  1. Okay, well good morning everyone. Great to see you again. I think we're a little smaller this morning with the car park being out and a bunch of other things.

  2. We're a little smaller this morning. Last Sunday, Chris kicked off the Revelation series and did so really fantastically.

  3. We looked at, he kind of introduced the series and we looked at Revelation chapter 1.

    Revelation 1 chapter mention

  4. One, if you are new to Watermark or you weren't here last Sunday, I want to encourage you to download that because Chris really explained so much of this book of the Bible.

  5. And really going to help you get your head around it. And we're going to work through it between now and Christmas.

  6. And so if you weren't here last Sunday, I want to encourage you to download it and listen to that.

  7. The other thing is, if you didn't grab one of these on the way in, make sure you grab one on the way out.

  8. There's a whole lot of reading and information here that's going to help us work through this book of Revelation together.

  9. So if you didn't get one on the way in, make sure you grab one on the way out.

  10. And this morning we're going to continue by looking at Revelation chapter 2.

    Revelation 2 chapter mention

  11. And before we do that, let me pray and then we're going to listen to the scripture being read to us.

  12. So will you join me as we pray together?

  13. Heavenly Father, we have come to worship and adore you this morning.

  14. Father, many of us come with such a heavy heart this morning.

  15. We've come with confused emotions.

  16. We've come to have our eyes lifted off of ourselves and the circumstances of our world and to draw near to you.

  17. You are the rock of ages upon which we can build our lives and hinge our hopes.

  18. You are God of the ancient of days.

  19. You have seen kingdoms rise and kingdoms fall.

  20. You have existed in glory since before the world began.

  21. And your dominion and your authority and your sovereignty has never ever been threatened or toppled.

  22. You are God of the great I am.

  23. Everything we need is found in you.

  24. And so we come to you this morning to find our rest and our peace and our hope.

  25. God, where we are hurting and anxious, come and bring your healing power.

  26. Where we are fearful and worried, come and bring your reassurance.

  27. Where we are hurt and upset, come and minister your peace, we pray.

  28. God, teach us what you mean when you say in the Psalms, be angry but do not sin.

  29. Help us not to sin in our anger, in our pain, in our confusion, God.

  30. Lord, you call us to love you supremely and for you to be first in our hearts and our lives.

  31. God, we confess that so seldom is this our reality.

  32. Other things capture our heart's attention.

  33. Other fears, other loves, other things promise us the world and yet we fall for their lives.

  34. Other gods and idols lure our hearts away.

  35. Father, we confess this, we do not deny it.

  36. And yet though we sin continually, you continually repeat your kindness to us.

  37. Oh, that we would give ourselves to you forever and never attempt to live on our own or live for ourselves.

  38. Father, we need you to come and reorientate our hearts back towards you.

  39. Shine the light of the gospel into our hearts that we can turn back to you today, we pray, God.

  40. Father, this morning we want to pray for the churches across Asia, this wonderful continent in which we live.

  41. And this morning we especially want to pray for the church in India.

  42. God, that country with millions of gods and millions of idols.

  43. We pray that you, God, will be supreme.

  44. We pray for pastors and church leaders there, for churches across India.

  45. We pray for an incredible outpouring of the Holy Spirit today.

  46. God, revive and encourage and strengthen them.

  47. This morning, God, we want to pray in particular for our friends, Mark Davidson and Anand in Mumbai,

  48. for Aksha and Ranjit in New Delhi.

  49. God, we pray for Jonathan and Rajiv in Bangalore.

  50. God, may they know your presence.

  51. May you draw closer to them.

  52. Father, we pray where they're facing challenges and difficulties, strengthen them and encourage them, we pray.

  53. Oh, God, hear our prayers.

  54. We pray for the innumerable churches and leaders across Asia.

  55. Those we know and those we don't know.

  56. But you know everyone.

  57. Be their hope.

  58. Be their guide.

  59. Be their encouragement.

  60. We pray these things in your precious and glorious name, Jesus.

  61. Amen.

  62. Amen.

  63. Theo and Echo, will you come and read Revelation chapter 2 for us?

    Revelation 2 chapter mention

  64. Thanks.

  65. The scripture reading comes from Revelation chapter 2.

    Revelation 2 chapter mention

  66. Please follow along.

  67. Your bulletins are on the screen.

  68. To the angel of the church in Ephesus write,

  69. the words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand,

  70. who walks among the seven golden lampstands.

  71. I know your works, your toil and your patient endurance,

  72. and how you cannot bear with those who are evil,

  73. but have tested those who call themselves apostles and are not,

  74. and felt them to be false.

  75. I know you are enduring patiently and bearing up for my name's sake,

  76. and you have not grown weary.

  77. But I have this against you,

  78. that you have abandoned the love you had at first.

  79. Remember, therefore, from where you have fallen,

  80. repent and do the works you did at first.

  81. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place,

  82. unless you repent.

  83. Yet this you have, you hate the works of the Nicolaitans,

  84. which I also hate.

  85. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

  86. To the one who conquers, I will grant to eat of the tree of life,

  87. which is in the paradise of God.

  88. And to the angel of the church in Theotira write,

  89. the words of the Son of God,

  90. who has eyes like a flame of fire,

  91. and whose feet are like burnished bronze.

  92. I know your works,

  93. your love and faith and service and patient endurance,

  94. and that your latter works exceed the first.

  95. But I have this against you,

  96. that you tolerate that woman Jezebel,

  97. who calls herself a prophetess,

  98. and is teaching and seducing my servants

  99. to practice sexual immorality,

  100. and to eat food sacrificed to idols.

  101. I gave her time to repent,

  102. but she refuses to repent of her sexual immorality.

  103. Behold, I will throw her onto a sick bag.

  104. And those who commit adultery with her,

  105. I will throw into great tribulation,

  106. unless they repent of their works.

  107. And I will strike her children dead.

  108. And all the churches will know that I am He who searches mind and heart,

  109. and I will give to each of you according to your works.

  110. But to the rest of you in Theotira,

  111. who do not hold this teaching,

  112. who have not learned what some call the deep things of Satan,

  113. to you I say,

  114. I do not lay on you any other burden.

  115. Only hold fast what you have until I come.

  116. The one who conquers and who keeps my works until the end,

  117. to him I will give authority over the nations,

  118. and he will rule them with a rod of iron,

  119. as when earthen pots are broken in pieces,

  120. even as I myself have received authority from my Father.

  121. And I will give him the morning star.

  122. He who has an ear,

  123. let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

  124. This is the Word of God.

  125. Great. Thanks, Echo and Theo.

  126. Okay, so we are in the book of Revelation,

  127. as you would have heard many times by now.

  128. And it is a book that's written by the last apostle, John.

  129. And he is on the island of Patmos.

  130. He's there because of his witness of Jesus.

  131. He's there in exile.

  132. And while he's there,

  133. God gives him this revelation,

  134. and he writes it down for these various churches.

  135. And this revelation,

  136. the Greek word is apocalypse.

  137. And sometimes when we think of apocalypse,

  138. as Chris said last week,

  139. we can think of fire and doomsday

  140. and comets hitting the earth

  141. and that kind of stuff.

