  1. I think so many of us have come to church this morning with something of a somberness,

  2. and I know I came with a bit of a heavy heart.

  3. What we need this morning is not just to hear the opinions of man, we're not just here to

  4. be inspired or to hear a prep talk, we need to hear God and encounter God.

  5. So let's come before Him in prayer, and I want to encourage you to listen to this prayer

  6. that I've written for us, and let's try and make it our own as much as possible, and

  7. then we'll listen to the reading of God's Word.

  8. So let's pray.

  9. Heavenly Father, loving Lord, we come to you this morning not in strength but in weakness.

  10. Father, we come not confident or self-assured, many of us come conflicted and afflicted and

  11. hurting, unsure of ourselves, unsure of how to make sense of the pain in our city, unsure

  12. of how to respond to what we see and experience around us.

  13. Oh Lord, Father, we are broken, God, by the hatred and the anger that we see, and we don't

  14. know how to respond, God, to so much of what's going on in our city and of what we are witnessing.

  15. Father, we don't know how it's going to end.

  16. God, we come to you this morning stripped of answers, stripped of any semblance of wisdom,

  17. stripped of any self-confidence, and Father, we feel like we've been laid low.

  18. How long, oh Lord, how long?

  19. As the psalmist tells us, God, we are weary with our groaning.

  20. We are worn out with anxiety.

  21. We are tired and exhausted, and our fears, God, are overwhelming.

  22. How long, oh Lord, how long?

  23. And so, Heavenly Father, we've come to you this morning, because we have nowhere else to turn.

  24. We come to you this morning because nothing else will answer our concerns.

  25. God, you have the words of life.

  26. Your Spirit speaks our hearts, and because despite everything we see around us, we believe that

  27. you, God, are truth, you are light, you are sovereign, and that our lives are in your

  28. hands, God.

  29. Father, as we turn to your word this morning, we long for you to speak to us.

  30. We long for you, God, to make sense of what we're struggling to make sense of.

  31. Father, we need you to pour faith into our hearts and to lift our sights onto you.

  32. And so, God, we come to you this morning because you are God and we are not.

  33. We come to you, God, because you are on your heavenly throne and have not been displaced.

  34. We come to you, God, because in you there is perfect justice.

  35. Oh, God, who is there like you?

  36. Who else can give our hearts peace like you?

  37. Who else will establish justice and righteousness like you?

  38. Who can keep people safe like you?

  39. Who can give us true freedom and hope like you?

  40. Oh, Lord God, this morning we've come to declare that, Father, despite what we see around us,

  41. there is no one and none like you.

  42. And our hearts and our hope are found in you, Lord God.

  43. This morning we join with the whole host of heaven, declaring that salvation belongs to

  44. our God and that our God reigns.

  45. Worthy are you, oh, Lord our God, to receive our worship, glory, honor, and praise.

  46. Both today in the city of Hong Kong, all around the world, and for all eternity.

  47. We pray these things in your powerful, your glorious, and your trustworthy name.

  48. Amen.

  49. Amen.

  50. Pui and Betty are going to come and read to us.

  51. And this morning we've got a long reading.

  52. We are reading two full chapters of the book of Revelation.

  53. So I want to encourage you to listen up.

  54. There's a lot of interesting terminology and symbolism, but let's listen to God's word

  55. being read to us.

  56. The scripture reading comes from Revelation, chapters 6 and 7.

    Revelation 6 chapter mention

  57. Please follow along in your booklets or on the screen.

  58. Now I watched when the Lamb opened one of the seven seals, and I heard one of the four

  59. living creatures say with a loud voice like thunder,

  60. Come.

  61. And I looked, and behold, a white horse, and its rider had a bow, and a crown was given

  62. to him, and he came out conquering, and to conquer.

  63. When he opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say,

  64. Come.

  65. And out came another horse, bright red.

  66. Its rider was permitted to take peace from the earth, so that people should slay one another.

  67. And he was given a great sword.

  68. When he opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say,

  69. Come.

  70. And I looked, and behold, a black horse, and its rider had a pair of scales in his hand.

  71. And I heard what seemed to be a voice in the midst of the four living creatures saying,

  72. A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius, and do not harm

  73. the oil and wine.

  74. When he opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say,

  75. Come.

  76. And I looked, and behold, a pale horse, and its rider's name was Death, and Hades followed him.

  77. And they were given authority over a fourth of the earth to kill with the sword, and with famine,

  78. and with pestilence, and by wild beasts of the earth.

  79. When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God,

  80. and for the witness they had borne.

  81. They cried out with a loud voice,

  82. O sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long before you will judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?

  83. Then they were each given a white robe and told to rest a little longer,

  84. until the number of their fellow servants and their brothers should be complete,

  85. who were to be killed as they themselves had been.

  86. When he opened the sixth seal, I looked, and behold, there was a great earthquake,

  87. and the sun became black as sackcloth, the full moon became light blood,

  88. and the stars of the sky fell to the earth as the fig tree cheds its winter fruit when shaken by a gale.

  89. The sky vanished like a scroll that is being rolled up,

  90. and every mountain and island was removed from its place.

  91. Then the kings of the earth, and the great ones, and the generals,

  92. and the rich, and the powerful, and everyone, slave and free,

  93. hid themselves in the caves, and among the rocks of the mountains,

  94. calling to the mountains and rocks,

  95. Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who is seated on the throne,

  96. and from the wrath of the Lamb.

  97. For the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?

  98. After this, I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth,

  99. holding back the four winds of the earth,

  100. that no wind might blow on earth, or sea, or against any tree.

  101. Then I saw another angel ascending from the rising of the sun,

  102. with the seal of the living God,

  103. and he called with a loud voice to the four angels

  104. who had been given power to harm earth and sea,

  105. saying,

  106. Do not harm the earth, or the sea, or the trees,

  107. until we have sealed the servants of our God on their foreheads.

  108. And I heard the number of the sealed,

  109. 144,000, sealed from every tribe of the sons of Israel.

  110. 12,000 from the tribe of Judah were sealed.

  111. 12,000 from the tribe of Reuben.

  112. 12,000 from the tribe of Gad.

  113. 12,000 from the tribe of Asher.

  114. 12,000 from the tribe of Naphtali.

  115. 12,000 from the tribe of Vanessa.

  116. 12,000 from the tribe of Simeon.

  117. 12,000 from the tribe of Levi.

