  1. We're going to spend a few minutes in prayer, and so will you join me as we pray together?

  2. We're going to pray for ourselves and for our city.

  3. Let's come before our Father.

  4. Heavenly Father, loving Lord, sovereign God, merciful Christ, we come before you this morning,

  5. God, because we are so in need of you.

  6. Lord, we sang that song earlier, but how long, God?

  7. And there's a part of our hearts that longs for that day, Christ, when sin and evil will be removed from our world.

  8. We will be fully reconciled with you, God.

  9. God, our hearts cry out, come soon, Lord Jesus.

  10. Lord, this world is not a home, and we long for our home to be with you, Christ, again.

  11. God, but thank you that while you've called us for the season, for this to be a home,

  12. for while we live in this world, God, you're so gracious.

  13. You're so merciful.

  14. God, thank you that while we go through trials and struggles, you, God, do not abandon us.

  15. You're with us in the midst of it.

  16. You're such a faithful God.

  17. God, when we consider your many attributes, your holiness and your sovereignty,

  18. but also your mercy and your tenderness, your righteousness, Lord, but also your grace, God,

  19. your faithfulness to us, God.

  20. We are brought to our knees, and we cannot help but worship your great and glorious name.

  21. God, we come to lift our sights off of our circumstances around us and to worship you

  22. and to declare that you are God and there is no other.

  23. And so we've come to do that this morning.

  24. God, we worship you not only for who you are, but also for what you've done in the gospel.

  25. Thank you, Christ, that we are saved by the blood of Jesus, not by silver or gold.

  26. We're not saved by our own efforts, but simply through grace alone, God.

  27. We revel in your death on the cross, and we take great confidence in it.

  28. Thank you, Jesus, so much for your grace.

  29. Thank you, Jesus, for going to the cross for us.

  30. We so love you, Lord.

  31. Christ, this morning we want to pray for the preaching of your word as we come to Revelation 11.

  32. We pray, God, that you'll speak to us, God.

  33. We pray your word will come alive, God.

  34. As a church, we don't need to hear my opinions.

  35. We need to hear you speaking to us from your word.

  36. And so, God, as we come to your word, I pray it'll open up in our hearts,

  37. and you'll speak truth and confidence, God.

  38. You'll reassure us of the gospel, but also of your sovereignty.

  39. God, I pray let your word speak to us this morning, God.

  40. Comfort us and challenge us with your word.

  41. Father, this morning we want to pray for Amelia again.

  42. And just hearing from her is so wonderful.

  43. Lord, we bring her work to the Hakka community in Taiwan before you.

  44. And, Father, this morning we want to ask that you will continue to pour out your amazing grace on her.

  45. God, won't you strengthen her and encourage her, Father God,

  46. when at times it is lonely, at times she may feel isolated.

  47. I pray your spirit will draw near to her and she will know your presence and your love, God.

  48. I pray, God, for increased friends and friendships, God, and deeper friendships.

  49. I pray for real sisters there that she can pour her heart to and share her life with, God.

  50. And, Father, as she goes into this internship in this local church in Taichung,

  51. God, we pray that you'll bless her work.

  52. I pray she'll feel your smile upon her, God.

  53. We pray for Amelia and we ask for your blessing to rest upon her.

  54. God, we pray for Joanne in Japan who's just gone back this week.

  55. We pray that you strengthen her and her work in Japan amongst the Japanese people.

  56. God, thank you for these faithful women of God that have answered your call to the mission field.

  57. And we pray that you strengthen them, Lord.

  58. Father, finally, we want to pray for our city.

  59. We want to pray for particularly the march that's planned for this afternoon.

  60. We thank you, God, for a relatively peaceful weekend.

  61. And, Father, we pray for peace to reign this afternoon, God.

  62. God, we pray that there won't be violence.

  63. Pray that people will stay safe.

  64. Pray there won't be bloodshed, God.

  65. We pray for peace this afternoon, God, in our city, Lord.

  66. Father, we pray for healing and wholeness to come to our city, God.

  67. We pray that we will hear your voice and see what you are doing and what you want to say to us.

  68. Thank you, God, that how Hebrews says you are shaking the kingdoms of this world

  69. to show that your kingdom is unshakable.

  70. But, God, we do pray for our city.

  71. We pray for the police.

  72. We pray for our political leaders.

  73. We pray for protesters.

  74. And we pray for peace to be restored to our city, God.

  75. We pray these things in your wonderful and your powerful name.

  76. Amen.

  77. Amen.

  78. Great.

  79. We're going to listen to Revelation chapter 11 being read to us by Betty and Jonas.

    Revelation 11 chapter mention

  80. So, come on up.

  81. Amen.

  82. Amen.

  83. Amen.

  84. Amen.

  85. The scripture reading comes from Revelation chapter 10 to 11.

    Revelation 10 chapter mention

  86. Please follow along in your bulletin or on the screen.

  87. Then the voice that I heard from heaven spoke to me again, saying,

  88. Go, take the scroll that is open in the hand of the angel who is standing on the sea and on the land.

  89. So I went to the angel, and I told him to give me the little scroll.

  90. And he said to me, Take and eat it. It will make your stomach bitter.

  91. But in your mouth it will be sweet as honey.

  92. And I took the little scroll from the hand of the angel, and I ate it.

  93. It was sweet as honey in my mouth.

  94. But when I had eaten it, my stomach was made better.

  95. And I was told, You must again prophesy about many peoples and nations and languages and kings.

  96. Then I was given a measuring rod like a staff.

  97. And I was told, Rise and measure the temple of God and the altar and those who worship there.

  98. But do not measure the court outside the temple.

  99. Leave that out.

  100. For it is given over to the nations.

  101. And they will trample the holy city for 42 months.

  102. And I will grant authority to my two witnesses.

  103. And they will prophesy for 1,260 days cloth and sackcloth.

  104. These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of the earth.

  105. And if anyone would harm them, fire pours from their mouth and consumes their foes.

  106. If anyone would harm them, this is how he is doomed to be killed.

  107. They have the power to shut the sky, that no rain may fall during the days of their prophesying.

  108. And they have power over the waters to turn them into blood and to strike the earth with every kind of plague as often as they desire.

  109. And when they have finished their testimony, the beast that rises from the bottomless pit will make war on them and conquer them and kill them.