  142. Actually, the word apocalypse

  143. just simply means a revelation.

  144. And the reason God gives John this revelation

  145. is because he wants to show him

  146. what's happening in the spiritual realm.

  147. It's like peeling back the curtain

  148. and revealing what's behind there

  149. or what's obscure.

  150. And the reason for this is that

  151. God is showing John and us

  152. that so much of our lives is lived

  153. merely in response to what we can see.

  154. We think just purely in a physical world,

  155. and God wants to reveal to us

  156. that there's so much more than what meets the eye.

  157. There's a whole spiritual realm going on around us.

  158. And it's kind of like if you're watching a movie

  159. or a series or something,

  160. and let's say there's a villain, okay?

  161. And his name happens to be Dan.

  162. And this villain you see here

  163. has a conversation with his partner in crime

  164. called Justin.

  165. And these two are plotting some case.

  166. And then this good-looking villain called Dan

  167. goes up to somebody innocent

  168. and starts sweet-talking them

  169. and having a conversation,

  170. getting them to try and give them access

  171. to government archives

  172. or some million-dollar deal

  173. or whatever it is.

  174. What's happened is

  175. when you see that scene,

  176. the innocent person,

  177. innocent person Simon,

  178. all they know what's going on

  179. is this nice-looking person called Dan

  180. has come and spoken to them

  181. and is trying to sweet-talk them.

  182. But because you've seen the preceding scene,

  183. you've seen what's happened,

  184. you're thinking,

  185. no, don't give them the access codes.

  186. Don't take that drink.

  187. Don't tell them that piece of information.

  188. Why?

  189. Because what's been revealed to you

  190. is the real plot

  191. that's going on behind the scenes.

  192. On the surface,

  193. it just looks like

  194. these two people having a conversation.

  195. But there's a whole other plot

  196. that's going on behind.

  197. That's what God is doing.

  198. He's saying,

  199. John, churches, Christians, watermark,

  200. I want to reveal to you

  201. to show you what's going on

  202. in the spiritual realm.

  203. And so the book of Revelation is

  204. that's what much of it's about.

  205. As Chris said,

  206. it's also a prophecy.

  207. We see this in chapter 1, verse 3,

  208. where he says,

  209. Blessed is the one

  210. who reads this prophecy.

  211. Now, in the Bible,

  212. prophecy is very seldom

  213. about foretelling the future.

  214. Sometimes we think

  215. prophets are those

  216. that can see into the future

  217. and then tell us

  218. what's going to happen.

  219. Actually, in the Bible,

  220. prophecy is always

  221. a word from God

  222. that demands a response.

  223. Thus saith the Lord.

  224. What are you going to do with this?

  225. And sometimes

  226. when God brings,

  227. or when a prophet speaks,

  228. he'll say,

  229. This is what God says.

  230. And if you don't respond,

  231. then this will happen.

  232. But actually,

  233. when God brings a word

  234. via a prophecy

  235. or his prophet,

  236. it should arrest us.

  237. It should make us sit up

  238. and think,

  239. Wow, okay,

  240. what am I going to do with that?

  241. How am I going to respond?

  242. And that's really important

  243. because as we go through

  244. the book of Revelation,

  245. it's easy to be caught up

  246. with all this imagery.

  247. There's the beast

  248. and the dragon

  249. and this Babylon

  250. and this prostitute.

  251. And we can get caught up

  252. with all the imagery

  253. and try and understand it.

  254. But actually,

  255. this book is meant

  256. to arrest us.

  257. It's meant to make us

  258. sit up and say,

  259. Okay, God, you're speaking.

  260. How am I going to respond

  261. to your word?

  262. And then thirdly,

  263. the book is not only

  264. a revelation.

  265. It's not only a prophecy.

  266. It's also a letter.

  267. And that brings us

  268. to our passage of Scripture today.

  269. Because what we see

  270. in chapter 2

  271. and chapter 3

  272. is that John

  273. writes the book

  274. of Revelation

  275. to seven

  276. very specific

  277. individual

  278. real-life churches

  279. that are facing

  280. real-life challenges

  281. in modern-day Turkey,

  282. the ancient world

  283. of Asia Minor.

  284. And these churches

  285. weren't just,

  286. or the letter

  287. isn't just theoretical.

  288. It isn't just

  289. an analogy

  290. or a parable

  291. that Jesus tells.

  292. These are real letters

  293. written to real churches

  294. facing real challenges.

  295. I think we've got a map

  296. up on the screen.

  297. But what's interesting

  298. is that sometimes

  299. we can think

  300. that these are

  301. seven letters

  302. written to seven churches.

  303. Like the postman

  304. comes with his

  305. stack of letters

  306. and says,

  307. There you go, Ephesus.

  308. There you go, Thyatira.

  309. There you go, Pergamum.

  310. And later,

  311. see at the back

  312. there's even a letter

  313. for you.

  314. But actually,

  315. what's happening

  316. is it's one letter,

  317. it's one book

  318. that is written

  319. and it first gets

  320. delivered to the church

  321. in Ephesus

  322. and they read

  323. the section to them

  324. and then they read

  325. the section to the next church

  326. and then they read

  327. the section to the church

  328. in Pergamum

  329. and Thyatira,

  330. et cetera, et cetera.

  331. And then they go

  332. and they read

  333. the rest of the book

  334. of Revelation

  335. and when they finish

  336. with the whole thing

  337. and they understand it,

  338. they then send it

  339. on to the next church

  340. and then Smyrna gets it

  341. and they read

  342. from the beginning

  343. and they read

  344. the letter to Ephesus

  345. and the letter to Smyrna

  346. and et cetera, et cetera,

  347. the whole thing

  348. and then they take

  349. the entire Revelation

  350. and they pass it on

  351. to the next church.

  352. So they didn't just

  353. each get their own

  354. individual envelopes

  355. with kind of like

  356. a postscript at the end.

  357. The entire book

  358. of Revelation

  359. is delivered

  360. to each one

  361. of the seven churches.

  362. Now what's interesting

  363. is that in each one

  364. of those sections

  365. of the individual churches,

  366. Jesus has some

  367. challenging things

  368. and He often rebukes

  369. the churches,

  370. which is interesting

  371. because as you're

  372. reading the letter,

  373. you know that all

  374. the other churches

  375. are going to read

  376. your mail, right?

  377. Jesus is not very good

  378. at saving face.

  379. He kind of just

  380. puts it all out there,

  381. tells everyone

  382. what He has to say

  383. to everyone.

  384. But here's why

  385. this is important

  386. because our little church

  387. here in Hong Kong,

  388. right,

  389. on the west side

  390. of the island,

  391. hopefully there's

  392. some things

  393. we're doing well,

  394. hopefully Jesus

  395. would commend us,

  396. but there's probably

  397. also some things

  398. that He would

  399. challenge us on.

  400. And so what is Jesus

  401. going to do to us?

  402. Does Jesus write

  403. an individual letter

  404. to every church

  405. in the world,

  406. to you at Watermark,

  407. here's your letter.

  408. To that church

  409. meeting under the tree

  410. in the Sahara Desert,

  411. here's your letter.

