  1. Father, we ask that you would gently pour out the Holy Spirit deep within us,

  2. that we might think about Jesus, that we might think about death,

  3. that we might think about his death upon the cross and his being buried in the tomb,

  4. and that you might bring that home to our hearts.

  5. And we ask these things in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  6. Please be seated.

  7. So I spent some time in a grave.

  8. Some of you have heard this story before.

  9. I've been ordained for three years.

  10. I've done lots of funerals here in the city.

  11. And then I got sent to look after four little country churches up the valley

  12. in places called Eganville, Killaloo.

  13. Famous Killaloo Sunrise was invented there.

  14. Tremor and Clontarf.

  15. And I did a lot of funerals when I was in that church, actually.

  16. And I'd only actually been in that little rural church about a week and a half.

  17. And I did my first funeral.

  18. And then about a week later, I did another funeral.

  19. And the second funeral was one of the things they have in small rural places,

  20. which they don't have in the city, is they have private graveyards.

  21. And I went to this.

  22. I did a funeral for this person.

  23. And the burial place was going to be in a private family burial plot.

  24. And one of the things I liked to do in the city when I could, when I was doing a funeral,

  25. was not to be in the funeral director's car.

  26. But I often liked to sort of zoom up in my own car so I could be there a little bit in advance.

  27. And just later on, I didn't have to wait for the funeral director for me to leave the reception.

  28. I could leave when I wanted, either stay longer or earlier or whatever.

  29. Anyway, so I zoom up early, quite a bit faster than a funeral procession.

  30. I get there.

  31. I park.

  32. I walk up.

  33. And I thought I'd just sort of walk to see where the grave is.

  34. And if any of you have been to a grave site in Canada, there's usually artificial grass off on the side.

  35. And I'm walking up to the grave.

  36. And all of a sudden, before I know it, I fall into the grave.

  37. Because the green artificial grass, there are like planks to step on.

  38. And if the plank is over here, the green artificial grass went all the way up to here because there was a hole there, which I did not know about.

  39. So I slid into a seven or eight foot deep grave.

  40. Was I ever embarrassed?

  41. I was so terrified that I would have to be, when the family would come, that I would have to be rescued from the grave and then do the funeral.

  42. And it was really dusty.

  43. So I'm in black, but I'm all covered in dust.

  44. And so I'm trying to scramble up the side of the grave.

  45. I'm also now, I have this double worry that I'll actually make the hole bigger and the grass won't cover it.

  46. Anyway, I eventually am able to scramble up covered in dust.

  47. I go off to the side.

  48. I do the best job I can to beat the dust off my black.

  49. Nobody ever commented on why I was so dusty.

  50. And I never made any reference to it that I actually spent some time in the grave.

  51. So that's been my one time in the grave.

  52. I know that's a very silly introduction to this, which is a very, very serious story.

  53. But we're looking today at the death of Jesus and the death of Jesus and ultimately his burial, entombment in a tomb.

  54. So it would be a great help to me if you got your Bibles and turned to John chapter 19.

    John 19 chapter mention

  55. And we read here of John's account.

  56. There's a movie reviewer that I quite like.

  57. I read him almost every week.

  58. I won't say what his name is, but there's a movie reviewer that I like quite a bit.

  59. And just a couple of days ago, on Friday, he did a movie review of a new movie that's just come out from Hollywood about Mary Magdalene.

  60. And at the end of the movie review, he made a couple of – it was such a typical type of comment to be made.

  61. He made a comment about how some pope in the 500s made this determination about what Mary Magdalene was.

  62. And then he made a comment about how this movie will help to dispel the inaccuracy, you know, the misinformation that comes from religious bureaucrats or something like that.

  63. And I thought to myself as I read it, I thought, well, you're a really good movie reviewer, but you know absolutely nothing about how the Bible was put together.

  64. Like, your ignorance is unbelievably deep.

  65. If you're here this morning, I don't think you ever come to the church.

  66. I didn't mean to insult you.

  67. So anyway, that's funny.

  68. But so the fact of the matter is that there are four, as we all know, ancient biographies of Jesus.

  69. And so actually, I mean, I think that particular pope was wrong to say what he said about Mary because it was based on tradition, not on what the Bible actually says.

  70. But what we're looking at here is an ancient eyewitness biography of Jesus.

  71. And the way that John has told the story, because that's what you tell when you're telling a person's life story, you tell the story.

  72. It's a biography.

  73. And John has now he's gone through the capture of Jesus, the trial of Jesus, all the shenanigans that went around with this.

  74. And as I said, as introducing the reading, the decision is made to crucify Jesus.

  75. And now we have the crucifixion of Jesus.

  76. It gets right to it.

  77. In those days, that's the way they did it.

  78. And so it begins like this, chapter 19, verse 16.

  79. So they took Jesus, that's the soldiers, and he went out bearing his own cross to the place called the place of a skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha.

  80. Now, just pause here for a second.

  81. This is a silly little thing.

  82. Some of you might know, I make some jokes, that if I was ever going to plant a Baptist church, I'd call it 13th Baptist Church.

  83. Why?

  84. I don't know.

  85. I think that's just sort of funny, you know, not First Baptist or anything like that, 13th Baptist Church.

  86. But I now have a new name for a Baptist church.

  87. It would be called the place of the skull Baptist church.

  88. Because actually, there's a place of the skull Baptist church in every city of Ottawa, and maybe in North America.

  89. They just don't realize it.

  90. Because you see, this is really funny.

  91. The place of the skull is the literal translation.

  92. And then he says Golgotha.

  93. But what happened is when the people who translated the Greek Golgotha into Latin, they used a different word.

  94. And then, and for many, many years in the West, that Latin word was what people heard in the church.

  95. And then people took the way to pronounce it in English.

  96. And the way you pronounce the Latin word in English is Calvary.

  97. So those of you who are members of Calvary Fellowship, you were a member of the place of the skull fellowship.

  98. Our friends who go to Calvary Baptist, that's the place of the skull Baptist church.

  99. I just think they should just be out front and just claim it, you know.

  100. Just embrace such an unbelievably non-postmodern name.

  101. Actually, it sort of is postmodern to do something like that.

  102. But anyway, that's an aside.

  103. That's so Calvary is how, that's, it's not mentioned here, but that's where the word Calvary comes from.

  104. It comes from Golgotha, and it means in Aramaic, a place of a skull.

  105. Verse 18, there they crucified him and with two others, one on either side and Jesus between them.

  106. And there they crucified him and with him two others, one on either side and Jesus between them.

  107. It's really interesting how the writer here helps us now to remember something which we need to think about a little bit more,

  108. and we often don't think about as Christians, is that on one hand, the crucifixion of a Jewish man was nothing special.

