  1. Father, we come now to study your word.

  2. All of us have minds.

  3. Some of us have really, really, really great minds.

  4. Some of us just may be average minds or even below average.

  5. But, Father, we ask that your Holy Spirit would help us to use our mind and our will

  6. and our imagination and our heart to the very best of our ability to attend to your word.

  7. And at the same time, Father, we ask that your Holy Spirit would humble us

  8. so that we know that unless your Holy Spirit draws your word to our hearts,

  9. our minds cannot truly grip your word.

  10. So, Father, pour your Holy Spirit upon us and make your word alive to us at the very center of who we are.

  11. And we ask this in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  12. Please be seated.

  13. Every one of us know people who suck all of the oxygen out of the room.

  14. You know the type of person I mean.

  15. They have to be the center of attention.

  16. They have to have their needs being met.

  17. If the conversation starts to focus somewhere else, they get very, very uncomfortable

  18. and they do something to try to bring the attention and the conversation back to themselves.

  19. They just literally suck all of the oxygen out of relationships and out of the room.

  20. And I'm not just talking about two-year-olds.

  21. I'm talking about people who are vastly older than two.

  22. And we all know people like that.

  23. In fact, some of us might be that person without realizing it.

  24. It's one of those things that our few remaining friends or our family just don't have the courage to tell us.

  25. But we just, the people who just suck everything, all of the oxygen, all of the energy out of the room.

  26. It's funny because on one level when we meet people like this, we tend not to like them.

  27. Where we like them at first maybe because they're, I don't know, very witty, very charming,

  28. seem to have lots of excellent qualities.

  29. But once we spend some time with them and the fact that there's never any type of reciprocal thing going on,

  30. they're just sucking all of the energy, all of the oxygen into themselves,

  31. the room is empty, they're just sucking it, we tend not to like them.

  32. But, you know, it's funny that our culture is a bit confused about this

  33. because at the heart of a lot of our cultural advice, at a lot of the heart of our movies,

  34. we actually encourage that behavior.

  35. Without realizing that we both encourage the behavior,

  36. yet when we actually meet people who suck all the oxygen out of life, we don't like them.

  37. And by that I mean, I wrote a little blog this week and it sort of talks about this a little bit.

  38. But if you think about it, much in our culture is taken up with what I call the three A's.

  39. And that is with this quest for autonomy, a quest for authenticity, and a quest for affirmation.

  40. And these three things are very, very closely connected.

  41. Autonomy is this idea that at the end of the day, it has to be true for me, it has to be right for me.

  42. I'm the only one who can know what's true for me.

  43. I'm the only one who can know what's right for me.

  44. In a sense, how dare you tell me what's right for me?

  45. Like, how dare you do that?

  46. Like, if we were at a party in a room and somebody was trying to tell somebody else what's right and what's true,

  47. and you just, you know, everybody in the room, even if they weren't pointing their fingers,

  48. you'd sense that they're pointing their fingers.

  49. And it's a very, very funny thing.

  50. We would say, how dare you point your finger at them while we're pointing our finger at them?

  51. But we don't sort of realize that.

  52. But it's a very, very common type of advice.

  53. Only the individual, only I know what can be true, what is important, what is valuable, what is right, what is wrong for me.

  54. And I need to be able to, in a sense, to live that and have that acknowledged.

  55. And the thing which goes along often with autonomy is this quest for authenticity.

  56. It's a very similar type of thing.

  57. It's the idea that I'm the only one who can understand what I need to accomplish,

  58. what's going to fulfill me, which is going to give my life meaning.

  59. I'm the only one who knows that.

  60. I'm the only one who can figure that out.

  61. And how dare you try to impose your vision of happiness, your vision of the good life on me?

  62. When I'm in coffee shops, I hear counseling advice between friends around this all of the time.

  63. Like people saying, how on earth can your husband or how on earth can your sister or how on earth can your mother

  64. or how on earth can your father be telling you you have to do these things?

  65. Doesn't he know that that's not right for him to be doing those things that you need to make?

  66. You need to have time for yourself.

  67. You need to make space for yourself.

  68. You have to put limits on what he or she is doing.

  69. And you need to just grasp that only you can.

  70. Like it's constant advice.

  71. How many movies are based around this idea of you have maybe two friends?

  72. And one of them, really, what they would love to do is they don't want to live under their father's rule

  73. or their mother's influence or their wife or their husband or their circle or their coach.

  74. You know, these people maybe want them to become a doctor or want them to become an engineer.

  75. But in your own heart of hearts, you'd rather be a dancer or a poet or some type of an artist.

  76. And then in the course of the movie, the person doesn't grasp their autonomy and their authenticity

  77. and they bow to their father's rules or their coach's rules or expectations and they become that doctor.

  78. And in the movie, or they become that lawyer or whatever, accountant.

  79. And in the movie, the person's really good friend.

  80. They're not rejoicing with them.

  81. They're sad.

  82. Why?

  83. Because the person wasn't doing what was authentic to them.

  84. And the movie will move and progress to the point that finally the person has the courage to leave law

  85. or leave medicine or whatever it is to embrace dance or poetry or art or whatever it is

  86. that really is going to make them authentic.

  87. It's the constant advice and desire of our culture.

  88. And often with all of this goes the third A, which can be called acclaim or applause or approval.

  89. So, you know, once again, the same thing.

  90. If I, you know, I'm sitting my own, I understand what's right.

  91. I understand what's wrong for me.

  92. And I understand what I need to do so that I will be the real me that I was meant to be.

  93. The me that's really at the heart of my feelings and my sense of myself.

  94. And only I have that proper sense of myself.

  95. And I need to pursue it.

  96. And you need to approve of it.

  97. Like if you don't, how dare you not give me approval?

  98. How dare you not applaud that?

  99. How dare you not?

  100. And in our culture, everybody would be with the person saying,

  101. how dare you not give me that acclaim, that approval, that applause that I deserve

  102. because I am pursuing authenticity and I am the captain of my own ship and my own soul

  103. and I am doing that.