  412. To that church

  413. meeting on the corner

  414. of 5th and 17th Avenue

  415. somewhere in Pennsylvania,

  416. what does Jesus do?

  417. He gives us

  418. what He gave

  419. His original churches,

  420. which is the entire revelation.

  421. And here's why

  422. He does that.

  423. Because what we

  424. don't just need

  425. is a performance review.

  426. We don't just need

  427. Jesus come and say,

  428. Hey, Watermark,

  429. I've gone through

  430. the checklist

  431. and you're doing

  432. three things right

  433. and four things badly.

  434. Here I want you to prove.

  435. What we need

  436. is what the church

  437. has needed,

  438. which is a revelation

  439. of Christ in His glory

  440. on His throne.

  441. We need a revelation

  442. of how magnificent

  443. Jesus is.

  444. We also need a revelation

  445. of how Satan

  446. is going to try

  447. and attack the churches

  448. and all the ways

  449. that He does that

  450. through false teaching

  451. and this and that.

  452. But we also need

  453. a revelation

  454. of how Jesus wins

  455. in the end

  456. and how ultimately

  457. Satan is crushed

  458. and Jesus is victorious.

  459. Does that make sense?

  460. And so what we need

  461. is not just

  462. a performance review.

  463. We need the book

  464. of Revelation.

  465. And so Jesus gives us

  466. what He gave

  467. the original churches,

  468. which is,

  469. He has a revelation

  470. of my glory.

  471. Learn.

  472. Read this

  473. and be blessed

  474. by it.

  475. Okay?

  476. Something else

  477. we're going to learn

  478. about these letters

  479. is almost everything

  480. that's written

  481. in the section

  482. to the seven

  483. individual churches

  484. is also written

  485. later on

  486. found in the book

  487. of Revelation.

  488. And everything

  489. we see later on

  490. in the book

  491. of Revelation

  492. is found

  493. in the seven churches

  494. earlier on.

  495. And so,

  496. in a sense,

  497. these seven churches

  498. are almost live

  499. flesh and blood

  500. case studies

  501. for what John

  502. is going to say

  503. later on.

  504. So later on,

  505. you're going to see

  506. these images

  507. of beasts

  508. and warfare

  509. and horses

  510. and all this stuff

  511. and you can kind of think

  512. what on earth

  513. is going on?

  514. But actually,

  515. He's given us

  516. some case studies

  517. to show us

  518. how it plays out

  519. in real life

  520. early on in the book

  521. in these seven churches.

  522. And so,

  523. for example,

  524. in the letter

  525. to the church

  526. of Philadelphia,

  527. Jesus says this,

  528. because you've kept

  529. my word

  530. about patience

  531. and endurance,

  532. I will keep you

  533. from the hour

  534. of trial

  535. that is coming

  536. on the whole world.

  537. But then,

  538. later on,

  539. that's exactly

  540. what we're going to see

  541. in chapters 6 and 7.

  542. There's this tribulation

  543. that's coming

  544. on the whole world

  545. and who's going

  546. to keep God's people?

  547. Well,

  548. at the end of chapter 6

  549. we see God's going

  550. to be the one

  551. who keeps His people.

  552. God seals His people

  553. and He keeps them

  554. even in the midst

  555. of trials and persecution.

  556. All we see

  557. in chapter 2,

  558. the letter

  559. to the church

  560. in Smyrna,

  561. Jesus says,

  562. Be faithful unto death

  563. and I will give you

  564. the crown of life.

  565. In other words,

  566. He writes to this church

  567. and He says,

  568. You're going through

  569. difficulty

  570. even if you have to die,

  571. even if it costs

  572. you your life,

  573. be faithful

  574. because I will vindicate you

  575. and you will come

  576. back to life.

  577. Well,

  578. that's exactly

  579. what we see

  580. in chapter 11.

  581. In chapter 11,

  582. there are these two witnesses

  583. and they are taken

  584. to the town square

  585. and they're talking

  586. about Jesus

  587. and they are killed,

  588. they're chopped down

  589. and they're left for dead

  590. in the town square

  591. so that everyone

  592. can walk past

  593. and mock at them

  594. and scoff at them

  595. and laugh at them

  596. but what happens?

  597. They are vindicated.

  598. They're brought back to life.

  599. And so that's exactly

  600. what we see in chapter 2

  601. with the letter to Smyrna.

  602. In other words,

  603. everything God writes

  604. to His people

  605. in the seven letters,

  606. He then shows

  607. how that plays out

  608. later on in the book

  609. and everything we see

  610. later on in the book

  611. is given to us

  612. an example

  613. earlier on

  614. in the letters

  615. of Revelation.

  616. Okay,

  617. last thing

  618. by way of introduction

  619. and then we're going

  620. to get into one today.

  621. When we read

  622. these seven sections

  623. to the seven churches,

  624. one of the things

  625. we'll quickly notice

  626. is that it follows

  627. a very similar flow

  628. or pattern.

  629. It starts off telling us

  630. these are the words

  631. of Jesus

  632. and then describes

  633. some aspect

  634. of Jesus

  635. in His glory.

  636. And so it says

  637. these are the words

  638. of Jesus

  639. who has eyes

  640. like fire

  641. or these are the words

  642. of Jesus

  643. who holds

  644. the keys of life

  645. or these are the words

  646. of Jesus

  647. who holds

  648. the lampstands

  649. in His hands.

  650. So it says

  651. these are the words

  652. of Jesus

  653. and then it describes

  654. some aspect

  655. of Jesus

  656. and His glory.

  657. Now,

  658. that's really important

  659. because what it means

  660. is firstly

  661. these aren't just

  662. letters of advice.

  663. It's not like

  664. Joe Bloggs

  665. from New York City

  666. or Tim Keller.

  667. Tim Keller

  668. writing to Watermark

  669. saying,

  670. Watermark,

  671. I've done an assessment

  672. and this is what

  673. I think of you.

  674. These are the words

  675. of Jesus,

  676. the sovereign God

  677. and therefore

  678. we better sit up

  679. and listen.

  680. But in addition,

  681. each aspect

  682. of Jesus' glory

  683. that's revealed

  684. in the opening lines

  685. speaks to some aspect

  686. of what the church

  687. is going through

  688. later on.

  689. Either the encouragement

  690. or the challenge

  691. that He brings.

  692. So,

  693. for instance,

  694. look at the letter

  695. to the church

  696. in Philadelphia.

  697. It says this,

  698. These are the words

  699. of Jesus,

  700. the Holy One

  701. who has the key

  702. of David,

  703. who opens doors

  704. that no one can shut

  705. and who shuts doors

  706. that no one can open.

  707. Okay?

  708. But then later on

  709. in the letter,

  710. this is what He says

  711. to them,

  712. I have set before you

  713. an open door

  714. which no one

  715. is able to shut.

  716. I know that you

  717. have little power

  718. and yet you have

  719. kept my words

  720. and not denied

  721. my name.

  722. So,

  723. what's going on here?

  724. The church in Philadelphia

  725. is a small church.

  726. Okay?

  727. This isn't Philadelphia

  728. and USA.

  729. This is Philadelphia

  730. and Turkey.