  118. 12,000 from the tribe of Issachar

  119. 12,000 from the tribe of Zebulun

  120. 12,000 from the tribe of Joseph

  121. 12,000 from the tribe of Benjamin were sealed

  122. After this I looked

  123. And behold, a great multitude that no one could number

  124. From every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages

  125. Standing before the throne

  126. And before the Lamb clothed in white robes

  127. With palm branches in their hands

  128. And crying out with a loud voice

  129. Salvation belongs to our God

  130. Who sits on the throne and to the Lamb

  131. And all the angels were standing around the throne

  132. And around the elders and the four living creatures

  133. And they fell on their faces before the throne

  134. And worshipped God, saying

  135. Amen, blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving

  136. And honor and power

  137. And might be to our God forever and ever

  138. Amen

  139. Then one of the elders addressed me, saying

  140. Who are these, clothed in white robes?

  141. And from where have they come?

  142. I said to him, Sir, you know

  143. And he said to me

  144. These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation

  145. They have washed their robes and made them white

  146. In the blood of the Lamb

  147. Therefore they are before the throne of God

  148. And serve Him day and night in His temple

  149. And He who sits on the throne

  150. Will shelter them with His presence

  151. They shall hunger no more

  152. Neither first no more

  153. The sun shall not strike them

  154. Nor any scorching heat

  155. For the Lamb in the midst of the throne

  156. Will be their shepherd

  157. And He will guide them to springs of living water

  158. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes

  159. This is the word of God

  160. Great, thank you Betty and Pui

  161. For that long reading

  162. And thanks so much

  163. Well, we

  164. If you're new to Watermark

  165. We are working our way through the book of Revelation

  166. And I heard recently that somebody said

  167. They did some research in the U.S.

  168. And the book of Revelation is one of the books of the Bible

  169. That most Christians want taught to them and explained

  170. And it's the one book of the Bible

  171. That most pastors don't want to go anywhere near

  172. And I can understand why

  173. This week I said to Oscar

  174. I said, why on earth did we choose Revelation?

  175. It's this passage has beaten me up this week

  176. And we're starting to get to the interesting parts of it

  177. With interesting symbolism

  178. And so let's see if we can try and make sense of it today

  179. There's a lot in here

  180. And so let's go for it

  181. This week and next week

  182. Are going to be particularly challenging

  183. And for two reasons

  184. One, because the symbolism is so strange

  185. There are these strange horsemen

  186. And all sorts of things

  187. And moons that are turning blood and stuff

  188. And so that's challenging

  189. But then secondly

  190. When we actually try and understand it

  191. The message itself is challenging

  192. It's a hard message to receive

  193. And so

  194. I really do pray and trust

  195. That God will use His word to speak to us

  196. To both encourage us

  197. And to challenge us

  198. Now if you look back on the history of the world

  199. And especially the last century

  200. You'll see that our world has

  201. In the last century

  202. Had great moments

  203. Of wonderful moments

  204. Of human achievement

  205. Technological advancement

  206. Scientific

  207. Medicinal discoveries

  208. That have benefited human life

  209. But at the same time

  210. If we're honest

  211. And look back

  212. In the same period of time

  213. Many of those scientific discoveries

  214. And technological advances

  215. Have also been used

  216. To bring great harm

  217. And destruction

  218. On the world

  219. And so we think of even just

  220. For instance

  221. The invention of the airplane

  222. What a great benefit that's been

  223. But at the same time

  224. How that was used

  225. In so many wars

  226. To bring about great heartache

  227. And destruction

  228. We think of the World War I

  229. And World War II

  230. In the last century

  231. Think of the Holocaust

  232. We think of Pol Pot

  233. And his regime

  234. In Cambodia

  235. In the 1970s

  236. Two million Cambodians

  237. Were killed

  238. We think of the terrors

  239. In Africa

  240. The many many civil wars

  241. The Rwandan genocide

  242. We think of the chaos

  243. In the Middle East

  244. The famine in Oman

  245. At the moment

  246. As a result of war

  247. And if we who live in Hong Kong

  248. Ever felt

  249. Oh we are fortunate

  250. To live in the safe

  251. And secure society

  252. The last three months itself

  253. Has challenged that idea

  254. That actually we do live

  255. In a broken world

  256. And our world is full of tears

  257. And heartache

  258. Now for the Christians

  259. In first century Rome

  260. Their story was very similar

  261. Because the Roman Empire

  262. Was one that promised

  263. Great blessing

  264. The Pax Romana

  265. Promised relative stability

  266. And peace

  267. Throughout the Roman Empire

  268. Rome had secured

  269. Relative financial prosperity

  270. For its citizens

  271. There was infrastructural discoveries

  272. Like the highways

  273. And the aqueducts

  274. And so for the Roman Empire

  275. There was much blessing

  276. For those that enjoyed it

  277. But at the same time

  278. There was an ugly underbelly

  279. To the Roman Empire

  280. Because as their hunger

  281. For expansion grew

  282. So did the consequences of that

  283. Slavery

  284. Injustice

  285. Corruption

  286. Death

  287. And destruction

  288. And so the story

  289. Of the first century

  290. And the church

  291. That Jesus writes to

  292. In Revelation

  293. Is very

  294. Or not too dissimilar

  295. From actually our own world

  296. We see this

  297. Growth

  298. And development

  299. But at the same time

  300. This brokenness

  301. In our world

  302. Now if we were to ask

  303. An artist

  304. To paint us

  305. An impression

  306. Of the last century

  307. I wonder how

  308. He would do that

  309. What would an artist's

  310. Impression

  311. Of the last century

  312. Of all that we've described

  313. Look like

  314. Well actually

  315. There's an artist

  316. That did that

  317. And his name is

  318. Pablo Picasso

  319. In 1939

  320. He painted a very famous

  321. Painting

  322. Called Granica

  323. I think that's how you say it

  324. And we've got a picture of it

  325. Somewhere up here

  326. And the story behind this

  327. Is that two years previously

  328. In 1937

  329. There's a Spanish war going on

  330. And German bombers

  331. Came and flew over

  332. The Spanish town of Granica

  333. Bombing its citizens

  334. And the streets of Granica

  335. But what was happening

  336. Was actually

  337. A lot of the

  338. Hitler and his

  339. Military strategists

  340. Were actually practicing

  341. Their military strategy

  342. For what they would then

  343. Employ in the world war

  344. That was coming up

  345. And so what happened was

  346. The citizens of this town

  347. The fighter jets

  348. Come and bomb the town

  349. They all run

  350. And take cover

  351. They stay under cover

  352. For 15-20 minutes

  353. Or so

  354. An hour

  355. And as they come back

  356. Into the streets

  357. When they think

  358. It's calm again

  359. The planes come a second time

  360. Around

  361. And bomb them again

  362. And thousands of people

  363. Die in the Spanish town

  364. And so Pablo Picasso

  365. Paints this picture

  366. Called Granica

  367. It's a gross picture

  368. That's full of catastrophe

  369. And chaos

  370. And body parts

  371. Now Picasso's picture

  372. Doesn't represent history

  373. Like a photograph does