  104. And you have to give me, must give me the acclaim and applause that I deserve.

  105. The affirmation.

  106. You see, it's a very, very funny thing.

  107. That's the, sort of actually, by the way, the three things, the autonomy, authenticity,

  108. and acclaim, applause, approval.

  109. It's almost like the Trinity in Christian thought.

  110. The three of them are separate, but they're one.

  111. And they go in here with each other and all three of them have to be present, really,

  112. for a person to really be a well-functioning Canadian.

  113. But the problem is, if you think about it, that a person who really lives that

  114. ends up having to be a person who sucks all the oxygen out of the room.

  115. Because it's very funny in the type of advice that is found in so much counseling,

  116. so much self-help books, that it's found in Hollywood, that's found in academia,

  117. that's found just whether it's a Tim Hortons or a Starbucks or some other type of place

  118. or not a coffee place at all, McDonald's or Subway or a high-end hipster place.

  119. All of that advice is very similar.

  120. But if you follow it, then how is it that, well, how is it that you relate to other people

  121. in a good way?

  122. If it's, in a sense, I'm the center and it's all about me and your life and your needs

  123. and your autonomy and your authenticity and your need for applause,

  124. it's very hard for those two things to fit in our culture.

  125. Well, the text that we're going to look at today has some really interesting things to say about this dilemma.

  126. And part of the thing which is also very interesting, not this dilemma,

  127. just this whole cultural move of autonomy and authenticity and affirmation

  128. and the problems with them.

  129. And the text is easily misread and misunderstood, but it has very powerful wisdom to speak into this.

  130. So it would be a great help with me if you could turn in your Bibles to John 15, verse 21.

    John 15:21

  131. There are Bibles up there at the front now.

  132. The text will be up here as well, but it's really good just to have something in your hand that you can follow along.

  133. So John chapter 15, sorry, John chapter 21, beginning at the 15th verse.

John 15 chapter mention John 21 chapter mention

  134. And many people are a bit confused by this text, especially if you're reading it as a new Christian or as an outsider.

  135. It almost seems as if Jesus is trying to suck the oxygen out of the room.

  136. I could easily imagine lots of people, if they were there, saying to Peter that Jesus is being out of line

  137. in what he's asking Peter to do, that Peter needs to grasp his own autonomy, his own authenticity.

  138. And so our culture helps us to not understand this and misread it.

  139. So let's look at it.

  140. John chapter 21, verse 15.

    John 21:15

  141. And what's happening here, the book of John is now coming to the end.

  142. John is a very peculiar type of biography, but it is a biography about Jesus.

  143. And what makes it peculiar is that an inordinate, far too much time compared to a modern biography

  144. is spent with the last little bit of Jesus's life.

  145. But that's because John understands that the last bit is so unbelievably important.

  146. And John has shared how Jesus is condemned by the religious and political and cultural elites,

  147. and he's sentenced to an unjust death, how he dies by crucifixion,

  148. how his death is guaranteed by Rome, how he's put in a tomb,

  149. how then the tomb is found empty with the grave clothes there.

  150. And then John lays out a series of appearances, resurrection appearances,

  151. where Jesus appears alive to people.

  152. And this is the end part of a third time when he's appeared to all of the disciples.

  153. And just before we start reading this on verse 15, if you have your Bibles,

  154. just look up a tiny little bit to, it's not going to be able to be on the screen.

  155. If you just put up a little bit to verse, I can't find it right now.

  156. Oh yeah, verse 9.

  157. What's just gone on before that is that Jesus is, as I said,

  158. he's made a nice breakfast for them of fresh fish and fresh bread.

  159. He's cooking it over in verse 9, a charcoal fire with fish laid out on it and bread.

  160. And now we're going to go to verse 15.

  161. And the charcoal fire is very interesting because there's only one other place in all of the Gospels

  162. where a charcoal fire is mentioned.

  163. And that's the very night when Peter, when Jesus has been captured,

  164. and Peter's going to deny Jesus three times around a charcoal fire.

  165. And many of us know that, you know, we might think that we've gotten over something.

  166. We might think that we've forgiven somebody.

  167. Or we might think that we've gotten over feeling embarrassed or ashamed about something.

  168. But then all of a sudden we're somewhere and it comes back to us all of a sudden with great power.

  169. Something triggers a memory of what had gone on in the past.

  170. And one of the most powerful triggers is smell.

  171. And so the very distinctive smell of a charcoal fire,

  172. you just have to wonder as Peter gets out of the water and comes to see Jesus,

  173. and that charcoal fire is there.

  174. And the last time Peter maybe was around a charcoal fire was when he was denying Jesus three times.

  175. And here he is now, that smell in his nostrils.

  176. Everybody would know about the fact that Peter denied Jesus three times.

  177. And now after breakfast, the story continues, verse 15.

  178. When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter,

  179. Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?

  180. Jesus said to Peter,

  181. Verse 17, Jesus says to Peter the third time,

  182. Simon, son of John, do you love me?

  183. Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time,

  184. Do you love me?

  185. And Peter said to Jesus, Lord, you know everything.

  186. You know that I love you.

  187. And Jesus said to him, feed my sheep.

  188. And just sort of pause there for a second.

  189. Now, just before we get into sort of the big thing which is going on here,

  190. sometimes pastors will talk about the significance that two different words for love were being used in this text.

  191. Jesus uses the word agape, and Peter responds with the word philia.

  192. And then the final time, Jesus finally switches the words.

  193. And sometimes pastors will go out a long time talking about the significance of that.

  194. There's probably no significance in the difference of the language.

  195. You know, in the early centuries of the Christian church,

  196. there was a lot, most people who, if they read, they read Greek.

  197. And in the first four or five centuries, when people were still basically, were Greek speakers,

  198. none of the original people who knew Greek, I mean, Greek was their native tongue,

  199. none of the commentators on this text except origin, one person,

  200. made a distinction between the two words, not one.

