  443. on Sunday

  444. you know

  445. I mean it's just

  446. it's the real world

  447. and most of us

  448. think we're living

  449. in the real world

  450. but we don't

  451. if the resurrection

  452. actually happened

  453. in 2004

  454. some of you have heard

  455. a version of this story

  456. before

  457. it's a true story

  458. 2004

  459. there was this couple

  460. and they decided

  461. at the

  462. I think it was like

  463. the second week of August

  464. that they wanted

  465. to go see a movie

  466. and that summer

  467. there were two movies

  468. there was a movie

  469. that came out in July

  470. I think

  471. I hope I have this

  472. the order right

  473. and the movie

  474. that had come out

  475. in July

  476. was Will Smith

  477. the movie starring

  478. Will Smith

  479. called iRobot

  480. did like 350 million dollars

  481. worth of business

  482. or something like that

  483. iRobot

  484. and then in early August

  485. a movie starring

  486. Tom Cruise

  487. came out

  488. called Collateral

  489. very good movie

  490. if you like those types

  491. of movies

  492. Tom Cruise plays

  493. a bad guy

  494. who sort of gets

  495. a cab driver

  496. to drive him around

  497. while he kills people

  498. not the cab driver

  499. Tom Cruise

  500. murders people

  501. while the cab driver

  502. drives him around

  503. and so this couple

  504. true story

  505. this couple

  506. they're going to the

  507. movie theater

  508. and the guy

  509. says to the girl

  510. like which movie

  511. would you like to see

  512. and she says

  513. I'd like to see

  514. both of them

  515. but you know

  516. I'd rather see

  517. the Tom Cruise movie

  518. but I'll see

  519. either of them

  520. so she's not really

  521. paying any attention

  522. the guy pays

  523. the tickets

  524. they go into the movie

  525. and halfway

  526. through the movie

  527. she leans over

  528. to her boyfriend

  529. and says

  530. this is a really weird

  531. Tom Cruise movie

  532. like when's he

  533. going to show up

  534. and he leans

  535. back to her

  536. and said

  537. we're watching

  538. iRobot

  539. with Will Smith

  540. we're watching

  541. iRobot

  542. with Will Smith

  543. she spent

  544. half the movie

  545. thinking it was

  546. a Tom Cruise movie

  547. wondering why

  548. nothing made sense

  549. because iRobot

  550. said in the future

  551. with robots

  552. that try to take

  553. over the world

  554. and the Tom Cruise movie

  555. is said

  556. I think it's in LA

  557. in modern times

  558. and you know

  559. the fact of the matter

  560. is

  561. is that one of the reasons

  562. that the world

  563. doesn't make sense

  564. to most Canadians

  565. where they take refuge

  566. in the manufactured

  567. real world

  568. of Hollywood

  569. is they think

  570. they're in one movie

  571. but it's actually

  572. a different movie

  573. and we can only say

  574. that if the resurrection

  575. actually happened

  576. if Jesus really did

  577. rise from the dead

  578. then what Jesus

  579. is doing here

  580. when he speaks

  581. is reminding us

  582. you and I

  583. who spend our whole week

  584. we read the newspapers

  585. well I mean

  586. maybe one or two of us

  587. newspapers are these things

  588. made out of paper

  589. that they used to read

  590. like a hundred years ago

  591. but

  592. where you look at

  593. newspapers online

  594. and YouTube

  595. and Netflix

  596. and movies

  597. and TV

  598. and all that

  599. and we live that

  600. whole week

  601. and one of the reasons

  602. that church is so important

  603. is that we come together

  604. to be reminded

  605. about what the real world is

  606. that's actually

  607. what church should be

  608. is where we

  609. are reminded

  610. oh yes

  611. in the real world

  612. in the real world

  613. in the real world

  614. not the world

  615. of Globe and Mail

  616. editorials

  617. and CBC News

  618. but in the real world

  619. there is a God

  620. who does exist

  621. in the real world

  622. that God

  623. has revealed himself

  624. through the scriptures

  625. but preeminently

  626. he has revealed himself

  627. in the person

  628. of his son

  629. in the real world

  630. he has revealed himself

  631. most fully

  632. by dying on a cross

  633. and it is precisely

  634. by his death

  635. upon the cross

  636. and his resurrection

  637. that the glory

  638. of God

  639. and the love of God

  640. is most fully

  641. and perfectly revealed

  642. and that's the real world

  643. and the wonderful thing

  644. about this text

  645. because what's going to happen

  646. immediately after this

  647. we will look at this

  648. over the next couple

  649. of weeks

  650. is that we

  651. over

  652. John

  653. records for us

  654. how Jesus

  655. prays

  656. not only over

  657. the disciples

  658. that are in front of him

  659. but how he prays

  660. over you and me

  661. and he prays

  662. a prayer of consecration

  663. over us

  664. but what we're

  665. hearing here

  666. from Jesus

  667. and what we see

  668. in this quote

  669. is that if Jesus

  670. really did

  671. die upon the cross

  672. and he really did

  673. rise from the dead

  674. then the justice

  675. of this world

  676. is judged

  677. and the religion

  678. of this world

  679. is judged

  680. and the spirituality

  681. of this world