  731. Okay?

  732. It's a small church.

  733. They're not very powerful.

  734. They're not very rich.

  735. They don't have

  736. a lot of influence,

  737. either economic influence

  738. or cultural influence

  739. or political influence

  740. and they're feeling

  741. the pressure

  742. because the Roman world

  743. is closing in on them

  744. and they feel like

  745. our church doors

  746. are about to be

  747. closed and shut off.

  748. Any minute now,

  749. the emperor is going

  750. to come and close us down

  751. and Jesus writes them

  752. and says,

  753. these are the words

  754. of the one

  755. who opens doors

  756. that no one can shut

  757. and who shuts doors

  758. that no one can close.

  759. I know what's going on

  760. and even though

  761. you feel threatened,

  762. know that there's nothing

  763. that anybody

  764. in the world can do.

  765. If I want your church

  766. to stand,

  767. it will stand.

  768. You see what he's saying?

  769. The words of the one

  770. who has the resources

  771. to accomplish

  772. what you and your church

  773. needs.

  774. And friends,

  775. that's really encouraging

  776. because as Watermark,

  777. there are going to be

  778. a whole lot of things

  779. that we go through

  780. and every resource

  781. that we need as a church

  782. is found,

  783. not in your pastors,

  784. not out there

  785. through some pastor,

  786. it's found in Jesus.

  787. These are the words

  788. of Jesus

  789. who has every resource

  790. we need

  791. to encounter

  792. or to go through

  793. the challenges

  794. that we're going to face.

  795. If we're struggling

  796. with unity,

  797. these are the words

  798. of Jesus

  799. who holds his church together.

  800. If we're struggling

  801. with unforgiveness,

  802. these are the words

  803. of Jesus,

  804. the one who pours grace

  805. into our hearts

  806. and shows us

  807. what forgiveness looks like

  808. so that we can forgive others.

  809. If we're struggling

  810. with feeling unloved

  811. or unloving

  812. to those around us,

  813. these are the words

  814. of the one

  815. who loved us

  816. with an everlasting love,

  817. who pours his love

  818. into our hearts

  819. that we can make

  820. know and make known

  821. his love

  822. to those around us.

  823. Does that make sense?

  824. Should I explain

  825. that all again?

  826. Okay, great.

  827. Thank you, Simon.

  828. Okay, so first thing

  829. is these are the words

  830. of Jesus who...

  831. Second thing is then

  832. Jesus says,

  833. I know what's going on

  834. in your church

  835. and this is so encouraging.

  836. I know every challenge

  837. you're facing,

  838. I know what's going on.

  839. I know how you've endured.

  840. I know how you've put up

  841. with difficulty.

  842. I know how you're

  843. facing persecution.

  844. I know what's going on.

  845. But it's also a warning

  846. because he knows

  847. everything that's going on

  848. and he also knows

  849. where we compromise.

  850. Jesus says,

  851. I know what's going on

  852. in your church.

  853. And often there's

  854. a commendation there,

  855. an encouragement.

  856. And then he says,

  857. thirdly,

  858. but this is what

  859. I have against you.

  860. There's an admonition

  861. or a correction,

  862. a rebuke.

  863. Watermark,

  864. I'm so encouraged

  865. by this is what's going on

  866. in your church,

  867. says Jesus.

  868. But there's this thing

  869. that I want you to be aware of.

  870. Don't forget about this.

  871. And then fourth thing

  872. Jesus says,

  873. is he says,

  874. he who has ears,

  875. I want you to hear.

  876. In other words,

  877. don't just think,

  878. that's interesting,

  879. I'm sure the elders

  880. will think about this.

  881. Listen up.

  882. What is Jesus saying

  883. to us as a church?

  884. And then the fifth thing

  885. is he always promises

  886. some gift of grace.

  887. He says,

  888. to those who endure,

  889. I promise you this.

  890. I will give you this.

  891. I will stand with you

  892. in this way.

  893. And so,

  894. that's how the letters

  895. unfold.

  896. Okay,

  897. now with that introduction,

  898. today we're going to dive

  899. into primarily

  900. the letter to the church

  901. in Ephesus

  902. and we'll reference

  903. a little bit

  904. the second one

  905. that Theo and Echo

  906. read to us,

  907. the church of Thyatira.

  908. And so,

  909. look at Revelation chapter 2

    Revelation 2:1

  910. verse 1 with me.

  911. Let's work through

  912. this passage together.

  913. If you've got your Bible,

  914. open up

  915. and let's work through it.

  916. Jesus says this,

  917. to the angel

  918. of the church

  919. in Ephesus,

  920. write these words.

  921. These are the words

  922. of him

  923. who holds

  924. the seven stars

  925. in his right hand

  926. and who walks

  927. amongst the seven

  928. golden lampstands.

  929. Now,

  930. remember from last week,

  931. what does that mean?

  932. Okay,

  933. Jesus says,

  934. I hold the stars

  935. in my hand.

  936. The stars are the angels,

  937. those that are

  938. kind of looking

  939. after the church

  940. and the church

  941. is the lampstand.

  942. Now,

  943. in other words,

  944. Jesus says,

  945. I'm holding you.

  946. Church in Ephesus,

  947. you're going through

  948. challenges,

  949. you're facing persecution,

  950. the Roman Empire

  951. is squeezing in on you.

  952. Your future

  953. is not in the hands

  954. of your pastor,

  955. it's not in the hands

  956. of the Roman Emperor,

  957. Domitian,

  958. it's not in the hands

  959. of any political leader

  960. or the economy.

  961. Your church

  962. is in my hands.

  963. I've got you.

  964. Friends,

  965. we as a church

  966. are going to face

  967. some challenges.

  968. There are going to be

  969. things that are

  970. awkward or difficult

  971. that come our way,

  972. no doubt.

  973. Jesus says,

  974. this church

  975. is in his hands.

  976. The words of him

  977. who holds the church

  978. in his hands.

  979. That's encouragement,

  980. but as we said

  981. just now,

  982. it's also a warning

  983. because when Jesus

  984. talks about a lampstand,

  985. he's not talking

  986. about an Ikea

  987. lampstand, okay?

  988. You pull the little

  989. chain and then

  990. it goes off

  991. and you pull it again

  992. and it goes on.

  993. What's he talking about?

  994. He's talking about

  995. one of those

  996. Jewish lampstands

  997. that's got the

  998. stand in the middle

  999. and then the seven

  1000. branches that

  1001. come out of it.

  1002. Eric,

  1003. I don't know

  1004. what we call it.

1005. What do we call it?

  1006. Menorah?

  1007. Is that right?

  1008. Okay,

  1009. thank you.

  1010. It's called a menorah.

  1011. Okay,

  1012. so it's got

  1013. the lampstands

  1014. got the seven

  1015. branches that

  1016. come out of it

  1017. and on top

  1018. of each branch

  1019. is a candle.

  1020. And so when Jesus

  1021. says,

  1022. I'm holding the

  1023. lampstand,

  1024. I'm walking

  1025. amongst you,

  1026. it also means

  1027. he has the

  1028. authority to

  1029. blow out the

  1030. candle.

  1031. He's the one

  1032. that's holding it

  1033. but he also

  1034. has the authority

  1035. to snuff it out.