  201. They just saw it as a stylistic difference that didn't have any substantive context.

  202. So it's not as if Jesus is saying two times with this one word,

  203. and Peter's not giving him the right answer,

  204. and then finally, you know, Jesus switches and Peter gives the same answer.

  205. It's nothing like that's going on in the text.

  206. It's a very, very simple thing.

  207. The English has captured it very well.

  208. Do you love me? Do you love me? Do you love me?

  209. And Peter says every time, you know that I love you, you know that I love you,

  210. you know that I love you.

  211. And every time, Jesus gives him a particular commission

  212. to feed, in a sense, the young and the vulnerable,

  213. to pastor people or be a shepherd to people,

  214. and then to feed people who are more mature and more developed Christians.

  215. The same, the English has captured it very well.

  216. But here's the thing that's going on, which is very, very interesting.

  217. If you found out that every time I met with one of my interns,

  218. or if every time I met with the council, I began with it saying,

  219. do you guys love me?

  220. You'd all think that that was weird.

  221. In fact, you'd say, why is George so needy?

  222. Like, why is it that he has to ask his interns every time he meets with them,

  223. do you guys love me? I hope you love me.

  224. Sounds like it's sort of needy.

  225. Or is Jesus actually doing something like what I described,

  226. trying to suck all the oxygen up out of the room,

  227. that he wants to make sure that Peter's given him all of the love,

  228. because he's the center.

  229. He has to be getting all of the attention.

  230. That's what's going on here in the text.

  231. Is Jesus needy?

  232. Is Peter, in fact, not doing the right thing?

  233. As I said earlier, should Peter have been saying,

  234. listen, Jesus, it's so nice to see you,

  235. but I have my own autonomy project.

  236. I have my own authenticity project,

  237. and I need some affirmation and acclaim as well.

  238. I need you to tell me that you love me.

  239. I need you to tell me doing really well.

  240. Is that what's going on in the text?

  241. One of the things which is so interesting about this text

  242. is that it brings up at least three problems

  243. with autonomy and authenticity and acclimation.

  244. It brings up at least three types of problems.

  245. One is it really brings to the fore

  246. how if you see somebody wanting to get all of the attention,

  247. all the oxygen,

  248. that type of advice that we give people just so casually

  249. that you have to be autonomous,

  250. you have to be authentic,

  251. you have to have affirmation,

  252. it always ends up creating somebody

  253. who is the center of attention,

  254. and we don't like it.

  255. We end up seeing them as being needy

  256. and not, in a sense,

  257. an admirable person,

  258. but somebody that we feel almost pity for.

  259. Just like, as I said,

  260. if you found out that every time I met with my interns,

  261. I asked them if they loved me.

  262. If every time I met with counsel,

  263. I asked them if they loved me.

  264. If I made efforts to always be the center at all times,

  265. you would start to not think more of me,

  266. but less of me.

  267. And the second thing which is going on in this text,

  268. which is very, very interesting,

  269. is that the very word love is used.

  270. Because, you see,

  271. one of the problems that we have in relationships nowadays

  272. is if you have two people...

  273. See, on one hand,

  274. what we really want is love.

  275. I was having a coffee the other day

  276. at a local coffee place,

  277. and the way they had organized the tips there,

  278. it's a regular feature of that place,

  279. is they always have two cups,

  280. and you can put the tips in one of the two cups.

  281. It's sort of like a little bit of a game.

  282. Like one time it might be dogs,

  283. and the other cup says cats.

  284. So if you're going to give them a tip,

  285. you put in whether you like dogs more than cats

  286. or cats more than dogs.

  287. And the other day,

  288. the other day I was there,

  289. and one of them was Lord of the Rings,

  290. the other one was Star Wars.

  291. But there was this time I was there getting coffee,

  292. and the tip choice was between

  293. Captain America and Iron Man.

  294. And so I looked inside

  295. to see how the vote was going,

  296. and I couldn't believe it,

  297. that Captain America had all of the tips,

  298. and Iron Man didn't have a single tip put in the jar.

  299. And I said to the baristas,

  300. I said, that's just so surprising

  301. that all the tips are going to Captain America,

  302. and none of them are going to Iron Man.

  303. And one of the two baristas said to me,

  304. well, that's no surprise,

  305. because Captain America is way better than Iron Man.

  306. Now, I have to confess,

  307. just given that Starbucks and baristas

  308. and their culture and everything like that,

  309. and these particular ones,

  310. I would have thought they all were voting for Iron Man,

  311. because Iron Man is filled with irony

  312. and sort of rebellious against authority

  313. and all of these things,

  314. all of these sort of very Canadian types of virtues.

  315. And I said to that,

  316. well, I would have thought you guys

  317. were all like Iron Man people.

  318. And one of them instantly said,

  319. no, no, like I'm a Captain America person,

  320. because I mean, amongst other things,

  321. Iron Man is arrogant.

  322. And then this barista,

  323. she actually put her hands,

  324. she said she loves Captain America,

  325. she actually put her hands around like this,

  326. it's not only,

  327. is he like a good guy,

  328. but he does things for the love of a girl,

  329. for the love of a woman.

  330. And she put her arms on her chest like that

  331. when she said it.

  332. And it's so funny,

  333. because I,

  334. you know,

  335. from the outside,

  336. I wouldn't,

  337. this is just me getting confused about things,

  338. but,

  339. like I can sometimes forget that,

  340. you know,

  341. beneath all the postures

  342. and all the hardness

  343. and all the edginess

  344. that can go on in the world,

  345. the fact of the matter is,

  346. is that most of us,

  347. what we really desire

  348. is deep love relationships

  349. with other people.

  350. That's what we desire.

  351. It's a common,

  352. common human desire.

  353. The problem is,

  354. if we're getting all of this advice

  355. about how we have to have autonomy,

  356. that only I know

  357. what's going to make me happy,

  358. only I know what's right and wrong,

  359. and only I know

  360. that what's going to fulfill my desires

  361. and what's going to,

  362. what's going to actually make me be the me

  363. that I was really meant to be

  364. and I need to pursue it

  365. and you need to,

  366. and you need to applaud me.

