  1. Father, we ask that you would gently but very deeply and powerfully pour the Holy Spirit upon us at this time.

  2. Pour the Holy Spirit down upon us and deep within us,

  3. that your word, your gospel, your grace might come ever deeper into the center of who we are.

  4. Father, we ask that you would reveal Jesus to us as Savior and Lord at an ever deeper level of who we are.

  5. And this we ask in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  6. Please be seated.

  7. I was raised in a Christian home, but I was not one of those Christian kids who naturally liked church.

  8. In fact, probably if you were able to go back in time and bring some of my long-suffering Sunday school teachers

  9. and to find out that I'd become a minister, I think they would have been, the Irish word would be gobsmacked.

  10. Probably if those Sunday school teachers were getting together and discussing those most likely to live to be a pastor or a missionary or something,

  11. I would not have been on that list.

  12. And as I got a bit older, I had a hard time with Christianity.

  13. And part of the problem I had with the Christian faith was that I just didn't like a lot of the cultural stuff that went along with it.

  14. Now, I'm getting to be close to ancient of days, and it's hard for people younger to understand the world.

  15. But in the Baptist type of church that I grew up in, I thought that if I was to become a Christian,

  16. I had to dress a certain way, had to have my hair cut a certain way.

  17. I had to listen to a certain type of music.

  18. I couldn't listen to a whole pile of other things and watch TV.

  19. I never had any interest in dancing, by the way, but that's something I'll have to learn in heaven.

  20. Because we'll probably do a lot of dancing in heaven.

  21. But, you know, that wasn't something that I'm particularly drawn to.

  22. But I just, music, everything, the type of literature,

  23. there seemed like there was this Baptist Christian culture,

  24. and real Christians had to like all of that stuff, and I didn't like any of it.

  25. I like different types of music, different ways of dress,

  26. and so I had a hard time at all thinking that Christianity could be for me.

  27. I'm not going to go through the whole thing, but some things transpired that ended up making me realize

  28. that I could be a Christian and dress different and do a whole pile of different things,

  29. and the Lord appeared to me and I became a Christian.

  30. I mention this because it's a very similar problem that I have sometimes

  31. when I talk with some of my Muslim or Jewish friends in particular,

  32. but just generally when I talk to people, also for people that are raised in the Catholic school system.

  33. They try to figure out what type of Christian I am,

  34. and I have a hard time finding categories to talk to them.

  35. Because, you see, all the Muslims that I know are people who basically have rejected

  36. most of the Muslim faith and live a very secular life.

  37. And for them, like a devout Muslim, well, like if you're a male and you're a devout Muslim,

  38. you start to grow a beard, and you start to wear certain types of clothes,

  39. and you start to do a whole pile of very particular Muslim things.

  40. That's what a devout, serious Muslim does,

  41. and these secular Muslims don't want anything to do with it.

  42. And when I talk to my Jewish friends and I try to describe where I am,

  43. well, from their point of view, if you're a very serious Jewish person,

  44. well, once again, the men and the women will start to dress a very particular way,

  45. and they've rejected that.

  46. They don't want to have any of that.

  47. And it would be the same, actually, for Hindus and Buddhists.

  48. And for those who've grown up in the Catholic school system,

  49. like real Christians are priests.

  50. Like if you're really serious, you become a priest,

  51. or you become a monk, or you become a nun, or something like that,

  52. and they're not interested in that.

  53. So I have a hard time trying to describe what the gospel is,

  54. what Christianity is, and who I am and where I all fit,

  55. given the fact that there's all these preconceptions,

  56. religious preconceptions, about what it means to be a real Christian,

  57. a serious Christian.

  58. The Bible text that we're going to look at today

  59. actually is spectacularly helpful in helping us to think through this issue,

  60. not in terms of how we maybe communicate to our friends,

  61. but at least for us, to help us to understand.

  62. And if you're here just curious, it's a very, very, very helpful text

  63. to understand how the gospel is different

  64. and what the gospel does in terms of how it shapes you and how it doesn't.

  65. So if you turn in your Bibles to John chapter 21,

    John 21 chapter mention

  66. that would be very, very helpful.

  67. John chapter 21.

    John 21 chapter mention

  68. And just, you know, it's so funny.

  69. In so many churches and so many Christians, when you meet them,

  70. they talk about parts of the Bible as if it's just like a quote.

  71. But it's not.

  72. You know, my wife and I just finished watching a documentary.

  73. It was a very good documentary.

  74. We really enjoyed it, The Dawn Wall.

  75. And it tells a story.

  76. It tells the story of this fellow Tommy Caldwell

  77. and what he was like growing up

  78. and what led him to have this obsession to climb a particular rock face.

  79. And there's a story.

  80. It goes back and forth about what's happening in his life,

  81. what drives him, and how it all ends.

  82. And if I just came in and just gave you a quote from a bit of it,

  83. it wouldn't make any sense, right?

  84. Because you have to sort of know the whole story.

  85. It's the same here with John's gospel.

  86. He's writing a story.

  87. He tells you the story of Jesus,

  88. the biography of Jesus in the story form.

  89. And when you do that,

  90. you realize all sorts of different things about it.

  91. So what's just happened, as I just said,

  92. John is an eyewitness.

  93. He's written this eyewitness biography

  94. while other eyewitnesses were around.

  95. And he's talked to us about how Jesus died.

  96. And he talked about how Jesus was embalmed

  97. and how he was entombed

  98. and how the tomb was empty

  99. and the grave clothes were left behind

  100. and how he appeared to Mary

  101. and then how he appeared to 10 of the disciples

  102. and then how he appeared to the disciples plus Thomas

  103. and maybe some others.

  104. And that's what we just looked at.

  105. That's what's just before this.

  106. And there's a very important bit that's just before this

  107. that I just have to summarize for you

  108. or you don't understand the shocking nature of this.

  109. Because I can tell you this,

  110. there have been lots of trees

  111. that have been put to death

  112. because of this chapter,

  113. these verses that we're looking at.

  114. Because for many, many scholars and many Christians,

  115. this is a problem text.

  116. And you don't understand it

  117. unless you know what's just going on before that.

  118. And what's just going on before this

  119. is that when Jesus shows himself alive to the disciples,

  120. then he gives these four things.

  121. He gives them a message which they're to proclaim.

  122. And the message which they are to proclaim

  123. is that there is a way.

  124. Jesus has now done something

  125. so that human beings will no longer be at enmity,

  126. that's fighting,

  127. or opposed to God.

  128. But Jesus has done something to make peace with God.

  129. Not that God had to make peace with us.

  130. He's always been loving.

  131. But that we might be at peace with him.

  132. And Jesus has now done that.

  133. By his life and death and resurrection,

  134. Jesus has done what human beings can't do.

  135. He has opened a door for us to be at peace with God.

  136. That he will be our God.

  137. That we could walk with him.

  138. That he would be our father.

  139. That we are in our father's world.

  140. And we can talk to him.

  141. And he gives us this message that we have to proclaim.

  142. And then the second thing he does

  143. is he says,

  144. you've got to actually go.

  145. Not only do I give you a message,

  146. you've got to go and tell people about it.

  147. You don't just sort of wait until people come to you.

  148. You need to figure out ways to go and tell them.

  149. And then the third thing he does,

  150. he says,

  151. so you have the message,

  152. you have the mission.