  109. Like even here when we're hearing about Jesus being crucified, he's one of three people who are being crucified.

  110. Because there's so many historical references between the ancient biographies, what we now know of as the Gospels,

  111. and Roman and Jewish life, and you can cross-reference these things with what Roman and Jewish historians have said.

  112. Depending on how you put things together, we know that Jesus was crucified either in the spring of the year 30 or the spring of the year 33.

  113. One of those two years.

  114. It depends on how you put some things together.

  115. But one of those two years is when Jesus actually died.

  116. You can actually go back and you can figure out the actual day because there's so many historical cross-references in the Gospel.

  117. And because they're writing history, right?

  118. It's an historical biography by eyewitnesses.

  119. But in the year 70, so either 40 years after this or 37 years after this, depending on how you put some cross-references together,

  120. the Roman armies surround Jerusalem and they put it under a siege.

  121. And at the end of the siege, they win the siege.

  122. Jerusalem is overrun and the city is destroyed.

  123. But here's the thing.

  124. Historians say that during that, I think it was a four-month siege.

  125. During that four-month siege, as part of the way to terrorize the population within the walls,

  126. the Romans crucified 500 Jews a day.

  127. 500 Jews a day for four months.

  128. That's a lot of crucifixions.

  129. In fact, the Roman historians say because the Roman practice of crucifixion was that you'd put the person up on the cross to die.

  130. And that might take, I mean, they might die.

  131. Sometimes people died just by the whipping.

  132. But if they, and then some people would die very quickly on the cross.

  133. But a young, fit person could maybe go three days or whatever.

  134. And the Roman habit was then to leave the body on the grave long enough that some of the decomposition would happen,

  135. as well as the animals being able to eat parts of the body.

  136. And it was just all part of the way to spread terror, of course, right?

  137. And so the Roman historians say that they were crucifying so many Jewish people that they actually started to have problems getting enough wood for the crosses.

  138. And I just mention that because whatever we're going to say about Jesus and what's going on here is that the crucifixion of a Jew is nothing special.

  139. But there's something particularly of interest about this person.

  140. And that's sort of what we need to think about a little bit.

  141. Jesus dies by a way that was commonly used to terrorize indigenous people, I guess we would now say, and by their political masters.

  142. And Jesus was just one more example of an indigenous person being killed by an imperial power.

  143. And even in the story, he's just one of three.

  144. He's the guy who happens to be in the center, but he's just one of the three.

  145. And the story continues.

  146. Pilate also wrote an inscription, which was very common, and put it on the cross.

  147. It read, Jesus of Nazareth, the king of the Jews.

  148. Many of the Jewish people read this inscription for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city,

  149. and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek.

  150. In other words, in the local language, Aramaic.

  151. In Greek, which was the language, the common language of the empire.

  152. And in Latin, which was the imperial language used by their imperial masters.

  153. So the chief priest of the Jews said to Pilate, do not write the king of the Jews,

  154. but rather this man said, I am the king of the Jews.

  155. And Pilate answered, what I have written, I have written.

  156. And those of you who have been following the story, there's lots of irony which is going on here.

  157. One of the ironies is actually the way that it's written here is that the king of the Jews,

  158. and when it says Jesus of Nazareth, the king of the Jews,

  159. and then just a few lines later it says the chief priest of the Jews,

  160. there's a type of a balance that the language is exactly the same,

  161. showing the contrast between Jesus and the religious leaders.

  162. And of course, another important part of all of this is that these same spiritual leaders,

  163. just an hour or so earlier,

  164. had actually publicly acclaimed an act of blasphemy,

  165. that Caesar was their king.

  166. And so part of the irony of this story is that the religious leaders claim that Caesar is their king,

  167. and Caesar claims that Jesus is their king, which is very ironic.

  168. And the story continues.

  169. Verse 23.

  170. When the soldiers had crucified Jesus,

  171. they took his garments and divided them into four parts.

  172. One for each soldier, also his tunic.

  173. But the tunic was seamless,

  174. woven in one piece from top to bottom.

  175. And just sort of pause here.

  176. There's one of the things here which is very interesting,

  177. if you think about it for a second.

  178. My parents are still alive,

  179. so I haven't had to bury them,

  180. and I haven't had to clean out their house or anything like that.

  181. As many of you know,

  182. what often happens is when you reach a certain age,

  183. you have to downsize,

  184. maybe go into some type of a smaller facility.

  185. You have to get rid of a lot of your furniture and possessions.

  186. It doesn't happen with everybody.

  187. Louise's father died,

  188. owning two properties with lots and lots and lots of stuff to get rid of.

  189. But often,

  190. one of the things you have to,

  191. often,

  192. I mean,

  193. not in every case,

  194. in every case,

  195. one of the things you have to dispose of is the clothes.

  196. And it's just this very,

  197. very small little item,

  198. and we're going to mention another thing about it in a moment.

  199. But if you think about it,

  200. the soldiers are so certain of Jesus's death

  201. that they dispose of his clothes

  202. while he's hanging above them.

  203. See,

  204. one of the things the story is going to do

  205. time and time and time and time and time again

  206. is emphasize that Jesus dies.

  207. The guarantors of his death are the Roman soldiers.

  208. It's not the disciples of Jesus.

  209. Okay,

  210. he's dead.

  211. He's dead.

  212. And then he's not really.

  213. No,

  214. the guarantor of the death of Jesus

  215. is,

  216. in fact,

  217. the Roman soldiers.