  374. Or like a newspaper report

  375. But it does convey

  376. Something of the horror

  377. And the chaos

  378. That took place

  379. In this town

  380. Just a few years before

  381. In a similar way

  382. This is what the passage

  383. In the book of Revelation

  384. Is like

  385. Jesus through

  386. The apostle John

  387. Is trying to give us

  388. A picture

  389. An artist's impression

  390. Of the story

  391. Of the world

  392. But he's not giving us

  393. A newspaper account

  394. Or he's not giving us

  395. A history book account

  396. It's this artistic impression

  397. That's full of imagery

  398. And strange symbols

  399. And chaos

  400. And destruction

  401. And moons that are

  402. Turning to blood

  403. And the stars are falling

  404. It's an artist's impression

  405. That conveys the story

  406. Of the world

  407. And is meant to elicit

  408. Our emotions

  409. To understand

  410. What God is trying to say

  411. Now as we get into

  412. The next couple of chapters

  413. The book of Revelation

  414. Has this series of sevens

  415. In chapter 6 and 7

  416. That we look at today

  417. There are seven seals

  418. On this parchment

  419. In chapter 8 and 9

  420. There are seven trumpets

  421. That are blown

  422. In chapter 11

  423. We see seven thunders

  424. And chapter 15 and 16

  425. There are seven bowls

  426. That are poured out

  427. With these seven plagues

  428. Okay

  429. Now John is not trying

  430. To predict the future

  431. He's not a fortune teller

  432. He's not trying to give us

  433. Chronological account

  434. Of the world

  435. And so some people say

  436. Okay what are the seven seals

  437. You know this is

  438. Nero

  439. And then this is

  440. This event

  441. And then we go to the trumpet

  442. And then chronological

  443. That's not what's happening

  444. What John is saying

  445. Is he's saying

  446. The story of the world

  447. Remember God's trying

  448. To peel back the curtain

  449. So we can see the world

  450. From heaven's perspective

  451. He's saying

  452. The story of the world

  453. It's a bit like this

  454. But it's also a bit like this

  455. And it's also a little bit like this

  456. In other words

  457. All the series of seven

  458. Are the same story of the world

  459. From a different angle

  460. It's like as Chris explained

  461. A few weeks ago

  462. You're watching a sports game

  463. Your team scores a try

  464. Or scores a goal

  465. And there's this camera angle

  466. That shows it from this angle

  467. And then they show

  468. The same event from this angle

  469. And then they show

  470. The same event from this angle

  471. This action replay

  472. That's what the book of Revelation

  473. Is really about

  474. It's going to show us

  475. The story of the world

  476. From all these different angles

  477. So that we can see it

  478. From heaven's perspective

  479. And so today

  480. We get to the first of these

  481. Seven

  482. These series of sevens

  483. And the images of a parchment

  484. Or a scroll

  485. That's been rolled up

  486. And in the ancient time

  487. When a scroll was rolled up

  488. It had these wax seals put upon it

  489. To keep it from praying eyes

  490. And from those that weren't meant

  491. To look inside

  492. And so there's this scroll

  493. And each time a seal

  494. Jesus breaks open

  495. One of these wax seals

  496. Some cataclysmic event

  497. Happens on the earth

  498. And so that's the background

  499. Behind our passage

  500. Now last bit of introduction

  501. Before we get to the passage today

  502. In order to really understand

  503. This section

  504. We need to follow

  505. The flow of thought

  506. Through the book of Revelation

  507. And so very briefly

  508. I'm going to recap

  509. Remember

  510. Chapter 1

  511. We see this vision

  512. Of Jesus in all his glory

  513. We sang about it earlier

  514. Jesus with eyes like fire

  515. Burnished bronze feet

  516. Voice like rushing waters

  517. And Jesus in all his glory

  518. Chapter 2 and chapter 3

  519. Jesus then writes these letters

  520. Or a letter

  521. To these seven churches

  522. In Revelation

  523. And the reason is

  524. Because these churches

  525. Same as our church today

  526. Are facing two challenges

  527. The one challenge

  528. Is to become

  529. Just like the culture

  530. In which it finds itself

  531. To become syncretistic

  532. Or to accommodate the culture

  533. To be seduced by the power

  534. And the prestige

  535. And the glamour of Rome

  536. And to try and find

  537. Their hope and confidence

  538. In the culture

  539. In which they find themselves

  540. But the other challenge

  541. The churches were facing

  542. Was to say

  543. No we're not going to

  544. Compromise like that

  545. We're going to stand firm

  546. But the church was so small

  547. It felt insignificant

  548. And how was the church

  549. Ever going to stand up

  550. Against the power

  551. And the machine

  552. Of the Roman Empire

  553. And so Jesus writes them

  554. And he says

  555. Don't be overwhelmed

  556. Or over seduced

  557. By the culture

  558. In which you find yourselves

  559. But also don't be overwhelmed

  560. With fear

  561. By the power of Rome

  562. Stay faithful to me

  563. Keep your eyes fixed

  564. On me

  565. I am your hope

  566. And Jesus

  567. At the end of each letter

  568. He says this

  569. This one refrain

  570. To the one who overcomes

  571. To those that endure

  572. To the end

  573. To those who conquer

  574. I promise life

  575. And blessing

  576. And reward

  577. And so Jesus

  578. Writes these letters

  579. To saying

  580. Stay faithful

  581. In the midst of the culture

  582. And the midst of fear

  583. And anxiety

  584. Keep your eyes fixed

  585. On me

  586. And then chapter 4

  587. We saw this

  588. Vision of Jesus

  589. Of God

  590. And all his glory

  591. On the throne

  592. All creation

  593. All angels

  594. Bowing down to him

  595. Worshipping him

  596. Not for what he's done

  597. But simply for who he is

  598. And then chapter 5

  599. Colin brought to us

  600. Two weeks ago

  601. Not only God

  602. On the throne

  603. But Jesus

  604. Is there right next to him

  605. And Jesus is worthy

  606. Of all worship

  607. And all honor

  608. And all glory

  609. Not only because

  610. Of who he is

  611. But because of

  612. What he's done

  613. Because he died

  614. On the cross

  615. To save you and I

  616. And so

  617. As the church

  618. In Asia Minor

  619. Reads this revelation

  620. Of God on the throne

  621. And Jesus is there

  622. Next to him

  623. The thought that

  624. Must have come

  625. To their mind

  626. Was come on

  627. What's there to worry about

  628. We've got this thing

  629. If this God

  630. Who is on the throne

  631. Of all the universe

  632. Is on our side

  633. And we're on his side

  634. We're indestructible

  635. Like

  636. This is a done deal

  637. Right

  638. What's there to worry about

  639. And Jesus now

  640. Writes to his church

  641. To show them

  642. That just because

  643. He's on the throne

  644. Doesn't mean

  645. That there's not

  646. Going to be any

  647. Difficulty in the world

  648. In which they live

  649. Because Jesus

  650. Writes them

  651. To show them

  652. That although

  653. His kingdom

  654. Has already come

  655. It hasn't yet

  656. Fully come

  657. In all its fulfillment

  658. Jesus is saying

  659. I came

  660. And I brought

  661. My kingdom

  662. It's already here

  663. But I haven't yet come

  664. When I come

  665. A second time

  666. It will be

  667. Fully established

  668. Jesus hasn't

  669. Fully

  670. Overthrown

  671. All his enemies

  672. Yet

  673. Now that day is coming

  674. When he returns

  675. But we live

  676. As Christians

  677. In this weird overlap

  678. Of the already

  679. And the not yet