  367. If I'm saying this

  368. and I'm trying to live this,

  369. and at the same time

  370. I want to be in a love relationship

  371. with this other person

  372. and she's saying

  373. the exact same things

  374. and how on earth

  375. is marriage going to work?

  376. Like, it's just going to cause

  377. constant friction.

  378. It's just going to mean

  379. that it's constantly short term

  380. because both want to have autonomy,

  381. both want to have authenticity,

  382. both want to have applause,

  383. and nothing in that worldview

  384. suggests reciprocity

  385. or the importance

  386. of serving the other person

  387. or loving the other person.

  388. So in a very, very interesting way,

  389. this text,

  390. where the language

  391. is the language of love,

  392. highlights part of the whole problem

  393. with what's going on

  394. in our culture

  395. and the third way

  396. that it really highlights the problem

  397. is what's going on with Peter,

  398. not what's going on with Jesus,

  399. but what's going on with Peter.

  400. You see, this is the hard part.

  401. At a very, very, very, very significant,

  402. in a very, very significant way,

  403. in a very, very significant moment,

  404. Peter was a public failure.

  405. Not just a private failure,

  406. but a public failure.

  407. He denied his friend

  408. and master in public.

  409. He made claims and boasts

  410. that he, everybody else,

  411. all the other disciples,

  412. they could all fall away,

  413. they could all have their problems,

  414. they would all be weak,

  415. but he would be strong,

  416. he would not bend,

  417. he would not be broken,

  418. he would stay with Jesus

  419. and defend Jesus

  420. right to the very end,

  421. and after he makes

  422. all these public promises,

  423. he fails completely.

  424. And it'd be hard not to imagine

  425. that it means

  426. that he loses face

  427. and that he feels guilt

  428. and that he feels some shame.

  429. But how would you counsel Peter,

  430. if you're a good Canadian,

  431. how to be his own authentic self

  432. within that?

  433. See, that's the whole problem

  434. with seeking to be authentic

  435. and seeking to be autonomous.

  436. It doesn't help us

  437. when we go through things

  438. in our lives

  439. which are just really broken.

  440. It doesn't help us

  441. when we go through things

  442. that cause us shame.

  443. It doesn't help us

  444. when we do things that,

  445. you know,

  446. it doesn't matter

  447. what people tell us about,

  448. but we actually feel

  449. significant guilt about.

  450. And if it's part of who we are

  451. is a mixture of shame

  452. and guilt

  453. and failure

  454. and desires

  455. and strength

  456. and maybe anger

  457. at the situation

  458. that's caused us guilt

  459. or maybe a wish

  460. that we could somehow repair it,

  461. the fact of the matter is

  462. is that our inner life

  463. is very, very confused

  464. and all full of bits and pieces.

  465. And to think that somehow or another

  466. out of all of this brokenness

  467. and all of the shame

  468. and all of the guilt

  469. that we can somehow form

  470. an identity out of that,

  471. well, how does that actually

  472. make any sense?

  473. And how does it actually deal

  474. with the real guilt

  475. that we feel

  476. and the real shame

  477. that we feel?

  478. And so much of what passes

  479. for wisdom in the world

  480. doesn't actually deal

  481. with the significant shame

  482. or guilt that we feel

  483. or the broken relationships

  484. and the regrets that we feel.

  485. Even lots of the current advice

  486. around things like mindfulness

  487. and stuff,

  488. it's really just a type of a way

  489. to give ourselves a pass

  490. and to numb

  491. the deep feelings

  492. that we have.

  493. And I guess what I'm just

  494. trying to say is

  495. if you're just thinking

  496. of Peter there,

  497. Peter is a mass of emotions.

  498. He's really happy

  499. that Jesus is alive.

  500. He's excited.

  501. He's pumped.

  502. At the same time,

  503. he feels shame.

  504. He feels guilt.

  505. He feels uncomfortable.

  506. And almost all of the advice

  507. that the Canadian culture goes

  508. implies that somehow

  509. or another human beings

  510. are just this simple,

  511. singular thing

  512. that we can build

  513. an identity on

  514. and don't come to grips

  515. with the deep complexity

  516. and brokenness

  517. and strength

  518. that makes up

  519. real human beings.

  520. And so the advice

  521. of autonomy

  522. and authenticity

  523. is inherently unstable

  524. because it doesn't deal

  525. with what's really

  526. going on in a person.

  527. So if you could put up

  528. the first point.

  529. Jesus does not suck

  530. all of the oxygen

  531. out of your life.

  532. He is pure oxygen

  533. and eternal life

  534. so that you can live

  535. whole and free.

  536. Jesus does not suck

  537. all of the oxygen

  538. out of your life.

  539. In fact,

  540. he is pure oxygen

  541. and eternal life

  542. so that you can live

  543. whole and free.

  544. You see,

  545. that's what's going on here

  546. in this particular text.

  547. This is happening

  548. after Jesus has died

  549. on the cross.

  550. And what that means,

  551. and he's risen from the dead,

  552. and at the very,

  553. very center of the gospel,

  554. time and time

  555. and time and time again

  556. is this simple idea

  557. that God

  558. in the person

  559. of his son

  560. has given

  561. his life

  562. for yours.

  563. The way we human beings

  564. keep being pulled

  565. to try to live

  566. is to try to be

  567. self-centered

  568. and be selfish.

  569. That in a sense,

  570. it's my,

  571. you know,

  572. you have to sacrifice

  573. your life

  574. for me.

  575. You have to sacrifice

  576. your life for me.

  577. And in a sense,

  578. lots of Canadian advice

  579. is all centered around that.

  580. You need to give me

  581. the applause.

  582. You need to give me

  583. the approval.

  584. You need to give me

  585. the acclaim.

  586. You need to give

  587. your life

  588. for mine.