  153. I'm going to give you the power.

  154. I'm going to give you the Holy Spirit.

  155. He breathes the Holy Spirit on them.

  156. So they have the power

  157. to do,

  158. to proclaim the message and to go.

  159. And then the fourth thing he does

  160. is he says,

  161. this is really important.

  162. Like people's eternal destiny

  163. hangs upon this.

  164. If people die without hearing this

  165. or they hear it and they reject it,

  166. it means that they will be forever

  167. at enmity with God.

  168. If they receive it,

  169. it means they begin to have peace with God

  170. that begins right now

  171. and will go on for all eternity.

  172. This is very, very, very important.

  173. You've got to do it.

  174. And then John,

  175. and then Jesus says,

  176. people who believe in me

  177. without having actually seen me,

  178. you're blessed.

  179. He says over all of us who are Christians,

  180. you're blessed.

  181. And then John says,

  182. by the way,

  183. I wrote this whole book

  184. so you'll understand who Jesus is

  185. and you'll believe him and trust him.

  186. And now that can leave us with a bit of,

  187. if the gospel just ended right there,

  188. we'd say,

  189. well, how do we live?

  190. Like, what do we do?

  191. And so John now sort of gives us

  192. a little bit of an implication

  193. of all this big message

  194. and that's what happens right now.

  195. This is where the story continues.

  196. It's John chapter 21, verse 1,

    John 21:1

  197. and here's how it continues.

  198. It's very surprising.

  199. It's so surprising that,

  200. as I said,

  201. lots of trees have been cut down

  202. to make paper

  203. for scholars and pastors

  204. to write about it

  205. because they see it as a great problem.

  206. Right?

  207. Very important.

  208. Go off and do it.

  209. Chapter 21, verse 1.

  210. After this,

  211. Jesus revealed himself again

  212. to the disciples

  213. by the Sea of Tiberias

  214. and he revealed himself in this way.

  215. Just sort of pause.

  216. In the New Testament,

  217. you can get a little bit confused.

  218. There's three different ways

  219. of referring to the same body of water.

  220. This, by the way,

  221. is very common.

  222. If you've grown up in a rural area,

  223. that might be the way

  224. the rural people refer to something,

  225. it might be something

  226. that the government refers to it,

  227. there might be something

  228. that tourists call it,

  229. and just reflect it

  230. in how the Gospels are written.

  231. So the Sea of Galilee,

  232. the Sea of Tiberias,

  233. and Lake Gennesaret

  234. are all the same body of water.

  235. Okay?

  236. So just to read it again,

  237. the Sea of Galilee

  238. is more familiar to us.

  239. So after this,

  240. verse 1,

  241. Jesus revealed himself again

  242. to the disciples

  243. by the Sea of Galilee

  244. or Gennesaret

  245. or Tiberias,

  246. and he revealed himself

  247. in this way.

  248. Simon Peter,

  249. Thomas,

  250. called the twin,

  251. Nathaniel of Cana and Galilee,

  252. the sons of Zebedee,

  253. and two others

  254. of Jesus' disciples

  255. were together,

  256. seven guys.

  257. Simon Peter said to them,

  258. I am going fishing.

  259. They said to him,

  260. we will go with you.

  261. They went out

  262. and got into the boat,

  263. but that night

  264. they caught nothing.

  265. Now believe it or not,

  266. this has caused

  267. lots of angst.

  268. And the reason is,

  269. well,

  270. first of all,

  271. there's many,

  272. many scholars

  273. who believe

  274. that this is actually

  275. out of place,

  276. that this should have

  277. actually been,

  278. whoever was copying

  279. the book,

  280. they mixed things up

  281. and it should really

  282. be earlier in the story

  283. and it somehow

  284. is a mistake.

  285. And the reason

  286. they think that

  287. is they say to themselves,

  288. good grief,

  289. Jesus has just

  290. appeared to them,

  291. he's done it

  292. several times,

  293. he's told them

  294. that they have to go,

  295. they have to proclaim

  296. this message,

  297. and these guys

  298. are fishing?

  299. Like,

  300. are they stupid?

  301. Well,

  302. they can't be that stupid.

  303. They can't be that dumb.

  304. I know you're not

  305. supposed to say stupid,

  306. right?

  307. Sorry,

  308. parents,

  309. if you have young kids,

  310. you're not supposed

  311. to say stupid.

  312. Just time out.

  313. I shouldn't have done it.

  314. Anyway,

  315. dumb,

  316. clueless,

  317. whatever you want to say,

  318. they're fishing.

  319. It doesn't make any sense.

  320. And so they try to figure out

  321. how to get around

  322. this particular problem.

  323. Said some scholars say

  324. that it's just a mistake

  325. in the copying.

  326. And by the way,

  327. there's zero evidence

  328. that it's in the wrong order.

  329. All of the ancient manuscripts

  330. show the gospel written

  331. in this particular,

  332. zero evidence

  333. that it's in the wrong order.

  334. And pastors will talk about

  335. why it is

  336. that they're not in Jerusalem,

  337. why it is

  338. that they're not praying,

  339. they're not singing praise songs,

  340. they're not studying the Bible,

  341. they're not making a plan

  342. to evangelize the world,

  343. they're not doing

  344. any of these things,

  345. they're fishing.

  346. And it's a problem.

  347. And there's another thing

  348. which is going on.

  349. And by the way,

  350. part of the reason

  351. that this is a problem,

  352. that people view it

  353. as a problem,

  354. is,

  355. well, you see,

  356. it's a little bit like

  357. what I said

  358. at the beginning

  359. of the sermon.

  360. You see,

  361. because real Christians

  362. go to a Baptist church,

  363. those of you

  364. who didn't go to a Baptist church

  365. back then,

  366. sucks to be you.

  367. But real Christians

  368. went to a Baptist church,

  369. real Christians

  370. didn't listen to choirs,

  371. soloists,

  372. and gospel quartets

  373. were particularly

  374. what real Christians

  375. listened to.

  376. And real Christians

  377. dressed a certain way,

  378. and real Christians

  379. had their hair cut

  380. a certain way,

  381. and real Christians

  382. did lots of religious stuff

  383. all of the time,

  384. nothing secular.

  385. And so,

  386. a lot of pastors

  387. and scholars

  388. take this over to the text.

  389. Jesus has just given them

  390. this great commission,

  391. and here they're fishing.

  392. Like,

  393. that's not what

  394. real Christians do.

  395. Now,

  396. we're going to look

  397. at this text.

  398. There's more.

  399. You have to read

  400. the rest of the story.

  401. But there's another thing

  402. actually here,

  403. which is really important,

  404. and I'm going to just

  405. take a moment

  406. to talk about it.

  407. There's a little bit

  408. of a class bias

  409. in these comments as well.

  410. As you know,

  411. throughout all of

  412. Christian history,

  413. there's always a bit

  414. of a problem

  415. of thinking that

  416. upper middle class

  417. are a bit more holy

  418. than working class.

  419. We're more polished.

  420. I'm not upper middle class.

  421. But middle class,

  422. you know,

  423. more than the working class,

  424. you know,

  425. we have better people skills.

  426. You know,

  427. we know how to eat better.

  428. We have better taste

  429. in music

  430. and literature

  431. and all of that

  432. type of stuff.