  110. And their dead bodies will lie in the street of the great city that symbolically is called Sodom in Egypt, where their Lord was crucified.

  111. For three and a half days, some from the peoples and tribes and languages and nations will gaze at their dead bodies and refuse to let them be placed in a tomb.

  112. And those who dwell on the earth will rejoice over them and make merry and exchange presents.

  113. Because these two prophets had been a torment to those who dwell on the earth.

  114. But after the three and a half days, a breath of life from God entered them, and they stood up on their feet, and great fear fell on those who saw them.

  115. Then they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, Come up here.

  116. And they went up to heaven in a cloud, and their enemies watched them.

  117. And at that hour there was a great earthquake, and a tenth of the city fell.

  118. Seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the rest were terrified and gave glory to God of heaven.

  119. The second woe has passed.

  120. Behold, the third woe is soon to come.

  121. Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven saying,

  122. The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever.

  123. And the twenty-four elders who sat on their thrones before God fell on their faces and worshipped God, saying,

  124. We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty, who is and who was, for you have taken your great power and begun to reign.

  125. The nations raged, but your wrath came, and the time for the dead to be judged, and for rewarding your servants.

  126. The prophets and saints and those who fear your name, both small and great, and for destroying the destroyers of the earth.

  127. Then God's temple in heaven was opened, and the ark of his covenant was seen within his temple.

  128. There were flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, an earthquake, and heavy hail.

  129. This is the word of God.

  130. Amen.

  131. Okay.

  132. Great.

  133. Thank you so much, Betty and Jonas.

  134. If you are new to Watermark, we are working our way through the book of Revelation, and we are about halfway through.

  135. We are in chapter 11 today of 21, 22 chapters.

  136. And you'll see, if you've got your Bible in front of you, the next chapter is called The Woman and the Dragon, which sounds very ominous.

  137. We'll look at that in two weeks' time.

  138. Next Sunday, we have a visiting preacher, Ryuta, from Japan, from Tokyo.

  139. We'll be preaching, and we're looking forward to that.

  140. But we are working our way through Revelation, and the last two weeks have been quite challenging.

  141. I have found it quite hard work as we've gone through chapters 6 to 10.

  142. And last week, we ended off at the end of chapter 10.

  143. And the way it ends off, Betty read it to us this morning, is that John, in his vision, in his revelation, God says to him,

  144. Go to the angel that you saw, and ask the angel for the scroll that's in his hand.

  145. And so John goes, and the angel gives him the scroll.

  146. The scroll contains God's words.

  147. And the angel says, I want you to eat the scroll.

  148. And as you eat it, it's going to be sweet at first, but then it's going to become bitter.

  149. And so John goes, and exactly as the angel says, this is what happens.

  150. He, in his vision, eats the scroll.

  151. And it's sweet at first, and it soon becomes bitter in his mouth.

  152. And the angel tells him, this is because though God's gospel is sweet, as you speak out his words, you're going to get a bitter reaction.

  153. And this is a reference to the Old Testament book of Ezekiel, chapter 3, where the same thing happens.

    Ezekiel 3 chapter mention

  154. Ezekiel has a vision to eat the scroll.

  155. And in his vision, God tells him, Ezekiel, you are to speak my words out.

  156. And some people will receive the message that you are bringing, and the reaction will be sweet.

  157. But some people will reject it, and the reaction will be bitter.

  158. But don't mind about people's reaction.

  159. That's not your responsibility.

  160. Your job is to speak God's word out, whether they receive it or not.

  161. And so the point that God gives to Ezekiel, and that God gives to John, and to the seven churches of Revelation,

  162. and the point that he gives to us, is that even though at times there's a bitter reaction to the proclaiming of the gospel,

  163. our job is to witness and evangelize, and we must do it nevertheless.

  164. Okay, so that's how chapter 10 ended.

  165. Now chapter 11, which we're going to look at today, picks up on this idea.

  166. And in it, Jesus is going to show John that despite opposition to the message of the gospel,

  167. Jesus is showing John how it is that the gospel is going to go forward in the earth,

  168. how it is that God's kingdom is going to come to the world,

  169. and how it is that God accomplishes his purposes in the earth.

  170. Okay, so that's where we're going today in chapter 11.

  171. And so let's look at how it starts off.

  172. And the first thing is, God says this,

  173. His kingdom comes in the midst of great suffering and opposition to his kingdom.

  174. Look at verse 1 to 3 with me.

  175. It says this,

  176. Then I was given a measuring rod, like a staff,

  177. and I was told, rise and measure the temple of God and those who worship there.

  178. But do not measure the outside, the court outside the temple.

  179. Leave that out, for that is given over to the nations.

  180. They will trample the holy city for 42 months.

  181. Okay?

  182. Now, there is so much in chapter 11 which is referencing two books in the Old Testament,

  183. the book of Ezekiel and the book of Zechariah.

  184. It's going to keep on coming up.

  185. In the book of Ezekiel, Ezekiel also has this vision.

  186. And in his vision, he has a temple, and he sees a man measuring out this temple.

  187. And what happened is that just before Ezekiel's day,

  188. the Babylonians come, 605 BC, they overthrow Jerusalem, and they destroy the temple.

  189. And Ezekiel has this vision of this new, grand, and glorious temple.

  190. This majestic temple in which God's presence is filled, and it fills the whole earth.

  191. Except Ezekiel's temple was never, ever built.

  192. It was never accomplished.

  193. And the reason is because Ezekiel's vision was a prophetic picture that God was saying

  194. of this is one day what the church is going to look like.

  195. This is the temple that my Christ is going to build.

  196. Not a temple made with bricks and concrete and stones.

  197. It's a temple made with people.

  198. The church is the new temple.

  199. But just outside the temple, there is this court.

  200. And John describes this outer court.

  201. And in it, he says there is chaos.

  202. The nations, that's those that oppose Christ, they are trampling this temple.

  203. They are destroying it.

  204. They're trying to overthrow it.

  205. There's absolute chaos happening outside as they try and destroy the church, God's people.

  206. And John says that this is allowed to happen for 42 months.

  207. Now, what on earth is 42 months?

  208. 42 months makes up three and a half years.

  209. Now, remember in the book of Revelation, there's this number that keeps on appearing.

  210. The number?

  211. Seven, right?

  212. And the number seven in the book of, or in the Bible, but especially in the book of Revelation,

  213. is the number of completeness, of fullness.