  1036. Jesus says

  1037. to the church

  1038. in Ephesus,

  1039. the one who's

  1040. holding the

  1041. stars and the

  1042. lampstands.

  1043. Look at verse 2.

  1044. I know your works,

  1045. your toil,

  1046. your patience

  1047. endurance,

  1048. and how you cannot

  1049. bear with those

  1050. that are evil,

  1051. but have tested

  1052. those who call

  1053. themselves apostles

  1054. and are not,

  1055. and you found

  1056. them to be false.

  1057. I know you are

  1058. enduring patiently

  1059. and bearing up

  1060. for my namesake,

  1061. and you have not

  1062. grown weary.

  1063. So what's Jesus

  1064. commending here?

  1065. What's his

  1066. encouragement to

  1067. them?

  1068. He says,

  1069. I know your

  1070. righteous deeds,

  1071. I know you are

  1072. swimming upstream

  1073. against the tide

  1074. of your culture,

  1075. and I know that

  1076. you love my word

  1077. and you've taken

  1078. my word seriously.

  1079. You see,

  1080. what's happening

  1081. in Ephesus is

  1082. there are two

  1083. great cultural

  1084. pressures,

  1085. or two other

  1086. things that were

  1087. distracting the

  1088. Christians.

  1089. The first is

  1090. Ephesus housed

  1091. the temple of

  1092. Artemis.

  1093. And the temple

  1094. of Artemis was

  1095. one of the

  1096. seven wonders

  1097. of the ancient

  1098. world,

  1099. and Artemis

  1100. was worshipped

  1101. everywhere in

  1102. Ephesus.

  1103. It was the

  1104. icon of Ephesus.

  1105. People would

  1106. come from far

  1107. and wide to

  1108. worship the

  1109. goddess of

  1110. Artemis.

  1111. And Artemis

  1112. was the goddess

  1113. of life and

  1114. fertility.

  1115. So if you are

  1116. struggling to

  1117. have kids,

  1118. your family

  1119. would say,

  1120. go and pay

  1121. homage to the

  1122. goddess of

  1123. Artemis.

  1124. Go to the

  1125. temple and

  1126. burn some

  1127. incense.

  1128. She will

  1129. look after

  1130. you.

  1131. And so

  1132. Artemis is

  1133. everywhere in

  1134. Ephesus.

  1135. And remember

  1136. in Acts chapter

    Acts 20 chapter mention

  1137. 20, I think

  1138. it is,

  1139. 21, the city

  1140. of Ephesus is

  1141. unhappy with

  1142. the Christians

  1143. because they

  1144. say, now

  1145. Artemis is not

  1146. going to be

  1147. worshipped.

  1148. And they

  1149. drive them

  1150. out of the

  1151. city.

  1152. And so the

  1153. Christians,

  1154. those facing

  1155. persecution,

  1156. are persecuted

  1157. because their

  1158. family members

  1159. would tell

  1160. them, it's

  1161. okay to

  1162. follow Jesus.

  1163. just don't

  1164. forget to

  1165. every now

  1166. and then

  1167. pay homage

  1168. to Artemis.

  1169. But the

  1170. other great

  1171. thing in

  1172. Ephesus, or

  1173. the other

  1174. terrible thing,

  1175. challenge, is

  1176. that Ephesus

  1177. was the

  1178. primary city

  1179. of imperial

  1180. cult worship.

  1181. And so the

  1182. first, the

  1183. emperor Domitian

  1184. came to

  1185. Ephesus and

  1186. they set up

  1187. the first

  1188. temple and

  1189. the first

  1190. shrine to

  1191. the emperor.

  1192. And so at

  1193. the Agora,

  1194. which is the

  1195. marketplace where

  1196. you do business

  1197. and networking

  1198. and you meet

  1199. people and you

  1200. do your weekly

  1201. grocery shopping,

  1202. as you walk

  1203. into the

  1204. Agora, you

  1205. have to take

  1206. a pinch of

  1207. incense, throw

  1208. it at the

  1209. feet of the

  1210. shrine to the

  1211. emperor Domitian

  1212. and pay homage

  1213. to him.

  1214. And so for

  1215. the Christians

  1216. who go to

  1217. the Agora to

  1218. also do business

  1219. and meet

  1220. people and

  1221. network and

  1222. do their

  1223. shopping, what

  1224. are they going

  1225. to do?

  1226. And maybe

  1227. they're in

  1228. their company,

  1229. they all go

  1230. after work for

  1231. drinks down at

  1232. the Agora and

  1233. there's only one

  1234. person that

  1235. follows Jesus.

  1236. What's he

  1237. going to do?

  1238. Sorry, am I

  1239. making a noise

  1240. here?

  1241. What's he

  1242. going to do?

  1243. And so the

  1244. Christians are

  1245. constantly faced

  1246. with this

  1247. pressure.

  1248. And so Jesus

  1249. here commends

  1250. them, he says

  1251. you've stayed

  1252. faithful, you

  1253. focused on

  1254. Jesus, it's

  1255. required serious

  1256. work, serious

  1257. endurance.

  1258. Jesus says I've

  1259. seen it, I

  1260. know your

  1261. works, I know

  1262. your toil, I

  1263. know your

  1264. patient endurance.

  1265. But now look

  1266. at what he

  1267. says.

  1268. He says I

  1269. know you

  1270. cannot bear

  1271. with those

  1272. who are evil.

  1273. Now who's he

  1274. talking about

  1275. when he says

  1276. you cannot bear

  1277. with those

  1278. who are evil?

  1279. He's talking

  1280. about the

  1281. emperor?

  1282. He's talking

  1283. about villain

  1284. Dan and

  1285. his sidekick

  1286. Justin?

  1287. Who are the

  1288. evil people

  1289. that Jesus

  1290. is talking

  1291. about?

  1292. Look at what

  1293. he says.

  1294. He says but

  1295. you have

  1296. tested those

  1297. who call

  1298. themselves

  1299. apostles and

  1300. are not and

  1301. you found

  1302. them to be

  1303. false.

  1304. You see

  1305. what's happening

  1306. here in

  1307. Ephesus is that

  1308. some people are

  1309. coming in and

  1310. they're saying

  1311. we know that

  1312. Paul came and

  1313. taught you the

  1314. Bible and he

  1315. said some good

  1316. things but if

  1317. you really want

  1318. to know God

  1319. we'll show you

  1320. some other

  1321. things.

  1322. We'll teach you

  1323. some other

  1324. things.

  1325. And they're

  1326. coming in with

  1327. all sorts of

  1328. false teaching

  1329. or they're

  1330. coming in saying

  1331. do you think

  1332. the Bible says

  1333. that?

  1334. Yeah Jesus is

  1335. good but he's

  1336. not God.

  1337. You know.

  1338. Or worship

  1339. Jesus but don't

  1340. forget to also

  1341. pay homage to

  1342. Domitian or

  1343. Artemis or

  1344. Deceitism whatever

  1345. it is.

  1346. They were coming

  1347. in with false

  1348. teaching and what

  1349. did the church

  1350. in Ephesus do?

  1351. They would open

  1352. up their Bible and

  1353. say really?

  1354. Just show us in

  1355. the scriptures where

  1356. does it say that?