  433. And there's just

  434. this subtle way

  435. that we think

  436. that these things

  437. that make no difference

  438. to God whatsoever

  439. somehow are connected

  440. to being spiritual,

  441. being more godly.

  442. But here's the thing.

  443. A couple of years ago,

  444. quite a few years ago now,

  445. I listened to a podcast

  446. and the podcast

  447. was by an executive

  448. from Walmart.

  449. And the executive

  450. in Walmart

  451. was talking to a group

  452. of other executives

  453. and high-level

  454. advertising people.

  455. And one of the things

  456. he said

  457. is that Walmart

  458. is not for any of you

  459. in this room.

  460. We at Walmart,

  461. we don't care about

  462. a single one

  463. in this room.

  464. Not one.

  465. We don't care

  466. if a single one of you

  467. ever come to our store.

  468. Why?

  469. Walmart is designed

  470. to attract people

  471. who live paycheck

  472. to paycheck.

  473. Everything in Walmart

  474. is designed

  475. to meet the needs

  476. of people

  477. who live paycheck

  478. to paycheck.

  479. You in the room,

  480. you don't live

  481. paycheck to paycheck.

  482. We don't care about you.

  483. But you know what?

  484. Most of North America

  485. lives paycheck to paycheck

  486. and we'll make enough money

  487. reaching most of them.

  488. The early disciples

  489. lived paycheck

  490. to paycheck.

  491. They were not

  492. upper class.

  493. They were not

  494. independently wealthy.

  495. Peter went fishing

  496. because he needed money.

  497. And he needed money

  498. not because he was sinful

  499. but because he lived

  500. paycheck to paycheck.

  501. In fact,

  502. out of all the original

  503. 12 disciples,

  504. the only one

  505. who might not have had

  506. to live paycheck to paycheck

  507. was Matthew.

  508. But after Matthew

  509. gave up his occupation,

  510. he also now

  511. would have to have been

  512. living paycheck to paycheck.

  513. And the reason

  514. Peter goes fishing

  515. and he goes fishing

  516. at night

  517. is because

  518. if you want to make money

  519. from fishing,

  520. you fish at night

  521. so that as the day begins,

  522. people can go

  523. and buy your fresh fish.

  524. That's why you do it.

  525. He was making some money.

  526. If he was alive today,

  527. he'd not be shopping

  528. at Nordstrom's.

  529. He'd be shopping

  530. at Walmart.

  531. He wouldn't be eating

  532. at the Fauna restaurant

  533. on Bank Street.

  534. He'd be eating

  535. at McDonald's

  536. or Subway.

  537. That's his social class.

  538. And to think

  539. that he's doing

  540. something sinful

  541. by working

  542. is partially

  543. a reflection,

  544. an unconscious

  545. social class bias

  546. that often slips

  547. into churches.

  548. Let me tell you,

  549. God doesn't love

  550. people who live

  551. in a mansion

  552. in Manitic

  553. any more

  554. than he loves

  555. somebody who's living

  556. in subsidized housing.

  557. He doesn't.

  558. It's a problem.

  559. If you're in the military,

  560. he doesn't love generals

  561. more than he loves privates.

  562. He loves people.

  563. So,

  564. here we have

  565. the situation.

  566. Like,

  567. what's going on?

  568. How's Jesus

  569. going to respond

  570. to the fact

  571. that these guys

  572. have been going,

  573. they're going fishing?

  574. Well,

  575. let's see.

  576. Verse 4,

  577. the story continues.

  578. So,

  579. just as day was breaking,

  580. Jesus stood on the shore,

  581. yet the disciples

  582. did not know

  583. that it was Jesus.

  584. Jesus said to them,

  585. children,

  586. do you have any fish?

  587. Just sort of pause here.

  588. The translation

  589. there is very literal.

  590. But it's actually

  591. not very helpful.

  592. In the sense that

  593. it's a little bit like

  594. if I,

  595. if you see a guy

  596. and he sees some other guys

  597. out in a boat,

  598. he might say,

  599. boys,

  600. how's it going?

  601. Or lads,

  602. how's it going?

  603. Right?

  604. It's just a term

  605. of affection.

  606. It'd be like saying,

  607. hey boys,

  608. how's the work going today?

  609. And they'd say something good.

  610. And that's what he's really saying.

  611. He's saying,

  612. boys,

  613. how's it going?

  614. So,

  615. read verse 5 again.

  616. So,

  617. Jesus said to them,

  618. boys,

  619. or lads,

  620. do you have any fish?

  621. And they answered him,

  622. no.

  623. He said to them,

  624. cast the net on the right side,

  625. the other side of the boat,

  626. and you will find some.

  627. Now,

  628. just pause here for a second.

  629. And this is something

  630. that most of you don't know.

  631. You would not believe

  632. how many people

  633. use this text

  634. as a proof text

  635. to say,

  636. the reason your church

  637. isn't growing,

  638. the reason you're not

  639. making more money,

  640. the reason you're not

  641. having better success

  642. in evangelism,

  643. the reason you don't have

  644. all these other things

  645. is you're fishing

  646. on the wrong side

  647. of the boat.

  648. So,

  649. go to my 1-800 number,

  650. my webpage,

  651. sign up,

  652. give me your credit card information,

  653. I'll give you the techniques

  654. so you can fish

  655. on the right side

  656. of the boat.

  657. Okay,

  658. next time you read that,

  659. time out.

  660. This is not a proof text

  661. to sell your stuff.

  662. The Bible

  663. is never

  664. a proof text

  665. for you

  666. to make lots of money

  667. with your brilliant idea.

  668. It's not.

  669. Never.

  670. Ever.

  671. It's one of the ways

  672. that people who say

  673. they believe the Bible

  674. act as if they

  675. don't believe the Bible.

  676. It's actually a violation

  677. of the commandment

  678. about taking the Lord's name

  679. in vain,

  680. actually.

  681. So,

  682. I hope there's no guest here

  683. who has a 1-800 number

  684. who's used this.

  685. Well,

  686. you know what?

  687. I'm glad you heard this,

  688. what I said,

  689. because I know

  690. I'm right on this.

  691. And a moment's reflection

  692. will tell you,

  693. the Bible wasn't written

  694. so you can make money

  695. off your idea.

  696. It wasn't written

  697. for that at all,

  698. ever.

  699. Anyway,

  700. back to the story.

  701. Got you mixed up.

  702. We'll go back

  703. to verse 6.

  704. He said to them,

  705. Jesus said to them,

  706. cast the net

  707. on the other side

  708. of the boat

  709. and you will find

  710. some fish.

  711. So they cast it

  712. and now they were

  713. not able to haul it in

  714. because of the quantity

  715. of fish.

  716. The disciple

  717. whom Jesus loved

  718. therefore said to Peter,

  719. it is the Lord.

  720. And when Simon Peter

  721. heard that it was the Lord,

  722. he put on his

  723. outer garment

  724. for he was stripped

  725. for work

  726. and threw himself

  727. into the sea.

  728. And the other disciples

  729. came in the boat

  730. dragging the net

  731. full of fish

  732. for they were not

  733. far from the land

  734. but about a hundred yards off.

  735. Now just a couple

  736. of things here.

  737. Believe it,

  738. as you can well imagine,

  739. this has caused

  740. lots of problems as well

  741. and some of you

  742. are probably wondering

  743. why is it that

  744. they are not able

  745. to recognize Jesus.