  682. is judged

  683. and we human beings

  684. are judged

  685. and for a brief moment

  686. we are reminded

  687. of the reality

  688. of the fact

  689. that every single person

  690. will die

  691. and death

  692. appears to win

  693. and in this text

  694. it is not about

  695. how great

  696. and glorious

  697. we are

  698. but it is

  699. that Jesus

  700. has conquered

  701. all of the injustice

  702. all of the false religion

  703. all of the lies

  704. and he has conquered

  705. death itself

  706. and he reaches

  707. across eternity

  708. to human beings

  709. ordinary human beings

  710. like you and me

  711. and says

  712. that if you put

  713. your faith

  714. and trust in me

  715. you will share

  716. in my victory

  717. you

  718. ordinary people

  719. like you and me

  720. will share

  721. in my victory

  722. just before we start

  723. to read this text

  724. because we are actually

  725. going to read it

  726. because it's

  727. at the end of the day

  728. all I'm doing

  729. is helping us

  730. to understand

  731. the text

  732. but it's more important

  733. that you remember

  734. the text

  735. than you remember

  736. what I said

  737. because the text

  738. is God's word

  739. my words are my words

  740. just one other thing

  741. about the text

  742. which makes it very hard

  743. for us to understand

  744. even when we look

  745. at this text

  746. you know I have told

  747. you these things

  748. so that in me

  749. in me

  750. you may have peace

  751. in the world

  752. you have trouble

  753. and suffering

  754. but take courage

  755. what does that

  756. take courage

  757. I am victorious

  758. over the world

  759. part of the problem

  760. we have with reading

  761. the text

  762. when we read it

  763. is that we

  764. all week

  765. we have two different

  766. basic songs

  767. playing in our heads

  768. and partially

  769. it will connect

  770. to political differences

  771. amongst us

  772. by the way

  773. those of us

  774. more on the left

  775. our favorite song

  776. is we shall overcome

  777. we shall overcome

  778. we shall overcome

  779. someday

  780. with the emphasis

  781. on we

  782. and those of us

  783. who are more

  784. on the right

  785. we sing

  786. I shall overcome

  787. I shall overcome

  788. I shall overcome

  789. someday

  790. but those are

  791. sort of the two

  792. basic narratives

  793. that we or I

  794. will overcome

  795. it's viewed as

  796. immature

  797. to have somebody

  798. else overcome

  799. for you

  800. we all sort of

  801. understand that

  802. there's some times

  803. in our life

  804. when things are

  805. just completely

  806. and utterly chaotic

  807. and terrible

  808. in our life

  809. and we just want

  810. somebody to come

  811. and rescue us

  812. but once we're rescued

  813. we want to be able

  814. to go back to singing

  815. we shall overcome

  816. or I shall overcome

  817. because that's the song

  818. of the world

  819. and it's immature

  820. to live your life

  821. as if somebody else

  822. will overcome

  823. but you see

  824. the problem with this text

  825. is once again

  826. this text is talking

  827. about the real world

  828. the real world

  829. where people die

  830. the real world

  831. where people have

  832. trouble and sorrow

  833. the real world

  834. where there is injustice

  835. the real world

  836. that we actually live in

  837. and at the heart

  838. of this real world

  839. entering into the real world

  840. is learning to sing

  841. a very different

  842. type of song

  843. worthy is the lamb

  844. that was slain

  845. worthy is the lamb

  846. that conquered the grave

  847. worthy

  848. worthy

  849. worthy

  850. worthy is the lamb

  851. that was slain

  852. to receive power

  853. and wealth

  854. and riches

  855. and glory

  856. he is the one

  857. who's conquered

  858. he is victorious

  859. and my victory

  860. comes not in being

  861. who I am

  862. but in who he is

  863. and having my hand

  864. in the hand

  865. of the one

  866. who is victorious

  867. and so it is

  868. that I learn

  869. some other song

  870. I surrender all

  871. I surrender all

  872. all for thee

  873. my precious savior

  874. I surrender

  875. all

  876. and the funny thing

  877. about this text

  878. as we're now

  879. about to read it

  880. is that

  881. when we actually

  882. the thing about Jesus

  883. is that as we listen

  884. to this

  885. the text

  886. the text is all

  887. talking about

  888. how Jesus

  889. is the savior

  890. but

  891. and we're to trust

  892. in him

  893. that our peace

  894. and our courage

  895. comes in him

  896. but if you look

  897. at the text

  898. again

  899. it's when we

  900. acknowledge

  901. that he is

  902. victorious

  903. over the world

  904. that he wants us

  905. to have courage

  906. to face life

  907. he wants us

  908. to have courage

  909. to face education

  910. he wants us

  911. to have courage

  912. to face our debts

  913. he wants us

  914. to have courage

  915. to face our problems

  916. he wants us

  917. to have courage

  918. to face

  919. those huge things

  920. that we have to face

  921. in our lives

  922. it's

  923. this funny

  924. funny thing is

  925. and it's not funny

  926. because it's the real world

  927. because in the real world, I'm a creature and God is God.