  218. And the text,

  219. time and time again,

  220. in small,

  221. subtle ways,

  222. crucified,

  223. his body,

  224. the embalming,

  225. even this very simple act

  226. of disposing of the possessions,

  227. something that we usually do.

  228. It would be as if

  229. I go into the hospital

  230. and because I have a bad,

  231. a bad,

  232. you know,

  233. whatever,

  234. and then I find out that,

  235. you know,

  236. in Louise's,

  237. I'd say,

  238. pre-decease me,

  239. which will definitely not happen,

  240. but just for the case of this story,

  241. she's a vegetarian.

  242. I eat meat.

  243. She eats way healthier than I.

  244. She's going to outlive me by a long time.

  245. Anyway,

  246. and so,

  247. you know,

  248. it'd be as if I'm,

  249. I'm,

  250. I'm,

  251. I'm in the hospital

  252. and it maybe doesn't look too good for me

  253. and I find out my kids have sold the house,

  254. my house,

  255. and they've sold all my stuff.

  256. And in fact,

  257. they actually come and come into the closet

  258. and take the clothes I have in the closet

  259. and say,

  260. you're not going to need these clothes

  261. because all you have left is the hospital gown

  262. and that's all you need,

  263. dad.

  264. Like,

  265. they're so certain of my death

  266. and so quick to get rid of it.

  267. And,

  268. and that's what's happening here.

  269. It's a,

  270. it's a small thing,

  271. and we read it all the time

  272. without realizing the significance of it.

  273. The soldiers know he's dead.

  274. He's still alive,

  275. technically,

  276. but he's dead.

  277. You get rid of all of his stuff now.

  278. And time and time and time and time again

  279. in the story,

  280. it's going to be emphasized,

  281. Jesus died,

  282. Jesus died,

  283. Jesus died.

  284. They do it with different words,

  285. crucifixion,

  286. body,

  287. this,

  288. the piercing of the side,

  289. the embalming process,

  290. all different ways of indicating he dies.

  291. But there's something else here,

  292. which is also significant,

  293. which comes right up in verse 24.

  294. So they said to one another,

  295. remember,

  296. they're dividing up his clothes,

  297. and he must have had like five pieces of clothes,

  298. and they take,

  299. or a big piece that they can sort of separate out the fabric or whatever,

  300. but they come to one piece,

  301. and they decide it's a bit more precious,

  302. and,

  303. and there's four guys,

  304. and just,

  305. anyway,

  306. they decide that we'll gamble for the last piece.

  307. Verse 24,

  308. So they said to one another,

  309. let us not tear it,

  310. but cast lots,

  311. or dice,

  312. to see who it shall be.

  313. And here's this thing,

  314. which is very important.

  315. This was to fulfill.

  316. The scripture which says,

  317. they divided my garments among them,

  318. and from my clothing they cast lots.

  319. So the soldiers did these things.

  320. I was walking with Jason the other day

  321. to have a coffee with him on Friday,

  322. and I made a joke to him

  323. that if you want to have,

  324. I hope there's no weatherman here,

  325. sorry,

  326. I said,

  327. if you want to have a job

  328. where you can be wrong almost all the time

  329. and still have job security,

  330. become a weatherman.

  331. Because as we were walking,

  332. the weatherman got it wrong about the weather.

  333. But I've never heard,

  334. maybe they do,

  335. maybe they fire weathermen

  336. because,

  337. you know,

  338. you said it was not going to rain

  339. until the evening,

  340. and it rained at three or whatever.

  341. I don't know,

  342. maybe that happens,

  343. but it seems as if you can make predictions

  344. in that field,

  345. and it doesn't affect your job security.

  346. But what we see here

  347. is something which is very,

  348. very interesting.

  349. It's not,

  350. prophecy is more than a prediction,

  351. although it is a bit of a,

  352. like a prediction.

  353. But what we're going to see here

  354. time and time again,

  355. and if you go back and read

  356. the other parts of John,

  357. beginning at John chapter 18,

    John 18 chapter mention

  358. you'll see this constant refrain,

  359. it was fulfilled,

  360. it was fulfilled,

  361. it was fulfilled.

  362. In other words,

  363. the Bible is saying

  364. that whether,

  365. as Daniel introduced Psalm 22,

  366. whether it's David writing

  367. over a thousand years

  368. before the death of Jesus,

  369. but writing a psalm

  370. which describes the crucifixion.

  371. In fact,

  372. he describes some of the terms

  373. and some of the ways

  374. that a crucifixion works.

  375. My bones out of joint,

  376. my heart,

  377. my lips dry,

  378. and crucifixion hadn't even been invented.

  379. And time and time and time again

  380. in the story,

  381. they're going to say

  382. that Jesus fulfilled this,

  383. he fulfilled this.

  384. And in some cases,

  385. they're even going to say

  386. that Jesus not just fulfilled

  387. a specific prophecy,

  388. but as we're going to see,

  389. you'll see that he fulfilled

  390. the general promises

  391. and longings

  392. and types of the Old Testament.

  393. Like one of the things

  394. which is happening here

  395. is that Jesus is dying

  396. at the same time

  397. that in another part of the city,

  398. they're killing the lambs,

  399. the spotless lambs,

  400. as part of the Passover celebration.

  401. And Passover is the profound act

  402. that makes Israel Israel

  403. when God delivers the Jewish people

  404. out of slavery,

  405. of bondage in Egypt.

  406. And after Pharaoh refuses

  407. and refuses and refuses

  408. and refuses to let these slaves go,

  409. Moses says God is going to do

  410. his final punishment.

  411. And if you want to be saved

  412. and spared and be delivered,

  413. you are to kill a lamb

  414. and you are to take

  415. the blood of the lamb

  416. and you are to use some hyssop

  417. and take the blood of the lamb

  418. to cover the entranceway

  419. of your house.

  420. And if you put the blood of the lamb

  421. using hyssop

  422. on the doorways to the house,

  423. then you will be spared

  424. God's judgment of death

  425. and you will be free

  426. and be delivered.

  427. And at the same time,

  428. we'll even see

  429. that using the hyssop branch

  430. in a few moments,

  431. the same time

  432. that these lambs

  433. are being slaughtered

  434. is when Jesus is dying,

  435. that he fulfills

  436. not just specific scriptures,

  437. but the types.