  746. Like isn't this

  747. a contradiction?

  748. If you just read

  749. the gospel,

  750. Jesus has appeared

  751. to Mary,

  752. he's appeared

  753. to the ten of the disciples,

  754. he's appeared

  755. to eleven disciples

  756. and maybe some others

  757. and if you know

  758. the other things

  759. in the gospels,

  760. he's appeared

  761. to others

  762. and here they

  763. don't recognize him.

  764. It would be

  765. a little bit like this.

  766. I know if you're

  767. a guest here,

  768. you don't know

  769. who Andrew and Lisa are

  770. but for those of us

  771. who know Andrew

  772. and Lisa

  773. and what they look like,

  774. okay,

  775. and if you've ever

  776. helped at coffee,

  777. you know there's

  778. a little tiny kitchen

  779. just about over there,

  780. a little tiny,

  781. tiny kitchen,

  782. not much bigger

  783. than a closet

  784. and if two of you

  785. went into that kitchen

  786. and one of you

  787. came out and said to me,

  788. oh, I saw Andrew

  789. in the kitchen

  790. all by himself

  791. and the other one said,

  792. no, no,

  793. I saw Lisa in the kitchen

  794. all by herself,

  795. you would wonder

  796. what's going on.

  797. Nobody would confuse

  798. Andrew with Lisa.

  799. It's never going to happen

  800. in a million,

  801. well, maybe,

  802. I don't know,

  803. maybe in a million years,

  804. I don't know,

  805. but they won't live,

  806. nobody will confuse them.

  807. You know,

  808. one is this tall,

  809. one is this tall,

  810. male and female,

  811. different color,

  812. different boy,

  813. like nobody

  814. will confuse them,

  815. right?

  816. So if one of,

  817. if two of you

  818. went in and said,

  819. no, I saw Andrew

  820. in this little tiny room

  821. and the other one said,

  822. no, no, it was Lisa,

  823. you'd go,

  824. there's something wrong,

  825. like somebody's making up

  826. and so we take

  827. this assumption

  828. because why,

  829. we understand

  830. what people look like

  831. and how perception

  832. worked with human beings

  833. but here's the problem

  834. we have.

  835. How much do any of us

  836. know about resurrected bodies?

  837. How many of us

  838. have a direct

  839. day-by-day experience

  840. with resurrected bodies?

  841. If you put up your hand,

  842. I don't believe you.

  843. The answer is

  844. we have zero knowledge

  845. of resurrected bodies.

  846. The only knowledge

  847. we have of resurrected bodies

  848. is what we find

  849. by reading

  850. the eyewitness accounts

  851. and all of the eyewitness accounts

  852. seem to say

  853. that you can't just observe

  854. Jesus after his resurrection

  855. the same way

  856. you can observe

  857. Andrew or Lisa

  858. or me.

  859. It seems as if

  860. for we,

  861. see,

  862. I have fallen,

  863. I'm a fallen human being

  864. and I'm mortal

  865. and I know

  866. that I can observe

  867. other people

  868. and I can just look

  869. and I can see them

  870. but it seems as if

  871. from the records

  872. that Jesus really did

  873. rise from the dead

  874. he really is physical

  875. as we're going to see

  876. in a moment

  877. he eats fish

  878. and all of that

  879. type of stuff

  880. he really is alive

  881. he really has

  882. defeated death

  883. but you cannot

  884. observe Jesus

  885. and recognize him

  886. unless he wills it.