  589. What people often want

  590. nowadays in marriage

  591. is they want to find

  592. a soul friend.

  593. And what they often

  594. really mean by a soul friend

  595. is really what they mean

  596. as a person

  597. who as we change

  598. and go through

  599. the different stages

  600. and phases of our life

  601. that you will always

  602. give me

  603. your approval,

  604. your acclaim,

  605. your,

  606. you will always

  607. give that to me.

  608. But that's not a recipe

  609. for a marriage

  610. or a relationship

  611. or a friendship

  612. that's going to be

  613. enduring

  614. or last,

  615. which is really

  616. what we want.

  617. And what we see

  618. in the person of Jesus

  619. is that God,

  620. the light

  621. that made all things

  622. came and took on flesh

  623. and he gave,

  624. in a sense,

  625. his lightness

  626. to take upon himself

  627. our darkness.

  628. The life

  629. that has created

  630. all things

  631. takes on flesh

  632. and he takes upon himself

  633. our death

  634. and illness

  635. and gives us

  636. his life.

  637. The love

  638. that has created

  639. all things

  640. comes and takes

  641. on flesh

  642. and he takes

  643. upon himself

  644. our hatred

  645. and indifference

  646. and gives us,

  647. in a sense,

  648. a way to be connected

  649. to love.

  650. Jesus describes himself

  651. as the bread

  652. of life.

  653. He describes himself

  654. as the light

  655. of the world.

  656. He describes himself

  657. as the one

  658. by whom,

  659. when you have faith,

  660. springs of living water

  661. will well up

  662. from within you

  663. when you drink

  664. of him

  665. and partake

  666. of him

  667. when you are

  668. connected to him.

  669. He is the source

  670. of life

  671. and light

  672. and love

  673. and to be connected

  674. to him

  675. is not

  676. our love for him,

  677. our desire

  678. and affection

  679. and moving

  680. towards him

  681. is never going

  682. to suck all the oxygen

  683. out of my life.

  684. It will actually

  685. begin to give me

  686. oxygen

  687. that I might be whole

  688. and I might be free.

  689. And if you could put up

  690. the second point,

  691. Jesus is also

  692. dealing here

  693. with another

  694. very, very common

  695. problem

  696. which is that

  697. we cut off

  698. people who hurt us

  699. and we never want

  700. to see them again.

  701. Or if we begin

  702. to have a friend

  703. that seems to be

  704. very, very filled

  705. with shame

  706. and very, very filled

  707. with need,

  708. often what we do

  709. is we want to shoot

  710. them, we want to

  711. just have nothing

  712. to do with them,

  713. we cut them off.

  714. And so Peter

  715. has publicly fallen

  716. and he has

  717. this shame

  718. and the guilt

  719. that he doesn't

  720. entirely know

  721. what to do with.

  722. And Jesus

  723. walks right

  724. towards it.

  725. Jesus always

  726. walks towards

  727. your sin

  728. and your shame

  729. to save

  730. and restore you.

  731. Jesus always

  732. walks towards

  733. your sin

  734. and your shame

  735. to save

  736. and restore you.

  737. I mean,

  738. that's what the

  739. whole gospel

  740. is all about.

  741. It's all about

  742. God with us.

  743. That God,

  744. the Son of God

  745. sets aside

  746. his glory

  747. and divine splendor

  748. and he becomes

  749. flesh.

  750. God comes

  751. and is with us

  752. in the midst

  753. of our sin,

  754. in the midst

  755. of our shame,

  756. in the midst

  757. of our death,

  758. in the midst

  759. of our illness,

  760. in the midst

  761. of our hatred,

  762. in the midst

  763. of our indifference,

  764. in the midst

  765. of our strengths,

  766. in the midst

  767. of our glories,

  768. in the midst

  769. of all of the things,

  770. all of the complicated

  771. mess that makes

  772. human beings,

  773. Jesus comes

  774. and lives

  775. among us.

  776. And then

  777. that path

  778. continues

  779. because when

  780. Jesus dies

  781. on the cross,

  782. if you might

  783. remember in the story,

  784. it's very clear

  785. just before Jesus

  786. is captured

  787. by a mere mention

  788. of who he is,

  789. all of the soldiers

  790. fall down

  791. and it helps us

  792. to remember

  793. that when Jesus

  794. is on the cross,

  795. what is holding

  796. him on the cross

  797. is not the nails,

  798. is not the threat

  799. of soldiers,

  800. is not the condemnation,

  801. but it's love

  802. that holds him

  803. on the cross.

  804. And as he dies

  805. upon the cross,

  806. he is taking

  807. into himself

  808. our darkness,

  809. our death,

  810. and our hatred.

  811. He takes that

  812. all upon himself.

  813. He walks

  814. towards our sin

  815. and shame

  816. not only to live

  817. amongst us

  818. but to also bear it.

  819. And then

  820. by bearing it,

  821. he defeats it

  822. for us.

  823. But once we

  824. are his,

  825. like to be a Christian

  826. is to understand

  827. that every single

  828. thing that

  829. every single thing

  830. that I have ever

  831. done that is wrong,

  832. all that which

  833. causes me shame,

  834. all of that

  835. was laid upon him.

  836. And he died

  837. for me.

  838. He died

  839. in my place.

  840. and his

  841. life

  842. and love,

  843. his light

  844. and love

  845. and life

  846. is given

  847. to me.

  848. He takes

  849. my darkness,

  850. my death,

  851. my hatred

  852. and indifference.

  853. He takes that

  854. and he gives me

  855. life and love

  856. and light.

  857. Amen.

  858. And all

  859. that would be

  860. against me

  861. is borne by him

  862. and all

  863. that I need

  864. to stand

  865. in God's

  866. presence

  867. is given

  868. to me.

  869. And so

  870. when Jesus

  871. is talking

  872. to Peter,

  873. Jesus isn't

  874. saying,

  875. by the way,

  876. what you did

  877. doesn't matter.