  214. In other words, when something happens seven times, God is telling us that this action is completed.

  215. Three and a half years is half of seven, which means that it's a limited period of time.

  216. God is saying for a shortened period of time, not for the whole of history, for a limited period of time,

  217. that I'm allowing, I will allow the nations, those that oppose me and my kingdom,

  218. to trample on my kingdom and to oppose my church and my purposes and the gospel going out in the nations.

  219. For a period of time, those that oppose me will be allowed to inflict difficulty on the kingdom of God on earth.

  220. And so, that's what God's saying.

  221. Now, the key question for those of us that are believers, and if you're here this morning and you're not yet a Christian,

  222. we're so glad you're here.

  223. You're so welcome.

  224. It's great to have you with us.

  225. But the question this passage asks for those of us that are Christians is this.

  226. When opposition and persecution comes our way, when following Jesus costs you dearly and you're reviled or rejected for it,

  227. what should you do?

  228. How should we respond?

  229. You see, for the Christians in the first century, being a follower of Jesus meant, at the very least,

  230. that they would be ostracized and kicked out from community.

  231. You'd go to the marketplace and you wouldn't worship the emperor, and so you'd be cut off from business deals.

  232. You'd be on the outskirts of society.

  233. You wouldn't be in the in crowd.

  234. As people are making business deals and arrangements and inviting people to social gatherings,

  235. you would kind of be at the bottom of the list, at the very least.

  236. But at worst case scenario, being a Christian in the first century meant being thrown to the lions

  237. or maybe being left to rot in some jail cell at the bottom of some building.

  238. And so how should these Christians in first century Roman Empire respond?

  239. Friends, how should you and I respond?

  240. Well, look at verse 3 with me.

  241. Look at what happens here.

  242. God says that during this time, for 1,260 days, which is the equivalent to 42 months,

  243. which is the equivalent to three and a half years,

  244. for this same time period, this limited period that God is allowing this to happen,

  245. rather than retreating into self-preservation,

  246. rather than thinking how to avoid suffering,

  247. Jesus sends his witnesses out to bear witness to the fact that Jesus is Lord.

  248. Look at what verse 3 says.

  249. I will grant authority to my two witnesses, says Christ,

  250. and they will prophesy, that means they will speak my word,

  251. for 1,260 days clothed in sackcloth.

  252. And so the first thing is, how does God accomplish his purposes?

  253. How does the gospel go forward in the world?

  254. It goes forward in the midst of suffering and opposition and persecution.

  255. But that leads us to the second thing, which is this.

  256. God's kingdom comes through Christian witness.

  257. You see, these two witnesses, why are they clothed in sackcloth?

  258. The answer is not because they're poor and they couldn't afford any other clothes.

  259. The reason is because in the Old Testament, when someone wore sackcloth,

  260. it was a symbol of calling people to repentance.

  261. It was a way of saying, Christ is Lord, and come back from rejecting him.

  262. And so while the church is being opposed because of their faithfulness to Jesus,

  263. God, at that very same time, he says,

  264. this is the time for his witnesses to speak out and to let the world know that Caesar is not Lord,

  265. Rome is not Lord, the systems of this world are not Lord, Christ is Lord.

  266. Jesus is Lord.

  267. Let the hope and the peace and the freedom that people are looking for and longing for

  268. is not found in the systems of this world.

  269. It's found in the person of Jesus.

  270. That was their message.

  271. And friends, that's still the message of the church today.

  272. See, again, if you're new to church here this morning,

  273. you may be surprised to hear that the message of the church is not primarily

  274. how to make your life more comfortable or convenient or better.

  275. That's not why Jesus came to earth.

  276. Now, following Jesus will sometimes make your life better.

  277. Sometimes it'll make it more inconvenient.

  278. But that's not the primary message of the gospel.

  279. The message of the church is not simply how to be a good citizen in society,

  280. although Christians should be good citizens in society.

  281. We should pursue peace and well-being.

  282. Friends, if you're new to church, you may be surprised to hear

  283. the goal of the church is not to make people feel better about themselves

  284. or improve themselves.

  285. Though if you believe the gospel, it does help you in the way that you think about yourself.

  286. Though, friends, the message of the church and the message of the gospel

  287. is that all people, Asians, Westerners, black, white, rich, poor,

  288. all people everywhere are under the consequences of our sin

  289. and that salvation and peace are found in no other source,

  290. no other solution other than coming to Christ and surrendering our lives to Him.

  291. This is the message of the church.

  292. And this is the message that the witnesses in verse 3 are given.

  293. Now, here's the question.

  294. Who are these two witnesses in Revelation chapter 11?

    Revelation 11 chapter mention

  295. Well, on the one hand, they are a picture John has at the back of his mind.

  296. He has these two great witnesses in the Old Testament

  297. that spoke up for the glory of God and the cause of Christ.

  298. He's thinking of Moses and he's thinking of Elijah.

  299. Remember, both Elijah and Moses stood firm in their testimony that God is God

  300. rather than the powers of their day, even in the face of great opposition.

  301. Remember, Moses stood up to Pharaoh, that pagan king of Egypt,

  302. and he demonstrated God's power through various plagues.

  303. Elijah stood up to Ahab, that wicked king of Israel,

  304. and he demonstrated God's power through amazing prayer.

  305. But at the same time, both Elijah and Moses face incredible opposition and persecution for their stand.

  306. Both of them at one point decide to run away and save themselves

  307. because the opposition is so fierce that they are convinced

  308. they're going to be killed by those that they are witnessing to.

  309. And yet both of them find that in the face of opposition,

  310. God is with them and empowering them for the task that he's called them to.

  311. And in this way, they are models for what all Christians should be.

  312. But then on the other hand, John here is writing,

  313. and he's thinking not just of these two,

  314. he's actually picturing all Christians everywhere throughout the ages.

  315. You see, we may think these two witnesses refer to Tim Keller and Billy Graham, right?

  316. The two great heroes of our age.

  317. Or John Piper, Ravi Zacharias.

  318. They're going to come and save the church.

  319. Or maybe we think they refer to the two missionaries,

  320. Joanne and Amelia.

  321. They're going to go out and take the gospel to Asia.

  322. Or maybe you think they refer to the pastors and the preachers.

  323. But look at verse 4.

  324. Look at what he says here.

  325. He calls them to lampstands.

  326. Now in the book of Revelation, what do lampstands always refer to?

  327. They refer to churches.

  328. That's right.

  329. They're like the church in Smyrna, or the church in Ephesus,

  330. or the church in Laodicea, or Philadelphia,

  331. or that church in Ebenezer.