  438. Jesus is introduced by John

  439. as the lamb of God

  440. who takes away

  441. the sin of the world.

  442. And here we see

  443. the lamb of God

  444. who takes away

  445. the sin of the world

  446. dying at the same time

  447. that the lambs are dying.

  448. And we're seeing here

  449. that the death of Jesus

  450. is a fulfillment

  451. of the promises

  452. and the words of God

  453. that have been made

  454. over centuries

  455. by many, many different writers.

  456. And the other thing

  457. which is so remarkable

  458. about this,

  459. and the word fulfilled,

  460. you'll see it repeated

  461. time and time and time again,

  462. is that Jesus

  463. and his disciples

  464. could not have orchestrated

  465. these fulfillments.

  466. In fact,

  467. the enemies of Jesus

  468. unwittingly

  469. act to fulfill

  470. the prophecies.

  471. How on earth

  472. could the disciples

  473. organize it

  474. that they have,

  475. Psalm 22

  476. would be fulfilled

  477. of somebody gambling

  478. for Jesus' clothes?

  479. It's the soldiers,

  480. the pagan soldiers,

  481. the enemies of Jesus,

  482. the imperial power

  483. that does it.

  484. And later on,

  485. you're going to see

  486. in a moment

  487. that the reason normally,

  488. remember I said

  489. the normal Roman practice

  490. is that you left

  491. the crucified body

  492. on the cross

  493. and whether he died

  494. in a couple of minutes

  495. or whether he died

  496. in three days

  497. or five days

  498. or whatever,

  499. after he dies,

  500. you leave him

  501. on the cross

  502. until his body,

  503. you know,

  504. all the decomposition

  505. and the putrefaction,

  506. the smell,

  507. and that all happens

  508. and he wouldn't have been buried.

  509. And so all of the prophecies

  510. of Jesus rising

  511. from the grave

  512. would not have been fulfilled.

  513. The reason that those

  514. are fulfilled,

  515. of course,

  516. is the power of God,

  517. but that would not have happened

  518. if the Jewish leaders

  519. did not insist

  520. that the bodies die

  521. before the normal Roman practice

  522. not be followed

  523. and Jesus is put in a tomb.

  524. Time and time and time again,

  525. the enemies of Jesus

  526. unwittingly fulfill

  527. the prophecies.

  528. It is not something

  529. that Jesus

  530. and his disciples

  531. orchestrate.

  532. And this is,

  533. just to think about it,

  534. that God could say something

  535. through David

  536. a thousand years earlier

  537. and then he keeps

  538. his word.

  539. That's why we read the Bible.

  540. He keeps his word.

  541. So what happens?

  542. There's still,

  543. look at verse 25.

  544. Remember I said

  545. this is an eyewitness biography

  546. and we hear now

  547. of some of the eyewitnesses.

  548. In fact,

  549. we hear of five

  550. of the eyewitnesses

  551. that are going to be

  552. very important probably

  553. even in the writing of this.

  554. Verse 25,

  555. but standing by the cross

  556. of Jesus

  557. were his mother

  558. and his mother's sister,

  559. second woman,

  560. and Mary,

  561. the wife of Clopas,

  562. a third woman,

  563. and Mary Magdalene,

  564. the fourth woman.

  565. And when Jesus

  566. saw his,

  567. and just pause here,

  568. in the original language

  569. you can't get this

  570. in the English.

  571. And I'm not going to say

  572. very much of it

  573. because on Friday

  574. we're going to have

  575. people talking about

  576. the last words

  577. of the cross,

  578. but,

  579. you know,

  580. the Old Testament,

  581. what we call

  582. the Old Testament

  583. was written in Hebrew,

  584. but very early on,

  585. like at the time of Jesus,

  586. most people,

  587. when they read

  588. the Old Testament,

  589. most Jewish people,

  590. they read it actually

  591. in the Greek version,

  592. the Greek translation

  593. of the Hebrew.

  594. And in the Greek translation

  595. of the Hebrew,

  596. if you're reading it,

  597. if you read Genesis 2

  598. and Genesis 3,

  599. whenever it talks about Eve

  600. in Genesis 2

  601. and Genesis 3,

  602. it uses the word woman,

  603. the same word

  604. that Jesus speaks to Mary.

  605. I don't know what it means,

  606. and maybe Peter's going to say

  607. a few things about it

  608. come on Good Friday,

  609. but it's the same word,

  610. and there's ties in between this

  611. because,

  612. as you see,

  613. Jesus is crucified in the garden,

  614. he's buried in the garden,

  615. and in the garden,

  616. there's a woman

  617. who uses the same word

  618. to refer to all women,

  619. or Eve,

  620. is used to refer to Mary.

  621. It's just one of those

  622. interesting,

  623. there's so many things in here,

  624. there's so many things in here

  625. that poets and theologians

  626. and musicians

  627. and hymn writers

  628. and philosophers

  629. and dreamers,

  630. you can look at it

  631. and meditate upon it

  632. for year upon year

  633. upon year

  634. and never plumb the depths.

  635. Go back to it,

  636. verse 25 again,

  637. but standing by the cross

  638. of Jesus

  639. where his mother,

  640. the first woman,

  641. his mother's sister,

  642. the second woman,

  643. the third woman,

  644. Mary,

  645. the wife of Clopas,

  646. and then the fourth woman,

  647. Mary Magdalene,

  648. when Jesus saw his mother

  649. and the disciple

  650. whom he loved

  651. standing nearby,

  652. he said to his mother,

  653. Woman,

  654. behold your son.

  655. Then he said to the disciple,

  656. Behold your mother.

  657. From that hour,

  658. the disciple took her

  659. to his own home.

  660. And I just want to pause here

  661. for a second.

  662. There's a really important thing.

  663. You know,

  664. we take these last words

  665. of Jesus for granted,

  666. but one of the things

  667. out of the four biographies,

  668. there's things in this biography

  669. that John doesn't talk about

  670. that the others talk about.

  671. There's not going to be

  672. the darkness,

  673. there's not going to be

  674. the earthquakes,

  675. there's not going to be

  676. the rending of the temple.