  680. His kingdom has come

  681. But it hasn't yet

  682. Fully come

  683. And so we find ourselves

  684. In this

  685. Interesting stage

  686. In redemptive history

  687. Where Jesus

  688. Is on the throne

  689. But there's still

  690. Difficulty and chaos

  691. And trouble

  692. In our world

  693. Does that make sense?

  694. And so now

  695. The next ten chapters

  696. Of Revelation

  697. Jesus is writing

  698. To show his church

  699. And to give them hope

  700. In the midst

  701. Of this season

  702. In which they find themselves

  703. The midst of the already

  704. And the not yet

  705. Okay

  706. And so let's go to

  707. Revelation chapter 6

    Revelation 6:1

  708. Verse 1

  709. John looks

  710. And this is what he says

  711. Now I watched

  712. And when the lamb

  713. The lamb is Jesus

  714. Okay

  715. Jesus who died

  716. And came alive again

  717. When the lamb

  718. Opened one of the seals

  719. I heard one of the

  720. Four living creatures

  721. Saying with a loud

  722. Voice like thunder

  723. Come

  724. And I looked

  725. And behold

  726. A white horse

  727. Its rider had a bow

  728. And a crown was given to him

  729. And he came out

  730. Conquering

  731. And to conquest

  732. And John looks

  733. And he sees

  734. These four horses

  735. Okay

  736. He sees again

  737. Another Jesus

  738. Opening the seal

  739. And there's another

  740. Horse comes

  741. A red horse

  742. Which is symbolism

  743. Of blood

  744. And war

  745. And armies

  746. And conquest

  747. He sees another

  748. There's another seal

  749. Is opened

  750. And another horse

  751. Comes

  752. It's a black horse

  753. It's a picture of famine

  754. And economic injustice

  755. And inequality

  756. Interesting look here

  757. There's a voice

  758. In verse 6

  759. It says

  760. A quarter of wheat

  761. For a denarius

  762. Three quarters of barley

  763. For a denarius

  764. But do not touch

  765. The oil and the wine

  766. Do you know

  767. What's going on there

  768. When war comes

  769. What happens

  770. There's famine

  771. Right

  772. And so

  773. The price of staple foods

  774. Goes through the roof

  775. And so the two staple foods here

  776. Wheat and barley

  777. The price has just

  778. Exponentially gone through the roof

  779. It's like 15 or 20 fold

  780. What it normally is

  781. And so the people

  782. The staple foods

  783. The prices have just

  784. Gone through the roof

  785. But someone says

  786. Don't touch the price

  787. Of the oil and the wine

  788. Why not

  789. The oil and the wine

  790. Are commodities

  791. That the upper class

  792. The aristocrats

  793. Get

  794. And so the price

  795. Of that the poor

  796. And the marginalized

  797. Have to eat

  798. The staple foods

  799. Has gone through the roof

  800. But somehow

  801. Those that are in power

  802. And control

  803. Are controlling the prices

  804. Of the high end

  805. The caviar

  806. And the champagne

  807. So that their income

  808. Isn't affected

  809. But the income

  810. Of the poor

  811. And the marginalized

  812. Is affected

  813. It's a picture

  814. Of inequality

  815. And injustice

  816. And then a fourth horse

  817. Comes

  818. And it's a pale horse

  819. And it's a picture

  820. Of death

  821. And disease

  822. And destruction

  823. Now straight away

  824. When we read this

  825. One of the things

  826. That should impact us

  827. Is who is the one

  828. That's bringing this about

  829. Who is the one

  830. That's allowing this to happen

  831. It's Jesus

  832. Right

  833. Jesus is the one

  834. That's opening the seals

  835. And it's one of the creatures

  836. Around his throne

  837. That is calling this forth

  838. What on earth

  839. Is happening

  840. Why is it that God

  841. Allows this to happen

  842. Isn't God's job

  843. Just to keep peace

  844. On earth

  845. And to rid the world

  846. Of problems

  847. Isn't God

  848. The big guy in the sky

  849. And his job

  850. Is to make sure

  851. There's no difficulty

  852. In the world

  853. And just

  854. Everything is happy

  855. And fine

  856. Well friends

  857. That understanding

  858. Of God

  859. Is a very simplistic

  860. Or shallow reading

  861. Of the scriptures

  862. God is working

  863. All things

  864. Not just simply

  865. To bring peace

  866. And comfort

  867. And happiness

  868. In the world

  869. God is working

  870. All things

  871. For his purposes

  872. And his purpose

  873. Is not simply

  874. World peace

  875. Or my happiness

  876. Or your convenience

  877. His purpose

  878. Is establishing

  879. His kingdom

  880. And putting his glory

  881. On display

  882. And that's why

  883. It's confusing

  884. And as challenging

  885. As it may be

  886. Part of the reason

  887. Why we're in this

  888. Already and not yet

  889. Stage in the history

  890. Of the world

  891. Is God is strategically

  892. Working all things

  893. To bring his purposes

  894. To pass

  895. Not simply our comfort

  896. And our convenience

  897. Remember at the end

  898. Of Jesus' life

  899. He's about to go to heaven

  900. And his disciples

  901. Say to him

  902. Jesus are you going

  903. To now restore

  904. The kingdom to Israel

  905. You've died

  906. And you've risen again

  907. Now's a good time

  908. To vanquish your enemies

  909. And to restore all things

  910. And Jesus' answer

  911. Is

  912. It is not for you

  913. To know the times

  914. And the season

  915. That my father

  916. Has fixed by his own

  917. Authority

  918. Jesus is saying

  919. That until he returns

  920. We are still living

  921. In this ambiguous season

  922. When his kingdom

  923. Has come

  924. But it hasn't fully come

  925. And when he rules

  926. But he doesn't fully rule

  927. As he one day will

  928. Remember how Jesus

  929. Said this just

  930. To his disciples

  931. Before he went

  932. To the cross

  933. He said

  934. You will hear

  935. Rumors of wars

  936. And wars coming

  937. See that you are

  938. Not alarmed

  939. This must take place

  940. But the end

  941. Has not yet come

  942. Nation will rise

  943. Up against nation

  944. Kingdom will rise

  945. Up against kingdom

  946. There will be famines

  947. There will be earthquakes

  948. There will be destruction

  949. In various places

  950. All these things

  951. Are just the beginning

  952. Of the birth pains

  953. And this is exactly

  954. What John sees

  955. In chapter 6

  956. Jesus is telling

  957. The church in Asia Minor

  958. What he taught

  959. His disciples

  960. In this world

  961. You will have trouble

  962. In this world

  963. There will be difficulty

  964. He has not yet

  965. Utterly removed

  966. Wickedness and evil

  967. But says Jesus

  968. Do not fear

  969. This world

  970. Is not your home

  971. In verse 13

  972. He says

  973. The one who endures

  974. To the end

  975. Will be saved

  976. And that's exactly

  977. What Jesus says

  978. To the seven churches

  979. He's calling them

  980. And he's calling us

  981. To neither compromise

  982. By finding our hope

  983. In the systems

  984. Of this world

  985. Nor to cower away

  986. In fear

  987. Thinking that all

  988. Is lost

  989. But to keep our eyes

  990. Fixed on him

  991. Who is on the throne

  992. In this world

  993. You will have trouble

  994. Says Jesus

  995. But take heart

  996. I have overcome

  997. The world

  998. Your life

  999. Is found

  1000. In me

  1001. Okay

  1002. So that's the first

  1003. Four of these seals

  1004. John looks again

  1005. And he sees

  1006. A fifth seal

  1007. Broken open

1008. And look at what happens

  1009. John sees

  1010. What he says

  1011. Of the souls

  1012. In verse 9

  1013. Of those that have

  1014. Been killed

  1015. They are martyrs

  1016. Because they've held

1017. On to the word of God