  332. You see, the lampstands, which are the witnesses,

  333. are local congregations of God's people gathered that declare the wonder of God.

  334. In other words, friends,

  335. the kingdom of God advances or goes forward through the witnesses,

  336. not of celebrity preachers and pastors,

  337. but through everyday witness of ordinary Christians like you and I in our places of work,

  338. in our schools, in our universities, in our neighborhoods,

  339. as we seek to follow Jesus and advance His cause.

  340. J.D. Greer, who leads the church in the U.S.,

  341. he asks a challenging question.

  342. He says this,

  343. what if we made our primary consideration when pursuing a career,

  344. where we can most effectively be used in the mission of God?

  345. Lots of factors go into where we choose to pursue our career,

  346. where the money's good,

  347. where our families live,

  348. where we want to live.

  349. These are all valid.

  350. They're not bad things.

  351. But why wouldn't the advance of God's kingdom be the largest factor?

  352. You see what he's saying?

  353. The gospel goes forward,

  354. not just through celebrity leaders and pastors and mega Christians,

  355. it's actually through the faithful witness of ordinary Christians

  356. in their ordinary places in the cities in which God calls them.

  357. But then we see a twist.

  358. We see a surprising twist.

  359. And that's not that not only the kingdom of God comes out through our witness,

  360. not only does the kingdom of God go in the midst of suffering and opposition,

  361. but actually the kingdom of God advances,

  362. God establishes his kingdom,

  363. and the gospel goes forward,

  364. not just despite our suffering,

  365. but because of our suffering.

  366. In other words,

  367. the gospel advances not just in spite of opposition,

  368. but through opposition that the church encounters.

  369. Look at verse 7 with me.

  370. Look at what he says here.

  371. When they,

  372. that's these two witnesses,

  373. when the churches,

  374. God's people,

  375. had finished their testimony,

  376. the beast that rises from the bottomless pit,

  377. okay,

  378. that means satanic forces.

  379. We're going to talk about that in the next few weeks.

  380. The beast will make war on them,

  381. and will conquer them,

  382. and will kill them.

  383. And their dead bodies will lie in the streets of that great city.

  384. For three and a half days,

  385. that's that limited time period again,

  386. some of the peoples and the tribes and the languages and the nations

  387. will gaze at their dead bodies

  388. and refuse to let them be placed in a tomb.

  389. And those who dwell on the earth will rejoice over them.

  390. They will clink glasses and say cheers and raise a toast to one another,

  391. exchange presents,

  392. because these two prophets had been a torment to those who dwell on the earth.

  393. I don't know if you remember,

  394. in Luke's gospel,

  395. Jesus is betrayed by Judas.

  396. He's arrested in the garden of Gethsemane,

  397. and he's put on trial,

  398. this mock trial throughout the night.

  399. And in the morning,

  400. the religious leaders want Jesus to be crucified,

  401. but they don't have the authority to put anyone to death in the Roman Empire.

  402. And so they take Jesus to Pilate,

  403. and they say,

  404. Pilate,

  405. this man is causing an uproar,

  406. we better get rid of him before he causes you any more problems.

  407. And so Pilate questions Jesus,

  408. and Pilate knows that Jesus is innocent.

  409. But he doesn't want to let Jesus go,

  410. because that's going to ruin his political career.

  411. And so Pilate's kind of like,

  412. not sure what to do.

  413. Pilate hears that Herod is in town.

  414. And so he sends Jesus to Herod,

  415. and says,

  416. Herod,

  417. here's this man,

  418. I don't know what to do,

  419. what do you think we should do?

  420. So Herod interviews him,

  421. and Herod comes back and says,

  422. no,

  423. I think we should kill him.

  424. And so Pilate says,

  425. okay,

  426. fine,

  427. sentence him to death,

  428. and Jesus is sent off to be crucified.

  429. And at the end of Luke 23,

  430. there's this amazing line,

  431. and it says,

  432. that day,

  433. Herod and Pilate became friends,

  434. because up until this point,

  435. they were enemies.

  436. See what's happened there?

  437. Here are two people

  438. that previously had nothing in common.

  439. They actually didn't get on at all.

  440. But they find some kind of commonality.

  441. They find that they are unified.

  442. What brings them together

  443. is their mutual dislike

  444. for their opposition,

  445. and for Jesus,

  446. who's causing an uproar.

  447. That's exactly what John is saying

  448. is happening here.

  449. Here in the streets,

  450. those that oppose the gospel

  451. and the cause of Christ,

  452. they persecute Christians,

  453. and they're celebrating,

  454. and they're exchanging presents,

  455. and they're toasting,

  456. and high-fiving one another.

  457. Yeah,

  458. we got rid of those

  459. that have tormented us

  460. and caused us such problems.

  461. And the reason for this,

  462. because the church,

  463. those who hold that life and salvation

  464. are found in nothing

  465. except Jesus and His sacrifice,

  466. not Caesar,

  467. not Rome,

  468. not politics or wealth,

  469. those that hold that Christ alone

  470. is worthy of worship

  471. are considered a threat.

  472. They're viewed as some kind of plague

  473. that must be exterminated

  474. for the well-being of society.

  475. And yet,

  476. this is all part of God's sovereign plan

  477. to bring His kingdom to earth,

  478. to establish His kingdom

  479. and His glory.

  480. And we see this

  481. because throughout the book of Revelation,

  482. the word witness

  483. and the word martyr

  484. are almost used interchangeably.

  485. Wherever there's a witness for Jesus,

  486. they end up being martyred,

  487. and whenever there's a martyr,

  488. it's because they were witnesses for Jesus.

  489. Tim Chester says it like this,

  490. the church is persecuted,

  491. Christians are martyred,

  492. and at times the cause of Christ

  493. seems defeated,

  494. but the church survives

  495. and comes back with renewed strength,

  496. and the cause of Christ

  497. continues in history.

  498. Again and again,

  499. throughout history,

  500. regimes have risen,

  501. and it's looked as if

  502. they would wipe out the church,

  503. but those regimes have gone,

  504. and the church has come

  505. through persecution strong.