  928. And God is the one who's created all things.

  929. And God is not a distant God off snoring or in the bathroom

  930. or doing something different while the world moves on.

  931. But in the real world, God is active and present and hidden

  932. and moving towards its end.

  933. And he takes human beings like you and me,

  934. ordinary, fallen, fallible, dying human beings like you and me.

  935. And he makes us his children

  936. and he helps us to share in the victory of Jesus.

  937. And as we listen to the words of Jesus,

  938. it's all about how you go and how you do

  939. and how you go and how you do.

  940. You see, it's this very odd truth.

  941. It isn't that the Bible teaches us

  942. that we should always be bowing to other people

  943. as if we shouldn't be doormats

  944. and everybody else has to be taller than us.

  945. It's this profound, continual spiritual truth

  946. that when we bow to Jesus,

  947. we are taller in our day-to-day lives,

  948. but not taller in a way that will mean that we oppress,

  949. but that we bless.

  950. Taller in a way that means

  951. that we don't bow down to evil or to lies,

  952. but we stand straight and speak truth to the lie.

  953. Because that's how Jesus saves us to be,

  954. to be more fully human.

  955. So let's look very briefly at the text.

  956. Turn in your Bibles to John chapter 16.

    John 16 chapter mention

  957. John chapter 16.

    John 16 chapter mention

  958. And here's how the text begins.

  959. Remember, he's been talking for chapter 13, 14, 15.

  960. He's talked about a variety of things.

  961. 13, about how he cleans them

  962. and the shock about the fact that they're going to die,

  963. that one of them has betrayed him.

  964. He shocks them by saying he's going to leave

  965. and they can't go where he's going.

  966. He shocks them by saying Peter's going to betray him.

  967. In chapter 14, he primarily talks about

  968. comforting his disciples because of that bad news.

  969. John 15, he talks about understanding

  970. what it means to be in union with him

  971. and how out of union with him,

  972. we have the basis to have communion with him

  973. and that fruit will flow into our lives.

  974. And now he continues to teach and exhort us to move forward.

  975. And here's how he begins verse one.

  976. I have said all these things to you

  977. to keep you from falling away.

  978. They will put you out of the synagogues.

  979. Indeed, the hour is coming

  980. when whoever kills you will think

  981. he is offering service to God.

  982. And they will do these things

  983. because they have not known the Father nor me.

  984. But I have said these things to you

  985. that when their hour comes,

  986. you remember,

  987. you may remember that I told them to you.

  988. Now just sort of pause.

  989. It begins with a very stark motive.

  990. And you can already see it.

  991. Remember I said how it talks about the real world,

  992. the real world of religiously motivated killing.

  993. This is the real world, folks.

  994. This is the real world.

  995. Religiously motivated violence and extremism

  996. which the Bible here,

  997. Jesus condemns unequivocally.

  998. Anybody who does that

  999. doesn't know the Father or me.

  1000. Period.

  1001. Exclamation mark.

  1002. No happy face.

  1003. Period and exclamation.

1004. Now here's one more thing.

  1005. And in some ways,

1006. I'm going to give you,

1007. I'm going to bring out seven,

  1008. just very, very brief.

1009. I'm just going to read the text.

1010. Basically, the sentence will be self-explanatory.

  1011. But here's the thing

1012. that will start to confuse us a little bit

1013. as we read the text.

  1014. When I was a kid,

  1015. when I was a kid,

  1016. like, I don't know how old I was,

  1017. but when I was a kid,

1018. I loved playing hide and seek.

  1019. And in my neighborhood,

  1020. by coincidence,

  1021. in the houses,

1022. about two or three houses either way,

1023. there happened to be all kids

  1024. roughly my age,

  1025. like within, you know,

1026. in the age of my sister

1027. and my brother and me.

  1028. And on summer nights,

1029. when there was no school the next day,

1030. one of the things that we loved to do

1031. after dark was play hide and seek.

1032. And I think about it now

1033. because we just ran into

  1034. any old neighbor's property.

1035. We had some type of rule

  1036. that you couldn't go,

  1037. like, beyond, you know,

  1038. whatever, you know,

  1039. Zelda's house that way

1040. and you couldn't go beyond,

1041. you know, Friedrich's house that way

  1042. or whatever it was.