  887. and that's what

  888. seems to be

  889. most of the New Testament

  890. accounts all seem

  891. to say that

  892. and I don't understand

  893. why scholars have

  894. such a problem with it

  895. it only makes

  896. we can only really

  897. have a problem

  898. if you think

  899. you know a lot

  900. about resurrected bodies

  901. and we don't

  902. Jesus has to will it

  903. and that's what happens

  904. in fact

  905. if you think

  906. if you look at it

  907. this isn't just

  908. George saying this

  909. look up

  910. if you put

  911. go back to verse 1

  912. of chapter 21

  913. look at this

  914. the Bible

  915. you see the Bible

  916. often if you read

  917. the Bible carefully

  918. it often helps you

  919. to understand

  920. what's going on

  921. after this

  922. Jesus revealed

  923. himself again

  924. to the disciples

  925. by the sea of Tiberias

  926. and he revealed

  927. himself in this way

  928. he uses the word

  929. revealed twice

  930. if you want to

  931. just skip down

  932. now to verse 14

  933. I don't know

  934. if it will be

  935. on the screen or not

  936. verse 14 says

  937. this was now

  938. the third time

  939. that Jesus was revealed

  940. to the disciples

  941. after he was raised

  942. from the dead

  943. and the word

  944. the original language

  945. word revealed

  946. can sometimes

  947. just mean appear

  948. but the fundamental

  949. meaning is

  950. makes understood

  951. and visible

  952. what cannot be

  953. understood

  954. or seen

  955. that God

  956. reveals himself

  957. we can't see God

  958. by ourself

  959. he has to reveal himself

  960. we can't know

  961. what God is thinking

  962. he has to reveal it

  963. it would just be

  964. the same thing

  965. as any human being

  966. you don't know

  967. what they're thinking

  968. if I ask all of you

  969. right now

  970. to just tell me

  971. what I'm thinking

  972. what I'm thinking

  973. in my head

  974. right now

  975. probably none of you

  976. would be able

  977. to tell me

  978. but I was picturing

  979. the little Baptist church

  980. I grew up in

  981. I had to reveal that

  982. to you

  983. and that's the word here

  984. three times

  985. at the beginning

  986. and the end of the story

  987. Jesus reveals himself

  988. he makes visible

  989. or clear

  990. understood

  991. what they could not know

  992. by their own power

  993. but we still have to get around

  994. this whole thing

  995. about

  996. are the disciples

  997. just dumb

  998. are they rebellious

  999. are they acting

  1000. in a way

  1001. that is in complete

  1002. defiance of Jesus

1003. does Jesus do this miracle

  1004. so he could say

  1005. okay goofballs

1006. I gave you the instructions

  1007. you weren't doing them

  1008. and that's why

  1009. you got zero fish

1010. and I have to come up

  1011. a second time

1012. and give you 153 big fish

  1013. to understand

1014. you gotta listen to me

1015. and do what I say

  1016. so get your butts

  1017. somewhere else

  1018. get doing

  1019. what I told you

  1020. is that what

1021. no let's see what happens

  1022. verse 9

  1023. right

  1024. they get to shore

  1025. with all the fish

  1026. verse 9

  1027. when they got out

  1028. on the land

1029. they saw a charcoal fire

  1030. in place

  1031. with fish

  1032. laid on it

  1033. and bread

1034. so the fish is cooking

1035. and there's some fresh bread

  1036. Jesus said to them

1037. bring some of the fish

  1038. that you've just caught

  1039. so Simon Peter

  1040. went aboard

1041. and hauled the net ashore

  1042. full of large fish

  1043. 153 of them

  1044. and although

  1045. there were so many

1046. the net was not torn

  1047. Jesus said to them

  1048. come and have breakfast

1049. now none of the disciples

  1050. dared ask him

  1051. who are you

1052. they knew it was the Lord

  1053. Jesus came

  1054. and took the bread

1055. and gave it to them

1056. and so with the fish

  1057. this was now

  1058. the third time

  1059. that Jesus was revealed

  1060. to the disciples

  1061. after he was raised

  1062. from the dead

1063. I'm going to unpack it

  1064. with some points

  1065. to help you

1066. but here's the main thing

1067. if you look at this text

1068. there's no word of condemnation

1069. is there not one word

  1070. of condemnation

  1071. Jesus didn't say

  1072. you got it wrong

  1073. in fact what John

  1074. has done very helpfully

  1075. is after

  1076. this very important message

  1077. which went on earlier

1078. which is that you're blessed

1079. if you believe in Jesus

  1080. you have an obligation

  1081. to go and

  1082. let people know

  1083. that Jesus

  1084. has provided the means

1085. by which you as a human being

1086. can now be at peace with God

  1087. no longer at enmity

1088. he can be your God

1089. he can be your heavenly father

1090. you can start to understand

  1091. his love for you

1092. and you can walk with him

  1093. and with Jesus

  1094. you can learn about

1095. the existence of the Holy Spirit

1096. and the Holy Spirit's power

1097. and be open to it

1098. and you have this important message

1099. and John here gives this

  1100. very very helpful pause

1101. in terms of what it means

1102. in terms we have to live

1103. he does not condemn them

  1104. for anything they've done

  1105. and in fact

  1106. more than that

1107. he blesses what they've done

1108. and he blesses their presence

1109. so let's just unpack that

1110. with the last few minutes

1111. if you could put up the first point

1112. that would be very helpful

  1113. remember that the gospel

  1114. is proclaimed

1115. to deliver you from religion

1116. not to make you more religious

  1117. remember

  1118. that the gospel

  1119. is proclaimed

1120. to deliver you from religion

  1121. not to make you

  1122. more religious

  1123. you see my mistake

  1124. and I don't know how I got it

1125. and probably if I went back

  1126. in time to

  1127. to my

  1128. the Baptist church

  1129. I grew up in

1130. it might very well be

  1131. that the minister

  1132. was all the time

  1133. speaking against it

  1134. but somehow or another

  1135. I didn't get it

  1136. I was dumb

  1137. I was a slow learner

1138. but I sort of made the mistake

1139. that what a real Christian is

  1140. is a real Christian

  1141. is both somebody

  1142. who's given their life

  1143. to Jesus

1144. but is also a Baptist

1145. also dresses a certain way

1146. also likes a certain type

  1147. of music

1148. also has a certain type

  1149. of political beliefs

  1150. and

  1151. and

  1152. and

  1153. and

  1154. and

  1155. that's

  1156. that's what a real Christian is

  1157. you can't just actually

  1158. you just can't actually

1159. put your faith in Jesus

  1160. you've got to have

  1161. that other stuff too

  1162. that's what religion is

  1163. it's self-righteous

1164. you see it's not enough

  1165. just to depend

1166. it's easier the gospel message is

  1167. that Jesus does everything

1168. to make you right with him

  1169. absolutely everything

  1170. with nothing left over

  1171. every accusation against you

  1172. every claim against you

  1173. he deals with it

  1174. your need to appear

  1175. perfect before God

1176. you're clothed with his righteousness

  1177. you don't say

  1178. okay

  1179. father so thankful

  1180. that Jesus died

1181. to take away my sins

  1182. and I know I can't appear

  1183. before you naked

1184. so I just want to let you know

1185. I wore the right clothes

  1186. liked the right music

  1187. didn't like certain movies

  1188. voted the right

  1189. way

1190. and I went to a Baptist church

  1191. not picking on Baptist

  1192. I just

  1193. I was a Baptist

  1194. I'm talking about myself

  1195. right

1196. no no no no no

  1197. God the Father

1198. would come up to you