  506. It has been victorious

  507. through suffering.

  508. And so the point that John is making

  509. is that the God-given,

  510. God-protected calling

  511. of the people of God

  512. is to bear witness to Jesus,

  513. but that does not mean

  514. we'll be spared from suffering

  515. or death,

  516. but rather that the suffering itself,

  517. just like the Jesus that we follow,

  518. will be the ultimate prophetic sign

  519. to the world

  520. that God's kingdom has come,

  521. that He's establishing His kingdom,

  522. and ultimately,

  523. the nations will glorify Him.

  524. 150 years after

  525. the book of Revelation is written,

  526. this early church father

  527. called Tertullian

  528. famously said this.

  529. He said,

  530. the blood of the martyrs

  531. is the seedbed

  532. for the gospel to go forward.

  533. It's the blood of the martyrs

  534. that's the seedbed

  535. for the gospel to go forward.

  536. In other words,

  537. he's saying it's as Christians

  538. suffer opposition

  539. that the gospel flourishes,

  540. doesn't retreat.

  541. I shared the story

  542. a few weeks ago prematurely,

  543. so I'll share it again properly.

  544. 1555,

  545. okay,

  546. so almost 500 years ago,

  547. in the city of Oxford

  548. in London,

  549. these two bishops

  550. are being arrested

  551. and killed,

  552. Hugh Latimer

  553. and Nicholas Ridley.

  554. And the reason is

  555. because they are telling

  556. the Queen of England,

  557. Queen Mary,

  558. that she needs to repent

  559. and come to faith in Jesus.

  560. And she doesn't like

  561. being told that.

  562. So she has them arrested

  563. and thrown in jail

  564. and eventually she decides

  565. that they're going to be

  566. burnt at the stake.

  567. And so,

  568. one October day

  569. in Oxford,

  570. these two bishops

  571. are taken to Town Square

  572. and they are tied

  573. to the stake

  574. and there is hay

  575. put around their feet.

  576. There's a bag of gunpowder

  577. put around their necks

  578. and hanging there

  579. so that as the flames

  580. come up,

  581. it's going to catch

  582. the gunpowder

  583. and explode in their faces.

  584. And while this is happening,

  585. the younger of these two

  586. called Nicholas Ridley

  587. is a little bit nervous.

  588. You can see

  589. he's a bit fearful.

  590. And so Hugh Latimer,

  591. who's this older,

  592. wiser saint,

  593. he turns to Nicholas Ridley

  594. and he says this,

  595. Be of good cheer,

  596. Master Ridley,

  597. for we shall this day

  598. light such a candle

  599. in England

  600. as I pray by God's grace

  601. will never be put out.

  602. You see what he's saying there?

  603. He's saying,

  604. they think that they've got us

  605. because they're killing us

  606. but they don't know

  607. that we've got them.

  608. They don't know

  609. that actually by killing us

  610. they think they're going

  611. to quieten the gospel.

  612. This is going to propagate

  613. the gospel.

  614. They think they're going

  615. to quieten the church.

  616. This is going to send

  617. the message of the gospel

  618. out even further.

  619. Be of good cheer,

  620. Master Ridley.

  621. This day we shall light

  622. a candle by God's grace

  623. that shall never be put out.

  624. And so this week

  625. I heard the story

  626. on Friday night

  627. of the Korean revival.

  628. I'm sure some of you

  629. will know this.

  630. May you know it better than me.

  631. 1865,

  632. this young Welsh man,

  633. Robert Thomas,

  634. is that right?

  635. He's a missionary to China

  636. but he's got a heart

  637. for Korea.

  638. He goes down to Korea

  639. and he walks amongst

  640. North Korea,

  641. Pongyang,

  642. for two months

  643. learning everything he can.

  644. He then goes back to China

  645. but he's desperate

  646. to go to Korea.

  647. And so he joins

  648. this French naval trading ship

  649. that's going to go to Korea.

  650. But halfway along the trip

  651. the French vessel

  652. decides not to go to Korea

  653. to go to Vietnam.

  654. So he abandons that ship

  655. and joins another

  656. American trading ship

  657. that's on its way to Korea.

  658. But this trading ship

  659. is causing a few problems

  660. as it gets to Korea.

  661. This Robert Thomas

  662. decides to join

  663. as he wants to get to Korea

  664. to be a missionary

  665. but he goes as a translator

  666. on the ship.

  667. And as the ship

  668. comes towards Pongyang

  669. it's sailing up the river

  670. there's a whole lot

  671. of opposition

  672. and they are eventually

  673. attacked.

  674. But Robert Thomas

  675. takes his Bibles

  676. and he throws them

  677. onto the banks

  678. of the river

  679. to try and at least

  680. get these Bibles

  681. out there.

  682. But before he can even

  683. get onto the banks

  684. there's this fight

  685. and this war

  686. and they are all killed

  687. on the ship.

  688. And so Robert Thomas

  689. never goes back to Korea.

  690. He went previously

  691. the year before

  692. for two months

  693. but on this trip

  694. he never even

  695. sets foot

  696. on the banks of Korea.

  697. All he does

  698. is he throws his Bibles

  699. ashore.

  700. But there's a general

  701. that takes these Bibles

  702. because he wants

  703. to put wallpaper

  704. on the house

  705. where he lives.

  706. And so he takes

  707. these Bibles

  708. and he tears the pages out

  709. and he casts them

  710. as wallpaper

  711. on his house.

  712. And the people

  713. start to read

  714. the words

  715. in the Bible

  716. and they start

  717. to realize

  718. that Jesus

  719. is Christ.

  720. And this revival

  721. breaks out

  722. and within 15 years

  723. there are 100 churches

  724. planted in Pongyang.

  725. It's this Christian

  726. center in North Korea.

  727. But Robert Thomas

  728. paid with his life.

  729. Friends,

  730. it's the blood

  731. of the martyrs

  732. that is the seed

  733. bed for the gospel

  734. to go forward.

  735. And that brings us

  736. to the fourth

  737. and the final point

  738. that is God's kingdom

  739. comes with spiritual life.

  740. Because the kingdom

  741. of God

  742. doesn't only come

  743. despite suffering.

  744. It doesn't only come

  745. through suffering.