  1357. In other words they

  1358. would test what they

  1359. heard from the

  1360. stage on Sunday

  1361. according to God's

  1362. word and sometimes

  1363. they found what

  1364. people were saying

  1365. was false and so

  1366. they would reject

  1367. it.

  1368. Here was a church

  1369. which was strong

  1370. theologically and

  1371. dogmatic about we're

  1372. only going to listen

1373. to what God says in

  1374. his word.

1375. We're not here to be

  1376. impressed by false

  1377. teachers or eloquent

  1378. teachers or great

  1379. orators.

  1380. We're here to see

  1381. what does God say

  1382. and that's what

  1383. we're going to

  1384. follow.

  1385. And all this makes

  1386. sense because when

1387. we read the rest of

  1388. the New Testament

  1389. remember the books

  1390. of 1 and 2

  1391. Timothy?

  1392. They're written by

  1393. the apostle Paul to

  1394. this young man

  1395. Timothy and

  1396. Timothy is leading

  1397. a church and where

  1398. is he leading the

  1399. church?

  1400. Do you remember?

  1401. In the city of

  1402. Ephesus.

  1403. And as you read

  1404. the books of 1

  1405. Timothy and 2

  1406. Timothy Paul says

  1407. again and again

  1408. and again,

  1409. Timothy I want you

  1410. to guard the good

  1411. deposit of the

  1412. doctrine that's

  1413. been entrusted to

  1414. you.

  1415. Timothy I want you

  1416. to preach the

  1417. word.

  1418. Timothy dedicate

  1419. yourself to the

  1420. public reading of

  1421. scripture and to

  1422. the teaching of

  1423. God's word.

  1424. Paul writes to

  1425. Timothy about a

  1426. hundred times and

  1427. says whatever you

  1428. do make sure you

  1429. stick closely to

  1430. God's word and to

  1431. the theology and to

  1432. doctrine that you've

  1433. heard.

  1434. Don't take in these

  1435. other teachings.

  1436. Make sure that

  1437. whatever you're

  1438. teaching is found in

  1439. the scriptures.

  1440. And so here the

  1441. church in Ephesus is

  1442. rock solid.

  1443. They are theologically

  1444. strong.

  1445. They've been taught

  1446. well by Paul.

  1447. They've been taught

  1448. well by Timothy and

  1449. they're a church that

  1450. know their theology and

  1451. they know God's word

  1452. and they love God's

  1453. word.

  1454. And Watermark, can I

  1455. say, can the elders

1456. say, we would love for

1457. this to be true of us

  1458. as a church.

  1459. When I think about

  1460. Watermark, one of my

  1461. dreams for Watermark is

  1462. that in 50,

  1463. 60, and in 100

1464. years time, we are a

  1465. church which is rock

  1466. solid theologically and

  1467. doctrinally because we

  1468. know God's word.

  1469. We've been built on

  1470. God's word.

1471. I pray that when my

  1472. kids are grandparents,

  1473. that anyone who comes

1474. to Hong Kong will know

1475. if you want to be taught

  1476. God's word, there is a

  1477. church called Watermark

  1478. Church.

1479. You can go there and

  1480. they will teach you

  1481. God's word because that

1482. is a church that loves

  1483. God's word.

  1484. God's word.

1485. And so Jesus writes to

  1486. this church and he

  1487. says, well done.

  1488. You've tested what you've

  1489. heard against God's

  1490. word and you've tested

  1491. what's false and you

1492. love and you love my

  1493. word.

1494. Look at what he says in

  1495. verse 6.

1496. He says, you hate the

  1497. teachings of the

  1498. Nicolaitans, which I also

  1499. hate.

  1500. The Nicolaitans were a

1501. group of people that were

  1502. teaching, worship Jesus,

1503. but you know, it doesn't

1504. matter if you also take on

  1505. some other stuff and

  1506. they were teaching,

  1507. teaching that was

  1508. promoting sin and

  1509. unholiness and lack of

1510. purity in the church and

1511. Jesus says, I want you to

  1512. follow my word.

  1513. Now, unfortunately, that's

1514. not all that Jesus says to

1515. the church in Ephesus because

1516. look at what he says in

  1517. verse 4.

1518. He says, but I have this

1519. against you, that you have

1520. abandoned the love that you

  1521. had at first.

1522. Here is a church which is

  1523. absolutely rock solid in

  1524. theology and doctrine.

1525. They love God's word, but

  1526. unfortunately, rock solid

  1527. theology can sometimes lead

1528. to ice cold hearts and

  1529. cold hearted worship.

1530. Listen to what Tim Chester

  1531. writes.

1532. He says, we can pride

1533. ourselves on not letting our

1534. theology, sorry, I just lost

  1535. my place.

1536. We can pride ourselves on not

  1537. letting our theology be

1538. infected by worldly ideas, but

1539. all the time our lives and

1540. hearts can be infected by

  1541. worldly priorities, living for

1542. the treasure of earth, seeking

  1543. our security in that.

1544. We may be strong on doctrine

1545. and moral orthodoxy, but are

1546. our churches characterized by a

1547. passionate love for Jesus and

  1548. his people?

  1549. That's an amazing, amazing

  1550. thought.

1551. We can be dead straight,

1552. absolutely spotless in terms of

1553. what we believe in our heads,

1554. but our hearts characterized by a

1555. passion for Christ and for his

  1556. people.

1557. Jesus says, Ephesian church, I

  1558. know your works.

  1559. I know your toil.

1560. I know your patient endurance.

  1561. I know that you've tested those

1562. who call themselves apostles and

  1563. teachers.

1564. You found them to be false.

1565. I know how you are enduring

1566. patiently and you're bearing up for

1567. my namesake, and you have not

1568. grown weary, but I have this

  1569. against you.

1570. You have abandoned the love that

  1571. you had at first.

1572. Now the church in Thyatira that

1573. Echo and Thea read to us, their

1574. problem is the opposite problem.

1575. They are a church which is

  1576. characterized by great love.

1577. He says here, I know your love

1578. and your works exceed what they

  1579. were at first.

1580. In other words, you love the

1581. people around you and you love me

1582. more now than you did previously.

1583. But this is what I have against

  1584. you.

1585. You welcome teachers into your

1586. church that promote sin, and you

1587. welcome teachers that don't tell

1588. you about the holiness of God and

1589. the purity of the church.

  1590. And Jesus rebukes them.

1591. He says, I've given them time to

  1592. repent, but they refuse.

1593. I will strike them, and all the

1594. churches will know that I am he

1595. who searches the heart and mind, and

1596. I will deal with them according to

  1597. their works.

1598. So we mustn't swing to the

1599. opposite side where we think

  1600. theology is bad.

  1601. Theology is just academic.

1602. What really counts is just if we

1603. love people and love God.

1604. Because that's where Thyatira was,

1605. and God says, no, that's not good

  1606. either.

1607. Friends, if the history of the church

1608. tells us anything, it's that when

1609. churches abandon God's word and

1610. doctrine, it's only a matter of time

1611. before that church and that city no

  1612. longer knows God.

1613. And so if we want our future

1614. generations in Hong Kong to know God

1615. and to love Him, we dare not abandon

  1616. the Scriptures.

