  1. Will you join me as we pray together? If you don't know me, by the way, my name is Kevin, and we're going to pray together as a church, so won't you join me in this time of prayer?

  2. Oh great and glorious God, you are the sovereign, all-powerful, uncreated one, and we come to you this morning to worship you.

  3. Sovereign God, your glory knows no ends. Your majesty and your power are supreme. Your holiness and your worth are more than we can imagine. They are beyond description or words, God.

  4. God, we so need you to open the eyes of our hearts to see you, to see your glory.

  5. Father, as we come to you this morning and as we come to your word, we pray, God, won't you deliver us from small visions of you, from limited perspectives of your majesty and your beauty.

  6. Father, we confess that so often our lives are shaped by such a meager understanding of who you are and your glory, God.

  7. Oh sovereign God, this morning we've come to remind our hearts, to remind one another, to declare that you are worthy of our worship, worthy to receive glory and honor and power.

  8. God, this morning as we look at your word, Holy Spirit, won't you open the eyes of our hearts to see you?

  9. We so need you to do that, Lord.

  10. Heavenly Fathers, we come to your word now. We desperately want to hear you speaking to us.

  11. We come to your word because we want to meet with you, God.

  12. We want to encounter with you, the living God, this morning.

  13. Holy Spirit, we ask you to open our hearts to see you and encounter you in your word.

  14. Give us revelation. Give us fresh perspective.

  15. Give us hope. Give us faith. Give us courage.

  16. Father, just as this passage of scripture we're going to read would have given faith and courage to your people 2,000 years ago, facing great challenges in life, so we pray it will do the same for us.

  17. Holy Spirit, even now, soften our hearts to hear from you and to meet with you.

  18. Every one of us, God, soften our hearts now to receive your word, we pray.

  19. Father, we want to pray for our city again this morning and the people of Hong Kong.

  20. Lord, we pray that our city will see you in all its glory.

  21. When Oscar prayed for us, we pray for our city.

  22. God, come and revive our hearts, we pray.

  23. God, we want to pray for ourselves and we pray for our city.

  24. Be merciful to Hong Kong and help us as a city to see your majesty, to see the false gods that are before us, to see that all power structures in every city will one day bow the knee before you.

  25. God, we pray that you will give our city hope because its hope has been found in you.

  26. Father, we pray for the planned protests this afternoon.

  27. We pray for peace to prevail.

  28. We pray, God, for protesters to exercise restraint.

  29. We pray for police to maintain peace and not antagonize.

  30. We pray for rival groups and factions that have different views not to incite violence or aggression.

  31. We pray, God, for whatever protests happen in our city this afternoon, for them to be peaceful.

  32. Father, God, finally we pray for each and every one of us today, as well as those that couldn't make it.

  33. We pray that as we go into our week this week, those of us traveling, those of us staying in Hong Kong,

  34. that we will do so walking with you, in awe of you, humbled by your grace and your glory,

  35. and yet confident in your love and your mercy.

  36. God, may each day be lived for the praise of your name.

  37. Whether we are making a business deal, looking for work, going for interviews,

  38. carrying out the most menial of tasks, God, be glorified in our words and our deeds, we pray.

  39. We pray these things in your sovereign, eternal, holy, and almighty name.

  40. Amen. Amen.

  41. Victoria's going to come and read Revelation chapter 4 to us.

    Revelation 4 chapter mention

  42. Let's listen up.

  43. The scripture reading comes from Revelation chapter 4.

    Revelation 4 chapter mention

  44. Please follow along in your bulletins or on the screen.

  45. After this, I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven,

  46. and the first voice, which I had heard speaking to me like a trumpet, said,

  47. Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.

  48. At once I was in the spirit, and behold, a throne stood in heaven, with one seated on the throne.

  49. And he who sat there had the appearance of Jesper and Carnelian,

  50. and around the throne was a rainbow that had the appearance of an emerald.

  51. Around the throne were twenty-four thrones,

  52. and seated on the thrones were twenty-four elders,

  53. clothed in white garments, with golden crowns on their heads.

  54. From the throne came fleshes of lightning, and rumblings and peals of thunder.

  55. And before the throne were burning seven torches of fire,

  56. which are the seven spirits of God.

  57. And before the throne, there was, as it were, a sea of glass like crystal.

  58. And around the throne, on each side of the throne,

  59. are four living creatures, full of eyes in front and behind.

  60. The first living creature, like a lion.

  61. The second living creature, like an ox.

  62. The third living creature, with the face of a man.

  63. And the fourth living creature, like an eagle in flight.

  64. And the four living creatures, each of them with six wings,

  65. are full of eyes all around and within.

  66. And day and night, they never cease to say,

  67. Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty,

  68. who was and is and is to come.

  69. And whenever the living creatures give glory and honor

  70. and thanks to him who is seated on the throne,

  71. who lives forever and ever,

  72. the twenty-four elders fall down before him,

  73. who was seated on the throne,

  74. and worship him, who lives forever and ever.

  75. They cast their crowns before the throne,

  76. saying,

  77. Worthy are you, our Lord and God,

  78. to receive glory and honor and power.

  79. For you created all things,

  80. and by your will they existed and were created.

  81. This is the word of God.

  82. Great.

  83. Thank you, Victoria.

  84. When you read the newspaper,

  85. which these days isn't found on paper,

  86. when you read the news,

  87. what do you see?

  88. Who's governing the world?

  89. Who's holding the power of the world?

  90. Who can you trust?

  91. And maybe another question is,

  92. the story that is our lives,

  93. where does that story end?

  94. How does that story end?

  95. Today we are looking at Revelation chapter 4,

    Revelation 4 chapter mention

  96. as Victoria read it to us.

  97. And over the last two weeks,

  98. we've been diving into the book of Revelation,

  99. and we've looked at Jesus' letter

  100. to the seven churches in Asia Minor province,

  101. and we saw that each one of these churches

  102. is struggling,

  103. either with persecution and oppression,

  104. or they are tempted to give in to compromise

  105. and becoming just like the cultures around them.

  106. And what we're going to see from chapter 6 onwards

  107. is that the difficulties and the challenges

  108. that the churches and the Christians face

  109. are not about to come to any sort of end.

  110. They're going to continue.

  111. In fact, the series we called is

  112. From the Cross to the Throne,

  113. and it's kind of a picture of how

  114. the entire story of the church,

  115. from the time Jesus died and rose again

  116. until the time he comes back,

  117. this is the book of Revelation.

  118. And the challenges that they face

  119. are the challenges that we're going to face.

  120. And so Jesus writes this book to these churches

  121. because what do they need?

  122. These churches that are facing difficulty,

  123. they don't just need a prep talk.

  124. They don't just need management advice

  125. of what to do,

  126. how to manage the churches through difficulty.

  127. They don't just need three tips

  128. on how to grow your church.

  129. What they need to do is have concrete answers

  130. to the biggest and the most pressing questions of life.

  131. Who's governing the world?

  132. Who can you trust?

  133. Who holds the power,

  134. and how does it all end?