  1018. And the testimony

  1019. That Jesus is

1020. Who he said he is

  1021. Which tells us

  1022. That Christians

  1023. Are not immune

  1024. From the wickedness

  1025. And the

  1026. Destruction

  1027. In our world

  1028. Jesus tells us

  1029. That standing for righteousness

  1030. For truth

  1031. For justice

  1032. It may invite wickedness

  1033. To come your way

1034. And that's the whole challenge

  1035. That these seven churches

  1036. Kept on facing

1037. This was the constant challenge

  1038. Will they avoid difficulty

  1039. Will they avoid suffering

  1040. By just assimilating

  1041. Into the culture

  1042. By trusting in Rome

  1043. By becoming just like

1044. The citizens of its city

  1045. Will they assimilate

  1046. Into it

  1047. And avoid difficulty

  1048. Or

  1049. Will they cower away

  1050. And hide

  1051. And try and preserve

  1052. Their lives

  1053. And Jesus says

  1054. That by declaring

  1055. That Jesus is Lord

  1056. Not the mission

  1057. Not Rome

  1058. Not the emperor

  1059. That Jesus Lord

  1060. Will invite difficulty

  1061. Into your life

1062. It will cost you something

  1063. That to be faithful

  1064. Even to death

  1065. Will

  1066. Jesus says

  1067. Will you be faithful

1068. Or will you shrink back

  1069. And preserve yourself

  1070. Friends

  1071. Is it any different

  1072. In our age

  1073. Of course not

  1074. Jesus asks us

  1075. The same question today

  1076. Will we assimilate

  1077. Into our culture

  1078. And become just like

1079. The citizens of our city

  1080. And avoid persecution

1081. Or will we shrink back

  1082. And quieten our voice

1083. Or will we stick to the truth

  1084. That Christ is Lord

  1085. And stand for him

  1086. Even though

  1087. It may cost us

  1088. Dearly

  1089. Look at verse 10

  1090. They say here

  1091. Oh sovereign Lord

  1092. Holy and true

1093. How long before you will judge

1094. How long will you avenge our blood

1095. Of those who dwell on the earth

  1096. In other words

1097. Jesus how long must we wait

  1098. Until you bring justice

1099. Until you crush your enemies

  1100. Until you establish justice

  1101. On the earth

1102. How long until you hold wickedness

  1103. To account

  1104. How long oh Lord

  1105. Must we wait

  1106. You see what's happening

  1107. To the Christians here

1108. Is that justice has been denied

  1109. To them on earth

1110. They know that in the courts of heaven

1111. The only courts that really count

1112. That in the end of the day

  1113. Justice will come

1114. The injustice that they experience on earth

  1115. For standing for truth

  1116. Will be overturned

1117. And justice will be done

  1118. And are they defeated?

1119. Yes on earth they're defeated

1120. Their lives are taken from there

  1121. But in heaven

1122. They are given the victory

  1123. Look at verse 11

1124. They are given white robes

  1125. A symbol of victory

  1126. And vindication

  1127. And life

  1128. Because what appears

  1129. Like their lives

  1130. Have been cut short

  1131. And wasted

  1132. Is actually

  1133. Their victory

1134. And so what is God's answer

  1135. To their question

  1136. How long?

  1137. They are told

1138. To wait a little longer

  1139. Until the number

  1140. Of their fellow servants

  1141. And their brothers

  1142. Should be complete

  1143. Now that doesn't mean

  1144. That Jesus in heaven

  1145. Has this KPI

  1146. Of how many martyrs

  1147. He needs to reach

  1148. Right?

1149. Until the end of the age

  1150. Jesus doesn't have a target

  1151. That he's waiting for

  1152. And saying

1153. The number hasn't got there

1154. What Jesus is saying is this

  1155. My purposes

  1156. And my plans

  1157. Are still rolling forward

1158. And they will not be delayed

1159. But they will not be brought forward

1160. I will accomplish my purposes

  1161. In my time

  1162. And in my plan

1163. There is still more room

  1164. For martyrs

  1165. To lose their life

1166. That happened in first century Rome

  1167. And friends

  1168. It's still happening

  1169. Today

1170. The time has not yet come

  1171. Now that may seem

  1172. Like such a waste

  1173. These men

  1174. These women

  1175. Losing their lives

  1176. For the gospel

  1177. But John says

1178. Their lives are not wasted

  1179. Because what may appear

  1180. Like their lives

1181. Have simply been taken from them

1182. Like in some senseless murder

1183. That's actually not the case

  1184. Look

1185. Where does John see these lives?

1186. Where are they in heaven?

  1187. Look at verse 9

  1188. He says

  1189. They are standing

1190. They are right by the altar

  1191. Which means their lives

1192. Have been offered up to God

1193. As an offering of sacrifice

  1194. They are an offering

1195. There's something beautiful about it

  1196. John Piper

1197. In one of his talks

  1198. Many years ago

1199. He very famously told the story

  1200. It's a true story

  1201. He said

  1202. Two ladies

  1203. Single ladies

  1204. In their 70s

  1205. Foreign missionaries

  1206. In a foreign land

  1207. And one day

1208. They're going about their business

  1209. And some catastrophe happens

1210. And they both lose their life

  1211. They're driving their car

  1212. On this mountain ridge

1213. To get to a village

1214. To go and share the gospel

1215. The brakes in their car fail

1216. They go over the edge

1217. And both of these ladies

  1218. In their 70s

  1219. Die

  1220. Is that a tragedy?

  1221. Asks John Piper

  1222. And the answer is

  1223. A resounding no

1224. What a way to go to glory

1225. What a way to spend your life

1226. To offer up your life

1227. For the cause of Christ

  1228. John Piper then says

  1229. Two people retire

1230. At the age of 60

  1231. And they spend

  1232. The best decades

  1233. Of their life

  1234. Taking walks

  1235. On the seashore

  1236. And collecting seashells

  1237. Is that a tragedy?

  1238. And the answer

  1239. Is a resounding yes

1240. What a way to spend

  1241. The finest last decades

  1242. Of your life

  1243. Taking walks

  1244. On the seashore

  1245. Collecting seashells

  1246. And drinking

  1247. Skinny cafe lattes

  1248. What better way

  1249. To spend your life

1250. Than to pour it out

  1251. As an offering

  1252. To God

  1253. Here are these martyrs

  1254. That have been killed

1255. For the cause of Christ

  1256. Their lives have been

  1257. Taken to them

  1258. And it's not a waste

  1259. For all eternity

  1260. Their lives will count

  1261. Because they've offered

  1262. Them up to God

  1263. I wasn't going to

  1264. Tell the story

  1265. But let me just

  1266. Tell the story

  1267. 1555

  1268. Two men

  1269. Two bishops

  1270. In London

  1271. Are arrested

  1272. For preaching the gospel

  1273. A man called

  1274. Nicholas Ridley

  1275. And Bishop Latimer

  1276. And as they tied

  1277. To the stake

  1278. There are

  1279. Some hay

  1280. Is put around

  1281. Their feet

  1282. And they're about

  1283. To be lit

  1284. The hay bales

  1285. Are lit

  1286. And Bishop Latimer

1287. Turns to the young man

  1288. Master Ridley

  1289. Nicholas Ridley

  1290. Is fearful

  1291. He's in his 40s

  1292. He's about to lose

  1293. His life

  1294. And Bishop Ridley

  1295. Says to him

  1296. Be of good cheer

  1297. Master Ridley

  1298. Play the man

  1299. This very day

  1300. We shall light

  1301. A candle

  1302. In England

  1303. As I hope

  1304. By God's grace

  1305. Shall never

  1306. Be put out

  1307. Friends

  1308. What kind of man

  1309. As the flames

  1310. Are starting to

  1311. End his life

  1312. And burn his legs

  1313. Can say

  1314. Be of good cheer

  1315. It's somebody

  1316. Who knows

  1317. That he's not

  1318. Wasting his life

1319. As he lays it down

  1320. For the cause

  1321. Of Christ

  1322. That brings us

  1323. To the sixth seal

  1324. In this one chapter

  1325. On the one hand

  1326. We're told