  878. It matters.

  879. But what he's

  880. doing is he's

  881. giving Peter

  882. an opportunity

  883. to be restored

  884. because Jesus

  885. has already

  886. paid

  887. for Peter's

  888. failure.

  889. He's already

  890. dealt with it.

  891. But you know

  892. what it's like.

  893. It's hard

  894. to be really

  895. gripped by the

  896. gospel and

  897. understand that

  898. my sin and

  899. my shame

  900. has been dealt

  901. with by Jesus.

  902. And so even

  903. though when I

  904. put my faith

  905. and trust in

  906. Jesus,

  907. I am his

  908. forever because

  909. it's his

  910. righteousness

  911. and his

  912. sin bearing

  913. that makes

  914. me right

  915. with God.

  916. But he

  917. wants me

  918. to start

  919. to become

  920. more like

  921. him in my

  922. daily life.

  923. And so

  924. Jesus will

  925. always walk

  926. towards your

  927. sin and

  928. he always

  929. will walk

  930. towards your

  931. shame.

  932. That's what

  933. discipleship is.

  934. He'll always

  935. walk towards

  936. it because

  937. he already

  938. knows about

  939. it and he's

  940. paid for it

  941. and he walks

  942. towards it

  943. and he walks

  944. towards it

  945. so you can

  946. begin to be

  947. gripped by the

  948. gospel and

  949. understand that

  950. the price has

  951. already been

  952. paid.

  953. And you can

  954. be gripped by

  955. the gospel to

  956. understand that

  957. all Jesus wants

  958. to do is always

  959. to restore

  960. you, to

  961. restore you, to

  962. restore you.

  963. He doesn't

  964. shoot the

  965. wounded.

  966. He saves and

  967. restores.

  968. And that's what

  969. Jesus is doing

  970. here with Peter

  971. for every one

  972. of his denials.

  973. Every one of

  974. his denials.

  975. Jesus gives

  976. him a commission.

  977. Now if this

  978. was just where

  979. the gospel ended

  980. it would be

  981. really, really

  982. good.

  983. But Peter,

  984. John wants to

  985. deal with a

  986. couple of

  987. final things

  988. that Jesus

  989. does which

  990. really matter

  991. because he

  992. talks about

  993. the significance

  994. of dark

  995. times in our

  996. life and

  997. of death.

  998. And so if we

  999. just would

  1000. continue reading

  1001. on, if you

  1002. could put the

  1003. text back up

  1004. on the screen,

  1005. let's continue

  1006. reading at

  1007. verse 18.

  1008. Peter is now,

  1009. I mean Jesus

  1010. is still speaking

  1011. to Peter and

  1012. he says,

  1013. truly, truly I

  1014. say to you

  1015. when you were

  1016. young, you

  1017. used to dress

  1018. yourself and

  1019. walk wherever

  1020. you wanted.

  1021. But when you

  1022. are old, you

  1023. will stretch

  1024. out your

  1025. hands and

  1026. another will

  1027. dress you and

  1028. carry you where

  1029. you do not

  1030. want to go.

  1031. This Jesus

  1032. said to show

  1033. by what kind

  1034. of death

  1035. Peter was to

  1036. glorify God.

  1037. And after

  1038. saying this,

  1039. he said to

  1040. Peter, follow

  1041. me.

  1042. And just sort

  1043. of pause before

  1044. I read the

  1045. next little bit.

  1046. I, when I

  1047. read the

  1048. commentaries and

  1049. I talk about

  1050. the original

  1051. language, at

  1052. the level of

  1053. the original

  1054. language,

  1055. it's obvious

  1056. to all of

  1057. the people who

  1058. know the

  1059. original language

  1060. that Jesus

  1061. is referring to

  1062. Peter being

  1063. crucified, that

  1064. that's how

  1065. Peter's going

  1066. to die.

  1067. The English

  1068. can't capture

  1069. it.

  1070. I'm just

  1071. telling you

  1072. what smarter,

  1073. wiser people

  1074. who know

  1075. Greek know.

  1076. And so

  1077. Jesus has

  1078. revealed to

  1079. Peter that

  1080. how he's going

  1081. to die will

  1082. be by

  1083. crucifixion.

  1084. he will be

  1085. captured by

  1086. the Roman

  1087. authorities and

  1088. he will be

  1089. condemned and

  1090. he will die a

  1091. death of

  1092. crucifixion.

  1093. It's a very

  1094. hard thing that

  1095. Jesus shares

  1096. with Peter.

  1097. And

  1098. let's just

  1099. see what

  1100. happens after

  1101. this.

  1102. So Peter,

  1103. verse 20,

  1104. Peter turned

  1105. and saw the

  1106. disciple whom

  1107. Jesus loved

  1108. following them,

  1109. the one who

  1110. also had leaned

  1111. back against

  1112. him during the

  1113. supper and had

  1114. said,

  1115. Lord,

  1116. who is it

  1117. that's going

  1118. to betray

  1119. you?

  1120. When Peter

  1121. saw him,

  1122. he said to

  1123. Jesus,

  1124. Lord,

  1125. what about

  1126. this man?

  1127. It's very

  1128. natural,

  1129. right?

  1130. I can well

  1131. imagine if I

  1132. was walking

  1133. along with

  1134. Matt and

  1135. Jesus showed

  1136. up and

  1137. said,

  1138. by the way,

  1139. George,

  1140. I want you

  1141. to know that

  1142. you're going

  1143. to die a

  1144. terrible,

  1145. painful,

  1146. horrible

  1147. death.

  1148. It would

  1149. be very

  1150. natural for

  1151. me to say,

  1152. what about

  1153. Matt?

  1154. And that's

  1155. what Peter

  1156. does.

  1157. He says,

  1158. what about

  1159. John?

  1160. And Jesus

  1161. said to him,

  1162. verse 22,

  1163. if it is my

  1164. will that he

  1165. remain until I

  1166. come,

  1167. what is that

  1168. to you?

  1169. You follow

  1170. me.