  677. There's things that

  678. John doesn't tell us about.

  679. He tells us other things.

  680. Three of Jesus'

  681. final seven words

  682. from the cross

  683. are recorded by John.

  684. But do you know

  685. what the final words

  686. of Buddha were

  687. before he died?

  688. Like,

  689. Buddha was probably

  690. an historical person.

  691. And do you know

  692. what the final words

  693. of Buddha were?

  694. They were,

  695. I exhort you,

  696. all compound things

  697. are subject to vanish.

  698. And his final words,

  699. strive with earnestness.

  700. In other words,

  701. unceasingly strive.

  702. It's very,

  703. very interesting,

  704. right?

  705. When he says

  706. the compound,

  707. when he says

  708. all compound things

  709. are subject to vanish,

  710. right?

  711. It's a key part of Buddhism

  712. that I might think

  713. that I'm different than Helen,

  714. but I'm mistaken.

  715. That's an illusion.

  716. I might think

  717. that I want

  718. to have more money

  719. or I'd like to have

  720. a nicer car

  721. or a nicer house.

  722. If you're single,

  723. you might think

  724. you'd like to have

  725. a wife or a husband,

  726. but that's all,

  727. it's an illusion

  728. to think that there's difference.

  729. And at the end

  730. of the end

  731. of the end

  732. of all of the processes,

  733. you come to realize

  734. that it's all illusion,

  735. that there is no difference

  736. between things

  737. and that all is one.

  738. And then he says

  739. to keep striving

  740. for this unfailingly

  741. with earnestness.

  742. And it's so interesting,

  743. isn't it?

  744. Jesus' final words

  745. are so different.

  746. We're going to see here

  747. in a moment

  748. that he looks at his mother

  749. whom he loves

  750. and he looks at the disciple

  751. and he looks at the woman

  752. and he doesn't say,

  753. Mom,

  754. you're just an illusion.

  755. I hope you come to realize

  756. that there's no you

  757. and me.

  758. It's just,

  759. it's all going to vanish.

  760. He says,

  761. no, Mom,

  762. this guy's going to

  763. take care of you.

  764. Friend,

  765. take care of my mom.

  766. He's going to say,

  767. I thirst.

  768. He's going to say,

  769. it's finished.

  770. Very, very different.

  771. But the difference

  772. between the dying words

  773. of Jesus

  774. and the dying words

  775. of Muhammad

  776. are terrifying.

  777. Muhammad died

  778. in the home of Aisha.

  779. Aisha.

  780. Aisha is the woman

  781. that Muhammad married

  782. when she was six.

  783. I'm not making that up.

  784. And he didn't consummate

  785. the marriage

  786. with this six-year-old

  787. right away.

  788. He waited

  789. until she was nine

  790. before he consummated

  791. his marriage.

  792. And he was with

  793. this woman

  794. nine years later.

  795. She was 18

  796. when he died.

  797. And it's recorded

  798. that he talks about

  799. four things

  800. as he's dying.

  801. The first thing

  802. he says

  803. is he curses

  804. all Christians

  805. and Jews.

  806. Curses them.

  807. The second thing

  808. he says

  809. is gives orders

  810. to his followers

  811. to make sure

  812. that every pagan

  813. is expelled

  814. from the peninsula.

  815. They can convert.

  816. If they don't convert

  817. and they don't get

  818. expelled,

  819. they are to be killed.

  820. The third thing

  821. he says

  822. on his deathbed

  823. is that he hopes

  824. that when he dies,

  825. which will be very soon,

  826. that he will get

  827. the highest place

  828. in heaven.

  829. And the fourth thing

  830. that he says

  831. is he's recorded

  832. begging Allah

  833. for forgiveness.

  834. And Jesus

  835. says,

  836. Mom,

  837. here's the guy

  838. who's going to take care of you.

  839. friend,

  840. take care of my mom.

  841. And he's going to say,

  842. I thirst.

  843. And he's going to say,

  844. it is finished.

  845. And these are the final words

  846. of Jesus

  847. in comparison

  848. to the two great alternatives

  849. to Christianity

  850. in the Western world

  851. of Buddhism

  852. and Islam.

  853. You see,

  854. we take for granted

  855. these final words

  856. of Jesus

  857. without realizing

  858. how profoundly

  859. radical

  860. they are

  861. in the sea

  862. of religious options

  863. before us.

  864. The story continues.

  865. Verse 28.

  866. After this,

  867. Jesus,

  868. knowing that all

  869. was now finished,

  870. said to fulfill

  871. the scriptures,

  872. I thirst.

  873. A jar full of sour wine

  874. stood there,

  875. so they put a sponge

  876. full of the sour wine

  877. on a hyssop branch

  878. and held it to his mouth.

  879. When Jesus had received

  880. the sour wine,

  881. he said,

  882. it is finished.

  883. In the original language,

  884. that's one word.

  885. It is finished.

  886. It takes three words

  887. in English,

  888. but it's one word

  889. in the original language.

  890. And he bowed his head

  891. and gave up his spirit.

  892. And in the original language,

  893. the phrase

  894. gave up his spirit

  895. in all of the Bible

  896. from Genesis 1

  897. to the end of Revelation,

  898. that way of expressing death

  899. is never used

  900. of any other person.

  901. And it,

  902. in the original language,

  903. implies that Jesus

  904. couldn't have died

  905. against his will.

  906. that he had to actually

  907. allow death,

  908. in a sense,

  909. to consume him.

  910. And that he willingly

  911. allows death

  912. to take him.

  913. And his final words here

  914. are,

  915. it is finished.

  916. And it's a telos word.

  917. It's a word

  918. that's very foreign

  919. to how we tend

  920. to think of

  921. in terms of our own lives.

  922. It's a word

  923. that implies

  924. that there's a purpose,

  925. not just a purpose

  926. that he has grasped

  927. for himself,

  928. but a real purpose,

  929. an ontological purpose,

  930. a purpose

  931. that's been given

  932. to him by God,

  933. by the creator

  934. of the universe,

  935. and that his whole life

  936. had a series of things

  937. that he had to accomplish

  938. and that he had to finish

  939. on behalf of others,

  940. and that as he's dying

  941. on the cross,

  942. that has occurred.