  1327. That we are living

  1328. The already

  1329. And the not yet

  1330. We're being told

  1331. That there will

  1332. Still be more martyrs

  1333. The time

  1334. But we're also told

  1335. That the time

  1336. Of Christ's judgment

1337. Has not yet fully come

1338. But on the other hand

  1339. We're now shown

  1340. That those who do

  1341. Spend their lives

  1342. For Christ

  1343. That those who

  1344. Experience the injustice

  1345. Of this world

  1346. That those who

  1347. Don't fight back

  1348. And try and preserve

  1349. Their lives

1350. But offer it to God

  1351. In the face of

  1352. Wickedness and oppression

  1353. And who offer up

1354. Their lives as an offering

  1355. Justice is coming

  1356. And the reason is

  1357. Because God's

  1358. Final judgment day

  1359. Is coming

  1360. And that's what

  1361. The sixth seal

  1362. Is all about

  1363. Let's look at it

  1364. Together

  1365. Look at

  1366. Verse 13

  1367. With me

  1368. There's this strange

  1369. Language of

  1370. The son

  1371. The moon

  1372. Becoming like blood

  1373. The stars

  1374. Falling from the sky

  1375. And the sun

  1376. Turning black

  1377. Now

  1378. That refers to

  1379. Two things

  1380. On the one hand

  1381. It refers to

  1382. The false gods

  1383. And the idols

  1384. That were being

  1385. Worshipped in the

  1386. Ancient world

  1387. In the ancient world

  1388. What were the

  1389. Gods of creation

  1390. That loved to be

  1391. Worshipped

  1392. It was the sun

  1393. The moon

  1394. And the stars

  1395. Right

  1396. Jesus says

  1397. In the final account

1398. At the end of the ages

  1399. What's going to happen

  1400. To those things

  1401. That the ancients

  1402. Loved to worship

  1403. They're going to

  1404. Be swept aside

  1405. And so will those

  1406. Who trust in them

  1407. They will be exposed

  1408. Nothing left

  1409. To show for it

  1410. Tim Chester makes

1411. The point where he says

  1412. Today the sun

  1413. Moon and stars

  1414. Have been replaced

  1415. By money

  1416. Sex and power

  1417. In humanity's list

  1418. Of favored deities

  1419. But one day

  1420. These two

  1421. Will be swept aside

  1422. And friends

  1423. All those who trust

  1424. In them

  1425. Will be exposed

  1426. But the other thing

  1427. That this refers to

  1428. Is that in the

  1429. Old Testament

  1430. This graphic language

  1431. Of the sun

  1432. And the moon

  1433. And the stars

  1434. Falling

  1435. Was symbolic

  1436. Of empires

  1437. And kingdoms

1438. Being brought to an end

  1439. And especially

  1440. God bringing

  1441. These empires

  1442. And these kingdoms

  1443. To an end

  1444. And Jesus

  1445. Is showing John

  1446. Yes it looks like

  1447. Rome is all powerful

  1448. Yes it looks like

  1449. Martyrs are never

  1450. Going to be vindicated

  1451. Yes it looks like

  1452. The church is

  1453. Insignificant

  1454. And poor

  1455. And powerless

  1456. Against the machine

  1457. Of the Roman Empire

  1458. But just wait

  1459. That's not how

  1460. The story ends

  1461. Ultimately

  1462. No kingdom

  1463. No dynasty

  1464. No empire

  1465. Will last forever

1466. There is coming a day

  1467. Where every empire

  1468. Will be brought

  1469. To its knees

  1470. And so what happens

  1471. In the end

  1472. When Christ

  1473. Establishes his kingdom

  1474. All those who look

  1475. Invincible

  1476. Kings and premiers

  1477. And emperors

  1478. And governors

  1479. And military leaders

  1480. All the way down

  1481. To slaves

  1482. And former slaves

  1483. All people

  1484. Everywhere

  1485. Will cower

  1486. And flee

  1487. In terror

  1488. Before the awesomeness

  1489. And the majesty

  1490. And the glory

  1491. That is God

  1492. Look at verse

  1493. 15

  1494. Then the kings

  1495. Of the earth

  1496. And the great ones

  1497. The generals

  1498. The rich

  1499. The powerful

  1500. But also slaves

  1501. And the free

  1502. Hid themselves

  1503. In the caves

  1504. And amongst the rocks

  1505. Of the mountains

  1506. Calling on the mountains

  1507. And the rocks

  1508. Fall on us

  1509. And hide us

1510. From the face of him

  1511. Who is seated

  1512. On the throne

  1513. And from the wrath

  1514. Of the lamb

  1515. For the great day

  1516. Of his wrath

  1517. Has come

  1518. And who can stand

  1519. And friends

1520. That is the momentous question

  1521. In the face

  1522. Of final judgment

  1523. When every emperor

  1524. And empire

  1525. When every president

  1526. And every premier

  1527. Will fit

  1528. In the most awesome

  1529. In the face

  1530. Of the most awesome

  1531. And terrifying

  1532. Authority of the world

  1533. In the face

  1534. Of God

  1535. Will run

  1536. For their lives

  1537. The question

  1538. Is this

  1539. Who can stand

  1540. Who can stand

  1541. Now before we get

  1542. To the final seal

  1543. In chapter 8

  1544. There is an interlude

  1545. And chapter 7

  1546. Answers the question

  1547. Of who can stand

  1548. Let's look at

  1549. Verse 1 together

  1550. Verse 1 of chapter 7

  1551. And after this

  1552. John says

  1553. I saw four angels

  1554. Standing at the four

  1555. Corners of the earth

  1556. Then I saw another

  1557. Angel ascending

  1558. With the seal

  1559. Of God

  1560. And he called

  1561. In a loud voice

  1562. Saying do not

  1563. Harm the earth

  1564. Or the sea

  1565. Or the trees

  1566. Until we have

  1567. Sealed the servants

  1568. Of our God

  1569. On their foreheads

  1570. Who can stand

  1571. Those that have

  1572. Been sealed

  1573. With the seal

  1574. Of God

  1575. It's a picture

  1576. Of remember

  1577. In Exodus

  1578. God comes

  1579. And he's

  1580. Delivering his people

  1581. He's going to

  1582. Save his people

  1583. By the blood

  1584. Of the lamb

  1585. But at the same

  1586. Time he's

  1587. Bringing judgment

  1588. The angel of death

  1589. Is going to

  1590. Come to Egypt

  1591. And bring judgment

  1592. On the nation

  1593. Of Egypt

  1594. But his people

  1595. Are going to

  1596. Be saved

  1597. How are they

  1598. Going to be saved?

  1599. By the blood

  1600. Of the lamb

  1601. That's been painted

  1602. On the doorpost

  1603. Of their house

  1604. They've painted

  1605. As it were

1606. A seal on their house

  1607. So that when the

  1608. Angel of death

  1609. Comes

  1610. It passes over

  1611. Because they've got

  1612. A seal over there

  1613. John is saying

  1614. The same thing

  1615. He's saying

  1616. Who in the day

  1617. Of final judgment

  1618. Who can stand

  1619. When God's judgment

  1620. Comes upon the earth

  1621. Who will stand?

  1622. Those that have been

  1623. Sealed

  1624. By their God

1625. And now for the second

  1626. Time in Revelation

  1627. John hears one thing

1628. And as he turns around

  1629. He sees something different

  1630. Remember in chapter 5

  1631. Colin preached it

  1632. Two weeks ago

  1633. John hears

  1634. The lion of Judah

  1635. And as he turns

1636. To look at the lion

  1637. He doesn't see a lion

  1638. He sees a lamb

  1639. Well the same thing

  1640. Happens here

  1641. John hears a voice

  1642. And saying

  1643. Those that are sealed

1644. Will stand in the day

  1645. Of great judgment

  1646. The 144,000

  1647. Now what's 144,000?

  1648. What does it mean?

  1649. Well remember

1650. In the book of Revelation

  1651. The symbol 12

  1652. The number 12

  1653. Is symbolic

  1654. The 12 apostles

  1655. Of the New Testament

  1656. The 12 tribes

  1657. In the Old Testament

  1658. Times a thousand

  1659. In other words

  1660. The 144,000

  1661. Those that are sealed

  1662. The complete number

  1663. Of God's people

  1664. Will stand

1665. In the day of judgment

1666. Not one will be missing

1667. Friends you may be here

  1668. A follower of Jesus