  746. It comes when God

  747. by his sovereign will

  748. implants spiritual life

  749. into his people

  750. and into a society.

  751. Look at verse 11

  752. with me here.

  753. It says this

  754. in verse 11.

  755. These witnesses,

  756. God's people,

  757. they've been fought against,

  758. they've been killed

  759. because of their testimony,

  760. they've been left for dead

  761. like trash on the street.

  762. Those that have killed them

  763. have celebrated

  764. their great victory

  765. because they killed them

  766. and they've destroyed the church.

  767. But then verse 11

  768. says this,

  769. after three and a half days,

  770. that's that limited time period again,

  771. a breath of life

  772. from God

  773. entered them

  774. and they stood up

  775. on their feet

  776. and great fear

  777. fell on all

  778. those who saw them.

  779. Though they are killed

  780. for their witness,

  781. they do not stay dead

  782. but rather

  783. their death

  784. leads to life.

  785. And the point

  786. that Jesus is making here

  787. is not simply that

  788. you may suffer

  789. but don't worry

  790. it all ends

  791. alright in the end.

  792. The point

  793. that Jesus is making

  794. is though things

  795. may be difficult,

  796. it's okay,

  797. there's a happy ending

  798. at the end of the day.

  799. The point

  800. is that the life

  801. of the Christian

  802. follows the life

  803. of Jesus

  804. which is that

  805. the road to glory,

  806. the road to life

  807. passes through

  808. Mount Calvary.

  809. You see that?

  810. Remember Jesus

  811. went through Calvary

  812. to get to

  813. resurrection life.

  814. Friends,

  815. the pattern

  816. of the Christian

  817. is the pattern

  818. of Jesus

  819. that it's death

  820. that leads to life.

  821. You see a Christian

  822. is not just someone

  823. who believes

  824. that Jesus is God

  825. that's good

  826. you do need to believe that

  827. but even the devil

  828. knows that Jesus

  829. is God

  830. and the devil

  831. is not a Christian

  832. in case you

  833. thought he might be.

  834. No, a Christian

  835. is someone

  836. who follows Jesus

  837. who has come

  838. to trust in him

  839. and obey him

  840. and love him

  841. and follow him

  842. and imitate him

  843. and that means

  844. the pattern

  845. of Jesus' life

  846. is the pattern

  847. of our life as well.

  848. Remember Jesus said

  849. if anyone wants

  850. to follow me

  851. let him pick up

  852. his cross daily.

  853. Friends,

  854. a Christian is someone

  855. who is daily learning

  856. what it means

  857. to follow Jesus

  858. by forfeiting

  859. our own life

  860. for the sake

  861. of his glory

  862. but the irony

  863. is in that place

  864. as we lay down

  865. our lives

  866. actually we find life

  867. and that's the great

  868. promise of the gospel

  869. and we see it here

  870. in Revelation

  871. that ultimately

  872. both spiritually speaking

  873. and from the perspective

  874. of heaven

  875. in God's economy

  876. it's through dying

  877. that actually we find life.

  878. It's through dying

  879. that the church

  880. comes alive.

  881. It's through suffering

  882. persecution

  883. opposition

  884. that the church flourishes.

  885. Again,

  886. Tim Chester says it like this

  887. Jesus is showing his church

  888. that God's people die

  889. and yet live.

  890. In fact,

  891. life comes through death

  892. because we are united

  893. to Christ

  894. our lives are shaped

  895. by his death

  896. and resurrection.

  897. His death

  898. and resurrection

  899. are not just the means

  900. of our salvation

  901. they are also the pattern

  902. of the Christian life.

  903. Whenever you see people

  904. receiving spiritual life

  905. whenever you see a living

  906. healthy

  907. vibrant church

  908. you can be sure

  909. that behind the scenes

  910. someone is dying

  911. dying to self

  912. or suffering

  913. some kind of hardship.

  914. And friends,

  915. that's the great paradox

  916. of the Christian life

  917. that the more you try

  918. and hold on to your life

  919. and preserve your life

  920. the more you try

  921. and maintain your status

  922. and your honor

  923. and your comfort

  924. and your name

  925. the more you end up

  926. losing it.

  927. But paradoxically

  928. the more you're willing

  929. to give up those things

  930. for the sake of Christ

  931. actually you find

  932. that you gain life

  933. and you find

  934. you gain Christ as well.

  935. And that's true

  936. for the individual

  937. and it's true

  938. for the church as well.

  939. Be of good cheer

  940. Master Ridley

  941. we shall this day

  942. light a candle

  943. that I pray

  944. by God's grace

  945. will never

  946. ever be put out.

  947. And you see friends

  948. this is because

  949. this life

  950. this vitality

  951. that's given

  952. to the churches

  953. is not a result

  954. of human ingenuity

  955. or human leadership.

  956. Look at what it says

  957. in verse 11.

  958. After this limited

  959. time period

  960. it says

  961. a breath of life

  962. from God

  963. entered them.

  964. Well I mentioned

  965. this earlier

  966. how chapter 11

  967. is full of these

  968. references to

  969. Ezekiel and Zechariah.

  970. The first century church

  971. as they read

  972. that line

  973. they immediately

  974. would have remembered

  975. a very similar line.

  976. You see in Ezekiel 36

  977. Ezekiel has this vision

  978. and in this vision

  979. he sees this valley

  980. full of dead

  981. dry bones.

  982. This valley that's just

  983. full of these dry bones

  984. there's no life in there.

  985. And in this vision

  986. God comes to him

  987. and says

  988. Ezekiel

  989. can these bones live?

  990. And Ezekiel says

  991. I don't know God

  992. you alone know.

  993. Humanly speaking

  994. no but with you

  995. who knows right?

  996. And so God says

  997. Ezekiel

  998. speak my words

  999. to these dry bones.

  1000. And so Ezekiel does

  1001. he speaks God's word

  1002. and as he does

1003. the bones start to rattle

  1004. flesh and muscle

1005. and sinew start to form

  1006. and these bones

  1007. start to become

  1008. human bodies.

  1009. And then God says

  1010. Ezekiel

  1011. speak again.

1012. And he speaks God's word

  1013. and it says

  1014. the breath of God

  1015. entered these bones

  1016. these bodies

  1017. and they stood up

  1018. on their feet

  1019. like a great army.

  1020. Well that's exactly

  1021. what Revelation said.