  1043. But here it's dark

1044. and we're just running into

  1045. our neighbor's backyards

  1046. and their bushes

1047. and there was never any complaint about it.

  1048. The world was different.

1049. I was just thinking about that

1050. when I was preparing to the sermon.

  1051. That's really weird.

  1052. Anyway, there you go.

1053. It was just a different neighborhood with kids.

  1054. Maybe it was because

1055. it was a Jewish neighborhood,

  1056. all Jewish.

  1057. I was the only,

1058. my family was the only Gentile family

  1059. in our street

1060. and Jewish people love kids.

  1061. I don't know.

1062. Maybe that's the reason why.

1063. I love playing hide and seek.

  1064. And later on,

  1065. when I was a kid,

1066. I'd never heard of the game

  1067. Capture the Flag.

1068. But when my own kids

  1069. were a certain age,

1070. one of the things they loved to play

  1071. was Capture the Flag.

1072. And if we brought other people over

  1073. who had kids

1074. and we had a huge front yard at the time,

1075. we lived just outside of CARP

  1076. in the country

1077. and one of the things they loved to play

  1078. was Capture the Flag.

  1079. Now here's the thing.

  1080. Here's the thing.

1081. If we think we're playing hide and seek

1082. and you're giving people advice

  1083. about how to hide,

  1084. that's one thing.

1085. But if you're playing Capture the Flag,

1086. and those of you who don't know

  1087. what these games are,

1088. you can talk to somebody,

  1089. a younger person,

1090. and they'll tell you what the games are.

1091. But if you're playing Capture the Flag,

1092. it's a very different set of rules.

  1093. You give different encouragements

1094. to play Capture the Flag

1095. rather than playing hide and seek

  1096. where you're always hiding.

  1097. Okay?

1098. And what Jesus is talking about here

  1099. is Capture the Flag,

  1100. not Hide and Seek.

  1101. That's what he's talking about.

  1102. Jesus isn't saying,

  1103. listen to my words,

1104. I'm going to tell you how to hide.

  1105. No.

  1106. Listen to me,

1107. I'm going to tell you

1108. how to capture the flag.

  1109. I renamed the sermon.

1110. The bulletin has one name

  1111. for the sermon.

1112. If you go online later on,

1113. the sermon's name is Capture the Flag.

  1114. And the seventh sermon,

  1115. just little things,

1116. the rest of it will all be very obvious.

1117. It'll be very, very quick.

1118. But Jesus is giving us advice

1119. about how you capture the flag,

  1120. not how to hide.

1121. Could you put up the first point, Andrew?

1122. So all of my points

1123. are going to begin the same way.

  1124. As you go,

  1125. as you go forward,

  1126. always remember.

  1127. As you go forward,

  1128. always remember

  1129. that belonging to Jesus

1130. may cost you your life.

1131. That's what Jesus just said.

  1132. Always remember,

  1133. as you go forward,

  1134. that belonging to Jesus

1135. may cost you your life.

1136. These will all be available online

1137. if you can't get them down now.

  1138. And so,

1139. that's how he continues to go.

  1140. Remember,

  1141. this is all advice

1142. about how to play Capture the Flag,

1143. not about how to hide

1144. when you're playing hide and seek.

  1145. Verse,

  1146. the next part,

  1147. 4b of chapter 16.

1148. I did not say these things

1149. to you from the beginning

1150. because I was with you.

1151. But now I am going to him

  1152. who sent me.

  1153. And in other words,

1154. he's going back to God.

1155. He's going to the Father.

1156. The Father had sent him.

1157. And none of you asks me,

  1158. where are you going?

1159. They did ask him earlier,

1160. but they haven't persisted in asking

1161. because in the Irish expression,

  1162. they've been gobsmacked.

1163. And they're sort of like

1164. the deer in the headlight

1165. and they don't know what to say.

  1166. But,

  1167. verse 6,

1168. but because I have said

  1169. these things to you,

1170. sorrow has filled your heart.

  1171. This is really important.

  1172. Listen to this.

  1173. Nevertheless,

  1174. remember,

  1175. he's telling them

  1176. that he's leaving.

1177. I tell you the truth.

1178. It is to your advantage

  1179. that I go away.

1180. For if I do not go away,

  1181. the helper,

  1182. some of your Bibles

  1183. might say the comforter,

1184. some might say the counselor,

1185. some might say the advocate.

  1186. The Greek word

1187. encompasses all of these ideas.

  1188. Advocate,

  1189. comforter,

  1190. counselor,

  1191. helper.

1192. If I do not go away,

  1193. the helper,

  1194. the Holy Spirit,

1195. will not come to you.

  1196. But if I go,

1197. I will send him to you.

  1198. And when he comes,

1199. he will convict the world

  1200. concerning sin

  1201. and righteousness

  1202. and judgment

  1203. concerning sin

  1204. because they did not

  1205. believe in me.