  943. Everything that had

  944. to be completed

  945. was completed.

  946. Everything that had

  947. to be accomplished

  948. was accomplished.

  949. It was finished.

  950. There was nothing left over.

  951. Everything that he came

  952. to earth to do

  953. was done

  954. with not a drop

  955. left over.

  956. That's what he's saying

  957. there in his death.

  958. And then we have here

  959. in a very small

  960. and subtle way

  961. this continual critique

  962. of religion

  963. in verse 31.

  964. Since it was the day

  965. of preparation

  966. and so that the bodies

  967. would not remain

  968. on the cross

  969. on the Sabbath day

  970. for that Sabbath

  971. was a high day,

  972. the Jewish religious leaders,

  973. the spiritual leaders,

  974. asked Pilate

  975. that their legs

  976. might be broken

  977. and that they might

  978. be taken away.

  979. How is this a critique

  980. of religion?

  981. They have just spent

  982. weeks if not months

  983. and an intense,

  984. intense

  985. eight hours

  986. or twelve hours

  987. capturing Jesus

  988. and hectoring

  989. for his judicial murder.

  990. But they're worried

  991. that a tiny

  992. little commandment

  993. in Deuteronomy

  994. will be broken

  995. by having the bodies

  996. displayed.

  997. It is a profound

  998. critique

  999. of the inadequacy

  1000. of even

  1001. the best religion

  1002. in this small

  1003. aside.

1004. And as I said earlier,

  1005. against their will

  1006. they act

  1007. to fulfill

  1008. the scripture.

  1009. Verse 32,

  1010. so the soldiers

  1011. came and broke

  1012. the legs

  1013. of the first

  1014. and of the other

  1015. who had been

  1016. crucified with him.

  1017. But when they came

  1018. to Jesus

  1019. they saw that

  1020. he was already dead

  1021. and they did not

  1022. break his legs.

  1023. Why?

  1024. They'd see that

  1025. he was not breathing.

  1026. Not only that,

  1027. they'd see that

  1028. he'd stopped bleeding.

  1029. Remember,

  1030. he'd had thorns

  1031. in his head.

  1032. He'd been whipped

  1033. mercilessly

  1034. on his back.

  1035. He stopped bleeding.

  1036. These guys

  1037. were used to death.

  1038. He wasn't breathing.

1039. But one of the ways

  1040. that they might have,

  1041. there's lots of

  1042. historical evidence

  1043. of this.

  1044. One of the ways

  1045. they would just see

  1046. if he's still alive

  1047. is you go to,

  1048. you poke him.

  1049. You make some pain

  1050. and if the person

  1051. jerks,

  1052. obviously,

  1053. oh,

  1054. there's a bit of life

1055. left in that person still

  1056. and it was

  1057. an ungentle

  1058. pricking,

  1059. a pricking

  1060. that actually went

  1061. and pierced

  1062. between the ribs

  1063. and went right

  1064. up to the heart.

  1065. But when they came,

  1066. verse 33,

  1067. to Jesus

  1068. and saw that

  1069. he was already dead,

  1070. they did not

  1071. break his legs.

1072. But one of the soldiers

  1073. pierced his side

  1074. with a spear

  1075. and at once

  1076. there came out

  1077. blood and water.

  1078. He who saw it

  1079. has borne witness,

  1080. his testimony is true

  1081. and he knows

  1082. that he is telling

  1083. the truth

  1084. that you may believe.

  1085. For these things

  1086. took place

  1087. that the scripture

  1088. might be fulfilled.

1089. Not one of his bones

  1090. will be broken.

  1091. And again,

  1092. another scripture says

1093. they will look on him

  1094. whom they have pierced.

  1095. And after these things,

  1096. Joseph of Arimathea,

  1097. who was a disciple

  1098. of Jesus,

  1099. but secretly

1100. for fear of the Jews,

  1101. asked Pilate

1102. that he might take away

  1103. the body of Jesus.

  1104. Remember all these times,

  1105. the piercing,

  1106. the body,

  1107. the language,

  1108. he's dead.

  1109. And Pilate

  1110. gave him permission.

  1111. So Joseph came

1112. and took away his body.

  1113. Nicodemus also,

  1114. who earlier had come

  1115. to Jesus by night,

  1116. came bringing a mixture

  1117. of myrrh and aloes,

1118. about 75 pounds in weight.

  1119. So they took

  1120. the body of Jesus

  1121. and bound it

  1122. in linen cloths

  1123. really tight

  1124. with the spices

1125. as is the burial custom

  1126. of the Jewish people.

  1127. Now in the place

  1128. where he was crucified,

  1129. there was a garden

  1130. and in the garden

  1131. a new tomb

  1132. in which no one

  1133. had yet been laid.

1134. No one had yet been laid.

  1135. Setting the stage

  1136. for the resurrection,

  1137. there's no other bodies

  1138. in there.

  1139. It's not like

1140. it would be very common

  1141. to have a grave

  1142. that had many bodies

  1143. in it.

  1144. They found them.

  1145. Archaeologists find them

  1146. all the time.

1147. But in this particular grave,

  1148. it's brand new.

1149. No other bodies in there.

1150. There's not going to be

  1151. any confusion

  1152. when they come in

  1153. and say,

  1154. did Jesus rise?

  1155. Okay, let's just

  1156. all these other bodies

  1157. to see if...

  1158. We're one short,

  1159. but is it Jesus?

  1160. No, no.

  1161. It's setting the stage

1162. and it's going to be

  1163. a tomb,

  1164. a limestone cave,

1165. no other way into it,

1166. no way to dig into it.

  1167. It's setting the stage

  1168. for the miracle

  1169. of the resurrection.

  1170. Verse 41 again,

1171. And now in the place

  1172. where he was crucified,

  1173. there was a garden

  1174. and the garden

  1175. a new tomb

  1176. in which no one

  1177. had been laid.

  1178. So because of the

  1179. Jewish day of preparation,

  1180. since the tomb

  1181. was close at hand,

  1182. they laid Jesus there.