1022. As the breath of life

  1023. came into them

  1024. they stood up

  1025. on their feet

  1026. like a great army.

  1027. Except

  1028. in the Hebrew Bible

  1029. the word for breath

  1030. pneuma

  1031. from where we get

  1032. the word

  1033. I've forgotten

1034. where we get that word.

  1035. Pneumatic

  1036. what's that sickness

  1037. when you

  1038. pneumonia

  1039. there we go

  1040. thank you

  1041. doctor

  1042. all the doctors

  1043. in the back left

  1044. corner there

  1045. where we get

  1046. the word pneumonia

  1047. the word for breath

  1048. in Hebrew

  1049. pneuma

  1050. is the same

  1051. as the word

  1052. for God's spirit.

1053. And so as the breath

  1054. of God

  1055. comes into these bones

  1056. God's spirit

  1057. comes into these bones

  1058. and they come alive.

  1059. In other words

  1060. what God is saying

  1061. is that revival

  1062. happens

  1063. by a sovereign

  1064. move

  1065. of his Holy Spirit.

  1066. it's not the work

  1067. of human ingenuity.

  1068. You can't

  1069. you can't grow church

  1070. or establish

  1071. God's kingdom

  1072. on earth

  1073. just by doing

  1074. things well

  1075. and putting on

  1076. a good show.

  1077. It's the spirit

  1078. of God

  1079. that breathes

  1080. into dead

  1081. souls

  1082. and gives them

  1083. life again.

  1084. But that's also

  1085. a reference

  1086. to Zechariah chapter 4

    Zechariah 4 chapter mention

  1087. because in Zechariah

    Zechariah 4 chapter mention

  1088. chapter 4

  1089. Zechariah has a vision

  1090. and in this vision

1091. he sees two olive trees

  1092. that are like

  1093. two lampstands

  1094. and they are

  1095. guarding the temple.

  1096. And Zechariah

  1097. says God

  1098. how are they going

  1099. to do it?

  1100. How are they going

  1101. to guard your temple?

  1102. And God says

  1103. this is how

  1104. they are going

  1105. to do it.

  1106. Not by might

  1107. not by power

  1108. but by my spirit

  1109. says the Lord

  1110. by my breath

  1111. by my pneuma.

  1112. And so friends

  1113. the point that Jesus

  1114. is making

  1115. is that the church

  1116. is victorious.

  1117. The kingdom of God

  1118. will advance.

  1119. The gospel

  1120. will go out.

  1121. It doesn't merely

  1122. survive.

  1123. It doesn't merely

  1124. just make it through.

  1125. The kingdom of God

  1126. will survive

  1127. and will advance

  1128. and will thrive

  1129. because though

  1130. it once was dead

  1131. God breathes

  1132. his spirit

  1133. and life into it

  1134. because the church

  1135. is fundamentally

  1136. a spiritual organism.

  1137. It's not just

  1138. a group of people

  1139. that are trying

  1140. to do life together.

  1141. And that's why

  1142. the church

  1143. is so precious

  1144. because it's

  1145. his temple

  1146. and it's his presence

  1147. that's in here.

  1148. But it's also

  1149. why the church

  1150. will stand.

  1151. Friends

  1152. the future

  1153. of the church

  1154. doesn't depend

  1155. on me.

  1156. That's good news.

  1157. It doesn't depend

  1158. on you.

  1159. It depends

  1160. on Christ

  1161. who is the head

  1162. of his church

  1163. and he will stand.

  1164. Friends

  1165. the church

  1166. will stand

  1167. and will never

  1168. become overcome.

  1169. Individual Christians

  1170. will mess up

  1171. and make mistakes.

  1172. Churches will make mistakes.

  1173. Pastors and preachers

  1174. do dumb things.

  1175. We lose our way

  1176. for sure.

  1177. But the church

  1178. God's witness

  1179. on earth

  1180. will stand

  1181. throughout the ages

  1182. no matter what

  1183. the opposition

  1184. if

  1185. if we maintain

  1186. our witness.

  1187. If we speak

  1188. his word.

  1189. Friends

  1190. the great irony

  1191. of the church

  1192. is that the more

  1193. we try and save

  1194. ourselves from

  1195. persecution

  1196. the more we end

  1197. up dying away.

  1198. And yet the more

  1199. we embrace

  1200. opposition and

  1201. suffering for the

  1202. cause of Christ

  1203. the more the church

  1204. flourishes.

  1205. And so look

  1206. finally as we come

  1207. to a close

  1208. and what is the

  1209. consequence of this?

1210. How does this all end?

1211. Well look at verse 13

  1212. with me.

  1213. It says there are

  1214. these dramatic

  1215. events

  1216. at the end

  1217. of that hour

  1218. a bunch of people

  1219. some people

  1220. reject God

  1221. 7,000 are killed

  1222. in this earthquake.

  1223. It's a small number

  1224. but then it says

  1225. the rest

  1226. were terrified

  1227. that means

  1228. they were humbled

  1229. and they gave glory

1230. to the God of heaven.

  1231. See at the end

  1232. of chapter 9

  1233. there's all these

  1234. dramatic events.

  1235. Remember in chapter 9

  1236. there's earthquakes

  1237. and there's calamity

  1238. and there's disaster

  1239. and there's chaos

  1240. and there's all these

  1241. strange things

  1242. that are happening

  1243. and it says

  1244. but the people

  1245. did not repent.

  1246. They don't turn

  1247. from their idols.

  1248. But yeah

  1249. they do repent.

  1250. So what's the difference

  1251. between chapter 9

  1252. and chapter 11?

  1253. The difference is that

  1254. God's church

  1255. is a faithful witness.

  1256. Friends

  1257. how is revival

1258. going to come to Hong Kong?

  1259. It's not just

  1260. through doom

  1261. and disaster

  1262. and calamity.

  1263. It's through the witness

  1264. of his people

  1265. through his church.

  1266. It's through faithful

  1267. followers of Jesus

  1268. witnessing to the point

  1269. of death

1270. that will bring the nations

  1271. to repentance.

1272. And so what does that mean?

1273. It means three things for us.

  1274. Firstly

  1275. it means this

  1276. that Hong Kong

  1277. needs hundreds

  1278. and hundreds

  1279. of more churches

  1280. faithfully proclaiming

  1281. the gospel

1282. of the kingdom of God.