  135. And if we think about it,

  136. these are actually questions

  137. that we in our day and age ask ourselves,

  138. especially in difficult times,

  139. like our city is facing,

  140. in economic trade wars,

  141. when our city is going through turmoil and challenges,

  142. in political uncertainty,

  143. who can we trust?

  144. Who can we hold on to?

  145. Who's holding the power?

  146. Now, to John's original recipients of this letter,

  147. when they read the metaphorical newspapers of their day,

  148. the answer was pretty clear.

  149. They saw the pomp and the power of Rome

  150. in the Roman Empire,

  151. and the answer was clear.

  152. Rome holds the power.

  153. Rome holds authority.

  154. Rome is governing the world,

  155. and those aligned with Rome and its agenda

  156. are the ones that win in the end.

  157. Throughout the Roman Empire,

  158. the early Christians would see the Roman standard,

  159. that banner that they would hold up

  160. as they go into war,

  161. and they would have the emblem of the Roman Empire,

  162. which was an eagle with outspread arms on it,

  163. kind of like the American seal, I guess.

  164. And everywhere they went,

  165. they would see this Roman seal

  166. demonstrating its power and its authority.

  167. As they walked around the city,

  168. they would see these magisterial,

  169. these colossal buildings,

  170. which were made of marble,

  171. which were meant to demonstrate

  172. that Rome will stand forever.

  173. They're these imposing buildings.

  174. Rome's propaganda campaign

  175. was a well-oiled machine,

  176. reminding the citizens daily

  177. who it was that was governing the world,

  178. and where their peace and their security

  179. and their hope lay.

  180. You know, archaeologists have found recently

  181. in the city of Ephesus,

  182. on one of the shop houses,

  183. there's carved graffiti

  184. into one of the stone buildings,

  185. and it says this.

  186. It says,

  187. Rome, your power will never end.

  188. And the question is,

  189. who was the custodian of this power?

  190. Who was the one that governed it

  191. and held it in his hands?

  192. It was the emperor, right?

  193. Everybody knew.

  194. The emperor was the one who held this power.

  195. Whenever the emperor won some battle,

  196. they would march those that they defeated

  197. through the streets of the city

  198. in a triumphal procession.

  199. And so the emperor would go first

  200. if it was near Rome,

  201. and then the Roman soldiers would follow,

  202. and then the captives,

  203. tied up in chains,

  204. would follow behind,

  205. followed lastly by the spoils of war.

  206. And as the emperor entered the streets,

  207. the citizens lining the streets

  208. would shout out,

  209. worthy are you,

  210. worthy are you,

  211. our Lord and our God.

  212. And so this is what it felt to live,

  213. this is what it felt like

  214. to live in the Roman Empire.

  215. Now for the Christians

  216. in these young churches,

  217. this meant big questions.

  218. Where did their fate lie?

  219. Was it tied up with Rome and the emperor?

  220. Did Domitian hold their future in his hands?

  221. What would happen if they rebelled

  222. against the all-powerful Roman Empire?

  223. Is God really in control

  224. when it seems like Rome is the one

  225. that's running the world?

  226. Friends, for those of us

  227. that are followers of Jesus

  228. in this great city of ours,

  229. these are questions

  230. that we have to grapple with as well.

  231. Especially in times

  232. of such turmoil and difficulty.

  233. Who's controlling our future?

  234. How safe is our future?

  235. What happens if we go against

  236. the tide of our culture

  237. and swim upstream?

  238. Is our life in danger?

  239. How's the story all gonna end?

  240. In the Old Testament,

  241. there's this amazing story

  242. because the king of Syria

  243. wants to attack the nation of Israel.

  244. And so he makes these plans

  245. with his generals and his leaders.

  246. But the problem is

  247. whenever he makes these plans

  248. and they decide which way

  249. they're gonna attack Israel,

  250. God tells the king of Syria's plans

  251. to Elisha the prophet.

  252. And Elisha goes and tells

  253. the king of Israel.

  254. And so Syria kind of get

  255. the army together

  256. and they want the element

  257. of surprise

  258. and they say,

  259. they go this way

  260. and they find Israel's

  261. not there anymore.

  262. They've anticipated their attack.

  263. And so the next day

  264. they'll try something else

  265. and Israel's not there

  266. because they've anticipated

  267. their attack.

  268. And so eventually

  269. the king of Syria

  270. is fed up with this

  271. and he says to his generals,

  272. one of you's a mole.

  273. One of you's telling them

  274. our secrets.

  275. Who is it?

  276. And one guy says,

  277. listen,

  278. none of us are giving away

  279. our secrets,

  280. but Elisha is a prophet

  281. and God speaks to him.

  282. God gives away our secrets.

  283. And so the king says,

  284. okay,

  285. this is what we're gonna do.

  286. Tonight,

  287. we're gonna go

  288. and circle Elisha's house

  289. and threaten him

  290. and if he doesn't listen,

  291. we're gonna sort him out

  292. and then Elisha

  293. will be out the way

  294. and then we can attack Israel.

  295. And so that night,

  296. Syria gets all his armies

  297. and his chariots

  298. and he goes to the town

  299. where Elisha lives

  300. and he circles the entire town

  301. with horses and chariots.

  302. And in the morning,

  303. Elisha's servant wakes up,

  304. he opens the front door

  305. and he gets the fright

  306. of his life

  307. because the whole town

  308. is just surrounded

  309. by Syrian chariots

  310. and horses.

  311. And so he closes the door,

  312. he goes inside

  313. and he says,

  314. master,

  315. master,

  316. they've surrounded us.

  317. What shall we do?

  318. And Elisha says,

  319. do not be afraid

  320. for those that are with us

  321. are more than those

  322. that are with them.

  323. Okay?

  324. And the servant says,

  325. what do you mean?

  326. And then Elisha prays

  327. and he says,

  328. O Lord God,

  329. open his eyes

  330. that he may see.

  331. And the Lord opens

  332. the eyes of the servant

  333. spiritually

  334. and he sees

  335. and the Bible says this,

  336. he says,

  337. he saw and behold,

  338. the mountain was full of horses

  339. and chariots of fire

  340. all around.

  341. And so God opens his eyes

  342. and he sees spiritually

  343. that there are angels

  344. all around

  345. on the hills of the mountains

  346. surrounding the town

  347. and that actually

  348. there are more angels,

  349. more warriors

  350. with Elisha and his servant

  351. than with the enemy.

  352. In Revelation chapter 4,

    Revelation 4 chapter mention

  353. John is wanting to show us,

  354. he's wanting us

  355. to open our eyes

  356. and to behold

  357. and to see

  358. what's really going on.

  359. To behold something

  360. means to see something

  361. in such a way

  362. that it captures your heart

  363. and your attention.

  364. And this is what Jesus wants

  365. for these young churches

  366. in the Roman Empire

  367. and this is what he wants

  368. for us.

  369. He wants the eyes

  370. of our hearts

  371. to be opened

  372. to see what's going on

  373. in the spiritual realm

  374. so that when the threats

  375. and the challenges

  376. and the difficulty

  377. come our way,

  378. when fear and anxiety

  379. come knocking at our door,

  380. he wants us to behold

  381. to see what's really going on

  382. so that we can have

  383. the correct perspective

  384. in life.