  1206. I mean,

  1207. that's in a sense

  1208. the solution to sin.

  1209. On one hand,

  1210. the solution to sin

  1211. isn't for me

  1212. to be able to

  1213. successfully show you

  1214. how sinful you are

1215. so you can just feel

  1216. unbelievably miserable

1217. or just stop feeling miserable

1218. and just walk out of the room.

  1219. True story.

  1220. When I was in

1221. the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa

1222. and I was in my rural parish,

1223. there was a guy who got up

  1224. in the pulpit.

1225. He came back from his holidays

1226. and he began to preach

1227. and all he did was tell off

  1228. the whole congregation

1229. about how bad they were.

1230. And about seven minutes in,

  1231. the whole congregation

  1232. got up and left.

1233. He was left at the front

  1234. of the church,

  1235. empty.

1236. They all got up and left.

  1237. In fact,

  1238. in Anglican polity,

  1239. there's things called wardens.

  1240. The wardens

1241. had to get the bishop

  1242. involved

  1243. because the bishop

  1244. had to negotiate

  1245. with the wardens

1246. to get any of the people

1247. to go back to the church.

1248. So I could get them.

  1249. But you know what?

  1250. The solution to sin

1251. isn't for me to say,

  1252. you're terrible,

  1253. you're terrible,

  1254. you're terrible.

  1255. No.

  1256. On one level,

  1257. we all know,

  1258. everybody knows

  1259. we're not perfect.

1260. The thing that we need

  1261. to be convicted of

1262. is the remedy to sin,

  1263. which is Jesus.

  1264. Verse 9,

  1265. concerning sin

  1266. because they do not

  1267. believe in me.

  1268. Concerning righteousness,

  1269. that is,

1270. how things are made right.

  1271. Okay,

1272. how are things made right?

  1273. Well,

1274. because I go to the Father

1275. and you will see me no longer.

  1276. You see,

1277. Jesus' death upon the cross

  1278. and his resurrection,

1279. that's what makes us right

  1280. with God,

1281. with the creator of all things.

1282. That's what makes us right.

1283. We need to be convicted of that.

  1284. It's the Holy Spirit

  1285. who does that.

  1286. And then,

  1287. and then,

  1288. in verse 11,

  1289. concerning judgment,

  1290. because the ruler

1291. of this world is judged.

  1292. And that's a reference

  1293. to the devil

  1294. and it's a very profound statement

1295. that when you see evil

  1296. in the world,

  1297. whether it's evil

  1298. in North Korea,

  1299. whether it's evil

  1300. in parts of Canada,

  1301. that there is always

1302. a demonic aspect to it.

  1303. And many people suffer

  1304. under a fear

  1305. of a personal type

  1306. of demonic oppression

  1307. and Jesus says,

  1308. my death and resurrection

  1309. is a complete unmasking

  1310. and defeat

  1311. of all that is

  1312. the most evil

  1313. in the world

  1314. and all spiritual powers.

  1315. And if you were

  1316. in certain parts

  1317. of the world

  1318. that still believes

  1319. in animism,

  1320. all your belief

  1321. in spirits

  1322. connected to trees

  1323. and rivers

  1324. and birds,

  1325. that's all judged.

1326. If you could put up

  1327. the next point, Andrew,

  1328. what is Jesus saying?

1329. That as you go forward,

  1330. always remember

  1331. that the gift

  1332. of the Holy Spirit

1333. is to your great advantage.

  1334. That the gift

  1335. of the Holy Spirit

1336. is to your great advantage.

  1337. Friends,

  1338. the Holy Spirit

1339. is not a charismatic thing

1340. and we shouldn't be upset.

1341. We all probably know stories

  1342. of crazy charismatics.

  1343. I'm not saying

  1344. all charismatics are crazy,

1345. but we all know stories

  1346. of crazy charismatics.

  1347. In fact, probably

  1348. if I just said,

  1349. during coffee time,

  1350. just share crazy

  1351. charismatic stories,

1352. there'd be lots of laughter

1353. as we talked each other

  1354. with crazy things

  1355. they've said and done.

  1356. Okay?

1357. But let me tell you,

  1358. what does Jesus say?

1359. The gift of the Holy Spirit

  1360. to Christians

  1361. is to your advantage.

1362. It is a good thing

  1363. every day

  1364. to say,

  1365. just in the words

  1366. of Galatians 5,

  1367. I try to remember

1368. to pray this every day,

  1369. every day.

1370. I know some of you

  1371. think I'm crazy,

1372. so the rest of you,

  1373. I try to remember

  1374. to pray Galatians 5 and 6

  1375. every day.

  1376. I say,

  1377. Father,

1378. as I go through my day today,

  1379. help me to walk

  1380. by the Holy Spirit,

1381. live by the Holy Spirit,

1382. be led by the Holy Spirit,

  1383. and keep in step

  1384. by the Holy Spirit.