  1283. Friends

  1284. it means we need

  1285. more leaders.

  1286. We need more elders

  1287. and pastors.

1288. We need more worship leaders.

1289. We need more CG leaders.

  1290. We need more university

  1291. ministry leaders.

1292. We need kids ministry leaders.

1293. We need men and women

  1294. that will take someone

  1295. under their wing

  1296. and read the Bible

  1297. with them

  1298. and disciple them.

  1299. Friends

  1300. our city is desperate

  1301. for hope

1302. and the hope of the city

  1303. is in the witnesses

  1304. of God

  1305. God's church standing

  1306. and proclaiming

  1307. that Christ is Lord.

  1308. Secondly

  1309. it means this

  1310. it means that

  1311. if you're not a Christian

  1312. Jesus is calling you

  1313. to follow him today.

  1314. Friends

1315. if you're here this morning

  1316. and you're not yet

  1317. a follower of Jesus

  1318. today is the day

  1319. that he's calling you

1320. to come and follow him.

  1321. Friends

1322. Jesus is not inviting you

  1323. to himself

1324. so that he can simply

  1325. improve your life

  1326. or make your life

  1327. more comfortable

  1328. and convenient.

  1329. Jesus says that

  1330. if you follow him

  1331. it will be inconvenient.

1332. He may even ask you

1333. to die for your faith.

1334. Jesus may even send you

  1335. as a missionary

  1336. to some foreign land

1337. where it will cost you

  1338. your life.

  1339. Friends

  1340. following Jesus

  1341. will cost you daily

  1342. and dearly.

1343. Jesus is not asking you

1344. to add a little bit

1345. of Jesus to your life

1346. to your already busy life.

  1347. Jesus is calling you

1348. to lay down your life

  1349. to follow him

  1350. to the cross

  1351. to make him

  1352. your first priority

  1353. in your life.

  1354. Jesus is calling you

  1355. today to pick up

  1356. your cross

  1357. and to follow him.

  1358. Friends

1359. if you don't know him

  1360. today is the day

  1361. to change that.

  1362. Come to Jesus.

  1363. And then thirdly

  1364. it means this

1365. it means if you are

  1366. a follower of Jesus

  1367. he's calling you

1368. to be a faithful witness

  1369. in the city

  1370. at this time.

  1371. Friends chances are

  1372. that will mean

  1373. opposition and persecution.

  1374. Chances are

  1375. you'll be misunderstood.

  1376. Chances are

  1377. you'll be accused

  1378. of being bigoted

  1379. and hypocritical.

  1380. Chances are

  1381. it will cost you

  1382. dearly

  1383. if not financially

  1384. then probably

  1385. your reputation

  1386. certainly your pride

  1387. and your ego.

  1388. But he's also

  1389. promising you this

  1390. that in that place

  1391. while it feels

  1392. like you're dying

  1393. a thousand deaths

  1394. that death

  1395. will lead

  1396. to life.

  1397. He promises you

  1398. that though you die

  1399. you will be raised

1400. he will give you life

  1401. both in this lifetime

  1402. and in the life

  1403. to come.

  1404. Friends Jesus

1405. calling us to follow him

  1406. with everything we have.

  1407. Will we do it?

  1408. Let's come to him

  1409. in prayer now.

  1410. Let's do that together.

  1411. Lord Jesus

  1412. we come before you

1413. and we thank you God

1414. that you are such a

  1415. magnificent

  1416. and faithful God.

  1417. Christ

1418. in our day and age

  1419. we don't like

  1420. the idea

  1421. or

1422. let me put it this way

  1423. Father

1424. in our day and age

  1425. we feel entitled

  1426. to a comfortable

  1427. and a convenient life.

  1428. And God

  1429. when things don't

  1430. go our way

  1431. we

  1432. so easily

  1433. feel sorry

  1434. for ourselves

  1435. we feel victims

  1436. of some

  1437. agenda

  1438. against us.

  1439. God

  1440. you cut against

  1441. the grain

  1442. and you promise us

  1443. that in this life

  1444. we will have trouble

  1445. that following Jesus

  1446. following you God

  1447. means that we are

  1448. inviting difficulty

  1449. into our lives.

  1450. But God

  1451. you promise that

  1452. that death

  1453. will lead to life.

  1454. Father

1455. pray for those of us

  1456. God

  1457. that maybe feel

  1458. spiritually stagnant

  1459. we feel

  1460. spiritually dry.

  1461. Father

  1462. won't you

  1463. in your grace

  1464. and your mercy

  1465. won't you bring us

1466. to the end of ourselves

  1467. that we may find

  1468. true life again.

  1469. God

  1470. God

  1471. I pray

  1472. Father

  1473. where we've

  1474. tried to hold

  1475. on to our lives

  1476. and

  1477. I pray

  1478. God

  1479. that you will

  1480. intervene

  1481. and intercede

  1482. that God

  1483. you will

  1484. cause us

  1485. to die

  1486. to ourselves

  1487. that we may

  1488. find true

  1489. life in you

  1490. Lord.

  1491. And God

  1492. I pray

  1493. for Watermark

  1494. and I pray

  1495. for every church

  1496. in Hong Kong

  1497. I pray

  1498. for the English

  1499. churches

  1500. and the Chinese

  1501. churches

  1502. I pray

  1503. God

  1504. that we

  1505. will be

  1506. faithful

  1507. witnesses

  1508. to our city

  1509. I pray

  1510. God

  1511. that the

  1512. kingdom

  1513. of God

  1514. will come

  1515. to Hong Kong

  1516. I pray

  1517. that the

  1518. gospel

  1519. will advance

  1520. God

  1521. I pray

  1522. Lord

  1523. that

  1524. your

  1525. kingdom

  1526. will come

  1527. God

  1528. because

  1529. your

  1530. church

  1531. does not

  1532. shrink

  1533. back

  1534. in the

  1535. face

  1536. of

  1537. opposition

  1538. but

  1539. that

  1540. will

  1541. stand

  1542. Lord

  1543. make

  1544. us

  1545. a

  1546. faithful

  1547. witness

  1548. we

  1549. pray

  1550. we

  1551. pray

  1552. these

  1553. things

  1554. in your

  1555. wonderful

  1556. and your

  1557. powerful

  1558. name

  1559. Amen