1617. We mustn't do what Thyatira did, the way

  1618. we abandon the Scriptures.

1619. No, no, let's not swing to the

  1620. opposite side.

1621. And yet, we cannot be a church that

1622. just knows God's word, but it hasn't

1623. dropped from our heads to our hearts.

1624. Friends, FG, who Jesus is, and the

1625. message of the gospel, that you and I,

1626. because of our sin, because of God's

1627. righteous holiness, because of His

1628. justice, you and I deserve to be

1629. condemned to hell for all eternity.

1630. And God would be absolutely just to do

  1631. such a thing.

1632. But instead of that, Jesus took our

  1633. condemnation in our place.

1634. Where our destiny was death, it's now

  1635. life.

1636. Where our future was condemnation, it's

  1637. now reconciliation.

1638. Where once our fate was wrath and

1639. judgment, it's now that we are called

1640. sons and daughters of God.

1641. Friends, if that magnificent truth of

1642. the gospel is inside our heads, but it

  1643. doesn't penetrate our hearts, what's the

  1644. point?

  1645. What's the point?

1646. Because being a Christian is not only

1647. somebody who has a knowledge about

1648. Jesus, it's someone who loves God and

1649. walks with Him by faith.

  1650. See, friends, a Christian isn't just

1651. someone who believes that Jesus is God.

  1652. That's important, but that's not enough.

1653. Even the devil believes that Jesus is

  1654. God.

1655. A Christian is not just someone who

1656. believes that the Bible is true.

1657. You do need to do that, but that's not

  1658. enough.

1659. Even the devil knows that the Bible is

  1660. true.

1661. Friends, a Christian is someone who's come

1662. to see that Jesus is God.

1663. That Jesus is our only hope in life and

  1664. death.

1665. That outside of Christ, there is not one

  1666. single drop of salvation.

1667. And therefore, someone who has thrown

1668. themselves at the mercy of Jesus.

1669. But in addition to that, a Christian is

1670. someone who is living their life loving

1671. Christ, trusting Christ, and obeying

1672. Christ because of the gospel.

1673. Friends, the history of the church tells us

1674. that there are hundreds of churches, and

1675. unfortunately, it's the church leaders'

1676. fault, that we get 100% on a theological

  1677. exam.

1678. Every dot, every tittle, be able to answer

  1679. every question perfectly.

1680. But our hearts are not filled with love for

1681. either Christ or one another.

1682. And so what's the point?

  1683. What's the point?

1684. Now let me ask you this question.

1685. What do churches like that generally look

  1686. like?

  1687. What's the feeling?

1688. What does it feel like on the ground?

1689. What does it look like when you come in to

  1690. a church on Sunday?

1691. Tell you what it feels like.

1692. It feels like arrogance on one hand.

1693. We know our stuff better than the church

  1694. down the road.

1695. But it also feels like judgmentalism, doesn't

  1696. it?

1697. It feels like that church down the road, if

1698. only they knew things as well as we did.

1699. If only they knew the Greek and the Hebrew

1700. and if only they could really know what was

  1701. going on.

1702. Or, sometimes churches like that, there's

1703. fighting inside and there's judgmentalism

1704. and the pastor can look down at his people

1705. and think, I wish these people knew their

  1706. Bibles better.

1707. If only they could get their act together.

1708. Friends, how many times have we heard of

1709. one church attacking another church because

  1710. they're not theologically perfect?

1711. And this is particularly relevant for us

1712. because at Watermark, our elders are

1713. passionate about not neglecting the truth of

  1714. God's Word.

1715. We never want to be a church which is

1716. careless about the way we handle God's

  1717. Word.

1718. We want to be a church which knows God's

1719. Word and is changed by it and is radically

1720. committed to it, even in the face of

  1721. opposition.

1722. We want to be a church which encounters God

1723. and His Word and has God speaking to us from

1724. His Word and are submitting to it and

  1725. surrendering to it.

1726. But friends, if we are absolutely doctrinally

1727. precise and theologically as straight as an

1728. arrow, but our hearts are not moved by love for

1729. Christ, it's all in vain.

1730. And so remember how Jesus comes to the

1731. religious leaders one day and He says,

1732. You search the Scriptures because you think

1733. that in them you will find eternal life.

1734. And don't you realize that they bear witness

  1735. about Me?

1736. The Scriptures are there to bring you to Me,

1737. says Jesus, to show you the wonder of

1738. Christ and who He is.

1739. I've got a hero called Ray Ortlund and he's

1740. becoming a hero of mine.

1741. He's just handed over his church actually in

1742. America and he wrote a book many years ago.

1743. The book is called The Three Priorities for

  1744. a Strong Church.

1745. Now when I see a book like that, I want to

  1746. read it, right?

1747. Because I want Watermark to be a strong

  1748. church.

1749. The Three Priorities for a Strong Church.

1750. What do you think those priorities are?

1751. He says, number one, you love Christ.

1752. Number two, you love one another.

1753. Number three, you love the world out there that is

1754. dying because they do not know Christ.

1755. Friends, more important than getting every perfect

1756. thing right and understanding every verse

1757. perfectly, are we a church that loves Christ,

1758. that loves one another and loves the city in which

1759. we live and is dying because it does not know

  1760. Jesus?

1761. Tim Keller says, God doesn't just want us to know and

1762. obey him as a citizen obeys a king or merely follow him as

  1763. sheep follow a shepherd.

1764. He wants us to know him and love him as a wife loves her

  1765. husband.

1766. You see, friends, to be a Christian is not just to have

  1767. knowledge about Jesus.

1768. It's to love him and to walk with him by faith.

1769. And that's what Jesus is calling this Ephesian church to.

1770. In the midst of all the imperial cults, in the midst of the

1771. persecution, in the midst of the challenges that they're facing,

1772. he says, will you love me?

  1773. Will you trust me?

  1774. Will you obey me?

1775. Domitian, the emperor, would say, Caesar is Lord.

1776. The Christians weren't just to know academically that Jesus

1777. were Lord, but to love him as Lord.

1778. And still, friends, today in our world, the devil will come to

1779. us and say, Watermark, you can love Jesus, just also love

  1780. money as well.

1781. You can love Jesus, just love this as well.

1782. You can love Jesus, just love this as well.

1783. The devil would come to us and say that we are mature Christians if

1784. our theology is all straight, even if we're seduced by other

  1785. loves.

  1786. Do we love Christ?

1787. Do we love one another?

1788. Do we love the city in which we lived?

1789. Now, as we come towards the end, look at what Jesus says in verse

  1790. 5.

  1791. Jesus says this.

1792. He says, remember therefore from where you have fallen.

1793. Repent and do the works that you did at first.

1794. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its

  1795. place, unless you repent.

1796. Now, remember what we said earlier.

1797. Jesus, when he's talking about a lampstand, is not talking about an

1798. Ikea lampstand, he's talking about this Jewish menorah, right?

1799. And there's candles on top.

1800. But in the ancient world, the candles didn't rely on wax.

1801. They were full of oil.

1802. And so the oil would burn and keep the candle going.

1803. And if you wanted the candles to keep them going, you had to top up

  1804. the oil.