  1669. Maybe you've sinned tragically

  1670. Maybe you've done

  1671. Some dumb thing

1672. And you feel so guilty

  1673. And you feel like

  1674. God will kick me

  1675. Out of his kingdom

  1676. In that final day

1677. I will be destroyed by God

  1678. No

  1679. Not 139,999

1680. Not one will be missing

  1681. Because your eternal destiny

  1682. Doesn't depend

  1683. On your righteousness

  1684. It depends on

  1685. Are you sealed

1686. By the blood of the Lamb

  1687. On that great day

  1688. Every single one

  1689. Of God's people

1690. Not one will be missing

  1691. Will stand

  1692. Before the throne

  1693. John hears this number

  1694. God's people sealed

1695. And then when he turns around

1696. To look at this crowd

  1697. Of 144,000

  1698. What does he see?

  1699. He sees a multitude

  1700. A multitude

  1701. That is so vast

  1702. It cannot be numbered

  1703. He sees a multitude

  1704. Of people

  1705. From every tribe

  1706. And every language group

  1707. And every people group

  1708. And every ethnicity

  1709. And every culture

  1710. In other words

  1711. The greatest form

  1712. Of diversity

  1713. You can imagine

1714. From all over the globe

  1715. And they are unified

  1716. Together

  1717. Before the throne

  1718. Of the Lamb

  1719. There before the throne

  1720. You have Hong Konger

  1721. And mainland Chinese

  1722. Black

  1723. White

  1724. Chinese

  1725. Rich

  1726. And poor

  1727. Educated

  1728. And uneducated

  1729. Friends

  1730. Can I say

  1731. On the great day

  1732. Before the throne

  1733. Of God

  1734. There may be

  1735. Policemen

  1736. And protesters

  1737. Standing shoulder

  1738. To shoulder

  1739. Before the Lamb

  1740. Of God

  1741. Before the throne

  1742. Crying out

  1743. Salvation

  1744. Belongs

  1745. To our God

1746. Who sits on the throne

  1747. And to the Lamb

  1748. There will be

  1749. There will be

  1750. A great multitude

  1751. Of every person

  1752. From every people group

  1753. Those that have

  1754. Trusted in Christ

  1755. And how did they

  1756. Get there?

  1757. Some of them

  1758. Are there

  1759. Because of the martyrs

  1760. Some of them

  1761. Are there

  1762. Because they did not

  1763. Love their lives

  1764. And they were willing

  1765. To speak the truth

  1766. Of the gospel

  1767. They were there

  1768. Because they

  1769. Because the martyrs

  1770. Went out

  1771. And so here's

  1772. The big idea

  1773. Of this whole

  1774. Two chapter passage

  1775. It's taken us

  1776. 30 minutes

  1777. To get here

  1778. The big idea

  1779. Of this

  1780. In this world

  1781. Friends

  1782. We will have trouble

  1783. There's going to be

  1784. Wars

  1785. And rumors of wars

  1786. There's going to be

  1787. Destruction

  1788. And wickedness

  1789. There's going to be

  1790. Injustice

  1791. And inequality

  1792. There's going to be

  1793. Heartache

1794. And there's going to be

  1795. Pain

  1796. Even as we witness

  1797. What's going on

  1798. In our city

  1799. At this time

  1800. But that's not

  1801. The end of it

  1802. We live in a

  1803. Broken world

  1804. And we've contributed

  1805. To brokenness

  1806. And if you're a follower

  1807. Of Jesus

  1808. The temptation

1809. May be to make peace

  1810. With the systems

  1811. Of this world

  1812. In order to preserve

  1813. Our lives

  1814. Or to maximize

  1815. Our own security

  1816. Or to avoid

  1817. Discomfort

  1818. But the systems

  1819. Of this world

  1820. Are failing

  1821. They are absolutely

  1822. Failing

  1823. And every single system

  1824. Every political system

  1825. Every economic system

  1826. Every civil system

  1827. Every educational system

  1828. Even every religious system

  1829. That is not centered

1830. On he who is on the throne

1831. Is going to end up

  1832. In self destruction

  1833. Absolutely failing

  1834. It's absolutely going to

  1835. Come to an end

  1836. And one day

1837. Every one of those systems

  1838. Will be shown

  1839. For what they are

  1840. And what's more

1841. Is that they're going to be

  1842. Held accountable

1843. To the judge of all the earth

  1844. And so will those

  1845. Who trust in them

1846. But there is another way

  1847. There is another way

  1848. And that's to trust

1849. The one who is on the throne

  1850. To live our lives

  1851. By his story

1852. To be centered on him

1853. And to give our lives

  1854. To him

1855. Even as it costs us

  1856. Dearly

1857. The only way to stand

1858. In the day of great judgment

  1859. And the only way

  1860. For the things

  1861. That we give ourselves

  1862. To not end

  1863. In self destruction

  1864. Is to be centered

1865. On he who is at the center

  1866. Of all creation

  1867. And so finally

  1868. Look at verse 13

  1869. It says

  1870. One of the elders

1871. Addressed me and said this

  1872. Who are those clothed

  1873. In white robes

1874. And from where do they come

1875. I said sir you know

1876. He said those are the ones

1877. Coming out of the great tribulation

  1878. Tribulation means difficulty

1879. And they've washed their robes

  1880. And made them white

1881. In the blood of the lamb

1882. Friends on the final day

  1883. When all wickedness

  1884. Is held accountable

1885. When every bit of evil

  1886. Is finally and fully

  1887. Held to account

  1888. When perfect justice

  1889. Will be meted out

  1890. Who will stand

1891. Who will stand in that day

1892. Well the bible actually gives us

  1893. Two answers

  1894. And the first answer

  1895. It gives us

1896. Is no one will stand

  1897. Not you

  1898. Not me

  1899. Not the pope

  1900. Not mother Teresa

  1901. Not the most moral

  1902. Upright person

  1903. You can imagine

  1904. No one will stand

  1905. Before the awesomeness

  1906. Of our God

  1907. No one should stand

  1908. Friends if you

1909. New to church this morning

  1910. One of the things

  1911. You'll quickly discover

  1912. About this church

1913. Is that we are made up

  1914. Of 100% sinners

  1915. Every one of us

  1916. From the pastors

  1917. And the elders

  1918. To everyone else

  1919. None of us

  1920. Can stand

  1921. Before the awesomeness

  1922. Of our God

1923. But that's not the answer

  1924. That is given here

  1925. In Revelation

1926. The answer that's given here

1927. Is that those who stand

1928. The great day of God's judgment

1929. Are those who are gathered

  1930. Around the throne

  1931. And are standing

  1932. In robes of white

  1933. They're not there

  1934. Because of their

  1935. Religious devotion

  1936. That doesn't save anyone

  1937. They're not there

  1938. Because they're more moral

  1939. Than anyone else

  1940. That doesn't save anyone

  1941. They're not there

  1942. Because they gave money

  1943. To the church

  1944. That doesn't save anyone

  1945. They're not there

  1946. Because they are nicer

  1947. Or kinder

  1948. Or generally better people

  1949. Than anyone else

  1950. That doesn't save anyone

  1951. They are there

  1952. Because they've been washed

  1953. In the blood

  1954. Of Jesus

  1955. The lamb

  1956. That was slain

  1957. For them

  1958. Remember Psalm 130

  1959. If you are Lord

  1960. Should mark our iniquities

1961. Who are God could stand

  1962. But with you

  1963. There is forgiveness

1964. That you may be feared

  1965. Friends

1966. This is our only hope

1967. If it's not for the blood

  1968. Of Jesus

1969. None of us could stand

1970. None of us could be accepted

1971. None of us could be welcomed

1972. If it's not for the blood

  1973. Of Jesus

1974. You and I would stand

  1975. Fully accountable

1976. Before the throne of God

  1977. And be held accountable

  1978. For every word

  1979. That we've said

  1980. Every thought

  1981. That we've thought

  1982. Every action we've done

  1983. And in action

  1984. That we haven't done

1985. But for those who come to him