  1199. and say

1200. oh come on dear one

1201. you'd want to give me

  1202. a hug in heaven

  1203. he said

  1204. you are so silly

  1205. all that other stuff

  1206. doesn't matter

  1207. in fact it's

  1208. it's dumb

  1209. like

  1210. you're clothed

  1211. with my son's

  1212. righteousness

  1213. that's what you're clothed with

  1214. and you see

1215. at the heart of all

  1216. religion

  1217. and all spirituality

  1218. is this idea

1219. that I need to make

  1220. myself clean

  1221. I need to make

  1222. myself acceptable

  1223. I can't just touch

  1224. trust

  1225. purely

  1226. and utterly

  1227. and completely

  1228. and massively

  1229. upon grace

  1230. I need to supplement

  1231. it

1232. and then one of the

  1233. problems is

  1234. a lot of us

  1235. look at people

  1236. who are religious

  1237. and what we see

  1238. we see phonies

  1239. we see

  1240. hypocrisy

1241. and we see a whole

  1242. pile of things

  1243. that don't interest us

1244. and so we reject it

  1245. but we're not really

  1246. rejecting the gospel

  1247. the gospel

  1248. is the message

  1249. that God

  1250. has done everything

1251. that needs to be done

  1252. to make you right

  1253. with himself

  1254. he does it

  1255. because he loves you

  1256. he does it

  1257. knowing you can't

  1258. do it for yourself

  1259. he does it

  1260. knowing you've

  1261. turned your back

  1262. on him

  1263. and you're at

  1264. enmity with him

1265. he knows all of this

1266. and still he loves you

  1267. still he loves you

1268. and did all that is

  1269. needed for you

  1270. to be made right

  1271. with him

  1272. still he loves you

  1273. and the gospel

  1274. message is

  1275. to our Jewish friends

  1276. you don't stop

  1277. being Jewish

  1278. but you don't have

1279. to wear that skull cap

  1280. you don't have to

  1281. real Christians

  1282. don't have to wrap

  1283. your arms

  1284. with certain types

  1285. of leather

  1286. and have certain

  1287. types of

  1288. to our Muslim

  1289. friends

  1290. guys you don't

1291. have to grow a beard

1292. you want to grow a beard

  1293. that's fine

  1294. you know

  1295. but you don't have

  1296. to grow a beard

  1297. you don't have to

  1298. wear that clothes

  1299. to Christians

  1300. you can like

  1301. different types

  1302. of music

  1303. and it's not

  1304. the case

  1305. that a priest

  1306. is more holy

  1307. than a lay person

  1308. you see

  1309. because what's

  1310. undergirding

  1311. religion

  1312. is that

  1313. I'm

  1314. me and Sean

  1315. and maybe

  1316. Gary

  1317. and almost

  1318. Jonathan

  1319. and almost

  1320. Daniel

  1321. we're the real

  1322. Christians

  1323. the rest of you

  1324. are at best

  1325. second rate

  1326. okay

  1327. I think there's

  1328. a person here

  1329. who does a lot

  1330. of Christian

  1331. speaking

  1332. so you're

  1333. included with me

  1334. we're like

  1335. up here

  1336. but everybody

  1337. else is second

  1338. rate

  1339. because real

  1340. Christians

  1341. make their

  1342. living from

  1343. the gospel

  1344. nah

  1345. that's what

  1346. this text

  1347. is saying

  1348. that's not

  1349. true

  1350. God

  1351. does call

  1352. certain people

  1353. to be set

  1354. aside

  1355. to make

  1356. their living

  1357. from the

  1358. gospel

  1359. but most

  1360. people are

  1361. not

  1362. and that's

  1363. what this

  1364. story so

  1365. powerfully

  1366. reveals

  1367. but some

  1368. of you might

  1369. say all

  1370. you want

  1371. is just

  1372. have to

  1373. have faith

  1374. and then

  1375. you do

  1376. whatever

  1377. you want

  1378. like is

  1379. that what

  1380. the Bible

  1381. is saying

  1382. you just

  1383. have this

  1384. private

  1385. revelation

  1386. of Jesus

  1387. and then

  1388. once you

  1389. have your

  1390. private

  1391. revelation

  1392. of Jesus

  1393. you can

  1394. just

  1395. every once

  1396. in a while

  1397. sort of

  1398. have a little

  1399. zinging

  1400. conversation

  1401. with them

  1402. or a little

  1403. boast of

  1404. woo

  1405. there's a bit

  1406. of spiritual

  1407. energy

  1408. you just

  1409. sort of

  1410. live whatever

  1411. way you

  1412. want

  1413. do whatever

  1414. you

  1415. no no

  1416. that's

  1417. that

  1418. could you

  1419. put up

  1420. the next

  1421. point

  1422. that would

  1423. be very

  1424. helpful

  1425. remember

  1426. that you

  1427. enter the

  1428. Jesus way

  1429. by yourself

  1430. but you

  1431. live the

  1432. Jesus way

  1433. with Jesus

  1434. and others

  1435. you enter

  1436. the Jesus

  1437. way

  1438. by yourself

  1439. but you

  1440. live the

  1441. Jesus way

  1442. with Jesus

  1443. and others

  1444. you see

  1445. one of the

  1446. things which

  1447. is at the

  1448. heart of the

  1449. gospel is that

  1450. the gospel

  1451. is going to

  1452. restore you

  1453. to being

  1454. human

  1455. as the

  1456. gospel grips

  1457. you and

  1458. shapes you

  1459. it will start

  1460. to restore

  1461. you to be

  1462. human

  1463. and what are

  1464. human beings

  1465. on one level

  1466. I'm a private

  1467. guy I have my

  1468. own personal

  1469. experience

  1470. none of you

  1471. actually can

  1472. ever fully

  1473. properly enter

  1474. into my

  1475. experience

  1476. it's my

  1477. experience

  1478. and but on

  1479. the other hand

  1480. you know you

  1481. have families

  1482. you have

  1483. workplaces

  1484. you have a

  1485. social life

  1486. and that's

  1487. some ways

  1488. reflected about

  1489. what the

  1490. Christian life

  1491. is

  1492. it's not

  1493. just that

  1494. you become

  1495. a lonely

  1496. mystic

  1497. all by

  1498. yourself

  1499. or you

  1500. engage on

  1501. your own

  1502. particular

  1503. all alone

  1504. religious

  1505. spiritual

  1506. quest

  1507. no the

  1508. Bible is

  1509. going to

  1510. restore you

  1511. to what

  1512. it means

  1513. to be

  1514. human

  1515. and that

  1516. means there's

  1517. going to be

  1518. private things

  1519. like private

  1520. devotions but

  1521. there's also

  1522. going to be

  1523. common types

  1524. of things

  1525. that's why

  1526. Jesus and

  1527. the Father and

  1528. the Holy Spirit

  1529. invent the

  1530. church that

  1531. we're meant to

  1532. do life with

  1533. other Christians

  1534. not in a way

  1535. that becomes

  1536. all consuming

  1537. but we're meant

  1538. to live with

  1539. others to

  1540. pray with

  1541. others to

  1542. celebrate with

  1543. others to

  1544. weep with

  1545. others

  1546. to struggle

  1547. with others

  1548. to help

  1549. with each

  1550. other

  1551. as what

  1552. God

  1553. intends

  1554. so you

  1555. have to

  1556. make a

  1557. personal

  1558. decision

  1559. to receive

  1560. Jesus as

  1561. your Savior

  1562. and Lord

  1563. but then

  1564. you're going

  1565. to start

  1566. the gospel

  1567. itself will

  1568. start to

  1569. shape you

  1570. to want to

  1571. spend at

  1572. least some

  1573. time in

  1574. some structured

  1575. and ordered

  1576. time with

  1577. other Christians

  1578. but

  1579. can you

  1580. put up

  1581. the next

  1582. point

  1583. I can't

  1584. remember

  1585. what my

  1586. bridge

  1587. point

  1588. was

  1589. going

  1590. to

  1591. be

  1592. to

  1593. the

  1594. next

  1595. one

  1596. remember

  1597. that the

  1598. gospel

  1599. shapes you

  1600. to be

  1601. more your

  1602. true

  1603. unique

  1604. self

  1605. that's the

  1606. type of

  1607. thing

  1608. that's what

  1609. I meant