  385. And that's what Revelation chapter 4

    Revelation 4 chapter mention

  386. is all about.

  387. John is showing us

  388. a different reality.

  389. Now that doesn't mean

  390. that our current view

  391. of the world is wrong.

  392. You know,

  393. when the servant

  394. opened the door

  395. and saw the chariots,

  396. it wasn't like

  397. they weren't there

  398. and, you know,

  399. seen a mirage

  400. or an image.

  401. They really were there

  402. but that wasn't

  403. the complete picture.

  404. That was only half

  405. the picture.

  406. God opens his eyes

  407. to see the full reality

  408. of what's going on

  409. and that's what

  410. Revelation chapter 4

    Revelation 4 chapter mention

  411. is all about.

  412. Jesus wants us

  413. to see and to view

  414. our world

  415. with a fuller picture

  416. and he gives

  417. these early Christians

  418. and he gives us

  419. a vision of what's

  420. really going on

  421. in the world

  422. so that we can

  423. live our lives

  424. as God calls us to

  425. rather than being

  426. subject to fear

  427. and worry.

  428. Okay,

  429. does that make sense?

  430. Okay,

  431. so all that

  432. by way of introduction.

  433. Let's see what's

  434. going on here.

  435. So,

  436. if you've got your

  437. bulletin or your Bible,

  438. let's look at

  439. Revelation chapter 4.

    Revelation 4 chapter mention

  440. Look at verse 2

  441. with me.

  442. John writes this.

  443. It says,

  444. I saw this vision

  445. and at once

  446. I was in the spirit

  447. and behold,

  448. a throne stood in heaven

  449. with one seated

  450. on the throne

  451. and he who sat there

  452. had the appearance

  453. of jasper and cornelian.

  454. That's precious jewels

  455. and around the throne

  456. was a rainbow

  457. that had the appearance

  458. of an emerald.

  459. Around the throne

  460. were also 24 thrones

  461. and seated on these thrones

  462. were 24 elders.

  463. Okay,

  464. we sang about that earlier.

  465. Clothed in white garments

  466. with golden crowns

  467. on their heads

  468. and from the throne

  469. came flashes of lightning

  470. and rumblings

  471. and peals of thunder

  472. and before the throne

  473. were burning

  474. seven torches of fire

  475. which are the seven

  476. spirits of God

  477. and before the throne

  478. there was,

  479. as it were,

  480. a sea of glass

  481. like crystal.

  482. Friends,

  483. what is it that the early church

  484. in the midst

  485. of the Roman Empire

  486. and what is it

  487. that followers of Jesus today

  488. in the midst of

  489. an ever-changing,

  490. increasingly secular world,

  491. what is it that we need

  492. to see

  493. or need to behold?

  494. Jesus invites John

  495. to see a picture

  496. of God on the throne

  497. and notice that

  498. in this vision

  499. that John has,

  500. God in his reign

  501. is the center

  502. of everything.

  503. Everything revolves

  504. around him.

  505. God in his throne

  506. is at the center

  507. of the image,

  508. center of the vision

  509. because everything

  510. in all of creation

  511. revolves around him.

  512. We are not

  513. the center of creation.

  514. God's church

  515. is not the center

  516. of creation.

  517. God doesn't exist

  518. for the praise

  519. of our name.

  520. God doesn't exist

  521. for the praise

  522. and the advance

  523. of his church.

  524. Everything

  525. in all creation,

  526. including his church,

  527. Christians,

  528. everything revolves around

  529. and centers around

  530. he who is on the throne.

  531. And notice how little

  532. John describes God.

  533. What is the description

  534. that he gives of him?

  535. He doesn't actually

  536. describe him very much.

  537. He just says

  538. his appearance

  539. was like the brilliance

  540. of Jasper

  541. and the richness

  542. of Cornelian,

  543. these precious jewels.

  544. And around the throne

  545. there's this rainbow,

  546. this emerald green rainbow.

  547. What John is trying

  548. to communicate here

  549. is that what he saw

  550. took his breath away

  551. and that there aren't

  552. really words

  553. to describe

  554. what he saw.

  555. He just saw

  556. something of such brilliance

  557. that he doesn't have

  558. the words

  559. to describe it.

  560. I found a picture online

  561. of one artist's impression.

  562. Let's see something

  563. like that, right?

  564. And John also sees

  565. what he describes

  566. as these flashes

  567. of lightnings

  568. and rumblings

  569. and peals of thunder,

  570. which is to say

  571. that the throne of God

  572. was crackling

  573. and snapping

  574. with power

  575. and authority.

  576. Think of a nuclear

  577. power plant

  578. that is going

  579. into overdrive,

  580. about going

  581. to meltdown,

  582. this kind of

  583. crackling,

  584. snappling,

  585. fizzing with power

  586. and authority.

  587. I think that's kind of

  588. what John is trying

  589. to describe.

  590. There's something

  591. fearsome,

  592. something extraordinarily

  593. awesome

  594. and frightening

  595. about it,

  596. such that when you

  597. see this throne

  598. and God in the throne,

  599. it causes you

  600. to fall down

  601. on your knees.

  602. And yet,

  603. for all its power,

  604. for all its authority,

  605. for all its

  606. snapping,

  607. cracking power,

  608. there's something

  609. distinctively

  610. calm about it.

  611. Because look at

  612. verse 6.

  613. Verse 6 says,

  614. Before the throne,

  615. there was,

  616. as it were,

  617. a sea of glass

  618. like crystal.

  619. In the book

  620. of Revelation,

  621. the sea is always

  622. a picture of chaos

  623. and upheaval.

  624. Think of the sea

  625. in the midst

  626. of a storm.

  627. You've got waves

  628. crashing all over you.

  629. One minute,

  630. the waves are coming

  631. from this side.

  632. The next minute,

  633. the waves are coming

  634. from the other side.

  635. And there's just

  636. this chaos

  637. and this upheaval.

  638. And you never know

  639. where it's going

  640. to come from next.

  641. Sometimes that feels

  642. a little bit

  643. like our world.

  644. there's something

  645. going on there

  646. and just when you

  647. think you've got

  648. your head around it,

  649. something emerges

  650. on this side

  651. and it's just

  652. absolute chaos

  653. and upheaval,

  654. right?

  655. The sea is always

  656. a picture of this

  657. chaos in the world.

  658. But,

  659. and that,

  660. but notice

  661. what's happening

  662. before the throne here.

  663. The sea

  664. is at the feet

  665. of the one

  666. who's seated

  667. on the throne

  668. and it's as still

  669. as glass.

  670. Have you ever

  671. been on the water,

  672. either on the sea

  673. or on a lake

  674. and it's so still

  675. it looks like glass.

  676. It's like the,

  677. the bank is mirrored

  678. on the other side.

  679. It looks like a mirror.

  680. Have you ever

  681. seen that before?

  682. It's a picture

  683. of absolute serenity

  684. and calmness.

  685. What's John

  686. saying here?

  687. He's saying,

  688. before at the feet

  689. of the one

  690. who sits on the throne,

  691. all the chaos,

  692. all the upheaval,

  693. everything that doesn't

  694. make sense

  695. and is difficult

  696. in our world,

  697. suddenly is found

  698. calm

  699. and peaceful

  700. and serene.