1385. And that is a good prayer

  1386. to pray.

  1387. Where am I?

  1388. Verse 12.

1389. I still have many things

  1390. to say to you,

  1391. Jesus says.

  1392. Verse 12.

1393. But you cannot bear them now.

  1394. You can't carry them.

  1395. He's talking right

  1396. to the disciples.

1397. When the Spirit of Truth comes,

1398. that's how he talks now

  1399. about the Holy Spirit,

  1400. the Spirit of Truth.

  1401. He will guide you

  1402. into all the truth,

1403. for he will not speak

  1404. on his own authority

  1405. or out of himself,

  1406. but whatever he hears

1407. from the Father and the Son,

  1408. he will speak

1409. and he will declare to you

1410. the things that are to come.

1411. I want to break this up

  1412. into two things.

1413. If you could put up

  1414. the next point, Andrew,

  1415. here's the thing.

  1416. As you go forward,

  1417. always remember,

  1418. always remember

  1419. to believe the truth

1420. and nothing but the truth.

  1421. Be the BS detector

  1422. in your office.

  1423. Now, that might mean

  1424. you want to chat

1425. with a really wise guy

  1426. like Victor

1427. as to when you just

1428. publicly say to your boss

  1429. that's BS

  1430. or whether there's a more

  1431. circumspect way

  1432. to say it.

1433. But be the BS detector.

  1434. Like, the Bible,

  1435. when it says here

  1436. believe the truth,

  1437. it means you need

  1438. to listen well

  1439. and study well

  1440. and think well

  1441. and inquire well

  1442. and understand

  1443. what people are saying

  1444. and understand

  1445. what's true

1446. and what's false in it.

1447. But at the end of the day,

  1448. when the Bible says

1449. that it's to your advantage

  1450. that the Holy Spirit

  1451. is going to come,

  1452. it's to your advantage

1453. I give you the Holy Spirit.

1454. And who is the Holy Spirit?

  1455. The Holy Spirit

1456. is the Spirit of truth.

  1457. He will lead you

  1458. into all truth.

  1459. Then the truth

  1460. is your friend.

1461. And the cry of our heart

  1462. in every meeting,

  1463. in every class,

1464. and even when we read

1465. and when we watch TV

  1466. should be,

  1467. Lord,

  1468. may the Holy Spirit

  1469. help me to know

  1470. what's true

  1471. and believe what's true

  1472. and nothing

  1473. but the truth.

  1474. Continue on.

  1475. The next verse.

  1476. Verse 14.

1477. It's all part of the same idea

1478. but I wanted to divide it up.

  1479. He will glorify me,

  1480. that's the Holy Spirit,

  1481. for he will take

  1482. what is mine

1483. and declare it to you.

  1484. All that the Father

  1485. has is mine,

  1486. therefore I said

  1487. that he will take

  1488. what is mine

1489. and declare it to you.

  1490. And actually,

1491. if you take verses 12 to 15

  1492. as a group,

1493. it's one of the reasons

  1494. why Christians believe

  1495. that you don't,

  1496. every,

  1497. that the,

  1498. what I'm holding here

  1499. in the New Testament,

  1500. the New Testament

  1501. is the apostolic testimony

  1502. to Jesus.

1503. And Jesus is saying here,

1504. I am going to work in you

  1505. so the New Testament

  1506. can be written.

1507. And so that whether or not,

1508. remember when I was in Angola,

  1509. one of the things

  1510. I was doing,

  1511. some of the people

1512. I was meeting with in Angola

  1513. were people

  1514. who were giving

  1515. a semi-nomadic tribe

1516. that had no written language,

  1517. they were giving them

  1518. a written language

  1519. and they were translating

  1520. the New Testament

  1521. into that new language

  1522. so they could read

  1523. the apostolic testimony

  1524. for themselves.

  1525. We have a man

  1526. connected to our church

1527. who has gone to a people group

  1528. in Asia

  1529. that did not have

  1530. a written language

1531. and he is giving them

  1532. a written language

1533. and translating the New Testament

  1534. into their language

1535. so that they can learn

  1536. to read the language

  1537. they speak

  1538. and they can read

  1539. the apostolic testimony

  1540. to Jesus.

  1541. And that's the point

1542. if you could put it up.

  1543. As you go forward,

  1544. always remember

  1545. to humbly learn

  1546. from the scripture.

  1547. As you go forward,

  1548. always remember

  1549. to humbly learn

  1550. from the scripture.

  1551. A little saying,

1552. you've heard me say it before,

  1553. to many people

  1554. in Christian circles,

1555. to ask what the Bible says

  1556. is to reveal yourself

  1557. as a narrow-minded,

  1558. knuckle-dragging fundamentalist.