  1610. is the

  1611. transition

  1612. I don't

  1613. want to

  1614. sound really

  1615. judgmental

  1616. about this

  1617. but just

  1618. give me a

  1619. little tiny

  1620. bit of

  1621. grace

  1622. but here's

  1623. the thing

  1624. like you

  1625. know

  1626. when you're

  1627. if you're

  1628. in Jerusalem

  1629. and you

  1630. see a lot

  1631. of ultra

  1632. orthodox

  1633. Jews

  1634. all dressed

  1635. the same

  1636. well I mean

  1637. there's like

  1638. 50 types

  1639. of them

  1640. but those

  1641. who are in

  1642. the same

  1643. type

  1644. they're all

  1645. dressed the

  1646. same

  1647. they almost

  1648. become like

  1649. clones

  1650. they become

  1651. indistinguishable

  1652. from each

  1653. other

  1654. when you see

  1655. a poll of

  1656. very devout

  1657. Muslims

  1658. they start to

  1659. look almost

  1660. identical

  1661. it's hard

  1662. to understand

  1663. them

  1664. if you get

  1665. a group

  1666. of very

  1667. very

  1668. like

  1669. you know

  1670. religious

  1671. Catholics

  1672. or Anglicans

  1673. and you see

  1674. the priests

  1675. and you'll

  1676. see that

  1677. they're all

  1678. dressed in

  1679. identical

  1680. black suits

  1681. and very

  1682. similar

  1683. haircuts

  1684. and they

  1685. look like

  1686. indistinguishable

  1687. from each

  1688. other

  1689. and it's

  1690. hard to

  1691. not sort

  1692. of think

  1693. that's what

  1694. religion does

  1695. that's what

  1696. spirituality

  1697. does

  1698. it forces

  1699. you to

  1700. work on

  1701. externals

  1702. and end up

  1703. looking the

  1704. same

  1705. but one of

  1706. the things

  1707. which is so

  1708. wonderful

  1709. about all

  1710. these stories

  1711. is that

  1712. when Mary

  1713. Magdalene

  1714. meets the

  1715. resurrected

  1716. Jesus

  1717. she responds

  1718. one way

  1719. when Peter

  1720. meets the

  1721. resurrected

  1722. Jesus

  1723. he responds

  1724. a different

  1725. way

  1726. when John

  1727. meets the

  1728. resurrected

  1729. Jesus

  1730. he reacts

  1731. a different

  1732. way

  1733. it reflects

  1734. their personality

  1735. and Jesus

  1736. doesn't say

  1737. by the way

  1738. just time out

  1739. Peter gets

  1740. an A plus

  1741. Mary Magdalene

  1742. gets an A minus

  1743. and John

  1744. get off your

  1745. butt dude

  1746. you only get

  1747. like a B minus

  1748. no he doesn't

  1749. do that

  1750. they're all

  1751. completely and

  1752. utterly

  1753. themselves

  1754. Mary

  1755. passionate

  1756. just

  1757. passionate

  1758. and public

  1759. and Peter

  1760. let's go

  1761. take that

  1762. hill

  1763. and John

  1764. let's just

  1765. think about it

  1766. for a bit

  1767. and those

  1768. are all

  1769. fine

  1770. and even

  1771. the different

  1772. ways the

  1773. disciples

  1774. respond to

  1775. Jesus

  1776. when it's

  1777. just the

  1778. ten of

  1779. them the

  1780. first time

  1781. they're all

  1782. glad

  1783. they're all

  1784. giving each

  1785. other high

  1786. fives

  1787. they're giving

  1788. Jesus high

  1789. fives

  1790. they're jumping

  1791. up and

  1792. down

  1793. and in this

  1794. particular

  1795. case

  1796. here's what

  1797. this is

  1798. describing

  1799. a group

  1800. of guys

  1801. who've worked

  1802. hard all

  1803. night

  1804. and they're

  1805. in a beautiful

  1806. lake

  1807. it's the early

  1808. part of the

  1809. morning

  1810. and they're

  1811. sitting there

  1812. and they have

  1813. 153 big

  1814. fish

  1815. they made a

  1816. lot of money

  1817. from that

  1818. hard work

  1819. and there's

  1820. a wonderful

  1821. fire on the

  1822. beach

  1823. beginning of

  1824. the day

  1825. it's cool

  1826. there's some

  1827. fresh fish

  1828. being cooked

  1829. perfectly

  1830. some fresh

  1831. bread

  1832. you're with

  1833. your buddies

  1834. and they're

  1835. just quiet

  1836. you know why

  1837. it doesn't get

  1838. any better

  1839. than this

  1840. those of you

  1841. who love the

  1842. outdoors

  1843. and love to

  1844. fish

  1845. it doesn't

  1846. get any

  1847. better than

  1848. this

  1849. the sweat

  1850. drying

  1851. you're just

  1852. quiet

  1853. and that's

  1854. good too

  1855. that's

  1856. good too

  1857. Jesus doesn't

  1858. say that's

  1859. better than

  1860. the other

  1861. way

  1862. he doesn't

  1863. say there's

  1864. one way

  1865. that you

  1866. have to

  1867. behave

  1868. he brings

  1869. out your

  1870. uniqueness

  1871. it's the

  1872. opposite of

  1873. religion

  1874. and

  1875. can you

  1876. put up

  1877. the next

  1878. point

  1879. so

  1880. some of

  1881. you might

  1882. say

  1883. well

  1884. okay

  1885. George

  1886. I'm a

  1887. little bit

  1888. you might

  1889. remember

  1890. that the

  1891. gospel

  1892. shapes you

  1893. to enjoy

  1894. simple

  1895. pleasures

  1896. work well

  1897. in honest

  1898. labor

  1899. and enjoy

  1900. being

  1901. generous

  1902. see that's

  1903. one of

  1904. the things

  1905. which is

  1906. so wonderful

  1907. about that

  1908. like many

  1909. of us

  1910. many people

  1911. think that if

  1912. you become a

  1913. Christian you

  1914. have to walk

  1915. away from

  1916. simple pleasures

  1917. like real

  1918. Christians

  1919. real Christians

  1920. just eat

  1921. steamed kale

  1922. and quinoa

  1923. and give all

  1924. and have no

  1925. butter on it

  1926. because butter

  1927. is sinful

  1928. and no

  1929. olive oil

  1930. it's just

  1931. plain

  1932. and maybe

  1933. some bread

  1934. preferably dry

  1935. and the

  1936. rest of the

  1937. money goes

  1938. to the

  1939. mission field

  1940. or something

  1941. that's what

  1942. real Christians

  1943. are like

  1944. no that's

  1945. not what

  1946. this text

  1947. shows

  1948. that real

  1949. Christians

  1950. never have

  1951. seconds or

  1952. thirds

  1953. do you think

  1954. in this

  1955. story if

  1956. one of the

  1957. disciples said

  1958. Jesus I'm

  1959. really famished

  1960. could I have

  1961. seconds

  1962. do you think

  1963. he'd say

  1964. no way

  1965. come on

  1966. do you think

  1967. the fish would

  1968. taste good

  1969. by the way

  1970. anybody who's

  1971. gone fishing

  1972. and it's an

  1973. early morning

  1974. fresh fish

  1975. on the

  1976. fire

  1977. right hot

  1978. it's delicious

  1979. can't get

  1980. better than

  1981. that

  1982. and there's

  1983. simple pleasures

  1984. Jesus dignifies

  1985. simple pleasures

  1986. and he dignifies

  1987. honest labor

  1988. those of you

  1989. in private

  1990. enterprise

  1991. Jesus is

  1992. with you

  1993. I mean

  1994. what do you

  1995. do in private

  1996. enterprise

  1997. like I'm

  1998. sure if

  1999. Shannon was

  2000. to talk

  2001. to you

  2002. they say

  2003. at the

  2004. end of

  2005. the day

  2006. the owners

  2007. of the

  2008. coffee shop

  2009. they total

  2010. up their

  2011. sales

  2012. you

  2013. counted

  2014. how did

  2015. they know

  2016. there were

  2017. 153

  2018. fish

  2019. is it

  2020. beyond

  2021. the

  2022. possibility

  2023. that either

  2024. Jesus waited

  2025. while they

  2026. counted

  2027. with a big

  2028. smile on his

  2029. face

  2030. or he walked

  2031. over and

  2032. helped them

  2033. count

  2034. it matters

  2035. honest labor

  2036. matters

  2037. and it's

  2038. generous

  2039. what Jesus

  2040. does to

  2041. come

  2042. and you

  2043. know

  2044. if you're

  2045. thinking about

  2046. what Jesus