1986. Who put their hope in him

  1987. We are washed

  1988. Cleansed

  1989. Justified

  1990. Sanctified

  1991. In the blood

  1992. Of the lamb

  1993. Who can stand

  1994. Those that have come

  1995. Through the great tribulation

  1996. Those who've been washed

1997. In the blood of the lamb

1998. And finally in chapter 8

  1999. We see

2000. The seventh seal is open

2001. And when the seventh seal is open

  2002. There is silence

  2003. In heaven

  2004. Absolute silence

  2005. And it's a picture

  2006. Of how God's justice

  2007. Is finally there

  2008. Peace has finally

  2009. Come to the earth

  2010. Every tear

  2011. Has been wiped away

  2012. Every bit of wickedness

  2013. Has been destroyed

  2014. Every bit of evil

2015. Has been done away with

  2016. Everything that is wrong

  2017. With our world

  2018. Has been done undone

  2019. Finally

  2020. Utter peace

  2021. Has come

  2022. To creation

  2023. As we close

  2024. Tim Chester

  2025. In his book

  2026. He tells the story

  2027. He says that

  2028. In Rome

  2029. In the first century

  2030. There was this

  2031. Quasi-military

  2032. Fire service

  2033. Okay

  2034. Fire brigade service

  2035. And

  2036. There has

  2037. A monument

  2038. Survives today

  2039. That has a list

  2040. Of the thousand names

  2041. That were part

  2042. Of this

  2043. Fire brigade service

  2044. And on this monument

  2045. Has the list

  2046. Of these thousand names

2047. And it's got the names

  2048. Of the ten centurions

  2049. Remember

  2050. Centurion is somebody

  2051. That looked after

  2052. A hundred

  2053. Soldiers

  2054. And so it's got

  2055. The list

  2056. Of these thousand

  2057. Soldiers

  2058. The ten centurions

  2059. But also

  2060. Where the ten centurions

  2061. Came from

  2062. In the Roman Empire

  2063. And as you read

  2064. This list

  2065. You see that

  2066. These centurions

2067. Came from all over Europe

  2068. Modern day Bulgaria

  2069. Slovenia

  2070. Venice

  2071. Hungary

  2072. All over Europe

  2073. These people

  2074. Flocked to Rome

  2075. And joined

  2076. The military service

  2077. Rome was a city

  2078. In the ancient world

  2079. Which was constantly

  2080. Attracting immigrants

  2081. To come to it

2082. And part of the reason

  2083. Was because

  2084. More people

  2085. Died in Rome

2086. Than were born in Rome

  2087. And so if Rome

  2088. The city

  2089. Didn't constantly

  2090. Fill up its population

  2091. With immigrants

  2092. The population

  2093. Would dwindle

  2094. And would die out

  2095. And so Rome

  2096. Was constantly

  2097. Filling up its population

  2098. With these immigrants

  2099. But the problem was

  2100. Rome

  2101. Was also susceptible

  2102. To malaria

2103. And all sorts of diseases

  2104. And so people

  2105. Would come from

  2106. Other parts

  2107. Of the Roman Empire

  2108. They didn't have

  2109. Immunity from these diseases

  2110. And they would die

2111. Within a short few years

  2112. And so one historian

  2113. Mary Beard

  2114. Put it like this

  2115. She says

  2116. Rome

  2117. Simply swallows

  2118. People up

  2119. It's a city

  2120. Which consumes people

2121. And spews them out dead

  2122. Here is the greatest

  2123. City of the world

  2124. In its time

  2125. The most powerful

  2126. City of the world

  2127. The leader

  2128. Of the Roman Empire

  2129. It's the city

  2130. That everybody

  2131. Flocks to

  2132. To find work

  2133. And safety

  2134. And security

  2135. It's a city

  2136. That swallows people up

  2137. It consumes them

2138. And spews them out dead

  2139. Much like many

  2140. Of the modern cities

  2141. Of our world

  2142. Tim Chester says

2143. In the book of Revelation

  2144. We come across

  2145. Another city

  2146. Another empire

  2147. And it's also a city

  2148. Which draws people

  2149. From every single nation

  2150. Black

  2151. White

  2152. Chinese

  2153. Rich and poor

  2154. But around the throne

  2155. Of the Lamb

  2156. These people

  2157. Find

  2158. Life

  2159. Friends

  2160. The cities

  2161. And the systems

  2162. Of our world

  2163. Are going to

  2164. Self-destruct

  2165. It doesn't matter

2166. What system you trust in

2167. If it's not the system

2168. The city of the Lamb

  2169. It's going to

  2170. Self-destruct

  2171. But here we see

2172. In the book of Revelation

  2173. There is another empire

  2174. And it's attracting people

2175. From all over the world

  2176. And in this empire

  2177. In this city

  2178. Its citizens

  2179. Find life

  2180. That's the great challenge

  2181. And the invitation

  2182. Of Revelation

2183. For all of us today

  2184. Which kingdom

2185. Are we a part of?

  2186. Which kingdom

2187. Are we giving ourselves to?

  2188. Jesus and John

  2189. Invite us

  2190. To come and center

  2191. Our lives

2192. To offer up our lives

  2193. Yes as a sacrifice

2194. Yes it will cost us

2195. But also in great joy

2196. To the one who is worthy

2197. To the Lamb who is slain

2198. Who lives forever and ever

  2199. That in his presence

  2200. We may find life

  2201. Let's come to him

  2202. Now

  2203. Let's come and pray

  2204. Let's pray together

2205. And I want to invite the band

2206. To come and lead us

2207. And as the band come

2208. I want to invite us

2209. If you want prayer for anything

2210. There will be a prayer team

2211. That would love to come

  2212. And pray with you

  2213. The elders

2214. Maybe you can make yourselves

  2215. Available to come

2216. And be at the front

2217. If anyone would like prayer

2218. Please do come at the front

2219. We'd love to pray for you

  2220. Last Saturday night

  2221. At our retreat

2222. We had an amazing time

  2223. Of just praying together

2224. And it was such a rich time

2225. Of just being in God's presence

2226. And standing as brothers and sisters

  2227. Praying for one another

  2228. Friends if you

  2229. This morning you feel

  2230. Anxious

  2231. You feel weary

  2232. You feel fearful

  2233. You feel overwhelmed

2234. Come we'd love to pray with you

2235. Father we come to you this morning

  2236. We acknowledge God

  2237. That the temptation

2238. That the church has felt

  2239. In the first century

2240. Is the same temptation we feel

  2241. God to either

  2242. Shrink into our culture

  2243. And to

  2244. Try and preserve ourselves

2245. By becoming just like our culture

2246. Or to try and preserve ourselves

  2247. By shrinking back

  2248. And fearfully

2249. Not declaring the truth of the gospel

  2250. God

  2251. God you call us

  2252. In days like today

2253. In times in which we find ourselves

2254. To fix our eyes on you

2255. And so we come to you God

2256. We come to you now

2257. Father you've shown us this morning

  2258. That

2259. Yes this world is full of

  2260. Wickedness and evil still

  2261. Yes this world

2262. There's wars and rumors of wars

2263. There's kingdom rising against kingdom

  2264. And destruction

2265. But God in the end

  2266. You and your people

  2267. Will stand

  2268. Oh Christ

2269. Help us to trust you

  2270. We pray

  2271. Father open our eyes

  2272. To see you

  2273. And to trust you

  2274. We pray Lord

  2275. Father

2276. Father want you help us to see

2277. That our lives are not in our own hands

2278. But they are in your hands

2279. That God we are part of an eternal kingdom

2280. Father help us to trust you

  2281. We pray

  2282. This week God

  2283. As we are

2284. As we go to work

2285. As we encounter the difficulties

2286. That our city is going through

  2287. We pray God

2288. That we'll trust you Lord

  2289. Help us oh Lord

2290. Where our faith is failing

2291. Where we feel overwhelmed by fear

2292. Help us to trust you God

2293. Help us to keep our eyes fixed on you

2294. Come and have you away

2295. We pray these things in your name

  2296. Amen

  2297. Amen

  2298. Amen

  2299. We're 항 by

  2300. Amen