1559. But the truth of the matter is

  1560. that when you ask

1561. what does the Bible say,

  1562. you're asking

  1563. the Jesus question

  1564. because Jesus asks

1565. that question all the time.

1566. What does the Bible say?

  1567. Search the scriptures.

  1568. Let's continue on

  1569. as we get through

1570. the rest of this text.

  1571. Verse 16,

  1572. famous text for some,

  1573. a little while

1574. and you will see me no longer

  1575. and again,

  1576. a little while

1577. and you will see me.

1578. So some of his disciples

  1579. said to one another,

1580. what is this that he says to us

  1581. a little while

1582. and you will not see me

  1583. and again,

  1584. a little while

1585. and you will see me

1586. and because I am going

  1587. to the Father.

  1588. So they were saying,

  1589. what does he mean

  1590. a little while?

  1591. There's a bit of a clue

  1592. and interpretation

  1593. that the same phrase

1594. is said lots of times.

  1595. It probably means

  1596. it's important.

  1597. Okay?

  1598. We do not know

  1599. what he's talking about.

  1600. Jesus, verse 9,

  1601. knew that they wanted

  1602. to ask him.

1603. So he said to them,

1604. is this what you are asking yourselves,

1605. what I meant by saying

  1606. a little while

1607. and you will not see me

1608. and again a little while

1609. and you will see me?

  1610. Truly, truly,

  1611. I say to you,

1612. you will weep and lament

1613. but the world will rejoice.

  1614. You will be sorrowful

  1615. but your sorrow

  1616. will turn into joy.

1617. When a woman is giving birth,

  1618. she has sorrow

1619. because her hour has come

1620. but when she has delivered the baby,

  1621. she no longer remembers

  1622. the anguish

  1623. for the joy

  1624. that a human being

1625. has been born into the world.

  1626. So also,

  1627. you have sorrow now

1628. but I will see you again

1629. and your hearts will rejoice

1630. and no one will take

  1631. your joy

  1632. from you.

  1633. Now,

  1634. Jesus is talking about

1635. two things at the same time.

  1636. On one level,

  1637. he's talking very specifically

  1638. in the original language.

  1639. It's two things

  1640. at the same time.

  1641. On one hand,

  1642. he's telling his disciples,

  1643. I'm about to die

1644. and you're going to be crushed

1645. but on the third day

  1646. I'm going to rise

  1647. and your joy

  1648. will be unspeakable.

  1649. And he's also speaking

  1650. down the corridors

  1651. of history to us

  1652. and he's even speaking

  1653. to the apostles

  1654. after he ascends

  1655. into heaven

1656. that there will be times

1657. we have lots of sorrow

1658. but if you could put up

  1659. the next point,

  1660. Andrew,

  1661. as you go forward,

  1662. always remember,

  1663. always remember

  1664. that Jesus will

  1665. assuredly return

  1666. as liberating Lord.

  1667. He will assuredly return

  1668. as liberating Lord.

  1669. Verse 23,

1670. In that day you will ask

  1671. nothing of me,

  1672. right,

  1673. when he returns.

  1674. Truly, truly,

  1675. I say to you,

  1676. whatever you ask

1677. of the Father in my name,

1678. he will give it to you.

1679. Until now you have asked

1680. for nothing in my name.

1681. Ask and you will receive

  1682. that your joy

  1683. may be full.

  1684. I have said

  1685. these things to you

  1686. in figures of speech.

  1687. The hour is coming

1688. when I will no longer

  1689. speak to you

  1690. in figures of speech

  1691. but will tell you

  1692. plainly about the Father.

1693. In that day you will ask

  1694. in my name

1695. and I do not say to you

1696. that I will ask the Father

  1697. on your behalf

  1698. for the Father himself

  1699. loves you

1700. because you have loved me

  1701. and have believed

1702. that I came from God.

1703. I came from the Father

1704. and have come into the world

1705. and now I am leaving

  1706. the world

1707. and going to the Father.

  1708. Andrew,

  1709. could you put up

  1710. the next point?

  1711. Please,

  1712. as you go forward,

  1713. always remember

  1714. to pray

  1715. like you were talking

  1716. to your dad.

  1717. And some of you

  1718. might say,

  1719. George,

1720. if you knew my dad

1721. you would not say that.

1722. But then I would just add,

  1723. even when we complain

  1724. about how bad

  1725. our dads are,

  1726. it is because

  1727. on one level

  1728. we have an image

1729. of what a good dad

  1730. would be like.

  1731. for those of us

  1732. who are Christian dads

  1733. right here,

  1734. texts like this

  1735. are always

  1736. a time

  1737. that call us

1738. to get on our knees

  1739. and ask the Father

  1740. to help us

1741. to be a great dad

  1742. to our kids

  1743. and to repent

  1744. of the way

  1745. that we have been

  1746. a bad dad.