  2047. is like

  2048. and what

  2049. God is

  2050. like

  2051. later on

  2052. today

  2053. if you

  2054. go to

  2055. a Tim

  2056. Hortons

  2057. and you

  2058. see that

  2059. that person

  2060. working at

  2061. Tim Hortons

  2062. with the

  2063. ugly

  2064. clothes

  2065. and maybe

  2066. the ugly

  2067. cap

  2068. Jesus

  2069. did their

  2070. job

  2071. for you

  2072. he cooked

  2073. he prepared

  2074. he served

  2075. and it's

  2076. generous

  2077. he blesses

  2078. simple service

  2079. he blesses

  2080. generosity

  2081. so will the

  2082. gospel shape

  2083. you and change

  2084. you yes it

  2085. will in all

  2086. sorts of ways

  2087. that you can't

  2088. even begin

  2089. to go

  2090. you know

  2091. for those

  2092. of us

  2093. who are

  2094. unbelievably

  2095. fixated

  2096. about money

  2097. often when we

  2098. say the gospel

  2099. changes us

  2100. all we think

  2101. about is sex

  2102. it will make

  2103. a difference

  2104. in sex

  2105. but you know

  2106. what will

  2107. make it

  2108. other things

  2109. for those

  2110. of you

  2111. who are

  2112. unbelievably

  2113. tight-fisted

  2114. and worried

  2115. about money

  2116. the gospel

  2117. will start

  2118. to make

  2119. you generous

  2120. for those

  2121. of you

  2122. who struggle

  2123. with laziness

  2124. and think

  2125. you're entitled

  2126. as the gospel

  2127. grips you

  2128. it'll start

  2129. to make you

  2130. aware of the

  2131. fact that

  2132. honest labor

  2133. is good

  2134. for those

  2135. of you

  2136. who are

  2137. working holics

  2138. the gospel

  2139. will start

  2140. to shape

  2141. you to

  2142. realize

  2143. that actually

  2144. you don't

  2145. get your

  2146. identity

  2147. from your

  2148. work

  2149. that maybe

  2150. you have

  2151. to spend

  2152. some time

  2153. with Christian

  2154. friends or

  2155. with your

  2156. family

  2157. will the

  2158. gospel

  2159. change

  2160. you

  2161. the gospel

  2162. will change

  2163. you in all

  2164. sorts of

  2165. ways that you

  2166. can't even

  2167. begin to

  2168. imagine

  2169. but it will

  2170. shape you

  2171. towards

  2172. generosity

  2173. towards

  2174. honest labor

  2175. towards

  2176. enjoying

  2177. simple

  2178. pleasures

  2179. that's how

  2180. the gospel

  2181. shapes you

  2182. and just

  2183. one final

  2184. thing before

  2185. we close

  2186. and this

  2187. is one of

  2188. the things

  2189. that most

  2190. hit me

  2191. I pray

  2192. for non-Christian

  2193. friends and

  2194. family members

  2195. if you could

  2196. wrap the final

  2197. point

  2198. this has just

  2199. really struck

  2200. me here

  2201. this week

  2202. and it's

  2203. helped me

  2204. with my

  2205. prayer life

  2206. and I'm

  2207. just going

  2208. to share

  2209. it with

  2210. you

  2211. because

  2212. hopefully

  2213. it'll help

  2214. you with

  2215. your prayer

  2216. life

  2217. pray

  2218. that Jesus

  2219. will reveal

  2220. himself as

  2221. savior and

  2222. lord to

  2223. your family

  2224. friends

  2225. co-workers

  2226. and neighbors

  2227. pray that

  2228. Jesus will

  2229. reveal himself

  2230. as savior

  2231. and lord

  2232. that's at

  2233. the heart

  2234. of the text

  2235. he reveals

  2236. himself

  2237. and it

  2238. just you

  2239. know I

  2240. sometimes have

  2241. a hard time

  2242. knowing how

  2243. to pray

  2244. that people

  2245. come to a

  2246. saving faith

  2247. in Jesus

  2248. that's a

  2249. perfectly

  2250. good thing

  2251. to pray

  2252. I wasn't

  2253. praying wrong

  2254. but it just

  2255. really struck

  2256. me and one

  2257. of the things

  2258. I can pray

  2259. I almost

  2260. mentioned some

  2261. names

  2262. is I can

  2263. just pray

  2264. you know I

  2265. pray for my

  2266. grandchildren

  2267. almost every

  2268. day

  2269. I believe it

  2270. or not I

  2271. pray for the

  2272. future spouses

  2273. of my

  2274. grandchildren

  2275. even the

  2276. babies

  2277. can't get

  2278. started on

  2279. prayer too

  2280. early

  2281. and I

  2282. pray that

  2283. they'll

  2284. come to

  2285. Jesus

  2286. and now

  2287. I'm going

  2288. to pray

  2289. for my

  2290. kids

  2291. my grandkids

  2292. and their

  2293. future spouses

  2294. that Jesus

  2295. will reveal

  2296. himself as

  2297. savior and

  2298. lord

  2299. for the

  2300. baristas

  2301. and the

  2302. people I

  2303. meet

  2304. lord

  2305. will you

  2306. reveal

  2307. yourself as

  2308. savior and

  2309. lord to

  2310. them

  2311. just want

  2312. to share

  2313. that with

  2314. you to

  2315. encourage you

  2316. to take

  2317. that on

  2318. as a

  2319. prayer as

  2320. well

  2321. please

  2322. please stand

  2323. just bow

  2324. our heads

  2325. in prayer

  2326. father

  2327. first of all

  2328. father we

  2329. just we

  2330. can we

  2331. are just

  2332. I am so

  2333. grateful we

  2334. are so

  2335. grateful

  2336. you

  2337. reveal

  2338. Jesus to

  2339. me and

  2340. to many

  2341. of us

  2342. as savior

  2343. and lord

  2344. not because

  2345. we were

  2346. the smartest

  2347. or the

  2348. most holy

  2349. or what

  2350. you just

  2351. out of

  2352. love for

  2353. us you

  2354. did that

  2355. and father

  2356. we thank

  2357. you for

  2358. the work

  2359. of your

  2360. holy spirit

  2361. that we

  2362. you revealed

  2363. Jesus to

  2364. us as

  2365. savior and

  2366. lord we

  2367. received it

  2368. and we

  2369. ask father

  2370. that you

  2371. would continue

  2372. to reveal

  2373. Jesus as

  2374. savior and

  2375. lord more

  2376. and more

  2377. in every

  2378. area of

  2379. our lives

  2380. in money

  2381. and sexuality

  2382. and time

  2383. and family

  2384. and work

  2385. and leisure

  2386. in citizenship

  2387. and politics

  2388. and all

  2389. of how we

  2390. think and

  2391. all we

  2392. remember

  2393. and all

  2394. of our

  2395. imagination

  2396. and all

  2397. of our

  2398. artistic

  2399. abilities

  2400. that in

  2401. everything

  2402. that makes

  2403. us us

  2404. father just

  2405. we ask

  2406. that you

  2407. would

  2408. continue

  2409. to be so

  2410. kind to

  2411. us and

  2412. reveal

  2413. Jesus as

  2414. savior and

  2415. lord in

  2416. all areas

  2417. of our

  2418. life and

  2419. deeper and

  2420. deeper in

  2421. the center

  2422. of who

  2423. we are

  2424. and father

  2425. I pray

  2426. we pray

  2427. for those

  2428. who have

  2429. not yet

  2430. come to

  2431. recognize who

  2432. Jesus is

  2433. that he

  2434. is their

  2435. savior and

  2436. he is

  2437. their lord

  2438. that he

  2439. died for

  2440. them

  2441. that he

  2442. will restore

  2443. them to

  2444. what it

  2445. means to

  2446. be human

  2447. father we

  2448. ask for

  2449. our friends

  2450. and loved

  2451. ones that

  2452. you would

  2453. reveal

  2454. Jesus as

  2455. savior and

  2456. lord to

  2457. them that

  2458. they would

  2459. receive it

  2460. and father

  2461. we ask that

  2462. you help us

  2463. to die help

  2464. us to be so

  2465. gripped with

  2466. the gospel that

  2467. we die to

  2468. all religion

  2469. and that is

  2470. the gospel

  2471. that shapes

  2472. us your

  2473. word shapes

  2474. us the

  2475. holy spirit

  2476. shapes us

  2477. father help

  2478. us to die

  2479. to all

  2480. religion and

  2481. all this we

  2482. ask in the

  2483. name of

  2484. Jesus your

  2485. son and our

  2486. savior and

  2487. all God's

  2488. people said

  2489. amen