  701. And then look

  702. at verse 4.

  703. It says,

  704. around the throne

  705. are these 24

  706. smaller thrones

  707. upon which are

  708. seated 24 elders.

  709. Now,

  710. what's up with

  711. the 24 elders

  712. that we sang

  713. about earlier?

  714. Well,

  715. it's symbolic

  716. of these two

  717. groups of people.

  718. In the Old Testament,

  719. who are the 12

  720. most important people?

  721. Okay,

  722. in the New Testament,

  723. it's the 12 disciples,

  724. the 12 that become

  725. the apostles.

  726. Ephesians tell us

  727. that the church

  728. is built on the work

  729. of the 12 apostles.

  730. In the Old Testament,

  731. the 12 most important

  732. people are the patriarchs.

  733. Remember Judah

  734. and Simeon

  735. and Levi

  736. and Asher

  737. and Dan

  738. and these are

  739. the 12 sons

  740. of Israel.

  741. And the 12 patriarchs,

  742. they form 12 tribes

  743. and they are

  744. kind of the forefathers,

  745. the foundation

  746. of the nation

  747. of Israel.

  748. And so,

  749. in John's vision,

  750. there are these

  751. 24 elders

  752. which are the 12 patriarchs

  753. of the Old Testament,

  754. the 12 apostles

  755. of the New Testament

  756. and it's symbolic

  757. of the fact that

  758. around the throne

  759. are all of God's people

  760. from all of the ages.

  761. The saints in the Old Testament

  762. that loved God

  763. and trusted Him

  764. and served Him

  765. and obeyed Him.

  766. The saints in the New Testament,

  767. those that loved God

  768. and trusted Him

  769. and served Him,

  770. obeyed Him.

  771. The entire realm

  772. of God's people

  773. in all the ages,

  774. those who lived by faith

  775. and gave themselves

  776. the honor and the glory of God,

  777. there they are

  778. around God's throne

  779. in the heavens.

  780. Okay?

  781. But notice John

  782. sees something else.

  783. Sorry,

  784. we're working our way

  785. through all this visionary

  786. and we're going to get

  787. to the implications

  788. in a minute.

  789. John sees something else.

  790. Look at what he says

  791. in verse 6b.

  792. He says,

  793. John tells us

  794. that around the throne

  795. are these four living creatures.

  796. One of them looks like a lion,

  797. one looks like an ox,

  798. one looks like a man,

  799. one looks like an eagle.

  800. Now,

  801. what on earth

  802. is going on here?

  803. Alright?

  804. This is kind of

  805. the interesting,

  806. weird part of Revelation.

  807. Right?

  808. The first two chapters

  809. is fine,

  810. but this is where

  811. we start to get interesting.

  812. What on earth

  813. is going on here?

  814. Well,

  815. think about it.

  816. John is drawing

  817. on the cultural symbols

  818. of power

  819. in his day.

  820. Think about this.

  821. Throughout history,

  822. what have empires

  823. and kingdoms,

  824. what symbols

  825. have they drawn on

  826. to demonstrate

  827. their power

  828. and their authority

  829. and their might?

  830. often,

  831. it's some kind

  832. of strong animal,

  833. some kind

  834. of beast,

  835. right?

  836. So,

  837. think about it.

  838. Those of you

  839. that are Americans,

  840. what is the image

  841. on the American

  842. coat of arms

  843. or the American

  844. presidential seal?

  845. Okay?

  846. The eagle,

  847. the bald eagle

  848. arms,

  849. wings spread out,

  850. right?

  851. Those of you

  852. that are British,

  853. Chris Thornton

  854. and one or two others,

  855. what is the symbol

  856. of England's power

  857. and the English Empire?

  858. The lion,

  859. right?

  860. Remember,

  861. England's soccer team

  862. is called

  863. the Three Lions

  864. and I think

  865. their coat of arms,

  866. sorry,

  867. you can't see it

  868. very clearly,

  869. it's a lion

  870. and a unicorn

  871. but typically,

  872. think of the lion

  873. of England,

  874. right?

  875. England,

  876. the British rugby team,

  877. the British Lions,

  878. okay?

  879. When you think

  880. of China,

  881. Chinese Empire,

  882. what symbol

  883. comes to mind?

  884. Sorry?

  885. A dragon,

  886. right?

  887. I think we've got

  888. a dragon.

  889. Yes,

  890. we've got a dragon,

  891. okay?

  892. Now,

  893. why do empires

  894. do this?

  895. Those that are

  896. symbols of their power

  897. and their authority

  898. typically draw on

  899. strong animals

  900. and beasts

  901. to provoke

  902. this imagery

  903. of power

  904. and authority.

  905. Now,

  906. some countries,

  907. we must admit,

  908. are a little bit lacking

  909. in the fear department,

  910. okay?

  911. South Africa,

  912. our coat of arms,

  913. we have a blue crane

  914. which is kind of

  915. like a stalk,

  916. okay?

  917. Australia,

  918. Australia's got

  919. a kangaroo.

  920. New Zealand,

  921. New Zealand's got

  922. a leaf,

  923. okay?

  924. I know,

  925. I know it's a fir

  926. tree or something

  927. special,

  928. it's a leaf,

  929. okay?

  930. I think the southern

  931. hemisphere,

  932. we need to work

  933. on our PR campaign,

  934. okay?

  935. The northern hemisphere,

  936. we've got it right here.

  937. Now,

  938. typically empires,

  939. those that are

  940. conquering lands

  941. and growing the empire,

  942. they use these symbols

  943. of power and strength

  944. to symbolize the authority

  945. and their might.

  946. And the Roman Empire

  947. did the same.

  948. What was the Roman Empire's seal?

  949. It was similar

  950. to the American seal.

  951. It's an eagle

  952. with outspread wings.

  953. And if you were to,

  954. what is the ultimate

  955. capital punishment

  956. in the Roman Empire?

  957. It was to be thrown

  958. to the emperor's lions,

  959. right?

  960. And for those

  961. in agrarian

  962. or farming communities,

  963. what was the ultimate

  964. symbol of strength

  965. and power

  966. and economic capital?

  967. It was the ox,

  968. right?

  969. Symbol of strength.

  970. So what's Jesus

  971. saying to the churches

  972. in the first century here?

  973. What's this image,

  974. what does John see

  975. when he sees this picture

  976. of these three animals

  977. or these three creatures

  978. around the throne?

  979. Everywhere around them,

  980. they're being told

  981. through symbols

  982. and imagery

  983. and sometimes direct force

  984. that Rome's power

  985. is invincible.

  986. It's eternal.

  987. Remember the graffiti?

  988. Rome,

  989. your power

  990. will never end.

  991. Jesus here

  992. is taking the powers

  993. and the symbols

  994. of authority

  995. and power

  996. and he's subverting them.

  997. He's turning them

  998. on his head

  999. and he's saying

  1000. that ultimately

  1001. they all

  1002. one day

  1003. bow down

  1004. to the one

1005. who is on the throne.

1006. And what will they do?

  1007. They won't just

  1008. begrudgingly bow down

  1009. because they've been conquered.