1805. Remember, Jesus tells a parable about some people that didn't bring

1806. enough oil and so their lamps go out because they weren't prepared.

  1807. They weren't ready.

1808. Well, in the Bible, oil is almost always a symbol of the Holy Spirit.

1809. So what's Jesus saying here?

1810. Jesus is saying that when he says, I'll remove your lampstand, he's

1811. talking about closing down the church.

1812. But how is he going to do it?

1813. He's not going to do it by just magically closing down the meetings.

1814. Jesus is not going to close down the church by sending a meteor to, you

1815. know, smash our building or something.

1816. How does Jesus close down churches?

1817. How does he snuff out the lampstand?

  1818. He removes the oil.

1819. He takes the Holy Spirit from the church.

1820. And so if we just go through the motions until eventually we die out.

1821. Friends, the scary thing is that you don't even realize it's happened until

1822. years down the road, there's no more life left in the church.

1823. Friends, all around the world, there are hundreds of churches, thousands of

1824. churches which gather each week in church buildings.

1825. And they sing some songs and they listen to a message.

1826. But the Holy Spirit is not there.

1827. There is no life there.

1828. There is no light there.

1829. And there is no church there.

1830. And Christ is not there because they have long since forgotten their first love.

  1831. Their first love.

1832. And so the question is, what do we do about this?

1833. Well, Jesus says something very interesting.

  1834. Look at verse 5.

1835. He actually says it twice.

1836. He calls this church, which is a pillar of theological and doctrinal strength, he calls

  1837. them to repent.

1838. Look at how he says it.

1839. Remember therefore from where you have fallen, repent and do the works that you did at first.

1840. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place unless you repent.

1841. And Jesus calls us to repent of our lovelessness.

1842. Now that's interesting because we typically think that if you don't, we think of love as

1843. an emotion that you feel.

1844. You either love something or you don't.

1845. Love is like a ditch.

1846. You fall into it and you fall out of it, right?

  1847. Not really.

1848. But that's how we typically think of love.

1849. If I love something, great.

  1850. If I don't, there's not much I can do about it.

  1851. It's just a feeling.

  1852. It's an emotion.

1853. But actually Jesus says, I want you to repent of your lovelessness.

1854. How do you repent of losing and abandoning our first love?

1855. Well, sorry, I'm making a noise of this thing.

  1856. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

  1857. Anyway, we're almost done.

1858. Let me tell you a story.

  1859. Sorry.

1860. About a year, a year and a half ago, Claire and I were going for a walk up the peak.

1861. And we're going for a walk on the ring road.

1862. And Claire says to me, how's our marriage doing?

1863. Now, I think you know what's happening, right?

1864. When Claire asks that question, she's not asking because she doesn't know.

1865. She does know what's going on.

1866. It's a kind of way of saying, our marriage sucks at the moment, doesn't it?

  1867. Right?

1868. And so I know that Claire was saying that for two reasons.

1869. One, because after being married for 10 years, I know what she means when she says, how's our marriage doing?

1870. But secondly, because I knew how our marriage was doing.

1871. And it wasn't at its best.

  1872. It wasn't sweet.

1873. It wasn't full of life and joy.

1874. It felt like hard work.

1875. And so we'd both noticed this.

1876. And so we go for this walk.

1877. And Claire brings it up.

1878. Which, can I be honest, wasn't easy.

  1879. We talked through it.

1880. It wasn't an easy conversation.

1881. But it was a good conversation.

1882. And so one of the things Claire says to me in that conversation is she says, Kevin, I see the way that you're serving around the house.

1883. I see the way that you wash the dishes.

1884. I see the way that you try and come home and have dinner with the kids.

1885. I see the way that you're helping and you're serving.

1886. And I'm grateful for all those things.

  1887. But if I'm honest, I don't sense that there's much tenderness.

  1888. I don't sense there's much gentleness.

1889. You're doing all the right things.

1890. But it feels like there's lacking this tenderness, this sweetness, this love in your actions.

1891. You're going through the motions because that's what a good husband does.

1892. But it doesn't feel like your heart is really in it.

1893. Now, to be honest, she was absolutely right.

1894. And I think I knew exactly what she meant because we had recently moved to Hong Kong about four or five months before that.

1895. And my heart and my mind was so focused on the job and the work and what am I trying to not mess everything up that actually something else, in other words, the job, had captured my attention and my heart.

1896. And so even while I'm at home and I'm trying to do the right things, my mind is elsewhere and my heart is elsewhere.

1897. In other words, over a matter of time, Claire was no longer first in my heart.

1898. Something else had captured my heart's affection and my heart's attention.

1899. Something else had become first in my life.

1900. And so even though I'm trying to go through the motions, actually, while I'm trying to serve at home and I wash the dishes and the kids and Claire's saying, hey, can you make sure you're home for dinner?

1901. Part of my heart is getting frustrated because I'm thinking, you're taking me away from what's actually first in my heart.

1902. And so what did my wife need in that moment?

1903. Well, what is going to bring back the sweetness?

1904. What is going to bring back the joy and the tenderness?

1905. What is going to revive our marriage again?

1906. What Claire needed was firstly for me not to be defensive.

  1907. Okay, that's a good start.

1908. She needed for me to admit where she was right and where I was wrong.

1909. But what she actually needed was for me to go away and repent.

1910. She needed me to go away and do business with God and say, God, you're right.

  1911. She's right.

  1912. God, I'm sorry.

1913. Something else has become first in my heart.

1914. And I want to put that right.

1915. She needed me to not just go through the motions and stir up my love.

1916. She needed me to repent.

1917. Friends, can I say repentance always feels like death because it requires us that we humble ourselves and admit that we're wrong.

1918. But repentance always, always leads to life.

1919. And Jesus calls the Ephesian church and he calls us today to put right our lovelessness.

1920. Not by just stirring up our emotions.

1921. Not by doubling down and working twice as hard.

1922. Not by being twice as dedicated.

  1923. But by repenting.

1924. By coming to him and saying, Christ, something else has captured my heart's attention.

1925. Something else is first and foremost in my heart.

1926. Something else has come before you.

1927. By coming to him and returning to him and making him first in our lives again.

1928. And so how do we do that?

1929. How do we turn to Christ in faith and repentance?

1930. In one of his final letters in the New Testament, the Apostle John writes and he says this.

1931. This is how we know what love is.

1932. Not that we love God, but that he loved us.

1933. And he sent his son to be an atoning sacrifice.

1934. Indeed, we love because he first loved us.

1935. Friends, when we had done nothing right.

1936. When all we had done to God is scorned him and mocked at him and laughed at him and rejected him.

1937. Jesus came to us in profound love.

1938. For God so loved the world, you and I, that he gave his only begotten son.

1939. That we can be welcomed in back to his family, his children again.

1940. That he might pour his love into our hearts and bring us back to him together.

1941. Jesus comes to us and says,

1942. Friends, turn away from the things that have captured your heart's attention.

1943. I have this and this is what I'm calling you to.

1944. Return to your first love.

1945. Return to your first love.

1946. Come and love me again.

  1947. Repent.

  1948. Come to me again.

1949. Come and love me again.