1183. Now just a couple of things

  1184. to bring this home

  1185. as a bit of a conclusion.

  1186. I was watching a movie

  1187. this week,

1188. no surprise to many of you.

  1189. I like watching

  1190. things like movies

  1191. and all,

  1192. and I was watching

  1193. a movie this week

1194. and part of the movie

1195. is that a young boy,

1196. six or seven year old boy,

  1197. his mom dies

  1198. and he gets sent

1199. to live with his eccentric

  1200. and scientific uncle.

  1201. His uncle's consumed

  1202. with science.

1203. And so the little boy,

  1204. his mom has died.

1205. They don't make any comment

  1206. about the biological dad.

1207. Seems to be out of the picture.

  1208. So the boy comes

  1209. and he's with this

  1210. eccentric scientific guy

1211. and the boy out of the blue

1212. says that my mom died

  1213. and the guy says,

  1214. oh yeah,

  1215. I know,

  1216. that's sad.

  1217. And she said,

  1218. well,

  1219. she's in heaven.

  1220. And without thinking,

  1221. the guy says,

  1222. that's a fairy tale.

  1223. That's a fairy tale.

  1224. She's dead.

  1225. When you die,

  1226. you die.

1227. And he sees the little face

  1228. start to crumble.

  1229. And he says,

1230. but if that gives you comfort

1231. and makes you feel good,

1232. then you should believe that.

  1233. You should believe that.

  1234. Don't listen to me.

  1235. You believe that.

  1236. So he's not completely

  1237. hard-hearted.

  1238. But he just speaks

  1239. like a scientist.

  1240. When you're dead,

  1241. you're dead.

  1242. So here's,

1243. there are not going to be

  1244. points that are up

  1245. on the screen.

  1246. I might put them

1247. in some type of writing

  1248. later on.

  1249. They'll be posted later.

  1250. But there's two things

  1251. going on here.

  1252. You see,

  1253. what people are observing,

  1254. remember I said

1255. the death of a troublesome Jew

  1256. is not particularly significant.

  1257. There's no religious

  1258. significance for it

  1259. in particular.

  1260. And what the people

  1261. there were seeing

  1262. was the tragic death

  1263. of a problematic man.

  1264. What people were seeing

  1265. was the tragic death

  1266. of a problematic man.

1267. But what God wants us

  1268. to see and understand

  1269. is fairy tales

  1270. becoming fact.

  1271. Myth becoming fact.

  1272. What the crowd sees

  1273. is the tragic death

  1274. of a problematic man.

1275. But what God wants us

  1276. to see

  1277. is that fairy tales

  1278. and myths

  1279. have become fact.

  1280. See,

1281. the fact of the matter

  1282. is that

  1283. if Jesus just stays

  1284. dead,

  1285. then really

  1286. that is just

  1287. one more case

  1288. that in fact

  1289. all life

  1290. is tragedy.

  1291. All life

  1292. is tragedy.

  1293. When you die,

  1294. you die.

  1295. And some people

  1296. die young,

  1297. some people die old,

  1298. but when you die,

  1299. you die.

  1300. And you lose everything.

1301. And you can't even hope

  1302. that you'll be remembered

  1303. for very long.

  1304. Conan O'Brien

1305. has this very interesting thing

  1306. where he realizes

  1307. one day

  1308. that

  1309. he won't be remembered

  1310. very long.

  1311. within a certain period

  1312. of time,

  1313. nobody remembers you

  1314. that long

  1315. and you'll be completely

  1316. and utterly forgotten

  1317. and when you die,

  1318. you die.

  1319. That's just the way

  1320. life is.

  1321. It's all life a tragedy.

1322. But the fact of the matter

1323. is that we human beings,

  1324. we don't like tragedies.

  1325. Movies that are made

  1326. where everything ends

1327. with the bad guys win,

1328. the good guys all die,

  1329. those movies don't go

  1330. very well

  1331. at the box office.

  1332. On one hand,

  1333. science

  1334. and serious philosophy

  1335. tells you

1336. that it's all just tragedy,

  1337. that in fact,

  1338. you know,

1339. the fact of the matter

1340. is in the real world,

1341. Idi Amin did horrendous things

  1342. in Uganda,

1343. but he died a rich man

  1344. in another country.

  1345. Stalin did horrendous things,

  1346. but he dies

  1347. in his bed.

  1348. Yeah,

1349. you have Hitler who died,

  1350. but you know,

1351. lots and lots of times,

  1352. horrendously evil people

  1353. die natural deaths,

  1354. not facing any type

  1355. of judgment

1356. and that's the real world

1357. and the fact of the matter

  1358. is even for them,

  1359. when you die,

  1360. you die.

1361. But the fact of the matter

  1362. is that what we,

1363. the movies that do well

  1364. end with a wedding.

  1365. They end with applause.

  1366. They end with justice.

  1367. Triumphing

  1368. and being reestablished.

  1369. That's the movies

  1370. that we actually watch.

  1371. It's the movies

  1372. that serious thinkers

  1373. say are fairy tales.

1374. And what we're to see here

  1375. is that fairy tale

  1376. has become fact.

  1377. That myth

  1378. has become fact.

  1379. And that's what God

  1380. wants us to understand.

  1381. The only reason

  1382. we can believe this,

  1383. of course,

1384. is that as we'll see

  1385. next week,

  1386. that Jesus really rises

  1387. from the dead.

  1388. If he didn't rise

  1389. from the dead,

  1390. then in fact,

  1391. all life is tragedy.

  1392. It is not comedy.

  1393. All life is tragedy.

  1394. But if in fact,

1395. he rises from the dead,

1396. that makes this particular death

  1397. and the fulfillment

1398. inherent in all of his life

  1399. and in his death

  1400. and in his resurrection,

1401. it means there is a God

  1402. that does exist.

1403. There can be purpose in life.

1404. There can be meaning in life.

  1405. And it means that,

  1406. in fact,

  1407. death does not have

  1408. the final word.

  1409. That the myths

  1410. and the fairy tales

  1411. which we long for

  1412. once became fact.

  1413. And that means

  1414. there is the possibility

1415. that in your life and mine,

  1416. life is not,

1417. death is not the final word.