  1010. They won't be forced

  1011. to bow down.

  1012. One day

  1013. every single structure

  1014. of power

  1015. and authority

  1016. will willingly

  1017. and gladly

  1018. and joyfully

  1019. bow down

  1020. before the throne

  1021. of the one

  1022. in heaven

  1023. who rules

  1024. and reign

  1025. and will gladly

  1026. offer their worship

  1027. saying,

  1028. Worthy are you

  1029. our Lord and God

  1030. to receive glory

  1031. and honor

  1032. and power.

  1033. The emperor

  1034. is not worthy.

  1035. The emperor

  1036. doesn't hold authority.

  1037. You God alone

  1038. carry all authority.

  1039. Friends,

  1040. one day

  1041. every single

  1042. power authority

  1043. will bow down

  1044. to King Jesus.

  1045. And what's up

  1046. with the eyes?

  1047. Remember they've got

  1048. eyes all over

  1049. their bodies

  1050. all around.

  1051. It's picture language

  1052. symbolizing the fact

  1053. that they never

  1054. ever

  1055. ever

  1056. take their eyes

  1057. off the one

1058. who is on the throne.

1059. No matter where they are

  1060. their eyes are fixated

  1061. orientated

  1062. on the one

  1063. on the throne.

  1064. Look at verse 8b.

  1065. The living creatures

  1066. are full of eyes

  1067. all around

  1068. and day and night

  1069. they never

  1070. cease to say

  1071. Holy,

  1072. Holy,

  1073. Holy

  1074. is the Lord God

  1075. Almighty

  1076. who was and is

  1077. and is to come.

  1078. And again,

  1079. verse 11,

  1080. the elders

  1081. representing all

  1082. God's people

  1083. throughout the ages

  1084. are heroes

  1085. in the faith,

  1086. men and women

1087. that we look up to

  1088. and esteem,

  1089. those with simple faith

  1090. in some village

1091. in the middle of Africa

  1092. or Middle Asia

1093. that nobody's ever heard of

  1094. but their trust

  1095. in the faithfulness

  1096. of God.

  1097. All people

  1098. throughout the ages

  1099. will take off

  1100. their crowns,

  1101. their accolades,

  1102. everything that people

1103. esteem and honor them for,

  1104. symbols of glory

  1105. and honor.

1106. What do they do with them?

  1107. They throw them up

  1108. at the feet

  1109. of the one

  1110. who's on the throne

  1111. and they say,

  1112. worthy are you

  1113. our Lord and God

  1114. to receive glory

  1115. and honor

  1116. and power

  1117. for you created

  1118. all things

  1119. and by your will

  1120. they existed

  1121. and were created.

  1122. And friends,

  1123. this is in fact

  1124. the climax

  1125. of the entire passage.

  1126. The entire point

  1127. of this passage

1128. is that every power structure

  1129. will be overthrown.

  1130. And it's not just

1131. that Jesus wins in the end,

  1132. it's that all creation,

  1133. including the mysteries

  1134. of creation,

1135. those things we don't understand,

  1136. black holes

  1137. and creatures

1138. at the bottom of the sea,

  1139. all creation

  1140. was brought into existence

  1141. to proclaim

  1142. the excellencies

  1143. and the glory

  1144. and the majesty

  1145. and the awesomeness

1146. of the character of God.

1147. And what is his character?

1148. Well, look at what they say,

  1149. that he is holy.

  1150. Holy, holy, holy.

  1151. To be holy

1152. means to be set apart,

  1153. to be distinct

  1154. from what is ordinary

  1155. or common.

  1156. Friends,

  1157. there is nothing

  1158. and no one,

  1159. no power structure,

  1160. no emperor,

  1161. no military

  1162. or political

  1163. or cultural

  1164. or economic leader

  1165. in all creation

  1166. that comes close

  1167. to the authority

1168. of the one on the throne.

  1169. He is utterly

  1170. and entirely

  1171. in a league

  1172. of his own.

  1173. He is holy,

  1174. set apart from everything

  1175. and everyone.

  1176. He is sovereign

  1177. and almighty.

  1178. To be sovereign

  1179. means that you hold

  1180. ultimate authority.

  1181. There is nothing

  1182. above you.

  1183. There is nothing

  1184. and no one

  1185. that you answer to.

  1186. Everything exists

  1187. by his will

  1188. because he has chosen

1189. it to be that way.

  1190. I don't know

  1191. if you remember

  1192. in the Old Testament

1193. in the book of Daniel

  1194. there is this king

  1195. called Nebuchadnezzar.

  1196. Nebuchadnezzar

  1197. was the king

  1198. of the Babylonian empire

1199. and he was the greatest king

  1200. of the Babylonian empire

  1201. and he ruled

  1202. and he reigned

1203. and he was the one

  1204. that built Babylon's

  1205. hanging gardens,

1206. one of the seven wonders

  1207. of the ancient world.

  1208. He conquered empires.

  1209. He was incredible

  1210. and so towards

1211. the end of his life

1212. one day he walks out

  1213. onto the balcony

  1214. of his palace

  1215. and he overlooks

  1216. his empire

1217. and this is what he says.

1218. Is not this great Babylon

  1219. which I have built

  1220. by my mighty power

  1221. as a royal residence

  1222. and for the glory

  1223. of my majesty?

  1224. Okay.

1225. Well, God hears that prayer

  1226. and God decides

  1227. to teach him

  1228. that it is not

  1229. to the glory

  1230. of Nebuchadnezzar's name

  1231. that these things

  1232. came into existence

1233. and so God takes him

  1234. through a season

  1235. of humbling him

  1236. and at the end

  1237. of his life

  1238. Nebuchadnezzar

  1239. being humbled

  1240. by God

  1241. says this,

1242. I praise and honor him

  1243. whose dominion

  1244. is an everlasting dominion

  1245. whose kingdom endures

  1246. from generation

  1247. to generation.

  1248. All the inhabitants

  1249. of the earth

  1250. are counted

  1251. as nothing

  1252. compared to him

  1253. for he,

  1254. God,

  1255. does according

  1256. to his own will

  1257. amongst the hosts

  1258. of heaven

  1259. and none

  1260. can stay his hand

  1261. that means

  1262. hold back his hand

  1263. and none

  1264. can say to him

  1265. what have you done?

  1266. He is the eternal

  1267. sovereign

  1268. majestic God.

  1269. Remember Isaiah 46?

  1270. Babylon at the height

  1271. of its power

  1272. it's sovereign

  1273. it's the world's

  1274. superpower

  1275. its army

  1276. is just smashing

  1277. and demolishing

  1278. everything

  1279. and God says this,

  1280. I am God

1281. I declare from the end

  1282. I declare the end

  1283. from the beginning

  1284. from ancient times

  1285. things not yet done

  1286. what I say

  1287. says God

  1288. will happen

  1289. and my purposes

  1290. I will accomplish

  1291. them

  1292. why?