  1171. So the

  1172. saying spread

  1173. abroad among

  1174. the brothers and

  1175. sisters that

  1176. this disciple

  1177. was not to

  1178. die,

  1179. yet Jesus

  1180. did not

  1181. say to him

  1182. that he

  1183. was not

  1184. to die.

  1185. But if

  1186. it is my

  1187. will that he

  1188. remain until

  1189. I come,

  1190. what is that

  1191. to you?

  1192. basically what

  1193. Jesus says

  1194. is I

  1195. will sometimes

  1196. reveal things

  1197. to you about

  1198. what's going

  1199. to be happening

  1200. in your

  1201. life.

  1202. And the

  1203. main thing

  1204. is that even

  1205. if I reveal

  1206. them to you,

  1207. you follow

  1208. me.

  1209. I'm not

  1210. going to

  1211. reveal to

  1212. you necessarily

  1213. things that

  1214. are going

  1215. on in other

  1216. people's

  1217. life.

  1218. I'm

  1219. speaking to

  1220. you,

  1221. you follow

  1222. me.

  1223. You follow

  1224. me.

  1225. And he

  1226. doesn't satisfy

  1227. our curiosity

  1228. necessarily about

  1229. what happens

  1230. to others.

  1231. The other

  1232. thing that's

  1233. interesting

  1234. here is

  1235. that twice

  1236. Jesus says

  1237. very clearly

  1238. that he's

  1239. going to

  1240. come a

  1241. second time

  1242. which is

  1243. an important

  1244. doctrine for

  1245. us as

  1246. Christians to

  1247. understand.

  1248. And then

  1249. Peter,

  1250. John wraps

  1251. it up,

  1252. verse 24,

  1253. this is the

  1254. disciple who's

  1255. bearing witness

  1256. about these

  1257. things and

  1258. who has

  1259. written these

  1260. things and

  1261. we know that

  1262. his testimony

  1263. is true.

  1264. So John

  1265. is saying,

  1266. listen,

  1267. this is an

  1268. eyewitness

  1269. biography.

  1270. I've given

  1271. you names of

  1272. lots of other

  1273. people who are

  1274. also eyewitnesses.

  1275. You can check

  1276. it out with

  1277. him and I

  1278. want you to

  1279. know everything I

  1280. say is true.

  1281. Verse 25,

  1282. now there are

  1283. also many

  1284. other things

  1285. that Jesus

  1286. did where

  1287. every one of

  1288. them to be

  1289. written,

  1290. I suppose,

  1291. that the

  1292. world itself

  1293. could not

  1294. contain the

  1295. books that

  1296. would be

  1297. written.

  1298. If you could

  1299. put up the

  1300. third point,

  1301. that would be

  1302. very helpful.

  1303. Just to wrap

  1304. it up,

  1305. a Christian

  1306. is an

  1307. ordinary

  1308. person who

  1309. trusts Jesus

  1310. as their

  1311. Savior and

  1312. follows him

  1313. as their

  1314. Lord.

  1315. As John's

  1316. Gospel comes

  1317. to an end,

  1318. it's very,

  1319. very interesting.

  1320. If you go

  1321. back and read

  1322. John's Gospel

  1323. again,

  1324. you'll see

  1325. the very,

  1326. very first

  1327. words Jesus

  1328. says.

  1329. The very

  1330. first words

  1331. that Jesus

  1332. is recorded

  1333. as saying

  1334. is a

  1335. question.

  1336. What are

  1337. you seeking?

  1338. See,

  1339. every human

  1340. being is

  1341. seeking

  1342. something all

  1343. the time,

  1344. seeking meaning,

  1345. seeking love,

  1346. seeking food,

  1347. seeking prosperity,

  1348. seeking fame,

  1349. seeking success,

  1350. and Jesus,

  1351. the very first

  1352. words of Jesus

  1353. are,

  1354. what are you

  1355. seeking?

  1356. And the people

  1357. give the answer

  1358. and he says,

  1359. come and see,

  1360. come and see.

  1361. And that's what

  1362. John's done with

  1363. the whole book.

  1364. He begins

  1365. by saying

  1366. to each

  1367. one of you,

  1368. you're coming

  1369. to Jesus,

  1370. the first thing

  1371. you have to

  1372. ask yourself

  1373. as you're

  1374. trying to

  1375. understand Jesus

  1376. is,

  1377. what are you

  1378. seeking?

  1379. Like,

  1380. know yourself.

  1381. And then

  1382. Jesus says,

  1383. well,

  1384. come and see,

  1385. and that's

  1386. how John

  1387. organizes the

  1388. Gospel,

  1389. around the

  1390. miracles,

  1391. around the

  1392. I am

  1393. statements,

  1394. about the

  1395. trial,

  1396. about the

  1397. death,

  1398. about the

  1399. empty tomb,

  1400. about the

  1401. resurrection,

  1402. and then the

  1403. final words

  1404. are a very,

  1405. very similar

  1406. thing.

  1407. If the first

  1408. thing is,

  1409. listen,

  1410. figure out what

  1411. you're seeking,

  1412. but come and see,

  1413. from me.

  1414. And then the

  1415. very final words

  1416. of Jesus are,

  1417. follow me,

  1418. follow me.

  1419. And a

  1420. Christian is an

  1421. ordinary person

  1422. who wants to

  1423. follow Jesus,

  1424. because he trusts

  1425. him as his

  1426. Savior and wants

  1427. to follow him

  1428. as Lord.

  1429. You can't have

  1430. him as your

  1431. Savior without

  1432. having him as

  1433. your Lord,

  1434. and it makes

  1435. no sense to

  1436. have him as

  1437. your Lord if

  1438. he isn't your

  1439. Savior, but

  1440. that's what a

  1441. Christian is.

  1442. Next point,

  1443. please.

  1444. When you

  1445. follow Jesus,

  1446. even your

  1447. suffering and

  1448. death can

  1449. bring glory

  1450. to God.