  1418. Injustice is not

  1419. the final word.

  1420. This decomposition

1421. is not the final word,

1422. but the final word is life.

  1423. You see,

1424. this is all part of,

  1425. if you go back

1426. and you read the beginning

  1427. of John's Gospel,

1428. the beginning of John's Gospel

  1429. begins like this.

1430. In the beginning was the Word

1431. and the Word was with God

1432. and the Word was God.

  1433. He was with God

  1434. in the beginning.

  1435. All things were made

  1436. through him

  1437. and without him

  1438. nothing was made

  1439. that was made.

  1440. In him was life

  1441. and the life

1442. was the light of men.

1443. That's the first five verses

  1444. in John's Gospel.

  1445. And so you see,

  1446. what we see here

  1447. in John's Gospel

  1448. is John is telling

1449. not only the story of Jesus,

1450. but he's telling the story

  1451. of Jesus

  1452. in combination

1453. with a far bigger story.

1454. And in that bigger story,

  1455. John is saying this,

  1456. that what caused

  1457. all things to be,

  1458. all things that exist

  1459. were created

  1460. by a combination

  1461. of life,

  1462. light,

  1463. and love.

  1464. Life,

  1465. light,

  1466. and love.

  1467. That is the source

  1468. of all things

  1469. that exist.

  1470. But human beings

  1471. turned away from God

  1472. to be God themselves.

  1473. And what happens

  1474. when you turn away

  1475. from life?

  1476. You walk towards death.

  1477. What happens

  1478. when you turn away

  1479. from light?

  1480. You walk towards darkness.

  1481. What happens

  1482. when you turn away

  1483. from love?

  1484. You turn towards

  1485. indifference

  1486. and hatred.

  1487. And human beings

  1488. become addicted

  1489. to turning towards death

  1490. and turning towards darkness

  1491. and turning towards

  1492. hatred and indifference.

  1493. And so God,

  1494. the Son of God,

  1495. comes and dwells

  1496. among us

  1497. as one of us.

1498. The light of the world

  1499. walks amongst those

  1500. who love darkness.

1501. The life of the world

  1502. comes amongst those

  1503. who will die

  1504. and go towards death

  1505. and even choose death.

  1506. And the love

  1507. of the world

  1508. comes and walks

  1509. amongst those

  1510. who choose

  1511. indifference

  1512. and hatred.

1513. And he doesn't just come

  1514. as a tourist

  1515. to observe,

  1516. but his comes

  1517. amongst us

  1518. even to the point

  1519. that life

  1520. takes on

  1521. my death

  1522. and yours.

  1523. Light

  1524. takes on

  1525. my darkness

  1526. and yours.

  1527. Love

  1528. takes on

  1529. my indifference

  1530. and hatred

  1531. and yours.

  1532. And he,

  1533. light,

  1534. bears the darkness.

  1535. Love

  1536. bears the hatred.

  1537. Life

  1538. bears death.

  1539. That's the importance

  1540. of this tiny phrase,

  1541. I thirst.

  1542. I thirst.

  1543. Because Jesus

  1544. is described

  1545. earlier as

  1546. living water,

  1547. as the life

  1548. of the world.

  1549. And he thirsts.

  1550. He is taking

  1551. the darkness,

  1552. the death,

  1553. and the hatred

  1554. into himself

  1555. in a sense

  1556. swallowing

  1557. and dealing

  1558. with that

  1559. which we cannot

  1560. deal with

  1561. ourselves.

  1562. And he arises,

  1563. as we will see

  1564. on Easter Sunday,

  1565. that life

  1566. conquers

  1567. death.

  1568. Love

  1569. conquers

  1570. hatred

  1571. and indifference.

  1572. Light

  1573. triumphs

  1574. over

  1575. darkness.

  1576. And he does it

  1577. for you and me.

  1578. that when we put

  1579. our faith

  1580. and trust

  1581. in him,

  1582. we are sharing

  1583. in his conquest

  1584. for us.

  1585. Please stand.

  1586. Thank you.

  1587. Thank you.

  1588. Let's pray.

1589. Father, we give you thanks and praise for Jesus,

1590. and we thank and praise you that when he dealt with death,

1591. he dealt with it, it was finished.

1592. We give you thanks and praise that when he dealt with darkness, it was finished.

1593. We give you thanks and praise that when he dealt with hatred and indifference, it was finished.

1594. And we thank and praise you, Father, that when we put our faith and trust in Jesus,

1595. that we share in his finished work over those things.

1596. We give you thanks and praise that when we put our faith and trust in Jesus,

1597. our destiny, Father, is sure.

1598. That the light is our destiny.

1599. That love is our destiny.

1600. That life is our destiny.

1601. Father, on this side of the grave, we still have so many things within us that are addicted to darkness

1602. and addicted to death and addicted to a difference and addicted to hatred.

1603. We give you thanks and praise, Father, that the work of Jesus, it is finished.

1604. It is finished for us.

1605. That when we put our faith in him, the final word will not be those things of hatred.

1606. But, Father, you know how much we struggle now.

1607. And we ask that you grip us with the gospel.

1608. Grip us, Father, with the triumph of life and light and love.

1609. And so help us to be confident in his finished work that with Jesus we might have the confidence and the humility

1610. to look at the darkness and death and hatred and indifference in our own lives.

1611. And as we are gripped by the gospel to deal with it.

1612. That you might give us such a confidence in the finished work of Jesus that we might not only look at the death and darkness and hatred and indifference of our own lives,

1613. but of our families, of our places of work, of our city, of our country, and of our world.

1614. And that you might use us, Father, to walk towards that, to share the gospel.

1615. And be used by you to lessen the darkness and lessen the death and lessen the hatred and lessen the indifference.

1616. As we are used by you to bless the city and bless the world to your great glory.

1617. And, Father, we ask that you would do these mighty works in our lives.

1618. Imperfect people as we are.

1619. May your Holy Spirit move with might and power within us to make us disciples of Jesus' grip by the gospel.

1620. Learning to live for your glory.

1621. And we ask these things in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior.

  1622. Amen.