  1293. Because I am God

1294. and there is no other

  1295. I am God

  1296. and there is none

  1297. like me

  1298. friends

  1299. the angels

  1300. bow down

  1301. before God

  1302. and they say

  1303. holy, holy, holy

  1304. the Lord God

  1305. the sovereign

  1306. almighty

  1307. furthermore

  1308. they say

1309. he is the eternal one

  1310. Rome

  1311. your power

  1312. will never end

  1313. excuse me

  1314. getting political

  1315. Xi Jinping

  1316. your power

  1317. will never end

  1318. Vladimir Putin

  1319. your power

  1320. will never end

  1321. USA

  1322. the great greenback

  1323. the Renminbi

  1324. your power

  1325. will never end

  1326. friends

  1327. that's what

  1328. we are being told

  1329. there is one authority

  1330. there is one being

  1331. one power

  1332. one source of hope

  1333. and life

  1334. whose rule

  1335. and reign

  1336. has never

  1337. ever been threatened

  1338. from the beginning

  1339. of time

  1340. and whose rule

  1341. and reign

  1342. will never

  1343. ever be threatened

  1344. for all eternity

  1345. now the truth is

  1346. it doesn't always

  1347. feel like that

  1348. right

  1349. sometimes it follows

  1350. Jesus

  1351. we feel like

  1352. God

  1353. what's going on

  1354. remember Luke 24

  1355. Jesus disciples

  1356. are walking

  1357. from one place

  1358. to Emmaus

  1359. the heads

  1360. are hanging low

  1361. and one disciple

  1362. says to the other

  1363. man

  1364. we had really hoped

  1365. that that Jesus guy

1366. he would be the one

  1367. to deliver

  1368. and liberate Israel

  1369. I guess that's

  1370. not going to happen

  1371. remember in Egypt

  1372. in Exodus

  1373. God's people

  1374. God brings Moses

  1375. to come and deliver

  1376. them and save them

  1377. Pharaoh encounters

  1378. Moses

1379. and what does he do

  1380. things go from

  1381. bad to worse

  1382. he says

  1383. double your workload

  1384. remember God's people

  1385. sometimes

  1386. how they're arrested

  1387. thrown in jail

  1388. beaten

  1389. whipped

  1390. left for dead

  1391. remember how Christians

  1392. are being thrown

  1393. to the lions

  1394. and for the followers

  1395. of Jesus

  1396. in the first century

  1397. meeting at home

  1398. sometimes hiding away

  1399. from the authorities

  1400. at times

  1401. it must have felt

  1402. like God

  1403. where are you

  1404. we thought you

  1405. sovereign

  1406. what's up with this

  1407. where are you God

  1408. we've heard the stories

1409. and now you must have

  1410. met your match

  1411. God it's been a good run

  1412. you've done well

  1413. but finally Rome

  1414. has conquered you

  1415. friends to the angels

  1416. to us the angels

  1417. remind us

  1418. that his kingdom

  1419. is an eternal one

  1420. he is the one

  1421. who is

  1422. and who was

  1423. and is to come

  1424. forever

  1425. and ever

  1426. and ever

  1427. and ever

  1428. and ever

  1429. his kingdom

  1430. is an eternal one

  1431. and you know

  1432. what that means

  1433. it means that

1434. all that is not done

  1435. with eternity

  1436. in our minds

  1437. or God's glory

  1438. in our hearts

  1439. is eternally

  1440. irrelevant

  1441. and insignificant

  1442. do you get that

  1443. everything we do

  1444. without eternity

  1445. in our minds

  1446. and God's glory

  1447. and worship

  1448. in our hearts

  1449. is eternally irrelevant

  1450. and eternally insignificant

  1451. and because of this

  1452. because of God's

  1453. creative power

  1454. and his sovereign authority

  1455. and his supreme holiness

  1456. and his eternal glory

  1457. what do they say

  1458. worthy are you

  1459. oh God

  1460. to receive glory

  1461. and honor

  1462. and power

  1463. he is simply

  1464. worthy

  1465. now

  1466. next week

1467. we're going to find out

  1468. from Colin Farrell

  1469. that God is worthy

  1470. to be worshipped

1471. not only for who he is

1472. but because of what he's done

  1473. but here the angels

  1474. worship him

  1475. not because he's done

  1476. a single thing

  1477. they don't worship him

  1478. because he delivered them

1479. or because he saved them

  1480. from Egypt

  1481. or because he died

  1482. on the cross

  1483. just simply because

  1484. of who he is

  1485. worthy are you

  1486. our Lord and God

  1487. to receive glory

  1488. and honor

  1489. and praise

  1490. now

1491. what does all of this mean

  1492. for the people

  1493. of the early church

  1494. 2000 years ago

1495. and what does it mean

1496. for you and I today

  1497. well thank you

  1498. for asking that question

1499. it means a whole bunch

  1500. of things

1501. but I'm going to give us

  1502. just four things

  1503. two sources of encouragement

  1504. and two things

  1505. to challenge us

  1506. okay

  1507. and then we'll go

  1508. to communion

  1509. the first thing

  1510. it means is this

1511. history will not be defined

  1512. by current circumstances

  1513. at the time

  1514. that John is writing

  1515. this epistle

  1516. this revelation

  1517. to the early churches

  1518. the followers of Jesus

  1519. it looked as if

  1520. Rome's empire

  1521. would never end

  1522. okay

  1523. it looked as if

  1524. the church was becoming

  1525. increasingly insignificant

  1526. and smaller

  1527. Rome's power

  1528. was on the rise

  1529. and becoming more

  1530. and more powerful

  1531. and to many

  1532. holding on to

  1533. Jesus' kingdom

  1534. and the gospel message

  1535. in the face of

  1536. Roman power

  1537. and glory

  1538. felt like trying

1539. to hold on to water

  1540. and trying to hold

  1541. on to a stream

  1542. of water

  1543. right

  1544. it's just

  1545. it's going to run

  1546. away from you

  1547. it felt like

  1548. it's inevitable

  1549. it's going to disappear

  1550. but throughout

  1551. the book of Revelation

  1552. Rome's empire

  1553. is constantly

  1554. compared to Babylon

  1555. now why is that

  1556. well

  1557. 500 years beforehand

  1558. Babylon

  1559. remember Nebuchadnezzar

  1560. was the superpower

  1561. of the age

  1562. and to the people

  1563. of God

1564. in that day and age

  1565. it felt like

  1566. Babylon's power

  1567. would never end

  1568. it felt like

  1569. Babylon was

  1570. an eternal kingdom

  1571. and to the people

  1572. of God then

  1573. they felt like

  1574. God where are you

  1575. and yet Babylon

1576. came to a decisive end

  1577. and so God

  1578. shows the people

  1579. in the first century

  1580. Rome is just like

  1581. Babylon

  1582. it feels all powerful

  1583. now

  1584. but the circumstances

  1585. which you find

  1586. yourself now

  1587. are not the circumstances

  1588. that are going to

  1589. define all of history

  1590. this power authority

  1591. is coming

  1592. to an end

  1593. and Jesus

  1594. is showing them

  1595. and he's showing us

  1596. that it seems

  1597. like the power structures

  1598. of our day

  1599. will never cease

  1600. it seems like

  1601. this is just

  1602. the way the world