  1747. but we all have

  1748. this basic sense

1749. of what a good father

  1750. would be like.

  1751. And that's what Jesus

  1752. is talking about.

  1753. And so Jesus

  1754. is saying

  1755. as you go forward,

  1756. always remember

  1757. to pray

  1758. like you were talking

  1759. to your dad,

  1760. a good dad

  1761. who always listens

  1762. to you

  1763. and loves you.

1764. And now we bring it

  1765. to a close.

  1766. Verse 29.

  1767. His disciples said,

  1768. Ah,

  1769. now you are speaking

  1770. plainly and not using

  1771. figurative speech.

  1772. Now we know

1773. that you know all things

  1774. and do not need

  1775. anyone to question you.

1776. This is why we believe

1777. that you came from God.

  1778. Jesus answered them

  1779. and he answers them

  1780. with love.

  1781. Do you now believe?

  1782. Behold,

  1783. the hour is coming,

  1784. indeed it has come,

1785. when you will be scattered,

1786. each to his own home

1787. and will leave me alone.

1788. Yet I am not alone

1789. for the Father is with me.

  1790. And then Andrew,

  1791. could you put up

  1792. the last,

  1793. the first point again?

1794. Why don't we say this

  1795. together,

  1796. out loud?

1797. Can you say it with me?

  1798. I have told you

  1799. these things

  1800. so that in me

  1801. you may have peace.

  1802. In the world

  1803. you have trouble

  1804. and suffering,

  1805. but take courage.

  1806. I am victorious

  1807. over the world.

  1808. Please stand.

  1809. If you have not

  1810. yet called out

  1811. to Jesus

1812. to be your Savior and Lord,

1813. there is no better time now

1814. than just to call out

  1815. to him.

  1816. Say something like,

1817. I want to live in the real world

  1818. and I know

1819. that I will not be victorious

  1820. over death

  1821. or even the evil

  1822. in my life.

  1823. I ask,

  1824. I thank you,

  1825. Jesus,

  1826. that your great victory

  1827. can be for me

1828. and I reach out to you

  1829. that I might share

  1830. in your victory,

  1831. that you might be

  1832. my Savior and Lord.

1833. There is no better time now

1834. than to pray that prayer.

1835. And for the rest of us,

  1836. some maybe as dads

  1837. have to pray

  1838. a bit of prayer

  1839. of repentance

  1840. and prayer of longing,

1841. but for all of us,

  1842. we can pray

  1843. that the Lord

  1844. will help us

1845. to leave this place today

  1846. knowing the real world

  1847. and living with courage

  1848. under Jesus

  1849. and the power

  1850. of the Holy Spirit

  1851. in the real world.

  1852. Let's pray.

  1853. Father,

  1854. we thank you

  1855. for the different places

1856. that you have called us to.

  1857. Father,

  1858. we confess

  1859. some of us

1860. wish we had a better job

1861. or lived in a better house

  1862. or are looking forward

  1863. to a new day

  1864. and new opportunities

  1865. and Father,

  1866. we know that

  1867. some of these

  1868. are good things,

  1869. that it's not a bad thing

  1870. to have ambition.

  1871. It's not a bad thing

  1872. to seek

  1873. to maybe have

  1874. that more responsible job

  1875. or have more education.

  1876. Father,

  1877. it's not a bad thing.

  1878. But we ask,

  1879. Father,

  1880. that in all things,

  1881. Father,

  1882. that we might know

  1883. that we live

  1884. in the real world,

  1885. that we might remember

  1886. that you are God,

  1887. that Jesus did die

  1888. upon the cross,

  1889. that he did rise

  1890. from the dead,

  1891. that he is risen,

1892. that he will return again

1893. and that the Holy Spirit

1894. has been given to us

  1895. for our great advantage.

  1896. Father,

  1897. pour into our heart

  1898. the desire

1899. to walk with the Holy Spirit

1900. and live by the Holy Spirit

1901. and be led by the Holy Spirit

  1902. and keep in step

  1903. with the Holy Spirit

  1904. and grant us,

  1905. Father,

  1906. the desire

  1907. to turn from lies

1908. and to know the truth,

1909. to do the hard work

  1910. and the humbling work

  1911. of knowing the truth

  1912. and believing

  1913. in the truth

  1914. in all things.

  1915. Father,

1916. we ask that you would do

  1917. this wonderful

  1918. and mighty work

  1919. in our lives

1920. all for your great glory

  1921. and we ask

  1922. all of this

1923. in the name of Jesus

1924. and all God's people said,

  1925. Amen.

  1926. Amen.

  1927. Amen.

  1928. Amen.

  1929. Amen.

  1930. Amen.

  1931. Amen.

  1932. Amen.

  1933. Amen.

  1934. Amen.

  1935. Amen.

  1936. Amen.

  1937. Amen.

  1938. Amen.