  1451. When you

  1452. follow Jesus,

  1453. even your

  1454. suffering and

  1455. death can

  1456. bring glory

  1457. to God.

  1458. This would

  1459. be a whole

  1460. sermon in

  1461. and of

  1462. itself.

  1463. In the

  1464. eyes of the

  1465. world,

  1466. suffering and

  1467. death can

  1468. bring nobody

  1469. glory and

  1470. nobody any

  1471. type of

  1472. significance.

  1473. And in a

  1474. world where

  1475. there are

  1476. suicide

  1477. bombers,

  1478. the whole

  1479. idea of

  1480. death glorifying

  1481. God can

  1482. be very,

  1483. very,

  1484. very frightening.

  1485. But,

  1486. you know,

  1487. Muhammad died

  1488. as a result

  1489. of poisoning

  1490. of one of

  1491. the family

  1492. members of

  1493. his hundreds

  1494. and thousands

  1495. of victims.

  1496. And Jesus

  1497. dies on the

  1498. cross because

  1499. he loves you.

  1500. God's

  1501. and Jesus

  1502. is not

  1503. pardoning

  1504. suicide

  1505. bombers.

  1506. It's a

  1507. completely

  1508. and radically

  1509. opposite

  1510. different

  1511. religion.

  1512. Jesus is

  1513. saying that

  1514. even in your

  1515. suffering and

  1516. death, there

  1517. is a way to

  1518. suffer and

  1519. die when you

  1520. are following

  1521. Jesus that

  1522. can bring

  1523. God glory.

  1524. God's

  1525. and

  1526. if you

  1527. could put

  1528. up the

  1529. final point,

  1530. Jesus is

  1531. speaking to

  1532. you this

  1533. morning as

  1534. Savior and

  1535. Lord.

  1536. He is the

  1537. Savior and

  1538. Lord and

  1539. he is saying

  1540. to every

  1541. single one of

  1542. you,

  1543. follow me.

  1544. Follow me.

  1545. I can't say

  1546. follow me.

  1547. I don't want

  1548. you to follow

  1549. me.

  1550. Only follow

  1551. me if I'm

  1552. following Jesus

  1553. because we

  1554. need to

  1555. follow Jesus.

  1556. And this

  1557. invitation is

  1558. given to

  1559. every person

  1560. who is here

  1561. this morning.

  1562. That's how

  1563. the gospel

  1564. basically ends.

  1565. Follow me.

  1566. Every one of

  1567. us will go

  1568. through the

  1569. valley of

  1570. the shadow

  1571. of death.

  1572. And unless

  1573. Jesus comes

  1574. before we

  1575. die, we

  1576. will all

  1577. die.

  1578. But when

  1579. we follow

  1580. Jesus, he

  1581. will lead us

  1582. in the valley

  1583. of the shadow

  1584. of death.

  1585. He will lead

  1586. us right into

  1587. death and

  1588. beyond, which

  1589. is the new

  1590. heaven and

  1591. the new

  1592. earth.

  1593. We can

  1594. follow him

  1595. in success.

  1596. We can

  1597. follow him

  1598. in failure.

  1599. We can

  1600. follow him

  1601. when we are

  1602. ashamed.

  1603. We can

  1604. follow him

  1605. when we

  1606. have sinned.

  1607. We can

  1608. follow him

  1609. when times

  1610. are hard

  1611. and when

  1612. times are

  1613. good.

  1614. We can

  1615. follow him.

  1616. He wants

  1617. to be our

  1618. savior and

  1619. he wants

  1620. to be our

  1621. Lord.

  1622. He wants

  1623. you and

  1624. me to

  1625. follow him.

  1626. Please

  1627. stand.

  1628. Let's just

  1629. bow our heads

  1630. in prayer.

  1631. Father, we

  1632. thank you

  1633. for Jesus.

  1634. We thank

  1635. you, Father,

  1636. that when we

  1637. come to

  1638. Jesus, we

  1639. are coming

  1640. to a person

  1641. who knows

  1642. everything there

  1643. is to know

  1644. about us,

  1645. that he

  1646. knows every

  1647. sin, every

  1648. shame, everything

  1649. which is really

  1650. good about us,

  1651. everything which

  1652. is whole,

  1653. everything which

  1654. is broken.

  1655. We thank you

  1656. that when we

  1657. come to Jesus,

  1658. he knew us in

  1659. the womb,

  1660. he knew us as

  1661. babies, that he

  1662. knows even our

  1663. future, what will

  1664. happen in the days

  1665. and weeks and

  1666. months or years

  1667. ahead.

  1668. We thank you,

  1669. Father, that

  1670. when we come

  1671. to Jesus, he

  1672. knows every

  1673. mask, every

  1674. thought, everything

  1675. there is to know

  1676. about us, he

  1677. knew and he

  1678. knows.

  1679. And still he

  1680. loves us and

  1681. still he died

  1682. for us.

  1683. And still when

  1684. we put our

  1685. faith and trust

  1686. in him, he

  1687. accepted us in

  1688. all of who we

  1689. are with nothing

  1690. left over.

  1691. and we thank

  1692. you that he

  1693. died for all

  1694. that makes us

  1695. us without

  1696. anything left

  1697. over.

  1698. And that he

  1699. has paid for

  1700. all that makes

  1701. us us with

  1702. nothing left

  1703. over.

  1704. And that he

  1705. has covered us

  1706. with his

  1707. righteousness in

  1708. all that is

  1709. with us with

  1710. nothing left

  1711. over.

  1712. And we ask,

  1713. Father, that you

  1714. would grip us

  1715. with this deep

  1716. truth of the

  1717. deep knowledge

  1718. and love of

  1719. Jesus for us,

  1720. that he is

  1721. water, he is

  1722. oxygen, he is

  1723. life, he is

  1724. love, he is

  1725. light that makes

  1726. us whole and

  1727. free.

  1728. And Father, help

  1729. us to follow

  1730. Jesus.

  1731. And all God's

  1732. people said,

  1733. Amen.