  1603. is going

  1604. it seems like

1605. if you try and resist

  1606. the way the world

  1607. is going

  1608. you're going to be

  1609. on the wrong side

  1610. of history

  1611. and friends

  1612. Jesus looks us

  1613. in the eye

  1614. and says

  1615. don't you believe it

  1616. don't you believe it

  1617. friends

  1618. this very week

  1619. tomorrow

  1620. some of us

  1621. are going to go

  1622. to work

  1623. high schoolers

  1624. you're going to

  1625. go to school

  1626. university students

  1627. you go to class

  1628. you write an assignment

  1629. friends

  1630. this week

  1631. every one of us

1632. are going to be told

  1633. every single day

  1634. that to follow Christ

1635. and to live for his glory

1636. and to steward our money

  1637. and our sexuality

  1638. and our desires

  1639. for his glory

  1640. and his kingdom

1641. is a waste of time

1642. because you're going to be

  1643. on the wrong side

  1644. of history

  1645. friends

  1646. this week

1647. we're going to be told

  1648. that to obey Jesus

  1649. and to honor him

  1650. with our sexuality

1651. and our views on gender

  1652. and our money

1653. that you're going to be

1654. on the wrong side of history

  1655. and it's a waste of time

1656. and you're going to be irrelevant

  1657. friends

  1658. don't you believe it

  1659. don't you believe it

1660. all that is not done

1661. with eternity in our minds

  1662. and God's glory

  1663. in our heart

1664. is going to be eternally

  1665. irrelevant

  1666. and insignificant

  1667. that's the first thing

  1668. second bit of encouragement

  1669. is this

  1670. followers of Jesus

1671. do not need to live

  1672. in fear

  1673. in our family

  1674. every now and then

  1675. typically on Friday nights

  1676. sometimes Saturday

  1677. or Sunday nights

1678. we have family movie night

  1679. and what we do

1680. is we make dinner together

  1681. so we make pizza

  1682. or sushi

  1683. or something

  1684. we all get involved

1685. and then we'll put on

  1686. a movie

1687. and we'll all watch it together

  1688. all four of us

  1689. okay

  1690. but invariably

  1691. what happens

  1692. no matter how

  1693. simple the movie is

  1694. okay

1695. at some point in the movie

  1696. the music

  1697. you know

  1698. goes

  1699. no no no no

  1700. no no no

  1701. and

  1702. or the story

  1703. takes a dramatic turn

  1704. something goes wrong

  1705. and our two girls

  1706. with such tender hearts

1707. run out of the room

  1708. to their bedrooms

  1709. covering their eyes

  1710. blocking their ears

  1711. and are too afraid

  1712. to watch the movie

  1713. right

1714. and so what do Claire

1715. and I have to do

1716. we have to go to them

  1717. and say

1718. I know how the story ends

  1719. it's okay

  1720. Ilsa and Anna

1721. are going to be friends

  1722. again

  1723. okay

1724. it's all going to be right

1725. Simba is going to go back

  1726. to Pride Rock

1727. and everything's going to be okay

  1728. at the moment

  1729. the thing is that

  1730. Annie and Mr. Socks

1731. or whatever his name is

  1732. what's

  1733. whatever it is

1734. they're going to get reconciled

  1735. okay

  1736. so it's okay

1737. I know how the story ends

1738. and we have to convince them

1739. that it's going to be okay

  1740. in the end

  1741. friends

  1742. in this world

1743. you and I are going to have trouble

  1744. no doubt about it

1745. we're going to have trouble

  1746. and that's partly

1747. because we live in a fallen world

  1748. our world is fallen

  1749. so there's heartache

  1750. and there's broken

  1751. things go wrong

  1752. it's partly because

  1753. if you're a follower of Jesus

  1754. there's a devil

  1755. that doesn't want you

  1756. to follow Jesus

1757. he wants to destroy you

  1758. and destroy your faith

  1759. and it's partly because

1760. you and I have got a sinful nature

  1761. and the sinful nature

  1762. in our hearts

1763. causes us all sorts of trouble

1764. the problem is not just out there

1765. the problem is in here

  1766. right

1767. and so you and I

1768. are going to have trouble

  1769. and sometimes the fear

  1770. is so overwhelming

1771. that we might just want to

  1772. run away

  1773. and block our ears

  1774. and cover our eyes

  1775. and just take away

  1776. their attention

  1777. and give ourselves

  1778. to some entertainment

  1779. or some other thing

  1780. that will distract us

  1781. from the troubles

  1782. in our world

  1783. friends

  1784. Jesus says

  1785. don't you see

1786. how it's going to end

  1787. don't you see

1788. who really holds the power

  1789. don't you see

  1790. there's a sovereign

  1791. omnipotent king

  1792. who really does sit

  1793. on the throne

  1794. of all creation

  1795. and yes

  1796. you will have trouble

  1797. in this world

  1798. but one day

  1799. every single thing

  1800. will bow the knee

  1801. before him

  1802. and will give him

  1803. glory and honor

  1804. and every knee

  1805. will declare

  1806. you are God almighty

  1807. you are worthy

  1808. to receive power

  1809. and praise

  1810. friends

  1811. that vision

  1812. will allow us

  1813. to get through

  1814. the trouble

  1815. and the difficulty

  1816. and the challenges

  1817. facing our life

  1818. and this vision

1819. of Jesus on the throne

  1820. is what Hong Kong

  1821. most needs right now

  1822. and friends

  1823. it's what you and I

  1824. need right now

  1825. to see God

  1826. on the throne

  1827. that he is eternal

  1828. and he rules

  1829. and he reigns

  1830. last two things

  1831. is this

  1832. two challenges

  1833. we can put them

  1834. in the way

  1835. of two questions

  1836. the first one

  1837. is this

  1838. in light of

  1839. revelation 4

  1840. friends

  1841. are you

  1842. or I

  1843. are we wasting

  1844. our lives

  1845. are we wasting

  1846. our lives

  1847. friends

  1848. in the coming

  1849. there is a day

  1850. coming

  1851. when all the money

  1852. that we've accumulated

  1853. all the corporate

  1854. accolades

  1855. that we've won

  1856. and attained

  1857. are going to be

  1858. utterly meaningless

  1859. and the praise

  1860. of man

  1861. and the recognition

  1862. of those around us

  1863. and the glory

  1864. and the honor

  1865. that we've strived for

  1866. are not only

  1867. going to be irrelevant

  1868. but they're going to

  1869. taste like sand

  1870. in our mouth

  1871. before the throne

  1872. of the one

  1873. that we were made

  1874. to worship

  1875. and adore

  1876. friends

  1877. you've only got

  1878. one life

  1879. this one and only

  1880. life that you have

  1881. what are you going

  1882. to do with it

  1883. don't waste

  1884. your one and only

  1885. life

  1886. chasing after things

1887. that are going to be

  1888. utterly meaningless

  1889. friends

  1890. how are you going

  1891. to spend this

  1892. one and only life

  1893. I pray

  1894. and I have been

  1895. praying for us

  1896. this week

  1897. I pray that each

  1898. one of us

  1899. whether you're a

  1900. businessman

  1901. whether you're a

  1902. lawyer

  1903. whether you're a

  1904. foreign domestic

  1905. worker

  1906. whether you're a

  1907. teacher

  1908. whether you stay

  1909. at home

  1910. and look after

  1911. kids

  1912. that one million

  1913. years from now

  1914. the things we

  1915. give ourselves

  1916. to this very

  1917. week

  1918. will still be

  1919. bearing fruit

  1920. because they

  1921. would have been

  1922. done for the

  1923. glory of his

  1924. name

  1925. to the praise

  1926. of the one

  1927. who created

  1928. all things

  1929. friends what are

  1930. you going to do

  1931. with your one

  1932. and only life

  1933. for some of you

  1934. young people

  1935. God may be

  1936. calling you to

  1937. full time ministry

  1938. to serve him as

  1939. a missionary

  1940. somewhere

  1941. to go into

  1942. ministry

  1943. don't run from

  1944. that calling

  1945. for some of you

  1946. in business

  1947. God's calling you

  1948. to serve him

  1949. to the praise

  1950. and the glory

  1951. of his name

  1952. in business

  1953. don't run

  1954. from that calling

  1955. serve him

  1956. to the glory

  1957. of his name

  1958. wherever you are

  1959. and then here's

  1960. the final application

  1961. the last challenge

  1962. is this

  1963. friends will you

  1964. be there

  1965. on that day

  1966. will you be

  1967. there

  1968. one of the most

  1969. unusual things

  1970. about the church

  1971. remember we said

  1972. the 24 elders

  1973. are a picture

  1974. of the church

  1975. the Old Testament

  1976. saints

  1977. the New Testament

  1978. saints

  1979. all seated

  1980. around the throne

  1981. giving honor

  1982. and glory to him

  1983. one of the most

  1984. unusual things

  1985. about the church

  1986. is that it includes

  1987. a whole bunch

  1988. of pretty sketchy

  1989. characters

  1990. okay

  1991. you think of

  1992. the apostles

  1993. think of the

  1994. apostle Paul

  1995. this guy who

  1996. went around

  1997. arresting people

  1998. tormenting people

  1999. persecuting people

  2000. sometimes killing

  2001. people because

  2002. they followed Jesus

  2003. you think of

  2004. the apostle Peter

  2005. the one who denies

  2006. Jesus in his

  2007. greatest hour

  2008. of need

  2009. you think of

  2010. the apostles

  2011. who fall asleep

  2012. as Jesus

  2013. about to go

  2014. to the cross

  2015. you think of

  2016. the other disciples

  2017. some of them

  2018. are tax collectors

  2019. Simon's a zealot

  2020. which means a

  2021. political terrorist

  2022. trying to overthrow

  2023. the Roman Empire

  2024. you think of

  2025. the Old Testament

  2026. saints

  2027. King David

  2028. the greatest

  2029. king in Israel's

  2030. history

  2031. he has an affair

  2032. with someone

  2033. she falls pregnant

  2034. and then he tries

  2035. to kill her husband

  2036. so that he doesn't

  2037. get blamed for

  2038. making her pregnant

  2039. friends

  2040. these are the saints

  2041. that are around

  2042. the throne

  2043. worshipping God

  2044. so what does that

  2045. tell us

  2046. it tells us

  2047. it tells us

  2048. that the only

  2049. way that you

  2050. and I are

  2051. ever going to be

  2052. around God's throne

  2053. one day

  2054. is by grace

  2055. and grace

  2056. and grace

  2057. alone

  2058. friends

  2059. Jesus tells us

  2060. again and again

  2061. it's not the most

  2062. religious

  2063. it's not the most

  2064. dedicated

  2065. they get to be

  2066. with him

  2067. no amount of

  2068. religious dedication

  2069. or observance

  2070. can qualify you

  2071. to be part of

  2072. the people of God

  2073. and yet Jesus

  2074. tells us again

  2075. that no amount

  2076. of sin

  2077. can disqualify us

  2078. from God

  2079. because all of us

  2080. carry more sin

  2081. in our hearts

  2082. than we actually

  2083. realize

  2084. as Oscar said

  2085. we're all more

  2086. broken than we

  2087. realize

  2088. you may think

  2089. I'm such a sinner

  2090. that disqualifies

  2091. you

  2092. if you only knew

  2093. what a sinner

  2094. you were

  2095. you'd be

  2096. even more

  2097. convinced

  2098. but that doesn't

  2099. disqualify you

  2100. from the throne

  2101. of God

  2102. friends

  2103. these people

  2104. the elders

  2105. are gathered

  2106. around the throne

  2107. clothed in white

2108. why are they in white

  2109. because they're not

  2110. there in their

  2111. righteousness alone

  2112. they're there

  2113. because they've been

  2114. given the righteousness

  2115. of Christ

  2116. friends

  2117. the only thing

  2118. that qualifies

  2119. us to stand

  2120. before the throne

  2121. of the sovereign

  2122. and holy God

  2123. is to recognize

  2124. that you and I

  2125. are not worthy

  2126. on our own

  2127. to come before him

  2128. how desperately

  2129. we need a savior

  2130. how desperately

  2131. I need a savior

  2132. friends

  2133. how desperately

  2134. you need a savior

  2135. friends

  2136. are you desperate

  2137. enough to cry out

  2138. to Jesus

  2139. for his mercy

  2140. have you come

  2141. to that place

  2142. if not

  2143. you may not

  2144. be a Christian

  2145. at all

  2146. you see

  2147. a Christian

  2148. a Christian

  2149. is someone

  2150. not those

  2151. that have got it

  2152. all together

  2153. Christians

  2154. are not the most

  2155. noble

  2156. the most religious

  2157. the most moral

  2158. Christians

  2159. are those

  2160. who recognize

  2161. that they're sinners

  2162. and that their

  2163. only hope

  2164. is in salvation

  2165. for salvation

  2166. is in Christ

  2167. alone

  2168. and therefore

  2169. they come to him

  2170. and surrender

  2171. friends

  2172. have you done that

  2173. will you be there

  2174. on that day

  2175. will you be counted

  2176. amongst those

  2177. that are around

  2178. the throne

  2179. giving honor

  2180. and glory

  2181. to him

  2182. or friends

  2183. will you be banished

  2184. for all eternity

  2185. because you've trusted

  2186. in yourself

  2187. Jesus invites us

2188. by the grace of God

  2189. to come to him

  2190. and find our hope

  2191. in him

  2192. friends here Jesus

  2193. shows us who is

  2194. governing the world

  2195. who you can really

  2196. trust

  2197. who is holding

  2198. the power

  2199. what happens

  2200. to the story

  2201. that is our lives

  2202. at the end

  2203. in the end

  2204. it all culminates

  2205. with the one

  2206. on the throne

  2207. with all creation

  2208. and all people

  2209. bringing glory

  2210. and honor

  2211. and praise to him

  2212. saying worthy

  2213. are you

  2214. our Lord

  2215. and God

  2216. to receive glory

  2217. and honor

  2218. and power

  2219. for you created

  2220. all things

  2221. and by your will

  2222. they all existed

  2223. and were created

  2224. let's respond to him

  2225. now

  2226. know

  2227. to start

  2228. work

  2229. and

  2230. set
